Y/N: Hold on. You seriously thought giving Ben a crash course in villainy meant... singing and dancing? [Gives Evie, Carlos, and Jay a deadpan stare]
Evie: It made sense at the time!
Y/N: You're all hopeless. You should've just taught him to shove someone off the pier or claim he owned me in public.
Carlos: Honestly, that would've saved a lot of time.

Hehe...it's fun re-watching Descendants and knowing in this moment, Ben's no longer under the love spell. He's smiling like that at Mal because he's that happy to see her.
The stunned looks on Belle and Beast's faces are a bonus.
Also...why the hell are Beast and Ben wearing matching suits here?! Literally the only difference is the fact that Beast is wearing a tie and Ben isn't!
#disney's descendants#disney descendants#ben florian#king ben#ben son of belle and beast#seriously though if we don't get this boy into clothing that isn't suit related...#by the way to almost every Descendants reactor on YouTube I'm gonna need you to lower the Ben disliking!#descendants spoilers?#the movie's been out for ten years I think people know by now

Can we talk about how much yellow Ben wears in the first movie and how be wears almost NONE in movies following?
In the first movie he almost exclusively wears yellow pants during the casual daytime. If we look at Beauty and the Beast, both OG and Descendants, Belle is almost entirely yellow and Beast is mostly blue with some gold but mostly just blue.
I think this represents Ben’s Belle-like nature. He loves seeing the good in people, but as he grows older and wants to be a good king, he looks to his dad and wears more blue. Even though he will always be more like his mom, he wants to look the part of King, which in his life is Blue.
Yes, I did just make an analysis on Ben’s Yellow Pants, welcome to my tumblr

