bigotry and accountability go hand in hand, but not in the way they are usually discussed. bigotry is a crutch in which even the most progressive privileged people use to correct and control the marginalized. and their own marginalization does not matter, because they will fall back onto upholding the status quo and we see this in forms of media all around us, we see this on twitter hate mobs, we see this even in nature.

when the black woman is held accountable the phantom of misogynoir is in the room, when the transman is held accountable transmisandry is in the room, and there is often not a place to call out those forms of bigotry because they’re stripped from their identities. people have made it acceptable to be bigoted towards marginalized individuals they dislike or hold contempt for and that’s not the case.

and we see this with dream and his community, we see this when they wield homophobia, misogyny, and other violent manifestations of bigoted behavior against us. from ableism to racism, they wield bigotries in order to keep us “under control” and to sway us away from dream because they can’t fathom our freedoms. they can’t fathom that we don’t think like them, that we aren’t the model minority they want us to be, that we aren’t a part of some monolith that speaks for all trans people or all queer people, and that there is space for individuals to exist freely within their “sacred communities”.

I would like a united community! But to accomplish that you don't shut down anyone talking about intra-community issues and saying we "divide the community" or are "playing opression olympics". Rather, you need to listen.

Listen to transmisogyny-affected people about intracommunity transmisogyny. Listen to trans poc about intracommunity racism. Listen to disabled trans people about intracommunity ableism. Etc, Etc.

Listen to people you want to share a community with you have privilege over, just LISTEN for once, without immediately snapping back! Maybe you'll learn something instead of alienating people you have privilege over and pushing them to make their own smaller communities. And maybe then we can finally have some fucking TransUnity™

Somerton's misogyny and lesbophobia was fucking blatant and the fact his fans didn't care / notice until a man made a video on it is abhorrent. That IS a problem, people NEED to do better or else bigotry towards women will only continue to be accepted! Lesbians were calling this loser out for years and no one cared!

hey. as a lesbian who watched somerton's videos you have to understand that it wasn't "fucking blatant" and it was embedded between smart (stolen) points in the structure of the argument, and was given fake "evidence" to prove it --- something hbomberguy specifically shows with every example. i personally always noticed that it was weird and it was always a critical point when watching his videos (and also uh, side note but you shouldn't primarily go to cis white men for good takes about feminism and the lesbian experience anyways --- like, you should be watching a diverse intake of thought from underrepresented creators and understand that the cis/white/male perspective will always be limited because it's not universal)

to many, though, it for sure didn't register as a pattern of behavior until the instances were laid out. saying that audiences were "abhorrent" for "excusing" it just shows a complete lack of sympathy, because again: the pattern of behavior was the problem, and rhetorically each individual instance was relegated to enough plausible deniability where it slipped by most audiences who were probably watching the video in the background while they folded laundry or something. when bigotry is shrouded under the guise of fact, it takes on the affect of truth and abuses the viewer's trust in the creator. sure, media literacy is a huge problem, and i've written and researched so much into that, and yeah yeah audiences should "do better." the reality is though, putting the blame on the audience feels a little misogynistic in itself, bc you're just shifting the blame from the literal people who need to be blamed for practicing bigotry --- cis white men with a large platform.

the real thing u should be saying here is to call for a diversification of one's media intake, but no -- let's blame the audience for getting lied to, instead of uplifting female, queer, trans, poc, etc voices. the only way people "need" to do better, imo, is listening to those people instead and seeking multiple perspectives.

like y'all, let's retire this very new narrative that all james somerton fans were evil misogynists who willingly supported this and need to be destroyed. really most people who watched his content were younger queer people genuinely interested in queer media analysis, film theory, and queer history, probably excited that a long video essay was dedicated to their favorite show/movie/etc, and lets not pretend this wasn't disappointing for them as well. can everyone like chill out.

I dislike takes that Danse would be just as conservative in modernized aus when it's clearly shown his staunch views of things come from his time in the Brotherhood and his deep-rooted desire to belong to something with a greater purpose.

Not to mention lines that show much more open-mindedness that get overlooked for his harsher sentiments when you first meet him. Like the oppurtunity to be a part of something is why Danse fell so far into Brotherhood dogma and it doesn't negate the offense things he does but I feel like it's just lazy to be like "hmmm he'd def be racist" just so it aligns to his BoS beliefs.

-doesn’t feel remorse or empathy

-they definitely think this version of nolan abides by human bigotry shit like sexism

-oblivious to A LOT of social cues and overall very socially inept (very blunt and dry tone of voice so he always sounds kinda mad even if he isn’t)

-actually cares about his family and friends but has trouble expressing it verbally, more show than tell

-cared ab the guardians and they were his friends but he repressed the hell out of what he did bc of guilt (and he’s dumb)

-says things like “curses” and “moon it up”

-monologues a bunch like holy shit

-very physically affectionate with the people he’s v close too (he also smiles guys!)

-makes jokes without trying (kinda hard to catch bc of the deadpan tone at times)

-would realistically be confused by earth’s own forms of bigotry and shit

-bookworm and wrote and documented things even before becoming a writer on earth!

-feels extreme remorse and guilt for his past actions but again has trouble showing it

I absolutely have 0 desire to bring a child into this world for many reasons, including ones from many different axis, so I don't see it changing, but the anti natalist folks are fucking evil man lol. im halfway through the call of cthulu and im gonna be real i havent actually been given any real reasons to hate cthulu yet beyond "he looks scary and feels evil" and like i imagine that there HAS to be more reasons cthulus seen as irrevocably evil in pop culture as a whole, but the issue is that for lovecraft to convey something being repulsive and evil and scary he has to compare it to or associate it with people of colour, overwhelmingly black people and to a lesser degree nonblack indigenous people.

its kind of absurd the hold that this has on pop culture because it honestly feels like its so blatantly racist and deranged that it doesnt feel like... this could possibly be the seed for some other genuinely interesting horror and fantasy concepts. like ive seen obviously lovecraftian concepts and works that have been just as interesting and scary without even REMOTELY conjuring the same absurd racist imagery was his own actual work does. honest to god the scariest thing about this so far is how fucking RACIST it is.
