Louis (partie 1)
I’m actually very funny, you can ask my girlfriend ».
J’accepte.
Time to shine.
Il me semble doux.

They knew if they looked in that same ledger they’d find their signatures, once a year, stretching back to a June day more than thirty years ago when young Armand had saved his money and brought Reine-Marie here. For one night. In the tiniest of rooms at the very back of the splendid old Manoir. Without a view of the mountains or the lake or the perennial gardens lush with fresh peonies and first-bloom roses. He’d saved for months, wanting that visit to be special. Wanting Reine-Marie to know how much he loved her, how precious she was to him.
And so they’d lain together for the first time, the sweet scent of the forest and kitchen thyme and lilac drifting almost visible through the screened window. But the loveliest scent of all was her, fresh and warm in his strong arms. He’d written a love note to her that night. He’d covered her softly with their simple white sheet, then, sitting in the cramped rocking chair, not daring to actually rock in case he whacked the wall behind or barked his shins on the bed in front, disturbing Reine-Marie, he’d watched her breathe. Then on Manoir Bellechasse notepaper he’d written, My love knows no — How can a man contain such — My heart and soul have come alive — My love for you — All night he wrote and next morning, taped to the bathroom mirror, Reine-Marie found the note: I love you… A Rule Against Murder - Louise Penny

Bella Hadid walks the Saint Laurent runway after 2-year hiatus
Kate Moss and Linda Evangelista turned up to show their support. They were eagerly anticipating seeing Bella Hadid walk the Saint Laurent runway. Bella Hadid returned to the runway after being absent for two years at Saint Laurent's Fashion Week show. In 2022, the 27-year-old model was noticeably absent from the runways after stepping back to prioritize her health. She has openly discussed her ongoing struggle with Lyme disease, which led her to take this break. Her comeback highlighted Bella Hadid walking the Saint Laurent show. Hadid wore a masculine suit and tie and slicked back hair (Vianney Le Caer/AP) Hadid showcased a mannish oversized suit and tie, thick-frame tinted specs, and a slicked-back ponytail. Hadid's look was one of several nods to the Seventies wardrobe of Yves Saint Laurent himself throughout the show, which the label's director, Anthony Vaccarello, presented in the form of fluid suits and layered overcoats. Yves-Saint-Laurent or YSL, was a French fashion designer who, in 1962, founded his eponymous fashion label. He is regarded as being among the foremost fashion designers of the twentieth century. In 1985, Caroline Milbank wrote, "The most consistently celebrated and influential designer of the past twenty-five years, Yves Saint Laurent can be credited with both spurring the couture's rise from its 1960s ashes and with finally rendering ready-to-wear reputable." #design #fashion #tech #yvessaintlaurent #paris #france🇫🇷 #oran #algeria 🇩🇿 #marrakech #morocco 🇲🇦 (à Yves Saint Laurent 37 Rue Bellechasse) https://www.instagram.com/p/CmM-A0OL758/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

"4 ATTENTATS A MAIN ARMEE COMMIS EN FIN DE SEMAINE," La Patrie. June 18, 1934. Page 18.

