For the past few months, Alicia Wertz has barely seen her husband. Since schools closed in their northern Alabama town in March, theyâve been single-mindedly focused on a single goal: making sure that someone was watching their three kids. At first, Wertz tried working from home. But she wasnât getting anything done, so they tried splitting the hours: Wertzâs husband watches the children in the morning, then a sitter comes to relieve him in the afternoon until Wertz takes over when she returns from work.
âWhen weâre not working, weâre by ourselves with the children. It almost feels like youâre a single parent. All you do is go to work and care for the kids,â Wertz said.
In her mind, Wertz is counting down the days until schools reopen. But thereâs a nagging worry at the back of her head â what if they donât open at all? âThe thought of [my kids] not going back in the fall is devastating,â Wertz said when we spoke in early July. âIt raises this question of â if one of us has to stay home with the children, whose job is more important? I think it was something that we did have conversations about before, but COVID-19 has made it much worse.â
Wertz isnât the only working mother for whom the thought of the fall calendar sparks both relief and dread. And what comes next could have disproportionate â and long-lasting â effects on the careers of countless women across the country. Studies have shown that women already shoulder much of the burden of caring for and educating their children at home; now, theyâre also more likely than men to have lost their jobs thanks to the pandemic. And the collapse of the child care and public education infrastructure that so many parents rely on will only magnify these problems, even pushing some women out of the labor force entirely.
âWeâre in danger of erasing the limited gains weâve made for women over the past few decades, and especially women of color,â said Melissa Boteach, Vice President for Income Security and Child Care/Early Learning at the National Womenâs Law Center.
The crux of the issue: Child care just isnât as available as it was before the pandemic. Data provided to FiveThirtyEight by the job-search website Indeed shows that child-care services have been much slower to hire again (a useful proxy for re-opening) than other areas of the economy:
Combine that with the news that many schools will remain closed in the fall, and itâs easy to see the crisis at hand. If polling is any indication, the vast majority of the fallout is being weathered by mothers, who were already doing the majority of household work even before the pandemic began.
In 2015, the Pew Research Center asked parents about how they divide family responsibilities when both work full-time.1 Some tasks were split relatively evenly: Twenty percent of respondents said the mother disciplined children more, 17 percent said the father disciplined more, and 61 percent said that responsibility was shared equally. For every task, however, more respondents reported that the mother carried a greater amount of the load than those who said the father did â including areas involving managing childrenâs schedules, caring for children when theyâre sick and handling household chores.
Moms usually shoulder more of the load at home

Along similar lines, Pew also found in a poll from 2019 that 80 percent of women living with a partner who had children did the primary grocery shopping and meal-preparation duties for their families. And according to the Bureau of Labor Statisticsâ American Time Use Survey â which tracks the average amount of time people spend per day on different categories of activity â married mothers with full-time jobs spent 56 percent more time doing childcare and housework than corresponding fathers. By contrast, fathers spent more time on work-related tasks, travel and leisure activities.2
All that extra time moms spend really adds up
Daily time spent doing various activities by married parents of children under 18 who both worked full-time, according to the American Time Use Survey

Survey data covers the combined years of 2015 through 2019 and includes both opposite- and same-sex couples.
Source: bls.gov
Even under normal circumstances, it was difficult for mothers of young children to balance work against the heavy burden of child care. The BLS found that in 2019, the labor force participation rate for women with children under age 6 was 66.4 percent, well below the rate for women with children age 6 or older3 (76.8 percent). According to a 2014 survey by the U.S. Census Bureau, 61 percent of women who were out of a job and have young children listed âcaretakingâ as a reason why they were not employed. Forty-six percent of women who were out of a job and have older children said the same. To put that in perspective, only 10 percent of all respondents who were out of work gave caregiving as a reason.4
A similar strain is apparent in working mothersâ decisions to take unpaid leave, or even part-time jobs instead of full-time ones. According to that same census survey from 2014, 30 percent of women who were part-time workers with young children â and 19 percent of women with older children â said caretaking was a reason they worked part-time. (Among part-time workers, the overall share is just 7 percent.)5
Now, with schools closed and day cares struggling to remain open, even more women may conclude that the best â or perhaps the only â choice for their family and their own sanity is to reduce their hours, or even press âpauseâ on their career.
âSometimes Iâll get to a point where Iâm like, âIâm so tired, Iâll have to go part-time to make it all work,ââ said Lee Dunham, a lawyer who lives in Delaware. Since the pandemic started, Dunham has been mostly responsible for her 10-month-old daughter during the day â which means her work day doesnât start until 8 p.m. and usually wraps around 2 a.m.. âIâm just basically not getting enough sleep because Iâm watching the baby 40 hours a week and doing my job 40 hours a week. Itâs really rough.â
Dunham feels sheâs lucky to have an understanding employer who told her earlier this year that theyâd be cutting all of their employees some slack because of the pandemic. But at the time, she added, everyone was assuming day care would be up and running by mid-summer. âIt might be that I have to dial back my hours, which of course means I will get paid less.â
This kind of calculus already depresses womenâs wages and makes it harder for their careers to progress. According to the National Womenâs Law Center, mothers are typically only paid 71 cents for every dollar paid to fathers. In fact, a lot of recent research into the gender pay gap has found that much of it is simply due to the constraints on working mothers. For instance, a 2018 analysis of data from Denmark â which offers a counterpoint to the United States in terms of social safety net, yet still has a very large and persistent gender wage gap â found that womenâs earnings drop significantly after having their first child, while menâs earnings arenât affected at all. And crucially, several studies in the U.S. and other countries have found that the trajectory of wages for women who donât have children resembles those of men, whether they have kids or not (although some research has actually suggested that becoming a father can contribute to menâs career success).
This disparity is particularly intense for women of color. Black mothers are paid only 54 cents for every dollar paid to a white father, according to NWLC; for Latina mothers, itâs 46 cents. Low-income women of color are also among the likeliest to have lost their jobs in the current recession. And theyâre disproportionately likely to be the child-care workers who are being asked to come back to work, sometimes in unsafe working conditions, for low wages. âWeâre in a vicious cycle where we need child care as one of the tools to get women to equal pay, and yet unequal pay is one of the primary reasons that women are pushed into staying home,â Boteach said.
Leaving the workforce, even if itâs just for a year or two, has ripple effects that can follow a woman for the rest of her life, even depressing her earnings in retirement. Finding a new job after a few years on hiatus can be very difficult for mothers, who may be stereotyped as less serious about their careers because they took time off to be with their children. One study from 2007 found that mothers were perceived to be less competent than fathers, and their recommended salaries were also lower.
During this pandemic, you can already see the disproportionate impact taking shape. The unemployment rate for women in April was 16.2 percent, higher than it has been in any month since at least 1948, before dropping to 11.7 percent in June â a percentage point higher than the rate for men (10.6 percent). Even more striking, labor force participation for women dipped to 54.7 percent in April before rising to 56.1 percent last month. Both of those numbers are reminiscent of the rates for women from the 1980s â back when the very notion of women in the workforce was still gaining momentum.6
Wertz has no plans to leave her job â at least for now. âI worked incredibly hard to get to where I am now,â she said. âI essentially paid my way through school with no family support. For years I worked entirely too hard for not enough money.â Already, she worries that sheâs perceived differently in the workplace because sheâs a mother. âEven if it was just a year, I know how that gap would look on my resume,â she said. âIf I had to take that step back, I just donât know if Iâd recover from it.â

