Writer Spotlight: Jamie Beck

Jamie Beck is a photographer residing in Provence, France. Her Tumblr blog, From Me To You, became immensely successful shortly after launching in 2009. Soon after, Jamie, along with her partner Kevin Burg, pioneered the use of Cinemagraphs in creative storytelling for brands. Since then, she has produced marketing and advertising campaigns for companies like Google, Samsung, Netflix, Disney, Microsoft, Nike, Volvo, and MTV, and was included in Adweek Magazine’s “Creative 100” among the industry’s top Visual Artists. In 2022, she released her first book, An American in Provence, which became a NYT Bestseller and Amazon #1 book in multiple categories, and featured in publications such as Vogue, goop, Who What Wear, and Forbes. Flowers of Provence is Jamie’s second book.

Can you tell us about how The Flowers of Provence came to be?

I refer to Provence often as ‘The Garden of Eden’ for her harmonious seasons that bring an ever-changing floral bounty through the landscape. My greatest joy in life is telling her story of flowers through photography so that we may all enjoy them, their beauty, their symbolism, and their contribution to the harmony of this land just a bit longer.

How do your photography and writing work together? Do you write as part of your practice?

I constantly write small notations, which usually occur when I am alone in nature with the intention of creating a photograph or in my studio working alone on a still life. I write as I think in my head, so I have made it a very strict practice that when a thought or idea comes up, I stop and quickly write the text in the notes app on my phone or in a pocket journal I keep with me most of the time. If I don’t stop and write it down at that moment, I find it is gone forever. It is also the same practice for shooting flowers, especially in a place as seasonal as Provence. If I see something, I must capture it right away because it could be gone tomorrow.

You got your start in commercial photography. What’s something you learned in those fields that has served you well in your current creative direction?

I think my understanding of bridging art and commerce came from my commercial photography background. I can make beautiful photographs of flowers all day long, but how to make a living off your art is a completely different skill that I am fortunate enough to have learned by working with so many different creative brands and products in the past.

Do you remember your first photograph?

Absolutely! I was 13 years old. My mother gave me her old Pentax 35mm film camera to play with. When I looked through the viewfinder, it was as if the imaginary world in my head could finally come to life! I gave my best friend a makeover, put her in an evening gown in the backyard of my parents’ house in Texas, and made my first photograph, which I thought was so glamorous! So Vogue!

You situate your photographic work with an introduction that charts the seasons in Provence through flowers. Are there any authors from the fields of nature writing and writing place that inspire you?

I absolutely adore Monty Don! His writing, his shoes, and his ease with nature and flowers—that’s a world in which I want to live. I also love Floret Flowers, especially on social media, as a way to learn the science behind flowers and how to grow them.

How did you decide on the order of the images within The Flowers of Provence?

Something I didn’t anticipate with a book deal is that I would actually be the one doing the layouts! I assumed I would hand over a folder of images, and an art director would decide the order. At first, it was overwhelming to sort through it all because the work is so personal, and I’m so visual. But in the end, it had to be me. It had to be my story and flow to be truly authentic. I tried to move through the seasons and colors of the landscape in a harmonious way that felt a bit magical, just as discovering Provence has felt to me.

How do you practice self-care when juggling work and life commitments alongside the creative process?

The creative process is typically a result that comes out of taking time for self-care. I get some of my best ideas for photographic projects or writing when I am in a bath or shower or go for a long (and restorative) walk in nature. Doing things for myself, such as how I dress or do my hair and makeup, is another form of creative expression that is satisfying.

What’s a place or motif you’d like to photograph that you haven’t had a chance to yet?

I am really interested in discovering more formal gardens in France. I like the idea of garden portraiture, trying to really capture the essence and spirit of places where man and nature intertwine.

Which artists do you return to for inspiration?

I’m absolutely obsessed with Édouard Manet—his color pallet and subject matter.

What are three things you can’t live without as an artist?

My camera, the French light, and flowers, of course.

What’s your favorite flower to photograph, and why?

I love roses. They remind me of my grandmother, who always grew roses and was my first teacher of nature. The perfume of roses and the vast variety of colors, names, and styles all make me totally crazy. I just love them. They simply bring me joy the same way seeing a rainbow in the sky does.

LOOSE ENDS — A collection of drabbles to pick up the threads I started months ago. TOTAL WORD COUNT: 3.0k FEATURING: Yoon Mingeun, Kang Haksu, Andrew Han, Ahn Jinguk, Lee Taein, Oh Kiyoung, The Midas Touch

JULY 2024. A direct epilogue to this drabble. Previously posted as screenshots on my main but I don't think anyone saw that so here we go again.

Two hours after having his phone confiscated, Mingeun knocks on Haksu's bedroom door.

Haksu opens it, looking clean and put together for someone just sitting in his room. Sitting in his room, and likely eavesdropping on everything they said. "I heard what happened," he says, confirming Mingeun's suspicions.

He steps inside, trying not to look too closely at the Bible on Haksu's bedside table, or the cross hanging above his bed, the only decoration on otherwise spotless wall. A diffuser sits on top his dresser, filling the room with a faint pine scent.

Haksu shuffles through the dresser for a moment, and tosses three iPhone boxes onto his bed. They're all slightly different variants of the iPhone 15, in blue and white and black.

"You can have any of them," Haksu says. "I don't know why our fans keep giving me iPhones when I use a Samsung."

Mingeun doesn't get gifts like that. Haksu has his phones, and Andrew received a high-end laptop. He must be doing something wrong.

He doesn't say anything, just points to the plastic container in Haksu's hands. "What's that?"

Haksu opens the lid, and that's when Mingeun realizes it's full of index cards. "SIM cards."

There must be fifteen or so in the box, by his best judgement. Each index card has the SIM card taped to it, with a phone number across the top and a series of dates running down the right side of the card.

"You keep these?" Mingeun asks, plucking one out of the box. The dates on it cover the end of 2022 and a few months of 2023.

"I trade them in if they get really bad," Haksu says. "The company pays for most of these. I switch them out when I need to."

