LONDON — There often comes a point when European competition takes on greater significance than domestic pursuits, and Arsenal have surely reached that juncture now. The same is true of Manchester City, especially given the responsibility Pep Guardiola feels in delivering Champions League success as the ultimate validation of his methods. But they can concentrate on their last-16 tie against Borussia Monchengladbach almost free of Premier League concerns after a facile 1-0 win over the Gunners at Emirates Stadium restored their 10-point lead at the summit.

Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta has no such comforts. Arsenal’s 11th league defeat of the season leaves them 11 points adrift of the top four, meaning Champions League qualification — an essential financial and footballing target — is surely most likely achieved through the Europa League.

Winning Europe’s second-tier competition will be difficult, of course, but last season’s FA Cup final success underlined Arteta’s ability to prepare a team for knockout matches. Yet it could reasonably be argued that Arsenal would have been beaten on Sunday no matter what team Arteta selected.

City extended their staggering run to 18 successive victories in all competitions with a victory that never looked in doubt from the moment Raheem Sterling scored after 77 seconds. Guardiola’s side were already working the ball with their customary swagger and Riyad Mahrez should be praised for the accuracy of his delivery from the right, but it is a damning indictment of Arsenal’s defence that Sterling, just 5-foot-7, was allowed to rise unmarked and guide a header past goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

The Gunners regrouped in the face of an early onslaught, but in truth City eased off thereafter, happy to control the game through conservative possession. From start to finish, both teams played as though they knew the end result and were willing to save themselves for what comes next.

For Arsenal, it is surely their biggest game of the season to date. Their Europa League last-32 tie against Benfica is finely poised after the first leg ended 1-1. Arteta named an unchanged lineup for that game from their previous outing against Leeds United, the first time the Spaniard had done so during his tenure, and an understandable decision given the attacking fluency they showed against Marcelo Bielsa’s side. But the knock-on effect was surely felt here, even with five alterations to the team.

Bukayo Saka did his best to carry an attacking threat for the hosts, combining positively with Kieran Tierney down the left, but both looked fatigued by the end, particularly Tierney. Hector Bellerin, in his eighth consecutive start, was some way off his best. At least Emile Smith Rowe was given a breather for all but the final 18 minutes. Martin Odegaard, on loan from Real Madrid, started his third consecutive game, but could not affect it in anything like the way Arteta would have hoped.

The same was true of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, whose three outings in seven days sum up his inconsistency at present: a hat trick against Leeds, followed by profligacy against Benfica and then anonymity against City. He had just 19 touches all game, the fewest of any player to play 90 minutes, closely followed by Nicolas Pepe (22), whose underwhelming 73-minute display underlines how important it is for Arsenal to spend the money they have wisely when trying to match teams with much greater financial muscle. At £72 million, Pepe cost more than any other player on the pitch, yet he was probably the most peripheral.

“With the schedule we have, it is really demanding. We have no time to recover, very little time to prepare a game,” Arteta said after Sunday’s defeat. “For example, against City we could not prepare the game on the field because we didn’t have enough time. But we have to get used to it.

The need for Arsenal to get everything right in the transfer market is heightened by the wider financial constraints the club are under — exemplified by the first-team wage cut and 55 non-playing staff redundancies — but it would be exacerbated still further without any income from European football. There are a myriad of complications, but the fifth-placed team and FA Cup winners go into the Europa League next season, with the sixth-placed side qualifying for the inaugural Europa Conference League.

Arsenal are six points behind defending champions Liverpool in sixth place — it’s not an insurmountable hurdle, but if the past few days have suggested anything, it is that Arsenal may have to prioritise their pursuits from here.

Arsenal travel to Greece on Wednesday to face Benfica and then face a quick turnaround with a trip to Leicester on Sunday, kicking off at midday. It’s a grueling schedule made tougher by COVID-19 restrictions, which have forced their Wednesday game to be moved to Athens, and offers a similar conundrum for Arteta as the one he faced this week: a major European game followed by an in-form domestic rival.

“It’s hard because everybody wants to play and everybody wants to be available for every game,” said Arteta. “Everybody is doing their best to be available all the time, which I value a lot. But there are a lot of players with fatigue, they played so many minutes and we don’t have enough players to replace them, unfortunately.”

The mounting evidence suggests Arsenal simply do not possess a strong enough squad to compete on both fronts. Therefore, Arteta has some difficult decisions ahead.

