Detention VII.V: A Brush of Magic
[Beckett Harrington x Emma Carlyle Masterlist]
Pairing: Beckett Harrington x Emma Carlyle (F!MC) Book: The Elementalists (early in book one) Word Count: ~ 700 Rating/Warnings: general, no warnings (grumpy/sunshine) A/N: This is part of my Detention series at the beginning of TE1 and my Stolen Moments: brushing hair back series.
Synopsis: Emma tracks down a particularly mischievous book, while Beckett gets caught in their path.
Tumblr media
Emma's brow knitted together in determination, her gaze narrowing on a particular mischievous edition of The Enchanted Pixie Scrolls. She tiptoed through the stacks, trying to hide in the shadows. No matter how quiet or how stealthy she was, the book swooped and twirled in the air, taunting her at every turn. If she hadn't known better, she would have thought there were actual pixies inside, laughing at her dismay. The thought lingered a moment as she considered it...it couldn't be, could it?
She shook her head, turning her attention back to her quest. It didn't really matter. The end result was the same; she needed to reshelve that book before she could leave detention for the day. Her gaze swept over the space. "Now, where did you go?"
Airy giggles floated behind her, the corner of the hard cover poking her in the back. She spun quickly, lunging toward the book. Her fingers brushed against the book's cool leather spine, but it fluttered away. "Get back here!"
She dodged left and right, avoiding other books and students, tracking the elusive book through the library. A playful smirk pulled at her lips. She shouldn't. It probably wouldn't even work... but what if it did?
Too late to turn back now.
With careful consideration, she leaped forward, a quick spell slipping from her lips as the floating books in the aisle came together, creating something resembling floating stairs. She tried not to waste time thinking about Beckett's horror if he saw her stepping on books. He was already wound so tight it might push him too far.
Each book shifted under her weight, her stride wobling under the uneven stairs; however, she was too far committed to give up now.
She lept up one more level, then jumped forward, extending her arm just as the book attempted to flit away again. "Oh, no, you don't!" This time her efforts were rewarded, and her hand clasped around the hard front cover of the book. Emma's added weight caused the book to drop...fast. Emma struggled to hold onto the book as it fought to be free. She quickly mumbled a spell, the air swirling around them, slowing but not stopping their descent.
"Watch it!" Beckett growled, trying to step to the side, but it was too late.
Emma and the book landed with a thud right on top of one Becket Harrington, his now trademark grumpy scowl growing.
"I got the book!" Emma declared proudly, lying across his ches. Her bright eyes filled with her accomplihsment as her gaze met his, not noticing how close they were.
"Good for you."
"Oh, don't pretend you're not at least a little bit impressed."
"You seem to be congratulating yourself sufficiently already."
Emma rolled her eyes as she eased herself off of him. "You don't need to say it. Your cute flushing freckled cheeks tell me all I need to know."
Despite his protest, the color only grew deeper at her words.
Emma ran her hand over his broad shoulders and chest, smoothing his blazer as he stood beside her. "There, all better. Not a hair out of—" Her words paused as she noticed a stray strand of his brown hair hanging over his forehead. Her fingers gathered the offending lock, brushing it back over his head. His hair was softer than she expected. Her fingers lingered, raking gingerly through his silky hair.
His eyes closed as he leaned into her touch. The frown on his face softened, giving way to something she might even consider a smile. The pair drifted closer, their faces only a breath away.
"Emma," her name slipped from his lips as his eyes met hers. He leaned forward, closing the gap until something smacked against their chests.
The book, still clutched in Emma's free hand, flapped between them, breaking the moment.
Beckett cleared his throat. "We should get that back where it belongs before—"
Emma cut him off before he could continue his thought. "—before you break your no-kissing rule and have to admit you like me." Her brow rose playfully.
She expected him to protest, his ears reddening, betraying his words, but he didn't. He paused before her. His cool grey eyes filled with rare openness. With careful precision, his long fingers gathered a loose curl of her hair, tucking it behind her ear. "Just returning the favor."
Without another word, he turned. "This way," he directed, leading them to where the book belonged.

