Our House is Unsafe, Help Us Gain a New Start
Do NOT tag as #d*nation, #m*tual aid, #p*ypal, #c*shapp, etc.
My name is Ross and I'm the oldest child of my family, with whom I currently live with. Our household consists of me, my widowed mother, and my three younger siblings, the youngest being 16. My dad died suddenly in his sleep November of 2021 and since then we have struggled pretty much every day to keep ourselves alive and housed.
Our house, my childhood home, is a 3 bedroom mobile home built in 1990 and for as long as I can remember, it has always been hoarded and falling apart. Over the past few years, we've made significant progress in reducing the hoard and giving us space to live in, but still this is a 30+ year mobile home that is damaged beyond our capability to repair.
Problems that exist currently in our house include:
No working HVAC
Half of the house has no power
Weakened floors due to water and pet damage
Outdoor siding rotting due to plant growth and water damage
Major leaks in the covered porch's roof, causing immense water damage and mold growth
Drywall, ceiling, and flooring damage (our entire kitchen's floor is just plywood now due to damage)
So many other issues that I've honestly lost track
We, of course, originally planned to slowly fix whatever issues had come up, but our plans changed when we came across a deal to purchase a brand new 5 bedroom mobile home for a discounted price. Not only does a new house such as this give us a safe, secure, and clean place to live, but the additional rooms ensure that all of us have our own bedroom and that we have more space to live and work. Currently, me, my mom, and my sister all share the master bedroom, so obviously the concept of all of us having our own privacy is leading us to make this decision more.
Right now, we currently have $2,000 put towards the down payment for the new house, out of a $9,000 down payment. We are able to make payments early and we expected to be able to put money down every month, until my mom's job fucked her over and didn't schedule her for 6 weeks. This greatly put us behind not just on payments for the new house, but also bills and getting my mom's car insured and registered, as it's now a year overdue for both.
I'll do anything for this chance, anything if it means that my family and I can finally have a home we deserve, a home my dad would've wanted for us.
I'm desperate, we're all desperate, for a chance to live normally for the first time in our lives. Living in squalor is all I've known and the opportunity to escape it is honestly the only thing keeping me going right now.
I don't know what I'd do if I'm forced to live in this shithole another year, let alone for the rest of my life. So, please, if you have the means I'd forever be grateful if you donate. If you can't donate, then please share this. It would mean everything to me.

'can't do anything' disorder log, day 11,101:
can't focus on watching figure skating competition. keep pausing to scroll aimlessly on my phone, or compulsively respond to strangers comments on a youtube video
ate once hours ago. teeth have really been acting up the last few days, hurt all the time. I have headaches every day. maybe someday I will go to a dentist.
noticed growth in the potential set of tumors on my breast. don't know if they're actually tumors. last time I went to a doctor he made me cry because he wouldn't examine my broken knee because it happened almost two years ago but I didn't make my follow up appointment back then because I fell into a fugue state after my psych randomly retired so i lost access to medication for 'can't do anything' disorder which caused my entire life to blow up in a really messy public way, which caused me to lose my job and my insurance, and put me in serious legal trouble! which I'm still currently in.
he said the "insurance wouldn't pay for an mri" anymore since i broke it so long ago. i still don't exactly know what broke. he also wouldn't refill my adhd medication because I said I smoked weed occasionally. I stopped smoking for 6 weeks but my appointment got cancelled when i went back because 'cant do anything' disorder made me 10 minutes late. I didn't go to any of the referrals he made because the emotional trauma kept me from motivating myself over the barriers in the way of me ever leaving the house. also, I never got the referral for the growths on my skin. that are growing.
started spotting again because I'm 5 months overdue on getting my iud removed and replaced. the memory of the unmedicated pain i was in getting it put in 7 years ago is the barrier keeping me from overcoming all the other barriers this time. If I start having my period again, I'm afraid I'm gonna start experiencing serious dysphoria. also my cramps used to be pretty debilitating.
i barely shower. my hair is unmanageable due to a few really bad improvised haircuts and the fact that I'm laying down nearly 100% of the time. i can't do basic chores. the house is a mess like always, and has a million expensive problems going unresolved. my dad has just as many problems as me so they're not getting fixed very quickly. but he did get the roof repaired finally, after two years of it leaking water into my room, causing allergenic mold to grow in the walls. I can't sleep in there anymore, and everywhere else is full of junk. I sleep on the couch. It's not doing good things for my hips and back.
Living here instead of sleeping on the floor in the living room of my sister's one bedroom apartment and hiding from maintenance everytime they come in because that building's roof is also leaking and keeps spilling buckets of water all over her stuff everytime it rains means I get to be with my cat though, and that makes me really happy. my relationship with my sister is very much on the rocks now though.
my personality sucks, I'm angry all the time, I'm realizing my lack of control over myself and constantly being in a reactive state (that's gotten much worse over the years) has ruined almost every single relationship I have, and like actually traumatized people who loved me. I don't know how to stop. therapy scares me, I used to do it a lot but it's so fucking flawed and last time I went to try a new person it put me in such a panic I didn't go back. I don't know how to get better. Every path seems too hard and I have gotten to a point where I don't believe in myself enough to try literally anything, so I'm rotting away on my dad's couch, doing nothing but being a drain on finances and making everyone's lives around me worse.
I know (finally) that if I actually manage to kill myself (this time) it wouldn't actually make anyone's lives better, they would all be traumatized instead and like even if it did provide relief to some extent it wouldn't outweigh the pain. but being alive and useless and mean and spiteful also isn't like a postive force, so. I guess I have to figure out how to stop sucking and figure out how to do something. to be a positive force in the lives of the people I love? that's way more challenging than fantasizing about killing myself though. probably way more rewarding too.
i hope i figure it out.
#long post#personal#like really really personal#y'all can read it tho if you want i mean im posting it i guess#i never talk about this stuff in so much detail so#suicide mention#anyway#this started because i couldn't focus on watching this damn figure skating broadcast oml#literally shaking with hunger lol but I can't stop typing tags#do doctors make housecalls anymore. i need a dentist who makes house calls

Seriously ready to bash my head thru the goddamn wall. Live in a department of housing property (and have just been given a significant increase in the rent), been in this house for 6 years now and it’s just been an awful hell hole the entire time. So much has gone wrong, there are so many issues with the house.
Like our oven had been broken for months, the stove was fine, but the oven just wouldn’t stay hot, and we were just waiting and waiting for them to fix it, and they finally replaced it a few day ago and it seemed to be working great. But it’s Christmas Eve tonight and we started cooking the roasts for dinner, and the oven went out. We tried relighting it, but the gas wasn’t working, at all. A tiny amount would come out, but neither the oven or the stove would light. Now we don’t have a working oven OR stove. We were halfway through cooking Christmas Eve dinner! My sister had to rush out and buy a bench top air fryer oven thing that cost her over $130!
So we did manage to find a solution to cooking, but who fucking knows when maintenance is gonna show up to fix the damn thing.
But then I went to get something from my room and saw a weird puddle on the floor outside my door. For a second, I thought maybe the rabbit had peed on the floor, but then I looked up and realised the goddamn roof was leaking in the rain! There’s been this huge crack in the ceiling for months now, but obvi maintenance hasn’t done anything about it or sent anyone to check it out. And that leak is gonna get so much worse, because it’s supposed to storm all tonight and tomorrow and it’s barely even started yet.
Called maintenance about the leak, but it’s 11pm on Christmas Eve, so of course no one is coming.
I just can’t with this shit any more. There are SO MANY issues with this house, this doesn’t even come close to scratching the surface. We waited over two weeks for them to fix the shower after they took the base out. The house has so many cracks and so much mould, there’s no insulation, the carpet is disgusting and hasn’t been replaced, properly ever since the place was built in the ‘70s. There’s so many other things, and it takes so long to get anything fixed. Apparently the place was SO BAD when the previous residents moved out that they thought it would be condemned. And maintenance don’t fix shit after move outs, they just do patch jobs to make it look nice for the next people.
I just don’t know how much longer I can deal with this. They’ve recently raised the rent by over $200 a fortnight and the whole place is just fucked. I can’t afford to go into private rental, and even if I could, the market is well and truly fucked and it’s genuinely impossible to find a place and get accepted because we’re in the middle of a huge housing crisis
I know no one probably gonna read this, and no one gives a shit, but I just needed to rant, because this is fucked.
#personal#housing#will probs delete later#I’ve saged the whole house coz I swear this place must be cursed

5 Mistakes To Avoid As a First Time Home Buyer
youtube
Edwin Liddie here with the Liddie Real Estate group brokered by JP and Associate Realtors. Our office is located in Southlake, but we service the entire DFW Metroplex including Dallas, Fort Worth, and everything in between. We help people buy and sell real estate all the way up to luxury homes.
If it is for sale and it’s a house, we can help. Today this video is going to cover five mistakes to avoid as a first-time home buyer with a possible six as a bonus.
1. Avoid doing it yourself.
You want to get a real estate agent to help you and it's not going to cost you anything. Stop scrolling through Zillow, Trulia, and Realtor.com. Pick up the phone and call me 682-302-5131, I am here to help! I am a buyer's agent and specialize in it. My wife and I love to help people find real estate.
I know the market better than you do; It’s what I am trained to do. I have access to the MLS, which is the service that gives me all the homes in the system that are available for sale by other people who are represented by agents.
I'm able to pull comps. I'm able to see whether or not the house you’re interested in is worth what they are asking. Why? Because we may want to put an offer in that's lower or maybe higher, depending upon what the sales price is. It also depends on how nice the house is, its location, and if it fits your budget. I draft the contract and negotiate on your behalf to get terms that are favorable for you. I take the stress out of the process and I help make the transaction a whole lot smoother. Once we close on the deal, I get paid from the person selling the house. They are going to pay my broker who pays me.
So why wouldn't you use an agent? Right? You want to use an agent. You want to use me.
Call me, let me help you like I’ve helped so many people throughout DFW. We have a team of people that can help you find the home you need and want while making the process easy.
2. Get pre-approved!
You do not want to start looking at houses unless you know how much house you could afford. There are two types of people that I typically meet. One would say, "Yeah I want to buy a house” and then I say, “Ok what is your price range?”, and they would say, "Well I don't want to spend any more than $300,000” and I look at them and say wow, okay, you know what you want!
Then there is a second type of person that I ask "Well what are you looking for? And they say, "Well I don't want to spend any more than $1500 a month”
It's two different ways of looking at it, right?
One doesn't want to spend more than $300,000 but they have no idea what a $300,000 monthly note is. The other one knows that their budget is $1500 bucks and it doesn't matter if it is a $300,000 house because they can afford to spend $1500 a month.
That's really what you should be geared to. How much can you afford each month? The only way to find that out is to get pre-approved. Now, if you have a bank that you absolutely love and have been banking with them for a long time with great credit, go for it! Call them up, tell them, "Hey I'm in the market, and thinking about buying a house and I just want to know based on my current situation, how much home can I afford? And the lenders, they are trained to go through your finances and let you know how much of a house you can or can’t afford.
Let's work on your credit. If you don't have a lender or bank with someone but are not really happy with them, I have access to plenty of lenders who specialize in mortgages. I have great relationships with a lot of lenders who have great programs!
There's a lot of programs our there that you may qualify for, but you wouldn't know unless you talk to the right people. A lot of times it’s about who you know and what that person knows. That's why you want to get pre-approved. You may see something online and say, “I love this house!” but you just can't afford it.
Furthermore, even if you were to call me and say you love a particular house, I really can't show you the house unless I have a pre-approval. Because, I can be challenged by the realtor or the broker that owns that house as to whether or not you're in a position to buy. So, it's best for you to get pre-approved. If you are not pre-approved, you can call me and I can help you get with the right people to do so!
3. Don’t buy a foreclosure.
Number three, this is a big one! A few years ago, we went through a recession and a lot of people lost their homes to foreclosures. Foreclosures were a big thing as well as short sales. That was a long time ago!
But the mindset of many is that “Hey, you know what I’m going to buy a house.” “The first house I’ll buy is a foreclosure because I can get a great deal on a foreclosure or a short sale.” I have to tell you that in 2019, things have changed.
First off, there aren't as many foreclosures and short sales as there was back when the recession hit. Nowadays, banks have gotten hip. Even if they foreclose on your house, they will ask for what the house is worth. So the chances of you finding something that's a great investment for you to get pennies on the dollar, is very slim. Furthermore, if it does exist, cash investors are looking for those same deals in this saturated market.
