One thing you need to know about me is that I will never reblog anything that has the addition "this should be reblogged by everyone" or anything of the like.

Queer Books for Spooky Season!
i have read and enjoyed all of these, and have organized them in such a way that makes sense to me and hopefully peaks your interest! most are straight-up horror, but some just have horror / spooky themes.
[please note, not all these books have overtly queer characters / relationships, but are included because they have queer authors and/or queer characters, plots or themes. don’t want people to go into any of these books expecting romance.]
Spooky & Sapphic
The Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir. everyone on tumblr knows about this series. it’s a science-fantasy, it’s got lesbian necromancers in space, it’s got mysteries and intrigue, and i would describe it as a “fun” read but please know my idea of fun includes body horror, grief and spooky vibes.
The Luminous Dead by Caitlin Starling. the vibes of this one are off the charts. story is told from the perspective of a lone caver on a foreign planet, as she communicates with her dive suit’s handler. it’s tense and suspenseful, lots of survival-fiction vibes, and it’s exactly how i want characters to flirt: via coms only, as one fights for their life.
Yellow Jessamine by Caitlin Starling. this one’s a weird little gothic novella about a shipping magnate who’s confined to her creepy estate as a mysterious plague runs rampant through the city.
Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke by Eric LaRocca. this novella is told via early-2000s chat logs and emails between two women as they develop one of the most unnerving relationships i’ve ever read. gross things happen! this one’s polarizing! but i loved it so much. absolutely unhinged vibes.
Parasites, but Goth
Leech by Hiron Ennes. most of this book is told from the POV of a parasitic hivemind called the Institute, which uses host bodies to act as physicians for the rest of society in a post-apocalyptic, gothic setting. and it gets weirder from there. it’s an honestly quite beautiful exploration of bodily autonomy, identity, and trauma.
What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher. this is a retelling of the fall of the house of usher, and includes a spooky manor, fungal parasites, possessed wildlife, and the exact kind of unsettling atmosphere that i love in a horror book.
Sorrowland by Rivers Solomon. this story follows a teen mother who’s escaped from a cult and is now undergoing a fungal metamorphosis in the forest. big thriller/survival vibes and some truly excellent commentary about oppression, trauma and societal secrets.
Could Vampirism be Gayer? (yes, actually)
A Dowry of Blood by S.T. Gibson. "dracula’s polycule” is what sold me on this book, and while yes, it’s got polyamorous vampires, the heart of the story is about the dynamics of an abusive relationship, with a strong thread of hope throughout.
The Route of Ice and Salt by José Luis Zárate, transl. by David Bowles. i’m not usually one to categorize a book as Important (TM) but this novella definitely is that. it was originally published in the 90s by a mexican author, and it’s a reimagining of dracula’s voyage to england from the POV of the captain, a closeted gay man full of queer yearning. this book is beautiful and painful and challenging and yes, important. it’s also horny as hell so like, you’ve been warned lol. only recently has it been made available in english, too!
Science as Horror
The Echo Wife by Sarah Gailey. a short novel about a woman who’s recently separated from her husband, who in turn started a relationship with a clone of her. loved the character exploration in this, and it’s definitely got mystery/thriller vibes if you’re into that.
You’ve Lost a Lot of Blood by Eric LaRocca. this is a vibe-heavy, kind of trippy novella which features a story-within-a-story. don’t want to give away too much of the plot here because it’s a wild ride.
and finally, here’s some honorable mentions, at the end here because i didn’t love them. but you might!
Just Like Home by Sarah Gailey (haunted house personified, exploration of dysfunctional family)
The Seep by Chana Porter (post-apocalyptic quest)
Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant (killer mermaids)
Nothing but Blackened Teeth by Cassandra Khaw (creepy mansion, corpse bride)

Why the Success of “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (2022) Is Concerning
If you haven’t seen Everything Everywhere All at Once, you’ve probably at least heard of it, because it’s one of this year’s most talked about movies so far. There’s a lot of reasons why, but perhaps the biggest reason of all is that this movie is the independent film studio A24’s first movie to ever reach 100 million dollars at the global box office.
That sounds pretty great, I hear you say. How on earth could this be concerning?
Well, believe it or not, every film studio was once a small studio…or, at least, smaller than they are now. And it’s pretty common knowledge that the smaller a studio is, the more bold and creative the artists working for that studio will be allowed to be. There was once a time when your average Disney-produced movie was just as much about originality and unique artistic voices as it was about making money.
Well, for the last decade or so, A24 has been one of those small studios who champions new voices with unique, often risky ideas for movies. If you’re unfamiliar with A24’s entire lineup of movies, I encourage you to go look it up—you will be hard-pressed to find a more diverse list—The Bling Ring, The Spectacular Now, Locke, Laggies, A Most Violent Year, Son of a Gun, Barely Lethal, End of the Tour, Mississippi Grind, Room, Ex Machina, Free Fire, Green Room, Good Time, Lady Bird, Disaster Artist, Last Movie Star, Hot Summer Nights, The Florida Project, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Eighth Grade, Slice, Mid90s, Never Goin’ Back, Under the Silver Lake, Lighthouse, Uncut Gems, The Green Knight, Val, X, Everything Everywhere…I could go on forever, the point is, these are all really unique and vastly different movies.
The ones I just listed are all the ones I’ve currently seen. Do I love all of them? No. I don’t even like some of them, but almost all of them have at least one scene or other aspect that stood out to me and has stuck with me since I watched it. In my opinion, Never Goin’ Back is not a good movie, but it is a weird freaking movie and a couple of those especially weird scenes still pop into my head once in a while even though it’s been years since I watched it. Meanwhile, how many movies have I seen between then and now that I’ve completely forgotten? A good handful, that’s for sure.
I’m going to such great lengths to establish how A24 fits into the contemporary film world and how its movies have affected me personally because for the first time ever I suddenly have reason to worry it won’t always be this way. With Everything Everywhere, A24 has its first 100-million-dollar movie. I don’t think it is unrealistic or unnecessary to start asking ourselves: are they going to want to repeat this phenomenon? What lengths are they going to be willing to go to repeat this phenomenon? Are they going to start saying “no” to movies that, five years ago, they would have said “yes” to do, on the basis that they don’t believe those movies will make them 100 million more dollars?
While A24 movies are mostly offbeat and arthouse-y it’s not entirely impossible to predict which of their movies might make more money or at least generate more conversation. Uncut Gems was a rare example of Adam Sandler straying from comedy, and as has happened before, that got people talking about his underappreciated dramatic talent. Everything Everywhere may be a trippy, unusual experience, but at its core, it’s just a multiverse movie, and thanks to Spider-Man: No Way Home and other recent Marvel releases, the multiverse is a hot concept right now.
It’s just not difficult for me to imagine the leaders of A24 picking and choosing what projects to fund with the mindset of “what will make us more successful?” as opposed to “what deserves a chance based on creativity and originality?” I just want this studio to always be a small studio, and I’m not sure that’s going to be possible. The next several years will slowly but surely reveal their true intentions, I think.
What do you think? Am I being paranoid? Let me know if you feel so inclined.

Spelljammer Reveal Trippy New Vid, Talk ‘Abyssal Trip’
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
Interview by Billy Goate
Tumblr media
Cover Art by Aaron Cahill
Our week of big interviews continues as we meet up with the ethereal doom outfit from Stockholm SPELLJAMMER and premiere a new music video, from their just released second LP, dropped only weeks ago on RidingEasy Records and now the number one album on the Doom Charts.
'Abyssal Trip' (2021) is an enthralling listen from edge to center, with lavish textures, deep thematic content, and unforgettably emotive atmosphere that will stick with you for life. Enjoy it as you read the revealing conversation with Niklas Olsson (guitar, vox) and Robert Sörling (guitar) that follows as we unpack their steller new spin, talk nerdy gear shit, and contemplate humanity's fate.
And now, Doomed & Stoned is pleased to bring you the world premiere of the brand new video for that epic third track, "Among The Holy."
Give ear...
Spelljammer - Among The Holy (music video)
You guys have been a band now for damn near 15 years, maybe longer. Most bands don't make it past two years! What is the "key" to the band staying together for so long and continuing to find inspiration for creating new music?
Rob: I don’t think it’s been 15 years just yet but we are getting there, haha. None the less - that’s a really interesting question! Nik and I started the band much because we share the same taste in music, film and, well, art in general. I think that's the core keeping it all together. Also, there have been a few constellations of band members over the years, all with their own dynamic. I think these kinds of changes, and the new directions of the music because of that, is part of the inspiration. Maybe another reason is that we all live in different cities and because of that sometimes a lot of time passes between rehearsals, writing sessions and such, making us always craving for new Spelljammer jams and songs.
Nik: The craving yes. And another reason I think is the fact that we’ve never really been in a rush to get anywhere. Anything Spelljammer, the music included, takes time. If we had been set on making it, this thing probably would have fallen apart a long time ago.
Abyssal Trip by Spelljammer
How did the theme for Abyssal Trip originate?
Nik: I have always been more drawn to the feelings or emotions you get from a riff or piece of music than to any theme of a lyric. But I would say that any themes came in at the lyrics state, which is at the end of the process. But the themes aren’t that specific to any of the albums. I think I cast a pretty wide net in the beginning and stuck to it. For the next album perhaps we will venture more into unchartered waters. We’ll see.
What fascinates you about the Great Abyss of the ocean?
Nik: I totally get that the word abyss conjures up images of ocean trenches and, yes, the ocean is a fascinating and to a large extent undiscovered place. However, when I wrote that I wasn’t necessarily thinking of the ocean but more the abyss of our own minds. But I think it’s a word that evokes many things, like despair and doom, and it is of course totally open to interpretation.
Is mankind doomed or do we have time to correct our course?
Nik: I’m not as pessimistic of a person as the lyrics may suggest. I think we will be here on earth for a long time. Mankind is clever (perhaps too clever for her own good) even if there are a lot of people hell-bent on trying to screw up everything for everybody else.
Rob: Yes, and considering how ignorant and careless (some) people are acting during this pandemic, at least over here, makes you wonder if there’s any hope at all.
Nik: People are the worst. Ultimately, though, none of it matters because we’re all doomed.
Tumblr media
Have you guys seen any good movies/documentaries or read any good books lately that inspired you or otherwise challenged your thinking about life, the present, or the future?
Rob: I can’t say that I’ve seen or read anything recently that challenged me significantly, I guess I’m getting too old to be that overwhelmed haha. The film A Ghost Story though was kind of cool though because it was different, slow and weird (in a good way), and for me it’s always inspiring to read/see/hear something that makes you think, "Man, I wish I had come up with that idea”.
Nik: Absolutely! Punch Drunk Love, Moon, and Office Space are definitely movies like that. I have watched so many movies and series through this pandemic and I can’t remember any of them right now. But I did just notice that there is a season 3 of Loudermilk on HBO! If you haven’t already, see it! I’m currently reading "Homeward Bound, The Life of Paul Simon” by Peter Ames Carlin. It’s a good read about one of my favorite musicians.
For recording this album, what kind of gear did you use and what production/engineering considerations did you have to take into account?
Rob: Since we did a remote recording in the countryside we had to use whatever stuff that we could fit into a couple of cars. I have a couple of old audio interfaces that I linked for a total of 16 channels. I also have a small collection of mics (nothing fancy) and we used them all and the rest was borrowed. We set up the drums in the living room and put the guitar and bass rigs as far away as we could (the adjacent rooms) to avoid bleed and just focused on getting the rhythm tracks done. The goal was to get us all in the same room and to catch the vibe from a relaxed rehearsal kind of situation. The bass rig used was a Orange Terror Bass and an Ampeg SVT 810 and the guitar was tracked through a Reval Mark I and/or Orange TH-100 and a Orange PPC 412. Of course there’s always some unforeseen problem lurking and this time it was the electricity in the old country house.
Nik: I don’t use many effects, just a fuzz. For this one I used a Supercollider from Earthbound Audio. It is exactly what the name suggests. That’s all you need really.
The album cover is amazing! It reminds me, in some strange way, of the creature in the old B-movie Robot Monster (1953). What's the story behind the artwork?
Nik: It definitely has a B-movie vibe that I really like. I’m afraid I can’t really tell you much about it other than the artist name is Aaron Cahill and you can find his stuff on Instagram under the name nghbrs.
I filmed your first US appearance at Psycho Las Vegas in 2016. Fans want to know: do you have ambitions of returning to North America once the world sorts out this pandemic?
Rob: Yes, that’s our first and only US appearance so far and we wouldn’t mind at all returning to Vegas or any other part of the US. For now it’s really hard making any plans at all. In fact, you would think that this kind of isolation would enhance creativity, and maybe for some it does, but for us it’s actually been the most unproductive period so far for Spelljammer. So I’m hoping that by the time this thing blows over we get the inspiration back both for writing/recording new music, and in time hopefully revisiting the US!
Nik: I agree, playing at Psycho Las Vegas was a blast. I hope we get another opportunity to come back some day.

Some Buzz
“The vastness of everything is something that I think about a lot,” says Spelljammer bassist/vocalist Niklas Olsson. And it certainly shows in both the expansive, sludgy sounds and contemplative lyrics of the Stockholm, Sweden based trio. Following a 5-year break between their previous album, Ancient of Days — perhaps fittingly spent pondering said vastness — Spelljammer is back with an album that perfectly bridges the band’s earlier desert rock leanings and their later massive, slow-burning riffs.
'Abyssal Trip' (note: carefully reread that album title) takes its moniker from the perpetually dark, cold, oxygen-free zone at the bottom of the ocean. The 6-song, 44-minute album fittingly embodies that bleak realm with rumbling, oozing guitars intercut with dramatic melodic interludes. The songs take their time to unfurl, making them even more hypnotic. Likewise, the lyrics take a poetic approach to establishing the sonic scenery.
“The lyrical themes we address, like the ultimate doom of man, and the search and longing for new and better worlds, are still there,” Olsson says. “The concept of something undiscovered out there in vast emptiness is pretty much always present.”
Tumblr media
The recording process for Abyssal Trip differs from previous releases in that the band — guitarist Robert Sörling, drummer Jonatan Rimsbo and Olsson — opted to capture the performances while holed up in the mental bathysphere of a house in the countryside near Stockholm. “The songs benefitted from the relaxed environment of being away from everything,” Olsson explains. Indeed, the album sounds confident and meticulously arranged, afforded by the band’s isolation. Sörling mixed the album and it was mastered by Monolord drummer Esben Willems at Berserk Audio.
Album opener “Bellwether” begins dramatically with a very slow, nearly minute-long fade in of rumbling distortion setting the stage for heavily distorted bass and guitar plucking out the lugubrious riff for another minute and a half before the drums begin, and likewise equally as long before vocals gurgle to the surface. “Lake” abruptly shifts gears, opening with an unusually fast gallop before rupturing into thundering doom that soon drops into a clean-tone Middle Eastern melodic breakdown.
The title track serves as the album centerpiece, opening with ominous film dialogue about blood sacrifice that launches into pummeling, detuned guitars rumbling over gut-punching drums and howling vocals hearkening to the proto-sludge of Pink Floyd’s “The Nile Song.” The dynamic relents briefly for a slow building clean guitar melody before all instruments lock into a jerking riff topped off by a trilling Iommi style lead. Throughout, Abyssal Trip is, just like its title suggests, an epic tour through desolate zones which yields much to discover.