He flicks through the container and eventually pulls out a card that looks no different from the rest of the cards. "Here. I haven't used this one in a while. You probably won't get too many calls."

The most recent date on it is June 2022. Mingeun accepts it, and tries to peel the card off without ripping the paper. The paper rips anyway.

He looks at the phones again. "This is fine with you? I can take it?"

Haksu nods impatiently. He produces a pen from somewhere and adds a new line to the index card: Mingeun's name and July 2024 to an unknown date. "I don't use them."

Mingeun picks the blue one, because it's the most basic model. His own phone is still the 12. The upgrade doesn't feel right, not when it happened because Daewoong confiscated his phone.

"Thanks," he says awkwardly.

Haksu waves him off. "Don't worry about it." The cards and the two remaining phones disappear back into his dresser, and Mingeun is left clutching his new phone like a lifeline.

SEPTEMBER 2024. A sequel to this drabble.

Andrew's second visit to the Danyoung Group is no less intimidating than the first. It doesn't have to be a meeting at all. It could be an email. A text message. An Instagram DM. Does Jinguk even use Instagram? Probably not.

His answer is one word. In hindsight, it's ridiculous he even thought otherwise. All it took was spending a day almost, but not quite, third-wheeling with Jaeseop and Jaeseop's girlfriend, Seoyeon. It wasn't supposed to be like that. It was supposed to be an outing for Fable on one of Jaeseop's rare days off, with Seoyeon accompanying them only because Jaeseop had so few days off. Then the rest of the group started dropping like flies in the days leading up their lunch: Kiyoung and Intak at the premiere of an anime film, Haksu on something akin to a date of his own, Byeonghwi doing something he's been incredibly cagey about, and Mingeun's second or third bout of house arrest this year. Andrew's lost count.

The lack of an audience at lunch gave Andrew the courage to ask Jaeseop about his predicament, and Jaeseop the freedom to chew out Andrew in public—all while Seoyeon sat there quietly and ate her food.

The direct consequence of that day is today. This time, Andrew takes the elevator to the ninth floor, and heads down the hall until he reaches the room labeled 923 in gold text on a shiny black plaque. He knocks first, then pushes the door open without waiting for a response.

The first thing he notices is that the view from the ninth floor isn't much different from the view from the fifteenth. This room, too, has a wall made entirely of glass. Better to lord over the people below you with, Andrew thinks.

He bows politely to Jinguk, standing near the window and doing the very lording Andrew was just thinking of. "Good afternoon."

"It's good to see you again, Andrew," Jinguk says. The words themselves might be warm, but the delivery lacks any sort of emotion. "Have you given any thought to my proposal?"

Straight to the point. Andrew hasn't even taken a seat. To be fair, he doesn't think he wants to take a seat. It's a far cry from the waffling Taein tends to do.

"I have," he says, hovering uncertainly near one of the two chairs in the room.

"Have a seat, and we'll talk." Despite his words, Jinguk doesn't make a move.

Andrew sits, against his better judgement. "I appreciate your offer," he says—calm, practiced, rehearsed, like he's staring down a camera—"but I'm going to have to decline. I'm staying with Fable." His heart jackhammers wildly in his chest, and he has to make a conscious effort to keep his knee from bouncing up and down.

"I suspected as much," Jinguk says. "I hoped you'd be more pragmatic."

Andrew is pragmatic. He's so pragmatic he knows he stands to lose too much if he leaves Fable now. And he's done his research on C Entertainment's artists. He sees two potential paths in that future: being indefinitely shelved or constantly scrutinized for payola.

He gives a half-hearted shrug. "I don't know if you're looking for pragmatism. You might want to try selfishness or greed. I can recommend Mingeun or Haksu." He doubts either of them would take Jinguk's deal, though he knows they'd be tempted in the same way he was.

Jinguk's expression grows stormy. His brow tightens, and he fixes Andrew with a disapproving look. "You must not understand the magnitude of your decision. This is not the sort of opportunity anyone can receive. They are liabilities, more so than you."

But Andrew is a liability too. He champions for himself, enough to butt heads with Mingeun on a wide range of topics. He'll bend and bend and bend—he had to, to debut—but he won't break. There are parts of himself he can't give up on, and that, he thinks, makes him more of a liability than someone like Mingeun. He doesn't say any of that out loud.

"They're people," he says, "not liabilities."

"This is a business, and you are an idol. It is a lesson both you and Taein-ssi have yet to learn." Jinguk's bottom lip curves up in a sneer.

Andrew doesn't know what he has to do with Taein. The side he picked, the battle line he drew in the sand. Something like that.

"It's unfortunate you have yet to come to your senses," Jinguk continues, though he doesn't sound disappointed or resigned in the slightest. He checks the time on his impossibly shiny watch. "My two pm will arrive shortly. I assume you know your way out."

Andrew nods quickly. He recognizes a dismissal when he hears one, and he's only too happy to leave. "If I ever come to my senses, you'll be the first to know."

As he leaves, he can't shake the feeling that he got off too easily, like he willing walked into the jaws of the beast and emerged unscathed. Jinguk appeared to respect Andrew's answer, even if he didn't appear to respect Andrew himself. It'll dog him, he knows, one more enigmatic piece in the puzzle of Jinguk's design.

OCTOBER 2024. Live Haksu reaction to this article.

"What is this?" Haksu asks. He pinches a sheet of paper between two fingers, as if it's poisonous. The glaring headline on the printed article reads, "Zenith Entertainment to Press Charges Against Fable Sasaeng." It's hard to read in the dim parking garage lighting, but Haksu has already committed the important parts to memory.

Taein's gaze, bored and disinterested, flicks over the paper and then Haksu. "It's what you wanted." He steps left in a valiant effort to get to his car.

Haksu mirrors his movements. If he could have snuck into his office to borrow his car keys, he would have. As it is, he has to settle for body-blocking his boss instead. "No, it's not. This is loud and messy. I wanted something discrete."

