“The beardless youth… does not foresee what is useful, squandering his money.” -- Horace
20 BCE
“Our sires’ age was worse than our grandsires’. We, their sons, are more worthless than they; so in our turn we shall give the world a progeny yet more corrupt.” -- Book III of Odes, Horace
1330s
"Modern fashions seem to keep on growing more and more debased … The ordinary spoken language has also steadily coarsened. People used to say ‘raise the carriage shafts’ or ‘trim the lamp wick,’ but people today say ‘raise it’ or ‘trim it.’ When they should say, ‘Let the men of the palace staff stand forth!’ they say, ‘Torches! Let’s have some light!’” -- Tsurezuregusa (Essays in Idleness), Yoshida Kenkō

1771
“Whither are the manly vigour and athletic appearance of our forefathers flown? Can these be their legitimate heirs? Surely, no; a race of effeminate, self-admiring, emaciated fribbles can never have descended in a direct line from the heroes of Potiers and Agincourt…” -- Letter in Town and Country magazine republished in Paris Fashion: A Cultural History
1790
“The free access which many young people have to romances, novels, and plays has poisoned the mind and corrupted the morals of many a promising youth…” -- Memoirs of the Bloomsgrove Family, Reverend Enos Hitchcock
1843
“…a fearful multitude of untutored savages… [boys] with dogs at their heels and other evidence of dissolute habits…[girls who] drive coal-carts, ride astride upon horses, drink, swear, fight, smoke, whistle, and care for nobody…the morals of children are tenfold worse than formerly.” -- Anthony Ashley Cooper, the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury, Speech to the House of Commons
1904
“Never has youth been exposed to such dangers of both perversion and arrest as in our own land and day. Increasing urban life with its temptations, prematurities, sedentary occupations, and passive stimuli just when an active life is most needed, early emancipation and a lessening sense for both duty and discipline…” -- The Psychology of Adolescence, Granville Stanley Hall
1925
“We defy anyone who goes about with his eyes open to deny that there is, as never before, an attitude on the part of young folk which is best described as grossly thoughtless, rude, and utterly selfish.” -- The Conduct of Young People, Hull Daily Mail

“Cinemas and motor cars were blamed for a flagging interest among young people in present-day politics by ex-Provost JK Rutherford… [He] said he had been told by people in different political parties that it was almost impossible to get an audience for political meetings. There were, of course, many distractions such as the cinema…” -- Young People and Politics, Kirkintilloch Herald, 1938

Are you passionate about fashion and love to write? Whether you’re a seasoned writer, a fashion enthusiast, or someone looking to break into the world of fashion blogging, "write for us fashion" is an excellent way to get started. Many fashion websites, blogs, and online magazines look for guest contributors to share fresh insights on trends, styling tips, fashion history, and sustainable fashion, among other topics. This blog will guide you on why guest blogging in the fashion industry is valuable, how to create high-quality content that stands out, and tips for getting your articles published successfully.
Why Write for Fashion Blogs?
Fashion blogs and websites are constantly on the lookout for engaging, well-researched content that appeals to their audiences. For writers, this opens up many doors for collaboration and growth. Here are a few key benefits:
Establishing Your Voice: Writing for fashion blogs helps you establish yourself in the fashion community. By creating content that speaks to a specific audience, you can develop a unique voice and perspective.
Building a Portfolio: If you’re a new writer, guest blogging is one of the best ways to build a portfolio. Published content on established sites adds credibility to your work and makes it easier to secure writing opportunities.
Learning SEO: Many blogs will guide you on the importance of SEO (Search Engine Optimization) to increase content visibility. Guest blogging is a fantastic way to practice writing SEO-friendly articles, which is a valuable skill for any writer.
Networking Opportunities: Connecting with blog owners, editors, and other writers helps you build relationships in the fashion industry. This network can lead to further writing gigs, partnerships, or even career opportunities.
Creative Outlet: Fashion writing gives you a chance to channel your creativity. From covering the latest runway trends to creating styling guides, fashion blogging lets you express yourself and share your personal fashion style with others.
Types of Fashion Content to Write About
Understanding what type of content appeals to fashion readers is crucial. Here are some popular content categories that most fashion blogs look for:
Trends and Forecasts: Readers want to know what's hot and what’s next in fashion. Articles that discuss upcoming trends, runway analyses, and season-specific styles are always popular.
Styling Tips and Guides: Guides that provide tips for pairing outfits, styling for different occasions, or building a capsule wardrobe are highly valued by readers who want practical advice.
Sustainable and Ethical Fashion: With growing awareness about the environmental impact of fashion, sustainable fashion articles are in demand. Topics like eco-friendly brands, second-hand fashion, and ways to be a conscious shopper are appreciated by many fashion blogs.
Fashion and Culture: Many readers enjoy learning about fashion influences from around the world or historical fashion movements. Writing about the fashion history of specific cultures or famous fashion icons can add value to readers' understanding of the industry.
DIY Fashion Projects: For readers who love getting hands-on, articles on making their accessories or upcycling old clothes are quite popular. If you have experience in fashion design, sharing step-by-step guides can be very engaging.
Fashion Tech and Innovations: Technology is influencing fashion at a rapid pace. If you’re tech-savvy, consider writing about AI, digital fashion design, virtual fitting rooms, or the impact of fashion apps on shopping habits.
Guidelines for Writing Effective
Writing for a fashion blog requires a blend of creativity and structure. Here are some writing tips that can help make your content stand out.
Focus on Authenticity
Unique Perspective: Readers appreciate authenticity. Make sure to bring your personality and unique fashion perspective into your writing.
Personal Stories: Don’t be afraid to include personal experiences or stories about your own fashion journey. These stories make your content more relatable.
Emphasize Structure
Clear Headings and Subheadings: Organize your article with clear headings, making it easier for readers to scan and find information quickly.
Short Paragraphs: Fashion blogs typically keep paragraphs short and to the point, as it increases readability.
Lists and Bullet Points: When offering tips or lists, use bullet points to make the content more digestible. This keeps readers engaged and makes key points easier to remember.
Write SEO-Friendly Content
Use Keywords Naturally: To rank well on search engines, use keywords such as “write for us fashion,” “fashion tips,” or “latest trends.” Avoid keyword stuffing, as it can make the article sound unnatural.
Optimize for Readability: Use simple language and active voice to keep the article engaging. Also, incorporate images or visuals if allowed by the blog’s guidelines.
Pay Attention to Formatting
Quality Images: Where possible, use high-quality images that enhance your content. Images add visual appeal and help explain styling tips or fashion trends more effectively.
Grammar and Proofreading: Make sure your article is free from spelling and grammar errors. Tools like Grammarly can be helpful for catching mistakes.
Follow the Blog’s Style: Each blog may have its unique style and tone, so review a few articles on the blog to get a sense of the voice and format they prefer.
How to Find Fashion Blogs to Write For
Now that you know what and how to write, the next step is finding the right blogs to pitch your content. Here are a few methods to help you discover guest posting opportunities:
Google Search: Using search terms like “write for us fashion,” “fashion guest post,” or “submit a fashion article” can lead you to blogs that accept guest posts.
Social Media: Some fashion brands and bloggers post about guest blogging opportunities on social media platforms. Follow fashion accounts on Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter, and stay updated on any “write for us” announcements.
Blog Directories: Sites like AllTop or Blogarama categorize blogs by niche. Use these directories to find reputable fashion blogs and check their websites to see if they accept submissions.
Join Fashion Writer Groups: Online communities, especially on Facebook or LinkedIn, often have members who share guest post opportunities. Look for groups related to fashion writing and content marketing.
Tips for a Successful Pitch
Pitching your article ideas effectively is essential. Here’s how to make your pitch stand out:
Research the Blog’s Content: Understand the type of content the blog publishes. Tailor your pitch to fit their audience’s preferences and ensure your idea aligns with their current topics.
Be Specific in Your Proposal: Briefly explain your article idea, why it’s relevant, and how it will benefit their readers. Use an engaging tone that conveys your excitement for the topic.
Highlight Your Expertise: Share a bit about yourself, including any relevant experience or links to your previous work, if applicable. This builds credibility and shows the blog owner that you’re serious about fashion.
Follow Submission Guidelines: Many fashion blogs have specific guidelines for guest posts. Review these guidelines carefully to show professionalism and respect for their time.
Common Pitfalls to Avoid
Before you submit, make sure to avoid these common pitfalls that can hinder your chances of getting published:
Pitching Irrelevant Topics: Make sure your idea aligns with the blog’s focus and readership. Pitching off-topic content is a fast way to get rejected.
Ignoring Guidelines: Ignoring submission guidelines can make you seem careless or unprofessional. Always double-check for any specific rules the blog has outlined.
Submitting Plagiarized Content: Ensure your work is original. Plagiarism is a serious issue that will harm your reputation and prevent future writing opportunities.
Overlooking Grammar and Spelling: Spelling and grammatical mistakes make a bad first impression. Take the time to proofread thoroughly.
Key Takeaways
Guest blogging for fashion blogs is a rewarding way to grow as a writer, build a portfolio, and engage with a community of fashion lovers. Here’s a recap of the steps to get started:
Understand the benefits of fashion guest blogging.

Critical Thinking Lecture 3: Current Fashion & Textile Innovations - what's next?
In today's lecture we learnt about different technological innovations and how they impact the fashion and textile industry.
We began by learning about 'smart textiles'. The idea is to utilise textiles to improve people's day to day lives and the concept is split into 2 categories (aesthetic and performance enhancing). One example of a brand that is pioneering this is CuteCircuit, who in 2002 developed the 'hug shirt' which mimics the sensation of a hug using sensors imbedded in a digital print. Although this invention received an award for being one of the best of the year by Time Magazine (2006), as a class we were unsure about what the customer demographic would be and whether in reality this was a commercially viable product. CuteCircuit have also created 'the silver twinkle slip dress', which 'illuminates in a host of colours and changes with your movement'. For our brand, we feel that we could incorporate this kind of motion sensor, LED technology, if we were ever to branch out into occasion wear, as we feel that this would work effectively on more extravagant garments.
We then looked at innovative technologies, discussing 3D digital clothing, augmented pattern design and blockchain technology. Innovative technology and design can work hand in hand to create better fitting and more sustainable clothing. For example, Synflux have developed a system in which they use 3D scanning to take someone's measurements and then use a computer algorithm to find a design pattern that creates the least amount of fabric waste. We also looked at digital clothing, discussing the pros and cons for fashion brands. The aim of brands such as DRESSX to reduce consumption, seems to currently be overshadowed by a number of issues, such as designer's lack of experience, certain materials not rendering well and a high production cost.
