The CFPB is genuinely making America better, and they're going HARD
On June 20, I'm keynoting the LOCUS AWARDS in OAKLAND.
Let's take a sec here and notice something genuinely great happening in the US government: the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau's stunning, unbroken streak of major, muscular victories over the forces of corporate corruption, with the backing of the Supreme Court (yes, that Supreme Court), and which is only speeding up!
A little background. The CFPB was created in 2010. It was Elizabeth Warren's brainchild, an institution that was supposed to regulate finance from the perspective of the American public, not the American finance sector. Rather than fighting to "stabilize" the financial sector (the mission that led to Obama taking his advisor Timothy Geithner's advice to permit the foreclosure crisis to continue in order to "foam the runways" for the banks), the Bureau would fight to defend us from bankers.
The CFPB got off to a rocky start, with challenges to the unique system of long-term leadership appointments meant to depoliticize the office, as well as the sudden resignation of its inaugural boss, who broke his promise to see his term through in order to launch an unsuccessful bid for political office.
But after the 2020 election, the Bureau came into its own, when Biden poached Rohit Chopra from the FTC and put him in charge. Chopra went on a tear, taking on landlords who violated the covid eviction moratorium:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/04/20/euthanize-rentier-enablers/#cfpb
Then banning payday lenders' scummiest tactics:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/01/29/planned-obsolescence/#academic-fraud
Then striking at one of fintech's most predatory grifts, the "earned wage access" hustle:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/05/01/usury/#tech-exceptionalism
Then closing the loophole that let credit reporting bureaus (like Equifax, who doxed every single American in a spectacular 2019 breach) avoid regulation by creating data brokerage divisions and claiming they weren't part of the regulated activity of credit reporting:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/08/16/the-second-best-time-is-now/#the-point-of-a-system-is-what-it-does
Chopra went on to promise to ban data-brokers altogether:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/04/13/goulash/#material-misstatement
Then he banned comparison shopping sites where you go to find the best bank accounts and credit cards from accepting bribes and putting more expensive options at the top of the list. Instead, he's requiring banks to send the CFPB regular, accurate lists of all their charges, and standing up a federal operated comparison shopping site that gives only accurate and honest rankings. Finally, he's made an interoperability rule requiring banks to let you transfer to another institution with one click, just like you change phone carriers. That means you can search an honest site to find the best deal on your banking, and then, with a single click, transfer your accounts, your account history, your payees, and all your other banking data to that new bank:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/10/21/let-my-dollars-go/#personal-financial-data-rights
Somewhere in there, big business got scared. They cooked up a legal theory declaring the CFPB's funding mechanism to be unconstitutional and got the case fast-tracked to the Supreme Court, in a bid to put Chopra and the CFPB permanently out of business. Instead, the Supremes – these Supremes! – upheld the CFPB's funding mechanism in a 7-2 ruling:
https://www.scotusblog.com/2024/05/supreme-court-lets-cfpb-funding-stand/
That ruling was a starter pistol for Chopra and the Bureau. Maybe it seemed like they were taking big swings before, but it turns out all that was just a warmup. Last week on The American Prospect, Robert Kuttner rounded up all the stuff the Bureau is kicking off:
https://prospect.org/blogs-and-newsletters/tap/2024-06-07-window-on-corporate-deceptions/
First: regulating Buy Now, Pay Later companies (think: Klarna) as credit-card companies, with all the requirements for disclosure and interest rate caps dictated by the Truth In Lending Act:
https://www.skadden.com/insights/publications/2024/06/cfpb-applies-credit-card-rules
Next: creating a registry of habitual corporate criminals. This rogues gallery will make it harder for other agencies – like the DOJ – and state Attorneys General to offer bullshit "delayed prosecution agreements" to companies that compulsively rip us off:
https://www.consumerfinance.gov/about-us/newsroom/cfpb-creates-registry-to-detect-corporate-repeat-offenders/
Then there's the rule against "fine print deception" – which is when the fine print in a contract lies to you about your rights, like when a mortgage lender forces you waive a right you can't actually waive, or car lenders that make you waive your bankruptcy rights, which, again, you can't waive:
https://www.consumerfinance.gov/about-us/newsroom/cfpb-warns-against-deception-in-contract-fine-print/
As Kuttner writes, the common thread running through all these orders is that they ban deceptive practices – they make it illegal for companies to steal from us by lying to us. Especially in these dying days of class action suits – rapidly becoming obsolete thanks to "mandatory arbitration waivers" that make you sign away your right to join a class action – agencies like the CFPB are our only hope of punishing companies that lie to us to steal from us.
There's a lot of bad stuff going on in the world right now, and much of it – including an active genocide – is coming from the Biden White House.
But there are people in the Biden Administration who care about the American people and who are effective and committed fighters who have our back. What's more, they're winning. That doesn't make all the bad news go away, but sometimes it feels good to take a moment and take the W.

Turmoil; Chapter 1
Roman Roy x fem!Reader -read the rest here!
Prompt: slowburn romantic drama, arranged marriage plot line
a/n: thank you to anon for requesting! if you requested this fic, please tell me so I can tag you! I apologize if this reads as unrealistic or too dramatic- but please let me know your thoughts!
Word Count: 2.358k
Nothing. You’d turned yourself into something from nothing.
You’d ended up in New York on your own, running from your past, vying for a fresh start. With a degree from Harvard law in your pocket and an unsatiated hunger for success, it only took one case to change your fortune.
Your boss had pawned the case off on you because it seemed impossible. A man charged for real property fraud, and heaps of evidence to prove it. You initially thought you’d pawn the case off to some other schmuck, until you’d been given an anonymous tip and found a discrepancy in a bit of evidence that unraveled the opposition’s entire case.
It was a massive win- not just for you, but for your entire firm -and it came with a massive raise.
A few years later, you’d amassed an egregious amount of money in total and even more respect from those around you, so you quit and founded your own firm. You’re thankful for everything you have. You stay humble, you’re likable, and you make sure everyone in your employment is as well. It keeps you afloat- New York loves you, but more importantly, they trust you.
It earns you millions.
You’re happy with the life you lead. You frequent charity events, donating whenever you can, staying kind. You know what kindness can feel like during a period of misery. You remember what relief felt like when extended a hand, so you extend yours whenever you can.
You help the people around you. You’re kind to everyone, conduct yourself with grace, and are aware of yourself and those around you.
Maybe that’s why Logan Roy chose you.
He’d written to you a week ago, inviting you to dinner to discuss business prospects. You assume he’s gotten himself into a legal pickle involving some of his questionable activity which some regard as criminal.
When you enter the restaurant, one of his men spawn at your side and lead you into the dimly lit back where nobody is sitting. Your heels click on the marble, your gait not wavering.
“Mr. Roy,” you say when you see him. He gets up, albeit very slowly, and shakes your hand.
“Y/L/N in the flesh.” He sits back down and gestures to the seat across from him. You oblige. “You’ve made quite the name for yourself.”
“I do my best.”
He beckons over a passing waiter. “Get her whatever she wants. Put it on my tab.”
You quietly order a small appetizer and watch him watch you.
“Well, Mr. Roy, I hate beating around the bush. Why am I here?”
“The first case you worked on. Do you remember that man’s name? The one you proved innocent?”
“Connor Frost. I don’t forget. Never showed his face once.”
“About him. For witness protection and press reasons, we were allowed to alter his name in the official papers. We also got away with him never being there.”
Your heart misses a beat.
“Connor Roy was on trial for real property fraud, and you proved him innocent,” he continues. You school your face into neutrality. You get a sick feeling in your stomach that won’t stop growing and gnawing at you. It threatens to eat you inside out. “I hate to burst your bubble, but he was guilty. Fucking stupid, it was.”
You blink. “I don’t mean any disrespect, but-”
Logan’s eyes never leave yours. “But nothing. The deed you found in Connor’s name? Forged. And the people who forged it were paid more than enough to never think of speaking about it in court. You couldn’t have known it was fake, so you took it to trial and won. I practically bankrolled that raise of yours.” You can feel yourself begin to itch. “Initially, there was never any need to tell you. If I had things my way, I’d have let you live your life doing whatever the fuck you wanted. But my son had other plans.” As if he didn’t just reveal that your first case was a joke, he offers you some wine. You quickly decline. You feel like you’re going to puke all over him.
