Biblical Womanhood
On Sunday afternoon, I was riding in a car with two of my queer religious friends, Calvin Burke and Nathan McLaughlin, and one of them mentioned the phrase “Biblical womanhood,” and how it’s used to say that women should be a submissive wife, a diligent homemaker, and a loving mother. But this sort of understanding only works if someone hasn’t read the entire Bible.
Actual Biblical womanhood is quite different. We spent a good 20 minutes naming examples from the Bible of good women and what we can learn from them.
Esther stood up to her husband the king to force him to change the law
Ruth vowed her life to a woman and works hard to support her
Mary, the mother of Jesus, preached that her son would overthrow the rich
Leah pretended to be her sister in order to marry a husband
Eve chose a path different from what Adam wanted and convinced him to come along
Deborah was a prophetess
Junia was an apostle
Hagar met God and gave him a name (there’s no record of God accepting a name from a man)
Mary of Bethany chose not to do housework but instead to listen to Jesus teach
Rahab is a prostitute who turned spy to betray the city where she lived
Anna prophesied about Christ
Hannah was a prophetess
Tamar pretended to be a prostitute and sleeps with her father-in-law, becomes pregnant, in order to force him to financially take care of her
Jael killed the head of the enemy’s army
Phoebe was a deacon
Rebecca tricked her husband into giving the inheritance to a different son than he intended
Shiphrah and Puah both disobeyed the law in order to save babies
Susanna financially supported Jesus
I don’t know how anyone can read this list and think the Bible’s definition of a good woman is someone who doesn’t talk back, doesn’t work outside the home, but instead cleans house and raises children while submitting to her husband’s will. Actual Biblical womanhood applies to women who are married, who are single, who are childless, there is no one definition of what a woman should be. She can have power. She can preach the gospel. She can be a mom and home keeper. She can be a prophet, an apostle, a deacon. She can disrupt her husband’s plans.

find the word tag!!
I don’t participate in these nearly enough considering it’s a tag game I think is really fun.
Anyway, I’m yoinking the open tag from the wonderful @albatris hehe!! :’> The words it gave are: strike, blanket, watch, taste and good!
I will tentatively tag (with no pressure to any of y’all): @emotionalsupportpuma @midnight-and-his-melodiverse @paradisiacalshroud @wherearetheplants @idkjustgowithitok and anybody else who’d be interested!!! Feel free to tag me if you do--I wanna see!! Your words are chance, winner, fall, foundation, and scrap!
I’m taking each of these from another character study thing I’ve been writing on and off for quite a bit now, haha!
strike:
Her funeral was a small affair, with only a few attendees. She hadn’t had many friends in the city, after all.
Still, Salvatore made a point to attend, and he left a bouquet of forget-me-nots for her on her grave. Though he’d never been the most sentimental man, he thought she would appreciate the gesture.
Ginger had wanted nothing more than to leave an impact on the world. She wanted to dig deep through the cracked and broken stones beneath her feet, to push and push and strike gold. All she wanted, and all she deserved, was a chance to truly shine.
Though she never had the chance to affect the world as a whole, she left an impact on one man. Because the flowers were correct. Salvatore would never forget her, and he would carry her name with him for the rest of his life.
blanket:
Thankfully, everything went as expected, and soon Leslie came screaming into the world, a tiny bundle of flailing limbs with a scowl on her face and a dark tuft of hair on her head. She wailed from the moment her tiny lungs took their first breath, as though crying out to all the stars and heavens themselves, demanding that they hear her and take her seriously.
As Anna, exhausted as she was, cradled her tiny baby in her arms, she remarked to her husband, “My, this one sure is lively!” Leslie, though she was far too young to understand the words, pouted nonetheless as she squirmed in the soft blanket she’d been swaddled in.
Westley chuckled breathlessly, his relief and pride plain on his face as he agreed, “We’ve got a real spitfire on our hands here.”
watch:
When Jesse held Leslie, he held her like she he was confused about what to do, something he clearly wasn’t used to. Though she was quiet, he watched her with wide eyes, as though waiting for her to start screaming again. For her part, Leslie stared up at him, her tiny face screwed up in a frown.
“Can someone else take it?” Jesse said after a moment.
“That’s not an it,” Anna chastised her son. “That’s your sister.”
“Of course,” Jesse said, holding Leslie out to her. “I just don’t want to hold her. All she does right now is scream, anyhow.”
taste:
Prudence Burke was, to a young Leslie, practically ancient, with a severe demeanor about her that made every interaction with her unpleasant, leaving a sour taste in the young girl’s mouth.
And she was far, far less charitable than Bethany was when explaining what happened to Scott.
“Don’t say that name, child,” she’d snapped at Leslie, her piercing blue eyes narrowed in displeasure. The wrinkles cracking across her face only served to make her look angrier, and for a moment, Leslie thought she looked like a large, angry cat. Leslie had never been afraid of cats, and she wasn’t afraid of Prudence.
“Why not?” Leslie asked, full of the persistent curiosity carried by so many children. “He’s my brother, ain’t he?”
good:
The first to hold her was her eldest brother, Scott Burke. Scott was a fine young man, having only recently come home from his time overseas. He was his parents’ pride and joy, as he’d fought on the front lines in the terrible war. Combat had left him with a prominent limp and a sad, desperate sort of exhaustion in his eyes, but he still wore a smile on his face most days.
He was a good man, the sort of man many boys aspired to be. Though he was young, he had much to be proud of. At least, that’s what he’d always been told.
Scott held Leslie like she was something fragile, something to protect. He ran gentle, world-weary fingers over the soft brown hair on her tiny head. Even when she batted his hand away with little fists and whined, he only smiled warmly.