Moving on to innovative design, we then looked at artificial intelligence and 3D printing. Fashion brand Acne Studios' A/W 2020 collection utilised AI technology and a computer algorithm to produce garments based off the brand's previous designs. The results were garments with holes and sections missing to reference digital glitches, as well as shirts without buttons and warped prints. As well as designing products, AI can also assist in trend forecasting, visual merchandising and improved customer personalisation. One example of this is Uniqlo having stores with 'UMood' kiosks, which measure a customer's reaction to certain styles and colours using neurotransmitters and recommend products based off this data. The final thing we looked at in this lecture was 3D printing. There are many positives to using 3D printing in fashion, including reduction of waste, customisation and an increased speed to market. Our group felt this could be an interesting thing to explore, as we wanted to use embellishments like beads and sequins on our garments, which are traditionally not environmentally friendly but could be made more so using 3D printing.

Hey there! Aspiring fashion designer here! I'm getting more and more into fashion and designing/ planning more and more outfits and I was wondering if you have any tips to get more into haute contour and fashion in general. Your blog has really helped me get a grasp of what I like and I all around love it!
I’m happy this blog could help in figuring out what styles you like! There are a ton of different mediums to get into fashion! I’ve compiled a list of options via videos, websites, and books. So strap in, this is a long post.
Since you already have an idea of who you like, I always suggest reading up on that brand/label/designer and going through their archives. For me, when I realized how much I loved Dior and knew I wanted to learn more, it was overwhelming at times because the label has such a long history. If you really like newer labels, like Zuhair Murad, Elie Saab, Iris van Herpen, etc., it’s a little more manageable to read up on the history and designers just because they were founded in the ‘90s/‘00s.
In terms of websites, I have a few to talk about.
Vogue. This is the easiest avenue to get into fashion. I’m not knocking it, because I use it the most for photos, but as far as websites go, it’s the most dumbed-down. But I mean that in the best way! The features, trend reports, and runway news appeals to even the most casual fashion fan. Vogue focuses mainly on big name/commercialized brands (Dior, Valentino, Gucci, etc.) rather than smaller ones (like Guo Pei and Ralph & Russo, two big couture names these days, get minimal coverage with Vogue). Vogue is a great resource for runway looks...it was my gateway into studying older runway collections. All in all, in terms of websites, Vogue is the tip of the fashion media iceberg. If you want to get into the more meatier parts of fashion, there are better sites.
Harper’s Bazaar. Like Vogue, it’s easy to navigate and leans more towards the more well-known fashion brands. Pre-covid, they always had a weekly street style recap as well. They have great lists but stay away from the business side of fashion. I typically use Harper’s Bazaar for the street style/every day fashion inspiration and news.
Who What Wear. A great site for following trends. They don’t focus so much on brands, but it’s a great resource for seeing what’s trending and options to buy said trends. For example, Who What Wear is the first place I went when I wanted to find a list of brands who were starting to sell masks.
WWD. Supposedly most designers prefer WWD to Vogue coverage. And it shows, since parts of the site require a subscription. WWD is one of the more technical sites and could be overwhelming for someone who doesn’t really understand the industry. They talk about the comings-and-goings of creative directors, financial news, and general fashion trends/news. It also has runway recaps and photos, which is typically what I use it for. If you’re really want to be in the know with breaking fashion news, they do offer email newsletters as well for a more condensed version of the site. Also, a super helpful page I’ve had bookmarked, their fashion dictionary.
Business of Fashion. The name is pretty self-explanatory. BoF is another one of those meatier sites that could be overwhelming at first. It’s also one that has a subscription service. BoF has great profiles of designers, so I’ve used the site as my starting point when learning about someone new. The BoF500 also showcases anyone and everyone who has a hand in shaping the industry.
The Impression. The cheapest of the subscription sites and the one I had until I cancelled a few months ago (not because it sucked, but, you know…corona). I mainly used them for their runway pictures. They were so fast to upload them, with details and backstage footage. The big draw is the fashion week/runway photography, but the talk about street style, short films and ads from brands, as well as fashion trends. At the end of every fashion week (New York, Milan, Paris, etc.) the put together a recap list of biggest trends, top shows, top models, and break down the numbers. I love the site for its minimalism and whenever the industry decides to have fashion weeks again, I’ll renew my subscription.
Magazines: Most people would say Vogue is the holy grail for fashion magazines, but I don’t think it’s that great (at least the US version). Vogue Paris, Italia, and UK are better in my opinion. And just because I don’t think the print version of US Vogue is the holy grail, doesn’t mean I don’t like it. I have a subscription and read it every month. Other options I really like are Harper’s Bazaar (any country’s version), Elle, InStyle, and W.
Videos: Other than the first one listed (which can be found on Netflix or Hulu, depending where you live), everything can be found on youtube. And now i’m constantly getting fashion recommendations on youtube, so it’s an easy rabbit hole to fall into.
First Monday in May. I’ve talked about this documentary before, but it bears repeating. It’s a gorgeous journey of how the Met Gala and Costume Institute Exhibit was put together. It’s about the ‘China: Through the Looking Glass’ exhibit in 2015. They interview big designers about how China has influenced some of their collections, and takes on the debate of whether fashion should even be in a museum. It was the first fashion documentary I ever watched and only made me fall more in love with fashion (and want to see every fashion exhibition).
The September Issue. Vogue’s September issues are always the biggest of the year. This documentary follows the process of designing the famous September issue of Vogue. I believe it was filmed in 2007 or 2008 so it’s dated, and digital media has changed the game, but it’s a good watch to see just how influential and important the September issue is in terms of forecasting fashion trends for the following year.
Savoir Faire: Christian Dior Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2011. A 50 minute video on how one, just one, piece from the couture collection was designed. It’s a great insight on just how much work goes in to creating a couture collection.
7 Days Out with Karl Lagerfeld. Another great showcase of the week leading up to a couture show, this time with Chanel. The documentary follows the 2018 show, which is one of Lagerfeld’s last few couture shows before his death.
Battle At Versailles: The Competition that Shook the Fashion Industry. It’s no secret that Paris is the epicenter of fashion. The couture houses are all based there, so France is typically where you needed to be to be a world renowned designer. In 1973 French and American designers competed against each other and brought American designers into the spotlight. There’s an hour long documentary on youtube and there’s a book that I’ve linked below. I’ve seen the video and I’m currently reading the book, so you have options here.
Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams. A good look at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs exhibit for the 70th anniversary of Dior. This documentary gives a nice, condensed look at each of the artistic directors of Dior and showcases some of the most iconic Dior looks. I knew about it, but didn’t go see it. I only saw pictures, which were beautiful…but to see it all come together on video was a dream. They talk to Celine Dion for a minute at the end, and her words sum up my feelings best about Dior, “I would love to wear one of these dresses one day, maybe in one of my lifetimes, or every night in my dreams.”
Books:
Inside Haute Couture: Behinds the Scenes at the Paris Ateliers. A gorgeous book with tons of photos about the intricacies that go in to a couture collection.
Kate Spade New York: All in Good Taste. I originally bought it for my coffee table collection, but it has some great style tips.
The Battle of Versailles: The Night American Fashion Stumbled into the Spotlight and Made History. Just in case you’d rather read about this legendary fashion show than watch. I’m currently reading it, so I can’t give you my final take on it. But I’m loving it so far.
Dior by Dior: Christian Dior’s autobiography. Who better to tell you about the history of Christian Dior, than Dior himself.
Elsa Schiaparelli: A Biography. I’m a big fan of Schiaparelli and would love for her legacy to be more widely known. She was a very private person, so when this biography dropped I was excited to read more about her. Elsa Schiaparelli was Coco Chanel’s biggest rival and was a household name in her time, but most people know Coco’s name over Elsa’s today. This is a nice dive into Schiaparelli’s life, since most people focus on Chanel’s legacy (and let’s be honest, Chanel is very idolized, which is so unfortunate, given her Nazi ties, but I digress.)
Gods and Kings: The Rise and Fall of Alexander McQueen and John Galliano. I tend to rave about the designs by these two, so it’s a good look into their journey in fashion.
The Beautiful Fall: Fashion, Genuis, and Glorious Excess in 1970s Paris. If you’re interested in Lagerfeld (pre-Chanel days) or Yves Saint Laurent, it’s a great retrospective look at their rivalry.
Champagne Supernovas. If ‘90s fashion is something of interest, this book is a great read on how some big name rebels (McQueen, Marc Jacobs, Kate Moss, etc.) in the industry remade fashion as we know it.
Any of the Met Gala books: Camp: Notes on Fashion, Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty, Manus x Machina, Heavenly Bodies, etc. My first one was the McQueen book, and at the time I didn’t know it was the official book from the Costume Institute Exhibit. They’re not all hardcover coffee table-esque books, but if you can’t attend an exhibit it’s the next best thing. They’re all great in-depth resources for learning about a certain area of fashion. They can be expensive, so I wouldn’t suggest investing in them unless you’re truly interested in that specific aspect of the industry. This year’s exhibit - whenever it opens - is About Time: Fashion and Duration. The exhibition book is already available and I think it’ll be an incredible exhibit of how current designers pull from older designers and trends.
The Fashion Book. It’s expensive. It’s massive. And it gives you a wealth of information. It’s essentially an encyclopedia for fashion. It’s not just designers; it highlights models, high profile photographers, style icons, and all those who influenced fashion.
I know this was long, but these have been the resources I’ve used over the years. I hope this can help you along your journey and if anyone has other things to add, please do!

Cookies - The Perfect Cliche Part 3

‘Bitch you did what??’
‘I know I know,’ Elizabeth mumbled around the spoonful of ice cream in her mouth, dragging a hand down her face. ‘It just happened I just reacted and… I didn’t mean to hit him in the face.’
‘Yeah no one means to hit their insanely hot neighbour in the face,’ her best friend replied sarcastically. ‘What did he say? He must have been pissed!’
Elizabeth hesitated as she scooped another mouthful of raspberry ripple into her mouth, straight from the tub. ‘He actually let me use his shower after that.’
‘WHAT?!?’ Athena’s screech was loud enough to break the sound barrier and her eardrums. ‘You mean to tell me that you were naked in that man’s apartment while he was also in that same apartment? How did you not get laid?’
