It’s understandable to want to help troubled kids. But the evidence simply isn’t there that unproven drugs and surgeries are what they need.
In our drive to eliminate health inequities, my fellow liberal Democrats and I are eager to help children who identify as transgender. This compassionate urge has led our state, Oregon, to fast-track Medicaid coverage of medical transition services for kids, including puberty-blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgical removal of breasts and genitals. Yet I’m deeply concerned that in the push for equity, Oregon has ignored evidence, to the point of jeopardizing children’s health. I know from experience that my state can do better to ensure that kids get medically necessary care.
Oregon has long been a national and even international model for evidence-based medicine. I personally encountered my state’s strong commitment to medical science after my two young sons were diagnosed with autism in the late 2000s. At the time, few autism treatments were covered by insurance or Medicaid anywhere in America, so I worked with state leaders and a broader coalition to right that wrong. One key hurdle was Oregon’s Health Evidence Review Commission (HERC), which determines what treatments Medicaid covers and strongly influences the coverage of private health-insurance plans.
HERC held us to its customary high standards for quality of evidence. We organized testimony from some of the world’s leading experts on autism and submitted reams of peer-reviewed journal articles, all of which were rigorously scrutinized by HERC’s experts. We prevailed only after the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality published a groundbreaking systematic review that supported the effectiveness of behavioral interventions for autistic children. In 2014, HERC approved Medicaid coverage of such treatments for children like mine. HERC’s wise focus on evidence steered patients and physicians away from risky and unproven interventions that were popular at the time, some of which, such as chelation therapy, reportedly killed autistic children. To this day, I’m grateful for the commission’s high standards.
Yet HERC hasn’t upheld the same standards for gender medicine. To its credit, the commission began looking at this issue in 2012, before gender dysphoria was on the social radar. At the time, based primarily on studies of adults over the age of 30, it concluded that there was “very poor evidence” of benefits of medical interventions for patients. Even so, HERC decided in 2014 to provide comprehensive Medicaid coverage for puberty-blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgeries for anyone, including children, who identifies as transgender. In a strange departure from its own rules, HERC didn’t run these policies through its evidence-based-guidelines subcommittee. In my fight for autism coverage, that subcommittee was the most important part of the process.
I’m confident the commissioners were trying to help people in what was then a unique situation. At the time, in 2015, the state estimated that very few patients would choose medical transition: according to NPR, “at least 175” patients per year, of all ages. NPR quoted HERC’s medical expert as estimating that the combined total cost for this coverage would be “up to $200,000 — for the whole state.” Yet by 2019, more than 7,500 Oregonians were receiving such treatment, at a cost of over $20 million per year. Based on my analysis of state data, hundreds of children have received some combination of puberty-blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgeries. None of these procedures have gone through clinical trials to demonstrate their safety and effectiveness, and in the case of hormones, children are receiving drugs that haven’t been approved for such use by the FDA.
Amid this exponential rise, HERC in 2023 commissioned a thorough review of the latest studies. The draft report, which I obtained via a freedom-of-information request, found that the evidence was still very limited. For youth, the investigators reported that they were unable to find any systematic reviews — the key evidence we had to provide for autism coverage — with “extractable data” showing benefits of transgender treatments for children. The report also noted that many lower-quality studies can’t be applied to patients who seek a rapid gender-affirming transition, which is typically the case with children. The report was essentially Oregon’s version of the Cass Report, which the United Kingdom released in April.
Yet Oregon’s report was never finalized, and HERC staff didn’t even present their draft to the body’s 13 commissioners. Instead, after the state passed a law requiring the coverage of “accepted standards of care” for transgender treatments, HERC quickly endorsed guidelines from an advocacy group — without any analysis of the contents. The guidelines are highly aggressive yet based on low-quality evidence. Today, preteen Oregonians can be put on powerful chemicals without FDA approval, before moving on to surgeries as adolescents. These interventions can irreversibly alter their bodies and leave them less likely or even unable to have children of their own later in life. The risks to their physical and mental health are high and, crucially, not justified by existing proof of benefit.
