In every work, there is a delineation between main characters and peripheral characters. This is more marked in non-realist fiction, where the story is more bound by conventions of narrative than imitations of history. Main characters, because of what fiction does, are more influential, independent, complex, unlikely, and remarkable than peripheral characters because they are the main characters. It wouldn’t work otherwise.
The conservation of character (save the most stuff for the ones that are important / focus the story around the most consequential characters) means that any reader of more than a few works will automatically consider the characters of a story in two different classes: those who do and those who don’t; paper dolls that interact with the paper scenery VS crayon outlines on the paper scenery.
In works that try to maintain a depth of detail similar to histories/to reality, the sharp delineation of main character from side character can break immersion. Functionally, it’s harder to make a story work if the main characters don’t think or do anything (though people have tried) and the side characters do. But, a work aiming for the emotional stakes of realism needs to convince you that the main characters are part of a greater world populated by fellow human beings.
When main characters ‘get away’ with improbable actions or side characters ‘get shafted’ by being assigned definite traits with no story arc, the expectations of a realistic world clash with the expectations of story. A side character given any details must be important, and if they are given detail without story, then it can feel like a failure of the work (even if the author was just trying to splash in some flavour). A main character loses resonance if their role in the story can only be explained by ‘these events needed to happen’ rather than by the emotional coherent choices of a plausible person. The boundaries between main and side characters must be maintained for a realist (non-formal) fiction to communicate effectively. If it’s formal……you get a bit more lenience when you can just write ‘this is the main character and you know it’ into the text.
Which brings us to: it’s easy to read a metatextual (am I using this right. Probs not.) hierarchy realistic stories. Side characters are, within their own world, designated losers. They can’t have any impact on their own lives, otherwise they’d be main characters. Nowhere is this boundary sharper than in RPGs. NPC story arcs have be handled on the side by one very busy co-author, while PC story arcs each get one author’s full attention. The NPCs are. Well. NPCs. Tulpas. Shapes of shapes of people, shadows of the shadows on the cave wall. They are imperfect imitations of PCs, which are themselves imitations of people that might possibly exist.
That then creates a massive opening in any RPG (video game or tabletop) to play with player or audience expectations about NPCs. If they’re predetermined to be city guards repeating the same line of dialogue forever, you can easily get a strong audience reaction from having them break out of these roles. The NPC is a creation that, ironically, is the character any audience member is most likely to be like. So the event of an NPC (a true NPC merchant in the town square) breaking into the story to influence it is catnip to Moi

FEVER Road epilogues analysis + “traitor” Wooyoung theory + Full Moon
For starters I believe the epilogues take place in the timeline of the Diary Film, in the time between Jongho and Mingi’s fight, when ATEEZ are separated and before Hongjoong reunites them all again.
I must admit the eplogues don’t give much to work with and if you want to jump to the good part AKA Wooyoung’s traitor theory you can just... do it.
Epilogue analysis
Wooyoung epilogue analysys + traitor theory
The Cromer and the Moon
1. Epilogue analysis
These epilogues reinforce the sentiment of the Diary Film of needing to stay together because they have nothing but each other left.
Hongjoong’s dream → Hongjoong’s time
“This place is our own space. We laugh, cry, dance and sing. Each one of our dreams that grew as we fought sometimes. Our secret place that hid us in the world of adults and gave us our dreams. In our own world we gathered like this once again. We don’t know what path to take in the future, but being together again is enough. We can just push through in the future, so there will be no problem.”
This part “In our own world we gathered like this once again. We don’t know what path to take in the future, but being together again is enough”
I believe Hongjoong is talking from the moment they reunite to cross onto “that place”, right before they start the new journey.
Yeosang’s time → Yeosang’s yearnings
“That moment when I felt I was alive for the first time. It was grabbing onto me. I kept leaning on my parents and never hung up on them. But this time I want to be me. Not the me that my parents want, but the path that I want. I’m scared that my heart will burst, but I want to go.”
this part is weird because Yeosang seems to be stuck in the warehouse, wanting to get out. Only after he has broken his violin he’s able to open the door and run away. Basically the same thing we saw on the Diary Film.
Yunho and his brother → Yunho’s dream
“Hongjoong who is a lot like my brother, an my team, who are a lot like me. Thanks to them, I’m able to smile. For my brother, for us, I can’t only be sad. I must achieve me and my brother’s dream.”
Again, not much to work with here. I am curious about Yunho reaching to Hongjoong by himself at the end.
Seonghwa’s memory → Seonghwa’s liberty
“From now on my plan is escaping. In order to do what I really want to do in a world that others have molded, I’m going to run away. The things that I’m hearing right now, it’s going to be the only plan for my life. Because that’s what we want.”
it seems like Seonghwa is back to the place where he was before, but this time against his will. If he was following a strict path before in an attempt to reach his goals, now that he knows he doesn’t have to he feels burdened by it represented by his tied legs and the large amount of clocks on his table.
Jongho’s wandering → Jongho’s despair
“When I had my dream it’s like everything stopped. My dream that crumbled again, can I not grab onto it anymore? When I wanted to give up on everything, Yunho was there to hold my hand. Hyung told me something, and the moment I heard those words I realized that the time that I was about to throw away was actually precious. We have to be together. Now what I have left, is just us."
now the implications of this story is pretty grim and I wasn’t really seeing them coming. after losing both his dreams, basketball and being with hsi friends, he’s completelly hopeless. he regretfully looks back at hs fight with Mingi and as he mentioned in the Diary Film, feels guilty about not being able to reach out to Mingi when he needed it. the way Jongho speaks about ATEEZ now, it seems like he’s the one most desperate to keep them all together.
Mingi's diary → Mingi's wound "I ran like crazy to avoid people. I was scared. At that moment someone's hand grabbed me. I blew a punch at the words "our time together is meaningless". However the one who always tolerated my actions more than everyone else, was Jongho. I stared at Jongho's face blankly. His eyes were saying something: the most meaningful thing, is us."
this is the reconciliation between Mingi and Yunho when Mingi realizes Jongho never gave up on him. This is mentioned in the AR photocard, but it seems like they got back together before they crossed to “That place”.
San’s resolution → San’s FEVER Road
“I acted according to how I felt. I ran again to somewhere that my body led me to. I could not know what was there at the end of that place. At the place where my footsteps stopped I heard something. My heart beated like crazy and I stood at that place. The place where my feet touched, we were there”
I wanted to talk about the shoes and how they look dirty in the “now” but they appear cleana fterwards. I could say this has something to do with what I’ll mention in Wooyoung’s traitor theory, but also we need to have in consideration it could have simply been a matter of the production team.
However if this really is happening at the same time as the other epilogues, this might be San talking about “that” place they all cross to together, which is why he joins them in the scene where Hongjoong is about to turn the Cromer (or has already done so).
The most important part is this though:
now to look onto this “we / 우리” we have to go back to Wooyoung’s own epilogue.
2. Wooyoung’s epilogue + traitor theory
Wooyoung's choice → Wooyoung's fair
there’s so much to unpack here and my head hurts so let’s start wit the title: Woooyung’s fair. In this situation I believe the fitting definition would be:
“without cheating or trying to achieve unjust advantage.”
It seems like Wooyoung wants to make things right and stop hiding. Now, Wooyoung’s epilogue is different to everyone else’s. For starters, some of his flashbacks are in black and white.
We’ve seen the flashbak in the other’s epilogues, but apart from a brief shot from Mingi’s, this is the first time that the black and white flashbacks seem to have any real weight. This makes me wonder if this moment here belongs onto a previous storyline that goes further back than the Diary Film.
this is the only time any of the members have stared directly at the camera. a shot like this makes it feel like Wooyoung is on a different space, on an elevated position than the rest in which he can refer directly to the viewers. This Wooyoung, the Diary Film Wooyoung (maybe), has been hiding something from the rest of the members and he is confessing to us now.
this line: "until they come back to me once again” brings me back to the line in his AR photocard that has been giving me a headache since I read it for the first time:
“[...] But what’s the point of doing this, when I can’t go back. What if I can go back? Hmm… Let’s not think about it. Friends will mock me.”
As I mentioned in my AR pc post, this makes it sound like Wooyoung knows how to go back in time, even before Hongjoong does, and that’s why he believes the others will mock him if he ever speaks about it.
Wooyoung has been shown having a strong relationship with the Cromer (x) and having a bigger role as a “watcher” (x) before so I believe that maybe he’s the one who used it first. before Hongjoong, before the Diary Film events and before the TREASURE arc. What if something happened in his timeline and he used it to get back together? All these times when ATEEZ have mentioned not being able to tell if their reality is real or not, could it be that it was a clue about Wooyoung bringing restarting a journey without them knowing? Also I noticed that as shown in the above picture, as he says this line, he makes the gesture of taking off a mask.
“they all came here for me”
Does he mean “here” as in the Diary Film events? Or to “that place” they are crossing over now?
Another thing that bothered me. When he has that black and white flashback, it belongs to the time before the rest of the members joined, when it was only him, Hongjoong, Seonghwa and Yunho
now however...
are there two different realities that Wooyoung has lived through, is this shot from another world? after all, Wooyoung, San and Yeosang seem to have a special bond (x) so seeing them here together instead of the original group of members in the flashbacks feels... weird. Also in the Diary, it seems like it’s Wooyoung the one bringing them all together, at least with Mingi, who he actively tried to recruit for their group.
the word “us” (우리) shown on San’s epilogue. It’s mentioned too on Yeosang’s diary entry when talking about how he felt when he joined the memebrs:
“[...] Slowly, the word ‘I’, became ‘us’”
It might mean that he was waiting for all the members to come together. Maybe this Wooyoung who already comes from a reality in which they get separated, came to the Diary Film one to bring them all back together once again without the rest being aware of it, and that’s what he means by “us”. This might be why he was waiting for San, and why he was the one to recruit Mingi so fervently in the Diary.
I mentioned on my quick traitor theory post that the ligthing, apart from representing the crescent moon both in shadowing and color, represents how Wooyoung has a hidden side, so it makes me wonder. If he’s finally confessing, why is his face still split in half? Is he still lying to ATEEZ and only telling the viewer? It’s not the first time he’s shown like this though. During the Fellowship VCR, the members faces were shown on screen, and Wooyoung’s face was only shown like this:
once again, part of his face completely hidden away from us
“I’m going back to look for the real me now”
in all seriousness and professionalism, what the hell does that mean. Does he mean starting anew and moving forward from his past self? Or does he literally mean the “Wooyoung” from another reality? Does he actually mean bringing all the ATEEZ together? Because we know they can only work if they are all together.
3. The Cromer and the Moon
Once the puzzle was finished, it read as follows.
“This moves according to the change of the moon. When the crescent moon rises, you can send a message through your dreams, and when the full moon rises, you can move to the next dimension”
Now is not the first time the moon had been theorized to be part of the ATEEZ universe, but is confirmed now to not be something new (which was already unlikely) given the fact that the members could guess what the puzzle was going to say before it was complete.
I believe the “this / 이 것” refers to the Cromer itself.
I remember writing about how the full moon could symbolize a new beginning/journey because if we remember, ATEEZ debuted and started the TREASURE arc on a full moon.
also “sending a message on the crescent moon”, Say My Name and HALA HALA were both released on a crescent moon, and their themes, especially with the morse code could be tied to this.
the next full moon is on November 30th, so maybe we will get a comeback announcement, or simply this was just a clue to tie to the beginnign fo the TREASURE arc.

I'm Standing on a Million Lives - Volume 10
A nice "bridging" volume. We get the end of the Rainbow Stair arc, some downtime and then straight into the Black Work arc! That last arc felt pretty long but I also took a mini reading hiatus that could have contributed to that. Wonder how many volumes this new arc will stretch across...
Ch. 45
-It seems we're going to wrap up the Rainbow Stair arc soon. Again, I kinda wish they just did that in the previous volume but oh well.
-Kusue and Yusuke debate whether it's worth it to stop murdering people after you start to "save your soul." Kusue is a catholic confirmed!
Ch. 46
-So we get a chapter mainly from Cantil's perspective. We learn that he (and Fatina) are older than they look due to creature magic. Malita then becomes Cantil/Fatina's apprentice because she wants a new start. Cantil muses about the time skip mechanic and how he might not even be alive the next time the heroes come around.
-I think it was a good idea to give Cantil's POV. He emphasizes how Yusuke's a kid and still very malleable. Since he's not going to be around he asks Glenda to keep an eye on Yusuke for him. Some of the writing in this part was a little too "all hail Yusuke" for my tastes, but at least there was some healthy skepticism thrown in there.