‘Are we forgetting how just moments ago I’d hit him in the face with a wooden spoon? And I feel so bad about that,’ Elizabeth rushed on before her friend could get a word in. ‘I made him cookies.’
‘Cookies?’ There was a snort over the line. ‘What are we twelve?’
‘What was I supposed to do? Offer him sex instead?’ She winced immediately, knowing she shouldn’t have given Athena the opening.
‘You know I would have. At least if I was still single of course.’
‘What would you be doing if you were still single?’ A male voice could be heard in the background of the call followed by a string of giggles which Elizabeth could only assume was from his ticking his girlfriend. ‘Hey Liz.’
‘Hey Damien.’
‘Ready for the interview today?’
‘As I’ll ever be I guess.. I mean its just for the bar down the street.’
‘You’re gonna crush it babe,’ Athena chirped enthusiastically. ‘Go in there and give em Cece from New Girl vibes.’
‘Yeah we’ll come celebrate with you after,’ Damien promised.
‘Thanks guys, I gotta go or I’ll be late,’ she replied, shrugging on her jacket as they chorused their goodbyes. Giving herself a once-over in the mirror, Elizabeth put on her most winning smile before grabbing the plate of cookies off the counter. Loudly knocking twice on the identical door from hers across the hall, she set them gently on the floor before rushing off to her interview.
-
We have to talk. Tonight 8pm.
The single text message no doubt forecasting impending doom lit up Drake’s phone screen from where he’d left it that morning on the kitchen bench top. Cursing himself for forgetting it, he’d rushed back home to pick it up on his lunch hour, only to find a plate of cookies at his doorstep. Now it and the handwritten Sorry again! note from his neighbour Elizabeth — he could tell by the spider drawing — lay forgotten to the side as he ran a hand through his hair, sighing in frustration.
Kiara was mad. Again. He’d fucked up again. Somehow. No amount of wracking his brain would do him any good now. Just when things were starting to improve, or so he thought. All he seemed to be doing was making her mad lately.
Absentmindedly, Drake shoved a cookie in his mouth before thinking better and grabbing the rest to eat on the long trek back to the office. - ‘You got the job!’ Athena wrapped her friend in a bear hug.
Elizabeth chuckled wryly, ‘Its just a bartending gig, Thee.'
‘Still! Its your first big girl job you got by yourself. No longer a debutante of the north, we’ve got a working city gal over here!’
‘Complete with a shitty boss and everything. Did you know he asked me if this is the highest neckline I own?’
Athena wrinkled her nose as they continued down the street. ‘Ew are you sure you want to work there babe? You know I could get you a job at my magazine place right? Just say the word and I’ll make it happen.’
Elizabeth was already shaking her head. ‘Thanks again but no thanks. Like you said this is my first real job that I’ve gotten myself. If I’m going to be independent, I’m gonna have to take my chances.’
‘Well you’re a trooper,’ her friend announced, linking her arm through hers. ‘Anyway, this calls for a treat. Lets go out tonight! But first can we stop by your place? I gotta pee so bad.'
-
Getting dolled up together was something Elizabeth didn’t realise she’d missed. Athena had moved to the city years ago and she was starting to think she should have done the same.
‘C’mon Liz! D and Nadia are already waiting,’ her best friend yelled from where she was scrolling through her phone on the couch.
‘I’m coming!’ she yelled back, applying that final coat of lipstick before pressing her lips together to make that perfect pout. Just as she stepped out of the bedroom, there was a knock at her door. Athena gave her a quizzical look before leaping up to answer it as she reached back into the room to grab her other earring.
‘Is Elizabeth here?’
She poked her head out to see Drake leaning against the doorframe, tie hanging loosely around his neck, offering her a half smile.
‘Oh.. Hey Drake.’ Her voice was breathy as she crossed the living room, trying to ignore Athena who was furiously mouthing something probably inappropriate from behind the door where her neighbour couldn’t see.
He handed her the plate. ‘Thanks for the cookies. Came in handy today.
Elizabeth swallowed as their fingers touched for a moment. ‘You’re welcome. I’m glad they did. So… um you done with work?’
‘Yeah. Might head out for a bit later. You look like you’re on the way out yourself.’
‘Yeah,’ she chuckled. ‘I got a new job so my best friend is taking me out to dinner.’ Why was she telling him this? Why would he care?
Drake nodded. ‘Well I’ll leave you to it.’
‘Thanks. And again I’m so sorry about the…’ Elizabeth gestured awkwardly at the fading bruise on his face.
‘Don’t worry about it,’ he called over his shoulder, retreating back into his apartment.
She’d barely closed the door, before Athena pounced on her.
'That’s him?? Thats the guy?!?'
'Thats him.'
'You hit him in the face.'
'I did.'
'I can’t believe you hit him in the face.'
'I know.’
Athena suddenly shoved her roughly. ‘You should have invited him out with us! He said he was going out a little later anyway. C’mon girl!’
‘I can’t! He has a girlfriend for starters!’
‘Who from the sounds of it is halfway out the door!’ Athena licked her lips. ‘Did you hear his accent? Soooo sexy. Must be some kind of European..’
‘Beats me,’ Elizabeth deflected.
‘Imma beat your ass if you don’t snatch him up soon,’ her best friend threatened playfully as they grabbed their bags. ‘Now come on Nadia’s already sent me seven text messages.'
-
‘Whatever it is Kiki, I’m sorry,’ Drake began even before he entered Kiara’s lavish penthouse. ‘Its not you, its me. I’ll do better I promise.’
The elegant diplomat gave him a pointed look before turning on her custom Jimmy Choo’s as she lead him further into the apartment. ‘That’s just it Drake, I don’t think you can do better.’
His brow furrowed, shoulders sagging. ‘What do you mean?’
‘You heard me,’ she replied almost nonchalantly, flipping her hair over her shoulder. ‘I just got a call from Sara Burton, Alexander McQueen’s creative director. She’s uninvited me from her fashion show next week. The same fashion show I was supposed to take Princess Marguerite of Monaco to as part of our efforts to broker a trade with her country. Do you want to know what reason Ms Burton gave me?’
She barely paused, steading herself against the mantlepiece before continuing on. ‘She told me that you were drunk at her show last week and told one of her aides that her entire collection looked better as fishing tackle than as clothes.’
Drake snorted without a hint of remorse. ‘I stand by what I said. No one on God’s good earth needs a fishnet jumpsuit. No one.’
He instantly regretted the words as Kiara’s face flushed with anger.
‘Mon Dieu! You don’t understand! You never did! This is not about the outfits, its about grace and finesse and being strategic in what you say and do. My parents warned me about you. They said you couldn’t handle the pressures of the nobility and sooner or later you’d only bring me down with you.’
He tossed aside the roses and chocolate, a belated peace offering. ‘Bring you down? Is that all I am to you Kiara? An accessory to your status? A means to an end?’
Her eyes narrowed in fury. ‘Don’t you do that! Don’t you dare twist my words like that when I’ve done nothing but make you comfortable with who I am for our entire relationship.’ She sucked in a ragged breath. ‘You think yourself above all the flattery and finery, living by your own rules but what your arrogant ass forgets that some of us make our livelihood to protect king and country this way.’ ‘
Don’t hit me what that holier-than-thou bullshit now,’ Drake interjected. ‘You know just as well as I do that shit is just a farce. Just ass-kissing and brown nosing your way to the top to get where you want to be.'
‘If that’s what you think I do, then you never knew me at all,’ Kiara declared with finality, tears shining in her eyes before she turned away from him. ‘Let’s stop fucking pretending, shall we? We’re way too different for this to work. Everyone else can tell. We’ve only been fooling ourselves for the last three years.'
‘Kiara…’ He came up behind her, so close but not touching. Was she really doing this? 'How did we get like this Kiki?’ He asked, barely daring to whisper. ‘Surely we can figure this out...'
‘We can’t.’ When she spoke, her tone confirmed what he knew all along. ‘What we had died out a long time ago.'
‘Kiara please..’ Drake could hear the desperation in his voice now. ‘Please don’t do this.’
‘It’s done, Drake. We’re done.’
‘Ki-‘
‘Please leave.’
She didn’t even turn around. Drake hesitated for a moment before obeying. In the elevator, frustration broke and he punched the walls hard enough to make the lights flicker. As soon as the bell dinged for the ground floor, he headed towards the nearest bar.
- Elizabeth was still smiling when she unlocked the door to her apartment. She had needed the dinner with her friends more than she’d realised. Now for a goodnights sleep before her first shift at the bar tomorrow...
A loud banging on her apartment door woke her up hours later, shaking her out of a deep sleep. Her bleary eyes found the clock reading 1.51am. More banging followed by someone yelling.
This is how I die. Alone in avocado pjs, strangled to death in my own bed by a lunatic who’s probably the Zodiac killer reincarnated.
Whoever it was didn’t seem to plan on stopping. She debated with herself for a moment longer before hastily reaching for her robe, turning on each light in the apartment as she passed it, grabbing a wooden spoon for good measure as she passed the kitchen. The sounds were clearer now, it almost sounded like someone was moaning in pain. As she inched closer Elizabeth was able to hear a word, a name.
'Kiara..'
Why did that name sound so familiar?
Just then her door handle started jiggling and she brandished her weapon more fiercely ready to strike. Before she had time to react, it burst open to reveal... her neighbour Drake.
Clearly drunk off his face, he stumbling into her living room, swearing as his shoulder caught against the doorframe. The impact sent him teetering precariously but somehow he still managed to keep his balance, moaning out Kiara’s name as he peeled off the henley he was wearing. Wrestling to take it for a second, is knees buckled and he sprawled face first onto her couch.
Elizabeth remained frozen and to anyone passing by must have looked quite comical, standing shock still in her pyjamas, hair in a messy bun and eyes bleary from sleep with wooden spoon raised in the air above her head. It wasn’t until Drake let out a snorting breath that she was shocked out of her stupor.
Ohmigodohmigodohmigod. What the hell just happened?
Her very attractive neighbour was on her couch, shirtless and blackout drunk at 2am.
What the hell New York??
Elizabeth did the first thing she could think of. She dialled Athena then immediately hung up.
Its freaking 2am woman. Get a grip.
Taking a deep breath, she shook her head coming to her senses that there was nothing she could do about it now. Placing a glass of water and an aspirin on the table beside Drake, she turned off all the lights and crept back to her bedroom, shutting the door for good measure. - He must have forgotten to close the damn blinds again because it felt like the sun itself was shining on the other side of his eyelids. His head was already throbbing and when he swallowed, his throat felt like sandpaper. Blinking grains of dust out of his eyes, Drake gradually came to his senses and his vision cleared to reveal the words of a graphic tee with an avocado on it, reading Hardcore.