Serial Experiments Lain: A Guide to Proper Mindfucking Procedures
(I finished Lain! I originally wrote here “will jot down some thoughts, maybe I can write a full essay sometime later”, reviewing it now this is absolutely a full essay, so scratch that lets commit)
Serial Experiments Lain is a starring member of the pantheon of 90′s “mindfuck” anime, those shows that supposedly blow the mind with esoteric philosophy and trippy visuals. Current-me has frequently sallied against this notion, particularly the idea that any of these shows (or most any show) are that philosophically dense - the nature of television & film is such that they almost never are, which is normally a good thing. But young-me watched Lain around the same time I watched the original Ghost in the Shell film, and I had that halcyon experience for both: intriguing, but also on the border of incomprehensibility. As such I held little opinion of either of them, not trusting my hazy memories, until I saw them again much later. Ghost in the Shell, by the way, is a terrible, painfully boring film, precisely because it tries to be that philosophy-mindfuck concept. Which can work when you are young and stupid, but once you have read literally anything, anything at all, a single op-ed will do, about “AI and Identity” or the like its ideas are trite and shallow while it has sacrificed characterization, plot, and pacing in pursuit of that failed dream.
Lain on the other hand is a brilliant show that succeeds at that concept far better than media like GitS ever could precisely by not even trying to be that. The thematic foundation of Lain is actually quite simple; the openness & inter-connectivity of the internet is not just utilitarian but can offer a way of living that is seemingly brimming with unlimited freedom and emancipatory potential, but that promise is found fundamentally to be a hollow (ahem) shell, with reality being not only inescapable but desirably so. Or something like that? I mean maybe. Lain never spends that much time on answers, because those are boring; instead focusing on the actual experience of the titular Lain herself as she navigates these concepts. All of the content it throws out are lateral moves around this core, details to mull over as opposed to attempts to “go deeper”, which makes it not-that-hard to follow once you understand that is what is happening. There is even a scene where the, let’s say “villain”, tries to go full-philosophy on Lain: who is the real her? What is identity anyway? Plays that whole entire hand, and she replies:
Tumblr media
Which, given that those themes are absolutely the themes of GitS, made me laugh out loud and yes is 50% of why I am comparing them. I am certainly not saying that Lain doesn’t have philosophical concepts, it clearly does in spades. Stitching those concepts together into a grand thesis, however, is just not the focus.
What is Lain’s focus is mood, and I have never seen a show use so many varied animation concepts and narrative approaches all towards capturing a singular mood; that of the free-wheeling hacker-for-truth aesthetic of the early internet. It is of course famously filled with glitchy shots of Lain flickering on CRT monitors and horror-shadowy power lines, damn does it have so many shots of power lines. But that is covered ground - instead I want to note how often the narrative approach itself just goes off the walls in service of its goals. Episode 9 is the peak of that approach, where scattered throughout the episode is a fully-fledged documentary that starts with the Roswell incident, which it then admits is fake, nevermind! before pivoting to discourse about Schumann Resonances and the Earth as a decentralized Neural Net and...
Tumblr media
Just a screenshot from an anime here folks! Vannevar Bush better have a Danbooru tag
All of this information is “true” by the way, as in real concepts and thinkers and crackpot ideas...until the end, when suddenly its someone from Tachibana Labs adding Schumann Resonance Integration to the 6th Protocol and wait-a-second that’s the show-canon, Tachibana Labs isn't real. As a ~youth~ you might be foolish enough to try to figure out how say ELF bands might be critical to understanding the plot of Lain, which is a classic “philosophy mindfuck” mistake; its all bullshit, the ideas only matter in the most loose way that does not require understanding them. Yet, this is *exactly* what that early hacker internet felt like; crazy ideas being stitched together from low-pixel edited docu-footage repurposed to utopian futures or secret conspiracies, and by sliding this stream-of-consciousness braindump right into the canon of the show it makes Lain feel like a perfect simulacra of that age. To spend any amount of the runtime of an episode on this and to actually pull it off is queering the madness/genius binary in the hottest way.
The reason Lain can pull this off is its other source of strength I alluded too - all of these visual elements are in service of a very human story, that of Lain trying to figure out her place in the world. And this arc hits one of my sweet spots for media, what I have called the “multifaceted arc” in the past, where instead of a show having multiple independent arcs for characters it instead has one seemingly-completed arc that proceeds to be refracted, challenged, and altered over the run of a show. I mentioned in my previous Lain essay how the show was using the visual language of exposed skin to communicate Lain’s digital emancipation, becoming Lain of the Wired. In those early episodes that is what is happening, and this process peaks around the halfway point with a confident, powerful Lain. She spends much of episode 6 looking like some variation of this:
Tumblr media
Total badass. That confidence and power then proceeds to be abused, manipulated, revealed as a false identity, and then stripped away over the latter half of the show - being Lain of the Wired turns out to be a curse as much as a blessing, and for the very human reasons of the connections to real people she loses through that process. This emotional core does an amazing job of keeping you grounded - in the same episode as that conspiracy documentary, Lain has her first kiss! (Its a bit of a dud, but still). And by the end of the show she is at the apogee of her digital empowerment, and also riddled with despair, loneliness, and in desperate need of help, looking like this:
Tumblr media
Note the withdrawn pose and the positioning of Lain backgrounded and way below her friend in the frame, to imply a state of weakness despite her capabilities. That is some classic visual language by the way: no crazy shot effects, no weird narrative devices, just straightforward emotional communication. Lain spends 50% of its runtime going full avant garde, but never (okay, rarely) lets that overwhelm its arc, and threads the needle to make that arc one of the deeper and more moving arcs I've seen in a show.
Serial Experiments Lain is far from perfect, despite all the praise I just put on it; Episode 6 for example has some dumb midichlorian-style “you are trying to explain something no one needs an explanation for” plot, and half of the crazy visual effects are compensating for the fact that its budget was like 10 dollars. But it peaks far exceed its valleys, and I am exceedingly happy to have watched it; I have always struggled to name my “Number 5″ on my top 5 Anime list with a lot of contenders for the slot, but Lain might have just snagged the title.
(Which would make my top 5 list *entirely* composed of anime from the second half of the 90′s, and not due to nostalgia as I only saw the majority of them in the past few years. Certainly a question worth answering, but for another time...)

DANIEL ISN’T REAL... but I’m so very glad this film exists.
After dealing with increasing anxiety and fearing a grip on reality, a college freshman turns to his childhood imaginary friend for comfort and confidence boosting… only to realize that his much cooler and carefree pretend buddy has an unsettling violent darkness about him. Could Daniel possibly be something more than a figment of his imagination?
youtube
DANIEL ISN’T REAL is an utterly surreal fever dream, channeling the best in cosmic horror, body horror, and psychological horror while also taking a bold look at deeper issues. It comes from Elijah Wood’s SpectreVision imprint, the same company that gave us such gems as MANDY, A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT, and COLOR OUT OF SPACE...  and this one’s right up there with those modern classics. And you can watch it now on SHUDDER!
Full review and some seriously kickass poster art below:
Directed by Adam Egypt Mortimer (and based on Brian DeLeeuw’s book, In This Way I Was Saved), DANIEL ISN’T REAL is a wonderfully fantastical ride through fucked up subject matter. It tackles mental illness, trauma, dual nature, identity, male toxicity, and empathy… with a good amount of Lovecraftian madness and trippy, yet terrifically disgusting Cronenberg-esque visuals thrown in for good measure.
Tumblr media
It’s an engaging story too, about a young man, Luke, overwhelmed with life as his mother’s mental health condition worsens. He’s dealing with that on top of everything else college kids go through, lack of confidence, anxiety, etc. There’s also a fear of his own sanity. He keeps hallucinating and blanking out. His therapist suggests that maybe he should try to tap into that creativity he had as a child, where he’d regularly play for hours on end with his imaginary friend, “Daniel”. Only things got very weird and unsettling the last time he played pretend with his fictional playmate.
Once Daniel re-enters his life, things start to change. Luke’s mother issues get better. Luke suddenly feels more confident in life. Luke is finally doing well with girls. Luke’s getting creative again with photography... and all of his problems seem to go away… Only Daniel seems to want more credit and recognition. And Daniel seems to be getting angrier. And that’s when things get really fucking messed up.
Tumblr media
This film is wonderfully acted by a mix of up-and-comers and veterans of the scene. Luke is played by Miles Robbins (HALLOWEEN 2018) and gives that immediate likeable and kind, yet also meek, portrayal that perfectly conveys what kind of a person that Luke is. There’s a lot of range in emotion in this performance, from hurt and confused to confident, to something else entirely. I always get a kick at seeing an actor completely flip their performance and style midway and totally embody something else, and this film has that and more.
Contrasting that likability and meekness is Daniel (played by Patrick Schwarzenegger, SCREAM QUEENS), the titular imaginary friend who’s pure Freudian Id. He’s cool, slick, charismatic, and always knows the right thing that Luke should say, or do, to get ahead. He’s helpful… when he wants to be… but he also has a lot of darkness. A scary darkness that seems to stem from… something else. Patrick excels when he taps into this dark alias. He’s evil as fuck. There’s a sinister glee in his manner. Epitome of “Chaotic Evil”. He’s such a great asshole. He really kicks it into gear when the audience fully know what we’re dealing with…
Tumblr media
Yet even then, nothing is over explained. And that’s the beauty of this film. There is no expository dialogue or wasted scene. Everything is laid out there and the actors just bring it. This film lives in a world of it’s own and the audience is a passenger for the unholy ride. It’s a very slick flick full of world building and the kind of outstanding performances that really make everything shine.
Rounding out the supporting cast is Luke’s troubled mother (veteran Mary Stuart Masterson, who powerfully played a similar and memorable role in BENNY & JUNE), Sasha Lane (HELLBOY) as the love interest, artist, and really, the heart and soul of the film, and Hannah Marks (DIRK GENTLY) as the other girl faced with Luke’s dark side. again, all perfectly played and perfectly cast, giving a much needed balance in this heavy film.
Tumblr media
And it’s a very heavy film. The story was a deeply personal one for Mortimer (as he explained to us in 2019, when he brought the film to the Montreal FANTASIA film fest). The director drew from his own experiences from his youth, when a friend was similarly dealing with mental health issues. Mortimer had to help him, because his friend was “falling off the rails”, with no one around really helping him out, “not friends or professionals”. He talked of his friend’s life being in ruins, and how it just “spiraled off into mania”.
That experience deeply impacted Mortimer. It was from this that Mortimer wanted to make a film about empathy and compassion for people going through severe mental illness issues. While Luke’s troubles stem from something more, the parallels are still there to people in real life going through non-otherworldy issues. The overall sense of helplessness, and a desire to be understood and taken seriously, is still there, and still a universal theme. Especially right now.
Tumblr media
This film also tackles a lot more than just matters of wellness. Mortimer also wanted the film to deal with the “increasing danger” young men are in these days. “The Dangers they face and the danger many are to themselves”.
Mortimer talked about them, “Living in a world where men have been driven insane by society. A society where many men are both the product and the villain of it.” A lot of this is seen on film when Luke battles for control with Daniel. Daniel representing that alpha and that Id. Luke grasping for control and trying to be that voice of compassion and reason. It’s a wonderful character study that is only heightened by the horror elements that come into play.
And yes, it’s an absolute horror fan’s delight and it’s visually stunning to boot, mixing psychological & psychedelic horror together. It felt like I was watching HELLRAISER again for the first time, but if that film was shoved in a blender with FIGHT CLUB, JACOB’S LADDER, and copious amounts of mind altering drugs. But comparing it to anything else does no justice to the wholly original eye-gasmic feast set before us. I keep saying this, but it truly is an utterly wonderful surreal fever dream. It’s so very layered and out there.
Tumblr media
It’s refreshing to see new films like this come about with something to say and looking as great as it does. Yes, this film looks very different from most things that are currently out there, with it’s violet texture throughout, and otherworldly feel. Mortimer, who came from a music video background, wanted his second feature to have a distinct look to it, saying that the “violet hue throughout had a very futuristic and contemporary colour about it”. He wanted to create the feeling of a manic episode, and overwhelm the viewer with colours and density.
And he totally does. It’s such a beautiful looking film, and one you’ll definitely go back to just to soak in the wonderful hypnotic visuals. Much like MANDY, from the year before, DANIEL is a cinematic treat for your eyeballs.
And there’s also some deeply messed up visuals that mix in with that beauty. The FX on a whole are amazingly bizarre. There are visuals that are so jaw-droppingly good that you’ll permanently have them etched in your brain. It’s the kind of film where you’re watching and you immediately want to rewind and see that scene again.
Tumblr media
From faces being merged into each other in a pink tentacled mess of VIDEODROME-esque flesh, to other visages literally being mangled like putty! Pure body terror. People crawling into other people’s mouths– I could go on, but I don’t want to spoil it. It’s icky and wonderful all at once.
And I can’t go on about the FX without mentioning the nightmarish and hellish creature design by Martin Astles (who also worked on the brutal and classic nightmare fuel that is EVENT HORIZON). The creature FX are so fucking out there, each very distinct and very memorable. The kind of things that if you confronted them in real life you’d be quick to claw them out your own eyes.
One beast looks like a hellish death beast with a fleshy castle for a head-- an absolute architectural artifice. Mortimer said they attempted to convey that a whole universe was in its face, and it existed outside space and time. Another Face looking like piercing bullets poking through the flesh and protruding from his cheeks, like a moment frozen in time. They’re all so freakishly creative and disturbing. I can’t even describe them right. I’m not sure I want to, but they’re seared into my mind. Body Horror and Cosmic Horror at their best.
Tumblr media
In addition to the visuals, this film also brings it on the sound design and score front. It’s got an incredible score by Warp Records act Clark. It contains synthy goodness along with manipulations of actual orchestral pieces. And it was Clark’s first time working on a film score, something Mortimer preferred.
He wanted someone that wasn’t used to working on horror films, or films in general, so they’d throw everything they had into it from the get go. Mortimer told Clark to make it sound like Bernard Herrmann got stuck in some horrible industrial accident. A relentless sonic assault that tries to capture that same feel that Clint Mansell did with REQUIEM FOR A DREAM. The results are a superb original work of music that completely enhances and already spectacular looking film.
Tumblr media
I was a fan of Mortimer’s SOME KIND OF HATE when I caught it six years ago at FANTASIA FEST, but DANIEL is an entirely different beast and next level filmmaking. He’s easily grown as a filmmaker and I’m totally on board to see more. I can’t wait to see what he tackles next, because DANIEL was easily one of my top Fantasia picks for 2019.
DANIEL ISN’T REAL is one of those dark films that will most likely be seen as a cult classic in a few years, right up there with DONNIE DARKO and movies of a similar ilk. It’s full of so much imagination and gusto, all while tackling important issues and core themes. All that and it remains highly watchable and engaging. It’ll satisfy any horror junkie while also winning over fans of thought provoking art. Daniel isn’t real, but I’m glad it exists.
-Theo Radomski, Movies Rot Brains
Seriously how fucking awesome are these posters?  Why can’t more horror films hire the people that made these posters? Why can’t film in general hire these people to make better promo art?