-We get a very unsatisfying Q&A segment with the Game Master. Learned nothing.
-The players plan for improving the Ihar-Nemore society was interesting, but it all seemed to go a little too smoothly and quickly towards the end. I feel like realistically there would be more push back and these kinds of changes would take years, not months. Also, it was a little too convenient how everything in this fantasy world was an exact parallel to real world crises. Well, I guess there's only so many ways humans can interact/mess up, no matter where you are.
-Was that a Fortnite reference at the end there? Another reminder that Yusuke's a child.
Ch. 47
-We get a nice, in-between arcs, beach episode. Definitely nice to have these "real world" chapters for balance. We also get to see how the characters dynamics shift from world to world.
-While I think Yusuke and Yuka's inner monologues about how they're not used to the "IRL" world are exaggerated, I can kind of relate. Especially during the pandemic, I'm in isolation for the majority of the year, so I'm also the stereotypical, under-socialized geek.
-We see some other players in the USA and the host of the gathering reveals that the fantasy world and the real world are already connected via a small portal. It will be interesting to see how the players pool their knowledge.
-Seeing all these players together makes me wonder how many players died and didn't make it to the gathering. Considering how rigorous the quests have been so far, presumably some people couldn't cut it.
-You can tell this series doesn't prioritize ecchi based on how modestly dressed all the girls were at the beach. That's kind of refreshing.
Ch. 48
-Yaaay new guy! I really like his design/personality. Plus, we get a more balanced group with another adult and male. Funny to see an isekai lover get isekai'd.
-I totally related to Habaki's job struggles. His reasons for not quitting and his thoughts on how his job sapped all his energy and prevented him from reading any challenging books. Too real. (Of course, my job is way cushier than his, but I think these are universal struggles for any full-time employee).
-I guess the Game Master can help Yusuke commit real-world crimes so long as it helps with the mission. Until they revealed that I was like "uh...why is he doing something so risky??"
-It's pretty ridiculous that the Game Master has to drive Yusuke to save Habaki. Can't he just teleport him? lol. Also, another Seaman reference.
-We see the I'm Standing on a Million Lives manga in the background at the bookstore which hurts my brain
-When the people at Habaki's company were like "EVERYTHING'S RUINED!" I was kinda laughing because I work in systems and if everyone busted up our PCs it wouldn't be that big of a deal and we could recover pretty quickly. Luckily, they do acknowledge cloud storage which made it more believable.
Ch. 49
-We get another non-fiction section, this time about the WHO's recommendations for presenting suicide in fiction. Very interesting and mature of the author to acknowledge the problematic nature of his own text. It kind of felt like the disclaimer you see before some shows these days in streaming.
-After the blurb about suicide we get another one about "black" companies and "invincible" people. I had never heard the term "invincible people" in this context before, so that was fascinating. I feel like we don't categorize people the same way in the US. If someone does something dangerous because their life's falling apart, I think we would probably just pull out the psychology terms (narcissistic, personality disorder, sociopath etc.). In Japan they have all these archetypes (NEET, Hikkikomori, Invincible Person). I guess we probably have some, but you don't hear about them as much.
-So, the previous quest was completely pointless because the cities they saved were almost immediately destroyed. Womp wommmmp.
-The fact that "black" = corrupt in Japan is definitely awkward, but I understand it's just a cultural difference...
-The new storyline of a policy being put in place that no longer makes sense but a lot of people have died so there's no turning back, sounds very familiar. I'm sure you can compare it to a lot of things but it reminds me of the Afghanistan war...
-I guess it's a good thing that Malita left Ihar-Nemore when she did! I expect we'll see her again in the near future.

B-Squared’s Top 10 Games of 2020
I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that having something to distract me from the genuine horrors unleashed during 2020 was vital to staying alive, and for me that means a lot of video games! I played…a lot of games last year, but I spent a lot of time playing older games, so I didn’t get a chance to check out a lot of high-profile games that launched this year. Still, I do want to shine a light on the games that managed to resonate with me even a little bit, that somehow managed to launch this year. So let’s get to it!
#10 – No Straight Roads
Rarely have I been struck by a single trailer for a game like I was for No Straight Roads. Produced by industry veterans under a new studio, this is a rare game that’s not quite an indie game from a studio full of newbies, but it’s also not produced with the same kind of budget and resources of a Triple-A project. What do we call this? A Double-A game? Single-A? Regardless, I have to give the team at Metronomik some props for delivering a super stylish game in the midst of a very challenging year. No Straight Roads is a rhythm-based action game where two up-and-coming musicians fight to bring back Rock and Roll to the people of Vinyl City. I absolutely adore this game’s presentation, with each major boss being visually unique and having their own feel that compliments the music they bring to battle. There’s some real energy in these animations with character designs that ooze personality, and being a game about music the soundtrack is great! All that being said though, I have to admit I wasn’t a huge fan of the gameplay when all was said and done. It leans way more on the rhythm side of the equation than I was hoping for, and the action felt very shallow. The fixed camera made some phases of some fights a real problem, and the Switch verison, which I played, is plagued with a lot of issues that really brought the game down for me. If the game interests you at all, give it a shot on PC or PS4; I hear those versions are a lot better. Still, I liked the potential I saw in this game and in this studio, so I can only hope they did well enough to continue on. This definitely feels like the kind of passion project that deserves more recognition.
#9 – Streets of Rage 4
OK, so full disclosure: I didn’t grow up with 2D beat-em-ups. I missed out on all of the greats of the genre back in the day. No Final Fight, no River City Ransom, no Double Dragon, and definitely no Streets of Rage. In more recent years I have tried to dip my toe in the genre, as I did in 2019 with River City Girls. However, I came away from that game a bit disappointed by the overall gameplay and wondered if 2D beat-em-ups were for me. Seeing so much praise heaped onto Streets of Rage 4 had me curious, so I knew I had to try it, if only to broaden my experience in the genre. In many ways, this game is the perfect sequel to a franchise that hasn’t seen any signs of new life in years. It retains what made the series beloved with satisfying combat and challenge, but with a modern touch. The overall art style of the game and music work out pretty well, and I found the act of comboing enemies to be really satisfying. It really doesn’t overstay its welcome either, which is very appreciated in an age of endless timesinks. I also struggled a fair bit with the game, even on Normal, and well after some patches that seemed designed for more casual fans like me. Had this game not had online co-op as an option, I don’t know if I could have beaten the final levels. So my time with this game was pretty rough but despite that I can still see this was a game made with care, and if this game DOES do something for you, there’s plenty of reasons to keep playing on higher difficulties, unlocking more characters and even playing online with friends. Let me put it this way; I’m not all that sure I like the genre and I still liked this game, so I think that counts for something!
#8 – The Wonderful 101: Remastered
…this one is kind of cheating, I’ll admit! I had a lot of trouble thinking up ten games that really stood out to me this year, honestly. That said, I’ll definitely use loopholes to plug one of my favorite games from years ago. Seven years ago, PlatinumGames launched The Wonderful 101 on the ill-fated Wii U, where it bombed harder than just about anything on the system. For those that gave the game a shot, however, they were quick to discover a deep, complex, and charming action game that plays like nothing else out there. Controlling a team of 100 heroes at once, players form weapons out of the various Wonderful One’s bodies, smacking around giant robots and aliens far larger than them with the power of teamwork! How could you not love that, right?! Now, years later, PlatinumGames is aiming to become more independent and their first act was launching a Kickstarter as a way to get this game on newer platforms. While we may never know why Nintendo gave Platinum their blessing to release this game on non-Nintendo platforms (being as this is still, as far as I know, a Nintendo-owned IP), I’m just glad more people can have access to one of the most unique action games I’ve ever touched.
To sell it another way, this game combines the overall aesthetic of Viewtiful Joe with the shape-drawing action of Okami but with a bit of Bayonetta flair on the side. Basically, this is the culmination of everything director Hideki Kamiya has ever worked on. The Remastered version fixes some issues present from the game’s original release, and while I do think they could have gone a bit further with some changes, it is likely the best way to play the game for many. All those sections that made heavy use of the Wii U GamePad are a tad awkward though, but that held true even back on the Wii U anyway…d-don’t worry so much about that, though! I’d still recommend this game to anyone looking for the type of over-the-top action that only Platinum (and occasionally Capcom) can provide! So please consider joining the Wonderful Ones and Unite Up!
#7 – Paper Mario: The Origami King
Discourse around the Paper Mario series is…more than a little rough, honestly! Many fans have been quite vocal about not liking the direction the series has been heading with the last few games, but I went into The Origami King with an open mind and ended up really enjoying the game for the most part! What the game lacked in a developed storyline, it made up for with some really strong character moments and memorable setpieces. Bobby and Olivia are among my favorite partners in ANY of the Mario RPGs, easily, and the entirety of the Great Sea section of the game was a really fun adventure. I love the highly-detailed paper-crafted enemies and locales, and the soundtrack really didn’t have to go as hard as it did. While the battles against common enemies didn’t quite click with me, the boss battles throughout the game constantly surprised me with interesting twists on the ring-based combat and are a real highlight for me. I know this game is pretty divisive amongst Paper Mario fans, but I think the franchise has a pretty bright future ahead of it!
#6 – DOOM Eternal
Fair warning here, but I haven’t quite managed to beat DOOM Eternal at the time of writing this, but what I’ve played so far tells me it definitely belongs here. I think Eternal is hands-down the most intense game I’ve played in a long time. It gets my blood pumping as I dash about, shooting and slicing through demons that are extremely eager to rip and tear me to pieces. I don’t play many shooters in general, so I knew I was going to be in for a rough time, but DOOM Eternal brings it to another level right away. In some respects, I don’t quite agree with various aspects of the core game design that makes the game harder than I think it needs to be at times. The scarcity of ammo, and thus the constant need to use the Chainsaw weapon in order to gain more ammo gets tiring, though that somewhat levels off as more weapons are acquired and players learn of more efficient ways to take out the hordes of Hell. The game’s fantastic soundtrack by Mick Gordon definitely elevates the experience, so it is a huge bummer knowing that he and ID Software had a falling out and he won’t be coming back. I really dig the game’s expansive levels and more focus being put on exploring every nook and cranny for secrets, and certain old-school touches like finding extra lives or cheat codes definitely makes the game feel like it was ripped out of a bygone era and given a modern paintjob at times. Doom is eternal, and with it, so is pulse-pounding shooting action!
#5 – Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition
Compared to the other re-release of an old game on this list, I think this particular title had a lot more time and care put into it…and it also happens to enhance one of my favorite games on Wii as a bonus! Xenoblade Chronicles on Wii was a game that almost passed me by but even years later, I still adored the characters and world it introduced, and I’ve been happy to see what started as game that was almost stuck in Japan eventually grow into a full franchise. I consider the first game to the best in the series, though it was held back by a few issues later games would iron out. Chief among the problems was the visuals, particularly the character models and…wow does ten years make a world of difference. The Definitive Edition does more than just clean up everyone’s faces, it also cleaned up the game’s cluttered UI, made it easier to track quests and materials for said quests, and added some fun optional challenge missions for veterans to tackle. The bow that adorns the top of this package, however, is the epilogue story Future Connected that serves to tie up some loose ends and gives a particular character some great closure. If you love massive worlds to explore, a compelling, at times over-the-top story, and a deep, rewarding combat system, I can’t recommend THIS version of THIS game enough. If you’re going to give the Xenoblade series a try, there’s no better place to start.
#4 – Ghost of Tsushima
When Ghost of Tsushima was first unveiled years ago, I didn’t exactly have a high opinion of it. It seemed like a game that put more emphasis on visuals over gameplay, and I was almost certain it would launch as a PS5 exclusive so why bother getting excited when I probably wasn’t going to be an early adopter of the system? To my great surprise, not only was this game confirmed for PS4, it wound up being one of the prettiest games on the platform and well-optimized to boot, even on my old slim PS4. Playing as lone samurai Jin Sakai, players try to repel the Mongel invasion of Japan, but are forced to adopt less-than-honorable tactics to take on this ruthless enemy. Usually when I play stealth games, I find myself frustrated. I feel weak, or limited, and often the games feel overly harsh. If you get caught once, game over and there’s little salvaging being seen. In Ghost of Tsushima however, there’s a great deal more care put into stealth, and at times I’d argue it’s almost too fun to pass up over the sword play. Very few missions in the game force you to go completely unseen, so stealth just because yet another tool rather than a limitation imposed on you.
