New Post has been published on https://horsetoloan.com/horse-health/how-do-wild-horses-trim-their-hooves/
How Do Wild Horses Trim Their Hooves
How Do Wild Horses Trim Their Hooves
Hoof health is an important part of equine grooming, and it is important to clean the hoof, as well as trim them routinely to ensure they do not get overgrown. This may bring to mind the question of how wild horses are able to care for their hooves, and whether or not they need to have their hooves trimmed like our domestic horses do.
After all, there are no farriers out in the wilderness! Read on to learn more about how wild horses trim their hooves in their natural environment, without the help of a farrier.
Importance of Trimming Hooves
Horses typically need to have their hooves trimmed down every 6 to 8 weeks.
This is done professionally by your horse’s farrier, and is not something expected of you as part of their daily grooming. It is so important to trim the hooves of your horse because, as domestic horses are kept in more confined spaces and are fed well, they will end up having hoof growth rates that then outpace the rate that they can wear them down naturally.
If your horse’s hooves become overgrown, they can become damaged, which causes injury to your horse. Even if the overgrown hooves do not become damaged or cracked, they can still create a lot of pain and discomfort for your horse when trying to move around. Overgrown hooves can also inhibit their range of movement.

How Do Wild Horses Trim Their Hooves
Now that you understand how important it is to trim a horse’s hooves, you may wonder how wild horses keep their hooves trimmed and in check. Wild horses do not have their hooves trimmed like our domestic horses do, where a farrier manually performs the task. Instead, their natural habitat helps to keep their hooves trimmed.
Wild horses do not have packed earth and flat ground like domestic horses are used to in the stables or the ring. They walk across varied and rough terrain each day, and this terrain is what works to naturally wear down and essentially trim the hoof of the wild horse.
They also walk great distances every day— for example, a zebra typically walks around 40 km in the wild— so this continued friction works to wear down the hooves, too. Wild horses have tougher hooves as well, which do not need shoeing or wearing down (also known as trimming).
Do Wild Horses Need to Trim Their Hooves
You may wonder if wild horses need to trim their hooves at all. Our domestic horses certainly need to! However, as we went over in some details above, wild horses do not need to manually trim their hooves in the way that domestic horses need to.
This is because wild horses trim down their hooves by walking in their natural habitats. Wild horses walk every day on varied terrain that naturally wears down the hoof so that it does not become overgrown. This negates the need for manual hoof trimming. Also, as mentioned above, wild horses walk long distances each day, which also helps. Our domestic horses often do not walk on the same terrains or move these same distances.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do wild horses get overgrown hooves?
Wild horses typically do not get overgrown hooves like our domestic horses can. You may wonder why this is, and it is in part due to the fact that wild horses are able to wear down their hooves in nature just by the terrain that they are walking on! Our domestic horses, however, do not spend as much time out on this kind of terrain, so their hooves have the potential to get overgrown, unlike the hooves of wild horses.
How do zebras trim their hooves in the wild?
Zebras and other breeds of wild horses are not able to trim their hooves in the wild like our domestic horses would— there is no visit to the farrier for these horses, that’s for sure! So how do they avoid their hooves getting overgrown, and how are they able to maintain their hooves without the help of a farrier to trim them? Zebras, when they are in the wild, will walk around 40 km every single day.
All of this walking on the natural terrains of the zebra’s habitat will provide natural wear to the animal’s hooves. However, if a zebra is in captivity, they will not be able to walk these same distances and would then need routine hoof trimmings to keep their hooves taken care of properly.
Do horses enjoy hoof trimming?
When it comes to horses and hoof trimming, we all know how important hoof trimmings are for the overall health of your horse. If you do not trim the hooves of your horse, then they can become overgrown, which can be uncomfortable or even painful, and can hinder their movement and abilities. We know that hoof trimmings are necessary, but we may also wonder whether or not it is uncomfortable for our horses.
Luckily, most horses do like hoof trimmings or hoof picking. If they do not enjoy hoof trimmings, though, most horses are at least neutral to it and do not actively dislike it! This can make you feel better about when you need to schedule an appointment for your horse for a trimming with the farrier.
How do wild horses groom themselves?
The grooming of our horses is a time-consuming and very important task. Brushing their coat and mane is something that is a daily requirement for most breeds to keep them happy and healthy, especially because horses are very intelligent and sensitive creatures. You may wonder, then, how wild horses groom themselves in the wild without our help! Wild horses typically engage in something called self-grooming.
Self-grooming is when horses rub on inanimate objects, nip, roll, and tail swish. Two horses may also engage in mutual grooming, where they stand parallel to each other and then groom by biting, licking, or pulling the mane, back, head, and hindquarters of their partner.