The odds of you finding a great deal at a certain price with great value and little renovation doesn't exist. You have to look at it like this, if you're a first-time homebuyer with limited funds; you don't have tens of thousands of dollars lying there to renovate your home after purchasing it, don’t think about a foreclosure. A lot of those homes, if you find one, need so much work!
The thought of “Well, you know, I'm going to live in this room. We’ll fix this room up. We're going to take our time.” That's a fantasy land. Now a days you don’t even know what's wrong with the house. You may get into a house and barely get in and you're like, “I love this home” but have to put so much money into the house that is just not worth the investment at the end of the day.
So, I would advise you stay away from it. If it's your very first home, I can help. Unless you’re a contractor or have an unlimited amount of money. But I'm going to advise you to find something that's worth just moving into that takes minimal amount of work for you to furnish.
4. Get an Inspection.
All right, so we found the house and we got you pre-approved. It's not a foreclosure or short sell. At this point we need to get an inspection done. I advise all my clients, that are not buying a new home, to get an inspection done.
An inspection, depending on the size of the home, costs anywhere between $300 and $500. The inspectors are licensed by the state of Texas and they do a thorough inspection of the entire house from top to bottom. When they are finished, they give you a list of everything that's wrong with the house, or everything that checked out ok.
This is critical because if we are buying a pre-existing home, I’m able to use that list to negotiate repairs or credit or reduction in the sales price to offset whatever needs to be done. Not only that, it is imperative that you know what is going on with the house that you're getting ready to buy as an investment, for you and your family live in.
You need to know what's up with it! You need to know if the roof is going to last before the next rainfall. You need to know if the foundation is going to live up to holding the weight of the house, and the house isn’t going to crack in two. You need to know if there's mold in the house. You need to know if the pipes are any good, or if there are any leaks in the bathroom, sink, etc. You need to know if the AC is functional year around, especially in Texas!
All of these things are covered under a good inspection. You need a good inspection company that knows what they're doing. And again, if you don't know any, I know a plethora of companies that are really good at what they do. I could advise you to get with one of them and we'll get this inspection done. It gives you peace of mind, but it's critical you have to get it done. Not getting it done is a big mistake.
5. Do Not Change Jobs!
I've seen this happen. Most of the time that this has happened, both the realtor and lender didn't do a good job of telling their clients that, if you're going to buy a home and your under-contract or thinking about getting a mortgage, do not change your job until you actually move into the house! Changing your job can push the date back or it may put you in a situation where you no longer qualify for a mortgage, even though you've got great credit. The banks are looking at your income, consistent cashflow, and how long you have worked on your current job.
You will be surprised! There is a plethora of people under contract to buy a house. Everything is going well and they take a job offer or apply for another job. They take that job and then receive a phone call from the underwriter saying “We will not fund this loan. You need to be on this job for three months, six months or etc.”
Certain banks have different criteria. If you're serious about buying a house, stay on your job until you get into your house. If you are in a situation where you are getting ready to switch jobs, wait to buy a home until you've been on that job for a certain amount of time. Lenders are better suited to help you with this. I've got lenders that you can talk to. Just let me know what the situation is, and I'll put you in touch with a lender. They'll tell you exactly what to do. Whatever you do don’t change jobs!
6. Bonus!
This is a bonus. Not buying a home, especially as a millennial is one of the biggest mistakes you can make. That sounds crazy but let me tell you why. If you're paying rent, you are paying someone else's mortgage. So, for everyone that says, "I don't want to mortgage right now.” I'm going to ask you “Where do you live and you're going to say “Well... I live (blank)” “Do you pay rent? “Yes, I pay rent.” “Then you're paying someone’s mortgage.” It's not your own but you're paying somebody's mortgage. So why not get your own mortgage? Getting your own mortgage is like having a giant piggybank. You’re paying yourself back over time. Not to mention the property is going to gain equity. The value of your property will increase and the difference between what you owe and what it’s worth is your money.
That's your equity, it belongs to you. You can actually take a loan against that if need be.
However, if your renting, you can’t do it. There is nothing wrong with renting if you're in a situation where you have to rent, then rent. I rented for a long time, but when the time came for me to purchase, I made the move because financially it was an investment that just made sense to make a payment each month. Some of that money is going into my own piggybank, not all of it, some of it. Most goes towards interest, but some goes to what I owe. Now every time I make a payment, I owe less and less and less. Not only that, but the value of the house goes up and up and up. Worse case scenario, if I need to sell I can sell and pull money out.
It's an investment and you have to look at it from that perspective. Again, it's maybe not time for you to buy a house and that's okay. You can get in touch with me and we can come up with a time frame. I have clients right now who are a year out.
I met someone last week, she said, “I'm a year out, that's when my lease is up” but I said “We're going to start working on it now and we're going to put a game plan in place that's tailored towards your needs.” Within the next year of July she will be in a brand-new home that was built from scratch. It can be done. I've helped people do it before in the past and I'm here to help you. I am Edwin Liddie with JP and Associate Realtors.
If you have any questions, give me a call.
If you're thinking about buying a house, give me a call! If you want to sell give me a call! We are here to help. At the end of the day, we just love to help people. We are transparent, trustworthy and we are who we are.

Important Update for partners across the board
This is long, and I’m sorry, but I just wanted everyone to know what’s going on. Honestly, I’m not expecting anyone to actually waste time reading through all this, but it’s just so I can try to ease my own anxiety in case the worst case scenario does come and I left some sort of explanation.
Ok, so, some of you know there’s been a lot going on for me at home in the last 3 or 4 years. But everything’s kind of getting worse by day and at this point, I’m not sure what to do anymore.
When I was 14, I moved in with my dad. We moved quite a few times in the first few years I was with him. Hell, that first year alone, I was in 3 different schools. All for Freshman year. And the last house we were in that year, we stayed in for maybe 2?
But when I was 16, the factory my dad worked at closed and he lost his job. That’s kind of where all this starts. Instead of getting a new job, he decided he wanted to spend all day drinking with his new friends and occasionally doing odd jobs for them or things with them. We had to move out of that house, take my dog to the shelter, and move into a trailer. It was only supposed to be for a year. But nearly 14 years later, and we’re still here.
Now the landlord here is a real prick. More like a slumlord if you ask me. He jacks the rent up for the dumbest reasons and acts like he’s god’s gift to humanity or some shit. He told us himself, and had the park manager tell us, that we couldn’t fix our roof to stop the leaking because the walls would collapse of we tried to move it. So literally the entire 14 years we’ve been here, the roof has been leaking. My dad tried everything he could think of, short of tearing it out and redoing it, to fix it. Nothing worked.
And in that time, the entire back half of the house got destroyed by mold. My bedroom, being the very last room, was the first to go. I think I slept in it for a year? And ever since, I’ve had to sleep in the living room because the walls had to be torn out due to the mold. It’s right down to the studs and the scant insulation. It’s been like that for over 10 years. Well, now the mold is spreading and getting worse. The bathroom is destroyed pretty much. The back hallway is the same. The floor’s rotting away, and the toilet is falling through the floor; again.
Now, I think my dad went to the garage he was at for the first time when I was maybe 18? I don’t remember exactly. I do remember being in junior year and my friends either having to buy me lunch, share theirs with me, or pray that we actually were cooking in cooking class; which happened a lot less than you’d think. Other than that, I didn’t eat. Senior year was a little better because I at least would get money dropped off to eat. Not that the cafeteria had a lot of choices for me to pick from. I pretty much ate nothing but gross excuse for pizza and occasionally pretzels, fries, or Belgian waffles.
Anyway, so senior year rolls around and we’re all prepping for college. At the time, I wanted to go to AMDA for musical theater, and managed to get an audition there for that March. I had to force my dad to go to the meeting about FAFSA and to fill out the paperwork. Which he said he did, but I don’t believe it because he says they denied me. And I’ve never heard of FAFSA being denied. Not that it mattered anyway, because I bombed the audition and didn’t get in. So graduation rolls around and all my friends go off to college. I haven’t seen or spoken to most of them since. They never stop to visit when they come home and they never try to reach out on Facebook. Eventually, I got sick of being the one to initiate and maintain all conversations, so I just gave up.
The 2 friends I still had at that time helped me to get jobs when I was 20/21 and living with them, in 2011/2012. This was because 2 of us and their mom were in a car accident on the way to my friend’s college at the time. We all nearly died. My friend had a concussion, their mom needed surgery, and I nearly got impaled by a fake Christmas tree. I ended up going to the hospital a lot later than they did with a copy of the report in the doctor’s hand and got told I wasn’t in an accident I had the flu, go home. Anyway, so after my friend’s mom’s surgery, I moved in to help around the house and look after my friend’s youngest sister. These jobs weren’t the best; Wendy’s and the deli department of one of the local grocery stores. But it was money.
For all the good it did. Because by that time, my dad had quit working at the garage. So here I was, paying for rent, bills, gas, food, and child support for my brother. All on $200 a week. My anxiety was driving me insane. And I came to find out that my dad was going in and threatening one of the store managers, which was probably why the guy was such a scumbag to me. But I digress. So I was in the store for a month shy of 2 years. I started at maybe $7.45 or $7.50. an hour when I started. It was slightly over the minimum wage at the time. By the time I left, 2 years later mind you, I wasn’t even making $8, and I was working full time hours while only being part time. Everything that went wrong got blamed on me, even when it was my day off and I wasn’t anywhere near the store. I liked most of the people that I worked with, even if I hated the job, and the assistant department manager became a really good friend. She was 2 years older than me, and we hung out a lot. I’d spend the night at her house, I was at her wedding, I’ve been to her daughter’s birthday parties and so on.
At one point, I was supposed to get training to be an assistant specialty cheese shop lead. They sent me to one class, told me about another, but never gave me any more details about it, even when I asked. Then they said they were going to train me over there, but never did. That was just the first of a long list of grievances. The culmination of which was on a Sunday night, our busiest day of the week. There was just me and 1 other guy in the department. Then 1 lady in the hot food section, 1 lady in the beer store, and no one in the bakery. But they expected me to take care of all 4 departments and still wait on the 20+ people that were at the counter the whole night. And I had an order to make and put away for the assistant department manager. Needless to said, I had a panic attack. I told my partner, and both of the other people nearby. They told the assistant store manager, and he didn’t care. They made me work for 3 and a half hours, through a panic attack, without a break. I couldn’t breathe and was on the verge of fainting. I finally had enough and told one of the ladies that I didn’t care what the store manager said, I was going to get my inhaler in the break room and get a drink at the water fountain, or I was going to faint.
A few days later, I got called to the main office to speak to the store manager, who I usually didn’t have a problem with. And unfortunately, since my anger receptors are evidently attached to my tear ducts, I broke down in tears when I wanted to be furious. He basically told me that I was going to the bakery or I was getting fired. So the next day, I quit. There was a lot of other stuff too but that doesn’t really matter. Including being so sick that I couldn’t eat for over a week, fainting in the back room because they wouldn’t let me take a day off, and not being able to talk for over a month. The assistant department manager almost called the ambulance when I fainted, but you know, I’m clearly the problem here.
So there we were, I didn’t have a job. My dad didn’t have a job. I was 23, and feeling just as helpless as I did at 16. I spent a year filling out job applications for a bunch of different things from craft stores to fast food to jewelry stores, but never heard back from any of them. The only interview I got was for Chipotle. But they wouldn’t even hire me. Naturally, cue the anxiety and depression getting worse. And around this time, our electric got shut off. This was in May I believe because it was just before my birthday.
At that time I started thinking about going back to school. So I looked at schools and degrees you could do all online, because I knew I could never afford to go on campus. And, as most of you know, I started at CTU in July of that year. Now the program I did was an accelerated one, which meant I could finish gen ed classes faster, be done faster, and lower my tuition. I did as many as I could, but only my admission adviser was any help. My actual student adviser was never around, never responded to my emails, never called me back. But whatever.
So for 3 years I spent pretty much all day, every god damn day doing schoolwork. I’d be at my local Dunkin from 3 in the afternoon until they closed at 11. Sometimes I’d be working even later next door because I still had stuff to do. The first year and a half I was fine. It didn’t bother mine, just like working didn’t bother me at first. But then, a year and a half after I started, I got sick. I couldn’t eat anything without my stomach cramping up and getting the worst migraines. It got so bad that one day at Dunkin, I felt like I was going to puke, and got up to go to the bathroom and almost fainted. Personally, I think it’s a combination of anxiety, depression, Celiac/gluten intolerance, anemia, and asthma. But I don’t know for sure because I haven’t had a doctor since I was going to the pediatrician. And even if I did, can’t afford it.