Swordplay felt a bit less engaging against common enemies (typically just being Simon Says, switching to the appropriate stance for a given enemy), but the one-on-one duels throughout the game were fantastic and I almost wish the game was all about them instead. I can’t overstate how gorgeous this game is either, with a world that feels like it is breathing, as the wind whips through the tall grass, the moon penetrates fog overtaking a creepy forest, or seeing the smoke from an enemy camp wafting over the distance. Hands-down one of the best-looking games on the PS4, and I’m particularly happy that developer Sucker Punch managed to land a hit with a new IP, as those generally feel more risky as times go on. While I’d argue that Ghost of Tsushima doesn’t really redefine how open-world games should be designed, it is an extremely polished experience and manages to do it well, with plenty of opportunities to grow in a potential sequel.
#3 – Animal Crossing: New Horizons
If there’s any one game that people absolutely needed in 2020, it was Animal Crossing: New Horizons. While there are other games of this type, like Stardew Valley or the Harvest Moon (and later, Story of Seasons games), Animal Crossing is one of the few games that gets mainstream attention while simultaneously running counter to most mainstream gaming trends. No conflict, no combat, no overarching story really…just a game that lets you live your live, day by day on your own terms. I tried getting into the series before with New Leaf but just didn’t stick with it, but New Horizons launched at the perfect time in an imperfect world. Being able to escape the uncertainty and dread that enveloped the world as the pandemic spread for even a little while was a necessity, and thankfully New Horizons had plenty to do to keep idle hands busy. Changes like item crafting and eventually limited terraforming of your island paradise give players so much more agency in decorating their homes and building up something they can be proud of.
We all start as nothing but a small tent on a mostly-empty island, but seeing what people were able to do even in the first few weeks or so was nothing short of amazing. We need more unflinchingly wholesome games in the world, and I’m thankful for Animal Crossing for being there when we needed it, and considering how well it sold and how much post-launch content is expected to be added with time, it remains a sanctuary to return to even now. Just…please let us craft in bulk? Pretty please, Nintendo?
#2 – Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity
Last year, Nintendo released Astral Chain, a game that no one knew about before release, which was revealed and released with very little gaps between them. It was a game I didn’t know I wanted until it was presented to me, and that trend continues this year with Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. The first Hyrule Warriors was a fun, surprising spin-off of the main Legend of Zelda series, and Breath of the Wild was a fantastic game that shook up the core of the Zelda franchise, so in hindsight it really does seem like a no-brainer to combine the two into one package. Age of Calamity, for my tastes at least, cuts down on the repetition and overall stressful atmosphere of the first Hyrule Warriors and instead focused on fleshing out it’s core combat and crafting more creative main storyline missions. It helps that the game reimagines iconic locales from Breath of the Wild from before their destruction, and really makes you feel like you’re fighting through actual places rather than just a collection of random keeps that most Warriors games use.
Bringing in aspects like the Sheikiah Slate and Elemental Rods allows players to control the flow of combat more directly on top of letting them be more creative. Freeze enemies standing over water with the Cryonis rune or burn some grass with the Fire Rod to distract certain enemies, among many other things. Each playable character is also very distinct, even in cases where I could have forgiven the developers for reusing some attacks or traits. For one, Link has different movesets for his Sword and Shield, Spear, and Two-Handed weapons, but none of his attack overlap with the other Champions who use similar weapons. Some people might be put off with certain aspects of this game’s story and ultimately not everyone likes the overall structure of the Warriors spinoffs anyway, but for my part, Age of Calamity was one of the best surprises of the year, unveiled right at the end of the year in the nick of time. Of course, there was one game this year that surprised me more than any other.
#1 – Hades
I’ve known of Supergiant Games for quite a while and very recently began looking through their catalogue of games. They’re known for well-crafted narratives and satisfying combat, and yet when I first saw Hades when it was released in Early Access I was tepid on it. It didn’t look bad or anything, but it didn’t exactly blow me away and even now, I think a random screenshot or quick clip of the game might not do the game justice in explaining the appeal. I already wrote about the game at-length (as my only real non-retrospective blog post of the year, oops!), which you can read here if you want more in-depth praise, but to summarize…Hades is the total package for me.
Playing as Prince Zagreus your end-goal is to escape the puts of Hell, and more specifically get away from your overbearing father, Hades. It’s a rogue-lite, meaning you’re expected to finish the game in one shot and if you die you lose any upgrades you picked up along the way and have to start from scratch…to a point. Hades does allow you to keep a fair amount of items you pick up which can towards small, permanent upgrades or even gifts for various NPCs that can deepen your bond with them. Unlike most other games of this type too, the story constantly moves forward, even after death. The game is about dying over and over and then dusting yourself off to try again, all the while other characters remark on your progress or lack thereof. I grew to really enjoy this cast of characters, a fun spin on the Greek pantheon, paired with excellent voice acting for the entire cast. From the imposing, if somewhat sultry Megaera, to the nervous wreck that is the maid, Dusa, to the pompous ass Theseus, I looked forward to each new run just to learn more about this world and those within it. For once, death wasn’t really a punishment, but a reward, and just part of the process.
Of course, incredibly satisfying combat is ALSO part of the process and it just gets…addicting; muttering “one more run” over and over as you try out different weapons and boons, discovering what works well together and what doesn’t. While at first beating the game felt like it would never happen, I grew from my failures, adapted and eventually overcame. Multiple times. If you want the “full” Hades experience, this game can really demand a lot of time out of you but at the same time it stays fresh, so I can’t really complain. With new gameplay mechanics unlocking as time goes on, to the Pacts of Punishment players can trigger if they want a bit more challenge (or a lot more), Hades is that rare game that just keeps giving and giving. Before I knew it, I had dumped well over 50 hours into it, and I STILL need to get back to the game if I want that epilogue.
Compared to every other game that came out this year, Hades is the one game that grabbed me from moment one and would not let go until I hit credits. When I wasn’t playing this game, I was counting down the minutes until I could play it again, and let me tell you that is rare for me these days. At this point, Hades is clearly the breakthrough hit for Supergiant and I couldn’t be happier. The fact that this game got to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with industry titans at The Game Awards is kind of surreal, but I can’t think of many who deserve that recognition more. It helps that Supergiant is a studio that actually takes care of its employees, which is way rarer than it should be. I don’t mean to hype this game up like it’s the cure for COVID or anything, but I mean it with all my heart that this was the best game I played this year, and I’d recommend it in a heartbeat. I couldn’t stop talking about it for months after playing it, just ask my friends! So yeah, it’s pretty OK I guess.
CONCLUSION
I’m sure my Top 10 List looks a lot different from most out there, but that’s what’s great about games! So much variety and so much quality no matter where you look! Every year, without fail, there’s always at least a small handful of games that come out that I don’t get to, and try as I might I’ll never trim that backlog down. I want to keep playing games for as long as I can, trying out so many different experiences and seeing what this wonderful pastime can offer. For a good chunk of 2020 I was more than a little down, not just because of…you know, but a lot of games that were coming out weren’t appealing to me. That said, seeing as this was the year of shadow drops and announcing things at the last minute, I ended up loving a bunch of games I hadn’t already spend months hyping myself up for, which definitely helped to lift me up this year. Already, 2021 has a lot of titles I’m anticipating though, so it’s sure to be an exciting year.
Happy Gaming.

A YEAR IN REVIEW: 2019.
Oh wow it’s two hours to midnight. I’m about to enter my fifteenth year of existence and second decade turn I’ve been alive to witness. Guess it’s time for my first annual year in review of fanfiction <3
WORD COUNT:
This year in total I wrote 150,065 words! Not even including the fanfictions I wrote for other fandoms throughout the year. This was all in a few months too. Damn, can’t wait to see where 2020 takes me if this is my writing prowess now.
The Breakdown:
Bloodlines took the cake at 71,593 words. Makes sense, I wrote that first and actually had it going a bit before I got the idea for Shadow of the Sith. It’s not obsolete just yet, but is currently on hiatus. Still one of my most written for projects. Means I’d been working on that since August. Startinglingly, the latest chapter was in October. That means that whole endeavor took two months to write 71.5k.
Shadow of the Sith is close behind at 47,995 words. With how I went from writing 2k word chapters to the latest being 7k words, it’s valid how the number jumps so much chapter-to-chapter. This one I’ve been working on since early November, and the most recent one was added today. That’s a month and some days worth of writing 48k words guys :0.
The Heritage prompts roll in at 15,657 words. I posted rather sporadically for this because most ended up being abandoned oneshots while I worked on Bloodlines and later, Shadow of the Sith. Still, it’s nothing to sneeze at and I’m rather proud of the work I put in.
The Made of Star Dust universe is at a haughty 11,777. Given this was written long before I’d even gotten the privelege to play Shadow of Revan, so some stuff is inaccurate but other than that a very ambitious project that I intend to pick up at some point. For now, it remains on hiatus.
The oneshots round us out at 3,043. This includes Hierarchy for the time being because it consists of a Khaak/Lana oneshot and that’s it. Not disappointed here, and I’m rather happy it even reached that.
NEW THINGS I TRIED.
I tried Star Wars the Old Republic out again, and obviously I flourished here. The community is so kind and compassionate, not to mention inspiring. I tried out the Jedi Consular storyline, fell asleep halfway through, and then my Consular was the Barsen’thor.
Oh you mean writing wise.
I definitely extended my writing. My word counts shot up this year from 500 words in 2018 to 8k words just a week or so ago. I’ve improved my storytelling to include characters and personalities I’ve never encompassed before. Took my hand at writing more romance, and successfully.
I visited the TrollHunters fandom for a period of time and rather enjoyed it, I have one 8k fic going on it’s fourth month on hiatus on my AO3 page. I joined my first actual hate for a show and that materialized in Voltron: Legendary Defender.
I joined AO3. Didn’t find immediate success but I found some of my favorite authors there. My account is here: euphoria_starrs.
I joined tumblr for the first time. Had never experienced it before but now it’s my main media. Other than the problematic side of tumblr, I like the people here.
FAVORITE THING I WROTE THIS YEAR.
Definitely Shadow of the Sith. I accomplished so much with it already and it’s not even near done but people enjoy it, and it’s been one of the biggest succesful endeavors I’ve ever done. Thanks for taking time to read it guys <3
FAVORITE FIC I READ THIS YEAR.
*Takes a deep breath* Well here we go I guess.
@cavalier-life‘s Collateral Damages. It’s so artfully written, and for a ship I definitely didn’t think I’d grow to love as much as I do now. The characterization is beautiful, and the conflicts are real and believable. I adore Selirah with my whole heart, thank so much for writing it! Have definitely binged chapters repeatedly until the words are swimming on the page at two in the morning.
@cinlat‘s...whole library. Particularily Howl In the Night (I intend to get to reading Heart on a Trigger, just haven’t had the time yet) because of the untouched territory it delves into. I love the way you handled the story, and it’s truly heartbreaking at the end. Your oneshots are to die for as well. But Our Own pulled at my heartstrings. I’d lie if I didn’t say I was rooting for Nahir the whole time.
@melissagt‘s Not Afraid Anymore. I think I already commented on it but I’ll do it again. Yet another ship I didn’t think I’d sail but as I got deeper and deeper into Andronikos, Theron and Lelu’s relationship I just let the sail go. I love the story and how they get accustomed to each other and just how gritty it is. I definitely stayed up late at night to finish reading it.
@lumielles‘s Guilt By Association, Outlander Day and Need a Minute. I haven’t had the time to read much more of Idan’s story, but Aramys and Theron break my heart with every oneshot and story of yours I read. I love it because it’s so tasteful, and absolutely bittersweet at the best of times. I look forward to learning more about this family :)
@greencrusader13‘s All Were Innocent Once. I adore this story because it was one of the first ones I read in the fandom, and it was beautiful. Cirak and Tyar are such three-dimensional characters, and I can’t wait to learn more about the others present.
Any others I found but for those who don’t have tumblr accounts can be found on my Fic Recs Page. Flirting With Desire (Sirius Ordo), and Someone To Fight For (Bamfbugboy) always tear at my heartstrings whenever I read them. If ya’ll like to cry, here they are.
WRITING GOALS FOR 2020.
1. Definitely finish Shadow of the Sith. Mellena and Theron’s story desperately needs to be told, and I will go down with this ship! There are a bunch of other characters worthy of their chapters in here as well, and I really want to write for Knights. Just have to get through Shadow of Revan and Ziost and we’re in the clear.
