I'm yours
Ishan is a hopeless romantic. In the sense that his romantic interests never let him hope.
The most recent person that he has been head over heels for is going to give a seminar in their college and he's Ishan's favourite.
Ishan is the head of the Cultural and Intellectual Committee and as such, he's in charge of almost all the extracurricular events that take place in the college. He's always had such bloody issues with 90% of the guests and speakers for being unprepared or late that these days he just assumes that the guests will be late, but hopefully not too late.
Which, brings him back to his current romantic interest— Shubhman Gill.
The man has been guest speaker in their college twice by now, third time monday, and he has never disappointed Ishan. He's always on time, he's always perfectly dressed, and he always emails Ishan his speech and let's Ishan point out details that he would humbly request to add or remove. Ishan could have kissed him for being a half decent human being the very first time he did that.
Plus, the college being the Techno faculty, the super famous technological prodigy of India coming as a guest speaker, Shubhman sometimes gets assaulted with too many questions and people and sometimes with no good interactive audience at all and yet, he smiles and talks to the teachers afterwards.
The first time Shubhman talked to him, Ishan had been putting away the gifts Shubhman received so that the man could take them on his bike without damaging the Tulsi plant.
(And that was another thing. A famous and important personality coming on his fucking bike? Ishan drooled a little bit when he heard Shubhman softly ask Ritika ma'am for a place to keep his helmet at.)
"Thank you for inviting me," Shubhman told him in a bashful way, an embarrassed blush on his cheeks.
Inexplicably, Ishan wanted to bite those cheeks. He held himself in chem and smiled back,"Thank you for coming, Mr. Gill. You've been a pleasure to work with."
"Please, it's Shubhman! And honestly, I had fun coming here as well. I hear you're the organiser of the event; it's amazingly done, I must say. Your management is impeccable."
So what if Ishan let the praise get to his head? So what if he stalked Shubhman on Instagram later? They had exchanged numbers—for future seminars, Shubhman had explained, much to Ishan's misfortune— and Ishan was entitled to be a little over his head for once!
The second time they talked, was when Ishan congratulated Shubhman on his award as the leading influencer of social media. The third time was when Shubhman wished Ishan on his birthday. The fourth was when Ishan had to invite Shubhman for ALASKA organisation's collab with their college and his presence as a guest judge.
Shubhman had sought him out again.
"I had a lot of fun," he said with that damnable smile of his,"thank you for inviting me again, Ishan."
Ishan shook his head,"Thank you for coming, man. Honestly, your way of interaction makes learning more interesting for the students. And, well, throws me some points to become the favourite teacher of the year."
Shubhman laughed, a sound that Ishan wanted to get drunk on for the rest of his goddamn life. "You have those competitions?"
Ishan looked around dramatically and leaned towards Shubhman, as of telling a secret. Shubhman, that perfect man, leaned forward as well, looking completely serious about this so called secret.
Ishan reached on his tip toes to whisper,"The students do that in their classes on Teachers' day. If they do it publically, they have to give the best teacher paper crown to teachers senior than me. So, a private award for me to take."
Somewhere in the background, something huge fell and Ishan startled badly enough to almost stumble but Shubhman caught him by the arm and grinned,"Cheers to the best teacher, then. What's the other activities you planned amazingly?"
And that's how Shubhman had ended up getting VIP passes to see the Darshan Raval concert that had been arranged.
Virat bhaiya had raised an eyebrow at Ishan showing Shubhman around the campus while they prepared for the concert lightings and all, but hadn't said anything. Ishan was so thankful.
They haven't talked in the four months after Ishan wished Shubhman a happy birthday.
____________________________________________________
So, in short, Ishan is a hopeless romantic. He turns every little gesture into a gesture of love and he has many one sided love stories that live rent free in his head.
He would have romantisized this as well, to be honest, if he wasn't confused as fuck.
He's been home for all of five minutes after a damn long day— it's exam season— and all he wants to do is flop on his bed and sleep for the next four weeks. A text pops up on his phone, from an unknown number.
'Are you tired, love? Anything I can do to help?'
Ishan frowns. None of his friends changed their numbers recently and moreover, none of them use nicknames. Can't be a student, no student of his would dare disrespect him. He may be lenient most of the time, but he's tempered enough to break their audacity on the very first lecture.
'Who is this?'
The reply came instantly. 'Your admirer? Your worshipper? Your fan?' a second passed as Ishan gawked at the message. Another message dropped. 'Whatever I am, I'm yours.'