Note
You guys are friendship goals how do you make internet friends saph
okay story time this is the progression of mine and @papesdontsellthemselves friendship (complete with pictures)
so once upon a time (actually it was november of last year) i was a Sad high school senior drowning my sorrows in my tumblr account as newsies royalty while i stressed over my college applications and auditions. most of my pastimes included 1. writing shitty fics 2. reading good fics and 3. listening to bad music from 2012. and i happened to stumble upon some newsies pics as one does by Someone called @papesdontsellthemselves or, as was listed in the bio “Mikey”
nevertheless i binge read all of them at approximately 2am on a school night and probably fell asleep in ap euro the next morning. i very much liked his fics. they were slappy. and i started to stalk his account, as any normal person would.
and once or twice or several times, as any person who runs out of ideas does, he asked for prompt requests. and me, being a sad fangirl of this poor bois account, decided to send him some. (he still has one that he never answered) and he wrote a few of them. this one was my favorite go read it (i think i inspired this one)
and then one day i opened my tumblr acc and THIS was waiting for me:
Tumblr media
and i think i was like KJHSJHASLHJGDSLKH WH
then you know some time went by as time does and we sort of awkwardly coexisted. i actually was within like 10 minutes of him for a college audition before we knew each other that was pretty wild.
and then
the fateful day
i was sitting in ap stats, bored out of my mind, and decided to ignore the lesson on z scores or whatever it was cause what the fuck else are you supposed to do in ap stats and go on tumblr (seriously do not take ap stats its terrible, its an acid trip, i barely passed that class) and i had a message waiting for me from the one and only @papesdontsellthemselves that said something like:
“lol sorry to bother you chief but how to you put your tag lists on your pics so they dont take forever ooo sorry!!”
and i was like ssksksksjskskjsk why is tumblr royalty @papesdontsellthemselves talking to me, a lowly peasant, and i may have freaked out for a hot sec but then i responded something like
“i have it in a google doc and then hit the down arrow and the return key really fast lol”
(only recently he revealed to me that he didnt actually give a shit about my tag list (r00d) and that he just wanted an excuse to talk to me and That was what he came up with and he screamed after he sent the message cause he was so scared. also he was in theater with his weird shoeless teacher not paying attention. we’re good students i promise.)
and then we got to Talking and we just didnt Stop talking? like i told him about jeff, my shitty english teacher and he told me about his theater teacher who made them do 9/11 shakespeare and we bonded and then we sent each other pictures of our dogs:
Tumblr media
mikeys dog, leela (aka leeks Big Chonk) ^^
Tumblr media
my dog, lacey ^^
and we also went through The Awkward Stage
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but then
a miracle happened
twas christmas eve, about like idk 3pm and the two of us were Awkwardly Conversing as awkward internet friends do and i was getting changed for christmas eve dinner (cause my family Extra and you have to be Fancy or face the Wrath of the Elders) and I'm digging through my closet looking for something Presentable when discover The Pencil Skirt.
it twas a rather unsuspecting article, green wool with faint plaid stripes, and hand-me-down from some aunt, and i decided to put it on because i had limited fancy clothes and didnt wanna do a repeat from a previous year. so i added my One White Button Down Shirt and some black dance tights and called it a day.
so then me, being me, was messaging mikey and said (keep in mind were still practically strangers and had been barely talking for a week):
“wow i actually look kinda hot right now like maybe someone would bang me. like, I'm not into that, but I look good enough that someone might consider it.”
yes
me, an asexual, said that to a total stranger on the internet.
what were you Thinking saph.
truly, i have no idea.
but for some reason, instead of being scared away (like a normal sane person should be) mikey laughed and we began calling each other daddy. i dont know okay, it was a wild experience. I'm not sure if it actually happened.
so, my skirt became The Daddy Skirt, a tragic symbol of our strange friendship, and the two of us exited the Awkward Stage.
truly it was an exciting time:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and then we gave each other nicknames. the sappy kind not the cursed kind. mikey was bean cause he was a coffee bean and cocoa bean addict. and i was originally shrub and then bear and finally peanut. im not sure why. he isn't either.
boi also Literally guessed my real name. like straight up. and i was like “o word.” it was trippy.
AND THEN twas a cold february day when we decided to exchange faces. i send him a picture of me eating a christmas tree. he sent me a picture of him in his kitchen wearing sun glasses frat boy posing. truly iconic.
we also liked to look up weird things late at night and have revelations about dumb shit, as seen by these Unexplained Screenshots i have on my phone:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
yes those are real screenshots
then we decided to finally talk on instagram instead of this hell site and i was exposed to mikeys finsta *shudder*
nothing much else interesting happened until: College *dun dun dunnnnnn*
(except for that one time i had a mental breakdown at 1am and he drove home form some party to ig call me and tell me about the time his dog ended up in solitary confinement. a true g)
so for Safety Reasons, i finally gave milky my number when i got to school and we started texting and Facetiming which was a Trip.
i also sent him a Box of Cursed Content. he tried to send the box back to me in october and it still hasn't arrived. we think it may be in antarctica.
and then we tried to coordinate to meet up like three (3) separate times before We Got Lucky, the Stars Aligned, and we held hands in the back of an a&f
Tumblr media
(we also hugged in a nordstrom in like the Fancy Clothes Section and the lady thought we were definitely dating cause we took pics of us hugging in the fuckin mirror pillar. also i almost lost my wallet but thats another story.)
and next year our wild journey will continue (hopefully)
in conclusion i love mikey and this has been a sappy post

BnHA Chapter 193: The First
Previously on BnHA: Recovery Girl healed up Endeavor and he left the hospital with a shiny new scar. Hawks apologized for everything that happened and came up with some bullshit story about how they were probably spotted by villains earlier and made a tempting target and that’s why they were attacked. We also learned that he was more or less raised to become a hero from a young age and didn’t have much of a choice in the matter due to his talent. Endeavor headed on home where his kids were waiting to greet him. Although they were glad he was all right, Natsuo couldn’t hold back his anger toward Endeavor for tormenting Shouto and Rei for all those years, and for taking this long to finally get an attitude adjustment. Shouto acknowledged that Endeavor the hero was amazing, but he felt similarly to Natsuo as far as forgiving Endeavor the father. However, he said he was willing to wait and see, and that he knew better than anyone how “one small inspiration” could change a person. Endeavor thought about the epiphany he’d recently had that his children were the most important thing and that as a hero it was his duty to protect them. He also realized it was too late to apologize for all of his wrongdoings, and that the only thing he can do now is to move forward. That evening, Deku fell asleep after a long day of training, and dreamed of the past wielders of One for All, including the very first, All for One’s younger brother.
Today on BnHA: Deku finds himself in the midst of a wildly trippy dream sequence. First he sees the eight other wielders of OFA, and then his attention is drawn towards a flashback conversation between AFO and OFA the First. The First accuses AFO of using his quirk to fulfill his own selfish desires. AFO maintains he is using it for the good of the people. He demonstrates this by taking a mutation quirk from a man who wants to be rid of it, and bestowing a quirk upon a quirkless man who wanted a power of his own for self defense. The two men appear grateful, but the First says that AFO is really just creating an army of loyal servants to do his bidding. AFO says he intends to restore order to the world, and goes on to imprison his brother while he creates his army. Some time later he visits his younger brother and brags about how his dreams are becoming a reality, “just like in that comic we read together way back when.” The First says that AFO never finished the comic, and at the end of the story the Demon King lost to the Hero of Justice. AFO is all “well whatever IT’S NOT LIKE THIS IS A MANGA OR SOMETHING,” and then forces a quirk on OFA in order to entice him to join him. The scene fades, and Deku finds himself speaking with the First directly. He mentions something about them having passed “the point of singularity”, and tells Deku that he is not alone. Deku wakes up and finds that he’s somehow activated his quirk in his sleep and destroyed his room. He stares at his hand in shock and the chapter ends.
(As always, all comments not marked with an ETA are my mostly unspoiled reactions from my first readthrough of this chapter. I’ve read up through chapter 213 now, so any ETAs will reflect that. If you haven’t read that chapter, don’t read this recap! Don’t be like me and think “eh I’m probably good, I bet I know most of the big stuff by now” and get cocky and then live to regret it sob.)
so just a quick thing here -- I have unfortunately been spoiled for something big related to Deku, which is that he is going to be getting additional quirks. six, to be precise. and that’s all the details I saw before I clicked away (much too late), but unfortunately it was enough to put everything else together. because he is the ninth owner of OFA, and the second quirkless wielder, and the original dude’s quirk was OFA. but the other six wielders presumably had their own quirks, and so in hindsight it makes perfect sense that he would inherit not just their strength, but all of their abilities. and since it had been hinted at that there would be more OFA stuff coming up around this point in the manga, and also that Deku would be getting some sort of huge power-up, it wasn’t hard to put two and two together here. so yeah, I’m pretty sure that’s what all of this is eventually building up to
but oddly enough, that’s not even in my top 5 list of things that I’m actually excited for here! I don’t even care about him getting their abilities tbh, but I’m just curious whether he’ll be able to talk to them and have access to their memories! and for the first time it appears that yes, he will! which makes me so fucking excited you guys, because I have at least two of three fanfic ideas that have been permeating in my head for quite a while now which are very reliant on this concept. so I’m so fucking glad this panned out omfg
AND I WANT HIM TO MEET NANA OH MY GOD
ANYWAY!! LET’S START THIS THING ALREADY
so it appears that that fog or whatever that’s surrounding Deku is actually him not having a full body in this state, whatever he is. because his mouth is missing, he isn’t able to speak. but he can watch, and he can move his right hand
that’s so fucking clever and I love that eventually this ability will grow stronger and presumably he’ll be able to interact with the others and maybe even train with them??
right now he can’t move since he doesn’t have legs though
and there are still two figures that are complete mist and he can only see their silhouettes thus far
Tumblr media
kind of weird that these guys are out of order, no? because All Might is all the way back there for some reason. and I assume his form is less distinct than the others because he’s still alive? maybe? though that doesn’t make a lot of sense but idk, it’s a cartoon, people
also there’s a disappointing lack of female representation here, but unfortunately that seems to be par for the course recently. poor Shimura having to rep an entire gender because the mangaka decided that just six or seven dudes wasn’t enough. nope, better make it eight!
though I suppose the somewhat androgynous Shouto-looking one in the trench coat could be female, possibly. that would be pretty awesome. or one of the two shadows, though based on the silhouettes I’d say that’s less likely
(ETA: although the second-from-the-left one, though... I’d say there’s a shot. fingers crossed!)
and lastly, the missing one is clearly the original, who’s fighting AFO in your dream sequence as we speak! pay attention, Deku!!
oh shit you guys I’m so fucking hypppppped. more AFO stuff!!!
Tumblr media
and even though Deku has never seen his face, he recognizes his voice instantly and is thinking that he’ll never forget it
and so he’s finally realizing that the person AFO is talking to must be his brother, the First
Tumblr media
why is the First such a hot mess. look at that scraggly looking hair and outfit. looks like he just rolled out of bed
Tumblr media
why would they be aware of your presence if it’s a flashback dream. have you never read a fucking manga before Deku
oh shit AFO is beckoning to some dudes and they’re appearing out of the flashback mist
Tumblr media
and you, being the kind soul you are, are going to “help” them both I suppose
also interesting that quirks were not called “quirks” at this point, but superpowers! taking more notes for that fic I mentioned!
First is running toward his big bro begging him not to do it and saying that once he does there’ll be no turning back
but he’s collapsing in a coughing fit oh shit
Tumblr media
OH MY GOD ARE WE ACTUALLY GOING TO SEE IT??? I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS HOLY SHIT
Tumblr media
DUUUUUUUUUUUUUDE
Tumblr media
so his quirk is gone! is he happy though?
and meanwhile the other guy has the defense he wanted so badly
Tumblr media
so far nothing about this seems that evil, but I’m sure the other shoe is going to drop any minute now
well he is implying that they both owe him a favor now, for starters
Tumblr media
and we know he’s going to go on to be the future kingpin of the underworld, so him acting all Godfather here is definitely on point
and they’re saying of course, and that they’ll never forget what he’s done for them
Tumblr media Tumblr media
sophistry is a super fancy word for a fallacious, intentionally deceiving argument, FYI. jesus Mangastream, put that fucking thesaurus away for a bit will ya. or am I the only plebe here who had to double check what that meant and everyone else already knew and is cool with it lol
AFO is acknowledging that he needs people who owe him a debt so he can know they’ll come through when he needs them
building up that loyal army of followers huh
but he says that by trying to deny him, First is also denying them of their happiness
but will they still be happy by the time you’re through with them? that remains to be seen
Tumblr media
already one hell of a god complex building up here
First says he’s just taking advantage of people’s vulnerabilities and using them and throwing them away after
yeah I’m inclined to agree with him lol. AFO your MO has been made abundantly clear already
what is this?!
Tumblr media
oh shit!
Tumblr media
-- IS THIS KUROGIRI!?!?!??!??!
lol that’s crazy right. that’s a crazy thought. but idk I’m still convinced that AFO and Kurogiri are very old friends, so it would not surprise me at all to see him running around in this timeline already. hell, he doesn’t even need to have the same quirk at this point; the warp quirk could just as easily be something that was given to him by AFO
(ETA: this is an absurd theory that I’m gonna continue to push until the end of my days you guys.)
so as Deku continues to watch, AFO is loftily monologuing about how his poor pathetic brother was born without a superpower
“without power, one cannot even assert their ideals”
but he says that even so, he still loves him. “you’re my only family after all”
oh shit is this when he makes the mistake of giving him OFA??
but the black fog is getting much more prominent all of a sudden? like, I don’t think we’re going to get to see this flashback play out in full
I swear to god, if Deku wakes up and it turns out someone is shaking him awake or something I’m gonna be so pissed at that person lol
oh shit nope, never mind, we’re just getting a scene change! EVEN BETTER OMG
Tumblr media
YOU GUYS
seriously you don’t understand, I have this plot bunny in my head that involves time travel and is tentatively set during the early days of quirks, and it also involves the past users of OFA and the concept of them passing on their memories as well as their power
so basically what I’m saying is this whole chapter thus far has been an absolute goldmine
does Deku even realize what he’s seeing here, though? whose narration is this
(ETA: I think that’s actually a paraphrase of something All Might said back in chapter 59, so we’re probably just being reminded of it.)
Tumblr media
you guysssss AFO’s origin story is so fucking metal oh my god I love it. I love this so much
YESSSSSSSS
Tumblr media
YESSSSS LOOK AT THIS MAGNETO BULLSHIT. LOOK AT HIM WITH HIS FUCKING ARMY HOLY SHIT
and now we’re transitioning again, this time to a dark cell
jesus christ AFO
Tumblr media
that’s your own fucking brother for christ’s sake?? what the hell do you have him locked up in, a bank vault? are you that concerned about his sickly ass somehow getting out? for fuck’s sake there’s not even a bed in here
First says he refuses to be manipulated by AFO, and AFO says it’s about time he gave up already
oh my god!!!
Tumblr media
OH MY FUCKING GOD THERE WAS A FUCKING RESISTANCE MOVEMENT YESSSSSSS
this is another thing I needed for my fic, fuck yes!? this worldbuilding is giving me life right now
(ETA: not that anyone cares, but despite my not shutting up about it, this isn’t something I’ll probably be writing any time soon. more likely I’ll spend the next five years or so outlining every last detail in my head, and then finally get inspired to write it only to flake out before the very last chapter hahaha sob. but it sure is fun to construct imaginary WIPs in your head though.)
so I’ll just assume that even though he thinks they were all killed, some of them survived! and continued the fight!
anyways
so AFO says he didn’t actually give the order to kill those people, and that his “friends” and followers simply did it on his behalf and made his desire to bring order into a reality
and he says he was happy beyond words. “I simply think it, and everyone takes action on my behalf”
so much fun being the god of your own world huh
HOLY SHIT
Tumblr media
WHAT THE FUCK AFO, WHY THE FUCK ARE YOUR EYES SO FUCKING CREEPY
oh my god I for real shuddered
(ETA: and I was so creeped out by his eyes that I didn’t notice this my first time around, but underneath his nose there... are those freckles?!)
but First, nerd that he is, says AFO only read up to volume 3, and that the story continued and eventually the hero won and defeated the demon king
Tumblr media
I like how Horikoshi clearly drew these in the style of the old timey American comics of the gold and silver ages
OH SHIT!!
Tumblr media
SFLHKSDLKF HERE IT IS!!!
DEKU’S REACHING OUT, BUT OF COURSE YOU CAN’T STOP IT, DEKU! AND EVEN IF YOU COULD, YOU’D UNDO THE ONE GOOD THING AFO EVER DID LOL
Tumblr media
YESSSSSS OH MY GOD I’M SO HYPED TO FINALLY SEE THIS MOMENT OH MY GOD
(ETA: there really is something fascinating about watching the moment when someone seals their own doom and doesn’t even know it. if only AFO had gotten himself an irony-understanding quirk.
also, this answers the question All Might raised in chapter 59 about whether or not AFO gave his brother the quirk out of pity/affection, or whether it was to control him. seems like it was mostly the latter, but seeing as he could have killed him but chose to keep him alive all this time instead, maybe there’s a little of the former there too. like, he wanted him to submit to him, but the reason he wanted it so badly was probably because some part of him wanted his little bro fighting by his side. that’s why he spent so long trying to convince him of his own free will before he finally went with this option instead. but little did he know...
also also! that just goes to show you how much OFA has leveled up over time, because this quirk was originally so weak that AFO picked it specifically because it was something that his “frail and starving” little brother would be able to handle. and look at it now. quirks. are. fucking. wild.)
and now the scene is fading!
AHHHH!LHLKlksdhflahks
Tumblr media
YES!! HE IS!! WHO’S TALKING!??
OH SNAP
Tumblr media
YOU KNOW, LIKE A LIAR
HOLY SHIT IT’S THE FIRST WHO’S TALKING!!
Tumblr media
YOU GUYS THE HYPE IS TOO MUCH I’M FUCKING LOSING IT HERE OH MY GODDDDDDD
“BUT YOU CAN ONLY MANAGE ABOUT 20%” HOLY SHIT DEKU FUCKING HURRY UP AND MASTER THE REST OF IT ALREADY AHHHHH
so the memories are the same as the powers and will come to him little by little? but why lol. with the powers I can understand, because his body can’t physically handle the strain
...well actually, thinking of it like that, maybe his mind can’t handle the strain of all this info dumping yet either, though
and the hands touching omgggg. the connection! the bond that they now share despite being separated by time. the same shared fate oh my god
there is so much more to this than All Might ever let on. he barely even scratched the surface. did he think about all of this before he made the decision to give this power to a 14-year-old? this is so much, though. holy shiiiit
(ETA: so a couple more things to add here! first, we now know that All Might apparently didn’t know shit about most of this, so he gets a pass for the most part. and that’s a relief, because there’s a limit to how irresponsible I can accept him being lol. at some point it becomes less of a gift and more of a burden. but he had no idea of the extent to which this would happen, because his own OFA experience was very different.
and second, I totally missed this the first time around, but “the point of singularity” which First refers to is something that was brought up by Seiji in chapter 166. basically it’s the whole “eventually quirks will evolve to the point where no one can fucking control them and it’ll be chaos” thing. I didn’t realize this would become an actual plot thing so soon, but this is something that’s come up again in the chapters I just got up to, and now I can kind of see what they meant. best of luck with that Deku.)
Tumblr media
HYPE AND FUCKING FEELS, COME ON THOUGH??
oh sweet moses
Tumblr media
this chapter is blessed
so now he’s charging in to Deku’s room and asking why he’s making so much noise
WHAT’S GOING ON WHY IS HE HAVING THIS REACTION
Tumblr media
OH SHIT
Tumblr media
holy fuck
is it weird my first thought was that I bet this exact same thing has happened to Katsuki in the past. accidental activation of your quirk in your sleep, destroying all of your precious All Might merch in the process
and is his hand all right!? his hand was the only thing he could move in the dream so I’m worried the power was concentrated there, and that’s his fucked up hand and he’s not supposed to use it oh man
what is this
Tumblr media
lol well actually I probably know the answer to that already huh
oh man. ohhh hhhhhhhh man
that was so intense. easily one of my favorite chapters ever. I said “oh my god” and “oh shit” so many fucking times lmao. that was fucking intense! it’s late and I have to get up early tomorrow but I’m gonna read the next one anyway because I need to see what kind of a conversation he has with All Might after this lol, and ALSO! TELL KATSUKI, YOU COWARD
(ETA: THEY DIDN’T but it’s okay because Kacchan realized something was up and took matters into his own hands! KEEP KACCHAN IN THE LOOP 2K19 IS ALIVE AND WELL.)
by the way, I haven’t done omakes for the last few chapters, but we actually crossed over into volume 21 back in chapter 189, so at some point I’ll have to go and find what I can from that volume and edit it into one of the upcoming recaps. this volume has way more bonus content than the last one, thanks to the presence of the Todoroki children as well as all of the class B kids finally making their appearance after all this time lol. so that should be fun to find out more about them.