Speculation: Why many people find Ben Florian unlikeable
Okay so just for the record, this is essentially an analysis post on the Disney series - Descendants. Specifically on the character of Ben Florian, but more so about the reception of his character and why I think people have responded to him the way they have. Gonna be fairly longish so yeah. Anyways, hope you enjoy! :)
Introduction
Pretty much ever since I first saw Descendants, I have been a huge fan of Ben. (Which is no secret if you've read my blog ;)). I think Mitchell Hope did a fantastic job with the character, and his performance really drove it home.
So it's always been quite... Confusing to me that so many people don't like his character. Tumblr isn't too anti Ben, but on YouTube videos and on TikTok, a lot of analysis around him is typically quite negative. The charms of the character that I see and that really make the series for me, really don't work on everyone. And that's something I've found very hard to understand.
But as of a conversation I have had with @hannahhook7744.. I had an epiphany. As to why this character just seems to be a breeze of annoyance to many. And I think the answer lies in tropes and expectations.
First let's talk a bit about another character, a fan favourite - Audrey Rose.
What role does the character of Audrey Rose play in feelings of spite toward Ben?
I think most dislike for Ben stems from the story of his ex girlfriend -Audrey. We get shown it to some extent in the first movie, but it's much more explicit in the third.
In Descendants 1, Ben and Audrey were together. And while under the influence of a love spell cast on him by protagonist Mal Bertha, he performs a love song to Mal in front of the entire school. Naturally humiliating Audrey and breaking her heart.
After the performance, Mal and Ben start dating each other, much to Audrey's understandable anger.
The movie ends with Ben and Mal happy together and everyone is delighted about it yada yada. And then we get an entire sequel where Audrey does not make a appearance.
It's then in Descendants 3 that she makes a comeback. We see that she and Ben have been friends since childhood, and that she's still hung up on him.
Then, again publicly, Ben proposes to Mal. Mal happily agrees and everyone is delighted, except of course, Audrey. She is further heartbroken by this.
The devastation Audrey feels from losing Ben to a girl who literally enchanted him, causes her to have a emotionally moving breakdown in her bedroom, singing "Queen of Mean", a song about heartbreak from rejection.... At least that's what it's about at first.
It then turns into a song of vengeance. Audrey swears revenge on Mal and Ben for the ordeal she has been put through. She takes Malificient's sceptre from the Auradon Museum, and it changes her look, style of talking etc etc. She's a new person. A person hellbent on getting even with the two people who are (intentionally or not) responsible for her heartbreak.
And that's where we enter - the tropes.
The Tropes
The kind of character arc Audrey has had is pretty common. A girl gets her heart broken by a guy. Maybe he cheats on her. Maybe he breaks up with her in a unfair manner (like in this case). And the girl decides to get even with the guy and the "other girl" who has taken her place in his life.
Except... Here's the thing.
Most of the time in this story archetype, the guy really is a heartbreaking douchey thob.
I mean think of any time you've seen this storyline other than Descendants. When is the guy who has dismissed the girl ever really portrayed in a decent light?
In this specific situation, it's not that simple. Yes, Ben did break up with Audrey by publicly humiliating her. And yes, that's extremely brutal. But he didn't choose to. He was acting under a mind controlling love spell.
But nonetheless, this is probably the only instance where the guy breaking the girl's heart like that genuinely was not his fault. It's pretty odd to get a situation where the guy cheating on the girl really didn't willingly do anything wrong. But nonetheless that's what this is.
Ultimately 9 times out of 10, the role Ben plays in this archetype storyline really is of the bad guy. And so it is very compelling to see this the same way. To overlook how at least as far as the break up incident itself, Ben was not at fault, and just see him as the jerk who hurt Audrey.
Audrey's story is also relatable to real life stories too
Another thing which sadly does not go in Ben's favour either, is that this kind of story isn't just found in fiction. Art reflects life, and what Audrey is unfortunate to experience, for the most part, is all too real.
Many people are unfortunate to get hurt by their partners in real life through things like cheating, or just something involving a "other girl/woman". And the pain from this.... Is not forgettable.
And so I think a revenge fantasy of hurting the unfaithful person and their new consort is very common.
Add onto that that lines Audrey speaks in D3 are written to be relatable and impactful. ("There's nothing to lose when you're lonely and friendless, I won't let another person take advantage of me, the anger burns my skin third degree, now my blood's boiling hotter than a fiery sea etc)
I think with that, it's all too easy for victims of these sort of situations to project their own case onto Audrey's. To see Ben the same way they see the guy who hurt them. And in some cases, to see Mal as how they see their homewrecker, and perhaps want to see her get hurt by Audrey too.
And in real life, there is no love spell that makes people cheat against their will, like there was for Ben. People in reality who do the thing that Ben did really are responsible for their hurtful actions.
So ultimately, the sorts of real life people Ben is being associated to by viewers, aren't particularly decent.
Also, the revelation that Ben and Audrey are childhood friends just exaggerates all these feelings. The people who have been hurt by partners who actually had significant meaning to them are the ones who will naturally relate to Audrey most. And again, project their own experiences onto this girl and the people in her life.
The mistake Ben DID make; wrong but taken out of proportion
Ultimately, while what Spell!Ben did is the sort of thing that gets done all the time irl, it is also pretty evident that as I keep saying; he wasn't in control of himself when he did it. So for many people, even the ones who can relate to Audrey, that fact will be acknowledged.
But the truth is, there is a mistake Ben made. After the love spell was lifted, Ben never went to see Audrey to comfort her after what happened. No doubt that inaction would have fuelled the already existing heartbreak. I mean if Ben had had a word with her, maybe he could have given her closure and made her feel better. But he didn't.
There is no justification for this. Ben was in the wrong for this failure.
But it should also be considered that Ben isn't a 40 year old man who has just left his wife of 10 years. He is a teenager. He is still developing in terms of maturity.
Communication, especially about difficult topics, isn't something teenagers are the best at. I mean if Ben were to approach Audrey, we can tell that it would have clearly been very understandably awkward for him (again, not an excuse, but a point to consider). I mean, if you had just done something so awful to your childhood friend/ex girlfriend, regardless of whether or not it was your fault, approaching someone who you'd expect is probably very angry about it is quite unnerving.
But none of these factors would be considered by a lot of audience members, and for understandable reason:
Because of the tropes, expectations and their personal experiences, they are pre set to see Ben in a negative light. So the thing he WAS wrong for, they understandably will find it harder to empathize with and see from his perspective.

I understand people here are upset about the Audrey hate - and I get that, but many are responding to that by blaming Ben for the situation that has unfolded. And that is victim blaming. He was under a drug/love spell that Mal dosed him with and anything he did under it is on her, not him.
You can defend Audrey without victim blaming Ben, and honestly I would say criticizing him here is even worse than criticizing her, as while it's easy to empathize with her actions she was at least in physical control of herself, Ben was not. Not that I believe judging either harshly is acceptable, but I see this as responding to an unfair criticism of character A with an even more unfair criticism of character B.

Me: complains about how Ben is treated badly in descendants
Also me in my fic:
Chapter 24: The kicking out of the Beast family as they learn Ben and Mal are a ‘thing’
Chapter 25: In their old palace Ben is beaten badly by his father and given fairy godmother’s lake water to heal his wounds, unintentionally washing off the spell.