TheHorse.com | 14 August, 2020
Q: This time of year, my horse’s mane and tail get very dry, and even his coat seems dry. I use coat conditioners when I bathe him, but I’m wondering what I could do nutritionally that might help?
A: If you live in a hot, dry climate, preventing a dry mane and tail and coat can be challenging. I find this to be especially true of horses living in dry lots or with dirt runs where they are basically rolling in dust.
Other than using topical products to try to maintain coat quality, the best you can do is to give the horse’s skin and coat a fighting chance by ensuring you’re feeding all the building blocks needed to maintain skin and coat health.
Minerals
Key nutritional players in this arena are zinc, copper, fatty acids, and biotin. Zinc is vitally important to a number of enzymes in skin. Epithelial cells that make up skin require zinc for reproduction, maintenance, and repair. Additionally the synthesis of keratins (proteins that protect epithelial cells and that are found in hair) and other associated proteins rely on zinc for proper function. While zinc is found in forages, the amounts present might not meet your horse’s needs.
Copper is generally in even shorter supply in forages than zinc. Copper is necessary for the enzyme lysyl oxidase, which in turn is required to maintain the structural integrity of the cross-linkages that provide strength to collagen in the skin.
Together copper and zinc impact melanin, the protein responsible for hair pigmentation. Therefore, inadequate copper and zinc status might not only impact the keratinization of hair but also its color. Hair is at greater risk of oxidative damage if melanin is inadequate.
If you’re just feeding forage, consider adding a source of copper and zinc that provides about half of the National Research Council’s daily requirement, which for a 1,100-pound horse is 50 milligrams of copper and 200 milligrams of zinc. My preferred method is using one of the quality ration balancing feeds and supplements available on the market because they also supply other essential nutrients that might be missing in a forage-based diet.
If you’re already feeding a commercial feed, make sure that you’re following the feeding directions and offering adequate amounts, otherwise your horse might have deficiencies in nutrients key to coat quality.
Fat
The cell membrane layers that connect the cells that make up hair contain large amounts of fatty acids. The fat in the cuticle cells make them hydrophobic, meaning they don’t attract water. This acts to make them waterproof but also keeps moisture in. Cuticle cells should lie flat like shingles on a roof, but if they become damaged, they peel away from the hair allowing internal moisture to escape.
Therefore, ensuring adequate amounts of essential fatty acids in the diet might help improve coat quality. I particularly like sources of supplemental fats that provide more omega-3 fatty acids than omega-6, such as flax or camelina. For coat improvement purposes, I find plant-based sources to be more than adequate, and about 4 ounces of flax seed or 2 ounces of the oils should be enough for you to see an improvement in an average-sized horse.
Biotin
While we typically think of biotin in relation to hoof health, biotin also plays a role in skin and coat. Biotin is a B vitamin that is actually made by the bacteria in the horse’s hindgut making biotin deficiency unlikely.
However, in other species inadequate biotin results in poor quality skin and coat. This makes sense when you consider that biotin involved in fatty acid synthesis, amino acid metabolism, and a range of other metabolic pathways. While there are no guidelines for how much biotin to supplement to see improvement in coat quality, research suggests 20 to 30 milligrams for and average-sized horse to aid in hoof quality and we can assume similar levels are necessary to see coat improvements.
Take-Home Message
Ensuring that your horse has the building blocks necessary to create a healthy coat from the inside is your best way to defend against a dry coat. However, make sure that you are not shampooing your horse too frequently as this can remove naturally occurring oils. Additionally, look for simple shampoos that contain few detergents and avoid those with alcohol as these can strip the oils from a horse’s coat.

a shitshow of a brain-dump
Even though I keep thinking this episode is over, it never is. Or, it hasn’t been yet. Eventually, it will be. Hopefully sometime fucking soon. But today is not that day, my friends.
I went to bed at 4:30pm last night. Like, the afternoon. Slept til 7 this morning, too, which I guess isn’t a bad thing. It certainly beats being conscious. But maybe that’s a bad way to look at it haha, like, I shouldn’t want to be unconscious. It’s just like…how else am I supposed to deal while just waiting this fuckin’ thing out?
I was asking myself what’s better. Crying for hours, tears saturated with anguish and discomfort and uncertainty and fear? Or all-consuming emptiness, nothing left to think or feel or experience, al emotion lost in the void? They both suck. But it’s been changing up nightly, so there’s at least some variety in the fucking depression.
I had therapy this morning, which always helps, and it did help, and I’m so relieved because I’m still kinda riding that high even though I needed my Klonopin (that I’ve been taking daily, because why suffer, I can’t take the suffering).