The Official Lovelytonys Guide to Iron Man Comics
Not to toot my own horn, but I’m about to save some lives. Buckle up.
Six months ago, I was asked for comic recs. I’m posting those recs today. Why so long? Because I couldn’t just make a rec list, no, I’m too extra for that. I had to go and make, to the best of my ability and knowledge, my own entire personal guide to Iron Man comics. I also have a tendency to start projects and not do them. But I did this one! And now I share it with you.
For your assistance, I’m going to link this Comic Book Herald article which is a full Iron Man reading order (LIFESAVER) and has links to amazon to buy the collections & arcs being talked about if you are so inclined.
You can find comics on amazon, ebay, the marvel website or Marvel Digital Comics Store (you can buy digital versions of comics), or just find a local comic shop and see what they have. You can easily find any comic you want free to read online, but the websites are a little shady. I’ll leave it to your discretion.
Disclaimer: Remember that these are all my personal opinions. Often, they will not line up with popular opinions. You might really like stuff that I didn’t care for. You might dislike my favorites. You might agree with my opinions. If any comic fans read this and are offended by any of my opinions, please don’t be!! Opinions on comics are SO subjective, just find out what you like and stick to it. I just figured I’d lend my own personal helping hand for you get started, because doing so can be intimidating.
WITHOUT FURTHER ADO, let’s begin under the cut! (If you are on mobile...I am so, so sorry about this)
Short version (the recommendation-y part)
Recs because I like them:
Iron Man Volume 3 (1998)- #1-25 (my actual absolute FAVORITE RUN of all time and my number one recommendation. It’s by Kurt Busiek, Roger Stern, and Sean Chen), #26-30, #62-63, #73-78. Iron Man Volume 4 (2005) #1-35.  Invincible Iron Man (2008) spanned many years so you should read at least some, and it has many fans, but I am not one of them, so I’m not gonna rec too much. Issues #1-6 and its epilogue, #7, are worth a read and the arc spanning #8-19 is probably the best from the era, I would say that I enjoyed that arc. Next is Brian Michael Bendis’ stuff, which has a pretty bad rep and while I don’t hate it as much as others do, I wouldn’t say I love it. It is, however, the most recent completed run & important stuff happens, and there’s some good stuff here and there, so yeah. I don’t really have any specific recs from here...just read the whole thing and see what you get out of it or scroll down to the guide section and see the highlights I picked out. Invincible Iron Man (2015) #1-25, and Invincible Iron Man (2016) #1-600 (they changed the numbering halfway through, it’s not 600 issues it’s only I think 19).
Recs because important stuff happens even if I don’t necessarily like them:
Civil War I (occurs during the Iron Man run starting in 2005), Civil War II (occurs during Brian Michael Bendis era), Iron Man (2012) #9-17 “The Secret Origin of Tony Stark.”
Long version (the guide-y part)
First off, I’m going to tell you that my suggested starting points are Invincible Iron Man (1998) which was my starting point, and Invincible Iron Man (2005). Much more on those below.
I haven’t read Mr. Stark’s classic adventures yet because there’s a daunting number of them and I still need to find a starting point, so we’re gonna start with...
Volume 3 (1998):
Okay I have SO MUCH to say here because I’d die for this volume!! It’s considered by many to be nothing special but there’s a lot to appreciate if you’re a fan of Tony in the way that many are here on tumblr- caring about character development & character moments first and foremost. I’ll break down my favorites for ya
#1- does a good job of setting the tone for Tony and this era of Invincible Iron Man. Some nice Tony character details are in there. Volume 3 is started with Kurt Busiek writing (later joined by Roger Stern) and Sean Chen on pencils. I LOVED this team, this is my FAVORITE run of Iron Man that I’ve read, PLEASE read all 25 issues. I thought Busiek understood Tony really well and I just loved the way Chen drew Tony (and everything else), and their first issue is surprisingly enjoyable for mostly existing to set the groundwork for a fresh start.
#4-5- I think this is where the run starts to kick into gear. Tony’s on-and-off girlfriend for the era, Rumiko, is introduced and she’s fun (but as the years went on, deserved much better writing). Tony kicks some butt & is a hero.
#6- an awesome Iron Man/Black Widow team up. It shows a really nice friendship between Tony & Nat. Also, Nat kicks butt & it’s great
I’m recommending every issue that builds Tony’s relationship with Carol Danvers (at this time, she was Warbird, not Captain Marvel). #7, #11-12, #18, #19, #21, and #23-25. Their storyline details Tony’s endeavors to help Carol overcome alcoholism. At least read the Carol parts of the issues she’s only in a few panels of. Major highlight of the Iron Man comics I’ve read. Also- knowing this background will definitely make Civil War II have more weight
#8-12- Tony gets the actual daylights beaten out of him and then some, leading into a compelling 2-issue Mandarin arc, this then leads into an interesting 2-issue team up with Warbird that gives us an answer as to why his injuries were so bad. It hurts but it’s good
#13- an actually really compelling single-issue story that involves some trippy, creepy mind control stuff and takes a look into Tony’s head- specifically questioning whether or not being Iron Man has become an addiction. You can’t tell yet but I’m trying my hardest to not recommend every single issue
#26-30- The Mask in the Iron Man arc. This is the first issue without Busiek writing- Joe Quesada steps in and it’s good stuff. It’s also Sean Chen’s last arc. It starts with Tony punching a guy in the face to protect Rumiko but getting punched back and having to wear a nose splint- it’s really cute. Then Tony and Ru run into relationship problems. Then the Iron Man armor becomes sentient, basically falls in love with Tony, and kidnaps him on a remote island. Wait-what? Yeah, it’s really weird in hindsight, but while you’re reading it, it sure does pull you in. One of the biggest standouts of the whole era and something of an instant classic. Also, the first few pages of #31 give you a little aftermath.
#37-40- this wasn’t my favorite arc but I’m recommending it just because of how wild it ends up being. These were the days when IIM wasn’t afraid to have a big imagination. And I mean big, like, who thought of this? Well, Frank Tieri is writing at this point (he’s okay, not my favorite of the volume), and Alitha Martinez & Paul Ryan are on pencils (it’s fine, but you’ll miss Sean Chen) (you’ll always miss Sean Chen). Also, a major player in this arc is Tiberius Stone so maybe read it to know who he is.
#50- “Tinman”. Issue 50 was meant to be a place for new readers to jump in. Mike Grell & Michael Ryan are at the reigns as writer and artist. Grell’s characterization was fairly solid, my favorite next to Busiek in this era. His version of Tony is more in touch with his emotions, I guess, than some like to characterize him. Sometimes he gets aggressive when he’s angry but there’s also a lot of really sweet moments and they portray him as doing a lot of good, like funding a rehab/safehouse for kids on the street. Grell’s stories are generally grittier and more violent but Tony himself doesn’t really take a dark turn. Issue #50 has both action and a VERY SOFT Tony, definitely recommend it
#53-55- “Book of the Ten Rings”. Again, it’s grittier than the stuff that came before it, but it’s good. Once the main story wraps up, something really important happens at the end. Also, it’s important to note here for people that weren’t previously into comics that at this point, Pepper and Happy are a thing, not Pepper and Tony as seen in the MCU
#59-61- “In Shining Armor”. Tony travels back to Medieval times and it’s not exactly a good time for him but it’s a wild time for us. Gotta love a good old fashioned time travel arc
#62-63- “You Can’t Always Get”. Oh god PLEASE read this one, if you only listen to one of my post-Busiek & Chen recs this is the one, the Tony content is so precious
#73-78- “The Best Defense”. The arc detailing Tony’s journey to becoming Secretary of Defense because yes, that happened. A very interesting concept to watch Tony go through and one of the most notable stories in this era.
Volume 4 (2005):
This is the last of what I consider the Really Good Stuff (except for Civil War, but we’ll get there). These comics defined Tony Stark as we know him today, and you’ll notice that MCU Tony was definitely influenced by them. If you’re starting here, it’ll be Iron Man as you basically already know it. If you’re coming here off of Volume 3, then you’ll notice the tone of not just the stories but of Tony himself get darker. For whatever reason, writers looked at Tony and said “let’s find ways to bring his morals into question bc that’s Interesting!” It’s not bad (the Iron Man title, that is- Civil War is bad) but it doesn’t really reflect what came before it, I guess. I’m recommending all 35 issues bc why not but I’ll break it down for ya & make sure to point out my favorites
#1-6- “Extremis”. A must read. One of the most iconic Iron Man stories in 21st century comic history. It’s on everyone’s list. You are, as an Iron Man fan looking to get into IM comics, legally obligated to read this. This would also be the arc where I believe the MCU looked for inspiration for Tony characterization. Also Extremis obviously ended up in the MCU but it’s like way different in the MCU than in the source material
#7-12- “Execute Program”- Basically, Tony is screwed up post-Extremis. Poor guy. Please read this. Directly leads to Civil War…
Civil War (2006) #1-7- Ugh. So. Civil War. In my personal opinion- not a fan. I actually like the movie MUCH better and imo the movie is the way this should have been written. Unfortunately, you’ve gotta read it because it’s an important event. You’ll see people calling it “Tony Stark characterization murder” and THAT’S VALID. Like. Tony suddenly became...a villain?? literally the worst?? under the poorly written guise of “just doing what I have to do” but the stuff that happens….it just can’t be explained with “doing what I have to do”. Honestly it reads like the writers just wanted to pit Tony against Steve and didn’t care about keeping him in character. Tony basically had to be turned into a villain to make the story work because In-Character Tony would not have fit their needs. It sucks and I don’t want to recommend it but you have to read it because it affects so much that comes after it.
THE ONLY CIVIL WAR ANYTHING YOU SHOULD SERIOUSLY CONSIDER are tie ins and oneshots and I will tell you a couple
Invincible Iron Man #13-14- IIM’s CW tie ins. Issue 13 comes after CW #2, issue 14 after CW #5. Read these
Captain America/Iron Man: Casualties of War- oneshot to be read after Civil War #4. Tony offers Steve the chance to try and talk it out. Both explain their positions and a lot of comic history between them is brought up.
Civil War: The Confession: SO after CW, SPOILER SPOILER poor Steve is assassinated in Captain America #25 (it’s actually more wild than that bc superheroes don’t just die but whatever) and this is a oneshot with two halves, the first takes place after Steve is dead and is Tony-centric and I LITERALLY CRIED and the second takes place when Steve is imprisoned before he is killed. PLEASE read this
There’s more tie ins involving Tony that you should read but I’m sick of talking abt CW
BACK TO THE IRON MAN SOLO TITLE
Sooooo the title now changes from Invincible Iron Man to Iron Man: Director of SHIELD but it’s the same book
#15-18- It’s Tony’s first story arc as Director and it ends up being kind of wild actually
#21-28- ‘Haunted’. Starts out as a sort of murder mystery thing, spirals into something much bigger. Also, poor Tony is so screwed up in the head but what’s new. Definitely read this one
#29-32- ‘With Iron Hands’. Basically, an entire arc of Tony feeling guilty about his past?? Pretty much. There’s also a terrorist and a giant weapon and more fun stuff. The last you’ll see of Tony for the volume bc stuff goes down in the Secret Invasion event and War Machine takes over for the last 3 issues of the title. Wish I could be of help in regards to Secret Invasion, but I haven’t actually read it because I haven’t been able to find it. Just, idk, google search the plot of Secret Invasion like I did and you should be able to get by
Invincible Iron Man (2008) AKA Other Volume 4:
Okay lots of comics fans think this is one of the best Iron Man runs in history and I respect their opinions and perhaps you will share them but I’m gonna cut to the chase here: I am not one of those people. Look, I read all 62 issues so I have a fair opinion, and I’m just not a huge fan. Matt Fraction is writing and Salvador Larroca is drawing. In my experience, the stories drag on and it gets to the point where you’re just bored. I think I read the 89 issues of volume 3 faster than I read the 62 issues of this because I was just so bored with it. Also, I’m really not a fan of Larroca’s work on the book. I really disliked the way he drew Tony and the more I looked at it, it almost made me...uncomfortable? Some of his art is kind of gross imo. Plus, I didn’t love Fraction’s Tony characterization. I can’t quite articulate why, it just didn’t sit nicely w me. There were some moments where I thought “oh yeah that’s Correct” but many other moments where I thought “No Why Did You Write That”. He was good at writing some wild and intricate stories but sometimes I felt that character got lost in the midst of the action. That’s just me though, you might really like Fraction’s run, and there is some stuff worth pointing out.
#1-6- ‘The Five Nightmares’. A fairly iconic modern Iron Man story. Tony’s worst nightmare comes true when the son of Obadiah Stane uses Stark tech to cause absolutely horrific acts of terrorism. It gets pretty serious, but it sets the groundwork for this entire era of Iron Man. As far as Fraction stories go for me, it’s one of the better ones.
#7- Five Nightmares Epilogue. A team-up of sorts with Spider-Man that I actually genuinely think you should read, especially for the ending (and because Peter & Tony clearly wish they could be buddies again in this post-Civil War world).
#8-19- Okay it’s really long but I remember it stood out to me, all I remember is that it’s basically Tony Stark Brain Annihilation over the course of 12 issues and it hurts like heecckkk. Actually I’m gonna say definitely read this one. Also Rescue happens and that’s A Thing you should know about. Stuff gets fixed in the next arc, #20-24, but it’s not worth recommending imo so don’t read this if you’re gonna read it but if you’re not just know that SPOILER SPOILER Tony is fine except he accidentally erased Civil War from his memory (god I wish I could do that). SPOILER OVER
I think I’m gonna end it there for Fraction issues of interest. There’s probably more in there I should be recommending but I just. Can’t be bothered to comb through Fraction’s volume sorryyyyy I’m just not a fan
Iron Man (2012):
So this run is by Kieron Gillen and I don’t really want to recommend anything from it. I didn’t love it as a whole. Gillen laid way too heavily into the idea of “Tony Stark is a walking ego”. The stories were kind of interesting in theory but I thought the execution was mediocre for some reason. Although, not necessarily the art but specifically the coloring was nice- very vibrant. The actual art was by Greg Land who comic fans really seem to hate. I didn’t think his work on this was too bad idk. Again I don’t really want to recommend anything so there’s only one thing I’m putting on here and it’s:
#9-17- “The Secret Origin of Tony Stark”. So here’s the thing. Kieron Gillen said to himself “I need to do something that turns Tony Stark’s identity on its head. I need to redefine him”. And he actually kind of succeeded in that. And it’s actually annoying and it actually feels like something that should be retconned…. but hasn’t been?? And since it hasn’t been, it’s going to be important going forward so you should probably know about it. You could also just google it.
Invincible Iron (2015) by Man-Brian Michael Bendis
Yes, the infamous BMB. So, what’s the truth about his run on Iron Man? Is the amount of hate warranted? Well…that’ll be for you to decide. Personally, I think it was generally...meh. Not necessarily terrible just. Meh. Many fanboys act like this run is the bane of their existence and I don’t think I dislike it to that extent at all. I mean, it gets boring after a while, but the good moments are really enjoyable and I think it’s worth reading. Bendis’ characterization was sometimes weird because it felt notably inconsistent. However, the moments when he nailed it, he really did nail it. His Tony is a bit of a dork, a bit of a hot mess, a little vulnerable, and the moments when that’s at the forefront are great. There’s also some notable stuff going on here- Civil War 2 falls under this era (I hate it less than the first one but Marvel could do 50 Civil War events and I will probably not like any of them), and so does Riri Williams (who I love, just to get that opinion over with). Finding recs for this era is kind of weird for me because the things that stood out were almost never actual issues or stories, but rather specific character moments, so like, the volume is only 14 issues so tbh you can just trudge through them all and savor the good moments, but I’ll try to pull some recs out for ya
#2, #3- just for some character moments. These two are a part of a larger arc so it might be a little confusing to read them on their own but who cares
#4, #5- Tony fights ninjas and visits kids at a hospital and MJ Watson & Doctor Strange make appearances so it’s kinda cool idk
#9-11- only because you meet Miss Riri Williams, the other parts won’t make sense since it’s in the middle of an arc but eh. Honestly the actual story didn’t strike me as being very special so like unless you’re into it you can just skim for the parts that Riri is in since she’ll be important later
Aaaand CIVIL WAR 2
Civil War II #0-8- okay I don’t dislike it as strongly as I dislike the first CW but I still?? Don’t like it?? Like at all? But something really important to Tony’s stories happens at the end and Tony is one of the main characters in the event so like. You should read it. The main problem I remember is that the pace felt so slow. This event is Iron Man vs Captain Marvel which kinda hurt me bc of how much I loved them from 1998’s volume but it’s fine!! They never address their past in the actual event but there’s a tie-in that does so that’s good I guess. Just get through it idk what to tell you
Back to Invincible Iron Man
#12, #13, #14- tie-ins to Civil War II. #12 and #13 I think come after CW2 #2?? Maybe?? And I think #14 comes after CW2 #6?? Anyway #14 actually acknowledges Tony & Carol’s past so you should give that a read while going through the event.
Invincible Iron Man (2016)
Sooo some Serious Stuff happened in Civil War II that’s going to have an effect that lasts a while. I don’t wanna spoil it, though. When you do get to the end of CW2, you can rest assured that Tony will still have a major presence as a character in this title, but Riri Williams takes the spotlight. Opinions on her are mixed, I personally love her. This, like its 2015 sister, can honestly just be read all the way through, it’s only 19 issues, but I’ll try to find stuff. Also, Tony & Riri’s banter is ALWAYS golden so just read to enjoy it tbh. On we go!
#1, #2- gives you the background on Riri now that she’s taking center stage. She’s just so darn endearing.
#11- It’s basically an issue about everyone reflecting on how Tony is a good person and different from how the public perceives him. He holds orphaned babies from around the world. It’s good stuff.
#593-600- the numbering changed, there’s obviously not actually 600 issues lol. So yes this is kind of long for an arc, but it’s important because it resolves what happened to Tony in Civil War 2. I remember getting bored with it after a few issues, like it wasn’t bad I just remember it feeling slow. Idk. It’s important. Just read it.
Stuff that I don’t think is worth your time:
Invincible Iron Man volume 2 (1996)- I think Marvel was doing some kind of reboot or something because Iron Man’s origin was redone as well as The Hulk’s. It’s amazing how a run that was only 13 issues felt like such a large waste of my time. I didn’t think there was anything of note. I basically don’t even remember what happened in it. Also the sexualization of women was so casual and constant on top of the run not being particularly remarkable so yeah don’t waste your time
Superior Iron Man (2015)- I dislike the idea of this so much that I don’t even want to explain it ugh it’s a spin off of an event called Axis that involved some psychic type stuff that altered the personalities of those involved, boosting Tony’s worst qualities and making him evil. Marvel then decided to make a series about it and it’s only 9 issues but wow it’s amazing how hard it can be for me to get through 9 issues. I could barely read it I just so strongly dislike this idea ok so basically Evil Tony creates Extremis 3.0 which is an app that lets a person make themselves physically into the person they wish they were (In the pages of Axis, Tony personally made himself not an alcoholic because that’s not disrespecting an incredibly important character detail and there was one particularly awful panel of him drinking alcohol in front of a crowd of cheering people and saying “I missed you, sweetheart”). He is testing this app on San Francisco and effectively creates two classes of people- the “perfect” people who could access the app and the “imperfect” people who can’t and that goes about as well as you’d think. Then he makes it obscenely expensive to use which also goes about as well as you’d think. And more stuff happens. Here’s the thing. I’m sure many people thought the concept of a villainous Tony Stark was cool, but I just don’t like the implications of it. The way it’s written kind of gives the idea that, with his personality, Tony could easily become a villain. Given that some people already think of Tony Stark as a villain, reading it just made me cringe. And the WORST thing about it is that, while this is a result of Axis, it’s still Tony himself. According to the writers, he has “surrendered to his id and his legendary ego” (god I’m about to gag) after the mind-altering events of Axis brought those things out in him. Despite my qualms, was the book well-written? I will never be able to read it that objectively, so I can’t say. But clearly, as you can see by the size of this here rant (sorry), I dislike the very idea of it enough to put it on my “do not touch” list.
Okay. Wow. I finally did it. Wow. Six months and it’s done.
I am simply the mentor figure in your hero’s journey. As you get used to navigating comics and reading orders, you’ll find it easier to venture out, and there’s so many ways to go. A character crossed over into something you read and you liked them a lot? Look up their reading order. A writer or artist really impressed you? Do a google search and find what else they’ve worked on. There’s a whole world of comics out there. Go have some fun.
I leave you with 3 rules of being a comic fan:
1. No one hates comics more than comic book readers. We’re bitter because we care. You’ll be like a jaded war veteran who writes a thousand word rant about why a certain author’s mischaracterization of your fave offended you personally way faster than you’d think.
2. Follow the trail of what interests you and, while acknowledging what may be widely believed, proudly own your personal opinions.
3. It’s addictive. Embrace it. You start with one issue, and before you know it, you’ve read 200 issues and know 20 years of history on one character in less than a year. That might be how it goes for you. Just go with it.
Happy reading!

