Ohhh!! Hey! i love getting to talk ttrpg stuff thanks for the question!

MASKS: A New Generation is a superhero ttrpg about teenagers all trying to figure out who they are in a world filled with people constantly telling them who they are and how the world works. It's less about the powers and the fights and more about the emotional journey of the PCs with mechanics that support that. It's a really narratively driven game!

tldr: try it out! it's fun! it's simple! and it's low-prep (apparently, just not for me, but i'm always just gonna do Too Much). you want a system with mechanics that revolve around telling a story? around your character's emotions and how they view themselves? this is the one for you! it's great and i've really been enjoying it!!

First of all, it's a fail-forward system, so the way your character levels (advanced) is by missing rolls. I like this a lot.

There are ten core playbooks that are essentially the classes you can choose from. They each come with their own powers, some intentionally more impressive than others, but it's not about the powers; it's about the core conflict that comes with each of the archetypes. Here are a few playbook examples:

The Delinquent: You've got these cool powers. But everyone keeps telling you how to use 'em. You know what they need? Someone to give them trouble, to make sure they don't always get their way. And hey! You're the perfect her to do it.

The Legacy: You're the latest in a storied heroic lineage, a family that shares a name and a cause. Now, everybody is watching and waiting to see if you've got what it takes to uphold that tradition. No Pressure, right?

The Nova: You're a font of power. Channel it, and you can remake the world into exactly what you want. Unleash it, and you can do miracles. It's wonderful... and terrifying. Lose control for even a second, and other people get hurt.

Your stats are your Labels. They're how you see yourself, and how others see you. The Labels are DANGER, FREAK, SAVIOR, SUPERIOR, and MUNDANE. Different stats help with different Moves/rolls, so for example a high DANGER stat helps you Directly Engage a Threat, while a low MUNDANE stat makes it harder for you to Comfort or Support Someone. Your Labels are constantly being shifted around throughout the game as your character's self-image changes (and that self-image changes a lot, basically the NPCs are just label shifting machines).

The mechanics are fun! Instead of traditional damage, the PCs have Conditions that they take on, and what conditions a character has affects their rolls. The Conditions are Afraid, Angry, Guilty, Hopeless, and Insecure. So if you're Angry you take -2 on your roll to do the move Comfort or Support Someone, if you're Afraid, it's -2 on Directly Engage a Threat, etc. There are multiple ways to clear your conditions but the most straightforward way is to take a particular action, so if you're Angry you have to hurt someone or break something important, and if you're Afraid you have to run from something difficult. These actions lead to some awesome and surprising story beats!

There's some other stuff as well, but that's the gist!

Coming from DND, it took me some time to adjust to something so wildly different in terms of the system, but I've been enjoying it! I haven't gotten to play it as a PC, but running it has been an interesting challenge. I think it's a pretty simple system to work with, and I at least hear it's low-prep (again not for me tho lol). It's mechanically looser than the only other ttrpg I've played (dnd) and requires a lot more decision making from the whole table, so I think in a way it asks more of its players in that way. And the GM role is constantly on in a specific way, because it's up to the GM to listen and call out when a Move is being triggered and a roll should be made based on what the characters are doing in any particular scene.

anyway I can always have more to say but MASKS has been fun. I recommend giving it a shot! And then you should tell me what you thought about it!!

I’m not kidding they really are saying somewhere out there that Kripke couldn’t possibly understand what it means to be blue collar because to do that, you’d have to have read about the value of a linen coat (which is not directly related to any of this btw) from Marx’s Das Kapital. Kripke of course couldn’t possibly have read it, and if you haven’t read it, you can’t possibly understand anything about class. I was reading back through caged lungs and I realized just how many times Donnie got hit in the head during the last fight and how hard, no wonder Leo is concerned about brain damage.

Also, when Donnie goes to see April at the end of chapter 2, is he just dissociating really hard or is that an actual physical symptom from the…everything really!

not to mention the oxygen deprivation with raph throttling him! the last fight is so visceral and nasty and it was the final nail in the coffin when it came to donnie's issues physically and mentally, because although he would have been terrified of them regardless i dont think it wouldve been "inconsolable screaming heap at the sound of raph's voice" like it was in the early bit of CW.

and id mark that as dissociation personally. the second he registered as being in relative safety he kind of shut down because he wasn't able to process it, which had kind of been a running coping mechanism through the last month or so of CL. MIND YOU: IT IS NOT HELPED ALONG BY THE BRAIN FOG CAUSED BY HIS TIME IN ISOLATION, its a nasty concoction of problems. and also yeah physical exhaustion definitely doesnt help! he ran all the way to april's apartment while actively starving, after all.