I love him to a concerning degree actually.
Ben from Descendants is officially one of my favorite fictional characters of all time.
He’s such a sweetie, his help and guidance toward the VKs in the first movie is really heartwarming. And just the general fact of him trying to help them enter society. The scene where he comes to check on the VKs and they ask him about his coronation is honestly though minor one of my favorite scenes because the fact he went to check on them is so cute in my opinion.
Oh and him encouraging Carlos to spend time with Dude! That was so adorable! “I’ll just leave you guys and let you get to know each other and when you’re done you come find me”. This guy is an angel!
I don’t usually like purely good characters, but Mitchell Hope plays Ben in such an adorably charismatic way that I just adore this man! Probably my favorite character in the whole series!

A Royal Heart
Summary: Welcome to the world of Descendants but with a slight twist. (Y/N) is the sister of Prince Ben. (Y/N) encourages Ben to bring over some kids from the Isle, believing that everyone deserves a second chance even the children of villains. Together, the siblings set in motion a change that could alter Auradon's future forever.
Pairing: Ben x Reader (Sibling Relationship)
Warnings: None
You sat on the stone ledge of the castle balcony, legs dangling over the side as you gazed at the glittering lake. Auradon was beautiful, but sometimes it felt... too perfect. Too untouched. You swung your feet absentmindedly as the sound of hurried footsteps approached.
"(Y/N)!" Ben called out, slightly breathless as he jogged over. His crown was slightly askew from his rush, making you laugh softly.
"You know," you teased, "for a future king, you have terrible time management."
Ben rolled his eyes but smiled warmly, plopping down beside you. For a moment, you sat in silence, watching the sunset.
"I'm nervous about my speech tomorrow," he admitted. "The one for the Isle."
You turned to him, your heart swelling with pride. You had been pushing him to make this decision for months, whispering in his ear when your parents weren't around, reminding him that not everyone born to villains deserved their fate.
"You’re doing the right thing, Ben," you said firmly. "They deserve a chance — just like anyone else."
He bit his lip, looking unconvinced. "What if it backfires? What if I put everyone here in danger?"
You bumped your shoulder into his. "Then we handle it. Together. Just like we always do."
Ben chuckled, his nerves easing slightly. "You really think they’ll want to come here? To Auradon?"
You nodded. "If you offer them kindness... a real future... they'll come. I believe in them, and I believe in you."
He looked at you then — really looked at you — and smiled. That was what he needed: someone to believe in him, not just as a prince, but as a person. And if his sister could see a future where villains' kids could be heroes... maybe he could too.
"Thanks, (Y/N)," he said quietly. "You always know what to say."
You grinned. "It's a gift. Little sisters are basically wise sages, you know."
Ben laughed and stood up, offering you his hand. "Come on. I need your help writing the proclamation. And maybe making a few backup plans... just in case."
You took his hand, letting him pull you up. "Let's make history, Benny."
-----
In the grand castle of Beast, Ben, kept gazing out the window.
Even from way across the sparkling blue sea, Ben could see the magical barrier flickering and shimmering over the Isle of the Lost. It was beautiful — that far-off isle of exiled prisoners — but Ben couldn’t help feeling a deep sadness at the sight of it.
The royal tailor was fussing around him, fitting Ben into his blue coronation suit and jotting his measurements down on a notepad, while Belle and Beast strolled into the room.
“How is it possible that you’re going to be crowned king next month?” Beast said, blinking his blue eyes behind bold black-framed glasses. The gold crown atop his head glittered proudly. Soon, it would be passed to Ben. “You’re just a baby,” he said.
“Hey, Pops,” Ben said with a grin.
“He’s turning sixteen, dear,” Belle reminded gently, looking radiant in her signature yellow dress.
“Sixteen?” Beast repeated, taking off his glasses and tucking them into his jacket pocket. “That’s far too young to be crowned king. I didn’t make a good decision until I was at least...forty-two.”
Belle raised an eyebrow. “Uh, you decided to marry me at twenty-eight.”
“It was either you or a teapot," Beast teased, winking at Ben.
Ben chuckled, the mood in the room light and warm.
"Kidding," Beast added, his eyebrows dancing playfully.
Ben straightened up, growing more serious. “Mom, Dad, I’ve chosen my first official proclamation!”
Belle and Beast exchanged a glance and smiled in encouragement.
"I've decided that the children on the Isle of the Lost should be given a chance...to live here in Auradon," Ben announced.
The room fell into stunned silence.
The tailor, sensing the sudden tension in the air, quietly sat down on a nearby chair.
“Every time I look out at that island,” Ben said, gesturing toward the window, “I feel like they’ve been abandoned.”
“The children of our sworn enemies?” Beast said, disbelief etched across his face. “Living among us?”
“We’ll start with just a few at first — only the ones who need our help the most,” Ben explained quickly. “I’ve already chosen them.”
“Have you?” Beast asked, his eyebrows furrowing darkly.
Belle laid a gentle hand on Beast’s arm. “I gave you a second chance,” she reminded him softly, her voice full of meaning.
Ben nodded. “Their parents are...Cruella De Vil, Jafar, Evil Queen...” he hesitated for a moment, taking a deep breath, “and Maleficent.”
The tailor gasped, dropping his notepad with a thud.
“Maleficent?!” roared Beast. “She is the worst villain in the land!”
“Dad, just hear me out!” Ben protested, stepping forward.
“I won’t hear of it!” Beast snapped, his finger shaking with outrage. “They are guilty of unspeakable crimes!”
The butlers opened the door, and the poor tailor slunk quickly out of the room, leaving the family alone.
“But their children are innocent,” Ben insisted. “Don’t you think they deserve a shot at a normal life?”
Beast stared long and hard at his son, his jaw tight.
“Dad,” Ben said again, his voice quieter, more pleading.
Slowly, Beast's fierce expression softened. He looked to Belle for guidance. She nodded encouragingly.
“I suppose...the children are innocent,” Beast said at last.
------
Later that evening, you found Ben on the balcony, staring out at the distant flicker of the barrier once more. You approached quietly, wrapping your arms around him in a quick, comforting hug from behind.
"You did good," you said, smiling.
Ben shook his head, still unsure. "I don’t know if it’s enough. I don’t know if they’ll even want to come."
"You’re offering them hope, Ben," you said, moving to sit beside him. "Hope is a powerful thing."
He sighed. "I just...I don’t want to mess this up. What if they come here and no one accepts them? What if they hate it?"
You nudged him playfully. "Then we'll show them that they belong. You’re not in this alone, you know. I’ve got your back — always."
Ben gave a small smile, his golden crown glinting in the moonlight.
"I’m lucky to have you, (Y/N)," he said softly.
"And don’t you forget it, Your Majesty," you teased, bumping his shoulder.
He laughed, finally relaxing a little.
"You’re coming with me tomorrow to announce this, right?" he asked.
You grinned. "Of course. Someone’s got to make sure you don't trip over your words and embarrass the royal family."
Ben laughed harder this time, shaking his head. "You’re the best."
Together, the two of you sat there under the stars, staring across the sea. Two royal siblings, dreaming of a better world — and ready to make it happen, side by side.