No longer lost in translation, a Whisky Touristâs Guide to Japan
Tokyo has long had a special place in my heart, when I visited the first time I was a whisky fan who was exploring a city that had long been a fascination to me, now a decade later I returned with work and my experiences were a little different this time. Here is the GreatDrams whisky tourist's guide to Japan.
Check out the GreatDrams Ultimate Bar Guide to Tokyo too
Also see the detailed look at the Hakushu Distillery
Finally check out the most unrepeatable Japanese whisky tasting I've ever taken part in
Japan is more westernised now, easy to navigate and easy to communicate. Only time I needed my Google Translate app was in Duty Free to explain the concept of a flight transfer. Last time I was here it felt like another world, now it feels like my world; easier to navigate and communicate than France was when last there a year ago.
But has this westernisation come at a cost? Iâm not sure in truth, but there were obvious let downs for me; I had spent ages pre-trip relearning business customs, phrases for getting around and how to order various sushi and drinks, but none of that was needed. And only one bar, Bar Butler, hand carved the ice balls whereas last time I was in town every bar did.
Maybe I have a romantic view of my last trip here a full decade ago, tho unlikely as I remember it vividly as I was ill for much of it with a form of Guillaume-Barre disease that effectively paralysed all the muscles in my face, meaning I had to manually chew and drink all drinks including neat whisky through a straw (would not be able to do that in the West now, but straws and plastic bags are everywhere here) which set in six hours after I landed in Japan and lasted until ten days after I was home. It was scary but I was so convinced Iâd never be back here, and I am not one to really dwell on stuff like that, that I travelled the whole city, saw it and experienced it all. Who knew; the face freeze might have spread elsewhere as Guillaume-Barre often does, but it normally starts from the legs up, so I had to get on with things whilst I could.
Hence why I donât think there is a huge amount of romantic rose tinted glasses retrospection here⊠although last time I did get to meet a monkey and have a photo with him, though like most photos from that trip I look miserable despite having an absolute belter as my face muscles could not raise a smile⊠I must have been the moodiest-looking tourist ever.
What hasnât changed is the how busy and the extreme individuality of nearly every citizen within a culture of extreme conformity.
One of the things I was most impressed with was the people; they are so approachable and gentle, even if they cannot speak English they do their best to work out what you are saying.
The best example of this was when I was bar-hunting I kept getting to the address on Google and then drawing a blank as the addresses are so random and there are so many floors to each building with very few properly sign-posted that it is so hard to work out how to get in there unless you know the area. With that in mind I had to ask a LOT of people for help with directions and two in particular were incredible. If they canât direct you they will walk you where you need to go, as noted in my Ultimate Bar Guide to Tokyo, âthere was one guy who walked five blocks in circles asking people until it was clear it was impossible to find the place, then there was the guy who walked back from where he was going to discover the bar was on the 8th floor of his apartment block and he never knew. Be prepared to clock the steps in trying to hunt them downâ.
Unbelievable.
[divider]BARS[/divider]
Japanese whisky was once the pride of each bar, now a selection of limited edition and single cask Scotches haves replaced that as they cater more for locals - which is understandable, but a challenge for tourists.
If youâre looking for bars, firstly check out my Ultimate Bar Guide to Tokyo, but here are the ones I would highly recommend:

[divider]BUYING WHISKY IN JAPAN[/divider]
No whisky tourist's guide to Tokyo would be complete without a list of retailers you should try to visit if youâre looking for interesting whiskies, although there are no guarantees that there will be any gems, but you simply never know and ranges seem to change daily in some of them:
Liquors Hasegawa
http://www.liquors-hasegawa.com
ă104-0028 Tokyo, ChĆ«Ć, Yaesu, 2 Chomeâ1, ć
«éæŽČć°äžèĄäž4ć·
Liquor Mountain
1-2-16, Kabuki-cho, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo
Shinanoya World Wine and Foods - Shinjuku
Absolutely brilliant range of bottles - including limited edition Scotch and Irish whiskeys, as well as standard Japanese bottlings. ă160-0021 Tokyo, æ°ćźżćșKabukicho, 1 Chomeâ12â9 ăżăăăăă«
A family-run liquor store about 300Â metres down the road (east)
Just down the road from World and Liquor Mountain, Iâm pretty sure it was a mom and pop store and was crazy cluttered, but at the back of the shop was a glass-fronted cabinet with a load of local bottles as well as some Scotch offerings and various interesting Japanese bottles too.
Isetan Department store
Great store, like the Harrods of Tokyo, and not only has it got a few great bottles there you can buy samples of many of the bottles they sell so you can try the stuff as well as buying it.
ă160-0022 3-14-1, Shinjuku, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo
Isetan Duty Free store near the Ginza Station
Address: 104-8212Â 4-6-16, Ginza, Chuo-ku, Tokyo
The best part of this store is that, whilst their range is super-limited, you can buy the bottles and pick them up at the airport once you are past security to save on your luggage packing, given you will probably have other bottles to pack in as well!
[divider]MOVING AROUND THE COUTRY VISITING DISTILLERIES[/divider]
Tokyo, and Japan a whole, is really easy to move around, make sure before you travel you get a JR Pass from jrpass.com, it will cost £206 with special delivery and arrives super-swiftly. This will be your gateway to Tokyo and the whole of Japan as, as long as you use any of the JR lines which take you all over the place.
$rfsn_creative.generate('refersion_client/4644/creatives/dynamic/30030-d1efe313b3b721082c0bc9f5b5a4a605.json', { aid: '1445123.87f2d' });
Make sure you get a SkyRoam device, I hired one for around ÂŁ115 plus ÂŁ7 per day I was away and it was invaluable; it is effectively âinternet in your pocketâ and actually felt like I was carrying âthe internetâ each day. Good battery, allows you to connect five devices at once to it and mimics a local 4G network which you then connect to without paying more than your daily fee through SkyRoam. Marvellous. At times I got better connection than I do in my office! Buy here, and yes for this one I have an affiliate link as I was so impressed with it. Use coupon code GREATDRAMS to save 10% on your booking... win-win.Â
One thing to say up front; donât expect many, if any distillery exclusives to add to your collection, Suntory do not seem to see the value in them and the distilleries I visited were too young to have mature spirit, although Asaka had bottles of their spirit that had been aged in various casks for up to six months available for around ÂŁ28 - ÂŁ40.
Gaia Flow
Travel on the Bullet Train from Shinagawa Station, which takes about 50 minutes - I would advise going to the ticket booking office and reserving a seat free of charge as these trains get really packed and you do not want to stand all that way.
Once you arrive at the Shizuoka Station, take a 35 minute taxi to Gaia Flow. Taxis will be outside the station to the left, and they are unlikely to know where you are going so show them the address and if you have a GPS device pre-load it so they can have a look.
Definitely call or email ahead of your visit as their visitor centre wonât be fully open until mid-way through 2019 but they are set up for brief tours if you so desire but it is courteous to let them know before you arrive so they can be free.
Asaka
From where you are staying take the JR line to Tokyo Station, which is MASSIVE, and take the bullet train to Kohriyama Station which will take about 80 minutes if memory serves. Then get a taxi to the Asaka Distillery. Again get in touch before going to ensure they are available and able to show you around. They have a shop which take cash only, but where you can try numerous young versions of their spirit including one maturing in Mizunara wood. They usually have limited edition whiskies in for purchase too that are limited to around 300 bottles each.
Hakushu
[gallery type="rectangular" link="file" ids="33044,33045,33046"]
Nearest station: Kobuchizawa, 1 hours 59 minutes from Shinjuku station in central Tokyo, then a 15 minute taxi to the distillery (or use the courtesy bus put on by the distillery at the weekend if it works with your itinerary). Simple.
[divider]IN SUMMARY[/divider]
Check out the GreatDrams Ultimate Bar Guide to Tokyo too
Also see the detailed look at the Hakushu Distillery
Finally check out the most unrepeatable Japanese whisky tasting I've ever taken part in
Japan is a phenomenal country with awesome people and an amazing amount of things to see and culture to experience so make sure you plan well and pay attention to train times as they are NEVER late.

