Growing up, you never had an affinity for fashion. 

Your mom was the one who always dressed you and middle school was always that awkward fashion era of everyone’s lives. In high school the different outfits everyone wore had started to pique your interest, wanting to finally find your own style and make yourself feel more confident overall. 

By college you had hit your stride and everyone in your life was incredibly confused when you decided to major in fashion business. Your dad was over the moon that you added the business side of it, being a finance director himself, and while your mom was still confused, she enjoyed the new fashion advice from her daughter. 

You grew up in North Carolina, heading to FIT in New York for your undergrad before returning home. You spent that summer trying your best to figure out what to do with this new degree, when your life intertwined with Seth Jarvis. Through a mess of awkward run ins, late nights, and a final first date that sealed the deal, you were quick to realize that Seth was it for you. Three years later and you and Seth were closer than ever. He was on his way to another playoff run while you had been living your dream job for a couple of years now. 

As April loomed near and the season was coming to an end, the wag groupchat had started to pick up. The girls were discussing playoff chances and who should be planning the wag jackets this year and you were voted the number one choice. You tried to get out of it, worried that what you made wouldn’t be good enough but the girls shut you down quickly, knowing whatever you make would be iconic. 

You found yourself dreaming up ideas in the middle of meetings, doodling in the corners of your notebooks, looking up colors and fabrics, and finally caving to create a full fledged design when Seth had come bounding home with the news of a playoff clinch. 

The drawing you come up with is a high school varsity style jacket in black, the front saying Carolina in uppercase bold red letters, with the words cause above one pocket and chaos on the other side. One sleeve has the previous cup win dates while the other sleeve has the boy’s number and the original canes logo underneath it. Lastly, the bottom hem of the jacket is decorated with the storm warning flags similar to the boys jerseys and classic name and number on the back in the same color and font as the Carolina. 

Ever since finalizing the design, you instantly headed to the store and grabbed a blank black varsity jacket and started your work. You had fallen so deep into the job, focusing on each tiny detail for your prototype that you didn’t even hear Seth coming home. You had just finished on the front when you heard the door of your office creak open and you turn to see Seth with a tired smile on his lips. 

“Hey there pretty girl,” he says, sauntering his way into the room and your heart skips at the sight of him. You’re distracted for a moment just at the sight of him, but when you notice his eyes flicker over to your current project you flinch and get up. 

“No!” you screech, taking quick steps towards your boyfriend and covering his eyes with your hand. Seth freezes against you, concerned in his movements but when he hears a breathy laugh escape from your lips he knows everything is okay. 

“Uh why can’t I look?” 

“It’s bad luck!” you squeal, nudging your boyfriend out of your office and Seth rolls his eyes, his lashes fluttering lightly against your hand. 

“I’m sorry did I propose and forget or something?” he asks when you finally drop your hand from his eyes and shut your office door behind you. 

“No but if you are going to propose I’d wait till off season,” you respond cheekily and Seth grins. 

“I was making the wag jackets,” you tell him, slinging your arms around his neck and bringing him closer to you. 

“Mmm were you?” 

Seth leans down, pressing a soft kiss to your neck, trailing one up to your cheek and then finally on your lips, his hips pushing you back against the door so you’re caged in his embrace. 

“Mhm,” you murmur against his lips and you feel his grin, the scruff of his beard scratching against your skin. “And you need to go so I can finish them.” 

“Or we could do this,” he says and before you know it, Seth has grabbed you around the waist, throwing you over his shoulder and marching his way towards your shared bedroom, your protests of work and prototypes deaf to his ears. 

The week leading up to the first playoff game was complete chaos. You hadn’t seen Seth at all, occasionally when he was slipping out of bed and you were just slipping in, bumping into each other when he was out the door and you were coming in and so on. 

You were finalizing all of the wag jackets, making sure the matching shoes had arrived and were in good condition as well. You had decided to add a pair of nikes with the players last name on the side to match the jackets and you couldn’t wait to see how each girl would style their outfit. One by one as each girl received their jacket you would be on the other end of a million texts and several facetime calls of the girls freaking out about the job you did. You couldn’t help it, you started to feel good about your work too after being praised so much. 

Unfortunately due to both your schedules, you couldn’t see Seth before the playoff game but promised to make it in time for warmups. You and a few of the girls head out together, taking pictures both at your place and when you get to the arena. You head straight for the front, your nerves getting the best of you and you’re bouncing up and down on your heels waiting for Seth to come out on the ice. 

