hgnnnh i would rec this entire series if i could (it's 14 fics totally 200k total). its all so chewy i want to get my teeth into it and rrrrrrrrrr. ANYWAY this is my no 1 fav i've been back and re-read it about 7 times. love the Camila Noceda POV; the way it captures the chaos of all 6 kids in the house and makes it feel so real & vivid; the absolutely brutal Hunter characterisation. if ur a Hunter fan go read this right away.

For the first minute, they all just stand there in silence and watch the airship slowly disappear beyond the horizon. Even though they’re supposed to react quickly, the cold still comes as a shock. It takes some time for the reality to settle in and for them to realize how useless everything they have brought is going to be when their marrow freezes. Hunter hears some of the Scouts inhaling sharply after they approach the ledge and look down. They turn around, unsure where to start, and they shuffle their feet in the snow (terrible decision, really, this way their boots are going to get wet even quicker). Hunter’s the first one to break the silence, and oh, he does it with style. He has been rehearsing that line for a week. “See you at the bottom, suckers!” he exclaims as he pulls out the staff and disappears in a flash of red light. The view from the staircase is, well, not stunning, that’s definitely not the word. It’s just that “view” is supposed to be accompanied by “stunning,” and Luz can feel her brain coming to a screeching halt and refusing to process what they’re seeing. It's skeletons. Come on, they both knew it was going to be skeletons. The entire Isles know at this point. (Or: despite what the stories would have you believe, in the aftermath, there are things to deal with. Those things include ruined infrastructure, electing new leaders, and prosecuting those responsible for the old regime. And apparently, also Grimwalker mass graves.)

& third and final. unbelievably chewy post-canon fic. lets get into the reconstruction of the isles in full detail. goes hard as hell. will sit in my brain for a long time i think. cannot rec this enough.

Hunter getting splashed with Belos goo was the original idea for that scene from King's Tide when the Collector splatters Belos against the wall. And yeah the crew referred to it as the "splash zone" and joked about how they love torturing Hunter because it's so easy :/

The way Hunter is treated really just rubs me the wrong way too. I understand when writers say they enjoy 'torturing' characters, but that's normally because it's a 'worse before it gets better' situation. This is at the end! How is Hunter getting covered in the remains of abuser funny? How?

The crew pushed for this which makes me wonder. Were the only reason they DIDN'T that it wasn't allowed by Disney for obvious reasons? Was it because of limitations? Or did the crew get back to their senses and go hm. Maybe we shouldn't do that

I keep thinking about the Belos Splash Zone scene.

Specifically how it would have been a parallel to this scene from Clouds on the Horizon

In CotH, Hunter (appearing as Luz because of the illusion spell) is the first one to dodge - by a lot!

Kikimora's shadow just begins to appear, covering the others' heads but not even Hunter himself, and yet he's already realized it while the others are still looking ahead and oblivious.

By the time the others look up, Hunter is already into action, grabbing the person closest to him (Willow) and teleporting them away to safety. At that point, everyone else is only beginning to glance up, and they all take a lot longer to register the threat, and then finally barely dodge out of the way.

But in the Belos Splash Zone concept, everyone would dodge out of the way except for Hunter, who would be immobilized in pain or fear (or both) and be the only one to get splattered with the gooped remains of his uncle while everyone else managed to avoid it.

Probably nothing, but I would like to point this out.

In this scene we see Belos drop the collector down an abyss.

And we all KNOW what’s down there…

And then after this scene with Belos, it cuts back to The Gang™️ and it shows Hunter falling similarity to The Collector.

Now I’m not saying that this is foreshadowing that Hunter will be going down that abyss and see all of those dead Grimwalkers… but… I’m saying that this is foreshadowing that Hunter will be going down that abyss and see all of those dead Grimwalkers.

The show probably won’t do that, but knowing about the whole “Belos splash zone” that got cut, I don’t think the creators are afraid to make Hunter go through even more horrible, real fucked up, shit. Like, being splattered with your uncles remains?? Fucked up! Seeing all of your dead predecessors/ clones corpses? Fucked up! The creators are really not afraid of making Hunter go through morbid and gruesome shit like THAT. Honestly, the creators are just playing a fun little game at how they can make Hunters mental state even worse!! So him seeing the golden guard graveyard is a possibility that doesn’t seem too off the table.

Okay, but that “splash zone” concept was totally going to be the team’s way to keep the “Hunter gets his loose hair stained by shenanigans” joke going. Instead of the goop falling on his shoulder at the last moment before stepping over Belos’ stain remains, we probably would have seen most of the Belos guts get washed off by the rain, only to have a single stubborn stain still hold onto his hair when Camila opened the door to see them all gathered at her pouch. It could have been what that silly running gag has been building up towards this entire time. As much as I am lowkey horrified that this concept almost came to be, I have to give it to the crew if that was their intentions.

It hurts.

Hunter knew the draining spell was going to be bad, but this—this is unlike anything he’s ever had to endure before. His right arm simultaneously feels numb and like it’s on fire, glowing cracks spiderwebbing across his skin and still climbing steadily higher. His collarbone begins to burn, and his breathing comes in short, uneven gasps. It crawls up his cheek, and he’s beginning to lose feeling in the side of his face. His vision swims as Belos charges toward them, and he flinches back into Willow’s chest as his uncle raises a claw, and—

The hit never comes. The five of them slowly look up, and—and Hunter doesn’t know who that is. Or—or maybe he does. His arm hurts. Titan.

The newcomer is talking, and Belos—monstrous as he is—looks… afraid. A sick satisfaction worms its way into Hunter’s gut. Guilt crawls up his spine. The child—the star-creature—the Collector. They twirl their finger and Belos is tossed around like a doll. Hunter’s heart jumps into his throat. He can’t hear.

The Collector flicks a finger.

Belos goes flying. He smashes into the wall, sticky black-green-brown viscera splashing down the stone, and Hunter sees Luz and Amity duck out of the corner of his eye, and Willow dodges right, Gus dodges left, and he tries to move, he really does, but he can’t feel his leg, and—and—

Blood and gore and dead-bug-paste-esque fluid splashes across his face. He can’t breathe. Everyone is staring at him.

Belos’ remains are staining his face.

Hunter gags. Slaps a gloved, bloody hand over his mouth and regrets it. He lurches forward, and hands come to steady him, and everything is on fire and burning and Belos’ lifeblood is staining his shirt and that was his uncle. That was his family.

Everyone tries to appease the Collector. All Hunter can do is choke on a sob.

The world begins to split apart, and Hunter hardly realizes he’s being dragged. The glowing is gone—they stopped the spell, then, good, hopefully the pain stops soon, and—and he recovers enough to take the charge, to throw himself at the door and swing it open.

They’re knocked through, and Hunter goes down hard. He lands in the mud on his hands and knees, thick brown muck staining his already-Belos-stained gloves.

(This time, he pukes.)
