Best Aquarium Filter
Best Aquarium Filter: Enhancing Your Marine Life's Health and Beauty
Ensuring Clean Water for Your Aquatic Friends
Having a thriving aquarium with vibrant marine life requires more than just setting up a tank and adding water. One of the most crucial components for maintaining a healthy aquatic environment is the choice of the best aquarium filter. A high-quality aquarium filter not only keeps the water clean but also ensures the well-being and longevity of your underwater companions.
The Role of Aquarium Filters
Aquarium filters play a pivotal role in maintaining a clean and healthy aquatic environment. They remove impurities, toxins, and debris from the water, imitating the natural filtration processes that occur in oceans and rivers. By keeping the water quality optimal, aquarium filters create a comfortable and thriving habitat for your marine creatures.
Types of Aquarium Filters HOB Filters (Hang-On-Back Filters)
HOB filters are popular among beginners due to their simple installation and maintenance. They hang on the back of the aquarium, drawing water through a mechanical filter to trap debris and particles.
Canister Filters
Canister filters offer superior filtration for larger tanks. They operate by forcing water through various filter media, providing efficient mechanical, chemical, and biological filtration.
Sponge Filters
Sponge filters are gentle and ideal for tanks with fry or small, delicate species. They function through air-driven circulation, promoting biological filtration by cultivating beneficial bacteria.
Undergravel Filters
These filters are placed beneath the substrate, using uplift tubes to create water flow. While they offer biological filtration, they may require regular maintenance to prevent clogging.
Biological Filters
Biological filters are essential for establishing a healthy nitrogen cycle. They consist of porous materials where beneficial bacteria thrive, converting toxic ammonia into less harmful substances.
Factors to Consider When Choosing an Aquarium Filter
Tank Size and Volume
The filter's capacity should match the tank's volume to ensure effective filtration. An undersized filter can lead to poor water quality and stressed marine life.
Filtration Mechanisms
Consider a filter that offers mechanical, chemical, and biological filtration for comprehensive water purification. Each mechanism targets different impurities, ensuring a well-balanced ecosystem.
Maintenance and Ease of Use
Regular maintenance is vital for filter longevity. Opt for a filter with accessible parts, easy-to-change media, and clear instructions for hassle-free upkeep.
The Importance of Filtration in Marine Life Health
Nitrogen Cycle and Water Purification
Aquarium filters play a key role in the nitrogen cycle, which converts ammonia to nitrite and then to nitrate. This cycle helps maintain safe ammonia levels, preventing harm to your marine inhabitants.
Removal of Debris and Toxins
Filters remove uneaten food, waste, and other debris that can deteriorate water quality. They also eliminate harmful chemicals, such as excess nitrate and phosphate.
Setting Up Your Aquarium Filter
Installation Steps
1. Rinse the filter media to remove excess dust.
2. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for assembly.
3. Place the filter in the designated spot on your aquarium.
Proper Placement
Position the filter where water flow is evenly distributed throughout the tank. Avoid strong currents that may stress your marine life.
Regular Maintenance of Your Aquarium Filter
Cleaning Schedule
Create a cleaning routine that includes rinsing mechanical media and replacing chemical media as needed. Regularly check for clogs and signs of wear.
Replacing Filter Media
Change filter media gradually to avoid disrupting the nitrogen cycle. Monitor water parameters after media changes to ensure stability.
Troubleshooting Common Filter Issues
Low Flow Rate
Low flow may indicate a clog in the filter media. Clean or replace the media to restore proper water circulation.
Noisy Operation
A noisy filter could result from air trapped in the system. Ensure all connections are secure and the filter is properly primed.
Leakage Problems
Inspect O-rings and seals for damage. Lubricate them with aquarium-safe silicone if necessary.
Enhancing Filtration with Additional Strategies
Live Plants as Natural Filters
Live aquatic plants absorb nutrients that contribute to algae growth, providing a natural form of filtration.
Beneficial Bacteria Boosters
Supplement your filter with beneficial bacteria products to boost biological filtration and maintain water clarity.
Advanced Filtration Techniques for Large Aquariums
Protein Skimmers
Protein skimmers remove organic compounds that contribute to water cloudiness. They are particularly beneficial for saltwater aquariums.
Fluidized Bed Filters
These filters fluidize fine sand or another media to create a breeding ground for beneficial bacteria, enhancing biological filtration.
Conclusion: Investing in the Well-Being of Your Marine Life
Choosing the best aquarium filter is a crucial investment in the health and vibrancy of your marine habitat. Proper filtration ensures clear water, a balanced ecosystem, and happy aquatic inhabitants. By considering factors such as tank size, filtration mechanisms, and maintenance needs, you can create a thriving underwater world for your marine companions.
FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)
Q: How often should I clean my aquarium filter?
A: It's recommended to clean the filter media as part of your regular maintenance routine, which is typically every 2-4 weeks.
Q: Can I use multiple types of filters in one aquarium?
A: Yes, combining different filter types can provide enhanced filtration. Just ensure they complement each other without causing excessive water flow.
Q: Do I need a filter for a small aquarium with few fish?
A: Yes, even small aquariums benefit from filtration to maintain water quality and prevent waste buildup.
Q: Are UV sterilizers a replacement for filters?
A: No, UV sterilizers primarily target microorganisms. They can be used alongside filters for comprehensive water treatment.
Q: How do I know if my filter is the right size for my tank?
A: Refer to the manufacturer's guidelines, which often provide recommendations based on tank volume and inhabitants.

So my AquaClear 50 (a "hang-on-back" aquarium filter rated for 20-50 gallon tanks) kicked the bucket at a very convenient 11pm last night after I gave it a cleaning upon returning from my 3 week holiday travels. Specifically, the impeller shaft decided that it didn't like being properly attached to the motor, actually, and in fact preferred to whirl around and make horrific grinding noises of the sort you typically hear before something mechanical outright explodes.
I, high off of three separate fairly-to-highly profitable zines deciding that it was time to pay out enough money in the last week of December that I actually have to file taxes in 2024 now, immediately took it as a sign to blow all of that money on a canister filter.
Behold, my new Fluval 207!
Tumblr media
Pictured: My Fluval 207, along with several items that you'd think wouldn't be located on an aquarium tool table, including sewing thread, a toothbrush, and a hacksaw. My friends pooled together to get me that exorbitantly expensive ADA toolstand for my last birthday and I love it from the bottom of my heart.
I can't wait to move for residency and get an actual aquarium stand that will hide the filter and the CO2 tank underneath it. For now, I simply celebrate the quieter, less objectionable hum (you'll notice it I distinctly did not use the term "ungodly rattle") of the canister filter.
Unfortunately, the tubing and inlet/outlet pipes it comes with are ugly as sin, so that'll be another month of saving up for actual lily pipes. For now, however, the shrimp are enjoying the sponge I put over the inflow tract, which is nice, because it is exclusively there to stop them from killing themselves via the intake pipe. Not that I don't expect to find several baby shrimp in the canister itself whenever I clean it next month.
Tumblr media
Pictured: Ugly as sin, and also the deceptively poorly-lit sponge, upon which sits one shrimp you can see and four that you cannot, including the male amano. Apparently they are camera-shy.
All in all, a nice improvement from the poor 10-gallon filter that was keeping everyone nice and alive overnight. That thing was still quieter, though.