Beckett Harrington 🤝 Thomas Hunt
Both leaving a party early to learn more and explore their interests (and get away from annoying people)
I'm starting to remember why I chose Beckett and it only 50% had to do with Beckett

Little Stars Brought to Earth
[Beckett Harrington x Emma (MC) Masterlist]
Characters: Beckett Harrington, Emma Carlyle (MC)
Notes: firefly – @choicesmonthlychallenge ; night sky (moodboard) - @choicesweeklychallenge
Setting: Early in TE Book One, after an evening of detention in the library.
☆  ☆  ☆  ☆   ☆   ☆   ☆
“Emma?”
Though quiet against the cool grass, his footsteps had given him away before his voice.
“I thought you were heading back to the dorm?”
“And I thought you were staying late to study.” She turned toward him, her eyes glistening under the full moon.
“What are you doing out here?” Beckett took a step closer, his gaze falling to the mason jar in her hands.
She continued a little further into the field, moving nearer to the treeline. He followed behind, watching her movements. “When I was younger, I always believed in magic.”
“It would make sense that part of your brain recognized your latent magick abilities and helped you believe.”
Her smile spread wider, her head shaking slightly to the sides. That wasn’t what she had meant. She knelt lower to the ground, holding the jar open in front of her.
“Emma?” He watched curiously, not understanding what she was doing.
Fireflies surrounded them in a sea of blinking lights, flashing brilliantly in the night.
“I didn’t mean magick… I meant magic, the kind that doesn’t actually exist but if you hope and wish hard enough, you believe it does, like unicorns.”
“Unicorns are real.”
“Okay, yes, that is a poor example. Tuneless people believe in unicorns and fairies and other things, especially as children, but as they grow older, they’re told those things don’t exist… when I was younger, I used to think fireflies were magic, like little stars brought to earth just for me. I spent so many nights chasing after them, catching them in jars like this, and marveling at their beauty.”
“They’re just insects. It's simply a chemical reaction,” his voice trailed away.
“I know. But does something have to be magick to be magical?”
“I trust that is rhetorical, otherwise the answer is yes.”
She leaned forward then quickly clasped the lid tightly on the jar. “Gotcha!”
Two fireflies fluttered inside; the jar glowing just a bit under their soft light.
“I think they’re magic. Magic doesn’t have to be proven. Sometimes you just have to trust and believe in the possibility of something.”
He opened his mouth to disagree, but the light on her face gave him pause. Maybe just once, being right wasn’t worth it.
Crickets and frogs sang in the background as the two of them watched the tiny bits of magic dance in the jar. The flickering of the fireflies illuminated their faces.
“Now what?”
“Now—” Her thumb traced over the side of the jar. “We let them go. They live only a couple of weeks, just long enough to mate and reproduce. Their magic doesn’t belong caged in a jar. They deserve to be free.”
“Thank you for helping me believe in magic.” Her voice was quiet as she expressed her gratitude, wishing them goodbye. “I may never have found my way here without you. You taught me to believe in the impossible and that sometimes the impossible can become possible.”
She watched her fireflies flutter back over the field, blinking brightly in the cool night air, like the tiny stars she remembered as a child.
He hadn’t understood her excitement over a common insect before, but now, with their light reflecting in her eyes, he was starting to understand a little better. “May I walk you back to the dorms?”
“I’d like that.”
The path leading out of the field narrowed, forcing them closer together. Her fingers brushed against his, a rosy warmth spreading over her cheeks. He hadn’t pulled away, if anything, his cool grey eyes seemed softer now.
Her pulse quickened, her lip twisted as she bit the corner. Her fingers flirted again with his, but this time, when she pulled back, she entwined her pinky with his.
They walked wordlessly back to the dorms, a matching blush on their faces hidden by the night, their little fingers locked together.

Detention XIII: What did you do?
[Beckett Harrington x Emma Carlyle Masterlist]
Tumblr media
Characters: Beckett Harrington, Emma Carlyle (MC)
Prompt: Gold – @julychoiceschallenge (sorry it’s a bit late)
Notes: This takes place during the beginning of The Elementalists Book 1 when Beckett and MC have detention in the library, each part in this series can be read as a standalone.
☆  ☆  ☆  ☆   ☆   ☆   ☆
“Do you feel that?” Emma looked around, spinning in a circle trying to pinpoint where it was coming from.
