WESTERN ASTROLOGY ā THE ORIGINS AND FACTS ABOUT WESTERN ASTROLOGY
Western astrology is a system of divination based on the position of the planets and stars at the time of a personās birth. It has its roots in ancient Babylonian astronomy and was later developed by the Greeks and Romans. Western astrology uses a zodiac system that divides the sky into twelve sections, each represented by a different astrological sign. Each sign is associated with certain characteristics and traits, and the position of the planets and stars at the time of a personās birth is believed to influence their personality, relationships, and life path. Western astrology can be used for personal guidance, relationship compatibility, and even predicting future events. While some people view it as a form of entertainment, others take it very seriously and use it as a tool for self-discovery and personal growth.

From The Atlantic: Substack Has a Nazi Problem
[that link is to an archived version, so no paywall]
Bottom Line: the CEOs/leaders of Substack aren't just being laissez-faire about the fascists and open white supremacists on the platform, they actively boost them by having them on the company podcast, featuring them, mentioning them, and boosting them. Because the newsletters bring in LOADS of money and they love money. Even newsletters that repeatedly violate the basic, useless guidelines of Substack, they do not get punished.
This isn't a huge surprise for anyone who has been following the major issues with Substack that have come up in the past few years. There was the whole scandal where the public discovered that Substack had been paying people secretly to be on the service while advertising that anyone can make it on their own here! Plus, they were paying bigots directly to put their newsletters on the srvice.
Good breakdowns of that from Annalee Newitz and Grace Lavery.
Then there was the disasterous interview one of the CEOs (Chris Best) did with Nilay Patel of The Verge when Substack's Twitter clone launched. Nilay -- who is, if you hadn't guessed, of Indian descent -- asked him pointed questions about content moderation and... well...
[Nilay] I just want to be clear, if somebody shows up on Substack and says āall brown people are animals and they shouldnāt be allowed in America,ā youāre going to censor that. Thatās just flatly against your terms of service. [Best] So, we do have a terms of service that have narrowly prescribed things that are not allowed. That one Iām pretty sure is just flatly against your terms of service. You would not allow that one. Thatās why I picked it. So there are extreme cases, and Iām not going to get into theā Wait. Hold on. In America in 2023, that is not so extreme, right? āWe should not allow as many brown people in the country.ā Not so extreme. Do you allow that on Substack? Would you allow that on Substack Notes? I think the way that we think about this is we want to put the writers and the readers in chargeā No, I really want you to answer that question. Is that allowed on Substack Notes? āWe should not allow brown people in the country.ā Iām not going to get into gotcha content moderation. This is not a gotcha... Iām a brown person. Do you think people on Substack should say I should get kicked out of the country? Iām not going to engage in content moderation, āWould you or wonāt you this or that?ā That one is black and white, and I just want to be clear: Iāve talked to a lot of social network CEOs, and they would have no hesitation telling me that that was against their moderation rules. Yeah. Weāre not going to get into specific āwould you or wonāt youā content moderation questions. Why? I donāt think itās a useful way to talk about this stuff.
Best wasn't willing to get into these "gotchas" around their new social network, which is a pretty clear indication that they won't get into it around content moderation on the original platform. (Their statement after the fact did nothing to make things better.)
It's also really clear from the Atlantic article that the Substack CEOs/Owners are, at best, more interested in making money than in keeping white supremacists and Nazis (literal ones) off their platform. At worst, the Substack CEOs/Owners are supremacist/Nazi sympathizers. Either way:
Substack Directly Supports the Alt-Right, Nazis, and White Supremacists
Openly, brazenly, and without remorse.