Somehow even with the nerves you miss his initial entrance onto the ice. Normally Seth is all serious mode when he starts warmups, only deciding to relax and goof off towards the end of them but when he sees you first, he’s a complete goner. 

You’re facing away from the glass but Seth could spot you from miles away in a crowded area, it truly didn’t matter. Your hair was pulled up and out of the way so everyone could see his last name and jersey number plastered on the back of the black varsity jacket. Your smile is wide and he knows you’ve been nervously fidgeting by the way you twist and bounce as you stand. 

His heart is pounding twice as hard now, not even registering the world around him as he sees you in your heavenly state with his name on your back. His. His jacket. The one that claims you’re his. God, how did he get so lucky? 

He doesn’t know when he stopped paying attention to the movements he was making on his skates until he’s smacking embarrassingly into the glass just before you, startling both you and everyone around. You look up, Seth with an unreadable expression on the other side of the glass and you can’t help the shy smile that creeps onto your lips. 

Seth tries to regain some kind of confidence again, shooting a wink in your direction and mischievous grin before taking off on the ice again. 

You swear your face hurts from smiling and your throat is no doubt sore from the screaming you had done all of game 1. You and the girls make your way down to the tunnel and talk about the events of the game while you wait for the boys. One by one each girl disappears in the arms of her man, you smiling and bidding goodbyes while you impatiently wait for Seth. 

“Is that the future Mrs. Jarvis?” you hear from behind you and you turn to see Jarvy smiling like he just won the damn lottery. 

You rush forward, wrapping your arms around his neck and pressing kisses anywhere you can reach. You exclaim your praise between each kiss and Seth grins shyly against you. 

“You did amazing,” you say leaning back to finally look into your boyfriend's big brown eyes and they shine with pride at your words. 

“Thank you baby,” he says, pressing a kiss to your lips before pulling back and staring at you, his eyes roaming your figure, his fingers tracing the outline of his number on your shoulder and his name on your back. 

“What’s up lover boy?” you ask, nervous under his gaze. 

“You look damn good with my last name,” he murmurs and your face flushes further. 

What Seth doesn’t tell you is that from the first day, he’s known you were the one from him. He doesn’t say that since you had your first date he knew you’d be married one day. He doesn’t say how he wants to spoil his proposal right now and just ask you to marry him because he can’t go another second without having you share his name. 

He doesn’t tell you that one piece of clothing has made him imagine the next 50 years of his life in the matter of seconds. 

But you don’t need to know that. Not yet at least. So Seth settles for another searing kiss to your lips before slinging an arm around your shoulder and leading you home so he can take that jacket off of you and love you properly.

Barbie Dream Besties "Brooklyn": A review

Barbie Dream Besties is a newly released doll line by Mattel, and is a spin off of their main Barbie line. Looks wise, they seem to be a spiritual successor to My Scene, Ever After high, and the more recent Barbie Extra/Barbie Extra Minis. Also trying desperately to compete with LOL and Rainbow High.

They are $20 USD each retail.

I was interested in these for three reasons: 1) I liked Ever After High and My Scene. 2) They have much more quality outfits than I tend to see from modern Barbie. 3) @queenofsquids enjoyment of them made me hopeful I'd like them too.

So do I? Let's find out.

I choose the character Brooklyn as I like her face up the best.

Her packaging is the standard plastic clam shell that seems to be all over the doll aisle anymore. I can't say I love it. I miss the cardboard boxes, so much easier to open and so much less plastic.

This box isn't super great aesthetically either. There's a lot going on in the service of nothing.

Which is a shame, because I do really like the actual character art on the box. It's super cute and matches the dolls really well. It would pop even better if the rest of the box was a smidge simpler. Sometimes less is more.

We also get a short character bio for Brooklyn. She wants to be a choreographer, loves making dance routines, video editing, and creative writing. Despite her favorite color being listed as pink, she has no pink in her outfit and only one pink accessory.

Here is the box without the cover. This is what I meant when I said the box design was doing a lot for nothing. Over packaging isn't just a problem with Mattel dolls of course, MGA is arguably worse, but it's still frustrating.

Brooklyn herself is very pretty though. I tried very hard to pick one without a wonky face, but the way she's posed makes it very hard to tell.