So I’ve just been getting sicker and sicker. I was 125 pounds in January of this year. 11 months later, and I’m down to 108.5 the last time I checked. I think the lowest I hit was 107, and that was all 6 months after the weight loss started. There’s times it’ll go back up, but I can’t get past 110 or 111 tops. Neighbors who used to live down the road came to visit earlier this week, and all the lady could say was how skinny I got. I’m like yeah, malnourishment’ll do that to you.
And to make things worse, my dad at some point went back to the garage and was working again, so things were slightly better. I say slightly in the loosest way possible. But, just after Christmas last year, my dad quit again. I’ve seen him apply to 1 job and go to 1 interview in the year since. Other than that, he’s been collecting scrap and doing shit for people who refuse to pay, including the landlord. In the last 7 or 8 months, despite how many times I’ve told him that my refund checks from the school aren’t free money I can spend however I want, my dad’s made me spend it. The $5,000 I had that was supposed to set me ahead for my student loans are gone. And I’m $5,000 deeper in the hole than I should be. Which means instead of being like $45 or 50 grand in debt I’m about $55 grand.
Then, because we haven’t had electricity in almost 4 years, and with the mold problem, everything in the house is ruined. We had only cold water, and I took cold showers for as long as I could. But last winter, the shower pipes froze and burst. So even if I wanted to, I can’t do that. Plus, because we can’t use the washer and dryer, or hook up a generator thanks to the scumbag landlord, or afford a laundromat, our clothes have gone unwashed for over a year. Most of mine were sitting in the tub, which got filled with mold and bugs. I have practically no clothes left, with no way to wash them, and no way to shower unless I go to someone else’s house. And even when I do, I still don’t feel clean. Even after washing my hair 4 times or more.
We were supposed to move into the place next door and tear this one down. But the landlord and my dad made a deal that he’d give it to us for the cost of the title transfer. Then suddenly, he wanted $600, then like $800 or $1,000. But he won’t stop asking about it, no matter how many times we tell him no. Him and his wife keep trying to say we’re $5,000 behind on rent which isn’t possible because with what rent is now, you can’t even get $5,000 as a total for a whole year, and this last year is the only time we fell behind because everything else was caught up. He gave us a bill full or errors. Payments that were made aren’t marked. Payments that weren’t made are. There’s random charges after the monthly rent cycle. Which I think are from when he was bitching about us paying the taxes for a place we didn’t even own and was still in his name. He told us we can’t run the generator for power because it was too loud. Though the noise ordinance here is 11, and it was always off by then. And when one of the neighbors asked how we were supposed to live, he told them it “Wasn’t his problem”.
So when I started getting really sick, and unable to leave the house to go to Dunkin for school because I was too gross, the neighbors next door let us run an extension cord over to their place. Not a lot. Just enough for the light in the living room, the fan, a mini fridge, and to plug in my phone and computer. OH WANNA HEAR A GOOD ONE. THE LANDLORD TOLD MY DAD 3 SEPARATE TIMES IF I NEED TO PLUG IN MY COMPUTER TO GET A LANTERN. YES THE OLD FASHIONED OIL OR CANDLE TYPE LANTERN. WHICH YOU CAN TOTALLY PLUG AN ELECTRONIC COMPUTER INTO. So because of that, I was able to finish school and graduate in June.
But, because I still can’t bathe or do laundry and have no clothes, I still can’t go to interviews. If I walked in with my arms, face, neck, and legs literally black from dirt, and reeking to high heaven, I’d fucking get laughed out of the place. My dad still refuses to get a real job and insists on hauling scrap or doing shit for people who won’t pay at all, or want to pay less than it’s worth. And guess what’s due this week? You got it, my first loan payment.
I can’t figure out how much I have to pay, work on getting it lowered or delayed, or even access my account info because there’s an issue with my birthday apparently, and they can’t find it even though they have my name and social and keep emailing me. I’ve been telling him this for months, and he still won’t come with me to try and sort it out. Because what he needs has to taken care of then and there and everything else can fuck all. He blew up at me the other day about it, blaming me for going, leaving him with payments, for my mother walking out 20 years ago even though they hated each other, and pretty much for being born. Because he resents having to take care of kids he made the choice to have. Not like I asked to be born, and I’ve been wishing I was dead since I was 9, but whatever.
Anyway.
So, the neighbor’s dad was diagnosed with lung cancer over the summer. Like 2 weeks later, he was dead. And she’s struggling just as much. We’ve been trying to help her and she’s been trying to help us. But her ex was paying her rent and some of the other bills until she found a job because they have a young son. But he started refusing to do that, which I honestly wouldn’t be surprised it if was the landlord’s doing cause they were talking. And he was telling her to “pull the plug” on us. And his wife started harassing her about rent like 2 weeks after her father died. Then, she went to Domestic relations earlier this week and then like the day after she goes, her ex somehow gets an emergency custody on the little guy. They came for him yesterday.
She’s most likely going to have to move, which means that we’ll be losing power and internet unless we can figure something out to get our power back on. But even then, the bill’s supposedly at least $1300, and that won’t fix the internet problem.
So... Needless to say, if I disappear suddenly in the near future, that’s why. I don’t want to go. I’ve spent too much time here, made too many friends, and put too much work into my muses. But everything is going to shit all at once. It’s just been building and building for the last 3 years, especially the last year, but my dad refuses to see and do anything about it. Instead, he’d rather blame everything on me and expect me to fix it. As if my mental health wasn’t bad enough from childhood abuse and being sick and stressed all the time. Now I’m too fucking scared to leave the house. I haven’t been outside since the midterms when I went to vote. But I honestly don’t know what’s going to happen now. And I just wanted everyone to know that I love them. And even if I do disappear, I still plan on keeping my muses and coming back when I can. Granted Tumblr doesn’t die before then. In which case the only blog i’m worried about losing is Elizabeth’s because of all the worldbuilding, metas, and headcanons I’ve done.

TONY REDGRAVE
This is a ssssort of comprehensive-ish headcanon for the years between Eva’s death and DMC3 --- yes, I am using both the DMC novel (since at least a huge chunk of it is confirmed canon, which is the Best because I always loved that novel) and the DMC3 manga. Mind that this is connected to my main Vergil, @multiimuse.
“You must run. By yourself, alone. You must change your name. Forget your past and start a new life as someone else.” That was all the boy knew --- those words, and his lifeless mother, draped on the front steps of their house in a pool of blood. He’d screamed her name so many times, but she never got up. All he had as that memory, the memory of demons, and the huge sword he clutched to his chest, dragged along beside him. Eventually he almost convinced himself that the sword is what told him those things --- everything was a blur otherwise, even his name. In his daze, the ten year old saw a street sign: Red Grave City, and...maybe an old comic book, one he vaguely remembered loving, a man named Tony...something. It never really mattered. In the end the boy that found his way to another nearby city was calling himself Tony Redgrave, and he knew two things: his mother was killed by demons, and he had to get strong enough to kill them, too.
The years from ages ten to seventeen are pretty much all blurred together. He traveled, fought, got stronger. Coasted by in shelters, in alleyways, sleeping in the streets or wherever he could get a roof over his head whether it was in a gas station or a bathroom of a nightclub or some chick’s bedroom. Stole food at first til he started making money. And making money any way he could (any way) until people started noticing he was good at fighting, good at killing. (He didn’t like killing, but it’s what he had to do until he got his foot in the door.)
He killed a man for the first time when he was eleven, some creep in an alley who thought he was pretty and had a gun just in case he said no: he didn’t expect him to say no with his sword.
He started getting mercenary jobs eventually, and though he couldn’t discriminate at first, he made enough of a name for himself while traveling that the could be picky. And he was picky --- if he wasn’t feeling a job, if it didn’t seem interesting or feel...right, somehow, if there was too much wanton violence, no thanks. Other than that, if he took a job, it’d get done and done well.
Demons were on his ass constantly, nothing big, but they were always turning up. He got good at killing them, and it felt good. It felt good to be stronger than what killed Mommy.
Tony cultivated his persona --- loud, obnoxious, childish, always ready with a quip or a joke, flashy and flamboyant --- to psyche others out and to keep himself at ease. It was easy to be a joker, a jester, messing around and never taking anything seriously. It protected him. It felt right, too, like maybe part of him really was like that, or had been at one point, but a lot of it was just staged. He was lonely on the inside, desperately so, sad and thoughtful and introspective. Even so, he was childish in a lot of ways, especially his taste for sweets and his crooked smile. That wasn’t all an act, either.
He was a flirt, liked women --- went out on dates with girls that caught his interest, but quickly learned that it was something they liked to tease him about, his nightmares; girls could be cruel and vicious when their big tough mercenary date called out for his mother in his sleep. He started trying not to spend the night after sex, after a while. Easier to keep them off you if they didn’t hear it. (He liked to think he was good with women, but he knew he wasn’t.)
When he was seventeen, he rolled into a new city, the one where Bobby’s Cellar resided, and took up shop there, so to speak. His propensity for mercy and his pickiness with jobs kind of shook the entire underworld of the city, getting the mercenaries at Bobby’s into a loose guild (while making Tony a lot of enemies), and it was there he met an older man named Grue, a scruffy type with three young daughters and a recently-deceased wife. The older mercenary took Tony under his wing, as did the famous gunsmith, Nell Goldstein, who he went to with requests for guns.
Tony liked guns; he was better with a sword, but he’d picked up guns quickly and they were fun to use, but he was too hard on them, and broke them constantly. Nell yelled at him for it, but always made him new ones.
He met two agents at the time, two middlemen who took advantage of the changing atmosphere of the underworld to peddle business at Bobby’s --- Enzo and Morrison. Enzo was his main contact, Morrison handling other people, but they both did cross paths. (Enzo would retire not long after he turned nineteen, and Morrison stepped into be his new main contact; they’ve been close ever since.)
This went on for two years --- the longest Tony had ever stayed in one place, but Grue and Nell were so kind --- until a man named Gilver turned up, carrying a katana and wrapped in bandages. In the month or two that followed, an increasing amount of disaster struck, until Dante had woken, standing alone in the ashes of Tony’s life, staring at the floor where the man that must have been his twin brother had vanished.
Gilver...both was and was not Vergil. He was at first, having finally found his brother and knowing no other way to approach but combat, being supremely awkward, and unable to express his jealousy or other strange feelings towards the brother who had forgotten him, but who had a life. Yes, that victim of the drinking contest was Vergil. But so was the man who took the job for the Oz Club and killed them all after the Club put a hit on Tony. However, he was not Gilver for very long after that.
Mundus had sent a trio of demon brothers, demon monkeys named Mizaru, Kikazaru, and Iwazaru, to kill both sons of Sparda while they were in the same place. The leader, Iwazaru, set up a rift in the basement of a sanatorium, slowly leaking demons and demonic power into the city as it grew a despair tree --- this was the tree that devoured the eldest daughter of Grue, the tree Tony burnt to the ground as he killed Iwazaru --- but the other two brothers had their own jobs. Kikazaru went after Gilver, distracting and harming him and dragging him away from the city, while Mizaru took his form.
Mizaru was the Gilver that murdered Grue, hurt Nell, destroyed Bobby’s Cellar. Mizaru was the vicious Gilver, the one that slaughtered wantonly. Mizaru was the one that opened a rift in Bobby’s with the blood of the mercenaries there, the one that nearly ruthlessly slaughtered Dante. It played on the memories and appearance it received from stealing Vergil’s face, tormenting Dante with the perceived loss of his brother as the demon died.
By the time Vergil killed Kikazaru and made it back to that city, everything he’d known was in ruins and Tony...Dante was gone.
Dante fled that city after it ended, finding another city --- Gainsmouth, a city near his hometown of Red Grave --- and setting up shop there, eventually opening a storefront with money he scraped together. He was working on the name when an incident (the Alice job) occurred, leading him to cross paths again with Vergil, who had just met Arkham. Believing Vergil to have been Gilver the whole time, Dante was hurt and angry, but their reunion was short-lived. They would reunite at Temen-ni-Gru a few months later, a year after the Gilver incident.
Other Notes:
Enzo retired soon after the Alice job, and Dante met Morrison then, and formally began working with him after Temen-ni-Gru.
Because of the incident with the sanatorium, Dante has a mild phobia of hospitals in general.
Dante used the last of his savings as Tony to open up bank accounts for Grue’s other daughters, Nesty and Tiki, and a chunk of his earnings every month goes to them. He hasn’t been back to see them since he’s persona non grata in that city, but Morrison visits, and he passes on well wishes both ways.
