What do you hope to gain from this experience?

I hope to acquire important skills that relate to working in the music industry.  I have always had a great interest in music, so I want to learn about how the industry operates.  Many of the artists that Girlie Action represents are among my personal favorites so I also want my work to aid and support their careers.  I love going down music rabbit holes where I explore sounds and artists I haven’t heard before.  Through this internship I hope that my knowledge of new musicians and what goes into promoting their work is expanded.

What else do you love besides music?

Aside from music, I love skateboarding.  I only really picked up skateboarding a year or two ago but since then I have been practicing a lot.  I also enjoy epee fencing.  There are many calculations and strategy changes that need to be made throughout a bout.  I don’t only enjoy thinking about my own moves, but also understanding how differences in focus can lead to other players developing distinct styles. The End of Living carrick bell and Rocco Ruglio-Misurell February 18 - March 12, 2023 Opening Reception Saturday February 18th, 7 -10pm Tiger Strikes Asteroid Los Angeles is pleased to present The End of Living, a two-person exhibition of new work by carrick bell and Rocco Ruglio-Misurell. Consisting of video and sound installation (bell) and sculpture, installation, and drawing (Ruglio-Misurell), The End of Living sketches out proposals for scavenging pleasure, hope, and connection in a long apocalyptic now with no guarantee of a future in sight. This exhibition is the second part of an exchange between artist-run spaces in Berlin and Los Angeles; in 2022, bell & Ruglio-Misurell hosted an exhibition of work from the member artists of TSALA in their Berlin-based non-profit space, Horse & Pony. The End of Living takes its name from an inversion of New Queer Cinema filmmaker Gregg Araki’s first feature-length film, The Living End. Shot on a minuscule budget with few resources and fewer permits, Araki’s film took the crisis of a specific community (in this case, the AIDS epidemic at a particular moment in the early 1990s) and spun it into a broader generational existential crisis. Flavored with a strong dose of premillennialist doom, the film asks how we can continue living in a world that is clearly in its death throes. Following two HIV-positive men on a Bonnie and Clyde tour of the American West, The Living End writes a new mythology for how sex, ethics, friendship, and subcultural resistance can be sustained in a world whose centers of meaning and coherence have been fractured and sold off. bell’s new video and sound installation directly engages the source material The Living End, consisting of a multi-screen video installation mounted to a wrought iron fence installed in front of the gallery’s windows. The video installation samples, distorts, and re-edits key fragments from  v. that amplify and elaborate moments of physical and erotic (dis)connection, the repetition and abstraction of found visual material proposing that, rather than seeking to escape where we find ourselves, we would do best to dig in and find our way through. Ruglio-Misurell will present a new body of work using personal experiences of the body, erotic touch, and clothing as the starting point. Pulling from his personal wardrobe, Ruglio-Misurell uses his former clothing to create freestanding sculptures, reliefs and hanging objects through casting and hardening the material. Garments such as jean cut-offs, jockstraps, tank tops, and button-downs are cut up, so only the seams and hems remain to show outlines of bodies. The altered garments have been soaked in Jesmonite (acrylic resin), making them hard once dry, and displayed on foil-covered pedestals. Using literal scraps and a mixture of constructed and found debris, these sculptures assemble leftovers, traces, casts, and impressions to tell fragments of stories. His reason why he SUDDENLY interested in all this heroic for little to nothing isn’t important. The problem is that he saved a kid  who was drowning in the deep side of the pool and as he was bringing the kid up  and got him to shore. A muscled pulled on his leg and Zeed miss his chance to get his hands on the ladder as he sinking.

Hi! Do you have any tips for deer proofing your garden or possibly plants that are tasty for humans but not deer? It's a bit too late in the growing season here in NJ but maybe I can plan ahead for next year. I've basically given up on new baby plants thriving between the deer and the squirrels eating everything before it's ready. Thanks!

So, deer and other megafauna are both the easiest and hardest animals to convince to leave your garden alone. They can't sneak in though any little holes, and tend to be pretty reactive to chemical agents, but if they're REALLY hungry they will literally trample your efforts. Some Suggestions ordered from "will deter lazy deer" to "might deter a really determined deer"

Marigolds and Nasturtium: These flowers are pretty, cheap, come in a wide variety of colors, grow well with lots of food crops and smell AWFUL to deer, rabbits and lots of other mammals. Deer have very accute senses of smell- better than a bloodhound's even! They mark thier territory with scents like dogs- with urine, and the scent glands on thier heads and feet. It might do to put a bunch of marigolds and nasturtiums in, and give your yard in general a good hose-down to wash away any markers they might have left. if these are suburban deer with lots of other things to nibble on, this will probably work, country deer tend to be a bit hungrier.

