If I remember it right, this was my first AU for Bojack Horseman (or should I say Bojack Humanman...?)
I’m SURELY not the first person to swap their species, but I thought it was worth to try my version! Until today, cat Diane is still one of my favorite things I’ve ever drawn.

What your favourite BJHM ship says about you!
Boherb: you obsess over AUs and headcanons
Bobutter: you're a sucker for character foil dynamics and also your favourite ship is probably squidbob
BoJack x Diane: you love relationships where the two character arcs have exact opposite pathways over the course of the story
Diane x Mr Peanutbutter: you believe that there was a way to save their relationship. Also you're probably a Heartstopper fan
Diarolyn: you're me
Diane x Guy: you just want good things for Diane. And honestly, who doesn't?
BoJack x Todd: you're my friend Katie. Also you preferred their relationship at the end of the show
BoJack x Gina: you like relationships based in chemistry and banter, and you also obsess over AUs and headcanons
Princess Carolyn x Ralph: you want the best for PC (and who doesn't)
Princess Carolyn x Judah: PC's was your favourite character arc
Paige and Max: you're autistic

You should draw Gina Cazador, she’s one of my favorite Bojack characters😇🙏
YES YES YES!! She's one of my favorites too (and one of the reasons I love season 5 the most), I'm glad to find another fan of her!
She, just like Sarah Lynn, is a character I'm surprised I don't draw more?? I think the ONLY time I've drawn her was for my swap species AU:
Tumblr media
I have to change that and maybe include her in more of my AUs. To start, I drew her quickly today:

Thinking about how Gina sings "Don't stop dancing 'til the curtains fall" whereas Sarah Lynn sings "Don't stop dancing 'til the curtain call" and that just solidifies more than anything how Sarah Lynn's entire life was planned out for her. The curtains falling implies this huge, dramatic event, but the curtain call will always happen at a preplanned point. Sarah Lynn's entire life is made up of things that were decided for her: her acting career, her music career, and her death was something that was almost bound to happen: even she said this in her first appearance. But at the same time, she was very much knocked down in her prime. Although Gina's version is somewhat abrupt, it still ends in a perfect cadence. Sarah Lynn's version just. Doesn't. It ends with her singing completely a capella, showing that she has finally achieved independence and peace. But it's too late. And at the same time, it was Always bound to happen this way.

I think about this alllll the time. ‘friends’ = Princess Carolyn but if I said PC was ruthless and lowkey not a nice or likeable character who did Bojack incredibly wrong here….? I’d start a riot lol. She’s truly such a capitalist girlboss (derogatory) the way she’s willing to do anything including hurt the people around her in order to get what she wants and rise to the top. Too busy going on her privatized adoption arc to a) make sure her client was working on a safe set and b) treat him with the appropriate amount of care when he injured himself. It’s extra fucked because she of ALL people should know that telling Bojack ‘don’t rest and recover just take a bunch of addictive painkillers’ is an awful idea. But because she’s blurred the lines between her personal and professional life so badly she also knows that he won’t stop dancing if she tells him not to. And he doesn’t.
The majority of irl opioid addicts started out getting legitimately prescribed opioids by a doctor. It makes me so upset because at the beginning of season 5 Bojack was really TRYING to cut down on his substance use and it was actually working, he was getting better and treating other people (like Gina!!!) better….. and then he was sabotaged by external circumstances that were truly not his fault. Seeing him punished for genuinely trying to do the right thing hurts more than watching him self-sabotage because it’s like man, I’d give up on trying too if it didn’t matter either way and my life just continued to get worse regardless
Thinking about how if bojacks friend allowed him to rest in the hospital after breaking his bones from the fall certain events wouldn't have happened it'd kinda fucked to have a guy with broken bones continue working instead of rest as pills do not fix broken bones

heyoooo what do you think about bojack's love interests (pc, wanda, (((ana))), gina) who appeared throughout the show?
Ooh fun fun ask!
Princess Carolyn:
Obviously I love PC, you can’t not. I think Bojack’s treatment of her at the very beginning was a massive product of early s1 being written in a certain way, and the show needing to commit to that introduction. The way he treats her, with that level of casual cruelty in the beginning (cheating on her and not caring, being so inconsistent and holding her at arms reach) just doesn’t… match the way he treats his other long term relationships. He’s never shown cheating on any of the other three mentioned, or insulting them, or otherwise acting overly cruel. But he is shown being more like that towards hookups especially in any sort of aftermath. So yeah, feels like a product of early s1 but the show ended up making something impactful out of it.
Of course this was the jumping point for one of my favourite relationships to explore in the show so I can hardly complain. I think in-universe the explanation would just be that Bojack had completely given up with her. She’s seen too much of him, she’s too close to him, so there’s no way she could truly love him (and he ignores any and all signs that point to otherwise). He’s used to the relationship though, she’s nice to have around, she does make him at least a bit happy, so he keeps her around.
I think eventually he realizes he’s holding her back, and he realizes he’s dragging her down and a waste of her time. And I think part of him already knew. He ends up firing her, and he claims she thinks he wasted her 30s. She doesn’t think he wasted her 30s, but Bojack claiming she thinks that is his ass backwards way of claiming HE thinks that.
Anyways! the whole character arc of PC learning to let go is some of the most amazing character development the show has to offer, fully deserving of its own post. I couldn’t do it justice here when it’s sharing the floor with other characters in this post, but I love it so much nonetheless.
Wanda Pierce
Ough! I love her, she deserves more love. I think Wanda was rather emotionally screwed over. She was essentially being used as a tool by Bojack to act as his fresh start. She wasn’t given the relationship she deserved or thought she would be getting.
It never would have worked, because bojack’s choice of her as a partner is an attempt to escape his past and his responsibility.
It’s a massive theme in season 2, and I think Wanda is an amazing culmination of the idea that you can’t escape who you are. Bojack can pretend to be this person, but Wanda gets close to him and gets to know him through his actions and not through this charismatic projected persona, and thus the real Bojack catches up to him. This is, of course, repeated with Charlotte at the end of the season.
Ana Spanakopita [sigh]
As much as we hate it, this was still a very central relationship in Bojack’s life.
Ana was very… representative of a lot of Bojack’s issues with authority and mentally unsafe dominance. She’s his mother, that’s all there is to it. She’s Beatrice if it was possible to impress Beatrice through his acting skills.
It shows how Bojack tends to drift towards a familiar pain and discomfort, simply due to the fact that it’s familiar. He’s used to having someone in his life who’s mean, and dominant, and hard to impress, because of his mother. He sees his mom in ana, but a version of his mom that he has a chance of getting some amount of appreciation from
Gina Cazador
I know I talked big game with PC about how much I love her….. But Gina’s my favourite. What can I say, I like the Philbert season.
Anyways! Gina’s interesting, because Bojack, in his relationship with her is somehow simultaneously the most and least self aware he’s ever been in a romantic relationship. Fully aware he has massive capacity to damage her both physically and emotionally, while simultaneously being practically asleep at the wheel due to his addiction. I love Gina as a character, a tragic and stark picture of Hollywood abuse, especially in her plea to Bojack to keep the choking incident secret so it doesn't define her career.
So yeah, two months later here's my answer. Hopefully it was at least a bit worth the wait. I have no excuse, I'm very distractible. I still stand by everything old I wrote, and I love any opportunity to talk about these tragically underrated characters