Dante as himself is far more comfortable in his jokey and flippant persona, but it really isn’t all he is; he’s still quiet and thoughtful at times, consistently melancholy when alone, and after Mallet prone to bouts of severe depression. Coping is easier was the jokey, casual, sarcastic asshole, though, and it isn’t like it isn’t genuine, so it helps him to keep that up much of the time. He’s still somewhat less--- intense about it as Dante than he was as Tony, though. DMC3 Dante was the closest to Tony, still, with so much overlap, but he grew into something a little more mature and toned down, if still. Like That.

Bug infestation fyi.
I'm starting to get really worried...
Living here has turned into an absolute nightmare... It's nice to see the sun and to be on the top floor and have that sort of freedom and all.. but the bedbugs... I can overlook the slightly unpleasant neighbors. The thin walls. The crumbling roof (my ceiling is starting to get really bad). The leaks and places other bugs like to get in. I'm sure our neighbors do the same... But these bugs.
I didn't actually realize how tenacious and TINY they are. A female can only lay one egg a day, but in the buggy would.. that's a lot. And there only needs to be one male and explosions are imminent. Can even be from an egg she just laid, they don't have problems with inbreeding. And while a female can only mate once a day.. a male can mate with all females in his area.
So even one... One tiny, itty bitty bug that's oh so hard to see, let alone feel... Could spell disaster for an entire complex. Because those big ones I've been squashing.. yeah.. they're actually really old comparatively.. and all the new ones that have and will hatch.. smaller than a pin head. I'm only lucky enough to know that thanks to the massively gruesome display in my room rn... There are dozens.. dozens of tiny tiny, so small you wouldn't see them unless you were looking, corpses or possibly carapaces on my pad. With all the powder I've put in there they've dehydrated and ended up stopping where they were looking for food... I hope. I hope they aren't carapaces. They don't look to have moved either way.. I keep checking.. I have pictures.. but millimeters are a lot bigger to them than they are to me.... But I also keep finding more. I thought I'd just missed them initially, but I put something clean down in there a week or two ago and moved it a few days ago only to discover about 6 Tiny little dots on top of it... And a much larger, live buggy under it.
The diatomaceous earth works to a degree and I'm so grateful... But it's obviously not full proof.
....
We need to move. Because Tevie and I can't afford this place on our own...
I mean I MAY have about $200 extra by the end of the month to go towards a deposit on a new place... If our mother doesn't drop the ball on us and refuse to pay rent like she threatened... Which she can't technically legally do because she has so much of her stuff here... But may try anyway and I'm still really angry about...
But even then.. even if I DO have the extra... I can't think of a single place that will take us... Because of the risk. I don't WANT to infest a new place... I'm going insane enough as it is knowing THIS wasn't our fault....
I'm riddled with bites. RIDDLED. And I keep finding more. We even keep powdering... Tevie keeps vacuuming... I keep washing (hot water hot dryer) And the number doesn't go down. It's actually gone up. I didn't realize how bad the back of my arms were until I caught myself in the mirror today.
My legs. My feet. My back, belly, neck, shoulders, FINGERS (those ones suck). These are the ones I just happen to spot.. because they're red and puffy, but only for a maximum of 2 days before they disappear on me... And they've started itching... Due to the sheer number I may be developing the allergy.. or it's probably psychological which also isn't fun.
Who would WANT to take us in?
Even if we find someone.. which I am seriously starting to doubt... We have to get rid of so much... Tevie is distraught... Because she doesn't want to lose her bed.. or the body pillows I saved up to give her as gifts to help her sleep a few years ago... Every time I try to talk about moving she tells me to stop. To shut up... Because if we manage it.. it's going to be so hard. We're losing so much.. and we don't even HAVE that much...
I'm also worried that if we move someplace and some how manage to avoid transporting.... we're not going to be looked kindly on for sleeping/eating/spending so much time on the floor.. the couch where I'm sleeping now, the chair that goes with it, all the beds... All the pads... At least half our pillows. Blankets (especially comforters).. many clothes and our few storage thingys ( specificly ones with too small crevices).. any large/unwashable stuffed animals we still have... It all has to go. There's no way we can guarantee they'll be bug free... I'm honestly terrified I'm going to have to give up my Scooby too... My comfort blanket..
What will a landlord or property manager think when they come to check on us or if we need something repaired?
Most of the furniture we are using isn't ours anyway.. it's our mom's. Lucky me.. we've completely fallen out. There goes the kitchen stuff. Washer. Dryer.
I mean it FEELS bad enough... But for some reason people really judge hard too. We wouldn't be able to to have anyone over because of all we'll lose, and poor Tevie is even more upset because of that too. We will be lucky to have my TV and our games/stations maybe... But not right away because they will need full proof decontamination.. heavy cleaning and freezing if it won't kill them (ie any electronics).. if we can borrow a freezer or have one available to us.
I have already given Tevie my promise that no matter what, she doesn't have to sleep on the floor.. that she can have my hammock since it has made my old injury act up (mostly because I suck at sleeping correctly so I hurt myself unintentionally. Another reason I really miss having a bed.) But it makes her feel worse knowing she'll be taking it from me after I fought so hard for it (it's an old guilt thing having to deal with how she was kept in place specificly). But it's something we can clean and take with us with little danger.. I hope.
I just... UGH what do I do?
If we had.. gods.. idk.. if we had a $1000 gift even... We could manage to start over... to break our lease and throw 95% of stuff out... It would be no less painful, but we could get some cheap dressers or something brand new for storage.. air mattresses or cheap frames and pads for places to sleep.. a large freezer to salvage some clothes and blankets and anything that will survive a deep freeze, plus a place for food storage all in one.. or just a small, cheap new wardrobe if nothing else. Like $50-$75 each... Money for the cost of moving ourselves.. and a deposit, first month's rent.. just a start... Until we could start to save something. Anything.. to get whatever else we may need then want.
But then even a gift of $1000 would also devaste us rn..
Due to the reporting laws, After taxes, it would push us over the minimum income for a family of 2 per month and I'd lose my health insurance (means no meds). We could be turned away from housing due to having too much in the bank... Why are poor people not allowed to have savings anymore? Why is so much demanded up front when the reason people are going into programs is because they DON'T have it??
We could NOT report it.. and then potentially get fined for fraud...
Ugh... A lot of this is worst case scenario stuff... And I could have some things wrong here... But it's what's on my mind... And the very real possibility of living out of a car here in the near future.. if I'm even allowed to keep it. If I'm not... I lose my job, which everyone already knows... My dad will take Tevie and me in in a heartbeat.. but I can't risk infesting his or anyone he gets to help's house. He and our friends can't afford it any more than we can. None of them can.. there's already 7 of my family members living in that 3 bedroom house for Pete's sake... I'd sooner opt to throw ALL my stuff away, even the clothes on my back...
I can't tell what it's going to be yet. How far it all will go.. I just know it's going to be so incredibly difficult no matter what.
...
Slightly unrelated rant here..
Meanwhile my mom doesn't have to worry about a (crumbling) roof over her head because her bf's parents own his place from what I understand. While they may struggle like us to put food on the table here and there, she never has to fear homelessness. She has a bed, a dresser, plenty of furniture, space to be herself, support.. even a bf who wants to give her MORE of all of the above.
... She's also allowed up here with access to everything anytime (I've asked for a heads up of when she does want to be here only so I can be out of her way, but that's too disrespectful of me because she pays her portion of the rent, so she's never here)... And so is never high and dry or fearful... And so feels like it wouldn't be a terrible move to just drop this place and us altogether. To take what she wants and/or needs and leave without fear.
Tevie and I are on the brink of losing everything... And she just doesn't care. I'm still angry about that too. About her lies in caring about us.. because she clearly doesn't. She doesn't HAVE to go through this with us and has chosen not to. And I don't think there's anything I CAN do about that either. I wouldn't want to go through this either.. I mean I REALLY don't want to be going through it right now.. but I, for one, have refused to abandon my sister. My job. My pet. And my hobbies (for now).. which means keeping my clothes (work has dress code).. mandatory decent night's rests.. fighting the infestation/dealing with bites... Working on moving/losing stuff all by myself... It's exhausting.. and I'm terrified.. but I can't just run away from it... (Especially cuz I got no monies to do so).. I'm mad because she CAN.. perhaps, actually, jealous is a better word than mad... because I understand. As twisted and backwards as her logic is in a lot of places.. self preservation is pretty smart technically.. and dropping all of this does mean less stress for her which is important to life...
*sigh*... I think I will need to ask for help soon... I'm the thinker.. and I am struggling to think my way through this.
I'm struggling to find a way to remain or even BECOME independent like I want to be... ESPECIALLY Because of these bugs... If we could just move.. if there were no bed bugs. If the only obstacle was getting a place we could afford and moving Into that place.. we could do it... But losing near everything in order to do it... To have to rebuild so much.... (Beds.. heck FURNITURE is expensive)... I don't think we can do that.. not alone.
Not that, hey, a table is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY.. nor are chairs (posture can be worked on and upheld without those)... Nor are many pillows and blankets. One should do a person each... In Montana Winters it can get difficult.. but it's easily possible to sleep in sweaters and layers and stuff... Keep your head propped up carefully and it may be possible to avoid getting colds and back aches from sleeping on the floor too. And cats.. well they do need perches.. that bit IS important.. but they will gladly curl up next to you and in clothes to keep warm
..
Maybe I am overthinking... Maybe it's a GOOD thing to get rid of pretty much everything... I mean.. we don't NEED all of it... It's just nice.. don't need a dresser or books or a lot of clothes or a bed, really... We're human. We're animals... We're the only ones who have 'need' of these comforts and convieniences I'm so sad to lose... A nest is nice, but shelter is more important.. as is food.
Maybe... Maybe I can track down a 1 bedroom place we can afford instead of looking for a 2 bedroom and getting pegged with double the ridiculous prices... I mean.. without having living room stuff... The living room is just a room, right? It's technically my bedroom right now even... any kept TVs and electronics don't need to be off the floor if they're not plugged in...
... why am I freaking out exactly?
Well I certainly don't want to track in any bedbugs to a new place... That is valid... But the rest of it.. the rest of it does seem rather silly. I don't need to keep nearly as much as I want to. ... I suppose my biggest challenge now may be is working with Tevie to see this and be okay with it too...
Yay 3am second-wind ^^
#personal#random#ignore me#life in general#negative#bedbugs#bed bugs#no like being all itchy#but what ca ya do?#so tired...#but ive beem stressing a lot lately#and cut myself off from talking about it so i dont upset Tevie#but knowing my dad is always here for me.. it has been helping so much#realizing id be okay without anything i couldn't carry if i had to move in#with him... has helped me realize im probably being silly about my stuff#no one wants our porcelain dolls.. so i moght just throw all mine away tomorrow#as a start... it would be safer anyway because their boxes coild have buggies#in there or an egg stuck to them we can't see.#I'm certainly not putting those boxes into a freezer#they're too cumbersome#my grandmother is going to be PISSED.. but maybe she'll understand#our circumstances... or at least my mental state#maybe...