2. Start Shan. You guys are so infatuated with this post that I figure it deserves to be written. I was going to anyways, but goddamn ya’ll are still reposting it so I’ll see if I can do the plot justice. Currently, the PC is a sith inquisitor named Liv but that could change soon.
3. Finish Bloodlines? I’m not sure if anyone’s particularily enjoying it, but I started it so I’ll finish it. I think. Maybe.
4. Start love interest specific stories. I tend to meander into whole stories of a bunch of OCs and their love interests (see: Bloodlines/Shadow of the Sith), but in 2020 I think I’ll try to appeal to smaller fanbases with certain stories. I’m looking at writing a Mandalorian-centric Ba’shira/Torian fic, a slight rewrite of the Trooper story for Hakiojkl/Aric, a Sith-centric one for Lana/Khaak, a shorter one for a currently unnamed female Sith Warrior/Pierce, shorter one for a currently unnamed female Sith Inquisitor/Andronikos, short one for Bisauur/Zenith and a short one for Naji/Felix. Maybe one for Koth, but goddamn there isn’t a signal fic I can find on him.
5. Write Bad Girls Club. I don’t know why I made this a thing, but goddamn it’s a thing now and I love it. Kind of love the idea of some younger female bounty hunters running around the galaxy and causing chaos.
6. Possibly write a Theron/Outlander/Lana story. Why? I’m not sure but no one has done it yet and with the chemistry Theron and Lana have in-game already plus the chemistry they have as friends if you romance them can’t be easily passed up. Not high on my list of priorities, but it shall be done.
WORD OF THANKS.
My thanks goes out to this list of wonderful people:
@the-sith-in-the-sky-with-diamond, @greencrusader13, @oakstar519, @a-muirehen, @shabre-legacy, @starstrucknerdbatkid, @swtorpadawan, @elaphaemourra, @theherooftython, @anchanted-one, @sheyshen, @roguescarlett, @insufficient-focus, Dragonheart on Discord, Sidhe Vicious and Necril on Discord!! You guys are so great for believing in little 14 year old me and taking a chance on roleplaying with me and reading my fics. You’re so appreciated <3
HAPPY NEW YEAR, AND GOOD LUCK ON YOUR NEW ENDEAVORS!

BoJack Horseman Season 5 *Spoilers*
I just finished BoJack Horseman season 5, and as always fuuuuuuuck.
1) I'm so amazed by the continued representation of Asexual People. 🖤💜🦄 It is so amazing to see such great ace characters with storylines that are both entertaining but also explore the struggle of being ace in a hypersexualized world.
2) The scathing commentary on our culture, society and Hollywood is brutal and largely on point. I really want to talk about Gina's decision not to report. It was very realistic and also heartbreaking. "I don't want you to be the thing I'm known for". She felt she had to choose between justice and her career and this is so real. We get so obsessed over what happened to people that reporting, even if you are one of the few that get some justice, you are frequently expected to continue to rehash what was one of the most traumatic experiences of your life, this is especially true of famous people. And then, when the abuser gets to come back, it just reaffirms that this will never go away. It makes it hard if not impossible to move on. Thus, our cultural obsession on getting all the public details but not actually ensuring accountability and lasting repercussions for abusers and rapists reinforces rape culture and a culture of silence. This is what we see with Gina. We see a woman who doesn't want the criminal actions of a powerful man to become her life. It sucks.
3) The portrayal of addiction on this show continues to be so on point yet doesn't enforce stigma. It is real and shows how it could happen to anyone without denying that addiction, while difficult, is not an excuse to do bad shit to others.
4) Mr. Peanutbutter is a coward and embodies a lot of people, especially cis-men who think they are "nice guys" but don't listen to people's boundaries/consent, especially women, and aren't honest due to their own unaddressed fear of abandonment, self loathing, feelings of inadequacy.
5) Diane is trying so hard her resignation to the reality of the lack of accountability in the world and her own shit behavior is painful. She's drowning between her ideals and society. I can't help but empathize with her, even if she has done shitty things.
6) FUCKING Hell am I happy to see a mainstream show highlight how shit and sketchy The US's for profit adoption sector is. Most countries have banned that shit as human trafficking. As we see with Princess Carolyn it doesn't serve the perspective parents nor the birthmother/family. And I'm a little terrified of what type of parent PC is going to end up being.
7) BoJack continues to show just how toxic Toxic Masculinity is to everyone. His inability to just admit that he needs help literally almost killed a woman. Therapy is important. Trauma, pain, and grief can and will eat you alive and it's important to know and admit when you need a professional to help you through.
8) BoJack is a cautionary tale. We aren't supposed to like him. We may identify with aspects of him, but we shouldn't excuse him. BoJack is awful. Most of the characters in the show are maps of what NOT to do. The show is amazing and well done. Nonetheless we aren't meant to idolize this characters and this season the show runners explicitly told us as much.

tagged by @meonlyred. time to expose myself as a fake gamer girl. i am too tired to think of other people to tag but if you are reading this and you play video games i would like to know what your answers to these questions are. i am tagging @you.
favorite game from the last 5 years? pillars of eternity 2 & the sims 4. someone please resuscitate the singleplayer story-focused rpg where choices change the course of events and i don’t spend 90% of my game on fetch quests. not everything has to be “open world”. i am so tired.
most nostalgic game? goldeneye. i live for slappers only bighead mode.
game that deserves a sequel? mass effect andromeda. i enjoyed the game and it was a great concept that suffered for behind the scenes bungling and it really deserves a redemption arc in the form of a sequel with adequate time and resources and good direction.
game that deserves a remaster? kotor. but maybe i’m just saying that because that’s the game that hooked me on games (with a little help from @lwsupremacy) and every game i have played since has been a futile attempt to recapture the magic of being trapped on taris for 3 days because i couldn’t figure out that i needed to go to that sith party and steal a uniform and also finding out that i was the villain all along.
favorite game series? kotor & dragon age.
favorite genre? story-focused rpgs or anything with really detailed character customization.
least favorite genre? everything else. i don’t actually like video games i just like combining interactive fiction and dress up.
favorite song from a game? idk man. i really liked mass effect 3′s soundtrack i guess???
favorite character from a game? the player character. i’m a self-centered ho who is not too proud to admit to this.
favorite ship from a game? i’ll always be a slut for shakarian. also i am deep in doc x rea hell. i don’t necessarily ship him with every jedi knight in swtor (he is not for everyone) but i sure as shit do with mine. i’ll
favorite voice actor from a game? they are all magic. i have an especial weaknes for brandon keener as garrus vakarian and claudia black as morrigan, but they are all goddamn magic. also all the voicework in pillars of eternity 2 is especially magic and i’m not just saying that because i’m so weak for the cast of critical role.
favorite cutscene? all of the cutscenes in the citadel dlc for mass effect 3???
favorite boss? does it have to be a final boss? is this question about mechanics or story??? who cares this is my blog i do what i want. the answer is the broodmother from dragon age: origins. that is the creepiest shit that still elicits a visceral reaction from me even now. even just thinking about it.
first console? the first console i ever owned personally was an xbox gifted to me for christmas at age 16. i had asked for an n64 because i was feeling nostalgic and wanted to play goldeneye and chrono trigger and whatever the fuck else i used to play in the brief moments when my brother would allow me to touch his console, but my mom could not find an n64 since they were a decade old at that point so she bought me an xbox and a couple star wars and james bond games instead. i spent my entire christmas break consumed by kotor and that is how i started really playing video games at all. thanks mom!
current console or consoles? fuck consoles. sorry horizon: zero dawn but i am pc only.
console you want? i want my brother to give my n64 back so i can play goldeneye. YOU HAD YOUR OWN N64 SCOTT. WHY DID YOU TAKE MINE???? KEEP TRACK OF YOUR SHIT AND STOP TAKING MINE. IT’S BEEN 8 YEARS AND I’M STILL SALTY YOU LIL BITCH.
place from a game that you’d like to visit? all the places in video games are like mad violent and i am painfully aware that in video game world i would be a useless, expendable npc. much as i’d like to see nar shaddaa or the citadel or tevinter i would like to remain alive, out of prison, and out of slavery more.
place from a game that you’d like to live in? i just remembered stardew valley. i could live there i guess. i wouldn’t say i’d like to but if i have to pick a place from a game.... stardew valley.
ridiculous crossover that would never happen but would be super fun? i want to play a mass effect prequel that is garrus as a citadel cop teaming up with nancy drew in a very weird point and click adventure. what nancy drew is doing there is never explained. why c-sec is working with a 16 year old human girl is also not explained. nothing is explained there is no time for explanations there is a mystery to solve.
book that would make a good game? brandon sanderson’s mistborn series. honestly anything he writes has a fun system of magic with enough definition to translate in an interesting and playable way to a video game mechanic, but i think mistborn would be the most fun. although the color shit from warbreaker would be very visually striking i think.
show/movie that would make a good game? the good place. it could be the weirdest and most fun game. some kind of weird patchwork of minigames that somehow forms a cohesive narrative.
games you want to play? cyberpunk 2077 looks pretty good. i usually only get excited about bioware games or games my friends have already played and told me i would like. i am not that hyped for anthem because i hate multiplayer outside of my circle of three friends who i don’t mind holding back with how awful i am at video gaming. i’m still gonna buy it and play it and i am very open to being pleasantly surprised but i can’t bring myself to be hyped.
have you gotten 100% completion in a game? any game that can be completed that i have actually finished playing, i have completed 100%. no fetch quest too small or too annoying bitch.
have you cried over a game? i cried a whole lot on my third day trapped in the upper levels of taris, unable to figure out how to get down the elevator to the lower city. also other times because of emotional beats in the storyline or whatever. i am a human person with skin and feelings.
what power-up or ability would you want in real life? i really enjoy the direct correlation between effort and achievement and would like to adopt that in my real life. in the sims, when my sim spends 8 hours writing they have a completed novel at the end of it. they put it in the mailbox and then they get royalties for a while. that sounds nice!!!! a specific ability though... i ought to say healing or something actually useful that could help people but if i’m being perfectly honest i wanna force leap. i wanna zoom.

With all that going on, you will also have to deal with and balance the morale of the people in your colony, as they will hold elections and can vote you out if you don’t take care of their needs. These can be things like crime, food supplies, living conditions, social policies and more.

My Pride, My Joy, My love: The “Original Character” Trend
I remember when I was enjoying my life as a Middle schooler (over here we call it grade 6) I enjoyed a lot of the internet during that time. I became a fan of Minecraft and enjoyed all the modern cartoons at the time. Me and my friends were very into Five Nights at Freddy’s and during that time period is where a lot of good late childhood memories formed for me. All these media has made me into the creative person I am today, despite my career choice of the moment, I’m very proud as an artist. Part of that pride is my creativity to make OCs (Original Characters). Like many other artists growing up to these trends, I would have all these ideas and draw them out in my notebook. Whenever I get home from school, I would finish my assignments just so I have the freetime to play Doll Dress up games to create stories and characters (This was such a highlight of my life tbh and im not ashamed!! DOLL DIVINE MY LOVE!) Getting to play with these games and playing around with MS Paint was my humble beginnings of becoming an artist online (mygash i sound like im famous but im not XD)
A confession, the first time I made my own original characters is when I was still dreaming about playing Minecraft [ yes, I dreamt about playing Minecraft one day because my dad won’t let me play it and we had to buy it heheh silly but I was real ecstatic when I was able to play it on mobile-- but playing it on PC, I was super happy like- this is literally a dream come true for me y’all, I can’t express my happiness ] I would create what my Minecraft skin would look like, I never really told anyone about that. But later on I slowly created a story behind these characters for my own pleasure and fantasy. It feels so wonderful like I’m back to my kid self being in my own world.
This eventually became something I got stuck with until now, creating original characters with their own storylines but never really posting them about it. I made Gemsonas (Steven Universe fan characters), Five Nights at Freddy OCs, Yandere Simulator, and many more until they became their own original thing for me.