you know how cigarettes and liquor don't actually cost that much money to make, the government just puts absurdly high taxes on them to discourage people from buying too much. we need to do that for betta fish

One of the features is an LED filter cartridge change indication light, which indicates when it needs to be replaced by flashing when the cartridge gets blocked with debris. The internal pump design of the Aqueon QuietFlow filters is a terrific feature. It reduces noise, stops leaks, and, because it is self-priming, activates automatically after cleaning or power outages. For healthier, more energetic fish, greater flow rates also guarantee a higher dissolved oxygen level.

soft thoughts u say hmmm
the first thing that came to my mind was leehan <\3 but imagine you’re like at his place/dorm/aquarium whatever and me softly tells you about his fish/the fish in the tanks :( and maybe mayyyybe your attention shifts to his pretty face instead of the fish and he gets so so shy:(
and imagine he says something like "i used to have a fav fish but now it’s you, you’re the only fish for me in this ocean” OTS SO CHEESY BUT I CRODE AND DIEDED
omg leehan fish soft thoughts I LOVE THIS AXE LIKE IVE BEEN WATCHING MORE BONEDO CONTENT AND THE WAY HE LITERALLY WILL JUST SIT HIMSELF IN FRONT OF HIS LITTLE TANK AND ZONE OUT COMPLETELY CONTENTED MAKES ME CRY </////3
warnings: low-key nothing just a lot of fishes and leehan perfect combo <3
wc: ~600.
a/n: mom i love him
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
he's always excited about then every single day and you find it so so endearing. you love to just sit next to him as he watches the fish tank with pure love in his eyes. it's the best way he can relax, and you love to know that there's something that he will never get tired of.
you keep him company and you're always happy to listen to him explain about all the different fish. he'll explain in detail about the different species and their behaviors. he'll walk you through how he decorated the tank and how hard it was to decide on which species and what algae, sand, rocks, etc to get. he'd even talk about the water filters and maintenance routine because you're one of the only people who will always listen to him and never get bored.
and you really could listen to him talk all day. it's not boring when it's leehan and you live off of the way his eyes light up whenever you ask him a question in response. sometimes it's a bit hard to get his attention when he's in his little world staring at his babies in the water, but you can't even blame him for it because you're the exact same way... except with his face.
it's so hard not to stare at him when he looks so ethereal, especially watching his eyes. they're so shiny and pretty staring at the fish with the utmost love. and you always think about how lucky you are that he extends his love filled gaze to you as well. he looks at you the same way he looks at his fish and it's just something so small but it makes you want to cry with how much you love him.
the first time he caught you staring at him was when he was explaining everything about his favourite fish: the corydoras. usually you would hum or say something in response to keep the conversation active, but you were unusually quiet this time. and when he looked over he caught your gaze completely immersed in him not the fish and immediately he's blushing like crazy. because in his brain he relates that you must find him as mesmerizing as he finds the fish and it just feels so precious and beautiful to him </3
and one you day you brought up the saying that there's lots of fish in the ocean and asked leehan if you were his favourite fish. and he's reluctant to say yes but he's also reluctant to say no. you really put him in such a difficult situation because on one hand he could say no and betray the love of his life or say yes and betray his babies who he has cared so attentively for :( in the end he just can't choose between you and his adored corydoras, so he just compromises by saying that he loves both equally.
you can't argue with the way he is silently pleading for you not be mad at his answer. it was a joking question in the first place; really you just wanted to see his reaction. and it was worth it because he's such an adorable lost baby as soon as he hears that he has to choose between his two favourite things in the world </3
you're really just two idiots in love with each other with such focus on your eyes and how much attention and interest they can hold for one another :(

