i literally can't stop rotating hunger au worldbuilding and lore in my head. forgive me if you've ever touched on this in an ask before, but... re: the existential horror of being a parasite that has the sense of self of the host it ate. if one of grian's friends ever did get taken and used as a watcher larva host. how do you think he would feel about the watcher that came out the other side? would he want to see them as still the same person as his friend, or...?

Ive been staring at this ask since i got it with like. I need you to picture the most comically heartbroken expression right now okay. like this is me reading that and thinking about it in great and terrible detail:

Gods he would be devastated if this ever happened. He knows what thats like. He knows just how much it hurts-- and that its not a hurt that can be quantified, because its just that intense, that scalding, that encompassing of an experience to go through. I think, genuinely, Grian would be so utterly horrified and grief-stricken for whichever friend went through the Watcherification process that it would trump every other potential feeling on the list

But i think, ultimately, he would still view them as his friend, and treat them in the same way. There's a little bit of hypocrisy in Grian's character that i enjoy engaging with while writing him, and a good part of that in hunger au is centered around how he's firmly designated himself as the monster, and everybody else is the victim, and theres no room for nuance because he sucks and theyre the only people who are valid. When in reality, yes he hurt them, yes he did terrible and invasive things, but he did them out of pure survival rather than maliciousness, and that does make a subtle difference. And... hes not the only one who has fucked up, either!! The entire point of hunger au is how everyone has fumbled the bag in various ways and now they're all trying to clean it up together. Its just, yknow, Grian is so wrapped up in his own pain that he cant see those grey areas yet

And the thing is, if one of his friends got Watchered™, so to speak, and was standing in front of him, i think he would treat them with SO much compassion. Theyve been through possibly the worst thing anyone can experience and come out the other side-- at his core, Grian is i think a character who wants to do good, and do good by other people, and in this hypothetical that would translate into a lot of kindness he doesnt usually afford for himself. Honestly i think he'd spend the time trying to show them the ropes, get them set up in a better position than he found himself in, and provide his own fumbling emotional support as best he could, just out of sheer solidarity. Like, he gets it. He's been there. He may as well help out.

And i think he wouldnt even realize how hypocritical he's being until someone else pointed it out to him, about how he treats this friend with so much care but is simultaneously cruel to himself. I dont think he'd know how to handle that-- he's sort of dug himself a rut in the road with the way he thinks about and treats himself, and the cognitive dissonance would be really uncomfortable for him. Ultimately a good thing!!! Growth is often very uncomfortable. But imo Grian has a tendency to run from things like feelings of discomfort, so i think it'd take him a while to reconcile his previous ways of thinking with whats being presented in front of him essentially in the form of a mirror.

So uh. tl;dr: he'd be a little hypocrite about it and would feel a lot more compassionately inclined towards the friend than he does himself, and would try to help them out as best he could. decided to draw my own take on adult flurry heart, mostly so i could draw my own take on opaline in the au where opaline is like a nightmare moon of flurry heart. if youre wondering who the third pony is, its chrysalis' disguise for the au, named gentle heart.

i had to use bases because ive been in such a weird art block lately, i just couldnt draw bodies right, but i was having this idea and i just had to get it out of me lol. i drew everything else just fine, idk why i couldnt draw bodies. shout out to elementbases on deviantart for having a lot of good mlp bases! and organized into categories no less!

btw for reference for adult flurry heart i mainly used images of her only adult appearance which was in some mobile game ?? i never played it but its real and its the only time we see her as an adult, though i dont think we get any details about her aside from how she looks. i just wanted to say that cause idk how many people know about it.

so this is an au ive been tossing around for a while, especially since it started out as a half-theory i had about g5 before it truly did set in that they were just fucking up the entire thing (no hate to g5 or anyone who likes it but im personally just. disappointed), namely when they were like 'oh yeah opaline is just some alicorn that celestia and luna knew as kids and when they didnt want to play with her she held onto that for thousands of years and became evil over it'

also apparently the reason equestria is separated is because she just. idk whispered mean things in everyones ears? idk man i dont read the mlp comics, i plan to read g4s comics but not g5s. i didnt even know g5 had comics until i looked up why the pony kinds were separate.

anyway the idea was a theory because before all that we had no idea who opaline was, why there was some random alicorn, i mean, weve seen so few throughout g4! she was so mysterious for that, and i feel like the most popular idea was that she was flurry heart, since that was one of the few alicorns we knew of, and flurry is such a blank slate, especially since we dont technically ever see her adult form (with one exception)

i still personally think they shouldve gone that route but i know now that they wouldnt have, they probably wouldnt have wanted to give one of their previous characters, especially one like flurry, any bad traits or make her a villain, even though it would be such a cool idea. not to mention, they couldve redeemed her? idk man. worse villains have been redeemed lol

on to my au though. i wanted to keep it feeling like it couldve been canon but also stretching it just a little bit to make maybe more sense and also be more my creation, yknow?

we see at the end of g4 that chrysalis is trapped in stone alongside the other two villains she was working with, but we also know that these stone prisons can still be escaped, as we saw in discords introduction. my idea is that the stone is kept locked up, but unattended to, and she escapes, though her fellow villains dont. the specific details will be saved for if i go more in depth on all of this somewhere else lol

she develops a plan, that being to disguise herself as a normal pony, and to become staff at the crystal empire castle. that disguise is gentle heart, a name she literally made up because she was mocking the 'stupid' (from her perspective) names that ponies have, and she just kept it. while she works at the castle, she gets close to a young flurry heart.

she acts very extremely sickeningly nice and sweet in this disguise, but theres an uncanniness to it, a disingenuine undertone that is only noticeable when youre looking for it, really. flurry heart comes to love and trust her as a friend, and gentle heart isnt seen as suspicious to really anyone in the castle. people still think chrysalis is trapped in stone, after all.

her next step in the plan, however, is that when no one else is around, she shapeshifts herself into cadence or shining armor, and acts like a horrible parent to flurry heart. this creates a deep disconnect for flurry, as one moment her parents are the best ever, and the next they arent. if flurry tries to bring this up to them, they have no idea what shes talking about.

flurry begins to confide in gentle heart about this, and gentle heart begins to plant the idea in flurrys head that she should run away, and that gentle could run away with her. after a while of this, flurry finally decides to do this.