I can’t really count how many characters I have made through playing online games but they we’re mostly revolved around my personality and my friends. As I matured I realized how cringey that is hahah I guess I don’t want to look back at my personality back then even though nothing much change hehe. Though I still like how some of the characters I have made reflect what I am and what I wanted to be you know; that goes for almost any character ever made by someone similar to me, a character to reflect them in a way or project something they want to be someday. Nowadays I make characters that reflect more to the stories I create so it would be more fitting for them. My love for Original Character making came from a place where I dream of being famous (who doesn’t dream about that right?) I thought the ideas I have made were unique and at the time not have been thought of. As much as I want to share these ideas there was no where I shared these but between friends and myself, mostly just myself. I tried wattpad but somehow I never got to finish the stories. I tried Deviantart but right when I think I want to post I refuse to because I know the internet is a harsh place and my skills were not as extraordinary like the people I support. So ever since then, as much as I crave the attention, I never really pushed to get it. Instead all these characters I made are for my own pleasure. And I think that’s okay, I did these art for myself and it makes me super happy to come up with ideas and concepts. It shows how alive I am. It also worked in my favor because I improved as an artist too. I’m not the only one who feels this of course but I don’t know, this creative part of me is very strong. I was really happy when I started my Instagram, I don’t have many followers but I don’t care, the internet showed me it’s okay to just share whatever you want. Though I still feel anxious whenever I post, I mean there isn’t anything wrong with the post but what if someone saw it and many more. And like I use the hashtags to get notice but also not too much to get really noticed. I contradict myself a lot with that hahaha but I’m slowly just not caring about it. You can say this trend was my comfort and coping mechanism, I do enjoy self-insert stories and projecting my self into these characters. So far that’s how much I can express my love for doing this trend. The original character trend is still as strong as ever and it’s more developed hahah. I admire those artists that indulge a lot to their characters even without a piece of media to fully express their world. That’s why I still fancy this topic a lot. I can talk about my original characters for a whole week but that sounds super annoying tho no? HAHAHA Anyway I am proud of this part of me and maybe I can express that part of me more soon when I feel it’s right. Right now I’m doing fanart but then it will be fanworks then original stuff. I have a bunch of original content made but it may take a long time to present it well. My love and joy for this is boundless ahahah that’s all I can say Extra: The pics are from my gamer childhood (I am best dress up gamer!!!) and ofc the characters I made throughout that time. Not gonna lie but looking at the old art I made as a gr6 is S U P E R C R I N G E. I want to share more, believe when I say I have TONS of characters but I think I will regret every moment once I scroll my own page in the future HAHAHA.
I didnt draw this, my friend drew it for me during gr7?? Check him out, he’s a great artist! Insta: @/hitdhits, Deviantart: @/HitDJ
oh and if somehow someone got interested in my insta @/cupideya1314

If you could change (or rather fix) the background and/or paternity of any five characters, who would they be?
Sam McCall - While I liked early Julexis, what the writers did to them pissed me off and turned me off of the couple. Sam understandably kicked Julian out of her life, but has nothing to do with the rest of her Jerome relatives? I liked her scenes with Ava when she was sick with toxoplasmosis. She and Kiki interacted a lot and got along well when Sam dated Kiki’s dad Silas, but they don’t acknowledge the fact that they are cousins. She doesn’t interact with Lucas or even babysit her baby brother Leo. What was the purpose of making Julian Sam’s dad?
Franco - I hate this character for many reasons and the only time I liked him (as played by Roger Howarth) was when he and Nina were together pre-baby issue. James Franco’s Franco was a fun psycho villain. I hate all of his paternity rewrites. First, he was Betsy Frank’s son. Nope, he is Jason’s fraternal twin via Alan and Susan Moore. Wrong, he is Heather Webber’s son by Scott, despite not looking like either one. I like Roger Howarth, but he is miscast in this role. I would rather Franco be Betsy Frank’s with the probably abusive creep Jim Harvey (who he resembles) rather than tarnish the Baldwins (Scott, Karen, Serena, Gail and Lee), even by association.
Nelle - There is so much wrong with this character. If they were going to connect her to Carly, she should have been a Spencer relative, capitalizing on the fact that she previously played a younger version of Luke and Bobbie’s sister Pat, and not a Benson. While in her early days, I liked that she was like a young Carly set on revenge. They could have made her Carly’s daughter somehow, either from pre-Port Charles days in Florida (possibly from sleeping with Reese’s dad) or a previously unknown twin of Michael’s. That way we wouldn’t have had to suffer through the train wreck that was Melle. Or if they wanted her to be an original character, why not utilize the chemistry she had with Nina and reveal that she was Nina and Silas’ baby that was supposedly miscarried after what Madeline did?
Avery - Like many of you, I wish Avery was Morgan’s daughter. It wouldn’t change much of her story. Carly would definitely try and rig the paternity test. Maybe we wouldn’t have suffered through more MorKiki and Ava wouldn’t have been indirectly responsible for Morgan’s death.
Griffin - I would make him Anna’s son with Duke, the child she supposedly miscarried when Olivia Jerome pushed her in the elevator. In one of Olivia’s last scenes, she made an ominous remark about Griffin’s mother. It would be amazing if she knew that Griffin was Anna’s and kept that secret out of revenge against the woman who “stole” Duke from her. Plus, he is basically Anna’s son already with how protective and caring she is for him because he is Duke’s son. Also, Robin and Emma already see him as a brother/uncle-like figure. If Josh Madden, Erica Kane’s famous abortion, could be transplanted into her doctor’s wife as an embryo, why not the same treatment (in a good way) for Anna and Griffin?
****BONUS**** If we are stuck with Anna having a child with Faison, I would rather it not be the obvious path - Valentin lied about it being a girl and it will be Henrik/Peter August, who we know is Faison’s son and cohorts with Valentin. I don’t mind Peter being Faison’s son and in league with Valentin, because we all knew the boy was shady af. However, I would prefer if Anna did have another daughter and it was revealed to be Dr. Kim Nero. She looks a lot like Anna. It would give Tamara more story to work with and more avenues to take the character of Kim in. Kim and Oscar would have more family (Henrik/Peter, Britt, Maxie’s baby, Robin, Emma, baby Noah, Alex Devane Marick, Gabriel Devane, Aidan Devane).
What five storylines would you rewrite? And how?
Sam’s paternity/Port Charles re-visited - As I previously mentioned, I would change Sam’s paternity since she doesn’t utilize her Jerome heritage. I would have made her Ryan Chamberlain’s daughter. Ryan is Kevin’s dead psycho twin brother. Ryan would still fit in with Alexis’ bad boy dating profile and it would make since that she would be a dead ringer for Livvie Locke. I also would have kept Kevin as Livvie’s father since it was a disservice to Port Charles and its fans to rewrite such a story. I would have kept the nods to Port Charles but they could have left out the supernatural elements, which were only brought into the later seasons of the show. Port Charles did start out as a show about young doctors (including Scott’s daughter Karen Wexler) and nurses working at General Hospital, when the main soap went to more mob-related stories. There were a lot of crossovers to begin with. Also, there would be mention of Scott and Lucy’s adopted daughter Christina.
Nikolas’ storylines 2014-2016. I’m not sure how I would write it, but Nikolas wouldn’t take over ELQ, be involved involved in “Jake Doe”/Drew/Jason drama, try to blackmail or kill Hayden, fake his death, or be killed by Valentin for Cassadine holdings. I don’t mind Nik getting some dark Cassadine on, but don’t destroy his character like these years did.
Port Charles Mayoral Campaign of 2018. I would have kept Laura as the anti-Charles Street development candidate (screw you, Frank!). Olivia would have been in-character and struggling between supporting her husband Ned and fighting for the down-to-earth people living on Charles Street who are a lot like her Bensonhurst neighbors. Laura would win, despite the dirty tricks pulled by Jim Harvey. Ned would run a clean campaign. Julian would run his bar and have little to do with the story. Alexis would assist with Laura’s campaign, but otherwise stay out of politics and Charlie’s Pub.
There would be no Friz relationship. Elizabeth would have dated Griffin instead (sorry, Grava).
Sonny wouldn’t have killed AJ. While I enjoyed the distance between Michael and Sonny (as well as Carly) because of Sonny’s actions, it didn’t last long enough. Sonny escaped the consequences yet again. Also, there would be no Ava/Sonny sex on AJ’s grave, which would mean that Avery would have to be Morgan’s. Michael would still have good relationships with all of his parents. We would get to see AJ’s reactions to “Jake Doe” being “Jason” before finally revealed to be Jason’s twin Drew, as well as the real Jason being alive. I would need all of Alan’s sons to reconcile their feelings toward each other. AJ would be an attentive uncle to Jake, Danny, and Scout.
Three most annoying retcons in General Hospital history?
Franco’s crimes are a result of a brain tumor. Such bullshit.
Anna willingly sleeping with Faison when she is a WSB trainee to get info and having his child, who is probably Henrik/Peter. I may not have been alive when Robert, Anna, and Robin first came on in the 80s, but many fans have said that a flashback showed that Anna was a virgin when she first slept with Robert. Writers, stop screwing with GH history.
Ignoring Sam’s relationships with Silas and Patrick in favor building up her relationship with Drew. While I did like Siam, I did feel they were a rebound. But Samtrick was a real relationship and it was going very well until Carly outed “Jake Doe” as “Jason”. Sam was still her investigative, risk-taking self and a mom back then, compared to whoever she is now. Yes, I feel like she would have went back to Jason and Patrick to Robin, in the end.
Favorite incarnations of characters who have been played by multiple actors?
Tamara Braun as Carly Benson Corinthos (I love all Carlys, except for Jennifer Bransford, but Tamara is my fave)
Kirsten Storms as Maxie Jones
Tyler Christopher as Nikolas Cassadine
Julie Marie Berman as Lulu Spencer-Falconeri
John Ingle as Edward Quartermaine
Constance Towers as Helena Cassadine
Aaron Refvem as Morgan Corinthos
both Sean Kanan and Billy Warlock as AJ Quartermaine
both Jonathan Jackson and Greg Vaughn as Lucky Spencer
both Dylan Cash and Chad Duell as Michael Corinthos III
tie between Emma & Sarah Smith, Kali Rodriguez, Lexi Ainsworth, and Lindsey Morgan as Kristina Corinthos-Davis (I’ve loved all of the girls who played Krissy since I started watching GH)
Five character deaths that destroyed you?
Georgie Jones
Emily Quartermaine
Alan Quartermaine
Lila McCall
Nathan West
Honorable Mentions: BJ Jones, Jason Morgan’s not-death, Sabrina Santiago, AJ Quartermaine
If you could bring back any characters, which ones would they be? And why?
Emily Quartermaine - pointless death for tragedy and ratings, she is a moral compass for many characters, need more Quartermaines, doctor
Nikolas Cassadine - part of me believes he is still alive, I need him to take back his inheritance and home from Valentin, need more Cassadines, need him to work things out with Britt (since he did far worse) or get back together with an alive Emily
Georgie Jones - pointless death for tragedy and ratings, moral compass for Maxie, Dillon’s OTL
Dillon Quartermaine: TPTB did the character, fans, and Robert Palmer Watkins dirty, need more Qs, more Crimson storylines, he could still be a filmmaker
Hayden Barnes - Elizabeth needs family in PC, need a resolution (and hopefully a reunion) for HayFinn, update on her and HayFinn baby, friendship/maternal relationship with Spencer, still needs to meet biodad Jeff and siblings Steve and Sarah
Lucky Spencer - need to build up the Spencer family, he needs to be (and be seen doing it) a father to all three of his boys, help rein in Lulu’s Spencer traits, help build up the PCPD, support and call out Elizabeth when she needs it, meet his niece Charlotte
Thomas “Tommy” Hardy Jr. - member of Hardy family, Elizabeth needs family in PC, doctor, brings in more diversity
Laura Spencer Collins - Lulu needs her mom’s guidance, she should be mayor, her other grandkids need her too, she needs to bring Spencer home, she and Kevin have barely been married before she left
Spencer Cassadine - he’s so much fun to watch, keeps Valentin in check, needs to reclaim his home and fortune, should reconcile with cousin Charlotte, we might actually see Liz’s kids if he is around, love his relationships with his extended family
Britt Westbourne - emotional support for mom Liesl after Nathan’s death, reconcile and potentially bond with Maxie and cousin Nina over loss of Nathan and love for Naxie baby, resolve things with Nikolas if he is alive, friendship/maternal relationship with Spencer, doctor, meet and have some sort of relationship with half-brother Henrik/Peter, friendship with Brad
Kristina Corinthos-Davis - need more Davis Girls, LGBTQ representation, missing out on stories regarding her families, reconcile with Alexis, potential for character growth
basically the whole Scorpio-Drake family (Robert, Robin, Patrick, Emma, baby Noah, Dr. Noah, and Dr. Matt Hunter) because they are one of my favorite families, doctors, Anna needs more family
more Quartermaines than those listed above for obvious reasons
What storylines would you like to see General Hospital tackle?
big event stories that we had 10-15 years ago that affected the whole community and characters (both contract and recurring) who don’t usually interact shared scenes
better representation of mental illness
more diversity
better LGBTQ representation and stories - utilize the characters they have and introduce Joss & Oscar’s friend
autism (Night Shift did a story with Jagger and his son Stone)
school shooting/gun control plots (for the younger characters) because of the ongoing relevance
If you watched any other ABC soaps (All My Children, One Life to Live, Port Charles, Ryan’s Hope, Loving, The City and I’m including SoapNet’s General Hospital: Night Shift), which characters (living at the time of the soap’s demise) would you bring to GH for a visit/story since they share the same universe?