ABOUT THE FARMÂ Â Alford Olson, a Swedish immigrant, purchased the property in 1879. Throughout its existence, the farm has diversified its activities, but it has always essentially operated as a subsistence farm. In its early days it was a source of timber and hops. After hops declined in value, the Olson family moved into raising cows for dairy and veal, poultry and egg farming, apple harvesting, and potato farming. Mary wove rag rugs and her son Alfred took up hunting and sold pelts and bartered apples and veal.
In the 1970's the farm was rented out to various tenants and some renovations were begun on the buildings, but never completed. In 1994, after many years of vacancy and deteriorations, the City of Auburn purchased the 67 acre farm. After several years of planning and fundraising, restoration work began on the major buildings, as well as projects surrounding the restoration on Olson Creek and reclaiming the pastures from years of neglect and invasion by Himalayan blackberries. The final restoration projects were finished in 2011 and the Mary Olson Farm opened that summer for the first time to the general public. Today, visitors can tour inside the restored 1897 barn, pause and consider what life was like on a rural farm in the 1902 farmhouse, or wander through the century-old orchard and learn about the many varieties of apples and cherries Alfred Olson cultivated. Other restored and preserved structures on the property include a garage, weaving shed, chicken coop, outhouse, smokehouse, and 19th century wagon road.
Amenities available for use in the barn artist âstudio spaceâ include: large indoor works space complete with electrical outlets and lights, water available from an exterior hot and cold sink or hose, Sanican bathroom onsite, and tables and chairs available for artistâs use. More information about the Mary Olson Farm can be found at:Â http://wrvmuseum.org/visit_the_farm.html SELECTED PARTICIPANTS MUST AGREE TO
Sign agreement with the City of Auburn about residency plans, expectations and guidelines.
Leave the space in the same or better condition as when they moved in. The farm is on the National Register of Historic Places and as such absolutely NO changes can be made to the buildings, gardens or landscape.
Understand that the initial $2,000 portion stipend payment is made at the beginning of the residency, and that payments cannot be made until contracts have been fully processed. The remaining $1,500 will be retained until all of the expected residency requirements are completed.
Understand that the artwork displayed must be appropriate for the public realm.
Install and de-install your own work in a professional fashion for the final exhibition.
Partner with the City of Auburn to market and promote the exhibition. Exhibits are publicized through city-generated press releases, printed materials, social media, and the Cityâs web site at www.auburnwa.gov/arts.