Wait… This wasn’t his apartment!
He shot up to a sitting position, the action making him nauseous as the pounding in his head only intensified.
‘Rough night?’
A woman’s voice took him by surprise and with effort he turned to see the owner of the avocado shirt, his neighbour Elizabeth sitting on the armchair across from him...

【未定事件簿】 Tears of Themis: A Love Poem to Skadi - Zuo Ran Encounters
Translation Masterlist | Themis Event Masterlist
Encounters: Xia Yan | Zuo Ran | Mo Yi | Lu Jinghe
See under cut!
--
Mini-Story – Journey in Mutual Understanding
Part 1 – Sudden Change
Sajya Fjord
Zuo Ran: …
MC: Lawyer Zuo? Why are you here? Didn’t you go to discuss the collaboration case?
Zuo Ran: Oh… it’s nothing…
MC: …
MC: Lawyer Zuo, did something… happen with the case?
Zuo Ran: As expected, I couldn’t hide it from you… a bit of an accident did occur. But you don’t need to worry – it’s not something very serious.
MC: Really? But your expression looks really bad… How about I accompany you…
Zuo Ran: Don’t worry, there really isn’t anything – trust me.
Zuo Ran stooped slightly and tapped my head.
Zuo Ran: Give me a little more time. I will deal with it all very quickly.
MC: Okay… But if there’s anywhere that I can help, you must tell me.
Zuo Ran: If you are truly this eager to help… then stay by my side a moment longer.
Part 2 – Accepting the Difference
Zuo Ran: It’s you? What a coincidence – we meet again.
MC: Lawyer Zuo, you’re here too? Right, how is the case from before? Do you need me to…
Zuo Ran: Calm down first, don’t worry. I’ve already found the places where there are problems in the case. It will all be fine very soon.
MC: That’s great… Lawyer Zuo, exactly what problem appeared?
Zuo Ran: That contract that was submitted to the collaboration partner before had one activity in the content’s details that ran against this place’s manners and customs. Because this content was too “detailed”, the recipient before might not have noticed it.
MC: So that’s how it was… Only a detail-oriented person like Lawyer Zuo would be able to notice such a tiny problem in these kinds of minor details so quickly. As your partner, I also need to learn this kind of ability and attitude.
Zuo Ran: Alright, since you’re on vacation to relax, then don’t think about work matters for now. It’s my fault for chatting about the case with you this whole time. I also hope that when we’re together, the things we discuss aren’t just work.
Part 3 – Thank-You Gift
MC: Lawyer Zuo, was that file that was transmitted to you earlier of use?
Zuo Ran: Mhmm, thank you for your trouble.
MC: It’s no big deal. After all, this case was quite urgent, so I’m very happy to be able to help. Then, Lawyer Zuo, after this case…
Zuo Ran: There are still some details that need to be confirmed but there are no problems in general.
MC: That’s good. After this case ends, you can also rest well.
Zuo Ran: About this… how much longer will you be staying on Skadi Island?
MC: Still a few more days… what’s the matter?
Zuo Ran: That’s good. I want to properly thank you after the case ends. Don’t rush to refuse yet, I… am also doing this out of selfishness. As for what it is… you’ll know when time comes.
Part 4 – Leisurely Times
MC: Lawyer Zuo, has the case ended?
Zuo Ran: Mm, it’s all finished.
MC: That’s great! Then do you have any plans after, Lawyer Zuo? Are you planning to have fun somewhere or to check someplace out? Skadi Island’s sceneries are very beautiful.
Zuo Ran: Then do you have any plans?
MC: Me? Aside from the stuff I agreed to Yao Yu about, I don’t have any plans…
Zuo Ran: If so, after official business is finished, can I take up your time? I said before that if you had time, we could travel around together. Now might be a good opportunity.
Zuo Ran Chance Encounters
Happy Memories
Dark Night Beach
MC: Lawyer Zuo? Did something happen? Why are you staring at your phone with that expression?
Zuo Ran: It’s nothing, I’m just… looking at the weather forecast.
MC: Weather forecast?
Zuo Ran: Mm, I wanted to confirm if it would snow.
MC: Are you very concerned about whether it’ll snow?
Zuo Ran: I saw before on the geographical magazine that the Dark Night Beach with snowfall was judged as the third-placer on the list of “Scenes that are the best for making people feel happy”. It’s hard enough to come to Skadi Island for once. If it’s possible, I also want you to see this scene. But very regretfully, we are not the only ones on this beach… I’ve checked the nearby villages with beaches, but the forecasted snowfall from a few days ago… probably won’t appear.
MC: Is that so… though it’s somewhat regretful, thank you for considering these things for me, Lawyer Zuo. I already feel very happy like this, regardless if it has snowed or not.
Zuo Ran: Then… how about we walk together on this beach? Though I have no way of letting you see a scene that will make you happy… we can create memories that are only ours together.
Let’s Take a Photo
Dark Night Beach
Zuo Ran: MC? We meet again.
MC: It’s Lawyer Zuo… are you also strolling here?
Zuo Ran: Just came out to walk around and relax my mood.
MC: Same here – I feel like I just need to hear the sounds of the sea to forget all my troubles.
Zuo Ran: …
Zuo Ran: Right… do you want to take photos?
MC: Why did you ask this all of a sudden?
Zuo Ran: It’s nothing, I just felt that the seaside scenery right now is very beautiful, so I wanted to take a few photos for you.
MC: Then Lawyer Zuo, how about you straight up take pictures of these sceneries instead. This way, you’ll be able to completely save the sceneries right here and now.
Zuo Ran: Oh you… what’s important isn’t these sceneries… These sceneries will only be meaningful when recorded with you.
Trip Invitation
Sati Falls
MC: I only noticed now that there are a lot of sea birds here, at Sati Falls… I very rarely see these phenomena at other waterfalls. Sure enough, Skadi Island is very special!
Zuo Ran: Do you like this place a lot?
MC: Mm, not only is the scenery here very beautiful, but stuff like their culture and customs are also very particular.
Zuo Ran: Then how about we come here again next holiday? When time comes, it’ll just be you and me, and together, we’ll… walk through every corner of this island and spend some time that only belongs to us, alright?
Interesting Matters
City of Elves
Zuo Ran: It’s you? Uh, what are you… doing there?
MC: It’s Lawyer Zuo… I’m examining an old-fashioned recorder that I found by chance. It’s this one in front of me.
Zuo Ran: This recorder… looks very worn. It probably was left here for a long time.
MC: Yeah… what a pity. It’s very rare to see these kinds of recorders these days. If it were well-preserved… in a few years, it would be a very precious treasure.
Zuo Ran: Are you very interested in these old items?
MC: It’s not than I’m interested in them, I just sometimes like to examine and see. You can see the changes of time and generations from these old items.
Zuo Ran: …
MC: What’s the matter? Is it that… the things I’m talking about are too boring… people have said this before…
Zuo Ran: You’ve misunderstood. I don’t feel like this matter is boring – instead, I feel that I… seem to have an insufficient understanding of you. That… if you don’t mind, can you tell me more about things like your hobbies? It’s a rare opportunity, so let me get a better understanding of you.
Mysterious Wreckage
Sati Falls
MC: I never would’ve thought that there really would be such a large plane wreckage here…
Zuo Ran: Skadi Island has many volcanoes. Once it erupts, it’s very easy for it to result in plane accidents. Thus, there’s the wreckage of a plane crash here – it’s not anything strange.
MC: Although it looks like it’s been a long time since this crash. Its whole body is also filled with a strange atmosphere. What could be inside?
Zuo Ran: Do… you want to go in and see?
MC: Eh?! Lawyer Zuo, please don’t misunderstand. I just casually said it – there’s no other big meaning. This wreckage looks pretty old – considering safety, we shouldn’t go inside…
Zuo Ran: It’s no problem. If we just look near the entrance of the plane cabin, there shouldn’t be any major problems. Plus… I’m here. I’ll protect you.
Believable Matters
City of Elves
MC: The City of Elves really does have a lot of folklore… Though all the people on Skadi Island believe in these things a lot, it seems like the people here take it especially seriously.
Zuo Ran: It’s likely because this is a city where “miracles” happen a lot. In the history in this city, many miraculous phenomena have occurred here that cannot be explained by modern science. The people attribute these things to “elves” and supernatural phenomena, and they bear deep trust without a shred of doubt to these… Perhaps they also hold the hope that “miracles” will befall them.
MC: That can be considered as a very honest way of thinking. Right, Lawyer Zuo, do you believe these things? Things like “elves” and “miraculous powers”.
Zuo Ran: In the past, I didn’t believe in these. But now, I seem to be willing to believe in these.
MC: Why?
Zuo Ran: Because… a miracle has already happened before my eyes.
Movie Recommendations
Sajya Fjord
MC: Lawyer Zuo, thank you for explaining so many things about Sajya Fjord to me.
Zuo Ran: It’s nothing – as easy as lifting my hand.
MC: Lawyer Zuo, why are you so familiar with this place?
Zuo Ran: I had a road trip movie that I liked very much before. This was the shooting location. So back then, I went out of my way to find out about it.
MC: Lawyer Zuo, you actually like to see road trip movies? I thought you only watched sci-fi or literature and art movies.
Zuo Ran: Though I prefer these two movie genres, but this doesn’t mean I only watch these genres. As long as it is an excellent work, I will still watch and research it.
MC: Then, Lawyer Zuo, could you recommend some good movies to me? I just happen to be short on shows recently.
Zuo Ran: Sure.
Unachievable Matters
Sajya Fjord
MC: Lawyer Zuo, you’re amazing – you were actually able to catch such a large brown trout! The old man who just invited us to go fishing has also was praising you more.
Zuo Ran: It’s nothing – I just got lucky.
MC: No no no, luck is a part of it, and raw ability is also a part of it. You don’t need to be modest. In my eyes, you’re completely all-capable.
Zuo Ran: I am not all-capable – at least, there is one thing that I have not been able to achieve what I desired.
MC: ???
Zuo Ran: It’s nothing. You… will know in the future.
Daily Coffee
Vikja Capital
MC: This coffee shop’s “Vikja Capital” special edition coffee flavour really is unforgettable… and I don’t know if I’kk have a chance to drink this in the future…
Zuo Ran: Do you like this flavour a lot?
