To the great relief of the two Sisters, their teasing comments made Starswirl laugh in turn, and he thanked them keeping him company while he regained his energy, even though it annoyed him to no end that he did not know when he would be allowed to leave; he felt he was strong enough to walk again, and he wanted to stretch his legs, but just as he threw off the covers, the Princesses stopped him.
Just moving his body to sit upright, before he could even place his hooves on the ground, Starswirl felt his energy leave him, and he said that he felt strange as he placed his hoof on his head, when Celestia wrapped her arms around him, and Luna rushed outside; and he closed his eyes as his vision darkened, before Celestia gently laid his body back on the bed, and Luna came back with the Doctor.
Fortunately, mere moments after Celestia carefully helped Starswirl to lie down, just as the Doctor made it to the edge of his bed, he opened his eyes again, and asked her what had happened, to which she kindly requested him to be still, and rest; and both Celestia and Luna apologised to the Doctor for not stopping Starswirl, when she interrupted them, and told them that they did the right thing.
As she checked his heartbeat and breathing, the Doctor continued, and said that while it would have been best to prevent him from even moving his blanket aside, they could not have predicted what the Bearded would do; and after she gave him some energy-rich supplement, she sighed deeply, before she reassured the Sisters that they did the next best thing by catching him, and by asking her to help.
Since they were so quick in helping him lie down again and leading her to his room, they managed to protect him from the worst outcome, even though it also meant that they had to keep a closer eye on Starswirl for a while, until he was back to where he was before; and after Celestia and Luna sighed in relief, they thanked the Doctor for her help, and asked her if they could do anything in return.
After a moment of thought, the Doctor briefly shook her head, before she stopped herself, and added that it would be very helpful if they could help the Bearded understand the importance of listening to and following what he was told; for it was clear they held great mutual respect for one another, and she hoped he would be more open to receiving help and resting in bed if they told him to do so.
With a solemn nod to the Doctor, Celestia and Luna moved aside to give her some room, and after she made sure that Starswirl was stable and resting, she politely gestured for them to tell him what he needed to hear, before she left; and although the Princesses briefly wondered whether Starswirl had heard her, when they took his hooves again, he smiled, and asked them where the kind Pony had gone.
Warm smiles grew on the Sisters' faces as they told Starswirl that the kind Pony was the Doctor who was treating him, who left the room a moment ago after confirming that he was all right, and giving him some additional help; but since they were almost too late to help him, he had to understand how critical it was for him to rest and recover his energy, until the Doctor judged him healthy enough.
Even though he may feel strong and rested, he would need significantly longer to fully recover, and they would not let him undo the progress he made by overworking himself to the point of exhaustion, which was closer than he might think; so, for the first lesson, they asked him to listen, and to be open to accepting help when he was offered it, especially now he was in such a vulnerable position.
As Starswirl's smile brightened, he slowly nodded to the Princesses, and promised to stay in bed as long as he needed, even though he admitted that it did not feel right to ask them for help on every little thing; but he sighed, and quietly said that he had to get used to being a burden for others, despite the fact that many others had been in his exact position, and he had always supported them.
With his promise to rest, Celestia and Luna asked him if he wanted anything, to which he said:
"It would be nice to see the others again…"

7 Tips To Improve Concentration
It's often said our attention span is shorter than ever, and a survey from energy supplements brand ProPlus found that 41 per cent thought it was worse since the pandemic.
But there are steps you can take to help you focus better.
1 - Minimise distraction
Removing yourself from people and devices will allow you to concentrate better. Work in a different room if you can. If you find yourself sidetracked by digital devices, turn off notifications and train yourself to check them at set intervals. Set a timer.
2 - Find the right sound
Whether it's music, white noise or even silence, you might find there's a particular sound that helps you maintain your attention. This enhances alpha waves-brain waves that promote relaxation and are thought to play a role in cognition and, according to a small 2015 American study, make you more creative.
3 - Move your body
When you exercise, your heart rate increases, prompting your body to release a protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF, which aids nerve cell growth. This is important for concentration, memory and learning.
4 - Focus on the right foods
You might get a boost from certain so-called "brain foods". These include fish, nuts, blueberries and dark chocolate (in moderation, of course!). One of the best ways to keep your brain in trim is to eat a healthy diet.
5 - Sleep well
Who doesn't suffer from brain fog after a bad night? Everyone needs different amounts of shut-eye but aiming for seven to nine hours is considered the ideal.
6 - Structure your life
Having a daily routine, including breaks, will minimise the brain fatigue that goes with having to make endless on-the- hoof decisions and allow you to focus on the really important stuff.
7 - Fix attention-sapping health issues
Tackle hearing problems, which demand excessive and sometimes exhausting concentration, sleep apnoea or depression, and consider whether you might have ADHD.

Ah. Suppose I should drop by for an update or something.
Got depressed about Situations for a bit and overwhelmed by So Many Things for a long time so I just sort of fell off Tumblr.
Let’s speedrun some general horse stuff:
- Nav got the Rembrandt fitted and it’s apparently weirdly, magically perfect for him - despite being an old throwaway a visiting trainer just wanted to be rid of. I’m glad I took a chance on it.
- His feet are still a work in progress, but getting better each time. He’s now barefoot again and sound as a bell! (Personally I think he’s glad to finally be rid of the steels).
- He got clipped, then immediately grew it almost fully back in.
- Bought a decent medium-weight blanket for him from another boarder that couldn’t use it.
- Haunches in still ain’t happening.
- He apparently loves my younger brother? Really cute honestly.
- Adjusted his supplement regimen to include hoof support, now that he’s barefoot again (on top of joint + calming support).
- He recently got a “bad report card” from the barn owner. The most recent hay shipment we got is a lot richer than the last few, and it’s given him so much Idiot Energy that he doesn’t know what to do with, that he’s started being a bit of an asshole to some of his herd members. Which means I need to go back to seeing/riding him more often again to balance that out (we’ve been on a reduced winter schedule, y’all know how it goes). At the very least, he’s turning 18 this year and still doesn’t act his age, so I guess I don’t need to worry about him slowing down any time soon.
- He’s still my best boy tho. He’s been great for everything I’ve been asking of him (minus one recent ride where the Idiot Energy needed to be worked through, and then he went back to being great).
- Bonus: We unexpectedly received a year end award from the MDA for our first level work last year! We got a fancy certificate and plaque and everything. Very proud of us.
#Navaho#My horse#My life shit includes: money issues; school issues; new job; lost motivation/gained sadness so I saw Nav less#Also kind of got stuck while on a pre-planned trip abroad#But thankfully everything is mostly settled now and I’m alright - just busier than usual

The Goatpreneur's Handbook: Strategies for Successful Farming
Introduction
In recent years, goat farming has gained significant popularity among entrepreneurs and farmers alike. The versatile nature of goats, their adaptability to various climates, and the increasing demand for goat products make goat farming a lucrative venture. To embark on a successful goat farming journey, aspiring goatpreneurs need to understand and implement effective strategies. This article serves as a handbook, outlining key strategies for successful goat farming.