so...few days ago I've created a hermitcraft mermaid au. and here ya go, some of my thoughts about it and also my drawings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
first of all, cub, grian, zedaph, tango, joehills, xisuma and impulse are humans, when scar, doc, pearl, skizz, cleo are mermaids(I didn't think of other hermits yet)
here's also a bit of lore happening, so let's talk little bit about every hermit.
•xisuma
- he is an owner of this whole circus oceanarium and ocean research center.
- he is a strange guy, once he even stole a bone from rendog to chew on! but nonetheless, he is a hard working man and he does all the managing work better than anyone else possibly could
•scar
- cub and grian were the first to find alive mermaid, which happened to be scar. scar, as the most kind and innocent soul, of course, most of the time spent saving sea creatures from fishing nets, plastic junk and etc, though got a lot of injuries himself. he had been in an accident just before he was caught, so he didn't have a chance to escape due to movement issues, because his tail and fins were badly injured
- scar is an orca! but he won't eat you, don't worry. he might try, though
- most of the time there is only one scientist watching him, and it is cub. even though at first cub was too serious about his job, depicting scar more like an object other than a living creature with thoughts and feelings, it was gone in a little while when two of them had a chance to actually know each other more. you could say, scar softened cub's heart
- he is a silly boy, trying to escape his aquarium probably every day at first, thinking of place as a prison. none of his attempts were successful, to be honest, but he never stopped trying
- also, once he even got in a physical fight with grian, being mad that he was in the team who catched him. who won? for some reason it was grian, who is smaller twice in size and not so good underwater
- grian got in trouble many times because of his experiments and especially testing human food on scar. once he had serious food poisoning because of it, and cub never let grian be alone near scar's aquarium again
- scar once asked for human meat and got a "cubfan live reaction". canniballism is pretty common between mermaids, so he was expecting the same from humans
•doc
- doc is a giant moray eel.
- you could say he is the most intelligent and smart fish you've seen! not just by mermaid standards, but by human too. before the oceanarium he was living in an old warship, where he found a room with books that were not touched by water. that's where from he knows chemistry, physics, engineering and other, that's also where he learned english better, as he is originally from german waters(scientists where really impressed that mermaid could have an accent).
- but this ship happened to be in a military zone, where people one time were testing a bomb and underwater explosion happened. doc nearly made it out alive, though got almost incompatible with life injuries. he couldn't be healed by wrapping wounds with seaweed, so he decided to go to humans to the research center by himself, making a deal: he agreed to be studied for science purposes but got a proper treatment for his injuries in return.
- by that point, he was second one to be "caught"
- he is really smart and he will not be missing an opportunity to squeeze out everything from people working there. he got the best aquarium with the best accessories, rocks, corals and filters. it took almost over a year to figure all of this out and a lot of pressure on workers, but doc is not feeling guilty
- he really likes to eat tomatoes
- he also really likes to get out of his tank and go on an adventure to other mermaids. scar is living nearest to him, so you could often see these two hang out
- he created the word "scitties" and scar likes to use it (especially in situations when he is suggested to wear clothes. he says his scitties are too precious to hide them)
- after some time doc became the first mermaid scientist. his high intelligence just couldn't be ignored
- doc helped to create prosthetic fins and tail for scar
- eventually there was created a special gadget just for doc, so he could easily speak with other scientists even being under the water
- scientist connected to him is grian. they are in good terms and grian totally acknowledges his cleverness. gridoc nation rise up
•ren
- oh sweet, sweet rendog! you just couldn't guess what he is. he is... a dog, simple as that. but a smart one!
- although, he doesn't like meat. he is a vegetarian dog!
- his duty mostly is to deliver food to mermaids. he doesn't like to deliver food to scar as it's mostly chocolate chip cookies and lots of raw meat, and he totally adores to visit doc because of his love for tomatoes
- doc likes to escape, and ren likes doc, so he always goes after him with a mop in his teeth to hide water paddles he is creating
- ren is well-trained and all of the staff knows him, so he has access to almost every room in both oceanarium and research center
- he likes to sleep near doc's aquarium. sometimes doc goes out of water at night, waits for his hand to dry and gently pets him
- oh. and ren also has a very specific addiction. this little fur boy always steals people's sunglasses. why does he do that? why does a dog even need sunglasses? nobody knows. but that is such a common thing, that nobody even cares anymore. yep, there's a dog running around in sunglasses, what is wrong with that?
•here's the fun part. beloved zits!!!
- impulse is the only one true ocean scientist in their group
- zedaph lived most of his life on a farm and knows pretty much everything about farm animals. he is a crazy zoologist and has basically zero idea how to deal with fish
"that's a weird looking chicken", - he says, looking at any mermaid
- tango is an engineer and a drummer in his own band. he slays and also he has a lot of tattoos
- although tango's band isn't zit band, they were playing together in college! they all had their rock phase, zedaph even has scars from piercings made in that time
- the star of our show... skizzleman!! skizz for short, he is a manta ray, and he is going mental. he screams, he bites, he fights, he likes to bother others and especially impulse
- skizz made impulse fall in his tank for countless amount of times
- skizz and impulse often fight, verbally and physically, but also for some reason their bond is very strong. they like each other, just in a different way, but their way to this was very hard
- and yep, he is the reason why all of the zit are here. he's just too strong and uncontrollable for one human to handle, so impulse had to get his friends
- skizz is very clumsy and can't exist out of water due to being a manta ray, so trying to escape he makes just one step and then is found right outside the aquarium angry and waiting for someone to come and put him back
•pearl and gem
- pearl is a blue-ringed octopus!
- she spent a lot of time near the shore at the port and most of the time was listening to people, trying to guess meaning of unknown words and adoring strange human stories. it happened in australia, that is the place where she got an accent. it is an exceptional case too, but unlike doc, this accent is not natural, but a learned one
- pearl's only and favourite piece of clothing is a hoodie with oceanarium logo
- as a natural enemy, doc fears to go near pearl. when he is asking her if she's safe, she never gets him a clear answer
- gem is doing mermaid shows! yes, she is not a real one, she just has her costume and adorable coral horns
- oceanarium got gem a tank to exercise and to rehearse her shows. it appeared that pearl was basically living alongside. they liked each other at first sight, but for months weren't able to communicate well, it was only through body language
- pearl sees gem as a goddess for her elegant, exquisite and beautiful movements. no real mermaid moves like that, so that's just something so exotic and unreal in pearl's eyes, it makes her stare without blinking every time
- once impulse was in charge of caring for pearl and he saw what happened between two. he got a permission for gem to visit pearl's aquarium, and that was the first time they got to really know each other. it was the happiest day!!!
- gem is the only one who can calm down skizz and make him feel fear. nobody understands how, but sometimes impulse asks her when skizz is getting unbearable
- impulse, gem and pearl are often seen hanging out together. they created a trio called "soup group". the name was created because of pearl's unexplainable love for soups of any kind
• cleo and joe
- cleo is a sea snake
- she has fish hooks and spear parts in her on places where in canon she usually would get stitches
- she is basically a nature miracle, because she is a zombie, literally dead creature, but for some reason she keeps on going
- half of her organs are not working properly or are not working at all
- because of doc and cleo scientists guess that mermaids are far stronger and tougher than people, as they tend tο survive even in the most dangerous and unreal situations
- also doc and cleo are extremely big
- not to mention these two are really fond of each other. their tanks are located far away, but doc sometimes gets to cleo and they have the best time in the whole world
- joe is an ocean geek who once won an excursion behind the scenes of oceanarium and research center. that's where he met cleo, and for some reason she caught his eye
- he was very persistent and got a permission to sometimes meet cleo under supervision. it was said, that it is good for experience in interspecies communication, so scientists didn't mind
- though, he didn't do anything inappropriate. he was basically just finding a friend in a strange zombie mermaid! he showed her his favourite shows, comic books, was teaching cleo how to read, they were drawing and scrapbooking with her. just a couple of ocean besties!
- although joe cooks and brings mostly exotic or strange foods, cleo likes it a lot
- cleo likes to scare people and mermaids, but when she tried to scare joe she saw only pure excitement in his eyes
•honorable mention, mumbo, who is a plumber and engineer. everyone keeps calling him mario. he even got a big m on his head!
also: it is canon that all of the mermaids are kind of buffed

i may have become slightly obsessed with shrimp🦐 - the way they just pitter patter their lil legs and float around the tank is mesmerising - any advice for someone just dipping their toe in the aquarium hobby?
"may have become slightly obsessed with shrimp" hey me too
i love Aquarium Hobby but it sucks how steep the learning curve is. here are some things i wish i knew when i was depressed/homesick/heartbroken/in college/stressed out of my mind and couldn't keep my fish alive:
don't listen to anyone in a big box store. go to a local aquarium shop. or online forums.
bigger tank is better. a larger volume of water is easier to keep parameters stable in #chemistry
don't change your filter media. it's a lie. every time you change it you are restarting your cycle
go get one of those giant cut to size aquarium media foam block things. cut a piece out and stick it in your filter. now you have an instant cycle if you ever have to set up a new tank in a hurry
old credit cards are the world's best algae scrapers
stable water parameters are more important than textbook perfect ones (this is for like, pH and hardness. your ammonia readings should still be 0)
low tech plants like mosses, java ferns, anubias, etc will make your life easier and your fish happier
seachem prime is hands down the best water conditioner on the market
test strips are fine. they aren't as fine tuned as a liquid tests but if your tank is cycled and stable they're enough to alert you when something goes wrong
when you put someone else in charge of your fish when you go on vacation, put their food in a pill box. now they don't have to guess how much a "small pinch" is
do not buy a fish that cannot fit in your tank fully grown. the voice in your head saying "oh i'll upgrade before my beloved goldfish gets too big" is the devil talking
i hope this is helpful and i hope your aquarium journey goes...swimmingly. i also hope you don't unfollow me because of that joke

