on not being able to save those you love, even from themselves
“I've been inside his head. That guy's a piece of shit.”
“It doesn't matter. I-I don't want to be someone who leaves people behind. I want to be someone who saves his family. And for better or worse... he's family.”

“I’m really glad you’re here”, “I’ll miss us” — there is just something about Homelander expressing what seems to be genuine emotion towards people who he’s fighting against.
Which is to say: I fear he cares about these people.
And him caring about people leads to him prioritising the people over their actions. We know he doesn’t care about most people, but it seems that if he does care, he’s willing to bend his morals for them (him not agreeing with Stormfront’s politics but going along with them anyways because he doesn’t care enough about the politics and cares too much about her). I think on some level he might think that’s how it is for those other people too. He respects Butcher and Annie, so he thinks on some vague level, that feeling has to be mutual. The “rest” (Nazi politics, lives getting destroyed, Butcher’s revenge, etc) is just something that happens around them, something they do but not something they necessarily are [side note: the core thought here is also about HL and how his lack of autonomy is possibly tied to a lack of agency. What does HE believe in? He has wants and needs, but does he have beliefs? Hence it might be easier for him to overlook a clash of beliefs].
“Yes, we’re on different sides, but deep down, we respect each other, and that’s what counts” — but that’s not how the world works. The gravity of the situation escapes him. Those people genuinely despise him.

truly one of the worst ways james and sirius’ characters were butchered (both by canon and fanon) is the implication that they thought remus was the traitor or spy because he’s a werewolf.
those boys did not spend 3 YEARS becoming ANIMAGI and risking their body, mind, and soul, as well as courting azkaban just to turn around and give in to prejudice against creatures???? like yes, i realise war makes enemies of everyone and it heightens paranoia, suspicion etc etc but this is just the laziest of all reasons??? if they weren’t scared of remus in school, after watching him transform, and they still used the damn nicknames, then why would they suddenly think his furry little problem made him unreliable??
and at that!!!! what tf kind of sense does it make for them to believe that remus was the traitor and then…do absolutely nothing about it???? the whole bullshit only checks out if they all firmly believed each other. if they thought one of them was a spy for the DARK LORD, then why would they shut up about it??? both james and sirius clearly realised the war was about more than just them; they would not be hiding a potential spy if they knew about it.
this is honestly why the whole thing, and r/s reconciliation rubs me the wrong way. if they thought remus was untrustworthy, then give me a reliable reason other than him being a were. (i’ve got a few but none of them are ever used in fics). and even if they had some doubts about remus, it would still never make up for his belief that sirius betrayed the potters and joined the DEs. ever. that’s entirely a false equivalence.

i wanna whine I LOVE baul. I rlly love his tsundere ass. But I feel like his introduction to the story disconnects sebek from the rest of diasomnia kinda... Like the latest update he says he will protect what is important to him but like.... Isn't that malleus and lilia??? Ofc he loves his grandpa too but he has LITERALLY STATED that malleus and lilia are the ppl more important to him than ANYONE and like his behaviour prior to this chapter and in EVERY event absolutely supports that. Sebek felt like a character who wants to live up to his grandpas expectations but it is MALLEUS and lilia who are at the core of his life. His existence revolves around them. And his actions these last chapters when concerning lilia and malleus have been honestly so.. Mild for him??? Like ofc silver would worry abt lilia but sebek would too????? It's so weird bcause I feel like im watching a character assassination in slow motion lmao. Like u see maleona attacking lilia and silver steps in immediately but sebek just 🧍‍♂️. HELLO???? THE INSANE PERSON????? R U SURE?? idk...
I also feel like they are trying to make is so that sebek being half fae had no impact on him growing up bcause uuu but his grandpa loves him after all, and there has been no mention of it affecting his life in these chapters. We got mentions of fae vs human tensions and it was abt Lilia. It rlly feels like they just don't wanna deal with it and changed their mind. LIKE IM NOT INSANE RIGHT?? 90% of sebeks behaviour links back to him being half fae and his inferiority complex abt it?????????????CONSTANTLY having to prove himself. Needs to feel useful or he will explode. Never being strong enough. Like.... ok. It feels like instead of that, what we r getting is... racist grampa is the problem yup. thats it. Nothing to see here besides that, sebek is just bauls clone.
On one hand I didn't rlly expect for sebek to get any development this book but on the other it feels like they are erasing his Previous characterisation. To me. And I think they are kinda doing it with lilia too but the other way around. Like they over correct his character flaws by not mentioning them. We KNOW hes not that great at parenting for example, he trained silver and sebek like soldiers for a while before relaxing abt it, he is generally very rough, feeding baby silver from a Mug and stuff. He just thinks that a baby can handle getting lost in the woods. Doesnt't mean he doesnt love his kids!!!! But it's how he is!!! And we Completely ignore that this book. It feels so weird.