On this day, 8 April 2013, former Conservative prime minister Margaret Thatcher died. Street parties broke out across the UK, particularly in working class areas and in former mining communities which were ravaged by her policies. Her legacy is best remembered for her destruction of the British workers' movement, after the defeat of the miners' strike of 1984-85. This enabled the drastic increase of economic inequality and unemployment in the 1980s. Her government also slashed social housing, helping to create the situation today where it is unavailable for most people, and private property prices are mostly unaffordable for the young. Thatcher also complained that children were "being cheated of a sound start in life" by being taught that "they have an inalienable right to be gay", so she introduced the vicious section 28 law prohibiting teaching of homosexuality as acceptable. Abroad, Thatcher was a powerful advocate for racism, advising the Australian foreign minister to beware of Asians, else his country would "end up like Fiji, where the Indian migrants have taken over". She hosted apartheid South Africa's head of state, while denouncing the African National Congress as a "typical terrorist organisation". Chilean dictator general Augusto Pinochet, responsible for the rape, murder and torture of tens of thousands of people, was a close personal friend. Back in Britain, she protected numerous politicians accused of paedophilia including Sir Peter Hayman, and MPs Peter Morrison and Cyril Smith. She also lobbied for her friend, serial child abuser Jimmy Savile, to be knighted despite being warned about his behaviour. Margaret Thatcher was eventually forced to step down after the defeat of her hated poll tax by a mass non-payment campaign. Pictured: Jimmy Savile welcoming Thatcher to hell, reportedly. Like, I've been thinking about making a post about how as much as I appreciate the work that's being done with Chakotay in Prodigy, the ultimate solution to fixing Star Trek's embarrassing Indigenous representation is to give us more Indigenous characters, ideally main characters, so that things balance out. You just need to hire an actually Indigenous consultant this time. Like how it used to be super gross that the vast majority of Star Trek's queer characters were from the evil dimension, but now that we have a lot more Prime Universe queer characters, things mostly even out.
But then there's this guy, who off the top of my head is the only Indigenous character I can think of in New Trek, and he's also a mess. Star Trek, this is embarrassing for you! And obviously, also offensive! You have to fix this shit! Please hire a consultant!
Don't love that the one guy in the prison who the narrative judges as having actually committed a crime deserving imprisonment rather than being arrested as part of a political tactic is the Indigenous guy. And the fact that he is so penitent as to be willing to sacrifice his life about it, and thus is simultaneously presented as uniquely moral among the prisoners also falls into some stereotypes
#it is worth noting that I'm a white usamerican#my voice is not the one you need to listen to on this#i recommend reading the book Indian Stereotypes in TV Science Fiction: First Nations Voices Speak Out by Sierra S Adare#which comes to the very sad conclusion that chakotay does suck as rep#but because every one else sucks worse#he's the best option#i also recommend the Metis in Space podcast which discusses depictions of Indigenous people in genre fiction#i haven't gotten to any of their Trek episodes yet#but i can't imagine they love them#dsc

Day 3/100 days of Productivity
4th April, 2024
Academia
I did revision sheet of basic maths. This was the fourth time, and I remember most of the things, so I will space the next revision for it to 4-5 days.
I listened to a podcast of Neural System again like yesterday. It's my favorite way to get a little overview of these subjects.
I did biology revision sheets. Half of them.
Made revision sheet for Animal Kingdom. I'm halfway through to mastering at this chapter.
[Didn't do much today in terms of lectures.]
Non Academia
I watched a video essay Orientalism in Wes Anderson movies. Just makes me think that this is very prevalent. I've seen tons of westerners coming to eastern cultures and talking about the people and thier culture as if they're monkeys in a zoo, doing tricks. Though, there are a lot of people who take genuine interest and put efforts to understand a culture, I still feel like the objectification of eastern people is very rampant.
I watched another video essay while having my breakfast, and its was by Mina Le, I love her, her videos are always informative and engaging and her voice is so perfect for such essays. I was watching the costume analysis of Squid Game, a video from 2 years ago. And she highlighted the point about having uniforms and how some uniforms are made to rid people of thier identity. I'm always wondering whether people should have uniforms or not? Do you think we should?
I watched this really incredible video on Indian ancestry and genetics.
I finally, after so long, watched a GoSe episode!!!
Heyyyy how's it going? It's 1:46 am of 4th April. And i should be asleep but I couldn't sleep, so now I'm preparing for the day. It's my friend's birthday today. April has a lot of birthdays. | As soon as, I woke up today, I saw a few things that just agitated my mind, in a bad sense. Now I gave to try to forget it all and still try to study. I'm terribly afraid of failure because I've been working for years on something and failing again would mean that I'm not worth it. But I've been getting messages from everywhere that I should try, continue trying, give my best and leave the rest to God. I'm trying to do just that. A good quote I read from 3rd chapter of Bhagvat Gita-"Win or defeat, happiness or sadness, profit or loss, think of all of these things to be the same, and start preparing for the war."

I went to see a beautiful play today by the NZ theatre company Indian Ink about the disappearance of Indiaās vultures and how thatās caused a huge problem for the Parsi (Zoroastrian) community. The play featured this amazing puppet.
This 99pi episode goes into the whole story around the vultures and itās one of the best reported podcasts Iāve ever heard. The story is really devastating and touching and will stay with me forever, I think.