"Like a hit man," Taein says drily. He makes another unsuccessful attempt to get to the driver's side door of his car.

Haksu shrugs. That would be preferable. He folds the paper in half. Over the past couple of months, he's learned how to play Eunmyeong's game, picked up all her rules and added a few of his own. He's managing so far, by himself. He doesn't need Taein's lawsuit interfering with his carefully arranged house of cards.

"She never assaulted me," he says.

"Not everything is about you."

This is. Haksu knows that for a fact. From the moment he read the headline, he knew the anonymous A was Eunmyeong. No one else followed him home. He doesn't need to be a detective. Anyone with two brain cells to rub together could figure that out.

"Think about it, Haksu," Taein says. He rolls his shoulders back. "I'd like to leave work today."

Haksu doesn't budge. "Do you think this will stop her?"

"As much as I'd like to be able to predict the future, I can't say what she will or will not do." He levels a piercing gaze at Haksu. "Don't you know her better?"

There's an accusation in there, if he can be bothered to find it. He's been on more pseudo-dates with her than he'd like to admit. Not enough to have lost count, but enough to recognize certain pillars of their otherwise tenuous relationship. He would know her, if their relationship was more even. As it stands, she's so obsessed with him that they don't talk about much else. Haksu only knows what her last name is because she told his mom. He doesn't know when her birthday is. He doesn't know where she lives or where she grew up or what her favorite food is.

"I don't know her at all," he answers. "Why did it take you this long to press charges?"

"Proper legal cases take time," Taein says, forming each word slowly, as if they cause him physical pain.

Haksu opens his mouth.

"For the second time, Haksu, I don't have any mafia connections you can take advantage of."

Haksu closes his mouth.

Taein continues to speak. "I wouldn't go through with this if there wasn't a reasonable chance the charges would stick. Have faith."

If there's one thing Haksu has, it's faith. He has faith in spades. His faith only falters when it comes to Taein. He should trust his boss more. He doesn't. He steps aside reluctantly, finally giving Taein access to his car.

Taein doesn't even thank him. All he does is pull the driver's side door open and say, "It's not your problem to worry about. Focus on your work, and don't go around giving phone numbers to your group members."

Haksu takes personal offense to that. He tamps it down and responds with his usual decorum instead. "Good night, sajangnim." He doesn't think Taein hears him. The door slams closed as he speaks.

Taein's headlights cast dramatic shadows as Haksu turns tail, shredding the paper as he goes. He doesn't see a problem with giving Mingeun a new phone number—and a new phone. He doesn't approve of everything Mingeun does, but he doesn't have to. He was just doing his duty as a friend.

He pauses as he reaches the fresh evening air, the breeze a welcome respite from the stuffiness of the inside of the garage. Haksu stuffs the shreds of paper into his pockets. Taein can do whatever he wants. Fine. So can he. He wonders if she knows she's going to court soon. It would be courteous to warn her, wouldn't it? He watches Taein's Mazda make a sharp right and nearly bowl over a pedestrian. Then he slips his phone out of his back pocket and writes a quick text.

OCTOBER 2024. Not a sequel to anything. It's more of an update of what Kiyoung is up to and the relevance of The Midas Touch to Fable.

As a collective, The Midas Touch is louder, rowdier, and more energetic than Kiyoung remembers being at their age. The excitement of a newly debuted group is palpable, but not quite contagious. That, and it pales in comparison to the sheer malice simply radiating from Haksu.

"Who pissed you off?" he mutters under his breath, adjusting the mic pack clipped to the back of his waist band more than he should.

"None of your business," Haksu mutters back.

"You'll keep it together?"

"Of course." The words are sharp. He corrects himself a moment later, softening into a more relaxed posture and expression. "I always do." He has the gall to wink at Kiyoung.

It's uncomfortable, watching the ease at which Haksu slides between his true feelings and his perfect image. Kiyoung suppresses a shudder.

Their role today is a supporting one. It's an extremely staged moment in The Midas Touch's extremely staged day. The idea is to present them with the same friendly and relatable boy-next-door image they built as trainees. Kiyoung thinks there are other groups who already occupy that niche, but he's not their creative director or management in any way.

The original plan was for him and Haksu to make a brief appearance to congratulate them on their first music show win. It was supposed to appear spontaneous. That plan fell through last week, when it became very apparent that TMT would be the runner-up to a project group Kiyoung's never hehrd of. Almost all of their music is in English, with the excepption of the song they promoted to win a week's worth of music shows.

So the script was rewritten, and now Kiyoung and Haksu are congratulating them on their debut. Never mind the fact that they already did that, right after TMT's music show debut, back when Fable was promoting their own album. This time is different because Haksu has a cake. He also has strict instructions to give it to Shinji, according to the script Kiyoung read a couple of hours ago. Shinji is, according to the same script, the clumsiest member by far.

He suspects someone is already prepared to clean frosting off the floor.

The long-awaited signal from the couple of supervising producers—a frantic flurry of waving, gesturing, and ushering—finally arrives. The smallest glance sideways tells Kiyoung Haksu is immaculately prepared. He has his cake, and he's turned down the malice to a less overpowering level.

Kiyoung gets the door. He makes it two steps into the room before there are three handheld cameras focused on him—an important part of TMT's relatability. They're greeted with overlapping cries of, "Sunbaenim! You didn't have to!" and "Haksu-hyung, is that for us?"

Kiyoung feels sorry for the editors who have to piece this footage together.

Haksu unceremoniously shoves the cake towards Shinji. The eldest member of the group, Elias, swoops in and intercepts it instead. "He'll drop it," he says, balancing both the cake and his camera.

"That might be the point," Kiyoung concedes quietly.

Though he looks loathe to play along, Elias passes it back to Shinji.

"Congratulations on your debut," Haksu says, an ever-consummate professional.

Then, message delivered, he surprises Kiyoung by making a beeline back towards the door.

Kiyoung grabs him by the wrist. "You can't leave," he hisses under his breath.

"You can come too," Haksu says, tugging his wrist free.

