Summary: A short ficlet about the gang betting on Brett's sexuality

The whole gang probably placed bets on Brett's sexuality from the moment he walked in the door. Everyone's money is either on straight or gay, with the exception of Andre, who believes that Brett might be ace.

Gigi and Glen think he's straight, mostly because he fits into the typical cis-het male stereotype (though Glen secretly hopes he's wrong about it).

Reagan and Myc think he's gay- Reagan mostly because she's never seen his looks linger over a girl the way she knows him to do for a guy, and Myc because, "yeah, he seems gay enough."

The team is originally patient, waiting for him to say or do something that indicates any attraction anywhere- that'd rule out Andre, at least. But he simply... doesn't. They all have their thoughts on what his version of flirting or admiring is, but no one can tell for sure. It isn't until one day, when Gigi gets impatient in the cafeteria, that she finally asks him, "hey handsome, what are your thoughts on ladies?" And of course he's confused, so she tries again, "would you ever date a woman?"

That's where it clicks for him. "I mean, yeah, if she's right for me, then sure," he shrugs simply. Gigi is good at containing her excitement, but Reagan's loud, "DAMNIT!" from the next table over alerts him to the whole situation. He wanders over to the table, watching Reagan, Andre, and Myc throw some cash in the middle.

He quirks an eyebrow and observes the situation. Brett can't quite tell what it is, but he forms a slight idea before asking, "were you guys betting on whether or not I'd go out with Gigi? Because that's not what that was- I mean no offence to Gigi or anything, but-"

Reagan is the first to interrupt. "We weren't betting on that."

"Oh." His eyebrows furrow as he looks around again. "Were you betting on if I'd date a lady?"

"We were betting on your sexuality, moron!" Myc finally yells. "Reagan and I placed money on you being gay."

His eyes followed Gigi as she reached for the money on the table. "And I've never been more happy to be able to smell someone's heteronormativity from a mile away!" She fans herself with the bills, swatting away Glen's hand when he tries to reach for it.

"Hey! I earned that too, fair and square!" Just like that, Glen and Gigi began bickering over the division of the money, while Reagan starts ragging on Myc's mind reading abilities, a tussle which Andre was somehow dragged into. Brett can only stand and watch the chaos unfold.

Then he finally speaks up. "You're all wrong." Silence falls over the entire group, their eyes locking on him. "I'm bi. Didn't any of you know that?" He asks, mild offense leaking into his voice.

They all give him blank looks. Reagan is the first to talk. "I've never seen you look at a girl the same way you do to some guys." They all continue to look at Brett.

His face flushes punk, feeling the pressure of being put on the spot. He doesn't even notice Myc's tentacle resting on his head. "I mean, yeah. There's uh, some guys that I admire a little more. But I also flirt-- well, try to flirt-- with R-, uh, some ladies. But it---" Brett took a deep breath to keep himself from rambling, and finally looked at everyone around the table. Reagan had a soft smile, Gigi and Glen seemed intrigued, and Andre looked so genuinely happy.

"Holy shit! You guys should hear some of the stuff he was thinking about!" Myc declares, and everyone starts talking again.

Das wilde Geschnatter von Lotte drang an Vikas Ohren. Neugierig hielt sie in ihrer Bewegung inne und lauschte, während sie den Kopf leicht in Richtung des Schnatterns drehte. Ob ein neuer Besucher in ihren Garten getreten war? Oder hatte Lotte nur wieder ihre fünf Minuten? Als eine Frauenstimme erklang, legte Vika den Schneebesen beiseite, wischte sich die Hände an ihrer Schürze ab und trat aus der offenen Haustür hinaus in ihren Garten. Der Blick aus hellgrünen Augen musste dieses Mal etwas suchen, bevor sie ihren Besuch erblickte. Lotte hatte die junge Frau tatsächlich in die Nähe des Weihers getrieben. Mit breit aufgefächerten Flügeln und gestreckter Brust, lief die Gans auf die junge Frau zu, die sich panisch, in die Enge getrieben, nach einem Ausweg umsah. 