The Witch Twins
Transmitted from a college dorm room, Robi and Alen Predanič use performance art to create “mysterious VHS tapes you find in the attic of the old house you have just moved in to”.
Let’s start by you introducing yourselves and how you started working together  Alen: We are Robi and Alen Predanič aka The Witch Twins and we are from Slovenia. We are twins, 25 years old and we’ve been living in the same college dorm room for five years. This is where we created our own world. We make our own surreal, eccentric and colourful costumes and perform and pose in them, usually in our dorm room. I mostly shoot and edit the photos and Robi focuses on recording and editing the videos. When we’re finished we post it on Instagram. Robi went to college one year before me. We started listening to a lot of music from the 60s and 70s. We loved the warmness of the sound and visuals of the era. Inspired by that and other stuff like Harry Potter, we transformed our totally white room into a warm, psychedelic looking place. Throughout our childhood we were always in our bubble, creating something and escaping from real life.
Robi: We don’t take life very seriously and we like to challenge man-made social constructs such as gender norms. Two years ago, we came out. Shortly after, we started watching RuPaul’s Drag Race and because of that show we were inspired to experiment with wigs and DIY clothes. Our dorm room really played an important role in all of this, because it represented (and it still does) a safe, cosy and magical place where we could be authentic and creative. We actually used to dress up in women’s clothes when we were in kindergarten and when we were home alone. We stopped, because we realised that boys were not supposed to dress like that. Through the years we used to be terribly embarrassedabout our ‘weird’ past and our sexuality. It’s really liberating that the same thing that used to be such a burden, now makes us happy and proud.
What made you choose the medium of performance art to concentrate on? Robi: The reason I filmed myself in the first place was because of the cool VHS phone app. I realised I am comfortable in front of the camera while I’m in drag… it feels very natural to me. When I perform, I naturally gravitate towards randomness, humour and exaggeration. There are no rules in performance art, and I like that. Nobody is limiting me, I can express myself how I want to without being afraid of making mistakes.
Alen: Robi once asked me to join him in one of his videos. It was fun and it naturally became our thing. We also started doing photoshoots together. Performance art is not something that I was originally interested in, but it has become something that allows my costumes and fantasy to come to life.
Your work together has a very distinct aesthetic. How did this evolve?  Alen: We both like to be dramatic and ‘’larger than life’’. We are expressing ourselves freely and we just do whatever feels natural. Renovation of our dorm room has helped us to figure out our aesthetic. We developed a colour palette that was very 60s and 70s inspired and we customised everything in the room accordingly, it came out psychedelic, and colourful. We continued that vibe with our costumes, videos and photos. When we buy fabrics for our costumes, we like them to have interesting textures and beautiful colours. Right now, we are into looking like trippy life size toys - colourful and not too complex. We also like to believe that we are undercover aliens hiding our big alien heads underneath our headpieces. We both love dramatic silhouettes and big headpieces.
Robi: When it comes to our drag, we like unusual combinations. If we feel like combining facial hair with long painted nails or a short skirt with a headscarf, we just do it. I enjoy making genderless creatures. I like to make my hips, shoulders, “hair” and accessories big. I like to transform myself; to create the most fabulous version of myself and confuse people in the best way possible… When I edit the videos, I like to combine footage of us with the footage of mysterious buildings and beautiful nature. The videos we make can be described as mysterious VHS tapes you find in the attic of the old house you had just moved in.
I interpret your work as very spiritual. Is spirituality something that’s important or influential to you as individuals and/or your work? Robi:I love combining art and spirituality, because that’s the way to make meaningful art. I think by being authentically and fearlessly ourselves we send a message that is very much spiritual. I like my work to radiate a peaceful vibe and we do that through music we use in our videos for example. We also include messages of peace and love in our work by using symbols such as heart, sun and flower in our costumes, videos and dorm room décor. The warm edit of the pictures and the videos adds to the welcoming and peaceful fantasy, as well. My work is also spiritual for me, because it feeds my soul. I really enjoy what I do.
Alen: I love spirituality. I am determined to fulfil the highest and truest expression of myself and I know I can do that through art.
What has made you label yourself as a witch? Can you tell me a bit about this side of your creativity and how/if this influences your work as a duo? Alen: Witches fit perfectly in a great fantasy. I’ve always loved witches. We both love magic, mysterious things and places. For me, a witch represents that. I often do magic and fly on a broom when I sleep, in my dreams and I love it. Not to mention, that when we were about 8 years old, we used to believe that we were magicians. We made a secret alphabet, special objects and we performed special rituals.
Robi: We naturally adopted this label, but we don’t take the label very seriously. We also sometimes say that we’re aliens. We love creating fantasies and by labelling ourselves as witches or aliens we do just that. A witch also represents a metaphor for an unconventional person. We are modern day witches in that sense.
You use very pronounced, textural silhouettes and there is a strong sense of fantasy through theatre. A visualisation of your combined imaginations maybe... can you introduce us to this alternative world you have created? What feeds this? Robi: We are very compatible when it comes to working together creatively. Our work is heavily influenced by movies with exquisite fantasy worlds. Such worlds are mysterious, dreamy, magical and visually stunning. They consist of trippy characters, stunning costumes, detailed set designs, mysterious places and soul touching music. We’re talking about movies such as Shrek, Spirited Away, Alice in Wonderland, A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Wizard of Oz, Harry Potter, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory and Titanic. Also, horror movies such as The Ring and The Hills Have Eyes. I’m very inspired by operas and musicals as well, because of the dramatic body movements and the dramatic vibe.
Alen: Yes, what we do in the videos and the photos is visualisation of our combined imaginations. A lot of stuff that inspires our world is from our childhood. From a young age we were very aware of beautiful and magical things that surrounded us. Our kindergarten teachers were very creative and really made sure that we experienced a lot of magical moments. We were also encouraged to be creative by our grandma. Her house was always well decorated and we used to draw, make jewellery and decorative napkins from paper when we were at her house. We loved fantasy and magic and we still love it as much as we used to when we were kids. Major influence from many years ago are sticker albums and beautiful illustrations from children’s books.
When it comes to forming new concepts or beginning a new creative venture, how do you normally begin? Alen: We usually start with a colour palette, or with ideas about our headpieces. We then draw a sketch of the full costume. Sometimes we have a concept about the universe our costumes and characters come from, but most of the time, each of us just does our own thing and at the end it works out.
Can you tell us anything about what you’re working on right now? Robi: I am making a music video for an artist. We will soon start working on some of our last costumes in our college years era.  We are moving out in three months.
Alen: I am working on my music. I am also a singer and I’m looking forward to finally sharing my music. We are also working on prints of our work.
What does the future hold, where would you like to see your work in 5 years? Robi: I want to continue filming with my phone app and make costumes and short movies. I’m also interested in performing live. Alen and I want to make an exhibition and publish a picture book of our work.
Alen: I definitely see myself on stage, singing in crazy outfits. Robi and I will continue to collaborate creatively on different things, because we love to work together.