“Kendall. You know Kendall.” His voice drips with venom. “Would’ve given everything to him, but he obviously has different ideas for the company. I can’t let him take it now. He’ll fuck up everything I’ve worked for and put into place at Waystar. And I’m not giving the company to the idiot who accidentally committed fraud to the point of felony, or the one who’s running around the world with her dumb fucking political bullshit. That leaves me with one son. So the company has to go to him.”
Logan tops off his glass of wine. “But, by God’s grace, this leftover son is the fucking stupidest of them all.”
You have no idea how this has anything to do with you.
“Let me be clear, Miss Y/L/N. I respect you. You’re a fantastic attorney. I’d have you on retainer- I will, once my current contract with that Frederica jackass runs out. But you must forgive me for all of this. I have to do what needs to be done.”
He inhales, then sighs. “For you to take control without me losing public face, I want you and my son to come to an agreement in a partnership.”
You have to give him the dumbest fucking look for him to respond with, “Marry him. I need you to marry him.”
“I’m sorry?” You can barely keep your composure. You think you’re dreaming, or someone spiked your water, or you’re dead, or anything but this.
“I can’t have him in control. I can pretend like he is, sure, but I need someone with a brain at the helm.”
“I… my degree is in criminal law. I have no idea how the corporate, let alone financial world runs.” It’s all you can think of to say.
He waves you off. “You’ll learn.”
You don’t know what to say. You probably look like a fish, mouth hung open as you gape at him. “Surely someone else is better suited to this than me. I won’t. I can’t.”
“This is why I had to apologize,” he mutters. “Do as I say, and our secret is kept. Walk away, the tabloids will learn of a little lady who buried and forged evidence to win her first court case.”
“You can’t be serious. I thought it was real!”
“The public doesn’t know that. Regardless, I’ve done worse. I’ve ruined stronger, more powerful people with much less.”
You press your lips into a thin line. “I suppose you’ve left me with no choice,” you grit out.
Logan smiles and claps his hands together. “Welcome to the family.” Your appetizer finally comes and is set in front of you. You don’t feel that hungry anymore. “What are you waiting for? Eat!”
He takes a bit of calamari from you. “I think it goes without saying,” he says, “that if you say anything about this conversation we’ve had, you’ll end up prosecuted and in jail for fraud.”
☾𖤓
You feel like you could punch a hole into the wall. You can’t believe it. It’s pure dumb fucking luck that you got caught in this.
Logan Roy didn’t choose you for your legal prowess, or any of your skill or ability like you’d stupidly believed. He chose you because he has control over you, and he knows it.
A few days pass, and you begrudgingly drag yourself out of your rotting place in bed. Cursing yourself the entire time, you change into something nice. Logan told you he was throwing a party in your name, to introduce you to the family- and the inner circle, you knew.
If anything, you think to yourself, you look fucking good.
You’re not prepared for the onslaught of paparazzi that bombards you the moment you step out of the house.
That bastard must’ve told the press about your engagement.
There’s nothing you can do but get into the black sedan waiting for you at the bottom of your driveway. You’re probably going to have to move, now.
You sit in the backseat, simmering the entire drive. You have to prepare yourself for the hell that’ll be stiff arming paparazzi to get to the party.
When you pull up, you take a deep breath, and step out the car. The man sitting in the passenger seat got out before you and walks out in front of you, another flanking you as you push through the chaos.
The flashes are almost blinding, but you keep your eyes open. Every picture taken tonight is going to be circulated tenfold by not even tomorrow morning. You hope you have resting bitch face in all of them.
Your miniature guard manages to get you inside with no issues. You’re late on purpose, and it seems like the room goes quiet when you enter.
The crowd stares back at you as you survey them. As much as your rage is telling you to make a scene, you won’t. Time and place, you tell yourself.
Immediately, you can tell Connor recognizes you. He tries to avoid your gaze, but your rage bubbles up and out of you. “Mind if I steal him for chat?” you ask the girl standing with him, voice painfully faux-sweet. You feel like you’re on Love Island, in some sick, twisted way.
The girl gives Connor an awkward pat on the arm before leaving him be. You can feel peoples’ eyes burning into the back of your head.
“You told me,” you begin, voice dangerously low, “that you didn’t do it.”
He looks everywhere but at you. “I was just doing what I had to.”
“Was fucking me over what you had to do? Because I feel like that’s all you did,” you hiss.
“Do you really think someone like me is going to ever go to jail?” Connor scoffs. “It could damage my reputation.”
“It could damage my reputation,” you mock. “Are you fucking stupid? Fucking God.”
You turn to leave, but immediately pivot back. “You’re a Roy. You would’ve been bailed out immediately. You wouldn’t have even gone to jail for an hour.”
You’re fuming. You’re barely holding it together.
Then, you catch the eyes of a man not that much taller than you, dressed in all crisp black. He’s handsome, you think, a light stubble dotting his jaw and soft eyes that wrinkle gently when he smiles.
He excuses himself from the conversation he’s having to come to you and Connor.
“Connor. You’ve met my lovely bride-to-be?”
You’re back to fuming, any thoughts of his beauty gone.
He sticks his hand out to you. “Roman Roy. Nice to meet you, I’m your fiancé.” His voice is painfully bitter.
“You think I want this any more than you do?” you ask under your breath, your handshake way too firm. His grip on your hand is equally as tight.
Connor snorts. “At least act like you like each other.”
“You’re the reason any of this happened. Keep yourself out of it,” you snap.
Roman sighs and turns away from Connor. “Can we go for a walk? We should probably have a word.” To your dismay, you agree.
As soon as you’re out of the main atrium and by yourselves in a grand hallway, you speak freely. “Listen, this is nothing personal,” you begin, “but I’m looking for a way out of this.”
Roman looks over at you as you walk, both of you going at a snail’s pace. “I don’t stink, do I?” He sticks his hands in his pockets. “For what it’s worth, I’m sorry this happened to you. I know he’s blackmailing you.”
You sigh. “I should’ve known something was wrong with the case when I never saw my fucking client in person.”
“Well, I want this over as quickly as you do. My father doesn’t want me anywhere near the company, and I’d like to change that.” You both stop walking to face each other. Maybe you two can be friends, despite everything.
“Let me make something clear, though.” Roman takes a step towards you, leaning forward to whisper in your ear. “I’m only in this for me. Not you.”
Whatever positive thoughts you’d had were chased away. You spend the rest of the night fuming under your skin, lying through your teeth, and standing by yourself in the corner.
Siobhan Roy is the first to approach you.
“I admire you, you know.”
“Your father said that too, and look where I am now.”
She presses a flute of champagne into your hand. “I’m not my father.” You share a tense look. “Listen. I think we can do something good together,” she says lowly. “You want to disentangle yourself from this situation, and I want my father out of the picture when it comes to Waystar. Some of my clients have used your firm during political scandal. They all came away unscathed… I have full trust in your ability.”
“What do you want from me?”
“When the time comes,” Siobhan says, “I want you to help take my father to court. And put him down under. So to speak,” she adds. “And I’ll help make sure that if my father ever says anything about you, nobody believes it.”
After Siobhan, it’s Kendall.
“Shiv talked to you.” He’s worse at keeping conversation than she is. “I would also be involved in this. I’d take my dad’s place as CEO, Roman becomes COO.”
“I take him to court, I’m told.”
“Yeah. Yeah, you do, and you win,” he says carefully. “And then you get so much money you can run away to some foreign country and forget any of this happened.”
You regard him carefully. “How can I trust you? Or Siobhan? Or anyone in this fucking place?”
Kendall pauses, and takes a moment to think. “You can’t,” is all he says before leaving you standing on your own once again.
Finally, Roman makes his way back to you. You bristle as you watch him approach. “I know you don’t really like me right now, but I want to go home and I can’t leave without you on my arm. So, shall we?”
You roll your eyes, but take his elbow anyway.

