Secrets of the Akademiya
Pairings: Various Genshin Men x Isekai'd!Reader
Summary: You applied to be a student at the Akademiya and were accepted! What you had in mind was to study and do well in school. What you didn't expect was to go on a field trip to the Mausoleum of King Deshret where everything goes downhill from there.
Note: I decided to add a little ✨ twist ✨ to this request because it's been a while, and I wanted to type out this request! I have decided to include the Eremites in this request; treasures are mentioned, but it's the Eremites that are the "center" of this story. Kind of. Not really. More like a brief mention. I took a while to update this story because the university has been keeping me busy, and I didn't have much time to work on this fic. Yes, this fic is over 10k words, but I hope you all liked it either way 🥹 To all of my new readers and returning readers, I don't post anywhere else but on Tumblr (Genshinluvr) and on AO3 (Aaliah_exo).
Warnings: Religious themes, mentions of human sacrifice, mentions of blood, somewhat of a hurt/comfort, but at the same time, it's not a hurt/comfort. Idk what to categorize it
Word Count: 11.3k

Today is the day when you should be receiving a letter from Sumeru Akademiya on whether you’ve been accepted or rejected from the prestigious institute of all Teyvat. You pace back and forth in the middle of the living room in the estate, rubbing your hands together anxiously while taking deep breaths. You feel your heart racing against your chest, sweat gathering in the palm of your hands, and you can hear your heart beating in your ears.
“Just seeing you pace back and forth for almost forty minutes makes me nervous,” Itto commented from the comfort of the couch, his legs propped up on the coffee table.
You stopped pacing and laughed nervously, “Sorry, Itto. I’m really anxious about getting the letter from Sumeru Akademiya.” You sighed, squeezing your hands nervously.
Childe perks up, “Oh? A letter from a prestigious institution of all Teyvat? Pray tell.” He gets up from his seat and walks over to where you stand.
You took a deep breath and let out a slow exhale, “Well, I applied to be a student at Sumeru Akademiya, and they informed me that I should be getting a letter from the institute very soon after I had submitted my application.” You explained.
Heizou looks at you with confusion, “I thought you didn’t plan on going to school in Teyvat because of how different education here is different from your world.”
You let Childe wrap you up in his arms, your left cheek pressing up against Childe’s chest while he rests his chin on the top of your head. You let out a defeated sigh, “I wasn’t planning on it, but I feel like the more I am away from an academic setting, the more my intelligence deteriorates.” Diluc lets out an amused chuckle after hearing your response, his head shaking and a small smile appearing on his face.
“Are you implying that the longer you’re out of school, the dumber you become?” Aether asks, resting his head on the cushion of the loveseat.
You sigh and nod your head, “That is correct, Aether.” You murmur, turning your head to bury your face into Childe’s chest. You had taken gap years within your education before and loved it, but you also hated it.
“This letter from Sumeru Akademiya, is it an acceptance letter?” Thoma asks, placing his right leg over his left leg.
“I hope it’s an acceptance letter.” You answered, your voice muffled against Childe’s chest. You turn to look at the men and give them a pained smile. “If I get rejected from Sumeru Akademiya, I won’t know what else to do with my life! Heck, I don’t even know what other schools to go to because the only institution I’ve ever heard of in your world is Sumeru Akademiya.” You talked at a rapid pace.
Ayato laughs softly and approaches you, “Calm down and take a deep breath. I’m sure you’ll be fine! Whether you get accepted into Sumeru Akademiya or not, we’re still proud of you for stepping out of your comfort zone and applying for the most prestigious institutions of Teyvat.” Ayato says, gently caressing your face with his left hand.
Venti giggles, “Choose your choice of words carefully, Lord Ayato. It looks like [Y/N] is going to cry.” Venti coos from where he is sitting.
Dainsleif turns to look at you, “Does no one ever tell you that they’re proud of you?”
You shoved your face back into Childe’s chest, wailing, “No!” Your arms automatically wrap around Childe’s waist, your tears beginning to soak through Childe’s burgundy shirt.
Gorou whimpers softly before walking over to where you and Childe stand. He comes up behind you and wraps his arms around your waist while giving you a reassuring head rub. You slowly pulled from Childe and chuckled to yourself. You turned around and hugged Gorou, your arms wrapping around his neck while petting his ears.
“We’re very proud of you,” Gorou whispers into your ears. He presses a light kiss on the top of your head, continuing to stroke your hair.
Tighnari clears his throat, “[Y/N], I know you’re an intelligent person, but you do know that the Akademiya is a very strenuous and stressful institution. It’ll keep you busy for days and hours.” Tighnari looks at you worriedly, and you don’t blame him for worrying. You get stressed out quickly, and when dealing with stress, you cry it out because it makes you feel better and less stressed out.
You nod your head, “Yes, Tighnari, I understand that the Akademiya isn’t a walk in the park. It’s tedious and will most likely cause me to start having gray hairs in my twenties.” You laugh nervously.
“If you don’t get accepted into the Akademiya, you can always work for the Knights of Favonious,” Kaeya says, leaning up against the wall near the staircase.
Diluc shakes his head immediately. “Absolutely not. They can work at Dawn Winery instead.” Diluc crosses his arms over his chest while giving Kaeya a glare from the corners of his eyes.
“Speaking of working, are you still working at that cafe? You worked there for two months, and all of a sudden, you’re not.” Baizhu tilts his head to the side while looking at you curiously.
You laughed nervously and slowly let go of Gorou from the hug. “I was working there, but I was fired.” You coughed into your fist, feeling your face grow hot under their gaze.
“What did you do to get fired?” Kazuha asks, looking at you worriedly.
“It’s nothing bad! I was simply defending myself!” You huffed, crossing your arms over your chest while looking away from the men with a small pout on your face.
Xiao narrows his eyes at you, making you squirm under his scrutiny. “What did you do exactly that caused you to get fired?” Xiao asks, crossing his arms in front of his stomach with an amused look on his face, waiting for you to respond.
You puckered your lips and rocked back and forth on your feet. “Do I have to say it?” You muttered, looking over at the four Harbingers who were waiting by the entrance of the estate.
“Yes, you have to tell them.” Pierro nods his head.
Pantalone chuckles while nodding his head. “Of course you do! You can’t keep your other boyfriends in the dark about it.”
Dottore snickers. “I’m sure they won’t be mad at you for doing the thing that got you fired. We’re proud of you for doing it.” Dottore says, smiling widely.
You sighed in defeat and nodded your head. “Okay, but please don’t be mad at me for doing it.” You mumbled, rubbing your sweaty hands on your pajama pants nervously.
“Well, whatever it is, I’m sure you had a valid reason to do it.” Albedo shrugs his shoulders.
You looked down and mumbled. The men squinted their eyes at you and looked at one another, confused. You peeked up from your lashes and let your gaze fall. You know that some will be disappointed in you for doing it, but you know there will be others (Childe, Scaramouche, and the other four Harbingers) who will make a comment on how you could do much better than what you’ve already done.
“Can you repeat that? We didn’t hear what you said.” Zhongli cocks an eyebrow at you, his arms crossed over his chest as he sits on the couch with his teacup in his hands.
“I punched a customer in the nose, and I broke his nose.” You blurted out, looking at the men nervously. “I was fired because I punched a paying customer in the nose.” You sighed, shoulders slumping while gazing at the wooden floor of the estate.
“And why did you punch the customer in the nose? I’m all for violence, but I want to know what lead up to you breaking someone’s nose,” Scaramouche says, gazing at you with interest.
“Who nose! Perhaps it's because the customer is an annoying person and needs to be punched in the face every once in a while!” Cyno says, walking into the living room with a faint smile on his face after saying his joke. Following Cyno was Al Haitham. He has an envelope in his hands. Al Haitham rolls his eyes after hearing Cyno saying a pun joke the minute they enter the estate.
Al Haitham sighs. “I’m getting tired of your jokes.” Al Haitham said, rubbing his face with his left hand.
Capitano points at the envelope in Al Haitham’s hands. “What is in the envelope?”
Heizou held up a finger. “Ah, ah, ah! We can’t be talking about one thing and then change the subject! I want to know what led up to [Y/N] punching the customer in the nose and breaking said nose!”
The men turn to look at you, waiting for your explanation. Perhaps it was a bad idea to say that you punched a customer in the face. You should’ve lied and said that you tried to steal mora from the cash register, but that wouldn’t work, considering one of the men had to pick you up from work.
“Okay, before any of you get mad at me for physically assaulting someone, I did it because he deserved it.” You said, looking at every man in the room. They slowly nod their heads, waiting for you to give them an explanation of the following events that led to you being fired. “Okay, so the reason why I punched the customer was that he groped my ass when I walked by him. The kicker is that I didn’t hit him the first time he did it; I warned him and told him to stop. And what did he do? He decided not to listen and continued to do it every time I walked by his table.” You clapped your hands sarcastically before rolling your eyes.
“You know, it’s a good thing that you don’t work there anymore! You look like you were in pain when you worked.” Venti says, giving you a sympathetic smile.
You scoffed and nodded your head at Venti’s comment. “It’s because I was! The high heels made my feet hurt so much that I could barely walk. Ask Albedo, Baizhu, and Tighnari! I was a frequent visitor at the infirmary while I was still working at the Maid Cafe.” You said, gesturing toward the three men.
Childe smiles. “Whoever that customer is, I’ll find him and beat him to a bloody pulp for sexually assaulting my snookums.” Childe clenches his hands into tight fists.
“Please do because we don’t need people like him roaming free in public,” You said, rubbing your eyes tiredly.
“Here’s your letter.” Al Haitham says, walking up to you and handing you the mint green envelope with the seal of the Akademiya. Your eyes widen, and you slowly grab the envelope from Al Haitham’s hands. Dear archons, this is it. The envelope in your hand is either an acceptance letter or a rejection letter.
“That is a fancy seal,” Aether says, letting out a low whistle.
Your hands drop to your side, and you look at them nervously. “I’m scared; I don’t think I can open the letter and read it myself.” You said, biting your nails anxiously.
“Do you want one of us to open the letter and read it for you?” Baizhu asks, walking over to where you stand. You nibbled on your bottom lip and looked down at the intimidating letter in your hand.
“I think [Y/N] should open it because it’ll be special, and it’s their letter! If someone else were to open their letter, it would take away that special moment of theirs!” Itto huffs, crossing his arms over his bare chest while puffing it out.
Gorou blinks at Itto before turning over to you. “Well, whenever you’re ready!” Gorou says, smiling at you reassuringly.
You nod your head and take a deep breath before opening the envelope. You pull the paper out from the envelope and unfold the thick paper. While you were scanning the letter to yourself, the men around you leaned forward with anticipation. Your eyes widen, and you look at the others.
“I got in.” You whispered.
“You got in?!” They ask simultaneously, walking over to where you stand.
Tears blur your vision as you hold up the letter, “I got accepted!” You sobbed. Al Haitham was the first one to tackle you into a hug. Al Haitham wraps his arms tightly around your waist and twirls you around.
“They got accepted!” Al Haitham smiles widely, burying his face into your hair and hugging you tightly.
“Congratulations, [Y/N]! We’re so proud of you!” Diluc says, rubbing your back.
Dainsleif’s eyes widen, “Why are you crying?” Dainsleif looked panicked.
You pulled out of Al Haitham’s arms and wiped your tears, laughing tearfully. “Tears of joy and disbelief because, holy shit, I’m officially a student at Sumeru Akademiya!” You gasped.
Zhongli wipes your tears away with a small smile on his face. “We knew you could do it, and we’re very proud of you,” Zhongli says softly, cupping your face in both of his hands.
“Oh! Does that mean we get to see you wear those fancy uniforms those Akademiya students wear?” Kaeya asks, stroking his chin.
You nod your head. “Yes! Speaking of uniforms, when do I get my uniform exactly?”
Tighnari hums. “That, I do not know. Perhaps you’ll get your uniform on your first day at the institution.”
“Are you ready to be an Akademiya student? If you have any questions, you can always refer back to Tighnari and me.” Cyno says, giving you a small smile. Al Haitham rolls his eyes and gives Cyno a sharp jab to the ribs with his elbows. Cyno slowly turns to look over at Al Haitham with a glare. His jaws clenched tightly as if he was refraining himself from saying something.
Thoma chuckles awkwardly. “So, [Y/N], do you know when your first day at the institute is?” Thoma asks, trying to change the subject.
You blinked at Thoma and looked down at the letter in your hands before skimming through the words. The letter did not mention anything about when the quarter at the Akademiya is going to start. Shit. Does that mean you’re going to have to guess what day you have to show up?
You clear your throat. “The letter didn’t say anything about the first day of class.” You muttered, looking over at the three men.
“If you’d like, we can walk you around the campus to help you find your class and get your uniform!” Gorou says. You think about it for a moment. If you were to walk around Sumeru Akademiya with over twenty people following you around, would that draw unwanted attention? Actually, would that be allowed? You wouldn’t mind if the men accompanied you around the institution on your first day to help you find your classes and get your uniform and your textbooks. Plus, the men are also young, so they would blend in just fine! Minus their attire since they won’t be wearing uniforms like the students.
You were about to say something when something fell from the paper you held in your hands. You grabbed it off the ground and looked at it. It was your class schedule. Your eyes nearly popped out of your sockets after seeing how many classes you were taking. Twenty units in total—that’s a total of five classes you’re taking, and each of the course you’re taking have four units.
Ayato peeks from your shoulders, “Oh, it seems like you’re taking mostly biology courses.”
“I’m not mentally or emotionally prepared for anything.” You sighed dramatically. “But I’m kind of excited to see where this takes me!” You said.
Looking at your schedule, the class that starts first is your botany class. Tighnari’s eyes immediately lit up when you told him the courses you were taking and insisted that he could help you with your studies if you needed any assistance. His tail was wagging so fast with excitement that you were worried that his tail might fly off.
Xiao looks over your shoulders and stares down at your class schedule with his eyebrows furrowing. “Your first class is tomorrow morning,” Xiao stated. He crosses his arms over his chest, eyes scanning through your schedule to memorize them.
“Yeah, that means I’ll have to get up early tomorrow morning for school.” You rubbed your eyes.
“Well, the good thing is that your morning class starts around eight in the morning. We’ll wake you up around six.” Albedo says, crossing his arms over his chest.
Your eyebrows shot to your hairline. “Why six in the morning?” You look at Albedo with wide eyes in disbelief.
Kazuha chuckles at your reaction. “Well, you need to eat breakfast before going to school, and you need time to get ready for school.” Kazuha answers.
You sighed in defeat and nodded your head. Kazuha is right. You need time to get ready for school and have breakfast before leaving for your first class of the quarter. Even though you’d skip breakfast and lunch when you were still in your world, you know the men wouldn’t allow you to fall into your bad habit of skipping meals.
“I think the earlier we get you to school, the more you’ll be able to grab your uniform and textbooks sooner without having to deal with an influx of Akademiya nerds,” Scaramouche says. The corner of Scaramouche’s lips quirks up when Tighnari, Al Haitham, and Cyno shoot a glare in his direction.
Dottore releases a sad sigh. “As much as I would love to show you around the Akademiya, unfortunately, I can’t,” Dottore says. A small pout appeared on his face.
You look at Dottore quizzically before looking at Cyno, Al Haitham, and Tighnari. They shook their heads as if telling you not to question it just yet. You nod your head reluctantly and approach Dottore to give him a small squeeze on his shoulders.
“It’s okay, Dottore! If you’re not able to accompany me and the others around the Akademiya, you can always stop by when you’re able to in between my classes.” You said, showing him your schedule.
“How about you return to the abode in between your classes? How big is the gap between your morning and afternoon class?” Pierro asks, towering over you as he tries to get a glimpse of your schedule for the quarter.
You looked at your schedule and calculated the time gap between each of your classes for the week. “Well, it varies. The courses that I’m taking on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays have a five-hour gap, whereas the courses I’m taking on Tuesdays and Thursdays have a three-hour gap.” You answered
Pantalone claps his hands with a smile on his face. “Wonderful! Then that means you can return to the abode to focus on your studies in the estate’s library before your afternoon class begins!” said Pantalone.
“What do you think, [Y/N]? Do you want to stay at the Akademiya while waiting for your afternoon class to begin, or do you want to return to the abode and study in the estate’s library while waiting for the afternoon class to start?” Capitano asks, looking at you curiously from where he is standing.
You tapped on your chin. “I think I’m going to alternate! Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, I’ll return to the abode to study because the gaps between my classes are longer compared to the gaps on Tuesdays and Thursdays.” You stated, nodding your head with confidence.
Diluc nods his head. “Alright! That sounds like a plan.” Diluc says with a slight smile on his face.
Thoma perks up. “Oh! Since you’re going to be studying at the Akademiya’s library on Tuesdays and Thursdays, do you want us to pack lunch for you by any chance? I believe that eating homecooked meals is better than having to spend mora every day for lunch at school.” said Thoma.
Your eyes lit up at Thoma’s suggestion, and you nodded your head eagerly. “Yes, please! That would be nice!” You said. You paused for a brief moment, growing shy. “Since I have a shorter gap on Tuesdays and Thursdays, can we have lunch together somewhere in Sumeru?” You asked shyly, swaying to the side with your hands behind your back.
Aether smiles widely. “That sounds fun! We should do that!” Aether exclaims, looking over at the others, who nod their heads in agreement.
“Perhaps we can go to the desert one day and have a picnic there with all twenty-five of us,” Heizou says, smiling at you cutely.
Cyno’s eyes widen. “Ah! Speaking of the desert, I also need to collect some scarabs while we’re visiting the desert,” Cyno says.
Itto’s eyes light up, a big grin stretching across his face. “Dude! We should totally have a beetle fight! My onikabuto versus your scarabs!”
“What will the prize be for the winner?” Kazuha asks.
You snorted. “Definitely not mora, because we don’t want this to turn into gambling.” You said, giving Childe and Pantalone a look, who slowly put their bags of mora away without making eye contact with you. “Anyway, I need to prepare for tomorrow. I don’t know what I’ll need, but I’ll bring two notebooks and three pencils just in case. Once I attend all of my classes on the first week, I’ll get the supplies that are needed for those courses.” You said.
The entire day, you and the men planned on how the quarter was going to look for you. From your study habits when you arrive at the abode on Tuesdays and Thursdays to how many breaks you should take in between your studies. All of the preparation and planning made you feel nervous, and you’re just hoping that the first week of school goes well. You let out a small cough and cleared your throat, rubbing your throat.
“Uh-oh. You’re not getting sick, are you?” Baizhu asks, looking at you worriedly. Baizhu walks up to you and places the palm of his hand over your forehead, and lets out a relieved sigh. The others step up to you and look at you worriedly while you look at them sheepishly. It’s been a while since you had nervous coughs. You start coughing whenever you get nervous about something, and it’s never a big deal.
“I’m fine, you guys! Whenever I get nervous about something— like an event, an appointment, and other things like that, I start coughing because of how anxious I am.” You cleared your throat, mouthing a thank you to Zhongli when he handed you a cup of water. You take a sip from the cup and clear your throat.
Tighnari places a hand on your shoulder and gives your shoulder a reassuring squeeze. “It’s okay to be nervous about your first day of school. It’s normal, and you’ll be fine.” He gives you a small smile.
You huffed sadly. “I hope so. My heart is beating out of my chest.” You grumbled, rubbing your chest with your hand. “I want everything to go well for my first quarter at the Akademiya. I don’t know what I’ll do if I don’t do well in school.” You muttered.
Venti pouts and hugs you tightly. “It’s okay, [Y/N]! You got this! We believe in you!” He nuzzles his cheeks against yours before pressing a delicate kiss on the apples of your cheeks.
You continue to let Venti smother you with affection. Affection and comfort were something you needed right now before getting thrown into the world of Akademiya. After getting things ready for tomorrow, you and the men lounged around the abode, basking in each other’s presence. From time to time, the men would take turns cuddling with you, making sure that you were at ease instead of being riddled with anxiety.