I think one of her eyes is slightly bigger than the other. It's not enough to bother me at least. That said, so many of these were VERY wonky at the store. I would not buy these online unless you can see the specific doll you're getting. The QC is all over the place.

Here are all the accessories she comes with.

I do appreciate that all her accessories tie into her interests and character. That said, these are hit and miss.

The purse is nice, and does open.

The dog is okay, but I don't really care for these types of doll pets. It looks more like an in-universe toy than what's supposed to be an animal.

I initially liked that the phone and case were separate, until I tried to put the phone in the case and it didn't fit. It will not go in there. If I force it in, it just pops right back out.

It's a shame because I liked the 80's Barbie logo case, but without the phone in it, it looks weird when the doll is holding it.

At least the phone fits into the ring light stand.

May I also say some of these accessories feel really flimsy? The phone and Ipad are VERY thin plastic.

The boom box in hollow and unpainted.

I wish instead of having seven mid accessories we could've had two or three really good ones. Or nixed all of them and given her a stand. The doll herself is nice enough to deserve a stand I think.

Let's look at Brooklyn. She's pretty darn cute. She stands at the standard 11", and has saran hair with tinsel.

Her outfit isn't my favorite though. Mattel stop giving your dolls ugly fur sleeved varsity jackets challenge. This could've been so cute as just a regular varsity jacket.

Despite being ugly, the jacket is made pretty well. Though a button was already falling off mine. That poor QC strikes again.

Though I suppose it's moot as I doubt I'll ever put this jacket back on her ever again.

Now that she's free of that ugly thing, you can see how nice the rest of her outfit is. I didn't realize how much I missed dolls getting to wear neutrals until I saw her plain denim skirt and white tank top.

It's simple, but she's dressed like a real person. Plus, I can easily pair these pieces with a lot of other outfits. Doll wardrobes need pieces like this for mixing and matching.

Body wise she's a bit smaller than Barbie, and her feet are a little bit larger. This body reminds me a lot of the current bodies for the Disney Princess line now that Mattel has it back, though those have larger feet. If I can find the one I have, I'll do a body comparison to those later.

Her sculpt in three views. The Ever After High comparisons are very apt, though the screening itself is more reminiscent of My Scene mixed with a little bit of G3 Monster High.

For comparison, here's an actual EAH doll next to her. Brooklyn's head is just a smidge larger, but balanced out better with larger eyes, thicker brows, and bigger lips.

After this, I got Brooklyn redressed with just a few changes...

I replaced her jacket with this vintage Barbie and the Rockers one, added a necklace, and hey! Now she gets to wear her favorite color.

Final thoughts?

It's a good doll, but the quality control issues, on top of the same BS Mattel throws on all of it's dolls anymore, is dragging it down.

The fact you have to look through every single one of the shelf to make sure you're not getting a crappy one is exhausting. Plus, kids don't do that. They're going to get home with their new doll and then realize as they open it something's wrong. Kids don't deserve that.

The accessories are mostly cheap and not special enough to justify their existence. The purse, phone with case, and ring light would've been enough if they were made a bit better.

The outfit is well made, and a huge improvement over what I see in the main Barbie line, even if I don't like all the design choices, but again, that's if you get one without QC issues.

The doll herself is super cute though, and screw it, I like the tinsel. Fight me.

Overall I really love this doll, I just wish picking one out wasn't a hassle. Hell, I even bought a second one already.

I got inspired enough I wanted to repaint one, so I purposely bought this wonky Renee because she had the worst face up out of everyone at the store.

So I think there's definitely potential here. If this line continues, I hope they can improve the way G3 Monster High has improved from it's first wave.

I hope this can be the start of Mattel revitalizing it's Barbie line as well. It needs it. See ya next time.

Wearing their Colors

Transformer headcanon:

On wearing clothes with their colors/ designs and motifs and showing it to your cybertronian partner.

A/N: I FUCKING MISSED MEGATRONS BIRTHDAY *this is to make up for my sins* also sorry if Bee's part seems rushed.

Megatron:

Armor

You had to get it specially commissioned, which took a lot of design.

You had to have it made of metal, too. It was pretty heavy, even though the group that made it said the armor was lighter.