Alastor x ♀️! Reader
Path to Damnation
---
Part 1 (Prologue)
Warning: Rated 18+ (just as a general rule of thumb)
---
You are the new resident of the hotel, but you aren't there to redeem yourself. No you are repaying a debt owed and it might cost you more then you bargained for. What should you report to Vox on this?
It was always a bit stuffy inside the conference room, the aquarium walls with circling sharks kept you on edge. Though you kept your composure as Mr. Vox ran his electric blue claw like didget around the rim of his glass.
" Simple enough instructions? Our last effort didn't even last the night. " Vox made a scoff of a laugh. " But with this new fancy hotel, " he put on a large smile and made a mocking excited gestured, then rolled his eyes and looked down at his glass, " it should be easy, you will give me a report every week on the hotel and what that fucker is up to with this damn scheme. "
" I think I can handle it, Mr. Vox. " You give a grin and put a hand on your hip. " It's perfect, they are hiring for a second maid thanks to all of their fancy new rooms and I know how to clean up a mess. "
The grin stretched across Vox's screen. " Then don't fail us. " He swirled his glass before taking a drink. " And we can call ourselves even. "
You nod and excuse yourself from the conference room as quickly as possible. You did have this. You haven't been in hell long, but you watched the news three months ago during the last extermination. You saw the faces of those who you will be calling coworker for now. You checked your phone as you got into the elevator. 1:15 p.m. You were expected to arrive and meet the head of staffing at the Hazbin Hotel, the woman named Vaggie. Room and board is included as pay for now, not that you didn't have a flow of funds right now from your current employers. Report and watch. Remember that. A job. Nothing more.
The ding of the elevator brought you back into reality and you stepped out into the bottom floor of the Vee Tower. The crisp smell of electronic and perfumed workers left your nose and was replaced with sulfur and shit. It was something you had gotten used to, among other things that might have once made you cringe or look away in life now just seemed normal. The walk through town was a dangerous one at the best of times, but you knew how to handle yourself. If you didn't, you would have been double dead by this point. You slip your way through the distracted crowds of sinners gathered around the store front of the Vee tower.
Your heels clicked against the concrete of the sidewalk as you made your way through Pentagram City, you looked at your phone again at the directions to the hotel. The Hazbin Hotel. It had been the butt of everyone's joke just nine months prior, but after that little maid had killed the leader of the exterminaton angels it changed. Which has really put a craw in your employers ass. The Vees had hoped the Radio Demon - who was helping with this 'princess passion project ' as they had put it - had disappeared again after that battle but much to Vox's dismay, it seems like he's a lot harder to kill.
You stop as you reach large wrought iron gates and a winding cobblestone pathway to a massive hotel, a large golden statue was in front of the entrance. Is that a dragon goat? You know what, it's hell, why should anything surprise you at this point. You gaze up at it as you pass beneath it on your way to the French double doors, it was massive and the whine of the gold made it seem like someone polished it everyday.
" Quite a work of art, don't you agree?" The crackle of static was the only warning you had before the filtered voice hit your ears from behind you.
You spun on your heels and you were looking into the intense red gaze of the deer demon known as Alastor. He seemed to chuckle at your response and stood up straight from the slightly leaned posture he had. " Oh, yes. Hi. Hello. " You clear your throat and keep your gaze on his smiling mug. Remember why you are here. " I'm here to find a Vaggie ? I am the new hire."
Alastor looked over you for a moment, his eyes drifted from your shoes up to your face and he made a hum sound. " Ah, so she was serious in requiring more help. She only needed to ask and I could have provided. But a fresh face to the hotel will do just nicely. " He extended his hand, " Alastor, quite a pleasure to meet you. Though I am sure you have heard of me no doubt."
You make a laugh and you take his hand, he shook it a little hard and you felt your body wiggle in the force of his shake. " Of course, Well, at least what you used to do was rather famous in the circles I ran in. Though you havent done much in the past eight years. "
His eyebrow twitched, he made a laugh. Loud, a bit forced. " Ha ha, well yes, I had taken a well needed vacation and now my time is taken up by this little project I am helping with."
The sound of a door opening, and a stern female voice called over. " Alastor, Niffty got caught in the chandelier again, could you- oh. " The white haired woman walked over, she had her hair pulled back in a ponytail that was held with a red ribbon and her bangs covered one eye. " You must be who I talked with on the phone. " Then she shot a glare at the Radio Demon. " Are you fucking scaring off our new help?"
Alastor put his hands behind his back. " Nothing of the sort! I was merely introducing myself, as a hotel manager should, hm? Now it seems I am needed elsewhere, " he looked over his shoulder as he began to walk away. His gaze on you for a moment, your stomach felt like it was in a vice with the way his red eyes met yours. " Looking forward to working with you. "
Then he was gone.
You blink and see Vaggie's fingers snapping in front of you. " Oh, sorry, did you say something, ma'am?" You day as you look over at her.
Her stern face softened a bit and she put her hand on her hip. " Come, let me show you the room you will be staying in and we can introduce you to everyone else. Don't worry, they aren't all like... Him." Her nose crinkled as she glanced in the direction that Alastor had left.
" Oh, alright. How many people are staying here anyways?" You ask as you fall in line behind her as Vaggie went inside.
Vaggie made a hum, her hands went behind her back like she was in a slight march. " Currently? We only have one guest, Angel Dust. Our staff includes myself, Husk the concierge and bartender, Niffty is our other resident maid, and you just met Alastor. We often have Charlie's father here as well as 'hotel manager consultant ' as he calls himself. And of course Charlie herself, she's particularly excited to meet you. "
She seemed to speak in a fond tone towards the end, you chuckle and smile. " Well if she is running the place, it's only right I meet her as well."
" She's busy right now prepping your welcoming party. She's going a little crazy in the new banquet hall. " Vaggie made a breath of a laugh. " So I hope you are hungry.
The hallways were carpeted in a elegant red with gold along the edges, the walls were a cream with gold molding along the top and bottom, it was almost a bit intimidating to be walking through in your dirty shoes. Thankfully you had dressed nicely at least in a simple button up blouse and an ankle length skirt, professional was what you had been going for and from what you could remember this outfit fit the bill.
She lead you up to the room you will be staying in for the foreseeable future. It was large, with the carpet being a plain dark red with a queen size bed with plain sheets and a dresser in the corner next to a dark wooden door. You assumed it must lead to a bathroom.
" It's bare, but you are welcome to decorate how you want. Charlie wants everyone to be able to ' express themselves' in healthy ways. " Vaggie explained as you made your way to the bed and felt the soft sheets.
It didn't smell foul in here you noticed. Everything had a sweet scent like apple blossoms and nature, you had almost forgotten what it had smelled like. It was comforting almost, but at the same time you had gotten so used to the copper and sulphur smell that seeped through Hell.
" That's fine. " You made a small chuckle, you clap your hands together as you spin around. " So... A party?"