Selecting the Right Breed
Choosing the right breed is crucial for the success of any goat farming venture. Different breeds have distinct characteristics, such as milk production, meat quality, and resistance to diseases. Assess the market demand and your farming goals before selecting a breed. Popular choices include Boer, Saanen, and Nubian goats for meat and dairy production.
Optimal Farm Setup and Infrastructure
Creating a suitable environment for your goats is essential for their health and productivity. Adequate shelter, proper fencing, and a well-ventilated barn are critical components of a successful goat farm. Ensure that the farm layout allows for easy movement of goats, and provide separate spaces for feeding, resting, and kidding.
Nutrition Management
Goats are known for their adaptability to diverse diets, but their nutritional needs must be met for optimal health and productivity. Develop a balanced diet that includes a mix of forages, grains, and supplements. Regularly monitor the herd's body condition and adjust the feeding regimen accordingly. Access to clean water is also vital for their well-being.
Healthcare Protocols
Implementing a robust healthcare routine is paramount in goat farming. Regular vaccinations, deworming, and hoof trimming are essential practices to prevent diseases and maintain the overall health of the herd. Establish a relationship with a veterinarian who can provide guidance on preventive measures and offer prompt treatment in case of illnesses.
Breeding Strategies
Effective breeding strategies are essential for sustaining and expanding your goat herd. Consider factors such as the age, health, and genetics of the goats when planning breeding programs. Keep detailed records of breeding dates, kidding, and health status to track the performance of your herd and make informed decisions for future breeding.

Marketing and Product Diversification
A successful goatpreneur understands the importance of marketing their products effectively. Explore various avenues to sell goat products, including local markets, restaurants, and online platforms. Diversify your product range by offering not only meat and milk but also value-added products like cheese, soap, and fertilizer. Building a brand around your farm can enhance customer loyalty and attract new clients.
Continuous Learning and Networking
Goat farming, like any other business, evolves over time. Stay updated on the latest farming techniques, market trends, and technological advancements in the agricultural sector. Attend workshops, conferences, and join online forums to network with fellow goat farmers. Sharing experiences and learning from others can provide valuable insights for improving your goat farming practices.
Financial Management
Implementing sound financial management practices is crucial for the sustainability of your goat farming venture. Keep detailed records of income and expenses, and create a budget to guide your financial decisions. Consider factors such as feed costs, veterinary expenses, and equipment maintenance when setting prices for your products. This approach ensures that your goat farming business remains profitable in the long run.
Conclusion
Goat farming presents a promising opportunity for entrepreneurs seeking a sustainable and profitable agricultural venture. By employing these key strategies, aspiring goatpreneurs can lay the foundation for a successful and fulfilling goat farming experience. From selecting the right breed to implementing effective healthcare practices and marketing strategies, the Goatpreneur's Handbook provides a comprehensive guide for those looking to thrive in the world of goat farming.

Goats
A documentation of my experience with Goats at the Happy Herd Farm Animal Sanctuary.
General Information
The goat is a livestock animal that comes from the Capra genus (Binomial Nomenclature: Capra hircus) They appear similar to sheep, in that they have horizontal, thin pupils, live in herds, the males have horns, but goats have a thinner coat, tufts of hair (or beards) under their chin, and less curled horns. Like cows and antelope, goats are a type of mammals called ruminants, meaning they have a four chambered stomach, allowing them to break down even low-quality feed. They were domesticated for their milk, hide, meat, and fur 10 000 years ago, and now there are around goat 300 species in the world today.
Behaviour
Goats are social with both other goats and people, but they can also be very independent and curious compared to other herd animals like sheep. They are clever animals, and can often be found escaping their enclosures— usually by jumping — just for the sake of a challenge.
They can be aggressive, even if in my experience, they’re very friendly towards humans. Though both sheep and goats use their horns to headbutt their opponents, goats stand on their hind legs to ram downwards. Goats also often stand in this manner to feed on higher up foods like leaves or twigs. There is a strict social hierarchy among goats based on age, body size and horn size, and it is generally recommended to wait until they approach you first. If a goat likes you, it will slowly walk up to you, and they may even rub their head against your leg or lean on you.
Care
Goats are relatively easier to care for compared to other animals like horse or cows, as they can graze on almost any plants
As mentioned before, goats are herd animals, so they work best in spacious areas with other goats to keep them company. About 15-20 square feet per goat is recommended for indoor areas (depending on their individual size) while 25–50 square feet per doe, 32–97 square feet bucks, and 5–32 square feet per kid (according to backyardgoats.iamcountryside.com). Straw or bedding is optional, as though it provides insulation but can also be expensive. Similarly, a decent shelter to serve as a cover from any storms or rain is appreciated.
Goats are famous for their ability to jump, so fences must be constructed appropriately. To be safe, fences should be over four and a half feet for larger goats, and over four feet for the miniature ones. Goats can also be smarter than we think, and here on Happy Herd Sanctuary, we have routine attempts of these escape artists chewing through the softer wires or dashing out the gate when people enter.
As for food, goats generally feed on whatever weed or grass growing from the ground, but they do need a steady supply of hay. Goats in heat or rut can also require supplemental feed, which can be found in feed or pet stores. Lastly, to ensure the goats’ health, extra minerals and vitamins are recommended. A constant supply of clean water is also a must, so their water buckets must be changed at least three times throughout the day.
On Happy Herd, we regularly clean, feed and brush our goats to fight off disease and ensure they stay healthy. Vaccinations, hoof trims, and worm prevention is also integral to the goats’ health. A livestock veterinarian can be consulted on such matters.

How Do Wild Horses Trim Their Hooves
How Do Wild Horses Trim Their Hooves
Hoof health is an important part of equine grooming, and it is important to clean the hoof, as well as trim them routinely to ensure they do not get overgrown. This may bring to mind the question of how wild horses are able to care for their hooves, and whether or not they need to have their hooves trimmed like our domestic horses do.
After all, there are no farriers out in the wilderness! Read on to learn more about how wild horses trim their hooves in their natural environment, without the help of a farrier.
Importance of Trimming Hooves
Horses typically need to have their hooves trimmed down every 6 to 8 weeks.
This is done professionally by your horse’s farrier, and is not something expected of you as part of their daily grooming. It is so important to trim the hooves of your horse because, as domestic horses are kept in more confined spaces and are fed well, they will end up having hoof growth rates that then outpace the rate that they can wear them down naturally.
If your horse’s hooves become overgrown, they can become damaged, which causes injury to your horse. Even if the overgrown hooves do not become damaged or cracked, they can still create a lot of pain and discomfort for your horse when trying to move around. Overgrown hooves can also inhibit their range of movement.