Well, damn. Someone's smooth.
'Thank you for your kind words, but I prefer not to own people. It's illegal yk?' Ishan feels like an idiot as soon as he sends the text but he can't do anything because it's seen immediately. The person on the other side must be bloody stuck to their chat.
They send a few laughing emojis. 'I could turn the world around for you to be mine, though.'
Goddamn.
Ishan leaves the message on seen as he types the unknown number on Truecaller, but there's no registered name under the number.
He's about to leave and go freshen up when another message pops up.
'Searching for me on Truecaller will result to nothing, love.'
Ishan leaves the message on delivered as he looks around himself, his big house feeling emptier by the second. He blocks the number, somehow feeling a weird mix of anticipation and trepidation. He takes a fortifying breath and nods to himself, throwing his phone on the dinning table on his way to his bed room.
He tries to get the message out of his head as he looks for another YouTube video to see while eating his dinner.
'Do you know that blocking someone in the middle of the conversation is rude, Ishan?' the pop up message reads.
'Fuck off.'
____________________________________________________
There's a swarm of notifications going off and that's how Ishan wakes up at the ungodly hour of 2:34 am.
He blindly reaches for his phone, the brightness will kill him he's sure, but somehow manages to read the notifications with squinted eyes.
It's an annual Spotify subscription? What the fuck?
He scrambles to sit up and turns on the lamp, trying to focus more. The bloody notifications are an absolute onslaught to his ears. He even has an email announcing his annual Spotify premium account but there's no SMS of deduction from his account. What even—
Before he can start to plan a schedule to go to the bank tomorrow and also somehow plan a call to the customer service of Spotify, another message from that unknown number pops up.
'Happy belated Birthday, Ishan. Sorry I couldn't get you any actual gifts this time, I'll do better next time.'
Next bloody time?
'There won't be a bloody next time. Don't interfere in my life again. And cancel this bloody premium, i don't need it.'
And he lies.
He does need the premium for when he pulls all nighters and for when he drives to and fro to college. He needs it because he needs someone to talk and listen when he wants to be awake and podcasts are the only way that happens lately when he's off work.
Yes, he has a horrid social life— as a professor often does. All his friends are his colleagues. His family usually knows that he pulls insane hours and they only call at weekends.
'Don't reject it, pls' the message comes, as Ishan ponders his lonely life. When was the last time he enjoyed his life thoroughly? Another message pops up. 'Look, I just want to do something nice for you, okay? Leave it be, it's not your money thats costing you and I've got plenty of money to spend on my dear ones, with god's grace.'
Ishan doesn't know what to reply and he is incensed at himself for it. What the fuck? Ishan has never been greedy or wanted what he couldn't have. This random person suddenly gifts him a Spotify premium, Ishan contemplates his life and he hesitates in doing the right thing?
'Pls Ishan?'
Oh god, he can hear the puppy eyes. He turns off his internet and throws the phone on the bed. Somehow, Ishan manages to sleep.
____________________________________________________
The next morning, it's thankfully Saturday. His Saturdays go great almost always.
His hand itches to listen to his Spotify playlist he's made specifically for travel, but he doesn't want to use a stranger's gift. The stranger might know him and do it out of good of his heart or whatever, but Ishan, in all good conscience cannot use someone for their money.
As he absentmindedly drinks his evening tea, Ishan contemplates any tasks he has for the next day— grocery shopping, getting a haircut, finding a plumber to fix that minor leakage in his kitchen tap. It's gonna be a long day.
"Ishan!" He blinks up like a deer in highlights as he's startled by Rohit bhaiya. "What are you thinking?"
"Kuch nahi, bhaiya," he says and grins when Rohit bhaiya puts his hand on his shoulder. Ishan has always been a fan of skinship, and while Virat bhaiya being touchy is normal and comforting, Rohit bhaiya being touchy is rewarding and privileged. "Aap batao, how was your day?"
He groans in reply,"Puchh mat, Bhai. These B.Com students look innocent but they're so not! Apparently some kids sold around a paper of Accounts saying it's a leaked paper but it wasn't and making it clear to the students as well the board members? Hell. Why did I even accept to be the Secretary there when I'm Dean here too?"
Ishan laughs,"Because you love Virat bhaiya and lost a bet?"
"Shh, don't speak about it where students can hear you!"
Ishan laughs again. Feeling happy is a natural state of his when he's around his colleagues, they're all so good to him. It's what makes him stay in the college despite him getting offers from a lot of colleges in bigger cities. He's never gonna get the same affection anywhere else and he's ready to face some separation with his family while he works here. He's already made it clear that they're gonna come love with after his father finally retires.