Kiyoung jerks his head towards TMT. "They're filming." A camera is usually the magic switch that gets Haksu to play nice.

Haksu turns around and flashes his usual charismatic smile. "Can you please cut the cameras?" he asks, tone syrupy sweet.

"Deadass?" Arjun asks from behind his own camera. All five of them break into sycophantic laughter.

Kiyoung assumes the cameras are still rolling. "He's not usually like this," he says, making a rather pathetic attempt to salvage the remnants of Haksu's image.

A silent look passes through the group, communicating something Kiyoung can't even begin to imagine.

Elias seems to speak for all of them when he says, "I thought so." He angles his camera back to Haksu. "Anything else for today's TMT Log?"

He's giving them a way out. Kiyoung nearly sags with relief.

Haksu seems to compose himself, straightening up and clasping his hands together. "The Midas Touch are our very precious juniors who recently made their debut. They've worked very hard to get to where they are today. Please make sure to show them lots of love and support!" He rattles off a few lines that are much more fitting of his usual persona.

Elias gives them a little nod, and this time, when Haksu runs for the door, Kiyoung doesn't stop him. He recites his own parting message, spit-balling whatever comes to mind—another congratulatory message, a half-plea to the editors to showcase Haksu in a positive light, permission to visit Fable whenever they'd like.

"I thought you said you could keep it together," Kiyoung says quietly as soon as they're in the hallway again. He suspects most of that footage will be cut. Shinji didn't even drop the cake.

Haksu flicks his bangs out of his eyes. "I did."

They have very different definitions of keeping it together, he thinks, disconnecting his microphone. Whatever is happening in Haksu's head is something he'd never confess to Kiyoung.

"Everything is fine," Haksu says.

Kiyoung suspects this is supposed to be reassuring. He doesn't believe it at all.

Are I and two more people the assholes for cutting a friend with post-partum depression off our lives? Warning, this one's LONG.

For starters, there's five people involved on this. There's me (22NB), my best friend (23M) whom we will call A, a friend (24F) called V for this, yet another friend called C (23M) and finally, the ex-friend (23F) who A, V and me cut off our lives. She will be called T. A, V, T and I were all friends since 2018, and C, who appeared in 2022, was friends with everyone minus T, since she never got along with him. T and V were specially close. I hope this doesn't ends up too confusing, and keep in mind english is my second language.

T got pregnant from her ex (he was already her ex when she got pregnant, as they kept having sex) somewhere in 2021, she doesn't knows when because she noticed when she was on her 3 month already (missing her period was to be expected since she had a surgery on her ovaries). To make it short, her ex wanted her to abort but she didn't wanted to, and even if she wanted, she couldn't, because she surpassed the amount of weeks where she could have a legal abortion on a safe environment. This led to several fights between the two and their families and eventually he completely disappeared from her life. She was devastated, but she wanted the baby and was excited to be a mother despite everything, so we were all happy for her and we were on her side. Things were relatively fine during the pregnancy, at least it seemed so.

I was the first person who was friends with C, around February I think. I introduced him to A, V and T on my birthday (September), and that night only C, A, V and I went to a nightclub (it wasn't planned), as T was near her due date. Turns out, while we were on the nightclub, she gave birth. We (minus C) were overjoyed, because we waited SO long and finally the baby was here. However, this is when the problems started (although we later learned T used V to vent about the abandonment of her ex during the whole pregnancy, and never listened to V when she wanted to vent on her own or even tell her about her day).

Besides for some reason T started to do EXTREMELY classist comments (such as refusing to eat chocotorta, a cake made of chocolate cookies and dulce de leche, because it was "the dessert of the poor", or saying we were acting/dressing "like poor people" sometimes. Sincerely, she is middle class as much, yet pretended she was at least upper-middle class with her attitudes) and showing a very fatphobic attitude towards herself and other people, she started to be straight up cruel towards V because she was jealous of her "carefree life" (V has to deal with an abusive mother on her home and trauma from an abusive ex, btw), and there were three events that strained the relationship even more.

1- When she threw a tantrum on the group chat because A, V, and me went to a concert with C and started to say she had COVID (we saw each other the day before) and we probably spread it everywhere, and that we were all abandoning her and never cared about her and her baby actually while sobbing on a voice message, despite we tried to calm her down and assure her we loved her and her son she kept doing a scene until A told her to stop.

2- On A's birthday, she was acting like an annoying rich girl despite saying she didn't had money to buy A a present. Literally investigated C's phone (Samsung A20) without asking him and then just said "My mom has an A51". She also kept constantly misgendering C (he's trans), which is even more infuriating because A is also trans and she genders him correctly. She has no excuse, we presented him as a guy, and we used he/him while she used she/her

3- When we went to a 80's themed party and during the previous stage before going she was physically aggressive with V (literally threw objects at her including A RECENTLY LIT LIGHTER WHO WAS STILL HOT), and during the party acted as if A was her boyfriend (he's gay), alongside wanting to basically pit me and A against V the whole night.

There's also the fact that she seemed uninterested and even a bit cruel towards her son, such as giving him really hot milk (he was bottle-feed) and not caring about his reactions, or even "accidentally" DROPPING HIM OFF THE BED HE WAS IN. One day we decided we had enough, and I wrote a really long message on our group chat expressing our feelings.

The thing where we may be the assholes is that she replied some days later, also a rather long message, and we ignored her for a month without even opening the chat. We only read it when she left the chat, in which she explained she was diagnosed with post-partum depression and that she fell again on her eating disorder due to gaining weight during the pregnancy, alongside having financial problems on her family, being full of debts. She was sorry, and wanted to "fix things". But it's kind of too late now to speak to her. So, were we the assholes? She WAS an asshole but maybe we should have forgive her due to her circumstances. Thanks to whoever read this long post.

