November 6, 2021
Hayden looked out the plane window as the plane started descending and she could see Michigan.
Hayden was able to leave a day before her team planned to leave to Detroit so she could catch one of Luke’s games, not that Luke knew. She was surprising him as he thought he would see her when her team gets into Detroit on Sunday.
Hayden was landing in Michigan and Ellen and Jim are gonna kick her up and they are heading straight to Luke’s game.
Hayden grabbed her duffle bag and headed off the plane quickly and headed to the bag conveyer waiting for her bag to come out.
Hayden scrolled on her phone as she waited till her suitcase came out and then she grabbed her suitcase and headed out of the airport.
Hayden smiled seeing Ellen and Jim waiting in the car and she immediately put her bag in the car and hopped in. She hugged them both the best she could from the backseat.
Hayden had a pair of blue jeans on with a plain black hoodie and blue and yellow converse she had gotten when Quinn started to go to Umich.
She grabbed her blue crew neck out of her bag and slid it on, it was Umich crew neck with Hughes 43 on the back. She had originally got it when Quinn played but now it’s still perfect for Luke. She spending a blue Umich hat and was all ready for Luke’s game.
Hayden happily talked to Ellen and Jim the entire ride to Yost.
They walked into the stadium to their seats just as warm ups were over.
Luke looked out at the stands where his parents were supposed to be sitting and froze seeing someone sitting between them, Hayden.
Luke beamed brightly seeing his older sister and waved happily at her. Hayden hasn’t been able to see Luke play yet and Luke has been waiting for her to be able to go to one of his games in college.
Hayden smiled seeing how happy Luke got seeing her and waved softly back.
Hayden watched the game happily, it was one of her favorite things to watch Quinn, Jack or Luke play and she doesn’t get a lot of chances to watch them.
Hayden cheered proudly seeing Luke score, it was an absolute beautiful goal and a move she had worked on in the summer with Luke.
Umich won against Michigan state.
Hayden, Ellen and Jim all headed down to the locker room where they waited for Luke to come out.
Dylan Duke walked out of the locker room with Ethan Edwards and smiled seeing Hayden, he waved softly, “Hi Hayden.” Dylan now realized why Luke is so happy because Hayden is here.
Duke was probably Hayden’s favorite out of Luke’s friends, “Hi Duke.” Hayden kindly waved back.
Ethan’s eyes widened as Duke and him walked by, “Dude that’s Hayden Blake!” Ethan whispered shocked.
“She’s also Hughesy sister.” Dylan laughed seeing Ethan’s shocked face as they walked out for the rink. Dylan found it amusing how many people how many people don’t remember that the Hughes and Blake’s are family.
Luke rushed out of the locker room his suit messily buttoned back up and holding his backpack in his hand.
Luke rushed right to Hayden and hugged her tightly making her oof and she hugged him tightly back, “Stop growing.” Hayden groaned as Luke got even taller in the last two months.
Luke just smiled clinging to her tighter.
Hayden kissed the top of his curls and closed her eyes enjoying the hug with her baby brother.
Ellen took a sneaky photo of the two always wanting more pictures of her kids.
Luke eventually let go of Hayden and hugged both his parents before going back to Hayden’s side.
They all walked out of the rink and to the car, Jim started the short drive back to their house.
Hayden let out a soft sigh as she looked out the windows, Michigan has become a place she sees a home just like she does San Diego, Toronto and Edmonton.
Luke helped grabbed Hayden suitcase as they pulled into the driveway, they all headed inside and it was already pretty late so they all headed off to their beds.
Hayden was getting comfortable in her bed just reading her book when she heard a knock on her door and Luke peeked in.
Hayden smiled softly knowing what he wanted and she lifted up the other side o her covers making him smile and slide into the bed.
Hayden let Luke lay next to her cuddling close, they didn’t a lot of time together anymore so they both cherish the time they do get.
Luke fell asleep as Hayden continued to read.
November 7, 2021
Hayden was able to spend the whole day still in Michigan as she didn’t need to be in Detroit until later the next day.
Hayden enjoyed getting to eat breakfast that Ellen made, drinking coffee with Ellen and Jim as Luke fell back asleep on the couch.
They all went on a nice walk together in the colder weather, it was a beautiful walk with all the trees changing colors.
Hayden got to pick where they went out for lunch, she of course picked the country club as it’s her favorite.
Ellen then packed up some dinner and they went out on the boat for a sunset ride and ate dinner on the boat.
Hayden loved every second on the day and was just glad she got to spend so much time with her family.
November 8, 2021
Hayden needed to be in Detroit by the middle of the day. Ellen, Jim and Luke were all coming to Detroit and spending a night there to see her play.
They dropped her off at the rink so she could go to her practice as they went to the hotel and checked in.
Hayden finished her practice and took the team bus back to the hotel and headed up to the room her family were in.
Hayden was free for the rest of the evening so they ended to waking downtown until they found somewhere they all wanted to eat.
November 9, 2021
Hayden was gone before any of them woke up in the morning for her morning skate.
Hayden didn’t get see to much of her family before her game and she headed back to the rink for her game.
Ellen, Jim and Luke all sat in their seats and Luke looked so excited to see Hayden play. He was wearing an Oiler’s hoodie and hat that have Hayden’s number on them.
Hayden waved at the family as she got on the ice, she smiled seeing them, it was also nice to have someone at her game.
Hayden focused on the ice and scored the first goal of the game.
Unfortunately it didn’t last long as Detroit scored two more in the first period.
By the third period the Oilers could only score one more goal by the end of the game. They lost 4-2.
Hayden honestly didn’t care about the loss but was getting sad realizing she would when to say bye to her family now.
Hayden walked out of the locker room and saw them waiting for her. Luke immediately clung to Hayden and Hayden hugged his just as tight.
“I’ll miss you.” Luke mumbled softly. Saying bye has gotten easier over the last few years but it still makes him sad every time.
“I’ll you miss you to so much.” Hayden softly whispered pressing a kiss to the side of his head holding him tightly to her.
Hayden blinked and pulled back giving him a soft smile and cupped his cheek.
She let go of Luke and fell into her aunt’s arms hugging her softly.
“We’ll see you soon.” Ellen softly told her rubbing Hayden’s back softy.
Hayden nodded and pulled back and hugged Jim.
Jim pressed a gentle kiss to her cheek and they shared a smile beside Hayden hugged Luke once more before sending them a smile and walking away.
Leon was waiting the corner for Hayden and looked up seeing her walking over with a small frown, he knows saying bye to your family is hard and it’s always tough on Hayden.
Leon gave her a smile and wrapped an arm around her shoulder making her lean her head on his shoulder as they walked to the bus together.
Leon gave Connor a reassuring nod as Connor looked at Hayden worried.