What's The Best Aquarium Filter For My Fish Tank?
Introduction
When setting up a fish tank, one of the most crucial components you'll need is an aquarium filter. A good filter ensures the water in your tank remains clean and healthy for your fish. But with so many options available, how do you choose the best aquarium filter for your fish tank? In this article, we'll explore different types of aquarium filters and discuss important factors to consider when making your selection.
Tumblr media
Understanding Aquarium Filtration
Before diving into the specifics, it's essential to understand the purpose of aquarium filtration. Filtration plays a vital role in maintaining water quality by removing waste, chemicals, and excess nutrients from the tank. It helps to create a stable and balanced environment for your fish, promoting their overall health and well-being.
Importance of Choosing the Right Aquarium Filter
Selecting the right aquarium filter is crucial for several reasons. Firstly, it ensures the removal of harmful substances that can harm your fish. Secondly, it helps maintain water clarity, preventing the build-up of debris and algae. Lastly, a proper filter supports the nitrogen cycle in the tank, where beneficial bacteria break down toxic ammonia into less harmful substances.
Types of Aquarium Filters
Undergravel Filters
Undergravel filters are placed beneath the gravel substrate in your tank. They work by pulling water through the gravel, where beneficial bacteria colonize and break down waste products. Undergravel filters are affordable and efficient for small tanks but may not be suitable for heavily stocked aquariums.
Canister Filters
Canister filters are external filters that provide excellent mechanical, chemical, and biological filtration. They consist of a canister filled with filter media and a water pump to circulate water. Canister filters are known for their high filtration capacity and are ideal for larger tanks with a significant fish population.
Hang-On-Back (HOB) Filters
HOB filters are easy to install and are suitable for both small and large aquariums. These filters hang on the back of the tank and draw water through a cartridge or filter media, providing mechanical and biological filtration. HOB filters are compact, affordable, and offer efficient water circulation.
Sponge Filters
Sponge filters are air-driven filters that use a sponge as the primary filtration media. They provide gentle filtration and are suitable for breeding tanks or tanks with delicate fish species. Sponge filters are affordable, easy to maintain, and provide a surface for beneficial bacteria to thrive.
Internal Filters
Internal filters are compact filters that are fully submerged in the aquarium. They offer mechanical and biological filtration and are suitable for smaller tanks or as supplemental filtration in larger setups. Internal filters are easy to install, affordable, and provide adequate water circulation.
Wet/Dry Filters
Wet/Dry filters, also known as trickle filters, offer excellent biological filtration by exposing the water to the air. They consist of a chamber filled with filter media and a drip tray where water trickles down. Wet/Dry filters are ideal for larger tanks with a high bio-load, as they provide ample oxygenation and support beneficial bacteria growth.
Factors to Consider When Choosing an Aquarium Filter
When selecting the best aquarium filter for your fish tank, keep the following factors in mind:
Tank Size and Capacity: Consider the size and capacity of your tank, as different filters are designed for specific volumes of water.
Filtration Capacity: Evaluate the filtration capacity of the filter, ensuring it can handle the waste produced by your fish.
Maintenance Requirements: Assess the maintenance needs of the filter, including cleaning and replacement of filter media.
Noise Level: Consider the noise level of the filter, especially if you have the tank in a quiet environment.
Cost: Determine your budget and find a filter that offers the best value for your money.
Making the Best Choice for Your Fish Tank
To choose the best aquarium filter for your fish tank, consider the factors mentioned above and match them to your specific requirements. It's important to find a filter that suits your tank size, filtration needs, and budget. Consult with knowledgeable aquarium experts or do thorough research before making a final decision.
Conclusion
Selecting the right aquarium filter is crucial for maintaining a healthy and thriving fish tank. By understanding the different types of filters available and considering factors such as tank size, filtration capacity, and maintenance requirements, you can make an informed decision. Remember to prioritize the well-being of your fish when choosing the best aquarium filter for fish tank.

# sugawara koushi - aquarium
Tumblr media
a/n = ahh, idk what to think about this, but i do love the idea of sugawara + a zoo date. also i'm so sad my bf is going on a football camp in a week and he has two trainings everyday now so we can't spend much time together T-T
summary = sugawara takes you on your first date.
warnings = none i think? comparing sugawara to a stingray.
Tumblr media
to say sugawara was stressed out was an understatement.
he felt as if he was going to pass out from stress at any given second. usually, he wouldn't be as hesitant about going on a date with a girl. but this time was completely different. the silver haired boy couldn't ignore one crucial fact that was lingering in the back of his mind this whole time.
you're his best friend's sister.
although daichi gave him a green light on this, sugawara still had some doubts of his own. he didn't want to mess anything up; that would mean not only losing in your eyes, but also losing in daichi's. and he really didn't want that to happen.
"hello, earth to suga" he heard you say, snapping out of his thoughts as you slowly waved your hand in front of his face, looking at him concerned. "it's our turn to buy the tickets."
right. the tickets.
sugawara did a lot of thinking before choosing a place for this date, opting for something safe yet fun; the local zoo. the fact that his idea brought a big smile onto your face was enough to know that he chose the right location for this.
"two tickets, please." sugawara noticed you getting your wallet out, his hands immediately traveling to yours to stop you, a warm smile on his face. "oh, there's no need for that. i'll pay."
you smiled at him as he proceeded to pay for the tickets, his hand still not leaving yours. you didn't bother to try and shake it off or get your hand out of his, not at all. something about this felt incredibly right to both of you, even though in normal circumstances you would probably be too embarrassed to initiate the touch yourself.
the moment you stepped inside the zoo, the little map of the place you received along with the tickets in your hand, you were immediately excited to see one thing in particular; the aquarium. sugawara didn't even try to stop you from excitedly dragging him there. seeing the smile on your face, how much your eyes were sparkling at the mere idea of being able to explore this place, made his heart flutter.
"oh." you suddenly stopped in your tracks the moment you opened the door, sugawara looking over to you with a questioning look on his face, as if asking if there was something wrong. he was met with a grin on your face, as you simply stated:
"there's no one here."
perfect.
sugawara smiled as well, his hand gently squeezing yours as you stepped further in.
the first part of the aquarium looked pretty generic; smaller fish tanks with different types of fish were displayed all over the place, with a single bigger one in the middle of the room, shaped like a column.
the boy's hand left yours as he quickly moved to stand behind the column, right across from you. the fish looked at him with curiosity, as he took a step closer towards the glass.
your laughter erupted in the room, the echo inside repeating it a few times.
sugawara's face looked really silly through the glass, as if he was using a social media filter in real life. you quickly took out your phone and snapped a picture of it, knowing it will be a great memory for later.
"this fish looks like my brother." a giggle escaped your lips as you pointed at one of the fish, sugawara following after your finger, his eyes focused on what you were showing. it was his turn to laugh now; you were definitely right, it reminded him of daichi's expression whenever he had to make a serious speech as a captain.
although you were siblings, you didn't share looks with your brother. at first glance, people would probably assume you were the sister of anyone but him. but it was all clear the moment both of you smiled. your smiles were the same, and as much as sugawara loved seeing his best friend smile, he liked your smile a little bit more. and being able to watch it not leaving your face for so long was almost like being in heaven for him.
the next room in the aquarium was the one sugawara knew you were probably excited for the most. and because of that, he was incredibly glad that there were no other people inside; if they would come here at least an hour or two later, the place would probably already be crowded.
the infamous aquarium tunnel was a place that everyone who arrived at the zoo had to go through, otherwise their visit wouldn't be complete. it was the most interesting place there, and on top of that, incredibly beautiful as well. and when it was completely empty, the beauty of it was visible even more; it was almost like a magical land.
"ah, it's so pretty here." you looked around, a bright smile on your face, closely observing the fish and other animals around you. and sugawara had to agree, it was really pretty here.
but his eyes just couldn't leave you for a second.
he stood there in silence, hands in his pockets as he watched your figure roam around the place, your eyes sparkling with excitement. his eyes trailed over to the side almost immediately as he saw you turning his head towards him.
"look, this one's cute!" you said, pointing to a stingray swimming over the two of you, the animal's face seemingly looking as if it was smiling. "kinda looks like you."
sugawara let out a small laugh at her words, scratching his neck as his cheeks turned a light shade of pink.
"do i really look like that?" he asked, trying to look closer and see if there were really any similarities between him and the animal.
"oh, i just think both you and that stingray are cute." you said, trying to avoid eye contact with the boy, the tips of your ears turning red from embarrassment at your own words. "and its color is also similar to your hair."
sugawara gave a small nod in response, turning his head down, a shy smile gracing his face. you were standing in front of him now, at less than an arms length.
"you're cute too, you know." he broke the silence, a faint laugh escaping his lips. "especially today. you look quite breathtaking, to be honest."
his hands traveled to lightly grab yours, a small yet genuine smile appearing on your face at his actions. he took a small step closer, closely observing if anything he's doing is not making you uncomfortable. but your reaction was leading to rather opposite conclusions, as you too, moved a bit closer to him.
sugawara hesitated for a second, his eyes meeting yours.
"y/n" he said, his voice quiet and slightly shaky. "can- can i kiss you?"
although a bit surprised by his question, you slowly nodded as an answer, feeling his hand traveling up and gently cupping your cheeks. suga leaned in, stopping mere millimeters from your face to smile at you one more time, before his lips met yours in a short, yet passionate kiss.
as much as he seemed collected right after he pulled away, the silver haired boy was a mess inside; he wanted to jump around with a triumphant smile on his face, screaming to everyone about what just happened. instead of that, he interlocks his fingers with yours, trying to ignore how red his face was.
your face was almost as red as his. the pinkish shade on your cheeks turning into a deeper one as you looked at him, a stupid grin on your face after what just happened.
"let's go" you broke the silence between you two, tugging on his arm a little, the smile not leaving your face. "we still have an entire zoo to go through."

