Latest job hunting bullshit: I saw a job advertised on google for the local council. The options given to apply were two mass job listing sites (think Monster and Indeed). I HATE applying through websites like that so I decided to go to the council website instead.
Except...the job isn't there.
I found this sus so the next morning I rang the council directly and asked if this was a fake job listing from someone trying to use the council's name. They confirmed it was and that they had never listed it, and that any jobs legitimately advertised by the council would be on the official council website and no where else.
These big fucking job application websites are all trying to data mine and steal your personal info and it should be illegal. One of them even asked me to upload a picture of my face and I noped right out of there.

The images on that post were hidden for awhile and literally just came back today. No one was "still seeing them" they just got unhidden, and it took quite awhile for that.
Actually I caught them visible literally when the news first broke of them being taken down so yeah again maybe this website that is infamous for being broken as hell is just broken as hell, and attributing everything to malice makes you into a bitter person who jumps at shadows. Hope this helps bye 💖

Hey guys, I'm just inputting a paper that discusses the use of osteological 3D scans of human remains here (because of the history of bone stealing scandals that this website has):
Interaction with human remains has been a long-standing & I'm glad if interacting with these models sparks anyone's interest in medical or osteological 3D imagining! It's a relatively new field that's exciting & developing fast. But in these cases it's best to also keep in mind the ethical issues related to the field that most people are not necessarily aware of, such as who are these scans from, how old are the remains, have the people given consent for the scans & where are these scans from geographically. The scans are not even necesarily from people, the scans might just be artistic renditions of bones or other organs. These are a variety of reasons why these scans exist, ranging from educating medical or anthropological students to having information from publicly-funded studies available to said public. The paper I've linked above has a useful set of guidelines about 3D scans that are very interesting to read about :)
Tl;dr: I'd urge people to read more about the ethics of 3D scans of human remains & proceed with those in mind! Please remember to remain respectful if the scans are from deceased people.
i feel like the knowledge that there are some medical databases with free-to-use 3D scans of various human organs available for 3D printing would have drastically reduced tumblrs amount of bone stealing scandals. plus you can make ones that glow in the dark.

if I've learned anything from grad school it's to check your sources, and this has proven invaluable in the dozens of instances when I've had an MBA-type try to tell me something about finances or leadership. Case in point:
Tumblr media
Firefox serves me clickbaity articles through Pocket, which is fine because I like Firefox. But sometimes an article makes me curious. I'm pretty anal about my finances, and I wondered if this article was, as I suspected, total horseshit, or could potentially benefit me and help me get my spending under control. So let's check the article in question.
It mostly seems like common sense. "...track expenses and income for at least a month before setting a budget...How much money do I have or earn? How much do I want to save?" Basic shit like that. But then I get to this section:
Tumblr media
This sounds fucking made up to me. And thankfully, they've provided a source to their claim that "research has repeatedly shown" that writing things down changes behavior. First mistake. What research is this?
Tumblr media
Forbes, naturally, my #1 source for absolute dogshit fart-sniffing financial schlock. Forbes is the type of website that guy from high school who constantly posts on linkedin trawls daily for little articles like this that make him feel better about refusing to pay for a decent package for his employees' healthcare (I'm from the United States, a barbaric, conflict-ridden country in the throes of civil unrest, so obsessed with violence that its warlords prioritize weapons over universal medical coverage. I digress). Forbes constantly posts shit like this, and I constantly spend my time at leadership seminars debunking poor consultants who get paid to read these claims credulously. Look at this highlighted text. Does it make sense to you that simply writing your financial goals down would result in a 10x increase in your income? Because if it does, let me make you an offer on this sick ass bridge.
Thankfully, Forbes also makes the mistake of citing their sources. Let's check to see where this hyperlink goes:
Tumblr media
SidSavara. I've never heard of this site, but the About section tells me that Sid is "a technology leader who empowers teams to grow into their best selves. He is a life-long learner enjoys developing software, leading teams in delivering mission critical projects, playing guitar and watching football and basketball."
That doesn't mean anything. What are his LinkedIn credentials? With the caveat that anyone can lie on Linkedin, Mr. Savara appears to be a Software Engineer. Which is fine! I'm glad software engineers exist! But Sid's got nothing in his professional history which suggests he knows shit about finance. So I'm already pretty skeptical of his website, which is increasingly looking like a personal fart-huffing blog.
The article itself repeats the credulous claim made in the Forbes story earlier, but this time, provides no link for the 3% story. Mr. Savara is smarter than his colleages at Forbes, it's much wiser to just make shit up.
HOWEVER. I am not the first person to have followed this rabbit hole. Because at the very top of this article, there is a disclaimer.
Tumblr media
Uh oh!
Sid's been called out before, and in the follow up to this article, he reveals the truth.
Tumblr media
You can guess where this is going.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So to go back to the VERY beginning of this post, both Pocket/Good Housekeeping and Forbes failed to do even the most basic of research, taking the wild claim that writing down your budget may increase your income by 10x on good faith and the word of a(n admittedly honest about his shortcomings) software engineer.
Why did I spend 30 minutes to make a tumblr post about this? Mostly to show off how smart I am, but also to remind folks of just how flimsy any claim on the internet can be. Click those links, follow those sources, and when the sources stop linking, ask why.

I agree with OP, and honestly what needs to happen is for sites other than Ao3 (who is doing amazing) to implement better search functions. And for art sites to implement the tagging system the boorus have.
Sometimes I just want to look for a variety, a grab bag of works. See if something stands out and catches my interest to ooh and ahh at. Say, robot fucking. I go onto Ao3 and search for it. Huh. 90% of what comes up is Transformers fic. I have nothing against Transformers fic I enjoy it when I'm in the mood, but I wanted a bunch of different options within this category to choose from. I put "Transformers" into Ao3's "exclude" field, then the next two most popular fandoms in that category, and then get exactly what I want. I see a nice saucy anime fic and read it.
I go over to Reddit to view some art. I go to a robotfucker subreddit. 90% of it is conventionally cute girl robots, and I want to see what artists with different tastes are up to. I try to click on one of the flairs the subreddit uses. It returns no results, despite the fact that I have seen posts that use it. I try to use the search bar. I get a tiny selection of ''masc'' robots because very few people tag their posts with keywords. I can't figure out how to display older, "archived" posts, because there isn't an obvious "advanced search" function.
I go to Tumblr. The search feature doesn't work, and half the time the site won't show me "adult" tags even though I have told it I am okay with seeing that kind of post. I check Deviantart. Its search used to be okay but now returns less and less of what I ask it for, and many artists have fled due to policy changes. I check the various booru sites. Very little has been added this month, despite there being countless artists online posting work. Twitter gives me the finger when I so much as look at its search bar.
I've noticed that the only time I get frustrated with 90% of [art category] being [specific idea] is when there isn't a decent search/filter function available where I'm looking, and I imagine most of the people complaining about the "fic market" don't realize there's a better way to describe/solve their problem.
Which they should figure out, both for the peace of mind of the artists, and because the more people demand better search, the more pressure there is for various website staff to make it. Which we know can be done because it has been accomplished before.
ok, because i just saw a terrible take, i feel compelled to say that there is no "fic market" to "oversaturate" in fandom. good gravy.