The Cost Of Owning A House Is More Than A Mortgage Payment If you are considering purchasing a home for the first time there are house expenses you must be aware of. Costly home repairs can take a comfortable monthly budget and turn it upside down if you’re not prepared. This type of financial uproar can cause increased debt and potentially a downward spiral if you can’t pay it off. Before you sign the mortgage documents at the bank or lending agency the most important thing you can do is create a budget. I’ve blogged about putting together a mock household budget that you should live with for 3-6 months so you get an idea of what types of expenses you should expect as a homeowner. These are everything from fixed expenses which are bills you will pay that are always going to be there and variable expenses. Variable expenses are those that you have control over such as groceries. If you have a budget of $200 for groceries each month and you really need to find an extra $50 then look to your variable expenses. These are the expenses you can work on to bring household budget expenses down. I received an email from a young man who is interested in purchasing his first home. Let’s have a read and see how we can help him get a better idea of what house expenses to expect. Owning A House Expenses Dear Mr.CBB, I’m in my early 20’s and looking to buy a home in the next year or two. I’ve saved up a sizeable downpayment and have been to the banks inquiring about a mortgage recently. It seems they think I can afford more than I can based on my downpayment, credit rating, and net income. My question is what typical house expenses should I expect when owning a home? I don’t want to get in over my head and then live pay to pay or face losing my house. Thanks, Derrick Hey Derrick, Thanks for your email. I’ll do my best to explain to you what we paid for house expenses when we first bought our home in Ontario, Canada. Mr.CBB Common Household Bills How much does a house cost per month? Well, likely more than you think especially if you haven’t done any research on house ownership. Honestly, house expenses differ based on where you live in Canada however we’ll explore the most common. House expenses are those that every homeowner should come to expect when owning a home. After you’ve bought your home there are certain bills that come with your house that you MUST budget for. What’s frightening is that many Canadians get fixated on that weekly, bi-weekly or monthly mortgage expense and forget about the rest of the household bills. Have you ever had someone tell you that you could afford a mortgage based on what they will lend you? Probably, we’ve all been through it but the sad reality is that is you can’t trust anyone but yourself. In fact, the main reason people go into debt is because of the unexpected house expenses they did not factor in. On the other hand, if house expenses were considered they may have been far lower than what they actually were. Sometimes you may get potential buyers asking the current homeowner for utility bills or costs to run the house. You will also know what the cost of property taxes is that you must pay to the city. So, you can find out more information than you thought about a house you are wanting to purchase. Keep in mind that personal usage and the number of people in the home will increase or decrease variable expenses but not fixed. House Expenses List No one says you have to have cable, internet, home phone or even a cell phone to manage your house expenses. In fact, these are expenses that you have some control over because you can add and take away what you want to pay for. For example, although you may think this is a monthly fixed expense, often you can cancel subscriptions or data plans if it’s too much for your budget. It’s similar to grocery shopping which is considered variable expenses since costs can fluctuate based on your spending decisions. With a fixed expense like property taxes, mortgage or rent payment, it’s a bit more complicated than that. The only perk with a fixed expense is that you always know the cost of your monthly expense. Property Taxes Your property taxes are a levy based on your home assessment and the neighbourhood you live in. How are property taxes calculated? Property taxes are calculated using the Current Value Assessment of a property, as determined by the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC), and multiplying it by the combined municipal and education tax rates for the applicable class of property. We pay our property taxes monthly which automatically is debited from our bank account. Many mortgage companies will factor in your property taxes to your mortgage payment and pay for it on your behalf. This ensures that you don’t miss a property tax payment and one less house expense to think about. When we had a mortgage we paid our property taxes on our own without the help of our lender. Home Maintenance We like to keep a minimum of $5000 a year in savings towards house maintenance simply because that’s what everything costs about now. This is above and beyond our emergency savings account. All j0king aside it depends on how big or little your home is and what renovations you plan to do. Our neighbor, for example, saves $5000 a year to do one renovation project for his home. On the other hand, home maintenance expenses also cover other things like the lawnmower, hired help, roof repairs or any repairs for that matter. Perhaps you need new windows or you have a leak that your insurance company won’t cover. It’s not something you should consider it’s imperative that every homeowner has a home maintenance budget. Utility Bills Unlike other bills such as cell phones, cable and so forth your utility bills are a must when you purchase a home. You’ll be paying for bills such as hydro, water, gas and any other rental units such as water heaters or ac units. Our hydro and water bill comes monthly where our water heater rental comes every three months. Your utility bills will fluctuate in price based on costs and how much you use. You can ask the previous owner of the home you buy for the average costs of the bills or the utility company when you call to set up your bills. Keep in mind that many utility companies ask for a deposit before they hook up your services especially if you’re a first time home buyer. This is to ensure they have a back-up in case you don’t pay your bill on time but will be used at the end when you decide to close your account. Some utility companies who trust your bill payments will be made on time offer the deposit back to you or put it towards a current bill. Mortgage For most Canadians holding a mortgage will likely be the most expensive debt they will ever own. When we bought our house we did so on one income only just in case something might happen. Thankfully, we took that route as something did happen as Mrs. CBB lost her job months into homeownership. Related: What happens if I have a late mortgage payment? For this reason, it’s critical to analyze how much your mortgage will cost you and the best time to pay for it. We chose accelerated weekly so we paid more than what it would have cost weekly. The reason for that was so we could pay the principal down faster which worked. In 5 years we paid our entire mortgage off by saving money and being frugal although this is not the norm. Paying off your mortgage fast is based on many factors such as net income, debt, and monthly expenses. Below are the charts I created using a Canadian mortgage calculator as mortgage affordability is only a piece of house expenses. Based on a $300,000 mortgage with an interest rate of 5.00% amortized over 25 years this is what your house would cost you once it’s paid in full. Beginning of Mortgage Payment Schedule End of Mortgage Payment Schedule Mortgage Summary Over the 25-year amortization period, you will: have made 1300 weekly payments of $402.33. have paid $300,000.00 in principal, $223,025.19 in interest, for a total of $523,025.19. Over the 5-year term, you will: have made 260 weekly payments of $402.33. have paid $34,444.03 in principal, $70,161.02 in interest, for a total of $104,605.05. At the end of your 5-year term, you will: have a balance of $265,555.97. Non-Monthly Savings By the end of the amortization period, with your selection of a non-monthly payment plan, you save $419.30 more in interest than if you had selected a monthly payment plan. By the end of the term, with your selection of a non-monthly payment plan, you save $50.40 more in interest than if you had selected a monthly payment plan. Period Principle Interest Total Balance Year 25 Totals $20,402.31 $518.69 $20,921.01 $0.00 After Term Totals $265,555.97 $152,864.18 $418,420.15 $0.00 Mortgage Totals $300,000.00 $223,025.19 $523,025.19 $0.00 Mortgage Insurance vs.Life Insurance In my opinion, ditch the mortgage insurance if you can get term life insurance which will cover the full amount of the insurance policy. This way your beneficiary can pay the mortgage in full if you should pass away and potentially have money left over. For example, my old term life insurance policy was for $400,000 which would have gone tax-free to Mrs. CBB. Since our mortgage is paid in full she could use that for funeral costs and anything else needed for her and our son. If we had a mortgage of $265,000 (our starting mortgage in 2009) and I passed away she would have been able to pay that in full and cover funeral expenses. A mortgage insurance policy only covers the remainder of the mortgage and goes straight to the lender. The problem is not everyone qualifies for life insurance but I’d say don’t skip this step. Always discuss details of any insurance policy with your advisor. If you are still unsure there is no reason why you can’t shop around until you find an advisor that earns your trust. Condo Fees (If applicable) Any time you purchase a condo you can expect to pay condo fees also known as strata fees and are non-negotiable. These fees typically are put into a fund and used to maintain common areas the property which the condos are built on. However, even a complex of detached homes may be considered a condo. When Mrs. CBB built her first house which was detached with a double garage and her property she had to pay condo fees. These fees covered maintenance of the back laneway and gardens surrounding the housing community during the seasons. This included snow removal, lawn care for boulevard as well as flowers and other shrubs to keep it looking pristine. She believes she paid just under $100 a month for condo fees back in 2004-2005. Related: Should my first rental property be a condo or a house? Home Insurance You can’t get a mortgage without house insurance which covers various facets of your home in the event of an accident or unforeseen event such as a flood. Be sure to read your insurance policy (even the fine print) so you know what you are paying for ane what is covered. Not all home insurance policies are created equally and you can pay for extra riders to be added if you want them. Riders are enhanced coverage you can add to your policy such as overland flooding when water from the land enters your house. The water might enter via doors, windows or through your basement during rain, winter meltdown or if you live near a lake or river. Also, if you have any type of land or beach rights you may need insurance coverage in the event there is injury even if neighbors are included in using the land. Always consult your insurance company to make sure you are paying for everything needed. These extra house expenses will increase your overall monthly budget. Also, if you own a condo your home insurance may differ from that of a detached home. Again, consult with your insurance agent and ensure you understand everything. If you don’t then ask questions until you do. Our current standard house insurance costs us just over $1000 a year which we pay monthly. The house was assessed by MPAC at just over $350,000, unfinished basement, small property, 1500 sq feet living in the Greater Toronto Area. Emergency Savings Major home repair costs can easily take down your emergency savings or increase the amount of debt you have. Using a credit card to pay for home repairs is not the best idea especially if it’s a high rate of interest. We save a minimum a year worth of budgeted house expenses including all budget categories in the event something should happen. Keep in mind that if you know that your furnace may only last another year or so start saving in your projected expenses. This way when it goes you have some or even all of the cash saved up to purchase a new one without having to pay monthly charges. What happens if your roof starts to leak? If it turns out you need to replace your entire roof these expenses will run you into the thousands of dollars even if you do the work yourself. Your best bet is to start saving ahead of buying a house or to keep some savings back to start your emergency savings fund. This might mean you hang on tight before you jump into homeownership but it’s better to be prepared for unexpected events. Debt Repayment (If any) Lastly, always consider debt repayment when you are applying for a mortgage. House expenses which include all of the above coupled with other personal expenses and debts can be overwhelming for your budget. If you walk into a mortgage blind or try to take one on living a fine line between pay to pay you’re pushing it. It’s better to wait until you lower your debt load and have enough money saved up for a downpayment and savings. You never know what could happen especially job loss or death which can throw a wrench into any budget. In Summary I believe Derrick is on the right path considering house expenses before he gets a mortgage. When I was a bit younger than his age I researched and asked as many questions as I could. As a young owner, the last thing you want is to walk into a mortgage uninformed. Related: Was I Too Young When I Bought My First Property? You can’t always trust the lender or the real estate agent so put some faith in yourself and your finances. Remember, at the end of the day they are working to make money and you are working to save it. House expenses are a big factor in homeownership success and I wish you all the luck on your journey. Discussion: What other house expenses would you consider as critical before accepting a mortgage? Do you have any experiences to share for Derrick and other readers? Share them below in the comment section. Creepy Mysteries From Around The World, Including The Wailing House
Creepy Mysteries From Around The World, Including The Wailing House
Mystery doesn’t always mean murder. From strange creatures to mysterious visitors and tales of reincarnation; there is something out there for everyone. On this list are 10 such mysteries to boggle the mind and ignite the imagination. See Also: 10 Mysteries Unlikely To Ever Be Solved 10 The Presence
On 20 May 1916, three weary figures stumbled up to a whaling station on the north coast of South Georgia. Ernest Shackleton, Frank Worsley and Tom Crean had walked for one and a half days non-stop to find help to rescue their crew who were stuck on the other side of the island as well as Elephant Island. The journey was treacherous, as they had to cross mountainous regions with only a rope and axe as aid. Their bravery was rewarded when they eventually found help at Stromness and all the stranded men were rescued. Only several weeks after the incident, did the three men realise they all had the same weird experience in common. All of them had felt a strange ‘presence’ during their journey; almost as though another person had joined their rescue effort. All three men recounted how they felt this presence ‘walking’ alongside them right up until they reached Stromness, whereafter it disappeared. Shackleton, in particular, was very rattled by the experience and did not like speaking of it. Many theories have been presented for what the three men encountered, such as a shared hallucination, neurological disorders and side effects of high doses of prescribed medicine. However, just what happened while they were on their trip and who or what accompanied them on it, remains a mystery.[1] 9Druid of Colchester
In 1996, researchers discovered a unique grave near Colchester, Essex. It was estimated that the man inside the grave would have most likely died during the Roman invasion or between 40 – 60AD. The burial chamber was constructed entirely out of wood, and contained a cloak hung with medical tools including scalpels, needles and retractors. In addition to this, metal poles, a jet bead and herbs including Mugwort were found. There was even a chess board alongside the remains. It is unknown, however, who the man may have been, although experts believe he could have either been an ancient Druid, or a doctor. There is only one Roman account on the Druids of Britain, provided by Tacitus and it remains very difficult to correctly identify Druid artefacts and remains here. Therefore, the true identity of the man in the burial chamber will most likely never be known.[2] 8Skull helmets