You wore silver, slightly heeled, thigh-high boots. Some of your thighs were exposed but covered with black fabric. Like him, you had matching sharp shoulder pads. You had a medium-length skirt tass in the back of your armor instead of armor in the front that matched his modesty planting.

Your Breast planting matched his chassis; you had the Decepticon symbol in the same spot as he was.

The final piece to match him was a Valkyrie-styled tiara with the same spikes on his helm.

You were so excited to show him it, hoping he would like it. Currently waiting in his Habisuite, sitting on his desk, looking at the shiny metal on the walls to see your blurry reflection.

Soon enough, you heard his booming footsteps approaching the door. A hiss sounded off, and you spun around and stood up as tall as possible while trying to calm your nerves.

He's still looking at the data pad in his hand while he walks over to the desk and sits down; you strut up to his arm to get his attention, pressing yourself on him the best you can.

He sets down the data pad when he notices the hard silver on his arm; he ex vents a bit louder for you to be able to see while giving you a lustful once-over

You twirl a little when you lift yourself off of him; you step up directly in front of him, and he lifts one of his servos to drag the tip of his digit over your upper thigh armor. You drag the tip of his finger to the matching Decepticon symbol on your chest, and he lets out an appreciative sigh at the sight of it.

He leans his helm down and kisses you and your armor before he speaks

"What a lovely Decepticon you make."

Optimus prime

It came in a pair of gogo boots and a matching jacket

You gave yourself one last look over in the mirror before you went out to meet with Optimus

He was finally free from most of his meetings on the newly built Cybertron government for the week, so he sent out a message to you.

His message was perfect timing as you finished your little surprise for him. You smooth out the leather of the jacket and zip up the boots.

You told him to wait at the base and that you'd meet him there. You grab your skateboard and make the fifteen-minute commute in relative silence. Walking through the special entrance for humans, you watch the lights of the ceiling.

You arrive at his room and text him quickly, telling him you are outside. The doors swish open, startling you. Peering inside, you see him looking at data pads at his desk, still doing work when he was supposed to be taking a break.

You walk closer to where he's sitting before giving a whistle to grab his attention. He looks down at you, and his optics widen when he sees your clothes; he leans over and grabs you to look closer.

He ex vents softly while taking it all in. You match his finish. A cute little mini him in human form that's all his. It makes his spark beat so fast in his chassis.

He presses his helm against your head before he whispers to you,

"My little Prime."

Bumblebee

A Yellow and Black Varsity Jacket

The jacket had his numbers alongside his name on the sleeves of it

It took forever to find the jacket that perfectly matched his colors; you just took it upon yourself to sew on all the decals that represent your alien lover.

You're sitting around the Autobot base while waiting for Bee; you showed Ratchet the jacket, and he gave you a small smile before returning to work.

Three vehicles pulled in, and you raced to the yellow one.

Their younger human charges got out of them, and the Cybertronians transformed into their bipedal mode

Miko and Raf noticed your jacket first; Miko excitedly pointed it out to the rest before asking you to make one for her and Bulkhead; you whispered to Raf that you'd let him borrow it when it was just him and Bee.

You told Jack that maybe him and Arcee could have a matching biker jacket for him, she chuckled with a small huff

The five of them walked off, and your lover and you were left. He hadn't made a single beep since they arrived; you tilt your head at him and smile. He leans down to pick you up; sitting in his palm, he moves the jacket's fabric slightly to look at all the words representing him.

He brings you close to his face and beeps out a sweet 'I love you.' just for you and him.

- miku is two inches taller than rin, since she's older. rin despises this. she'd wear platform boots like miku if her signature outfit didn't have whatever sneaker nightmare it does

- meiko and kaito are their mutual emergency contacts, obviously, but they have each other right after that (they also know each other's passwords; this isn't intentional, both found out by accident, both know that they both know, and neither have changed their code)

- gumi's the one to steal miku's pigtails, but rin has done it multiple times (and frames gumi for it, though recently gumi started fighting back)

Why on EARTH was the cast of The Owl House so drippy?!

(A sort of breakdown from someone that's only kinda sorta kept up with the show... Me, Guy.)

Spoilers too, I guess...

Look at our favorite witch-in-training, Luz Noceda. As we can all see here, she's wearing Eda's varsity jacket when she attended Hexside. Level with me, the jacket alone was enough to be a super-dope outfit, but she took it one step further and even wore matching pants, too! Heck, she even tied up her hair in a bun, for crying out loud! She kept the aesthetic of "I'm able to stay calm, but I'm not afraid to kick your butt when the time comes."