Equity cannot be achieved by ignoring evidence and stripping away consumer protections from historically underserved people. While I deeply sympathize with the goal of helping struggling kids, we can’t accept shortcutting medical ethics — and we didn’t accept it a decade ago, with autism coverage. The ethical path is for HERC to define “accepted standards of care” based on the best science. Medicine is supposed to follow the evidence because health and well-being hang in the balance. The stakes are especially high for children. If we truly want to be equitable, Oregon will stop undermining children’s right to evidence-based medical care.

While AGI remains a theoretical concept as of now, achieving it would mean creating machines capable of performing any intellectual task that a human can. 3. Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI)
ASI surpasses human intelligence and capabilities in all aspects. Before Tenochtitlan
Phastos along with our girls make up the ultimate STEM dream team that could literally achieve anything.
Phastos is physics, technology, astronomy, mathematics, architecture, and engineering; Kaet is magic, medicine, biochemistry, healthcare, and anatomy & physiology; Sephia is agriculture, zoology, biology, chemistry, food science, and environmental sciences
But whenever Phastos gets stuck on a math problem, the first person he’ll go to would be Sephia
Oh yeah, this pink flower goddess is huge math nerd. Her mind is wired a bit differently from others, and numbers just make sense to her.
And while sometimes her short attention span will get the best of her, when she is in the zone, she is in the ZONE
One time she and Phastos were stuck on a math theorem during the Renaissance, and didn’t sleep for about a week straight.
Kaet ended up using her shadows to swaddle them straight jacket style for them to sleep, literally to only wake up 3 hours later with Sephia poking her cheek to wake her up to tell her that they proved it.
But Kaet is also the biggest hypocrite because she will research and dissect organisms for days on end with Phastos too.
These three invented the term “insomnia.”
Phastos does typically have a healthy sleeping schedule unless he is really focused, Sephia is the same in a slightly more extreme manner, but Kaet will deliberately not sleep until she has found her answer or satisfied with her work.
Everyone wants her to sleep, and her reply will probably be something along the lines of “can’t die, won’t sleep, suck my magic dick.”
The only one that can really manage to get her to sleep at times is Druig, and that’s during the times he has to physically pry the tools out of her hands and strip her down and wrangle her into a shower before forcing her to cuddle with him to sleep
He’ll also make sure to sneak in some sexy times with her in the shower for good measure
Honestly, Kaet lowkey really loves the attention and will purposely stay up to late just to rile Druig up
Listen, she can't help it if all that pent up energy transitions to mind-blowing sex
But she also wants to find out the physical limits of her own bodily functions by staying awake as long as possible, and to see if she’ll eventually hallucinate.

Once it got so bad that Sephia made a sleeping powder of dried gardenias and valerian to blow in Kaet’s face. She immediately conked out, and sleep for a solid week.
When Ajak confronted Sephia, her only response was so fucking chaotic and unhinged.
“Oh, don’t worry, Kaety’s not poisoned. She’s just drugged.”
And everyone just stared at her while Sephia was smiling like there was nothing wrong in the world.
On the plus side, she monitored Kaet’s vitals and functions in her coma and was able to get some really great data on the benefits of those plants used for anti-anxiety and insomnia medication
This launched an era of the two gals cultivating and drying various plants to be used as medicine for various ailments and even pain relievers
They definitely used the other Eternals to test the drugs (mostly Ikaris) and some of the side effects were…interesting to say the least
One-time, Ikaris was so high off this preliminary version of anesthesia from poppy seeds that he might have gone on a 3-hour spiel about how Sephia’s hair was so super pretty, and how it smelled so nice, and how it looked so soft, and how he would cut his own ear if it meant he could see her boobs and cu-
Don’t worry the drugs kicked in again before he could finish (in more ways than one lol)
Speaking of Ikaris, while Kaetlyn is the most protective over she sweet Sephia, Phastos is a VERY close second
This inventor man does not believe for a second that this puffed-up chested man with his dumb quaffed hair is good enough for Sephia
Sephia would be the only Eternal who is genuinely interested and fascinated by Phastos' ideas and inventions, and will ask very good questions
And he's beyond grateful for her
On another note, just imagine the dread that overtook Phastos when Ajak basically assigned him on Kaet & Sephia watch duty.
Poor man just wanted Arishem to send him to another planet right then and there.