Monday came sooner than you expected because the first things you woke up to were Kaeya and Gorou, shaking you awake while your alarm was blaring. Xiao rushes over to your alarm and turns it off, rubbing his ears with a wince.
“I’m impressed that you can sleep through an alarm that is blaring into your ears,” Kaeya says, crossing his arms over his chest with a small smirk on his face.
Gorou whimpers and rubs his ears with a pout on his face. “My ears are sensitive. [Y/N]’s alarm clock blaring for five minutes is giving me a slight headache.” Gorou rubs the back of his neck with a tired sigh.
Xiao crosses his arms over his chest and gives you a look. “I thought you were a light sleeper,” Xiao stated. He raised an eyebrow at you while tapping his right foot on the floor, his arms crossed while waiting for you to respond.
You rub the sleep out of your eyes as you slowly sit up on your warm and comfortable bed. “I am, but I guess I’m so tired that I slept through the alarm.” You answered.
Scaramouche peeks his head into your bedroom. “Well, you need to get up, get dressed, and come downstairs and have breakfast before we leave!” said Scaramouche.
You nodded your head and tossed your blanket off your body before you got out of your bed sluggishly and stretched your limbs with a big yawn. No matter how much you slept that night, you’ll always feel tired. You grabbed your clothes from your dresser before going to the bathroom to get ready for school. You were finished within six minutes (you were rushing because you slept through your alarm and you didn’t want the others to wait for too long) and were downstairs almost immediately.
“You need to be careful when you run down the stairs. You could’ve injured yourself when you slipped.” Dainsleif says, sipping on his coffee.
“Sorry, I was in a rush.” You mumbled, stabbing your pancake with your fork. “Today is not going how I hoped it would.” You sighed, shoving a slice of pancake into your mouth. Today better be a good day because if it continues to get worse, you don’t know how else you’ll have to cope with it throughout the day at school.
“Don’t worry your pretty little head about this! Today has barely begun, and you’re not late for school!” Childe reaches over and caresses your head with a reassuring smile on his face.
Zhongli nods his head. “Childe’s right. Today has barely begun. I’m sure today will progressively get better as time goes by.” Zhongli says, giving you a small smile.
You rest your head in the palm of your hand with your elbows propped up on the table. “But I’m going to be away from the abode for hours and won’t see any of you until my last class finishes.” This was going to be the first time you were going to be away from the men for hours. Are you nervous? Yes, because you don’t like being in an unfamiliar place surrounded by people you don’t know. It was one of your biggest fears when you were a child, hence why you always scream and cry when your parents drop you off at school.
“You’ll be alright. If you like, we can take turns visiting you at the Akademiya’s library every hour to make sure you’re okay and how your studies are going.” Ayato suggested. Ayato reaches over to your left hand and gives your hand a comforting squeeze.
Dottore chuckles and leans back in his seat. “While it’s sweet for you all to want to check up on [Y/N] throughout the day while they’re at school, it seems like you’re all like their babysitter rather than a significant other,” Dottore says, reaching over to grab his mug of coffee.
Albedo frowns at Dottore’s comment. “[Y/N] doesn’t like to be alone. They get nervous when they’re alone in an unfamiliar place. We want to make sure that they’re okay throughout the day.” Albedo says, giving Dottore the side eye.
Capitano elbows Dottore in the ribs. “I believe that they will be checking up on [Y/N] every few hours for the beginning of the week. After all, the first week of school is always nerve-wracking.” Capitano says.
After finishing up your breakfast, you grabbed your backpack and walked out of the estate with the men (excluding the four Harbingers) following after you. The twenty-one of you left the abode and stepped foot into Sumeru. You clutched onto your backpack straps tightly until your knuckles turned white, your heart beginning to race against your chest.
This was it; today’s the day when you’re officially a student at the Akademiya. The inside of your throat begins to itch the closer all of you got closer to the large doors. You subconsciously rub your throat and start clearing your throat, wincing at the unbearable itch inside your throat. Oh no. You swallowed your saliva, hoping it’ll ease the irritation, but it didn’t do anything at all.
“Are you okay?” Venti asks, patting your shoulders.
You nodded your head and continued to clear your throat. “My throat itches. I’m trying not to cough.” You sighed, stepping into the building.
“Why not cough once? I think it’ll help if you cough at least once.” Thoma suggested, his green eyes scanning the interior of the Akademiya.
You frantically shook your head. “If I cough at least once to soothe my throat, I’ll have a coughing fit.” You reply.
“There’s nothing to be nervous about! You have us with you!” Heizou says, throwing his arms over your shoulders while snuggling up against you with a smile on his face. You give Heizou a wary smile and let yourself melt into his arms. Heizou is right; you have the men with you, and there’s nothing to worry about at all! Other than the fact that this will go on for today, a few days, or only a week.
“Pluuuuus, Al Haitham, Tighnari, and Cyno can help guide us around the Akademiya to help you familiarize your surroundings,” Aether says. Aether butts in between you and Heizou with a Cheshire smile on his face, ignoring the glare that Heizou was giving him.
“Let's go pick up my uniform.” You sighed, letting Al Haitham lead the way.
After picking up your uniform, you and the others stood outside of the Akademiya. Since it was still early morning, there weren’t many students hanging around on campus. Diluc held your backpack in his hands while Al Haitham was helping you put on your uniform.
“Awwwww, snookums! You look so cute in your uniform!” Childe squeals, tackling you into a hug once you’ve correctly put on your uniform.
Al Haitham smiles at you. “You’re officially an Akademiya student! How does it feel?” Al Haitham asks, adjusting the minor things on your uniform.
“It feels weird, but I’m not complaining.” You said. You waved your arms and watched the sleeves flutter from the movements. “Now I look like I’m part of a cult.” You said.
“Speaking of cults. If there are any students that approach you and invite you to join the Eremites, do not join them.” Tighnari says, clutching both of your shoulders and lightly shaking you.
You look at Tighnari cluelessly, with your head tilting to the side. “What are Eremites?” You ask, looking over at the others with a questioning gaze.
“They hail from the desert region of Sumeru. They also worship the Scarlet King, also known as King Deshret. Do not associate yourself with them, do not speak to them, do not let them lure you in.” Cyno states.
You look at Cyno with wide eyes after hearing his explanation. “Alright, I will not get near them or anything of the sort,” You said slowly.
Kaeya smiles. “Good because that’s the last thing we want to hear when we ask you, ‘how was school today?’” Kaeya pats the top of your head.
“Now that you got your uniform let’s go find where your classes are located,” Diluc says. He hands you your backpack.
Your classes are, luckily, located in the same building and on the same floor. As for the lectures, the lecture room was located in the next building over, which shouldn’t be a long walk for you. After almost an hour of searching for where your classes are located, you turn to the men and give them a small smile.
“It looks like classes are going to start soon.” You said, looking over at the clock that hung on the wall.
Kazuha sighs. “So soon? I didn’t expect time to go by so fast.” Kazuha murmurs.
“Good luck in school! You’ll do great!” Ayato says, giving you a gentle smile before bringing you into his arms and hugging you to his chest. Ayato leans down and plants a kiss on your temples, rubbing your back.
Itto pouts and walks up to you and Ayato. “You’ll be in school for hours, studying. While I’m going to be bored at the abode, missing your cute face.” Itto reaches over and squeezes your cheeks lightly.
“Remember not to stress out. If you need guidance on anything, you can always ask your professors, teacher assistants, Al Haitham, Tighnari, and Cyno.” Dainsleif says. Dainsleif gives you a firm hug and rests his head on your chin.
“If you need help with anything regarding alchemy, I’m always happy to help,” Albedo says, giving you a small smile.
You smile and nod your head. “If I need help with anything regarding school, I will definitely go to you guys for assistance!” You said.
Students began to walk toward their classrooms, talking amongst themselves. You feel your heart jump into your throat, causing you to cough into your elbow. You cleared your throat and gave the men a reassuring smile to let them know that you were okay and that you were just nervous.
“As you can see, I’m a little bit nervous about my first day.” You said. You scratch the back of your neck with an embarrassed smile on your face.
Baizhu sighs. “We’ll need to get that checked out regardless.” Baizhu pats your shoulder.
You hugged each man before reluctantly pulling away from their hug. It almost seemed like they didn’t want to let go of you as much as you didn’t want to let go of them. Once the hugs were over, you gripped tightly on the backpack straps and adjusted the hat on your head.
“If anyone tries to hurt you in any way, let me know, and I’ll deal with them,” Xiao says.
You gave him a smile and nodded your head. You know you can always rely on Xiao to be there for you if there is any danger. And if you needed Xiao to get you a glass cup of water while you’re in the middle of reading and were too lazy to go downstairs to get the drink yourself. You sighed and pursed your lips. You’re nervous, but you’ll be okay.
“I’ll see you all later,” you said.
You give each of them a smile before slowly walking to where the lecture is being held for your first class. You stopped at the door and turned to look back where the men stood. They were all smiling at you; some were waving goodbye. You smiled back and waved at them before stepping into the lecture hall. The lecture hall was huge; it could hold up to around five hundred people. You chose a seat closest to the front where the lecturer stood mainly because not only did you want to hear them clearly, but your eyesight wasnt the best, so you needed to be seated in the front to be able to see the board.
Once you have chosen your seat and sat down, you pulled out your notebook and pencil as students began to trickle into the lecture hall. It’s safe to say that your first class wasn’t complicated at all despite the course name looking intimidating at first glance. The lecturer was a lovely man; he was the type of professor that you had when you were still in your world. Despite the lecturer being an easygoing person, you have the sense that he’s not an easy grader, nor does he give a small number of assignments.
The first class flew by despite it being a two-and-a-half-hour lecture class. You walked out of the lecture hall, stretching your arms and legs with a yawn. With the large gap between your morning and afternoon classes, you have decided to explore the Akademiya since you needed to stop by the library to grab a textbook for that class. While walking to the House of Daena, you see a few Akademiya students handing out flyers, stopping other students in their tracks to start a conversation with them, only for those students to decline something and walk off.
“Halt! You there!” You were startled by the voice coming from behind you.
You stopped in your tracks and slowly turned around, only to make eye contact with a tanned male with black hair and glasses. He walks up to you before stopping in front of you, towering over you. You couldn’t help but feel intimidated by the look he was giving you.
“Yes?” You squeaked. “How can I help you?”
You gulped silently and tightened your grip on your backpack straps. Oh, archons; a sudden conversation with someone you don’t know? Someone you don’t have classes in common with? Heck, he wasn’t even in the same Darshan as you! You’re part of the Amurta (specialty is biology), while he's part of the Haravatat (specialty is technology).
“My name’s Na’im, and I am part of a secret student organization! We are currently recruiting more students like you to join our organization!” Na’im says, almost striking a pose.
You look at Na’im with interest. “An organization, you say?” You quirked your eyebrow at him.
Na’im smiles and crosses his arms over his chest. “That is right! Judging by your appearance, I’m assuming you’re new to the Akademiya,” said Na’im.
“And you’re correct….” You trailed off, looking at Na’im skeptically.
“So, new Akademiya student, what do you think about joining a student organization as a way to make new friends?” Na’im throws his arms over your shoulders, startling you.
You slowly take his arms off your shoulders. “That depends on what organization it is and how my schedule plays out for the Akademiya. After all, I’m here for my studies, not to make new friends.” You stated.
Na’im suddenly leans in close to your face, causing you to lean back. “This organization is a secret. Hence why, it’s called the secret student organization.” Na’im whispers.
“Well, if it’s a secret, then why bother recruiting new members out in the open?” You huffed.
Na’im chuckles and takes a step back. “Oh, the other students recruiting for new members aren’t part of the organization I’m in. They’re part of the student body and are stopping students to ask questions regarding their first impression of the Akademiya and what Darshan they’re part of.”
You rub your temples and let out a slow sigh. “Okay, so why are you recruiting me then? Out of all people you could’ve approached, you decided to approach me instead.” You said, frowning at the man in front of you.
Na’im laughs. “Oh, the head of the organization spotted you earlier this morning with your large group of friends! He told me to recruit you specifically after noticing that you’re very close with Al Haitham.”
“And you guys have been actively seeking me out ever since the head of the organization spotted me with my “friends” and Al Haitham?” You raised your eyebrow at Na’im.
He nods his head. “That is correct!” Na’im exclaims confidently.
“Well, since we are here right now. What is this organization you speak of?” You inquired. You prop both of your hands on your hips, waiting for Na’im to answer your pressing question.
Na’im leans into your ears. “Have you ever heard of the Scarlet King? Also known as King Deshret?” Na’im whispers.
Your eyes widen for a brief moment before you slowly take a step back away from him. Was Na’im one of the Eremites? There’s nothing wrong with being an Eremite, but those who are devoted followers of the Scarlet King tend to be…. Unique. Quite frankly, you can’t find the correct word to describe the loyal followers of the Scarlet King, specifically those who genuinely believe that King Deshret is going to resurrect. You must choose your words wisely because there’s no way you’re going to get into some kind of drama with another Akademiya student on your first day of school. The same Akademiya student is part of a secret organization that is dedicated to King Deshret, one that is trying to recruit you to be one of their members.
“I’m sorry, Na’im, but I’m not a religious person. I have no interest in joining any religious organizations.” You shrugged your shoulders.
Na’im gives you a look of disbelief. “What! What do you mean you have no interest in joining the organization!? Do you believe in the Scarlet King?!” He hisses at you.
You pursed your lips and slowly shook your head. “As I’ve previously stated, I’m not a religious person and have no interest in joining any religious organizations. I’ve heard of the Scarlet King, but again, I’m not interested.” You said.
“B-But—” You cut him off with a shake of your head.
“I’m sorry, Na’im, but I’m not interested in joining any religious organizations. Especially one that is a secret,” You said.
Without any other word, you turned around and continued to walk to the House of Daena, ignoring Na’im’s sputters of protest while trying to get your attention. Upon arriving at the House of Daena, you immediately went to check out a textbook that is needed for your class before sitting at a desk and pulling your notebook and pencil out. You leaned on your left arm and began scrawling down notes for the course, reading over the notes you’d taken during the lecture.
As promised, each man would visit you in the House of Daena while you were studying and reading over the notes you’ve taken. Al Haitham, Cyno, and Tighnari were the ones that lingered the longest, making sure you understood the materials your lecturer went over this morning. Tighnari went on a tangent about the plants in Sumeru, which you didn’t mind at all because you know you’ll need to know these things later in your botany class.
The day went by in a dreary blur; you went to your last class for the day, and now you find yourself sitting at the dining table in the abode. Your textbooks are stacked on top of each other to your left on the table, and notebooks and pieces of paper are opened and lying all over the place. Your face was buried in your book, your hand occupied with writing notes, unaware of the looks you were getting from the men in the estate.
“Ahem.” Gorou clears his throat, trying to grab your attention.
Your eyes continue to scan the textbook in front of you as you write down the important information that will be on the midterms. Your eyes feel tired and dry from how long you’ve been staring at the textbook and notebook, but you were able to get down many things for your classes. It was one of your biggest accomplishments for the day, and you hope you can make it routine and pass all of your courses with flying colors.
“[Y/N].” Scaramouche tosses a bread roll at your head, snapping you out of your thoughts.
You blinked and looked up at the men. “Sorry, I was busy.” You cleared your throat, sitting up in your seat and rubbing your eyes.
Zhongli gives you a soft smile. “You should take a break from your studies, dearest. It’s dinner time, and you haven’t touched your food.” Zhongli says, gesturing toward the now cold food in front of you.
You stared at the food intently and then looked around your area. “How long have I been studying?” You whispered to yourself before scratching your head cluelessly. “Sorry, I’ll clean up and finish my dinner.” You said. You stood up and began to organize your textbooks and notebooks.
“Did they assign you homework already? It’s only the first day!” Childe mutters, getting up from his seat to help you organize your things around.
You made a face. “Not exactly, but I want to be ahead of the class in studies. I have a feeling that I’m going to be buried in assignments after this week.” You reply, walking over to the living room with Childe following along to put your textbooks on the coffee table. “Well, maybe after today or something like that. The Akademiya is a prestigious institute; I wouldn’t be surprised if tomorrow’s class is going to have assignments once the session is over.” You added. You and Childe walk back to the dining room before sitting back down in your seats.
“It’s good to be committed to your studies, but remember to take frequent breaks, or else you’ll burn yourself out,” Thoma said.
You laugh nervously as you pull your bowl forward and reach for the spoon. “I can’t promise you all that! After all, I need to pass all of my courses and do well.” You reply.
Dainsleif sighs and pinches the bridge of his nose. “We understand that your studies are important, but please, take breaks here and there when you are studying. It’s important to rest.” Dainsleif states.
You nodded your head slowly. “Alright, I’ll take breaks in between my studies after a certain amount of time.” You said.
The rest of your week was the same as the first day of school. All you did was study, go to your classes, start on assignments and take notes. After your first encounter with Na’im, he never approached you after that, much to your relief. Everything was sailing smoothly at school, and you were doing reasonably well in all of our courses. The one thing that bothers you about the Akademiya, or schools in Teyvat in general, is that you’re not able to check what grade you currently have in all of your courses, like how you were able to back in your world through CANVAS.
Sometimes when you’re studying at the abode, the men would keep you company. You’d be sitting at a desk in the abode’s library while the others are lounging around, reading, or taking naps on the chairs in the library. Your nose is always sticking in your textbooks, taking notes, and doing your assignments for your biology courses, hardly sparing the men a single glance. This continued for the next three weeks of being a student at the Akademiya.
While studying, Zhongli would drop by the library in the abode, placing a plate of sliced fruits on the table for you to snack on before pressing a kiss on the side of your head before leaving the room. At the same time, Ayato would give you boba to drink while you were in the middle of your studies, giving you a light squeeze on your shoulders before taking the empty plate out from the library.
By the time night fell, everyone had bid you goodnight with forehead kisses, hugs, and words of encouragement. The men soon went to bed, under the impression that you would go to bed once you were done with your assignments and studies. Until one of them had woken up in the middle of the night, feeling parched. Aether nearly jumped out of his skin when he saw you walking out from the kitchen in the dark estate with a book and a cup of water in your hand.
“[Y/N]!? Why are you still awake?!” Aether whispers loudly in the dark, reaching over to the wall to search for the light switch.
You rubbed your eyes. “I was studying. I went to the kitchen to grab a snack before heading back to the library,” You said.
Once Aether felt the switch, Aether flicked the light switch up; the room was now flooded with lights, blinding the two of you. Aether squeezes his eyes shut and slowly opens his eyes to adjust to the brightness of the light.
“What’s going on?” Heizou grumbles, peeking his head from the top of the stairs, squinting down at both you and Aether.
You blinked at Heizou and then at Aether. “Is everyone in this house a light sleeper or something?” You ask, adjusting the slipper on your foot. “I thought I was the only light sleeper in the house.” You mumbled to yourself.
“And why are the three of you awake? It’s two in the morning.” Itto props his hands on his hips, giving you, Aether and Heizou a sleepy glare.
“I was studying.” You stated, holding up your textbook for Itto and the others to see. “I’m still not done studying either. I’m contemplating whether I should make coffee to continue my studies or just study without coffee.” You said.
“You should be getting some sleep. You have school tomorrow; you shouldn’t be staying up so late.” Diluc says.
“But—”
“No buts, [Y/N]. We understand that you prioritize your studies, but don’t let that get in the way of your sleep either. If you don’t get plenty of rest, you won’t be able to focus on your studies.” Zhongli stated, frowning at you.
Kaeya approaches you and takes your textbook from your hands. “I’ll take that! You should be going to sleep now, young scholar.” He pats your head with a tiny smile on his face.
“But I need to study! I have a midterm coming up, and if I don’t pass, I won’t be able to go on this research field trip my instructor has planned for us!” You said, pouting at Kaeya as you tried to reach for the textbook.