How Do Wild Horses Trim Their Hooves
Now that you understand how important it is to trim a horse’s hooves, you may wonder how wild horses keep their hooves trimmed and in check. Wild horses do not have their hooves trimmed like our domestic horses do, where a farrier manually performs the task. Instead, their natural habitat helps to keep their hooves trimmed.
Wild horses do not have packed earth and flat ground like domestic horses are used to in the stables or the ring. They walk across varied and rough terrain each day, and this terrain is what works to naturally wear down and essentially trim the hoof of the wild horse.
They also walk great distances every day— for example, a zebra typically walks around 40 km in the wild— so this continued friction works to wear down the hooves, too. Wild horses have tougher hooves as well, which do not need shoeing or wearing down (also known as trimming).
Do Wild Horses Need to Trim Their Hooves
You may wonder if wild horses need to trim their hooves at all. Our domestic horses certainly need to! However, as we went over in some details above, wild horses do not need to manually trim their hooves in the way that domestic horses need to.
This is because wild horses trim down their hooves by walking in their natural habitats. Wild horses walk every day on varied terrain that naturally wears down the hoof so that it does not become overgrown. This negates the need for manual hoof trimming. Also, as mentioned above, wild horses walk long distances each day, which also helps. Our domestic horses often do not walk on the same terrains or move these same distances.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do wild horses get overgrown hooves?
Wild horses typically do not get overgrown hooves like our domestic horses can. You may wonder why this is, and it is in part due to the fact that wild horses are able to wear down their hooves in nature just by the terrain that they are walking on! Our domestic horses, however, do not spend as much time out on this kind of terrain, so their hooves have the potential to get overgrown, unlike the hooves of wild horses.
How do zebras trim their hooves in the wild?
Zebras and other breeds of wild horses are not able to trim their hooves in the wild like our domestic horses would— there is no visit to the farrier for these horses, that’s for sure! So how do they avoid their hooves getting overgrown, and how are they able to maintain their hooves without the help of a farrier to trim them? Zebras, when they are in the wild, will walk around 40 km every single day.
All of this walking on the natural terrains of the zebra’s habitat will provide natural wear to the animal’s hooves. However, if a zebra is in captivity, they will not be able to walk these same distances and would then need routine hoof trimmings to keep their hooves taken care of properly.
Do horses enjoy hoof trimming?
When it comes to horses and hoof trimming, we all know how important hoof trimmings are for the overall health of your horse. If you do not trim the hooves of your horse, then they can become overgrown, which can be uncomfortable or even painful, and can hinder their movement and abilities. We know that hoof trimmings are necessary, but we may also wonder whether or not it is uncomfortable for our horses.
Luckily, most horses do like hoof trimmings or hoof picking. If they do not enjoy hoof trimmings, though, most horses are at least neutral to it and do not actively dislike it! This can make you feel better about when you need to schedule an appointment for your horse for a trimming with the farrier.
How do wild horses groom themselves?
The grooming of our horses is a time-consuming and very important task. Brushing their coat and mane is something that is a daily requirement for most breeds to keep them happy and healthy, especially because horses are very intelligent and sensitive creatures. You may wonder, then, how wild horses groom themselves in the wild without our help! Wild horses typically engage in something called self-grooming.
Self-grooming is when horses rub on inanimate objects, nip, roll, and tail swish. Two horses may also engage in mutual grooming, where they stand parallel to each other and then groom by biting, licking, or pulling the mane, back, head, and hindquarters of their partner.

Muskoka Farm Pre Training
Muskoka Farm is a high-tech pre training, breaking and spelling facility with five stable barns, 58 stables, 27 day yards, 10 large fully fenced paddocks, 63 individually fenced spelling yards and 2000m track.
The farm is a favorite among trainers. It offers a slew of amenities like private jetty, pontoon and outdoor pool. To know more about Pre Training, visit the Muskoka Farm website or call (02)45663106.
Aside from the requisite grooming routines, there is a lot to be said for a good sweat, and an appropriate diet. But if you are looking for something a little less strenuous and a bit more rewarding, you're in luck! a few savvy horse owners have been putting their time and money to the test. The results are a plethora of high-rollers and an impressive list of equine kinks. The best part? The best of the bunch are slated to go home for a good long while.
In addition to proper exercise, a diet rich in protein, carbohydrates, fresh fruits and vegetables is essential for horse performance. A proper nutritional plan also aids in the recovery of a speller and allows it to resume training sooner.
As well, a healthy hindgut is necessary for the efficient digestion of fibre and vitamins that aid in a horse’s performance. It also promotes a healthy hoof and helps prevent ulcers and other digestive issues.
A good feed for horses in spell time is a mixture of grain, chaff, and pasture. It should include a variety of grains, including wheat, barley, corn, and oats.
The District of Muskoka and area municipalities must develop logical policies to support local food production. This will help enhance the local food system and thereby increase food security in Muskoka.
Athletes often use dietary supplements to help improve their overall performance and/or enhance their appearance. These products might include vitamins, minerals, herbs, or amino acids.
While these substances are important to athletes’ overall health, they do not substitute for a well-balanced diet or adequate rest and sleep. Taking supplements can be a risky and even dangerous proposition, especially when paired with other over-the-counter or prescription drugs.
Athletes may also turn to dietary supplements when they are dealing with a medical condition, such as low vitamin or mineral levels or food allergies/intolerances. Fortunately, there are some dietary supplements that have been proven to be safe and effective when used correctly and under appropriate supervision.
Muskoka Farm is an elite state of the art horse spelling and training facility that was established in 1969 by Bob Lapointe. This stunning property is situated on the Hawkesbury River and has been a favourite among some of Australia's leading trainers.
It is home to five stable barns, 58 stables and a 2000m track. It also features a private jetty/pontoon, large outdoor pool, helipad and two-bedroom guest house.
The facility is part owned by Australian businessman David Boehm and has a plethora of high tech facilities including an 18-horse quarantine facility and a hyperbaric oxygen chamber. To know more about Pre Training, visit the Muskoka Farm website or call (02)45663106.
This one of a kind property is a must see for anyone in the racing industry or even just a fan of horse training. It is located on the Hawkesbury River an hour inland from Sydney and is a calming retreat for your racehorses and yourself.

Chapter 4: Summertime
Read on ao3
-
“See and this is my girl Patsy. She’s the smallest of the three, but she’s strong as all get out.”
Steve gestured to the horse, brushing his hand down her long nose. She was a beautiful dark brown, her coat sleek and obviously well-kept. Steve said he washed and brushed his horses each night, keeping them free of flies and dirt.
Steve’s three horses were together in the little paddock, grazing on the sparse grass. There was a large oil drum filled with water in the paddock for them, and a trough filled with hay and horse feed.
Steve had brought a bag with them out to the paddock, and he whistled through his teeth, all three horses gathering around him at the fence. June used her nose to bump Steve on the side of the head.