Archaeologists excavating burials at Salango in Ecuador between 2014 and 2016 made a puzzling discovery that they have yet to find an explanation for. Among the burials were the remains of two infants sporting ‘helmets’ made from children’s skulls. It was found that the skulls were likely placed over the infants’ heads while there was still flesh on them; with one of them having their face pointing through the cranial vault. There was also a small bone lodged between the infant’s head and the skull covering it. The archaeologists have no explanation for the skulls covering the heads of the infants although one theory suggests it may have been for protection according to ancient ritual. While is it also not known what led to the deaths of the infants and children, their bones reflected malnourishment. This is thought to have been caused by a volcanic eruption in the area that may have led to a shortage of food. These findings have only very recently been published and more evidence is needed for any of the theories to be proven as correct.[3] 7 Wailing house
Alan and Christine Tait loved their Ammanford house in Wales right up until June 2018. Christine was making coffee late one night, when she became aware of strange noises emanating from the house. She called her husband and they both tried to establish where the noises were coming from. They heard flushing noises, running machines, a motorcycle and disembodied screams. Eventually they realised the sounds were coming from the basement located underneath the kitchen. Alan dug into the walls and inserted recorders to try and find out what could be causing the noises. The equipment recorded police sirens, a female screaming, barking dogs and a car horn. Christine is of the belief that there are people living down in the basement and that the sounds may be linked to human trafficking or even a drug lab. However, police have not found any evidence of this. In the meantime, Christine and Alan are too scared to return to their home and are travelling the UK trying to find someone who can help them solve the mystery.[4] 6 Van Meter Visitor
U.G. Griffith was on his way to his house in Van Meter, Iowa on 29 September 1903 when he noticed a spotlight on top of a building which he had never seen before. Walking towards the building, the light jumped to another roof, before disappearing into the darkness. Telling the story the next day, people were all ears because Griffith had been a respected citizen of Van Meter. On 30 September the town’s doctor, Dr Alcott, woke up to a beam of light shining into his face in the early hours of the morning. Running outside with his firearm, thinking there were intruders on his property, Dr Alcott froze to the spot when he saw in front of him a large humanoid creature with massive wings and a horn on its head. The horn was beaming a stream of bright light into his house. Dr Alcott shot the creature 5 times, but the monster didn’t even blink. The doctor then ran back inside and when he looked back, the creature had disappeared. On 1 October, also in the early hours, bank manager Clarence Dunn walked to the bank where he worked with the uneasy feeling that the recent ‘monster’ sightings may have been robbers trying to distract the townsfolk while planning the rob the place. He locked himself inside the building, clutching a shotgun for protection. Just after midnight, Dunn heard a strange gasping noise. Then a bright light shone into the bank and Dunn could see a figure outside. He fired the shotgun at the figure, and it fled. Later, he would find footprints with only 3 toe prints outside the bank. More people witnessed the creature, including J.L. Platt Jr. who encountered it at the entrance to an abandoned coal mine. He also saw a smaller similar-looking creature standing next to the large one. Shooting at them once again had no effect. The community then decided to board up the entrance to the mine and the creatures were never seen again. Was this just a scary story that had the whole town on edge or did Van Meter’s residents see something supernatural more than 100 years ago?[5] 5 Krishna’s Butter Ball
On a 45-degree slope (base less than 4 feet) in Mahabalipuram, India, rests a huge boulder (over 250 tons) named Krishna’s Butter Ball. The way the boulder is perched makes it look as though it rolled down the hill and somehow stopped right before plunging all the way down. Gravity has not been able to move it; neither has the shoves of tourists who try to get it to roll further down. It is thought that the boulder is a glacier erratic, but it is unknown why it stopped where it did. According to Hindu mythology however, the great god Krishna was extremely fond of eating butter when he was just an infant and because the boulder has an orangey tint, it is believed by some that it is in fact a dollop of butter dropped by Krishna. Hence the name: Krishna’s Butter Ball.[6] 4 Shrieks of Forest Grove
In 2016, a shrill shrieking sound in Forest Grove started keeping people up at night and causing dogs to bark incessantly. Residents described the sound as car brakes screeching, a siren going off and even a banshee howling into the wind. Some recorded the sounds to replay later and try figure out what the cause may be. Theories ranged from a leak in a pipeline, a fire alarm, or a train screeching to a halt. None of these theories panned out. The noise continued and was heard at several locations in Forest Grove. A physics professor at the local university tried to track down the source of the sound by pinning all the locations on a Google Map of the area. There was no pattern however, and the mystery remained. Residents started getting freaked out and theories started including ghosts, Bigfoot, aliens and more. The story circulated on news channels and the sound continued. Then, one night the sound was noticeably absent and never returned. It remains unknown what caused the high-pitched noise and why it ceased just as abruptly as it started.[7] 3 Hanan Monsour / Suzanne Ghanem
Hanan Monsour was born in the 30s in Lebanon. She married Farouk Monsour when she was only 20 years old and went on to have two daughters, Leila and Galareh. Soon after the birth of her second child, Hanan was diagnosed with heart disease and was warned to not have any more children. Despite this, she had a son in 1962. Her brother died in 1963 and soon after, Hanan started getting ill. She spoke a lot of dying and told her husband she would come back after death. Hanan was 36 when she died after having heart surgery. She tried unsuccessfully to telephone her daughter, Leila, before the operation. Suzanne Ghanem was born ten days after Hanan’s death. Her mother claimed to have had a dream, before Suzanne was born, in which a woman told her she was going ‘to come to her’. Much later, Suzanne’s mother saw a picture of Hanan Monsour and claimed it looked like the woman from her dream. Suzanne was only 16 months old when she started tugging at the landline phone in her parent’s home and repeating the words: ‘Hello, Leila?” Her family was astonished by this as they did not know anyone called Leila. As Suzanne grew older, she told her parents that Leila was one of her children from a past life. At the age of two, she mentioned all three of Hanan’s children’s names as well as Farouk, her parents and brothers. Upon hearing this, the Monsours set off to visit Suzanne. While they were together, Suzanne identified all Hanan’s relatives and told Farouk that she remembered giving jewels to her brother Hercule before she had had her surgery. No one other than the Monsour family had known about this. By the time she was five, Suzanne called Farouk multiple times a day. This continued until she was twenty-five years old. Farouk accepted that Suzanne was the reincarnation of Hanan and believed the physical resemblance between the two women was further proof. Naturally, most believe this to be merely a coincidence or a hoax. But what truly transpired remains shrouded in mystery.[8] 2 Nunavut ping
A strange pinging sound emanating from the ocean in Nunavut, have caused serious headaches for hunters in the area as it seems to be scaring away the sea mammals they usually hunt for food. In 2017 it became apparent that the Fury and Hecla Strait was near empty when it should have been teeming with seals and whales. Naturally, theories abound on what could be causing the mysterious pinging, including a Greenpeace effort to save seals from being hunted and sonar surveys, but none of them have been conclusively proven. A military plane has even been sent to fly over the area, but it picked up nothing other than whales and walruses. Canadian Forces at the time were going to send acoustic specialists to converse with residents of nearby Igloolik, to try and gather more information about the ping. To date however, the source of the ping remains unknown.[9] 1 What happened to Cecil Grace?
Cecil Grace was an aviator who decided to enter a flying competition in 1910; the prize being £2,000 to the first Englishman who could successfully fly over the English Channel and the furthest into Europe. On 22 December 1910, the competition was on and Cecil flew from Swingate Downs to Calais in France. Unfortunately, this was not far enough to win, so he turned back to England to start over. It should have taken around 40 minutes. However, by mid-afternoon, Cecil’s plane was nowhere to be seen. Cecil never returned. On 6 January 1911, a pair of aviator goggles and a cap washed up on a Belgium beach. A couple of weeks later, a body washed up as well. The body was never identified due to its advanced state of decomposition, but Cecil’s friends had serious doubts whether it was the aviator’s remains. Even after Cecil was officially declared dead, his closest friends refused to believe that the remains were those of their fellow pilot’s. Considering that the last sighting of Cecil’s plane was near Kent, they believed it was too far from the Belgium beach for the remains to have been Cecil’s. To date, Cecil’s plane has never been found. What exactly happened to the pilot, remains a mystery.[10]

All I Really Need to Know I Learned on Summer Staff
If you can believe it, it’s been one month since Irma (it hit Barbuda on September 6th, and officially made landfall in the Keys the morning of September 10th). I’ve been back home for over two weeks, and things are nowhere near back to normal. So here’s another attempt at getting my thoughts down before too much time passes. Also, I spent two summers in college working on the ropes course at Saranac, a Young Life camp in the Adirondacks. That will become important later.
Just a heads up: I’m not going to post a lot of pictures, because I find it sort of weird. I’ll post some of my own house, but I felt uncomfortable sharing other people’s hardship. If you’re curious about the destruction in the Keys, there are a lot of photos and videos posted by or with the permission of the residents themselves. Feel free to do some Google searches, or you can message me privately and I can send you some links. Also, I’ve included some good donation links later, but they are not comprehensive! Feel free to find another organization you care about and donate there (but yes, there is a Mote link in there!). Okay, on with the show:
After quick stops in Orlando (to get my car) and Boca (to sleep!) I drove back into the Keys on the morning of Thursday, September 21st. The Keys had opened to residents on Sunday, and Wednesday had been the last day of the checkpoint so I could just drive right in. That in itself felt weird. It was one of those moments where I had trouble remembering that I am 26 years old and not 10; I kept waiting for someone to come to their senses and send me away. Clearly this unaccompanied child should not be allowed into a disaster zone! How irresponsible! Obviously that didn’t happen, because I AM 26, and a legal resident of the Keys, and therefore totally allowed to be there. So after that brief existential panic, the drive continued.
The first thing I noticed was the foliage: all the leaves were off the trees. It looked like New England in the winter (without the snow, obviously). Since there’s no foliage in the Keys that does this normally, it looked very odd. I could see into neighborhoods off the side of Route 1 that I had never been able to see before. There were also big piles of debris by the side of the road, but these were mostly vegetation. I know some places in Key Largo were hit very hard, and I don’t want to minimize that, but the beginning of the drive looked reasonably okay (part of this was also that Key Largo residents were allowed to return sooner, so they had already done a lot of clean-up).
As I continued south, things started to get worse. Entire trees were down, and more and more of the debris piles were made up of people’s personal belongings. Refrigerators, mattresses, shelves, coffee tables, and everything else were piled by the side of the road. In the upper Keys many of these piles had already started being consolidated, but as I drove they started spreading out. Every home and business had a similar pile, and the piles were often at least a full story tall.
When I hit Marathon, it started getting hard. The upper Keys I essentially just drive through, but Marathon I’ve actually spent a lot of time in. It was also the beginning of the worst of the destruction. Businesses that I’d been to in the past were completely flattened, telephone poles were snapped in half, and many side streets were completely impassable due to debris. But even that wasn’t as bad as when I hit Big Pine Key.
While I don’t live on Big Pine, I’m very close. It’s where I go to church, go to the library, shop for groceries, and pick up Chinese food. Many dear friends live on Big Pine, and it was decimated. There’s so much destruction it’s a bit hard to describe, but believe me when I say it’s hard to see. Entire streets were reduced to piles of rubble. The next few islands (including mine) looked much the same. My usual gas station had been literally knocked over. The entire roof that was over the pumps was bent over and lying on its side. By the time I was turning down my street, I thought there was no way my house could be in as good shape as my roommates said it was. I had seen all these newer, better quality homes completely destroyed, how could ours have survived? So I braced myself as I prepared to see how the Gulf side of Ramrod Key had fared.
As it turns out (and as you probably already saw on Facebook) hurricanes are extremely random and we live in a miracle house on a miracle street. Our house had a roof, all four walls, and had only gotten about a foot of water inside. The Atlantic side of Ramrod (where we used to live!) had seen multiple streets completely flattened. A house two blocks closer to the water than us got an eight-foot storm surge (we know because the owner stayed and took pictures). I think that part of what saved us is an extremely lucky location: between our street and the Gulf is the largest area of preserved hardwood hammock habitat in the Keys (our version of a climax forest), and that absorbed a lot of the surge. But we could just as easily have been hit by the pockets of extreme wind or tornados. We truly got very lucky. And since I didn’t get back until Thursday, I never even had to live without power, AC, and running water.
That being said, there’s a lot of work to do. When I first got back the entire lower Keys had a weird swampy smell from all of the flooding (TCI friends: it smelled like the salinas!). So being outside to do yard work wasn’t super pleasant. And while most of our house has cement walls and tile floors, we have to rip out anything that might be growing mold. This includes any and all drywall up to a certain height, the one room with wood flooring, all of our doors, and most of our living room furniture (those of you who have visited: we saved the tall bar chairs! I was so glad). The dishwasher, microwave, and washer and dryer all work, but the stove is broken. Also somehow the grill, which was outside the whole time, is fine. Our sheds were largely reduced to kindling, and we lost most of the little fruit trees in our back yard. Personally, I had to throw out my futon mattress (old to begin with) and two empty bookshelves (very cheap from Kmart). So no huge losses there, and all of my actual personal stuff is fine. We’re making a lot of progress, and some wonderful friends have come to help us. I’m learning so many life skills!
