here, have my notes on a vapian conlang

all this is in not-super-accurate ipa, i’m working on a writing system right now which i will share later once i’m sure i like it. more splinguistics under the cut

i did my best to have the sounds mostly accurate to canon, as i’ve talked about in previous posts v d p s sh j n all the listed vowels and (ugh) r are sounds in canon. m and b are both common babbling sounds in human children because they’re both lip based rather than dental, so i figured “mostly human-looking” vapians who can make the sound probably also have it in their language. k and x i just added for funsies <3

i really want to see what the original coalition was like linguistically, because they likely would’ve influenced each other a bunch. verge and bertbert can hold a basic conversation with several misunderstandings but basic comprehension in their respect native tongues. anyway since most of the planets we’ve seen only seem to have one language allow me to propose a story:

the teds show up and learn to communicate in the most commonly spoken language. they do not bother to learn any other language, meaning that anyone speaking to their main source of transportation need to learn this language. eventually, it dominates the planet, and the other languages gradually become unknown to the greater triad, italy style.

does anyone else in this fandom conlang. please i need peer review

HAPPY WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH!!!

On a midnight burger fixation so I had to draw my favorite diner girls! There are so many wonderful female characters in this podcast and they’re all very dear to me so I tried to include references to a lot of them but inevitably I couldn’t fit everyone in :((

I’ve never actually conceptualized how I picture them? And honestly they change in my mind all the time but in THIS current moment this is how I picture them and I love them so so dearly <3

I wonder how vapians measured time, i wonder what their gods were like, what was architecture / infrastructure like? How did vapians treat each other? Were they nice to each other? Are they hostile towards one another when theyre out there in the triad because they know they have a target on their back and theyre unsafe or is there a sort of quiet/loud kinship that they have because their only means now is to Survive? I wonder if they have some pressure to like carry on the species too? Or it definitely would have to depend like anyone else randomly meeting a person but i wonder if they have that instinctual pressure if thats an asset of survival.

I wonder if theyre like mountain/rock climber and everything was set up laterally and that felt natural for them before they built life to be more horizontal or whatever that evolution process looked like. I wonder so mich about vapians... I want to know what verges parents were like. What was the 1920s like for vapians? How did they dress when they lived? I have so many questions that verge has probably asked their entire life... I love lore about endangered/wiped out special life in space its a fixation of mine, i know you can barely tell-

I have some insane BertBert fanart planned but for now. I think I've gotten my designs for these two down. I don't think these are SUPER finalized yet but they're concrete ideas on paper and I'm pretty happy with them.

The main thought processes here were

Originally, I was going to make her owl-like, but I really badly wanted to lean into the tropical area of Sigius. Workshopped a few bird concepts but Blue and Golden Macaws stuck out the most.

So pretty. So majestic.

I gave her large ears (Big ears are great for hot weather!) and that was that.

Bert's design came to me fairly easily. So to end off this section I give you a fun fact.

Macaws blush! When they're happy or excited, their face will turn red.

How cute.

VERGE

Now Verge. Their design gave me some trouble. My main thought process going into it was

Canonically at least Mostly humanoid.

And that's about all I had. Originally, going into it, I went with a stag beetle.

You can tell this Really wasn't going in my favor. I was already branching off to other concepts before really giving it a chance, the hair and horns especially, though cool, weren't really giving me what I wanted. It really didn't look alien enough for me to be satisfied. I scrapped this concept entirely and went back to the drawing board, carrying the mantis concept with me.

Did a lot, and I mean a LOT of mantis research. How their mouth worked especially. It seemed like such a cool thing to incorporate into a design.

And in the end I ended up with these concepts. Obviously I wasn't going to go with the fully bug version, but drawing two extremes helped me find a healthy medium I was happy with.

It was off to the races with the coloring stage, and again I was stuck on Verge. Namely, the color. Red made them look too much like an ant, and green.. just wasn't doing it for me. Back to research I went, for more different species of Mantis. I, of course, found the motherload.

MEET THE CONEHEAD MANTIS OOH YEAH BABY

It was at this point I also changed the antenna on Verge's head to match my new inspiration, and Purple Verge is born. I hope you've enjoyed my yapping.