He smiled at her, one a’ those real sunshiney ones he had, and kissed her between the eyes.
He dug through the bag, pulling out a few apples, a pocket knife, and a Tupperware container filled with various pills.
Billy simply watched as he cut one of the apples in half, digging out small pockets in the meat of the apple and meticulously inserting the pills. He repeated the exact same procedure with the other half of the apple and offered the first half to June.
She crunched it happily, the second half of the apple going to Loretta, a beautiful dappled horse with a dark-colored nose.
Each horse got three apple halves with the correct combination of pills.
“They each get supplements twice a day. We get the hay locally every place we stop, and depending on where the hay is grown, it can lack nutrition they need. Plus, traveling horses can get digestive problems from working hard and not having a lot of grazing opportunities. I wanna keep my girls healthy, you know?”
Loretta had wandered away after Steve set the bag on the ground, huffing as she realized apple time was over. June stayed with Steve, softly knocking her nose into his head and shoulder, making Steve laugh brightly and pet her neck.
Patsy stayed in front of Billy, and he felt like she could see into his fucking soul. Her brown eyes were huge as she appraised him, almost as if she was trying to suss out if he was good enough for her Steve.
“You can pet her, if you like. All my girls have been raised with us since they were foals, so they’re real touchy. Loretta pretends she’s too cool for it.” Loretta, as if hearing Steve say her name, gave another huff from the other side of the paddock. “Yeah! I’m talkin’ ‘bout you, Letty. We all know you’re a softy!” Steve grinned at Billy after calling out towards her, like they were sharing a joke.
Billy couldn’t stop the corners of his mouth from pulling up.
He smiled a lot around Steve.
He looked back towards Patsy and mimicked the way Steve pet June, keeping his hands gentle and soft as he brushed down the length of her nose.
Her hair was so soft, and she felt like warm velvet underneath his hand.
“I’ve never been this close to a horse before,” Billy said softly, not taking his eyes off Patsy and the way his hands brushed down her strong neck.
“I love horses. Always have.” Steve had wrapped his arms around June’s thick neck, his cheek smushed to her as he looked at Billy. It was cute. Everything Steve did was cute. “Not to sound like a horse girl in a Lifetime movie, but they’re just so great. Sometimes it seems like they know everything.”
“Yeah, they’re real human.” Billy thinks it was all in the eyes. The huge, deep brown eyes.
Billy had really come to appreciate brown eyes in the last two weeks.
“June was born when I was nearly six. I’ve been riding her since I was seven or so. There weren’t a lot of kids around so she was kinda my best friend. Which. Sounds totally lame.” Steve’s cheeks went pink, and he hugged June tighter.
“How long have you had the others?”
“I’ve had Patsy for seven years. Loretta’s the newest. I just started training her for the event last summer, although I’ve had her for a while. Horses are considered fully grown when they’re five, so we don’t make them do events before then. It can be bad for their backs if you start riding them too young.” Steve absentmindedly stroked down June’s neck. “I try to keep my girls healthy and safe. If you really take care of them, they can live to be about forty, although they shouldn’t do rodeo events past fifteen-ish.”
Billy did quick math in his head.
“So, what do you think you’ll do with June when she retires?”
Steve looked out past June over to Loretta when she was trotting about the paddock.
“I always kinda had this dream. Like when I get tired of all this, of opening a ranch for old rodeo horses. Ones that are too old or sick to do events. I would take care of them and give them good food and exercise and stuff so they could have a happy retirement. Some rodeo horses are sold to people for, like, personal riding use, but they’re event trained, and usually aren’t great for, like, leisure riding, and people get mad. So, yeah. Retirement village for horses.” He buried his face into June’s neck, and Billy could see the tips of his ears were flaming in embarrassment.
“I think that’s sweet.” He really did. “Hell, you said a well taken care of horse can live for twenty years past retirement, might as well treat ‘em right.”
Steve pulled his face out of June’s neck and beamed at Billy.
Billy’s hand trembled slightly and stuttered over Patsy’s neck.
“I take each girl out for some exercise every day, you wanna help me? We can just walk ‘em.” He looked so hopeful, like all he really wanted was for Billy to hang out with his horses for the rest of the day.
And lucky for him, Billy had already called out of work for the evening, and didn’t tell his dad about it.
“Let’s do it.”
Billy stood back as Steve got June ready, smoothly slipping a halter over her face, attaching a soft rope lead to the ring on the left side of her nose.
He opened the paddock, raising one hand towards Patsy to keep her where she stood while he gently led June out, wrapping the rope lead once around his hand and holding it tightly.
Billy walked next to Steve, June on Steve’s other side as they began making their way to the edge of the fairgrounds, passing the large spread of campers and R.V.s.
The fairground was out in the boonies, outside of the San Diego city limits, and there was a significant amount of sprawling flatlands and hills, covered in emerald grass.
June trotted happily along, tossing her head and bumping into Steve’s shoulder, making him giggle and throw Billy gleeful looks at her behavior.
“Tell me something,” Steve said as they began moving downhill, guiding June on a long walk around the area.
“Like what?”
“I don’t know. Something about you. Something I don’t know.”
Billy cast around in his brain.
There’s a lot Steve didn’t know about him.
And for good reason, too.
He didn’t want Steve to know about that shit.
About the way his father hates him for no other reason than who he is.
The way his mother only calls him twice a year and posts on Facebook every other day about her new husband and their twin toddlers and their perfect life in Oregon.
“When I was, like, eight or nine, I watched Almost Famous, and I just fucking loved everything about it. It made me wanna be in a band so bad. I mean, they’re like a family, all going on tour. It’s so idyllic to me. That’s, like, my retirement horse dream. Make it in a band. We don’t gotta be that famous, or anything, just, like, make it .”
Steve gave him one of those soft smiles of his, and slipped his hand so naturally into Billy’s.
“I’ve never seen that movie.”
Billy gasped dramatically, swinging their hands between them.
“Oh, Stevie, we gotta see it. I don’t even care, I’m gonna make you fuckin’ love it. You’re just like Penny Lane, actually. Kind of a wanderer. Free spirit.”
Steve’s eyes were bright, and they looked gold in the late afternoon sun.
“Is that your favorite movie? Almost Famous ?”
“Yeah. Probably.” It definitely was, but he could let himself geek out over it later. He’s resolved to make Steve watch it with him, and he could be a little lame nerd kid over it then. “What’s your favorite movie? And if you say Black Beauty, I’m running away from you.”
Steve looked at him sheepishly.
“It’s not Black Beauty, but, I mean, it’s Spirit.”
“That animated one?” Billy thinks he’s seen it once or twice when he was a kid. He remembers his dad calling it propaganda.
“Yeah. I mean, I just thought it was really beautifully done. It’s kinda hypocritical, since it’s about, like, freedom and stuff, and a rodeo is totally the opposite of that, but. I don’t know. I just like it.”
“We’ll watch that one, too, then. Favorite movie double feature.”