Anyway. I went in all mopey and folded into myself as usual but she eventually got me talking (damn, how does she do that?) and I was able to breathe for 45 minutes and have that time as a break from wanting to cease existing just to escape the torment. I could go on forever about the miracles that happen there, while we sit next to each other on the floor by the window, but more on that later.
I hung out with a friend after, a fellow mental health warrior, and it was a great distraction, and she totally understood that I needed to bolt outta there once I felt the oncoming, out-of-nowhere panic attack ready to pounce.
Came home. Ate fucking food (berries and cottage cheese, weird but healthy, I guess?). I actually ate something with my therapist today too, she gave me some of those breakfast biscuit things, and I ate them, go me.
I took all my fucking vitamins and supplements. Multi bc I’m not getting enough shit I need, biotin because since I’m not getting the shit I need my hair is falling out. Magnesium because it’s supposed to help with anxiety. PassionFlower extract because that is alsooo supposed to help with anxiety and I am desperate.
I also feel the need to say that I’m doing everything right. I’m taking the meds and stopping to inhale and exhale like a normal human, I’m tryinggggg to stay positive. I’m disheartened (and fucking furious) that this still happened.
Now for the brain-dump part that probably isn’t going to make any sense because it’s literally just random nonsense I typed up throughout the day.
I was thinking about what I want right now (an end to the torture, a plan of attack to kick back at this bullshit, some internal motivation that doesn’t dissipate abruptly and painfully) and about what I need (aside from a damn miracle). Like, how do I ask for help from people? What can I tell them I need? Basically I just need patience. Lots of love and affection (all the hugs and cuddles, please). I need work to be understanding about this. Which they are. It’s just ugh I’m still embarrassed.
Okay, now a word on understanding. I hate when people tell me they understand because unless they have bipolar, they most certainly do not and don’t insult me by saying that you do. I’m not gonna invalidate the pain other people feel, that’d be a shitty thing to do. But like, it’s insulting and upsetting. If I’m trying to explain how in my dark moments I literally CANNOT see clearly, I CANNOT fathom a time when I wasn’t in pain or a time when I won’t be in pain, I CANNOT function…and you tell me you’ve been there? Well then why can’t I just “be positive” and move on, like you apparently were able to do. I don’t wanna rant about this too much, but like. It’s on my mind.
I also had this random thought: I take one step forward, two steps back, two steps forward, one step back. I’m staying in the same place (cue bitter frustration seeping out of my brain). But I’m kinda dancing with it. Dancing in place. Like, what I mean by that is I’m trying. I’m doing new things and trying my best (when I am capable of it) and just. I dunno, is that a good perspective?
Lastly, I’m trying to find a way to love myself even with my malfunctioning, glitch-ridden brain. Even with my blossoming bouquet of mental illnesses. What I really mean by that is I’m trying to be proud of myself in spite of feeling like a total failure. I mean, yeah, surviving on a daily basis is a HUGE accomplishment for someone who’s got a mental illness. If you’re in that category of people, congrats and I’m so proud of you. But like gahhh I wanna be proud of myself and it seems to be a struggle for me. I’m gonna try being patient. I mean, nothing says I can’t get back up on the horse and try again. Actually, I’m gonna do that. Because I really have no choice, but because that’s how I like to think I am. Resilient, blah blah, we know. Bipolars are resilient. But, like. Yeah.
Some definitions:
Fail- to be unsuccessful in achieving one’s goals
Success- the accomplishment of an aim or purpose
Goal- the object of a person’s ambition or effort, the desired aim or result
Ambition- a strong desire to do or achieve something, typically requiring determination and hard work
And some quotes:
“Failure is not a sin” –dunno who said it but my HS principal said this at our graduation
The only way to fail is to not try –again, dunno who said it, but we all know this basic idea, don’t we
“Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently” –apparently Henry Ford said this
Success is a journey, not a destination –I think of happiness the same way, interesting
“Ambition is believing in yourself even when no one else in the world does”
I’m just trying to convince myself that I’m worthy of the time it’s gonna take for me to get my shit to an acceptable level of “together.” The words I typed up there totally aren’t gonna make sense if anyone reads them, buuuuut maybe when I go back and read this thingggg later, it’ll jog something in my brain that helps.
Alrighty. Enough smashing this keyboard for the night.

What Is Biotin?
First things first, what exactly is biotin? Biotin is the name for a particular member of the B family of vitamins. It can be found in some food sources such as eggs, bananas, and milk, among others. In addition, biotin can be found to be used in many different metabolic processes.