So…when Phastos learned that Ajak died, he was extremely sad…but mostly terrified because this meant only one thing now
HE had to be the mother figure of both Kaetlyn and Sephia

Fun fact about Sephia: sometimes she will be really quiet, and her mind will be like a million miles away, and then she will think of the most random stuff and start giggling like crazy
Phastos actually thought she was possessed by a demon and wanted Kaet to perform an exorcism…only to remember that Kaetlyn is even crazier
Phastos has seen Kaet do the Naruto run before it was even a thing at the most random times and always with the most chaotic crackling laughter the world has ever known
Kaet has purposely summoned and captured the weirdest monsters and ghosts FOR THE SOLE PURPOSE of freaking out Phastos
Migraines have become a good portion of this man’s daily lifestyle
But luckily, Sephia is there to save his mental health by brewing the most calming tea and shoving a super fluffy animal for him to cuddle with whilst asking him questions about his inventions
The three came up with their own STEM TRIO manifesto around the same time the Magna Carta came out
Phastos and Sephia are each other's worst enable when it comes to missing social engagements because they will literally come up with the worst excuses for their absence when facing Ajak's interrogation
"Phastos, why were you not at the party last night?"
"I-" "He had to help me make a contraption to help an aging ape give birth to a mutated baby"
"..." "..."
"What she said"
"Sephia, these celebrations are in your honor, it offends the chief if you do not make an appearance."
"Maybe the chief should stop mistreating his goats, and then maybe she would consider"
"Yeah! Tell 'em Phastos!"
Meanwhile, Kaetlyn and Druig are watching this entire exchange and feeding each other snacks as Kaet is sitting on Druig's lap
When Kaetlyn and Sephia left with Druig at Tenochtitlan, they secretly came back and begged Phastos to go with them as they were setting up the community
When Phastos refused, the three promised each other that they would always make sure to keep in contact with one another
Lordy Lord, pray for Ben when he's given the shovel talk by these two girls
Although in the end, they are like the sisters he's never had, and only Phastos is the one who is bothered (not really) by their constant unexpected visits
Modern Times:
When Phastos found Ben and started dating him, Kaetlyn and Sephia fully vetted the poor human
They remembered how broken and devastated their brother was in the aftermath of the Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and they were not about to let someone else hurt him
By the way, Kaetlyn and Sephia were the first Eternals to know Phastos was gay since they were the only ones he trusted to come out to
It was the same the other way around too
Phastos was the first one ever to help Sephia really understand her sexuality (demisexual) since she thought something was wrong with her since she had never really felt any sexual attraction like that to anyone ever in the 7,000 years she lived on Earth
She has tried throughout multiple occasions tried to have sex, but it never really worked out and she never felt those feelings associated with sexual attraction
For the longest time, she thought she was asexual until Ikaris turned out not to be dead from the sun, and she’s connected with him on a more emotionally intimate level than ever before, and now she’s feeling all these new feelings that are scaring the crap out of her
There were instances that she felt attraction and even had fantasies over certain fictional characters but she to experience something in her head as a fantasy as opposed to experiencing it in reality was a whole different topic of conversation
And she’s even experienced romantic feelings whenever she tried to put herself in relationships, but those romantic feelings only stayed romantic and she never felt any sexual feelings
So, when those new feelings emerged…a conference call was set up between the STEM Trio and it was a chaos call that was primarily about going over literature of the sexuality spectrum and the fluidity of identification
When Ikaris had trouble wrapping his head around it when Sephia came out to him, he ended up getting a whole explanation on it from Phastos and Kaet over Zoom
But yeah, these three are each other’s ride or die at any point of time
They literally choked down their hatred for this man so that their girl could have the chance to be in a happy relationship
On the plus side, these three always went to Pride together
Druig usually stayed at the Amazon during these events because he’s not a big fan of the crowds and despises the practice of rainbow capitalism
Once gay marriage was legalized, both Kaet and Sephia were the witnesses for Phastos and Ben’s courthouse wedding
Phastos DID try to hide Jack’s adoption…only for Sephia and Kaet to already be in the house when the couple brought him home for the first time and announce themselves as Jack’s godmothers
Their disappointment was imminent and their hearts could only be healed by holding their new godson
It’s just one heart attack after another for Phastos with these two girls around
Ben and Sephia get along so freaking well