Meet The Genetic Sleuths Solving Decades-Old Trans Murders
On the blustery morning of November 26, 1983, a beachgoer spotted a still-warm body in Half Moon Bay, California. The victim, who looked about 20 years old, had been stabbed more than 20 times and left in the sands near Pillar Point Bluff. Their wrists were slashed, their face bruised and swollen. (Out of respect for the victimâs unknown gender identity, Motherboard is using they/them as a pronoun.)
At their time of death, the person was presenting as a stylish, slender woman. They were 5-foot-10 inches tall, wearing an auburn pixie cut and casual clothes: yellow capri pants and a turtleneck over a foam-form bra, fishnet hose, and two pairs of feminine underwear. A Madonna-style white metal crucifix hung around their neck.Â
When taken to a medical examiner, the victim's body was misidentified as male, and nobody ever came to claim it. In an effort to identify the individual, cops dubbed them âJohn Doe #83-26â and released a crime sketch depicting a man. It failed to convey their gender identity or expression, including that they were likely wearing makeup and going by a womanâs name.
The case of Pillar Point Doe soon went cold and their identity remained a mystery for 35 yearsâuntil two genealogy sleuths recently cracked the case. The trans couple, who specialize in cold cases involving trans and gender non-conforming people, found the forgotten victimâs birth name through an online DNA database, reviving the hunt for their killer.
âI would work until I passed outâ
Lee and Anthony Redgrave traced Pillar Point Doeâs relatives from Wales to Utah using the family history site GEDmatch, known for its role in finding the notorious Golden State Killer. The search was close to home for the Redgraves, who toiled obsessively for months without pay.Â
âI would work until I passed out. Iâd cry myself to sleep at night, and have dreams where I was woken up thinking that [the victim] was telling me their name,â said Anthony, who along with Lee, ran a small team for the DNA Doe Project, a non-profit that identifies deceased people through forensic genealogy.
Lee added: âThere are a lot of factorsâand homicide detectives have absolutely no idea how to do this.â
The Redgraves were inspired by personal tragedy to help solve the case. In January 2018, a transgender friend of theirs, Christa Steele-Knudslienâa beauty pageant organizer and trans activistâwas beaten and stabbed to death. The attack, which came after another friendâs suicide, sent Lee spiraling into a depression.
âIt really tore my brain up,â said Lee, 41, a non-binary night owl with arms full of tattoos. âI got depressed, and when that happens I usually throw myself into a project.â
Anthony and Lee Redgrave
When a true crime-loving friend recommended they volunteer for the DNA Doe Project, it seemed like a good distraction.âPartially, Iâm sure, it was her being like, âYou have to stop being in a funk,ââ Lee said. âWe both felt really helpless about Christaâand this was something we actually could help with.â
They had plenty of experience with genetic genealogy, but they knew the limits of DNA and family tree matches for transgender victims. Database searches often lead to âdead namesââbirth names victims no longer use, and arenât known by in their communities. And most law enforcement systems donât allow searches across sex marker categories, blinding them to some gender non-conforming folks.
A âtrans-informedâ perspective could shed some light, considering trans people are more likely to be the target of violent, unresolved crime. âBeing a trans person, I know Iâve been incredibly fortunate not to have had a bunch of horrible things happen to me,â said Anthony, 38, a soft-spoken Civil War buff with a long ginger beard. âThat was a driving force.â
When the Redgraves first heard about the Pillar Point Doe case in July 2018, they knew almost immediately it was ripe for a genetic gumshoeing.
An Unlikely Partnership
The victim, who was carrying no identification, had been found only two hours after they were stabbed in the neck and chest, allowing cops to collect a piece of blood-soaked blotter paper known as a âblood card.â This meant Pillar Point Doeâs DNA didnât have to be extracted from bone, a longer and more expensive process. And yet it would likely show a complete picture of the victimâs entire genetic makeup, one that could be extracted in a lab and uploaded to GEDmatch, they said.
But the couple still had to convince the San Mateo County Sheriffâs Office to hand over the blood sampleâand to team up with them on the investigation. Â
The Redgraves had a hunch cops would be willing. Their request came on the heels of the Golden State Killerâs arrest a few counties away, and in a section of northern California that tends to be queer-friendly.
âThe thought was it was a good case because it was the Bay Area. We expected there would be more friendly law enforcement and a LBGTQ liaison in the Bay Area,â said Anthony. âWe had to give an elevator pitch to the department, like, âThis is why we want this specific case, and this is how it will benefit you.ââ
The cops, it turned out, were game. The Redgraves signed non-disclosure agreements andâ in a rare moveâpolice released Pillar Point Doeâs private case files, including the blood card along with crime scene and coroner photos.Â
The Redgraves agreed to do the genetic sleuthing, then pass off next of kin matches to police, who would talk to relatives, collect DNA samples and handle the investigation from there.
It was an unlikely partnership. Many trans people refuse to work with cops since law enforcement has routinely targeted the community, trans activists and experts said. According to a 2015 survey, at least 57 percent of trans respondents said they would be afraid or uncomfortable going to police for help.
âIt comes from being abused or not taken seriously by officers who historically have been disrespectful or dismissive of trans people,â said Rodrigo Heng-Lehtinen, a policy expert for the National Center for Transgender Equality. âThereâs a real stigma. Sometimes just being visibly trans in public is enough to get stopped or harassed by police on suspicion of being a sex workerâwhether or not you actually are.âÂ
Cases with trans victims have long been de-prioritized by cops, who assume victims are sex workers, living a âhigh riskâ lifestyle or are âdisownedâ by their families, Heng-Lehtinen said.Â
But a lack of trans awareness is bad for police, too. Detectives who are ignorant about the community are more likely to use a transgender personâs dead name because it was printed on a government-issued ID, or to seek outdated information from estranged family members who knew them pre-transition, he said. It keeps those investigators from understanding the whole picture.Â
âIf youâre an officer whoâs asking around for Mark Smith and everybody in the neighborhood knows her as Marcia, thatâs not helping anybody,â Heng-Lehtinen said.
Lee chalks it up to lack of education and training. âIf you look at popular media over the past 20 years, the characters that are dressing opposite of what theyâre âsupposed to beâ are usually trying to trick somebody or get away with somethingïżœïżœïżœthe end of âAce Venturaâ is a classic example, or âThe Crying Game,ââ Lee said. âYou get a lot of that mentality still in law enforcement, just because they havenât had an alternate education.â
Identifying Doe
The Redgraves quickly got to work on creating a more gender-accurate forensic sketch of Pillar Point Doe. In the 80s and 90s, at least three drawings had been made of them, all wildly different.Â
One showed a âpartially-Asian gothâ guy with boxy slicked-back black hair, Lee said. Another depicted a shaggy-haired Val Kilmer look-alike with almond eyes. All were of men, and none were quite right.
âIt seemed like [police artists] were trying to make this person look male,â Lee said. âConsidering they had natural hair, not a wig, and were wearing pants with multiple layers of hose and underwear, itâs likely that they were tucking to have a more female appearance,â Lee said, citing details about the victim's outfit.
âThey were probably attempting to pass as female as opposed to someone who was [a] drag performer or engaging in prostitution while cross-dressing.â
Based on those clues, the male sketch on fliers would have likely been lost on Pillar Point Doeâs queer âchosen familyââor anyone who saw them the night of the murder, the couple said. So using crime scene and coroner photos, the Redgraves and an artist came up with a new sketch that depicts the victim with a more feminine look, a yellow outfit and natural-style makeup.
In March 2019, Pillar Pointâs blood card came back from the lab. It showed Pillar Point Doeâs entire genome sequence on a huge hard drive.Â
From their cozy home office in central Massachusetts, the Redgraves and a small team plugged those chunks of genetic code into GEDmatch, which compares DNA from testing sites like 23andMe and ancestry.com to find possible relatives with similar genetic makeups. Unlike law enforcementâs Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), the site can pinpoint distant ancestors, not just immediate family members.Â
It works like this: Say you find a painting in a park with no signature and you want to learn the name of the artist. If you could somehow scan the pieceâs complex colors and brush strokes into a massive database of art, you might be able to match it to the person who made it. Other paintings by the artist with similar patternsâa distant cousin, in this analogyâmay also pop up.
In general, DNA evidence is only as accurate as the people who collect and analyze it. Technicians have been known to misinterpret samples, and police have submitted tainted or mixed genetic material. But Pillar Pointâs blood card appeared to be a solid sample, the couple said. Â
The search led the Redgraves to a small town in Wales, where Pillar Point Doeâs distant relatives once worked at a glove factory. âWe kept finding people who descended from this really specific family, but then finding the right branch turned out to be really hard,â Lee said.
Scores of unwed mothers hailed from the town for unknown reasons, leading to frustrating genealogy dead-ends. âIt happened over and over again in this one little town,â Lee said.
The couple built a massive family tree and cross-referenced names with public records. They traced that to a group of relatives to a Utah pioneer community with roots in the Mormon Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. âWhen you work on someoneâs genealogy, you get to know them in a really intimate way through their ancestors,â Lee said. âYou know youâre getting close when they start looking like who youâre looking for.â
The couple soon discovered Pillar Pointâs cousins belonged to an intermarried clan of families. Some men had multiple wives and children, amounting to a genealogy headache. âItâs a problem thatâs common in isolated religious communities. The fancy word is endogamy,â Lee said. âYou end up with a whole lot of half-relations and unreliable predictions.â
Setbacks
Then a fiasco unfolded. The arrest of the Golden State Killer in 2018 had sparked privacy fears from critics who claimed GEDMatch could be used for nefarious reasons. When a criminal case centering on a minor stirred up more controversy on the site the next year, the owners abruptly purged the âlaw enforcement matchingâ section of it in May 2019, according to the Redgraves.
With no warning, it left the couple with only about 20 percent of the genetic clues theyâd had before. âThink of it as the number of letters turned around on your âWheel of Fortuneâ puzzle. [Afterwards] there were 80 percent less letters, and we still had to guess the phrase,â Lee said.
The setback forced them to get creative. They sought uploads from people who descended from early settlers in Utah, along with the Mormon church, and mapped out âclustersâ of potential relatives.
Anthony spent hours tinkering with DNA Painter, a tool that helps genealogists make sense of matches. Eventually, it led to Pillar Pointâs possible great grandfather.Â
During an all-nighter in October 2019, they had a breakthrough. When they got to one of the possible great grandfatherâs relatives, they checked records for proof of the personâs life after 1983, and found none. Lee pulled out Pillar Pointâs crime scene photo and checked it against a high school yearbook photo of the grandchild. Â
It all added up:Â Here was the long-forgotten face of Pillar Point Doe.
They both burst into tears. âThere were periods of crying and shaking for a few days afterwards. It was really intense,â Lee said.
The team then sent Pillar Pointâs birth name to cops, who collected DNA from a relative to confirm the match, reinvigorating the investigation.
San Mateo County police have since declined to release Pillar Point Doeâs birth nameâor to allow the couple toâsaying it could hurt their hunt for the killer. âThis homicide is actively being investigated. Unfortunately, disclosing information about the details may hinder our investigation,â Sergeant William Young, from the San Mateo County Sheriffâs Office, told Motherboard.
Cold Case, Close To Home
Now, the Redgraves want more answers. âIdeally, police will find the perpetrator,â Lee said. â[Cops] definitely want to tell us something but they canât. It makes us feel hopeful.â
Not long ago, Lee got a tattoo of poppies in Pillar Point Doeâs honor. It was inspired by the California flower bloom that could be seen from space in March 2019, the week the couple began searching for the victim's identity. âI am absolutely forever changed from working on this case,â Lee said.
Ultimately, the Redgraves hope Pillar Point Doe will be remembered for who they wereâa complex and loved person, not a forgotten John Doe. âHopefully someone who loved them will carry on their memory,â Lee said.
The couple now runs the Trans Doe Task Force, a research group that helps police and medical examiners with transgender and gender-expansive cold cases. Recently, they launched a database that allows for DNA comparisons across sex marker categories. They also founded their own firm, Redgrave Research Forensic Services, and Anthony has helped train law enforcement departments on five continents.
These days, the couple has a small framed high school photo of Pillar Point Doe in their home, near portraits of other people from cases close to their hearts.Â
âPillar Point has become part of our family. I feel like we are basically like their foster parents,â Anthony said. âIâm going to feel that way until I know exactly how this case ends.â