adore you - m. tkachuk
Tumblr media
a/n: when i asked for fics to bring back i had a few people ask me for this one - i have the biggest soft spot for this fic because it was the first one that ever got a decent amount of notes on my old blog so I hope you guys love it a second time :)
Matthew Tkachuk was the bane of your existence. He was egotistical, a little dumb and flat out annoying. But, no matter what you did you could never get rid of him. You were forced to spend time with him because your best friend, Hannah, was dating his teammate, Noah. You actually liked Noah, he was kind and extremely good to Hannah. You couldn’t understand how he put up with Matthew and you honestly had a second thought about your friendship when he explained to you that they’d played together on US teams when they were younger too.
Matthew had been a nightmare since the first night you met, when Hannah went on and on about how she thinks you guys should meet because you’d be perfect together. As usual, you told her you weren’t looking for anything right now, because you were just too busy for it. But, you went along anyway and Hannah introduced the two of you. You’d never met a more annoying human being in your life, who was so sure you were going to sleep with him that night that you ended up chewing him out in the middle of the bar. When you’d finally finished ranting, he just went on about how cute you looked when you were mad at him and you felt your blood boil. That was two months ago, and in those two months he’d spent every waking moment of his day trying to bother you about something.
Which would explain why, as you were home catching up on some work, there was a knock on the door of your apartment and you already knew who it was. You’d opened the door and like you’d received once a week for almost a month, there was someone delivering a bouquet of flowers for Mrs. Tkachuk. You’d signed for them, not bothering to explain to yet another random delivery man that you were not in fact married and tossed them immediately in your garbage. Snapping a picture and sending it to Matthew like you’d done every other time.
Glad you signed that contract, because you’re going to go broke sending me flowers.
You’re worth every penny wifey ;)
You rolled your eyes at the nickname, annoyed with how often this went on. You called Hannah who’d been the cause of all of this in the first place, and waited for her to pick up the phone.
“Hey Y/N what’s up?” Hannah asks.
“If Matthew sends me another bouquet of flowers you can tell Noah he’s going to have one less teammate,” You practically growl into the phone, hearing Noah’s laugh in the background.
“Give Chucky a chance Y/N, the kid wants to marry you,” Noah says, taking the phone from his girlfriend’s hand.
“He’s a nightmare Noah,” You say, sighing into the phone.
“He ADORES you,” Noah explains, “He literally never stops asking about you, speaking of, are you coming to Sean’s party with us tonight?”
“Will you keep Matthew away from me?” You ask, deciding that’s the only way you’d want to even go.
“Yes, I will try and keep Chucky away from you,” Noah promises and you reluctantly agree to go to the party, earning a cheer from Hannah through the phone.
--
When you get to the party, it’s in full swing. The room is filled with people you knew and didn’t and you were honestly shocked Sean knew this many people. You were thankful though, because you knew it would be extremely easy for you to avoid Matthew all night.
You were doing great with your initial plan of avoiding Matthew. You were having a good time, dancing and drinking with your friends. You definitely were drunk but so was everyone else at the party. You’d escaped to go to the bathroom, walking down the hallway to one of the bathrooms in Sean’s large home. You stopped in front of his wedding photos, looking at the pictures from his nuptials that happened the summer before.
“When we get married it’ll be even better than Sean’s,” You hear behind you and instantly knew was standing behind you, “Think about it you can plan one of those pinterest weddings, we’ll get hitched, I’ll take us on a sick honeymoon and we can hang our wedding photos in some big old house together.”
“You’re insufferable,” You say, turning around to face the pest behind you, but when you turned your heel caught the edge of the rug you were standing under and you stumbled, falling directly into Matthew in front of you.
“And you’re drunk,” Matthew says, holding you up so you don’t hit the floor.
“I’m fine,” You say, your words slurring together more than you’d intended, you push yourself away from Matthew to stand up yourself.
“No you’re not, I saw you, you had like 4 shots with Hannah,” Matthew says, knowing just how much you’d had to drink.
“How do you even know that, stalker,” You say back, crossing your arms across your chest.
“I was keeping an eye on you, there’s a lot of people here, and you’re absolutely oblivious,” Matthew says and just as he was saying something genuinely kind, he had to ruin it.
You shook your head at his comment, “You’re honestly the worst.”
“I know, can I get you home now?” Matthew says, holding up his keys.
“I can get home myself,” You say, stumbling over your own feet when you try and move down the hallway.
“Y/N please let me just get you home safe, no funny business I swear,” Matthew promises, wrapping his arm around your waist to keep you still.
You push his arm off of you, “You’ve never done anything funny in your life, and fine.”
Matthew smiles at the insult, “Thank you, c’mon wifey we gotta get you home.”
He grabs your hand and laces his fingers with yours, pulling you out of the house and down the street to where his car was parked. He opens the door of the black Audi, letting you slide in. Hopping into the driver’s seat, he starts the car to head to your apartment.
“You drive a less douchier car than I thought,” You say, taking in the views of Calgary as you drove through the city.
“I think that was almost a compliment,” Matthew says, laughing.
“Your taste in music is terrible though,” You say, pointing to the top 40 story that was playing on the radio.
“There it is,” Matthew says, pulling in front of your building, turning his car off.
“I can get up to my place myself,” You say, opening the door to get out of the car.
Matthew sighs, “Please Y/N.”
“Whatever,” You mutter, not in the mood for an argument. You both ride up the elevator to your floor in silence, walking down the hallway to your apartment.
“Thank you by the way,” You say, opening the door to your apartment.
“Anytime,” Matthew says, heading back down the hallway, “By the way, I meant it, I’m marrying you one day.”
You shake your head and shut the door, heading to get ready for bed.
--
The next week Matthew and yourself had gone back to your normal bickering. You didn’t think much into the weird conversation you’d had in Sean’s house, unsure of why Matthew was so concerned with getting you home safe. It bothers you for a small amount of time, until you heard him compliment your ass from across Noah’s kitchen and you knew things had gone back to normal. With the All Star break over and Matthew flying back to Calgary you knew your small vacation from his pestering would be over.
But, you were packing to head to Edmonton with Hannah to go see your parents. The two of you were both from Edmonton, moving to Calgary to go to college together. While Hannah's hockey loyalty switched over to the Flames the day Noah asked her to be his girlfriend, you were still a big Oilers fan, only cheering for the Flames because of your friends with Noah and his teammates. But, after the game right before the break, in which Matthew couldn’t stop being a rat and running his mouth in the media, you were almost excited to go to the game. Looking forward to watching him get roughed around a little bit. You pack the Kassian jersey you’d bought recently, knowing you’d be going to the game with Hannah and looking forward to pissing Matthew off beyond belief.
--
You’d spent the first couple of days in Edmonton, catching up with your family and friends that lived there. You were excited to have had the couple of days home, spending time with your parents and reaping the benefits of having your mom take care of you for a few days.
You were standing in your childhood bedroom, packing up some stuff to bring back with you on your drive back to Calgary the next morning. You finished packing and slipped on your outfit for the game, putting on the Kassian jersey you’d packed. You hear Hannah beep her horn outside of your parents house, and you head out the door to see her.
“You didn’t actually buy that,” Hannah shakes her head in disbelief, thinking you were kidding when you’d told her about the jersey a couple of weeks prior.
“If Matthew gets to spend every waking moment of his life irritating me, I’m going to do the same back,” You shrug, “Plus we’re in Edmonton, it’s fine.”
Hannah sighs, “I wish I understood you guys.”
The rest of the car ride is spent catching up on how you’d both spent the last few days. Arriving at the arena, you both head in, sitting at the seats Noah had gotten for the both of you. You were right against the ice, on the Flames side of course, watching them skate for pregame warm ups. You see Noah spot you, shaking his head at your choice in jersey. You see him skate over to Matthew and point in your direction, the curly haired menace turning his attention over to you. His nostrils flare out, and he skates directly into the boards in front you, knocking your beer on the ledge to the ground.
“I cannot stand you,” You say, annoyed you’d have to go get another drink.
“Look at what you’re fucking wearing,” You hear him say before skating away, spending the rest of warm ups away from you.
“He’s mad Y/N,” You hear Hannah say, pointing to Matthew across the ice.
“Good,” You say, sipping on the beer you had to go get after Matthew knocked the first one over.
The game was off to a hot start, and hits were flying in true Battle of Alberta fashion. The entire crowd was waiting to see if Matthew would finally drop his gloves with Kassian after the media circus that ensued after their last meeting. When he finally does, you feel Hannah grab your arm, taking your attention away from your phone and you look up watching Matthew square up against Kassian. You watch him throw punch after punch, finally knocking him to the ground, Matthew looking over at you as he skates over to the box.
The rest of the game was intense, ending in a 3-4 shootout win for the Flames. You head to the locker rooms, waiting outside for Noah. The team starts to roll out one by one, looking exhausted from the hit heavy game they just played.
“You’re not actually wearing that right now,” You hear Johnny say, laughing as he comes up to you, “You must have put Chucky’s mind in a blender.”
“I’m sure he’ll recover,” You say, spotting Matthew leaving the locker room, making a beeline over to you.
“Sorry I had to give your boy a beating tonight,” He says, still a little mad at you.
“Yeah I just love him, the whole team actually,” You say, trying to rile him up.
He glares at you, before leaning down and whispering in your ear, “Nineteen’s a better number for you don’t you think?”
You ignore the chill that climbs up your spine when he places his hand on the small of your back, “Over my dead body.”
Matthew shakes his head and walks down the hallway to head back to the team’s hotel, not letting you know that seeing you in that Oilers jersey made his skin crawl.
--
When you arrive back in Calgary, you’d gotten four texts from Matthew, asking you if you’ve gotten back to your apartment yet. When you finally do, there’s a box at the door, a large red bow on top. Your gut says it’s from Matthew, and your suspicions were confirmed when you opened the box and revealed a Flames jersey, the number nineteen glaring at you. You pick up the card and nearly gag at the writing
Looks better than orange and blue babe - Matty
You think about tossing the jersey in the trash like you’d done with every bouquet of flowers he sent you, but you something wouldn’t let you. You leave the box on the island in your kitchen, deciding you’ll do something about it later. You set down the box and look at your phone, checking your texts to see Hannah had texted you to see if you were going to meet her out after Noah’s game tonight. You debate it internally for a moment, but decide to go out.
--
Later that night, you arrive at the bar and instantly spot the large group of hockey players standing in the corner. You walk over and immediately hear the sound of Matthew’s laugh, giggling at some stupid joke he probably told. You catch up with everyone and head over to the bar to grab a drink. While you’re waiting to get the bartender’s attention, you feel a hand on the small of your back and turn around to see Matthew standing behind you.
“You look incredible tonight,” Matthew whispers in your ear, flagging down the bartender with ease.
“I can’t believe you followed me over here,” You say, turning your back to him.
“I can’t believe you don’t want to be with me,” Matthew says, “We’d make such cute babies.”
Matthew drones on about how if you guys had kids, they’d probably have his hair but he wants them to have your smile. It would be cute if you didn’t know he was doing it to get under your skin. Your eyes scan the bar, seeing a group of girls pointing to Matthew and whispering, probably about the Flames resident pest being out at the bar.
“Don’t you have a fan club to entertain,” You say, nodding your head towards the girls.
“I could talk to you all night and I’d still take one of those girls home,” Matthew smirks back at you and while you’d usually feel your blood boil at the comment, you felt something different. A pang of jealousy washes over you at the thought of Matthew giving his attention to someone who wasn’t you. You’d had it for so long, and something in your gut said you didn’t want anyone else to have his attention the way you did. You look at him for a moment, taking his blue eyes and crooked smile, and relishing in the way his hand on your back feels.
You sigh, “You could just take me home.”
You see Matthew choke on his beer, “I can - I - what?”
You giggle at his reaction, his usually cocky demeanor diminishing as you finally decide he can have what he wants, “You can take me home,” you repeat again, running your fingertips along his arm.
“You’re fucking with me,” Matthew says in disbelief.
“I’m not, but you have to promise me something,” You say and he nods, prompting you to finish your statement, “I can still plan the wedding.”
Matthew laughs at the reminder of what he told you at Sean’s party, “You can have whatever you want babe.”
You grab his hand and lace his fingers with yours, leading him out of the bar and into his car. Matthew knew that once he finally got you, he wasn’t going to let you go.