"Accha, tell me what is the status of overmorrow's seminar?"
The one where his celebrity crush is going to be the main speaker?
"Spectacular. I've done everything, bas I'll get the flowers and the gift watch and everything else is set. Bhaiya bas Monday ko maachis dhundhni na pade, haa?"
It happens almost every damn time. It'd be ten minutes from arrival time of the guest and Ishan would tell some student to get the matchsticks for the auspicious diya lighting and no one would find the matchsticks. With everyone else, it's fine, but Shubhman? He's a punctual man, running around like headless chicken in front of him is not how he wants to establish himself and his students.
Rohit bhaiya nods understandingly. "Pakka. Varna ye apna hai na vo, usse lighter le ke candle light karke de Dena."
Ishan shakes his head at the confusing slang Rohit bhaiya uses. Amar, one of his students, has a smoking habit and hence carries around a lighter. The idiot always saves himself by offering his lighter at times when lighting something was necessary.
"Thik. Anyways, I'm going home, bhaiya. Anything left for me to do?"
Rohit bhaiya shakes his head with a grin and lets him go.
Its almost reflex when Ishan puts his earphones in and starts Chhaiya Chhaiya.
The bloody quality makes him blink and straighten up. And oh. Yeah, he's using premium.
Even as he feels a little guilty, his head bops to the beat as he drives back home.
____________________________________________________
When Ishan comes back home again, his garden looks different.
He's convinced that it's because he's not inspecting it properly so he crouches down and cranes his neck to look at the grass and some flower plants he has. He can't put his finger on it, but it's different.
He glances around the rest of his garden and that's when it catches his eye— the mower. And the pile of grass beside.
Someone fucking mowed his garden? And somehow, to the exact way he likes it.
And then, he hears the start of a two-wheeler, and before he's even out of the gate, the person has turned the corner and all Ishan can see is the shade of their taillight on the trees.
Ishan hightails it inside his house and checks it all over.
No lock broken, no thing stolen and no money moved. Everything is as it was when he left in the morning.
His phone pings with another message.
'Sorry to leave like that, ik it was obnoxious'
'how'd you like your garden tho? Did I do well?'
And. Ishan is a weak man, okay?
He knows this is wrong, he knows he has a stalker probably, and someone with probably deep issues, but. He bloody can't accept such big help without saying anything in gratitude, okay? He's weak.
'Its fine, tho I'd like to meet you someday' what the fuck is he saying. He wants to meet a probable sociopath?
'And thanks for the garden. You've done it perfectly and it's a great help. Thank you' there. He's been polite.
Another message comes. 'I think you'll enjoy our meeting a lot, love. And your welcome'
No other messages pop up throughout the evening.
Ishan denies to even himself that he checks his phone every five minutes for the stranger.
He's intrigued, he says to himself when he goes to sleep.

The default politician is a normal white guy
Close your eyes and think ‘politician’. I bet you think of a white guy—probably in his 40s or 50s, and with a simple first name, something like John, Rob, Steve, or Chris. It can be less common, but nothing that people will mispronounce, or worse yet be corrected about the pronunciation of. And he just looks normal. Clean-cut, short hair, suit and tie. They make these guys in a lab.
I’m not saying this is how it should be in an ideal world. That’s just how it is. The further you stray from the default template, the more you have to justify yourself, the more you have to compensate. It’s not impossible to get elected as something else, but if there’s nothing remarkable about you, people are just going to lean toward just electing the normal white guy instead. The electorate has a huge normal-white-guy bias. In mainstream, national politics that is.
For example, if you’re a gay dude, then you better be the best goddamn gay around. A model gay. The kind of person we can’t tell is gay at first, and doesn’t weird anyone out. In the US right now, the go-to example of that has become Pete Buttigieg. He even has a simple-enough first name. Pete. His surname is a little stupid, and people can’t figure out how to pronounce it just by looking. It’s like, boot-a-jedge? It’s a good strategy that he emphasizes his first name with that ‘Mayor Pete’ nickname. But is this guy exceptionally great? No. He’s kind of just a normal guy, but worse, because he’s gay. It’s a downgrade.
If you’re black, you have a very high bar to get over. You have to be very wholesome and family-oriented. Nothing scary. No rap music or Islam. Be a Christian. Don’t cheat on your wife, or have children with multiple women. The day a black dude tries to run for president with kids from multiple women, the media will call them ‘baby mommas’ at every opportunity, everybody will pretend they’re not being racist, and suddenly the public will remember they care about family values again.