These may include those that are related to the utilization of amino acids, fats, and carbohydrates.
Biotin often is recommended to treat issues like hair loss or to improve the health of nails, skin, and hair— both in humans and in animals. Below, we will go over the benefits of biotin as it pertains to your horse in greater detail.
What Does Biotin Do For Your Horse?
As was mentioned above, biotin can be used as a treatment for issues with skin or hair health. It can also be used to improve the health of your horse’s hooves. It is crucial for cell growth and is said to be a kind of “intercellular glue”.
Not only can biotin improve the health and sturdiness of your equine partner’s hooves, but it can also help to keep their coats healthy, and keep the hair of their mane and tail in tip top shape as well.
This is because biotin helps to maintain and improve keratin’s structure within the body. Keratin is the basic protein that makes up our hair, nails, and skin, just as it makes up the hair, hooves, and skin of your horse.
How Much Biotin Should You Give Your Horse?
There are many symptoms of a biotin deficiency to watch out for. If your horse is suffering from brittle mane or tail, or a dull coat, for example, a biotin supplement can help. When their hooves are deteriorating or weakening— some examples being a soft white line on the hoof or a thin hoof wall— this can also be a sign that more biotin is needed in your horse’s diet.
The amount of biotin that you should add to your horse’s diet will partially depend on their size and weight. The general rule of thumb is to give your horse between 4 and 8 mg of biotin for each 100 kg of your horse’s weight.
For a 500 kg horse, then, this would equate to 20 to 40 mg of biotin every day. Biotin is also a commitment— you will want to give it to your horse for no less than a 6 month period, every day. This gives you time for the results to show!

Frequently Asked Questions
How much biotin can you feed a horse?
Biotin can be an important supplement to add to your horse’s diet, but you may wonder, then, how much of it you should give to your horse in order to see effects. Often, the amount of a nutrient, medicine, or supplement that you should give to an animal will depend upon the size of the horse. The bigger the horse, the larger the dose you will need in order to see results, typically.
For the average horse, then the requirements are generally between 15 and 20 mg every day. The dose can be recommended up to 30 mg daily, though, especially for larger horses!
How much biotin should I give my horse for hooves?
Biotin is a nutrient or supplement that is often used for improving the health of the hooves in horses or other hoofed livestock animals. In order to see results in your horse, you will want to be sure you add the biotin to their daily intake and administer the right amount, too. Of course, you may wonder what the right amount is in the first place!
This is not the same amount for every horse— there is not a blanket amount of biotin that you should administer. This will depend upon how much your horse weighs. The general rule of thumb, then, is that you should give your horse anywhere between 4 and 8 mg for every 100 kg of their weight.
This should be done for at least 6 months in order to start seeing results!
Does biotin help horse hair growth?
Biotin can be added to your horse’s food and daily nutritional intake for a few different health benefits. It is commonly recommended in order to help with hoof health, as well as with hair growth, including the coat, mane, and tail of your horse.
It is also important to note that you will not see results right away, so you are not expecting this. Adding biotin to your horse’s diet should be done for at least 6 months so that you give your horse’s body the time it needs to put the nutrients to work and then improve hoof, hair, and coat growth.
What are the deficiency signs of biotin in horses?
If your horse has a biotin deficiency, you may want to look into adding it to their diet as a supplement for their health. You may wonder, then, what the signs are of a biotin deficiency in horses. Horses that have a biotin deficiency will often exhibit reduced quality of their hooves.
This can look like hooves that have a soft white line, hooves that are cracking or crumbling, or hooves that have a thin or friable hoof wall. Poor coat quality can be another sign of a potential biotin deficiency in your horse to watch out for.

By Justine Griffin
Joint. Hoof. Coat. Digestive aid. Weight gain. Calming. Energy. Recovery. You name it, there’s a supplement for that.
Horse owners spend hundreds of dollars a month on supplements for their animals, especially if their horses have a specific deficiency or compete regularly and at strenuous levels. But how do we know if these supplements are really aiding our horses? Most of the time we don’t. And not to burst your bubble, but equine nutritionists agree that there’s a severe lack of scientific research out there to prove whether most these supplements actually help our horses.
“More often than not, there’s not good evidence out there to back up the claims that supplements do what they say they do,” said Lori Warren, an equine nutritionist with the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla.
Some studies show that there are properties in a couple of supplements, like those formulated to help hooves and joints, that can aid some horses but not others. Overall, the science is limited, said Kathleen Crandell, an equine nutritionist with Kentucky Equine Research in Versailles, Ky.