“I would like that,” Steve said softly, taking his gaze from Billy back over to June. Steve never made much eye contact, and constantly dragged his sight somewhere else when he was embarrassed.
“Maybe I could come to your place. Hang out with you.”
Billy’s whole body went cold.
It was like the temperature had dropped forty degrees, freezing and shattering the perfect warm bubble around them. Like the soft winds stopped making the grass and sparse trees whisper in its wake. Like Billy was trapped in a freezing block of his own panic.
“No.”
Steve stopped in his tracks, and Billy clutched his hand to stop him from slipping it out of his grip.
“Sorry, I, that was really rude.” He stared at June’s front left hoof. “My dad. He doesn’t like. He hates that I. He’s a homophobe. If I-if he even thought that you, that we were, he would-”
“Hey, Bill, it’s okay. I’m, I understand.” Steve pulled their hands up to press them against his chest, brushing his thumb over Billy’s hand. “You don’t have to explain, if you don’t want. I’m sorry for suggesting it.”
“You didn’t know,” Billy said gruffly.
“And I’m not upset. Promise.”
Billy chanced a look up at Steve’s face.
He was giving him a tiny smile, his chin tilted slightly down to give Billy the most sincere look he could possibly manage with those big earnest horse eyes of his.
Billy leaned forward, pressing the softest of little kisses to that tiny smile. It was the only way he could think to let Steve know he was alright. No hard feelings.
They kept walking June mostly in silence, bringing her on a big loop of the lush field.
“My dad doesn’t really like that I’m bi,” Steve spoke unprompted, but it was clear he meant it as a response to their last conversation. “He told me when I came out to him that I’m just young and trying to be rebellious and acting out sexually and I’ll settle down with a nice girl once I’ve gotten it out of my system. I got so mad. I was fourteen. I once heard him and my mom talking about therapy. Like, you know. Therapy .”
Conversion therapy.
Fuck.
“Did they ever go through with it?”
“Nah. My mom told him that was fucked up and that whatever’s going on with me will work itself out. Now we just don’t talk about it.”
“She kinda had your back, that’s pretty cool.”
Billy told his mom he liked guys about two months before she left. She just told him not to tell his dad.
“Yeah. Ignoring it is better than the alternative, I guess.”
Billy chewed on the inside of his cheek.
They were still holding hands, despite their palms getting sweaty from being pressed together in this heat.
It was kinda gross.
Billy never wanted to let go.
“I never even told my dad. He’s so clear about his feelings about. Stuff like that. He’s ex-military, and all that comes with it. Super conservative. Religious conservative, even. So he’s pretty much against everything.”
“So, that’s why you wanna move out so soon? Not to pry, or whatever.”
“Yeah. It sucks having to hide fundamental pieces of who you are from your family. The people that are supposed to love you, but instead tell you to change your shirt before you leave the house because you look like a queer.”
He left out the parts about the backhand slap and the much more aggressive wording that actually spelled out that interaction a few days ago.
Billy had left his house feeling all kindsa cut up and pissed off and fucked Steve as hard as he could on the small table in the airstream, making the whole trailer shake and creak, just barely covering the sounds of Steve’s moans and cries.
It was a good way to work out all that rage.
There was something nice about stickin’ it to his dad by stickin’ it in Steve.
They began the climb up the slight hill back to the paddock.
“I’m sorry, Bill. I know I don’t get it, but I’m just. I’m sorry.”
“Me too.”
He wasn’t sorry for his father’s behavior.
He was sorry for how his father has shaped him.
How sometimes he was selfish and angry and closed-off.
How he could get mean and snarl and attack before asking questions.
But most of all, he was sorry that he was scared.
Too scared to follow Steve to the ends of the Earth, like he was absolutely fuckin’ dying to. To live in these perfect few weeks together forever.
Too scared to let go of their time together. So terrified that when their moments are finished, he’ll miss this happiness and peace so much he’ll wither into nothing.
So terrified that this is the last time he’ll ever feel like this. Feel like there’s something good and worthwhile and beautiful inside of him.
So terrified that the rage will eat away at that beautiful thing until there’s nothing left.
Steve pulled his hands out of Billy’s when they reached the paddock, and he gave Billy a gentle smile, his eyes catching the sun in a way that made every warm summer afternoon wiggle its way into Billy’s heart. The cascade of fearful thoughts stopped in Billy’s brain, and he let himself watch as Steve pet June softly, removing her halter when she was safely in the paddock once again.
Steve placed a different one on Loretta, bringing her out of the paddock next.
Loretta kept them walking a little faster, kicking her hooves up and making Billy laugh in the way she seemed to prance through the grass.
She took off in a gallop, Steve jogging along next to her, the lead wrapped once around his hand again, and Billy could hear his laughter on the summer air.
Loretta was full of energy, whinnying and braying all the time as she and Steve looped around the soft grasses.
Billy cut up the hill, moving closer towards the fairgrounds and taking a seat on the ground. He crossed his legs in front of him, leaning to rest his elbows on his thighs, propping his chin up with his hand.
The grass was impossibly soft underneath him, and Steve was smiling so wide, pretending to swing dance with Loretta, using the lead as if it was the arm of his partner, spinning himself underneath it.
There was a fat bumblebee buzzing around near Billy’s knee, landing on the tiny wildflowers sprinkled in the grass, wiggling itself in the pollen.
It was fucking.
Idyllic.
Like something from one a’ those horse girl movies Steve no doubt loved more than anything.
The sun was moving slowly through the sky.
He could just barely hear the announcer’s voice, echoing from the speakers in the event arena.
And he wished, for some time, that this was his life. Traveling with Steve. Spending warm summer days sitting in the grass while Steve exercised his beloved horses. Nothing weighing on him but what they should do for dinner that night. Whether or not Max and her little rodeo friend Elle needed some extra cash for food.
He let himself flop back in the grass, spreading his arms and legs out and watching the clouds roll by, sparse as they were.
He hates to say it. He really does. But this is the happiest he thinks he’s ever been.
Which is just. Sad. And dangerous. And not what he needs in this time-stamped little fling with someone he barely knows, despite how much he feels like their souls may be connected, or other shit the old poetry books stashed under his bed might wax and wane about.
He tried to memorize everything about this moment. How Steve squinted in the bright light, the corners of his eyes crinkling just like they did when he smiled. The way the sun warmed his skin, almost as much as Steve’s touch warmed him up.
Everything about these two weeks has been so perfect, it’s genuinely heartbreaking.
All Billy wants is to cling onto Steve, and cling onto the month for-fucking-ever.
He barely noticed the sound of hooves approaching him, and he grinned at Steve when he dropped to his knees next to Billy’s chest, his face tinged red, his brow slightly sweaty.
Loretta leaned her head down to sniff at Billy’s forehead, and Billy made Steve laugh when he went cross-eyed to watch her dark nose twitch.