Staying at Home with Young Living https://ift.tt/34ywfgK
Hello, DIYShowOff friends!Â
How are you holding up? Hanging in there? Adjusting to the new routine of staying in if you can, homeschooling, getting things done around the house, binge-watching Netflix series, getting outdoors? Are you a part of an essential business and working long hours? If so â thank you so much for putting yourself at risk to serve others. You are so appreciated!
As a blogger, small business owner, AirBnB host; a little has changed in my routine. No travel means no business for the AirBnB but Iâm grateful to continue to work from home with my blogging. My wellness workshop is closed but the Young Living side of my business continues online.Â
At first I felt a little helpless, wishing there was more I could do. Then I realized that I can absolutely continue to serve and bless others through Young Living. I know. I know. Network marketing. Believe me, it wasnât for me either. I have zero sales skills. I didnât have a background in direct sales so my opinion was based on hearsay so I wanted no part of it. I simply purchased the products because a friend shared and the essential oil I tried worked. Ever hear someone say that Young Living has been life changing for them? Thatâs my story too.Â
Why? I was introduced six years ago at a time when again, I was feeling helpless. Two very close family members were diagnosed with breast cancer (with no previous family history and negative gene testing). So, itâs evident that the environment and lifestyle choices are a contributing factor. And it made me take a look at my lifestyle. Iâve been blessed with good health my entire life, but I knew my unhealthy choices would likely catch up with me one day. At that time, it made me realize that I didnât want to put off that healthier lifestyle to âsome dayâ when Iâd be in desperate need of making changes and I didnât want to look back and have regrets.Â
So, Young Living became that baby step in light of the wake up call. I began switching out the harsh chemical-laden products in our home. Around the same time, my husband who does the cooking was starting to incorporate healthier eating habits and we started looking at supplements for whole body support. And shortly after, I had a grandchild on the way and knew that it was time to stop smoking once and for all. One thing led to another. Iâm still a work in progress but I am confident that just those changes have made a difference for us. For the past six years, Iâve havenât experienced feeling unwell at all. ::knock on wood::Â
Iâm sure by now youâve heard of Young Living. What is this company? Young Living has been around for more than 25 years. They are the pioneer and world leader in essential oils. They have a seed to seal guarantee, meaning they control the entire process of bringing us everyday products. They arenât purchasing something and slapping on a label. They have strict guidelines when it comes to ingredients, farming practices and more.Â
How it works. To me, itâs similar to a SAMs Club/Costo membership. We have a SAMs Club membership and pay $45/year for access to shop their store. Over a period of 10 years, weâve payed $450 to shop there. I have an ID card to show for it. With Young Living, I purchased one of the starter kits. Now I have a lifetime membership to wholesale pricing (24% off everything) with no yearly fees. No obligation to sell. And a premium starter kit for $165 is a diffuser, 12 essential oils and some samples â so a LOT to show for what I spent.Â
I have to share the business opportunity since at a time when so many are stuck at home without a paycheck and maybe considering an online/work from home business at this time. If youâve been looking at companies that you think would be a good fit, I believe Young Living is a good fit for ANYONE, for EVERYONE! It works well with just about any hobby. And most importantly, Young Living provides products that everyone uses and needs! Consumables. Jewelry, nail polish, leggings, cookware, etc. â those are all fun and I support anyone who puts themselves out there with creating their own business and brand (when it aligns with my lifestyle) but If youâre into yoga, oils are a great fit. If you love to cook, the vitality line is a great fit. Love to decorate? A beautiful home begins with a safe environment. Like makeup? Savvy is a beautiful safe collection! Wellness is for everyone!Â
Purchasing one of the starter kits is all it takes. Did you know thereâs even a basic kit option? How many businesses do you know you can start off with just a $35 investment?
So whatâs the catch? Monthly sales quotas to remain a rep? No. Big fees to stay active? No. Young Living wants you to be a product of the product. So all that is required in a month that you do have a bonus/commission coming to you is that you purchase 50 pv (approx. $50 order) monthly of products you choose and use personally to earn fast start and sign up bonuses of the people you enroll or a 100 pv (approx. $100) to earn commissions. Young Living has one of the best compensation and ranking plans. Theyâve implemented new Silverbound incentives. AND you have an entire team for encouragement, inspiration, motivation, education and training and support. An amazing group â maybe even some bloggers youâll recognize!Â
We use our diffuser daily. I was a designer candle junkie but wasnât really aware or didnât care about the toxic ingredients and synthetic fragrances I was breathing in. Until I knew better that even a small step in a healthy direction makes a big difference over time. Not only does my home smell pretty, I can diffuse essential oils with a purpose. Lavender or Peace & Calming for relaxation and sleep. Thieves for cleaning the air and supporting a healthy immune system. A combo of lavender, lemon and peppermint for season support. So many options!Â
Some of Young Living essential oils are labeled for dietary use. So instead of reaching for something I bought at the store with side effects or chemicals, I can grab DiGize for supporting a healthy digestive system â all things digestive! Or have you heard of the health benefits of Frankincense? I add it to my Ningxia Red (a juice for supporting a healthy immune system and energy) daily.Â
Do I have to purchase regularly? Will things just show up at my door and be deducted from my bank account? No. They DO have an Essential Rewards program that is completely optional. And since we do purchase regularly, weâve opted in. I earn 25% back on my monthly orders and that adds up fast! There are monthly promotions that have stocked our supply or introduced us to something knew. We simply ditched what we were buying at WalMart and switched to buying the better healthier brand from Young Living. Hereâs a list of a few things:
toothpaste
mouthwash
deodorant
household cleaner concentrate
hand purifierÂ
makeupÂ
lotion
shampoo
condition
supplements!
essential oils
baby wipes
diaper rash cream
pain cream
CBD oil
muscle rub
massage oil
cough drops
hormone, emotional, immune supportÂ
laundry detergent
dishwasher detergent
fruit and veggie cleaner
acne treatment
If I give it more thought, I know I could go on and on. So in love with the variety of products available!
I also love the community that comes along with it. Rather than wondering what does this oil do?, Iâm a part of an amazing supportive group of friends to hold my hand. I had no idea where to start. It all seemed so overwhelming â a good reason for my procrastination. But having access to the educational resources and community for support has been a lifesaver! Thatâs one of my favorite parts! So who you join under does matter. And I would be honored if you chose me. Iâve been a part of Young Living for six years and want freedom and purpose and abundance and wellness for everyone! 10 Best Android Photo App Templates
1. Photo Frame Editor
If youâve been looking for a template to create an app with a wide selection of digital photo framing options, then check out the Photo Frame Editor. The Editor offers frames for every occasion, including birthdays, Valentines, Christmas, weddings, etc.Â
It supports all screen resolutions available on mobiles and tablets. Users are able to zoom in and zoom out, rotate their photo 360°, and drag it easily into the selected photo frame. Framed photos can shared on social media, and also saved and used as digital wallpaper. For ad revenues, it is compatible with AdMob and StartApp.Â
2. Natural Frames
If youâre somewhat of a nature lover and prefer a template that offers frames that are a bit more earthy, then Natural Frames might be more your cup of tea. The template doesnât use photo frames in the same way that the Photo Frame Editor template does, rather it enables users to superimpose their photos within a nature shot in such a way that theyâre framed by nature.Â
The template has over 20 natural frames. It also offers a number of fonts and effects that users can experiment with to further embellish their images. Photos can be taken with camera or selected from existing gallery. Enhanced images can be shared via a variety of social networks. It comes integrated with Admob.Â
3. Photo Hoardings
The Photo Hoardings template takes photo framing to new heights. Apps created with this template allow users to create a splash screen by digitally embedding their photos in impossible places like a billboard, the side of a bus, or the back of a truck.Â
It has a clean and easy-to-use interface and has selection of over 25 hoarding frames available. Images can be shared via variety of social networks, messengers, email, etc.
4. Photo Mirror Effect
The Photo Mirror Effect template allows you to create a new app in a matter of minutes with just a basic knowledge of Java programming. As its name suggests, the app allows the end user to create a mirror image effect with their photos.Â
Users can choose between mirror or water effect, move image left to right or up and down to perfect the mirroring effect, and spice up their photos with 10 photo effect filters. And there is an option to make some money through ads with AdMob.Â
5. Funny Face Maker
The Funny Face Maker app template helps developers create one of those incredibly silly and irresistible apps that allow users to construct funny pictures of themselves, their friends and family. The template provides a huge array of quirky and amusing objects and effects for developers to select for inclusion in their app.
For the end user, the app is very easy to use. Using a drag-and-drop system, users can resize and move the object(s) as needed, and save the image. They just need to take a photo with their camera or select the photo they want to manipulate from their photo library, and then select the fun object or objects they want to use.Â
6. Men In Suit Photo Maker
The Men In Suit Photo Maker app template is in the same vein as the Funny Face Maker template. Itâs intended to deliver a bit of lighthearted entertainment to the end user, by allowing them to match a face to a wide selection of snazzy suits and presumably to share the results with friends and family.Â
It comes with a simple guide for customization. You can Also make some revenue through banner and interstitial ads.Â
.
7. Photo Editor
Photo collage apps make it so very easy to recombine photos. Developers can customize the Photo Editor app template to create their own wonderful or wacky app that allows end users to cut backgrounds and subject matter in any photograph and interchange them with others.Â
The app provides over 15 HD backgrounds that you can include in the app. You can remove the actual photo background and replace it with any background you wish. Cut people out and put them on another background. And swap faces by cutting out one person's face and pasting it on another. And yes, share your creations on social media.Â