Hey idk if you'd be interested but free! Heist AU
Rin - the mastermind
Rin inherited this business from his late father who was secretly running this organization. He is a driven and charismatic leader who only has eyes looking forward to achieve the next goal. He is an intelligent planner who makes sure his heists are perfect and foolproof, and that he is equipped with the best items and personnel for the job. He will not hesitate to use other people to achieve his goals, and views everyone as a stepping stone for success (unless he takes a really strong liking to you and deems you indispensable). He can be very persuasive with his words, with very provoking offers that you can't help but bite and get baited. But he also be very scary and intimidating, and he's very skilled in a lot of things related to his chosen career. He's a strong hand-to-hand fighter, as well as with quite a few weapons, like a handgun and a knife. He leads the operations and he rarely backs down from a fight.
Haru - the fraud
He can copy any item that is presented before him. Penstroke or brushstroke, he can forge or falsify anything on paper created by the human hand. He can recreate any material, and replicate it 100 times more. He has made a living creating and selling fake copies of expensive items, and their authenticity (or rather, the lack of) is rarely discovered. He takes pride in his craft, which he uses to support his best friend and long-time boyfriend's college education and home expenses.
Makoto - the conman
Haru's boyfriend. He can charm people into agreeing with what he says and making them do what he wants to. He knows how to read people like open books, and therefore knows everything that will make people tick and click. He puts up a facade of kindness that creates a false security, making people fall for his words even deeper. They think everything he says is for their own benefit.
He actually has been working with Haru for a long time now, with him selling the counterfeits Haru manufactures. This is how they met Rin, when they sold him something fake and it took Rin a long time to discover that he was astonished.
Rei - the hacker
A computer genius with too much time on his hands, Rei delved deep into computer technology. There is no digital system he can't hijack. His application to a university got rejected after an academic rival sabotaged his chances, and while taking a gap year, fell too deep into tinkering computer programs, codes, wires, and other gadgets. He exposed corruption of several huge academic bodies under anonymous accounts and became a target under hiding. Rin was able to track him and took him under his wing for his service in exchange for protection.
Nagisa - the moneymaker
He's the guy who helps Rin earn his funds, albeit by using unconventional means. He's the greatest thief in the team, being able to steal anything; from pickpocketing a stranger's wallet to infiltrating a heavily-guarded jewel and running away with it. He's also an amazing gambler and bluffer and is able to earn money by betting against people he meets. He ran away from home and made a living on the streets by himself and that's how Rin found him.
Gou - the secretary
Rin's sister whos only in it as a promise to her father to keep an eye on Rin and make sure he stays away from harm. She handles all the internal affairs and logistics of the team, such as record keeping and accounting. She rarely goes out for a mission, unless the team needs a femme fatale to bait a client for her to use her seduction skills on. She can take care of herself, with some fighting moves under her belt and equipped with the skill of using everyday objects as weapons. Yes, she has crippled a man for life with nothing but a clutch purse and her heels.
Kisumi - the backer
This guy has connections everywhere. He knows everyone from everything and therefore is always able to pull several strings whenever Rin is in a pinch. Need a man in Guatemala? He got you covered. Need a guy with a ship? He knows one. Need 25 billion yen? Oddly enough, someone owes him that exact amount. Do not make an enemy out of him. Be his friend! Just like what Rin did with him!
Asahi - the grease monkey
He's a dropout from automotive school after his sister's shop went bankrupt and he can no longer pay for his tuition. Equipped with only a rundown mechanic shop and a dream, he studied automotive all on his own and was discovered by Kisumi when he repaired his car that no one should be able to when it broke down in the middle of nowhere (the nowhere being Asahi's rural town where he is the only mechanic). There is no machine he can't disassemble and reassemble at the same breath. He can fix, modify, customize, and redesign any vehicle with his mechanic skills that the team thinks he could create the next ultimate war weapon if left unchecked.
Hiyori - the chameleon
He can transform into anyone at the blink of an eye. Being a master of deception, he is able to imitate a person's body language, movement, personality, speech pattern, etc. which allows him to turn into a completely different person. With each transformation, he is able to completely erase traces of his former self. Combined with skill in disguise and makeup application, he is the best spy the team could offer. No one knows if they have seen his true face or personality, nor does anyone know of Hiyori's lonely past and desire to be wanted and accepted. Is that his real face? His real self? His real name? Who knows...
Ikuya - the stalker
He can tail a person without letting his presence be detected whatsoever. His attachment issues with his younger, who is a free spirit roaming around the world and tried his best to shake him off of him led him to develop his stalking tendencies. Anywhere his brother goes, he was able to follow. He can bypass any security, any lock system, and no one would be able to detect. He can get in anywhere, even places people wouldn't be able to get into. Lock him, bind him, imprison him, and he will escape. He can follow anyone to the depths of the earth, to the most hidden corner of the planet. He can find anything you need, person or item. When he locks onto a target, he is unstoppable, and no one knows how he is able to achieve these feats. The only way he found out about Rin's team and got recruited was because he followed Natsuya and broke into the hideout. Rin was impressed and recruited him along with his brother.
Sousuke - the wheelman
Rins best friend and very first member of the team. He was the original partner in crime and his job was to take Rin wherever he needed to be. He can drive any vehicle from practice because of his background. He comes from a rich family and has experience driving several vehicles, using his father's money to enjoy the luxury. He was an up and coming car racer but an accident hindered his chances of becoming a pro, so he ran away from his high status lifestyle to join Rin in his adventures (and to try pursue romance with him but really, he hasn't gotten far with his attempts with him yet).
Can he pilot a plane? Yes. Can he man a ship? Yes. Can he drive a van with one arm while shooting his pursuers with the other? Yes. Can he go around the city without getting lost all by himself? No. His only weakness? His lack of sense of direction.
Natsuya - the navigator
He knows everything about everywhere because of his experiences travelling to a lot of different places. He knows every nook and cranny of every town, village or city and knows how to get around either through the fastest, safest, or easiest way. He knows a lot of things about different buildings as well. He knows the layout of his target's places inside and out. He's an experienced thief like Nagisa, and he usually comes with Rin during infiltration and most of the time works as Sousuke's navigator when he's on the wheel. He's also an excellent shotgun rider, with an excellent aim when shooting from his seat.
Nao - the intel
The only person better than Makoto at reading people. He has a weird ability to know a person's nature and tendency just from a single look, and from there formulate a strategy on how to deal with them. He always submits his reports with extensive personal profiles of their targets and no one knows how he manages to get his hands on these data. Only joined the team after quitting his job of being a corporate worker to keep an eye on Natsuya.
Nitori - the contingency
One of Rin's most trusted subordinates. Rin may be the one planning everything, but not everything goes according to plan. And that's where he comes in. He has backup plans for everything, in case anything that can go wrong, goes wrong. Most of the time his anxiety induced overthinking is useless when things go smooth, but it has definitely saved Rin's ass several times when he got cornered into a pinch. Years of being a victim of bullying made him good in "thinking of what it do in case something goes wrong", but he doesn't like to talk about that. Not when Rin had already saved him from that nightmare of a past.
Momo - the inside job
He works at a media company in charge of delivering headline news. Indebted to Rin for freeing his brother out of prison, his role is to receive intel from a more stable source, and whatever data he receives from the journalists he delivers to the team. He is also responsible for covering up their heists and making sure that none of their activities make it to the public.
Do not let the childish demeanor fool you, he is the brother of a convict and is trained in combat as well. Journalists have many enemies, and he will not hesitate to pull out and shoot when he deems you as a threat.
Sei - the combat master
Rin's most trusted soldier. An ex-military who got suspended for "unknown reasons", he is an expert in several martial arts styles from around the world, and is very skilled in fighting either barehanded or with weapons. He can fight people way above his weight class. He is trained in using all sorts of weapons, from knives in close-range combat to snipe shooting. Rin recruited him after helping him escape from prison because he greatly needed his talents, and he refuses to let him go to waste and just rot locked up in confinement.