His laugh made something inside Billy keel over and die.
Time is ticking down on how long he’ll get to hear that perfect sound. That lovely music of Steve’s happiness.
“You ready for Patsy?”
Loretta bumped Billy once on the head and moved to graze some of the grass next to Steve’s hip.
“Yeah,” he said.
He meant I’ll miss this too much when it’s gone.

Anyone want to share their best tips and tricks for getting a horse to gain weight? Right now Amba is going to get a stall through at least October so people can keep an eye on her with all her medical things going on (she still gets daytime turnout), but I’d eventually like her to go back to pasture board, but not unless her weight goes back up before winter.
Her current diet is 2 quarts of LS Sentinel horse feed, which is low in starch and high in fat. She also gets an additional half a quart of alfalfa pellets, and is on a hoof supplement, and the Triple Crown essential omega supplement for weight gain. She gets all this twice a day. She also gets ulcergard once a day and sucralfate twice day. For whatever reason her ulcers do not seem to be getting much better; she was getting 3 qts of feed twice a day but she could no longer handle it due to acid reflux.
In turnout she has has access to lots of grass and a small amount of hay. When she is in her stall she gets more hay, and this hay is second cut. It’s a mix of grasses grown at the farm; I think I was told it’s mostly timothy but I need to double check.
Then whenever I come to the barn (3-4 times a week) I give her soaked alfalfa cubes.
I would consider her current workload to be pretty light. Between me and Brian she gets ridden 4 times a week. No jumping yet and only a little cantering in the ring. At least one of these rides is just a trail/hack for an hour; it’s very rare that I have the time to ride her for longer than that. And currently she’s getting a week and half off so she can recover from her fever.
Part of the reason for stalling her is not just to keep a closer eye on her but also to have her slightly bored with nothing better to do than eat the hay in front of her at night and in the early morning. When I go to get her in the pasture a lot of times she is just staring at the other horses and not actually grazing.
She is growing in a winter coat so she should not be losing any calories due to the cold.
Unfortunately 3 feedings a day is not an option at this facility. I would say her body condition is probably a 4 right now.

Hi back on my bullshit once again, you followed me and now you have to deal with me
In talking to a Chi breeder while conducting my research, we got on the topic of hypoglycemia and what steps they take to avoid it. While I spoke briefly about the topic in this post, the breeder also gave me some tips that I wouldn’t have otherwise known. Remember that while I’ve always liked the various terriers of the world, I’ve never personally owned one. My grandfather’s JRTs never needed anything like this, nor did my sister’s (admittedly large at 12lbs) chihuahua, nor did any of the small dogs owned by various roommates prior to this.
I had always sort of rolled my eyes when warned about the risk, thinking that the problem would be easily mitigated if only the owner was feeding a proper high protein diet to make up for the higher metabolism and not feeding their dog so much junk... until a client dog of mine was given plenty of sugary, fruit-based, carb-heavy treats during class and sugared out at home. He was thankfully okay- after his owner spent several thousand dollars at the emergency vet to figure out why his dog had a seizure and then went completely unresponsive (that dog also later developed diabetes according to an update sent to me from his owner, could have been related considering he was a “teacup”) but that was the first time I saw an otherwise-healthy tiny dog go through a sugar crash. When I got Tiki, one of the first things we did was swing by my store to grab some Nutri-Cal, so I could pull her back from that abyss if need be.
We chatted a bit about that, and then the breeder said something I’d never even thought of. They said they don’t ever wean the puppies onto mush or canned food, because they find that both of those are fairly sugary and are more likely to make one of their young weanlings crash. They wean directly to kibble supplemented with fresh eggs and veggies from their garden and chickens, and at the pup’s own pace. This creates puppies that are not picky, that are hungry for their food, and that have significantly less chance of sugaring out. They do keep sugary syrup on hand just in case, but since starting to do things that way they’ve noticed they don’t have to worry about it as much. They try to keep treats as meaty and low-sugar (and low-starch) as possible, and their chews are generally things like horns and hooves rather than kongs filled with (sugary!!) peanut butter.
While I do have some leftover cans and (frozen) freshpet that I plan to stuff into kongs, this makes sense to me. I’m a big fan of lower carb, higher protein foods anyway as a carnivore’s diet is going to emulate that- regardless of grain in or grain free (and this breeder feeds grain in) a carnivore’s stomach is adapted to eating more meat-based proteins than anything plant based. Even the taurine-deficient DCM is causing an issue because of a lack of digestible taurine, an essential nutrient found in red meat, not carbs and starches and sugars. Regardless of what form of food I feed, I always choose meat-heavy foods with as minimal starches as possible (unless feeding raw, certain canned foods, or certain dehydrated foods, zero starch and carbs is impossible because meat powders in the processing and so something must be added to create a “solid” appearance) (this is where you see the prevalence of grain-free foods having absurd amounts of peas, legumes, lentils, and potato come into play- cheap ways to artificially boost the protein percentages and an added bonus to use it as a starch) (also why I have always sought foods with low starch percentages, as these have been known problem ingredients well before the DCM crisis hit)
This is interesting to note for me, because I genuinely had not been sure what “the best” thing to feed Tiki would have been. She ate kibble, canned food, freshpet, the various fresh foods from various companies, and never really seemed to have any complaints about any of them. Towards the end she was canned only as she wouldn’t eat anything else, but how much of that was due to the fact that she was literally dying rather than anything to do with her personal preference? And I would have never connected the dots, though it definitely makes sense as quite a few canned foods are quite heavy on the carbs and starches (so are some kibbles, though not the particular kibble this breeder feeds).
It also, idk, just sort of made me happy to know that these folks treat their dogs like... dogs. They’re definitely more of the dress up the tiny dog and tiny dogs belong on laps and carry my tiny dog around everywhere with me type of people on the surface that I would initially be comfortable with, but in actually speaking to them it was nice to hear them say how they hate the stereotype of picky little dogs and won’t feed into that, they give their dogs chews and toys, they temperament test and are constantly out training and competing (when covid’s not happening), their more drivey higher energy dogs they go out and compete in performance sports even if they just do fun-runs and don’t actually title just to do stuff with them. The amount of people who come into my job who, when I suggest something correctly sized for their tiny breed, say “oh my dog is a chihuahua they can’t do that” makes me nuts, even more so now, because I spoke to someone with more than a decade of experience breeding chis and their dogs chew bones and play fetch and compete just like any other breed out there.
Just, something about the “oh we don’t do sugary snacks just in case with hypoglycemia, so we give the dogs hooves instead” made me so happy to hear strictly because so many people at my job won’t even consider buying a chew for their tiny dogs. I have to argue with people that greenies and fresh kisses are not going to break their little dogs’ mouths if they chew on them unless that dog has a pre-existing dental issue, meanwhile this hoard of chihuahuas gets a whole hoof each to gnaw at when they’re being terrible monsters.