Coyote and Cougar Urine: This stuff comes with a big USE WITH CAUTION warning, because it might work better than intended, or not at all. Deer absolutely will not hang out where they think predators are regularly patrolling, but that really sensitive nose is time-sensitive as well- you have to keep applying the coyote/cougar urine or they will think the carnivores have moved on, ad the bottled urine/pheromones get expensive fast. You also run the not-insubstantial risk that if there are Coyotes and Cougar in your area (if you are where deer are getting into the garden, there are almost certainly also coyote and quite probably cougar) will take offense to this percived interloper on their turf, and start hanging around your place so they can kick the newcomer's ass. This is more of a problem in the rockies than Jersey, but still possible.

Heavy-Duty Fencing: We're talking a minimum of 8ft high fencing, really more like 12, and possibly putting a whole roof on your garden if the deer are REALLY hungry. You can basically put a chicken-wire enclosure around your garden and this will also help with squirrels and rabbits, and you can also use the walls as a trellis for peas and squash, but the price of lumber being what it is, this is not a cheap option. I do like this option for giving you a tangible project to give you serotonin, and it doubles as gardening armature too.

Getting a Large Dog: I'm assuming that if you have a garden you've got the space and hopefully fenced yard suitable for a dog, but if you do, this might be your best option. You can go down to the ASPCA and get a quarentine surrender for about $150 depending on region, and your nw Best Friend For Life will keep everything out of the garden by peeing everywhere, barking loudly and chasing anything that moves. This is obviously a 10-15 year investment and absolutely not for everyone in terms of time/energy/money/personality, but this is definitely the best way to keep deer out of your garden and IMHO, the most enjoyable.

So I’m not stupid enough to talk about the Deborah situation with the current boarders since it could get back to her, but I tracked down the people that just left (it’s a daughter/parent combo that between them boarded 2 horses), and yeah. They left because she made them doctor the one horse that had the abscess for 2 weeks after they previously had the impression the barn could take care of it. And a few other reasons, but that was the main one.

Is she stupid or what? Two weeks ago she drives out boarders with 2 horses over an abscess, and she’s about to do the same with me this week, who has another 2 horses.

On the phone she kept ranting about how, “I can't believe you think I’m nickel and diming you; I’m not even profitable so I’m astonished that the price is a problem for you, ect.” Well, I do believe that she’s not profitable. But I think it has more to do with the fact that she has a luxury almost 70 acre farm in the county with the most expensive property taxes in the country, with three barns, but she’s boarding less than 20 horses. I believe there are 16 on the property now, and 2 of those are her own.  So yeah, if she owns a property with the facilities for 30 horses, maybe more if she loses the stick up her butt that she generally has about pasture boarding, but is only boarding 14, I can see how she has money issues. But that’s not my fault, and going back on what she previously said and charging me more for services is not the solution. Getting more boarders and keeping the ones she currently has is.

She is getting boarders because she is leading them to believe that this is a full service facility, and if that’s true, then yes, her prices are reasonable. But over $1,000 a month for a facility that is NOT full service isn’t. There are cheaper barns in the area that are also not full service; I just didn't go with them because  I needed full service. And that is something I made very clear to her when I visited.

Anyway, I resisted the urge of writing an email to her last night about how Rosa said it does not take an hour to do the wraps, how she was wrong in saying that I have no idea what goes on with my horse, etc, because I know that will just make things worse. I can let what happened go and deal with her unpleasantness for the sake of my horses who are happy here. 

However, I’m going to need clarity on whether she is ultimately going to be able to do soaks, wraps, ect. She indicated that she no longer wanted to provide those services, and if she decides to stop, then I’m going to have to leave. There’s no way I can come everyday if something else happens unless I drop out of school or stop working.

I’m not going to the barn today because I know she will be around, and I think she needs time to cool off. Tomorrow I’ll go back to NJ for easter. On Wednesday I’m planning to either call her or see if she wants to meet in person. I’m not going to bring up the rude stuff she said over the phone, but I’m just going to be honest and re-iterate that I need to be at a place that is truly full service, and if she can’t provide that and/or give me a set daily price for soaking, wrapping, cleaning cuts, handgrazing, or doing boots, which I know sooner or later will inevitably be needed with one or both of my horses, I’m going to have to go. If she takes it as spite rather than the necessity that it is that’s too bad.

I got the number of a person who runs a small full service western boarding barn in the town over. It is actually under $1,000 a month, which is AMAZING for this area. It’s certainly not beautiful, but there is decent turnout there,  the boarders who just left said that so far there have been no safety issues like broken fencing, and the care is good. That’s all that matters to me. Fingers crossed that they’d have room for two more if I do have to leave, because they seem like the  best option right now. I haven't been able to reach them yet, but I understand that everyone is busy with Easter.