It’s also better if your wife is a black woman. Americans are more comfortable with black people when they’re in same-race relationships, because that prevents any kind of weirdness. I think black voters like it better too, actually. If you wanted to sell an interracial couple to the American public, it should probably be a white man with a woman who’s not East Asian. A black or Middle Eastern woman would probably do.
Barack Obama walked the line. He was highly educated, a great speaker, he had experience in state and federal politics, he had a good home life with a normal marriage to a black woman, two kids and a dog. His worst quality was probably his name, which people did try to use against him, but at least it wasn’t something hard to pronounce. His middle name just sounded sort of like that terrorist guy, which wasn’t enough. And his first name, Barack, is uncommon, but also relatively simple, and it actually has a good ring to it. Barack Obama. It rolls of the tongue well.
To be a woman is also a difficult balancing act. We’ve seen successful female politicians in other countries. To make it big-time, they have to be tough enough to be taken seriously, but communicate in a soft enough way they don’t get called a shrill bitch, and they can’t be too sexy or emotional. They have to be a ruthless grandmother of the nation. Angela Merkel (Germany), Margaret Thatcher (UK), and Indira Gandhi (India) are some good examples of this.
If she’s too attractive, that actually works against her, because men won’t take a woman seriously as an authority figure if they also want to bang her. They’ll just say she’s hot and they want to sleep with her, but this is intended as a way of being belittling or demeaning. We’ve seen this over and over again with politicians like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, for example. If you ask people what they think of her, people answer by talking about her appearance, instead of their thoughts about her as a serious politician, and the signal is they don’t think of her as a serious politician.
There are sometimes young women who end up as heads of government in other countries, but usually ones that are especially forward-thinking compared with America, and who have a governmental system where the leader is less emphasized in elections. Jacinda Ardern, the PM of New Zealand, for example, was not directly voted in, and I doubt a woman like her could’ve been successful in American politics, at least without totally changing her approach.
Hillary Clinton was a highly competent woman who’d proved herself many times over and captured that ‘tough grandmother’ energy reasonably well. There are few women in America who had as much potential to become the first female president. It took a lot of effort and resources to keep her down, especially in lies and conspiracy theories in the right-wing media circus that focused on her, and managed to trick enough people into thinking she did something wrong in Benghazi, and then had an email server, and maybe was orchestrating a pedophile sex-cult out of a pizzeria? Despite all that, she got more votes than her opponent and almost got elected, because in most ways she did fit the role well.
Kamala Harris
Now let’s talk about Harris. She’s part-Indian, part-African American, part white, so she’s only like a quarter black or something. Does that matter? No, obviously it shouldn’t—but people talked about it during election season. It was a topic of conversation. That’s a downside of being non-white, sadly. This topic doesn’t do anything productive, and of course nobody wastes any time talking about a white guy’s race. Does anyone care what country Tim Walz’s parents came from? Is he Irish? Is one of his parents from Denmark? I don’t know, or care, and I doubt anyone else does either.
But what people really dislike is ambiguity. If you’re black, then you need to clearly be black and lean into being black and make that part of your story. If you’re Indian, then likewise. There are, in fact, people who didn’t realize Harris was black until the 2024 race. And even after this became a conversation, Harris just tried to avoid the topic entirely. She was asked about it in an interview, and she just called talking about her race a tired talking point, and asked to move to the next question. In my view, this shows her poor understanding of the American electorate. She needed to tell her story. Tell us where your parents came from, talk about your past.
For many people, the lack of clear backstory, and the appearance of a changing backstory, contributed to the perception that she was inauthentic. There were people who criticized her for claiming to be black despite only being a quarter black and not having “the black experience” (there were black people who believed and argued this).
I saw many Harris supporters make the mistake of insisting on the pronunciation of her name, making that into a bigger deal than it ever should’ve been. “It’s not kuh-malla, it’s comma-luh”. Terrible. Way to shoot yourselves in the foot. If I could’ve given everybody advice: just say Harris. It’s the better part of her name, and there’s no reason not to use it. If I were on her staff, any time I could just be saying ‘Harris’ instead, I’d do that and just skip the Kamala part; and then when people do say Kamala, let them pronounce it however they want. Who cares?
What did Harris have to compensate for these disadvantages?