Who do you imagine confessing first? Kou or Mitsuba? How would you envision or want a mitsukou confession to go down?
Mitsuba!
I personally see Kou as someone that hides when his feelings are something he is ashamed off. He needs to be pushed to the edge, to express any big conflict he has, otherwise he can spend years bottling it up.
Tumblr media
And even when Kou is so consumed by a feeling that he needs to vent, he is quick to focus on others.
Tumblr media
He is a character that doesn’t like to indulge in his own wants, not feeling like he deserve it, or ashamed of wanting more for himself. Hence why he was so panicked in the red house and why I believe love in a manga where being in love is mostly depicted in selfish or obsessive ways would conflict him to death
And Mitsuba absolutely conflicts him. When the topic is directly brought up he tends to go ‘...’ and sweat
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He does not want to think about Mitsuba at all despite constantly thinking about him.
The only person he has talked about Mitsuba with (outside mitsuba himself) is Nene, and the intention seems to had been to just catch her up with Mitsuba's situation. The glimpses of personal troubles he shares seem to have been on accident.
Tumblr media
It's enough to make him sweat and change subjects with a smile, as if thinking “I shouldn’t have said that, let’s forget about it!”
Tumblr media
Kou either has no idea what he feels or he does have some idea but doesn’t want to. I think he is mostly confused though. Which makes sense cause his feelings about Mitsuuba are hella complicated.
Tumblr media
Kou seems to think whatever he feels is a sort of strange and convoluted annoyance, which is a similar conclusion to what Mitsuba had reached at first.
Tumblr media
But while Kou is still mostly stuck in “god why do I need him? Why do i think so much about him?? He is annoying.” stage, refusing to explore or indulge in the positive feelings Mitsuba brings, Mitsuba already know a lot about his own feelings and he does not hesitate to share them.
He understands the problems of a ghost being attached to a human and vice versa, so he has reasons to not confess, but even if there is conflict, he doesn’t run away from his feelings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mitsuba was the one that informed Nene about their little aquarium trip. She had no idea before, so Kou (who is far closer to her) didn’t share anything.
Tumblr media
Even if Kou does realizes he is in love, I personally can't imagine he would try to start a relationship, cause he wants the very best for the people he loves and he does not consider himself a good option.
Remember his crush on Nene? How he never made a move and tried to do what would make her happy? He pushed her to stay with Hanako the second he felt like he was not just some ‘evil spirit’, he never considers himself a better option than the dead murderer at any point, and he is very quick to sabotage himself for others.
Tumblr media
So he would likely just hate himself for thinking he is not the best but still wants to be the one to help Mitsuba, be the one he depends on, and stay by his side. Unwilling to be ignored.
Tumblr media
And I can’t imagine being so conflicted and hating yourself as a very good push to confess to someone.
But I can imagine Mitsuba accidentally confessing, since it was shown constantly that this boy is gay as hell for kou and that he can’t lie. He feels something strongly? There is a big chance he will blurt it out: No bravado, no filter.
Tumblr media
And if this confession does happen, I have no idea how I want it to go down.
I just know I want Kou to sabotage himself somehow, cause that’s what this boy constantly does with Mitsuba, and I just can’t imagine a confession being smooth and sappy with them regardless of who ends up confessing in canon, it would just feel out of character to me, unless of course, it has the proper set up/character development for it.

Tank update!
Tumblr media
On plants:
I keep having to trim back the rotala rotundifolia because it grows at insane rates and covers all the other plants, the light gluttons. The cryptocorine wendtii are doing much better: one that had completely melted is growing back leaves at really quick pace for a crypt; the one I accidentally cut the leaves of (was trying to cut a bad leaf and accidentally cut that one and the only other healthy leaf the plant had) is coming back and growing a new leaf slowly but surely after I cut its bad-looking roots and replanted it.
I'm fiddling with the amount of potassium I should add as fertilizer, since many plants started showing signs of a potassium overdose - started at 5ml, now 3ml to see if any signs of a potassium deficit show up.
I've also been experimenting with the placement for the CO3 diffuser* (*see: a chunk of aquarium sponge pushed into hose, lol). I've now moved it to where the bubbles rise to the filter's waterfall, so it naturally pushes and distributes smaller bubbles around while bigger bubbles get broken into smaller bubbles. The first location I put it on, one of the corners, worked ok-ish but it wasted a lot of CO2. The second location was right underneath the filter intake, testing if the filter's impeller could maybe break the bubbles and dissolve the CO2 in the water before going back into the tank, but that not only didn't work but also put extra stress on the impeller which made it very noisy and annoying lol. Its current location as previously described seems to be doing the best out of the three, with the plants releasing a lot of oxygen! :3
Lastly, I'm still experimenting with the light fixture. Went from two 325lm 6500k bulbs and one 475lm 2700k bulb, to changing one of the 325lm bulbs for an 800ml 6500k one, two having two 800lm 6500k + one 475lm 2700k, to taking the 2700k out. The two 800lm bulbs have a good reach and colour temperature, buuuut they did leave a darker spot right in the middle where the hygrophilla angustifolia are, so I added one little 325lm 6500k bulb back. Right now, I'm using two 800lm bulbs and one 325lm bulb, all 6500k, with the dimmer one right in the middle.
On water chemistry:
I've gotten the nitrate levels down considerably, from 120ppm (very unsafe and bad) to 20ppm (good :3), turns out the food I was using to up the ammonia created inconmensurable and uncontrollable amounts of waste, gracias Shulet ni para ciclar acuarios servís.
Speaking of ammonia, I'd gotten the ammonia down to 0ppm but these last few days I've noticed it increase up to 0.25ppm - possibly due to a drop in pH caused by the DIY CO2, which could mean the "ammonia" detected is actually ammonium, much less toxic than ammonia, as the API Ammonia test detects both and has no way to distinguish between the two. As An Autistic Guy obsessed with numbers and data and accuracy I'm so happy that the numbers are inaccurate and the test is so vague, I love that so much, it doesn't make me want to pull my teeth out at all (I am in pain).
Despite the "ammonia" issues, things look good rn! Especially thanks to keeping nitrates under control at long last, the presence of visible algae has started to decrease. I've been taking the brown algae out with a stick, and have been dosing hydrogen peroxide locally to the harder-to-deal-with filament algae to weaken it enough for the snails to go at it. I'm happy to report that the hydrogen peroxide has weakened the filament algae to a point where the nerite snail is able to eat it.
Tumblr media
(All the little dots floating in the water are planorbis snail larvae that hatched today!! Yippee!!!)
On stocking:
It's still just snails for now. A week or two ago I discovered a bunch of dead or half dead planorbis snails in the filter intake tube, victims of the siren call of all the brown algae within it - apparently - though two adults survived and have laid various egg sacks on the glass, on plants, etc, so their presence in the tank will make a triumphant comeback for sure. The one adult bladder snail I had also fell victim to the filter intake, though that one's babies had been crawling around for a few days before its untimely death; there'll be plenty of snails going around for everyone. Don't worry, I've fixed the issue now and snails with shells that are 2mm thick or more will be safe from now on. The nerite hasn't laid any eggs yet, though when it does I'll probably scrape them off (they don't hatch in freshwater).
I'll be gone from monday til thursday, and though I'm a little worried (as always) I am also confident in that things will be fine once I come back. I'm really excited, I should be able to add the tank's main attraction, a betta fish, very soon. :3