MC: Mhmm. Plus, I don’t know if it’s my misconception, but I keep feeling like this coffee’s invigorating effects are very prominent…
Zuo Ran: I’ve bought some extra of this coffee, and I’m preparing to bring it back to the law firm. If you want to drink it… you can come find me. I can prepare it every day for you to drink.
Dessert Education
Vikja Capital
MC: (It’s too difficult. This open-air dessert shop’s free course on creating desserts is too hard… It feels like my hands are already no longer mine…)
Zuo Ran: Are you alright?
MC: I’m fine. Lawyer Zuo, you can focus on yours, no need to concern yourself with me.
Zuo Ran: …
Zuo Ran: Oh you… if you feel that it’s hard, you can directly tell me. We can think of methods together. I’m right beside you – rely on me a little more.

Essential Avengers: Avengers #221: ... New Blood!
July, 1982
A semi-famous somewhat imitated cover!
Can you guess ahead of time which two will be joining the Avengers?
No cheating.
Actually, what’s funny is that I can imagine a Young Bendis looking at this cover, seeing Luke Cage, Spider-Man, and Wolverine all in a row like that and whispering to himself ‘one day... one day...’
Spider-Woman is even on this! This is almost the roster meme that Bendis would have selected his team out of.
Just as soon as he cleared the way by killing off Ant-Man and Hawkeye.
Anyway, I like the cute touch that there’s just a completely blank square for Sue Storm. And is she really still going by Invisible Girl at this point?
-google- Ah, Invisible Woman is still a few years off.
And at risk of spoiling, I like the cover pretending that Rom (Space Knight) could feasibly join the Avengers. Although that would have made a hilarious mess when the rights lapsed. A whole swathe of Avengers comics unavailable.
So, where are we at?
Last times on Avengers: Captain America decided that the Avengers had become too unwieldy. They’d settled into a filler rut and Cap wanted them to be lean and mean.
So the old order changeith’d! And Moondragon meddled, causing half of the old team to quit. But Cap got his lean team of himself, Thor, Iron Man, Wasp, Yellowjacket, and Tigra.
And then Yellowjacket Hank Pym had an ‘attempted murder out of insecurity’ breakdown and tried to murder his friends and was a very bad husband to Wasp as well.
So Yellowjacket was out and Wasp took some personal time.
It was just Cap, Thor, Iron Man, and Tigra. And then Tigra quit.
Wasp rejoined but the trim team of six had become anemic at four and after some space mishaps, its finally time to try to do something about that.
As Iron Man declares in title-of-the-issue font they need some ... NEW BLOOD!
And Wasp declares ‘yes we all know that already we’ve just been putting it off.’
(And they finally got the big meeting table back from the cleaners or wherever its been. Thank goodness)
But the question that Chairperson Wasp poses the team is should they re-induct some ex-members or go looking for some truly new blood?
Thor is brooding on the recent events, where Moondragon manipulated the Avengers previous roster shakeup and later when Moondragon took over a planet and got Thor to fight his friends.
So Thor’s point, by way of dwelling, is that they should be careful with who they choose.
Thor: “Thus can no action, no thought made by any of us in the last weeks be truly, absolutely claimed as our own. Not even... mine.”
There we go. There’s that good Moondragon induced paranoia I was hoping for.
And character wise, I do like that there’s fallout from the Ba-Bani misadventure. Whether being forced to fight his friends or being made to fall in love with Moondragon or being convinced to side with her plan to bring mandatory peace to the universe. Thor has been affected by what happened.
Cap suggests that they clear the slate and just judge potential members on their current qualifications.
So what qualifications should potential Avengers have?
Captain America: “Compatibility. Someone who can work in a team.”
Iron Man: “And technical expertise. Perhaps someone good with weaponry.”
Thor: “We’ve enough strength, methinks. But courage is important. Aye, and a noble heart.”
Wasp: “Well, I know exactly what this group needs. More girls!”
Good suggestions. All good suggestions. But very good suggestion from Wasp.
I know that two women on one team is the low bar that Avengers tends to reach but you know what’s worse? One women on one team. And you know what’s better? Three.
Think about it.
The meeting gets cut short because Jan has to go do Jan things like show off fashion at the Tavern on the Green but she tells the others to figure out who they’d like as new Avengers and then they’ll all decide at their meeting next week.
As the Avengers all head off, Captain America mentions to Iron Man that hey remember how Hawkeye used to be an Avenger all the time? Weren’t those good times? He worked well on the team, was real into being an Avenger.
Iron Man agrees that sure is a Thought but flies off thinking more about Jan’s suggestion to have more women on the team, albeit probably for less than pure reasons.
Thor meanwhile doesn’t have anywhere to be so sits down in the sitting room and reads a Time magazine.
Jarvis brings Thor some mead and Thor asks who Jarvis would enlist for the Avengers if Jarvis was given the choice.
Jarvis is surprised to be asked but does his best to speak off the cuff.
Jarvis: “Why, I - I really hadn’t given it much thought! But since you ask, I feel that some of the best Avengers have started as the most unlikely candidates. For example, those with strongly individual, independent natures seem to have worked out surprisingly well.”
You’re a good guy, Jarvis.
And you’ve got a good point. Since the Avengers were pretty much everyone who wasn’t on a team jammed onto a team together, the Avengers kind of have as foundation strongly individual independent superheroes managing to do a teamwork anyway.
And Thor just so happens to be reading the Time magazine that has a picture of Spider-Man on the front (along with “Friend or Menace?”) and thinks huh individual and independent??
Oh boy!
Spider-Man going to be offered a spot on the Avengers? Is it 2005 already?
Goofs aside, this is an interesting callback maybe.
All the way back in Amazing Spider-Man Annual #3 (November, 1966) which I didn’t cover but probably should have if this was a more comprehensive Avengers blog but then I may have died under the enormity of the task.
Uh, that sentence got away from me.
Anyway, in that Spider-Man Annual, the Avengers debate whether to recruit Spider-Man for their team. Thor is the one there to find Spider-Man and bring him to the mansion. The Avengers decide to test him and (after Spider-Man tries to beat up the entire team because that’s what Spider-Man thinks proving himself is) they send him to bring the Hulk back with him.
He finds the Hulk and fights the Hulk but Hulk turns back to Bruce Banner and Spider-Man feels bad for Bruce and doesn’t want to turn him over to the Avengers (not knowing that they want to help Hulk). So he comes back and says welp couldn’t find him guess I’m not Avengers material byyyyyye.
The other Avengers go huh I guess he wasn’t Avengers material but Thor seemed to suspect what had really happened.
So my rambling point is that its appropriate that Thor again thinks to recruit Spider-Man for the Avengers because of that previous story.
Later in the day, Iron Man calls Captain America.
Although as Cap points out they know each other’s civilian name now so why be formal?
Iron Man: “Captain America? This is Iron Man.”
Captain America: “Hey, Tony, let’s make it ‘Steve,’ okay? I’m off duty.”
So Tony “Iron Man” Stark has managed to stop thinking about more woman on the Avengers and has actually started to think about having Hawkeye back on the Avengers and has to admit, it sounds good to him!
So Captain Steve says they should go together tomorrow and see what Hawkeye thinks.
This is a nice sequence.
Its nice to see how the two learning each other’s identity plays out like this. Tony trying to stick to how they’ve known each other and Steve making a not subtle overture for them to become more familiar.
This is probably good shipping fodder, I realize!
But it is also good friendshipping fodder. It can be both.
Elsewhere and meanwhile, at the Van Dyne residence, Janet puts her own recruitment drive into... drive?
She’s invited every super-heroine in the country she can think of to brunch but she has no idea how to get a hold of She-Hulk.
Not even her state of the art computer system can find her! Granted, the state of the art computer system is for analyzing fashion forecasts and not news reports about She-Hulk sightings.
So Jan decides that if you want a She-Hulk you’ve got to spend a little green.
She has her assistant take out a bunch of full-page ads in all of the major west coast newspapers. And heck, buy a bunch of commercial time too!
Jan is going to do some I Want You (to Join the Avengers) ads!
She is ludicrously wealthy.
I went and checked and her original inheritance was ‘only’ three million dollars but the way that she throws around money I’m pretty sure she has managed to get some lucrative investments. That or she’s just super good at being a fashionista.
Granted, blowing a bunch of money for a chance to have brunch with She-Hulk is a pretty good reason to blow a bunch of money.
Later, as twilight comes, Thor is flying around Central Park because he has no idea how to find Spider-Man but hears that he’s often around “the meadow-lands called Central Park” and happens upon three goofuses who just robbed a pawnshop.
These goofuses are such goofuses that one of them is wearing groucho glasses as a disguise. Another one is wearing a clown mask.
Which, like a moth to fire, aggros Spider-Man just to mock the guy.
I’m pretty sure rather than flying around aimlessly, the best way to find Spider-Man is to create the perfect quip opportunity.
A clown: “I’m gonna kiss every dime o’ my share -- just as soon as we get to the hideout so’s I can take off this stupid mask!”
Spider-Man, suddenly: “Aw, c’mon, Bunky, leave it on! I’ve always wanted to bust a bozo who looks like a bozo!”
Groucho: “S-s-spider-Man!”
S-s-spider-Man: “But enough of this clowning! Wanna give up?”
Dangit, Peter. Good wordplay.
But before can catch these thieves just like flies, down came the rain and washed the spider out.
A sudden, inexplicable (cough cough Thor) localized storm tosses around the thieves until they surrender.
After the police lead away the goofus thieves, Spider-Man comes dripping wet and with a bone to pick.
Spider-Man: “Do you have any idea what it’s like running around in wet tights?”
Thor is like sorry bro but I’ve come to talk so Spider-Man agrees but they’ll need to go off somewhere private because the press is honing in on him to ask him bonkers questions about whether he came in a flying saucer.
I think they’re thinking of a certain emissary of hell.
That darn press!
Spider-Man and Thor relocate to a high rooftop for their talk.
Spider-Man: “Now, Goldilocks, what’s your beef?”
Thor: “Thy protective demeanor is unneeded, my friend. I have no ‘beef’ -- only a proposal. The Avengers are seeking new members, and I wouldst offer thee such position.”
Spider-Man: “You... Thor... want me as an Avenger?
Spider-Man is still not sure if it would work out (reflecting on Spider-Man Annual #3) but he’s also really flattered by the offer. And presumably how the offer wasn’t accompanied by “BUT FIRST YOU MUST PASS OUR TEST!”