Unfortunately, Harris does not at all have tough grandma vibes. Is she too young? Maybe it’s about how she talks. People don’t like how she sounds, or how she laughs. Either way, she doesn’t have the right vibe. She feels more like a classmate at college than a wise no-nonsense grandma.
What’s her experience like? Senator from California, then Vice President. That’s reasonable, you say. But right now, California has a bad reputation nationally. Not a bad reputation it deserves, but one that it got because people see news reports about how there are homeless people shitting on the streets in San Francisco. Line-ups of homeless tents! And oh, the crime! We’ve all seen those videos on the internet of people looting stores and nobody stopping them, right?
There was a referendum (prop 47 in 2024) to reclassify petty theft at some point and the people of the state voted in favour of it, which didn’t work out, which is why now they’ve passed another referendum (prop 36 in 2024) reversing some of that change. So despite California being the wealthiest state with a really high quality of living where people all across the country would be happy to move to if they could afford it, a lot of people across America hear ‘government of California’ and think bad thoughts. (This will be a hurdle for Gavin Newsom if he tries to break into national politics—they’ll just talk about California’s problems constantly, and the narrative will be California bad, therefore Newsom bad.)
Before being a Senator, Harris was an Attorney General. What does that even mean? She was in charge of laws being enforced in California? That’s bad, because in California they have bad laws and people do bad things and they get away with it because California is bad. So that’s all just bad.
Then she was the Vice President for 4 years. That must be valuable experience, right? Unfortunately, the way a lot of people reason is “if my life is going well, I support the current leadership, and if my life feels like it’s going poorly, then I don’t support the current leadership”. Is it their fault? Were there things they could’ve done but didn’t? It doesn’t matter. The reasoning doesn’t run that deep. Lots of Americans thought the economy felt bad, so they don’t like the current leadership, and Harris is the current leadership, therefore she’s bad and that political experience amounts to nothing, or less than nothing. They would’ve preferred Harris in an alternate timeline where she was never VP to the Harris in our timeline where she was. It tainted her.
Is the economy actually doing worse? I don’t even know. There’s indicators to suggest it’s not, but people will say they feel the economy is doing bad no matter what the numbers say. It’s actually largely psychological, not mathematical. There are various biases and ideas that go into how well people think the economy is doing, and part of it is messaging. If every day you turn on TV and the people on air tell you “the economy is bad”, then you’re just going to end up feeling like the economy is bad, regardless of your personal experiences with it. A similar thing happens with crime rates.
There was that whole “border czar” lie that Harris’s campaign didn’t do enough to contradict. And the border is another feels-based topic, where virtually nobody has any idea what the border is like—most people in the country are nowhere near it and don’t interact with it, so what do they know? Whatever the press shows them, is the answer. But somehow, everybody ended up feeling like the border is a big problem right now—and if things are bad, then your current leaders must be to blame. And there was an article a few years ago where some journalist called Harris the border czar, which must mean the border is her fault, maybe? It’s brilliant, in an evil sort of way.
(Harris was tasked with diplomatic missions related to immigration, which were arguably successful. It was never her job to directly do anything about the border. That whole narrative was just made up by the right-wing media.)
So experience and personality weren’t in her favour. What was?
Nothing, really. Everything I know about her cast her in a negative light in the public’s eye. And that doesn’t mean she would’ve been a bad executive. She probably would’ve been the best president the US has had in some time. But she’s a woman, she’s black or something, she talks weird, she has a weird name that people mispronounce. That’s a lot to compensate for. For somebody like her to get in, she’d have needed to be exceptionally great, and she wasn’t.
Joe Biden
Now look at Joe Biden. He was a great candidate, both on paper and in practice—well, before he became President, at least.
First of all, he’s a normal white guy with a simple name. He fits the model. There’s nothing to compensate for. His name is Joe. It’s literally the name that we use to mean a simple everyday guy. He’s just an ordinary Joe. Joe Sixpack. Joe Shmoe.
Then you look at him, and yeah, there’s really nothing weird about him at all. He’s perfectly fucking normal. He’s from a working class area, then he worked in government for a long time, and everybody who’s worked with or around him speaks positively of him, including his opponents. People liked him as VP. He’s seriously great. The fact he’s had such a difficult time speaking in the last few years is pretty much his only downside.
In every respect other than being younger, the move from Joe to Kamala was one of the worst downgrades of all time.
That’s what I thought, anyway. At the time, many people seemed to be happy with the change-up, but only because they were happy to feel they had ‘solved’ the Joe Biden problem.