I decided to look into this.
The letter from Sillery to Camille is dated March 3 1791 and goes as follows:
It has been a very long time, my dear Camille, since I had the pleasure of writing to you. For 15 days I have been attached to the office of the National Assembly, and I have the project of inviting you to Sunday dinner in a week, the day on which I will quit my tiresome commission. I would need to see you, in order to recover my spirit, which would end up abandoning me, if I were obliged to occupy it with the sad report. Madame de Sillery is coming to dine at my house with Péthion (sic) and Robespierre, and I dare ask your amiable and pretty wife to too do me this honor. Madame de Sillery asks me to tell you that she still loves you, but that she is afraid that you are childish enough to sulk. Come, my dear Camille, and if you have ever found yourself in a pure and exact democracy, it will be Sunday in eight when I hope to embrace you. A brief response. Sillery
According to La belle Paméla…, on the fac-simile of this letter, one finds the words ”you’re not wrong” written in the hand of Lucile Desmoulins after the sentence ”Madame de Sillery asks me to tell you that she still loves you, but that she is afraid that you are childish enough to sulk.”
As can be seen, the letter doesn’t confirm Camille not being made Pamela’s guardian was the reason for his sulkiness, but it would line up rather well seeing as Barère was given this position on February 7 1791, a mere month before Sillery wrote his letter. On page 293 of La belle Paméla… there is to read:
In the Duc of Chartres’ journal, one reads on the date of February 7 1791: Yesterday all day at Bellechasse where MM. Voidel, Sillery, Barrère (sic) and Volney dined. My friend [Mme de Sillery] and Mr. Barrère finally signed the contract and the donation.
Barère himself had the following to say about Pamela in his memoirs:
Why my enemies called me the Guardian of Pamela When it was sought, in 1794, to render me unpopular at the Jacobin Club, I was called, in the documents and in speeches from the tribune, the “Guardian of Pamela,” and treated as an Orleanist. From the 15th of March, 1793, that was a title to banishment. According to my custom, I made no reply. I have always despised the calumnies and calumniators of Paris. They have doubtless done me much harm, but I know that in Paris people only listen to the accusation, and that they can never be made to hear a justification. Calumny is the patrimony of the Parisians, As for the title of guardian, it should be known that in 1791 the Duke of Orleans, wishing to make a present to Mademoiselle Pamela (for whom he had a great affection) of an income of 6,000 francs settled upon her, and also a life annuity of 1,500 francs as the price of the libary bought of Madame de Genlis, the notary Rouen told the Duke of Orleans’ solicitor that Mademoiselle Pamela was a minor, and that she must have an official guardian. One day, when in the company of Madame de Genlis, that lady spoke to me of the necessity of having a guardian for the beautiful Pamela. Several deputies jested about this dangerous guardianship ; but the demand was serious, and Mademoiselle Pamela had to make an immediate choice. After some ceremony and delay, she chose me for her guardian from among twelve or fifteen deputies who were that day in the company of Madame de Genlis. It was only to fulfil a simple formality in affixing my signature to two documents. I accepted with pleasure, and signed the two documents at M. Rouen’s. That is how I was for a few instants, and to fulfil a simple formality, the guardian of the most amiable, the best trained, and the most accomplished person I have ever known. I did not see her again after the time (December, 1792) when she returned to England with Madame de Genlis, and proceeded immediately to Belgium
Camille was not late in using Barère’s position as a weapon against him (which, massive hypocrite move if it is true he also had desired it):
My dear Barère! Happy guardian of Pamela! you the president of the Feuillans! who proposed the Committee of Twelve, you who, on June 2, put in deliberation in the Committee of Public Safety, whether to arrest Danton! You, about whom I could point out many other faults… Camille in number 5 of le Vieux Cordelier
It’s Barrère, tutor of Paméla, who accuses me of being of Orleans’ faction! […] Will witnesses be needed to prove that the tartuffe, that the scoundrel Barrère was president of the Feuillans, guardian of Pamela; that he proposed the commission of 12; that Sempronius Gracchus Vilate, here juror, is well known as Barrere's spy; that Barrère lodged in the Pavillon de Flore; that he came to my house to caress me, flatter me, and say on his way out to Rousselin: we must have the heads of Danton, Camille Desmoulins, Philippeaux within 8 days. Camille in his defence
As for Camille watching Pamela dancing, he wrote about it in his Histoire des Brissotins (1793). There’s however no indication it took place during the same dinner Sillery is inviting him to in the letter above, with Lucile and Robespierre present:
Isn't it so that Pétion made the trip from London in a carriage with Madame Sillery, and Mademoiselles d'Orleans, Pamela and Sercey, who could be called the three graces, and who pressed his virtuous and thankfully incorruptible knee; and that it was on this return that he was appointed mayor of Paris? […] Does Pétion not think that I remember, three years ago, my dinners at Sillery’s, in the sallon of Apollon, where also he himself, Voidel, Volney, Mirabeau, Barère, guardian of Pamela, and other republicans of that material came to dine, but to where one never invited Robespierre? […] We were alone in the yellow room in rue Neuve des Mathurins. Old Sillery, in spite of his gout, had himself rubbed the floor with chalk, lest the feet of the charming dancers should slip. Madame Sillery had just sung on the harp a song which I keep preciously, in which she invited volatility, and Mlles Paméla and Sercey were dancing a Russian dance, of which I have only forgotten the name, but so voluptuous and performed in such a way that I do not believe even the young Herodias danced in front of her uncle like that when it was question of obtaining the letter-de-cachet against John the Baptist. Sure of not succumbing to the temptation, I did not fail to rejoice inwardly at being put to such a harsh trial, and I tasted the same pleasure that Saint Anthony must have felt in his temptation. What was my surprise, in the midst of my ecstasy and at a moment when the magician governess was operating on my imagination with the greatest force, and when the door was to be closed to the profane, to see who enter? an aide-de-camp from Lafayette, who had come there on purpose, and whom they had seated for a moment near me, to show me, no doubt, that Lafayette had again become the friend of the house. This happened at the time when Sillery was completing his famous report on the Nancy affair.
The Pamela biography also adds this part right after citing Desmoulins. It does however not cite the place from where it took it from, and I can’t find it inside any of Camille’s works:
This dance, and especially the dancer, made such an impression on him that he said one day: "You, who find civic virtues so easy, have you been exposed to Pamela?" In truth, Camille is too frightened. Lucile was certainly less so. But her husband is afraid, if he shows admiration for Pamela, he will provoke her jealousy.
There exist different accounts regarding which year Pamela was born, with some saying 1773 and some 1776. Both the biography and this study over Pamela do however state the former. If that is so, she would have been not 15 but 17-18 by the time Desmoulins asked to be her guardian and watched her dance.
I’m sorry this is more of an info dump than an ask but the talk about Camille and Sillery (and also him being Danton lite) reminded me of La Belle Pamela which is an old biography about Pamela Fitzgerald/ Lady Edward Fitzgerald I read awhile ago. She was the not officially adopted daughter of Mme. Sillery and also speculated to be secretly actually her and Orléan’s child tho the book disputes this. The book quotes a couple of letters between the Sillerys and Camille including one where he and Lucille are invited to an apology dinner at the Sillerys with Pamela, Robespierre and Péthion (which I assume is Pétion spelled incorrectly) because the Sillerys assumed Camille would be mad that Barére was made guardian of Pamela instead of him. Camille also says some weird things about a Russian dance Pamela (who I believe was 15) does during the dinner. I wonder if this is the “proposition of their daughters”Camille was talking about and also if part of the reason Robespierre was mad at Camille for mentioning being involved with the Orléanists is because at the beginning of the Revolution he was more involved with them than he’d like publicly shared lol (I can’t post screenshots as an anon but the parts of the book I’m talking about start at about page 208 and the biography is free on Google books)
This is a wild ride TM from start to finish, and yeah, I will check it out, but it only made me realize how little I actually know about Camille's shenanigans. I know some stuff, but there seems to be so much mess I don't know about (and this type of mess and gossip is what I love to learn about). So, if anyone wants to share stuff or sources, please do!