New York City is a city of pop ups. Weâve been to a few here and there while living in other cities, but it seems like in NYC you can visit a new pop up weekly. We love that they create a sense of urgency to check them out and almost parallels the fact that we set up shop in a city for a year. Itâs like our home office is a pop up too!
A big thank you to CORT for sponsoring this post. All opinions are always our own. This post may contain affiliate links, where we receive a small commission on sales of the products that are linked at no additional cost to you. Read our full disclosure for more info. What is a Pop Up?
So before we get into the pop up shops weâve been to, letâs talk about what a pop up is in the first place. Essentially, it is a business that opens for a limited time with a clear st and end date. They come in many different forms but most of them are exclusive or special in some way. The goal is never to be permanent. Sometimes they are only around for a month or theyâll stick around for a year before moving to another city (sounds like us right?).
Technically homegrown pop ups are everywhere. They are as simple as someone putting up an umbrella and selling products in a busy area. They are also your Halloween stores, Christmas shops, and firework stands. But as their popularity has increased, much more extravagant pop ups are being used by companies for marketing purposes. Most of the time, they are aimed to be very Instagram friendly.
Because weâre always popping up in a new city, weâve pnered with CORT during our time in NYC. It helps us worry less about our space so that we can focus on exploring the city! Plus, we think our place looks pretty good