You didn't know how you let JT talk you into letting him swipe through your Bumble account. And you definitely don't know how he managed to get you to let him do it while displaying your phone on his Apple TV. And what you absolutely, totally, completely did not know, was how you let him keep going when Ryan, EJ, Gabe, Mikko, Naz and some of the wives and girlfriends arrived at his and Josty’s shared apartment.
You'd known JT for years, so your dating life wasn't exactly a new subject for you. Besides, it had seemed fun at the time, the group of you lounging around the living room as JT swipes through Bumble for you.
“Hey what about this guy? He's cute!” Gabe says. JT scrolls through the guy’s profile.
“Wait,” you said, stopping him from scrolling any further. “6’4? Swipe right.”
The group erupts into laughter at your words, though you were being completely serious. JT swipes right anyways without scrolling through the rest of “Andy”’s profile, the group cheering as you match. You lock eyes with Mikko, completely by accident, and the dark look in his eyes tells you he knows something you don't. He stands, announcing he's going to get a drink from the kitchen, but you don't miss the smirk tugging at his lips as you gulp, your eyes travel up his hulking frame.
Your attention is pulled away by Naz saying something about a guy’s bio being “ultimate douchebag vibes”, and that’s when you decide it's been enough. You snatch your phone back from JT, disconnecting from the screen mirroring despite the protests around you.
“You guys have snooped into my dating life enough,” you laugh, “All thanks to Comph here, but that’s enough, seriously.”
With a grumble, the group relents, allowing the conversation to progress past “6’4? Swipe right.”
-
You were staring again.
You knew it too. You also knew that if you didn't stop soon - like, now - you were gonna get caught. Again. Just as a thought goes through your head, you feel an elbow digging into your side.
“If you want to fuck him, just shoot your shot.” You turn to glare at Ashley, finally tearing your eyes away from the blonde brute on the other side of the bar. You reach over to smack JT with the back of your hand as he starts laughing.
“Fuck off, dude,” you say, rolling your eyes. “Even if I wanted to - which I don't, by the way - I couldn't.”
“Says who?” JT says incredulously. “Besides, don't you have a thing for big dudes?” As your oldest friend of the group (though he wasn't always your friend for as long as you've known him, he was your brother’s friend from college before you moved to Denver), JT had the most shit to talk.
“Says my contract with your team, Jimothy.” The ginger grimaces at the nickname, but lets it slide, opting out of his usual reaction of punching the guys in the arms when they called him that. Instead he laughs again at your defensive expression and your avoidance of his question, turning to call the rest of the guys back to your table. Your glare intensifies as he gives you a shit-eating grin.
“Technically you don't know that it says that. What's the worst that could happen, Y/N?” he teases, wiggling his eyebrows in a manner that was so unlike him. Drunk JT was the worst you thought. “I'm sure he’d be down for a -” he pauses dramatically “night of passion.”
You gag at the way he says it, at the same time you here an accented voice say.
“Who wants a night of passion?”
You tense, not having realized the rest of the team had actually come back so quickly. You force yourself to relax and paint a playful smile on your face, turning to look at the Fin.
“Nothing, Jimothy’s just being stupid as usual,” you say dryly, scooting over as Mikko motions for you to move further in the booth. You pretend not to notice Ashley’s shit-eating grin as Naz rolls his eyes at her antics. Luckily no one at the table says anything incriminating before the boys start up a new conversation.
In the chaos you almost don't notice Mikko stretching, placing an arm behind you on the booth. But you do notice, and it makes you stiffen. Mikko feels your body go rigid, glancing down at you with a confused pout. He leans down for a moment until his mouth is by your ear.
“Are you okay?” he murmurs as his hand drops to caress your shoulder in what you guessed was supposed to be a comforting manner.
“I’ve got a lot on my mind,” you lie easily, avoiding his gaze. “Just a little on edge.”
If it was possible his voice lowers, making you strain to hear him. “Just relax.” And - that really doesn't help, heat settling in your gut at the words.
“Actually -” you say abruptly, finally meeting his eyes for the first time that night, “I think I’m gonna go home. I’m just not feeling it.”
You can see Ashley watching you closely from the corner of your eye, but you don't turn to look at her. Instead you raise an eyebrow expectantly, motioning for Mikko to get up out of the booth so you could leave. He looks surprised by your sudden desire to leave - lips parted in confusion and what you thought was a hint of hurt.
With a reluctant look on his face, Mikko slides out of the booth, stepping aside to let you slip past. You send a quick wave to the table, and after a brief goodbye, head towards the exit to wait for your Uber. You assumed Mikko sat back down as you walked away, so it surprised you when you heard Mikko call after you just as you'd begun to walk towards the curb.
“Y/N! Wait!”
Your step falters for a moment as you glance over your shoulder, pausin to let Mikko catch up with you. He reaches for you for a moment, before pulling back.
“Are you okay? Seriously.”
And like, you hate the concern in his voice. Stupid you think. Stupid accent and stupid pouty lips and stupid -
Your thoughts are interrupted by Mikko repeating your name, softer this time, as he takes a step closer to you. Your breath hitches at you stare at him towering over you, trying to force yourself to think of anything other than how his massive hands would feel on your body.
“Yeah,” you finally choke out, taking a step backwards towards your waiting Uber. “Yeah, I’m good, just - I'm just tired and have a lot on my plate right now.”
You're reaching for the door before he can respond, barely catching his faint “Text me when you get home safe!” before the door is closed. You pretend not to hear him. The driver glances at you in the mirror quizzically, seemingly wanting to ask how you left Mikko Rantanen outside of a bar without so much as a goodbye, but thinks better of it, turning up the soft music on the radio as he begins the drive towards your apartment.
You feel drained when you finally get home, showering and changing into more comfortable clothes as quickly as you can before crawling into bed. Your thoughts drift to Mikko as you close your eyes, the heat in your gut from before returning. You consider taking care of yourself, but considering you haven't been able to get off in weeks, the idea seems even more exhausting, so you let sleep overtake you.
“You didn't text me.”
You glance up from your laptop to see Mikko standing in the aisle of the plane, his eyebrows furrowed into a slight frown.
“What?” you say dumbly, you stare up at him, forcing your attention away from one of his enormous hands as it curls around the back of the seat in front of you. You only succeed in noticing his thighs in his basketball shorts, the chiseled muscles making your mouth go dry.
“When you left yesterday,” he clarifies, pulling your gaze away from his thighs. “I told you to text me when you got home safe.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah, oh.”
You're taken aback by irritation in his tone - and slightly offended. Who was he to be annoyed with you?
“Well, I was really tired, so…” you trail off, eyes falling back to your laptop screen. You hope he takes it as an end to the conversation, and luckily, he does.
You feel bad for being short with him, but JT and Ashley’s teasing from the night before - and, let’s face it, from months before - was getting to you. You can't help but watch Mikko’s back as he retreats, heading back to the front of the plane where he usually sat.
You see him slump in his seat, blonde curls barely visible over the backrest, and a pang of guilt shoots through you. It’s gone the moment you catch JT’s eye, flipping him off as he grins knowingly, before shaking your head and focusing on your work.
You didn't have time to lust over Mikko. Not when you had the job that needed your complete focus.
The flight is short, and you arrive in Edmonton faster than you thought you would. You try to ignore Mikko’s burning stare as the players and staff exit the plane, trying your best to tune into the animated story Josty was telling JT.
You breathe a sigh of relief once you close the door to your hotel room, finally relaxing for the first time all day. The game wasn't until tomorrow, so you knew you had time to do what you wanted - which was absolutely nothing.
And nothing you did, lounging around in your room watching Netflix and declining an offer from JT to go out with, well, everyone. It didn't help that you knew Mikko and Mark’s room was directly next to yours, but as you heard the chaos of a group of 30 grown men, and then some, heading out for the night, you relaxed a little more.
An idea pops into your head when the noise finally fades, your hands slipping further down your body to rest above your shorts. You were tense, and needed release - desperately. You give in to yourself, slipping your fingers under your shorts and panties, gasping as your fingers slide through your folds. You're already wet, sensitive from not having been able to cum in weeks.
A soft whimper escapes your lips as your fingertips find your clit, rubbing gently to work yourself up. You can't help the noises that escape your mouth, trying to keep yourself quiet, but easing up when you remembered that everyone had gone out.
Your breath quickens as you rub tight, fast circles on your cunt, your back arching. Your other hand finds your breast through your thin t-shirt, pulling and pinching at your nipple. The added sensation makes you moan loudly into the empty room.
Your hand moves faster and faster in your panties as you pinch your nipple roughly, pulling your bottom lip between your teeth to keep yourself quiet - just in case.
You're so so close, you can feel it. Your orgasm is right there, and it feels endless as you chase it. You move the hand that's playing with your breasts down to slip under your panties, sinking two fingers into your pussy. Your back arches even more at the feeling, whines escaping you now even with your lip between your teeth. You just - you need something to push you over the edge into you euphoria but -
“Fuck!” you sob, your body collapsing back onto your bed as your hands cease their movements. You draw your hands out of your shorts, repeating “Fuck”, before resigning to the fact that you just can't cum. Tears slip down your cheeks as you attempt to catch your breath. It ached, how bad you needed to cum but you just couldn't. So you give up on, trying to find anything else to focus on. Only hours later did you find yourself falling into a restless sleep.
The knock on your door makes you jump, the sound echoing in your empty apartment. You frown as you think Who the fuck is here this late? You'd only just gotten home and settled from your trip to Edmonton, finally relaxing on your couch with Netlix already pulled up and ready to browse through. You're so caught up in wondering who could be at your door that another three heavy knocks sound at the door.
Impatient much? you think bitterly as you make your way to the door.
You nearly slam it shut again when you see who's on the other side.
“Mikko,” you say, a questioning tone to your voice. “What are you-”
“I heard you.” His words are abrupt, cutting your sentence off. You frown, not understanding what he means. You step aside to let him come in, and he doesn't hesitate before sweeping into your apartment, slipping his shoes off and taking a seat at your couch.
You raise your eyebrows at Mikko’s boldness as you come to stand in front of him, about to ask him to clarify what exactly it was he heard, before he answers the question for you.
“Last night. In Edmonton.”
Your blood runs cold, but his voice lowers, thick with intention.
“I could hear you, when you couldn't cum.”
“I - I -” you stutter for a moment, “I thought everyone went out last night.”
It's not a denial of what Mikko said, and he knows it.
“I stayed behind,” he says simply, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. His eyes are dark, and you can't bring yourself to look away, no matter how badly you wanted to.
“I…” You flush under his gaze, somehow both absolutely mortified by him hearing you, and curious to see what he would say. “And you're telling me this because…?”
Mikko is silent for a few moments, mulling over his words. “Let me help you,” he finally says, his voice low and husky. “Let me help you cum.”
You can't help the way you gasp, the desperation from the night before flaring up again.
“Mikko I don't-”
“Think it's a good idea?” he finishes, his hands coming to rest on your waist, pulling you closer. “I don't care. I want...I want you. I want this. I want to help you.”
“Mikko…”
You sound uncertain but he knows you've already made up your mind. You let out a yelp as he tugs you roughly into his lap, smashing his lips into yours. A moan escapes you immediately, god he was incredible. Mikko is big, he's so big that one of his arms wraps itself almost completely around your waist, the other coming up to cup your face, nearly covering half of it. You feel small in his lap, and you love it.
His tongue darts in and out of your mouth, coaxing small noise from you as you grip his shoulders. It was better than you could have ever imagined, the way he bites your bottom lip and tugs back on it with a smile. You whine again as his giant hand falls to your ass, flexing over the flesh and squeezing.
He pushes against your ass, guiding you to rock against him. You tear your lips away from him, head falling to his shoulder at the friction. Your brain is fried, unable to think of anything but the behemoth of a man in front of you.
“God he's so painfully my type” you remember telling your friend when you first moved to Denver. You didn't tell her why. You didn't tell her it was because of his size. You didn't tell her it was because he was over a foot taller than you. And you definitely didn't tell her it was because you wanted him to use that size to his advantage with you.
And use it he did, moving your body the way he wants against him as you whimper pathetically. Mikko maneuvers you so that you're seated on one of his massive thighs, your leggings doing next to nothing to provide a barrier between your cunt and his thigh.
“Please,” you find yourself whining before you can stop yourself. The pressure of his leg against your clit makes you giddy, unable to think of anything but more more more. Mikko’s hand on your ass guides you, rocking your hips against him as the other caresses your hair.
“That's it,” he spurs you on, accent thickening as he moves you, “Just like that, good girl. Feels good doesn't it?”
You whimper again and nod against his neck, moving your hips even as he guides you. The friction feels delicious against your cunt, and you can already feel your orgasm building up. Mikko murmurs soft words of encouragement as you rut against him, the tent in his sweatpants growing tighter as more noises escape your throat.
Logically, you knew Mikko’s size would likely match the size of his cock but - nothing could have prepared you for what you felt against your thigh as you rocked harder into him. His cock was straining against his sweats, thick and heavy as you pushed against him.
Mikko’s hand disappears from your ass for a moment, before coming down again with a rough smack. You jolt at the sting and cry out as it only brings you closer to the edge. Your hand curls around his neck, your face smushed into his shoulder with his other hand cradling the back of your head.
“Please, Mikko, please!” you sob into his t-shirt, so fucking close to release. You were desperate, strings of curses and his name and “pleasepleaseplease” the only words leaving your mouth. He coos gently at your desperation, bouncing his leg slightly to give you more friction.
“I've got you, rakas,” (beloved) he murmurs lowly, pressing a kiss to the side of your head. “You're close aren't you?”
“Mhm.” Your voice comes out whiny, but you could really care less, too caught up in chasing your orgasm to care how you sounded. “Mik - Mikko, please, please.”
“That’s it,” he repeats, the hand that was cradling your head disappearing, only to come down on your ass sharply. A sob is ripped from your throat as you wind your hand into his hair and pull. “Come on, there you go, are you going to cum for me?”
“Yes yes yesyesyes,” you babble, frantic as you seek your high.
“Cum for me, rakas,” Mikko growls. “I want you to cum for me.”
The filthy, commanding tone he uses is enough to send you over the edge, throwing you into white-hot ecstasy as you finally - finally - achieve the release you've been craving. You're faintly aware of the scream you let out, and the tears slipping down your cheeks, but you're too focused on the pleasure you're feeling to be embarrassed - or even care, for that matter.
Mikko holds you tight to his body as you begin to regain consciousness, rocking you slower and slower against his thigh until he stops, tugging you so that you straddle his lap instead. You're hyper aware of his cock pressing against your thigh, achingly hard.
“You did so well,” he purrs, peppering your neck with soft, wet kisses. “You did so fucking good, you're so beautiful when you cum for me.” You whine at the words, finally finding the strength to lift your heavy head from his shoulder.
“Sorry I ruined your shirt,” you snivel, gasping out a sob when another tremor wracks your body. Mikko pulls you back into his chest, chuckling softly.
“That's alright, suloinen asia. (sweet thing) You did so good for me.”
Mikko strokes your hair softly as your sobs slow to a stop, holding you tightly to him to build you back up where he shattered you. He whispers sweet nothings in your ear as his fingers caress you, the heat radiating from him lulling you into a daze.
“Thank you,” you whisper softly, curling your hand around the back of his head. You pull back softly to look at him, and you can't help but revel in what you see. Mikko’s cheeks are pink, his lips swollen and bruised, and his eyes are blown wide with lust. He stares up at you in admiration, smiling almost shyly at your gratitude.
“Y/N I - fuuuck,” Mikko’s words are cut off when you rock your hips against his aching cock, his hands flying to your waist. “What are you - oh - Y/N - shit -”
“Please?” you mewl softly, pouting softly at his reprimanding stare.
“Stop that,” he groans, his head tilting back slightly in pleasure. Whether he's talking about your pout or the way you were grinding on him - who knows.
“Please?” you repeat, smiling triumphantly when his hands on your waist push you a little harder against his dick.
“Yeah,” he breathes, “Yeah, yeah, okay, one condition.”
“Mhm,” you hum, too distracted with roaming your eyes over Mikko’s chest and arms to pay attention.
“Hey.” Mikko grabs your face between two fingers, squishing your cheeks together as he forces you to look at him. You stop breathing for a moment, his grip on your face unrelenting as you wait for him to tell you his condition. “My condition,” he says, “is that I want more than just this. Let me take you on a date. And no more swiping right on any other big guys on dating apps.”
His words catch you by surprise, and you laugh loudly. Mikko lets go of your face when you do, watching you throw your head back joyfully. He's confused for a moment, but accepts your kiss, smiling against your mouth as you giggle against his.
“Is that a yes?” he murmurs between kisses.
“It's a hell yes,” you smile brightly, leaning into to steal another.
“Great, now can I fuck you over the back of this couch and make you cum again or what?”