Tumblr media
“Whether they’re backed up by research is questionable. It’s dependent on the company and the integrity of that company,” Kathleen explained. “Some companies will fund research at universities, but it can be quite expensive. They’re not necessarily motivated to do research if their supplement is already on the shelves and people are buying it.”
The supplement industry isn’t regulated the same way drugs are, even though both are overseen by the Food and Drug Administration in the U.S.. However, consumers can file complaints about adverse effects of supplements to the FDA, which can open specific cases against a company or a product.
Often times there are properties in supplements that are good for horses, like biotin for hooves, but the amount needed to make a difference is much greater than what’s usually found in one supplement tub. Same goes for electrolytes. Plain salt is a great aid for working horses, especially in hot and humid conditions, but most commercial supplements have more sugar and other unecessary properties in them than salt, Lori said.
A good rule of thumb is to add a supplement if your horse has a specific problem. Biotin won’t help horses hooves grow faster or stronger if they don’t have brittle or soft hooves to begin with, Kathleen explained. While some consumers use joint supplements as a preventative measure, it’s hard to say whether or not it actually helps the animal in the long run.
“We think of human athletes, like people who run triathlons, and try to apply what works for them to our athletic horses, which isn’t the same thing,” Lori described. “Basically you’ve got a big vegetarian, and if they’re being fed a high quality diet, they’re probably not lacking a lot in terms of being able to repair muscle tissue after exercise all on their own.”
So horse owners should focus on their horses’ core diet, like balanced grain and forage, before considering supplements that may or may not be a waste of money.
“We have the best knowledge about feeding and supporting the body and its tissues through the routine nutrients a horse needs,” Lori explained. “That comes from feed, where we can monitor calorie intake, protein levels, vitamins and minerals. A well-balanced diet of grain and high quality hay and grass is what we know works. Everything else, you’re gambling if they do or don’t do what they say.”
Nutritionists say consumers should be critical of any product they consider to feed their horse. Try it for 30 days and if you don’t see results, it probably means it’s not having an effect on your horse.
“Supplements will be absorbed, for the most part, even if they don’t need them. But they’ll pee out whatever extra the body won’t use,” Lori said. “But there are elements of supplements that we just don’t know if they absorb, like glucosamine. It’s complicated and we should remember we can do damage.”

The naturally sun-cured alfalfa is moderately high in protein and calories while being low in sugar with digestible fiber to support the health of your equine friend. This feed is formulated by allowing Standlee’s Premium Western Forage to grow to a length that mimics natural grazing for your pal—the plants are then cut and air-dried under the sun. The forage is bailed at the optimal time to ensure the freshest and best quality feed for your friend and fractures in the forage create a palatable residue for your sidekick that resembles dust. Bands on the hay should be cut 8-10 hours prior to feeding to allow the bale to expand and form natural flakes.
Key Benefits
Sun-cured alfalfa is moderately high in protein, high in calories and digestible fiber and low in sugar and carbohydrates.Suitable for growing horses, horses sensitive to carbohydrates, horses with gastric ulcers and mares late in pregnancy.Natural forage is grown to a specific length that is intended to mimic grazing.Noxious weed-free, certified by the State of Idaho Department of Agriculture. All Standlee products are proudly made in the USA. When the compressed bale of hay is manufactured, fractures in the forage are created, which can sometimes resemble dust. These fractures are actually very palatable for horses and are often considered the “candy” of the bale.

Do you do anything special to grow out your pony’s tail? Due to getting so trashed last winter (cold air + 25% humidity = BRITTLE hair.) this last show season my mare’s tail was barely below her hocks. It’s grown though! Ive also just bagged it for the
(continued) I sent that too early, lmao. I’ve already bagged her tail for the coming winter, which I really think will make a difference, but do you do anything special to keep your horse’s tail long and healthy? Thank you!!I’m a lazy p.o.s. so I don’t do anything beyond braiding, bagging, and occasionally putting a leave in conditioner in his tail so it stays conditioned during the winter and doesn’t dry out too much, but one of my mutuals has some product recommendations in a post here from a previous ask another anon sent me. I did start him on a biotin supplement since his hooves are a nightmare, but it will take several months before we see results from that. But I mean honestly, braiding and bagging is going to be the number one thing- you’d be shocked how much of a difference it makes in your horse’s tail. Also keep up on it. (Unlike me, who’s been a lazy p.o.s. who hasn’t done his tail in…3 months? Pray for me, I’m getting it knocked out tomorrow).ALSO. Electrical tape is your best friend, if you loop the tail. I swear one day I’mma write that guide on how to grow a tail out. I might get pictures and whatnot when I do his tail tomorrow.