Types of Pop Ups
Pop Up Shops â Temporary stores. We see a lot of these, especially during the holidays.
Pop Up Restaurants â Some are run by chefs who are trying something experimental while others are more traditional restaurants with plans only to stay open for a few months. Also you can check out this blog post CORT did about the Popularity of Pop-Up Restaurants.
Pop Up Art Installations â They can be more traditional installations, but often times now, they are also meant to create photo opportunities for Instagram. We also included some exhibitions in this category.
Pop Up Events â These cover the rest. They can come in the form of an impromptu listening py to release a new album, to a temporary themed bar. These are typically meant to create hype around an upcoming event, release, or product.

Current Pop Ups in New York
Color Factory in Soho
251 Spring Street, 10013, map
When: August 20, 2018 â February 28, 2019. Thurs to Tues 10AM â 11PM Admission: $38
Unlike most pop ups, Color Factory spent more time on the experience rather than setting up little studio spaces to take photos. Several rooms had a snack or dessert that complemented the room. You donât even need to ask people to take your photo. They have cameras set up in some of the more popular photos spots, and you get photos emailed to you immediately.
Rosé Mansion in Midtown
445 5th Ave, 10016, map
When: Opening June 1, 2019 Admission: $45 (Happy Hour $35 2-4:30PM Mon-Fri) Recommended Time: Weekdays
This pop up is all about Rosé. Walk through themed rooms, great photo ops, while sampling 8 or more wines. Afterward, head to the Grand Tasting Lounge where you can buy an additional glass or bottle of wine as well as snacks. Everyone must be 21 years old to enter. The popular area is the bathtub and if you go during daylight, it has decent natural lighting.

âThe exhibition highlights Escherâs journey as an ist â from his earlier works of nature and landscape in the 1920s and 1930s, to the figurative and abstract developed in the late 1930s, through the 1960s when he sought to explore infinity.â

Walk among hundred of butterflies from all over the world.
Jump for Joy: Bouncy Castle of Breasts
233 5th Ave, 10016, map
When: Ongoing Admission: $3.50 in addition to museum admission
A bouncy castle made up of giant inflatable breasts makes for fun photos and video (adults only). We werenât that impressed with the museum itself and opted not to pay the additional $3.50 for the photo but plenty of people were taking advantage of it.

Candytopia celebrates all things ! Maybe we should let the families have this one. There were tons of kids (at least the time slot we went to â the first one in the morning). They all ran straight for the confetti and marshmallow pit, and at one point there was a kid crawling over me with no parents in sight.
Needless to say, it was extremely difficult to get any photos. Luckily, when it was time for everyone to get out of the pit, we asked if we could have an extra minute for a photo, which the lackluster employees did not seem happy about. Gotta do what you gotta do for the gram (or in my case, the blog).

Pint Shop by Museum of Ice Cream, Chelsea

Interactive grocery experience featuring immersive installations. There will also be a Tasting Room that costs $28 and weekly Pint Sessions from June 14th to July 12th.
When we visited during the week, there was still a line waiting to enter, but since we had Tasting Room tickets, they let us in right away. Once inside, we waited to take photos in each of the giant pints and walked around the grocery aisles. Five minutes before our tasting, we headed to the back.
The tasting was a lot of fun! Itâs less of a tasting and more of a science experiment. You get to throw on lab coats, learn about flavoring ice cream, and even taste different types of vanilla. Afterwards, you get a sampling of each of their flavors. The best p is that everyone who does the a tasting gets to take a pint home!
Grown Up Flowers by Playlab: 5/2018
These are 6 inflatable flower installations scattered throughout Midtown (4 are in or near the Rockefeller Center). 5 of them are outside and the purple one is inside the Hippodrome NYC.
Bob's Burgers Pop Up - Dec 2017
Weâre both obsessed with Bobâs Burgers, so when we heard about a Bobâs Burger Pop Up, we were willing to wait hours in line to try the burger of the day. They served a different burger from the show every day for a week. It also included some goodies, which was a nice surprise.
Raquel's Dream House - MAY 2018
Multiple floors presenting pieces and furniture that you can purchase. A few fun photo spots too!
Google Pop Up - December 2017
This is probably still our favorite pop up. Google had photo opportunities set up and a truck outside where you could print your face on a marshmallow and then drink it. They had stations to learn more about products and a shoppable section for Google Home products.
Festival of Life by Yayoi Kma - December 2017
The Egg House - May 2018
Itâs all about eggs! With 5 different areas to explore (and photograph), enjoy egg themed decor and follow the story of Ellis the Egg. We loved the amount of light in this space and took advantage of all the photos ops. Egg treats from Eggloo and other egg merch is available for sale.
General Tips for Visiting Pop Ups
Best time to visit is weekdays during the day and right before it opens. Some of the more popular pop ups have a long wait.
If shooting with a DSLR, donât use auto white balance for many of these places especially if youâre in a room with a lot of unnatural colors (ie yellows at Egg House and blues at Dream Machine). We recommend using Kelvin and finding the right setting for your camera.
Bring a versatile lens and a wide angle if you want to include more of the environment in the shot. A lot of these rooms are small, so the wide angle helps a lot. We couldnât take certain shots with our DSLR (Canon 5D Mark III + 35mm Lens) because it wasnât wide enough so we just used our phones.

