So much of what I'm proud of looses its oomph without buildup and context (posts the entire 14k word POW flashback arc from hell lololol) no. So I went with a far happier scene from the same book that I've been told twice was their favorite scene.

Context! Iris recruits her friend Bellamy for help getting ready for date night (he's a magician). This is in the aftermath of a big upset where Plot demanded he out himself to their team before strangers could beat him to it, and while he had nothing to worry about for 3/5ths of his friends (they love him and were more upset that they unknowingly made him feel like he had to lie)... one of them is proving difficult and Bel is putting it off for as long as he can.

Bastian told her to wear something comfortable, as Mine Na Masa was a humid city. Iris traded her fluffier sweaters for something more fitted. She switched from blue to green to purple in indecision over what would look best with her complexion, her hair, her eyes. She didn’t have much in the way of fancy clothing and panicked at the last minute.

Iris rushed to Bellamy for help and regretted bothering him the moment she saw how tired he looked—as downtrodden as he had the night prior. “Never mind, I can figure it out. It’s not that big a deal.”

“No, of course I’ll help.”

Iris had been holed up in her room all day doing homework in the final stretch before the holiday. She knew Eliott hadn’t left yet and could tell Reese was upset about something by the sound of her heavy footfalls up and down the corridor for hours but hadn’t had time to poke her head out. “Is everything okay?” she asked as he perused her closet. “Did you talk to Anaiya?”

“I did. It went well,” he said, distracted by an excessively fluffy sweater Iris never wore out but liked to lounge around in. “Reese found a hex on our guest and suspects involvement of Tet on Beque. She wants to go investigate.” He brushed the sweater aside and abandoned her closet altogether. “We’re supposed to have a meeting. Heads up.”

He let her waste his time on date clothes? “When?” This was not a good idea, and why Bastian thought it was eluded her. “Oh, forget the clothes. We can’t do this right now.”

Bellamy stopped her from leaving with an exasperated huff. “No, no, stay put. I told Bastian everything that happened. You should be able to go out and have a good time. All of this can wait.”

Iris wasn’t so sure. “I can’t go and pretend like everything’s fine.”

Bellamy insisted, blocking the doorway. “Please, go. Mine Na Masa’s a beautiful city and you’re not here to stress over all our shit when you don’t have to.” He nodded to her tablet and handwritten notes cast aside on her bed. “You’re supposed to worry about homework and what to wear on a date.”

“So are you,” Iris retorted before she could think. “I mean—you can’t surround yourself with all this stress all the time. Come with us,” she said, an idea forming. “You need a break, too.”

Bastian wouldn’t mind, she hoped. Bellamy shot her down before she could parse together how to ask him, shaking his head. “I have to take care of our guest.”

The vyetali. And Eliott, and Beque. Meanwhile Iris was making Bastian entertain her and play tour guide while he was likely needed on the ship.

“It’s important,” Bellamy insisted once more. “Just because it’s not life-threatening war and peril, doesn’t mean it’s not important. You should get to enjoy yourself. I promise there’ll be enough to worry about when you get back.”

Iris shifted her weight, still half-wanting to wriggle past him and call off the whole thing. Bellamy looked like he’d be terribly disappointed if she didn’t let him magic her new clothes. Iris sighed, “If you’re sure.”

Bellamy grinned and clapped. “Now let’s make you something to wear.”

She ended up with a simple blue-and-yellow dress that reminded her of a cloudless sky, with pockets and everything. He even made her a necklace to wear for the day, pulled straight from her imagination.

In the rush of it all Iris let herself focus only on being able to see a new city purely as a tourist. Bellamy assured her what felt like half a dozen more times that wanting it was okay. He was happy Bastian was able to show her.

It felt weird, doing something so normal. Bellamy shyly asked to help with her hair, apparently skilled in a plethora of Nanuian plaits. She did her own makeup as he curiously picked through her polishes.

“Do you not have polish on Nanaau?”

“Ours didn’t look like this,” he’d said, eyeing sparkly pink in bewildered fascination. “Do they come in black?”

If he wanted black, she’d get him black. Every smile and laugh made her heart sing. Reese wasn’t going to do these kinds of things with her, like having a five-minute discussion on which shade of blue was the best against her red, or if her makeup was too gaudy or just right.

Ada used to. Evie would bring home entire storage tubs worth of makeup samples and she’d always invite Ada over to ‘test’ them for the clients Evie never had. She didn’t expect Bellamy to fill that vacuum, soapboxing about how Nanaau had forty different shades of black and none of them went together.

“This isn’t… strange, for you?” she asked, twisting to see him better. “Doing all this?”

He hesitated and shied away from fixing her hair like someone would burst through the wall shrieking, “Fraud!”