I talk about religious imagery in yellowjackets all the time but it wasn’t until I made this that I noticed that they all knelt down to take jackie into their mouths almost like the eucharist (jackie’s death and lottie’s notion that jackie would have wanted it this way for the baby, symbolizing death and rebirth the same way that sacrament does)… insane of them if you ask me

So the characters are pretty bland. Only one for me had been memorable enough that I googled to see if he was a romance option (spoiler- there’s only 4 and none are the dude that spent 2 hours implying I was a moron and then had to eat humble pie when I did not betray him)
The thing that really bugged me tho was during the mission where the above jackass character and I were teamed up. It’s the first Crimson Fleet mission and spoilers below
You’re tasked by some high-level United Colonies Military dude (the fact that I can’t recall anything about it tells you how cool it was) to infiltrates The Pirates
You do a handful of classic things like “deliver drugs” and “kill this dude” and then get brought into the Fleet as a recruit. Big Bad Pirate Boss takes the recruits planetside (it’s you and Jackass).
Now, military dude wants the Pirate Fleet destroyed. Pirate Fleet Big Bad Boss is there in front of me. I save the game, pull out my sword, and attack b/c I’m curious and mildly bored.
Nothing. Can’t kill him. Can’t damage him. He doesn’t even realize I’ve been trying to skewer his kidneys and liver. There’s no “think smart and kill Astrid” option. There’s no other option. You have to enter this dungeon and do what the game wants you to do.
I think the biggest sign of the grand “fall of Bethesda” or whatever is the fact that Starfield officially released a full calendar month ago today and I literally have zero idea what it is about or what happens in it. absolutely zero cultural osmosis seems to have happened, which would’ve been unthinkable for a Bethesda RPG like ten years ago

cannot get this image out of my head: dany narrowing her eyes teasingly and asking daario what he wouldn't do for his queen. him flashing her a grin and saying he'll kill for her, dirty his hands for her, devour any sin for her, love her until his dying breath, cut his heart out for her . . . only for dany to smile and lean forward, a playful challenge between them, "and what if my wish were simple? silly, even. what if i were to command you to act like a fool? to bark like a dog?" and daario, not skipping a beat, grinning wider, that gold tooth glimmering, murmuring, "woof." this sums up the energy of their relationship.

decided to watch a bit of the atla remake with a curious eager open mind, and now i'm fuming over it. it's infuriatingly faithless to the original, despite the time and resources it had.

Being sure to know a word for 10+ years and then hearing an american saying it for the first time in a completely different way you thought it was in your head is the psych version of a slap, not only the pain but the indignity of it. Like, how dare you? That word was my friend and you insult it so blatantly in front of my own eyes.

I’m currently thinking about how John and Co. refused to call Alecto by her name. They named her fury and vengeance but could not acknowledge what made her thus. They call her Annie Laurie, reducing her to her looks, those so inhuman and frightening yet beautiful all the same. John gave her the name Annabel Lee, naming her existence as a tragedy in that she was his love lost. In both instances the literary references reduce the woman mentioned to nothing but set dressing for the man of the story and it truly betrays John’s thoughts on Alecto for as much as he claimed to love her, he sees her only as the stepping stone for his own story. “For John so loved her that he had made her she. For John had loved the world.” And that is the crux of the matter, John had loved the world but she is not the world, she is its fury. John wanted her to be calm beaches and lapping waves, he wanted a wife, sister, mother, and daughter all in one, but instead, he got 7 million silenced voices crying out in agony, furious at the injustice done to them. I think subconsciously he understood that when he named her Alecto, fury of wrath from Greek Mythology. But even if he had called her Gaia she would still be furious, for was it not Gaia who gave her children the scythe to kill her husband? Was it not Gaia who roared and shrieked to the depths of Tartarus when her children were torn from her arms? The first bearer of prophecy was forged from the grief and rage of an anguished mother; the earth has always been furious. John’s fatal flaw was that he could not comprehend that the rage was for him. He who promised love and safety but cut and stripped her soul stole her children and butchered her corpse. John could never truly comprehend that what he deemed his perfect creation could resent him the way she did. He took her away and reforged her into something she could never be. John denies the resentment Alecto feels for him and we can see this reflected in how he refers to her. John is the sort of man who thinks that if he sees a woman as nothing but her looks, he can make her lesser. To him, she is Annie Laurie of beautiful bust and a personality nonexistent; To him, she is Annabel Lee, a woman so pure and lovely that the angels stole her away from him. Subconsciously, the lyctors have adopted this as well, calling her these names out of fear and not realizing the implications of what they are doing. Even in writing, she is A.L. to them because somewhere deep down they know that to name her wrath is to invite it and invoke it. John believed that if he could compress the Earth into a beautiful shell then he could control it. The Earth has been around for far longer than he could ever truly comprehend, and she is furious.
For @commanderbabygirl thoughts?
I did not realize just how many opinions I had on this until I started typing
