How to Build a Fabric Stash without Breaking the Bank
Fabric can be expensive but it doesn’t have to be. If you are not stuck on Name Brands or Specialty Fabric Store Exclusives here are some ways to build your fabric stash without costing an arm and a leg. I have made many beautiful quilts using various fabrics from various supplies. And I believe that the quality is not just in the fabric you use but also in your stitch work and seams sizes. If your seams are less than a ¼” they will not hold (personally I prefer to use a ½” seam allowance). If you are not securing your thread ends, your stitch work is going to come undone. So be sure to watch these things too.
Look for fabric at your local Thrift Store (Goodwill, Value Village, etc.)
I have found some wonderful fabrics in various sizes, notions, storage items and more at my local Thrift Stores. I have even found unfinished quilt tops that I have brought home and added a backing to then quilted. Remember that almost any size fabric remnant can be added to other remnants to make some wonderful scrappy quilts so save your own remnants after making a quilt, you may be able to use it later in another quilt.
Look for local Fabric Sales held by Quilting Guilds in Your Area.
We have 2 near me every summer. One charges $2 per pound for any fabric. The second one charges $2 per yard for any fabric. Both also sell batting, notions, books, machines, tools, and more.
Look for fabric on Facebook Marketplace, Nextdoor and other sites.
I sell extra fabric on Marketplace and Nextdoor. I have also found several ladies near me selling fabric that I have purchased. And some I have purchased with shipping to me.
Look for older 100% Cotton Sheets at your local Thrift Stores.
Back in the 1800’s and early 1900’s, Quilts were not show pieces. They were real functional blankets that were made from any and all fabrics they could get, usually used clothing. I think there is no reason why we cannot still do that instead of buying expensive fabrics. I have often used clothing, sheets, curtains, and other linens to make some wonderful, usable quilts. And there are some wonderful patterns you can use for quilts in bedsheets from the 1980’s and 1990’s. Note: I always wash anything from a Thrift Store before I use it.
Watch for Fabric Sales and Coupons for Joanns, Hobby Lobby and other Fabric & Craft Stores.
I know some quilters believe that the fabric from Joanns & Hobby Lobby is poor quality but I have not found any bad fabric from these stores. We do not have a “Quilting” store close to me and because I’m handicapped, I will not drive an hour or more just to buy expensive fabric. If I did that, I wouldn’t be able to afford to quilt. I will also buy fabric from Walmart but I am more careful with my selection there as most fabric at Walmart is good but I have had one or two pieces that I felt were poorer quality.
Watch for Fabric Sales and Coupons for your Local Quilt Shop.
Quilt shops will also have occasional sales and/or coupons so if you prefer to shop at these locations take notice of when they have sales. Also ask if they ever give discounts to seniors or military.
Use New or Older Clothing.
I have made a lot of beautiful Memorial Quilts from a loved one’s clothing and T-Shirt quilts. I will use jeans, work shirts, uniforms, flannel, cotton, polyester and even some knits. These can be a little trickier to work with because they are often stretchy fabrics but they will add a wonderful texture and visual variance to your quilts. I recently found a pair of cotton pants with Mickey Mouse on them. I fell in love with them because they were so colorful, and I love bold colors. I found several other cotton fabrics that matched the colors in the Mickey pants and made a bold colorful quilt!
Rethink Your Backing Fabric
No one ever said your quilt backing had to be all New Cotton. You can use Fleece, Flannel or Bed Sheets as well. On many occasions I have found some wonderful fleece blankets on clearance and used these for my quilt backing. Joanns right now has a great clearance sale on Flannel fabric. The best part about using some of these is that you can get then in a wider width so you may be able to make your backing in all one piece instead of 2 or more like when using regular cotton (unless you want your backing to be in various colors/patterns). You can also use new or older cotton bed sheets for a quilt backing. Again, you can make your quilt backing in one solid piece with a sheet!
Check the Clearance Section for Your Favorite On-Line Stores
I have several on-lines stores that I love to shop from (e-Quilter, Missouri Star, etc.) but sometimes they can be expensive so I always check the clearance section of these stores. There are times I will find some beautiful fabrics on clearance so will purchase it then look for matching piece everywhere else so I can get the best deals. Also check for on-line sales from Joanns, Hobby Lobby and other on-lines stores that sell fabric and/or sheets.
Check Out Your Local Garage, Moving and Estate Sales
I have found some of the best deals at moving and estate sales because often the seller is willing to bargain with you. I once found an estate sale where a family was selling off all their mother’s quilting and sewing items because she had passed away and none of then sewed. There was more fabric and notions than I would have used in a year so I found lots of thread and items I purchased at a great price.
Note on Batting
I know that many quilters believe that the only batting you should use is expensive cotton batting. I disagree. There are many forms of batting. Cotton/Poly blends, Polyester, and Fleece. I love cotton batting but cotton will break down quicker than polyester and I want my quilts to last a lifetime so for most of my quilts I actually use Polyester more often than not. I have taken the backing off many older quilts to do repair work and the cotton batting inside was all balled up and a real mess.
Now when I am doing the Quilt-as-you-Go method I use a Fleece batting. The fleece can be cut into smaller pieces, fabric added to the top and then sewn back together to make wonderful quilts. And the batting doesn’t get stuck in my machine.
Shop Around for your batting to find the best deals. Sometimes Joanns has a sale on batting but the best price I have found so far has been Walmart on-line. I can buy a 96” x 9 yard Bolt of Poly Batting for just $30 on Walmart on-line. This bolt will make 4+ quilts depending on the size of the quilt and I will have lots of left overs for smaller projects like pillows, etc. For me the best part is that because it’s 96” wide, I don’t have to piece together my batting before I can sandwich my quilt!