So he can’t just accept the offer off-hand but he’s definitely going to think about it.
Even if you don’t join the team, even just being considered is an honor.
The twilight turns into night turns into day, and Cap and Iron Man show up in Hawkeye’s place of business to bug him.
Don’t know if you remember but Hawkeye has a cushy job as head of security for Cross Technological Enterprises. And he actually does take the job seriously which is why he’s a little concerned, at least for his professional pride, that Cap and Iron Man got past his guards.
Cap: “Avengers priority -- never leave home without it. In fact, we’ve come to offer it to you.”
Smooth. Smooth, Cap.
Although I do like that they can just march up to the guards of this company and go ‘hey let us in we’re avengers’ and its not even a ‘ok i’ll clear it with head of security hawkeye’ its ‘yeah sure go right in and do you want any paperclips?’
Anyway, Hawkeye has his pride so he tells Cap not to expect him to come crawling back after the Avengers booted him out (actually Gyrich because Gyrich wanted the Avengers to have some ding dang diversity. Its weirdly the least assholeish thing he’s ever done although he approached it very much in an asshole way).
Point being, they kicked Hawkeye out and he has a new super cool job now.
Iron Man takes this show of wounded pride in wounded stride, just asking that Hawkeye consider it and let them know when he makes a decision.
But Hawkeye doubts he’ll decide to come back to the Avengers because he’s got a good thing in this steady, respectable paying job which comes with job security and respect!
And then, suddenly struck by the realization that he, Hawkeye, is turning down a drama implosion like the Avengers to do the adult thing?? Hawkeye doesn’t like what he’s become.
And he stares in horror at the trappings of power and respectability. The sex and the drugs.
Or a Playboy magazine and a personalized coffee cup, at least.
And he decides to give Iron Man his answer right then and there.
Which, of course, involves shooting arrows. This is Hawkeye we’re talking about.
What’s amazing is that we’ll learn later this issue that he’s going to keep his security job and do Avengers on top of that (and in fairness most of the Avengers don’t have Avengers as their only thing). But he just shot an arrow through a glass door in his place of employment.
But you don’t hire Hawkeye if you don’t expect that kind of thing so I can see why it wouldn’t impact his job.
So that’s Hawkeye as a YES and Spider-Man as a ‘I’ll get back to you.’ And as the weekend arrives, it’s time for Janet van Dyne’s superheroine brunch.
And on the hill above the van Dyne house, its our old pal Fabian Stankowicz.
Remember? The Mechano-Marauder? Built a robot suit to beat up the Avengers, none of them took him that seriously? Iron Man beat him up solo without trying very hard and then got angry about Hank Pym?
Anyway, he’s back, somehow, and he’s salty about the less than dignified experience he had in issue 217. But this time, he has a new plan!
Fabian Stankowicz: “They laughed at me! Mocked me! But I’ll show the Avengers that the Mechano-Marauder is not to be toyed with! I’ll attack their weakest member when the others aren’t around! She’ll be helpless! *Heh-heh-heh*”
Well. Good luck with that, my dude.
Sue Storm-Richards, the Invisible Girl, arrives and Jan introduces her to the other prospective Avengers: Dazzler, Spider-Woman, and Black Widow.
All good candidates, really.
Especially Dazzler.
Well, Beast left and Tigra left so somebody needs to be the new funny person.
Apparently, Spider-Woman doesn’t like puns because she immediately starts getting catty with Dazzler.
Spider-Woman: “Nice going, Blaire! You’re showing all the polish and poise of a real pro!”
Dazzler: “Oh? And I suppose crawling on walls like some yucky insect is ‘professional’?”
Spider-Woman: “I sting, too”
I guess, they have some history in Dazzler’s own book that didn’t go over well. Black Widow has to lean over and tell them to cut the shit out for Jan’s sake.
But then the last invited guest shows up.
ITS A SHE-HULK!
She saw the ads and she’s come for the free food!
Relatable.
Outside, Jan’s chauffeur Mr. Carrothers sits on the limo taking a smoke break and reflecting how good he has it working for the Wasp. Good pay, casual hours. The most he can complain about is that it gets a little boring sometimes.
That’s probably tempting fate because the All-New All-Different Mechano-Marauder stomps up to the house. Remember how Fabian threw the limo last time? Mr. Carrothers remembers.
He panics and runs into the house and tries to warn the assembled heroes.
And yet.
They didn’t really leap to action, huh? I mean, I get it. Brunch.
Even after the robot fist has punched through Wasp’s frankly ludicrous window and kidnapped Dazzler, Wasp is more annoyed than anything.
Wasp: “Fabian Stankowicz, you get that thing out of my living room!”
And then has to explain to her guests that Fabian is some chump that Iron Man beat up and that he wants to make a name for himself by defeating the Avengers. And Sue is like ah yes I understand completely.
But chump or not, Black Widow decides that they should rescue Dazzler.
Dazzler: “I don’t think I need saving, folks! This guy’s just holding, not squeezing!”
And so much for the brunch bunch taking this any amount of serious.
Sue just puts up a quick invisible dome to keep Fabian from getting to the rest of them which the Mechano-Marauder instantly bonks into and bangs on impotently demanding that they let him in.
Careful, Fabian.
You’re memeing yourself.
Dazzler saves herself when she gets tired of being carried around. She does her Dazzler thing with the bright pulse of light, blinding Fabian.
He drops Dazzler but she’s caught by She-Hulk.
The blinded Mechano-Marauder drives around blindly, thinking “These women aren’t even Avengers! They can’t beat me!”
Alas, Dazzler decides the same decision she decided in #211, that she’s a singer, not a fighter.
And Sue also decides to head off, saying that she’s too busy with the Fantastic Four anyway.
Shame.
But can we talk about the sheer audacity that Jan had of trying to poach Sue from the Fantastic Four to the Avengers? The nerve! The verve!
So that’s two of her candidates declining but that still leaves Spider-Woman, Black Widow, and She-Hulk.
And unfortunately for Mechano-Marauder, the first two are the two that have decided to kick his ass a little for entertainment reasons.
Spider-Woman’s venom blast damages one of the giant robot fists and Black Widow swings around Hoth-style and trips the Mechano-Marauder into the ornamental pond.
Alas, after literally dunking a giant robot into a pond, both Spider-Woman and Black Widow turn down the offer to join the Avengers.
Black Widow has private business that are keeping her busy. And Spider-Woman doesn’t even offer an excuse.
In fairness, she has her own solo book over in California and that’s a heck of a commute. I’m actually impressed that she came all this way for brunch.
Fabian is fed up with being treated as an after-thought in his own fight scene and bursts out of the pond, yelling how he’s going to destroy them all!
All.... uh, two that’s left at this point. Yup, he sure is going to destroy all two of them.
She-Hulk has been fairly low-key this whole story, especially for She-Hulk. I’m pretty sure she came to the brunch just for the food and she hasn’t reacted much to Fabian, even when the others were. She caught Dazzler but she hasn’t had much to say since arriving. She’s mostly been standing with her hands on her hips, watching things play out.
But I guess she’s gotten tired of Fabian. Or maybe it falls to her as the last guest.
She tells him to shut up and breaks his robot suit with one punch.
Fabian has one last trick up his Mechano-Marauder sleeve but its a dumb one.
His ejector seat is actually a backup robot suit. Annnd, its so heavy that it sinks into the ground. Trapping him.
Good job, Fabian.
She-Hulk goes to give him one more punch but Wasp stops her. Because she wants a shot at him.
And wow! What a shot!
At full not small size she crosses the streams to focus her bio-power stings into one concentrated beam and blows a hole in Fabian’s escape suit.
I’ve talked before about how Wasp’s pew pew stings have seemingly gotten souped up under Shooter and I think this is another good example. I mean, she’s not blowing up a house but combining the blasts to do precision boring is another cool application we haven’t seen before.
Anyway, now Wasp goes teeny and flies into the hole she made and up into the helmet to blast Fabian in the face. So hard his helmet flies off.
Wasp: “That’ll teach ‘im for ruining my party!”
And that’s that for brunch.
Days later, Jarvis calls the State Department to request official clearance for two new members.
And we see part of the process of that. Interesting if you’re interested in the logistics of an officially recognized superhero team.
I guess what’s interesting is that Henry Peter Gyrich is still part of the process.
You’d think he’d have been replaced or something after the Avengers very publicly embarrassed him and got emancipated from him. I guess he keeps doing the necessary liaison stuff without ever talking to them.
The requests for the two new members cross Gyrich’s desk and he takes it to the White House where the request gets signed by Ronald Reagan.
(The two new members are Hawkeye and She-Hulk by the by. We see it on the paperwork. Guess Spider-Man is still thinking it over.)
Anyway, I guess its interesting that new Avengers are a matter that goes all the way up to the president.
God, I’m glad that for the modern team, Cap told the US government to fuck off because I don’t want to even think about that still being a thing.
The next day after the paperwork is signed, Hawkeye is on his way to Avengers Mansion in a cab. He’s reading a Time magazine about the change in the Avengers’ roster and reflecting that it’ll be hard to hold down two jobs but worth it because he’s missed the adventure.
Check out the Time magazine though.
The cover of this comic book issue is in-universe the cover of Time magazine! That’s neat.
But Hawkeye’s cab is suddenly cut off by a pink Cadillac.
And Hawkeye being Hawkeye doesn’t just grumble and go about his day. He commits assault. Because this is Hawkeye.
The guy that Cap and Iron Man wanted back for being a good team-player.
So he gets out of the cab and shoots the pink Cadillac with an EMP arrow that fries the car’s electrical system.
Really abusing that Avengers Priority Status already, huh, Hawkeye?
The one mistake he made is that the pink Cadillac belongs to She-Hulk. She in fact earned it by doing a car commercial for Wacky Willie’s Wheels-And-Deals so you might imagine she’s fond of it.
So she picks up the cab with Hawkeye in it and leans it against a lightpole.
And then she picks up the Cadillac on her shoulder and walks off with it.
She-Hulk knows how to make a lasting impression, I’ll say that.
But soon after he gets down from the taxi and stops in at an ER to make sure he’s not concussed, Hawkeye arrives at Avengers Mansion to rejoin the team.
Hawkeye: “Okay, folks, life can go on -- Hawkeye’s here!”
Iron Man: “And it’s about time! We were starting to get worried. What happened?”
Hawkeye: “Oh, nothin’ much -- not ‘til some freaky Amazon tried to play dominoes with my taxi!”
