Day Ninety-one
I'm loaded up with throat sweets, and the weather is clear and sunny, so adter a quick visit to Minehead's beach it's time to tackle Exmoor!
With the routes closest to the coast being a busy A road or the cycle trail involving rough bridleways that will play havoc with my bike, I set out from Minehead a short waus back down the road to head up through Dunster.
Dunster is a lovely little village that acts as a gateway into Exmoor National Park, and a short distance through I head onto some nice quiet country lanes through the forests that make up much of the bases of the hills here.
The elevation is increasing steadily but gently as I make my way through Knowle, but after a bit more riding through the beautiful countryside here the first big climb begins in earnest up to Cutcombe.
It's a very steep lane to slog up and I'm soon coursing with sweat as it leads up and up, to finally dip down to the crossroad at Wheddon Cross.
I turn on to the B3224 here as it ploughs its way across the heart of Exmoor. It's some beautiful riding with views of rolling hills covered in farmlands and forests as another hill leads up and then down to Exford, where I roll over the River Exe.
Fans of etymology will probably have realised this river is the source of the region's name - the hilly moorlands around the origin of the river.
From Exford, it's slogging up more hills to rise up over 1300ft above sea level, making it one of the higher points of elevation through my journey. It's certainly making me feel it!
The summits are broad at least, giving me some good riding once up each hill, and I can chug along quite happily with the gorgeous views around me after each climb.
The miles get peddled through as road carries on through Simonsbath and some more steep climbing at Swincombe, before it turns on to the A399 to reach Blackmoor Gate.
The roads alternative between being lined with hedges to being enclosed by mossy stone walls, and tunnels of trees overhead. Combined with glimpses of the sunny hills past gates and gaps in the foliage, it's a compelling ride.
I stick with the A399 for now as it begins a long winding descent down out of the hills towards the sea once more. The traffic isn't too bad currently and I het to enjoy a nice easy ride down to the beach at Combe Martin after all the hard work so far.
After a short break here, it's back to the climbs again as I follow the road around to join back up with Cycle Route 51 as it passes through the beautiful village of Berrynarbor, and then begins another big climb up and over Hagginton Hill.
Cresting the hill after a lot of work, I have a view of the hills around Ilfracombe before speeding down the leafy lanes into the town itself.
Ilfracombe seems to be composed entirely of hills as well alas, which means more tough going as I work my way back uphill once more to stop off at a local supermarket for a quick resupply and to take stock.
I set off from Minehead a little late today with the intent of not having too full a day of hard work, and it's pushing into the evening, so I'm pretty happy with having made my way across the big hills today in fairly reasonable time.
I have a short scout around for a spot to rest up, which of course means riding up some more hills, but eventually return to the first possibility that caught my eye on the outskirts of town.
With the forecast for tomorrow being some heavy rains in the morning, I've got a nice patch of trees to shelter beneath for now. I'll see how things look in the daylight!
TTFN!

3, 15, and 16! :D
Ooouh, these are fun! :)
3. What's your dream city to live in?
I have so many answers with a lot of nuance that won't fit here, so have a short list: Berrynarbor, England (it's in Devon, on the coast, tiny little village) Hallstatt, Austria (an absolute fairy tale on a mountain lakeside) Somewhere in BC where my bestie and I/our SOs can live our best witchy forest lady lives with chickens and sheep and a garden and cats and all that. 15. Do you think there's life outside planet earth? How do you imagine it?
I think the probability that we're not alone is greater than being the only spinning space rock in the universe with critters. Now, that's assuming that we define Life similarly. Extraterrestrial life, of course, very likely may not be carbon-based.
But, once upon a time, I had a thought to make a children's book regarding this topic and was designing apex predators that "evolved" to work best in their environments, and this ran off the idea that Tardigrades were the original life form. They had their own water planet where they grew to the size of whales. 16. Have you ever owned a house plant? Is it still alive? Did you talk to it? Did you name it?
Yes, LOL NO, yes, and yes. I've had a few house plants and I kill them all. I seem to do best with green things I can stick in the actual ground. Those need so much less care.
The one plant that had a name was a succulent offshoot from a friend's plant and its name was, I think, Samson. And hers was Delilah. Or it was the other way around.

Just finished the edit of Letty & Andrew's wedding and was struck by the 'Gone with the Wind' quality of this image! Shot on my Olympus Pen F (which has become part of my wedding armoury), I lit this with a Westcott IceLight, using the 45mm f1.8. The memory card was a Delkin Black ( of course!) and my feet were kept warm and comfortable with my Horizon socks! Hey, so I made a podcast for a university assignment.
It’s about my family’s paranormal experience when they went on holiday to Devon in 1997.
If you take a listen, feedback would be really greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

Combe Martin Devon
WHERE I HAVE BEEN 268 Combe Martin is a lovely resort in north Devon. My wife and I have visited this village on a number of occasions in the past and, in 1999, we stayed at the Sandy Cove hotel on the outskirts of Combe Martin. Nearby are Little Hangman and Great Hangman - my wife and I walked from Combe Martin towards these cliffs on earlier visits (1980s). Another place that we have walked to is the tranquil village of Berrynarbor.