“No,” Beckett mumbled, barely acknowledging her question. “Focus.”
A warm breath tingled her arms, sending a shiver down her spine as goosebumps erupted on her skin. “Seriously, you don’t feel that?”
“Stop trying to look for trouble. Focus on what you’re supposed to be doing. We have 2 days left and we are finally done. I know it’s difficult for you, but please for once in your life, don’t go looking for trouble,” Beckett suggested, refusing to look at her and be pulled in by whatever trouble she was chasing today.
“It’s like you really don’t know me at all,” she teased. She walked up and down the aisle, her fingers grazing the spines of the books. “Where are you?” She asked searching for the source of whatever was washing over her.
“Do I dare ask what you’re doing?” He rubbed his fingers between his eyes. He had never once had a headache in the library before, but somehow he found himself increasingly plagued by them.
She shrugged playfully and turned down the next aisle.
“Not this time,” Beckett stated, more to himself than for Emma’s benefit. She had a habit of finding trouble and he wasn’t going to follow her, not this time, not with only two days left. The semester was well on its way and he had to make more time for studies.
“Woah!” Emma marveled, before sprinting off further into the library, chasing a round orb of light. “Hey, get back here!”
He listened as her voice and footsteps drifted further away until they were gone. He breathed a soft sigh. It was for the best. He continued shelving the books, his grasp around the spines becoming tighter with each book. He groaned, hating himself for what he was about to do.
“Emma?” He walked down a few aisles heading to where he last heard her voice. “Emma! Where are you?”
“Over here!”
His mouth fell open as he stopped in his tracks. “What did you do?”
Small orbs of light seemingly streamed from nowhere all around her. He could feel the heat radiating off of them, warming his face from where he stood.
“Nothing!” She noticed his glaring, snooty face. “Honestly, I didn’t do this.”
“It looks like sun magick to me,” Beckett scolded, crossing his arms over his chest. “You’re going to get us in trouble. Make it stop!”
“I can’t!” She moved to meet him, pulling him with her into the center of the lights. “Just come here!”
“What? Why?” He feigned to fight against her. His skin warming under the glowing lights. “They feel like sunlight.”
“I didn’t do it!” She repeated. “But look.” She poked one of the round balls of light and it popped sending even smaller bursts of light shimmering downward. “It’s so cool.”
Beckett held out his hand, letting one of the orbs fall into it, the light dissolving into his skin as a soothing, comforting feeling swept over him. “What is this?” He turned his face up, trying to find the source of the mysterious lights. He had never seen anything like it before.
Emma drifted closer to Beckett as the orbs danced around them. “You’re smiling,” she noted looking up at him.
“No, I’m not,” he protested, trying to turn down the corner of his lips, but it was impossible as the golden drops warmed him as they fell.
“Beckett?”
His gaze shifted down to her, his freckled cheeks flushing as he realized how close she was.
“Do you feel it now?” Her eyes glistened, reflecting the lights around them.
He nodded, memorizing how she looked right then. It’s not like he hadn’t recognized that she was pleasing to look at, it just hadn’t mattered to him before; but, right now, he couldn’t take his eyes off of her. “Yes.”
Their faces drifted closer, pulled together before either of them had time to think of something clever to say.
“Are you sur–”
He quieted her question as his lips brushed over hers, his hands on her hips pulling her closer.
Her mouth parted for his, as the lights grew brighter enveloping them into its brilliance and heat. She wasn't sure if the warmth flowing through her was from the unexplained magic or his embrace, but she was certain she didn't want to lose either of them.
The lights popped, bursting into tiny shimmering droplets that fell around them, like a waterfall of gold glitter, but without the mess, as each dissolved into the air before ever hitting the ground.
Emma laughed breaking their kiss and turning into his chest. They both looked up, the remaining flecks of light floating over them tickling their skin with its warmth and comfort.
The lights dimmed and the library came into focus once more, all that was left of their mysterious lights was a fleck of gold on her face. Beckett softly brushed his thumb over her cheek, collecting it. Unlike the others, it didn’t fade away when touched. He held his finger out in front of her. “Make a wish.”