I'm a bit shy asking this so I'll stick to anon for the time being. I visited a pet store today and they had the cutest little fish roaming at the bottom of one of their tanks gulping and spitting out sand. I couldn't find the species on the side with the names and tried to do some research and I think it may be a Sand Sifting Goby? All I saw was that they require salt water and that it seemed to feed off whatever was in that sand. I'm genuinely obsessed with this little guy and took plenty of videos, but I don't want to make bad decisions and get one without proper knowledge and research. I was curious to know if you had any facts or tips to help me out? Thank you 🩷
Sounds adorable!! Sand sifting gobies are a whole group of species that come in a variety of colours, all of them looking quite sweet! No doubt the fish was captivating to look at doing its little sand sifting :D
You say you do not wish to make a bad decision and simply impulse buy one without research, which is a good mindset to start from. Fish are not a monolith of animals, they're a large and diverse group of species, each one having their own specific criteria for keeping. I don't know if you've kept fish before or not anon, but I will be giving a general explanation that lets a person who hasn't get started: fish require specific water parameters (temperature, pH, general hardness and calcium carbonate concentration, salinity, etc.), substrate (thickness at the bottom, colour, roughness), plants (density of plants, real or fake, etc.), decor (will the decor scratch or accidentally harm the fish, do they like to hide, etc.), tankmates (of their own species or of different species, or lack thereof), food (specific dietary preferences and restrictions), lighting (harsh or dimmed, amount of light a day), so many things! Freshwater and saltwater aquariums are also different and require different equipment.
The very first thing I recommend you do is go to the pet store (or contact them through social media or email) and ask them what species the goby is. This way you can do research on the specific species instead of sifting through general information about all sand sifting gobies, which may be completely different from our dear little friend at the pet store! That's actually the crux of obtaining a fish or another aquatic life companion: RESEARCH! Soooo much research. You must research your finned friend so much it's starting to feel ridiculous and your family is asking you if you're "still planning on that fish or..?". Look up care guides and fish forums, watch YouTube videos, gather up all the information you get. Some of it contradicts itself, which is why it's important to look to many many sources. Try seeing the newest ones and see what parameters and suggestions are most common. That's only the beginning, though: if you've never owned a fish before, you need to learn about all these aquarium-keeping terms and how to maintain an aquarium, what you need for an aquarium, how to cycle it, etc.. Actually, that's probably best to do before you look up care guides, now that I think about it... Or do both at the same time, that's what I did when I was planning my shrimp tank. See beginner's guides to saltwater fishkeeping, on several sites, move onto more advanced guides and learn the terminology. Learn why these parameters matter so much, or why and how to cycle your tank. Weigh the pros and cons of having plants or some plant species, research different substrates, see what tanks and lights and filters are smartest for you, learn about aquarium pests. Try to find a good middle ground for what's sensible for you and what's the best for your pet; we keep animals for our enjoyment, but we also want to make sure they're having their best time too! Make a list for all the items you need, see how much different options cost, make a budget. Research the water parameters of your city or town, or test the water yourself. See what needs to be done to it so it's suitable for your animal. I've never kept a saltwater tank so I don't know the specifics of it myself, but if you wish to be a saltwater aquarium keeper you must learn! It's a lengthy process, but I went through seven months of preparation before I got my dwarf shrimps. This included my research (I don't have an estimate for how many articles and forums I looked through but my "Shrimps" playlist I made in preparation has 52 videos of just cherry shrimp and aquarium-keeping educational videos), shopping for equipment and plants and setting everything up, and cycling my aquarium. Dear folks in my notes also informed me that saltwater tanks and setups tend to be more expensive than freshwater setups!
Maybe at some point you find that the setup and equipment are simply too expensive, or incompatible with your lifestyle or living situation, or you change your mind for another reason during the preparation process. And that's valid and okay! You took the time to learn and what you learned was just that: it wasn't meant to be. It's much better than getting an animal without preparing and only finding out afterwards that you're incompatible in some way. Learning about these things won't be for "nothing" either, as now you have the valuable knowledge of how to keep fish and an aquarium! It may prove useful later in life if you eventually do obtain an aquarium, or you can become the resident fish knower (very rewarding). You may also decide to look into freshwater gobies, as they are gobies all the same but easier to care for! Please take a look at the folks in the notes and their lovely info.
Hope this helps anon! Perhaps you were wishing for a fish facts -format post, but my measly one-to-four sentence daily fish facts do not a species expert make. Instead I want to give out a guide on how to get started on your goby-keeping journey. I hope it works out for you, I wish you good luck! :)