Venti gently grabs your arm. “You’ll be fine, [Y/N]. Getting some rest wouldn’t have a detrimental impact on your grades.” Venti says. He tries to ease your anxiety by giving your arm a reassuring rub.
“Research field trip, you say?” Cyno hums, looking at you curiously.
You nod your head. “It’s in the desert, and we’re going to be taking some plants from the desert and experimenting on whether they can survive outside of the desert or not!” You said.
“Eh, the answer is quite obvious if you ask me,” Tighnari says.
Baizhu sighs. “Whether you want to go on that trip or not, you still need to get some sleep,” Baizhu says, giving you a comforting smile.
“Alright. I’ll get some sleep, even though I won’t be getting much anyway.” You sigh in defeat, walking up the stairs to your bedroom.
Ayato looks at the others. “How do we know that they’ll actually be sleeping? For all we know, they could have another textbook in their bedroom and read that instead.” He crosses his arms over his chest while stroking his chin.
“I’ll make sure they get some sleep.” Al Haitham says, turning around to follow after you.
Kazuha leans to whisper to Scaramouche. “Do you think he’s taking this chance to snuggle with [Y/N]?” Scaramouche quirks his eyebrows at Kazuha’s question.
“That’s a huge possibility. And as much as I would love to intervene and be a cock block, I’m too tired to do anything about it.” Scaramouche answers, scratching the back of his head with a small pout on his face.
You were about to close your bedroom door when a hand stopped the door from closing completely. You backed away from the door and looked at the door curiously, only to see Al Haitham opening the door wider before entering your room. Al Haitham closed the door behind him and turned to face you, his arms over his chest.
“I’m guessing you’re going to make sure that I actually sleep, aren’t you?” You ask. Al Haitham nods his head in response.
You walked over to your bed and laid down beneath the blanket, and patted the empty side of your bed. If Al Haitham was going to make sure that you were going to go to bed, he might as well either join you on your bed or sit at the chair that is pushed into your desk. Al Haitham walked to your bed and sat down with his back pressing up against the headboard before pulling his book out to read.
“Close enough.” You sighed, hugging your spare pillow against your chest before drifting off to sleep.
A few hours later, you woke up to the sound of your alarm blaring in your ears. You shot out of your bed and slammed your hand on the alarm, silencing it. You sighed and lay back down on your bed, rubbing your eyes tiredly. You shouldn’t have stayed up late last night. You did not want to get up from bed at all. You closed your eyes for a moment, trying to calm your racing heart.
“You know you have to get up, right?” Al Haitham murmurs into your ears.
You sigh. “Unfortunately, I do.” You frowned and slowly sat up on your bed, attempting to rub the sleep out of your eyes. You looked down and noticed that Al Haitham’s arms were wrapped around your waist. You looked over at him and realized that he was staring at you. You lightly pat his cheek with a tiny smile on your face before reluctantly leaving the comfort of your bed to get ready for school.
Once you’ve stepped foot into the Akademiya, the atmosphere feels off. You couldn’t put your finger on it, but you knew something was wrong. When you got to your first class, your lecturer informed everyone that the field trip was today. You did a double-take and blinked at the lecturer in confusion. The field trip was today? How could the field trip be today when the midterm hasn’t happened yet? Or did it happen?
“I’m so confused.” You whispered. You adjusted your school uniform before following your instructor and your other classmates. Perhaps the field trip was happening before the midterm. You have no idea what was going on anymore; you’re so tired and out of it.
The instructor claps his hands to grab everyone’s attention. “We will have a joint field trip with other students and instructors from the other Darshan. Na’im is the tour guide because he has a lot of knowledge about the Mausoleum of King Deshret.” Na’im steps forward and waves at the students, smiling widely.
You feel your heart drop to your ass. You audibly gulped and looked away when Na’im looked over in your direction. The field trip was going to take place at the Mausoleum of King Deshret? How come you couldn’t recall the exact location of the field trip?
You lean over to whisper to one of your classmates. “Since when were we going to the Mausoleum of King Deshret? I thought we were just going to explore the desert for the redcrest?” You ask.
Aisha shrugs her shoulders. “The instructor never said anything about the exact location, but him revealing it so suddenly is suspicious,” Aisha grumbles.
“Isn’t it, I don’t know, forbidden to go to the Mausoleum of King Deshret?” Muna asks.
You shrug your shoulders. “I wish I knew. I can’t help but get a bad feeling about this joint field trip, especially when Na’im is our tour guide for the entirety of the trip.” You murmured.
Muna’s eyes widen. “You have a bad feeling about Na’im too?!” She whispers.
“Too!?” You looked at her, stunned.
Aisha rubs her throbbing temples. “Na’im is just some weirdo who is desperate for more people to join his organization. Muna and I declined his offer before he could even mention what his club was about.” Aisha explains.
You tighten your grip around your backpack strap before you and your classmates are taken to the nearest waypoint. The desert was surprisingly warm, and the cool breeze made the heat more bearable compared to the time you and your boyfriends attempted to surf on the sand dunes. It didn’t turn out well. You and Itto got a mouth full of sand after face-planting into the sand.
Na’im was confidently leading the students through the ancient ruins. Na’im was talking about the history of the ruins, talking about the Scarlet King, the Eremites, and many other things you could barely process because of how nervous you were. While the ancient ruins were beautiful, you couldn’t help but get an inkling feeling that danger was looming over your head.
“You may all explore the surrounding area! Please do not stray too far from the site!” The lecturer announces.
The students murmured to one another before reluctantly exploring the surrounding. You walked to one of the monuments and looked at it in awe. The temples in the desert never cease to amaze you. But this temple, in particular, gives you goosebumps.
“So! What do you think of the temple?” Na’im asks, standing beside you with his arms over his chest.
“The temple is beautiful! It’s also eerie in a way.” You respond, keeping a safe distance from Na’im.
“Do you want to see something cool about the temple?” Na’im asks, a big smile appearing on his face.
You look at Na’im in confusion. “I thought we’re not allowed to roam far into the temple. Isn’t it dangerous?” You ask, taking a step back.
“It’s only dangerous if you go alone! Since I’m the tour guide of this field trip, it won’t be dangerous, and you should be okay!” Na’im says.
“No, thank you, Na’im. I would rather play it safe than be sorry.” You politely declined before walking away.
Everyone was called to regroup in the center of the temple. Na’im then guided everyone to the platform that was in the temple. The platform started to rise slowly, only for it to stutter and come to a complete stop. Everyone on the platform went silent.
“Are we stuck?” Muna whispers.
“Dear archons, I hope not.” Aisha whimpers, holding onto Muna’s arms tightly. You looked around the platform, trying to find the solution to escape. You ended up smelling a strange aroma.
“Does anyone smell that?” Omar, one of your classmates, asks.
An overwhelming smell starts to flood the area, causing some students to cough at the overwhelming scent. Your vision starts to become blurry, making you lean up against the wall and slowly slide down the wall. Everyone around you soon dropped to the ground like flies, falling over each other. Your eyelids grew heavy, and you soon lost consciousness.
You jolted awake and looked at your surroundings. You were still in the temple, but somewhere you couldn’t pinpoint. Your hands were tied behind your back, and you were bound against a statue. Your head was hurting a lot; it felt like someone had hit you at the back of your head, knocking you unconscious.
“Ah! You’re finally awake! I guess now we can start the ritual.” Na’im says, emerging from the shadows.
“Ritual? What ritual?” You ask.
“Oh, nothing! It’s something the nonbelievers wouldn’t understand.” Na’im says nonchalantly, his hands crossed behind his back. He stops in front of you and gazes down at you.
“Nonbelievers? Ritual? You’re not doing what I think you’re doing, are you?” You ask, looking up at Na’im nervously.
Na’im laughs and looks over to the people behind him, pointing over at you as if you were some joke. Oh, wait, to them, you are. You slowly leaned to the side to get a better look at the group of people behind him: Eremites, treasure hoarders, and your lecturer.
“Mister Ismat?” You whispered, looking over at him in horror. “What’s going on? Where are the other students?!” You exclaimed.
“I apologize, [Y/N]. But this needs to be done.” Your lecturer says, walking up to you and Na’im.
“What needs to be done? A human sacrifice!?” You exclaimed in disbelief.
Mister Ismat smiles at you. “You truly are the brightest out of all your classmates. I can see why Na’im has nominated you to be the special offering to King Deshret.” Mister Ismat says.
“You still didn’t answer my question, Mister Ismat. Where are the other students?!” You demanded, thrashing around in the rope that restricted your movements.
Mister Ismat lets out a scoff. “How selfless of you! Worrying about your classmates when you’re going to be a sacrifice soon.” Mister Ismat chuckles.
“To catch you up to speed, [Y/N]. Mister Ismat is the head of the organization I told you about.” Na’im says. “In fact, there are a lot of sages that are part of the secret organization.” He smiles triumphantly.
“Am I the sacrifice because I refused to join your little organization that is dedicated to King Deshret?” You whispered.
Na’im lets out a boisterous laugh. “No, no! That’s preposterous!” Na’im wheezes, wiping an imaginary tear drop from the corner of his eyes. “As much as I would love to explain why you’re the sacrifice, we’re on a time crunch,” Na’im says.
Na’im looks over to the tall and muscular Eremites and gestures for them to grab you. The tall blond Eremite stalked over to where you were sitting and grabbed you by your biceps, yanking you up from the ground. You stumbled and hissed when your arm was bent at an odd angle.
“Walk.” The blond Eremite orders. You rolled your eyes and walked to where the blond Eremite instructed you to walk. You wanted to put up a fight, but you couldn’t. How could you? Your arms are tied, you’re outnumbered, and your mind is foggy.
The blond Eremite kicks your back; you stumbled and fall to your knees, your hands still bound to your back. Na’im walks up to you with a sacrificial knife in his hand. This was not how you expected your first quarter at the Akademiya to go. Na’im grabbed you by your hair and held the blade up to your neck.
“This is an honorable sacrifice for the Scarlet King. Once the pure blood of a virgin has been spilled on the grounds of King Deshret, the King shall finally rise.” Na’im announces.
You blinked at Na’im and cleared your throat awkwardly. Pure blood of a virgin? Riiiiiiiiight. Who’s going to tell Na’im that your blood isn’t pure and that you’re not even a virgin? Whoever came up with this ritual for King Deshret should be fired. You feel the cold blade press up against your neck and immediately freeze.
Na’im knelt down beside you. “Don’t take this the wrong way. No hard feelings.” He gives you a cold smile.
“Yeah, no hard feelings.” You give him a fake smile before headbutting him in the lips, causing him to stumble back as blood sprays from his nose. You got up from the sand and tried to make a run for it. The exit was blocked off by treasure hoarders and Eremites with weapons in their hands, ready to attack.
“Oh, I am fucked.” You think to yourself.
You braced yourself and continued to run toward the exit, attempting to dodge every hit that was thrown your way. Your only defense was to headbutt every person that came at you. Needless to say, it was one of the fastest ways to get a headache. You kicked, headbutted, and dodged with all your might until you were cut across the torso by the Eremite Daythunder. Your knees buckled beneath you as you stumbled and landed on the sand. You hissed and doubled over in pain, blood blooming through your Akademiya uniform, drenching them in blood.
“You sure put up a lot of fight right there.” Na’im chuckles, walking up to you. “You put up a lot of fight for nothing. It’s too bad that you’re going to be nothing but a sacrificial lamb soon.” Na’im signals the Eremite to drag you back to where you were previously kneeling.
You were too exhausted to fight back. You couldn’t tell whether it was the loss of blood that was making you tired or if it was from headbutting a lot of people and breathing in the strange scent that flooded the platform you and your classmates were previously in. Na’im ended up putting a bag over your head; your body slumped against the statue, and blood continued to spill from the wound across your torso.
“There’s no need to do the ritual when my blood has already been spilled.” You muttered. “What’s the point of doing it when it’s been done already?” You whispered.
Na’im laughs. “Oh, [Y/N]. Did you forget about the part about sacrificing? Your blood has been spilled, yes, but you’re still alive.” Na’im commented, twirling the knife in his hands. “Hold them still for me.” Na’im hollers.
Na’im stood over you with the blade aiming for your chest. Na’im raises his hand in the air, ready to plunge the sacrificial knife into your chest, when he hears a whizz in the air. Na’im pauses for a moment, and before he knows it, an arrow is sticking out of his back. Na’im lets out a scream and turns around; he sees a group of men standing a few feet from where he, your lecturer, the treasure hoarders, and the Eremites stand.
“Normally, I don’t kill humans, but I’ll make an exception,” Xiao growls, swiping his hand across his face, his mask materializing on his face.
“You shouldn’t have put your hands on them in the first place,” Gorou growls.
The blond Eremite releases you; you crumple to the ground in the pool of your blood, going in and out of consciousness. The sound of chaos in the background was nothing but background noise to you. Your ears were ringing; you could barely see anything with the bag over your head, and your arms were still bound together behind your back.
The bag was soon ripped from over your head, and you saw someone towering over you. It was a blond male, someone you’re not familiar with. You saw his lips move, but you didn’t hear a single sound coming from him. He lifts you up and carries you somewhere. Your head falls on his shoulders, eyes rolling to the back of your head. The man pats your cheeks.
“Don’t close your eyes now. You need to stay awake.” The man says. “Can you do that for me? Just keep your eyes open until Baizhu and Tighnari is able to treat your wounds temporarily.”
“I’ll try.” You whisper.
The blond man smiled. “Good.”
Your face was buried into the crook of the blond man’s neck, trying to desperately keep your eyes open no matter how heavy your eyelids felt. The sound of screaming and weapons clashing soon came to a stop.
“Kaveh, how are you able to track down their location so easily?” Cyno asks, running up to the blond man.
Kaveh sighs. “I overheard Na’im and Mister Ismat’s conversation a few days ago about this trip. Apparently, it was planned from the very beginning.” Kaveh hands you over to Tighnari and Baizhu, who begin to treat your wounds immediately.
“Thank you for informing us about [Y/N]’s whereabouts. I will be informing the Akademiya about Na’im and Mister Ismat’s involvement with the Eremites and their attempts to sacrifice an Akademiya student.” Al Haitham says, giving Kaveh a thankful nod.
“Hey, are you okay?” Aether pokes you lightly.
You cracked your eyes opened and blinked up at Aether. “I’m in pain, but I should be okay.” You mumbled, nestling up in Tighnari’s arms. You scrunched your face before saying, “I’m never going on any field trips ever again.”
“Let’s get you home,” Tighnari says softly, pressing a kiss on your head.
You hum softly and nod your head. “Yes, let's go home.” You murmured.
Note: Not sure how I feel about this story 🥲 I think I like it! It's... different from my other stories... kind of. Not really. This is the latest I've updated for an Isekai'd!reader fic since I do have school, I have stories to write for school, and I have a lot of homework that I need to turn in before its due date (which is usually the day after I receive that assignment). I LOVE your meta on how essek was the perfect asset and want to ask the follow-up question in your tags: how do you think it went down? The agreement between Essek and the Assembly? And I think the fandom was convinced Essek would be disposed of after the peace talks — how do you see his future if there was no intervention by the Mighty Nein in 97?
ruvi-muffin asked:
What are your specific thoughts abt how ludinus recruited essek??👀👀 oh Person who knows a surprising amount of spy stuff 🙏🙏🙏👀👀👀
Anonymous asked:
PLEASE share your specific thoughts about how Essek was recruited, I'm so intrigued!
Anonymous asked:
Hello yes i am very interested in these very specific thoughts about how Essek got recruited? All these things about how actual intelligence works/uses their assets/how that ties to Essek and the M9 is really interesting :D
Thank you all so much for asking me the specific question I wanted someone to ask. I had to write and rewrite this post a half-dozen times because I kept going off on tangents about other Cold War spy stories so trust me there’s plenty more where this came from.
For reference, my original post on what made Essek an ideal recruitment target and why the M9 were the ideal counter to it.
First off, this is all based on real-world intelligence ops and is only as relevant to the campaign as Matt Mercer cares to make it. Having said that *slams notebook on table* BUCKLE UP, KIDDOS.
There are two ways Essek may have been recruited: he approached the Assembly or the Assembly approached him. I think the Assembly approached him. Not to be too hard on the guy, but Essek said it himself: he’s kind of a coward. I can’t see him mustering up the nerve to take that first step. Plus his espionage seems to have focused specifically on the beacons rather than dunamancy as a whole; that sounds like the Assembly to me. The beacons specifically offer the prospect of immortality and the Cerberus mages are arrogant enough to assume they can figure out dunamancy themselves if they have a beacon in hand. There’s no way the Assembly haven’t been trying to beg, borrow, or steal those beacons for centuries. Essek may not have even been their first try - just the first that worked.
Chronologically, Essek would have popped up on either the Assembly or the Augen Trust’s radar quite early as I assume they keep tabs on all powerful Dynasty mages. As they followed his career, the Assembly would have ID’d Essek as a perfect target for recruitment as a spy, and then further for ego-based recruitment. Recruitment for espionage is a slow process - even slower in a fantasy world where some races reasonably expect to live 500+ years. Many intelligence agencies will do a sort of light meet-and-greet just to start a file on various people who might years later be of interest. The Assembly would have cultivated Essek as an intelligence asset with the same degree of time and care - and using some of the same methods - that Trent used to turn the Blumenthal trio into assassins.
If they followed a modern playbook, they would have made contact with Essek anywhere from 2 to 10 years before the theft - nothing underhanded. A Cerberus mage approaches him at a negotiation or conference and strikes up a conversation. Then it’s increasing “chance” encounters to get Essek familiar with the handler, play the “we’re both mages, really we’re on the same side” angle to earn enough sympathy & trust to start talking regularly. Once the channel’s open, the handler and asset meet and/or talk routinely while the handler assesses the target’s motives, weaknesses, and the possibility that they’re a double agent.
Espionage proper then starts with small favors, acts Essek can rationalize as victimless or even helpful to the Dynasty. In this stage the handler is getting the asset comfortable with engaging in espionage. They reward the asset for what feels like minimal moral trespass. For Essek that would have been praising his research, encouraging avenues of investigation they knew the Dynasty had shut down. Having meetings with Ludinus plays right into the ego trip - the Head of the Assembly himself is taking the time to meet with him! The Assembly gets how important this work is! That keeps Essek isolated from Dynasty members who might convince him to take a step back and builds loyalty to the Assembly over the Dynasty.
Once an asset settles in, espionage becomes easier. Routines get established. Moral hurdles have been overcome. Now the asks get bigger and the rewards get sparser. The handler will suggest larger acts just to get the asset thinking about them, since the more they consider “just hypothetically” how to pull it off, the more likely it is they’ll do it. This is where the idea of stealing the beacons would get introduced (though of course it’s been the goal all along.) I’ll bet the Assembly hinted at all the study that could be done if they could just get to the beacons in person, constantly bemoaning the lack of access. By now Essek sees the Assembly as colleagues in arcane pursuits, kindred minds, unlike the boring, stuffy old mages of the Dynasty. Of course he could outwit the Dynasty’s security and get the beacons to the Assembly - he’s a prodigy, a genius, everyone says so. And it’s not like he was stealing all of them. The consecuted would be fine. Everyone would be fine.
None of this is intended to absolve Essek of personal responsibility. But it provides a context for his actions, and for why he might regret them so much even though he apparently did them willingly. Asset handlers are very, very good at drawing someone willing to commit minor transgressions into far greater crimes. Look at how Trent shaped Caleb, Astrid, and Eadwulf. He didn’t order them to execute their own parents on day one. He spent years coaxing, tempting, and coercing them into darker and darker crimes, letting them rationalize their own actions at each step, preying on the same vulnerabilities as Essek: isolation (separating the three from other students, telling them their work was secret), ambition (the promise of great arcane power, of shaping the Empire’s destiny), and ego (”we were going to keep the empire safe,” telling them they were gifted, they were chosen).