āMerle Oberon, the durable Anglo-Indian beauty born Estelle Merle OāBrien Thompson in Tasmania (1911), made her film debut as an extra in a 1930 British B film, but soon her dramatic if one-dimensional beauty caught the eye of the Hungarian-born British producer Alexander Korda, who groomed her for stardom and was her husband for a time. In 1935 he sold a half-share in her contract to Samuel Goldwyn, another famous star spotter, who oversaw her transition from exotic to all-American. Never a top star but a popular actress in a number of prestigious films, Oberon continued to make periodic starring appearances until her death.ā
/ From Hollywood Colour Portraits by John Kobal, 1981 /
Born on this day: exquisite golden age Hollywood leading lady Merle Oberon (19 February 1911 - 23 November 1979). Of course, we now know that Oberon was actually born in Bombay, India rather than Tasmania, but that wasnāt common knowledge when film historian Kobal wrote his book in the early eighties. In her lifetime Oberon took painful efforts to conceal her mixed-race heritage (when even an onscreen interracial kiss ā then called āmiscegenationā - was strictly forbidden by the Hays Code), including the use of toxic skin-lightening make-up containing mercury. (A few years ago, the reliably excellent and addictive You Must Remember This podcast devoted an instalment to Oberon ā look it up!). In her romantic lead heyday Oberon specialized in period dramas (sheās probably best remembered for playing Catherine Earnshaw in Wuthering Heights (1939)), but I like her best in the movies that forced her out of her primarily decorative and ladylike comfort zone like the sordid Temptation (1946), the nymphomania-themed melodrama Of Love and Desire (1963) and especially the obscure 1956 film noir The Price of Fear, in which she plays a prim high society woman whose life unravels after a hit-and-run incident.

ok so i am very much uninformed on politics, i decided at a younger age that i wasn't interested in it and therefore would not read or keep myself particularly informed about it. obviously this is a bad idea, and i want to change and keep myself informed on actual politics and well, abstract[?] (wrong word but cannot think of another, basically mean like. knowing which political .. stance ?? [idk. like marxist or communist or whatever] i might be.) ones as well. what's a good place to get started here? where do i look for actual politics going on in india since i'm pretty sure ndtv or whatever isn't exactly the best source? or maybe it is? idk, like i said i'm pretty uninformed on the matter but would like to learn more
so one thing is, in india you have to accept the media landscape is just dire because being a journalist with integrity is a bit like signing up to have your life ruined. all major media has been bought by hindutva already. what you have to do is more learn to read between lines, understand people's motivations, which is a matter of practice. a good way to start is to read analysis (not news reports) of the same incident in different media and you'll start noticing patterns. even more important imo is to talk and bounce ideas with a friend at a similar place as you or someone interested in politics who won't overwhelm you with their perspective. you can try online but idt its safe or advisable anymore to do that experiment online. i had debate club in university (sad) and some socialist reading groups (better) after. the thing is this journey to self education is kind of personal and im also not pedagogically oriented or trained? so lots of first person description instead of prescriptions.
i still check what's up on ndtv because it gives me a good pulse of what english language media and liberals are thinking. major newspapers i scan hindu and the indian express sometimes. online i have a look at newslaundry (also has some youtube content) and the wire, they're reader supported and haven't turned full hindutva yet. i read longer form things in the caravan and epw, but these are subscription based. i keep tabs on the latest round of hindutva fake news when alt news debunks it.
for the abstract things, i literally did an online course bc i was frustrated by what all the liberal arts grads seemed to already agree on. i did ian shapiro's moral foundations of politics which is available online as both youtube lectures and a textbook. if you want to go that route feel free but it's not necessary, you can also try to read the entries on wikipedia or stanford encyclopedia of philosophy (more expertise) when you encounter something unfamiliar and build up like that. podcasts like bbc in our time will often interview academics to give intros to many political philosophy concepts and thinkers. whatever your learning style supports! i think the important thing is to find something you are actually interested in, and take that tack. i like history, so i might read books about historical revolutions or historical forms of organising society or listen to podcasts like mike duncan's revolutions.
For communism the usual starting points are these very short pamphlets:
Principles of Communism by Engels
The Manifesto of the Communist Party by Marx
Wage-Labor and Capital by Marx
Socialism: Utopian and Scientific by Engels
feel free to ask for more specific questions!