Sie würde doch nicht…? Bevor es so weit kam, musste Vika handeln. “Liselotte!” Ihre Stimme war streng und tatsächlich brach die Gans in ihrem Geschnatter ab, um Vika zu fixieren. Diese war direkt losgeeilt, direkt auf die Gans und ihren Besuch zu, bevor größerer Schaden entstehen konnte. Doch da hatte sie die Rechnung ohne Lotte gemacht. Frech wie eh und je, schien der Vogel genau abzuschätzen, dass sie noch einen Angriff wagen konnte, bevor Vika nah genug heran gekommen war. Das Schnattern setzte ein und die Gans schlug mit ihren Flügeln, während sie einen Satz auf die Frau zumachte. Diese erschrak, taumelte vor der Gans zurück und kämpfte einen Moment um ihr Gleichgewicht, als sie mit ihrem Fuß an dem letzten Brett des Stegs, der in den Weiher hinein ragte, abrutschte. “Oh, Mist!” Vika begann zu rennen, doch es war ein hoffnungsloses Unterfangen. Die Hände ausgestreckt, versuchte sie, ihren Besuch noch auf das Trockene zu ziehen. Leider entglitten ihr die Finger der jungen Frau und ein lautes Platschen folgte auf einen leichten Regen an Wassertropfen, der Vikas nackte Beine und Füße benetzte. 

Lotte schien mit sich zufrieden. So zufrieden, wie eine Gans nun mal aussehen konnte, als sie die Flügel wieder einklappte, den Kopf stolz gereckt und noch immer leise schnattern, watschelte sie davon. Man sollte Tieren keine menschlichen Emotionen aufbürden, Vika wusste das, doch Lotte war in diesem Moment einfach die Inkarnation von Selbstzufriedenheit. Das Plätschern im Wasser ließ die junge Schottin ihre Aufmerksamkeit wieder auf die Frau in ihrem Weiher lenken. “Das tut mir so furchtbar Leid, komm, ich helf dir…”, doch mitten in ihrem Satz hielt Vika inne. Sie hatte sich bereits auf die Bretter auf die Knie fallen lassen, die Hand halb zu der Fremden ausgestreckt, als ihr Blick an den Ohren der Frau hängen blieb. Das waren keine Ohren von einem Menschen. Sie liefen ebenso leicht spitz zusammen, wie es Vikas Ohren taten. Wie es die Ohren ihrer Schwestern taten. 

“Was ist? Hilfst du mir jetzt?” - “Du bist eine Fee!” Vika konnte den Blick nicht von diesen Ohren ablenken. Ohren, die bei dieser Frau so zart und schön aussahen und geschmückt waren mit zartem silbernen Schmuck. Und so viel davon! Kleine Ketten verbanden einige der Piercings, Vika sah kleine Sterne und Monde und auch ein paar fein gearbeitete Blätter. Die Ohrläppchen waren gedehnt und der Plug verziert mit einem Wesen, das Vika noch nie in ihrem Leben gesehen hatte. “Das bist du auch, jetzt hilf mir schon!”Die pampige Ansage ließ Vika ihren Fokus neu setzen und nun griff sie augenblicklich nach den Armen der anderen Frau. Noch hatte Vika die Leiter, die normalerweise an dem Steg befestigt war, nicht montiert und so war es ein klein wenig mühsam, aber nicht unmöglich, die Frau aus dem Wasser zu ziehen. Dabei wurde Vika zwar selbst nass, doch das störte sie nicht. Es würde trocknen.

Statt jedoch sofort aufzustehen, blieben die zwei Frauen einen Moment lang auf dem Steg liegen und gönnten sich eine Verschnaufpause. Vika versuchte währenddessen, ihre Gedanken zu sortieren und spielte mit ein paar Grashalmen, die sie erreichen konnte. Zumindest so lange, bis der blaue Himmel über ihr von dem Gesicht der Fremden verdeckt wurde. Wasser tropfte in Vikas Gesicht und sie blickte in Augen, die so blau wie der Himmel über ihnen waren. 