We were in Winnipeg once again this week, this time for the wedding of best-friend-of-the-show Tim Friesen! We were joined by Danny Johnson to play some songs about love, dogs, and... a baseball tune inspired by the fact we were supposed to be at a baseball game that day, but the few drops of rain in the afternoon called that off. Bah, humbug. It made for some fun radio, though. Congratulations Tim & Bethany!

Arizal, Recordkeeping, and the World of Maktaba [Part 2]
Continued from part 1
youtube
In the second episode of the show’s prelude, Log ii, she interviews Dante, a real keeper, who tells her the harsh reality of gathering information for the global archive, explaining that he is alone “all the time.” His words cause Arizal to have a personal crisis in the next episode, Log iii. She laments that it may be impossible to be a keeper, worries about leaving her stuff behind, like her favorite (and precious) fiftieth-anniversary edition of a book titled The Littlest Royal. This item holds special value to her above anything else and represents a turning point in the show. At the same time, she wants to discover more about the world and explore it with her friends. Her spirits are lifted when Rizella calls her an “adorable bookworm” after proving her obscure knowledge of an ancient settlement. Although these episodes contrast with accepted definitions of an archivist as a person who has “expertise in the management of records of enduring value” or the head of an archives program, by being a keeper, Arizal will be “responsible for records of enduring value.” This relates to Badiola’s assessment that vlogging and future record keeping, in other formats, by Arizal, is inherently archival. [12]
Reprinted from my Wading Through the Cultural Stacks WordPress blog. Originally published on Sept. 30, 2020. Originally published on The American Archivist Reviews Portal on the same day. Thanks to Ms. Bethany Anderson for her help in the process!
In the final episode of the show’s prelude, Log iv, Arizal finally leaves her self-imposed isolation in her house. She reflects on a secretive mountain overlook about her dream to be a keeper and how her friends helped her leave the house so she would not wallow in her sadness. Arizal declares that she wants to leave the city and is ready to visit places her mother (a former ambassador) visited, discover a new part of the world, and find something to love. In the last shots of the episode, the primary athenaeum votes to accept her application. Since an athenaeum is a scientific or literary association that tries to advance learning, Arizal will be in good company with fellow scholars who enjoy learning and knowledge, including those who read for fun, taking in information “with no thought of application,” to use Dante’s words to her in the second episode.
As Arizal explores the world, collecting records for world’s public archive, she will be, as a result of her societal role as a keeper, be bound to the records themselves, and their creation. Like Dante, the keeper she talked with in the second prelude episode, Arizal will undoubtedly be chronicling her adventures using her electronic devices, whether by vlogging or something else, as she “records her journey into adulthood” in Badiola’s words. [13] Whatever Arizal collects on her journeys across the vast world will undoubtedly make the annals of history richer for all the people of Maktaba.

drew my au characters as the seven deadly sins + fear!!! i added fear bc of a concept from an old eddsworld au where fear was in control of the sins.
the explanation for each sin will be under the cut
enjoy!!!!
so first of we have william as pride. easy to explain, he's your local neurotypical narcissist^tm and has a lot of pride in himself to the point he uses it against others. (top middle)
alex is wrath because he has an extremely violet personality and will use violence to get whatever he wants. (top right)
jefferey afton (william's uncle) is gluttony not rly bc of food. i looked up the actual definition of gluttony (in terms of christianity) is basically wanting so much food you withhold it from people who need it. for jefferey though he withholds a sense of compassion for those who are "lesser" than him. (middle right)
michael is greed because he lets his sense of "i'm better than my stupid father" (not really in some aspects :/ ) and is extremely selfish as he wants to rule the afterlife on his own. (bottom right)
bethany (carlton burke's mother) is envy, as she was extremely envious of kathryn because she was essentially wealthy due to being married to william. she lets envy control her life and it makes her do horrible things to get what she wants. (bottom left)
john is sloth because he kinda adds nothing to the cult after act 2. it's also because hedoesn't put effort into his crimes, simply leaving bodies in his basement to rot before he even tried disposing of them. (middle left)
ryan is lust because when he did crimes with william, he mostly lured men with his charm (plus he used his identity as trans to make straight men think he was a "girl") and then william would kill them (sometimes ryan would do everything and william was just there to help hide the body, collect remnant, etc.). (top left)
then you have vannie/the magic rainbow, who represents fear. she is the manifestation of great, unknown power, and the fact that her strength is unknown strikes fear into the hearts of all who encounter her. she essentially has become a goddess with the power to do whatever she wants. even william is afraid of her because she was everything he wanted to be, and he had to fight her in order to restore fnaf world to its former glory. (center)
PLEASE NOTE: i did NOT make ryan lust bc he's a trans sex worker. he would've been lust before the trans headcanon anyways because of his charismatic and charming character. i am not trying to say that sex workers and trans people are just lustful people and that bullshit. ryan himself struggled in that industry, having a very hard time coping with such a ruthless work environment and he just wanted to get out, but he couldn't. the sex industry did help him develop his character though, as he used what he learned to lure men into a death trap, but that doesn't mean that he is happy about how he got that trait.
if you got to the end of this, thank you so much for reading!!!!! i haven't rambled in a long time and im rly excited to hopefully share more from my au to you guys!!!