Loooove a crime ring or heist AU 😈 a whole bunch of potential for different power dynamics and grey moralities and such. There’s a lot of fun character bits I’d love to hear more about as well 👀
- How much did Rin know about the company/ring/etc before he inherited it? How much did Gou know? I’m curious since it feels like some characters could’ve known Rin before he became a boss figure (Sousuke and Kisumi being the kids of family friends or allies, with their own varying degrees of awareness/involvement in the underground scheming). I’d be curious to see how the few people who are able to get close to Rin (more than an employer) see him take on the mantle, see him will himself into the mastermind by force — the talent is anything but natural, anything but easy, and there’s a reason he tends to put himself on the front lines in their missions despite being the figurehead they all probably can’t afford to lose (pride, obligation, control). I can see conflicts arising from him not stowing himself away with the other roles behind-the-scenes (Gou, Rei, etc) and focusing on management stuff (convening with the info/intel/PR roles to maintain face as a chairman or something). I can see that being a possible beef and debate between Rin and Haru, how Haru doesn’t understand why he would insist on being a part of the action so directly all the time (how he can manage to have any semblance of life/normalcy with his face/identity surely being tied to chaos in the underground scene at least), and Rin hitting Haru in a sore spot by saying something about “for a guy that cares about getting to have security, you sure don’t seem to mind that your boy puts his own hide on the line a lot. Why do you think Makoto does it?” (Something something, Haru trying to insist more than once over the years that Makoto doesn’t need to be involved in the con, versus Makoto’s stubborn “you can’t get rid of me that easy” smooth-talking. Haru hoping they can keep getting away with everything long enough for Makoto to get his degree and an above-board gig, while being acutely aware that each mission involves Makoto taking on more and more conning responsibilities and having less moments to breathe as his most earnest self. The shared struggle of them both making a living off of emulating other things [it’s never his own expression/art, it’s never Makoto’s own kindness/heart] and how that wears them down over time.)
- the Kirishimas of it all are interesting, especially with how Ikuya’s abilities make it sound like he’s versatile enough to be a powerhouse in his own right. Nat functions well with being the navigator for Ssk, and Ikuya and Nao following him into Rin’s ring makes sense, but I almost wonder… do you think Ikuya ever question’s being led by Rin? How his own skillset is versatile enough to compare to Rin’s hands-on leadership (both being honed by their own dedications and desperations to Do What They Have To), and that he might like, idk, impress his older brother and make him “proud” by trying to branch off with his own gang/group? As Hiyori gets attached to Ikuya (originally being an undercover genius and gradually morphing into Ikuya’s right hand man), and Ikuya develops enough connections over time within the company (naturally having pre-existing Nat/Nao connections, getting info from Kisumi, running into Asahi for a few things, etc), I’d be curious to see if they’d like, have a threat of a grand split, or he branches off technically within Rin’s company, but with his own kingpin/leadership type position. IDK, PLOT!!
- One thing I keep wondering is how many people are like, primarily goons under Rin’s thumb versus separate contacts that are seen on equal footing. Momo makes me wonder how much he really gets to know about any of the missions before they happen, rather than being a mostly-removed guy in reporting that Nitori or one of the sweet-talkers convenes with from time-to-time to ensure they get cover stories done. How much does Asahi get involved; does he know much more beyond Kisumi and Rin being wealthy repeat customers who come to him with odd requests he doesn’t ask questions about? So many paths. They can all be called in when needed for the right mission or heist, but how many are still connected to Rin in the in-between? How many have debts or are on payroll, and how many could refuse if the price wasn’t right? Extra little dynamic stuff that could make things ~juicy~.
- (no coherent last notes. Just thinkin about ssk and all the ways he could have lasting disabilities from the incident/injury that took him out of the racing circuit. The possibility of Rin knowing him as a rich boy family friend before the incident and having some sense of closeness that makes him wonder sometimes how selfish it was to invite him in to a more underhanded world full-time. Ssk paralleling Makoto in how he goes from “I’m here because you’re here” with one notable skill/role that develops over time to being more risky and involved. Rin being so used to the noise and chaos at this point that it takes a moment of seeing Sousuke on a Bad Pain Day between missions to remember how human they all are, or have that “why didn’t you tell me you were worn down” talk that makes him realize how far ssk is willing to go simply because Rin’s the one asking. Classic sourins)

this is a sensitive topic and it is perfectly okay if you don't want to write it but if you don't do you mind still answering it saying you aren't doing so
y/n is trying to break up with girlfriend bc she's in a physical abusive relationship but she keeps threatening her into staying with her then one day y/n packs overnight bag to go stay at the tower and her gf follows her there starts a one sided argument if you get what i mean. the team or tony wanda and nat walk in and ask if everything is alright. y/n says yes but they see the look on her gf eyes and y/n bag and one of them takes y/n inside and try to get her to open up about what's happening bc they see her tiredness and bruises.
I don't mind this type of writing :)
You have been in a toxic relationship with your girlfriend for two years. Whenever you thought of leaving her you always felt scared. Your girlfriend is crazy and you were afraid what she is capable of. The last time you tried to call the cops on her she somehow flipped the case onto you and made you seem like a liar and a fraud. But you've had enough of her. You suffered for far too long and you can't keep going anymore.
You were best friends with Tony. You had worked with him before on projects that helped him reach were he is right now so he owes you a lot and he also enjoys hanging out with you. Since him and the other avengers are your only friends, you decided to go to the tower to seek protection.
You tried to hide the fact that you were leaving from your girlfriend by packing only the necessary things and hide the bag from her. But somehow, she knew. She didn't tell you, but she hinted it. And you were terrified. So you took the most rational thing that came up to your mind, you took your bag, your car keys, and your phone and you headed straight to your car.
You turned on the car and quickly moved to the road and you looked on the mirror and saw that she was getting into her own car. shit.
You had reached past the speed limit to reach the tower faster, completely ignoring the cops, and trying to look for shortcuts to reach there faster. You noticed that she was right behind you by the time you reached the tower. You quickly pulled out your phone and called Tony.
"Hey, champ! how you doing?" Tony said. "Hey Tony, listen, I'm parked in front of the tower, please meet me outside quickly," You said almost inaudible. "O-Okay, are you alright?" Tony asked concerned. "Yeah, just meet me here quickly,". With that you quickly turned off your phone and walked inside the tower.
When you walked your way inside the tower with your bags, you saw Tony walking to you with a confused look. "What is going on? you seemed in some sort of trouble," He asked. You couldn't say anything, you were so focused on seeking protection from your girlfriend. When you didn't respond, Tony got even more concerned. He looked past you to see what is going on and why do you seem so scared. That's when he saw your girlfriend.
"What's going on?" He asked your girlfriend. "My girlfriend is having an episode, don't worry about her I'll take her away from you sir," She said. Now it clicked to you that Tony has never met your girlfriend. "She's lying Tony! She is the crazy one!! She's toxic!" With you saying that Tony knew immediately what was happening.
"Hey Y/N! I heard you were coming-" You looked at your left and saw that Wanda came in. "Who is that?" She said, pointing at your girlfriend. "Wanda take Y/N with you, I've got to take care of something," Tony said and handed you to Wanda. Even though she was confused, she took you from your arm and pulled you with her to the elevator.
When you and Wanda reached the floor everyone was, you saw that Natasha was sitting at the living room. "Hey Y/N, I didn't know you would pay us a visit today," She said standing up to greet you, but she saw that you were crying. "Hey, what happened?" She said walking closer to you to put her hand on your shoulder. You sighed and explained your situation to them, and by the time you were done, Tony walked out the elevator.
"Y/N, you'll be staying with us for now," He said walking up to you. "What about my girlfriend?" You asked. "Your ex-girlfriend was taken care of, don't worry about her," Tony emphasized. You smiled softly at him and he smiled back,"
"Welcome to the tower kid"

In an Era of Fakes, How to Know When Someone Online Is Real
https://www.wsj.com/tech/personal-tech/in-an-era-of-fakes-how-to-know-when-someone-online-is-real-66918976
You’re on Facebook, LinkedIn or X and get a message. Maybe it’s from a stranger in your industry, maybe someone from your hometown claiming to know you from way back when. The person wants to reconnect or get your advice.
