The Ogre

I am thoroughly enjoying “Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi” - known in English as “Bed and Breakfast for Spirits.”  I’m a sucker for characters getting spirited away, after all.  

The series started with an unsettling premise.  The main character, a young woman named Aoi, is taken to the spirit realm - the world of Ayakashi  -to be  Ōdanna ‘s bride.  He is the ogre who runs an inn named  Tenjin'ya.  Apparently her late grandfather was in debt to the inn, so it only makes sense that she is taken to settle that, right?  Yeah, she didn’t think so either.  So I kept watching, entranced with the beautiful setting, the kindness of Ginji, the nine-tailed fox who first helps her, and Aoi’s strong determination to pay off her family debt in her own way.  

As the series has progressed, Ōdanna has grown on me.  It was initially very difficult to overlook his kidnapping and demand for marriage.  His early gifts felt like bribery.  We have to remember that the spirit world has different rules than our human realm, of course, but it’s problematic all the same because we viewers are human.  The romantic tension becomes unsettling.  Ōdanna shows Aoi affection, and becomes increasingly... charming?  Are we also falling under his spell?

I think  Ōdanna is realizing that Aoi is more than a delicious smelling human, more than a commodity to settle a debt.  Where he appeared forceful in the first episode, he has recently shown genuine support for Aoi, her values, and interests.  He goes out of his way to get her ingredients for her hobby and, in the spirit realm, career of cooking.  He shows her trust and gives her access to anything she might need.  Now that she’s far away from the protection of his inn, he continues to watch over her and assist her.  He could kidnap her again, even admitting that he wants to, but he knows that would upset her.

As the story is ongoing, mysteries remain.   I continue to admire Aoi for her perseverance and kindness in the face of several obstacles, but  Ōdanna is not the monster I originally feared him to be.  He’s turned out to be quite a resourceful ally.  I never thought I’d find an ogre to be so charming!

Standing 1 inch tall is a chibi Odanna-inspired charm from Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi (Bed and Breakfast for Spirits)! It's standing on top of a US quarter. This was a gift to a friend who introduced the anime to me. I think I made this 2(?) years ago and didn't get around to posting it until now 😅

Aoi's grandpa last wishes was to eat #aoitsubaki cooking as his last meal if he were to die but since his death came so suddenly he was not able to. Suzuran wanted Aoi to offer the #lunchbox to him. After a hardy arguement between #akatsuki and #suzuran the #spiderdemon siblings, akatsuki lost all his demon energy and turned into a small #youkai Looks like when these demons lose energy they turn into the weaker version of themselves Aoi's dishes provide some kind of energy whenever #youkai eats them. #aoitsubaki declined to be the #brideofanogre so in order to pay off her grandfather's debt, #ginji the #foxdemon suggested running a restaurant next to the Inn. I watched #shokugekinosoma and I love watching the #anime and the food but their food and the taste reaction is too dramatized. I really like the why this anime portrays their food and character's reaction. It's simple.