Aizawa Shouta x gn!reader (with a hint of past shirakumo oboro x reader)

You’re snuggled up close to Aizawa who’s massaging your scalp as your favorite TV show is running on the television. It’s a typical Thursday evening and usually you both would have work in the morning but together with Yamada you’ve all three taken the day off tomorrow. It stings in Aizawa’s chest if he thinks too hard about tomorrow, so he tries not to. You laugh at a joke being made and he lets air out through his nose. You reach for the chocolate on the table in front of you and Aizawa’s heart squeezes as you offer him a piece before you take one for yourself. You’re good at that, putting others before yourself. He declines with a kiss and a thank you to your forehead and you shrug, “more for me, then.”

You’re trying to be stealth but it’s not lost on Aizawa how often you check the clock and the shaky sighs you release each time the handle has traveled further and further, closer and closer to the date and also farther and farther from the day you last saw him. It’s scary to count down like this and as he’s done all day - if not all week actually - Aizawa pushes it away, deep down inside him where he doesn’t have to think too hard about it.

Because just like Shirakumo, he’s good at putting others before himself as well, even if he doesn’t believe he can even compare to a boy like him.

Your feet fidgets under the shared blanket and the laughs you’ve let out during the funny bits of the episodes has worryingly diminished. They’re now as bland and performative as Aizawa’s small snorts to indicate he enjoyed the joke. Aizawa’s massaging of your scalp and nape has increased in pressure, exuding his own tension through the motions. There’s no more chocolate and while none of you even wanted anything to begin with, it’s served as a good fidget and distraction through the excruciating long hours you’ve been pacing through like a marathon this evening. You know Yamada is on shift at his radio station and Aizawa sucks in his teeth when he realizes neither of you can call him at midnight.

“Should I turn on the radio?” he asks as the outro begins for the fifth episode and you nod as you push yourself closer to him, finding comfort in the closeness. He reaches over you for the television remote as you reach for the remote for the radio. You can’t believe it’s 2022 and Aizawa Shouta still owns a radio and CD-player. In the back of your mind you know it’s so he can hear Yamada in the most authentic state with a quality of sound he just can’t get on his outdated Samsung phone but the thought is still so ridiculous that it brings a smile to your face despite the time and rapidly approaching date.

A song ends on the radio at precisely midnight and you know it’s Yamada’s own planning and doing. There’re a few beats of quiet before you hear Yamada inhale and Aizawa feels his heart shatter in a million fragments as his best friend opens his mouth. Aizawa knows it’s only you and him that’ll be able to detect the wobbliness of his voice in his next words,

“Today has just become May 5th and that marks a very special day,” Yamada laughs and continues, “today my best friend’s turning 30. So I’d like to celebrate and play his favorite song. Dear Generation Alpha listeners, you might not recognize this song but I promise it was big when I was young!”

As the volume of the song slowly rises, you hear Yamada mutter out a “God I sounded old,” too close to the mic and you both snort of laughs. Aizawa hears the first tell-tale of your emotions as you sniffle in too. The vocals in Hoobastank’s The Reason makes you squeeze Aizawa’s arm and he reacts by squeezing you closer to him and kiss the top of your head.

You’ve never been sure why this was Shirakumo’s favorite song. You’d often asked and he’d made a joke about the beat and the speed in which he creates clouds fits, but the lyrics are so unfit for him and has always felt so. Aizawa feels the warm wetness of your tears as they glide down his forearm. He steels himself and evens out his breathing.

“Do you remember back when he accidentally stole that chocolate milk because he was distracted by the teller and none of them noticed?” Aizawa chuckles and heaves a breath in to add, “yeah, she was madder about the fact that he came back to pay because she thought if she’d missed it, he could’ve just kept it.”

A shaky laugh leaves you as you continue the story after Aizawa, “yeah, she saw me waiting for him outside and insisted he got one for free so we could have one each.”

Aizawa knows the stories you’re gonna be re-telling. You tell them every year, twice. For his birthday and for the date of his death. The heaviness you’ve all three felt on his birthday hasn’t been as immense in many years but a milestone like 30 had punched all of you in the gut when you’d counted and realized.

You sniffle again and you try to conceal a sob behind a laugh, “or that time he changed clothes in the classroom.”

That one actually succeeds in making Aizawa laugh because as annoying as the situation had been back then, it’d morphed into a sort of happy, core memory of his friend after he’d gotten older.

You exchange a few more stories of his chaotic but always good-natured way of interacting with the world, of the laughs and his never-ending attempts at brightening up anyone’s day. After another one of how he had been one of the people hyping up Yamada’s hero-persona haircut, you’d turned around in his grasp and hidden your face in his chest before full-blown sobs had left you.

Aizawa is biting the underside of his lips as you let out heart-wrenching sobs, the ones that makes his stomach ache. He coos at you and kisses the top of your head while his hand is drawing comforting circles over your back.

“I miss him,” you choke out before you hiccup and Aizawa nods, “me too.”

“He should’ve been here, Shou, he should’ve." you cry out and Aizawa can’t hold back his own shaking, “I know.”

“But he’s not here. He’s not anywhere.”

Aizawa’s often felt out of place compared to his fellow humans around him, felt like he was one link off in emotional range and rationality. One thing he’s completely in tune with other people in is grief. Grief has struck him as natural as unnatural as it is. The need to talk about the days where his friend was alive, to go to his graveside and have conversations, the keeping of plants he knew Shirakumo liked. All of those things have made perfect sense to his process as much as they weren’t logical to his rational mind at all. He feels at ease when you make his favorite dish that you’ve perfected for the sake of his birthday or the days where you stop by U.A with a can of Shirakumo’s favorite soda for you, Yamada, and him to enjoy.

But he doesn’t like when other people are grieving. He’s unsure as to what helps and he feels inadequate. But he supposes he can’t do too much wrong, seeing you still decide to spend every terrible death anniversary and birthday with him, comforted by his stunted emotional availability.

You try to breathe in through your nose but it’s effectively blocked by all the snot your body’s producing from such a heavy cry. Aizawa hushes you with a kiss to reassure you he’s not going away before he pulls away to reach for the tissues strategically placed behind the couch, in his reach.