“Du bist Vika.” Ohne es zu wollen, zuckte die junge Schottin zusammen, doch das schien die Fremde nicht zu stören. Jetzt, außerhalb des Wassers, machte sie plötzlich einen ganz munteren Eindruck. “Ich bin Olivia, aber nenn mich Liv.” 

Liv hatte ein wirklich hübsches Gesicht. Schmal geschnitten mit  hohen Wangenknochen. Die Haut war von der Sonne geküsst und ihre rotbraunen Haare hatte sie stellenweise zu Zöpfchen geflochten, in denen sie ebenso fein gearbeiteten Schmuck gearbeitet hatte, wie er in ihren Ohren zu finden war. “Ich hab dich schon eine ganze Weile gesucht.” Das Lächeln auf den vollen Lippen der anderen Frau wirkte süß und vergnügt, doch irgendetwas daran stimmte nicht. Vika wusste es sofort und dieser Eindruck wurde nur noch mehr erweckt, als Liv ihr mit dem Zeigefinger auf die Nase tippte. “Du hast etwas, das mir gehört, du kleine Diebin.” Doch sofort schüttelte Vika den Kopf. “Ich stehle nicht! Was soll ich von dir haben? Ich kenne dich ja nicht mal!” Als sie die andere Frau wegschieben wollte, um aufzustehen, setzte Liv sich frei heraus auf Vikas Bauch und pinnte ihre Arme auf  den Steg. Es gelang ihr mit einer solchen Leichtigkeit, das Vika einen Moment zu überrumpelt war, um sich zu wehren. Doch als sie es tat, wurde ihr bewusst, das Liv stärker war, als ihre zierliche Gestalt vermuten ließ.” Lass mich los und sag mir, was du von mir willst.” Vika lehnte sich gegen die andere Frau auf, doch die lachte nur, lehnte sich nach vorn und drückte Vika einen Kuss auf die Nasenspitze. “Oh, das wirst du früh genug erfahren.” Doch noch bevor Vika etwas erwidern konnte, verschwamm ihr Blick. Das Letzte, was sie sah, war Olivias vergnügtes Lächeln.

- Brett can bake! when he moved off of his family's property in college, he had to learn to cook for himself (and his roomates) in a little rinky dink apartment off campus, and during that time, he learned how to make the most MOUTH WATERING chocolate chip cookies.

his secret? he paints melted butter onto them as soon as they're out of the oven. the cookies taste like heaven, and they always bring tears to anyone's eyes the first time they take a bite.

...he can also make a damn good lasagna. old recipe from the butlers and maids that raised him in the old hand manor.

- HE LOVESSS RPGs. especially ones where you can befriend the characters??? augh. lovely. perfect. his favorite in particular is the classic MOON RPG (y'know the one that toby fox got inspiration from when working on undertale? speaking of,)

he's also played the utdr games. he ABSOLUTELY cried at the true pacifist ending (i have a headcanon for andre that ties into this actually! he played ut bc of the sans memes back in 2016, then reccomended it to brett a couple years later.)

- H☆R fan!!! while he is- and always will be- a fan of almost exclusively 1980's media, he found joy in the homestar series back when it was in its early stages. his favorite character is strong bad! (and he really enjoyed scc in dr bc when they introduced themselves in game he was like "wow! just like homestar!" lol)

- OVERBITE!!! he has an overbite. he had to get braces to fix it in middle school, but it never fully went away.

- y'all've most likely heard his voice. he's got a bit of a southern twang to him (just like me a bit :3), and his parents made him go to speech therapy to get rid of it when it was a REALLY strong accent. but nothin' can keep a country boy down, amiright folks!?

- GREATEST PERSON TO HUG EVERRRR. he's got a lot of lovin' in his heart and a lot of it is expressed through physical affection and words of affirmation, both things he excels at! brett can give the most comfortable hugs in the galaxy, from a quick squeeze around the shoulders to a literal pick me up!...and spin around. and nuzzling cheek... hehe. (he actually made reagan fall asleep in the middle of one of them, so he kinda just carried her to her lab to snooze <3.)