Dr. David Hayward, All My Children - Anna’s ex-husband and father to her late daughter Leora, cardiologist/cardiac surgeon, a fun and dynamic villain to root for, has brought people back from the dead via Project Orpheus
Dr. Kyle Julian, General Hospital: Night Shift - doctor, adopted brother Leo was Maxie’s heart surgeon in 2007, LGBTQ representation, sweet and dorky character, potential boyfriend of Felix if he and Donny don’t work out
Oliver Fish, Dr. Kyle Lewis, and Sierra Fish, One Life to Live - Kish was a popular couple, LGBTQ representation, police officer and doctor, potential friends for Brad and Lucas especially in light of their adoption storyline

WHY TRAILS IS MY FAVORITE RPG SERIES
What comes to mind when you think of a good RPG series? Often times people will say Final Fantasy, Dark Souls, Skyrim, and Witcher 3. Others will say Pokemon, Fire Emblem, Xenoblade, or Tales. But very few will mention the Trails series, otherwise known as the Kiseki series in Japan.
The Trails series is actually a larger part of The Legend of Heroes franchise, which has been around for a long time. There are 5 other Legend of Heroes series just like Trails, but we will be focusing on just the Trails series, which is the 6th installment.
It is by far the best RPG series pound for pound in existence; very few games can rival the quality of this series such as Witcher 3 and the Xenoblade series. So why doesn't anyone know about it outside of Japan? The biggest problem that stands in the way of the Trails series is localization.
Trails games have the largest script size of any video game series, which means they come over that much later when localized. For frame of reference, Trails in the Sky came out on PC in 2004 and PSP in 2006, but it was localized in 2011. Its sequel was localized 3 years later. The script size isn't the sole reason for the discreprancy between Japanese and Western release dates, but it makes quality testing, debugging, and programming much more time consuming.
Long localization times mean that the game will feel dated to Western players by the time it reaches them. Couple that being in the unpopular JRPG genre, and it's no wonder why Trails is under the radar in the West. Even in Japan, Falcom’s decisions to make most of their games on PC backfired. At the time, console gaming was more popular than PC gaming, the reverse of today's trend.
As a result, console RPGs received more attention which was further amplified by the heated console wars between Nintendo, Sony, and Sega. What's more unfortunate for Falcom was the decline of the JRPG genre, which earned a stigma in the West, therefore striking the global market off their list of considerations. So even by the time Trails in the Sky came out, it was already too late for them to capture a widespread audience.
If you go back in time and change a few things like platform choice, localization, and maybe going 3D, then Trails would have the popularity it deserves today. If Trails was as well known as Final Fantasy or Witcher 3, it would have dramatically changed the landscape of the JRPG genre.
But enough about that... So what makes the Trails series so worthy of praise? When you pick up an RPG, you're probably doing it for its story and characters. The battle system is secondary to you but of course you still want that to be fun. The Trails series does all of the above and more, to the greatest extent.
The best way I can describe the Trails series is that it's an RPG made for RPG fans. You have some of the best worldbuilding of any fictional work, profound story and characters, massive amounts of content, and an ingenius battle system. It does everything you want an RPG to do, and more.
WORLD BUILDING
It's easy to create a fictional world but difficult to create one that has a coherent geography, ecology, history, and politics. It is essential to telling a story because it’s the setting, the driving force of the plot, and the groundwork for character motives. But worldbuilding can also destroy the storyline if it's bad.
Let's take a look at Final Fantasy XIII and its world of Cocoon, a floating planetoid-shaped continent floating above Gran Pulse, a wilderness of monsters. While on Cocoon, your fugitive characters are constantly on the run from the entire human race. You never have time to take in the sights and in fact, you barely get to explore any of the wondrous cities in the game. Outside of deities and the military, you know nothing about its citizens, cities, politics, economy, or what life is like for the average person. You have no reason to care about its world.
Which I guess is the point because your characters are fugitives who plan on destroying it. Except that halfway through, your characters don't want to do that anymore but Cocoon almost gets destroyed anyway. In the end, Cocoon is saved but to what end? The players have no way to care about Cocoon even if they wanted to, so why does it matter? Its safety has no emotional impact on the player.
By the way, you can read much about XIII's lore and background in the game's database. But that's not the same as storytelling or worldbuilding. Reading about something is not the same as experiencing it. The game can have amazing characters and look as pretty as it wants, but with such awful worldbuilding its story becomes the least memorable thing about it.
Now let's talk about Trails, which takes place on the continent of Zemuria. The Trails in the Sky trilogy takes place in the Kingdom of Liberl. Zero no Kiseki and Ao no Kiseki take place in Crossbell State, and are thus known as the Crossbell duology. Trails of Cold Steel 1 & 2 takes place in the Erebonian Empire. All of these regions are within the Zemurian continent, each with their own culture, people, ideas, economy, and politics. And there are many more countries on this continent that play a role in the Trails series, we just don't travel there- yet.
They sign treaties, trade with each other, and go to war just like real world nations. The relationship between these regions affects the overarching events of what happens within their borders, and thus become the driving forces of their respective games.
In Sky, you have an extremist who doesn't believe the current seat of authority has what it takes to protect Liberl. In Erebonia, you have a country built on the annexation of many other states in an expansion for power so that it can compete against its long-standing rival, the Calvard Republic. With the way Trails does its worldbuilding, you can see that everyone has a motivation behind their actions. You can see why the story unfolds the way it does. And you can also see how they intersect and affect each other.
But Trails is not simply a bunch of countries vying for resources or superiority. There are so many forces and organizations in play that make the story even more interesting. You have the Bracer Guild, a politically neutral organization whose purpose is to maintain peace and protect people. They don't alway get along with the military, but they are loved by the people for solving their everyday problems.
On the other hand, you have the Jaeger Corps, mercenaries for hire. They are often employed by corrupt officials and evil organizations to carry out their dirty work. They operate outside the boundaries of laws and do whatever it takes to get the job done. There are different Jaeger Corps in the Trails Series, such as the Zephyr and Red Constellation, who have a bad history together. The Jaeger Corps and Bracer Guild are not necessarily rivals, but their line of work and ideals are often in opposition.
You also have Septian Churches established all over the continent in dedication of the Sky Goddess Aidios, otherwise known as "She who dwells above." Ordinarily, these churches are insignificant to the main storyline. But in Arteria, the High Seat of the Septian Church, there is an operation of Holy Knights known as the Gralsritter. They operate with the utmost secrecy and are therefore unknown to the public. Their goal is to recover artifacts and ensure they are kept away from human hands. They have other important missions but they are a central focus of the Trails series, so there is not much we know about their Holy Knight operations.
Also operating in secrecy is an evil society known as Ouroboros. They are the ultimate masterminds in each of the Trails games. Their intentions, members, and powers are all shrouded in mystery. Often times, their plans revolve around obtaining artifacts and manipulating influential figures to carry out their grand schemes.
The amount of detail that goes into their worldbuilding goes down to even the microscopic levels. Each city and town has its own economy, culture, and people. The main reason for Trails' large text is because almost every NPC in the game is a named character with their own story. You have a couple traveling the world together, a hopeless romantic and his best friend, and family members living in different cities wondering about each other.
These aren't your average generic NPCs that exist to fill up a town and make it feel alive. These are actual characters with their own stories with different dialogue lines throughout the entire game. What you get in the end is a living, breathing, organic world. It's something you can appreciate while traveling, something you can fall in love with, and ultimately something you want to protect.
STORY/CHARACTERS
Even with amazing world building, the writers can still drop the ball on the story and characters. In Sword Art Online, the worldwide hit MMORPG anime, you have a wonderful fantasy land and an intriguing UI for players to use. Couple that with top notch animation and attractive character designs and you have a great-looking anime. Unfortunately, that's all it is.
The show is basically being run by a Gary and Mary Stu, two leading protagonists who are perfect in every way and get what they want in the end. It's painful and annoying to watch. The show does a great job of catching your interest but an equally good job on ruining it. SAO's worldbuilding has great potential but it's ultimately wasted on poor writing and terrible characters.
On the other hand, Trails does an exceptional job with their story and characters. Their storylines have actually good plot twists and their games know how to wrap up and ending better than a Chipotle burrito. Their characters have deep histories and well-written development.
Writing a good plot twist can be difficult, because it needs to have the element of surprise, impact the storyline, and make sense all at the same time. The story has to lead up to that point without giving it away. In other words, the foreshadowing needs to be just enough so that players guess something will happen but not too much so that they don't know exactly what WILL happen. This is something Trails has done every single time.
Secondly, plot twists will change the tone or pace of the game, for better or for worse. Often times, writers just have this amazing twist in their mind but they don't know what to do afterwards. So what you get is a sloppy ending that makes no sense.
This is a problem Trails does not suffer because you can tell that they meticulously plan out their writing from beginning to end. Their plot twists properly accomodate for everything affected so there are no plot holes or inconsistencies. And because their storylines occur over several games, their endings wrap up the current arc but end with a cliffhanger to start the next arc.
Trails does an equally amazing job with their characters. Good characters are always memorable and it just so happens that nearly all of the Trails characters are memorable. They go beyond your typical archetype because of good writing, original histories, and meaningful development.
When delving into a character's past, Trails goes deep. You see their upbringing, what happened to each of the characters, and how those events shaped the person you see today. These flashbacks are brief and happen at the crux of a character's development. What you get in the end is a development that flows nicely, ties in with the story, and helps you appreciate the character more.
Speaking of development, Trails has some of the most meaningful character development in the genre. Each of these characters feel very human because they have relateable flaws, flaws that they know they have difficulty coping with. And by adventuring with companions, they are able to own up to their mistakes and make amends, which pushes their characters towards completion.
For example, there are a pair of characters who dislike each other because of their personalities and social standing. They are unable to work in a team and as a result, a mutual friend of theirs gets hurt. They are forced to realize that they are the problem and begin working together. They still get on each other's nerves, but now they are more like squabbling rivals rather than two people who hate each other's guts.
Moreover, each of them have their own realizations as individuals. The noble realizes that he shouldn't try to do everything alone. There are times when it is okay to rely on other's strengths. The commoner realizes he's too hotheaded and that he needs to be more open-minded. It's endearing, it's charming, and it's entertaining. This is the kind of character writing you will come across in the Trails series.
BATTLE SYSTEM
At the end of the day, video games are video games. It can have a great story but if the gameplay doesn't attract the player, then they might drop the game before finishing the story. So sometimes, players are forced to play a bad game to finish a story or go through a bad story that has good gameplay. With Trails, the quality of their story and characters can also be seen in the gameplay so you get the best of both worlds.
The Trails series is one of the most satisfying strategic turn-based RPGs in the genre. It's simple enough for newcomers to understand without referring to a guide but complex enough for hardcore players to have fun with. Basically, your characters battle on a field and perform regular attacks, special attacks, or cast spells. And naturally, there are other commands such as defending, using items, or running away. But there is much more to this.
First of all, positioning. Each character has a movement stat which determines how far they can travel on the field. This is important for weapon users who need to be close to the enemy to attack. During battles, you and your enemies will be all over the battlefield attacking each other, and this is where position comes to play. In this game, spells and special attacks have an area of effect that allows them to hit more than one target. For example, a linear AoE or a circular AoE. This also applies to buffs so if your characters aren't close enough together, some of them may miss out on beneficial effects.
Secondly, Trails' turn-based combat has an additional factor called Delay. In most turn-based RPGs, turns are determined solely by the speed stat. In Trails, it's based on both speed and delay. Delay is the amount of "lag" of each action, and this "lag" determines when the character's next turn will be. For example, when unleashing a powerful spell or attack, the delay may allow the enemy to take an extra turn before your character can act again. This kind of balancing allows different levels of attacks and spells to become relevant throughout the entire game.