She-Hulk, lurking silhouetted by the window: “‘Amazon’, eh? I don’t suppose it could have been -- a green Amazon?”
That is a powerful energy you have there, She-Hulk. Powerful energy and a power move in a power suit.
And that’s how Hawkeye’s day was ruined. Also how the two new additions to the team start with bad blood.
Conflict! We gotta have it!
Wasp: “Hawkeye, She-Hulk. I’d like to officially welcome you both. From now on -- you’re one of us. We’re one of you. And we’re all -- THE AVENGERS!”
Jan’s trying a new thing where she kisses every new member. And they both have to bend down a little for her.
Also, another new Wasp costume! Wasp gonna Wasp!
This is another good, light-hearted decompression issue. The Moondragon two-parter had some yuks but also mind-control sex and Drax’s brain melting. So this time Wasp throws a brunch and Cap and Iron Man help Hawkeye escape the drudgery of an adult job.
There’s a lot of what could have been with Wasp’s guest list. What if she could convince Sue Storm to take a break from the Fantastic Four to try being on the Avengers.
She’ll join later, in the Worst Roster but she’ll join with Reed. I’m thinking more of a thing where Sue gets some time away from the family. I don’t think it could last long and it would need the Avengers and FF writer to be on the same page but I think it could be interesting - Sue getting to be on a team where she doesn’t have to be the adult in the room and doesn’t have to work alongside the family.
It’s a similar reason to why I’d like to see adult Cyclops join the Avengers. He’s so tied in with X-stuff and being the leader of X-stuff that I want to take him out of that context and see a new side of him.
Spider-Woman and Black Widow also could have been interesting. They’ll both become Avengers later. I don’t know that Dazzler ever did and she presents interesting opportunities.
The Avengers have had Wonder Man who was also trying to break into acting while being an Avenger. So Dazzler trying to pursue her singing career might just be a retread of that but what if she were more successful and was a celebrity on the team.
The Avengers kind of are celebrities but I think it’d be a different feel if they had a famous (disco) singer on the team.
Interesting stuff (for me) to think about, anyway.
Something else to talk about is the creative credits. Jim Shooter is credited for plotting but Dave Michelinie as writer. And looking ahead, Shooter is not going to be the solo writer again in the near future.
I think we’re getting to the point where Shooter’s going to be too busy with EIC duties to keep up writing the Avengers. He’s going to get plotting credits for a few more issues, probably loose threads he’s handing to other writers.
So the second Shooter run is going to end soon. Shame. Very much a shame. It wasn’t a very long run but he put a lot of energy and humor into the book.
Next time: Egghead’s back and he’s bringing a new Masters of Evil. Wow, it’s been a while since we’ve had them and they’re supposed to be the Avengers’ evil opposite team.
And Egghead is the not very impressive criminal mastermind who couldn’t beat Hank Pym so instead framed him for crime. Hopefully the new Masters rise above that level of menace.
Follow @essential-avengers because I’m bringing you the She-Hulk content you crave. I assume. I took a poll and one out of one person said ‘this is the She-Hulk content I crave’ and I extrapolated from that. Also you should like and reblog because She-Hulk would want you to.

THE KING AND QUEEN OF AMESTRIS – AN EXCLUSIVE LOOK INTO THE WEDDING OF THE YEAR
by Violet Whittaker and Laura Richter for PRIMA Magazine (photographs supplied by Wolffe Photography)
“We never thought this day would happen.” It’s the event Amestris has been waiting for with feverish anticipation – the wedding of Führer Roy Mustang to Lieutenant-Colonel Riza Hawkeye. Violet Whittaker and Laura Richter follow the pair on their wedding day and gain some insight into the private lives of the most talked-about people in the country.
It is a new experience for the leader of the nation, after a frantic year of picking up the mantle left in his wake by a country transformed almost overnight into a democracy. Nobody could say that the transition, led by the former Führer President, George Grumman, was not without its issues. But even as then-General Roy Mustang was sworn in after a historical vote that saw the Amestrian public having a say in their future for the very first time, nobody could have expected this new presidency to usher in such a feeling of hope and anticipation for what lies ahead. Mustang’s views, well-articulated from his campaign and debates, resonated deeply with the country – resulting in a landslide victory that proved the man and his vision for the future were unparalleled.
But it seems he’s met his match in his bride, the woman who has been one step behind him for almost his entire career in the military and politics. Riza Hawkeye, is a force to be reckoned with in her own right, with a much-decorated military career spanning back to her tender years as a teenager. An ever-present shadow in the background of many a press photo, Lieutenant-Colonel Hawkeye oversees her fiancé’s security detail – a job, she admits, that never seems to stop even when she’s off the clock.
On a quiet Thursday morning, the craggy, snow-dusted tops of the Cremil Ranges provide an unforgettable backdrop to today’s event. The blushing bride and groom are radiant since tying the knot in a gorgeous, relaxed and deeply personal ceremony overlooking Lake Mély, the place where they became engaged just over a year ago. It’s a sentimental moment to reflect on their romantic – and emotional – exchange of vows.
“When I saw her for the first time I choked up a bit,” the Führer confesses to PRIMA, never taking eyes off the now First Lady. “I was blown away. I knew I would be, but more so than I thought. She was beautiful.”
There is no pomp, no circumstance and none of the stiff formalities one might expect with such a high-profile wedding. Instead, it is a ceremony filled with laughter and joy, influenced by the couple’s own down-to-earth, understated and old-fashioned romance.
Flanked by his groomsmen, a beaming Roy is positioned under an arch that was created especially for this event. The groom waits patiently as the guests take their seats. But nerves that never made themselves known on the political ground seem to take over Roy, looking exceptionally clean-cut in his Mikhail Abel suit, keeps sneaking glances at the point where Riza will emerge.
The groom has spent the morning with his old military buddies at a friend’s house in the idyllic town of Lyford, East Province, while Riza, 32, gets ready with her small contingency of bridesmaids at the nearby Watkin Lodge, where the reception will be held afterwards. In high spirits, she manages to laugh about the less-than-favourable weather forecast as the radio plays in the background. Between each song, you can hear the messages of congratulations from the public being passed along by the radio hosts.
“We’re unbelievably humbled by all the support,” she says, fiddling with her earrings – which are, in a nod to tradition, her ‘something old’. Her veil has been borrowed from her maid of honour, a modest piece with delicate lacing detailing the edges. Her new wedding dress follows in a similar fashion – a simplistic A-line design that allows the bride’s beauty to shine through. The high neck and long sleeves are a choice that will undoubtedly be imitated by other brides, despite her protests that she is nothing of a ‘fashion icon’. Her simple, uncluttered approach has quickly made an impression with the public, with garments being sold out within days after she’s pictured wearing them.
However, Riza admits that she found herself a little stumped by the ‘something blue’.
“Honestly, I should’ve just worn the dress uniform – that would’ve covered it nicely.” The pragmatism is a refreshing change that reflects not only on Riza’s character, but the overall direction in which the Mustang’s wish to guide the country towards. In the end, her bouquet has been threaded with forget-me-nots, with bright yellow splashes of coronella and pink peonies.
Before long, cars are arriving, and last-minute adjustments are being made before the bridal party sets off for Lake Mély. The freshly-woven crown of clover is the last accessory to be added, pinned into her hair with care.
As he sees his bride finally appear, Roy’s eyes light up and that familiar, dazzling grin plays across his face – though this time it is a lot softer and meant for only his bride. Guests beam, and in some cases, shed tears as Riza walks past. But the real waterworks come out when their vows are spoken, small speeches that can only scrape the surface of a relationship that has gone back decades. There is large whooping from the guests when Roy calls Riza ‘his queen’, and similar cheering when Riza takes a moment to compose herself mid-speech, blinking furiously and promising in no uncertain terms that she will follow him anywhere.
“It’s been a long time since I’ve felt butterflies in my stomach,” Riza tells after the ceremony, smoothing down the silk of her dress. “But it wasn’t nervousness. Why would it be?” Here, she shoots a rare smile to her new husband. “It’s like you’ve been imagining this insurmountable obstacle and then you actually see it and realise it’s not as bad as you thought. I remember seeing you standing there and all I could think was – ‘oh, there you are. I’ve been waiting for you’.”
Both openly admit that marriage was never on the cards for them originally – with their positions as superior and subordinate for so long during their careers in the military, working together meant that any feelings the couple had for one another had to be buried deep, and never explored. “To say that there was a day when I didn’t love Riza Hawkeye, and then a day where I did is completely wrong,” Roy says. “Ever since I met her, I knew she would be a person who would have a monumental impact on my life. But we both knew that there were more important things to do than complain about where our choices left us.”
The two of them share a long and complicated history, most notably marred by the Ishvallan Civil War. Both served during the conflict, and the pair have always remained tight-lipped about their experiences there. But the choice to share their wedding with the public was not an easy one to make.
“We appreciated that there was a lot of interest,” Roy says diplomatically. “And we wanted to acknowledge the widespread support we’ve received following the announcement of our engagement.”
The following reception is rumoured to be legendary, but strictly a private affair. For the guests invited, it is sure to be a party filled with plenty of laughs and stories (both inspiring and embarrassing) about the couple. For the rest of us? Perhaps a reminder that love can be found and expressed in unassuming ways, and that you don’t need big flashy displays to reflect the years of quiet devotion that all of us can only dream of one day having.
The entire team at PRIMA Magazine wishes the newlyweds all the best in their new marriage.

Industry Research (1)
1. Industry Research - Identify your sector. Try and narrow this down as much as possible. Outcome: Job Title. Job Role.
To begin my industry research, I needed to find out which sector best suited my current skillset and what skills are needed in the role with some. The sector I am interested in is Art & Design. Despite knowing this, I was unsure as to which job role specifically suited my interests. I figured the best way to figure this out was to partake in the National Careers Service online Skills assessment quiz.
Above are my results from the skills quiz. Unfortunately, this did not give me any additional information (as to what job specifically), but did somewhat confirm to me that I am indeed a creative. I have always been a creative person (having studied art in formal education for 6 years), but perhaps if I had taken this quiz before I first went off to uni (to study marketing in 2017) I could have saved myself the struggle of figuring out marketing was not for me.
Original Interest
At first I thought I was interested in animation, but after completing my first year of BSc Creative Media Technologies (2019), I came to the realisation that -despite thoroughly enjoying watching cartoons- I had no desire to create them. During the summer of 2019 I began experimenting with Digital illustration.