June 22, 2023
Hayden walked through the Boston Airport heading outside to find Matt.
Hayden has spent the off season so far just healing up from her surgery and spending some quality time with her family. They haven’t had any of their friends at the lake house yet but in a few weeks everyone would be coming over.
Luke was heading on a lake trip with his college friends and Quinn and Jack were heading to LA to meet up with friends. She would see all of them in Tennessee in a few days.
Hayden was talking to Matt about how she loved seeing Boston when she came out for his first game and wishes to see everything in the summer time too. So of course Matt invited her out to Boston for a few days.
Hayden dragged her suitcase outside and headed to the parking lot Matt told her to go to and immediately started smiling once she saw Matt leaning against his car. She hasn’t seen him since December.
Hayden felt some of her tension in her shoulder loosen just seeing her best friend and she easily darted forward and hugged him tightly, “I missed you.” Hayden mumbled.
Hayden would not even admit it to herself but the entire dealing with her wisdom teeth all she wanted to do was to call Matt and ask him to come to Edmonton. She wanted a Matt hug and knew everything would have felt better with him.
“I missed you too.” Matt mumbled back hugging her firmly back and cupping the back of her head and closing his eyes contently.
Matt watches all of Hayden’s games he can and he noticed quickly something was off about Hayden and texted her and she kept her answer pretty vague until she had texted him she was getting surgery. He’s been worried about her and is glad to see her doing good now.
“You hungry?” Matt asked her as they pulled away from the hug and he put her bags into his car. Hayden arrived in Boston a bit after the middle of the day.
“Always.” Hayden grinned making Matt smile fondly and nod. They got in the car and Matt started driving them to the same diner they went to last time she was in Boston.
Hayden was excited to have the french toast again and they spent some time just catching up with each other even if they text quite a bit.
After they finished Matt drove them back to his Mom’s house and brought Hayden’s back in for her as his mom was immediately hugging Hayden and talking with Hayden. Matt smiled shaking his head fondly brining her bags to the guest room for her.
Hayden and Matt just spent the rest of the night relaxing on the couch and watching movies together and Hayden laid her head in his lap most of the time and Matt was making little braids in her hair.
Hayden glanced up at Matt’s determined face as he braided her hair and her heart squeezed. confusing her once again why she felt so many different things only for Matt.
June 23, 2023
Matt glanced at Hayden sitting in the passenger seat humming to music as he drove them to Fenway Park.
Baseball is probably the sport Hayden has watched the least of and she hasn’t been to many games expect when she went to Padre games in the summer growing up.
Matt parked the car and they both got out of the car and Hayden was immediately looking around in awe, she may not love baseball but Fenway Park was historical and really incredible to see.
Matt gently grabbed Hayden’s hand before they reached the front of the stadium and she looked confused as he pulled her into the team store in right across the street from the stadium.
“You have to get a hat.” Matt explained gently pulling her to the hat section, He knows how much she loves hats and it’s just something you should get at Fenway.
Hayden put on a white hat first and looked at the mirror and then at Matt for his option.
Matt hummed titling his head thoughtfully and grabbed the hat off her head and handed her a black hat with a red B, very similar to the hat he has on but his is blue.
Hayden smiled slightly seeing the hat was matching Matt’s and put it on and looked at Matt.
“Perfect.” Matt mumbled with a smile making Hayden’s cheeks warm but she shook that off as they headed to the register and Matt quickly tapped his card before Hayden could.
Matt just grinned as Hayden gave him an annoyed look and smacked his arm.
They headed to the stadium and walked inside.
Matt and Hayden immediately headed to get food first and you have to get a hot dog at a baseball game so they both got a hot dog and baseball peanuts and slushes and headed to their seats just as the game was about to start.
Matt and Hayden both watched eagerly as the first inning started as they ate their food.
Matt started cracking open the peanuts for Hayden knowing she just hates opening them.
Hayden laughed as Matt tossed a peanut at her and she caught in her mouth, she playfully scrunched her nose at him.
Hayden held up her phone for a selfie with Matt and they both smiled at her phone.
“So are you still a sox’s fan or now a twins?” Hayden leaned over teasing Matt.
Matt laughed shaking his head fondly pushing her playfully but gently, “Boston baby.” Matt smirked teasingly back.
“Mhm i’m sure.” Hayden just hummed with a mischievous smile nodding her head playfully.
“Shush you.” Matt playfully bopped her nose.
Matt got up heading to the bathroom and when he came back he was holding one of the large baseball caps filled with chocolate soft serve, Hayden’s favorite.
Hayden’s smile immediately brighten seeing her favorite ice cream making Matt smile pleased as he sat down and they immediately started sharing the ice cream.
The game was a really good game and actually ended up going to the tenth inning.
Hayden leaned her head on Matt’s arm as they walked out of the stadium together.
June 24, 2023
Hayden was sitting in the car as Matt drove them somewhere she had no idea where they were going.
Matt pulled into the parking lot and Hayden gasped excitedly as she realized where they were, the aquarium.
Hayden has always held a love for animals especially sea creatures. Growing up half of her time in San Diego she would always be at the aquarium and at the beach finding animals, if she wasn’t a hockey player she would have found a career with animals.
Matt smiled his eyes softening seeing how excited she was and he was not surprised to see her rush out of the car.
Matt happily let Hayden drag him around the aquarium listening to all of her rambles about each animal and seeing how she was admiring all of them.
They stayed the longest at the baby otters, Hayden was completely smitten with them.
Matt had to try and reframe from buying Hayden every stuff animal in the gift shop but managed to settle with just buying two.
They stayed at the aquarium the entire day until it was closing and only then did they leave.
Hayden and Matt got dinner by the beach and ended up spending a while at the restaurant just laughing and talking with each other over wine.
Eventually way after it was pitch ballad out they finally headed back to Matt’s mom’s house.
Hayden and Matt said their goodnights and headed to their room.
Matt paced his room after getting ready for bed and took a deep breath running a hand through his hair, “Screw it.” Matt muttered and quickly but quietly left his room and knocked the guest room and walked into Hayden’s room seeing her just laying in bed on her phone.
Hayden looked up and smiled seeing Matt but raised an eyebrow confused.
“Can i stay here?” Matt asked hopefully, he has never slept better than the few times next to Hayden and cuddling her.
Hayden’s face softened and she clicked her phone off and pulled her blankets up “Of course.” She honestly slept really good the few times next to Matt and she would not mind sleeping next to him or cuddling him.
Matt quickly got into her bed and he cuddled closer to her and he rested his head tentatively on her shoulder.
His eyes softened noticing the penguin stuff animal next to Hayden realizing she still brings what he got her with her.
Matt completed relaxed the second Hayden’s hand started rubbing through his hair and he was fast asleep within moments.
June 25, 2024
Hayden’s only request for the trip was to go on of the famous Boston duck boat tours so of course Matt booked one of them.
Hayden and Matt arrived early for their tour so their decided to explore around the tour entrance and Hayden found a jewelry store and dragged Matt in.
Hayden made Matt find something he liked and she bought it for him, it was white braided bracelet with a gem in the middle that reminded him of Hayden’s eyes.
They grabbed a coffee and a fun snack and headed off to the boat.
Hayden looked so excited as she climbed into the to boat and Matt sat down next to her.
Matt watched Hayden just looked around in awe as the duck boat drove them around Boston and towards the water.
“Oh my gosh.” Hayden muttered shaking Matt’s arm in excitement as the boat started going in the water.
Matt watched fondly at how excited she was.
Hayden beamed as the captain of the boat picked her to drive the duck boat and Matt walked up with her and took pictures of her as she was full of smiles driving the boat.
“That was so cool.” Hayden laughed she walked back with Matt and she was immediately looking out the window at the water.
Matt looked at Hayden and he was just reminded how much he is in love with her. He’s known since the day he met her and they were still children and now six years later he’s even more in love with her.
He’s always been respectful of treating Hayden like his best friend and nothing more but all he wants to do is finally get his girl.
Maybe he could slowly start treating Hayden a bit more than just his best friend and she how she reacts.
He would wait years for anything with Hayden but he didn’t just to sit around and wait for one day when Hayden might say she feels the same.
Matt put his arm around her shoulder making Hayden glance at him for a second but leaned into him and continued looking out on the water.
June 26, 2023
Matt was sitting on the guest bed watching Hayden pack up her suitcase. Hayden let Matt sleep next to the rest of the nights she stayed here and Matt was so happy about that.
It felt like she just got here and she was already leaving. Luckily he would be in Michigan in a few days and would see her for a while then.
“Did you bring your skates?” Matt asked her.
Hayden looked at him like he said something stupid, “Of course i did.” Hayden playfully scoffed.
“Then let’s go skating.” Matt grinned, they had an enough time before she had to be at the airport.
Hayden easily agreed and grabbed her skates out of her bag before finishing up packing her bag.
Matt grabbed her bag and they headed to her car before Matt drove them to his nearby rink.
Matt grabbed his skates out of the car and his stick and a backup one for Hayden and they headed inside and quickly got on the ice.
Hayden and Matt just laughed and messed around on the ice together, it’s been awhile since Hayden just enjoyed being on the ice for fun.
Unfortunately they did have to eventually get off the ice to head the airport.
“Thank you for this.” Hayden softly spoke to Matt as he parked at the airport and she squeezed his hand softly. She really enjoyed the past few days and she always love so sending time with Matt.
“Always Lee.” Matt mumbled back softly squeezing her hand back.
They got out of the car and Matt grabbed her bag for her before he pulled her into a tight hug, “I’ll see you in a few days and good luck tomorrow.” Matt softly told her pressing a slight kiss to the top of her head.
Hayden smiled slightly and just squeezed him once more before pulling bag and waving softly as she grabbed her bag and turned away.