So how do IRL spies rationalize their actions? Those who spy for reasons of conscience or ideology have done the rationalizing ahead of time, but everyone else has to get there somehow. Some who spy for revenge tell themselves it’s what their superiors deserve, while others tell themselves everyone’s doing it. Some just need a lie to get started (most commonly about who they’re spying for), while others have to keep up the charade all along. Let’s look at a few cases similar to Essek’s that demonstrate just how slippery the slope can be.
Aldrich Ames, a long-term CIA officer slash double agent for the KGB, got suckered in by thinking he could control the situation and wasn’t really hurting anyone. Ames had chronic financial trouble related to excessive drinking & his wife’s lavish lifestyle and in 1985 came up with a plan: he would essentially con the KGB by selling them a minor amount of classified info that he deemed “virtually worthless.” In April he set up the exchange and the KGB paid him $50,000, enough to satisfy his immediate debts. But after actually doing it Ames said he felt he’d now crossed a line he couldn’t step back from, and continued to sell information to the Soviets. By the time he was caught he had, by his own admission, compromised “virtually all Soviet agents of the CIA.”
While some assets just need a lie to get started, others require a delicate dance of self-delusion. Col. George Trofimoff was an Army officer who ran the center where would-be Soviet defectors were assessed & questioned. Trofimoff, a Russian émigré at a young age, was chronically in debt. In 1969 he renewed his acquaintance with his stepbrother back in Russia, now a bishop in the Russian Orthodox Church, and began to pass secrets in return for money - but he and his stepbrother never framed the transactions as such. Trofimoff described their meetings as, “very informal. ... First, it was just a conversation between the two of us. He would ask my opinion on this and that--then, he would maybe ask me, 'Well, what does your unit think about it?' Or, 'What does the American government think about it?’” His compensation was similarly informal: “I said I needed money. ... And he says, 'I tell you what, I'll loan it to you.' So he gave me, I think, 5,000 marks and then, it wasn't enough, because I needed more. ... Then he says, 'Well, you know, I'll tell you what. You don't owe me any money. And if you need some more, I can give you some more. Don't worry about it. You're going to have to have a few things, this and that.' And this is how it started.” Trofimoff could pretend to himself that he wasn’t really spying - just having a chat with his stepbrother - and wasn’t really getting paid for it - just borrowing a little money.
This got longer than I intended it to be and there’s still plenty to talk about, so I’ll save the rest for a second post. Next time: what happens long-term to espionage assets? And what happens if an asset regrets their actions and/or attempts to cut off contact with their handlers?
(This accidentally turned into a series on Essek & IRL espionage: Parts 1, 2, 3, 4)

Summary: Sakusa Kiyoomi's heart has always pointed north. He wonders if it's broken when it starts to point inexorably towards her.
Set in the aftermath of The Astrophile, in the same universe as Storm Chaser.
Pairing: Sakusa Kiyoomi / f! reader
Genre: Fluff, angst, romance
Wordcount: 7.8k
Masterlist link here
A/N: Dedicated first and foremost to Ami @softsakusa, one of the first people to convince that my writing isn’t shit and that I should keep creating fics.
This fic is also for all the readers who wanted a happy ending for the reader in The Astrophile (which sets out the backstory of the reader, Iwaizumi and Oikawa), and also follows the events of Storm Chaser (which follows the turbulent relationship of Miya Atsumu and now wife - I named her Kaiyo in this fic to avoid confusion!).
Hope you like it - reblogs and comments are always dearly appreciated <3
Tumblr media
It must be the worst meet cute of all time.
That is – if he’s using that phrase correctly. It keeps appearing in the god-awful English movies Bokuto and Miya keep playing during team movie nights that makes him want to tear his hair out.
But yes, he meets her at Miya Shino’s seventh birthday party, the birthday girl the apple of Miya Atsumu’s eye, the princess of his castle, the most perfect angel in the entire heavens - the list of pet names growing longer and longer the more the obnoxious setter prattles on about his daughter.
And apparently Miya Shino is a chip off the old block, and is as obsessed with volleyball as her father. Which means that he, one Sakusa Kiyoomi, is forced to turn up on a Saturday afternoon for a birthday party to teach a group of children roughly about the same height as his kneecaps how to play volleyball.
There are plenty of other MSBY players that Miya Atsumu could have rounded up to fritter away a Saturday afternoon. Hinata, for instance - the sunny, fiery headed opposite hitter a perennial favourite with young fans. Or Inunaki - the liberio has an amiable personality that he certainly wouldn’t mind snot nosed children hanging off his arms like a walking, talking monkey bar. But no, Hinata is apparently busy on a weekend meditation retreat, and Inunaki is at his sister’s wedding party, so both of them managed to escape this travesty of a birthday party.
That leaves him with Bokuto who’s practically a child himself, beaming, bumping balls at screaming children with one hand, the other hand lifting another child above his head. Meian’s here too but his own kid is somewhere in this gaggle of monsters anyway, so he’s here to carry out his parental duties – hopefully his presence might balance the sheer chaos he’s sure he’s about to face.
‘Omi-omi you made it!’ Atsumu greets him with a slap to the back.
Sakusa resists the urge to bare his teeth. Is this what hell is? Screeching gremlins underfoot, the nauseating smell of fried food permeating the air.
And it’s probably because he’s still in a horrified daze at the situation he’s put himself in (which Atsumu is either too dense to pick up on or already immune due to the series of similar expressions he pulls at him on a daily basis), Atsumu manages to snap a party hat on his head, before he prances off in victory.
Sakusa snarls, ripping off the red paper hat off his head.
Why on earth did he agree to this again?
‘Sakusa-san! Thank you so much for coming!’
His glare softens by a fraction.
Miya Kaiyo, Atsumu’s long suffering wife approaches him, careful not to touch him, waving at him instead. He appreciates her thoughtfulness, so he thaws a little, giving her a slight nod in greeting.
Right, she’s the reason why he’s here.
He’s always been fond of her - competent, patient, intelligent, far too good for her idiot of a husband. Approximately a year ago, he sought her professional help with his accounts. He graduated with a business degree from Chuo University, so he can tell there is obviously something fishy that his manager is pulling with his finances, but the accounting courses he took weren’t in depth to pinpoint the problem. Miya Kaiyo, on the other hand, a trained forensic accountant with a nose like a bloodhound for fraudulent accounts, nailed down the problem within a week. So when she asked him after a game whether he’d be free to attend her daughter's birthday party, he hadn’t been able to turn her down.
‘It was no problem’, he says stiffly, already itching to spray the whole place down with disinfectant. ‘I’m glad to be here.’
Kaiyo laughs at his obvious lie, tugging at his sleeve to seat him in a corner. ‘You don’t have to go play with the kids if you didn’t want to! I invited you so we could catch up, and besides, I did want to introduce you to someone.’
‘Hm.’
He doesn’t try to mask his reluctance this time. Kaiyo means well, he knows, but between her and his mother, he’s tired of having to fend off match making attempts. It’s not like he can’t get a date – he can and he has, it’s just difficult to find someone willing to put up with his prickly personality and busy schedule.
‘Well she’s not here yet, so you’ll have to wait. And while we’re waiting, tell me how’ve things been, Sakusa-san?’
Grateful that he’s not going to be forced into shepherding children into playing anything remotely resembling an actual volleyball match (he suspects he might have more luck teaching cats how to do the conga), he settles into his seat, mouth stretching into something resembling a smile. He lets her chatter about work, and they’re deep in a discussion about his plans post-volleyball (because he can feel the countdown on his career in his creaking bones, his aching sinews)  when Atsumu swoops in on him again, like a vulture seeking easy prey.
‘What’cha doin’ with my wife, Omi-omi’, he slips a hand around Kaiyo’s waist mock possessively.
She swats at him. He ducks, raising his hands in surrender.
‘I enjoy talking to an actual adult sometimes, ‘Tsumu!’
‘Oh come on, I already have to share you with ‘Samu most of the time, now you’re leaving me for Omi-kun?!’
‘Dramatic ass.’
‘Please, you chose to marry me.’ He crows, flipping his hair. He looks ridiculous, he always does. Kaiyo seems to agree -
‘And I wonder why sometimes.’ She retorts, Atsumu squawking indignantly at her response, hair ruffling like an offended chick. But Kaiyo ruins the effect of her words by laughing, leaning over to affectionately peck her husband on the cheek.
Sakusa should be annoyed by this display of childishness, but for some inexplicable reason, a frisson of longing bubbles in his chest instead. It’s strange. Marriage or even serious relationships have never been something he’s actively sought. After all, it always seemed horrendously illogical to put all your eggs in one basket and hope nothing trips up – but his heart pays his mind no mind, and the strange sensation continues to trickle down his throat into his chest.
He makes up an excuse to slip to the bathroom for a tactical retreat from this madness.
Then he takes a breath.
Rinse. Lather hands with soap. Rinse. Repeat again .
Familiar motions, bred out of a desire to do things right, transformed into an unbreakable habit. Cold water, washing away soap bubbles.
Right. Now he’s ready for another plunge off the deep end .
He’s a foot past the threshold of the community hall where the party is being held when Miya Shino darts towards him. She’s very clearly her father’s daughter with his penchant for mischief because she dives between his legs, making him stumble in confusion. Then Meian Shugo’s eldest son Makoto barrels towards him, intent on reaching the ball held aloft in Shino’s hands.
Athletic reflexes be damned in the face of a pair of hell-spawn.
‘Shino!’. Kaiyo shouts.
‘Makoto!’ Meian thunders.
Sakusa flails, decidedly without grace, and in his attempt at not squashing the two little devils, he manages to do something even  worse .
Much, much worse.
He manages to trip over his feet and bump right into the woman Miya Kaiyo wanted to introduce him to (this, he finds out later). It’s a lost cause – he’s six foot two of pure muscle, dwarfing her by a mile, and she’s carrying a huge box in her hand.
He ends up face planting directly into her chest.
His brain short circuits at the feeling of plush softness and vanilla and – ,
‘Woah - Omi-omi, never thought I’d have to defend the honour of my cousin in law’, Atsumu laughs.
The sudden flare of irritation at Atsumu’s words kickstarts his brain back into gear. Rearing back in alarm, he promptly topples over onto his butt.
‘Uncle ‘kusa, I’m sorry’ Shino screeches, distraught. Makoto merely snivels. Kaiyo is evidently the only one with working brain cells, because she rushes over to help them up.
The-woman-with-the-mysterious-box makes Kaiyo take the box first. It holds precious cargo - Shino’s birthday cake, he later finds out, but because she manages to cling on to it with admirable tenacity, it emerges more or less intact. Then she turns to him, still sprawled on the floor. He scoots away, still dazed.
She offers him a steady hand. ‘Hello’, she says. ‘It seems we’ve gotten off to rather a bad start.’
There is a hint of mirth in her voice, but her eyes are kind.
He takes her hand with a rare smile.
Miya Kaiyo grins behind the cake box. It turns out her daughter is a better matchmaker than either her or (heaven forbid) her husband.
Tumblr media
It turns out that Miya Kaiyo wanted to introduce him to her cousin, newly moved to Osaka from Tokyo. She’s a sports journalist, used to cover volleyball even, but for some reason their paths never crossed. She too, is tired of her cousin’s well intentioned meddling, but asks him if he’d like to meet her for dinner one day ‘if only to get Kaiyo off her back, because she’s persistent’, and funnily enough, he agrees.
He doesn’t mind making a new friend, he reasons. She seems decent enough.
They go out for dinner on a Tuesday night. She doesn’t complain when he tells her that due to his diet planned by MSBY’s nutritionist, most restaurants are off limits. Instead, she asks intelligent questions about whether the sources of protein and fibre he’s relying on are varied enough, even suggesting alternatives like tempeh, a Southeast Asian soy product.
He appreciates that.
She doesn’t also fawn over the fact that he’s a professional athlete. That makes sense, considering she’s probably interviewed dozens, if not hundreds of individuals who are just like him. It’s nice - he’s tired of groupies who start dates off by staring at him starry eyed, but ending it with disappointment in their eyes when they discover that he’s just a guy who practices hitting balls enough to do it for a living. And best of all, she doesn’t mind that their conversation sometimes wanes into silence. She doesn’t seem to feel the need to fill empty spaces with inane drivel, nor expect him to entertain her like a circus animal.
He likes that.
So when the night ends, he asks her whether she’d like to have dinner with him again. ‘Just as friends’, he’s quick to clarify.
‘Sure’, she nods, and they bid each other goodnight.
Tumblr media
They start having dinner every Tuesday night, subject to their erratic schedules.
He enjoys her company. She’s thoughtful, bringing him home made baked goods like zucchini cake (low sugar, of course), sneaking him chocolate scones for his cheat days after she discovers his hidden sweet tooth. She’s considerate too, never blinking an eye at his compulsive need to make sure everything is just in order, even if the waitress stands behind them aghast when he insists on using disinfectant to wipe down their table. She doesn’t even call him paranoid when he passes her a bottle of sanitizer.
Slowly, he finds himself confiding in her about things he’d maybe only tell his cousin, Motoya. Or at least, the things he would tell Motoya if the guy would only pick up his calls.
‘Sorry’, Motoya texts back after a couple of missed calls. ‘ Practice has been brutal recently.
In a remarkable display of restraint, Sakusa does not point out that EJP Raijin is below MSBY in this season’s rankings.
So he tells her instead about how he’s contemplating retirement, how he’s trying to chart out his next steps career wise. She surprises him by listening to him gravely, pointing out that he can lean on his business degree to possibly land an office job in event management or with sports associations, putting him in touch with one overly excited Kuroo Tetsuro. He tucks her suggestions away carefully at the back of his mind.
It’s nice to have a friend, he tells himself, his lips quirking ever so slightly when her hand grazes his as they walk down the street together.
Tumblr media
He invites her to the monthly gatherings that the MSBY players take turns to host for their family and friends, making the excuse that he needs a human shield in any event hosted by Miya Atsumu. She agrees easily, perking up at the chance to spend a Sunday afternoon with her cousin and niece - ‘ and Kaiyo’ll need help, especially since she’s pregnant’, bringing far too many cupcakes topped with the lightest, fluffiest cream cheese frosting he’s ever had the pleasure of tasting. Even Miya Osamu gives her a nod of respect after stuffing his face full of her cupcakes.  He, unlike his twin, has good taste.
Her brow furls into a concerned frown when he quietly sneaks himself a second cupcake. ‘You don’t have to force yourself to eat it just to be polite! I made it, so  I  know it has so much sugar and butter it would make your nutritionist weep. If you want, I snuck some zucchini cake in my handbag for you instead.’
He stubbornly shovels a large bite into his mouth. ‘I won’t tell if you don’t.’
She bursts into laughter, leaning forward to wipe away the smudge of frosting on the tip of his nose with her thumb.
Miya Kaiyo shoots him a knowing look across the room, waggling her eyebrows in an eerie imitation of her husband. He fights to keep his face blank, refusing to feed her satisfaction, but fails, a hot flush rising in his cheeks.
‘Traitor’ he mouths at her. Her smirk only deepens.
Fortunately, the gathering ends with no further mishaps, either to his physical well-being or his dignity. Makoto is packed off with Meian, the little boy whining for more time to play with Shino. Hinata and Bokuto prance off for some ridiculous buffet on the other side of town.
As for himself, he hangs back with her to help the Miyas put their house back in order, expelling an amused puff of a laugh from his nose when she forces the very pregnant Kaiyo to ‘stay still, for goodness sake!’  on the couch, dancing around the house with a mop, Shino trailing after her waving a feather duster with gusto. He refrains from telling the little girl that she’s more likely to spread  the dust than to actually clear it – at least she’s not causing more havoc this way.
‘I can’t believe I could’ve ever taken this for granted, y’know’, Atsumu comments from behind him, mouth wide in a tender smile. ‘It’s the best feeling in the world to have a wife and kid who loves ya to the moon and back, welcoming ya home after a long day at work. They make everything worth it.’
He’s thrown for a loop at this rare display of emotional vulnerability from the usually obnoxious setter and for once, does not resort to hostility, choosing instead to acknowledge the blonde setter’s words with a tacticum nod.
The Miyas’ apartment is far too chaotic for his tastes, with colourful toys scattered on the floor, mismatched picture frames of the little family on the walls, but laughter hangs in the air, and light spills from the windows, illuminating the warmth and love and fondness in every look and word the Miyas gift each other.
His father gave him a compass when he was a child, as a present to celebrate his first match. His mother clucked her tongue because it’s a strange gift for a child - delicate, fiddly, its gold exterior tarnished with age. But his father chuckled and told him that he’s old enough to appreciate that the compass is his father’s, and his father’s father before that, an heirloom to remind their sons to work hard at everything they do, and to keep their hearts on course, pointing north.
And Sakusa thinks he’s done that. He’s worked and worked and worked at perfecting his skills in his chosen sport. He’s accepted his solo course, so laser focused on carving out a career in professional sports leaves little time or space for intimate relationships. Not to mention the fact that watching the disaster of Atsumu’s early years of marriage from the sidelines, made him swear off similar heartbreak for himself.
But there are times when he can’t help but feel a little lonely - when he has to struggle to find a date for MSBY events, when he has no one to celebrate the holidays with, when he goes home every day to his neat, cold apartment with space for only one occupant.
The compass in his heart creaks. It starts to turn a few degrees just off-course.
Tumblr media
‘Do you ever wonder what it’d be like to get married?’ he asks her as he’s walking her home that night.
‘I did, once upon a time’, she shrugs carelessly. He misses the sudden strain in her smile. ‘Why do you ask?’
He stays silent for a while, the length of the quiet street giving him time to properly ferment his response. He considers the effects of adding splashes of colour to his dull life, weighs it against his long cultivated instinct to avoid the potential chaos of any emotional entanglements. He finds himself suddenly craving the sweetness of cream cheese frosting, and wonders how it’d be like to come home to light, fluffy cakes baked by her hands.
When they reach her apartment block, she tilts her head at him curiously, obviously awaiting his answer. He tugs his words together, strings his swirling thoughts into a decipherable sentence.
‘Because Atsumu and Kaiyo seem happy together. And I wondered if we’d be happy together too.’
He watches her puzzle over his words, her brow furling into a confused frown. ‘And I wasn’t proposing, by the way’, he feels the need to clarify.
She snorts. ‘I didn’t think so.’ With a directness that he very much appreciates, she looks at him squarely and asks - ‘Are you asking me out, Sakusa Kiyoomi?’
He meets her gaze. ‘Yes, I am. We’ve known each other for a decently long time for me to conclude our personalities are well matched, and we’re both mature adults who respect each other’s work schedules and commitments. And if you don’t mind that I can be overly blunt and quiet sometimes - ‘
‘ - which I don’t’, she interjects, with a chuckle.
‘I think we might be happy together’, he concludes, with a small smile that’s becoming more common in her presence.
He allows her the space to turn his proposition over in her mind.
‘Alright’, she finally says. ‘I guess we can give it a go’.
So much for Atsumu accusing him of having a heart made out of tin. Flesh and muscle works overtime to pump blood into his cheeks as she slots her fingers between his and gives his hand a squeeze.
Tumblr media
Being in a relationship isn’t too different from what they had before.
They still keep to their standing date to meet every Tuesday (schedules permitting, of course). But now he doesn’t have to make up excuses to ask her out on outings that aren’t food related. At first he tries his best to adhere to dating norms, arranging for romantic dates at candlelit restaurants, buying her massive bouquets that make her sneeze.
‘It’s fine, Omi’, she tells him gently after they spend another uncomfortable evening in a dimly lit restaurant eating off plates too large for the laughably tiny food portions. ‘I’m happy just hanging out with you. You don’t have to go out of your way to impress me, I’m not holding on to any ridiculous expectations of you’. He stops after that, glad he doesn’t have to suffer another night trying to decipher which utensil to be used at which course, or having to put on starched formal wear to yet another stuffy restaurant.