EXO Theories - The Timeline (short story version)
Okay, buckle up friends, for a wild ride through the EXO Theories.
This is the short story version enough to lead up to my theory on Tempo. I will divulge into each MV later, but this was the best I could do to lead up to my Tempo Theory. Some MVs have a deeper explanation than others but that’s because it’s important to note these key factors for Tempo
Warning!! This short story version is about 2,600~ words
Tempo Part 1 Theory:
https://pikakehimesama.tumblr.com/post/179706310237/exo-theories-tempo-pt1
In order for me to do my theory on Tempo, I must explain my theory of how the EXO universe is going down.
videos not important: Teaser #4 Kai, Teaser #6 Kai , Teaser #7 Sehun and Kai run and gun, Teaser #10 Pheonix Lay, Teaser, Teaser #13 Sehun What Is Love, Teaser #14 Kai What is Love, #15 Tao Metal, Teaser #21 Kai Baby Don’t Cry, Teaser #22 Lay and Sehun Angel, Teaser #23 Kai and friends, (unfortunately none of these teaser matter towards the story line because it’s just showcasing their dance. there was a theory that talked about how Kai was bringing all of them to earth but, i don’t think that one’s super plausible because of the contradicting evidence shown of not all members having a solo teaser #ripXiuChenLay ). What is Love MV (due to it being the compilation of all teasers and it’s easier to split up by Teaser rather than second by second of the MV), For Life MV (this the POV of the girl from the Wolf/Growl Era)
(also note place of the members was not chosen based on actual place of member as it was used to spell C.A.L.L M.E  B.A.B.Y #ripalltheoristduringPathcodes)
*Key things to note about the members: Kai is the beginning and the end of it all, Suho & D.O are the keys to solving the red force.
Another key note is that when the eclipse happens their powers are amplified. Also eclipses signify the start of an event or the end of an event.
(another note, I normally call EXO members by their given name, but in this case I went with their stage name to make it a bit easier to pinpoint names)
okay, so why is this the order I go with
1. MAMA
MAMA is the origin story. Every superhero we know has an origin story, telling about their past and the prophecy they must fulfill, well this EXO’s. It talks about the Tree of Life, the Red Force, and the Twelve becoming One. MAMA is the Theory, in the TL;DR version.
2. Wolf --> Growl --> (Teaser #17 Kris)
These are in sequential order. So what we see is the Twelve sent to earth to reunite. At this point they don’t realize their power (powers were probably sealed since they were students or something) hence why they’re acting like they don’t have powers. They all get into a fight and Luhan leaves. However, with Luhan’s power awakening the members slowly find out about their powers. This is also notable that Teaser #17, shows Kris confident, probably went on a spiritual journey after leaving his friend and having a #foundhimself moment. However, we all know that all the boys are connected, so now that Luhan’s power is awakened, everyone else’s in EXO is awakened, hence Kris’s power.
3. KokoBop
With their new found powers (still under severe memory loss), they slowly figure out their powers. Since they’re still young, they use it for trivial things such as moving back and forth (Kai with the car), Chanyeol starting fireworks, etc. This point in time, they feel their powers are amplified by narcotics, therefore there’s the dream-like, trippy vibe throughout the video.
4. Lotto
Lotto is a reference to how they get power hungry with discovering these new powers. Through this they slowly lose their friend (the girl from Wolf/Growl). The girl is seen more as a toy as they get involved in more dangerous situations with their new founded powers. EXO thinks that they’re untouchable with their “new” found powers, hence the money, and seemingly rich state. However, like in a lottery, or with gambling, if you gamble too much, you’ll lose everything in the end.
5. Miracles in December
The girl leaves after realizing her power-hungry friends were not going to ever go back to how they used to be, hence she leaves. MiD they show how EXO wants to bring her back, but not fully understanding on why she left hence why they have a line referencing their powers, ”I stop time (Oh! now I will)”,
6. Sing For You
This entire song is flashback of showing us a glimpse of what happened after the girl left the boys. The fighting, and the disconnect between all of them of how the powers should be used, therefore all of them went their separate ways. This flashback is shown during the time when the next part basically happens all around the same time.
7.  EXO Teaser #1 Kai / EXO Teaser #20 Chanyeol
The teaser that started it all, because yes, it starts the real time of events that bring us up to the plot line. Kai with his full on power realizes that something is going down. Hence he looks at the pocket watch after stepping out of the car, almost like he’s about find someone.
Kai goes to find Chanyeol and hands him a pocket watch and probably on an important task.
In EXO Teaser #20 Chanyeol (BGM El Dorado), we see Chanyeol on a quest. Chanyeol knows Kai sent him with an important task. Chanyeol is the researcher to finding out why they have powers and is searching everywhere on why they’re on earth with their super powers, and activates it again, when he touches the rock.
8. Pathcode Tao / Pathcode Chanyeol / Pathcode Kai / Pathcode Xiumin/ EXO Teaser #11 Kai and Xiumin
This sequence happens probably a couple days later to a week later.
Pathcode Kai, Tao, Chanyeol, Xiumin happen within mere minutes of each other, while Teaser #11 happens a couple of moments later.
Pathcode Kai we see him nervous about somebody watching him, as if someone is tailing him, and knows about his super powers. Kai tries his best to run away, however this person is following him. When Kai is running away from these people, he realizes they know about his power, hence why he willingly uses it in public to find someone close. This disconnect is to show the future that will happen to EXO. Remember, Kai is the beginning (and the end of everything), thus this is foreshadowing the future.
Pathcode Tao, we see him chilling in a cafe he’s reading the newspaper and notices weird things and stories about him and the rest of EXO should only know about. Tao is someone who has re-assimilate back into society hence, his lack of control over his powers is non-existent, therefore the cause of the outburst of stopping of time everywhere.
Pathcode Chanyeol and Xiumin happen actually within minutes of each other but I’ll explain Chanyeol first.
Pathcode Chanyeol we find him in an empty patch of grass in the middle of nowhere, almost in an abandoned area, nearby where he found the artifacts for EXO (teaser #20). He notices something is wrong when he looks at the pocket watch and time has stopped, realizing that Tao has probably has something to do with it. The reason why Chanyeol was sent to find the artifacts is because he’s probably the strongest out of all the members. I think there’s a limit on Kai’s teleportation, but Chanyeol has a better control over his powers. Chanyeol is then encountered by the Red Force, and the fight breaks with him willingly fighting and almost determined to win.
Pathcode Xiumin happens while Kai is running away from the stalkers in Pathcode: Kai. Xiumin is seen living a rather normal life, going skateboarding and being a normal young adult. However, when he bumps into the mysterious man in the stairwell, that’s when the Red Force realize they found another member of EXO. Hence, when he goes to his room to watch TV, they hack into his TV to display weird messages, dictating his past towards when he was younger (the images of wolf). Xiumin freaks and leaves the apartment.
This is when Teaser #11 Xiumin and Kai come in to play. In this teaser we find Kai has reunited with Xiumin (as he’s one of the nearest people towards him). Kai and Xiumin are on the run away from the Red Force, however the Red Force corners them.
9. Teaser #9 Sehun and Luhan Teaser / Pathcode Sehun / Pathcode Chen
These also rather happen with the same time frame. Teaser #9 with Sehun and Luhan shows that they are probably together somehow, living nearby. (Luhan left so if he was going to be in Pathcodes, his would have been close to Sehun’s house). In Pathcode: Sehun, we see him enter into a house with abnormal things going on, before he quickly leaves with his strong gusts of wind to find someone, and to run away. The reason why he leaves the house so fast is because the children are not real, and projections created by the Red Force, hence why he’s out of there in the speed of light.
Pathcode: Chen happens around the same time, where Sehun’s power are going out of his control (like we saw in Tao’s teaser from the lack of using one’s power). However, we know Sehun’s power is out of control due to Chen’s teaser showing the strong gusts of wind.
10. Pathcode Lay / Pathcode Baekhyun
These we know happen the same time due to the message sent from Lay to Baekhyun. After all the members parted ways, Baekhyun and Luhan are the only ones to stay connected, hence why Lay messages Baekhyun (or that’s the only part we see, Lay could’ve messaged the other members).
In Lay’s Pathcode, we see him enter a restaurant but freak out when he sees the flowers growing. Lay knows that these flowers are associated with the Red Force, so knowing they are onto EXO, he sends his message out to the first person he can, which is Baekhyun before leaving the restaurant.
Pathcode: Baekhyun, we see Baekhyun notice something fishy about the neighborhood he’s walking in. When the lights flicker and then goes to check hiss message from Lay, realizes the Red Force is following him. Running through the streets, the Red Force is powerful and knows if they blackout the city, Baekhyun will be forced to use his powers. Hence at the end, Baekhyun looks like he got caught once he activates the lights around him. Baekhyun is backed up a fence and is surrounded by the Red Force.
11. Overdose
And now we are back on our journey though our favorite place, the maze. The red force has captured all of EXO. The order the members appear in the beginning is the opposite of how they were captured.
First was Suho, and then Xiumin (Xiumin sacrificed himself in order for Kai to get out safely), Baekhyun (cornered by the Red Force), Chanyeol (lost his fight against the Red Force in the forest), Kris (this is not explained because he has no pathcode. Key notes #1 will be below to show what I think his pathcode would’ve turned out to be), Chen (this boy was straight up chillin so Red Force Ambushed him on the rooftop, Lay (found due to the fact his powers are not strong enough to fight against the red force when he’s captured. sadly this boy can’t heal his way out of trouble), D.O, Sehun (trying to find Luhan ends up caught by the Red Force in his house), Tao (Tao can only stop time for a short period of time when his powers are in control, so his running away is the most plausible of how fast he can stay away from the Red Force), Luhan (with his telekinesis power he can run away (Luhan does not have a pathcode however, Key notes #2 will be below to show what I think his pathcode would’ve ended up as),
and Kai is last.
Remember, Kai is the beginning and the end of whatever happens in EXO.
The other key notes is D.O & Suho. Remember these two are the key members to stop the red force.
In the opening sequence we see D.O open a black box. This box represents Pandora’s box.
Pandora’s Box by definition is the box that contains all chaos, and when opened, it’s the start of the chaos that engulfs EXO.
D.O, has no choice in opening the box, as he think it represents a clue, but unfortunately that’s not the case. That’s why he ends up dropping the box in the end (kyungsoo is #sorrynotsorry)
Suho on the other hand, is the one that’s been in the maze the longest (or the SM dungeon). Because of him being in the maze the longest, he thought he found the way out, but unfortunately it’s another dead end. In the midst of his frustration, he bangs on the barrier because he knows his destination is on the other side of the barrier.
12. Call Me Baby
This the first set of hallucinations set in by the Red Force. Call Me Baby is the most realistic out of all the hallucinations and test that the Red Force puts EXO through, therefore it seems more believable. Kai is the first to enter through the set of hallucinations, and majority are probably his hallucinations. This is EXO believing that everything is fine and they’re just normal guys working at a car shop, but unfortunately that’s nto the case.
13. Power
Power is the 2nd set of hallucinations. As kids we all imagine ourselves as superheroes, and EXO is no different. Power is about them defeating the Red Force in an almost childlike fashion, hence the bright lights and the rather playful like atmosphere.
But in reality, these are tests done by the Red Force. It’s the red force gaging how each member would do in a battle against them, and how if the Red Force were to gain their power, how would the counter. In the beginning of the MV, while it’s going through the different worlds, it pauses at LMR, and then heads straight into the MV, hence why this is before LMR.
Power and the background colors used are also almost the same type of colors used for lighting in LMR, because they’re still trapped in the hallucination.
13. Love Me Right
LMR, the 3rd Hallucination stage. At this point EXO can see the split in their hallucination and what’s real, hence all the split imaging going on in LMR. There’s a lot of self-fighting throughout the MV, and that’s them fighting against their hallucinations.
14. Lucky One Part 1 & 2
Now we finally see EXO in a non hallucinated state. The office and center of Lucky One I believe is at the bottom of the Overdose maze underground. However, my theory is a bit different from most, because I believe Lucky One should be split into three parts.
Part one takes place from 0:00 - 1:32. This is where we see EXO in the white suits, being tested on by the RF. 1:32 - 2:05 which Lay’s dream/hallucination. 2:05 - the end of the MV is part 3 where we see them breaking out.
There are many key things to note from Lucky One. FIrst of all, this definitely shows how the RF has been doing tests on them, putting them under heavy sedation, causing hallucinations. In the beginning we see D.O looking to the left. When you look to the left, it means you are telling the truth, so he’s recalling the past of when he tried to fight against the red force but it did not successfully work out.
At 0:24, the RF injects a blue liquid in Baekhyun causing him to wake up and being in a state of a shock. I believe this this the explanation we saw in Power. Because Baekhyun was the one to figure out how to defeat the RF, they were not happy, thus waking up and putting in a state of shock. Baekhyun at the end of power is floating in blue water (like actually really blue), but it’s extremely shallow. Baekhyun goes through a hypnic jerk” which is a sudden movement by the body, or it can be caused by a when a person is startled, causing a state of falling (something like the ‘kick’ used in the 2010 movie Inception). Hence why Baekhyun just falls out of the sky into the pool of water, but not drowning. He’s being woken up by the RF, forcefully.
However in a small dose it can also causes small wake-ups in between heavy sedation (like in LMR, the crack between reality and what’s a hallucination.)
0:53 we see Suho trapped in a black and white box. This where he’s kept normally when not being tested on. I will explain in Tempo further.
1:32 we see Lay being taken away to get heavily sedated to cause hallucinations. However, we must remember, Lay’s power are Healing, so heavy sedation does not work on him that heavily. However, with their strength, he’s still slightly sedated but can still piece together how to stop the RF.
The black-and-white scenes that follow show the steps needed to defeat the red force.
Moon
The planet represents the EXO planet that they’re from.
Fire
Chanyeol is essential to the breakout of EXO
Asteroids / Meteor Shower
This represents the vast amount of trouble that EXO will face in the near future
Eclipse
This represents the fact that there will be another eclipse happening (yes it’s been that long since the first one seen in teaser that started it all and EXO has been on the fight with RF for that long)
The cubes
This will be further explained in Tempo
Kai Dancing
Baekhyun’s Light
And that’s the end of Part 1 & 2 of Lucky One & the story line leading up to Tempo. Next post will be of the E N T I R E theory on Tempo
*Key notes*
Truthfully, I think if Luhan and Kris were a part of the CMB promotions and Pathcodes, Luhan’s would’ve been somewhere close to Sehun’s, Kris would’ve been close to Tao. (no it’s not because of shipping but how these teaser played out). Tao would’ve ran off, and I imagine he would’ve bumped into Kris in his #newyearnewme state, but seeing Tao in a state of panic, he realizes he’s not free.