Misguided Justice - Pt. I
[[ Co-written with @kidcatgemini / @sinafay-the-defiant ]]
Evening had descended by the time Argonas set hoof on the small Arathi farmstead. Quaint and simple, the Vindicator could barely believe this is where his wayward student Sinafay had settled down. No measure of justice was served from such a simple life. But then, he knew she’d abandoned such duties in favor of her abhorrent and deviant lifestyle. His fists clenched as he paced up the hill from the fields proper, towards the small cottage overlooking the land. Smoke billowing from the chimney served as a sure sign someone was home. Sinafay… Grakkar… that abomination they called a child… he expected to find all three inside. Disgusting and unnatural as it was, that wasn’t even why Argonas was here. No, Sinafay’s transgressions far exceeded that, now.
Despite Raetos’ unwillingness to do what was necessary, and his efforts to convince the Vindicator of such, Argonas knew otherwise. Anyone who abided such evils as Avehi raising the dead were just as culpable as she was! By harboring and abetting the Death Knight, Sinafay had made her choice. And the Light demanded its justice. It almost hurt to consider; he really had taken pride in training young Sinafay in the ways of the Light, helping to nurture and cultivate her talents into a beacon of strength for their people. Such a waste…
His heavy hand banged against the wooden door - so fragile, he worried it might break if he hit it too hard. Still, the firm knocks echoed through the farmstead, as the Vindicator made his presence known.
“Sinafay!” he called out. “Sinafay the Defiant!”
It didn’t take very long for the door to open, revealing a very angry looking Draenei, brows knit into a scowl. She’d done a great job at losing the baby weight, already a good way back to her Vindicator fitness level. She wore a lovely, yet simple robe, ideal for a busy mother, yet accentuated her natural curves and showed off her Light bound tattoos.
“Argonas,” she scolded, “Do you mind maybe NOT waking the baby I just put to sleep?!”
She pushed forward to try and shove the Vindicator back, but Argonas was unmovable as always, and in his full armor of course! With a frustrated huff, she moved around him, shutting the door behind her as she began to walk down the hill, tail twitching. Best to do the yelling away from Neelah. She couldn’t imagine what her former mentor was doing here at this time of night.
“What the FUCK are you doing here?!” She growled.
Perhaps it was motherhood, the hormones raging through her. Or perhaps coupling with a filthy Orc for too long had boosted her aggression. Maybe, partly, she was upset to see him again after how he left things with her. There were many likely factors, but no matter what or why, Sinafay was being terribly bitchy. It wasn't the attractive sour attitude he cherished in his departed mate, either; she was just being erratic and grumpy. Terribly unappealing!
He followed her a ways down the hill, stern expression his only real response to her demeanor. He looked her over, a mixture of sorrow and regret overcoming him. Oh how far she'd fallen… even glistening with the Light from her Lightforging did little to make her seem redeemable after such a terrible track her life had followed. It pained him to see his former pupil like this. Such shame he felt, clearly having failed to teach her not to parlay with savage orcs, or aide depraved Death Knights. She was his greatest failure.
"... I am told you sheltered and aided Avehi. Is this true?" Argonas asked, bluntly.
Sinafay raised a brow, turning to look at him as the question was asked. She relaxed a bit, having shaken off the anger now that they were a fair distance away from the house.
“She was here a few months ago; came across the farm by happenstance. Hadn’t seen each other for a while, so we caught up. Went on her way after that.”
Sinafay crosses her arms over her chest. Why was Argonas looking for Avehi? She thought back on her conversation with the Death Knight, frowning. She finally took a moment to look the Vindicator over; those dark circles under his eyes… and something looked off in that luminous gaze of his. Something she’d missed in her earlier frustration.
“If that’s what you mean by ‘sheltered and aided’, then yeah, I guess I did. Why?”
“She has dragged you into her terrible misdeeds.” Argonas elaborated, albeit vaguely. “Avehi has been raising the dead for nefarious purposes. If you are a friend to her, she will likely come here to seek shelter again. To hide from the Light’s justice.”
His eyes narrowed, as he reached back to draw his crystalline blade.
“This, I cannot allow.”
Sinafay didn’t wait a moment longer to see where the conversation was leading. She’d seen this exact situation play out too many times, on Draenor, to those suspected of aiding the Mag’har under Yrel’s reign.
She wasn’t about to allow him to use that blade. While she’d taken on a more domestic role over the past months, she’d kept her senses sharp. Having an Orc mate who enjoyed a good spar helped quite a bit.
Her eyes flared, hands slamming into the large Vindicator’s chest with a powerful blast of Holy Light to push him back before taking on a defensive position.
“I suppose I was right to not have trusted you after all.”
It hurt to have her suspicions realized. To know that her mentor was as blinded as the people she’d left behind on her world. She felt justified, in a way, the guilt of hiding her relationship with Grakkar from him washing away.
“Leave us be, Argonas,” she warned, baring her teeth, “This is your only warning.”
The Vindicator’s hooves scraped along the ground, slowing him from skidding too far back. He grunted, frowning deeper at Sinafay. He expected resistance, of course. He’d trained her well enough not to take a death threat lying down!
“Do you think I want to do this? I thought I had taught you better! But you have fallen so far from the path I laid out for you!” he growled, plated fist tightening around the hilt of his blade. “You failed! You abandoned your post! You betrayed our kin on Draenor, breaking your vow to protect them! And for an Orc!?”
“Hmph. Consider it my highest honor.” Sinafay shot back, defiantly.
Argonas grunted. He rushed in, hoofsteps hastened by the Light itself in a furious charge. He swung his sword in a wide arc towards Sinafay. Sinafay shot forward as he charged. She didn’t have a weapon or armor, but knew agility wasn’t Argonas’ strong suit, and planned to use that to her advantage. She rolled as he swung, just passed his right leg to end up behind him, her tail wrapped around his ankle, tugging it back with her momentum as she got to her hooves.
She didn’t turn back to look if he’d fallen forward or not as she kept running; hoping she’d bought herself a bit of time as she headed towards Grakkar’s workshop. She knew there would be a weapon or something there she could use to defend herself with. The Lightbound could hear nothing but her rapid heartbeat as adrenaline rushed through her system, making it impossible to know if he was right behind her or not.
Suddenly, a bolt of Light struck her shoulder, knocking her off balance just as she reached the workshop. She stumbled and fell into the door, crashing through it! The heavy hoofbeats of Argonas closed in, making up what distance the tripping attack bought had cost him.
“And now, you abide by such abhorrence as Avehi raising the dead! Our own people, enthralled by her necrotic powers!” he continued to charge Sinafay, shouting aggressively. “I know not what set you on such a depraved path after we parted, Sina. But it has led to this final judgment! The Light will not tolerate your abusing its blessing to supplement death and pain to its chosen people!”
He brought his blade up for an overhead swing, cutting straight down vertically!