This could all be wonderful. Or it could be the start of a scam.
Unfortunately, security experts say, the latter is more likely, because personalized schemes to dupe internet users are on the rise. Trouble is, it is harder than ever to know whether that person showing up in your messages is real or not.
A check mark next to someone’s name on social media used to mean their identity had been verified. That’s now not the case on all sites. Artificial intelligence can help bad actors replicate the voices and appearances of strangers. Online transactions—such as selling furniture on Facebook Marketplace—are magnets for fraud, banks and security experts warn. And schemers are cozying up to people online and pretending to kindle romance to gain access to their money, a form of fraud called “pig butchering.”
The single best step to determine someone’s identity online and protect yourself is to slow down. Don’t rush to respond to an intriguing message. Instead do some vetting before taking things further. Tech companies are beginning to help, too, with Google, LinkedIn and Bumble introducing features to detect suspicious messages and users.
The stakes couldn’t be higher. U.S. consumers lost $1.1 billion in romance scams last year, according to the Federal Trade Commission, while business scams cost people $752 million.
Changing rules
The growing sophistication of scams means guidelines for operating online are changing. Some old rules still apply: Cross-check people and their credentials on legitimate sites such as their employer’s home page. Don’t click on suspicious links or continue the conversation on a different platform.

Magnolia in May ~ Chapter Three
Chapter Summary: Jessie finally arrives at Arrow House, but she worries about whether or not she will make a good first impression on the Shelby children.
Chapter Warnings: None
Word Count: 4106
Chapter Three
The drive was peaceful, and the sun had come out again. It was as though Mother Nature was having a hard time deciding what she wanted today to be like. I sat down in the car, keeping my hands in my lap to keep them from shaking as we drove down the winding country roads, passing the river where me and a few other kids would toss sticks in and race them, seeing whose would come out the other side of the bridge first, the apple trees we used to climb, and the lake we spent hot summer evenings swimming in.
One question, however, pressed on my mind, one that I’d been meaning to ask him earlier, but it completely went over my head and I ended up forgetting because of all the excitement. I cleared my throat softly. “So, Mister Shelby, what is it you do?”
“I rarely answer questions, is what I do,” he answered, almost off-handedly. I turned back to the window and nodded, fiddling with the top button on my blouse to keep my hands from fidgeting.
“Forgive me, it’s just my uncle has mentioned you so frequently, it feels as though I already know you, but he’s failed to mention your occupation.”
“Oh, has he mentioned me?” Thomas asked with a sly grin, turning his attention to me with a little laugh, and he looked almost like he was suppressing some kind of a cheeky remark as he spoke. A smug smirk tugged at the corners of his lips. “I do bad things. But you already know that, don’t you, sweetheart? So, how much did he tell you about me, eh?”
He leaned closer, close enough that our faces were just a few inches apart, and the smell of the cologne he was wearing was overpowering. His gaze intensified as he awaited my response, and I felt slightly intimidated.
“Your criminal enterprise, for instance. I overheard him speaking about it with my aunt. Protection rackets, fraud, land grabs, smuggling, hijacking, robbery, and illegal bookmaking,” Clicking my tongue, I met his eyes again. “Seems you have quite the reputation.”
“Do you believe the rumours and stories? Do you think I’m a good man? A bad man? A little bit of both?” he asked.
“Honestly, I haven’t decided yet,” I answered. “But he also mentioned that you are a family man and will do anything to protect them and keep them safe. How did you two meet anyhow?”
Hands gripping the wheel, he leaned back against his seat, eased the car into a sharp right turn and then proceeded to drive straight down the lane.
For a second, the way he was staring ahead it looked to me like his mind was somewhere else. I was about to brush it off and tell him that he didn’t need to answer, when he said, “That’s rather simple. We fought together in France.”
He paused for a moment, letting the statement hang in the air for a few moments. My mind drifted to those dreadful first nights home, when Albert first came home. He would wake up shouting and sweating in the middle of the night and Eliza would do her best to comfort him. I would be standing in the hall, my heart aching, wondering if he would ever get better. On top of that, he was mourning the death of his eldest son.
Returning home from the battlefield, he was not the same man he was when he left. For months, it was as though he’d built a wall around his heart, to protect it from any more damage. I sensed that same pain in Thomas. No doubt he was just a young boy when he volunteered to join the army, but the fact that he selflessly devoted himself to protecting this country and its people, filled me with such admiration and affection for his bravery.
Physical affection came quite easily to me and it was how I showed people that I cared. I placed my hand on top of his free one, which rested on his lap and his eyes met mine. Perhaps I had been too bold and crossed a few boundaries with my new employer, but while I expected him to pull away, his thumb rubbed across my knuckles in an appreciative way.
“You were good friends,” I concluded, looking down at our hands.
“Yes, he saved my life,” he answered, his voice almost in a whisper, but with a fond smile still painted on his face. Then he gave my hand a gentle squeeze and then placed it back on the wheel. “Cheer up, love, we’re almost there.”
Soon enough, we reached Arrow House, a beautiful mansion. There was a small stone fountain in the centre of it and the pink flowers were all in bloom and around us, an avenue of beautiful pleached lime trees.
The sight of the mansion took my breath away; it was grander and more impressive than I ever could have imagined. It was the kind of place that you only see in fairy tales, a mansion straight out of a storybook. I could only stare up at it in awe, the beauty and magnificence of it all overwhelming. But even in my awe, I couldn’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of dread and foreboding as I looked up at the imposing structure. I had the feeling that behind this beautiful façade, there was something darker and more sinister lurking.
I jumped at the unexpected touch, turning to see Thomas staring at me with an expression of concern. “Are you all right?”
“Just a little nervous, is all,” I replied with a soft laugh.
“There’s nothing to be nervous about, I promise, everything will be fine once we get you settled in,” he assured me as he placed a gentle hand on my knee and gave me a comforting smile that made all of my worries wash away, “and trust me, the children are going to love you.”
I took a deep breath and nodded. I felt myself relax into the gesture, his warm and comforting touch making my nerves ease and my worry wash away as we drove up the long, winding driveway towards the imposing structure up ahead.
Underneath a tall archway near the front door, an older lady stood wearing a black maid’s dress with a white collar. Her chestnut brown hair was pinned up in the traditional women’s style and a few curls brushed against her cheeks.
She greeted us with a friendly ‘hello’ as we got out of the car and I stood on the pavement for a minute or two, admiring the splendour of the estate. “This must be our new governess,” she said.
“Jessie, this is Frances, our housekeeper,” Thomas answered, by way of introduction as he went to the trunk of the van and took out my luggage. I was a bit taken aback by the action. Normally, I did things on my own, pulled my own weight, so to speak, so having other people do things for me was going to take some getting used to.
“Nice to meet you,” she smiled.
“And you as well,” I smiled back.
Already, I knew we were going to get along just fine.
That’s when I noticed two children, a young boy and a girl, standing next to Frances, holding her hands. The girl, who wore a pretty black dress and a matching ribbon in her dark hair, broke free from the lady’s hold and came running over to us.
“Daddy!” she cried, a big smile on her face. Thomas grinned and ran over to her, lifting her up and twirling her in the air, making her shriek with laughter. “We missed you.”
“I missed you, too, sweetheart.” He held her on his hip. “Were you a good girl while I was gone?”
She nodded and then her beautiful brown eyes turned to me.
“Daddy, who’s that?” she asked.
“This is Jessie. Wanna say ‘hello’ to her?”
“Hello,” she said, waving her hand in my direction.
“Hello, and what’s your name?”
“Ruby,” she said.
“Such a pretty name. It’s nice to meet you, Miss Ruby.”
She giggled. Just then, the boy came down next. He stood at almost four feet tall. His light brown hair was combed and almost the same style as his father. His smile showed off the dimples in his cheeks, and there was a twinkle in his light blue eyes. “And who is this strapping young lad?”
“Charlie,” he replied.
“Charlie,” I repeated, kneeling down so he could meet my eyes, and extending my hand in greeting, “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Sir.”