they run far, far away together, flurry being a child/young teenager, and they hide where no one else really goes, far from towns and pretty much any ponies. (this location hasnt been chosen yet but its not the mooost relevant? the basic point is that theyre hidden away) and they set up a home here.

soon in, gentle heart makes a decision. she shows her true form to flurry heart, a flurry heart who was never taught about how changelings used to be before their reformation, as her parents thought it was a conversation for when she was older. they didnt want her to feel paranoid, or scared. the changelings she knows are bright, and covered in generally round shapes. theyre not like the jagged and dark chrysalis.

gentle heart tells flurry that she was cursed. that her pony form is her true form, but she was cursed by the princesses to be in this form. being in her pony form drains her of energy, her changeling form recharges that energy. really, its just her excuse to not need to be in that pony form anymore. she tells flurry that she was cursed falsely, accused of a crime she did not commit. that she was made to work at the crystal castle so an eye could be kept on her. she asks to be called chrysalis, as being called gentle heart in this form feels wrong.

chrysalis right now is the only person in the world that flurry heart trusts, so she accepts this as truth.

as flurry heart grows up, chrysalis begins to plant ideas in her head that the other ponies are awful and horrible, just like her parents seemingly were. that flurry heart is better than all of them because shes not horrible, and on top of that, shes a natural alicorn. there hasnt been a natural born alicorn in thousands of years before her. flurry heart begins to believe all of this too. she doesnt have anyone or anything else to tell or show her otherwise.

these dark beliefs warp her appearance overtime, making her go from her parents daughter, into what we know as opaline, akin to princess luna turning into nightmare moon. she becomes annoyed with, averse to her cutesy name she was given by her family, and adopts the name opaline, both because of her crystal cutie mark, and because part of her still thinks of the crystal empire as her home, though now more like its hers to own someday.

speaking of, into her adulthood, opaline and chrysalis form a plan. a plan to take over equestria. the idea of being the ruler of all of pony kind was a natural conclusion that chrysalis wanted opaline to make, and so she did. their first step was to invade the crystal castle and take it over.

chrysalis tells her that cadence was never a fighter, so she shouldnt be an issue, but shining armor would be. if both chrysalis and opaline combined their power, they would easily overpower him and anyone else daring to fight them. the thing is... this works.

for a few reasons, actually. people were shocked at the return of chrysalis, and on top of that, despite her warped appearance, opaline was recognized as flurry heart. there isnt exactly many alicorns, and especially none that look similar to her. there was a fight put up, but not at full power. no one wanted to hurt the lost princess.

she takes over the empire, trapping any who oppose her, especially her parents. she doesnt even give them the option to talk to her. she plunges the empire back in dark days, not in the way that sombra did entirely, but still. shes strict on her subjects, and begins to make them like a military, planning to use them to invade canterlot. anyone who would dare come to attack the empire would be held off.

after she knows her subjects are loyal (terrified), and properly molded into an army, she storms canterlot, chrysalis by her side. its a hard fight, but they do it. they trap the other princesses, and they take over.

opalines first rule of business is to make the crystal empire the new capital, the new seat of power. for a while, this is the most drastic thing she does, otherwise going slow with her horrid ideas and changes.

the worse comes when shes already caused distrust and discomfort among ponykind, pitting ponies against eachother. she begins to decree that ponykind must be separated by type, designating towns to each, forcing ponies apart by law. she made sure it was enforced. she didnt need ponies coming together to rise against her, so she forced them apart. the damage is done.

this of course doesnt last forever. twilight is free and gathers the elements, and they take opaline by surprise, ending her reign. they empty the empire and trap her alone in her castle. thing is, she also trapped them in a limbo-like state, along with the other princesses (and her father), as they had also tried to join the fight. and a final blow to her, chrysalis got caught in crossfire, and was seemingly killed. no one intended it, but it happened. opaline is devastated.

and now, shes stuck. trapped alone in a castle in the middle of a city. she has the whole city alone to herself, and all she has now is the items left behind by her people, and mostly books. she only ever sees them as fiction or propaganda though, refusing to take them to heart and accept them as truth. alongside reading and re-reading the books around the city, she schemes of a way out. she is not very successful in this for a long time.

the closest she gets to getting out is when she opens the barrier just long enough to see, and kidnap, a young unicorn. a one misty brightdawn. she forces misty to be her only companion in a long time, and raises her like a daughter, but not lovingly.

some stuff continues on similar to canon, like misty befriending the mane 5 and leaving opaline behind, but i wont say more because i can keep some secrets for myself :] i do have an ending to her story planned though!

very 'in battle' moment, because vel is SOOO dynamis heavy. they can absorb aether a little more than normal sure but dynamis is strooong and they can use it like aether (mostly against their will and only in battle or in complete mania, which can happen anyyytime with usss) and it acts sort of like spiritual pressure (like bleach!), so the more its used the more their brain fries the more they spiral... its a cycle thats VERY slippery-

Pictures of my initial idea & thumbnails under the cut

Dont lets start was on one of my mixes & i was like damn...you know who this could apply to when reading the lyrics literally ? And the imaginary animatic in my mind was circling in my head the whole day that i was like yknow what. Ill bang it out. My idea for a comic can wait (i am bad at comics).

Thus leading to me screenshotting the lyrics on google & pulling out my art program to color code & make a cohesive narrative while focusing on terryjr & scary. And wouldnt you know it ! Theyve had like 4 major interactions which fit the chorus ! Yippie ! Pre chorus would be the story events that lead up to it & the verses would kind of be exploring the relationship between scary & terry as well as scary & normal cuz i think theres a lot of things there in that relationship thats also very relevant. Theyve hung out the most with eachother and theres a lot of similarities in between them but a LOT of differences so i wanted to put in normals jealousy & resentment of how scary treats her step dad.

Another thing was i didnt initially plan on a ending ending w/ scary & terry having a hug bcz the podcast hadnt gotten to that part yet so it would honestly be better to play it safe and have a open ended "they meet eachother in the middle" thing than like a concrete happy ending, but i thought about it right and its like. Will they even have a happy ending ?Because i dont think the story would go to the degree of like cruelty in killing terry, but i think them failing to have a reconciliation or failing to connect is very real, so i went for the more indulgent hug.