“No?” he asked, wringing his hands in his lap. “If you don’t mind? I still like doing things like this, I just… don’t.”

“I wanted to ask, and please tell me if I’m overstepping, but your rings, like Jinji?” Iris did her best to sound conversational, but at her words, the air grew a little colder. She didn’t think he realized he was doing it. But that he was doing it, all tense and fidgety. She wanted to make sure he knew he could be himself around her, even if he still chose not to.

“I’ve worn one before, and I felt everything, like I was in someone else’s skin. So I guess… is that just random or do you keep her around on purpose?” Pretending to be Jinsin, acutely aware of what being a man felt like for those few hours, that was an experience Iris wasn’t keen on repeating.

Bellamy shrugged noncommittally and answered with each word slow and deliberate. “Vyetali aren’t… like yassir. In passing, it might look like it, but there’s so much, like—” He cut himself off and sighed, irritated.

“You don’t have to explain yourself, just—if you wanted to. You can.”

“The point is,” he said, slowly feeling out the words, “my ‘male’ rings aren’t any more comfortable to be stuck in than my ‘female’ rings. Either way, they’re someone, something, I’m not. They each just demand and permit different expectations.”

“Then… you want us to use ‘they’ for our guest. Do you want us to use ‘they’ for you?”

This, it seemed, was a sore subject. His face pinched, expression souring. “If you dressed like a man because you like the clothes, would you call yourself he?”

“No.” Iris didn’t know what it was like on Nanaau. He was looking at her like she was going to shoo him from her room in disgust.

He brushed her off with a mumbled apology Iris didn’t know what for. Iris dug around for the color she never used because it was too dark for her. “Here, we have time and I’m really good at making it clean.” She showed him a purple that looked black until the light hit it. “Let me do this for you.”

Bellamy balled his fists protectively and leaned away. “Bastian will notice,” he said. “Thank you, but no.”

“Every single member of Dalliance wears crazy colors and he likes them,” Iris argued.

“Dalliance?”

“Never mind—” Iris swept the unused bottles aside. “I'm not going to tell you to just be yourself and ignore everyone else ‘cause I know it's never that simple. But if Bastian is the only one you’re worried about, I think we can all handle him and his opinions.”

He mumbled unintelligibly and rubbed his neck. Iris was sure she had ruined his good mood and had no idea how to fix it. “It’s hard living here,” he mumbled. “You’re caught between worlds, either one or the other and that’s not me. Here it’s excuses and justification and proving yourself over and over again.”

“Do you want me to talk to him—”

“No.” He sighed, apologetic. “No. Don’t put yourself between us. And turn around so I can finish your hair.”

Reluctantly, Iris did. “Can I ask what Nanaau was like?”

He mumbled a no. “Some other time? Today is supposed to be fun, let’s not ruin it.”

Iris wasn’t feeling up for going anywhere after hearing that. Something tapped her arm and she looked down at the purple polish bottle. “If it’ll help you feel better,” he invited, “Bastian’ll be gone anyway.”

If even something as small as this gave him back a piece of what he’d lost, Iris wanted to help. “If you think my colors are bright, you should see the stuff Ada wears.”

Iris let herself prattle on, managing to make him laugh a few times. She buffed and filed and painted with meticulous care. “There,” she beamed, admiring her work.

Bellamy turned his hands over and back and gave a lopsided smile. “Couldn’t do better myself.”

“I consider myself quite an artist in tiny paintings, thank you very much,” Iris boasted. She convinced him to let her do something with his hair, too, since they had time. She fished out a gold headband and set it just so and leaned back to see properly. “You know, screw what Bastian thinks. You look awesome.”

He blushed and looked away, changing the subject with a nod to her door. “Bastian’s almost ready, I think. Don’t want to be late for whatever he has planned.”

Iris could not convince him to keep the headband and thought she’d at least fish for details from Bastian inconspicuously. Bellamy knew him far better than she did, but maybe there was an easier resolution than he thought. She snapped her fingers and pointed, plans already forming. “When I get back, you and I are going shopping and I’m gonna treat you to a Nadovan spa night. No excuses.”

Lelu glowing, he bit his lip to try and hide a smile and shrugged. “You don’t have to.”

“No excuses. Unless you’re allergic to any of this. That’s important.” His hair was slightly longer than hers. She could braid it if he wanted, like she used to do with Ada. They would take turns blindfolded attempting to give makeovers that turned out ghastly.

“I’ll see what I can do,” he said, and turned her head one last time to nitpick before handing her a mirror.

It was loose, simple, and intentionally messy, something Iris couldn’t pull off on the best of days. “Thank you.”

Bellamy gave her an encouraging smile and left her to get dressed.