Above is the first ever Digital illustration piece that I created. I began doing Digital illustration on a freelance basis, selling digital portraits and other designs to the best of my ability. At first I thought this was just a fun little hobby, I was completely unaware that I could make a career out of doing so. This was until I began studying this module (DIGIT), where I came to the realisation my drawings fell under the job role illustrator.
Job Profile/Role
Firstly, I would like to define what exactly an illustrator does. According to the national careers service and Prospects.co.uk :
“Illustrators are commissioned to create still drawings and images to communicate a story, message or idea, which are then used in advertisements, books, magazines, packaging, greeting cards and newspapers”
Types of illustrators
I have learnt so far that Work is predominantly freelance and most illustrators are indeed self-employed. Areas of work include:
advertising - posters, storyboards, press
publishing - books
corporate work - brochures, catalogues
editorial - magazines, newspapers and comics
fashion - forecasting
merchandising - greetings cards, calendars, t-shirts and ceramics
multimedia - TV, film, computer games, websites, apps and animation.
This breakdown gave me a little more clarity, and after viewing my current body of work, I came to the realisation that my current portfolio fits into the following; Editorials, Advertising and Merchandising.
There are further, more detailed breakdowns of each subsection on Careerexplorer.com
Salary
From what I have gathered, Illustrators typically work on a freelance basis -which makes it harder for figures on their salaries to be estimated. All the websites I searched for salary stats on gave me different estimations, but I suppose this was to be expected.
Despite this, here is the salary estimate according to:
PROSPECTS.co.uk
Starting salaries for illustrators are in the region of £18,000 to £20,000. In London, starting salaries are higher - around £23,000.
As an experienced illustrator with several years' experience, you may earn £20,000 to £30,000 a year.
Well-established illustrators may earn up to £40,000 or more.
NATIONAL CAREERS ADVISOR
The creative industries has made a scale on how the creative business will be involved in a five year growth strategy. (link)
The creative industries having increased in 2018, where 16% of al the UK jobs were DCMS jobs, this gives the creative industries the most jobs.

How to become an illustrator
There are many different avenues to becoming an illustrator. Research shows that due to the fact that most creative careers are talent based, a formal education is encouraged -but not needed. Your portfolio will speak loader than your qualifications. Having said this, I found three possible ways to get into the profession. A Degree, An apprenticeship as well as applying directly.
Qualifications
Despite mentioning above that a university degree is not compulsory in becoming an illustrator, I found that the following subjects could possibly increase the chances of success in illustration:
fashion, fine art, graphic design and illustration, printmaking, visual art.
Despite the fact that I am not directly taken any one of these degrees, I believe that Creative Media Technologies (my current course) is going to be very helpful to me, as we dabble in different art forms from this list (graphic design, illustration, visual art etc).
Skills
In order to embark on a career as an illustrator, you need:
The ability to market your skills, professionalism, imagination, knowledge of computer-aided design (CAD) techniques and printing processes, including computer graphics and research skills.

HOW TO GET APPROVED
Picking one out of many fashion jobs generally is an overwhelming challenge. There are several different opportunities in the fashion industry that you might not be sure which one is best for you. With the high demand for fashion jobs, you need to be sure of what it is that you want to do so you can get started on pursuing your dream in this competitive industry. Below you will find descriptions for several fashion jobs and, subsequently, be one step closer to establishing your career in the fashion industry.
1. Fashion Designer
Thanks to shows like Project Runway, there are many people whose curiosity has been rose towards the fashion industry, exclusively, fashion design. A career as a fashion designer seems extravagant and rewarding but it takes a whole lot of work. A fashion designer must be well-informed of the latest trends (and sometimes even be ahead of them) and have the creativity to conceptualize new designs. A fashion designer creates sketches, whether by hand or with computer-aided design (CAD) software, of their designs and must be familiar with fabrics and materials in order to create samples that show what the final product would look like. As a fashion designer you can specialize in clothing design, footwear or accessories. Fashion jobs like that of a fashion designer are prolonged with grueling hours of intensive work and lots of traveling if you want to promote your designs. Fashion designers work under pressure to meet deadlines and make an impression on fashion buyers and other potential clients. As a fashion designer you would need not only talent and creativity but also thick skin and dedication.
2. Fashion Merchandising
Fashion jobs in merchandising can be very challenging. A fashion merchandiser must know what consumers really want, how to present it to them, what they want to pay for it and how to lure them to purchase. A fashion merchandiser is not just an expert in fashion but must also have strong business, financial and advertising skills. As a fashion designer you might find yourself creating budgets, tracking profits and losses, tracking inventory, developing marketing strategies and even putting together creative visual displays to draw in consumers. It's a career that entails many different roles but also has many opportunities to grow and advance in.
3. Fashion Buyer
Fashion buyers are among the most crucial people for brands and companies. They must have good communication skills, be aggressive, organized and driven. As a fashion buyer you work hand in hand with designers, merchandisers and other key people to select what pieces to present to consumers and ensure that best-sellers are continually available. Buyers must be mindful of both current and future trends so they can make the right choices of clothing, shoes, accessories, etc. to ensure high profits. Working with suppliers to negotiate prices suggests that a fashion buyer must have good interpersonal skills, be educated in market costs and also in consumer demands. Fashion buyers must be ready to work under pressure, travel and research and analyze in order to make practical decisions on what products to offer their target customer base.
4. Fashion Director
Fashion directors, also known as creative directors or fashion coordinators, are in charge of the image and look of a store, magazine or a fashion house. They are accountable for that first impression given when people look at ad campaigns, shoots and even fashion films. A fashion director must make sure that the models, photographers, location and concepts characterize the store, brand, or magazine in the best and most genuine way. One of the most well known creative directors in the industry is Grace Coddington who, alongside Anna Wintour and other industry professionals, are a part of American Vogue. In the documentary "The September Issue" we are able to see Coddington showing us her best work and the steps she takes to produce the magnificent spreads in Vogue. Now, don't think it will be a snap landing one of these fashion jobs. Be prepared for long hours of work, creative stumps, frequent traveling, crazy deadlines, and being willing to go back to the drawing board time and time again. Remember, as a fashion director you are responsible for the image of a brand; you produce something that the whole world will see. People will base their opinions on what you present to them. As one of the top fashion jobs in the industry, the pressure is on!
Fashion Jobs - The List Goes On
5. Fashion Forecaster
Probably one of the highest ranking careers in the fashion industry, fashion forecasters do just that, forecast the future trends and styles. This is much more sophisticated than forecasting the weather. Not only does a fashion forecaster need to have in depth knowledge of fashion but he or she must also be creative and surely have the skills necessary to research and analyze potential trends, colors, fabrics and patterns. Fashion forecasters seek inspiration in everything from movies, music, even science and technology. Getting a position as a fashion forecaster is one of the most prestigious of all fashion jobs you could aspire to.
6. Fashion Stylist
A fashion stylist has the easy (or is it?) task of making someone look good. A stylist must be familiar with what colors, fabrics and styles work best to flatter someone's shape while also knowing ways to accessorize and finish the perfect outfit. Fashion stylists are responsible for picking the best pieces for photoshoots, events, etc. and putting them together for the final product. A stylist's reputation lies on how good the client looks and, in the case of ad campaigns, whether or not the stylist can communicate the image and vision of a product. Don't be surprised if, as a fashion stylist, you find yourself traveling for motivation or shopping for clothing, or even spending a day (or a few) revamping a client's closet. Finding fashion jobs for stylists can be as uncomplicated as working as a personal shopper or styling photo shoots for websites or local magazines or newspapers.
7. Fashion Photographer
It's not just about knowing just how to take a good picture. Fashion photographers basically have two fields to be good at: fashion and photography. The photography part consists of knowing what angles, lighting, etc. As far as the fashion, photographers really need to be experts in that as well. A fashion photographer should always know what the best trends are, top designers, top fashion events and any other heavy hitter aspects of the industry. Fashion jobs in this field can consist of taking pictures for model portfolios, ad campaigns, and fashion shows. Fashion photographers are responsible for producing a shot that requires excellent technical skills and extensive fashion knowledge. For example, when a fashion photographer goes to shoot at a fashion show he or she must know exactly when to snap the shot of that model wearing the flowing dress. The picture must showcase how the fabric moves and flows instead of displaying a dress that falls limp and drags on the floor. A fashion photographer works hand in hand with stylists, makeup artists and models to ensure that the final product is efficient in sending a visual message.
8. Fashion Editor
Fashion editors supervise the direction of a fashion publication, website and other media. They are in charge for editing a fashion writer's work, making suggestions, and researching the possibilities of future stories. Fashion writers must be aware of trends and classics to assure that coverage is provided for the target audience. A fashion editor works under the pressure of meeting deadlines, supervising writers, discovering features and fresh ideas all while staying current on the industry and scanning the levels of competition. Some of the qualities necessary for one of these fashion jobs are being organized, punctual, able to communicate verbally and have impeccable writing and journalistic skills. Being one of the most competitive fashion jobs in the industry, a fashion editor should be ready to put some hard work in and spend long nights brewing up excellent, creative content.
9. Fashion Writer
Being a fashion writer is not as easy as picking up a pen and paper (or laptop, tablet, etc.) but includes extensive amounts of research. Fashion writers must be current on their knowledge of fashion and creative when drumming up writing ideas. Of course, outstanding writing skills are a must and meeting deadlines are also fundamental in this career. Fashion writers can execute interviews, cover fashion events and supply reviews of products. You have a choice of working as a freelance writer, with television shows, websites, blogs, smaller publications like local magazines and newspapers or with major publications such as Vogue or Elle, among others. This is one of those fashion jobs where you can find many opportunities and can be fairly simple to get started.
10. Fashion PR (Fashion Public Relations)
Creating a good consumer opinion is of the utmost importance for this fashion job. Where advertising and marketing can create a consumer desire to purchase a certain fashion item, public relations handles the image in its relation to the public eye. Public opinion can gauge the success and longevity of a company. Out of all the fashion jobs mentioned, fashion pr is the piece that ties it all together.
Fashion Jobs that Require WORK!
Whatever one of these fashion jobs you determine to make your career, remember that in such a reasonably competitive industry it's important to put in a lot of hard work and to be determined. All employers look for something that make their next hire special and capable of making their publication, line, show, or website shine amongst the rest. What is it that you have to offer that others don't have? How motivated are you? Tell us, which one of these fashion jobs appeal to you the most?