Third, we have spells which are known as Arts in the Trails series. These spells can be offensive or supportive. Supportive spells can buff your characters or debuff the enemy, depending on their immunities. Offensive spells are separated into different tiers of spells. Stronger spells have higher costs and more delay, but they deal more damage and often have an area of effect. Certain offensive spells also have a chance to inflict a status ailment such as freeze or burn.
Fourth, we have Crafts which are the special attacks of the Trails series. These are character-specific skills that can have any number of effects. They can deal extra damage, have an area of effect, provide a buff, inflict debuffs on enemies, heal HP, and more. They consume a resource called CP, which can only be accumulated during battles (with some exceptions).
Fifth, we have Status Ailments. Yes they exist in every RPG but Trails' status ailments play a larger role in the outcome of battles than any other RPGs. Defensive buffs are significant enough to prevent character deaths and save you from wasting a turn on healing HP. And ailments such as Petrify or Freeze can completely turn the tide.
On top of that, Trails has a plethora of unique ailments unseen in other RPGs. AT Delay pushes back a character's turn. Faint prevents a character from taking a turn, and any attacks that land on them will result in a Critical. Vanish temporarily removes a character from the field. The complexity of ailments adds more layers of strategy that must be considered when battling in a Trails game.
And finally, we have Orbments, yet another defining part of the Trails system. Every character has an Orbment with several slots. Players choose what elemental Quartz goes in each slot. Quartz will affect both the character's stats and what spells they can use. For example, an Attack Quartz (Red) will increase a character's physical damage and give them access to Fire Bolt.
Orbments work differently depending on which Trails game you play, but universally you get to choose what Quartz goes into each slot. Because of this freedom, there is a high degree of customization in outfitting your party members. You can shape characters into different roles to suit your needs.
These are the defining components that make up the Trails system. Each of these adds a layer of depth and strategy to the battle system. In most turn-based games, you're essentially managing damage and healing. But in Trails, you're doing so much more than that. Its sophistication allows the satisfying experience of finding multiple solutions to the same problem and playing however you want.
A battle system can have the most interesting concepts and mechanics but it's useless without an array of enemies that take full advantage of it. In Trails, you have many different kinds of enemies that require different strategies to take down. You have enemies with high evasion or high defense, so you need to use spells to take them down. Then there are enemies who are immune or even reflect spells, so they need to be handled physically. There are enemies who explode upon KO, so you have to take them out from a distance. These are just few of the many types of enemies that you will run into in the Trails series.
You can get by on brute force, but you’ll be using more healing items and spells along the way. If you play with strategy, your battles will be more efficient and satisfying. That’s the beauty of the Trails’ battle systems. There is no single way to win a battle. There are no useless characters that get outshined by the rest of the cast (okay... I can think of one poor girl). The battle system is your playground.
MUSIC
When people talk about amazing video game music they often refer to Final Fantasy, Legend of Zelda, and Mega Man. But the Trails series is a real contender and personally, I enjoy their music more than any other video game series (except Zelda). You have really catchy battle tunes, perfect ambient music for dungeons, and the music for cutscenes are spot-on. Most soundtracks are 50% recognizable, but Trails music is so good, I remember 80-90% of their tracks.

CONTENT
Like I said before, Trails is an RPG for RPG fans. RPG fans love a game they can sit down and play for endless amounts of hours. They love having a ton of sidequests to do as long as they are fun and interesting. They enjoy exploring every nook and cranny of fields and dungeons for hidden treasure chests. Trails caters to all of this and more.
This holds especially true for their storylines. As mentioned before, the Trails series span several games to tell the complete story. Their story isn't dragged on or inflated for the sake of having multiple games. The scale of the stories are so grand and epic, that each arc needs to be told on its own. When playing the sequel, I want to find out badly how the story ends and what happens to the characters I've grown attached to. I don't feel like the series is being milked or that they are just reusing assets to cut costs of making a new game.
CONCLUSION
I've always found it difficult to explain to someone else why Trails is so good. It's easy to say "This RPG has good stories and characters and it's fun to play" but that's not enough to convince someone to pick it up and play it. This is a series that cannot be summed up with a few tag lines in a 30 second commercial. I wish I could hold a lecture at a campus to describe the Trails series to RPG fans.
Also, the Trails series comes in so many different flavors but they're universally amazing. So it's not just one game or a duology I am trying to sell to people, it's the entire series. I find myself saying to people "Just give it a try, you won't regret it" and then typing in all caps to emphasize my desperate excitement. But I think in writing this essay, I've done a good job making it stand out from other RPGs.
I hope you guys give Trails a try.

The Best Offline Strategy Games for Android & iOS
In the age of the always-online freemium mobile experience, sometimes it's nice to know that there are quality strategy games out there that you can play offline. Maybe Grandma's wi-fi isn't up to the job, or maybe you just don't have any internet. Are you on a Bus? A Plane?
Whatever the case, there comes a time when you need a strategy game that's a real feast--but at a table set for one. Luckily, there are a large number of mobile games with great offline experiences in 2018, on both iOS and Android.
What are the best Offline Strategy Games for Android & iOS?
Bad North
Star Traders: Frontiers
Rebel Inc.
Doorkickers
Frozen Synapse Prime
Tharsis
Ticket to Ride
XCOM: Enemy Within
Battle of Wesnoth
Bad North
Bad North is a self-styled 'micro' or 'minimalist' real-time strategy game that's been a big hit on PC and Switch, and is finally available on mobile. It works perfectly even when you're not connected to data or wifi, which makes it a no-brainer for this last. Technically, we've played this the most on Airplanes but since it's a game primarily about short-bursts of activity, it's also suited for played on the bus.
Essentially you're in charge of a small army of units that you must use to defend a succession of islands from Viking invaders. Islands are connected together in a randomised and procedurally generated chain, and once you've completed one it unlocks the the next in line. You have to try and keep up forward momentum because if you lag behind you may be overtaken and you lose. Along the way you can find items and more units to command, but the islands get harder to defend.
Star Traders: Frontiers
This is technically more RPG than strategy, but it's a cracking solitaire game that gives you a wide open sandbox to explore as captain of your own space-shop. Trade and take on 'quests' as you strive to make a name for yourself in a dangerous universe, with both turn-based squad battles (JRPG style) and turn-based ship combat which will put your vessel and your crew to the test. You can customise your character and your crew as much as you like, levelling them up along specific career paths that can make you a hard-as-nails combat vessel, or a stealthy smuggler looking to maximise profit. The game has lots of story vignettes to pull you through, from standard quest systems, to larger multi-part stories and era-defining events that you can help shape, or not. Regardless, this is a living sandbox that will progress with or without your help.
What makes this a good 'offline' game though is the fact that not only does it not require an internet connection, but the game will remember your state if you find yourself having to close down the app unexpectedly, even in the middle of a battle. Plenty of save slots as well for all you scummers out there. The icing on the cake is that the developers are always pushing out updates, so there's near weekly fresh content being dropped into the game. Read our review to find out more.
Rebel Inc.
Just like its predecessor Plague Inc., Rebel Inc. is an excellent drop-in/drop-out game that allows you to pause the action and come back to it at a later date. This real-time strategy experience puts you in the shows of a newly appointed administrator of a troubled region recovering from a recent war (evoking memories of the recent War in Afghanistan, specifically). You must spend your budget wisely on government improvements and initiatives to help the population rebuild and to win support.
Unlike Plague, however, you can't just sit back and wait for the people to love you - the enemies vanquished in the recent war haven't gone away, and soon insurgent forces will start popping up on the map trying to try and take over by force. You then enter a different game entirely - one of tactical placement. By marshalling local or coalition forces, you must drive out the insurgents from the major population centres and corner them so that they have nowhere to run. Do well and they'll eventually ask for peace but the longer the linger, the quicker your reputation declines and if it reaches zero, you lose.
Doorkickers
Doorkickers makes a great bite-sized tactical treat. Each mission is a puzzle that you solve by drawing lines for your squad of police officers to follow. First you plan, then you can pause the game at any time to modify your strategy. The encounters are over as quickly as a real tactical breach would be, which means if you screwed up and got your officers fragged you can try again almost immediately. You can pass a mission with minimal requirements, but casualties and mistakes will carry over to the next level. While there's not much story here, there is a gradual progression of unlockable gear and skills and new, more challenging missions. At the same time, you're free to take on any one of several campaigns at the same time. Get stuck and you can just try a different one.
Frozen Synapse Prime
This is another great tactical game that works well with a touch interface. Set in a futuristic city with cyborg commandos that can be controlled remotely, Frozen Synapse breaks turns out of a real-time battle by pausing every few seconds for both sides to issue new orders. The orders play out simultaneously, so the core mechanic is predicting what your opponent is going to do next.
While Frozen Synapse is extra great with a human partner to second-guess, it also has a very cool single-player campaign with a pretty interesting post-cyberpunk story-line. This also features quite a variety of mission types, smart AI, and satisfying progression. On iOS, you'll also be able to get the original, with hip minimalist graphics. On Android, you've got the Prime remake, which is essentially the same game but with more realistic visuals.
Iron Marines
This mission-based RTS will take a little more commitment, but the rewards are worth it. From veteran developers Ironhide, creators of the mega-hit Kingdom Rush, is a polished, neon-colored gem of a mobile strategy game. It's your basic space marines vs aliens set against highly improbable but beautiful alien landscapes. Your commander has MOBA-like hero abilities that will help you face a variety of mission types and enemies, and the game can get pretty tough later in the campaign. Read our Iron Marines review for more.
Tharsis
The fact that this game is iPad only (for now) doesn't stop it being an excellent solo turn-based strategy experience. Inspired by dice-rolling board game design, this is a survival/disaster management game where you must try and get as many of your crew to Mars as you can as the spaceship that's carrying you there slowly falls apart around you. Each turn represents a week aboard the failing Iktomi, in which the crew have to repair various system failures or suffer the consequences. These consequences include a faulty life support system damaging the crews’ health or a severe fire destroying the ship’s hull and bringing an abrupt end to your mission.
The solo nature of this game means that it's an excellent one for those longer-haul journeys, although the caveat is it may not be as battery friendly as others in this section. Still, the thought of being forced to resort to cannibalism to keep your crew alive can sometimes be too compelling to ignore, battery be damned. Read our review for more.
Ticket to Ride
A must have feature of any modern digital board game must be pass-and-play. It brings these apps closer to their physical counter-part and allows them to actually fill the niche they were designed for, albeit at the potential expense of sales as close-knit groups or couples only end up buying one version of the app between them. Ticket to Ride is an extremely popular, mainstream boardgame, although we can quibble over its definition of 'strategy' if you like. Still, it's combination of set collection and the tactical placement of your trains makes for a very compelling game - do you go the easiest route, or the longest? do you focus on your tickets, or try to subvert other player's routes? Do you place those trains now, or pick up those cards you desperately need?
Regardless, as an app and as an offline experience, it's well above par. The base purchase gets you the USA map, but most of the series' spin-offs and expansions are available to purchase via IAPs. IF you wait for a sale, you could easily stock up on options and you'll find yourself with a great shared experience to tide you through those long flights. You can even fit in a game with two people and two AI in an hour-long domestic flight, so if you're looking for a quintessential offline experience for two or more people, look no further than Ticket to Ride.
XCOM: Enemy Within
Likewise, the mobile port of XCOM is rightly lauded as one of the few PC-quality experiences to be had on a tablet. Not only did this standalone expansion of the original ground-breaking remake Enemy Unknown polish off all the rough edges of its original, it added great new wrinkles to the classic core gameplay. You still get a massive open-ended campaign with tactical turn-based missions, but now you have a much more interesting storyline that has your soldiers questioning whether they have gazed too long into the abyss to still be considered human.
Battle of Wesnoth
For a different sort of grand experience, try the venerable Battle for Wesnoth, an open-source project fifteen years in the making. It's a grand strategy game with a Tolkienesque fantasy theme. There's a massive variety of units in six highly distinct factions, plus different historical ages that change the balance. Its sixteen (!!) lengthy and story-based campaigns will keep you busy for a long long time. The complexity of the interface means this is one for the tablet, and the free Android version is a bit jankier than the more polished (and paid) iOS version.