That’s why Tim Walz was important. He distracted everybody from Harris. Tim was like the new Joe: a normal, friendly, white guy with a simple name. Tim. He’s Tim. He was a high school football coach, for cryin’ out loud. And he had political experience. The vibes were immaculate. He’s all the things Harris lacked, but which people were too uncomfortable to acknowledge Harris lacked, because people don’t usually speak as frankly as I’m doing here.
A similar tale: the NDP
In Canada, the two big parties are the Liberal Party and the Conservative Party. In the 1960s, a third party called the New Democratic Party (NDP) was founded. Under the leadership of Jack Layton, a normal white guy with a simple name, it actually grew a lot in the early 2000s, culminating in the 2011 general election, where they took seats from the Liberals and the Bloc Québécois, another smaller party. It was their best performance ever, and the Liberal Party’s worst performance ever, and the NDP went from 4th to the 2nd largest party in the country, after the Conservatives. Layton was seated as the Official Opposition. This was a huge moment for them, and for Canadian politics in general.
Jack Layton had some of the same energy and appeal as Bernie Sanders, in that he was an old white guy who came off as principled, authentic, and caring. But he was also an effective politician, genuinely trying to expand and grow the party. He was normal, he was a good speaker, he went on the streets and talked with people. He didn’t do anything stupid or controversial. Even relatively apolitical people in my life knew about him and had a good impression of him.
Then tragically, he died. The year before the election, in 2010, he had cancer, but he seemed to recover. He became the Opposition Leader in May 2011. In July, he announced that he had another, different type of cancer, and then in August he was pronounced dead. We never found out what type of cancer it was, and it doesn’t matter. As far as politicians go, this man was beloved. Everybody mourned.
Fast-forward to today, and the NPD is back to being 4th largest in the House of Commons. In the 2015 general, the Liberal Party came back stronger than ever under Justin Trudeau’s leadership. They went from 36 seats to a majority with 184 seats. The NPD lost more than half of theirs. And while they tried for a round with Tom Mulcair in between, for the last 7 years now the NPD party leader has been a man named Jagmeet Singh. In my view, this is the reason they no longer stand a chance. The downgrade from Jack Layton to Singh is enormous.
If you just read his name in your head for the first time, you probably mispronounced it. It’s not ‘jag-meet’, it’s ‘jug-meet’. Take some meat, put it in a jug, and then it sings to us. Jug meat sing. That’s his name. It’s a terrible name, almost comically terrible. He’s also a Sikh, which is some foreign religion that most of us know nothing about. He gets on stage with a big beard and turban. I’m sorry, but what do you expect running a leader like this?
Part of the reason a white guy with a simple name is the default in politics is that people want their leaders to represent them, not only in policy but in who they are. I’d say our current and previous PMs, Justin Trudeau and Stephen Harper, both achieved that. If you put them on stage internationally, I’d say they’re both fine reflections of what Canada is as a nation. Sing is not.
Singh isn’t an immigrant. He was born in Ontario. That means he speaks normally, at least. If he were serious about becoming a leader in national politics, he should ditch Sikhism, get a normal haircut, and either convert to Christianity or just say he’s not religious and avoid the topic. He could’ve been successful as a normal Canadian guy, except that his skin is a bit darker because he came from an immigrant background. That can work. In his current state, though? It doesn’t look like he even wants to represent Canada. It doesn’t look like he’s serious about ever actually winning. That or he’s hopelessly naïve about how politics works, and he thinks if he says the right things he’ll somehow overcome all of his own electoral disadvantages. He won’t. I actually doubt he’d win even if he took all of my advice, because there’s probably nothing particularly great about him. If you want to win and you’re not a normal white guy, you need to be a cut above, you need to stand out and be better than average, and I’m sorry, but Singh probably isn’t.
In the United States, I’m skeptical of third parties because I think they’ve ended up having motives other than trying to actually win office. They know they can’t, but run anyway for the impact their run has on the election, trying to spoil the race by ‘taking’ votes from the candidate most similar to you, or just using the platform you get by running for office to expand on your own brand and personality in other ways. It becomes a weird grift, a performance art.
Is that what happened to Singh and the NPD internally? Did they give up on ever actually winning federally and just decide they may as well embrace being the progressive-minded left-leaning minority party that gets to make statements to the press, but never has to actually govern? That’s why they would tolerate being led by Singh, who scores many progressive ‘points’ (look at us, we’re so forward-thinking that we chose a Sikh with a beard and turban as our leader!) and will never win anything.