She’s noticeably happier when they accompany each other on trips to the supermarket, each holding a stack of coupons to take advantage of the latest deals. She shields him from any overly zealous obaa-sans with gusto, throwing elbows and using her grocery basket as a makeshift battering ram before they crowd close enough to him to trigger his anxiety. He helps her reach for things on the top shelf ‘to prevent her from scaling the grocery shelves like an overgrown teenager’ , he snarks. He’s worried his attempt at teasing lands wrong, but she snorts and thanks him good naturedly anyways.
On the weekends, they develop a habit of meal prepping for the rest of the week at her apartment. His kitchen lacks the fancy mixers and blenders that she has, and in all honesty, his dark, spartan apartment lacks the sunlight and warmth that spills into her apartment from the windows, so it’s only logical that they should spend the bulk of their time there. It’s an oasis of calm for him, chopping vegetables and chicken into small cubes, sautéing them for the week ahead, while she bustles around whipping eggs and flour and milk together to form another delectable cake that they always end up sharing at the end of the day.
He starts to dread matches away from home a little more than he used to. While hotel rooms are as spartan as his own apartment, he doesn’t have the option of heading over to her apartment to bask in her quiet warmth. His meals come in styrofoam boxes instead of the glass tupperware she stacks on her kitchen counter, and he turns up his nose at store bought cakes that his teammates offer him, only craving for those baked in her oven. He even starts looking up to the stands for a glimpse of her, only to remember that she can’t be there to cheer the team on.
‘Cheer up, Omi-omi! We’ll have a home match next week’, Atsumu tells him jovially.
‘It doesn’t matter either way to me’, he mutters resentfully, but the setter only grins.
‘Trust me, it matters a great deal to have the girl ya love cheering ya on, y’know?’
He stalks off to the changing room, ignoring the peals of laughter from the blonde annoyance he leaves in his wake.
The tight coil of loneliness only loosens when he sees her waiting for him at the station when he returns. She ignores his protests to snag his suitcase away from him, the case looking comically large against her small frame, but she uses it effectively as a tank to force a path through the crowd, and drag him back to her apartment in no time.
‘You need a home cooked dinner to make up for all those industrially prepared food you must’ve been eating this entire week’, she tells him, bustling around the kitchen, only stilling when he takes her shoulders in his hands.
‘Are you happy?’ he asks, when he cups her face to carefully brush the dusting of flour on her cheek away.
‘Why wouldn’t I be?’ She laughs, the sound fond.
‘Just checking in’, he tells her, closing his eyes as she pulls him down towards her for a kiss.
All in all, it’s a happy, uncomplicated relationship. He likes it that way.
If his heart were a compass, he’d suspect it’s broken because instead of pointing north, it starts to inch inexorably towards her.
Tumblr media
But there are strange quirks he notices about her that niggles at his brain.
She refuses point blank to check out the planetarium when she attends an event held at the adjacent Art Museum as his date, professing to have an irrational dislike for stars.
‘They’re just balls of burning gas and light ’ , he points out. ‘What could you possibly have against them?’
There’s a flicker of irritation in her eyes that he does not miss. ‘I know it’s stupid but just humour me, ok?’ Her tone verges on a snarl, before she storms away, ostensibly to the bathroom to freshen herself up.
She returns later with an apology for her behaviour. Though he’s confused, he respects her privacy and does not push for an answer.
Tumblr media
He’s at her apartment preparing meals for the week ahead when the doorbell rings and an enormous bouquet of white lilies are deposited into her arms. She stares dumbly at the flowers, their sickly sweet scent permeating the air.
His brow furls. ‘Today isn’t your birthday, is it?’
His words jolt her out of her trance. ‘No’, she answers, before inexplicably storming to the living room and dumping the bouquet with a vengeance on the coffee table. Pollen flutters to the floor, delicate white petals crushed in her hands.
‘It’s nothing’, she tells him as he shoots her a questioning look.
When she disappears to the washroom, he peeks at the card. There’s no name on it, just a simple message - ‘consider it, please?’
He doesn’t question her about it when she returns to the kitchen. She doesn’t offer him any answers either.
Tumblr media
He finds himself wondering about them.
It was refreshing at first to have a relationship free of any expectations. She never asks for more than he’s willing to give, seems happy enough to slot herself into the pockets of time he offers, only attends his games when he gives her tickets, doesn’t get upset with him when he inevitably forgets to text.
But therein lies the issue, doesn’t it?
If she truly likes him, wants to pursue a relationship seriously with him, shouldn’t she be demanding more than the crumbs of affection and attention he shows her? They’re both past the age of thirty, shouldn’t she be looking to get married and settle down, maybe spawn a demon child or two?
He’s tried raising it with her once, but she responded with confusion.
‘I don’t have any expectations of you, Omi’, she’d replied. ‘We both have busy lives, so whatever you’re willing to give, I’m happy to take’.
There’s technically nothing wrong about her answer. It’s wholly considerate and kind - very much her.
Still, it makes him wonder - if her heart were a compass, would it point towards him?
Tumblr media
He manages to hold his tongue until she gets another delivery of flowers.
This time he opens the door when the doorbell rings, assaulted by the heady scent of lillies, pollen smeared on his sleeves. This time, there’s a name on the card.
Oikawa Tooru .
It takes a couple of seconds for him to realise why the name is so familiar. It’s the same name Hinata and Kageyama used to buzz about every Olympics - the famous Argentinian setter who started his career as a schoolboy from Miyagi, a prodigious setter who never made it to Nationals in high school, refused to give up and forged his way to success in a whole new land, continents away.
‘How do you know Oikawa’? He asks her. ‘And why does he keep sending your flowers?’
‘He’s just an old acquaintance,’ she admits. ‘He’s just sending the flowers to persuade me to attend his wedding.’
His forehead crinkles in confusion, and he tries his best not to leap to conclusions, but since she doesn’t seem to be forthcoming with further clarification, he presses her further.
‘And why won’t you attend his wedding?’
Her shoulders slouch in obvious reluctance as she turns away, focusing her attention on the mixing bowl. But Kiyoomi isn’t easily deterred, so he firmly takes the mixing bowl from her and sets it on the countertop. He raises an eyebrow at her, clearly seeking an answer.
She huffs a sigh through her nose. ‘Because he’s getting married to my ex-boyfriend, ok?’
He blinks. That was unexpected.
‘It happened half a decade ago. Ancient history. I’m over it.’ She mutters to the floor.
‘Why didn’t you tell me about it?’
‘Because it’s none of your business’, she snaps, grabbing the mixing bowl again, beating the batter with a vengeance.
‘You’re going to ruin the texture if you whisk it too hard’, he tugs the bowl away from her again. She refuses to relinquish her grip.
‘Leave me alone!’ she snarls, yanking the bowl back. Confused by her sudden fury, he lets go of the bowl, only for her to stumble back, eyes wide as she loses her balance, knocking her head against the countertop.
He drops down onto his knees, not even noticing the batter soaking into his pants, combing through her hair, scouring the back of her neck for any sign of injury. It’s only when he’s satisfied that her fall has resulted in nothing more than a bruise that should go away by tomorrow that he notices her tears soaking the front of his shirt.
‘Do you want to tell me what’s wrong?’ he asks, wiping her tears away with a batter splattered thumb.
She hangs her head, body still shaking from her sobs. ‘I’ve already made such a mess of things – don’t want you to have to listen to my nonsense – am just bein’ stupid, that’s all - ’.
He patiently waits until her sobs dissolves into mere sniffles before speaking. ‘I want you to tell me what’s wrong. If you’re up to it.’
So through more broken sobs and hiccups, he listens to the tale of Iwaizumi Hajime, a boy who was her world, who only realised he was always in love with Oikawa Tooru, a fortnight before she and he were to wed. Her voice wavers as she tells him the full story of the white lilies, explains that her irrational dislike for stars stems from the reminder that she chose to give her world up to a boy-king burning brighter than the stars in the night sky combined.
He waits until her words run out, and she’s leaning against him, broken and pliant in a way that makes his heart ache.
‘I wish you told me about it earlier’, he tells her, tucking the loose strands of hair behind her ear. ‘That you would trust me enough to tell me about the things that hurt you in the past. And I wonder about the state of our relationship if you don’t even trust me enough for that’.
‘That’s unfair. You never asked - ‘
‘How could I ask about something I didn’t even know about?’ He takes hold of her shoulders, forcing her to look at him. Hurt and anger and shock simmer in her eyes, each swirl of emotion fighting for dominance.
‘I didn’t want to expect anything more from this relationship than you were willing to give’, she admits after a pause.
She’s scared of being hurt again. He doesn’t miss the subtext.
‘Shall I tell you what I want from you then? I have a list, if you’re willing to hear me out’ he asks, with a smile that’s growing more common the more time he spends around her.
She nods, but keeps her gaze stubbornly on the ground.
He takes his time to choose his words. He’s never been verbose - not like Atsumu or Bokuto or even easygoing Motoya, choosing to only say what is strictly necessary, using the precise amount of words, nothing more, nothing less. But this is a situation that requires more emotion rather than precision, so he inhales a shaky breath, letting it fuel the sentiment in his heart as he exhales.
‘First. I want you to trust that I’ll never hurt you like he did’, he says, and with a self-deprecating smile he adds - ‘I don’t have any childhood friends to be secretly in love with besides Motoya, and I’m hardly going to be pining after my flake of a cousin’.
That triggers the corners of her lips to tilt upwards, and encouraged, he carries on.
‘Second. I want you to be open with me about what you want - your dreams, your expectations of me. I want to hear them all because  you’re important to me.’
That makes her flush pink, and she sneaks a glance up towards him.
‘Third. I want to wake up each morning with you by my side and come home to you every night. I want to watch you fight cranky old ladies in the supermarket in my honour, be the first person to taste test all your baking experiments - even the failed ones that are only fit to feed Atsumu. I want us to be happy together. Forever, if possible.’
He lifts her bodily into his lap, brushes his nose against her cheek. ‘Now that I’ve told you what I’m willing to give, is that too much for you to take?’ he murmurs against her lips.
Her blush blossoms into a deep scarlet, but her eyes are iridescent pools of startled delight. She doesn’t speak, sealing her answer instead with her lips.
His heart’s compass is irretrievably broken, the needle melted into place. It doesn’t point north any longer, no  – it’s always going to point towards her.
Tumblr media
They move in together after that.
He gives up his apartment, professing to prefer the warmth and light of hers. The Miyas help him move in even when he tries to refuse their help, Atsumu helping him to lug cardboard boxes up the stairs, Kaiyo helping him sort out his belongings, sorting them into his allocated cupboards.
When they’re done, they order pizza and she bakes a cake to celebrate. ‘An impromptu housewarming’ she says, toasting Miya Kaiyo with a slice of pepperoni pizza with a laugh.
Kiyoomi shares a slice of chocolate cake with Atsumu in complete defiance of their nutritionist’s advice, jostling forks over the very last bite. She and Kaiyo scold them teasingly, telling them to behave like they’re actually thirty and not teenagers on the cusp of adulthood. Atsumu pulls at Kaiyo’s ponytail in retaliation. He refuses to engage in similar tomfoolery, reddening instead when she reaches over to ruffle his curls.
‘This is nice’, he remarks to Atsumu later, when their significant others are out of earshot, gossiping and giggling about something or other.
‘It is, isn’t it’, Atsumu replies, a dopey smile on his face as he stares at his wife.
It truly is , Kiyoomi thinks, staring at her.
Tumblr media
He takes over most of the cleaning, it clears his mind, he tells her. So to split the chores evenly, she insists on doing their laundry and cooking, and he doesn’t even nag her too much when she forgets to split the white and coloured clothes and stains some of his shirts once in a while.
Wedding invites printed on expensive cream paper and bouquets of white lilies start to litter their doorstep every day. He tries his best to dispose of them before they reach her sight, but every so often, he comes home too late, catches her wilt as she brushes white petals from their doorstep.
‘I don’t blame either of them’, she tells him, after he asks if she’d like him to call Iwaizumi and tell him to drown himself in a vat of batter, thank you very much.
‘You’re too kind to both of them’ he says plainly, as they share a pot of tea, his head pillowed in her lap. ‘I would’ve just set them both on fire and left them to rot.’
‘Hajime loved Tooru for almost all his life - I just wanted to see him happy in the end. Argh  - I sound so stupid and sentimental like an old grandma, just laugh at me already’ she complains, hiding her burning cheeks in her hands.
‘You aren’t stupid for being kind.’ He hums, quiet and low. ‘It’s why I love you so.’
He relishes the soft light dawning in her eyes, captures her whispered affection with careful fingers, spins them into gold.
Tumblr media
He has to turn off the stove to answer the door when some rude lout bangs on their front door far too early on a Sunday morning.
With his coldest sneer and thinking resentfully about his breakfast, Kiyoomi swings the door open, fully intent on looming over the disturbance with his full height, but takes a step back instead when he finds one Iwaizumi Hajime hanging off the door knob.
‘Hello’, Iwaizumi looks up at him confusedly.
‘Hi’, he nods a greeting back at his old Olympic team trainer. They stare at each other.
‘Eh - I think I’ve got the wrong house’, Iwaizumi scratches the back of his neck awkwardly. ‘Sorry about that, Sakusa-san.’
He’s about to close the door in Iwaizumi’s face when her voice chimes in, clear as a bell.
‘Who’s at the door, Omi?’
The shorter man shoots him a look of barely contained rage as he uses his bulk to push his way through the doorway towards her. Kiyoomi tries to stop him, protesting that he can’t barge into someone’s private property without an invitation like that, but it’s as futile an endeavour as trying to block the path of a raging storm.
Iwaizumi reaches her first, raising a hand as if to cup her face by instinct, before letting it fall back limply by his side. ‘You weren’t answering any of my messages or calls’, he says. ‘I was worried about you.’
She stares at him blankly for a moment. Then fire sparks in her eyes.
‘Well, as you can see, I’m completely fine’, she replies, jaw and fists clenched. ‘You don’t need to do a welfare check on me, we’re not involved anymore.’
The scorching pain in Iwaizumi’s eyes is evident, even from a distance away. ‘Yeah. Well. I thought we were friends. You didn’t even tell me you were dating again’. He shoves his hands in his pockets, tossing another heated glance in Kiyoomi’s way.
‘I didn’t think I needed to update my ex-fiance about my love life, especially not when he’s trying to drag me to attend his wedding that I already said I’m not going to attend’, she bites back.
Iwaizumi opens his mouth, then closes it with a resounding snap. ‘I’m sorry’, he says, with heartbreaking honesty. ‘I told Tooru that you probably didn’t want to hear from us, but he insisted and I got worried when I didn’t hear from you for months’.
Kiyoomi can see her glare soften into molten sympathy. The tension in the air crackles with electricity. He’s neither blind nor stupid – he can sense the years of longing and love not quite lost between them.
He thinks she loves him, Sakusa Kiyoomi – weird habits, cold disposition and all, but the doubt clogging up his arteries and veins is enough to make his heart seize – and if she’s going to break his heart, he’d much rather she not do it in front of Iwaizumi.
‘Hajime - ‘ she begins to say, and at this point he jumps in -
‘I’ll excuse myself so you both have the chance to catch up’, he says, waving aside her protests as he slips on his shoes. Even in his haste to leave the house, he clicks his tongue at the mess Iwaizumi left behind at their  genkan , kneeling down to arrange their shoes, only standing up when he’s satisfied they’re neatly arranged back in place.
‘Omi, you don’t have to leave’, she says, holding the door open.
He shrugs his shoulders at her, nose and mouth already obscured by his usual face mask. ‘Let me know when you’d like me to come back’.
If she’d like him to come back. She doesn’t chase after him, after all.
It’s a beautiful Sunday morning, but the golden sunshine feels more like a taunt rather than a balm to his mood. His stomach growls, making him long for the scrambled eggs he was in the middle of frying before he was so rudely interrupted, but his growing sense of nausea keeps him from seeking out an alternative meal.
Instead, he makes his way to the park, sits on a relatively clean bench. There are couples a-plenty, strolling around hand in hand, families picnicking merrily around him, compounding the growing chasm of loneliness in his chest. He tries to count the seconds by his breaths, tries not to let the minutes expand the insecurities crawling, inch by inch up his throat.
He sits alone. Poised, yet short of breath.
He wonders if Iwaizumi Hajime has finally figured out that stars, for all their brilliance, cannot compensate for their lack of human kindness. And if so, he wonders which direction her heart would point towards if it were a compass - whether it’s as broken as his, and whether it points towards Iwaizumi or him.
He waits.
Then his phone buzzes.
Ah.
She’s asking him to come home. He does not dare to overthink the meaning of that single word. But he does not hide that his steps back  home are lighter than when he left, though the key in his hand shakes so hard it takes him three tries to fit it into the keyhole. He does not try to suffocate the seed of hope budding in the soft earth of his heart when he realises Iwaizumi’s shoes have vanished without a trace.
“Omi?”
She’s waiting for him, slipping warm arms around his waist, tangling her fingers in his curls, ignoring his complaints about letting himself wash his hands first.
‘Am I silly for missing you, even though it’s only been an hour?’
He refuses to be distracted by the affection in her voice.
‘But what about Iwaizumi?’ he frowns, hesitation still poisoning the well of thoughts in his mind.
Perhaps it’s a testament to how well they’ve grown to know each other that she doesn’t need to read the silent subtext of his statement. She smiles, bringing his palm flat against her chest, does not answer until his pulse matches the steady beat of her heart.
‘I love you , Omi’, she tells him. Her heartbeat does not quicken, her smile does not waver. ‘You told me not to long ago to always be upfront with you about what  I  want so I’m going to be honest with you now - Iwaizumi is only ever going to be my past, and I want you from now on’.
If her heart were a compass, the steady beat of her heart tells him, it would point only towards him.
‘That is – if you’ll have me’, she adds, a shadow of doubt suddenly appearing on her face.
‘Don’t be ridiculous’, he scoffs, burying his nose to breathe in the familiar scent of vanilla in her hair. ‘Who else would I rather have than you?’
Who else would he be lucky enough to call his home – a woman with a heart large enough to fit a whole ocean within its depths, with kindness in her eyes and mirth in her smiles.
She laughs in spite of the salt in her throat and water in her eyes, leaning on her toes in a vain attempt to reach his face. He lifts her into her arms, laughs when she squeals indignantly as her feet only find air, toppling them both onto the couch where he can seat her between his legs, press kisses to her cheeks.
She’ll tell him later that Iwaizumi came looking for her because he’s never outgrown his overprotective streak, and he’s truly happy for her - for them, because they’ve both moved on with their separate lives. And she ended up agreeing to attend his and Oikawa’s wedding on one condition – that an invitation is extended to him, Sakusa Kiyoomi, to attend with her as his date.
He’ll tell her later that he’s happy to attend the wedding with her, just not to expect him to smile in any wedding pictures. And more importantly, he’ll tell her in his plain way that the list of expectations he has of their relationship has expanded yet again.
He’ll lay out his dreams of a pair of matching golden rings to bind them to lifelong companionship, of hellspawn of their own and a dog, maybe two.
He’ll ask her if it’s too much for him to ask of her.
She’ll tell him that she’s willing to give him everything he asks for and more.

It’s Miya Shino’s ninth birthday party.
He’s retired from volleyball proper, and is thankful he insisted on getting a business degree from Chuo University before going pro, because it comes in handy working alongside Kuroo Tetsuro at the volleyball association.
Miya Atsumu insists on inviting him to the party, though he supposes he’s invited not by virtue of being a former teammate, but because he’s also Shino’s uncle by marriage now. The thought that he’s related to Miya Atsumu, however distant and most definitely not by blood, still fills him with dread.
The birthday girl is a little less imbued with her father’s chaotic energy this time, though she still squeals when her birthday cake is unveiled – though to be fair it’s less a cake, more a tower of cupcakes with cream cheese frosting spelling out her name.
‘Thank you Auntie!’ Shino cries, flinging her arms around her. Kiyoomi flinches at the sight of anyone, even his nine year old niece, coming in close contact with his extremely pregnant wife, but a sharp glare from her subdues any complaint he dares to make.