@mayakern OK so I have a PLAN to write a nice and helpful review of your skirts, but I honestly have no idea if I'll actually be able to follow through anytime soon or if it'll just languish in my head for the rest of time, so this is a PLACEHOLDER nice and helpful review that just says HER SKIRTS ARE V. NICE, IF PLUS SIZE AND ON FENCE HIGHLY RECOMMEND DO BUY
#this is in fact me tricking myself into writing a helpful review#by putting the stuff in the tags#these skirts are a+++#i'd been looking at the sunflowers skirt longingly for months#and then it was on sale and i was everything is terrible i want cheerful sunflowers#and i got it#wore it#and immediately ran into the problem of wanting to wear it every day#(side note i now have purchased three additional skirts)#for the texture-sensitive people such as myself! important info:#material feels like bamboo cotton like you can get in sheets#so if you don't know what that feels like and if it's an ok texture you can go to a store that sells bed linens and find a sample#n.b. it's not exactly the same probably but it feels close enough for me#and i am . notoriously picky about textures#the skirts are full enough that even though the material is soft and light#it hangs heavily enough to not show off anything you're wearing underneath#and disguises that you've got stuff in your pockets#even if your pockets are FULL#(and these are BIG POCKETS)#the sizes overlap - I got the larger size of the ones i fit into#and i like the fit but did find that my pockets will start pulling them down a bit#which is less of a problem if both pockets are full#and more of a problem if it's just one pocket#so i have now ordered the size down as well#anyways yes highly recommend#yes expensive but also! not actually THAT expensive!#because this stuff is quality??#like i buy shit from torrid which is somewhat cheaper#but also will start falling apart within six months if not sooner#and i can tell that when it arrives because of the stitching etc

Is it just me, or has it become a huge headache to buy ANYTHING lately? Half of everything is cheap crap, and the other half is prohibitively expensive, with nothing in between. Google searches return lists that all have the same promoted Amazon links. Even places like eBay are packed with resellers of Amazon/Walmart products. It's so frustrating!
#erin rambles#this post brought to you by me trying to find bedding for my kid's new bed#apparently you can't buy 100% cotton sheets without dropping like 100 bucks these days#i did eventually find some stuff i liked#but geez

I found this plum coloured satin sheet in an op shop and bought it, turns out it's 100% silk satin and from a brand named Hermes.
I had never heard of them, but mum had. She said they're a luxury brand mostly known for their scarves and bags, so I looked it up. I couldn't find any sheets (I think it's actually pretty old so must have been a previous thing they offered), but what I DID find...
This weird blanket. How much do you think this blanket costs? Take a wild guess
Did you guess $1, $1.5 thousand? Well you'd be wrong, try $10, 485!!!!
I mean it is cashmere, which has a complex method of collection, but the item itself isn't even hand made, it's done by machine. Also it's very ugly (to me) and mostly white! Imagine spilling something on that!
But what REALLY got me was the fact that they make some stuff for dogs. They also make horse stuff (but of course they do, plus their emblem is a horse), but I didn't bother looking at that stuff since horse things are insanely expensive anyway.
But things for dogs. How much do you think this red plastic dog frisbee costs?
$350. For a plastic dog frisby that pooch will slobber all over and chew to bits.
Even more wild to me is buying a leash that costs $1, 520!! For a leash! So many dogs I've known chew on them, and it would literally take a dog half a minute to destroy that! Why!?
Rich people are WILD
#tossing up whether I should have a dress made out of the sheet considering the quailty of the material#or if I should just use it on my bed as intended in summer#I also got a massive green checked gingham tablecloth and apparently that is pure cotton and was made in Portugal#got an eye for fabric after like 15 years of op shopping I guess