Gacha Life Tips and Tricks
At this point in time, when TV reality phenomenon is at the height of its popularity, we’ve seen developers turn more and more to making games that simulate, imitate, or otherwise resemble that same instance of casual lifestyle extravaganza. These games are often fused with the casual genre, though in terms of gameplay mechanics they can be puzzles, point-and-clickers, turn-based strategies, and even action. Also, making Youtube videos has long become accessible to anyone with the wits and the creativity of thinking up interesting content. Gacha Life fuses together all these things into a simple and yet rich and colorful mobile game.
youtube
Gacha Life PEGI 3
Unfortunately, we rarely see a game succeed in all of this. It is not easy to fuse together the things mentioned above. Some of the most successful casual games are probably in the brick breaker, farming, plants vs zombie, and candy crushing lane. Gacha Life has a more static gameplay design, with social interactions as the main focus of the action. Making jokes and interesting conversations between characters is what it is all about, with additional games available on the side. But, every aspect of the game has its own unique but not that hard mechanic, and here are some tips for those.
youtube
How to make Gacha Life Videos?
1. Screenshots
Making Gacha Life videos is absurdly simple. Just open your game, select a character, make some scenes with him or her, and screenshot them at will. Of course, this is the part where you make poses, chat bubbles, and all that interesting stuff happen. Make a screenshot for each and every scene you create and deem worthy of being in your video. The screenshots are saved to your phone’s storage by default.
2. Screenshot Editor
Download an app like PowerDirector, cute cut pro, or some other editor you are familiar with. If you never worked in one, do not worry they are all quite simple to use. Then just open the editor and put your screenshots together in a predicted sequence. Make sure to leave enough time for each screenshot for anyone to read the chat bubbles and view other stuff, 5 seconds is usually enough. Also, set your desired effects, depending on the app you use.
3. PC Users
Making a video on PC is even easier. You can use the tool for PC called Lunime.ITCH.IO, built especially for the purpose of making your Gacha Life videos. Follow the download instructions and open your Gacha Life app. Do everything you would normally do, make characters and make screenshots. Use the Snipping tool to make screenshots seamlessly. Next, open your video editor, like Filmora for instance, and simply combine your screens with the desired time stamps and on-screen durations.
4. Do Not Beg For Attention!
The 4th and most important thing to remember is never to beg for likes and subs. Begging for attention will reject people. It is off-putting to always say ‘please like, sub, share’ and similar things. Just focus on making an interesting storyline and funny interactions, and you will see your number of views and likes increase steadily.
youtube
How to Create a Character in Gacha Life?
1. Slots
You get 8 slots for free at the start and it is a good idea to first make one character and try out other game’s features before you complete your whole set. Having different characters can help make your game and your videos a lot more interesting, fun, and make ‘em have a realistic feel.
2. Personality
Try not to make unrealistic personality combinations, because it will make your characters appear insane. And, although you may think it is funny to you, anybody else viewing your videos will find it confusing and it will turn them off. Ex: If you make a Tsundere, do not make them scream like the Alien Mother in Alien 3, just make them somewhat inaccessible and that is that. Your other characters will appreciate it as well. Also, avoid archetype prejudice towards personality traits, like making your blonde, tan, pink girl a bully. Even though that is the general archetype, it will make you look like a conservative, narrow-minded, anti-social dork.
youtube
How do I make my Gacha Life characters more alive?
1. For each and every screenshot you make, try to adjust your characters in a way that they behave according to the story and the situation. Making their mouths open when they speak is a good example. Also, do not make all your characters speak at the same time, on the same screenshot. One chat bubble at a time!
2. Turn a character to face the other character he is talking to if it is not otherwise necessary for him or her to look the other way. Also, try and make different poses and emotes during their conversations. This will make their body language more natural and make the interaction alive.
How to find Lusa and Magical Luni in Gacha Life?
Bad news… First, you have to be level 100, so you have quite a while to get there. But afterward, for magical Luni, you go to the Bamboo.
1. Magical Luni
Select the travel destination and find Magical Luni once you get past all other screens and you get to a magical portal. Enter the portal and there she is! Talk to her and she will appear in your character pane.
2. Lusa
Afterward, exit the portal and travel to the Roof. Go right, past all screens until you find a magical portal. Enter it, and there you will find Lusa! Talk to her and she will appear in your character pane as a friend.
What Annoys People in Gacha Life?
1. Bullies
Your viewers and audience need to be presented with at least an interesting and realistic story, to make it worth their time. Try and find a real cause for everything that is happening. If bullies are bullying someone, do not make a scene where they just see someone looking retarded and they come and bully them. Okay, perhaps bullies are not much smarter in real life, but try and make some other reason. For instance, bullies are even more drawn to successful and popular characters. Try and find a psychological reason for them to attack.
2. Killing off a Character
A car crash, really? Every time some character needs to die it is always a car crash… Please, people, make up something else, something creative or even bizarre if you will. Try turning to Final Destination for help.
3. Joke Overflow
Do not make every chat bubble a joke. This is not a ‘70s family sitcom. It is tiresome and boring to read every chat bubble with some lame joke about clothes and stuff. Instead, try and build up to your punchline. First introduce the characters, the problem, etc…
4. Get the Story straight
If you are creating a story for your viewers, first decide on what the overall goal is. Is it a tragedy? Is it a drama? Get it straight. A story cannot be everything at the same time. Characters cannot hear about tragic news and then laugh in the next scene, or something similar. Just follow through anything you come up with to the end, and then transition to another mood.

My Top 7 Tactical RPGs
I’ve been a fan of tactical RPGs for years… It started when I first played Final Fantasy Tactics (you can read my review of it here), only for my interest to grow when I found other games in the genre. There is just something fun and exciting (for me) about having to carefully plan out each move your characters make. In fact, the more unforgiving a tactical RPG is, the more I enjoy it!
These type of RPGs really aren’t for everyone, though. They are slow, require a lot of planning and strategy, often have a huge amount of customisation that takes a lot of time, and are extremely long. If you’re looking for an easy and relaxing, turn-based RPG then tactical RPGs probably aren’t what you are looking for. However, if you want some really deep gaming that will force you to use your head, then these are my top 7 tactical RPGs so far!
7. Ring of Red
Starting this list off, we have a rather underrated little PS2 tactical RPG by the name of Ring of Red. The game didn’t achieve any particular heights of popularity, mostly due to the slightly confusing translation. However, that shouldn’t take away from the fun and adrenaline that you get from playing the game. Ring of Red is a mech-based game that features a highly militarised gameplay style.
You move your party members (in their war machines) around the battlefield to engage enemies. Then, when you choose to attack, the game will switch to a 3D view of you and your enemy in combat with one another.
The storyline is also really good! However, the poor translation may leave you not really knowing what is going on at any one time. That’s why Ring of Red didn’t score higher up on this list.
6. Fire Emblem Awakening
Trying to choose which of the Fire Emblem games to put on this list was really hard. Every single one of these is a great tactical RPG and I could easily make a list post about the top Fire Emblem games by themselves (there’s an idea). However, after much deliberation, I decided to feature Fire Emblem Awakening for the Nintendo 3DS. But first, let’s take a look at the common gameplay mechanics of the series in general…
As mentioned early, I enjoy games that are challenging and punishing – that completely describes the Fire Emblem series. For example, the games feature a permanent death mechanic for each unit you have in your party. This means that, once they are defeated in combat, they are dead. You no longer have access to them for the rest of the game. This puts a huge amount of pressure on you to make sure your tactical strategy is as sound as possible.
In terms of Fire Emblem Awakening, the game continues the overarching storyline of the series but does so with such finesse that it deserves to be singled out from the rest of the series, in my opinion. One of the coolest parts of the gameplay for Awakening is that it also gives you the option to view individual fight scenes in fight person. This gives a much more personal perspective to the combat that really makes the game stand out.
5. Disgaea 2
Okay, so let me preface this with the fact that Disgaea 5 is probably the better game in the Disgaea series. It was more polished, due to the fact that the developers had a bunch of other games to improve their skills with beforehand (not that they needed it). However, as this is a list of my top 7 tactical RPGs, I’m also putting personal opinion into this as well. That’s why I chose to feature Disgaea 2 instead.
The reason for this is that, as it contains all of the tactical RPG gameplay that other Disgaea games have, it was also the game that introduced me to the series. Think of it like Final Fantasy; you always love the first game in the series that you played.
Disgaea 2 was one of my favourite RPGs on the PlayStation 2 and will forever have a place in my heart because of that. It may not be the most polished and modernised of the series, but it remains the most entertaining and enjoyable for me.
4. Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
For the fourth entry on this list of my top 7 tactical RPGs, we are jumping back to the Super Nintendo! Tactics Ogre was actually released on a few different platforms over time, including the Sega Saturn and PSP. That, alone, should explain just how amazing this game really is. It also acted as the inspiration for Final Fantasy Tactics – a number of the Tactics Ogre developers actually worked on Final Fantasy Tactics as well.
It is hard to explain much about Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together without spoiling a part of the story. It is full of great twists and turns, as well as branching storylines depending on your actions. Considering all of this, as well as the fact that this first came out on the SNES, is crazy.
3. Front Mission 3
Square has been able to churn out high-quality RPGs for decades now, and the tactical RPG genre is no exception. Front Mission as a whole is a great series that features incredibly rich world building. In fact, the upcoming PS4 game Left Alive takes place within the Front Mission world, showing you just how special (and popular) this game series is. Front Mission 3, however, remains my personal favourite.
The game (as with all in the series) features a host of different mecha (giant, militarised robots) that your characters pilot. However, these aren’t you Super Robots like the Megazord or Mazinger. Instead, the mecha in Front Mission are most like those in Gundam or Battletech; they are referred to as Real Robots, as they are mass produced war machines that are just like tanks. In the game, you can customise your mechs to a huge amount, and the battles will play out differently depending on the tactics that you use.
On top of this, the storyline of Front Mission 3 is awesome, truly befitting an RPG made by the likes of Square. You need to check this game out if you haven’t already!
2. Valkyria Chronicles
Coming in at the number 2 spot is a PS3 game that didn’t get a huge amount of interest when it first released, but eventually become popular enough to get a bunch of sequels and an HD remaster; Valkyria Chronicles. If you like the idea of a game’s art style resembling a hand-drawn anime, then straight away, this is the game for you. Visually, it is an utter masterpiece. But the brilliance of Valkyria Chronicles isn’t skin deep!
The game mixes tactical RPG gameplay with that of a third-person military shooter in a way that feels both natural and exciting. You move your characters around freely, but can only move or act if you have action points left. This creates a wonderfully strategic take on the military shooter idea, creating some very interesting moments. On top of this, the game is hard! And but that I mean unforgiving. If you make one serious mistake with your strategy, you are almost certainly going to lose the battle. I love this, as it gives you a sense of tension and adrenaline. In fact, you should check out my Let’s Play of the HD Remake to get an idea of just how awesome Valkyria Chronicles really is!
youtube
Whilst the sequels may not have been able to hold on to the magic of the first game, I would definitely recommend getting your hands on this one. You can find it on PS3, PS4 and Steam for PC, so you’ve got a lot of choice in how to play this epic game! Plus, Valkyria Chronicles 4 is coming out soon, and it looks set to be a return to form for the series.
1. Final Fantasy Tactics
And so here we are; my number one favourite tactical RPG of all time. Unsurprisingly, it is also one of my favourite games ever (beaten only be Koudelka) – Final Fantasy Tactics. As mentioned at the start of this post, it was Final Fantasy Tactics that first introduced me to the tactical RPG genre. As we all know, your first experience of something will leave a lasting effect, and that is exactly what happened here. But don’t let that take away from the magnificence that is Final Fantasy Tactics!
The game features an incredibly rich storyline that covers social inequality, blindly following religion and political intrigue. I mean, it pretty much has all of the main controversial topics covered in just one game. Yet, it pulls this off brilliantly against the backdrop of a middle ages world. All of the main characters feel unique and fleshed out, with their own backstories and motivations. The world is also very believable, despite being a fantasy land filled with monsters and demonic entities. I could talk about Final Fantasy Tactics all day, but it would probably be better to let you know that I published a review of it here.
Final Fantasy Tactics is an amazing game that will always have a very strong place in my heart. If you haven’t played the original PSX game or the PSP remake (War of the Lions), then I would highly recommend that you give it a try!
And That’s All Folks
Well, there you have it. That was my personal top 7 tactical RPGs so far. There are, of course, a tonne more of them out there and I haven’t played all of them yet… However, I do intend to eventually, so that may lead to a sequel list with updated games. But for now, I would highly recommend that you go and give each of these a try!