although itll get better after [REDACTED PLOT THREAD] is handled, i think dissociation is gonna be something donnie will be dealing with for years, because spending four days in a quiet, enclosed dark space has some extremely messed up consequences for your brain and body. it was also in general something he used to cope under the abuse, so i could see him having issues with it when he's not in his right mind (sick or sleep-deprived, for example), i could see him regressing back to that old mindset when something like that happens. his perception of reality is permanently a little fucked :(

i love your fics and the ideas you describe for the ask games. i'm especially fond of your takes on the rarer pairings and i always smile when i see your posts in the ship tags <3

and don't stress too much about not posting anything, real life is important and participating in fandom should be fun, not something you have to force yourself to do. god knows fandom burnout is real, especially if you feel like people are expecting something from you. just keep doing what makes you happy :)

that's very reassuring, thank you <3 i've loved everything i posted here so far and have not felt pushed to post anything i haven't enjoyed, but sometimes i forget i can like. use this blog for whatever i want and not *just* headcanons/fics/mets/etc lol. and i also forget i don't have to rush myself. it's annoying to want to write and either not have time or not have the words work. i used to run a fandom blog in my teens that got very large and felt like a chore and i was so stressed about the need to perform and the numbers and all of that. like if a fic didn't do well i saw it as a personal failing and forced myself to write popular headcanons just for the numbers game. was not fun or sustainable in the long run and i think it contributed to me no longer having any taste for the ship i primarily wrote for. so for too long i treated existing in fandom like a job lol. i've mostly gotten it through to myself that this is a space for me, but i occasionally forget when i'm so caught up in all the things i want to get to for this blog. my to-write list is a mile long and i need to be bonked with a paper towel roll, i think. so it's very kind of you to say this bc the reminder is nice <3

Dawn currently doesn't play Minecraft, but he'd be willing to try and learn if someone introduced him to it. He didn't grow up with technology of any kind except for a TV, but even that was only for a few years. So he just hasn't been exposed to it yet, but I have a feeling with how many gamers there are in Shadow Company that he won't be oblivious for long

Mori has just never been a video game person, he's heard of it but never actually played. I also think he'd play, but only if someone like Pixel asked him to. He'd probably suck initially but I think he'd get the hang of it pretty quickly, he's always been a quick learner when he wants to be

Jack has played it HAGDH, he doesn't play it a lot but he does occasionally. He's abhorrent at building, please do not ask him to build a house... You're going to have a 4x4 wooden cube with a singular glass window and a door ☹️ He's pretty decent at scavenging for stuff though. He hasn't once done a serious play through, nor beat the ender dragon, but if you ask him to get something in the game, he'll get it to you in record speeds

When Jeongguk was a baby he was fussy... round and moody and difficult. 

As a kid, he was closer to his mom than his dad. Both his parents worked– his dad just worked more. But still, like most little boys, he wanted to grow up to be just like his dad. His mom always reassured him with a fond smile. Told him not to worry, that he was just like his father. 

Jeongguk would steal grapes when he went grocery shopping with his mom. It was his favorite thing to do when he was little because he thought it was funny when she would try not to laugh while scolding him. 

Jeongguk had always been quiet, very independent for a child but his mom was his best friend back then.

That is until his favorite color began to switch between blue and red. All because the kid down that street that he would play with, Jimin, couldn’t make up his mind. Jimin said he and Jeongguk had to have the same favorite color because they had to have at least something in common if they were going to be friends. Since Jimin liked playing ‘superheroes’ and he preferred to color. 

he was in his head a lot, daydreamed too much during class according to his teachers. his best subject in school was always art, though. he tried his best on all his art projects. he was a hard worker when he wanted to be. just like your dad, his mother would say. 

something he worked especially hard towards was being the student that was allowed to design the middle school yearbook cover. he got to and he wanted to tell his mom about it but never ended up doing so because that was around the time his parents started fighting.

he didn’t think the fights were too serious though. since his dad always said sorry for whatever it was that he had done, and since his mom always, always forgave him. 

when he was 16, his parents got divorced. his mom moved out and she didn’t take him with her. he wondered why she didn’t; if it was because he was just like his dad.   

it was bad at first, but when he turned 17 it got a little easier because that was when he discovered what it felt like to love and be loved. When he figured out a person could fix and soothe.

Things were good. And for a solid year or two, he convinced himself he could live off her forever, get lost in the way it felt to love and be loved by her. Made himself believe that getting lost in her and losing himself in her were two different things. 

When she broke his heart, it hurt. Of course, it did. But Jeongguk wasn’t traumatized. If anything he felt enlightened in a sick way. Like something clicked and he understood that it wasn’t her that he could live off of. 

It was the feeling that she gave him.

So yeah, her breaking his heart didn’t ruin him; but it definitely changed him.

It changed his perspective and the way he perceived things. Just like how finding out the reason behind his parents' divorce was his dad cheating, did. 

Jeongguk had always wanted to be just like his dad.

i hate being a low empathy autistic because i never have the correct response for emotional situations. i can't feel the pain that others feel, and i can't "put myself in their shoes" to understand. and it's not that i don't understand sadness, because i do - i understand it greatly, i just struggle with the empathetic part of it. so when i'm approached with others' emotions and they expect me to sympathize with them, i look like a sociopath because i can't, and i can't fake it either. but then i don't show them the correct response - the one they're looking for; the empathy that they seek - and then they get frustrated with me, and it hurts, because i don't want to hurt them just because i don't understand them. it would be easier, sometimes i think, to be a sociopath.

Rosie rubbed her hands together for a moment, like Uncle Sherly did when he was excited, before realizing even that faint rasping might give her away. She was good at being sneaky; she'd picked Mr. Lestrade's pocket two days ago, and Uncle Sherly had beamed at her so proudly, she'd felt warm from head to foot. But catching her father off-guard was another matter entirely.

Sometimes Dad wouldn't notice her until she had an arm around his neck and she was kissing his cheek and taking peppermints out of his jacket pocket—and sometimes he'd say, "Put the knife back, Rosie," without looking up from his laptop, and before she'd even finished wrapping her fingers around the handle.

Now the sweet, rich smell of warm chocolate cake reached her nose, and she crouched lower on the stairs, ready to spring.