They are constantly swapping recipes; Sephia crochets baby clothes and stuffed animals for Jack and Ben sends her the pictures; and whenever Phastos and Ben need a night out or are burned out, Sephia will be right there helping out
Sephia would be the one to tell Jack no matter what, he would always be perfect in her eyes, and teaches him that his differences from others are the things that would also turn into his strengths
Kaet is there bringing the chaos for baby Jack; she’s constantly popping her head into view when he least expects it and makes the sweetest giggles in the universe
One time, Phastos caught Kaet’s shadows tossing Jack in the air with him laughing without a care in world…he fainted
But Ben thought it was cute though so he was cool with it
But Kaet would also be the one to teach Jack the importance of staying true to yourself regardless of the pressure of whatever society may force upon him, and always encourages him to think like a mad genius
Seeing Phastos with his family gave Kaet the little push that made her realize that she really wants to start a family with Druig as well as helping her gain hope for humanity by just being around Ben and Jack
It had always been on the back of her mind, she always liked kids
But she had lost so much faith in humanity and the world around her that she was always putting it off
When she and Druig were pregnant, Kaet immediately set up a conference call with Sephia and Phastos to tell them before the rest of the eternals
When the twins (Laoise and Aisling) were born, Kaet asked Sephia and Phastos if they were willing to be the godparents (along with Makkari and Gilgamesh)
Phastos cried just as hard holding his baby goddaughters for the first time as he did when he first held baby Jack, and cried again when he held his godson a few years later
Phastos also became the godfather for Sephia’s and Ikaris’ kids (he also cried when he held all of their kids)
BTW remember Ikaris' drugged out confession from above?
You can bet your entire life savings that Phastos made sure to record every single glorious second of it and then played it Ikaris’ and Sephia’s wedding as part of his toast
Ikaris’ face turned so fucking red and he just wanted to DIE
Sephia thought it was super cute and funny and reassured him that he is the only one who has seen her boobs like that
There’s someone for everyone lol
Also, Phastos was the one to walk Sephia down the aisle since she looks up to him like he’s her tech-savvy older brother who will always teach her how to use her computer because she is terrible with tech
STEM trio became the STEM Parent Trio
When they get together, they trade gossip whilst sipping wine and watching Bluey and playing that fantasy game when you create a map using rice whilst cuddling with their Squishmallows
One-time all three got so plastered, they designed a whole-ass utopian city with modern technology whilst also being environmentally friendly and also filled with magic and affordable healthcare and reusable energy
Muffin reminds Phastos too much of Kaetlyn back in the old days and he straight up got a war flashback in “Faceytalk” and “The Sleepover”
All that being said and done, despite all the headaches and near heart attacks, there isn’t anything in the world Phastos would trade for Kaetlyn and Sephia; he loves his two crazy sisters more than anything
Whenever Halloween came, it became a tradition that Kaetlyn and Druig would go to Chicago so that Laoise and Aisling would go trick-or-treating with Jack
One year Aisling went as Silena Beauregard, Jack as Charles Beckendorf, and Laoise as Clarisse La Rue from Percy Jackson
Phastos made the lightning staff for Laoise to complete her costume
That was a mistake to say the least
But that’s a story for another time

Airia Q&A
Okay so, I recently did a Questions and Answers session about Airia on my Insta and I thought I could as well share the result here, since we got to see quite some tidbits of lore. I have put the majority of it under the cut because thing got long. Hope you enjoy! :D
Q: How do you feel about being a cyborg?
A: That is a difficult question. On one hand, this is a natural state for me. I have had cybernetics implanted on me since I was a baby. My formative years were filled with medical tests, procedures, and surgeries. I don't know any life or state of being that isn't this.
On the other hand, I have been modified, without my knowledge or consent. I know my life has not been 'normal'. For a long time, I didn't even know what 'normal' was. I only knew my own life. Once I gained access to online spaces and I learnt what life looked like for other people, however, it was like… My life could have been so different. I'm not certain if better or worse, but different.
I have nothing against being a cyborg in on itself. I just… wish it had been my choice. I wish shething about my life had been my choice, instead of the ones of others.
Q: Are you aware of who created you, and for what purpose?
A: I do. I live in the lab facilities with the people who made me. I see some of them more than the others, and a couple of them abandoned the project or were replaced when I was too young to remember, but I know who they are, even if, emotionally speaking, I'm not close to them.