Being called ‘sir’ lightened the boy’s mood, made him feel more like a man. I always addressed my charges by their titles since they were, in all technicality, my superiors. It made them happy, made them feel more grown-up. He grinned again. Thomas set Ruby down on the ground again and then gave both his children a stern but loving look.
“This is Jessie, your new governess, and your new best friend, so try to play nice together, alright? Make her feel welcome?”
The children nodded and straightened up, both saluting Thomas, which made a small smile tug the corner of my lip.
“Jessie, this little man and lady here will be your charges, so I expect you to keep them safe and happy, understood?” His tone was firm and authoritative, but there was an underlying warmth that took the edge off of his sternness, a kindness that made it easy to respect him.
“Understood, sir,” I replied with a nod, saluting as well.
“Can we show Jessie around the house?” asked Ruby. She and Charlie took my hands and tugged them, almost impatiently.
“Alright,” Thomas chuckled. “Go on inside.”
“Come on!” said Ruby and I looked over my shoulder. I could see he was struggling to keep from laughing as the children pulled me up the driveway and led me into the mansion, taking in all of the opulent and luxurious surroundings.
“Let me take your coat,” said Charlie.
“Why, thank you. Such a gentleman.” Unbuttoning the coat, I placed it in his eager hands and he stood on his tiptoes, putting it up on the hook. Then he got down and took off my boots. He didn’t want to get the floors dirty with my boots, he said. “Now then, where shall we explore first?”
“Downstairs!” said Charlie.
“Upstairs!” said Ruby, at the same time.
“Hm, well, I don’t think I can go both upstairs and downstairs at the same time. My arms aren’t wide enough to be pulled in both directions,” I said, stretching them out wide and they giggled. “How do you think we should solve this?”
“Flip a coin?” Charlie reached into his pocket and pulled out a coin and handed it to me. I balanced it on my thumb and forefinger, I flipped it, barely catching it in the air before it fell on the floor.
“Heads or tails?” I asked, covering it with my opposite hand.
“Tails,” said Charlie.
“Heads!” said Ruby.
I uncovered it and Charlie grinned widely, but then noticed Ruby pouting a little, a bit put out by her loss. “Don’t worry, you can pick which room we go in first?”
She nodded and smiled again, looking up at me. “Wanna see the music room first?”
“Music room!?” I asked, with genuine enthusiasm in my voice.
“Yeah, Charlie has violin lessons and I have piano lessons.”
“Come on, we’ll show you!”
The elaborate ceilings and oak panelling and intricate stained glass made me feel as though I’d been sucked into a fairytale, every inch of it dripping with grandeur and elegance.
It was hard to believe that such a place could exist, but here I was walking through its lavish halls and experiencing it firsthand. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe and wonder as I looked around at everything, drinking in the splendour.
In the music room was a beautiful baby grand piano. It sat near the window, overlooking the spectacular gardens. I stepped over to it and pressed my fingers along the ebony and ivory keys. There was also some sheet music up against a little stand. There was also a stool where the musician could sit and play, and a few more chairs stood here and there, providing comfortable seating for anyone who wanted to come in and listen.
“Can you play?” asked Ruby, coming to stand next to me.
“Would you like me to play something?” I looked at her. Charlie came and stood on the other side. I took the book, flipping through the pages of sheet music until I found one he thought sounded good.
Sheet music was tricky for me, but I knew the song well enough and knew where each note was located on the piano.
I took a breath and played the notes of the song softly.
Charlie and Ruby glanced at each other, their expressions solemn.
“Daddy loves that song,” he said once I’d finished playing.
“Does he?” I asked. I never pinned Thomas as the ‘soft music’ type.
“He says it reminds him of Mama.”
There was a sadness in Charlie’s eyes that spoke of a deep pain, a pain that was impossible to describe in words. I didn’t know the late Mrs. Shelby, not personally, anyway, but my uncle, who had apparently met her and several other members of her extended family, spoke highly of her and her kind nature, as well as her dedication to protecting orphaned children in the city. It was clear to me that her loss had impacted the family greatly, and took a great toll on Thomas, as well as her son.
Come to think of it, I doubt he could have been more than two years old, maybe three, when she died. Still, I wondered how much he remembered her. He was such a sweet, sensitive boy and it was heartbreaking to see that pain in his eyes. I stood up from the piano, knelt down in front of him, and reached out to put a gentle hand on his cheek to dry his tears, but he wrapped his arms around me, laying his head down on my shoulder. I held him close, running my hand through his hair.
Ruby wasn’t born whilst she was alive, so she’d never really known, or missed her. But being the child of divorced parents was probably still hard on her, having to choose between staying with her mother, or her father, so she had some inkling of what it was like to miss someone she loved. Seeing her brother upset made her look sad as well.
“Brother, you’re crying,” she observed.
“I miss Mama,” he said in a small, choked voice, and she came up behind me and held his hand. I felt this overpowering urge to protect these kids, to shield them from all of the dangers in this world. It was obvious that the two of them needed a lot of care and a lot of attention and I felt a great responsibility to be able to do that for them.
“Shh, I know. I know it hurts sweet boy,” I said, rubbing his back. His shoulders shook as his cries turned into sobs. I took a shaky breath and continued holding onto him, as long as he needed me to. “I lost my mama when I was a little girl, too.”
“Really?” asked Ruby and I looked over at her, nodding softly while Charlie wiped his eyes with the back of his hands. “Do you miss her?”
“Everyday,” I nodded. “And I miss my papa, too.”
“Our daddy gets really sick sometimes,” she said, her eyes staring down at the floor and her chest starts to heave up and down. “Frances has to take care of him and he has to stay in bed. I think it’s because he misses Mama Grace, too. Will we lose him, too?”
Pursing my lips together, I tried to keep my own tears back. This life was all they’d ever known, but it was only now that they were old enough to grasp what was going on and to understand that there were bad people in this world who wanted to hurt them. Heaven forbid anything ever did.
“No, sweetheart, your daddy just needs time, that’s all.” I said, wrapping one of my arms around her and hugging her tightly, as though my arms were a protective shield. I then turned to them both. “And you know what?”
“What?” asked Charlie.
“Whenever you miss someone,” I paused, placing my hands over their hearts, and gave them a comforting smile, “they will always be right here. You can talk to them, whatever is on your mind, and they will listen. Because once you love someone, they stay in your heart forever and ever.”
“You’ll always be here, too, right, Jessie?” He sniffled and I dried his eyes again. I was trying really, really hard not to cry, to be strong for their sake, and to offer as much comfort and support as I could.
I wanted him to know that he could always rely on me, that I would always be there for him. For both of them. And I would keep them safe no matter what.
“Of course I will. I’m going to stay here forever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever…”
The kids started to laugh the more I said ‘and ever.’ I smiled, too.
“Listen to me. I’m going to make sure you’re safe and happy.”
“And Daddy, too?” asked Ruby.
“Yes, and Daddy, too. You just focus on being kids and enjoying yourselves. Yeah?” They both nodded and in the back of my mind, I searched for something happier that we could talk about. Finally, I remembered something. “If I’m not mistaken, there are horses outside in the stables. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one up close before.”
“Never?” They both stared at me with wide eyes.
“Never,” I admitted.
“Come on, we’ll show you!” They both took off running and I had to hurry after them in order to be able to keep up.
“Slow down! You’re too fast!” I panted and they laughed, running along down the hallway, nearly avoiding bumping into the other servants and maids, who I offered hasty apologies to.
Within a few minutes, we were outside. The air was fresh and clean and smelled heavily of flowers. The sun was out again. The children stood at the bottom of the steps and waited for me to join them, just before sprinting off again.
Much like my cousins back home, I knew these little ones wouldn’t fail to keep me on my toes. They were like tornadoes of joy and energy and I could only smile along with them.
“The stable is over here!” called Ruby, waving me over. Charlie was facing me, telling me to hurry up. Laughing, I picked up my skirts and followed along willingly, eager to see the horses that they loved so much. As soon as I made it to the tall, wooden doors, he stood up on his tiptoes and gripped the door handles, opening the doors and allowing in a flood of sunlight.