You sit up and take one from his hand before you blow your nose. Aizawa tells you good job, merely to make you smile and he succeeds. You throw the used tissues towards the coffee table and none of you says anything as you miss.

“He was supposed to be here. We were supposed to go to his Mom’s. I was supposed to be making the food with her,” you’re crying again, fidgeting with your hands. Aizawa’s unsure whether or not he should stay down in case you want to cuddle again for comfort or if he should mirror you and sit up with you.

“I was supposed to find him a grand present. One that would blow his mind completely. Maybe we’d even find one together and surprise him with something. I don’t know, a fucking car or something."

Aizawa snorts and you scoff out a rather pathetic excuse of a laugh at your own joke before you grab onto Aizawa’s shirt. “Probably not a car… you and Yamada would need equally as big presents and I’d be too broke for that.”

Aizawa decides to sit up with you, if the pull on the stomach of his shirt is any indication from you of what you might want. He grabs onto your hands and squeezes. “He’d probably ask for something small, like a new couch cover or something. Or a CD even though no one collects them anymore.”

Aizawa nods and agrees, “or socks. He always wore those socks with holes.”

You throw your head back and laugh truthfully, “that’s right, I’d totally forgotten. God they were so disgusting.”

You lean forward so you’re in Aizawa’s space again and he wraps his arms you, inhaling your scent he’s gotten so accustomed to and which brings him great comfort. He doesn’t have the heart to react too emotionally – if he does, he’s not sure he’d be able to contain the information about Kurogiri that he himself obtained not even a year ago. Him and Yamada had chosen to keep quiet about it to any of Shirakumo’s relatives and loved ones and as much as it pained him to keep it from you as well, the hole Shirakumo’d left in your chest still had a long way to go for healing. He’s confirmed in those thoughts when you start sobbing uncontrollably again, muttering out a muffled, “it should’ve been me.”

Aizawa tightens his grip almost aggressively and firmly denies that. You shake your head, “but he had so much to offer. He was so bright, Shou. He should’ve been here.” The last part is yelled out and while Aizawa’s logical mind has half a mind to mentally apologize to your neighbors, his emotional mind is screaming out in agony at your words. He knows you’re not saying them to hurt him or with any malice, but they sting, nonetheless.

He starts rocking you back and forth in his arms, cooing and kissing you as he desperately fights back tears. A few gets loose and down onto you.

You’re starting to calm down and Aizawa has succeeded in moving you to the bed. You’re cuddled up to him as you croak out a weak, “I miss him”, hiccupping as you go. Aizawa just replies with a “me too” every time, desperate to wrap up some of your pain and take it from you. He thought you were asleep 12 minutes ago but another thought of Shirakumo had made you sob out again. You’d leant up to kiss Aizawa then, which had triggered the response.

Shirakumo was very much and very obviously in love with you – and you’d been just as painfully in love with him. None of you had ever acted on your emotions but it’d been clear from the first day you met that you’d somehow end up in a Happily-Ever-After kind of situation. Shirakumo had often whispered to Aizawa and Yamada about confessing when his hero career was secure and he’d have something worthwhile to offer you while they’d both tried to encourage him to confess while they were in high school.

But it should never come to pass. The very same week that Shirakumo left the earth he’d started mumbling about confessing after his work studies. Yamada had hyped him up and Aizawa knew that you were going with similar thoughts.

Aizawa clears his throat to stop a sob from escaping and gently, your fingers trace his cheek, cooing back at him as he did to you. With a hoarse voice you’d let out, “it’s going to be okay, Shou. We have each other.”

He nods and this time he’s the one to hide his face in your neck. You coo and let your fingers run through his hair with meaningful whispers returned to him. He calms down faster than you did and kisses you. You kiss him back, “tomorrow we’ll go to the grave before we visit his Mom, right?” you confirm and Aizawa nods while he lets you move stray hairs behind his ear, “good. I’m glad we’re all going this year. She’ll be happy to see you and 'Zashi too.”

He knows she will. She often chastises them both for not coming around as often as you do and makes lots of leftover food they can take home in nicely wrapped Tupperware so they have proper food for their demanding jobs.

You cuddle close to Aizawa and knows you’ve exhausted yourself enough to fall asleep. You seem calm and collected but he knows your body is mostly just tired.

One last time he kisses the top of your head before he mumbles out a goodnight. Tomorrow might not be brighter than today and the loss may feel even greater than it has in years, but so long as he has your hand to hold, he can face tomorrow and support you in his friend's stead.

Why did I choose May to be the phone? I wanted to create an objectsona that could be my author avatar. I thought about which object suits me best and came to the conclusion that either a phone, a tablet, or something fluffy (like a keychain, for example) suits me best. So I chose the phone. She looks a little like Alcatel, since this brand was my very first smartphone, and also looks a little like Samsung and iPhone, I don’t know why I wanted it that way. I named her May so that I wouldn't have another character named Mary like my name. (But the name May is related to the name Mary)

On September 12, 2023, the most significant U.S. technology antitrust trial in decades opened in a Washington, D.C. federal district court. In U.S. v. Google, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and 38 state and territory attorneys general allege that Google has violated Section 2 of the Sherman Act, an antitrust law originally enacted in 1890.

The Sherman Act prohibits using exclusionary practices to maintain a monopoly. The DOJ and state attorneys general assert that Google has done just that in relation to certain internet search services. As often occurs, the case was narrowed in the months leading up to the start of the trial. Here is an overview of some of the key questions being addressed at the trial, which is expected to last several months.

Are Google’s browser agreements exclusive?

Google has entered into browser agreements with Apple and Mozilla under which Google is the default search engine for web browsers provided by those companies. For example, with respect to Apple, this means that a person who purchases a new iPhone, launches the Safari web browser, and enters a query into the search bar will, by default, receive search results from Google. In return for making Google the default search engine, the web browser providers receive a portion of advertising revenue arising from those searches.