I know I'm becoming an adult because now sometimes i get bored and just ???? Load up fucking laundry.
#red rambles#the big difference there is that in every other housing situation I've ever been in laundry is constantly being run so me spontaneously#deciding to do MY laundry is always some sort of production#the college laundromats are always full and my dad does an unbelievable amount of laundry because of how many cotton sheets he has to go#through in a day for his job (like ten)#and also my dad is VERY bad at sleeping (much like yours truly) and because I am nocturnal if i do ANYTHING at ANY FUCKING TIME when he is#asleep and he sleeps badly or wakes up at any point it's my fault despite like. the fact that he does this when i'm not home too#so if i run the laundry later than 7pm i'm sabotaging his work day and shit#here we are three people who don't do that much laundry so the washing machines are usually empty#so i can just wash my shit when i feel like it#also tbf it needed to happen. i think i used the wrong dryer sheets so i keep waking up like 'ough i thibk i have couvid' because my throat#and my sinuses hurt so so so bad lmao#but then i walk around for 1.5 minutes and drink anything and i'm fine. so it's just the particles in my bef#bed#so i'm doing my sheets

Less than 48 hours since ordering and the shaggy comforter cover set has already arrived. In the second image you can see how much darker this actually-sage-green thing is than the supposedly-sage-green fuzzy blanket. Also the colour difference between artificial light (left) and sunlight (right).
Shaggy thing (which looks amusingly and mildly distressingly like I bagged and skinned a very large muppet for its fabric) is still perking up from being compressed during shipping. I’ll probably run it through the dryer on low heat cycle to fluff it up properly (and blow off any loose bits of fibre) before using it. I figure if I don’t insert a comforter in it, I can get some use out of it as an extra-thick and fluffy blanket before it goes into storage until next fall.
Meanwhile the sheet set only just finally set out from Salt Lake City in the US southwest yesterday. The quilt set should be arriving tomorrow. The two remaining pillows (coming from China) passed through Toronto on Monday, so they could probably arrive here any time from now until Friday.
So unless the sheet set makes a super-fast journey it’ll probably be some time next week before I can put everything together on the bed. Even so, I am excite.
#Moss Bed#I am so looking forward to using all this new bedding#It's going to be stupidly cute once it's all put together#I still want to get some more throw pillows for it#And an amanita mushroom plushie#But they can wait#I already spent more than originally planned on this#The sheet set I liked most was about twice the price of the next cheapest option#(Four times the cheapest option)#But cotton-linen vs cotton vs polyester#And I already had most of it on order before deciding#That I really should get a quilt in the same sage green colour range#Because my existing green quilt is not in the right range or saturation level#And would stick out like a sore thumb#Man I love being able to splurge once in a while#Instead of (sometimes literally) counting pennies for every purchase

I was more like this at age 20; I still had the health and energy to go shopping and make crafts to enhance my living space. By 30, health issues were rapidly approaching the point where I wasn't going to have the ability to care about stuff like that anymore.
I'm turning 30 this month, and for some reason have become suddenly interested in material possessions. like what if,,,,,,,,my couch was nice. what if my sheets were nice. is this what happens to you??
#the only not nice sheets i ever had were ones that bragged about being a higher thread count#they just felt slimy to me#and too heavy#but i had really liked the pattern and hoped they would feel better after washing#they didn't#i like low thread count#more breathable#i found a set once where they feel just like a nice woven cotton shirt#none of that percale#it was an ugly color plaid almost a check#but that one i bought for the feel of them#you can tell how warm this winter has been#because for the first time since i was a kid i have lightweight summer sheets on my bed#instead of flannels#and i'm more than warm enough#nice to me would be an old light enough to move (pine?) bedroom set#my horrible bought new one is all pressed wood and all the drawer catches broke#so when you pull them out more than an inch they fall on the floor#but i don't think we had any thrift stores around here when i picked out that one#there wasn't really anywhere to look for that sort of thing except what they had in the penneys catalog

Mattress Protector guards your mattress, guarantees your rest
The quest for a completely restorative night's sleep goes beyond a good mattress. It is an overall approach, the symphony of all components working in perfect harmony to create a sanctuary of tranquillity. The source of unparalleled comfort in the discovery of mattress protector and their importance. A mattress is one of the significant investments, and it needs proper care. Liquids and dust mites, along with allergens, penetrate inside the mattress core and might even pose health risks. Barren of spills and stain barriers, this layer also forms a protective shield around a mattress. Our waterproof bed protector features a specific type of surface treatment whereby water is repelled or doesn't penetrate through while at the same time being liquid-repellent, allowing spilled liquids to stay upon it and be cleaned effectively and easily. While defending your mattress, at the same time, protecting its lifespan for years will provide you with an optimum sleep experience. Apart from spill protection, a quality waterproof mattress protector, such as ours, will offer an extra layer of dust mite and allergen protection. Dust mites are tiny creatures that inhabit warm, damp environments.