“Okay,” she agreed, closing her eyes and thinking for a moment. When she opened them again, she blew the last drop of magic off his finger, sending it floating back into the air where it had once come.
Beckett began walking back to where they were supposed to be. “Are you coming?”
Emma looked around once more, nothing remained of their waterfall of light. She nodded her smile fading slightly, already missing the magic.
“Before we get in trouble, if you please.” He held out his hand in her direction.
She took it quickly, her fingers entwining with his, as she followed him. Her smile seeped back over her face, maybe not all the magic was lost after all.

Detention XII: reflection
[Beckett Harrington x Emma (MC) Masterlist]
Tumblr media
Characters: Beckett Harrington, Emma Carlyle (MC)
Prompt: Wander – @choicesjunechallenge ;
Notes: It’s been a while since I wrote Beckett… I know this isn’t the best, but I’m still working through a creative block. 🤷
This takes place during the beginning of The Elementalists Book 1 when Beckett and MC have detention in the library, each part in this series can be read as a standalone.
☆  ☆  ☆  ☆   ☆   ☆   ☆
“Emma!” Beckett yelled, quickly throwing up his hands and matching her spell.
“What? AHHHH!” Emma dodged the wave of books that hurled in her direction. She had been guiding them back to their shelves before her mind began to wander.
He calmed the books, sending each back to their proper spot. “Are you trying to get our sentence extended?!”
She shook her head as if coming out of a trance. “No… I’m sorry… Thank you!”
“What happened?” Beckett questioned moving closer to her.
Her gaze lingered on an ornate mirror on the wall. “I… I don’t know… I thought… I thought I saw… it was just a flash…” Her mind drifted back to the reflection again. It wasn’t the first time she had seen it. It was her face but it wasn’t… and that hair…
“Emma?” His stern expression fell away. He took her hand, his thumb brushing over her knuckles. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah...yes!” She answered hesitantly, turning into him. “Do the mirrors here play tricks?”
“How do you mean?”
“Do they show you... Never mind.” She breathed deeply, attempting to put a smile on her face. “I think I just need some sleep. Sorry! I appreciate your help.”
She turned to move away, but he pulled her back to him. “You can tell me anything, you know that, right?” He reached up cupping her face. “I do care about you.”
“What was that? I don’t think I heard you.” Emma’s forced smile relaxed, her eyes lighting up in response.
“You heard me just fine,” he answered with a raise of his brow. “Don’t push it!”
Her arms wrapped around his neck, as she leaned up on her tiptoes. “You know what just might help and make me feel better?” Her warm breath teasing over his neck.
His signature blush painted across his freckled cheeks. “I neither recall you winning another bet nor proving me wrong again.”
She bit the corner of her lip, her eyes shifting to his mouth. Thoughts of the reflection had all but faded back in the recesses of her mind as her stomach fluttered with anticipation. He had this way of making all worries seem distant when she was with him. “Are you sure you want to stick to those rules?”
Beckett’s head tilted to the side, his gaze challenging hers, trying to regain his confidence. His face inched closer to hers, the hair on his arm raising under his blazer at the thought of following through. His lips hovered just above hers as he struggled against himself. “Yes,” he breathed, his lips brushing softly over hers as he pulled away. “For now.”
Without another word, the two of them returned to their task, a rosy red color apparent across both their cheeks.

Detention VI
[Beckett Harrington x Emma (MC) Masterlist]
Tumblr media
Pairing: Beckett Harrington x Emma Carlyle (F!MC) Book: The Elementalists Rating: General
Synopsis: Emma is frustrated that she and Beckett have detention on Valentine’s Day.
This takes place during the beginning of The Elementalists Book 1, each part in this series can be read as a standalone.
☆  ☆  ☆  ☆   ☆   ☆   ☆
“UGH!” Emma groaned, hastily grabbing a book and shoving it into the shelf. “I can’t believe they’re making us work on Valentine’s Day. Like cleaning up the library couldn’t wait another day.”
Beckett continued with his task of reorganizing a row of books, unphased by her complaint.
“It really doesn’t bother you?” Emma questioned crossing her arms across her chest.
“It’s just another day,” Beckett shrugged. “You shouldn’t need a special day to remind you to tell someone you care about them.”