Ive never really made an animatic before but ive certainly imagined a lot & watched a lot on youchewb, so after i actually finished thumbnailing it all i decided to take the challenge and get a free trial of storyboard pro, after which i was on the grind non stop nonstop 💪 except for the days where i went to go play with friends & watch spiderverse :3 so more or less it took about two weeks.

For my first time doing something like this: im pretty proud ! And since this blog is the only place i like to talk abt dndads i decided to write out my thoughts on the development process here :] i think the only con of making this was by the time I finished i was pretty numb to the the emotions i wanted to convey so having a friend proofwatch what you make really is paramount imo. I also still really like all the taylors i drew hes so funny. First off im so sorry this took four (4) business days to answer anyway THANKS FOR LETTING ME TALK ABOUT BLORBO THE 2ND💙

5) On an average day, what can be found in your character’s pockets?

One item we know for sure he canonically carried was that little telescope in mk11, and he does have those little knives on his belt, which Im not sure actually have their use, so its headcanons from now on:

I think on an average day, Sub Zero may not even have pockets, or doesnt use them, cause hes the grandmaster of the Lin Kuei so if he needs something, it will brought to him, or taken away when he ask for it. Missions would be different, but still, hes not heavy on objects, cause having too much can put you off balance when you fight I imagine, so: save from those little knives he carry (just in case of... something I imagine?), he doesnt need any weapons because he can just materialize whatever he wants from ice in his hands... ice is his greatest multi-tool actually, it take care of almost everything his (old) assassin job required: target in sight? Make an ice dagger. Door locked? Freeze and punch the handle. Injured? Freeze the wound. I still think he would carry some minimal first aid kit for the latter, again just in case, but emphasis on the minimal: needle, wire, maybe bandages. Can also double as a sewing kit if he need to fix his clothes. Only thing ice cant do is making you see far so thats why he carry the telescope. He DOES strikes me as the kinda guy who get emotional over special items tho so maybe he would carry something he has an attachment to if its small and/or practical enough, maybe thats why he carry the knives.

6) Does your character have recurring themes in their dreams?

Canonically, the only times dreams are involved in Sub Zero's story is one in the mkx comics where he wakes up from a pretty vivid nightmare (that basically recap his story from him about to kill scorpion and then getting teleported and cyberized in mk9 all the way to him getting resurrected in mkx), and another one in a shared intro with Raiden in mk11 where they both had a strange dream about "a strange and unjust world with a dark knight and a caped wonder" (debunked by Cetrion in another intro where she tells Subz that it was no dream). Anyway the latter is just a cheeky lil nod to Injustice so its not to take too seriously. Other than that theres not much in canon concerning Sub Zero's dreams.

As for my personal thoughts, I dont think Sub Zero dream much in general honestly, for a variety of reasons. I think he has a very light, survival oriented, sleeping pattern, staying up as late as possible until exaustion get the better of him, and you dont really get dreams out of a rest like that. Then, (and especially nowadays), if he DOES dream it would most likely be unpleasant considering the amount of stress and trauma hes had in his life and naturally I dont think hes looking very forward to that so thatd be another reason to delay sleep, also nightmares are more question 7's thing.

But if he does get dreams sometimes, and should they have a reccuring theme, at the risk of giving the boring answer, its gotta be about ice and the general cold, cause of course the element of which he has the mastery of, which he uses to defend his life with, of which he has 5 puns at the ready at all time, and which is like, His Whole Thing, would bring him comfort. I think his most peaceful dreams would be accompagned with gentle snow falling in the background, whatever they are about. Probably his family. Or Tomas! They would also be very bright, cause yknow, reflective white snow and the likes (but then if hes unlucky itd turn into static snow and it ends into one of many themed nightmares whoops. Subz has a lot of things to process). Anyway to conclude I dont see Sub Zero as someone with particularly thrilling dreams packed with themes and symbolism, just having a full night feeling safe and free of nightmares based on or twisting memories would be enough.

10) Does your character feel more comfortable with more clothing, or with less clothing?

Sadly theres nothing in canon concerning this so lets just jump straight to headcanons

in both timelines, mf left the shirt as soon as possible once the old lin kuei was no longer in the picture, tits out tuesday every day of the week from that point on, god bless. But more seriously I hc that Kuai has some funky cryomancer biology going on, so for him the world is hotter than for anyone else, which is kinda ironic considering his (old) job required him to be heavily dressed with hood and mask and everything. He would have ways to cool himself down with his own powers but that still would mean making an (tho barely noticable) effort to remain at a comfortable temperature, when you can do that by just taking your shirt off once youre free to do so cause nobody can tell you what to do anymore.

22) What does your character like in other people?

So like most things, theres no clear cut canon indication written somewhere so its interpretation time:

A lot of his intros are about this so OR COURSE he likes people with honor and integrity. He was raised in the Lin Kuei which we can safely guess was quite the strict place, so of course he would be used to rules and be comfortable when theres structure, but somehow he mostly took to heart the good aspects of it, so of course he would like people with strong morals and an equally strong sense of duty, and keeping true to oneself.

Also as seen in quite a few of his intros, he seems to admire good leadership, and not in a "people he want to follow" way but more like, fellow leaders yknow? Because I dont think becoming grandmaster himself has EVER been in his end goals before but he was duty bound to redeem the Lin Kuei as the last true one after the cyber initiative, so I imagine him being put in a leading position was not a natural transition for him, despite his found affinity for teaching as he would find later in his life, hence why he would "look up" for lack of better words, to other people with leadership status in his life, like jax, sonya, and perhaps hanzo.

This one would fit his Lin Kuei upbringing but of course he value strength in other people, "only the strongest join the Lin Kuei" didnt leave his mindset but now its aimed to protect first and foremost, yourself, your clan, and your realm.

He also seems surprisingly fine with ambition, he did say that "loyalty shouldnt stunt one's growth" and considering his history in the Lin Kuei (esp after the cyber initiative and what he thinks of it) itd make sense.

I also kinda got the vibe that hes fine with ambition but not in a competitive way, more in a "better oneself" way than seeking to be above others in one way or another (he was fine with Frost's ambition, he intended to pass the mantle of grandmaster to her, but it was her impatience and lack of wisdom that eventually strained their relationship). I guess this one falls into him valuing strength again. But this also fot his role as a teacher now: of course youd enjoy someone who know their place but still seek to learn and improve.