The purpose of the project that made me was to test the limits of what cybernetics could do for humans. What it could enhance, what it could improve, what it could fix, what it could add… Because this project wasn't exactly legal and they had to keep my existence secret for a long time -and it was unlikely that they would be allowed another human subject even when it was revealed to the relevant institutions- I was a test subject for many different cybernetics, even when it didn't entirely make sense to add them together.
The enhanced senses, for example, I can perfectly understand the utility of. My eye colour, on the other hand, seems to be merely aesthetic. My artificial skin could be useful for certain jobs, as it's more heat and corrosion resistant than human skin… but my hair literally melts with enough heat or corrosion, so it's not a property I could make use of... And this is without getting into the risk vs benefits of most implants, specially the brain ones.
Q: How do you feel about your "creators" and the modifications they gave you?
A: The way I feel about my 'creators' is… complex.
I've read fiction about characters with similar experiences to mine: test subjects, cyborgs, androids… In these stories, they often rise up against their creators seeking vengeance. I find that, while some of my experiences are similar to those described in fiction, that isn't one of them.
I am not emotionally close to my developers. They have never acted as parental figures, nor mentors, nor friends (nurses and caretakers took some parts of these roles instead). If anything, the role they assumed was closer to that of doctors. And as they currently exclusively hold my medical data, they're the only ones that can provide treatment and maintenance to me. I am completely dependable on them for healthcare while they see me more as a science project than an individual. It's… not a good feeling. I don't necessarily want them harmed or punished like it's often shown in fiction, and I certainly do not want to be the one delivering that punishment… But I wish I had options other than being forced to rely on them. About the modifications, it bothers me that I never had any agency about it.
They started long before I could understand or consent to them. And as I grew, they didn't bother to change that either. Even when I started to make questions, their answers were always short and didn't dwell on details. I've never had any power to stop them.
There's many modifications about me that I don't understand why I've had. I can't be certain, since I don't have access to my own medical data, how many of those procedures and modifications were necessary or not, but I would presume a large amount of them weren't at all. I don't like that I have been changed without permission. I don't like that, by the time I could understand what they were doing to me, it was impossible to separate me from the cybernetics.
I hate not knowing my own brain, not having access to some of my own features or the data about how my body and implants work. I don't necessarily hate my cybernetics or current existence in on itself, but I do hate how they came to be. And not knowing how much of my own thoughts are feelings come from me and how many could come from the brain implants that my developers can control remotely without needing me to even be aware… It doesn't feel good at all.
Worst of all is, it's impossible to take some of the implants I have without risking irreparable damage or death. But I would like, at least, to be the owner of my own data, features, and processes, so that I could understand myself and not be further changed without my consent.
Q: Best and worst part(s) of being a cyborg?
A: The best thing about being a cyborg, huh? To be completely honest, I have rarely thought if the positives of it…
Perhaps how I can connect and communicate with people anywhere on the world by just thinking of it? But I can't help but think that much of the same result could be achieved with a smart phone and a stable connection to the internet (which I still need even if I just use my implants and no external devices).
Not only that, but it would be safer for me too. When someone connects to a public network, their device and the data stored in it might be at risk. If I did so, I might be putting my very self at risk -my implants have some of the stronger security systems to avoid any potential harm, but still.
The fact remains that I could still connect with other people through an external device without havin to worry about potential risks (which is mostly not an issue for me currently due to living in the lab facilities, which provide even more layers of security than my implants do… If any harm comes to me through remotely accessing my implants right now, the most likely is for it to come from the inside of the facilities).
The worst would be that I depend on the people who built me for their own purposes for maintenance and healthcare. My life literally depends on people who see me as a lab project more than they see me as a human being. And they have exclusive power over not only my body, but my mind too.
They can remotely access my implants. I can never know if they have changed something of who I am or not. I don't know where their modifications begin and I end. There's parts of myself that I don't even have access to, because they restricted it.
In other circumstances, if I held control over my own implants, if I had access to my own records, if I had more options for maintenance and healthcare and people couldn't access my implants remotely at any time… I think wouldn't be as uncomfortable with the way I exist in the manner I often do now.
Q: What are your five senses like? Are they the same as before the implants? (touch, smell, etc.)
Many implants I've had from an early enough age that I don't remember clearly what my life was like before them. But the implants definitely affect my senses.
My sight has been enhanced for as long as I can remember. I'm sure they let my sight develop naturally before modifying, but in my memories I've always had a sharp eye.