“Ugh!” Emma complained again. “That’s not the point.”
Beckett turned to Emma. “If you have somewhere else to be… go. I’ll cover for you.”
“Really? But, what about you?” Emma asked.
“Some of us actually enjoy the library,” Beckett replied taking a look around at the endless shelves and the flying books filled with knowledge just waiting to be learned. “I would be here anyway, just studying instead.”
“You’re nothing if not predictable,” Emma teased, her eyes softening as a smile spread across her face. “I guess there are worse places to be.”
“I meant it, Emma. If you have somewhere to be, or someone to be with, you should go,” Beckett insisted.
Emma sighed, her shoulders dropping. She shook her head. “There’s no one. It was more the principle of the thing.”
“Okay,” Beckett answered getting back to work, the corner of his lip turned up in amusement.
The two of them continued their detention shift in relative silence.
“And, done!” Emma announced the second their sentence ended for the day. “Time to go, Harrington!”
Beckett shelved one last book then moved toward Emma. He held out his hand, exposing an origami rose. The paper flower opened, blooming in front of her.
“That’s incredible,” Emma marveled. Her fingers grazed the fragile petals of the rose and it closed up again.
“Here,” Beckett took her hand and placed the flower in her palm. His hand supported hers below as he made the rose bloom once more in her hand. Beckett watched Emma’s eyes light up watching the simple action of the rose blooming over and over. His hand held hers as they drifted closer together sharing this small moment. It wasn’t until his cheeks warmed as he breathed in the scent of her lavender and rosemary shampoo that he realized how close they really were, mere inches apart. He quickly took a step back, dropping her hand.
Emma offered the flower back to him.
“Keep it,” Beckett suggested. “I hope it makes up for being stuck here on Valentine’s Day.”
“Thank you, Beckett.” Emma held the self-blooming flower in her hand. One day she would have to ask him how it worked; today, she just wanted to enjoy the simple magic of the unknown.

Detention X: Supposed to Be
[Beckett Harrington x Emma (MC) Masterlist]
Tumblr media
Characters: Beckett Harrington, Emma Carlyle (MC)
Notes: Confident – @choicesmarchchallenge ;
@choicesmcappreciation : Superior Student: Emma Carlyle (The Elementalists)
This takes place during the beginning of The Elementalists Book 1, each part in this series can be read as a standalone.
☆  ☆  ☆  ☆   ☆   ☆   ☆
Emma hummed softly as she almost danced jumping to catch a flying book. Stroking the spine gently as she placed it on the shelf, she cooed, “there you go, right back home. Doesn’t that feel nice?”
“Are you…” Beckett stared at her bright, wonder-filled eyes. “Are you actually enjoying this?”
Her gaze shifted as she watched the swirling books fluttering above her head like birds returning from spring. Without hesitation, Emma stopped the current and pulled the nearest book to her like a magnet with almost impossible ease. Her fingers caressed it tenderly. “I think I am? Is that wrong?”
“Your confidence has grown,” Beckett marveled watching her perfectly perform the spell he had taught her only a few days earlier.
“I would say my execution is far superior to yours now,” Emma winked over her shoulder, placing the book back on the shelf, listening to it purr lightly under her touch.
“Be careful, you know what they say about over-confidence,” Beckett retorted with a smirk.
“I don’t, but that does sound like a topic you would be familiar with,” Emma teased watching his eyebrows scrunch up as his gaze narrowed on her. She moved closer her fingers traipsing up the sleeve of his blazer, her voice hushed now. “You know you love spending alone time with me!”
“What are you implying?” Beckett’s freckled cheeks began to turn their signature shade of red at her words. He took a step back distancing himself from her.
“You’re adorable when you get all flustered!” She would never tire of how easy it was to make him nervous.
Emma closed her eyes, breathing in the earthy smell of the library, as she felt the warmth of her magick tingling throughout her, filling the empty space inside of her that she had long struggled to complete. “For the first time in my life, I feel like I am where I’m supposed to be. I finally feel like I’m where I belong. I spent a lifetime searching for this feeling. Now that I found it, detention, all of this, it’s perfect.”