Anyway I think Subz is a fair straight guy who enjoy people with a similar mindset, despite yknow, what I never shut up about

23) What does your character dislike in other people?

opposite of whats above lol. Impatience, as said with Frost. Definitely lack of discipline or downright foolishness, Jonnhy Cage only gets a pass from getting iced because theyre allies and probably have been so for years. He has a few lines about it so its safe to say he cant stand cockiness, or people getting way too over their heads because of their own power. Subz is a man with diamond hard principles so hes not big on lone wild cards as well Im betting. Bad Bosses too, Subz wants to lead by inspiring respect and value honesty so of course leaders like Shao Kahn and Sektor who led with cruelty and lies and fear would revulse him. Also hes NOT fond or authority figures somehow higher than him aka Gods, the Lin Kuei did not/do not worship them for starters, tho Raiden kinda gets a pass because hes an ally to Earthrealm, theyre equals in its protection tho Raiden is stronger, and also saved his life once so Subz is indebted but its not like he actively look up to the guy, except in a literal sense cause Raiden is stupid tall.

AAAAAAA this question is so sweet!! honestly, making each other laugh is like ESSENTIAL in my relationships yknow jkfgkljdfhgkjhd. cuz the moment you know another persons sense of humour, and knowing what makes them laugh/smile? such a nice way of making them happy and idk theres something personal about that. laughter is the best feeling in the world and if you can make ur partner feel that way? idk to me thats the way to my heart hehehe

Stan is a really funny person, like its one of his strong traits. even if hes not trying to be funny, his snark and bitter sarcasm is enough to make me crack a smile. like.....hes also just really rude?? hfjhdgdfk like he will outright tell someone that they have an ugly baby like "woah lady you have one ugly baby!!" Ford is a bit different. he doesnt rly use the "make her laugh" tactic to cheer me up, he lets stan take care of that. hes more of the "give her the plaidypus treatment and make her fave drink" guy. basically a lot of holding and words of affirmation, a kiss on the forehead or two shld def do the trick.

HOWEVER, doesnt mean the guy aint funny. hes a diff brand of funny though, he can be sassy and mischievous when he wants to. (when both stan and ford get snarky its a real fuckin treat lemme tell ya) according to journal 3, he used to prank fiddleford by messing w his rubiks cube. its small and harmless, but tiny pranks is his way of playing around and teasing others. sometimes when i enter a room, he starts to sing an old 50s song rly loudly and grabs my hands to swing me around in a bad waltz cuz he knows i get embarrassed easily and i start to giggle out of habit (FJHKJDHFDG IT JUST FLUSTERS ME OK)

i think the au i have that is the most like, Out There is the ares au? but i do think that the characterization IS largely fairly recognizable, all the names are just... different. theres also lots of jokes w/ me and my friends that at this point remortal tony is borderline an oc and like,,,, yeah fair enough. i feel like i'm doing at least mostly decently keeping him like, as he would be in that situation, though. guess we'll find out tho whoops.

and also like,,,, again, when i do oc stuff, i wanna do oc stuff, yknow? like, i wanna do it with my characters. with my worlds. i dont wanna just... write an au thing that gets low-key ooc i wanna do my OWN thing.

but also. my first exposure to 616 canon WAS just reading a bunch of fics and getting really really confused about "all these weird aus" because i was (and. lbr still am.) a dumbass. like,,,, fic w/ the og-ish 616 team in the mansion like "hey neat!" without realizing. i was reading (616) cw fic like "wow, this is a weird take on that movie! really good though!" and then being confused about why it was written before ca:cw came out. also, i read, like, so much noir fic, and even got into the filtered tag for it, before i realized it WASN'T just a super in-depth collaborative au and instead was, actually, a canon published comic. the two fics that got me into the fandom were a) circles of rust by kerosenesteve, which is a canon-divergent thing that splits off in im1, and space electric by icarus_chained, which is a space au. one that does follow like, the major plotlines mostly, but is still, you know, sci-fi space stuff!

so like. actually i have forgotten where i was going with this but if i want original stuff, i'll fuckin read original stuff. i'll write original stuff. i'll write stuff that has no fandom influence at all (as much as is possible, considering i cut my teeth writing for fandom and that is Still a very large influence on how and why i write) and i've even got a blog for just original fiction stuff that i write (shameless plug, @sorbusscriptor )

but when it's fandom i want? i wanna play what's already there. i wanna read into what already exists. it's not even about the shape of what is there, it's about the void that that shape leaves! its like brownian motion, canon is an iceburg and half the fun is finding out just what's knocking at it underneath the water to get it to be shaped the way it is.

like,,,,, finding a piece of media and filling in the holes, and what isn't said, and what happens inbetween what's happening on-screen, in trying to figure out what's up with the non-pov characters, it's so fun!!!! both when it's something you adore, and when it is a book or movie or show that is. absolute goddamn garbage lmao.

like, i watched Breach with my family a little bit ago (space "horror" movie feat. bruce willis that is shamelessly ripping off like every single other sci-fi movie that exists, that is just,,,, so weird with the plot things it chooses to use, and has so many holes it's practically a net.) and it was just.... so FUN being like "so hey, WHAT the fuck was happening here? why did this happen? why DIDN'T this happen?" because it's such a bad movie. there's an alien parasite some guy brought on the ship and like. it is never explained where tf this thing is from. it's from "the experiments" but like,,,, what does that mean. where did it come from. the guy is asked where tf these things are from and he's like "maybe they exist before time" and bro. WHAT? WHAT DOES THAT MEAN! and like. god its just so bad. everyone is trying to get into an escape pod when like. a) their ship is, uh... either doing a quantum-jump, or going at FTL speed, or, one of the 9 thousand different FTL-mechaincs stolen from various other medias, and im pretty sure the escape pod is not capable of going at that speed, so it sure seems like if that thing ejects Bad Things are gonna happen, and 2, they're like.... 40 fucking days away from the planet they're aiming for WHILE AT warp speed. WHERE DO THEY THINK THEY'RE GONNA GO it's just genuinely. the holes left in this movie are more interesting than the movie itself. and if you look hard enough, every piece of media is like that

being an asian fan in the hs fandom is kinda, not great actually. in fact, it not only feels like we’re not here at all, that we’re erased, but its honestly? downright harmful. people treat the trivialization and fetishization of your culture to be,,, like a Big Joak. yall joke about weebs like these people havent been literally grooming and abusing asian girls, like we havent been made fun of enough for Their actions, like we aren't already viewed as the strange punchlines to jokes that still seem somehow acceptable. its somehow funny to joke about how you hate every sign of asian culture that shows up throughout the comics, like how dirk’s kotatsu was dumb and pretentious as if people in japan dont literally live with one and use it every single day!