I don’t know. I’m not privy to internal NPD party politics. It’s just a thought.
By the way, the best politician ever was John Tory, the former mayor of Toronto. That guy is like if space aliens were trying to disguise theirselves as a politician. He's the most normal-looking person ever, and his name is literally John Tory. John Tory! What a name!

King George VI’s speech, with alterations in his own hand, given at a dinner party for the Commonwealth Prime Ministers on 13 October 1948. // © Royal Archives
The events of the Second World War led to a subtle change in relations between the nations of the Empire: there was a much greater feeling of the countries being ‘equal but independent Nations’ than previously. During the war, meetings had been held in London of the Prime Ministers of the Dominions (Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa - and Southern Rhodesia, which had traditionally held a sort of hybrid status between colony and Dominion) and the British Prime Minister to discuss the best way to co-ordinate the war effort. Then in 1948 a conference was held, again in London, this time attended by the Prime Ministers, or their representatives, not only of the old Dominions but also of the new ones of India, Pakistan and Ceylon (Sri Lanka). This conference was arranged to allow the ‘Brotherhood of Nations’ to meet to discuss common problems and issues in the post-war world, and also to introduce the Prime Ministers of the new nations.
The Prime Ministers arrived in London in October and were received by King George VI individually. On 13 October a large dinner was held for them at Buckingham Palace, at which the King made this speech. In it he talked about the ‘high value’ he set on ‘personal contacts between those responsible for guiding our affairs in the different parts of the Commonwealth’. He also said that he would like these meetings to be held from time to time in different Commonwealth capitals. The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting is now held every two years, hosted by a different country of the Commonwealth. Addressing the Prime Ministers, the King pointed out that between them they were charged with the good government of more than five hundred million people, but that indirectly their responsibilities extended to many millions more. The world was looking for peace and it expected the Commonwealth of Nations to play a leading part in that process:
Our Commonwealth has always stood for certain principles, fundamental to the good of Humanity; it has never countenanced injustice, tyranny, or oppression. The self-governing members of the Commonwealth have always embraced peoples of different upbringing, social background and religious belief; they have all had this in common that they were peace-loving democracies in which the ideals of political liberty and personal freedom were jealously and constantly preserved.
King George VI, like many other public speakers, often had his speeches typed out on cards such as these, which he would then read and alter if necessary. There are many such examples in the Royal Archives, and they show that by this date the King, who, as is well known, had suffered from a speech impediment earlier in his life, was able to deliver long speeches with confidence.

She also travelled to support the military community on a USO Tour, visiting six military bases in seven days including Bagram, Afghanistan. In 2018, Meghan married Prince Harry, becoming The Duchess of Sussex.
An accomplished writer, she has contributed pieces to publications in the UK, US, and Ireland, and parlayed that skill into the creation of the successful lifestyle website, ‘The Tig’, where her thoughtful and inspiring op-eds cultivated a global fanbase. The Duchess of Sussex was the first guest editor in the history of British Vogue for their July Issue in 2019, which was the fastest selling copy in the history of the publication. She and Prince Harry founded The Archewell Foundation in 2020 to support communities in need at a micro and macro level, in both moments of crisis as well as for long term aid. At The Archewell Foundation, they hold the value that charitable work should not simply be ‘a handout, but rather a hand held’, a phrase which Meghan first coined when supporting UK charity Smart Works, of which she is patron, that uplifts and prepares underserved women to enter the workforce. Meghan and her husband also founded and oversee production company, Archewell Productions and podcasting arm, Archewell Audio. In 2022, Meghan launched ‘Archetypes’, a record-breaking podcast exploring the labels that try to hold women back; ‘Archetypes’ debuted at Number 1 in The US, UK, Australia, Ireland, and New Zealand, and topped the charts as the Number 1 podcast in 47 countries, demonstrating her unparalleled global reach. She is a NY Times Best Selling author, publishing her highly celebrated children’s book, ‘The Bench’, and “Together: Our Community Kitchen” a publication she spearheaded with the women of the Hubb Community Kitchen in the UK, who were displaced after the tragic Grenfell Fire. True to her character, The Duchess of Sussex mobilized to turn pain into purpose, working alongside this dynamic group of women to help them heal, grow, and develop their own business enterprises in the face of adversity. In addition to topping the NY Times Bestsellers list, “Together,” also debuted as number one on the UK’s Sunday Booklist, with proceeds going to the Kitchen. Meghan’s influence in fashion has been coined “The Meghan Effect” with items selling out within hours of her wearing them. Her ‘effect’ has transcended fashion, shifting cultural conversations as seen with her op-ed for the NY Times “The Losses We Share.” The piece detailed a heartbreaking personal loss which spiked the conversation surrounding miscarriage to the highest it had been spoken of in over two decades at the time of publishing.
