'That Troubles Our Monkey Again' in Fun (1872) / André Gill in La Petit Lune (1871) / 'A Venerable Orangutang' in The Hornet (1871) / 'Professor Darwin' by Faustin Betbeder in Figaro's London Sketch-Book (1874) / Darwin crashing through credulity and ignorance by André Gill in La Petit Lune (1878)
Darwin in Caricature
"Generally speaking it is not easy for an artist to draw a picture of scientist that also conveys his or her theory - Newton has his mythical apple of course, Einstein his formulae. But these are accoutrements specific to the kind of knowledge produced, merely pictorial conventions for representing abstract achievements in the same way as a scientist is often depicted in a laboratory or book-lined study. The caricatures of Darwin, by contrast, actually show him as his theory or as a consequence of his theory." -Dr Janet Browne
In the years following the publication of On the Origin of Species and The Descent of Man, Charles Darwin was widely caricatured as an ape or monkey, physically linking him with his theory and its implications. Amusingly, Darwin was known to collect many of these caricatures of himself.

I knew that they had a bunch of teeth stuck up in their head but I didn’t know it was 90% though!
Also, here’s a historical fact:
Mayor and Pierson had a photography business taking portrait photos. Rival photographers, Thiebault, Betbeder, and Schwalbe altered one of Mayor and Pierson’s photos. Mayor and Pierson took them to court about it and the court had to decide if the portrait was considered art in order to determine if the rival photographers were copying. Betbeder, and Schwalbe produced a declaration signed by many of the leading artists of the day declaring that photography was not art, and Mayor and Pierson’s attorney compared the photos to famous paintings and convincingly equating the camera to the brush. Then France’s Supreme Court established photography as an art under French copyright law.
honestly idk why but you seem fun to hang out with
I will sit there and not talk unless I’m telling you facts about weird things

This is a very effective example of how to explain the plot of the story using sequential art. There is absolutely no question about what the point of the page is. The bright sepia tone color scheme is great, too. (Heavy Metal #242, July 2009 – Page 70 The Coffins Will Dance No More by Betbeder and Droal)

Journey to Greenland
Setting up camera and crew in a frozen and far-flung corner of the world, director Sébastien Betbeder presents a culture along with a movie. Fact meets fiction in a narrative where all but one of the characters -- Nathan - share their names with the corresponding actor. .
The story centers around would-be actors Thomas (played by Thomas Blanchard) and Thomas (played by Thomas Scimeca), who leave nothing but unfulfilled dreams in Paris as they embark on a visit turned adventure to Kullorsuaq, where the shorter Thomas’ father found his bliss some 20 years earlier. The plot isn’t as vibrant, dramatic or captivating as the landscape, which pops almost three-dimensionally -- icy blue sky touching snowy white hills. It’s clear when a helicopter deposits Thomas and Thomas on the ice floe that is Kullorsuaq that they are soul searching. And when the helicopter returns, it’s unclear if they found what they were looking for. Little does it matter. The story may be merely a vehicle for Betbeder to bring this Inuit village to light.
We encounter the villagers seal-hunting and ice-fishing, singing and dancing, and in one surrealistic episode, rapping. Nearly every scene is bathed in the summer’s omnipresent sunlight as the camera rarely moves indoors. The crunch of snow and the laughter of children fill what would otherwise be silence, as there are no cars and no accompanying street noises.
This movie is mesmerizing..And it’s a bit sad, considering that traditions maintained for hundreds of years are teetering. Through brief encounters with the internet -- when the pesky dial-up connection is working -- the villagers see what they are missing. For one boy, that glimpse is devastating. For the rest, it’s a reminder that change is coming. With technology, the world is infiltrating. With climate change, a way of life is eroding. Aside from two stomach-churning hunting scenes (you were warned), “Journey to Greenland” is a pretty postcard from a land few of us will visit. It isn’t great cinema, but watching it is time well spent.