even asian-coding in characters get swept away in favour of other headcanons. even the megidos, who are as close to canonically asian as they possibly can be in a medium like homestuck, are often drawn white or something completely different altogether. the stridlondes are also heavily asian-coded, and the fans who do pick up on that, who finally feel comforted by someone like them as protagonists? they often just.. give up on that, because they see so little representation in the fandom. (theres only like one popular artist i know of that draws the strilondes asian? but like, hats off to u pal, youre fighting the good fight). also, it seems strange, to be represented so little considering almost 3 billion people on earth is asian, which is, Quite A Lot to be not represented a lot. dont get me wrong, i adore the outpouring of more diverse art of the kids, but a hard truth to swallow is that pocs being weebs/fetishizing asian culture, is just as harmful as white people doing the same. there is a world of difference between japanese dirk, trying to interface with his lost culture by clinging to the most performative and popular parts of it, than another dirk, appropriating people’s cultures because he thinks its funny or interesting based off a show he watched once. i love how people are like "wow the striders like anime and care about traditions and use japanese words and overall just seem like diaspora kids" and the conclusion they draw from that is "clearly,, they cannot be asian" bc a non-asian person being interested in those things is better than an asian person whose interested in their own culture i guess??

in fact, a lot of these narratives are so much more interesting once theyre looked at through their coded lenses!

Dave’s struggle with coming to terms with his emotions strikes such an interesting chord when the striders’ concept of irony and never showing their emotions Correspond so well to the idea of honour/face, where youre not supposed to show that youre Ever Sad or anything that isnt a positive emotion because it shows that youre a Failure and You Failed and that makes you a Bad Person, which is exactly what dave struggles with because hes So Guilty about it, which ties to the guilt and shame a lot of asian people feel about not being able to live up to impossible standards set by their parents, which is another theme we see reflected in all four strilondes. 

rose’s strained relations with her mother are mirrored in so many of our second-generation lives and makes so much more cultural sense when looked at that way. the weird distance you hold from your parents, where you cant look each other in the eyes anymore, because every interaction feels more like a business transaction. you hand in your good grades and praise from teachers, talking about how mature you are, and they return with some present or gift that you don't really want. you dont know anything about them, and they dont know anything about you, Not the person you Actually Are, anyways. but there is a yearning, to be close, to know eachother, but you only feel it in return when its too late. as well as her Obsession to be mature, to be smart and adult-like because thats what shes praised for, because you Need to be academically the best always and that means reading dictionaries until the sun goes down, repeating each word until they are engraved into your mind. always finding competition, subtle or not, because if you are not the winner, what are you?  dirk’s wild performative love of japanese culture (which also, in turn, lead to non-asian fans literally trashing it like it was a funny joke to call someone’s culture lame and stupid) seems like ‘ironic’ weebism, but its also being Exactly the type of over-the-too performative reclaiming of our culture that so many asian diaspora kids do when they’re teens! they feel bad about pushing away their culture as youth, but they’re not quite mature enough to actually care about the rich history and ‘boring’ parts, so they cling to pop culture, to social media and something so much more easily consumable, like anime. which is not even to mention the idea of him trying desperately to connect to a culture that he has never grown up in, but still belonged to by consuming mass amounts of media, being Such an immigrant story. as well as his massive competitive streak and need to make other people as good as he is (but not better), is the type of internalized pressure that a lot of asian kids feel as well. 

and all the stridlondes have various anxieties about not performing well enough, of not living up to a standard that they have set for themselves, feeling like even a single step back or even one mistake is a catastrophic failure that’s branded to you for life. Which is just as much of a mental health thing as it is like,,, an asian thing

Lucifer (S)

perma stressed in practice, not only does he have to juggle his regular work, he has to wrangle all his brothers and keep the order to make sure that it goes smoothly. without everyone goofing off.

i mean,,, coordinating the attacks is a setter’s job. and they get to touch the ball a lot. do u think lucifer would take sets from anyone else? no i think not.

also a really strong server. loud, high velocity, and a nasty spin that makes it go straight to the ground. 

ull never see this man dive after the ball hes the setter yknow so he trusts his team to bring the ball to him with a smooth pass.

ok wait maybe he might trust satan to handle attacks but not always.

there was a game where the opponents had super analyzed lucifer’s strategy and would keep shutting down his sets, while beel was doin p good he didn’t want to overexert him and he started rushing his sets

satan wasn’t having any of it and called lucifer out on it. said that they needed to switch it up.

and boy was the opponent in for a new kind of hell. when you put this boy on the offense-

he’s daring you to try and block him. but face it, you Can’t. this boy is a Monster.

Mammon (L)

uhhh was abt to put him as mb, and go on some spiel where lucifer sets to him a lot bcs mammon has the speed to keep up w his tosses

but thinking abt it more,,, having him as libero makes sense. bcs hes the shortest–*mcshot*

got the best fuggin control. those receives *chefs kiss* perfection. the arc, the parabola HGNNN.

has the speed and agility to go after really far out balls and save them with his leg/foot. has definitely jumped into the crowd/over a barrier for a receive multiple timess.

hes the guy who gets ragged on the most during practices (bcs lucifer wants perfect a-receives like wth lucifer you’ve got like 5 other receivers--) but he also hypes up everyone when team spirit’s are down during a game.

Leviathan (MB)

super analytical of his opponents, can quickly pinpoint weak spots in their defense.

doesn’t get fooled by time delay attacks or pipes.

hes more quiet and sometimes forgets to communicate when hes focusing really hard on the match.

he’s that kind of blocker who makes you feel like you can only spike a certain way in order to not get caught by the block

imagine you’re avoiding his block so you go for a cross court spike but you just spiked it right to mammon. oof.

but he does get p tilted when hes not performing at his best or when he gets tooled (his biggest pet peeve as a blocker because that’s not fair the blockers are there to stop the ball from crossing the net but no apparently you can also use the blockers as a way to score points thats plain unfair.) and can sometimes beat himself up p badly. his bros are there to snap him out of it and focus on the game.