But it’s been a couple weeks of this now, and the fatigue is starting to set in. I know people always say this, but it’s really true: surviving a disaster is one thing, recovering afterwards is entirely another. Every time we complete one task, there are suddenly five more that we hadn’t even thought of yet. Have you ever seen that Tom Hanks movie The Money Pit? It’s like that. I don’t think I’ll ever find that movie entertaining again. Our house is livable, but it’s not like it’s back to normal. One bedroom is completely under construction, our counters are still covered with hurricane rations, and we haven’t replaced the doors yet so they keep sliding across the floor in a manner that makes it sound like the house is haunted. Plus, after a few more torrential rainstorms, the roof started leaking. We’re getting one of those blue roofs from the Army Corps of Engineers, but they have a lot of houses to get to (don’t worry, we’ve patched it for now). And since it’s so hard to dispose of waste in the Keys (not a lot of land), there are still piles of debris everywhere. They’re starting to consolidate them, so there are these giant walls made up of essentially people’s entire lives lining the highway. They’re honestly about three stories tall.
The biggest thing though, is that we’re all just so TIRED. It’s hard to go to work all day, where you’re probably cleaning up from the hurricane, to then go back home and have to keep cleaning up from the hurricane until you go to bed. You can’t escape it. I catch myself getting irritable, and fed up, and impatient. You start feeling desperate for just one part of your life to be how it was before the storm, but that’s impossible. It’s not an exaggeration to say that people’s lives will never be the same. Some may argue that it’s just stuff, but that’s not really true. It’s your home. It’s where you made a life, made memories, maybe where you raised your family. For me, it’s the first place that felt like home after I graduated college. It’s been destroyed, and the work it’s going to take to fix it looks endless right now. Your emotional “home base” is gone, which is exhausting enough even before you factor in all the physical labor needed to bring it back. There is no home base anymore; there are only piles of trash and drywall. I just really want to stress how tired we all are, especially because we’re actually doing really well (I promise!). So if those of us who were comparatively lucky feel like this, imagine how everyone else feels. Imagine the tragedy in Puerto Rico. Donald Trump can go suck an egg, everyone is working their butts off.
To finally bring all of this back to the title of the post, I never thought two summers at camp would prove so useful years later. The skills I learned on Summer Staff have been invaluable. After safely seeing hundreds of teenagers through a high ropes course I feel pretty prepared for a variety of disasters. The obvious skills, like experience with landscaping and power tools (#ropescapenance4eva) have obviously been helpful, but also the ability to work long hours, keep a good attitude (hopefully), and work as a team with people I just met. Also, I’m pretty good at cleaning bathrooms. There hasn’t been any call for safe belaying techniques yet, but if that comes up I’ll be ready.
But the most important thing I learned is the result of one specific Bible study. Without getting too theological or technical, we were talking about the importance God gives rest and also about how in the Jewish tradition (so also in the Old Testament) the day starts at sundown. That means the day starts with rest, and ends with work. After some more Biblical digging, we finally crystallized an idea that changed how I think about rest forever: you should rest FOR your work, not FROM your work. In other words: rest first, work later. So often we use our rest time, be it actual sleep or something else, as a time to obsess about the previous day when what we SHOULD be using it for is storing up energy for the tasks that lie ahead tomorrow. Put yesterday behind you, rest up, and move forward. It’s purely a mental game; I’m not saying my sleep pattern changed drastically or something. But this shift in mentality (when I remember it) really helps me not get burnt out. To be honest, I had totally forgotten this little piece of wisdom until I came across a quote I had put in my planner a month earlier. It’s by Robert Louis Stevenson, and he said: “Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds that you plant.” So that’s all I’m really trying to say to my fellow hurricane people. Rest for the work ahead, and don’t worry, you’ve been planting a whole forest. We’ll see it grow eventually.
And there really are a lot of bright spots in all of this. Neighbors helping neighbors and so on. Various Facebook groups have actually done a great job distributing key recovery information, and even in returning personal property to their rightful owners. Despite some sensationalist reports (helped along by some paranoia), we’ve barely seen any looting. Volunteers have been coming down from the mainland, and we were sent so much bottled water and non-perishable food we now have too much. If you want to help, and you’re close, we can always use more work teams. If you want to help, and you’re farther away, find a local organization to support and just send money. They’ll get it to where it needs to go.
And please PLEASE help Puerto Rico. They are in much worse shape than we are, and the government didn’t move to help them nearly as quickly as it moved to help us. They are fellow Americans (which really shouldn’t be the point, but it needs to be said), and they need help. Send some.
Before I go: eternal thanks to everyone who has reached out, offered help, checked up on me, or even just sent me funny YouTube videos. Your support and compassion truly means the world to me. And ESPECIALLY thank you to the friends and family I stayed with throughout this whole ordeal! I will be forever grateful. Rest up, everybody.

Graduation and new dilemas
June 23, 2020
We did it. We drove 13+ hours (including multiple stops) to Fort Worth and back for my son’s graduation. Overall it was a wonderful trip where I got to see family, take pics, work on my tan, and watch my son get his diploma. Well, the diploma holder. The baby did great on the car ride, with the circumstances, and only lost it on the way back with about 3 hours left. He was over it in a big way. But my husband was able to calm him down, as usual. I think my baby can sense his patience and his calm, whereas I am impatient and angry and overwhelmed with things. The days leading up to the trip were anxiety filled and lead to arguments between us. I don’t know how caught up this diary blog is but we recently had to replace the entire a/c unit at our house back home, that lead to finding a leak in the roof, which also lead to finding out the foundation needs additional repairs. The whole in the ceiling in the garage is still there, there are cracks in the walls in the living room, and several appliances need updating or replacing. The dryer door, the ice maker, the vent hood, blah blah blah home ownership woes blah. People keep calling and texting my husband to make a cash offer on the house, and I made a comment about yeah they are only seeing the outside, not all the problems inside and that sent us into an argument. Not to mention the argument the next morning as we are packing to leave. I, as the mother and woman, make lists of everything we will need on our 4 day trip. What I need to get ready for the graduation, what we want to take to leave at our house, things for the baby... My husband literally needs clothes and deodorant and he’s good. It doesn’t work that way for me and he knows it. Cue the argument about packing things. In reality, I did over pack because I didn’t work out ONCE during the trip like I had originally planned. Shame on me. But I was tired and heavy from all the extra food we had been consuming on this trip. Not to mention I was on serious pms emotions because I was supposed to start my period while we were there, and I didn’t, which is a whole other story in itself. I’m not pregnant, btw, I did a test this weekend and it was negative. My period has been messed up for months now. ANYWAY, my son LOVED his graduation gift from us, a laptop computer with music software that he likes, and we were able to celebrate briefly with my family on Sunday before the ceremony. We enlisted as a last minute SOS his sister to help us take pics, and she did a fabulous job. We were out in the texas summer heat but we did it and I have some amazing pictures to commemorate the occasion with my son. Both my sons. I did, however, forget the face cutouts my sis in law had had made that we were to use during the graduation, and we were late getting to our seats because we were waiting on her to get to our hotel room so we could leave. I had always envisioned watching the kids file in while pomp and circumstance played and becoming overwhelmed with emotion... I heard it briefly as I sulked over leaving the face cutouts in the trunk and security not allowing us to retrieve them as I rushed to find our seats. By the time we were seated the pledge of allegiance was over and the principal was speaking. It was very different from what I had pictured but we were in a pandemic and all in all it was as good as it could be. I was able to get pictures afterward with Zane for the last time before we left town, and say my tearful goodbye. We made it back without incident.
I’m getting my tattoo this Saturday, which still sounds like a distant dream, so I’ll be happy when it’s over and done with and I have new ink in my skin.
On his return, my husband found out a coworker put in his two weeks. Basically, he has been told the job is his if he wants it. There have been many discussions recently on where we see the future going, especially with all the recent problems we have had with our house. Ultimately, my husband wants to fix it up and rent it out. That leads us to discuss where we actually want to live. Here in Florida? Back in Texas closer to his work? Or fix up the house we live in now and stay put for the next 10 years until it’s just about paid off and THEN make a move. I think, last we discussed it, and believe me it is hard to keep track, he wants to finish the job here, which will likely wrap up at the end of this year or beginning of next, fix up our house just enough to rent it out, and then roll our mortgage into a gigantic new one and get a new house somewhere in Texas near his job. He wants to be back in Texas because he thinks his dad doesn’t have many years left. And he most likely doesn’t. He’s not in good health and doesn’t take care of himself. I am in agreement with all this, but there is still the matter of having one more baby. Our original plan back in the day was to start trying once we move back. I have a huge problem with being hot pregnant during the Texas summer months, which when we visited just now was in the 100s and it wasn’t technically summer yet, and want to wait until June or July to get knocked up so I can spend the heavily pregnant and hot times spread out over the winter months and have the baby in March. I will be just shy of 40, and Leo will be 3. Not to say I will be able to handle both children at once, especially since I have NEVER in my life seen that done firsthand, but I can’t imagine trying to keep a toddler busy and out of my hair while juggling a newborn and pumping or breastfeeding every 2 hours and not sleeping for days. When Leo was a newborn, I slept in the two hour windows he gave me. I won’t be able to do that while having a toddler to look after too. I honestly don’t see how women do it. Or I do see how accidents happen in the home more easily. Oh, the toddler fell off the furniture? Into the pool? drank the poison from the cabinet? yeah, probably while I was exhausted and chained to this other human being mouth to feed we felt like having. Let’s just make things THAT much harder, shall we? My husband gets 4 weeks off of work now, thank GOD so that should help me get caught up with rest in the beginning. I can only hope that jump start is enough to keep me going. And throw in the need to return to the gym in there somewhere. Not that I’m in immaculate shape, but I would like to continue to work on my body and not just let myself be disgusting and let go once I’m 40. It makes me break out into sweats just thinking about doing it all. But I digress.
Now that this new job has become available, there is a new option on the table. Possibly buying a house here, renting out the texas home, and staying put. I don’t have an issue with that, actually, barring we can get a nice house with a pool (I can’t be expected to lug this boy to the beach all the time) down here in a nice area. Interest rates are supposedly down right now because the world is currently falling apart. But that leaves us with fixing up the house back home enough to be livable to someone, hiring a management company because I’ll be damned if we are to be expected to deal with a broken water heater at 5 in the morning from Florida, and with the stipulation that it be rented to someone other than my husband’s enormous family. Because I can see it now. Someone falls on hard times and ‘rent will be a few days late this month’ and how my husband will be super understanding, and then ‘a couple of months behind’ turns into us paying for both houses and strapped for cash and him unable to evict said deadbeat tenant because they are ‘family’. Nope. Not happening.
Then he drops this bomb on me. After he tells his dad, mind you. He’s thinking about this job down here in Florida, but wants to move his dad in with us for 6 months at a time. oh. hell. to. the. no. I don’t even want family visiting us as it is, invading my personal space while my husband is at work all day, let alone taking up residence with us and being in my face all day. I don’t mind his dad, I really don’t. When he lives somewhere else and we can exchange pleasantries and then go back to our lives. He isn’t a very good housekeeper, and I don’t plan on cooking just because he is there. I get a long just fine the way we are here now. I work out in my living room since I can’t go to the gym anymore. And that works for me. I do not under any circumstances need an audience while I try to work out. I don’t need an extra person to clean up after. I don’t want someone interfering with how I raise my son. I’ve been there done that with my own family and that did not turn out well. I just like my privacy. Always have. And then what? I’m supposed to be pregnant and have the baby down here with zero people to help? And then my husband throws in the dad as an option to help. The man can barely help himself, he won’t be able to pick Leo up or control him other than talking to him. And 3 year olds don’t exactly do as they're told all the time. Or any of the time. I know my husband loves his dad and he is a good man, but I just don’t want anyone living with us. It’s an inconvenience to say the least. If that’s the case, I’d rather be back in Fort Worth in our house, fixing it up and spending the summer melting away with no pool. Part of this is that I don’t like change. I loathe it. Part of this is that I value my privacy. Part of this is I don’t want more housework to do. Part of this is I loathe entertaining. Expecting to keep people entertained and happy and have guests. I want to do my own thing and everyone else to do their own and everybody’s happy. We are right now at odds over this. If this is how we have to do it, then I would rather leave Florida and never return. As much as I love it down here, a huge part of that is the fact that there are no family members (his or mine) here to meddle. We are on our own and I love it. We can visit home when we want and on our terms. This is something my husband and I have always had arguments about. I keep my family at arms length, he can’t get his close enough. Which I understand. It’s how we were raised. I was raised with a family no larger than 4 people. He was raised with hundreds. Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Sisters, Brothers, Nephews, Nieces. I had none of that. Zero. And I grew quite accustomed to my time being my time and my things being my things. Doing what I want when I wanted. Not having to wait on anyone else or invite anyone else or take a poll to see when the best time to do what is. Yes I’m spoiled in that way. But it’s a huge thing to do to ask me to move someone into my home. Where I go to get away from people and be in my own personal space. I don’t even want my family to visit for 2 weeks. I’m going to tell my grandmother she can come for 1 week max and no she can’t stay here while she’s here. I would hope my husband will do the same for his brother and his family but I don’t know how that is going to go. I’m not some evil person. But my space is my space and I don’t need an audience or a guest to dote over and clean up after. I don’t want to worry about us not having any food in the fridge. We live how it works for us now, and I don’t want to have to change that.