He fusses over her the minute he has the chance to corral her away from the clutches of Miya Shino. ‘Are your feet hurting? What about your back? I don’t know why you insist on walking so much when you know the doctor said you should be on bed rest soon’.
‘Stop fussing, Omi! The baby and I will be fine’, she replies, exasperated. ‘This is the last social event scheduled before I pop and I’m determined to enjoy it while I can.’ Then she scuttles off faster than he imagines her frame allows, leaving him floundering in her wake.
‘Just let her be’, Miya Atsumu laughs, slapping his back. Kiyoomi is on the verge of pointing out -  pot, meet kettle, reminding Atsumu that the last time Kaiyo was pregnant, Atsumu didn’t stop fretting until she went into labour and delivered a healthy baby boy. But then he remembers the grief etched into Atsumu’s face when Kaiyo miscarried in the stands during a game, so he holds his tongue and rolls his eyes instead.
‘I’m just worried she’s pushing herself too hard’, he admits in a rare bout of vulnerability.
Atsumu smiles, genuine for once. ‘Those crazy women, eh? They’re always gonna drive us up the wall, but they’re worth every minute of it.’
He looks at her, belly swollen with their first child, peach blossoms blooming in her cheeks. His past self would never imagine that he’d find this much joy and contentment in being a husband and a father, but then again his past self was satisfied coming home alone day after day to a cold apartment. He knows better now - life is so better when he has her, sharing stories of their day of over steaming mugs of tea at their kitchen countertop, listening to her hum as she bakes treats for the weekend, warmth and laughter and love abound in their cosy apartment for two, soon to be three.
So feeling vaguely drunk though he hasn’t had a drop of alcohol in the months since she whispered during their anniversary dinner that they were expecting, Kiyoomi laughs aloud.
Atsumu lifts his eyebrows in surprise.
‘She really, really is’, Kiyoomi says, breaking into an unguarded smile.

Babe, huh?
Pairing: Jay Halstead x Voight!Reader
Word count: 2,097
Warnings: A little angst (but more in a comical way, I think).
Summary: Jay and the reader have been going out for some time when he spots her happily chatting with Sergeant Platt at the district's front desk. He's happily surprised to see her there, but there's one thing she had been holding back from telling him: who her dad is.
Disclaimer: I don’t own any of the One Chicago shows, or its characters, also not associated with it in any way or know anyone involved with it.
A/N: I think that this could have turned out a lot better than it did. But I think it isn't too bad either.
Also, I wanna thank y’all for the amount support that I’ve been getting on my fics! That really means the world to me, guys!! 💕
(y/n) = (your name) (y/l/n) = (your last name) (y/n/n) = (your nickname)

It was an unusually sunny day in Chicago when you left work that noon. You didn’t always go out on your lunch breaks, preferring to just grab something on the machines scattered across the office, but on that Wednesday you’d told your dad that you two would meet for a father-daughter date. And that really was all you were thinking about, as you walked up the steps of the small staircase in front of the 21st District.
“Hey, Trudy!” You greeted the desk sergeant, who had been a friend of your family for as long as you could remember.
“Hi, (y/n/n)! What a surprise to see you here!” She told you, a huge smile on her face. “A nice surprise, for a change!” Platt stated, looking sharply at a younger woman who was standing at the corner of the counter, probably filling out some paperwork.
“Ah, Trudy! You flatter me!” You said innocently, looking at her through your lashes, the face you always used with the trio: Your dad, Trudy, and Al.
“Ha! Always so cute!” The sergeant spoke again, like she was talking to a baby, as the other woman just stared at the scene in shock. “But what are you doing here, anyway? Came to surprise your dad? Because I’m sure he’ll love that!”
“No, it’s not exactly a surprise! We’d previously agreed on a lunch-date for today...” You trailed off.
“Oh! Then that’s why he came back from the raid they just made pacing like a deer in headlights!” Hearing that comment, you couldn’t help but laugh, as you imagined your father acting like that. “Hey, Burgess!” She shouted at the woman near to you. “Are you finishing that already? Because, when you do, you need to go back upstairs and let your sergeant know that his date’s here.” Trudy said simply, winking at you, to which you just responded with a smile.
“Oh, c’mon, sarge! Really? Why can’t you just call or text him?” The woman, Burgess, questioned, poutingly.
“Because I don’t want to? And tell me, again, since when did I start needing to give you a reason to follow my orders, huh, officer? Because I don’t recall getting the memo!” The sergeant barked, practically biting the younger officer’s head off.
“Geez, sarge-” Officer Burgess started answering, as reality finally began to hit her. “Wait,” she breathed out, turning to face you this time, “you’re Voight’s dau-” Burgess stopped in the middle of her sentence, now being cut off by another voice that was very familiar to you.
“Baby?” Shit, you thought. “What are you doing here?” Your boyfriend asked you, with a bright smile on his face.
How could have you possibly forgotten that Jay worked here? At your dad’s district? Of course, you still hoped that they somehow wouldn’t know each other. But you weren’t prepared for that introduction just yet. And it would happen, taking that he wasn’t shy at all about kissing you that passionately right in front of Trudy Platt. One of your dad’s best friends, Trudy Platt. You knew you couldn’t blame him, though. After all, you were the one who kept him in the dark about who your dad was.
“H- hi, Jay.” You managed to mumble whilst catching your breath.
“Hey,” he started, giving you those cute love eyes of his, “I’m surprised to see you here, but not complaining!” He said, raising his hands and smiling at you. “You wanna grab lunch?”
“Uh, I, uh-”
“I’m afraid she’s already taken for lunch, Halstead.” None other than your dad huffed out, from the top of Intelligence’s stairs. Of course, he would have to see that entire scene, and, of course, he would have to know your boyfriend.
Hearing that, Jay turned his head between you and your dad, and, then, looked at Trudy and Burgess, more confused than anything. “Babe?” He decided on asking you about it. To which your dad just gave a side-smile.
“Babe, huh?” He mocked, walking closer to where you were standing. “Something you wanna tell me, honey?”
“I-” You barely started when someone interrupted.
“Please, don’t tell me you’re shacking up with him, (y/n)?!?!?” Trudy cut you off, half-asking, half-begging while you started feeling the heat coming to your cheeks.
"So, (y/n), you gonna explain this? We're all here waiting." Your father told you, no more sense of humor in his features.
"Look, guys… " You started, not really knowing how to move from there. You didn't think you'd have to have the conversations with both your father and your boyfriend at the same time, and in front of Trudy (not to mention the other cops passing by). So you went for the easy way out, maybe it was a bit of a childish choice, but still. "You know what? No, I'm not gonna explain anything to anyone right now," you spoke, making clear that that was meant for all of them, "and, I don’t think that I’m in the mood for lunch anymore, dad." At that, the three cops just kept staring at you, Jay being the first to speak up.
"Uh, dad? (y/n), baby, just tell me what's going on." He pleaded with you, eyes already showing some hurt, which made you feel like the worst person ever. But you just knew that you wouldn’t be able to properly explain anything to anyone at that moment, not in that kind of circumstance anyway, so you decided to get the hell out of there before you buried yourself even deeper.
After you fleed the building, leaving a bunch of stunned police officers behind, Trudy took it upon herself to figure out why on Earth you’d be kissing the stupid Detective Jay Chuckles Halstead: “So, how’s it gonna be, Halstead? Why the hell were you kissing our (y/n/n), hum?” She asked, bluntly, while motioning between herself and Hank.
“Your (y/n/n)?” Jay shot back, completely confused by the whole situation.
“Actually, she’s mine. My daughter.” Voight finally spoke again, fulminating the younger man with his eyes.
“Okay… I think this is my cue to leave." Burgess finally decided to say 𑁋 as she was feeling very awkward 𑁋, sliding off towards the back exit.
“Uh, yeah, um, I’m gonna- I’m gonna go, grab some lunch outside too.” Jay ranted a little, running his hand over the back of his neck and moving towards the exit, right on Kim’s track.
The rest of the day went by tensely at the police district: Jay avoiding both his superiors, as you ducked his calls, and Hank and Trudy sending almost tangible hate waves on his way. It wasn’t like your time at work gone too well either, with the mess you’d made always in the back of your mind.
So 𑁋 after you got back home 𑁋, knowing it was the right, mature, thing to do, you called Jay and, then, your dad, telling them both to come by your place for dinner. Yes, you were about to ambush them. Because you’re a mature person.
“Hey, babe!” You cheerfully greeted your boyfriend, perking up to kiss him, as you opened the apartment door more.
“Hey.” Jay answered coldly while dodging your kiss, at which you frowned in confusion.
“So, um,” you decided to start again, tucking a string of hair behind your ear, “I called you here because I needed to talk to you-”
“Yeah, we definitely need to talk.” He said, cutting you off with a stern look on his face.
At the exact moment you were about to open your mouth to say something, the doorbell rang again and you knew it was your dad. Okay, maybe that whole ambush thing wasn’t a good idea after all. You gave Jay an apologetic look in advance, as you walked back towards the door, only to open it and reveal a, still, very pissed off Hank Voight.
“What’s he doing here?” Your dad barked out, not wasting a second, as he pointed a finger at the man standing behind you.
“You called him too?” This time it was Jay asking. “I thought it was gonna be just the two of us…” He then added quietly.
“Just the two of us! Who the hell do you think you are, huh, Halstead?!”
“Sarge, I’m just trying to-”
“I don’t care what you’re trying to do, you need to get out of here right now so I can talk to my daughter. That’s what you need to do!”
“Enough!” You yelled, finally getting both men’s attention. “Dad, you need to stop talking to Jay like that.”
“But-”
“But, nothing! He is my boyfriend and I love him!” You blurted out, Jay giving you a small smile in response. “So… Now that that’s out of the way… Jay, this is my dad.” You added, motioning for where your father stood by the door. “And, before any of you asks, no, I didn’t know that you two worked together! I thought that maybe you knew each other, but wasn’t ready to make the introductions just yet. And I’m sorry if that caused a, um, situation.”
“Baby… Why didn’t you ever tell me that your father was a cop?”
“I- I just, I was just afraid that’d push you away from me. You know, before we even had a chance.” You admitted shyly.
“Why- why would that push him away from you, (y/n/n)?” That was your dad’s turn to ask.
“Well, I know that you have a reputation, dad. So I figured that maybe he wouldn’t wanna get involved with your daughter of all people. Wouldn’t want the trouble.” You confessed one more time. “Besides, we all saw how, um, fiercely Trudy was willing to “protect me”.” You added, making them both giggle a little.
“Alright, there’s just one more thing that still doesn’t add up.” Your boyfriend started again, still serious but more relaxed this time. “Why isn’t your last name Voight?” He asked, still unsure of what was going on, as you and your dad traded knowing looks with each other.
“Ah, that... After my mom died, I started using her maiden last name. You know, as a way to remember her. It’s been so long now that I actually forget that the Voight’s even there.” You explained. “Sorry, dad.”
“Nah, it’s okay. You know I like the idea.” Hank replied, a soft smile on his lips.
“Ah, okay. That makes sense.” Jay said nervously and started scratching the back of his neck, like he always did when he was getting anxious. “Just- just so you know, princess, I wouldn’t have backed out of our relationship, then. And I’m not going to, now, either.” The anger in your father’s eyes relit but you didn’t really care, not when all you wanted to do was jump your handsome detective and not let him out of your apartment until, at least, the next morning.
“Dad,” you began saying, after deciding to go for a more conciliatory version of it, “don’t be like that, okay? I know that you wanna protect me and everything, but I’m happy with Jay. I really am.”
“And I promise I’ll never, ever, do anything to hurt her, sarge. But, if I do, you should definitely hurt me back with all you got.”
“Oh, I will! And I think you’ve been working with me long enough to know that I don’t need your ‘go ahead’, or anyone else’s, for those matters, Halstead.” Your dad cheerfully stated while shooting a typical Hank Voight fake smile in Jay’s direction. “Now, if my daughter says she’s happy with you…” He started, turning to look at you, as if trying to confirm the information.
“Yes! I am!”
“Then… I suppose I could accept this.” You didn’t give him a single chance to second guess, pulling him in for a tight hug while Jay watched the scene smiling.
“Now let's have dinner! That way you guys can finish talking this whole macho tension out and we can all make a plan to appease Trudy." You told them, moving to heat the takeout you’d ordered earlier in your kitchen, Jay coming to help you in tow.
Many other times you, Jay, and your dad met for dinner, lunch, or even breakfast like that. If you and your boyfriend ever went a little overboard on the PDA, the infamous Hank Voight huff would definitely be heard. But, overall, you knew he was happy for you and Jay. Just like you knew that the detective liked hanging out with you and your dad.

A Will Solace Character Analysis: the Underappreciated Soft Side
I've noticed many fanfictions have Will Solace OOC. So I’ve been thinking about aspects of Will’s personality fans seem to either gloss over or exaggerate. Here, this post is me doing an in-depth analysis explaining Will Solace’s canon personality in the books, and how it can sometimes differ from fanfictions. Sprinkled in this analysis are tips to fanfiction writers on how they write Will as more in-character.
There is one major aspect of Will that people seem to ignore or underemphasize. Nico best explains it when describing Will in this quote
Jason was a fighter. You could tell from the intensity of his stare, his constant alertness, the coiled-up energy in his frame. Will Solace was more like a lanky cat stretched out in sunshine. His movements were relaxed and nonthreatening, his gaze soft and far away. In his faded SURF BARBADOS T-shirt, his cutoff shorts and flip-flops, he looked about as aggressive as a demigod could get, but Nico knew he was brave under fire. During the Battle of Manhattan, Nico had seen him in action - the camp's best combat medic, risking his life to save wounded campers.
To sum it up, Will Solace is a very chill and calm character. A lot of writers make Will more irrational, impulsive, overbearing, and emotional than he actually is. Will is not the type of character to create drama unless he's, as Nico puts it, "under fire." In other words, the intense side of his personality doesn't come out unless the situation is urgent or dire.
Fans remember during the Second Giant War how he gets angry and argues with Nico over Nico's health and shadow-traveling, so many assume Will is going to be this fiery over a lot of other things regarding their relationship. For example, fanfic writers may make Will controlling or overly sensitive with Nico. However, keep in mind, Will gets heated with Nico during the Second Giant War because Nico's shadow-traveling is killing him. This is how Will describes Nico's dire state.
"Coach Hedge told me all about your shadow-travel. You can’t try that again."
"I just did try it again, Solace. I’m fine."
"No, you’re not. I’m a healer. I could feel the darkness in your hand as soon as I touched it. Even if you made it to that tent, you’d be in no shape to fight. But you wouldn’t make it. One more slip, and you won’t come back. You are not shadow-travelling. Doctor’s orders."
Will is a healer. When he touches Nico's hand, he can sense how little sleep and food Nico has been getting and how Nico's being taken over by darkness. Nico is on the verge of death and hasn't cared about his health for a long time. Nico is also stubborn about it, so Will has to be aggressive in order to save Nico's life. This aggressive behavior is not the norm for Will, but it can sometimes come out when he has to assert control in a life-or-death situation.
Will is a calming prescence. He's a diplomat. He stops violence on multiple occassions.
He's one of the few people who's able to calm Clarisse's violent rage, and he does so in a gentle manner.
Clarisse pointed her dagger at Rachel. "What about their allies, huh? Did you see that tribe of two-headed men that arrived yesterday? Or the glowing red dog-headed guys with the big poleaxes? They look pretty barbaric to me. It would’ve been nice if you’d foreseen any of that, if your Oracle power didn’t break down when we needed it most!"
Rachel’s face turned as red as her hair. "That’s hardly my fault. Something is wrong with Apollo’s gifts of prophecy. If I knew how to fix it –"
"She’s right." Will Solace, head counsellor for the Apollo cabin, put his hand gently on Clarisse’s wrist. Not many campers could’ve done that without getting stabbed, but Will had a way of defusing people’s anger. He got her to lower her dagger. "Everyone in our cabin has been affected. It’s not just Rachel."
One of the most underrated Will Solace moments is when he stops a bloody battle from happening between Camp Half-Blood and Camp Jupiter.
But he knew it wouldn’t do any good. After weeks of waiting, agonizing and steaming, the Greeks and Romans wanted blood. Trying to stop the battle now would be like trying to push back a flood after the dam broke.
Will Solace saved the day.
He put his fingers in his mouth and did a taxicab whistle even more horrible than the last. Several Greeks dropped their swords. A ripple went through the Roman line like the entire First Cohort was shuddering.
"DON’T BE STUPID!" Will yelled. "LOOK!"
People are so used to seeing demigods, especially male demigods, being aggressive fighters that they can't wrap their heads around a brave and strong demigod who actively tries to avoid unnecessary conflict and destruction as much as he can.
And that's Will Solace's strength: he has the ability to prevent as much harm as possible.
Will is a difficult character to write. There's a lot of dueling factors with his personality. He's calm and pacifying while also being brave and assertive. He's fun and lighthearted while also being intelligent, logical, and grounded. He's laidback while also being responsible and hardworking. He's insecure but not melodramatic. He's very caring and protective but not pushy.
Will's personality confuses Nico sometimes too.
He’d always thought of Will as easygoing and laid back. Apparently he could also be stubborn and aggravating.
The trick to writing Will is to keep in mind his default personality is a soft and lighthearted character. Writers tend to overemphasize the hard side of his personality when his default personality is actually the soft side.
Think of the relaxing, lanky cat metaphor Nico uses for him. He and Nico bicker often, and it works for Will because he rolls with everything and doesn't take things too seriously. He's able to alleviate Nico's moodiness with humor, wittiness, groundedness, and patience. Nico affectionately calls Will a "dork" because Will usually keeps things light. Interestingly enough, he's able to be lighthearted without coming across as insensitive or an airheaded goofball, the latter of which is something Nico dislikes about Percy's personality. On a related sidenote, another way writers make Will OOC is they make him too dumb or too immature. I know I mentioned to focus on Will's soft side, but be careful to avoid that too. He's a SENSIBLE, lanky cat.
The way Will keeps his composure during a stressful situation by using laughter while still being mature is expressed well in this exchange with Apollo. (Yes, Will has a lot to manage.)
It was difficult to think of this young man as my son. He was so poised, so unassuming, so free of acne. He also didn’t appear to be awestruck in my presence. In fact, the corner of his mouth had started twitching.
“Are—are you amused?” I demanded.
Will shrugged. “Well, it’s either find this funny or freak out. My dad, the god Apollo, is a fifteen-year-old—”
“Sixteen,” I corrected. “Let’s go with sixteen.”
“A sixteen-year-old mortal, lying in a cot in my cabin, and with all my healing arts—which I got from you—I still can’t figure out how to fix you.”
“There is no fixing this,” I said miserably. “I am cast out of Olympus. My fate is tied to a girl named Meg. It could not be worse!”
Will laughed, which I thought took a great deal of gall. “Meg seems cool. She’s already poked Connor Stoll in the eyes and kicked Sherman Yang in the crotch.”
The fiercer side of Will's personality comes out only when the situation calls for it; this happens sometimes when he has to be a caring family member, a responsible healer, or a warrior in a dire situation. Even when he gets more forceful, he doesn't get more forceful than he has to.
Since Will has such a balanced and lighthearted personality, what are his flaws? What are the dark sides of his personality? There are four main things that stick out.
1. He's insecure about his self-perceived lack of abilities.
"I agree," Will said. "I wish I was a better archer … I wouldn’t mind shooting my Roman relative off his high horse. Actually, I wish I could use any of my father’s gifts to stop this war." He looked down at his own hands with distaste. "Unfortunately, I’m just a healer."
2. He sometimes struggles to endure the heavy responsibilities he has as a healer and as a protector to his family.
“I got it reattached,” Will told me, his voice shaky with exhaustion. His scrubs were speckled with blood. “I need somebody to keep him stable.”
