RealGM Radio Ben Golliver On Identity Changers Heading Into 24 25
Wes Goldberg begins his tenure as host of RealGM Radio with a conversation featuring Ben Golliver of the Washington Post. Goldberg and Golliver talk about “Identity Changers” in the form of new faces in new places who will change the way a team plays or how a specific unit functions. They discuss Klay Thompson with the Dallas Mavericks, changes to the Phoenix Suns, JJ Redick’s impact on the Los…

O plano a longo prazo é roubar o Luka, torná-lo a próxima cara do Lakers.

Lakers' LeBron James Responds to Flopping Allegations by Warriors HC Steve Kerr | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors
Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James denied Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr’s insinuation that the Lakers have been flopping during their second-round playoff series. Typically, the NBA MVP race is no country for big men.
With offensive efficiency and pace on the rise over the past decade, MVP ballots have been dominated by three-point marksmen, perimeter scorers and point forwards. The last time a player who was officially listed as a center won the award was Shaquille O’Neal in 2000. Not since Dwight Howard in 2011 has a center received a first-place vote.
But the 2021 MVP race is shaping up to be more intriguing than some recent runaways thanks to a pair of supersized candidates. With the season now roughly one-quarter over, Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid and Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic have emerged alongside Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James as leading contenders. Embiid and Jokic share numerous MVP qualities: They have led their teams to strong starts, they have reached new heights statistically and they have helped adapt the center’s role in the modern, perimeter-oriented game.
Respect for the big men from Ben Golliver at The Washington Post. Worth reading.

Stuff just got REAL for the US professional leagues
NBA suspends season after player tests positive for coronavirus (washingtonpost.com) By Ben Golliver March 11, 2020 at 8:46 p.m. CDT
The NBA announced Wednesday that the 2019-20 season has been suspended indefinitely after a member of the Utah Jazz tested positive for the Coronavirus.
The announcement came hours after NBA owners held a conference call to discuss the league’s coronavirus response plans that failed to produce a resolution, and shortly after a game between the Jazz and the Oklahoma City Thunder was abruptly postponed shortly before tip-off.
NBA has suspended the season in the wake of a player testing positive for coronavirus. pic.twitter.com/Dpqp3VA7TK
— Howard Beck (@HowardBeck) March 12, 2020 “A player on the Utah Jazz has preliminary tested positive for COVID-19,” the NBA’s statement read. “The test result was reportedly shortly prior to tip-of of [Wednesday’s] game. At that time, [Wednesday’s] game was canceled. The affected player was not in the arena. The NBA is suspending game play following the conclusion of [Wednesday’s] schedule until further notice. The NBA will use this hiatus to determine next steps for moving forward in regard to the coronavirus pandemic.”
The sports world today has been INTENSE.
I honestly can’t see how the NBA can sensibly come back this year. The virus won’t be controlled before the scheduled end of the season. You can’t have spectators and athletes in a closed environment with recirculated air right now, you simply cannot ethically do so. (The NBA owners and ethics having only periodic acquaintances, but this one may be forced.)
Thing is, with all the talk about sports that has ensued today, almost all of the decisionmaking has been focused on the spectators. Very little discussion has been about the athletes themselves. And now that discussion is forced.
All eyes now turn to major league baseball, which has some hard decisions to make. On the upside -- sort of -- most baseball stadiums are open air, which means that the players have less chance of coming in contact with infected spectators. On the downside, the open field doesn’t matter for spectators, who are crammed together in the stands. And on the other side, there are a few teams, like Tampa, that play in domed stadiums, so the recirculated air is an issue for them.