A key question is whether these agreements are exclusive. Google asserts that they are not, arguing that the default settings can easily be changed by consumers who wish to use a non-Google search engine. The DOJ responds, “Even where search users might want to switch defaults, the effort and knowledge required to make that change biases them towards sticking with the default option.”

In an August 2023 ruling regarding summary judgement motions, Judge Amit Mehta wrote that “It is best to await a trial to determine whether, as a matter of actual market reality, Google’s position as the default search engine across multiple browsers is a form of exclusionary conduct.” In making this inquiry, the court will consider not only whether the browser agreements are actually exclusive, but also whether they are de facto exclusive. An agreement that lacks a formal exclusivity provision can nonetheless function in a de facto exclusive manner due to contextual factors, such as market dynamics and incentives.

A related question is whether any exclusivity associated with the browser agreements is simply the result of market competition. Google argues that it won the competition to be the default search engine for browsers made by Apple and Mozilla “on the merits as established and judged by its customers, not through anticompetitive or exclusionary conduct.” The DOJ counters this by stating that the “existence of multiple bidders does not transform an anticompetitive agreement into a permissible one.”

Are Google’s agreements regarding Android devices exclusive?

Android is the world’s most widely used mobile operating system, with a global market share as of December 2022 of about 72%, versus 27% for iOS. In the United States, the Android market share as of December 2022 was about 44%, compared with about 56% for iOS. Google has agreements with Samsung and other mobile device manufacturers of Android-based phones to make Google the default search engine on those devices. Google also has similar agreements with cellular wireless network providers that sell Android phones.

In relation to the Android antitrust question, Google enters into two types of agreements: Mobile Application Distribution Agreements (MADAs) and Revenue Share Agreements (RSAs). A MADA is a nonexclusive agreement allowing an Android device maker to preinstall a set of Google apps, including Google search and the Chrome browser. Since a MADA is nonexclusive, it permits a device maker to also preinstall non-Google search apps. RSAs introduce an additional wrinkle: Device makers and wireless carriers that enter into an RSA must make Google the exclusive, preinstalled search app on the device, and are thus prohibited from preinstalling any competing search app.

The revenue share that accompanies an RSA creates a strong economic incentive. And, because an RSA is only available to device makers that also have signed a MADA, the plaintiffs argue that this linkage has the effect of turning MADA into an exclusive contract. Google responds by underscoring that MADAs are nonexclusive and that device makers and wireless carriers are free to choose—or decline—to enter into the exclusive relationship that accompanies signing an RSA.

If the agreements are exclusive, how much of the market do they foreclose?

A finding that the Google browser and/or Android agreements are actually or de facto exclusive would not necessarily mean Google is violating antitrust laws. As the D.C. Circuit (which sets precedent for the district court hearing U.S. v. Google) explained in a 2001 decision, “Permitting an antitrust action to proceed any time a firm enters into an exclusive deal would both discourage a presumptively legitimate business practice and encourage costly antitrust actions. Because an exclusive deal affecting a small fraction of a market clearly cannot have the requisite harmful effect upon competition, the requirement of a significant degree of foreclosure serves a useful screening function.”

A key question that the U.S. v. Google trial will therefore explore is: To the extent that the browser and/or Android agreements are exclusive, is the resulting market foreclosure “substantial”? Unsurprisingly, the parties disagree, with the DOJ asserting that the answer is yes and Google asserting the opposite. The parties also disagree on the methodology that should be used in obtaining the answer.

What is the relevant market?

Examining alleged anticompetitive behavior requires identifying the relevant market. With respect to internet users (as distinct from advertisers), the DOJ argues that “general search services” is the relevant market and that offerings in that market include Google search and Bing. Notably, the DOJ specifically excludes from this category “specialized search services or other websites that are limited to specific topics, such as discounted hotels or airline fares,” writing that “Yelp can find you a pizzeria but is no help when it comes to the symptoms of strep throat.”

Google asserts that the relevant market for search is broader, arguing that “by defining the relevant market to include only general search engines, Plaintiffs distort the commercial reality that users routinely substitute other search providers for general search engines—such as Amazon when they shop, or Expedia when they travel—and thereby improperly exclude many of Google’s strongest competitors from the relevant market.” Thus, the trial will explore the competing narratives regarding the definition of the relevant market for internet search and, separately, for search advertising.

A landmark antitrust trial

In addition to the above, the court will also consider an allegation by the state and territory attorneys general (but not the United States) that a Google marketing tool called Search Ads 360 is used in anticompetitive ways in relation to advertising. But the specifics of the questions to be addressed at trial aside, U.S. v Google has enormous implications for the technology sector. It is the first major U.S. trial to examine antitrust in the context of the contemporary Big Tech landscape.

The ruling from the current district court trial will not be the last word, as the non-prevailing party will almost certainly appeal to the D.C. Circuit. And regardless of the eventual outcome, there will be calls for change. A Google victory would lead to assertions that the technology ecosystem has outpaced antitrust law. And a DOJ victory would lead to assertions that antitrust law is being applied and interpreted far too broadly.

GameSir X2 Bluetooth Controller Review (and opinions on other controllers)

It's taken me over half a year to write this. Back in December 2022, I wrote about the 8BitDo Pro 2 Controller and how I loved using it to play games on my PC and my phone. Since then I've also used it on my relatives' Nintendo Switches at family events; it works as advertised, but it's a bit hard to play Mario Kart with it honestly. I swear it used to be easier to play Mario Kart on older consoles.

As I used the 8BitDo Pro 2 on my phone with the phone clip, I gradually understood why people thought it was top-heavy. Also, although I did have the muscle memory to play Warriors games with it, I wanted a telescopic controller because I didn't want to have my phone weighing down the controller. Because literally no telescopic controller uses the PlayStation analog stick layout (seriously, even the Backbone One PlayStation Edition uses the Xbox layout ffs), I decided to suck it up and buy something that was good yet I didn't want to spend so much money on.