I pointed to the woods. “But—”
“I know!” Will snapped. “Don’t you think I want to be out there searching too? We’re shorthanded for healers. There’s some salve and nectar in that pack. Go!”
I was stunned by his tone. I realized he was just as concerned about Kayla and Austin as I was. The only difference: Will knew his duty. He had to heal the injured first. And he needed my help.
3. He forces himself to bottle his emotions to keep his composure.
Will laughed under his breath. “I’m terrified. But one thing you learn as head counselor: you have to keep it together for everyone else. Let’s get you on your feet."
Here's a second example.
I rested my hand on Will’s shoulder. “Don’t worry. We’ll be back by dawn.”
His mouth trembled ever so slightly. “How can you be sure?”
4. He constantly worries about his loved ones.
Nico rested his hand on Will’s shoulder. “Apollo, we were worried. Will was especially.”
In conclusion, Will Solace's personality is difficult to get correct. But don't worry, if you write Will as a laidback, witty cat in your fanfics, I guarantee he'll be more in-character than many other fanfics with Will Solace.
(Note: I am only human. If you believe I'm misinterpreting some aspects of Will's personality, feel free to express it. What I say isn't 100 percent the right interpretation.)

Research Purposes ~ Part 2
Tumblr media
*Not my gif*
Pairing: Jay x Reader
Requested: Yes
Prompt: What happens when the only person in the world you didn’t want finding out does?
Warnings: Swearing
A/N: Part one found here (NSFW, 18+)
A/N 2: Also thank you to @enchantedblackrose for the idea 😊
If you are not 18+ and are unable to read part 1 and want to back story just hit me up (:
“We’re so freaking late. There’s no way we’ll have time to stop for my car.” You rushed around Jay’s apartment, pouring coffee for both of you.
“And whose fault is that.” Jay looked at you accusingly.
“I was just trying to help the environment.” You shrugged, handing him his cup after checking the lid.
“You and I both know we wasted more water in there together than we would’ve showering on our own.” He retorted grabbing his badge and gun off the coffee table to secure them to his belt.
“Yeah okay so I wanted shower sex sue me.” You rolled your eyes shrugging your jacket on.
“I wasn’t the one complaining.” He smiled, taking a drink.
“We would’ve had more than enough time if you didn’t insist on cuddling this morning.” You pointed out, remembering how he pulled you back into his chest every time you tried to move out of bed a couple hours prior.
“You like shower sex. I like cuddling.” He teased handing you your purse.
“Maybe we can draft up an alternate schedule.” You joked.
“I do hear compromise is the key to a healthy relationship.” He replied.
“We gotta go if you don’t want to get pulled over for speeding.” You changed the subject reaching for the door knob, before being tugged back by your arm, turning in time for Jay’s lips to meet yours in a sweet, passionate kiss.
“To get us both through the day.” Jay winked reaching around you to open the door and usher you out.
This was the second time that week you and Jay would be showing up to work together. Nobody noticed it the first time, but your anxiety climbed at the thought of someone recognizing and approaching you about it. What would you say? You and Jay were only in it purely for the sex. Right? Regardless of that fact that you had stayed at his house almost every night the past couple weeks even without the promise of sex, or how your stuff was starting to accumulate at his house from the past few months. A few t-shirts mixed in with his, hair straightener resting on his bathroom organizer, makeup scattered about on the dresser. Friends with benefits, that’s all it was. Nothing more and you certainly were not gaining feelings for him. Absolutely not that was against the rules and you were not about to be some stereotypical fuck buddy turned feelings trope, but you were getting sloppy apparently. You agreed to enter through the front while Jay entered through the back. Skipping up the steps you threw a smile at Trudy offering her a good morning, but in return she stared you down, eyebrow raised as she rested against the desk.
“What?” You stopped in your tracks in front of her. But she stayed silent giving you a look, and you just knew she knew. She was Trudy Platt. She knew everything.
“You should tell him.” She whispered to you, and it’s not the first time she had said something of the sort recently.
“Tell who, what?” You continued to fake innocence as you had the times before.
“It’s going to end badly.” She pushed again.
“It already did end badly.” You reminded her before trudging upstairs feeling the heat of her stare still on your back. Everyone except Kim was already there, including Jay who had his feet kicked up on his desk looking through a file. You greeted everyone draping your coat over the back of your chair and falling into it.
The first hour ticked by slowly, and you found your eyes moving across the room to focus on Jay. Opened documents lay across your desk. He looked so relaxed, shoulders loose, breaths slow and even, head resting against his palm as he fought not to fall asleep. You knew he would rather be out chasing suspects, but deep down you were starting to register you were okay with paperwork days. It meant he was safe, and that thought scared you a little. The last time you had those same thoughts you were staring at a different man in the room. A man who sat not too far behind Jay, clicking his pen absentmindedly as he often did when he was bored.
“Ruz, I’ll break the damn pen.” Kevin grumbled, as he had many times before in response to the habit.
“Sorry.” Adam mumbled, setting the utensil onto his desk away from his fidgety hands.
You chuckled at the small exchange, experiencing the exact same one many times in the years you had been detailed in intelligence with the best people you could’ve ever asked to work with. That certainly didn’t mean it wasn’t complicated though, and you were the very obvious example of that. You watched Jay’s head bob catching himself before adjusting in order to keep himself awake. His eyes accidentally met yours, heart rate immediately increasing. He sent you a small smile as his eyes started to roam over your body. Looking for a distraction from the tedious work. You couldn’t scold him. It wasn’t like you hadn’t been doing the same thing the past 10 minutes. Looking at his arms that were tight against his sleeves you wondered if the scratch marks you left on his biceps this morning would still be prevalent, or if the fading hickey from nights prior was still noticeable on his hip bone.
“I need coffee. Anyone else?” You asked trying to divert the obvious eye fucking your were giving each other. Everyone in the room raising their hands. You laughed taking notice of all the tired eyes who so obviously wanted to bash their heads off the desk already bored out of their minds, just waiting for a case to jump off.
“I’ll help.” Jay offered, voice gruff from barely speaking all morning. Together you poured and distributed everyone cups. Sitting back down into your chair when Jay was handing Kev his.
“You gonna shave that thing anytime soon? You usually can’t stand it past a week.” Kevin asked Jay, referring to his beard. They had always teased him whenever he claimed it grew in patchy compared to Adam and Kevin’s and it usually resulted in him having a clean shaven face the next shift. But it had grown in quite nicely this time, and he made sure to keep it presentable by trimming it as needed.
“No, it’s starting to grow on me. I’m keeping it for research anyway. Seems it can enhance far more than just my facial features.” Jay shrugged casually sitting back down atin his chair, and at his words you choked on your coffee spitting it all over your desk. Uncontrollable coughs tickling your throat.
“You good [Y/L/N]?” Hailey asked standing up to help you.
“Yeah..sorry. Just.. went down the wrong pipe. Didn’t expect it to be so.. hot.” You explained between coughs looking across the room to glare at Jay who wore a cocky smirk on his face, flipping through papers not daring to look up at you.
“You forget your ice?” Adam asked, knowing you had put a couple cubes of ice in your coffee every morning cooling it down so you could drink it faster.
“I must’ve. Kinda out of it today.” You shook your head taking napkins out of your drawer to try to clean up the mess you had made on your desk as well as your white shirt.
“I’ll get you some.” He started to walk towards the break room.
“It’s really okay I spit most of it out anyway.” You laughed.
“I’ll just get you a new cup.” He reasoned and you just thanked him not feeling like bickering with him about it. He had been going out of his way to do nice things for you recently. You assumed either so you wouldn’t spill the beans about him and Upton or because he felt bad.
“There’s no way this is coming out..” You grumbled dabbing at the tan stain forming on your shirt, “Do you happen to have a spare?” You asked, turning towards Hailey.
“I’m sorry I don’t. I used my spare the other day after that shooting and haven’t brought another extra.” Hailey apologized. You waved her off thanking her anyway.
“There’s one in my locker.” Jay offered, “You’ll probably just have to tuck it in.” You thought for a moment, it probably wouldn’t look like a big deal. Just a friend helping out a friend.
“Okay. Thanks.” You nodded getting up to head to the locker room where Jay followed. “I know where your locker is.” You rolled your eyes.
“Yes, but you don’t know my combination nor are you very good at opening dial locks. Hence why you have a keypad one on yours.” Jay pointed out, spinning his combination. He was right. You could never open dial locks.
“Do you analyze everything I do?” You crossed your arms annoyed at how well he always seemed to know you.
“You’re an interesting person babe.” He smiled handing you the shirt as he kissed your forehead.
“Watch yourself. You don’t know who’s hiding in here.” You lectured, “this is your fault by the way.”
“I know. Total win-win situation.” Jay laughed, smiling brightly.
“You’re gonna be the death of me Jay Halstead.” You groaned, a small smile on your lips.
“What a way to go though, huh?” He quipped, giving you a quick kiss.
“Get out.” You pushed his chest.
“What? No free peep show? I offered you my shirt and everything.” He acted offended.
“They’re gonna start getting suspicious if we are in here any longer go.” He huffed at your reply giving in and leaving as you turned around to switch shirts. Jay’s scent immediately overwhelmed you as you slipped his shirt on. Causing your body to relax in turn at the familiar fragrance. Jay was right, you had to tuck the shirt into your jeans, otherwise it could’ve been a dress thanks to your large height difference. Turning to walk out of the locker room, you were met with Adam holding a new cup of coffee out to you making you jump at the unexpected body in your path. “Thank you.” You giggled taking it from his hand to take a drink.
“Did you change?” He asked, eyeing the shirt you now wore.
“Oh yeah. I had white on and it was gonna stain so Jay offered me his shirt.” You explained, shifting on your feet at the uncomfortable conversation.
“Well I have one. It might fit you better.” He offered moving to walk towards his locker, but you put a hand to his chest stopping him.
“I’m good this one is perfectly fine.” You reassured him, Adam stared at you, breaking the tense silence with a long sigh, leaning against the side of the lockers.
“Listen we never got to talk about that night you came to my apartment. I just wanted to say I’m really sorry you-“ He began to apologize when Kevin peeked his head in the door.
“Hey, I’m sorry to interrupt..” he looked between the two of you awkwardly, “but we just got a case.” Adam cleared his throat as you nodded,
“We can..finish this later.” You chewed on your lip pushing past him to grab your coat out of Kevin’s hand.
It was nearing 8 o’clock by the time Voight had given you guys permission to go home and get some sleep. Knowing you’d be returning bright and early in the morning to continue to case.
“What do you think about pizza tonight? I’ve been craving some Bartolis.” Jay asked walking down the stairs behind you.
“I’m not sure that’s a good idea.” You stopped turning to face him when you rounded the corner out of sight.
“Well I can just get pizza and I’ll stop for whatever else you want too.” He offered.
“I’m not talking about food, Jay.” You laughed, looking at the ground. Your mind had been racing since showing up with Jay this morning.
“Then..what are you talking about?” He asked, stepping closer towards you.
“I mean I don’t know I’ve been at your place almost every night the last couple weeks.” You whispered, hoping your voice wouldn’t carry to anyone nearby.
“Well we can go to your place. That’s fine.” He reasoned.
“No that’s not..” You sighed not able to find the words.
“Hey, just talk to me. What’s up.” He encouraged hands falling to your hips holding you gently.
“I’m just worried we’re starting to get careless. Showing up to work twice in one week together. One of these days we’re bound to get caught either coming in together or showing up on scene together. We don’t even know what this is. I don’t want to have to talk to Voight about it in the meantime.” You explained.
“We can be more careful. I promise. I just don’t want you to freak out about this.” He assured you tucking your hair behind your ear. “Can we just address how good you look in my shirt. I’m so glad you’re such a klutz..” Jay’s eyes roamed up and down your body.
“I am not a klutz! How did you expect me to react?” You crossed your arms, glaring at him as you did a few hours prior.
“Well is it not the truth? This thing is still on my face purely for your satisfaction.” He reminded you by trailing his lips down your neck, immediately summoning goosebumps from the raggedness tickling in the wake of his lips. He winked knowing his point was proven, moving up to place a soft kiss on your lips. “Sooo pizza?” He asked, pulling back, hopeful look on his face.
“Fine, but I’m not going in to get it.” You rolled your eyes, a bright smile on your face when he wrapped an arm around your shoulders pulling you towards his truck but when you rounded the corner your eyes connected with Adam’s who stood near the door, eyes wide between you two as Jay let his arm fall to his side, your feet rooted to the floor.
“I forgot my wallet in my locker.” Adam explained stammering over his words.
“Well don’t let us keep you. See you tomorrow brother.” Jay remained calm grabbing your arm to pull you out. Patting Adam on the shoulder when you passed.
“Shit!” You cursed when you reached Jay’s truck.
“What?” He questioned and you looked at him dumbfounded.
“You’re fucking kidding me right?” You scoffed.
“He’s not gonna tell Voight. For starters it’s Adam. Plus we know about him and Hailey. He can’t.” He shrugged.
“That’s not what I’m worried about!” You yelled.
“You just said that’s what you were worried about.” Jay reminded you, trying to catch up. “Babe.” He urged when you didn’t answer him.
“You don’t get it Jay!” You shook your head, lump forming in your throat at the anxiety the situation presented.
“No, you’re right I don’t. I’m sorry. Help me understand.” He grabbed a hold of your hand trying to get you to face him.
“Not right now.” You chewed your lip feeling a few tears fall down your cheeks, quickly swiping them away before they were seen, but you knew Jay would know regardless. You were tired, hungry, and now slightly panicking at the thought of having to address the entire situation. His hand squeezed yours tighter before starting his truck putting it in drive.

A Favor: Part Twenty-Three
Nessian Modern AU
Masterlist
a/n: so yeah this isn’t my best work bc i havent been feeling great lately but i hope you guys can stay patient with me until i get my shit together. we’re almost to the end🤞
***
Sitting crammed between Elain and Feyre on the gray couch in Lana’s office, Nesta has to cross her legs prettily and pretend she doesn’t want to peel out of her skin right there. She doesn’t know what she was thinking when she invited her sisters to one of her therapy sessions, but she’s assuming it would be considered rude to kick them out now.
“Who wants to speak first?” Lana’s bob swings as she looks at each of them. The office is ice cold today, and Feyre and Elain’s presence doesn’t help the chill in the air.
Nesta crosses her arms before she can be asked to speak. “No, thank you,” she says. She knows everyone probably expects better from her, but no way in hell is she going to be the first to open up in front of this crowd. “Feyre,” she turns to her youngest sister instead, “why don’t you say something?”
“Actually, why don’t you set the example, Nesta?” Lana gives her a look, making her cheeks redden with irritation.
“Fine,” Nesta grumbles. She clears her throat. “As you can see, I have made moves to reconnect with my sisters. I invited them here because I hoped that therapy would bring us closer and also make them more… tolerable.”
Elain coughs, “Bitch.”
Nesta smiles tightly. “Elain could especially use this, I think.”
Lana is already frowning. She never frowns this early into a session. “We’ll start with an easy question, then. What’s been on your mind lately, Nesta?”
Nesta purses her lips, pretending to think. “Nothing important. I’m looking at jobs for the summer. I think Azriel keeps sneaking money into my purse, and it’s starting to become more than a little condescending. I caught up with some friends from school, and I was polite enough to pay for lunch.” She mentions off to the side to Elain, “Lucien was there, too.”
“Why would I care?” Elain sneers. She spies Lana’s disapproving look and lowers her head demurely. “Sorry,” she murmurs.
“That’s alright,” Lana says. “Why don’t you go next?”
“Me?” Elain’s head snaps up, and Nesta holds in her snicker.
“Start by describing your relationship with Nesta. I heard you two used to be very close.” Lana uncaps her pen, preparing to write.
Elain flushes lightly and folds her hands. “That was when we were children. The only thing keeping us together was that we shared a home. When we stopped living in the same place, some of us had no problem leaving others in the dust.”
“You can use my name,” Nesta rolls her eyes, “I’m right here.”
From the corner of her vision, Feyre cringes.
“Are you saying you feel abandoned by Nesta?” Lana continues probing.
Elain’s answering silence tells more than enough. Therapy must actually be paying off, though, because Nesta only thinks about interrupting and defending herself for a second before shaking it off. Her mind focuses on the word abandonment instead.
Lana is focusing on the same thing, because she leans closer and says, “Being abandoned bothers you?”
“I never said that,” Elain says indignantly.
“It would bother most people.”
Nesta watches Elain sigh and blink her big doe eyes at Lana. She’s always been able to use those eyes on anybody for anything. “I just don’t understand why I’m the villain for expecting a little loyalty,” Elain says sweetly. “Especially when you take a look at this face.” She cups her round cheeks. “You know psychology. How could you abandon this face?”
Nesta’s jaw hangs open. “Are we still talking about me?” She remembers Cassian telling her the story behind Azriel ghosting Elain, and a pang of guilt and pity hits her. She still hasn’t talked with Elain about why Azriel left Velaris, and she knows she won’t be able to decide whether to spare Az or not until she does.
“So that’s my turn,” Elain finishes up. “Feyre can go next.”
Lana is writing something sharply on her notepad, but she nods coolly. “Feyre, how would you describe your relationship with your sisters?”
“Oh, we don’t have time for all of that,” Feyre laughs awkwardly and waves a hand.
Nesta agrees, but the look Lana gives Feyre tells her that yes, they do have time.
Gulping, Feyre glances around. “Well, I was born last, so I guess that made me the outsider of the family. I never had much in common with my sisters, but now that we’re older I… hoped that we would grow past that.”
Translation: she hoped that once she found her happy ending in Rhysand’s arms, poor little Nesta and Elain would happily assimilate into her new community of wealthy friends, putting the cherry on top of her perfect life. And while Elain did that exact thing, it’s always bothered Feyre that Nesta won’t do the same.
Feyre continues, “I admit I’m not the best at understanding Nesta. Elain and I get along fine now, but Nesta…” Feyre meets her eyes. “It’s like nothing we do is enough for her, but for some reason I can’t stop trying.”
“Whose fault is that?” Nesta mutters.
“You want her approval,” Lana hums, taking notes.
“Is that what it is?” Feyre looks away.
Nesta refrains from saying yes, that’s exactly what it is, and it’s not my problem if you keep looking for something I can’t give.
“What are your feelings about that, Nesta?” Lana turns her focus to her. “Remember that this is a safe space.”
It really isn’t, not with two siblings holding long term grudges against Nesta. But once and for all, she’s going to set the record straight. “I spent most of my life being a bad sister.” Nesta’s voice is apathetic, straightforward. “I let Feyre take the burden of providing for us even though I was the oldest, and I didn’t know how to be anything other than cruel to my family. So once I had the means to do so, I cut everyone off for all of our sakes. I still don’t regret it, because being a stranger is better than being a bad sister.”
In that way, Nesta is a bit like her mother. Nesta was angry after her death, but she knows she would have been even angrier if Magdalene Archeron had lived and continued to be a disappointing parent. In that way, both of them are wise for leaving their families when they did.
“Or you could just be a good sister,” Elain interrupts with a drawl.
Nesta smirks bitterly at her. “I’d rather die.”
Feyre takes in a breath. “Why? Why are you like that with us?” She blinks furiously, and Nesta can see the simmer of her emotions. “It was okay when we thought you hated everybody, but you don’t. You only hate me and Elain.”
Nesta looks to Lana for help, but her therapist is sitting this one out. She sighs through her nose. “I don’t hate you,” she says, even though they might never understand. The next line comes with great difficulty. “I’ve loved you since before I even knew what love was. But I don’t like you very much, Feyre, and you don’t like me, either. Please stop trying to change that.”
When she finally meets Feyre’s eyes, though, they’re glimmering with tears. “How can I stop trying to change that?” Feyre whispers. “How can I give up on us like that?”
For Nesta to give Feyre and Elain the relationship they want from her would require nothing but lies on her part. And as much as she wishes she was capable of lying about this, she can’t do it.
