Gonna be honest, for as much as I was looking forward to “Chipped Off”, I was expecting a fairly standard Chip Whistler ep - but WOW was I completely blown away.
Not only was this episode still hilarious, but it was absolutely fascinating!
When it comes to villain redemptions (or attempts at redemptions), I’ve never seen another kids cartoon acknowledge that once a villain gets past a certain mental point/becomes truly obsessed with revenge and being ‘in the right’, it isn’t exactly possible for them to just give up their ways and live a ‘normal’ life as a good guy - not without actually putting in the work and properly acknowledging why they ever became evil/did evil things in the first place.
Despite the ep’s light (and again, HILARIOUS) tone, the ep makes it very clear that Chip is NOT in a good place mentally. He still has his obsessions and his pride, and even when he tries to let these things go and find his own happiness, he can’t help but fall back into old habits and is unable to truly be happy because - for as much as he wants happiness - he’s unwilling to put in the hard work to actually find anything substantial and honest to what he wants, needing to put on a whole ‘normal’ persona just to even try, essentially lying to himself until he’s unable to deny his true self anymore.
It’s tragic, but the show never paints it as anyone else’s fault but Chip’s - hell, it shows Cricket and the others celebrating Chip’s ‘death’ and shows them as being valid for it instead of making them feel guilty or sad for him, which tracks consider Chip is an attempted murderer + all the other stuff he did. Like- yeah no if I was Cricket I’d be happy the dude who tried to kill me and my fam with a helicopter was dead too.
The show makes it crystal clear that Chip desperately needs both therapy and to take genuine accountability - and if he can’t do that, then he’s doomed, and he’ll only have himself to blame. They acknowledge the tragedy of it, but they never paint him as just a Sad Boi.
So yeah, it’ll be interesting to see where exactly this little storyline goes - and regardless of whether or not Chip gets arrested/killed off for real or actually gets redeemed and genuinely changes for the better, I feel like whatever his ending is, the BCG crew is going to put in the work to make it feel earned. And what’s more, they’re going to make it incredibly interesting.
And knowing that, I’m truly excited for this arc ^v^

***BIG CITY GREENS SPOILERS***
I really like how the latest ep handled the whole thing with Nick, Nancy’s dad. I was really worried the ep would end up falling flat with a “but faaaamily” message, but thankfully it didn’t go down that route.
The episode made it clear that Nancy didn’t forgive Nick for being a shitty dad and likely wouldn’t ever become close to him again - AND SHE’S NOT VILLAINIZED FOR IT! That in itself is kind of a miracle, considering how often these types of stories go.
What’s more, I love that Cricket and Tilly aren’t portrayed as completely naive kids. For as positive of an experience as they have with Nick, even in the short amount of time they spend with him they still see fully how much of an irresponsible liar Nick is - but they accept that and still want him in their lives, still wanting him as a grandpa.
Personally, as long as they aren’t in huge danger with the family members they interact with, I’m all for kids deciding who they do and don’t want in their lives - and given that Cricket and Tilly know what they’re getting into with Nick but still want to keep hanging out with him, it makes sense that Nancy would want to give Nick a chance too (especially since, as the kids say, Nick never put them in any serious danger, even if his idea of ‘fun’ still isn’t great per say).
Finally, I like that Nick doesn’t necessarily get away with his shittiness, even if he technically gets what he wanted by getting to live with Nancy. He’s forced to work as a farm hand and is told point blank “you don’t want to follow my rules, you can just leave” and Nick actually respects these rules - not because he likes them, but because he’s willing to do the bare minimum to stay in Cricket and Tilly’s lives.
Like I said at the start, in terms of how stories like these usually go - especially in kids cartoons - I feel like BCG handled this type of storyline as best they could. It didn’t fall into any of the pitfalls I was worried about, and I feel like the BCG crew is going to do a good job developing and sorta redeeming Nick throughout the rest of the season.