My hearing has also been enhanced. This I did notice, as it wasn't always as it is now. There was a lot of tweaking about it. For a while it was painful, or I couldn't properly process the sounds, when they first tried on the implants. Eventually, though, they found a way to make enhanced hearing work. I am very sensitive to sound now and do badly in loud spaces. My room is sound-proof and I often carry noise-cancelling headphones with me.
My smell is slightly enhanced, but not to the same level as my hearing is. I can identify smells better than the average, but it takes more of a conscious effort.
My taste hasn't been altered, to my knowledge. As far as I know, it's average.
My touch is actually less sensitive than normal, since the first layer of my skin is artificial. It doesn't take much sensitivity away though. Mostly it feels like being touched through cotton fabric. I've never enjoyed skin-to-skin contact much, so I do not mind this.
And although it isn't included in the 5 senses, I think it's worth it to talk about my sense of pain (nociception). Most of my pain receptors have been tampered with, artificially raising my pain threshold so I don't feel pain at all unless it's severe. This isn't me having learned to ignore it, I do mean it when I say I don't feel it at all. It is for this reason, since pain is an essential way our body communicates damage, that my artificial skin has iracutaneous light cells: they're programmed to light up in different patterns to communicate damage and sickness where pain cannot.
Q: Did you have to have implants replaced as you grew up? What was puberty like because of that?
A: I've had them fixed and maintained far more often than I've had them entirely replaced, but it has happened a few times.
I know now that my growth has been completely different to that of others. Sometimes, some parts of me were allowed to develop naturally, sometimes my growth was forcibly accelerated or slowed down instead. This affected my puberty as well, naturally. At first they waited for it to run its course, but in the end they decided to integrate implants to keep an artificially created hormonal balance.
Q: Would your skin and eyes be naturally be these colours? Or were your genetics consciously altered?
A: They would not. I do not have access to my own genetic data, but I know my colours would not be like this naturally.
My skin actually used to be pale and with warm undertones, and if I was exposed to sunlight more would have probably tanned to a light brown or beige. I'm unsure why they made my artificial skin paper-white, as not only is that not a natural skin colour, but it's also associated with the unnatural and scary. Perhaps my intracutaneous light cells work better with it?
My eyes would have probably been the very dark brown kind that people call black. I'm unsure how they changed them, but now I can change their colour at will, although they can always change on their own to match the lights on my skin when I'm sick. I do not know why their default colour is blue and magenta. I don't even know if that was made on purpose or not. However, changing them to another colour for long periods of time quickly becomes straining, so I don't do that often.
My natural hair, however, would still be black if I had it. I was born with very black hair and, once again, it's unclear to me why they had to change it for this artificial one I now have.
Q: Do you get to choose your hair and nail implants? Can you change them for fun or just when damaged?
A: I don't, unfortunately. They're supposed to be permanent and only changed -with identical sets- when damaged. I don't think my developers had 'fun' in mind when they made me, even when we have proof humans have been modifying their appearance since they were humans.
I can, however, paint my nails and apply 'fake nails' over them to change their appearance. My hair, on the other hand, it's pretty much unstylable. It will melt if enough heat is applied to it, and cutting it destroys its core, so aside from tying it up or leaving it loose there's not much I can do with it.
Q: Have you ever tried bubble tea? Which one(s) do you prefer? Or, if not, what drinks do you enjoy?
A: I haven't, but I would like to. I believe I would enjoy it, as I already love tea.
From what I've seen there's a great variety of bubble teas, but I would probably try the more classic options first, although I'm also interested in the ones with fruit.
As I said, I enjoy tea, black and green specially, fruit and/or floral mixes as well.
I also enjoy milkshakes, with chocolate milkshake being my favourite.
Q: Favourite weather/season
A: I like winter and early spring the most. The lab facility I live in has central heating and cooling systems, so the temperature is always kept stable on the inside, but I love the cool air from the outside.
Winter feels very calm and peaceful as a whole, everything and everyone seem to be more quiet during winter. And I enjoy the snowy landscapes.
Early spring feels nice, when sprouts and blooms slowly overtake the white of snow. There isn't much colour in the lab facilities, so it feels good that that isn't always the case for the world outside.
As for weather, I prefer cool, dry weather and a clear sky. I function and feel the best in it.