The Bucks Stop here
A career year for former number 2 pick Jabari Parker has ended prematurely, after the explosive forward tore his ACL for the second time in three years. (Feb 9 vs Suns) As the Robin to Antetokounmpo’s Batman, the Bucks were in the midst of trying to push their way back into playoff contention, and had just welcomed Khris Middleton back from injury earlier than expected. But before they could log a single minute back together, Parker was down and out after a fairly innocuous drive to the basket.
Parker now faces another huge layoff, and though young, could struggle to retain what was starting to look like All-Star form…
“as a clear franchise cornerstone in a small market and an All-Star in the making, (Parker) was in line to sign a deal worth upwards of $110 million over four years.
Now? He will very likely need to work his way back to the court next season and enter the 2018 offseason as a restricted free agent. Are nine-figure offers still going be there for a player with multiple ACL tears and only three or four months of game action to prove that he’s recovered from the second one? Maybe, but maybe not” (Ben Golliver, Sports Illustrated)
After bouncing back from his previous ACL tear, a second period of recovery will be hard to stomach, mentally and physically. And for the Bucks, the team will now have to face another year or so without their second-best player.
It’s becoming increasingly unlikely that Antetokounmpo will carry the Bucks into the playoffs, despite his best efforts. Last night the Bucks fell to the LA Lakers, giving up 47 (not a typo) first quarter points, and though the Greek Freak did his utmost to pull the Bucks back into contention, the Lakers saw it through to hand the Bucks another painful loss. Until Khris Middleton can start to see heavy minutes, the Bucks will have to rely upon Mirza Teletovic and Michael Beasley to fill in for Parker. Teletovic should, in theory, stretch the floor but has struggled shooting the ball this season, dropping from 39.3% on 3s last year, to under 35% for the Bucks. He’s also seeing the fewest minutes per game since his rookie year in Brooklyn, although that average could go up now thanks to Parker’s injury. Beasley can score the ball, and has been shooting well over the course of the season, but the 8-year pro has only played more than 50 games twice since the 2011-2012 season (he’s already clocked up 44 this year). Neither Teletovic nor Beasley can replace the explosiveness that Parker brought to an increasingly watchable Bucks team. A team that, until January, were looking like a solid bet for playoff action.
But every hero needs their sidekick. (Unless you’re Russell Westbrook) and with Antetokounmpo doing practically everything possible for the Bucks, the roster just doesn’t run deep enough to cover for Parker’s absence. It looks like the Bucks stop here…

Isaiah Stewart actually wanted to fight LeBron James after he elbowed him in the face
Isaiah Stewart wanted all the smoke from LeBron.
LeBron James and Isaiah Stewart were both ejected from the Los Angeles Lakers vs. Detroit Pistons game on Sunday evening after James elbowed Stewart in the face and set off an intense scene in Detroit. Stewart ran after James multiple times and needed to held back by teammates and Pistons personnel as blood ran down his face following the shot from James.
James was assessed a flagrant-2 foul hitting Stewart after a free throw attempt. The Pistons were leading the Lakers by 12 points at the time of the incident, but LA rallied for a 121-116 victory without James.
Rarely does it seem like NBA players actually want to fight when a scuffle breaks out during a game. There’s no doubt Stewart was ready to throw down. You can watch the full scene here:

Stewart made multiple efforts to charge at James. Thankfully, he couldn’t get to him.
Here’s another angle of Stewart making a run for James:

— NBA Retweet (@RTNBA) November 22, 2021
James had 10 points in 21 minutes before the ejection. Stewart had four points in 19 minutes before being tossed.
The Lakers out-scored the Pistons by 20 points in the fourth quarter to steal the win.
Stewart had blood running down his face throughout the incident with James.
Here’s another look at James hitting Stewart:

Anthony Davis said after the game that everyone knows LeBron isn’t a dirty player:
Lakers' Anthony Davis: “Everyone in the league knows that [LeBron James] isn’t a dirty guy. As soon as he did it, he looked back and told him, ‘My bad. I didn’t try to do it.’ I don’t know what [Isaiah Stewart] was trying to do. Nobody on our team, 1-15, was having it."
— Ben Golliver (@BenGolliver) November 22, 2021
We’ll update this post if there’s any discipline from the league after the incident.

Subtitled: Inside the NBA’s Fight to Save a Season I received an advance reader copy of this book from the publisher through Net Galley in exchange for an honest review. Ben Golliver covers the NBA for the Washington Post, and while I don’t follow the NBA very closely I couldn’t resist reading about how they handled the end of the 2020 NBA season and playoffs in the Disney bubble.