D.W. Colt → Genevieve Padalecki, Olivia Munn, Sophia Bush, Penn Badgley → Human Shifter
→ Basic Information
Age: 47
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Bisexual
Birthday: February 4th
Zodiac Sign: Aquarius
Religion: Agnostic
→ Her Personality
D.W. has always had issues forming attachments to people. Since she was a child, she looked at things through an overly pragmatic lens and tried to analyze people to best understand them. This most likely stemmed from her mother coming and going and her father’s constant distraction when she was young. She has very few familial connections, and doesn’t let many people past the outside shell that she created. One person who has wormed their way through is D.W.’s fellow clan member, Greta Bow. They connected when Greta wanted to shadow her and she was able to help her work through the trauma she experienced at the hands of hunters. While Greta ended up staying at her current position, D.W. fell in love with her. She knows nothing will come from it, but it keeps her going throughout the day. One unique thing is D.W. ’s ability to view herself, her actions, and her beliefs as tools to help fix what is wrong. She can detach from her emotions and do what is necessary to keep things on the right path.
This detachment doesn’t mean she doesn’t care, however. She cares about ideas and issues a lot, specifically those related to her career. As a Victim Advocate she is able to connect with her clients, both supernatural and human alike. She fights for them and for their safety whether it is from abusive parents or spouses, or just a system that wronged them. She is a driving force to try and end non consensual changes in the Animal Shifter community, and specifically wants to go after the Nimbles and Hyenas. Another goal that she has dedicated her current existence towards is ending the Colt family of hunters. A couple of years ago she set out to seduce one of the brothers in order to gather information. It went further and further, and she has been married to Colin Colt for almost a year. Though she doesn’t know how long it will go on for, she knows it will end with the clan taking the Colts down.
→ Her Personal Facts
Occupation: Victim Advocate
Scars: Depending on the Shift/Form
Tattoos: Depending on the Shift/Form
Two Likes: Boots and Being Alone
Two Dislikes: Dogs and Bright Lipsticks
Two Fears: Being Compromised and Childbirth
Two Hobbies: Shooting and Taxidermy
Three Positive Traits: Patience, Undisturbed, Unbothered
Three Negative Traits: Detached, Calculating, Overambitious
→ Her Connections
Parent Names:
Kenneth Grainger (Father): Despite living in the same city, Ken and D.W. rarely see each other. Occasionally they’ll meet up if Molly and her partner are in town, but that only happens once or twice a year.
Priscilla Grainger (Mother): Priscilla has flitted in and out of D.W.’s life  since she’s been born. When Molly came around, she tried to stay longer, but never lasted longer than a season. Last D.W. heard she was in Edmonton.
Sibling Names:
Molly Bliss (Sister): Molly moved to Albuquerque shortly after her 30th birthday to follow a fellow human shifter, Drew Bliss. The two have lived happily as artists in the interim 15 years. D.W. isn’t very good about reaching out to anyone, so Molly typically initiates all phone calls.
Children Names:
None.
Romantic Connections:
Greta Bow (Beloved): She only truly became acquainted with Greta when she showed interest in the victim advocate branch. When she began opening up to her, D.W. helped her with the trauma from her own capturing. Greta then began shadowing her and they spent nearly every day together for a few months. Slowly, D.W. fell for her very genuine soul. She knows the feelings aren’t reciprocated, but is happy to settle with the fact that she is in her life.
Colin Colt (Husband): D.W. seduced and married Colin to get information on the Colts, and eventually take them down. Now he’s pushing for babies, and she’s running out of ways to say no.
Platonic Connections:
Arthur Milligan (Good Friend): Art is a good friend and the only other person in the family who has a connection with the Colts. His face is known to them as her friend from high school and college, and at times he is the only human shifter she sees for weeks. She always knows that she can count on him when she needs a break from it all.
Churchill Darling (Friend): Church jokingly gave her the idea to make one of the Colts fall for her, after a particularly long ranting session about them. He gave her his full support when she laid it out for him, Sirius, and Vincent, and went toe to toe for it.
Sirius Cobic (Leader): Sirius was the one who finally gave her the go ahead to infiltrate the Colts. With his blessing she has been able to create a massive network of information on the Colts that will lead to their demise.
Vincent Kane (Friend): Vincent does not approve of her mission and was the only force working against her in her quest to start following the Colts. It has made their friendship frosty at times, though they do get along.
Douglas Gish (Friend): Douglas is a good person to go to when she needs to decompress. He’s funny and quick witted, though not annoyingly so. He has a good mind and is great at conversation.
Lillian Pickford (Friend and Coworker): Lillian and D.W. often work together when Lillian is trying to gain justice for her victims. They get along well and share a passion for their work. D.W. sees Lillian’s insecurity and is working out a way to help with her confidence.
Emmanuel Flores (Former Potential Client): Emmanuel was a perfect example of how Percy paid someone off after he ruined their life, however he didn’t want to bring anything forward, or be used as an example against the Nimbles.
Jesse Wicker (Client): Jesse’s parents were killed a few weeks ago, in what looks to be an attack by a hyena. D.W. has been helping to organize the funeral and get Jesse on his feet. He’s turning 18 in a month, and won’t have the support of the system afterwards.
Caroline Hess (Client): She has been helping Caroline process the paperwork for the divorce from her abusive ex-husband. He has continued to try and intimidate Caroline, despite numerous restraint orders. If he threatens her anymore, D.W. may take care of him, and Caroline won’t have to finish the filing.
Hostile Connections:
Elle Colt (Target): Elle, like many of the Colts, to a liking to D.W. quickly. They appeared to be the same age, had the same interests, and could even share clothes. Elle, along with Blaine and Colin, was her primary target in order to be accepted by the Colt family.
Blaine Colt: (Target): Blaine was nearly as easy to win over as his brother, and was actually her initial target before D.W knew he was married. He has a shrewdness about him, however, that made her back off in the end. They’ll often go shooting together when she has to spend time with him. Lately, D.W has been unsure about their connection thanks to Imani whispering in his ear.
Alice Colt: (Target): Alice has a deep distrust of D.W. that stems all the way back to before the wedding when she saw her slipping her ring on and off before coming “home”. She suspects that Alice brought it up to Colin, but it didn’t take much for her to gaslight the younger woman. She knows that the cruelty streak runs deep with Alice and can’t wait to get rid of her.
Hailey Colt (Target): If D.W. had to pick a Colt that she could tolerate the most it would most likely be Hailey. She minds her business and she doesn’t share any overly obnoxious opinions when they go on walks. D.W. can see how depressed she is, and wonders how no one else sees it. Then she remembers that she has a job, and not to get emotionally involved.
Casper Colt (Target): D.W. finds Casper the most arrogant of the Colts, simply due to the fact he has done nothing, yet walks around like royalty. She knows Blaine and Colin are getting sick of the attitude as well, and is looking forward to seeing him get torn down.
Iris Colt (Target): D.W. thinks it’s a bit middle ages to arrange a marriage for power consolidation, but it’s not really her place to say. She has some sympathy for Iris, and wonders what she might have been if not a hunter.
Imani Colt (Dislike): Imani is going to blow D.W cover and she has no idea how to get the former Anderson hunter off of her back. D.W did not have the correct intelligence on Blaine and Imani’s relationship and it has thrown a wrench in her plans. She is unsure whether to start playing it extra nice or go on the defensive.
Percy McCormick (Dislikes): Percy McCormick doesn’t care about the people he unleashes on Chicago or the trauma that he leaves behind when he allows reckless and dangerous changes. A significant number of supernaturals who come to her are Nimbles, looking for any kind of answer.
Juliette Willott (Dislikes): D.W. is incredibly suspicious of Juliette. She doesn’t like the radio silence that much of the hyenas became once she took over, and she knows she is behind the uptick in random changes.
Jin Asato (Former Contact): Jin was her primary contact within the Hyenas before Juliette took over. She thought she was making headway with convincing him to stop the neverending non consensual changes, but all communication ceased once Juliette came to town. Now, Jin won’t answer her emails or calls.
Pets:
Ruger (Colin’s Dog): Ruger, like all domesticated animals with Human Shifters, hates her. He seems to be the only one who has figured her out. She’s considered letting him loose, or killing him herself, but he won’t let her get within 10 feet of him.

September 12, 1905: Master horseman John Ware, was killed, when his horse tripped in a badger hole crushing him and breaking his neck. He was 60 years old.
Ware's funeral was reported to be one of the largest held in the early days of Calgary.
John Ware was an African-American and later Black Canadian cowboy, best remembered for his ability to ride and train horses and for bringing the first cattle to southern Alberta in 1882, helping to create that province's important ranching industry.
Ware was born into slavery in South Carolina. After the American Civil War he left the Carolinas for Texas where he learned the skills of a rancher and became a cowboy. Ware's great stature and dedication to hard work made him a natural and allowed him to work his way up to Canada driving cattle from Texas to Montana and then into the great plains that would eventually become Alberta. Upon his arrival in Calgary he found work at the Bar U and Quorn ranches before starting his own ranch near the Red Deer river.
By 1900, he and his wife, Mildred Lewis (1871-1905), had five children. He moved from the Calgary area to a spot northeast of the village of Duchess, Alberta. In 1902 his first home was destroyed by the spring flood. He rebuilt on higher ground overlooking a stream, now called Ware Creek. 3 years later Mildred died of pneumonia in the spring.
There are a wide range of tales about his ability to eat, ride, shoot, and contribute to Western culture. It is said that he was never tossed from a wild horse and that he popularized steer wrestling, which would then become a highlight of the Calgary Stampede.
The Blackfoot people reportedly called him "Matoxy Sex Apee Quin" (Bad Black White Man) because of his courage and enormous strength, and wondered if he had connections to the spirit world.
The story of John Ware is that of a remarkable figure in history who helped to lay the foundations of the ranching industry in western Canada and at the same time defying stereotypes. Born a slave, Ware worked his way to being one of the most well-respected figures in frontier Alberta, crossing race lines thanks to his good nature and hard work
LEGACY:
🏇He is the subject of a biography, John Ware's Cow Country by J. W.Grant MacEwan (Edmonton: Institute of Applied Art, 1960. Second edition, Saskatoon: Western Producer Prairie Books, 1973. Third edition, Vancouver: Greystone Books, 1995.)
🏇Several geographical features near the Wares' ranch are named in their honour:
🐎John Ware Ridge (formerly N*gger John Ridge)
🐎Mount Ware
🐎Ware Creek
🏇Other namesakes include:
'John Ware Junior High School' in southwest Calgary, the John Ware building at Calgary's SAIT Polytechnic, a polytechnic undergraduate college, and the John Ware 4-H Beef Club in Duchess, Alberta.
🏇In 1958 the modest log cabin that was the family home from 1900 to 1905 was relocated from its prairie setting near Millicent, Alberta, to the Red Deer River valley in Dinosaur Provincial Park, about 20 kilometres to the east. The cabin was restored and re-dedicated in 2002.
🏇Diamond Joe White, a musician from Alberta, has released a song titled "High Rider: The John Ware Story"
🏇None of John and Mildred's five children who lived to adulthood had descendants. Their last surviving daughter, Nettie, died on her 96th birthday in March 1989 in Vulcan, Alberta. Their last son, Arthur, died in Burnaby, British Columbia, in May 1989; however, relatives of Mildred Ware still reside in New Jersey and British Columbia.
🏇Canada Post issued a commemorative stamp featuring John Ware, to celebrate Black History Month 2012.

A Hockey Life by Matt Cullen
Part 1
One of the worst parts about growing up was having to make a malt.
Don’t get me wrong, the ingredients are pretty simple. And I loved drinking them. But if I had to make a malt, that meant one thing: I lost a hockey match on our outdoor rink.
My father, Terry, built an outdoor hockey rink in our backyard. Me and my two younger brothers, Mark and Joe, spent every spare minute we had on that ice. We’d come home from school, change and hit the rink. Every birthday party was on the rink. We hooked up lights onto the roof and would play until it was dark and all we could see were the bright Minnesota stars above.
All I’ve ever known in my life is hockey. My earliest childhood memories were on that rink in Virginia, Minnesota. That’s all I really wanted to do as a kid, was be on the rink and play with my brothers and friends. There was nothing better in life. I know it’s the same story for a lot of guys, but that’s how I fell in love with hockey.
If we weren’t spending our night in the backyard, we were usually attending one of my father’s high school games. From my youth until I was 10 years old, my father was the hockey coach for the Virginia Blue Devils. And I imagined myself being a Blue Devil one day. But when I was in the fourth grade he took over as coach of the Moorhead Spuds.
(I remember being so mad. I didn’t want to be a spud. I wanted to be a Blue Devil! They had such a cool logo. What even is a spud? A potato? We’re going to be potatoes? It’s so funny thinking back at how upset I was at the time).
I still remember going to watch my dad coach. My friends and I collected programs and would tear out the pages. If our team won the game we would count down the final seconds and throw those pages into the air like confetti and celebrate like we just won the Stanley Cup. In between periods my brothers and I would play mini sticks with the team doctor in the hallway.
When we got home there was always one final chore for the night. We shoveled off the outdoor rink and flooded the ice so that it would be nice and solid for the next day. On the nights before a big game or tournament Dad would bring out a bucket of hot water. It was like we were Zamboni-ing it. It felt like big time. The ice would be super smooth after. The stakes were high.
And those tournaments could get pretty intense. My father, my brothers and me would mix teams for a 2-on-2 matchup. The losing team had to make the winning team malts and serve them to the winners.
So if I was making the malts, it meant that I had lost. But if I had won, then the losing team had to make malts for me and my teammate. The only thing better than the sweet taste of victory was the sweet taste of drinking that malt.