“I can appreciate that.” Beckett nodded, turning back to his shelves. He understood. He had struggled with a similar feeling, never feeling like he lived up to the Harrington name, that something inside of him was missing. And, she wasn’t wrong. He really did enjoy their time together. She saw him as a person beyond his name which was something he never thought he’d find.

Detention XI: Returning
[Beckett Harrington x Emma (MC) Masterlist]

Characters: Beckett Harrington, Emma Carlyle (MC)
Notes: Blood – @choicesaprilchallenge ;

His eyes shifted between the two books on the table in front of him. Even with the laughter of students a few tables away and the flapping of the books soaring over his head, his focus was unwavering.
Her lips parted slightly as a smile grew. He was determined, brilliant, an overachiever through and through–he never stopped learning, never stopped pushing himself. To the outside that made him appear smug and cocky, unapproachable. But that's just what everyone else saw. Not her. Over the course of their time together, she'd learned he judged himself harder than anyone else because he never felt like he was enough. He lived in the shadow of his own expectations to live up to his sister. He failed to realize how spectacular he was just by being himself.
“Hey,” Emma offered softly as she took a seat opposite him. “I brought you a gift.”
Beckett’s gaze shifted to her quickly. “What? I didn’t–”
“Relax. I’m just returning this to you.” Emma reached in her bag and slid the copy of Magical Crimes of the Twenty-First Century she had borrowed across the table. “A day early, no scratches, tears, missing pages, or scorch marks.”
He breathed easier taking the book in his hands.
“I may have dog-eared one of the pages on blood magick though.” Emma bit her finger nervously. “Sorry!”
“EMMA!” His eyes widening in horror.
She couldn’t help it. That look on his face. The way he anxiously flipped through the book, one page at a time. It was perfect. “I’m just kidding. I’m not a monster. I’m just looking to find one.”
Beckett continued flipping through the book checking each page.
Emma stood to leave, pausing as she passed him. Her arm brushing against his. “You could continue examing that book... or, you can put it back and then we can go somewhere more private and I can tell you what I learned."
He snapped the book shut and turned toward her, his brow raised in curiosity.
“That’s what I thought,” Emma smirked. She helped Beckett gather the stacks of books he had in front of him, she imagined for future reading, in case the two he was currently engaged in wasn’t enough. “Thanks again. I couldn’t have done this without you.”
“No, you could not,” Beckett insisted.
“Modesty,” Emma laughed. “We’ll work on it!”

Detention IX: The Shade
[Beckett Harrington x Emma (MC) Masterlist]
Tumblr media
Characters: Beckett Harrington, Emma Carlyle (MC)
Notes: Murder – @choicesmarchchallenge
This takes place during the beginning of The Elementalists Book 1, each part in this series can be read as a standalone.
☆  ☆  ☆  ☆   ☆   ☆   ☆
“I’m sorry that someone trying to murder me is interfering with your studying!” Emma lashed out. She and Beckett dodged behind a large column outside the library in attempts of avoiding the Shade pursuing them. His library books still on the stairs where he dropped them as they retreated.
“I’m not saying it’s your fault…” Beckett complained. He peered quickly around the post to cast a spell toward the Shade. It screamed more loudly. However, its pace slowed. “But…”
“But what?” Emma interrupted as they ran down the empty hall, turning the corner abruptly.
“But, you certainly have a habit of finding yourself in trouble quite frequently. This doesn’t happen to anyone else,” Beckett continued as they sprinted in search of safety.
“You think I chose this?!” Emma protested. “It just happens!”
“There!” Beckett pointed to a red door up ahead.
Emma tried to conjure the defense spell Professor Swan had taught, but it was no use.
“Emma! What are you doing?” Beckett quickly pulled her into the safety of the door he had unlocked, shutting it behind them.
“Shhh--” he whispered.
The door shook on its hinges as something screeched outside.
Beckett instinctively pulled Emma closer at the sound, his arms holding her securely. Her body pressed against his, she could feel the warmth of his breath washing over her and the rise and fall of his chest against her own.
Maybe it was the fear, maybe the adrenaline, maybe something more, but Emma found her own arms circling around him too.
The two stood in silence in the darkness of what she could only imagine was a small closet, waiting for the danger to pass.
