David Tennant — wearing a lavish, gold, silken man-blouse and sucking on a cigar — is furious. He is savaging a roomful of party people, all looking stricken — and all, incongruously, wearing swimwear. “How the f*** has this happened?” Tennant screams, as all the tits and legs fidget, gaudy piña coladas abandoned. “Get the f*** out there and sort this out! And why are you all wearing bikinis?” Tennant storms from the room, apoplectic with rage — and then sees me. “Oh, hello, darling,” he says, all sweetness and light. “CUT!” the director calls. Today, David Tennant isn’t, of course, David Tennant. He’s Tony Baddingham, the infamous, nominative-determinist baddie of Jilly Cooper’s Rivals. “So, is this fun?” I ask him. The last time I saw him on set, he was being the Doctor in Doctor Who, in a floor-length coat, trying to save the world from being exploded. Again. In the rain. In Wales. At 1am. “Oh yes,” Tennant says. “I mean, look at my blouse. It’s like my aunt’s! Actually, I think it might be hers — it closes right to left. Don’t men’s buttons close left to right? Am I wearing,” he asks the room at large, “a woman’s blouse?” “We need to go again, David,” the director says. “Back in a tick,” Tennant says, running back on set, sucking on his cigar. Getting ready to be really evil, and Eighties, again.

EWAN MITCHELL — talking about matt smith.

He used to watch Doctor Who with his grandmother.

Idolising Smith-as-the-Doctor turned out to be very useful for playing Aemond, who idolises Smith-as-Daemon.

It is, admittedly, a complicated relationship: Aemond imitates, reveres and despises his uncle.

“I thought there was something interesting in never taking Matt off that podium.”

“I just kept him there, from where I saw him as a kid.”

He found it so interesting, in fact, that he spoke to showrunner Condal and proposed avoiding Smith on set so that the they would only ever interact in character. Smith was up for it.

There is a resemblance between the actors, something noted by his grandmother then and by me now.

Rob: When did you realize that the two of you had chemistry, that this was gonna work?

Jared: I felt it kinda instantly, ‘cause, you know, it was just [him] and me. You’re […] waiting to get summoned to walk two doors down the hall to the room with the thirty people that will decide your future… and so, you just kinda shoot the shit a little bit. And he’s like, [gruff voice] “So where’re you from?” And I was like, “Uhh, Texas.” He’s like, “Me too.” I’m like, “Cool.” And then he softened a little bit, and was like, “Who’s your team?” I was like, “Spurs.” He was like, “Alright, well. I don’t know about Spurs, y’know, I’m from Dallas, I like the Mavs. But alright.” He softened ever so slightly. Bristled a little bit at the Spurs comment. “So, uhh, you ever listen to country music?” I was like, “Pfft, do I ever listen to country music? I’m a Texan.” He’s like, “Okay.” Softened a little bit more, slightly. He’s like, “Uh, tell me about your family.” I was like, “Alright, well, I got an older brother, younger sister. What about you?” He’s like, “I got an… older brother, younger sister.” […] Ackles, to his credit, was like… “Well, shit. Let me ask some hard questions off the bat,” as opposed to like, [chipper voice] “How’s your day?”

Jensen: “I might have to put up with this guy for a few seasons.”

Jared: Yeah, “I might have to live with this guy, for the next, like, six years,” if we were so lucky. And I kinda did a similar thing - it’s been a while, but. If you have ten minutes before you have to get married to this person or not, you don’t wanna ask, like, “What’s your favorite color?” You wanna ask, like -

Jensen: Where’re you from. What’re your likes and dislikes. What’s your family history.
