Long run Sunday. Headed out today in the glorious sunshine for a 240 min run. Before I’d hit one mile I knew that I hadn’t paid enough attention to my nutrition yesterday...😬 My legs felt heavy and I felt slow and tired - lacking in energy. For the first 5 miles I battled with my negative soundtrack..”not as strong as last week...poor nutrition going to spoil this run..” But once I had ascended mount Gog I managed to turn my thoughts around and my run became much more positive and enjoyable. My energy intake during the run helped, but the biggest thing I need to focus on now is strength in my legs. They felt heavy and tired by mile 10 and at the end of the run I definitely didn’t have another 10 miles in them! Have to hit the gym tomorrow and get that sorted. Health & Wellness Commitments
There are so many of us this time of year, and we’ve discussed in the blog and on the podcast, that want a reset, in so many ways. Millions of people set out with great intentions and new resolutions to improve certain aspects of their lives. I believe this is great and for those that continue with them throughout the entire year, great work. However, I think, and I am in this group, we set our expectations too high and inevitably let ourselves down. I mentioned this in last weeks blog and a podcast about how we changed from setting goals each year to focusing on small daily commitments each day. We try to create these new habits and work to carry them throughout the year. Essentially, we are taking our long-term mission or purpose, and breaking it down into small, bite size chunks. There is that saying, “How do you eat an elephant? One small bite at a time.” It is the same thing we try to practice, and we are carrying into our health, wellness, and nutrition commitments.
I’ve been transparent throughout most of this year that my diet and nutrition was incredibly subpar. Typically, we go by the 80/20 rule as it relates to nutrition and diet. 80% of the time we eat clean, drink loads of water, high doses of fruits and veggies, try to stay away from the sweets, in general, we eat sensibly. The other 20% of the time we indulge. That has been our way for the last several years, ever since we’ve gotten involved with AdvoCare. Part of our nutritional program also involves AdvoCare supplements and incorporating what has been working for us the last few years. Of course, we also exercise and believe that you combine the three aspects above, you are on a good path. However, in 2018, although we continued with our exercise, our diet, nutrition, and supplementation took a turn, more like 20-80 plan in the wrong direction. Not proud to say but it took a back seat to getting things ready for the move, the actual move, and then adjusting to our new life in Arizona. Not an excuse but just reality that comes along with life.
That said, Robin and I, and the kids to some degree, have committed to getting our nutrition and supplementation back on track. We are starting today with our traditional 10-day cleanse and will follow up that with our usual routine with what I outlined above 80-20!! I am changing it up a bit after doing some research and learning some things. I toyed with the idea of going vegan or vegetarian. However, wanted to still include animal protein so, in additional to LARGE amounts of fruits and veggies, I am also incorporating eggs, chicken, turkey and fish. No red meat, no sugar, no processed foods, no alcohol, really no crap. Pretty much just water, fruits, veggies, eggs, chicken, fish, turkey and AdvoCare supplements. That is the plan, at least for the next 30 days. Actually, that is the plan for today – again, breaking things down into small, incremental goals. Wayne Dyer mentioned on one of his podcasts his strategy to quit drinking, he just said to himself, “I am not going to drink today.” He just kept saying that to himself each day until he created a habit of not drinking and stuck with it. That is how we want to move forward, follow this plan, Just For Today!!! I think if we set that expectation, not worrying about, “oh man, I CAN’T have a beer for 30 days, I CAN’T have a steak for 30 days……etc.” If we start focusing on that we will not make it. Also, I don’t want to be sitting here saying, “oh, this is not a diet, this is a new lifestyle.” I’ve done that before and look where I was in 2018; it was bullshit. I want to work on today and doing the best I can today to follow this plan. Tomorrow is a different day. Whatever the case and whatever you are trying to do to be better in 2019, make it simple and small daily commitments. I think the quote below nails it, let go of expectations and goals. Work really hard and doing the best you can today with where you are and what you have. Worry about tomorrow when it comes.