Part 2
In Minnesota, high school hockey is king.
We didn’t have NHL on the Fly or ESPN Hockey. The NHL was another planet. To kids growing up in Minnesota in the 80s, playing for your high school team was the dream.
My favorite moments were when my dad would let me in the locker room. I was in awe of the high school players and wanted to be them one day. For me, it was the equivalent of my children being in the locker room with Sid and Geno.
To us Minnesota kids, high school hockey was the NHL. And playing for the state championship was our Stanley Cup.
Every year my family would drive three-and-a-half hours south to the St. Paul Civic Center to watch the tournament, whether my dad’s team was in it or not. I remember it had clear boards and was filled with 15,000 people watching. It was the highlight of my whole year. It was like a holiday.
My best memories of my high school career at Moorhead was playing in that tournament. For a kid growing up around high school hockey, that was the ultimate. I played in the tournament during my sophomore, junior and senior years. Unfortunately, we never won the title, but we were runner-up twice and finished third the other year.
What sticks out most was my senior year. I was playing with my brother Mark and we had a good team. That year I started thinking that I was good enough to maybe play in college and maybe, someday, the NHL. We made the state tournament again that year. We faced Rochester in the semifinal and the game went into double overtime. I scored the game-winner to get us to the final, though we didn’t finish it off in the last game of the season.
Losing was tough. Obviously, I wanted to win. But I think losing in those games was good for me in the long run. Losing in the finals and never quite getting there, I felt like there was maybe more I had. I felt that this isn’t my big moment. There’s maybe more ahead. I don’t know why I thought that. I’m not sure where it came from. But going through my head during that defeat was that my big moment was still to come.
Part 3
I jumped over the boards at Maple Leaf Gardens and skated to the faceoff circle to square off against Hall-of-Famer Mats Sundin. It was October of 1997. Two years ago I was just a high school senior.
Now a member of the Anaheim Ducks, I was about to skate my first career shift in one of the NHL’s most historic venues. I lost the faceoff, a defensive zone draw. The Maple Leafs had a shot on net and the coach called me off the ice. It was a short shift, but I’ll never forget it.
Everything was so new to me. I was living in California on my own, the farthest I’ve ever been away from home. I was balancing all these new experiences from dry cleaning, being on the road and keeping up with an apartment. Not to mention learning how to play in the NHL.
Being a rookie in the league was a lot different back then. I was really quiet my first year, if you can believe that. We had an older group and the rookies were treated like rookies. We only spoke when spoken to. I came home from the rink one day and called my brother and I said ‘You won’t believe this, but I didn’t say one word at the rink the entire day. I was there for five hours, didn’t say one word to anybody.’
My welcome to the NHL moment happened on Day 1. Teemu Selanne walked into the room and took out his skates. He hadn’t skated the entire summer and his skates had rust on them. He threw them on and was the best player on the ice from the first day. I was thinking, 'This is crazy. This is a whole new level of hockey.’ I was on a line with Teemu that first year and he scored a career-high 52 goals - but believe me, it was no thanks to me.
I spent most of my four seasons in Anaheim skating alongside Teemu and Paul Kariya. And they taught me so much about the game.
Teemu was such a fun-loving, easy-going guy. He loved the game. He just played for fun and enjoyed it. Paul was super intense and serious, the ultimate pro. It was super cool to see both sides of them.
But the thing I learned the most that year was from Paul, who was also my roommate on the road during my time there. He taught me how to be a pro. He was super structured and detailed, trained like crazy. He showed me how much you have to commit, how much you had to put in to being a pro if you wanted to be good at it.
Paul would stretch every night before going to bed, so I started stretching every night. I think that was one of the biggest reasons I was able to stay healthy throughout my entire career and play until I was 42 years old. I stretched throughout my whole career.
Coming out of high school I was pretty green. I didn’t realize that in an 82-game season you should be working out. I didn’t do things like that.
I always think back to spots in my career and people that came across my path, I think it’s for a reason. I learned so much from Paul, who remains a close personal friend to this day. Without his guidance I don’t think my career would have gone where it did.
Tumblr media
Part 4
My hockey career hit a crossroads in the summer of 2005. I was 28 years old and worried that my career might be coming to an end. My last year in Anaheim and the next year-and-a-half with Florida were unmemorable. Then the NHL lockout happened. I knew if I had another bad season, retirement might come earlier than I anticipated. You can fall off the map pretty quickly in the NHL.
Then came a dilemma. Two teams called me with a contract offer. One was my hometown team, the Minnesota Wild. The other call came from Carolina Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford.
Minnesota was my hometown and was offering more money. Carolina seemed a much better fit and I already had built a relationship with Peter Laviolette, who coached me with the U.S. at the World Championship.
The chance to come home to Minnesota seemed too good of a dream to pass up. Going to Carolina would require a huge risk and huge leap of faith. I talked with my wife Bridget and we prayed. Something told me to take the risk and go to Carolina.
We had an interesting group. There were some unknowns like Eric Staal, Justin Williams, Andrew Ladd, even myself. There were also some older, veteran guys like Ray Whitney, Cory Stillman, Rod Brind'Amour and Brett Hedican. We had Martin Gerber in goal and a rookie, Cam Ward, as the backup.
Sports Illustrated picked us to finish 30 out of 30 teams. But everything came together in a way that I never experienced. We got off to a great start and things just worked out. I scored 25 goals and had one of my best years. We finished second in the East and added guys like Mark Recchi and Doug Weight at the deadline.
We opened the playoffs against Montreal at home and lost the first two games. It was awful. I was thinking our great season was coming to an end. We switched goalies and Cam stepped in and he was lights out. He played unbelievable and won the Conn Smythe.
We beat Buffalo in Game 7 to get to the Stanley Cup Final and faced Edmonton, a Cinderella team that was an eighth seed in the West. We had a chance to win the Cup on home ice in Game 5, but lost in overtime. Then we went to Edmonton and got pounded.
Game 7 was back in Carolina. It was the most fun game I’ve ever played in. The crowd didn’t sit the entire game, they stood the whole time. It was intense. I hadn’t experienced that before. I was nearly 30 years old, but I felt like a little kid.
We battled and held on for a 3-1 win, and you can’t even believe it’s actually happening. After Aaron Ward handed me the Cup, I did a quick twirl. There was a sold-out crowd in the building, but when I looked up all I could see was the Minnesota stars and the hanging lights on that outdoor rink growing up.
All those games I played with my brothers and friends, pretending to be playing for the Stanley Cup, and there I was, holding this trophy high above my head and living that dream.
Our families joined us on the ice for the celebration. And I remember all those times when things didn’t work out. Not winning Minnesota’s Mr. Hockey as the best high school player (with all due respect to Erik Rasmussen, of course). Not getting drafted in the first round.
And I remembered that feeling of losing in the state final my senior year, when I believed that my big moment was still to come. And this was it. This was the big moment I was waiting for. We reached the pinnacle of the hockey world: Stanley Cup champions.
And no one will ever take that away from us.
But what I really took away from that group of guys was leadership. There were a lot of good leaders on that team, and they all weren’t wearing letters on their jerseys. You see it takes a large group of leaders on your team to win.
And for some of those older guys, this was their only and last chance to win a Cup. You see how fleeting your opportunity is for winning a championship. They fought so hard for it. They put so much into it. It was eye-opening to see how much it meant to them.
I know I’ve said it before, but really do believe everything happens for a reason. Instead of playing it safe, taking more money and playing in my home of Minnesota, I took a chance on Carolina. I went into that year thinking it could be my last one in the NHL. And I ended it by lifting the Stanley Cup.

Part 5
There are few things I loved more than coming home after a game and flooding my own outdoor rink. I would drive home, put on my warm clothes, fill a thermos with some wine and go outside and drink it while I flooded the rink.
By that time I was back in Minnesota, having signed a contract with the Wild. My chance to come back home came true after all. And it seemed like the perfect time to go home, play out those three years, retire a Wild and live in Minnesota.
By that time, I also had a family. Three young boys of my own: Brooks, Wyatt and Joey. And for the first time in my life, it was my job to build the rink in the backyard. I had never done it before, but it was so fun. I felt like I was my dad.
I wanted to give my boys all the things that I had growing up, except now I’m the old guy flooding the rink. They were still very young in those years. Joey had just been born a few months before (I actually watched him being born on Skype from my hotel room while I was playing with Ottawa in the playoffs against the Penguins).
When I skated on that outdoor rink, it was the first time I had done so since I left my home in Minnesota in 1997. I was just as excited as the kids to be on the outdoor rink. It was the coolest thing. It certainly brought back a lot of memories, but mostly I felt my life coming full circle.
That included sharing in the Cullen family tradition of attending the Minnesota high school tournament. We actually saw a young Jake Guentzel skating there for Hill Murray on that ice sheet. I definitely didn’t think I’d see him scoring 30, 40 goals in the NHL alongside Sidney Crosby one day. It’s funny how it works out.
But those three years in Minnesota, it was really about family. We spent holidays at home with my boys and the entire family. It was a really special experience getting to play at home. I really enjoyed it. It gave the kids the experience of growing up on the outdoor rink.
It was during that time in Minnesota that they started to really love the game. For me as a dad, that was the ultimate to be able to share it with them.

Part 6
The phone didn’t ring on July 1, 2015, the annual start to NHL free agency. I had just finished two great years in Nashville, but my future was still unclear. I still wanted to play even at 38 years old, but I was pretty sure that it was the end.
That day came and went without a call. Then the next day came and went. Then the next week. Then the next month. Even so I continued to train and keep myself ready just in case an opportunity came up. At least I would be in shape and could make a decision for myself. I didn’t want it made for me because I was out of shape.
One day in early August, the phone rang. It was Jim Rutherford.
Bridget was out for a run. When she got back, I said, 'You’ll never guess who just called.’ And she goes, 'Was it Jim?’ It was crazy. She just knew.
As usual with these decisions we talked for a while and prayed on it. But we felt like we kept getting these opportunities and it would be crazy not to jump on it and give it a try. We took that leap and went to Pittsburgh.
The rest speaks for itself. We won back-to-back Stanley Cup championships the next two years, the first team to do so in two decades. It was a historical run.
I just pinch myself and think about how close it was to not happening. Those were probably the best years of my whole career and life with the Penguins. Going through all that with the boys and Bridget and that group of players, the whole organization, everything was perfect. It was beyond anything I could have ever imagined.
I certainly couldn’t have imagined it the way we started that first season, though. We had such a terrible start that nobody had any expectations. I remember my son Wyatt coming to me at Christmas and crying because we had dropped out of the playoff picture.
Then Mike Sullivan came and we made a bunch of changes. Things started rolling from there. It was a unique group. It was a special group. That first year everything came together, and we were having so much fun. We were like a machine, all the way to the Cup.
The second year it was the same group, but it was a totally different year. We had to really lean on each other the most that year. The expectations were high going in and it brought our group closer together. It was rewarding because we stuck together through so many ups and downs.
I’ll always have the Cups and those memories. But when I think back on those times what really stands out is watching my boys with those guys. A lot of the guys would come over to my house, Chris Kunitz, Nick Bonino, Sidney Crosby, Ian Cole, Marc-Andre Fleury, Phil Kessel, Carl Hagelin. We’d all have a couple glasses of wine and the guys would play mini sticks with the boys (the most intense games were between the boys and Patric Hornqvist; I know you’re shocked).
That, for me, was the coolest thing ever to watch. It was like the boys were part of the family. They’d come in the locker room after practice trying to avoid doing homework. They’d steal gum. One time, Joey hid in Ian Cole’s change stall. He jumped out and scared the crap out of him.
Those are the memories I’ll treasure, probably more than anything. Just seeing them around the room every day. I know the boys will remember it forever.
Tumblr media
Part 7
I’ve been in a constant state of almost-retirement for the last few years. But coming into this last season, I knew that no matter what it would be the end. Even if we had won the Cup I would have been done. Playing those last few years really gave me the clarity to know this was it.
It was an emotional time, but I knew it was coming. It just felt right and I was really at peace with everything when it was over.
I felt like it was only right to retire in Pittsburgh with everything that the organization had given me and done for me. I’m so happy I came back and finished my last year in Pittsburgh. I wouldn’t trade that last year for anything.
I’ve spent a lot of time reflecting. More than anything I’m just so appreciative of everybody that helped me along the way. Looking back on it there are people that came into my life at the right time to lead me one way or teach me something. It’s not an easy thing to play for that long of a time. It takes so many people to step out of their way to help you, and I needed a lot of help!
And the friends I’ve made along the way, whether it was Eric Staal or Mike Fisher or Ryan Suter or Paul Kariya or the guys in Pittsburgh. There are just too many to name and I’m sorry if I left anyone out.
I just hope I had a positive impact with my teammates wherever I went. I tried to be the best teammate that I could be throughout my career, and be there for other people, try to be a good example.
But the biggest lesson I’ve learned from my 21 years and 1,500-plus games in the NHL is that you have to take a risk.
By my nature, that’s not me. I’m not a risk-taking guy. I think you’re given certain opportunities in life and if you’re willing to take a risk and throw yourself in all the way then special things can happen. For me, that was the case. We leaned on our faith a lot and took leaps of faith. Thank God we took those chances and opportunities where He was sending us.
I remember waking up in the middle of the night many times these last few years thinking, 'What am I doing? I’m 40 years old. I don’t think I can play another year in the NHL.’ After each time I signed the past few years I woke up in a cold sweat, not sure if I could still play.
Honestly, if I could play forever, I would. All I know is hockey. I’ve never done anything. I never wanted to do anything else. I don’t know anything else.
I may have skated my last shift, but I’m not hanging up my skates just yet. After all, there is a sheet of ice in Minnesota that needs to be flooded every night. That’s where you’ll find me, sipping my thermos. Maybe, even using the hot water to get the surface nice and smooth so the next day me and my three boys can have our own little intense 2-on-2 tournament with a malt on the line, skating in the open air, on the outdoor rink, under the hanging lights, under the Minnesota stars.
For me to be able to take them to the rink and play with them on the ice, as a dad, that’s as good as it gets. I couldn’t ask for more. That’s what I had as a kid and to be able to share it with my kids is my greatest joy.
It’s funny. When I was a kid, I used to hate making those malts. Nowadays, it’s not so bad.