Hay rustled under my boots as we stepped inside. There were four magnificent horses of all sizes and colours. One of them raised its head and looked right at me with its eyes. I stopped in my tracks, speechless and in awe of the sight before me.
I had never seen such magnificent, glorious horses in all my life!
Their beauty and majesty is almost too much to bear.
“Aren’t they beautiful?” Ruby whispered and reached up to stroke the muzzle of the horse I was admiring. I went up behind her and lifted her up so she would have an easier time. “This one’s name is Shimmer. I picked the name out myself.”
“Did you?” I asked, keeping my voice barely above a whisper so as not to spook the beautiful creature, then I slowly reached out a hand to gently stroke her horse’s flank. “Hello, lovely.”
The horse turned its head and looked at me with soft brown eyes, its ears flattening in a friendly, loving way. I glanced over at Charlie and he was in front of a stunning black mare.
“And who is this?” I asked, giving this horse the same amount of attention as I did Shimmer. It was soft and smooth and I could feel the gentle sway of its muscles shifting beneath my touch. It was like holding a living, breathing angel in my hands and I couldn’t help but fall in love at first sight.
“We call him Johnny Boy,” Charlie replied, his eyes sparkling with pride and excitement and with a look of pure wonder and admiration on his face as he admired the horse. He obviously loved this animal a great deal and I suspected that it was more than a little spoiled as well.
“Aren’t you a beauty!” I whispered and the horse pranced proudly upon hearing my praise, clearly loving the attention. Charlie beamed as he watched the horse, and I could see that there was a deep, strong connection between them as well. It made the horse even more beautiful to me, knowing how loved and cherished it was, knowing the care and attention that had gone into raising such a stunning creature.
“That one is Daddy’s horse,” said Ruby, pointing to another black horse in the stall across the way. “He is big and strong and can go really fast. This lady comes over sometimes and trains them all.”
“Really?” I asked, genuinely intrigued.
“She’s one of his friends,” she nodded.
“Oh, is she nice?”
“Yeah, she’s nice.”
“And sometimes she stays the night,” Charlie added.
“We’re not allowed in Daddy’s room when she sleeps over.”
I can see why, I thought to myself, but didn’t say out loud.
“Ooooh, Is she Daddy’s girlfriend?” I said instead in a light-hearted, playful voice and made a kissy face, causing them both to break out into a fit of giggles. I smiled and then set Ruby down on the ground. “Alright. Shall we go inside?”
“Yeah, I wanna show you the ballroom,” she said.
“The ballroom?” I asked.
Before I knew it, we were inside again and they led me down the hall to more tall doors. Their eyes glittered with enthusiasm and excitement. I could tell that they were very proud of their home and had been looking forward to showing it off to me.
“Prepare to be amazed!” he said, spreading his hands and then putting them on the knobs, opening them.
The room was enormous and opulent, with high ceilings and marble floors. The walls were covered in intricate decorative panels and there was a giant chandelier in the centre of the room that bathed the dance floor in a soft glow. I’d never seen anything like it and it gave me the feeling of being inside a fairy tale, a magnificent and magical world that was almost too beautiful to exist. My heart fluttered as I admired the grandeur of the surrounding architecture.
“Daddy has parties in this room sometimes,” said Charlie, “but all they talk about is business. It’s boring, that’s why Ruby and I go upstairs to the nursery and play with our toys instead.”
I laughed a little at that. I replied with a sympathetic smile. I could imagine that listening to a bunch of grown men sit around blabbing about money and investments and interest rates couldn’t be very much fun for someone as energetic and joyful as the kids. I had to admit, the thought of listening to these serious and stuffy business meetings sounded incredibly unappealing; why couldn’t they talk about toys and games and horses instead?
“I’m not one for boring parties, either,” I told Charlie with a warm, sympathetic smile. “Just talking about it makes me….”
I pretended to snore and they giggled again. I opened my eyes.
“Sorry, I think I fell asleep for a minute there. Right, then, if your dad ever throws one of those boring parties, we will just have to make our own fun, eh?”
I took both of their hands and danced with them around the room, spinning and leaping which made their faces light up with joy. Even with all of the grandeur and luxury of the mansion, they were the light in the centre that drew my eye.

How to Turn Your Old Computers into Cash?
Please click the attached link for the extended version of how to sell old computer parts. Here is my summary.
Recycling Old Computer Parts:
Instead of accumulating old computer parts, consider selling them for recycling or reuse.
Selling old computers and PCs helps recycle them in the market and prevents them from becoming junk in your home.
Even if parts can't be reused, they can still be sent to extract metals, ensuring safe disposal.
Factors to Consider Before Selling:
Research the demand and supply of your old PC or laptop to determine its selling price.
Note down all specifications and details to understand the true value of your device.
Be aware of listing fees, packing fees, shipping costs, and any additional charges before selling.
Consideration of Fees and Charges:
Selling on platforms like eBay may incur selling fees, while peer-to-peer platforms like Facebook or Reddit can save costs.
Classified platforms or auction marketplaces offer good returns but involve time-consuming processes and risks dealing with strangers.
Advantages of Trade-In Websites:
Trade-in websites offer fast and safe transactions, providing instant quotes and handling shipping.
They accept a wide range of old processors, protecting sellers from fraud and ensuring a fair price.
Places to Sell Old Computer Parts:
Trade-in Websites: Quick and safe transactions with reputable companies like BuySellRam.com.
eBay: Wide audience but may involve insertion fees and longer waiting times.
Amazon: Safe transactions with verification but consider selling fees.
Facebook Marketplace: Networking opportunity but exercise caution with transactions.
Reddit/r/hardwareswap: Safe community for selling with fair values but requires an active account.
Craigslist: Wide local audience but beware of scammers.
Pinterest: Source of information on selling old devices through blog posts.
Preparatory Steps Before Selling:
List down specifications, take clear photos, back up data, package items securely, and enjoy the return on your old devices.
This article is from BuySellRam.com, where you can exchange all used computer parts. For example, you can sell an SSD to them without any security issues.
If you are a gamer or AI developer and you do not know how to deal with your used GPUs, you may want to check out their other post on the best place to sell GPUs.

Seventeen The8 (Xu Minghao) 2023 - 2024 Reading
This is a 2023 - 2024 reading for Minghao based on what I can pick up from him.
Career
Minghao will likely have a few solo opportunities or subunit opportunities during this period. He may also release something like a mixtape or feature in other people's songs or take part in writing/producing for others. He also has high chances of doing more work in China, probably participating in variety shows or maybe even a stint in acting. He could also be some MC/commentor for a show too or show up in other celebs' concerts.
During this period he'll have many chances to shine and will need to seize them before some others take those chances. This is not a time for him to chill/coast along/relax.
There are also chances of him getting into tough situations like issues with song writing/plagiarism or the person he collabs with has a scandal/negative news etc. These tough situations are out of his control so he and his team will need to do some damage control.
Friendship
Minghao will take this time to break off some toxic friends. He will realize the true nature of some close friends of his. He may also take revenge on them if they hurt or betray him. Minghao will still socialize with others but he will know to keep his distance and protect his heart. He will not trust others so easily after experiencing some betrayals.
Other
Minghao may be a victim of identity theft/fraud during this period. He may accidentally click on some link which leads to him being scammed/his personal information being stolen. He may also potentially lose his phone or some gadget of his, which contains personal information. This would lead him to experience his information being sold or used against him.
He has to be careful when lending money to others. They're unlikely to return the money he lent and possibly ask him for more. He doesn't have much luck these days in terms of investing or gambling or taking big risks with respect to money, so it's best that he just focus on his job as a celebrity and not venture into businesses. He may be tempted to start some business with others or invest in some business, but that will most likely result in big losses.

Best tools for Entrepreneurs and Business Owners
In today's fast-paced business landscape, companies are constantly looking for ways to stay ahead of the curve. One of the most effective ways to do this is by embracing new technologies like artificial intelligence (A.I.). With the power of A.I. at their disposal, businesses no longer have to waste precious time and resources on mundane, repetitive tasks. Instead, they can focus on what truly matters: growth and innovation.