Q: Do you like music? What kind?
A: I do enjoy music. I love calm instrumentals the most. Symphonics. Music that follows a clear and structure. I find it grounding when there's too much going on, to focus on something small and predictable.
But I also enjoy music with lyrics, specially if they have a message that I resonate with. I find it hard to identify my feelings and put my experiences into words. It's sometimes easier to recognize them while relating to a song.
That said, there's also music I do not enjoy at all. Anything too fast, or where there's too much playing at once, I find it deeply overwhelming.
Q: Does she have a surname? (And is it Starset XD)
[Note: answering this as an author and not in lieu of Airia, since this question is directed to me rather than her]
A: She doesn't, actually xD
For a long time, she didn't even have an actual name, just an alphanumeric code identifying her as a specific project within the lab.
Eventually, one of her caretakers named her Airia and her developers kind of rolled with it because it was easier and quicker to refer to her that way. Airia low-key thinks of her alphanumeric code as her surname (sad), but she might need to have a real one soon, now that her existence is slowly being made more and more public (she was kept in secret for quite some years, the project that made her what she is not being entirely legal, and the wider public only learnt about it a few years ago). I wonder if she'd be able to choose her own surname, if that's the case; she hasn't had the chance to choose much about herself as it is…

As a STEM students how can you uphold physical fitness in influencing the future?
Being a STEM student, I see the strong connection between staying fit and making a positive impact on the future. Even though my focus is on science, technology, engineering, and math, I understand how important physical fitness is for a healthy mind and body specially for us a stidy under the strand of STEM.
for inclusion as i varsity player in our school I've learned that regular exercise boosts brain function, helping with things like memory and concentration. This means that by staying physically active, I'm actually enhancing my ability to solve complex problems and analyze data.
For me being a badminton player as a STEM student without a doubt is a winning combination for specially in future fitness. The sport not only provides physical benefits but also enhances cognitive abilities and fosters qualities crucial for success. It's a holistic approach that aligns with the pursuit of a balanced and healthy lifestyle.
Looking at the bigger picture, a society that values physical health can reduce the strain on healthcare systems. STEM Students like me can work together to find ways to prevent health issues before they happen. Using data analysis and technology, we can identify health trends and develop solutions to promote healthier lifestyles.
Sustainability is also crucial in both STEM and fitness. By considering eco-friendly practices in technology and promoting positive initiatives, we can create a future where health and environmental awareness go hand in hand.
To sum it up, not just as a STEM student but also a Varsity Player, my goal is not only to stay physically fit for myself but to use my knowledge to contribute to a future where everyone sees the importance of a healthy lifestyle. I want to be part of a positive change that makes physical fitness a shared responsibility, benefiting individuals and society as a whole.

Calls to ‘trust the science’ need to be treated with severe scepticism. This was brought home by the recent debunking of a widely cited 2020 study in the prestigious journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). The article and the attention it attracted illustrate how the authority of science can be used to mislead the public.
The study at issue – entitled ‘Physician-patient racial concordance and disparities in birthing mortality for newborns’ – examined 1.8million childbirths in Florida between 1992 and 2015. It purported to show that black newborns died more frequently when cared for by white doctors than they do when cared for by black doctors. This led the researchers to conclude that ‘black physicians systemically outperform their colleagues when caring for black newborns’.
Most major media outlets interpreted this as a prime example of systemic racism in American healthcare. Some even wondered if perhaps white doctors were sabotaging the treatment of black infants. The findings were so shocking that Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson quoted the research in her dissent from the 2023 US Supreme Court ruling that ended affirmative action in higher education. Also in the affirmative-action case, several prestigious medical groups, including the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics, filed an amicus brief containing the following conclusion: ‘For high-risk black newborns, having a black physician is tantamount to a miracle drug.’
The only problem is that the findings of the study were completely untrue.
The reason for the disparity in newborn deaths was not due to the race of the physicians or to systemic racism, but to a flawed study design. After four years, a second group of researchers finally revisited the study data and found the original researchers did not account for difference in birth weight, a key determinant of mortality in neonates. While uncommon, low birth weight occurs more frequently in black newborns and accounts for a disproportionate number of neonatal deaths.
Because these infants were usually treated at major medical centres, where most of the physicians are white, deaths in the original study attributed to white physicians were actually the result of their caring for sicker patients. After controlling for low birth weight, the difference in care between black and white physicians effectively disappeared.