Subs not used: Casilla, Hernandez, Davis, Gelhardt, Cresswell, Jenkins. Our matchday squad for this game looked pretty threadbare compared to the array of stars that Arsenal had at their disposal. Marcelo Bielsa tried to compensate for the loss of Kalvin Phillips by moving Pascal Struijk into the defensive midfield slot and Luke Ayling from right back to centre back. Jamie Shackleton took Ayling's place at right back. Pablo Hernandez returned to the bench but there's still no sign of Rodrigo, Adam Forshaw, Ian Poveda, Robin Koch, Diego Llorente or Gaetano Berardi. The game was pretty even for the first few minutes and we had a decent early chance to score, when Patrick Bamford's header at the near post was well saved by Arsenal keeper Bernd Leno. But then it all went wrong.... Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored Arsenal's opening goal a minute later and after that they completely dominated the rest of the first half. We found ourselves closed down very effectively and really struggled to pass the ball out from the back. Arsenal had a strong shout for a penalty turned down after a VAR review on the half hour mark, but did eventually get one a few minutes before the break when Illan Meslier fouled Bukayo Saka, and Aubameyang made no mistake from the spot. We started the second half with Helder Costa and Tyler Roberts in place of Jack Harrison and Mateusz Klich, but were soon 4-0 down when Costa lost the ball in a dangerous position and Emile Smith Rowe dribbled into the area and crossed for Aubameyang to complete his hat-trick with a header at the far post. With Arsenal running riot, Bielsa responded by taking off Gjanni Alioski and replacing him with young Niall Huggins, making his first team debut. We didn't throw in the towel and after Raphinha had a powerful effort tipped behind, Pascal Struijk scored with a bullet header from the resulting corner (which must have been particularly satisfying, given that he missed three similar chances in our last game). Roberts then linked up with fellow substitute Costa, who made up for his earlier mistake by finishing smartly from inside the box. A few minutes later we had a strong shout for a penalty turned down. Who knows what would have happened if we'd scored again at that stage, but as things turned out Arsenal managed to see out the rest of the game without too much trouble. As a result we're back down to 11th place, and it also means that since December 2017 we have played 15 games in London and come home with a total of two points, after 13 defeats and two draws. We'll have two more chances before the end of the season to finally get a win in the capital, when we play West Ham and Fulham, who unexpectedly managed to beat Everton this week and cut the gap between us and the bottom three to 14 points....

In today's four games 13 goals hit the net and Man Utd maintained their unbeaten away record but they could only draw 1-1 at West Brom. United fell behind early again when Mbaye Diagne nodded the home side into a shock lead after just 83 seconds but having taken 21 points after going behind this season there was always hope and despite a sluggish first half performance Bruno Fernandes fired home a powerful volley to haul United level a minute before the break. The away side were much improved in the second half and thought they had a penalty but VAR overturned the decision deciding that Semi Ajayi hadn't made enough contact to foul Harry Maguire. West Brom could have won it late on but Diagne missed two chances while Maguire saw his effort tipped over the bar by Sam Johnstone with the last kick of the game. United go back into second place on goal difference while West Brom remain 19th. Everton missed the chance to move level on points with Liverpool after going down to a 2-0 home defeat against Fulham. The London side controlled the game from start to finish but had nothing to show for it by half time with a Bobby Reid header hitting the post the closest they came. But Josh Maja on his first start for the club struck a well-worked opener three minutes into the second half before he doubled the lead just after the hour pouncing after Harrison Reed struck the woodwork. Everton were poor and it took them 76 minutes to have an attempt on target,the defeat leaves them 7th three points off the top 4 while Fulham have given themselves a chance at the bottom they sit 18th seven points from safety. Arsenal moved above Leeds by beating them 4-2. The Gunners were three up by the break ,Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice first his clever finish at the near post after 13 minutes put his side ahead and then four minutes before the break keeper Illan Meslier fouled Bukayo Saka and Aubameyang fired home the penalty. There was still time for Hector Bellerin to score his first goal of the season to make it 3 right on half time. Aubameyang completed his hat-trick two minutes into the second half when he headed home a Emile Smith Rowe cross shot at the far post. There was a partial Leeds fightback with Pascal Struijk's bullet header on 58 minutes and a close range finish from Helder Costa with 20 minutes to go but Arsenal held on moving them into 10th two points in front of the Elland Road side. The other game of the day saw Southampton slip to their sixth straight league defeat going down 2-1 at home to Wolves. Danny Ings superb volley gave the hosts the lead on 25 minutes but a moment of controversy turned the game when Ryan Bertrand was penalised for handling Nelson Semedo's shot in the box and Ruben Neves converted the penalty to level the scores on 53 minutes and the turnaround was complete when a flash of brilliance from Pedro Neto saw his strike from an acute angle find the net. The result moves Wolves above Southampton into 12th with the Saints dropping to 13th.