Satan (MB)

during practice (and even during some games) he likes to experiment with different lineups and switch up player positions. as a result hes got p rounded out skills.

i mean,,, it just kinda makes sense. he seems like the kind of player who could easily deduce where the ball’s going to go. the one who times the three-man blocks.

bro he does not hold back at all when he spikes. even if he’ll be blocked. he will try to spike through. and the scary thing is,,, the more worked up he is, the harder his spikes get.

for the most part tho p solid all around, sometimes even sets (when lucifer’s in a bad spot see above) 

that cheeky mb who’d make scathing remarks to the other team if they make rudimentary mistakes. things like calling their blocks a sieve stuff like that.

if u somehow manage to piss him off during a game good luck his spikes are now 10x harder rip to your arms.

Asmodeus (WS)

during practices hes the type of player who would do a spin and a twirl right before serving the ball. does it during practices, has done it during actual matches. 

has a fanclub and they show up during practices and theyre so fuggin noisy--- but he revels in the attention

theres a certain flair and grace in his movements that you just cant help but get drawn in. but oop- dont get distracted bcs oop he was just a decoy and you just look like a fool now.

he doesn’t hit as hard when he spikes. but,,,BUT,,,he tools the blockers. he aims for the sides of their arms to get the ball sucked in or the edges of their fingers to get a wipe and it’s literally so fucking annoying ngghghrh

sometimes, when he’s doing two-man or three-man blocks, he knows he gets targeted as the shorter blocker, so he makes sure to switch with someone taller right at the last second.

also joins satan in playing mind games with the opposing blockers. he’ll act all charming and friendly at first, and then he’ll start roasting their form. but then other times he chats up the opposing players and tries to get their number. 

Beelzebub (WS)

sometimes, when they go on runs, he breaks away from the group w belphie to go stop by somewhere to eat. now lucifer makes them run in the front of the group to keep an eye on them.

strong side hitter. that’s it. he’s their ace.

no block can stop him. lucifer’s strong, but beel has raw brute force thats just a bit stronger

good luck trying to. but you’re just gonna get your arm ripped off.

also a really strong server but doesn’t have as much control as lucifer does.

even in the back, his backrow spikes are still super fucking strong good luck to the opponents.

whenever hes up to serve, he reminds everyone to watch their heads. (mammon didn’t listen and went down one time during a practice game now he makes sure to steer clear of the ball’s path when beel’s up to serve.)

Belphegor (WS)

during practice, you’re hardly ever going to get him to do more than the bare minimum. 

so you know kunimi from haikyuu? that’s exactly his playstyle.

minimal movement, no wasted energy. until the latter half of the game.

oh man, again? he’s going for a third spike a-fucking-gain?

lowkey makes you wanna drop the ball just so this dam rally ends quickly

also does a lot of cheeky dinks over blocks before slamming the ball down and catching the receiver offguard.

Alright, a second major arc for both Helena and Tim! Let’s dive into it!

(no warnings that i can think of except genre-typical gang activity mentioned?)

For Helena:

Let’s start off with the fact that I SHOULD have read thru to #6, bc that one capped off the previous story arc v nicely. Helena Got Her Vengeance

now, technically she DIDN’T directly kill the man who like, Pulled The Trigger on her family (bc the guy who ordered the hit in the first place did that himself) BUT she did have a more active hand in THAT guy’s death. so im calling that a Win in the Vengeance Category. YOU GO HELENA

Did a brief detour with the JL adventures she participates in. nothing major to report on that front but im cautiously optimistic for what it’ll foreshadow for how well she plays with others lmao

as far as the second major arc of her solo goes: if the first arc was vengeance, this next was was Fallout. both in the sense of the legacy her father left behind, and in what almost became of NYC (and yes, she’s def operating out of NY for now, not gotham which!!! is interesting!)

the A-plot for most of it is taking down a serial killer who figured out the cypher to her dad’s ledgers and was a pretty satisfying read on its own? but then...

theres a b-plot abt a mostly drug-based gang trying to get their hands on nuclear technology and their means of doing it just... put a really shadow on the A plot to me.

like its cool to see the lines Helena’s drawing and her handling something so big!!!

but at the same time, there’s so much loss that occurs before Helena’s even aware of the situation and just... it really rubs me wrong in a way i cant fully articulate yet. but we’ll see. all early stories are flexible i suppose when her origins are going to be retconned away too.

And onward to Tim:

so the big things about the Robin mini-series and the story-arc that Dixon followed it up with... or at least what really drew my attention. was the inclusion of Shiva

bc Tim acknowledges that she’s like... actively killing people while she’s helping him and Rawlins.... but goes along with her training anyways??? and doesn’t??? yknow at least like? bargain with her to Maybe Not Kill While He’s Around???

idk!!! even Dinah at least had a throwaway line abt that from what i can remember of BoP but!!! maybe I’m overthinking it

Only, oh wait, im not, because........ when Tim confronts King Snake at the end, essentially wins the fight and then has a Moment when Shiva’s trying to convince him to push the guy completely off the ledge he just!!!! fucking leaves!!!

like TIM NO. HELP HIM UP???? DONT HAVE THIS BULLSHIT PLAUSIBLE DENIABILITY.

this is the kinda shit that got JASON in trouble with readers but im just supposed to believe that with Tim this is suddenly okay??? and OH YEAH, tim TOTALLY thinks that the dude died and either 100% has his head up his ass or thinks that Shiva would’ve simply PUSHED the guy over the edge to kill him like fkjdla;s no honey, i know ur New to this, but that is Not how Shiva kills thanks. uh-uh.

otherwise, was really cool to see the ghost dragons story done up in p quick succession and the parting line WAS p haunting, with Bruce berating tim to disobeying orders and tim reminding b that he ‘isnt jason’ like..... oof that pain.