This poster feels like a bit of a lie because while, yes, the movie does technically star Rajkummar Rao and Sanya Malhotra, it only 'stars' Sanya in the sense that she is, in fact, in the movie.
Aside from showing up in the same flashback scenes multiple times, she might actually only have the 5th or 6th most screen time (if that). Which is sorta disappointing. But then, call a movie "The First Case" seems to imply that there will be a second case (as does the ending of the movie announcing such a fact), so hopefully they can right this wrong by giving her a more substantial role.
Speaking of substantial roles, Rajkummar once again absolutely nails it. He's amazingly talented and such a joy to watch, even at times that the movie seems to flounder a bit.
It's trying too hard to explain his PTSD symptoms - which is fine, mind you, but the whole thing is never really fully explained. Like, it seems like there was something personal going on there but all we ever see is the horrific torturous scene - occasionally literally through his eyes.
The whole final twist works, though the reasoning used in this movie seems subpar to what was used in the original Telugu movie (seems to be a trend; the same was true for Forensic) - I get wanting to change things up a bit (though, Bollywood has never cared about that before...), but they picked a pretty weird way to include such an arc. Using it just as a reason for someone to commit a murder seems a bit ... awful. But then, Bollywood might just be over the whole "hole in the heart" thing - I feel like that's been used many, many times over the years.
Milind Gunaji has been portraying mostly negative roles for so long, it was cool to see him be not-negative for once. Of course, that ended about as well for his character as most of his villanous roles, so I'm guessing he may not fully understand the joys of being good.
Good suspense story - sorta hard to completely figure out (especially the why, even if you start sniffing correctly on the who). Even the who is a bit of a guess because there multiple people involved - for a second there, I thought maybe Sanya's character might be involved, only because I wanted her to get some more screen-time. But then, that - after the initial 'wow, WTF?!' moment, would probably have been a bit disappointing - partially because it would be too obvious (unless she had been the blurry truck driver, maybe?!) and partially because, again, that feels exactly like something Bollywood has been doing on overkill recently (the whole *twisty* big-name actor/actress is the culprit thing). But as they start running out of characters, you start wondering about the characters who remain.
Speaking of which - and I know this has also been done (Vodka Diaries) - but another interesting twist that I thought might've been fun is if this turned out to be something 'Shutter Island'-ish. That could've been interesting too, especially with his PTSD from what he'd experienced before. Like, what if he was temporally dissociated from himself and trying to solve that case as a third party detective? That'd be pretty cool and trippy, if done right.
While I hate that they sidelined Sanya Malhotra so much, I do actually like the final twist they pulled on us. I've been thinking up a story - well, many many stories, but one specifically relevant to this twist - that would have something similar, for the simple reason that ... well, I mean, there's no one better to make the culprit.
I'm ready for their second case already.

TV’s Most Confusing Episodes From Doctor Who to Westworld
https://ift.tt/2WAmL4r
There has to be some confusion in a TV drama, a procession of things not-yet-understood. That’s the deal: accept temporary bafflement in the expectation that at some point, all will be revealed. Or even if it won’t be, at least there’s a reason it’s been left unsolved, like a Sudoku you’ve got jam on.

TV’s Most Stressful Episodes From Battlestar Galactica to The Handmaid’s Tale
By Alec Bojalad and 2 others
What doesn’t work is when a TV show that’s supposed to be taking you along with it, leaves you behind. That could be your fault (Did you stay awake? Skip an episode? Were you checking your phone? Was your dog doing that weird thing with the curtains so you had to get up and miss a bit?). Or it could be the fault of a TV show either too ambitious or inaccessible or illogical for comfort. We’ve chosen the episodes that left us scratching our heads; you can judge who’s to blame.
Doctor Who ‘Twice Upon a Time’ (2017)
So named because twice is the minimum number of times you have to watch the 2017 Doctor Who Christmas special before you have the weakest grasp of what’s going on. Considering that most will have only watched it once, and that, from inside a boozy, gravy-based fug, it’s staggering how esoteric this one is – impressively so. As showrunner Steven Moffat’s farewell episode, it’s a distillation of the sort of clever, complicated, ambitious, self-referential writing he’s known for.
There are two Doctors (three if you count the post-Regeneration glimpse of Thirteen), two overlapping Doctor Who stories, a Dalek, an ancestor of The Brigadier, a ship’s pilot made of glass, a moving historical WWI moment and three companions who aren’t really there. (Or are they?) It’s about regret, or reminiscence, or saying goodbye. It’s definitely about something and is doubtless very meaningful and poignant once you crack its shell, but there’s the sense that, unless you’re one of the Who hardcore, it doesn’t really care for you to try. Why be so aloof? It’s Christmas. Let the rest of us play too. LM
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 4 Episode 8 ‘I’m Not the Person I Used to Be’
This was a bold move from a bold show. When Santino Fontana chose to leave Crazy Ex-Girlfriend after his one year contract ended, the character of Greg – assumed by many to be lead Rebecca’s romantic endgame – was written out in early season two. Then in the fourth and final season, Greg returned but this time played by Skylar Astin. Instead of glossing over the casting change and pretending as though nothing had happened (like when, say, Ross’ ex-wife Carol on Friends or mercenary warrior Daario Naharis on Game of Thrones changed faces), Crazy Ex-Girlfriend hit it straight on.
This smart, innovative series had always been filtered through the unreliable perspective of lead Rebecca Bunch (hence the extravagant musical numbers that take place in her head). So when Greg’s character was recast, the show used it to comment on our impressions of other people. ‘I’m Not the Person I Used to Be’ lampshaded New Greg with a psychoanalytical reflection on changing perceptions and personal growth. It was brave. It was innovative. It was admirable. It was… really confusing and distancing. However great Astin was in the role, and however clever the idea was, New Greg was the point at which some Crazy Ex-Girlfriend fans began to peel away from a show clearly unafraid to leave viewers behind. LM
Westworld Season 3 Episode 8 ‘Crisis Theory’
The Westworld season one finale was confusing in a delicious, grinning ‘Oh, you clever devil’ kind of way. The Westworld season two finale was confusing in an exhilarating ‘Blimey. All right then!’ kind of way. The Westworld season three finale was confusing in a way that made you feel like you’d watched the entire Terminator trilogy on fast-forward while downing a 12-pack of Red Bull and trying to rewire the electrics in your house. It wasn’t a good feeling.
I still don’t know which world-dominating AI was which, who was fighting who, what the evil French guy wanted, how many people were secretly Dolores, whether Maeve still only existed in the Matrix, and why Jesse from Breaking Bad was the new Jesus. If free will still exists by the time season four comes, I’m using mine to either get a valium prescription or change channels. LM
Rick and Morty Season 4 Episode 6 ‘Never Ricking Morty’
“Never Ricking Morty” is a particularly divisive episode of Rick and Morty – even at this very website! Some of us loved it, while others weren’t big fans. One thing that’s undeniable, however, is that this midseason 4 episode is the show’s most complicated narrative endeavor yet. “Never Ricking Morty” takes place on a “Story Train,” meaning that the plot initially goes through your typical three-act storytelling structure.
Once Rick and Morty realize where they are, however, Rick understands that the only way out of the Story Train is to reject the conventions of storytelling altogether. This means that any natural storytelling inclination must be resisted. It also means that the show burns through about nine series finales worth of epic nonsense right at the end as Rick and Morty’s “canon” is sucked right out of them. It’s tremendously challenging to watch, much less understand, and the episode wants it that way. – AB
Russian Doll Episode 7 ‘The Way Out’
Like many other Groundhog Day-style “time loop” stories, Netflix’s Russian Doll goes out of its way to establish the “rules” of its sci-fi premise. Every time Nadia Vulvokov (Natasha Lyonne) dies (which happens with disturbing frequency), she returns to the night of her 36th birthday party, washing her face in the bathroom as Harry Nilsson’s “Gotta Get Up” plays. That much is easy to understand, and Russian Doll has fun seeing how far it can make Nadia last before perishing and returning to the night in question.
Once she meets another person stuck in a time loop, however, things start to get wacky. Russian Doll’s seventh episode, “The Way Out,” is about as off-the-wall an experience as you’ll find on television. Nadia’s loved ones start to disappear. Then she flashes back to memories of her mother. Before you know it, teeth are bloodily falling out. Russian Doll settles in for a relatively logical ending in its eighth episode, but this penultimate installment is pleasantly incomprehensible. – AB
The Nevers Episode 6 ‘True’
The Nevers’ premise is bold enough to begin with. The HBO series is set in a fictional Victorian era where a select portion of the population (most of them women) have been “Touched” or blessed with supernatural abilities. Apparently, however, bold wasn’t nearly bold enough. The Nevers’ sixth episode, which serves as a de facto season finale due to a COVID production delay, upends everything.

The Nevers Part 1 Finale Is The Most Surprising Hour of TV in a Long Time
By Alec Bojalad
This episode begins not in 19th century London like every other installment thus far, but in a far flung dystopian sci-fi future. Earth is barely habitable and humanity is on the ropes. The only possible hope that the human race has left is in the form of a powerful alien species known as the Galanthi. If this all sounds complicated, you don’t even know the half of it. “True” is notable for not holding the audience’s hand through this disorienting experience at all. The episode makes no attempt to tone down its futuristic jargon and it’s not entirely clear what’s even happening until halfway through. By episode’s end, it’s apparent how “True” connects to The Nevers’ original concept, but no one would be blamed for needing multiple rewatches to really get it. – AB
Farscape Season 4 Episode 7 ‘John Quixote’
Let it never be said that Farscape was a TV show afraid to take a big creative swing. In season 4, we get this trippy and confusing episode (written by series star Ben Browder), which sees Crichton and Chiana trapped in a virtual reality game based on the memories of Black-T Crichton (because, yes, this was after the storyline that saw the show’s main character split into two, equally valid humans) and a neural template from Stark. The game is designed to keep C & C trapped in the gameworld until they die so their consciousnesses will be trapped in the virtual reality—wait for it—forever.
This hour of TV actually holds up quite well upon rewatch, probably because it is packed to the brim with clever pop culture references, but an initial watch of this series installment is absolutely bonkers, featuring Aeryn as a southern belle, Rygel as a version of Monty Python’s Black Knight who can shoot fire out of his ass, and D’Argo as a lederhosen-wearing Hansel who, at one point, eats baked beans out of Jool’s intestines. I can only imagine what someone watching this episode out of context would imagine this show is actually about. – KB
Fringe Season 2 Episode 11 ‘Unearthed’
Some episodes of television intentionally challenge the viewer’s ability to interpret what the hell is going on, and some episodes of television are broadcast wildly out of order, seemingly bringing back a character killed off in the previous season for a humdrum monster-of-the-week installment. You may have guessed that I have a specific example in mind for that second category and, if so, you would be right. Written and filmed to be the 21st episode of Fringe’s first season, “Unearthed” was instead recycled to be a mid-season installment in the second season of Fox’s usually pretty great sci-fi drama.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
This might have worked—it’s a basic episode that sees the Fringe team exploring the mystery of a teen girl who is pronounced dead, only to wake up screaming an alphanumeric code while doctors are working to remove her organs—save for the fact that it features a Fringe team member who was killed at the end of the previous season. Honestly, I can laugh about this now, but, at the time, it was jarring and confusing, with the network (Fox, if you were wondering) offering no pre-episode or in-episode explanation offered for why the aforementioned deceased character might be up and walking. For this to happen in an episode that also features a guest character thought dead revealed to be alive is icing on the cake. – KB
The OA Episode 8 ‘Invisible Self’
The OA is one of the most aggressively bizarre shows in Netflix history. Created by and starring Brit Marling, this two-season sci-fi series is fit to bursting with strange, at times difficult-to-comprehend concepts. The storyfollows Marling as Prairie Johnson, a young woman who resurfaces after disappearing – only now she refers to herself as “The OA (or original angel)”. Prairie/The OA recruits several disciples who she promises to take to another dimension. In “Invisible Self”, the final episode of the show’s first season, it all somehow culminates into…well, into this:
Yes, what you’re seeing there is a group full of cult weirdos engaging in an interpretive dance to stop a school shooter. And mostly succeeding! The OA‘s second season gets even stranger in many respects but it’s hard to top the confusing majesty of this first season finale.
Twin Peaks: The Return ‘Part 8’
Legendary filmmaker David Lynch has absolutely no concerns about being dubbed “confusing.” In fact, when it comes to Lynch’s filmography, that’s kind of a feature, not a bug. In-between crafting mind-bending classic films like The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, and Mulholland Drive, however, Lynch took some time to stamp his name into TV history with the surprisingly straight-forward Twin Peaks. Sure, Twin Peaks was frequently abstract and strange throughout its two-season run but it had a coherent plot, which is more than many Lynch movies can claim.
That sense of narrative coherence all ends during a particular episode of the 2017 revival Twin Peaks: The Return. “Part 8” is absolutely bonkers. Episode co-writer Mark Frost described it as “what you might describe as a Twin Peaks origin story, [showing] where this pervasive sense of darkness and evil had come from.” In Frost and Lynch’s world, that sense of darkness comes in forms including but not limited to: the detonation of the first atomic bomb in 1945, oodles of primordial ectoplasmic fluid, a frog/cockroach creature, woodsmen manifesting out of mid-air, and of course: a performance by “The” Nine Inch Nails. It’s one of the most confusing episodes of television in history…and one of the best.
Dark – Every. Single. Episode.
When trying to pinpoint one episode to highlight for this article, Dark fought back and I came to the conclusion that every single episode of German multigenerational sci-fi series Dark is borderline impenetrable. Just when you think you have finally wrapped your head around what’s happening in the small town of Winden, Dark will throw in another layer to this timey-wimey, multiversal story that assures that you, in fact, have no idea what the hell is going on.
That being said, unlike some of the shows on this list, the confusing nature of Dark’s narrative isn’t a bug; it’s an intentional feature. This is a show that asks a lot from its viewers, but gives us satisfying answers in return. And it’s OK if you only ever have half an idea of what’s going on—if that’s the case, you’re doing better than most of Dark’s characters. – KB