She wanted to look fancy while she boogied with her soon-to-be girlfriend(At the time, anyway), so she decided to wear what exactly? A tutu, and a frickin' tuxedo! Wonderful! Fabulous! It's all so wild, but you can see that not only did Luz have a plan, it worked danged-near flawlessly! And of course, she decided to wear dance shoes, as well.

Okay, you asked for it.

Don't say I didn't warn you.

Freaking. Bam. Meet Titan Luz.

This is near perfection in cartoon form. Luz looks like she told Amity's parents, "Your daughter calls me mommy, too." She looks deranged in the best way possible.

First and foremost, the cloak nearly perfectly displays everything she's done throughout the series. The glyph on her chest, the bones appearing along the tips and edges of it, referencing her "magic donor", Arin Hanson- I mean Papa Titan(...Is he just called Papa King by the TOH fandom, or am I being dumb? Since, y'know, he's King's dad? I don't know, but back to the comedic analysis).

For Hootie's sake, she even somehow has longer, puffier hair, giving Eda a wink-wink-nudge-nudge without saying a thing. Even further, her eyes turned a pitch-black with yellow irises, making sure that King himself is involved with references as well.

Y'know, this reminds me of a character that I've had written out for a while. Y'all won't see her for a long, long while, but just know that she's tied to this in a way. Backstory aside, she has this one... form, let's call it, where she kind of becomes a vampire. This aspect of her is derived from an art account I follow, I won't say who until the time comes, but she also likes using her legs as her main means of attack, not only calling back to Izuku from MHA, but to her friend who she loves dearly, like a family member.

Back to the main point, I love characters that reference multiple other characters they have a connection to without being overbearing, which is why I love Titan Luz's design. Above all else, this proves that Luz really cared for everyone that has helped carry her this far, and was willing to fight for them, even after her death. And Eda even teaches her magic the way she said she would as early as the second episode of the series, iirc. And, something even more wild, is that Luz sort of looks like Azura, as well, even using one of her quotes for the finishing blow on Belos...

"...NOW EAT THIS, SUCKAAA!"

Admittedly, I don't know much about Luz's palisman, but I do indeed see that they're a cute little snek dude! ...Like how Luz freaked out the school and her principal with those snakes in the first episode(At least, I recall it being the first episode)! Everything about Luz's design is just... It's all just. So. Good.

...Look. I originally wanted to make a fun little ha-ha post about how stylish the characters from The Owl House were, as I highly respect this show and loved it, from the moment I saw King, to the very end of the series where the Collector gave Luz and the Hexsquad the ability to travel between realms, but seeing this transformation and taking the time to dissect her Titan Form design... It really brought me to tears. Not just because the show's actually over, but because I loved it with everything I could give. The way the show handled its characters, even with the rushed development that Disney demanded(Those freaking warm toilet seats), was phenomenal, given the circumstances.

I'll make a post talking more about King and just... him, I guess, but this post is already long enough as it is. Maybe even Eda, Hunter, Gus and Willow as well, if this post really makes its rounds.

what style do you think modern abby dina and ellie would have? ♡♡♡♡

i honestly think ellie would have the same style that she has in tlou2. flannels and a little bit of a grandpa style (thinking about her rocking joel’s jacket) kind off… sunky core y’know. always uses converse no matter the season, has a pair of black headphones she takes with her everywhere with a bunch of stickers on. she wears a lot of rings and bracelets, and she has a signature necklace with joel’s old guitar pick. i think she’d like green a lot, and her room would be be filled with plants and those plastic plant vines you can hang on your wall/from your roof. nerdy posters all over her walls, with planets and dinosaurs and nerd stuff. starts getting patchwork tattoos as she gets older, many of them designed by herself, a few professional and a few stick’n’pokes.

as for dina i headcanon her as someone who would be enrolled in a billion different dance classes so she uses clothes that she can dance in, and that looks good dancing in. i think dina wears a lot of darker shades of red, and that she likes to wear long flowy skirts. i also see dina with a lot of piercings in her ears. she can keep earrings in while dancing, and they’re more comfortable to dance with than the most necklaces and bracelets. also think she’d like floral patterns and stuff on her clothes. also think dina would keep her hair down more often, and every once in a while she’d show up with some crazy coloured highlights in her hair. hot pink, blue, hell she even tried green once. in general she likes colours and don’t like dressing too plain.