Bucket List - The Giant
How many times does one get to cross off a Bucket List item in one’s lifetime?
This past week I had that chance.
It had taken me twenty-six years to achieve this goal. Multiple failed attempts over those two decades. But this week I did it.
This quest started in 1996.
I was twenty-five (just about to turn twenty-six) when I first got the idea to do this. Who could have guessed all those years ago it would be a quest and later a bucket list item.
It didn’t start out that way.
No it started out as a simple back country/light off-roading trip to visit a tree.
Yes a tree.
Not just any tree mind you.
Rather the worlds largest Douglas Fir which happens to be on Vancouver Island.
I moved to Vancouver Island in early January 1996 on a wing and a prayer. It was a spur of the moment move from Edmonton brought on by one of my best friends telling me a Tuesday morning that he had throat cancer and they were giving him a 50/50 chance of survival. That fateful morning over coffee while we discussed options he and I came up with the idea to move that week to Vancouver Island. Neither he nor I really knew anyone there but as we put it, “I’ll be damned if I die in Edmonton”. Later that Tuesday evening my girlfriend and I decided yes we were going to do and so for the next three days we sold what we could, donated the rest and loaded up a 1981 Datsun 200SX with the dog, two cats, and all that we could jam into the car and trunk as well as tie to the roof and deck of the trunk. My buddy had decided late Thursday to stay in Edmonton and get treatment, but the girlfriend and I decided to go ahead with the plan, the adventure to move to the far west coast of Canada. We left that fateful Friday morning during a blizzard for Vancouver Island.
Like many I had seen photos of giant trees in National Geographic, seen video footage of the giants of the forests from California to Vancouver Island my entire life. In my first few weeks on the island I had been introduced to these giants in real life at Pearson College (we stayed a couple of weeks there as the girlfriend had attended it when she was younger) and East Sooke Park. Photos in magazines and video footage on TV or in movies does NOT do these giants justice.
I began to ask locals as I got to know people who had grown up on the island and settled into my new life on the west coast. Where can I find the biggest? The widest? The oldest? There are really more than just one species out here (yes there are)?
Time and time again people who hiked, who enjoyed four wheeling and those who enjoyed the mountains on the south island talked about the Giant out by Port Renfrew.
Where is it? How do I get there? Can you pin-point it on this map?
And time and time again people would point to an area east of Port Renfrew and say “it’s in there and you are going to need a 4x4 to get to it”.
Well not one to let a little thing like not owning a 4x4 stop me I started out trying to find it with my faithful dog Sarah in tow on my days off. At this point I was driving a 1976 Plymouth Volaré station-wagon. No it was not a four wheel drive but it was a solid built car from the 70’s, had okay ground clearance for a car, ground grabber winter tires, a trustworthy slant six and a driver who knew how to drive in the back country. For over a year and a half I drove down logging roads, forestry service roads and pretty much anything I could squeeze that ‘wagon onto. More than once I ended up spending the night sleeping with the dog in the back of the car. I tried countless times to get the girlfriend to join me in my quest or get a friend to come along but it was always just me and the dog - and I treasured those times with Sarah. I had found the worlds largest Sitka Spruce. I had come across groves of old growth forest few living people had ever witnessed. I had encountered numerous black bears and spotted a few cougars, herds of elk, mating bald eagles, and I had met a ton of the locals who lived in Port Renfrew and struck up friendships I still have to this day.
But I never did find it.
In 1998 a game changer would enter my life.
The first edition of the "Backroads Mapbook - Vancouver Island" and a BC Forestry road map (I still have the map).
Both were given to me by an old logger who had spent his life logging Vancouver Island and living in Port Renfrew whom I had met at the local pub one evening. I honestly think he thought I was a little touched in the head. “Why is a Montreal city boy who works with computers out driving down dangerous roads including active logging roads in an old Mopar wagon with just a dog to find a tree?”. But he listened as I explained why I wanted to see this tree. By the end of that night we were fast friends and he told me, “next time you’re in town track me down, I am normally here (the pub) and I will have something that will help you on your crazy quest”.
Next time I was up in town I stopped at the pub and there he was. He went out to his old Ford 4x4 and grabbed a book and a map. As I looked over the map in awe of all these amazing roads I could explore, he found a spot on the map and pointed to it - “Right here, this is Red Creek Fir”. I could have cried, but of course while wearing my redneck hat as it were, all I did was smile. “I don’t know if this is the one you are looking for, but this is the biggest fucking tree I have ever seen and it awed even this old loggers heart the first time I saw it” he said as he took a drag from his smoke and chased it with a mouthful of Lucky Lager.
The next morning I headed out to finally see My Tree.
Mother Nature had other plans - the road was washed out.
Three more times I tried over six months and every time the road was out or just not something I could get down with the ‘wagon. That winter would see the end of that wagon. It got replaced with a Chevy Beretta GT.
The following year I tried nine times but the Beretta was a sports car, lowered - great on pavement, not so great on back roads. Within the year I would trade it for another wagon, this time a 1989 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera International Edition.
For two years I tried with the Olds wagon and again Mother Nature would throw roadblocks in my way. Fallen trees, washed out roads, mudslides, rock slides - you name it.
But I never stopped trying.
After my divorce in 2000 I would get myself a 1982 BMW 320i which I built into a track/rally car. When I set up the suspension for rally with AT tires that little Bimmer could get a number of places guys in Jeeps were always stunned to see me at. My quest continued but it was without my trusty sidekick as Sarah had reached the end of her life and had to be put down in May 2000. Those were lonely trips that first year without the dog. I kept making my attempts but it wasn’t the same without someone (even a dog) to share the experiences with.
Enter a new adventure partner. In February of 2001 I would meet the woman/best friend/adventure buddy who shared my sense of adventure. She totally understood my quest and had been to the tree in her early twenties when she used to do back country backpacking/camping. For two years, time allowing she and I would be out in the Olds ‘wagon or the Bimmer, and time and time again Mother Nature would thwart our attempts. Maddy being Maddy when a failed attempt happened she would take me someplace else to see amazing trees and landscapes. Carmanah Walbran valley, Uclulet, Tofino, Gold River, Campbell River, the Gulf Islands. If we couldn't get to the Tree, she would make sure we got somewhere special - all I had to do was drive and trust her.
After yet another failed attempt in March 2004 Maddy turned to me and said, “It’s time we get a Jeep”.
With that simply statement we up’ed our game - out went the Olds ‘wagon in came the 2003 Jeep Liberty (Renegade Edition).
Faith (as we called the Jeep) would enable us to get places my previous cars would not.
That was that - We Own a Jeep - Fuck You Mother Nature, I am coming for my tree.
Famous last words.
Three years of trying and three years of not getting there. Sometimes we got a little bit off pavement, other times I was crawling over down trees, cutting fallen trees, balancing on three wheels, driving over mudslides - yes we got farther than we ever had before, but there was always something that stopped us.
Kids grow, life changes, the Jeep was too small. Enter a 1989 GMC Safari mini-van. It could haul all the kids stuff and still get down the back roads. On with a set of AT tires, a rear locker installed, under armour to protect the important parts and we had our new adventure truck.
We tried with that truck until late September 2008 when my partner’s health took a turn for the worse and all plans to get to the Tree went out the window.
The next two years would see changes in my life I never believed I would go through. Pain I didn’t know my soul was capable of surviving. From time to time she and I would talk and she would apologize that she had let me down on my quest and I would tell her “maybe it wasn’t meant to be - after all, it’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey and those you share it with”. I had the better part of nine amazing years going on crazy back woods adventures. I had spent time with my best friend doing things I had dreamed of my whole life. It was a hard reminder nothing lasts forever and life is not guaranteed - Thankfully she would survive but us as a unit was no more.
2010 I would find myself with an Audi GT80 Quattro (factory race edition with lockers) and I started dragging my eleven year old daughter along with me. Girlfriends would eventually come into my life and some would make the attempt with me. After the Audi was a ’95 Volvo 850, a 1982 Volvo 245.
And time and time again I couldn’t make it to the tree. By the early 2010’s the original road that got you there had been wiped out completely and a newer back road was being cut into the forest, but this road was not car friendly - it really did require truck and ideally a four wheel drive.
Time…
It flies by. One day you’re 26, the next you are a week away from being 52 (April 5).
On March 29, 2022 at 4:09 P.M. I finally made it to Red Creek Fir.
It took an hour and a half of driving east and north of Port Renfrew in my new to me 2002 GMC Jimmy. Along for the journey was one of my best friends, a fellow photographer, a person who saved my life once upon a time, Snowman (the nickname is another story). Snowman had no idea what getting to this Tree meant to me until I turned and said, “I get to scratch a Bucket List item off my list today”, I had simply said lets go out for a drive and with that left camp for a drive.
From where we pulled off to park is was 0.56 KM with an elevation gain of 150 feet to reach the Tree.
Yeah I cried.
The smile on my face was priceless. The twinkle in my eye speaks volumes.
This photo is for Maddy. Love you Woman. This photo is for Snowman. Love you so much - thanks for being part of this journey and part of the story - I couldn’t have done it without you. This photo is for all of my friends and family who never gave up on me, never quit on me and always believed in me. I love you all so much - Thank You. This photo is for six year old Me - You Did It.