I did consider the Flydigi Wee2t but apparently the ribbon cable used to connect the two halves is cheap and prone to failing from repeated use and the work required to DIY repair it is hard because I'm a person who strives for easy results. Hence I decided on the GameSir X2, a reliable and reputable telescopic controller that I could get used for cheap and sell it for a profit if I didn't like it. Unexpectedly though, I actually quite like the GameSir X2 for playing games on my phone. Thanks to it, the 8BitDo Pro 2 has been delegated to being a PC controller and it's still very useful for that purpose.

The controller connects to the phone via Bluetooth and is compatible with both iPhones and Androids; there are also Lightning and USB-C (with Switch button configuration) variants that support passthrough charging. Your phone needs to sit flush in the controller for the best experience; with my old phone (Samsung Galaxy A70), I had to take it out of the case because it had a kickstand, but when I got a new phone (Samsung Galaxy S23+), I made sure to get a case that was flat so I wouldn't need to take it out of the case. The controller has three modes, one for Android, one for iOS and one for the G-Touch mode, which connects to the GameSir app so it can act as a touch emulator through keymapping.

GameSir says that the controller doesn't support PC, but you can connect it to a PC using a USB-C cable or Bluetooth and use it as an Xbox controller. Together with the 8BitDo Pro 2, I've got a pretty good two-player setup that would have been good when my friends and I still cared about each other when we had time to care.

The controller also came with concave or convex stick covers; the sticks can be used without the covers, but they will be a bit smaller compared to having the covers on them. The covers fit quite snugly, but something to be mindful of is that they are known to come off quite easily without you knowing it. I've had numerous times where I thought I lost a stick cover only to conveniently find it nearby. GameSir do sell stick covers, but they don't sell the same kinds of stick covers they include with every X2 controller. There is no reason why they don't have spares they can sell separately because it doesn't take that much to make them.

The X2 Bluetooth originally costed nearly $100 new. I found an eBay auction listing for a used one (albeit interstate) at under $20 - with all the people putting in bids towards the end, I ended up $39 for it plus $13 postage, which was still cheaper than buying it new (even with the price drops over the past 18 months). The only reason why I won was because I used eBay's automatic bidding and set it up to $100 max bid. It was an absolute steal and a good choice on my part in case I paid too much for something I didn't end up liking.

Other similar models include the X2 Pro with a free month of Xbox GamePass Ultimate, the X2S with a changeable hair trigger/analog trigger mode and the G8 which styles itself more like an actual controller and adds an audio jack. All three models have a USB-C connection with Hall effect triggers and/or sticks (not on the X2 Pro). Speaking of the G8, the joysticks are replaceable with different variants and they aren't just stick covers.

So with how I've moved from a normal controller (with a phone clip) to a telescopic controller, a question arises as to whether I'll move on to buying a dedicated gaming handheld. The effort of fitting my phone into the controller can get a bit tedious, not to mention all the drama that's been happening in emulation on Android, particularly with Yuzu/Citra and AetherSX2 being removed from the Play Store, plus recent phone updates making it more difficult to sync my PS2 saves between my phone and computer. Plus, in all honesty, I have better things to do on my phone at the moment and I'm already taking two phones (and a laptop) into work every day, so I'm not interested in going to the effort of buying a handheld console or PC. At least I have a controller I can take to play emulated games with my phone on trips and holidays.

Pixels and Photography

I think I should document some of 2023 over here, and potentially 2022 as well?

Back when I was younger, I would feel sad that I didn't have a good phone and camera or the means to travel often like my friends and peers. My family barely scraped by while my classmates were all relatively wealthy, so growing up in that environment was a bit of a challenge. I know my parents prioritized living in a good area to give me and my sibling the best educations, but it's difficult to fit in when everyone has the newest or highest quality belongings and you're stuck with hand-me downs or substitutes. I tried to be grateful for what I had and think I was fine in high school, but my college years were during the peak of Instagram where everyone was sharing their expensive vacations, meals, and possessions. I I slowly realized the glaring disparity between my and my acquaintances' lives, as well as how sheltered I was. I had no idea that some of my classmates were so wealthy and looking back, I kind of wish I never did?

Admittedly, social media did teach me quite a bit, especially in regards to food, fashion, makeup, psychology, etiquette, and social issues. Social media is a cool way to connect and learn from others, but it's a double edged sword. So many people developed depression and other mental health issues due to being constantly linked and compared to others. I'm pretty grateful that I grew up as people were transitioning into the mainstream usage of technology instead of being born into it. Growing up with social media sounds like a recipe for disaster in regards to mental health and self-image.

As a college student, I would be desperate to take nice pictures of food and nature and share them to social media, but nothing would ever turn out the way I intended. It's definitely because the phones I had were very basic since that's all my family could afford. Once I got my first industry job, I bought a Pixel 3 and it was the first "nice" smartphone I owned, on par with Apple and Samsung phones in terms of photography and processing power. In October 2019 I went to go visit family in London for my first solo trip and took so many pictures!! I still look back on that month's album because the photos I took of the architecture, nature, and food are all gorgeous. I received so many compliments on my photography skills on Instagram- I felt like I could finally carry out my visions with that phone. :'D

The Pixel phones are fantastic for taking pictures of food, plants, and scenery while costing a fraction of the price as iPhones and Samsung Galaxies. I've since moved onto a Pixel 6, and the picture quality is still great. I'm shy about taking selfies and never really got into the habit- to be honest, I think there must be some selfie settings on my phone that I have not figured out how to use properly. My selfies always turn out a bit strange looking- I imagine it's because of the camera? On Tiktok, some of the face filters also don't work properly on the Pixel so I think those two things are related. I do like my selfies more on Galaxies and iPhones, but since I don't normally take them, I think it's fine to just stick with my Pixel.

Anyways, it's funny that I would get sad over all this when I was a student and try to take better photos to share, but now that I actually take good photos, I barely share them!! I think we all got tired of social media once the pandemic hit, and things have never really been the same since. But I figured that since I have the photo quality I desire now, and get many compliments on my shots still, it may be worth it to finally share them on here. I'm looking forward to it!!