oh, also looking back on the notes i made! “Ducard”! was a lot of fun seeing a name i could recognize! love when there’s generations interacting in comics & the layers/degrees of separation that it gives. One of these days we gotta build up a game of like. Six Degrees of Shazam or smthn where we try to find out how far apart different heroes/characters are separated from each other 

okay wow that was a WHOLE tangent. my OTHER other note was that an excuse that bruce used to keep tim off patrol (and it WORKED mind you) was that tims grades were slipping. just saying the REAL BEST STUDENT ROBIN (jason) had GREAT GRADES and couldnt WAIT to study when he got home from patrol!!! who’s the REAL smartest robin then HMMMMMMMMM

might fuck around and make a list of tony’s alters*!! right now. why not. its hard to differentiate but i could take some stabs in the dark. ok this got long so its under a cut.

mark aside (because ive said enough about him), there’s at least the two who look young, no surprise. there’s probably at least one more young one (younger, with more focus on home/family/howard trauma) but he wouldn’t be relevant to this whole... plot, anyway. but we do see one who looks to be in boarding school, so under 15, and a slightly older one who still looks ~young, i want to say 17-20ish?? and he’s very “look how fine and okay we are! our life is awesome!” but is literally in a racing suit as if fast cars aren’t somewhere he gravitates mid breakdown. i love that for him. very in character. 

there’s also uhh. cave!tony, actively bandaged. he absolutely never left the cave, and wont. theres no... yknow. there’s no adjusting to that that’s a clean split kind of thing. i dont know how long 616 was in the cave but i’m assuming also a couple of months?? like mcu?? more than long enough to end up with a permanent split who can’t really... i mean we all know he didn’t like. get therapy. he cant reintegrate. he’s probably either the old host who “died” in the cave, or he split in that environment, but either way, he doesn’t make it out. 

there’s at least two iron man splits, the sort of... early grey one and the red&gold one are shown, and i dont know enough about early comics canon to make a guess at why they’re distinct, exactly, but i’m guessing some sort of near-death-or-actual-death event that puts a nice clean line in between them. or a team change, could be less dramatic than that? unless the grey one’s JUST the mark I, in which case nvm because the difference then is obvious. escape vs be a hero, you’d need two. notably theres not a super modern iron man split shown, i’m assuming once he stopped doing the secret identity thing that stopped being a split type he’d need, but prior to that he’d need an active, functional iron man split at all times. and he’s got at least the two. (whether or not you want to call mark an iron man split... shrugs! he’s not quite the same tho, since his job is not to pilot the suit, necessarily.) 

there’s an actively drunk one, and he’s an important split, because he’s obviously going to hold onto a lot of the desire to drink/etc. i know tony does the “keep a bottle nearby to figure out how bad he’s doing” thing but honestly that’s also a “how close is this tony” meter, imo. he’s necessary but he’s also, generally, possible to keep away. if he’s holding onto the majority of that impulse it’d be, honestly... well i think it’d look like the way tony approaches his alcoholism actually (and the whole crown meant specifically to control, yknow, hulk, in ts:im? was also clearly aimed at this one, on tony’s end.) 

we’ve got this very coherent seeming business-y tony also, who i’d peg as “The Tony Stark” -- as in, the face, the name, the one who’s “on.” especially in the early days when the “host” tony was drinking, having a split whos job is company things, PR things, etc, that’s going to go a long way. he seems like that, but i’m stabbing in the dark. i could be missing sth obvious. 

we’ve also got the one in eScape in ts:im who doesn’t show up on the page in im2020 but because the kid shows up in both, i’m really... willing to extend this to him also. he has no reason to show up re: mark anyway but he seems coherent and specific and extremely out of time. probably an old host but cut after the alcoholism spiraled out of control? since he clearly drinks without much concern. but, fwiw, he doesn’t seem to line up totally cleanly with any “real” time period, and was actively being manipulated by motherboard, so...? i dont know. 

i’d argue there’s also The One Who Died In Civil War II but he wouldn’t show up in this whole convincing-mark thing because. well. he’s “dead.” like hes in there but he’s Deactivated, so to speak. host change. 

the new tony, post-mark, is someone distinct! new host. but a shaky one so far and i think this tracks with what i’ve read of iron man vol 6 also (which is only whats on MU), tony has no idea what he wants or what he’s doing but he’s trying a bunch of things, that are all very different from what he was doing before but also falling back on things that are familiar, like hosting big parties, even when it’s incompatible with his new goals. this would track with it being a whole host-switch since pre-CWII and post-mark tony are just... not going to be the same person, imo. 

i am on the fence a little about if ts:im tony and IM vol6 tony are the same person or not, and i was leaning towards “yes” because i feel like ts:im tony didn’t have enough time to stabilize, like, there were too many breakdown events happening in rapid succession while mark was building up in the background. but he had a relationship with jan that was going well, he was really trying with the eScape, etc, so i want to give him that distinctness, at least, and IM vol6 tony also did the thing where he changes his appearance up a bunch, which is kind of a red flag for host changes, especially... right after the year-long interruption that was mark’s whole... thing. 

i’d have to read a LOT more comics to say any more than this, because i’m sure i’m missing some obvious ones who should exist but aren’t present/relevant re: mark. but. here are some of my thoughts anyway!!!! tony& gives me life.

There's a yokai watch american comic adaptation???

Its only three issues long but the art is actually really good! And it has a lot of the same goofy humour as the original canon, its actually where that famous pic of jibanyan doing the one internet meme pose came from. With any other series youd think that was a cringey dub addition but honestly the original games have even more references!