This study was fundamentally flawed. When studying mortality in neonates, low birth weight is a key determinant. This is paediatrics 101. It is essential that low birth weight be factored in. Yet at every stage of the scientific publication process for this study, the role of low birth weight was ignored.
The problem began with the original authors. Before cause-and-effect conclusions can be drawn, any study of the relationship between mortality and care must account for severity of illness – in this case, low birth weight. For example, emergency-room patients with head trauma who receive CT scans have higher mortality than those patients who don’t have CT scans. This is because only those with more severe trauma are referred for scans. The higher mortality among CT-scanned patients has nothing to do with the CT scan itself.
In this case, the authors never even mentioned low birth weight in the article’s section on the limitations of the findings. One could give them the benefit of the doubt. After all, every researcher at one time or another has neglected an obvious variable. But such an obvious omission raises the suspicion that they wanted to obtain a desired result – that is, they wanted to demonstrate systemic racism in American healthcare. As Nobel laureate Richard Feynman once cautioned, ‘you must not fool yourself, and you are the easiest person to fool’.
At the pre-peer-review stage, the journal editors also failed to note the absence of low birth weight as a key factor in neonatal mortality. The PNAS editors who initially received the article are the pinnacle of scientific authority. They are all top scientists in their respective fields at major academic centres. This particular journal even includes a statistical review committee, which looks at methodology and statistics. It should have flagged the glaring omission of low birth weight immediately and sent the article back to the authors for revision before the next step of sending the article to outside peer reviewers.
And what about those outside peer reviewers? The whole job of these subject-specific experts is to read with a gimlet eye, looking for errors, contradictions, biases and flaws in study design. Not infrequently, they recommend rejecting publication of an article on the thinnest of pretexts. Overlooking severity of illness is not a minor mistake. It is a major study-invalidating error. It is almost unbelievable the peer reviewers did not reject the article on that basis. It raises the question of whether they wanted to see the publication of an example of systemic racism at the expense of a careful critique of the data.
After the outside peer reviewers, the article would have come back to the journal editors, in the post-peer-review phase. The original journal editors therefore had one more chance, with the help of the expert peer review comments, to consider whether the article should be published. Why in this case didn’t they ask what caused the excess mortality when white physicians cared for the infants? Did white doctors deny black newborns access to intensive care or ventilators or antibiotics? (These cases weren’t surgical, so surgical skill was not an issue.) In addition, if you believe in systemic racism of physicians then the differences in mortality were considerable (absent the consideration of low birth weight). They were almost too good (or bad) to be true. As the journal editors surely would have known, when data are too good to be true, they probably are not true.
After publication, the article would have been seen by scientific journalists. They are trained to evaluate and interpret science for the public. Journalists who read the initial article should have identified right away there was no control for severity of illness. Their failure to notice this suggests either incompetence or confirmation bias (that is, they believe so strongly that healthcare is systematically racist, this is precisely the result they expected to see.) If they did notice and did not report it, that is even worse. Did anyone in the community of scientific journalists really want to challenge the study?
After the scientific journalists come the lay journalists. When this study was reported in the lay press, especially in connection with the Supreme Court affirmative-action decision, it emphasised the disparity between the quality of black and white physicians and the huge effect on mortality in black newborns, which was going on for nearly a quarter of a century. Such an appalling situation would surely have been obvious to nurses, hospitals, patients and families well before the publication of this paper. Yet no journalists asked why no one had come forward in all that time to expose it.
If this debacle teaches us anything, it is to be far more sceptical when faced with studies of this kind. In one of his legendary lectures on science, Richard Feynman said that the layman has ‘as much right as anyone else, upon hearing about the experiments – but be patient and listen to all the evidence – to judge whether a sensible conclusion has been arrived at’. He added: ‘The experts who are leading you may be wrong.’
Remember this episode whenever someone tosses out the phrases ‘trust the science’ or its close cousin, ‘evidence-based’. This may be an attempt to pass off a political view as a scientific fact. Science is an ever-changing endeavour, difficult to interpret, subject to manipulation and susceptible to personal bias, as the 2020 PNAS study illustrates.
When it comes to science, it’s best to channel your inner Ronald Reagan, ‘Trust, but verify’.