There are two final games to finish off this round and they both take place on Monday night.

Soon after the break, Trezeguet forced a save from Bernd Leno while Jack Grealish missed a great chance as well. Meanwhile, substitute Nicolas Pepe came close for Arsenal minutes after coming on.

However, it was Villa who got the next goal to effectively kill the contest, with summer signing Ollie Watkins heading home a Ross Barkley cross. The former Brentford man got his second of the night moments later, applying the finishing touches on a pass from Grealish to heap further misery on Arsenal.

It was a disappointing performance at home from Mikel Arteta’s men and here’s how we rated the performances of the Gunners’ stars on the night.

Bernd Leno: 5/10

The German international was let down by his defence big time on the night, and there was very little that he could have done to stop any of Villa’s goals. Did make a decent stop to deny Trezeguet in the second half. Cruel irony that Emi Martinez has more clean sheets in the Premier League at the Emirates this season (1) than Leno.

Rob Holding: 3/10

Preferred over David Luiz after his strong performance against Manchester United last weekend, the Englishman struggled to get to grips to the movement and sharp link-up play of Grealish and Barkley, who gave him the run-around all game long. Two of Villa’s goals on the night came from his side.

Gabriel Magalhaes: 3/10

While Gabriel has been one of Arsenal’s best players of the season so far, the Brazilian had a night to forget against the Villans. Found it difficult to deal with the brilliant Watkins throughout the game. Wasn’t his composed self while in possession either, with his distribution a let-down on occasion.

Was Arsenal’s best player on the night, although it is nothing to shout about. Got forward and played some enticing crosses into the box. But, was found wanting at the back as he had trouble containing the dynamic Aston Villa attackers. An early comical gaffe on the ball almost ended up hurting his team.

Hector Bellerin: 3/10

The Spaniard had some positive moments in the first half in terms of his attacking play. But, he was given a torrid time by Grealish and the overlapping Matt Targett all game long. Suspect positioning, lack of awareness allowed the Villa attackers to make the most.

Started well in the middle of the park, playing some eye-catching cross-field passes into Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Picked up a thigh injury and struggled from thereon, before being taken off at half-time.

Mohamed Elneny: 4/10

Handed a starting berth ahead of the likes of Joe Willock and Granit Xhaka after his all-action performance against Manchester United, Elneny was a shadow of himself from last weekend. Found it tough to break up play, more so following Partey’s submission, while he wasn’t progressive and forward-thinking enough with his distribution.

Bukayo Saka: 2/10

A rare off night for the teenage starlet, who lost Trezeguet in the lead-up to Villa’s opener, before sticking his leg out to score an own goal. Showed some improvement after the half-time break but wasn’t able to alter the course of the game.

Willian: 2/10

Preferred over Nicolas Pepe once again on the right flank, the Brazilian struggled to get going on the night. Slowed things down when in possession way too often, while hardly showing any intent to take opponents on. Had a chance in the second half but dragged his effort wide. Hooked off after the hour-mark.

Alexandre Lacazette: 2/10

Alexandre Lacazette had fewer touches (9) than any other player on the pitch in the first half at the Emirates and won 0/3 contested duels.

Should have pulled Arsenal level before half-time, but sent his header well over from a very good position. Conceded possession a tad too easily at times, while his movement and running wasn’t always sharp either. Has now gone six games without a goal in all competitions, with his last coming in September.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang: 2/10

Another disappointing outing for the Arsenal captain, who was pretty much taken out of the game by some good defensive work by Matty Cash and Trezeguet. Hardly had a sniff at goal throughout the night, made zero dribbles, had zero shots on goal. With him being ineffective on the left and Lacazette struggling, perhaps it’s time for Arsenal to play him through the centre.

Sent on for the injured Partey at half-time. Made a goal-line clearance, which was as good as it got for the Real Madrid loanee. Had little to no impact on the creative side of things.

Eddie Nketiah: 3/10

Replaced Lacazette for the final thirty minutes or so. Hardly did anything of note during this cameo.

Nicolas Pepe: 5/10

Came on for Willian a little after the hour mark. Was bright in his short time on the field. Missed narrowly with a curling effort after cutting in from the right flank.