okay so yorukura definitely didnt stick the landing... honestly episode nine mightve felt like more of a season finale if it had been leading into a season two. i dont think its bad necessarily, splitting kanoyoru toward the end of the story but i dont think they got enough one on one time together before it ended. kimura and kiui really got time to shine, which i do appreciate, but kanoyoru has been set up from episode one. theyre really the heart of the show, and giving them so little time together- even with a relationship left unconfirmed, like in lycoris recoil- kind of kills it. they were going FULL THROTTLE on kanoyoru endgame. they didnt include an aquarium date in episode three a cheek kiss in episode five the motorcycle beach date in episode seven, all of mahiru's teasing and her remarks about a special someone who inspired her and she's interested in for it to be unintentional. their breakup had me on the edge of my seat, but their make up just left me wanting.
kimura and kiui's endgame developments are generally pretty well liked and with good reason. mei got to confess her feelings and she made it clear that in contrast to her reasoning as a fan it was because of her real, less marketable traits that she loved kano. that its because theyre such different people and because she doesnt always understand her or want to emulate her that she loves kano now. and she expressed that through her own real, unmarketable trait, showing a little bit more of her own growth and self acceptance. that said its got a little less punch to it given the use of "nonotan" was nearly back to back with kano's flashbacks of her idol days and her confessing to her father that she can barely remember the last time she was called by her real name. kiui stood up to their explicitly transphobic old friends and regained a bit of that childhood confidence. maybe im a bit dumb bc the trans coding didnt quite fully click for me until then but that really blew me out of the water. like yeah oh loss of self confidence due to social isolation- and onset of puberty. when they clicked with the driving school friend who is also trans, even under the baggy dysphoria fits kano noticed that their chest was slightly bigger than the woman who had work done. kinda masc vtuber rig. pink hair and pronouns. its really cool that they confirmed it!
independent of the yuribait i do think kano and mahiru were decently done like... in all aspects aside from one another. mahiru previously worried about comments criticizing her technical art and it drove her to improve. the JELEE gang's support is why she had the courage to start drawing again in the first place but kano's mom gave constructive criticism, and then praise for the initiative and self improvement when she saw the arm edit. but that focus on technical skills and approval from others becomes a double edged blade and she doesnt deliver her best work until she draws authentically to herself and her tastes as an artist. i feel like they couldve delivered on the jellyfish metaphor, about how jellyfish can only filter and reflect the light around them, but that the light reflected is made more beautiful for it as well or... something. the point of splitting a dynamic duo in the third act is generally to let them breathe and develop apart from one another and prove they can stand on their own before bringing them together stronger for it, but though the theme is still there i feel like they kind of dropped the light and jellyfish dynamic after the fight. that said mahiru's show of devotion to kano being a timeslot at the show, the jellyfish art all over the city, and all of that being done via the show light projectors, mahiru's art made to literally shine for kano was a great touch.
now kano... this might be controversial but i dont see her ending as a "forgiving an abusive parent", or at least i dont think thats the point of it. last we see of her mom is at her graduation ceremony. kano leaves campus and sees her mom and her sister came to see her. she says she made her moms dream come true and she's clearly happy about it- but then she walks away. its not full severance but she's not living on her mom's agenda anymore. her sister was in the car- her mom mightve meant for a family meal after the graduation ceremony. from kano's words this might be the first time theyve seen one another since the concert. but kano has plans with her friends and doesnt even hesitate. her mom discarded her but it was kano who made her dream come true anyway. and now she's moving on to what she built for herself. before, she was singing to prove her mom wrong- but she was still singing because of her. when the set her 100k follower goal she was going off her mom's success model of numbered audience. she was with the sundolls as a nepobaby because her mom was their producer and wanted her in. but JELEE is hers and its what she's pursuing. all that said im dead curious about what's up with her family situation- her dad seems to be a shut in maybe? he's deliberately a gaping abscence in comparison to kano's hypercontrolling mom, and theyre definitely split. and through his viewpoint in kano's flashbacks as well as the fact that he was the reason she was in shibuya to see mahiru's mural, and also the fact that he's the last shot of the ed really makes me wonder.
overall disregarding the finale i'd say the show was still about a 8/10 but even with all that going for it they chickened out on kanoyoru and the whole episode was cheapened by it. maybe the full finalized concert lyrics of shinkai yuei had a more uplifting love song vibe to it, maybe if they had made it clear that she was singing a love song for mahiru. maybe if mahiru had been the one to encourage her instead of melo. i dont dislike these decisions independently, pursuing passions for yourself and the connection it offers with other people rather than one person in particular, forgiving yourself and laying the past to rest are good. but the last episode feels incredibly empty and it feels like overall they actively dodged every opportunity to fulfill the conclusion theyve been dangling since the start. it burns to say since i was rooting so hard for this show but theres really no other word for it but baiting. its yuribait.

Tumblr keeps crashing each time I send this so I gotta be quick: do have any tips on how to study biology (college is not an option atm)
Oh boy! I will do my best!
I've listed the basic irl resources for biological information first, followed by some online resources.
I've got a strong Animalia bias, so apologies that I don't have any botany-specific sites for you. 😔
I'm sure there's some stuff I'm forgetting. I'll add on to this if I think of anything!
If there's anything specific you need help finding a reliable biological resource for, let me know and I will try my best to help find you something!
•••
Finding primary sources (stuff written by the scientists who did the research [i.e. a journal article]) is always very good, but reliable secondary resources (someone else summarizing other people's research [i.e. Wikipedia page, book]) can be very valuable as well.

I would highly recommend checking to see if there is a Nature Park in your area! Nature parks often have volunteer programs and/or free educational opportunities. In my experience, naturalists are always very excited to meet new people interested in learning about local ecology!
-
There's also Zoos and Aquariums of course, although I know they cost money and are typically geared more towards kids. I'm lucky to live near some nice ones. Maybe check if there are any special programs happening at Zoos/Aquariums in your area (by checking their website[s]), where you might learn more than you would on a normal day trip.
-
Plus natural history museums, which usually have rotating exhibits so that you can keep learning new things when you come back! They also have more of an all-ages vibe than Zoos in my experience. Once again dependant on if there's one near you, and not free.
-
Last but not least: the local library, although obviously not every published book is a flawless resource. Still, might be interesting to poke around! There's usually some sort of digital search catalogue to make finding things easier. Libraries are fun :)

Jstor is GREAT. Not all jstor articles are open access/free, but some are! And you can set a search filter to show you only things you can access.
One good way to find out what experts have written for other experts about biology: search a species name or biological concept or type of experimental study, etc. etc., in jstor's journal articles. I've linked a search for journal articles "I can access" containing the word "biology" as an example.
The website layout can feel a little obtuse at first but I think if you fiddle around with it a bit, it's not too bad to figure out? Feel free to kick my ass if I'm wrong djgjkeg

Wikipedia is actually a very good place to introduce yourself to a lot of biological concepts. I would recommend checking out some of the sources yourself if you can-- usually at least some of them are free, and that can introduce you to new free resources for learning more (today I discovered bugguide.net!). Often they will link you to jstor.
But biology-focused wiki pages have a pretty good track record for Correct Information in my experience. The only issue I've run into is there being too little information sometimes.
-
Pubmed is a really good resource to read biomedical scientific papers for free if that interests you at all! Reading scientific papers is a really important skill and I think you can pick up a lot just by diving in and googling words you don't know.
A well-designed experiment is replicable (that is, you can understand from the paper how they set things up to the point that you could do it yourself, given the resources). It's also important to pay attention to sample size. The more times you replicate any process in an experiment, the more likely you will be able to identify what the most common result really is, and why.
-
Fishbase is a website I was introduced to in my icthyology class to find info about different fish species :) It kind of just dumps all the info on you in a big text wall, but many pages include great details about life cycle and diet that might go unmentioned on wiki pages.
-
I've never used bugguide.net before today, but so far it seems solid and like it has a lot of good info. I assume it is similar to fishbase but for bugs
-
EDIT: FREE ONLINE TEXTBOOKS I FORGOT ABOUT!!!
I used both of these for university classes at some point. I didn't use them much, so there may be issues I don't know about.
In my experience though they were solid resources, if a little confusingly worded at times. Bouncing between the textbooks and wikipedia tended to help me.