What will ESPN’s coverage of the NHL look like next season?
Tumblr media
The network’s coverage starts with the July 21 Seattle expansion draft, hosted by Chris Fowler on ESPN2. John Buccigross will host the NHL Draft two days later. Those shows will be produced by NHL Network.
When Gross spoke over the phone this past week, ESPN (which reportedly paid $410 million a year for seven years of NHL rights) and Turner ($225 million a year over the same period) still hadn’t divvied the games. The NHL had yet to release its 2021-22 schedule. Its puck- and player-tracking data has not seen the light of day.
“One thing we’re trying to get our arms around is what analytics teams and coaches use to showcase in our game coverage, our studio coverage,” Gross said. “Camera positions is another thing we’re looking at, talking to the league to see how we can showcase and document the games.”
Strategy and speed are the buzzwords Gross hears in his daily conversations with NHL people. Capturing both, while serving hard-core fans, hooking viewers from the massive pool of casual sports viewers who don’t give hockey much thought, attracting diverse genders and backgrounds . . . all are among Gross’s concerns.
“There has to be a level of entertainment without it being forced,” he said. “There’s really nothing worse on TV than forced fun. We have to find our spots, when we get [Chris] Chelios and [Mark] Messier together, who have a relationship. We’ll mix and match with other folks.”
Chelios and Messier, along with Steve Levy, will likely work the major events. “We know how that works,” Gross said. Hearing the two Hall of Famers, owners of some sharp elbows, chime in on player safety decisions should be interesting.
While he may not be hockey’s answer to Charles Barkley, Chelios does seem like a straight shooter. In a phone call, he acknowledged he wasn’t looking for a gig when he reached out to ESPN after the announcement. He was calling as a dad, hoping that his daughter, Lightning TV reporter Caley Chelios, was on the network’s radar.
“I like to think I’ll call it like it is,” said Chelios, 59, “Even though it’s a little different than when I played, hockey’s hockey.”
Messier, Chelios, Hilary Knight, Ray Ferraro, Brian Boucher, and Cassie Campbell-Pascall were among the first names Gross mentioned when speaking about his roster, but a lineup has yet to be solidified. He noted that women will be featured prominently in on-air roles.
The list of local connections is long, from Boucher (Woonsocket, R.I.), A.J. Mleczko (Nantucket/Harvard), former Red Sox play-by-play man Sean McDonough (Boston), Buccigross (who has Boston roots), Rick DiPietro (Winthrop/Boston University), ex-Boston College Eagles Blake Bolden and Bob Wischusen, and Emily Kaplan, a former Globie.
Gross said another fan favorite from the past, play-by-play announcer Gary Thorne, remains an option. He spoke with the agent for Thorne, 73, this past week.
“We’re not done yet,” Gross said. “We want to see what the schedule looks like, and what other decisions we have to make. We still have time.”
What’s the game-changing idea that will separate ESPN? It won’t be glow pucks and robots (fun as they were for younger fans in the ’90s). What’s hockey’s version of the K-Zone?
“Some people thought the first-and-10 line would be too intrusive,” Gross mused. “Now you can’t really watch a game without it.”
AWARD SEASON
One voter’s ballot in depth
Tumblr media
Connor McDavid became the first unanimous MVP since Wayne Gretzky in 1982, collecting all 100 first-place votes for the Hart Memorial Trophy.DARRYL DYCK/Associated Press
I consider it a privilege to vote on year-end NHL awards as part of my duties with the Professional Hockey Writers Association. I’m not alone. My peers and I want to get it right.
When it came to this season’s MVP, I believe we did.
Connor McDavid earned all 100 first-place votes for the Hart Trophy, becoming the second unanimous MVP ever (Wayne Gretzky, 1982). McDavid’s 105 points in 56 games goes down as one of the most dominant seasons in league history. He was playing at a different speed than everyone else.
In the voting bloc — trimmed from about 175 to 100 members, and dispersed regionally to address imbalances created by the divisional-only schedule — we saw some refreshingly progressive thinking, and as always, some strange calls. One Edmonton writer voted McDavid’s teammate, Leon Draisaitl, second for the Selke. Draisaitl made strides this season, but it would be generous to call him an above-average defensive forward, much less elite.
In this space last year, I delved into my methodology, which blends in-person viewings, video study, and number-crunching. Obviously this season, I relied more on the latter two. I was among the few beat writers who traveled all season, but I only watched the East Division up close.
My ballot, and some quick takes:
Hart Trophy — 1. McDavid; 2. Auston Matthews; 3. Nathan MacKinnon; 4. Aleksander Barkov; 5. Brad Marchand.
Relatively easy calls. McDavid was incredible, and the other four were the driving forces on good teams. Marchand was ranked as high as No. 2 on six ballots.
Norris Trophy — 1. Adam Fox; 2. Cale Makar; 3. Charlie McAvoy; 4. Dougie Hamilton; 5. MacKenzie Weegar.
A youth movement, and an ECAC/Hockey East top three. Makar (UMass) missed 12 games, or 21 percent of the season, leaving the door open for Fox (Harvard), who was the Rangers’ MVP in his second season. McAvoy (BU) might be the best five-on-five defender in the game. Weegar opened eyes after Aaron Ekblad’s injury. Eleven blue liners earned top-three votes. Victor Hedman was down-ballot for me, after an injury-plagued regular season. Don’t ask me why someone gave Kris Letang a first-place vote. Fun fact: Fox is the first player of Jewish descent to win a major NHL award.
Calder Trophy — 1. Kirill Kaprizov; 2. Jason Robertson; 3. Alex Nedeljkovic; 4. Josh Norris; 5. Igor Shesterkin.
Kaprizov (27 goals and 51 points in 55 games) was a slam dunk, though Robertson had a brief midseason run that made it interesting.
Lady Byng Trophy — 1. Jaccob Slavin; 2. Jared Spurgeon; 3. Barkov; 4. Roope Hintz; 5. Johnny Gaudreau.
I’ve said before that writers should not vote for this. Referees should. Slavin, an elite defender playing heavy minutes, committed one penalty all season (for shooting the puck over the glass). Good enough for me.
Selke Trophy — 1. Barkov; 2. Patrice Bergeron; 3. Joel Eriksson Ek; 4. Phillip Danault; 5. Joe Pavelski.
Barkov had a strong MVP case, but his 200-foot excellence was properly recognized here. Bergeron is still Bergeron. Could see Danault, after his lockdown playoffs, be front of mind for a lot of voters next season.
The PWHA does not vote on the Vezina Trophy (the general managers selected Marc-Andre Fleury), but we do pick the year-end All-Star teams. My goalies, in order, were Andrei Vasilevskiy, Fleury, and Juuse Saros. We also pick All-Rookie teams. I had Kaprizov, Robertson, and Norris as my forwards, Ty Smith and K’Andre Miller as my defensemen, and Nedeljkovic in goal.
ETC.
League will not rush to judgment

Commissioner Gary Bettman said the league is waiting for an independent review of the Blackhawks alleged cover-up of sexual abuse before proceeding.Karl B DeBlaker/Associated Press
The alleged cover-up of sexual assault by the Blackhawks was the leading topic in Gary Bettman’s annual pre-Stanley Cup Final news conference this past week. Rightfully so.
Bettman said the league learned of the allegations “relatively recently” and will wait for an independent review.
According to a lawsuit filed in May, a former Blackhawks player alleges he and another player were assaulted by then-video coach Brad Aldrich during the team’s 2010 championship run. The team’s leadership, which included current GM Stan Bowman, were allegedly informed of the incident by then-skills coach Paul Vincent, whom the players had told.
Aldrich later worked at a high school in Michigan, where he was convicted of sexual assault involving a student. He is now on Michigan’s sex offender registry.
Multiple ex-Blackhawks, including Nick Boynton, Daniel Carcillo (then with the Flyers), and Brent Sopel, spoke out this past week. One unnamed player told The Athletic that “every guy on the team knew.” Captain Jonathan Toews took issue with that, telling that outlet he didn’t hear about the allegations until the end of that summer. He said he couldn’t say for sure if the team “mishandled” the situation.
Bettman, a former lawyer, pumped the brakes. “Let us see what the investigation reveals, and then we can figure out what comes next,” he said. “I think everyone is jumping too far, too fast. This is going to be handled appropriately and professionally, and done right.”
Let’s hope so.
Beijing Olympics not a given
Tumblr media

Later in his Q&A, Bettman shared the league’s “real concerns” over whether it was “sensible” to have a two-week shutdown for the 2022 Beijing Olympics.
Wait, what?
After sitting out 2018 — and watching interest in Olympic hockey wane — the NHL and NHLPA last summer collectively bargained to participate in the 2022 and 2026 Winter Olympics, pending further agreement with both parties, the IIHF, and IOC. But there is no plan yet.
COVID-19 variants remain a worry, and NBC isn’t likely to lobby on the NHL’s inclusion following the expiration of the TV deal. The NHL hopes to release its 2021-22 schedule shortly after the Cup Final.
“Time is running very short,” Bettman said, which came as disappointing news to Tampa Bay’s Victor Hedman.
“The Olympics is one of the biggest dreams of mine and I haven’t been able to participate in one. This might be the last chance I get. That sucks to hear,” said Hedman, who was left off Team Sweden in 2014. “When you get an opportunity to represent your country on the biggest stage, it’s one of those things that you’ll probably never forget. For me, it’s obviously something I’ve been dreaming about my whole life and something I want to do before I hang up my skates.”
Pride working on title defense

The NWHL’s Boston Pride are deep into an Isobel Cup summer, hauling the trophy from New England lake houses to the Grand Canyon.
As he preps for a title defense, coach Paul Mara is playing his cards close. After a few defections, he’s using his newfound salary-cap space — the league doubled the ceiling to $300,000 — to bring in some outside help.
“Working on a few things,” he said.
The NWHL is feeling momentum entering its seventh season. An influx of sponsorship dollars, visibility from its Isobel Cup playoffs broadcast on NBCSN, and a lot of player raises have elevated the mood.
Since last month, the four franchises under league control — the Buffalo Beauts, Connecticut Whale, Metropolitan Riveters, and Minnesota Whitecaps — were sold to private owners, making it a league of six independent clubs. Expansion is on the horizon, with Montreal a primary target.
Also notable: This past week’s draft, which was streamed on Twitch, included appearances from a range of pro sports personalities, including NHL league and team executives, and USA Hockey reps. The NWHL hasn’t always had such vocal support.
For all the growth, players aren’t yet earning a living wage. Contracts are yearly. Outside opportunities create a talent drain.
The Pride lost president Hayley Moore to the AHL (vice president of hockey operations), replacing her with 1998 US Olympian Colleen Coyne. They are searching for a GM, after Karilyn Pilch this past week signed on with the Chicago Blackhawks’ scouting and player development department.
They also need a few good forwards. Mary Parker, Carlee Turner, and Lexie Laing departed for job and school reasons. Czech standout Tereza Vanisova signed with Leksands IF in Sweden, which will better help her participate in a demanding Olympic training schedule.
League MVP Jillian Dempsey, recovered from shoulder surgery, returns with All-Star linemates McKenna Brand and Christina Putigna, the No. 1 defense pair of Kaleigh Fratkin (two-time NWHL Defender of the Year) and Mallory Souliotis, and netminders Lovisa Selander and Victoria Hanson. That crew, plus whomever Mara can lure to town, should keep the Pride near the top of the standings.
Unlike last season, when the Pride got a boost from No. 1 overall pick Sammy Davis (BU) and six drafted rookies, the draft won’t have a major impact. Because they lost their 2021 first- and second-round picks when they traded up to select Davis, and dealt their third-rounder to Buffalo for future considerations, the Pride picked in the fourth and fifth rounds (Weston’s Finley Frechette and Beverly’s Abby Nearis, both forwards).
The NWHL’s player pool was thinned after the NCAA granted players an extra year of eligibility, leading many of the top draft-eligible players to return to school. Because of that, Boston isn’t the only team that believes next year’s draft will be loaded.
Loose pucks

Bruce Cassidy (left) has been promoting from within, with assistant coach Jay Pandolfo (center) leaving for Boston University.Winslow Townson/Associated Press
The Bruins have promoted from within of late, calling up coaches from Providence and the player development ranks. It makes sense that fourth-year P-Bruins coach Jay Leach would replace Jay Pandolfo on Bruce Cassidy’s staff, but player development staffers Chris Kelly and Jamie Langenbrunner will also get a look. Like Pandolfo, they were two-way forwards with long NHL résumés . . . As for Pandolfo, the move to BU gives him a shorter path to a head coaching gig. Albie O’Connell, who is entering the final year of his deal, has had a spotty run . . . Bruins strength and conditioning assistant Kenny Whittier also made the move to BU . . . A few first-timers joined NHL benches this past week, including two ex-players, Alex Tanguay (Detroit assistant) and Tuomo Ruutu (Florida assistant), and André Tourigny (Arizona coach). The latter move was particularly interesting, for a league that often recycles head coaches . . . Toews, after a year out of the spotlight with a mysterious illness, is back on the ice. He posted a video message to fans after a practice, saying doctors told him he has “chronic immune response syndrome,” a catch-all term for constant, debilitating stress reactions. Still dealing with a few symptoms, the Blackhawks’ captain believes the condition was brought on by a nasty bout with COVID-19 in February 2020, before the pandemic hit in full; the toll of 13 NHL seasons; and the year-round hockey training schedule he’s followed since he was a young teenager. “I think there’s a lot of things that just piled up,” he said, “where my body just fell apart.” He hopes to return in October . . . Edmonton trimmed Ryan Nugent-Hopkins’s $6 million cap hit, but took a beating on term, when it locked up the No. 2 center to an eight-year, $41 million deal with a full no-move clause. He will be 36 when it expires. “No contract is perfect,” GM Ken Holland acknowledged . . . Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon’s take on game jersey ads, which are coming to the NHL sooner rather than later: “If we look like Formula One or NASCAR, that’d be fine with me.” . . . Glad to see college athletes everywhere get a chance to make some cash off their name and image, following the Supreme Court’s hammering of the paternalistic NCAA. A small step, long overdue.