- uses fidgets quite frequently, especially those rings that you twist <3 he's got a glittery one that he wears on his right ring finger and it works well for him. he uses chewlery as well and both of these things help him focus quite better than without.

- hmmmm hmmm... he loves to hum. humming is good. nice noise. he's got a groovy tune in his head at all times and he ain't afraid to show it! well- hum it, in this case.

- i like to think that if you messed up his hair all the way, he'd have kind of longer hair. that's how he had his mullet in the brettfast club episode...!

the 1: stancy, from Steve’s perspective. specifically when he’s starting to move on (ignoring what happened in season 4 cause like… what?) or if you want some serious heartbreak, i’m a “steddie was friends in middle school” truther and if you listen to it like that…

cardigan: byler!!! mainly from Will’s perspective. you can’t convince me Will didn’t come home from his first playdate with Mike and tell Joyce he was gonna marry that boy. he knew this whole time he loved him, and Mike used to show him how much he loved him back

the last great american dynasty: steddie. steve’s family would see eddie as a bad influence and blame steve “being where he is” on eddie (reality; steve is happy and loved and just got a place with eddie and his family views it as a downgrade). the town would still hate eddie, and blame whatever they could on him. also the line about the neighbor makes me think of the Eddie Munson TikTok Saga and i can see eddie stealing a dog just to get back at someone being slightly rude to steve

exile: jopper. specifically Hopper seeing Joyce with Bob. Hopper saw her with Lonnie through high school, has loved her since then. He’s loved Joyce through multiple relationships, on both sides. they’ve lived this movie before

mirrorball: STEVE! that poor boy has Brett Hand syndrome and doesn’t even know his favorite color. he fully picked his personality to get friends when he was younger and he’s finally learning how to tear that down. he still “performs,” to get people to like him though, like still trying to flirt with all the girls in season 3

seven: Ronance. specifically Robin. i just know that girl is deeply nostalgic for her early childhood and brings Nancy to her grandmas house one summer, going off on 30 minute stories about all her favorite traditions and stuff and then getting to her favorite playground, where Nancy tells her she went on a trip here one summer with her family years ago and befriended a little girl at the creek and spending the day running around like this. Robin realizes she was that little girl and the pretty girl with the long braid she’d been talking about was her now-girlfriend. i also think robin would love someone in such a soft way, like with a childlike-sense of adoration

august: elmax. they’re in love your honor and if the stupid upside down would have stayed quiet in season 3, they would have had the best summer ever. they would have sleepovers every night, switching between their places. snuck out to the mall when one gets grounded

this is me trying: nancy. this girl needs therapy. she’s dealing with so much. also, “my words shoot to kill when i’m mad” “i got wasted like all my potential” “i was so ahead of the curve, the curve became a sphere” “it’s hard to be at a party when i feel like an open wound” those are so nancy-coded

invisible string: jancy. i think we as a fandom forget they likely grew up knowing each other pretty well. the way we see Joyce and Karen talking show us the families are close. it’s also not hard to imagine they’d be close with how close Mike and Will are. i think they’d have so many little things that ended up with them fitting together so well. also, i think them both being bi and the line “blues and that purple pink sky” is so funny

mad woman: Joyce. she’s painted to be the town-loon in season one. the town saw what they thought was a mother who just lost their child and decided she was crazy

epiphany: Hopper. that man lost so much and tries to just handle it by bottling it up. his ptsd from the war and all the upside down stuff, losing his daughter, the russian prison

betty: stancy, from Steve’s perspective after the movie incident

peace: Will and El (not a ship) “as long as danger’s near, and it’s just around the corner cause it lives in me” i just know these kids blame themselves for getting everyone involved in this (even though it’s not their fault) they’re able to find the solidarity in each other

hoax: platonic stobin. i think they definitely need to dive more into the dynamic now that their trauma bonded, but i think them switching off on being extra sad and the other taking care of them is extremely them

the lake: steddie, from eddie’s perspective. they get out of hawkins as soon as they can and live happily ever after