Okay, so now I’ve finished my tantrum about queer stuff...
EVERYTHING WAS SO AMAZING.
Except for Weitz dying. I just can’t cope with that. *sobs frantically*
And there is still no sign of the murder chair, what the fuck? I’m really starting to worry about that.
Lots of flailing, and not in strictly chronological order because this is just coming to me as I type:
* The team’s reactions to Patterson being alive were just amazing (though I’m sad Kurt didn’t show more of a reaction). Zapata’s in particular was so beautiful.
* Weitz’s last words were about his hair. I just... I just... *cries uncontrollably* And the moments he got with both Afreen and Rich were so freaking amazing. Rich really does have a heart of gold, and Afreen is probably regretting every single burn she gave Weitz right about now.
* Kurt taking out six Dabbur Zann guys with no weapon, just to get to Jane... and then being apprehended anyway. That was so amazing. (Well, five and a half. Rich kind of helped.)
* The team having so many supporters amongst the agents, willing to switch sides to get Maddy’s goons out...that was perfect. And Agent Rose being back was great (even though it would have been way better to have cast the Unnamed FBI Agent Who’s Been in 62 Episodes there, and to have given her a name, finally).
* Good to see Jamie Eddy being someone besides Jaimie’s double, too.
* Watching Madeline watch everything fall apart was so freaking satisfying! Good riddance - though I really hope there was a camera on that plane, because I’m a little concerned that there were no witnesses there with her and Tasha before she died. Tasha needs all the legitimacy she can get right now.
* YES SHIRLEY DIED YES YES YES YES! (Was it just me who heard that modified voice and went ‘why are you even bothering to de-scramble it, it’s clearly Shirley!’?)
* Ivy’s picture up on the FBI screens was seriously hot. I mean, I know she’s a terrorist and terrible person, but damn...
* It was so good to see Patty and Boston doing their tech thing!
* I did suspect that Meg would come into play somehow. Hopefully she’ll get a Pulitzer or something out of this whole reveal thing. And freaking citizenship, too. She deserves that. Though I am a little affronted at her version of events - she was the one who called off the engagement, not Reade!
* I’m still not over Weitz’s final scene, after everyone assumed he just ran again. He redeemed himself in the end - now THAT was a redemption arc. WAAAAAAAY better than Keaton’s.
* Afreen was so happy Patty was alive, it was ADORABLE. I really hope she *is* in 5x11, even though social media said 5x10 was her last table read. She deserves to be there at the end with everyone else.
* I love how everyone totally accepted the team’s lead on the case, and how the team know that they have no real authority - they’re just doing what needs to be done because that’s what they do.
* Kathy is still a nutjob. But when I thought she was sacrificing herself, I did actually find myself tearing up a little. Now THAT is good writing!
* Rich’s distrust of Kathy, followed by his smugness when he was proved right, was just so fantastic.
* Boston’s poor finger. :( I hope Patty at least drove him to the hospital. Though him cutting and running again really didn’t seem like a good idea, given that the team will look bad for letting him go, especially after losing Kathy. :/
* I’m sad that Madeline and Boston didn’t get to meet again. The snark-off would have been amazing.
* I’m so relieved Allie is confirmed to be okay, since Kurt mentioned that Bethany was going back to her mother. I was scared she’d end up in the aforementioned murder chair for leverage against Kurt.
* WHERE IS NAS? I need Nas.
* I need Patty and Lincoln reconnecting at Weitz’s funeral, if we’re not going to get Patty and Tasha together in canon.
* I also need for the Dabbur Zann to have not killed poor, ZIPped Gregory Burke, now that Maddy isn’t there to protect him. I hope Tasha can find him and help him remember who he is.
* Why do I get the feeling this new interim Director is going to keep them all out of prison for taking down Ivy, but fire them all from the FBI and maybe put them on probation as a compromise? I really hope that’s the way it goes. I mean, it will really hurt Kurt to get fired, but given the alternatives...
* That final scene where Jane locks herself in...Fuck, that was heartbreaking, for both Jane and for Kurt. I really hope the denaturing of the ZIP means the effects are temporary and/or negated. Please, please, please...
* I 100% stand by my theory that MG pissed off somebody at NBC, because what the fuck? A two-episode finale would have been better than two episodes and THAT cliffhanger!
I’m sure I have more to say, but that’s all that’s coming for now. What a wild ride!