A.I. has the power to automate a wide range of tasks, from scheduling appointments to tracking inventory. This allows companies to save time and money, while also increasing efficiency and productivity. For example, instead of having employees manually sort through resumes for job applicants, A.I. algorithms can quickly scan resumes and identify the most qualified candidates. This not only saves time, but also ensures that the best candidates are selected for the job.
A.I. can also be used to analyze data and make predictions about future trends. For example, by analyzing sales data, A.I. can predict which products are likely to be popular in the future. This allows businesses to make informed decisions about where to invest their resources and which products to focus on.
But A.I. isn't just useful for streamlining operations and making predictions. It can also be used to improve customer service. For example, chatbots powered by A.I. can handle customer inquiries 24/7, providing quick and accurate responses. This not only improves the customer experience, but also frees up employees to focus on more complex tasks.
Moreover, A.I. can also be used to improve security. For instance, A.I. can be used to detect and prevent fraud, by analyzing transaction data and identifying patterns that indicate suspicious activity. This not only protects businesses from financial loss, but also helps to ensure the safety of customers' personal information.
In conclusion, A.I. is changing the way businesses operate. With the power of A.I. at their disposal, companies no longer have to waste time and resources on mundane, repetitive tasks. Instead, they can focus on growth and innovation, and stay ahead of the curve in today's fast-paced business landscape. The future is brighter and more prosperous than ever before, and the time to embrace A.I. is now.

Vi has a new look, baby! And I finally have a concrete timeline for her after Coruscant. (Click for better quality)
After spending many painful years on Coruscant, Vi finally finds a way off the planet with the help of a few friends. She leaves her old life behind and embarks on several adventures. She connects with a rebel faction and helps them with the odd job here and there. However, she is very aware of the fact that she is one of the few remaining force-sensitive people alive with Jedi training. This fact weighs heavily on her and she tries her best to conform into the Jedi standard, but she feels like a fraud. She had been a terrible student, and it didn’t seem fair that the Jedi who were more skilled, confident, and powerful were the ones that died during the purge.
When she was young, it hadn’t been her choice to go to the temple and follow the Jedi path. Her parents had lived in poverty. When they discovered that Vi was force-sensitive, they sent her to the temple in hopes of providing her with a better life, but she never really fit in. Now, she’s faced with a choice: abandon the Jedi path even though she’s one of the few survivors, or follow her own path.
To help her on this self-discovery journey, she travels to Glee Anslem and reconnects with her family. She finds her brother, Sookin, on Glee Anslem. He was the leader of a small rebel faction on the planet. Their father had been the leader of this group initially, but he was captured and publicly executed by the Imperials. Their mother was captured too and she was transported to a work camp on the planet, filled with other native nautolans to do back breaking work. Sookin stepped up in his father’s place to lead the rebels, but their morale was low. They had endured many losses. When Vi arrived, it sparked hope within the group. Sookin knew of the Jedi’s skill and he knew Vi would be the one to change the tide of the conflict. Sookin devised a plan to infiltrate and free the prisoners in the work camp. Vi was hesitant at first because she had come to this planet to discover who she was outside of being a Jedi, but she quickly realized there wasn’t a choice. She agreed and the siege began. They were successful in freeing many prisoners, including their mother, but there were casualties too. Despite this, the nautolan rebels knew their luck was changing and turned to Vi with hope. Vi was unsure about this and believed their faith was unfounded. She still felt extremely uncertain about her abilities, and her mother could tell.
Vi’s mother was force sensitive too, but she was a healer. Nautolans don’t necessarily believe in the force, but they believe in something known as Ocean Spirit, which controls the balance of the ocean and the land. The ocean is neither good nor evil, and the nautolan people don’t believe in a defined line between the two, unlike the Jedi and Sith. Instead, they value a belief that is very similar to karma- if you are good, good things will come. Nautolans are a peaceful race and force sensitive people on Glee Anslem are revered and respected healers. They are seen as spiritual leaders that have a special connection to the Ocean Spirit and hold a very regarded place in the culture. Vi’s mother began to teach her daughter about the Ocean Spirit, and Vi quickly accepted the teaching. She could feel the Ocean Spirit around her and it reinvigorated her. Even though Vi wasn’t a traditional nautolan healer, the other rebels greatly respected her. With her influence, their missions were becoming more successful. They saw her as a warrior for their people and regarded her as their champion. Vi embraced this and after time, she became more confident in herself and who she was. She realized she was capable of protecting the people that needed her, and that meant the world to her. She still fights like a Jedi and regards many of their teachings, but she embraced the Ocean Spirit to guide her through the current of existence. After time, Vi’s mother gifted her with the shells of the Healers, which is a greatly respected and earned trinket to be worn through her tendrils to signify her connection with the Ocean Spirit. Now, Vi is a much more confident person who, for once in her life, is proud of who she is and her connection to the force.

The Importance of Cybersecurity in Today’s Digital World
In an era where technology governs nearly every aspect of our lives, cybersecurity has become a critical component of our personal and professional existence. From securing personal data to protecting national security, the role of cybersecurity in today’s digital world cannot be overstated. Let’s delve into why cybersecurity is more important than ever and how it safeguards our digital ecosystem.
Why Cybersecurity Matters
With the rapid advancement of technology, cyber threats have grown exponentially in scale and sophistication. Hackers, cybercriminals, and malicious actors are constantly devising new methods to exploit vulnerabilities. The implications of a cyberattack can range from personal inconvenience to catastrophic consequences for businesses and governments.
Key areas where cybersecurity plays a vital role include:
Protecting Personal Data
In the digital age, our personal information—such as social security numbers, financial details, and medical records—is often stored online. Cybersecurity measures help prevent unauthorized access to this sensitive data, protecting us from identity theft and financial fraud.
Ensuring Business Continuity
For organizations, a cyberattack can lead to operational downtime, loss of revenue, and damage to reputation. Cybersecurity ensures businesses can continue their operations without disruption by safeguarding critical data and infrastructure.
Defending National Security
Cyberattacks on government institutions can jeopardize national security. Robust cybersecurity measures are essential to protect critical infrastructure, including power grids, transportation systems, and defense networks.
Preventing Financial Loss
Cybercrime is a costly affair. According to recent reports, global cybercrime losses are projected to reach trillions of dollars annually. Investing in cybersecurity helps mitigate these losses and enhances trust in the digital economy.
Emerging Cybersecurity Threats
The digital landscape is constantly evolving, and so are the threats. Here are some of the most pressing challenges:
Ransomware Attacks: Malicious software that locks users out of their systems until a ransom is paid.
Phishing Scams: Deceptive emails or messages designed to steal sensitive information.
Social Engineering: Tactics that manipulate individuals into divulging confidential data.
Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs): Sophisticated, targeted attacks aimed at stealing data over an extended period.
How to Stay Secure in a Digital World
Cybersecurity is not just the responsibility of IT professionals; everyone has a role to play. Here are some best practices to enhance security:
Use Strong, Unique Passwords: Avoid using the same password for multiple accounts and enable two-factor authentication.
Keep Software Updated: Regularly update operating systems, applications, and antivirus software to patch vulnerabilities.
Be Cautious Online: Avoid clicking on suspicious links or downloading attachments from unknown sources.
Educate Yourself: Stay informed about the latest cyber threats and learn how to recognize them.
Secure Your Network: Use encrypted Wi-Fi and consider a virtual private network (VPN) for added security.
The Role of Ethical Hacking and Cybersecurity Training
Ethical hacking plays a crucial role in identifying vulnerabilities before malicious actors can exploit them. Companies invest in ethical hackers to simulate attacks and strengthen their defenses. Additionally, cybersecurity training programs equip individuals with the skills to tackle threats and ensure a safer digital environment.
Conclusion
As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, the importance of cybersecurity cannot be ignored. Whether you’re an individual protecting personal information or a business safeguarding assets, robust cybersecurity measures are essential. By staying vigilant and investing in the right tools and training, we can create a secure digital landscape for everyone.
Let’s embrace the challenge of cybersecurity and turn it into an opportunity for growth and resilience in the digital age.