How To Find the Latest NYC Pop Up Events?
This one is tough! Most of them make announcements relatively last minute, so these are some ways to stay up-to-date.
Bookmark this page since weâll be updating this post as often as possible with new events.
Set up Google Alerts to see whatâs popping up in the news. If youâre not familiar with this, go to the Google Alerts page and enter âpop up new york, pop upâ into the Create an Alert section. You can then select how often you want to receive emails (as it happens, daily, or weekly). I do daily.
Follow Instagram accounts that are constantly featuring pop ups and events. You can follow our accounts (EstherJulee & JacobTheFu). We post stories from pop ups immediately. Also, you absolutely need to follow our friend at FOMOFEED who does a ton of research to hunt down all the best spots in NYC.
With so many pop ups in the city, weâre going to do our best to feature all our favorites on this blog post, but if you know of any pop ups you think we should check out, send us a message at [email protected].

Artists are welcome to offer their works for sale, but are not required to do so. All sales are handled privately between the artist and the buyer. The City of Auburn does not take a commission on any works sold through the galleries or residency program.
The artist agrees to make available their photos taken of the farm during the residency, for use by the City of Auburn and the White River Valley Museum to promote the program.
The selected artist must agree to participate in the entire residency program including all events, the final exhibition, etc. No exceptions.
Artists are welcome to have visitors during the residency, but must notify the farm caretaker of planned visitors and receive advance permission.

How to Work Your Way Out of a Food Rut
I have been through several food ruts in the past year (hello, grief!) and I thought Iâd write a post that will help me when I need help again. See also Keeping Creativity Alive.Â
OK, here we go.
Hello, Tracy. Iâm glad youâre here. Here is:
How to Work Your Way Out of a Food Rut. Â
First, you must interview yourself. Ask yourself the following questions.
How do you know youâre in a food rut?Â
and
Why are you in a food rut?Â
Right now, you know when youâre in a food rut when food isnât exciting.
Youâve been eating the same thing, youâve lost your ooomph in the kitchen and have no idea what to cook/eat.
YOU ARE BORED WITH FOOD and the pace of the internet and this idea of making NEW! EXCITING! GROUNDBREAKING! recipes can take the fun out of eating/cooking. The kitchen needs cleaning (AGAIN) when you cook and sometimes you just canât add that to your plate after working all day (sometimes in the kitchen). Having to feed two other people who have different tastebuds/likes/dislikes can feel uninspiring. When youâre trying to be healthy and good food choices, it can be so difficult.
How do you work your way out of a food rut?
MAKE CHANGES!
Remember what your Mom always used to say:
Shock your system by making something new.
A food rut is a perfect excuse to try a new recipe!
Think about your meal arsenal.
What could you add? What needs to be retired (for a bit at least!)?Â
Is there something youâve always wanted to try to make on your own? Give yourself a challenge and make something!
Was there anything that someone you cook for loved while you were out to eat recently? Maybe you can find a way to prepare it at home? Maybe you can find a way to prepare a healthier version too?
Get your brain going!
You save a lot of recipes on Pinterest to try. Check out NOM WORTHY + SHUTTERBEAN RECIPES for inspo.
If youâre trying to make better choices, check out your  A Picture of Health board if you want to see what healthy looks like.
When in doubt, check your recipes archives too. Youâve been sharing recipes for 12 years. You have a lot of inspiration. Pull from the past. Itâs ripe for the picking!
But maybe you donât have the energy to try a whole new recipe?
Throwing a new ingredient into your shopping cart to try can make a world of difference.
This herb salt has really changed your salad and popcorn game.
Itâs amazing how a simple ingredient can breath new life into your routine.
A perfect example is this crunchy garlic chili oil
youâve been enjoying for the past few months.
You added it to a lot of things and itâs helped you eat more vegetables because it tastes so good on them.
You find a lot of inspiration in a salad bar/hot bar situation.
Put a new ingredient in your lineup every time. Play with new combinations. New salad dressing! Perhaps youâll unlock a new favorite?
Thatâs how your reset button salad was invented.
Let the season dictate your menu!
Right now we have a new season coming up. Remember whatever is in season is usually less expensive and thereâs a reason why your body needs these vegetables and fruits this time of year. Spring means we can start eating lighter before we really need to during the summer months.
Check out What to Eat in Spring here.Â
A trip to the farmerâs market is super inspiring. Try something new each time. Get yourself some samples. Challenge yourself to make something different.
Go to the Asian Market. You love it there because they have a variety of ingredients youâll never see in your conventional market.
This Cold Soba Noodle Salad totally shook up food rut once.
Give yourself a challenge. A box of mac & cheese can be a solid foundation for your creativity.
Here are 10 ways you changed a box of mac & cheese.Â
You also figured out how to play with toast. Here are 12 ways to do that!
If you need the motivation to clean your house, throw a dinner party.
Food feels particular special when shared with others.
Sometimes guests have restrictions. Restrictions breed creativity. New ingredients! New recipes! This is something you thrive on. Itâs also cool to see how your family adapts to the new foods youâre sharing with guests. They get treated too!
You must never forget that:
People care less about what you serve them and are usually just so happy to be invited over for dinner.
Put all of your experience to good work!
Sometimes youâre in a food rut because you forget how many good options exist!
Write down all the things you love to eat so you have something to refer to.
It was helpful when you were figuring how to shake up Cooperâs lunch game.Â
Check out what youâve written down in your food journal for reference.
Remember all of your favorite meals. See if it changes in the next few months when you start another food journal.
Arenât you glad you have almost three months of meal ideas to pull from??!
Go out to eat. Go to a place where youâll find something to bring home into your kitchen.
Restaurants are a huge source of inspiration for you.
If youâre watching your budget, go out to breakfast or lunch. Itâs usually cheaper.
Split meals if you have to.
Sometimes all you need is something small to wake up your tastebuds.
An almond croissant can open up a whole new world.
You love cooking. Donât forget to stay on top of cleaning while you cook because having a messy kitchen can trigger a food rut.
Make it easier and ask for help in the kitchen. Put your boys to work!
DO NOT FORGET TO PLAY. Experimenting and trying new things allows for magic to happen and you love magic!
And if youâre still feeling unsure about what you like to eat refer to:
20 Simple Weeknight Dinner Ideas
If you want to shake up the dinner rotation.
 Whole 30 Meal ideas
if youâre wanting to do some cleaner eating but also need some good ideas for satisfying dinners.
Healthy Recipes to Give Your Body a Good Reset
Get back on track with your eating.
Creating Healthy Eating Habits
Refer to the good habits you have made!
You have at least three meals a day to try to be inspired by what you eat. Shake it up!
But also know that sometimes itâs OK to eat the same thing for a while. Sometimes we donât have the energy to put into food.
Ruts arenât permanent and they donât change unless you do.
Iâm rooting for you!
xo
Tracy