I have a feeling the worst is not over for me. Far from it. But I know me and I won’t be able to keep from pouting and sulking if I don’t get my way. Which will lead to more arguments. Which will lead to more resentment. I don’t want to lose my husband but I don’t want to gain another houseguest either. I honestly am angry and upset about the whole thing. Why shouldn’t I get a say in our future? Why can’t we have some mutual agreement, why is it 6 months at a time or nothing? That’s half a fucking year! And I know how hard it is to get a parent to leave. My mother was supposed to stay with me for 3 months and that turned into a whole year. I know how he is, and when the 6 months is up he won’t be able to say OK now get out, please! 6 months will turn into a year easily and then I don’t think I can keep the act up. I will be bitter and resentful and we will only grow apart. I don’t want that at all. I don’t know what we are going to do but I do know this situation is only going to get hairier. Help.

How I learned to stop worrying and love DIY
” Oh good ,” Kim said when I rolled out of bed yesterday morning.” I’m glad you’re up .” She gets up at 5:30 for work most days, but I tend to sleep in. Especially during allergy season.
“Huh?” I grunted. It was 6:10 and I was very groggy. My evening allergy meds kick my butt. Plus, I hadn’t had my coffee yet.
” Something’s incorrect with the bathroom sink ,” she said.” Look. It’s leaking. The floor is soaked .” She wasn’t kidding. The bathmat was drenched. When I seemed under the vanity, I was greeted by a small lake.
“Ugh,” I grunted. This wasn’t how I wanted to start my day.
Kim kissed me goodbye and hastened off to work. I pulled on a pair of gasps, poured some coffee, pulled out the vanity drawers, and got to work.
I was worried that I might have caused the leak when I replaced the sink’s pop-up assembly last month, but no. The problem was obvious: The hot water line to the bidet( which I installed in October) had worked itself loose.( By the route, I love my bidet. Too much information, perhaps, but it’s some of the best sixty bucks I’ve ever expended .)
Fortunately, the fix was simple. I reattached everything, then added a light layer of videotape to prevent similar problems in the future.
Note: As a safety measure — to make sure I wasn’t missing anything — I took photos of the issue and made a trip to the hardware store to ask their advice. They told me everything should be fine.
This might seem like a small thing to some folks but it’s a big deal in my world. You see, I’ve never actually been a DIY type of guy. I used to get overwhelmed by home improvement. I felt unprepared, incompetent.
More and more, though, I’m learning that I can do it myself. It just takes patience and perseverance. And the more projects I complete, the more confidence I gain.
Learning to Love DIY
When I was younger, I avoided do-it-yourself projects whenever possible. As a son, I never learned how to be handy around the house. I could program( or construct) personal computers. I could write. I could do accounting or analyze literature. But I couldn’t replace a violate window or repair a leak.
My ex-wife and I bought our first house in 1993. Fortunately, it was in great shape. During our ten years in the place, there weren’t a lot of things that needed to be repaired.
And when things did require run, they were obviously beyond our abilities. The water heater exploded on Christmas morning. The electric wall heater caught flame. We discovered an infestation of carpenter ants. These were problems I was never going to fix myself. We hired experts to address them for us.
In 2004, we moved to a hundred-year-old farmhouse. The previous owned had lived there for fifty years and had done a lot of lazy mends himself.
Because buying the place tapped nearly all of our financial resources, we were forced to handle some of the repairs and remodeling ourselves. We hired somebody to hang drywall for us, but we tore down the old walls ourselves. To fix the faulty wiring, we asked an electrician friend to help us find problems and make mends. And so on.
Still, I didn’t feel entirely comfortable with DIY projects around the house. I did them when I had to, but mostly I tried to set them off — or to pay somebody else to solve the problem.
After our divorce, I deliberately sought a place where I did not must be addressed home improvement. I bought a condo. All exterior run was handled by somebody else. Sure, I was on the hook for problems inside my division, but those were easy to foist on contractors. For five years, I totally avoided home mends and home improvement.
When Kim and I bought our present country cottage, we had a chat.” You know you’re going to have to do lots of DIY projects ,” she said.” There’s a ton incorrect with the house — and that’s merely the stuff we know about .”
” I know ,” I said.” But I’m older now, and I’m actually looking forward to developing my DIY abilities. I have a better posture. I suppose I’ll be fine .”
You know what? I have been fine. After paying a small fortune to get the major things handled — roof, siding, floors — we’ve intentionally been taking on the day-to-day stuff ourselves. It’s much slower this route, but it’s also cheaper. Plus, it’s more satisfying.
In the past eighteen months, we’ve :P TAGEND
Painted several rooms in the house, and have plans to paint the others. Installed new molding and trim in several rooms. Painted the kitchen cabinet and installed new hardware. Replace the kitchen faucet( on Super Bowl Sunday ). Repaired the bathroom sink pop-up assembly. Replaced our only lavatory. Install a bidet attachment on the toilet. Construct out the inside of a Tuff Shed to make it my writing studio. Construct a porch for the writing studio. Stained our new back deck( which we did not build ourselves ). Begun work on a fire pit for summertime gatherings. Installed raised beds for vegetable horticulture. Removed a cedar tree and planted a small orchard. Hung lighting in the laundry room. Install a car stereo.
Some of these projects( the writing studio, for instance) were major. Some( like the laundry-room illuminating) were minor. All of them have helped me gain confidence that yes, I can do things myself.
It’s still no fun when I wake up to find that a leak has inundated the bathroom. But at least now I don’t feel overwhelmed. I’m able to pause, think about what needs done, and then tackle the job. It’s a totally different feeling than I had even three years ago. Three years ago, stuff like this would overwhelm me. Now, I almost love these DIY projects.( For real !) Perhaps it’s because I’m old .~ ATAGEND

Nine Steps to DIY Success
Yesterday as I was crawling under the bathroom sink, I thought about how I’ve learned to love DIY, how I’ve changed from viewing these tasks as chores to viewing them as opportunities to learn.
As I fixed the leak, I made a mental listing of the things I’ve learned over the past couple of years, the guidelines I follow to make sure my home-improvement projects are productive and fun instead of something I dread.
I believe these nine “rules” have helped me embrace the do-it-yourself mindset :P TAGEND
Read the instructions. This point is obvious enough for some folks that it ought not even be listed. But for others, this is a vital first step. I know too many people who rush into DIY projects without bothering to read the directions that come with the portions, tools, or kits that they’re employing. Instruction sheets and handbooks are tedious, yes, and they don’t always make sense when you read them without context, but they also offer a vital framework for the project you’re about to undertake. Don’t skip this step! Tap your social network. While you may have never tackled a particular project, you probably have household or friends who’ve done something similar in the past. Draw on their experience and expertise. Ask questions. Seek advice. While replacing our kitchen faucet, I texted Mr. Money Mustache for help. When installing my car stereo, I asked my brother lots of questions.( He’s an audio nerd .) When Kim and I work in the yard, I often ask my ex-wife for advice. And, of course, I’m not shy about posting to Facebook to draw on the power of the hivemind. Practice patience. DIY projects can be long and tedious. They can be frustrating. When I replaced our kitchen faucet, I was stymied from the start. The space was small. Tools didn’t work or didn’t fit. We had schemes with the neighbours that put a time limit on the project. The old me would have been angry and irritable. The new me stayed soothe. I forced myself to practise patience, to pause and think about the situation from a variety of angles. I had to induce three journeys to the hardware store. Ultimately, my patience paid off. I replaced the faucet and stimulated it next door in time to watch the big game. Be methodical. Another reason DIY projects been applied to frustrate me stemmed from my absence of organization. As I disassembled things, I set them in a common piling. When it came time to put things back together, I was lost. Nowadays, I’m smarter. I set small parts in ziploc suitcases and label the containers so I know what they are and where they go. If it’s not obvious what large proportions are for, I label them too. At each stage of the project, I take photos with my phone so that I have a reference when I set things back together. I take notes in the manual to provide clarity in the future. Then I store the manuals in a drawer. Being methodical induces the process so much easier.
Think outside the box. Sometimes you’ll encounter situations where the instructions don’t apply. Normal solutions don’t run. When this happens, you’ll have to be creative. You’ll need to think outside the box. Utilizing the kitchen faucet as an example again , none of the recommended methods would work to remove the old faucet. It was stuck, and there was no space working in cooperation with typical tools. In the end, I had to purchase a Dremel and cut into the collar, then hammer at it for five minutes before it came loose. It took a long time( and was frustrating ), but it ran. Decide on rules for buying tools. The unfortunate reality of DIY projects is that they often require specialized tools. When I replaced the kitchen faucet, I needed a basin wrench. Then I required a Dremel. When Kim and I re-seeded our lawn, we needed an aerator. Sometimes it constructs sense to simply buy the tool( s) you need.( I know I’ll use the Dremel again in the future .) Other days, it stimulates much more sense to borrow or rent.( I’m never going to need a $1500 aerator again, so I rented .) Do things right. It’s seducing to cut corners when you do projects yourself. It’s tempting to skip steps, to not work to code, to do the minimum required to get things running right now. Please, do your future self a favor: Do things right the first time. Yes, it takes longer and costs more, but it also means you shouldn’t have to repeat the project. Plus, it’s nicer for whoever inherits your work. The folks who owned our house before us seemed to live by the motto,” Why do something right when you can do it half-ass ?” Kim and I inherited a stack of shitty fixings that have made life miserable for the past two years. When you’re stuck, take a break. One reason I’ve avoided DIY projects in the past is that I unavoidably get stuck. I reach a tricky and/ or confusing step and become thwarted. This used to be a disheartening deal-breaker. Now, though, I accept this as part of the process. When I do get stuck, I take it as a sign to slow down — or stop. I go do something else for a while. I do more research on the interwebs. I re-read the instructions. I contact somebody I know who has done a similar project. I devote time for the frustration to fade, then return to the project with fresh eyes. Have fun. Most importantly, enjoy the process. Accept it for what it is. Yes, you’ll have moments of annoyance. Yes, it sucks to build repeated trip-ups to the hardware store. Yes, most tasks take two or three times longer than anticipated. Once you agree that this is part of what DIY is all about, you’ll have a better stance and be better able to enjoy the work instead of resent it. Plus, remind yourself that each time you tackle a task yourself, you’re constructing a library of knowledge that can be applied to future undertakings.
Here’s another guideline: Keep the end in mind.
Home repair and home improvement can be annoying because there are other things you’d rather be doing. You could be hanging out with friends. You could be reading a book. You could be playing a game. The last thing you want to do is replace a broken window.
I’ve learned to consider the reason I’m doing the run. I know that when I replace the kitchen faucet, we’ll no longer have to worry about leaks. Plus, we’ll have a better, most attractive fixture. After we’ve expended six hours staining the deck, we’ll get years of pleasure from the space. Once I build out the writing studio, I’ll have an ideal space to work in.
Don’t focus on the drudgery of the moment. Remind yourself of the ultimate payoff.
Choosing DIY Just for Fun
Last weekend, I tackled a DIY project for fun( gasp ). I installed a car stereo.
Three months ago, I bought a 1993 Toyota pickup for projects around our little acre. Fittingly for the epoch, the truck came with a videotape deck. Unfortunately, I don’t own any videotapes. I purged the last of them over a decade ago.
Still, I couldn’t defy an indulgence.” I wonder if you can get Taylor Swift on cassette ,” I thought to myself. I checked Amazon. Sure enough, if you’re dumb and ascertained like I am, you can order Reputation on cassette for 30 bucks. So I did.
When the videotape came, I was disappointed to discover that while the radio ran fine, the tape player was busted. What to do? What to do? Should I write off the T Swift tape as a $30 loss? Or should I go all in, take the risk of buying a new videotape deck?
I think you all know the( irrational) course of action I chose.
I discovered a $70 videotape deck on Amazon and ordered it. Last weekend, as a birthday present to myself, I spent an entire day installing the thing — despite having no clue what I was doing.
The project was fun!( Frustrating but fun .)
I got to take apart the truck’s front console, puzzle out the messed up wiring( a previous proprietor had spliced new speakers incorrectly ), connect the new videotape deck, then set everything back together. On my drive to work at the box factory Monday morning, I cranked up the Taylor Swift. The dog was unimpressed but I had fun.
