2017 and 2019 First photo under the Tiger of @aiww Circle of Animals/Zodiac second photo: @noticeboardunited poster with exhibition list. Grateful to participate where these artists also participate. Thank you Kate Genever for this photo and this opportunity. Thanks @ivanpatricksmith for the #MigrationResidency in 2017, where i met Kate, my first residency, and where i met great artists and learned a lot about City of Sanctuary and their work. Thanks @camilasoldepool for that connection to Ivan. thanks Yasser Musa of the Image Factory Art Foundation for allowing space, providing equipment for documentation and free use of gallery space for 4 years. Camila came to the Wall 2/ In Word: Kareem Clarke (2015) a piece i did in the LAB 2. Camila who @franquisimoarocha brought to the space. Franco who was introduced to me by Jamaul Roots a phenomenal artist, singer and chef. Jamaul who was introduced to me by Winsom Winsom, an artist and phenom. It is hard to be a Black woman artist in Belize, who is lower middle class, non-academic, and who has persistently called-out and called-in the National Institute of Culture and History for their long standing cultural inertia. So i am grateful for every one who has given me platform. i feel seen and grateful. #blackwomanartist #belizeancontemporary The Notice Board is a contemporary visual art project showcasing the work of international artists in 2 public venues in the Lincolnshire village of Uffington. Featuring ongoing month-long exhibitions, the project aims to connect audiences to the work of diverse artists whilst offering an unusual exhibiting space. All artists involved are responding to the theme: The Lands of the Free? All artworks are editions. Artists are invited to send artwork for one or both venues. The exhibitions are accompanied with information about the artist, their work and their country. The project has been initiated and is curated by artist Kate Genever https://www.instagram.com/p/B2Z75v7F7H1/?igshid=1iwpht4bu8u14

Men pierce the openness of my heart Ungracious with the gift of my body Undone by the treasure that is my mind, Reclaim their manhood calling me clingy Rinsing me off with cold shower and too fragrant soap i reduce men, a single line in a long poem A mere Weak transmission under heavy broadbands of context and obscurity. Invisible to all, except themselves They hide, try But the guilt rides them mercilessly i made you a forever Maybe seen Even important the silent culprit A line in a long poem God, a Black woman You make a dark recess, hidden, your indiscretion from GRUBreload August 17, 2019 Doughtnut = sex (part 1) #belizeancontemporary #beborn image description: an embroidered doughnut on brown cotton (at Ladyville, Belize) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1nXS8rlDDZ/?igshid=1sa8j77majobf

You think you can't be racist because you're nice Know Black people Shit, even had a Black friend back in high school All while you greet me with stereotype-greased fingertips All while you tell me the reason i don't see myself anywhere In books Beauty magazines Is all in my head Must be great to not think about race at all Wish i knew that peaceful, easy feeling, The we-all-one bullshit you keep smearing your eyes with (Excerpt from Biskit = System [part 3] GRUBreload August 17, 2019 #performance #installation #poetry #performance #belizeancontemporary #tbt (at Ladyville, Belize) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1exvnJF2zJ/?igshid=1jtn73xlmofgb

#TBT borderlxne April 1, 2019 The braid was made of extensions i had in April, July, August, November, December 2018. Through this artwork i aim to weave my silenced-ness into a wider, collective narrative. It’s about personal borders bridging political ones. Hair, Black hair is such a sense and sign of identity.  The war wages on and while we go natural or not, there is still a lot of rejection and shaming for using hair extensions: weaves or box braids. Supposedly we pretend to look white with fake fibres, honestly for me it is just a protective style. On the continent it was how we identified, when our ancestors were taken away, they braided seeds in cornrows. African rice is in maroon villages of Suriname.  When we were taken away our hair was shorn and we were scattered by language. We were told our hair needed to be relaxed. We were told and shown and done to a great deal. This action was done 9 days before the originally scheduled date of the referendum on whether to settle the centuries-long Belize-Guatemala dispute at the International Court of Justice (because of court proceedings in Belize on how the referendum was fired, the referendum was held on May 8, 2019) The audacity of this does make one contemplate Chronixx's "Capture Land" that Spain and the UK decided that Belize, (once called British Honduras, before that the Settlement) was either of their possession when all of this is Maya land boggles the mind. Then enslaved Africans were brought here, displaced and dispossessed. And no one asked us anything. Imagine claiming land that aint yours, bringing people as property and plopping them down to work said land and chasing the Indigenous owners off it (in the case of Belize, the Maya) "tale as old as time" huh? Settler mentality abounds. This action was to say Black Womxn erased from territorial concerns are attempting, as we always have done, to reclaim space, while trying to figure out who we are, where we come from, how we talk and how to get back home. #performance #belizeancontemporary #erasure #territorialdispute #settlermentality #displacedpeople #belizeguatemalaterritorialdispute (at Image Factory Art Foundation) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1eIBSeFcf6/?igshid=1y6iopoihmrr

What's perfection? Did several things to side of the cone. Why? Because after stitching anything i find all the things wrong with it and want to loose all the stitches, thankfully resisted the urge somewhat. Anyways today is a lovely day where i am at. Lots of rain in the morning and now lots of sun. My mom trying all to keep my spirits up, so deciding to take my grandma's advice of loving who loves me. Thank you mom. #wip #gawkseries #🍦#embroidery #stemstitch #backstitch #anxietyawareness #💚 #blackfemalecreative #belizeancontemporary #grubreload (at Ladyville, Belize) https://www.instagram.com/p/BzqxZ_3l2R0/?igshid=1r2qjzpvj8jnb

#FBF rejection is a part of the story. As a Black female creative from Belize, (? Belize? Where's that? Believe it or not a lot of people still ask me that) uneducated (i did pursue a licenciatura, an equivalent to a Bachelor's degree, in Mérida, Yucatán, México at the ESAY Escuela Superior de Artes de Yucatan 2005 - 2008 but being the only Black student in the whole school for 3 1/2 years proved too much for my spirit and mental health, so after a bad breakup i left, i did try to go back 2 1/2 years later to continue my studies but the director told me the way only would be if i started all over, they couldn't even find my files, talk about erasure) i just share to show that i put a lot of work in, setting up one of these is a ton of work, from getting recommendations, writing a proposal, application letter etcetera, all things i tried to do while making art, explaining why i am to should also be considered a Belizean contemporary artist, creating space for myself and other creatives (and being called selfish, controlling, ranting self-serving bitch for the LAB, oh well just a regular day in the life of a Black woman) Hang in there Black womxn, you're going to make it. #blackfemalecreative #belizeancontemporary #belizeanliterature https://www.instagram.com/p/BzQ09LoFPJ_/?igshid=14nsgey3xk5q0