a callout for max/jasper/fuyuhikolovemail
i didn’t say yes, i didn’t say i’ll think about it. i guess this was a long time in waiting. i CAN confirm that i’m the original owner of this blog (s**********[email protected]) and this was the last url i used, and the last name i went by was jelli. the other thing i can confirm is that i used to date max (@/fuyuhikolovemail) until october 2017 when we abruptly broke up. it was for the better. however, in my humbling opinion, max is a danger to the people around him, and based on how he both was sexually and mentally abusive to me, i think it’s my job as a citizen to tell other people about what he’s done.
warning ahead for mentions of c(oc)sa, abuse, rape, incest, lots of that nasty stuff.
let’s start at the very beginning of the end. this is all going under a readmore because i don’t want to clog up somebody’s poor dashboard.
Tumblr media
the end begins with a vague conversation in this huge groupchat about me. before this i had done some bad things but i asked for help to better myself (which nobody tried). i wish i could post everything and give every detail from this chat, but this post would be a mile long if i tried that, and i’m trying to keep this short and digestible. anyways, max was always regarded as a saint, and due to my speaking out about feeling hurt, i was kicked from the server, blocked by everybody on all platforms, and never spoken of again. you might think, well, WERE you bad, jelli? i’ll always say i did something wrong, but i will never say that i did them out of malice.
Tumblr media
here’s an example of one of max’s vagues that he would consistently post on vent whenever he was upset. instead of confronting me or anybody he had problems with, he would vague about it and act all upset when nobody did anything.
now let’s try to put a bit more context in this.
way back in the beginning of our relationship, max and i were with a guy called leon (do you remember his callout?), and to keep this part extremely short, i was one of the people in the screenshots, i was one of the people who was in contact with leon daily. i was exposed to everything that’s mentioned in his callout, and by extension, everything from max’s quote “system” as well. max’s system is extremely questionable in nature, because from everything i know, his system was “faked” for a long time until he discovered his “real system”. he even lied about the identity of somebody in his system, pretending she was a real person and not a part of his “system”. at the age of 14, i was exposed to every conversation about incest, rape, pedophilia, and every single gorey disgusting detail of all of that.
and did max ever apologize for putting me through that? no. i was traumatized at his and leon’s hands.
Tumblr media
and in fact this WAS an abusive relationship. i was constantly convinced that when it was “bad” i could somehow make it “better” when in reality i couldn’t (red is me, purple is a close friend of mine).
Tumblr media
here’s one of max’s “alters”, dirk, demonizing me to one of my friends. there’s a lot of other oddball information in here not needed. what i was having was not a “guilt trippy meltdown”, i was extremely anxious because another “alter” accused me of lying and promptly told me to fuck off (seafoam is another friend).
okay, here’s the other part: max often talked to me about sexual situations and i would not consent. i didn’t say yes or sure, i just went along with it.
Tumblr media
that can’t possibly be right. he would bring up something sexual and i would feel obliged to participate. he would ask me sexually powered questions, he would ask me when i was touching myself, all kinds of extremely personal things like that. there were only about one or two times i said no - he would stop, but the fact there were so many other times where he would just continue even if i expressed feeling uncomfortable, it’s just wrong.
i think the next point to add was that people younger than i, around 13 and 14, were also involved in these incidents, and often did max’s bidding for him.
and i guess the final point is that overall, max is an easily angered, intolerable, cruel and rude person. he’s difficult to work with in relationships. he doesn’t treat people right.
anyways, on that ending note, here’s assorted screenshots to drive my point home. a lot of these are more recent than others. not censoring out any names in these, just so you know they were directed at me and they did involve me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
max and his alter “dirk” calling people r*tards.
Tumblr media
“dirk” telling me to snort piss (this one’s fucking hilarious but honestly, why? this is so weird).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i really don’t want to have to go into detail about this one, but in this one max is blaming me for his issues, saying i “insulted his special interest” and other various pokes at my psyche, and ends it off with a sweet “i hope you’re sleeping well” - that was his way of roping me in and keeping me tied up. i thought, well, if he could end it on a sweet note, maybe he wasn’t so bad. he was.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
max getting one of his friends, pictured, to do his bidding, in this case berate me for “becoming a monster” apparently.
i’m sorry for not including more stuff but i honestly didn’t have the guts nor did i have the energy to go digging for more awful crap. you’ll just have to try and accept the first hand accounts that i have.
i’m just begging you to stay away from max so you don’t have to stick in a toxic relationship like i had to. he manipulates and twists your words into things that aren’t really true, and when you finally say “this doesn’t feel right”, he gets rid of you. i hope that if you’re with him right now you get to get away. thanks and goodnight

Me Watching Fate/Apocrypha ep 22
Remember that Naruto vs Pain best worst fight scene? Where everybody’s making crazy ass face and noodle-y stances? This is not on that scale, but it’s still this.
*Agrius!Atalanta bites Jeanne* Jeanne: “BAD KITTY! BAD KITTY!!”
Karna you’re too polite for your own good
WASN’T EXPECTING CAULES POPPING OUT HERE AND NOW BUT OKAY VERY WELCOME
But how does he come in here again? Did he just step down from his plane? Is that even possible?
Sieg: “Wait, you want to save your original master?” Caules: “Yeah they don’t have command spells anymore what’s the point?” Karna: “Because I want to. Is that weird?” Both: “Well, it’s saintly as fuck, for one thing.”
Seeing Caules negotiating is always intriguing thing for me.
CAULES TO THE RESCUE! And his unfastened collar :))
I have a question what is the exact mechanism of saving these former red masters??
Sieg: “If attacking Jeanne is your master’s order then why go after me instead?” Karna: “I have this promise with Siegfried to fight to the death and I will give up everything to do that.” Sieg: “Ooooooookay I don’t know whether to be awed or scared.”
I like the music it’s so full of pride.
And here we have another type-moon male protagonist swearing to protect the female protagonist who is stronger than him
Granted at this point Sieg is just loaded with tons of eleventh hour superpower and probably kinda more powerful than many other servants but the point kinda still stands?
Back at episode 22 of My Cat from Hell
It’s been almost 3 years and I still don’t understand why Agrius Metamorphosis has to morph into that kind of suit? Isn’t this like the prototype of Dangerous Beast?
Agrius!Atalanta evolution! Sexy-boar-beast-with-batsy-wings-and-dark-arrow-Agrius Atalanta.
Welp, people has always been like that – people. Past present and future, the nature of people hasn’t changed that much.
Jeanne: “The end never justifies the means!!!” Agrius!Atalanta: “Fuck that!!!”
Wow I like how this fight isn’t too dark and I can see what they’re doing and the viewpoint is good.
WOW she rips off her own wing o_o
I’m bracing for another luminosite eternelle but GREEN LIGHT SOARING THROUGH YESSS
IT’S MOTHERFUCKING ACHILLES HERE YOU ARE FINALLY
Achilles: “Go, Jeanne. It’s sis’ and my problem now.” Jeanne: “I fucking knew it something’s up with you two.”
I’m kinda bummed A-1 doesn’t make it explicit that Achilles really does regret not picking up the clues and just letting Atalanta goes out of control.
His face looks like a boy shyly apologizing for breaking a neighbor’s window.
Why is Semiramis so beautiful and dignified here??
Jeanne: “You seriously believe in Shirou’s humanity salvation plan?” Semiramis: “Yeah, he even told me I’d rule the world after the salvation” Jeanne: “You fucking liar. Nobody’s ruling nobody if it’s truly salvation and you just sound like a certain golden Babylonian asshole king.”
Jeanne: “So how does he plan to do it?” Semiramis: “Well, tbh, I dunno.” Jeanne: “Are you fucking kidding me”
Wow this is so vivid. Does A-1 use color play to balance the noodle figures?
How to fight nukes by Sieg!Fried: Slash the nukes apart.
I.. I do not have any words for this fight, it’s vivid and flashy and powerful.
Though I’m wondering will Mamaramis be mad that their children are destroying her fortress with nukes and lavas?
I like Karna’s armors
TASTE THE EYEBEAMS! -Karna
The eyebeams cuts Sieg!Fried’s beautiful wild long hair THAT’S CLOSE AND ALSO A CRIME
Karna can you stop praising your enemies every time you fight? My heart is going to explode
Oh shit oh shit he’s going to VASAVI SHAKTI
Karna: “What’s your name?” Sieg!Fried: “Sieg!” Karna: “Wonderful name” Me: It’s a bit uncreative but it’s made up of honor and gratitude and now that you’re saying it’s wonderful then wonderful it is.
I LOST MY SHIT WHEN I WATCHED KARNA GOING DIVA IT WAS MIDNIGHT
The look of approval between Sieg!Fried and Karna is a blessing in itself
Move, Clarent Blood Arthur vs Balmung, it’s time for the new best clash: Vasavi Shakti vs Balmung
It’s the third time he uses the command spell right? Cause I can hear Jeanne’s Sieg sense tingling with exasperation.
Sieg!Fried: “Even this is not enough-“ Astolfo: “A SHIELD DELIVERY EXPRESS COMING THROUGHHHHHHH!!!!”
Astolfo: “Are you seriously giving me your shield noble phantasm?? You’re crazy.” Achilles: “I don’t need it anymore and beside it’s my promise to sensei.” Astolfo: “Oh okay. You’re still crazy tho.”
Sometimes I wonder if at this point Achilles is ready to give everything even his life to stop Atalanta because that damn shield is too strong to be given away just like that.
Manly screaming Astolfo is something I never thought I’d need in my life
Ain’t no shield like using a world containing your life as one.
Astolfo: “Wow I didn’t expect using a shield would cause an entire trippy journey into Achilles’s entire life, isn’t this breach of privacy?” Achilles somewhere: “It’s called Achilles Cosmos what exactly did you expect from it?”
Wow wowowo the sudden creation Greek architecture buildings is just… wow. Even Karna is amazed.
The scene when Sieg!Fried and Karna race to grab Balmung is an extreme version of when two people race to grab the last pizza.
When in fight, do NOT only bring one sword! -Sieg!Fried
If this entire fight was not Sieg!Fried vs Karna but only Sieg using Siegfried’s power vs Karna, would there still be anyone who would watch this?
Karna: “Sorry for dragging you with my ego” Sieg: “No, sorry I win through Astolfo’s sudden help” Karna: “No, Astolfo’s your servant and your power. It’s still a fair fight.” Sieg: “Holy crap you are like the greatest person in this world”
I wanna bet at some point Sieg’s like ‘Why do all these heroes have enough time to talk about lots of things when they’re one and half foot into the grave?’
Karna: “Jeanne will be in danger if she finds Shakespeare.” Sieg: “Alright thanks for the info gotta go bye!” Karna: “That was fast.“
Remember when honor and chivalry in war is no good as it will only meet betrayal? No, Fate/Apocrypha isn’t about that.
Karna would die alone if he was a dick but no he wasn’t a dick and Astolfo gets that so he was willing to chat and honor him before Karna fades away.
Karna: “I believe I hardly did anything worthy of a Servant” Me: HOLY SHIT KARNA STAHP YOUR HUMILITY IS KILLING MEE
Goodbye, my kind, hero of charity.
AND HERE I THOUGHT I’D EAT MY SHOE BECAUSE THEY’D SHIFT ACHILLES VS ATALANTA TO THE NEXT EP BUT NOPE THANK GOD
Yes people, the ultimate reason why I keep up with Apocrypha is because I want to see Achilles vs Atalanta and the known result of it
I found almost nothing until today about the fight beside that one line in beastlair forum and an online translated side material and I live with only those for years SO YEAH JUDGE ME I DON’T CARE
Wow the music is so catchy
You know A-1, you can use those 3 seconds for other more important actions on scene instead of Atalanta’s panties.
On a different note, here we are seeing a rider who fights more like a lancer versus an archer who fights more like a berserker
Ow he stabs her. It hurts :(
OW her arrows come back and stabs him. It hurts too :((
Aw yis he’s cradling her, I imagined this for like 3 years and it actually is like this.
NO NONONONO NOT THIS SAD SOUNDTRACK
I’d pay for Atalanta and Achilles to have another 3 seconds to talk more.
Why is Atalanta the one crying? Pretty sure in the novel it’s Achilles who’s crying. It’s even explicitly states in the side material that it’s his very tears and heroic naivety that makes Atalanta feel a bit better in the end.
The English sub makes it sounds like she was fine falling into corruption whereas I’m kinda sure (even tho my Japanese skill is zero) she’d mean she was fine with him stopping her. Correct me if I’m wrong tho.
It kinda hurts that she disappears before he does like I imagined that they’d disappear together, I know there is the battle continuation excuse but.. He has to watch her die and isn’t that painful?
Not gonna lie. Regardless of how short their exchange is and the inaccuracy of who’s crying, I’m loving the detail of this scene. Like how he barely yet still holds her in his arms, how the blood drips on her, how he sighs a little and embraces her as soon as she wakes up as herself, how his head slightly moves as she leans closer, how she weakly caresses his cheek, leaving bloodstains, and he just closes his eyes, and how she finally disappears then he follows- Oh my it looks like I just wrote an entire fanfiction
Isn’t it funny that I ship them for fun since he hits on her which is from vol 1 and then somehow it ends up in tragedy?
Tfw you care too much of a side couple (that isn’t really a couple) way more than the actual main couple
And now all of you understand why those two are on the credit together and why it gives me feels right of the bat
Maybe Achilles’s last words were the ones he wanted to, or should have, say back at episode 19, before Atalanta fell into madness. If he did, would this not happen?
Oh shit I’m weak to when-the-ending-song-is-played-without-the-usual-credit
Holy shit I just read the actual english lyrics of the entire song and my god isn’t this too fitting for this episode??? I’m grossly sobbing.
Goodbye, my pure huntress and brave warrior.
I love when Karna’s spear completely disappears as the song ends.
As of this update, I have replayed Achilles vs Atalanta for 100 times
Semiramis: “I’m waiting for someone else, actually.” Jeanne: “Who?” Semiramis: “That damn brat who rams an airplane into my home” Jeanne: “PFFT.”
The suspicious bitch face look that Jeanne gives as she’s running to the other side of the throne room is what I’m living for
As far as Fate/Apocrypha goes, this episode is the best in terms of everything.
And my long-awaited Achilles vs Atalanta finally comes. A certain op gives a translation over that scene from the novel and as expected, it’s a thousand times more beautiful and sadder. Thank you op. I’m in peace right now.
*Glancing harshly at DW* Yo, THE REST OF APOCRYPHA SERVANTS WHEN?? We have a ton of people to reunite
NEXT: Hang on kids we got a train to Orleans