Meghan is a passionate advocate for mental health and family care, the holistic support of women and children’s rights, and the immeasurable value of one’s self worth. Her core belief that representation matters, and her connection to community through the lens of learning, healing, and inspiring have helped define her as a cultural catalyst for positive change. Meghan resides in California with her husband and their children Prince Archie Harrison and Princess Lilibet Diana, and their three dogs.

Swami Vivekananda Quotes - National Youth Day 2024
Tumblr media
One of India's greatest spiritual masters, Swami Vivekananda, is recognized for having elevated Hindu philosophy to a global prominence. His well-known address at the 1893 World's Parliament of Religions in Chicago permanently altered public perception of India. This Chicago speech is regarded as the best speech delivered by an Indian speaker. In his speech, Vivekananda brought up communalism, religious intolerance, and bloodshed. Ramakrishna Mission was created by Swami Vivekananda. In honor of the great saint Swami Vivekananda on the occasion of his birth, we have collected a few of his timeless sayings that still hold true today. On January 12, 1863, Swami Vivekananda was born in Calcutta, British India, as Narendra Nath Datta. In India, January 12, also known as Yuva Diwas, is celebrated as National Youth Day in honor of Swami Vivekananda.
“ Experience is the only teacher we have. We may talk and reason all our lives, but we shall not understand a word of truth.. ”
“ I pray to God that every one of you may become a bright, shining lamp, and carry the light into the world.. ”
“ अपने सपनों को अपनी मेहनत से मिलता है, और उन्हें पूरा करने के लिए हमें उन पर विश्वास करना होता है।. ”
“ In a day, when you don’t come across any problems – you can be sure that you are travelling in a wrong path. ”
“ It is the repetition of affirmations that leads to belief. And once you believe in a thing, it has the power to become real.. ”

Role of English Language in India
Languages are important in the life of any nation. The members of a social group need language to communicate with each other, for all social purposes, for public administration, for commerce and industry, for education and so on.
Ours is a country with Multilingual, Multicultural, and pluralistic milieu. Social aspirations can best be fulfilled when they are allowed to function through the mother tongue. Therefore it is natural to think of mother tongue for the purpose of education. But the necessity to have a common language for interaction has led to the learning of English.
The English language is a powerful force not just for economics, business, and trade, but for mutual respect and progress. It is also becoming the common future of human commerce and communication. English is the best tool to provide good opportunity for the learner to learn. This is also the language of instruction in all the Universities and colleges across the country. The scenario is such that one needs to polish the skills of English to obtain a job. Mere knowledge of subjects is no more the only criteria to secure a job in today’s date. With the growing globalization, one must definitely be able to communicate in English and should have a good English vocabulary, if one wants to go across the country for educational or job purposes.
Thus, though a foreign language, English occupies a unique position in the Indian educational system. Even after independence, it continues to be a major language having a prestigious position in our society. This chapter attempts to focus attention on the role of the English language and the changing needs of English Language Teaching and Learning in India. English speaking and English listening are given a very high priority in the Indian educational system. The elite society in India sends their children to English-medium schools and even the poorest of the poor aspire to send their children to the same since English is seen as a language that provides upward economic and social mobility.
Speaking is one of the most difficult skills language learners would face. In spite of this, it has traditionally been forced into the background while teachers of English, have spent all the classroom time trying to teach students how to write, to read and sometimes even to listen. English speaking is generally thought to be the most important of the four skills. This skill is the most complicated due to the fact that non-native speakers have to interpret not only the message that other speakers try to express, but also take into account other possibilities.
Contrary to what everybody thinks about foreign language learning, listening competence is wider than speaking competence. It has taken many years to give the listening skill the importance it deserves in second and foreign language learning among the teaching profession. This is the reason why recently, the language teaching profession has brought into focus on English listening comprehension.
Tumblr media
English is the only language which is understood by educated people all over the country. English speaking and English listening are needed not just for operational purposes but also for identifying oneself with those who use the language in India and abroad.
According to Dr. S. Radha Krishnan Commission on Education “English is the only means of preventing our isolation from the world and we will act unwisely if we allow ourselves to be enveloped in the folds of a dark curtain of ignorance”.