D3 Rewatch
Y’all, there are two moments that may have gone unnoticed. I can’t remember cuz it was FIVE YEARS AGO but in the spirit of Rise of Red coming, here’s another random analysis posts.
Two Harry Hook moments in D3 stuck out to me
His whole character in D2 centered around being an unhinged second hand to Uma. In D3 he was more played out to be a MASSIVE flirt, very obnoxious, and still very unhinged.
Except:
(To Ben) You’re probably just gonna throw us all back inside.
(To Mal, on Uma’s behalf) You talk pretty, but she’s already made up her mind.
In these moments, for just a brief second, HARRY HOOK SEEMS SANE.
The situation gets real. His safety (and Uma’s) are not only threatened but guaranteed to be tanked with the return to hell on earth, and his unhinged facade (come on, its a cover) drops.
You can also say it drops when the groups reconvene after finding Ben and he asks Uma if she’s okay all quiet like, but lbr we’re all rewatched that scene to its death, Harry being soft to Uma is nothing new.
Anybody else glance this?

Also fuck Ben's parents. You couldn't wait till after your son finished school to make him King?
Put so much pressure on him that he almost broke down and than blamed himself for it. Calling it "going all Beast."
And than give him no security what's so ever while attending said school and being constantly hounded by the press.
Belle didn't even try to talk to Mal and give her even a bit of insight into the world she was getting herself into.
You guys suck.

Just wanna make a point to say that while I do not agree with you, such allegations like this, of cheating, are fired against Ben a lot more than Audrey.
I don't hate Audrey anymore at all, but I do want to make a point that Ben does get a lot more hate and the "cheating" label is unfairly applied to him a lot more. The meme of "if I had a nickel" wouldn't actually apply here, because it's definitely more than twice that "cheating", "cheated on", "cheater" or "unfaithful" I have seen as words used to wrongfully describe Ben.
(This is especially weird in a fanbase that does somewhat glorify Chad Charming, who is y'know legitimately guilty of playing with girls feelings/cheating on them/sexism etc, but that's a story for another day).
Friendly reminder that Audrey cheated on Ben before he ever actually did anything with Mal