abby is a total gym rat. mostly wears vintage/plain t-shirts that show of her biceps, likes to wear cargo pants or sweatpants. when it’s warm abby wears knee length gym shorts or jorts. abby always has her airpods in wherever she goes. mostly wear her hair in a braid or ponytail cause it’s easier when playing sports or working out. has a varsity jacket (obviously she plays whatever sport the university she goes to is the best at, volleyball, basketball, american football, football.) abby is a nike girl everyday of the week, and strictly wears airforce ones when she isn’t in the gym or on the (insert sport here)’s field. rarely wears jewellery because she would have to take them out all the time for her sport, but does have one earring on each ear . i can see her with very simple gold studs that her dad got her years ago. will walk around with her girlfriends scrunchie on the wrist at all times

And if I talk about Grant's civilian fashion sense, I have to talk about Ray's, so here you go.

Unlike Grant, Ray does have a secret identity and is actively trying to maintain his civilian life as much as possible. At one point he thinks he's lost his powers, and his immediate feeling is relief. He doesn't quite have to be dragged kicking and screaming into being a hero, but it takes a lot for him to accept it. So unlike Grant, we see him in ordinary clothes quite frequently, and he undergoes a style evolution that occurs alongside his character arc.

One thing that does stay pretty consistent is that this boy is an absolute fashion plate by 1990s standards.

We're introduced to Ray at the moment when he first leaves his house to deliberately expose himself to daylight and activate his powers. He's just eighteen, so he dresses like a teenager. Very specifically an early 1990s teenager. For someone who has barely ever left his house, he seems to put a lot of effort into maintaining a fashionable appearance. He's got a stylish fade haircut with lightning designs shaved into the sides, a piercing, and that distinctive jacket that will become part of his costume as well as something he wears ordinarily ("either a drum major or a diehard Michael Jackson fan," his mom comments when she first sees him in it).

Lots of overly long T-shirts worn with jeans and chunky sneakers. When he learns how to create light construct clothing (his powers when activated will burn off clothing if not protected, and this leads to a lot of embarrassing situations at first) and needs some civilian clothing to change into, what he creates is possibly one of the most 1990s teenage-boy outfits ever: a football jersey (with his surname on the back) tucked into baggy jeans, chunky sneakers, and a snapback hat worn, of course, backwards. He wears a variety of bright colors, as further seen in some of his shirts that Dinah Lance borrows while crashing at his place after an injury. For someone who grew up in the dark, he's got an eye for color and what suits his coloring.

The one exception to his particular style is a more conservative black suit, which he wears to the funeral of the uncle whom he believed was his dad. It will show up again later in the Annual, also worn to funerals.

So what does all this tell us about him? It indicates his youthfulness, of course, but also that he's image-conscious enough to care a lot about how he presents himself. He grew up in the public eye as "Night Boy" and, as revealed in his narration and thought bubbles, has a lot of private insecurities. Dressing fashionably is a way for him to take some control over how he is perceived by others. If he presents himself as cool, maybe he can feel that he genuinely is.

At the start of his second solo series, Ray is dealing with being out on his own as a technical adult. He has a fast food job that he hates and he lives in a crummy one-room apartment with no refrigerator. And it's not that his fashion sense noticeably changes at this point, but his wardrobe becomes more limited, as if to reflect that he can't afford a lot of clothing anymore. He has his jacket, a few T-shirts, jeans, two types of sneakers (the chunky ones and smaller, more traditional ones for times when he needs to make a more adult impression), and that seems to be about it for much of the start of this series.

When he intends to propose to his childhood best friend, he puts together another aggressively 1990s-teenage-boy look: baggy shirt (with baseball logo) and jeans, those sneakers again, and a varsity-like jacket. "I really am a man now," he says to himself in the narration beside this image--but of course he isn't. He's still dressing like a kid, in a reflection of how in many ways he's still not fully matured. He certainly has no business proposing to anybody at this point, and he will not get a yes when he does.

Shortly afterward, he will leave the Justice League Task Force for personal reasons, and this announcement accompanies another change of clothes--a more sedate brown/burgundy bomber jacket instead of his more flashy band jacket (associated with his costume) over his usual T-shirt and jeans. Circumstances are driving him to the desperation of trying to take responsibility for a situation he created, so he is dressing with the intention of being taken more seriously.