Only complaint i have is that the story is kinda thin. Its got a cool concept with Snartle having a grudge against Shogunyan and then we go through different time periods and see him fight jibanyan and robonyan too. But it means we literally do not see any of the human characters or any actual yokai watch-ing, its just three different big action scenes with the same dude fighting variants of the same other dude. And for some reason they made the weird choice to have whisper hovering outside the margins constantly narrating everything? Like iys not just an occasional fourth wall break or anything, EVERY PAGE has him infodumping shit about the games or repeating what we can already see in the panel. It just feels like they didnt know how to deliver the story without someone literally saying HELLO THIS IS THE STORY

Also there was kind of a weird thing with Snartle's mom? First off, for some reason despite being yokai her and him in the past just look 100% like humans and apparnatly live on a floating island in the yokai world that looks exactly like a small old fashioned human neighbourhood. I wonder if originally it was just gonna be 'he was a human who died' but heavier content restrictions on amerocan kids comics made them have to censor it? But then also his mom is straight up a child abuser and this is portrayed 100% positively. Snartle is all "my origin story is that i used to be a bratty kid but then my mum smacked me about with a wooden rod and i instantly learned my lesson and became a justice man who stops other kids from being rude". And then he's the villain of the story because he takes it too far and punishes kids disproportionately AND theres literally the line "you werent being a brat you were just being a child who didnt know any better" yet noone fuckin questions the mother's actions?? And she smacks him again with the stick when she sees him as an adult, and only stops when she learns he's become a 'respectable' control freak like her. And his redemption comes from apologising to her for being bratty and aknowledging that she apparantly hurt him because she loves him and blah blah ugh. Weird and uncomfortable writing!! Seriously i do not understand how we were meant to take the moral "he is being too strict with kids and youre meant to sympathise with jibanyan stopping him" yet also "literally hitting your kids is not being too strict with them and in fact will make them SO good and obedient that they become the bad guy from being too much of that". And..yknow..the fact we just dragged the guy back to his mom's house to get smacked yet again to teach him this lesson....

But yeah even if the plot sucked the art was really pretty and it was cool to see what was basically official licensed fanart. I guess americanized kids comics are kinda like doujins now i think about it!

okay here’s my... thoughts on “a simple favor”

getting warnings out of the way uhhh if you’re sensitive to incest or parental abuse those might be worth watching out for. though theyre not related, oddly enough. really the incest thing was kind of weird and didn’t really feel like anyone thought about the full implications

spoilers from here on out, and its a thriller so yknow those matter

um let me start by being nice, it was very fun and while i did guess some twists, a lot of times then THOSE would twist in ways i didnt expect. everyone was very good in it, etc, if you just want a fun thriller than it’s good

okay ive been chewing over the rest mentally in the car because i am... conflicted

so. the gay subtext wasn’t subtext, it was text, but also not really? ill just explain it to make my point clear, they have blake lively’s character be CLEARLY queer (bisexual, or something along those lines) and there’s a kiss, but... how do i put this

the movie kind of feels like theres another version of the script where the husband turns out to be cheating with the TA or something else shitty and then blake lively (emily) and anna kendrick (stephanie) run off together to be morally complicated lovers and raise their children together. but then someone went “no, that’s TOO gay, you can make blake lively gay but not that” and so we got what we got

because the husband ends up being a little bit Too Perfect for the... mood they kind of set early. stephanie of course ends up going back to him in the end and they’re Happy and Straight 

and it’s weird because emily fluctuates between this character who is morally complicated and not really a good person but who clearly loves a few people and is from an abusive background, and... this borderline cartoonish villain? they even clearly imply she’s abusive and, dont get me wrong movies exploring women being abusive can be a good thing, but in this case it’s just... it feels a bit too much like... “yeah that mean ol emily with her sexual deviance is so awful and abusive and she’s the reason her husband can’t write, and she lures poor stephanie in with her wiles and almost seducers, but It’s Okay because they all end up straight and happy without her” 

when i put it like that it sounds really harsh but. hmnnnn. 

anyway there’s a turn where you THINK steph and emily are teaming up to take down the husband, (which feels a little weird because he’s been So Perfect) but then it turns out nope! stephanie and the husband were teaming up to take down emily! all the things she was suspicious/angry at him about were really emily’s fault/not his fault! and haha emily gets her comeuppance in a kind of bizarrely comical ending

i don’t know, maybe this was all intended and it’s me having expected something different and being disappointed talking, but...

anyway this is speculation but i feel like there was a version of this script where emily was primarily just... complicated but within a system that privileges men, and who had much more of a romance arc with stephanie, but somebody said “that’s too gay” and so emily was shoved as the full antagonist and most of the gay was just on her and it became. something

i guess i’m more steamed about this than i thought. make your own judgement, i guess

hm.... its so hard to decide but Here It Is (these are pretty much all gonna be x men btw thats just. my area of expertise) (also wall of text warning)1. kurt wagner/nightcrawler - i love him bc he deals w so much bs but he doesnt let it get to him too bad? like he knows most humans hate him for just like. Being a mutant but he decides he doesnt have to let that define him... (i have comic panels but mobile is homophobic and i cant add them) ANYWAY hes just very much the heart of the group... even during really dark shit (like right after dark phoenix saga, brood arc (which i hated but theres some good stuff in there)) he tries to help the other x men not dwell on it as much bc hes knows dwelling on shit like that can just make it worse... i think the group would be a lot different without him and hes kinda underrated imo... hes a very kind and supportive guy and i love him2. ororo munroe/storm - storm is just such a fuckin good character when you get down to it. like her character development is from this woman who has basically been treated as a goddess her whole life (theres some real shitty tropes having to do w her backstory but the effect to her character still stands yknow) and as a result shes very. Always in control of her emotions and she doesnt really let herself feel a lot? but as things go on and shit gets rougher (dark phoenix arc, then brood arc, etc) she sorta gives reign to her emotions more and over time we get storm as a co leader w/ cyclops and eventually singular leader of the x men (and punk storm). shes an incredibly strong and capable woman and leader. even after forge takes away her powers!! she keeps GOING.... shes just very resilient and smart and i love her a lot3. kitty pryde - kitty pryde is just a fun, bright character. she comes to the x men as just a young teenager and shes just got this great, bright eyed enthusiasm for it. shes like a little sister to the team which i think is a really sweet dynamic? like especially her relationship w storm. i know i said nightcrawler is the heart of the group but i think she really rivals him fir the title bc shes just got so much of it. shes a very smart and resourceful girl esp for her age (im pretty sure at one point she beat a xenomorph like monster all by herself) and shes also very kind and loving and has really interesting relationships w the other characters (illyana, ororo, magneto, etc)4. illyana rasputin/magik - illyana is just absolutely fascinating because of the way she got her powers... she lives in a hell dimension from the time shes 6 to probably 13 or so? comes out of that ALIVE, and has to reckon with it... shes just this 13 year old thats dealing with demon sorcerer powers who feels very alienated from others because she really didnt grow up anywhere near the way any of her peers did5. dani moonstar - please read the demon bear arc of new mutants. its so fucking good and you will understand completelyanyways im too tired to write meta anymore so thanks for coming to my ted talk