Sinafay barely had time to cocoon herself within a barrier of Light. Argonas’ sword crashed into it, causing sparks to fly and crackle in a near blinding light show as the holy forces fought against each other. The Lightbound woman grit her teeth as the barrier cracked under the pressure of the Vindicator’s strength. She was out of practice, and her former mentor’s conviction was too strong. She knew she was only delaying the inevitable, but she would fight to the bitter end.
And that end grew closer as the barrier shattered. She tried to roll to the side but the blade found purchase in her side, forcing a cry out of her as blue blood oozed out of the wound. She reached out, hands grabbing the Vindicator’s wrists as her hooves kicked out at his face in a final act of defiance.
Argonas stumbled back, but not far. Swift and firm as the kick was, there was an insurmountable difference in stature between the two Vindicators. His face immediately began to swell up at the impact point of Sinafay’s hoof, but that only seemed to infuriate him more. The grinding of his plate gauntlet along the hilt of his crystalline blade rang out sharply as he shifted his grip. He took the sword in his hands, and lined up the piercing point with his former pupil’s chest.
“Through me, the Light’s justice will be served! The mistakes I made in judging the true measures of your character will at long last be corrected!”
He raised his blade, eyes narrowing as he started to bring it down to finish his grim task-- when suddenly a pair of arms wrapped tensely around his waist! From behind him, Grakkar took hold of the Vindicator and heaved him upward and over himself with a mighty roar! The Draenei was caught off-guard, and thrown over onto his back as Grakkar arched and kicked back and away from Sinafay. Argonas came crashing down on his shoulders and the back of his head, driving his chin into his chest plate as the rest of his heavy plated body rolled over the top of him! He was stunned! The wind knocked from him entirely as Grakkar threw him back!
“Get away from my mate, you honorless piece of clefthoof shit!” the Warsong shouted, snarling at Argonas.
He gave little time for the abettor to recover, rushing in to keep up the pressure. As Argonas rolled over and brought himself up to his hands and knees, Grakkar ran up and took hold of his head. Lining it up, he carried his momentum and slammed his knee into the Draenei’s crest!
*CRACK*
Argonas rolled over from both the pain, and the force of the impact to his face! But the assault didn’t end there. Grakkar trudged up alongside the writhing and bewildered Draenei. He knelt down scooping up a small handful of dirt to toss into the Vindicator’s face! Then, he just started punching! Once, again, three times! He bloodied his fist against the Draenei’s plated crest, pounding his face over and over with unyielding fury!
Argonas did what he could to protect himself, but he couldn’t see his assaulter, much less block the barrage of punches! He’d dropped his sword, and couldn’t afford to reach out and feel for it nearby. That would only give the Orc more openings! Instead, he curled in, doing his best to cover his face with one arm as he swatted at Grakkar blindly with the other in hopes of deflecting or softening the next blow coming his way. One wild swipe caught hold of something - the Orc’s forearm. Success! With all his might, he ripped the Orc’s arm towards him, counter attacking with a punch of his own. He felt his plated fist connect, knocking the Orc back and away from him. Only for a moment… but the moment was all he needed.
Bringing his hooves back beneath him, Argonas stood up and quickly brushed the dirt and blood from his face. His luminous eyes set onto Grakkar, who also recuperated from their exchange of blows. For a moment, the two stared one another down.
“The Light… judges you too, Orc filth!” Argonas grunted.
“Fuck your Light!” Grakkar shot back, snarling.
With a furious shout, the Orc rushed at Argonas yet again. The Draenei took up a defensive stance, readying himself as Grakkar drew near. He knew he couldn’t match the Orc’s agility; their fight in Kun-Lai had taught him that, well enough. Instead he dug in his hooves, tail swaying limber behind him to keep his balance. As the Orc took his swing, Argonas brought his forearms up to block the incoming blow. Then the next. Teeth grit as he held firm his position, Argonas bided the Orc’s assault like a statue! He was ready for him, this time. Ready and waiting for his opening. His hands and arms felt raw, jarred and pulsing from the plate gauntlets reverberating each repeated strike. But he held his ground.
Grakkar raged on, throwing punch after punch in the hopes of landing one or two good blows, enough to throw his opponent off of the defensive. But the Vindicator was stoic! Unyielding! The old Orc already felt fatigue setting in. How long had it been since he had a good fight like this? Since settling down with Sinafay, and their young daughter Neelah, he hadn’t been in too many scrapes. His rustiness was taxing him now, exacting the toll of his inactivity. His blows began to slow, punches falling slower and softer against the same blood-smeared plate gloves the Draenei used to defend himself. His knuckles were pulp, each screaming a searing pain from crashing into the inexorable metal again and again. He rotated in a kick to mix it up, hoping to knock the Draenei over, but he might as well have kicked a boulder. One more punch. Another. Until finally the futility of it drained Grakkar entirely. He staggered back, growling.
And that was Argonas’ opening.
The blast of Light illuminated the farmstead, bright as high noon for only a split second. Argonas’ retributive burst was more than enough to knock the weary Orc over. The Vindicator charged, hoofbeats hastened by the Light’s gift to surge the mass of muscle and steel towards Grakkar. He’d barely managed to keep his balance, only for Argonas to slam into him like a rampaging elekk. The Orc felt his body tossed back, and yet he didn’t go far. Argonas gripped him tightly to keep him from sailing too far away from the impact, instead simply slamming him into the ground before him. The Orc’s pained howl was a symphony to the Vindicator. Retribution for so much pain that not only this Orc caused him personally, but all Orcs caused his people! Quickly, he followed up by stomping his hoof into the vile creature’s chest! Still surging with the Light, his plated hoof shoe seared into Grakkar’s flesh, causing him to writhe and moan in pain!
“You have caused enough trouble!” Argonas declared, pressing his hoof down harder. “And now, you will cause no more!”
Grakkar struggled, gripping the Draenei’s leg as he gave all his might to try and push back, but not only did the Draenei significantly outmatch his strength, his plated form weighed a ton! It took all the Orc’s might just to keep the hoof at bay! Even then, he felt his ribs bending and cracking, the hoof melting his skin. It became hard to breath, his cries of agony turning to harsh and hoarse gasps as Argonas pressed harder. He’d been in enough fights to know when he’d lost. And this… this was it. This was the end.
His eyes widened at the realization, his expression of anger and rage replaced by one of fear. Despair. He had failed. He couldn’t protect his mate. His daughter. After everything he’d done, all the effort and sacrifice he’d made to protect Sinafay, to free her from bondage on Draenor… only for her to die here at the hands of another Light-crazed zealot. He strained a little harder, but nothing he could do would be enough to overpower Argonas. But he couldn’t give up. He wouldn’t! He turned his head, looking over towards the workshop where Sinafay was. He couldn’t see her… and that hurt all the more, unable to lay eyes on his mate one final time. His strength began to wane.
“I’m… sorry…” Grakkar grunted, as his grip finally slipped.