And he goes from there to working for Vandal Savage, which signals a huge change in his entire lifestyle. He has a prestigious office job, a good salary, a luxurious condo, a new haircut, and an extensive wardrobe of boxy, broad-shouldered, aggressively 1990s power suits.

Which, by the way, he is rocking. His palette has shifted to a lot of cool tones--blues, grays, greens--that reflect the coldness that is creeping into his character as a result of this job, along with some pink because why not. (That salmon shirt and teal-and-black tie combo from The Ray 1994 #16? Gorgeous.)

All the same, he's a nineteen-year-old who doesn't really know what he's doing, so despite his fancy pocket squares and gold tie clips, there are little fashion faux pas, like wearing white socks with a suit, or suspenders and a belt simultaneously. This isn't who he really is. It's an act.

The more casual clothes almost completely disappear; there's one case of a pale green jacket and purple shirt with jeans and sneakers, worn while mowing his mom's lawn. As time goes on and he's starting to feel more conflicted about his life choices, the suits start to be paired with more casual turtlenecks (very stylish in the 90s). The last civilian ensemble of his solo features this but dispenses with the suit in favor of a winter jacket--more casual but definitely more mature and darker-toned than what he used to wear. An apt reflection of the conclusion of his arc.

From here on, it's off to Canceled Comic Limbo and almost no appearances for him in civilian attire. He is constantly in costume with Young Justice (like the rest of the team is most of the time). His various Freedom Fighters stints have a few clothing changes, I think, but they're not paired with any significant characterization. The current continuity's Ray is a completely different person and not relevant to this discussion.

His second solo is, of course, about a guy who needs a refrigerator. But at the same time, it's about a young adult who needs to learn to dress like a grown-up. Not cosplay as one in a giant suit, but to bring his own persona into the next stage of his life.

OC-tober Day 8: In Their Favorite Outfit

It’s my October prompt list and I get to make the rules (it’s not I did not make these prompts). Notes time.

Clay: He prefers dark colors and sturdy, breathable clothes. He doesn’t wear printed shirts, but he likes simple patterns. Clay’s favorite outfit is dark jeans, running shoes, and his leather jacket over a lightly patterned shirt. He’ll usually fold a bandana into a fancy pocket square and put that in the jacket, just in case he wants to hide his face.

Brian: He got a windbreaker from his baseball team, and likes that more than his actual varsity jacket. He’s not really into clothes. T-shirt and shorts type of guy. He’s probably the best of the three at applying makeup, a skill he acquired as a bit and from various girlfriends.

Sierra: Her workshop gear! Gray baggy cargo pants, a heavy-duty utility belt, steel-toed boots, and a dark blue sweatshirt with the drawstrings tucked in. When it isn’t a safety hazard, she wears copper wire around her wrists and a pair of blue headphones with stickers. She doesn’t like wearing tight clothes and always cuts out the tags.

Marin: He’s loyal to Sondaica emerald and gold. However, Marin has fallen in love with human printed shirts, especially the ones that are a little cliche. His favorite is a dark green one that says “not all who wander are lost”. Maybe if he wears it, that will make it true. He’ll wear sandals with socks if it’s cold. It’s more acceptable in the elven world I promise.

Ryn: When Ryn was a young prodigy, he’d seize any opportunity to walk around in just loose pants and lace-up boots to show off his Voyager tattoos. Now, he’d rather have a shirt on. Ryn likes bold designs, and still has a soft spot for the grids and map-inspired patterns of the Voyagers. This man would order the deaths of thousands while wearing a Hawaiian shirt if he could.

Ishtar: Ishtar’s favorite outfit is a long indigo robe with too many layers to fight in, and a decorative silver cover over her vambrace. She faintly remembers her mother wearing something similar.

Amedi: Ceremonial combat gear. High reinforced boots, detailed armor with the veins glowing red, red war paint and a helmet shaped like the head of a jackal. Can do killer makeup.

Esther: Her favorite outfit is a long skirt and blouse, like what a working woman might have worn a hundred years ago. Her favorite colors are cool jewel-tones, but she’s been trapped in Mercuralis indigo and Kebero rust for basically the rest of her life. Esther also prefers to tie her hair back.