Looking away and down at her hands, Nesta mutters, “It’s not fun for me either, but it’s how I am. I can’t be easy or friendly with you. I hate watching you try to make me be easy or friendly.”
Nobody says anything to that, but when Nesta looks up again Lana gives her a remote nod that Feyre and Elain don’t catch. Thank you for your vulnerability, it says.
“You said something interesting, Nesta,” Lana breaks the silence. “Did you see your sisters as your responsibility to raise?”
Nesta shrugs. “I was the oldest,” she repeats.
“Your father was the oldest.”
“He wouldn’t do shit even if you held a gun to his head, so I was up next.” Though Nesta hadn’t done shit either. Neither had Elain, but the rules have always been different for her. Elain redeems herself to others by handing out sunny smiles and pretending to have the intelligence of a fawn.
Lana stares at Nesta until Nesta’s skin starts to heat. “What?” she says defensively.
Ignoring the other two women in the room, Lana leans forward. “You told me once early into our relationship that part of the reason you left Tennessee was to get away from your sisters. You said you were heartbroken when they ended up following you here.”
Nesta doesn’t breathe or look to see her sisters’ reactions.
“Now I’m going to ask: did you really want to get away from your sisters, or did you want to escape the feeling of failing them?”
Nesta doesn’t know how to answer, because to her they might as well be the same thing. Having Feyre and Elain around is like having a weight tied to her chest. The lingering guilt every time Feyre is in a room, her existence screaming I’m the reason you’re still alive. Elain’s constant expectations of unconditional support and loyalty, whether it’s reciprocated or not. It’s all so heavy. And it all goes back to the fact that the three of them were once just helpless children.
If she couldn’t take care of her sisters, how is she supposed to take care of any child, ever?
Nesta releases a weary sigh. “You’re going to bring this up the next time we have the baby talk, aren’t you?”
Lana’s eyes sparkle. “Don’t get ahead of yourself just yet.” But Nesta can see from where she sits that her therapist’s notepad is covered in bullet points.
***
“I need to use the bathroom.” Feyre is hopping back and forth on her feet once the session is over. “You guys head down to the parking lot without me.” She exits in a rush, leaving the two sisters alone. Nesta hisses in frustration, nearly chasing after Feyre so she won’t have to face the inevitable awkward conversation with Elain.
By the end of the session, it was Elain that broke and pleaded with Nesta, “Don’t do everything we want, then. Just keep doing better, the way you’ve already been doing. I’ll be happy with just that.”
Nesta was surprised that Elain had even noticed her efforts, but she retorted, “And how do you plan to do better?”
To which Elain twirled her hair and murmured something halfheartedly about, “I might be more open to taking criticism or whatever.”
Though it was the absolute bare minimum, it was still a relief for Nesta to hear Elain admit that she has flaws worth criticizing.
Now, Nesta clutches the straps of her purse and turns for the stairwell leading to the parking lot. Elain follows without comment.
Inside the stairwell, Nesta asks, “Have you spoken to Azriel since he left Velaris?”
Elain looks surprised at the sudden question, and doesn’t remember to be guarded when she answers, “No. Why?”
Nesta shrugs, her heels thumping loudly on the linoleum stairs. “Because I know what happened between you two. I know why he left.”
Elain halts midstep, grabbing Nesta’s arm and turning to face her with wide eyes. “What do you mean, you know? He told you?”
“He told Cassian, and Cassian told me.” Nesta hardly cares that she’s being a poor friend to Azriel by spilling all this to Elain, and continues, “If I had known he was such a coward, I would have kicked him out of our place a long time ago… but I figured I would get your input on it first.”
She’s never seen Elain look so genuinely pleading before. “Get my input on what?” Elain breathes. “What did he say about me? Was it something I did?”
At that torn face that borders on heartbroken, Nesta decides that she’ll do more than kick Azriel out of the cabin. She’ll kick him off the whole mountain.
She shoves Elain’s back to get Elain detached from her and moving down the stairs again, and as they walk, Nesta spills everything she knows. She tells Elain about Rhysand’s talent of shoving his nose into places it doesn’t belong, and how one conversation with him managed to convince Azriel to ditch Elain for good. She tells her about how instead of having a straightforward conversation with Elain, Azriel chose to leave the city and hide out in the mountains like a pussy. She might sound blunt, but Elain needs blunt. She needs to know the unfiltered truth of things.
By the time they reach the floor where their cars are parked, Elain is silent. “Did he really say that?” she finally asks quietly. “He said he wants me to hate him?”
“That’s what I heard.” After a moment, Nesta feels the need to add, “You should hate him, though. He fucked up bad.”
When Elain continues strolling for their cars without replying, concern bites at Nesta. “You are mad at him, right? And mad at Rhysand? You’re not going to forgive them, right?”
“I’m not a total pushover,” Elain snaps. She stares at the cement ground as they walk. “I’m just… more disappointed than anything else. He gave up so easily.” She chuckles without humor. “It sounds like he was looking for an excuse to get away from me.”
Nesta frowns. “I don’t think he would’ve spent so long moping around our house if he wanted to leave you.” Though they can never truly know what Azriel was thinking or feeling until he grows a pair and talks to Elain. Still, she shudders at having to defend him.
“I take it he doesn’t mope anymore?” Elain says.
Nesta doesn’t know how to answer that truthfully. She knows there’s more to Azriel than he lets her and Cassian see, and she knows he’s gotten better at keeping his feelings to himself. So she says, “It looks like he’s doing better, but I really don’t know.” They reach Elain’s car.
“Were you in love with him?” Nesta suddenly asks. Or worse, is she still in love with him?
Elain digs around for her keys in her purse. “You know how I am. Of course I was.”
“Not anymore, though?”
Elain looks up, keys now in hand. “It’s hard to still feel love for someone I haven’t talked to in two months.”
Then it wasn’t real love. Nesta is relieved, even though it doesn’t change the fact that Elain is hurting either way.
Elain jabs her keys at Nesta and says sharply, “Don’t you dare punish him for what he did. That’s for me to decide on.”
Nesta’s brow creases in refusal. “I’ll do what I need to do, and you do you.” She’ll have to be careful with her plotting, though, considering Azriel is Cassian’s brother.
“No.” Elain surprises Nesta with the force in her tone. “He’s your roommate and your friend. Keep treating him like it.”
Elain makes it sound easier than it is, and Nesta wants to argue until she sees Feyre heading down the parking lot toward them. “Fine,” she grumbles halfheartedly.
Elain gives her one final long look, not of threat but something else. “Thank you—for inviting us today.” That’s all she says before getting in the driver’s seat of her little red car. At the same time, Feyre catches up to them.
“Where are you parked?” Feyre pants as she approaches Nesta. She sounds a bit out of breath, like she ran to get here before Nesta could drive off alone.
Nesta points down the lot to where her scrappy old car is waiting for her, and Feyre straightens up with a grim smile. “I’ll walk you.”
Nesta knows that arguing isn’t worth it, so she allows Feyre to trail her the rest of the way to her car. Once they reach the old thing, Nesta gives a curt goodbye and heads straight for the driver’s door. Before she can touch the handle, Feyre attacks her from behind with a hug.
“Get off me, freak!” Nesta tries to jostle her way out of Feyre’s arms. She tries being nice to her sisters one time and this is what she gets—
Feyre only squeezes her tighter. “You don’t have to hug back. Just let me love you my way.”
Nesta squirms for another second before stilling. Swallowing tightly, she stares at the reflection of herself and Feyre in the car door window. One of her hands goes to where Feyre’s hands are clasped around her stomach, and she stands there without moving. She can’t remember the last time she shared affection with a family member like this, but it must have been before their mother died.
The warmth at Nesta’s back doesn’t leave, like Feyre is trying to pour all her understanding into the hug. Silently saying, I’m finally starting to get it.
In a way, Nesta is starting to get it, too. After all, how do sisters with such a complicated history begin to forgive each other?
Not by apologizing, but by doing better in the future.
***
On her way home, Nesta remembers at the last minute to stop by Gwyn’s apartment to pick up one of her sweaters. She doesn’t know when Gwyn started raiding her closet like it was a free mall, but she has a school event next week and doesn’t plan on letting her nicest clothes rot at Gwyn’s forever.
Nesta enters using the key beneath the doormat, knowing Gwyn is at work and won’t mind her stopping by. She scans the living and dining areas for a glimpse of brown cashmere, but only finds scattered books and a disorganized mess. Her fingers twitch with the urge to stop and tidy up the place, but she continues hunting for the sweater. Gwyn promised it would be waiting in plain sight for her.
Realizing the scatter-brained girl probably forgot to put the sweater out for her, Nesta pauses in the hallway leading to Gwyn’s bedroom and bites her lip. She doesn’t know if bedrooms are off limits or not, considering how often Gwyn and Emerie have barged into hers, but she knows she doesn’t want to make a second trip here just for a sweater.
Without giving it further thought, she strides into Gwyn’s room—
And yelps to find Gwyn on the bed.
Except she isn’t alone, and there’s definitely another body under the dark green blanket with her, and whoever it is definitely has their head between her legs.
Nesta spins away at the same time she hears Gwyn’s cry of surprise. She braces one hand against the doorjamb and presses the other to her freezing cold face, not having any words for what she just saw.
“Nesta?” Gwyn calls from behind her. “What the hell are you doing here?”
“Um, have you seen my sweater? It’s the expensive one.” She’ll just grab it and leave. Or maybe she’ll just leave—yes, that sounds like a good idea.
“Nesta?” a new, deeper voice repeats.
Gwyn hisses, and Nesta freezes because she recognizes that voice. She wants to be wrong so badly, but she has to whirl back around to confirm for herself.
“Azriel?”

Note
Winteriron, both Tony and Bucky are insanely jealous of each other bc they think the other is super into Steve. But like, in reality, Steve's a troll and Tony and Bucky are the stupidest at seeing what's right in front of them.
I hope this is okay, this prompt really got away from me
~
“They’re idiots, Your Honor,” Steve moaned, collapsing face-down into Natasha’s couch.
“And just where did you learn that phrase?” Natasha asked from her armchair. She sounded amused, damn her, as though his real and totally valid problems were of no concern to her. And maybe they weren’t; she did, after all, have other issues on her mind, like what she was going to wear to Capitol Hill the next time she needed to tell Congress to fuck off when they tried to put restrictions on the team. Still, it was rude to make light of his problems.
“I can learn new things,” he grumbled into the expensive leather. “I have the Twitter.”
Natasha made a strangled sound that sounded suspiciously like she was laughing but when he raised his head to glare at her, her face was perfectly composed. He glared at her anyway. She probably deserved it and he was still in a bad mood.
“What did they do this time?” she asked eventually. She sounded sympathetic but he was on to her now. He squinted at her, just to make sure that she knew that he was watching her. She just raised an unimpressed eyebrow. Damn spies, never being impressed by anything that he did… not that that was really a surprise. Tony was never impressed by anything he did either and Thor was unimpressed by Midgardians in general.
“Tony has convinced himself Bucky and I were dating back before the war,” he informed her.
She groaned. “He didn’t.”
“He did. And Bucky thinks that the only reason Tony and I aren’t dating is because I haven’t figured out that Tony has feelings for me yet so he keeps trying to tell me about all of Tony’s good points.”
“But Tony doesn’t have feelings for you.”
“I know that, and you know that, but Bucky is an idiot who doesn’t know that.”
Natasha groaned again. “And Tony is even worse,” she muttered. “So what did you do?”
He looked at her.
She sighed. “Tell me you didn’t tease them.”
“In my defense!” Steve began. “I didn’t think Tony would take it seriously when I told him that of course Bucky and I were fucking like rabbits during the war. I thought he’d do what he always does and make a dumb quip and tell me that he’s going to tell the whole internet that I’m a troll.”
“I told you to stop doing that.”
“Won’t.”
“They’re never going to get together if you keep causing problems like this.”
“They’re idiots who won’t communicate with each other,” Steve said stubbornly. “It’s not my problem if they can’t figure out I’m not serious.”
“Forget Tony telling the internet you’re a troll; I’m going to tell them and they’ll believe me.”
This was not a terribly effective threat, as Steve didn’t really care if the entire world knew he was a troll or not. Unfortunately, Natasha apparently figured that out because she narrowed her eyes thoughtfully and then added, “Or I could always just say that your birthday isn’t actually the fourth of July.”
He knew she was still mad about that. “You wouldn’t.”
“Wouldn’t I?” she said innocently. “Oh and Steve? Figure it out before next week, please. If they get together next week, Clint wins the pool and I refuse to give him any more money.”
Steve stared at her. “You two have a very odd relationship.”
Her smile was downright filthy as she purred, “But a very fulfilling one too.”
~
Steve had a plan. It wasn’t necessarily a good plan—the Man with a Plan really only had a plan when it came to battle strategy—but he did have one. He just wasn’t sure if this plan was going to backfire horribly on him.
“Well,” he muttered in the elevator, “at least it’ll be funny.”
And it was. It was really incredibly funny to see the looks on everyone’s faces as he tromped into the kitchen for breakfast, declared, “Natasha! Wonderful morning!” and kissed her square on the mouth.
He turned to Clint. “Clint! Great to see you too!” Clint tried to dodge, but Steve caught him and planted a big ol’ wet one on his mouth.
“Bruce!” he began only to see Bruce’s skin tinged the slightest shade of green. “Nope! Thor!”
That was all he had to say before Thor exclaimed, “An excellent new bonding idea, Captain,” and kissed Steve before Steve could kiss him first. It was a little more thorough than Steve would have liked, but hey, it was all in the name of romance so he decided not to complain about it.
“Rhodey!”
“Take one step closer, Flag Boy, and I will personally repulsor you in the ass.”
“Got it!” And he swung back around to Sam instead. “Sam!” At least Sam was laughing while Steve kissed him. It was a nice change to being greeted as though he was contagious.
And then it was time for the big two. The two that really mattered. The two that Steve was going to personally throw off the tower if they still couldn’t get their shit together after this.
“Bucky!” Barely the briefest kiss before he was pulling away and cheerfully saying, “Yuck! Let’s never do that again, okay?”
And lastly—“Tony!” Another brief kiss before he pulled away and said, “Tony, for a billionaire playboy, you sure do kiss like a limp fish.”
“Hey!” Tony protested.
In the background, he heard Clint whisper to Natasha, “Are we sure he hasn’t been replaced by a shapeshifting alien or something?”
“That would be the Skrulls,” Thor said, sounding very amused, “and I do not believe they would be so foolish as to give away their game this early.”
“Well, it sure can’t be Stevie,” Bucky muttered bitterly. “He would never compare kissing Tony to kissing a fish.”
“Really, Bucky?” Steve said. “And why wouldn’t I do that, exactly?”
Bucky looked a little like a deer caught in the headlights. Steve probably would have felt bad for putting his closest friend on the spot like that but he really was getting very tired of the pining. And the stupidity. And the waxing poetic about the perfect shape of Tony’s ass. Like, sure, it was fine, but it wasn’t fine enough to write literal sonnets to.
“Uh,” Bucky said intelligently and gestured at Tony.
“Sorry, I don’t speak pine tree,” Steve said. “You’ll have to explain.”
“You know,” Bucky mumbled, “cause you’re dating Tony and anyone lucky enough to be dating Tony shouldn’t be calling him a fish.”
Steve opened his mouth but Tony beat him to the push. “I’m not dating Steve,” he said bewilderedly. “Where did—you’re the one dating Steve.”
“Ew, no,” Bucky said immediately.
Steve scowled at him. “Wow, you didn’t have to be so quick about it, punk.”
“Jerk.”
“See?” Tony exclaimed, gesturing between the two of them.
Bucky blinked at him. “What, like you never call Rhodey pet names?”
“That’s different, we’re friends.”
“Yeah, so are Stevie and I.”
“No—no—love story for the ages,” Tony spluttered.
“I’m not dating Steve, Tony!” Bucky exclaimed. “Why would I date him when I wanna be dating you?”
Silence rang in the kitchen.
“What?” Tony eventually whispered.
“I—uh—” That deer in the headlights look was back. But, fortunately, it was only there for a split second before Tony scrambled up out of his chair and into Bucky’s lap, seizing his face between his hands as he kissed him. A beat passed and then Bucky groaned, hands clutching greedily at Tony’s waist.
“Time to go,” Natasha declared.
Bucky stood, just enough to lay Tony out on the table.
“Yep,” Steve agreed, sprinting for the door, the rest of the team right behind him. “JARVIS, schedule the kitchen for a deep clean this afternoon. And once they’re done, tell Bucky I said, ‘You’re welcome.’”
Four hours later, Bucky’s texted response was a very smug, Tony doesn’t kiss like a limp fish at all, asshole.

Bang Chan
Tumblr media
You’re no bragger but you think you’re pretty reasonable most of the times. You understand your boyfriend is a busy person and his work came first and foremost. You’ve tried not to take it personally and he has made it pretty clear before you guys even got into this relationship that he wouldn’t be the best person with time management.
Of course you took a gamble and compromised to form this bond with the one and only Christopher Bang. You had always put his feelings first whether that’s him choosing his friends, work, or music over you, you were definitely okay with that as long as he came back to you at the end of the day. Even the smallest texts nearing the end of the night like “Goodnight sweetie, hope you had a good day!” was enough for you. You weren’t asking for much. You don’t know how much lower you can set your standards because slowly and progressively, Chan was already failing to meet them.
The most you guys have ever been apart was maybe two weeks and even then, Chan had always made sure to check on you through texts or phone calls. So when it was nearing a month, and he has rejected your invitation to do something for the second time in a month, you were left to feel less than pleasant whether you had set yourself up for failure or perhaps did you deserve more than what you had settled for.
You couldn’t help but to be upset to some degree and even then you still doubted if your feelings were valid. You even felt guilty since you had promised him a long time ago you would be understanding. Were you wrong for just wanting a little bit of your boyfriend’s attention?
So when Felix brought you his breakfast treats like he would every Sunday because the boy loves baking, he could tell in your eyes that your world was seeing more than blue. You weren’t your usual self who was always welcoming and greeted him with warmth. The tone in your voice and your body language imitated that of a walking dead and although you tried your hardest to put on a great appearance, Felix could see right through you.
When he had asked you if you were alright, a sea of tears just came bursting through. Like a puddle that you had held inside for weeks finally being freed. You told Felix everything and everything. It was nice to have someone to talk to, for once in a long time. Felix had always been very understanding of you and was very much like a brother. He reassured you and you felt so much better after, that when he left, you even thought you might finally be able to get a good nap after some words of comforts.
Your nap was shortly disrupted when a series of loud knocks were ringing through your door. It took you a few seconds to process everything because your brain was still trying to wake up along with you. Then a beep from your phone was heard. You turned to the left side where you had placed your phone and noticed long notifications of texts and missed calls from Chan. Oh lord. Well of course who could that be at the door then.
Felix had only told Chan out of good intention, and honestly you weren’t even surprised. Not one thing said to one of those boys will stay in its origin. You crankily tossed your blanket aside and walked up to the door as you took a deep breath. You opened the door and it was just the one person you were expecting.
Chan looked totally out of breath, as if he had been beaten by a stick over and over again, you can see the sweats tracing along the line of his forehead down to his cheeks and his hair has gotten messier than usual.
“Chan--” You were cut when Chan just shoved himself inside your apartment.
“Why didn’t you tell me earlier?” He looked at you dead in the eyes as he shut the front door.
“Tell you what?” You weren’t acting naive but you just wanted to know what exactly Felix had told him.
“What you told Felix. Why didn’t you tell me that? That you wanted to hang out with me, that you’ve been feeling sad and lonely?”
“I did. I asked you twice if you wanted to go out or do something. You said no both times.” You defended yourself.
“Why didn’t you say anything when you were not feeling good then?” A worrisome look overshadowed his angrier look earlier.
“Pfft,” you scoffed. You couldn’t believe what he was saying. “Really Chan? Do I need to feel less than okay, do I need to question if my boyfriend even wants to be with me, for you to actually worry now?” you challenged him full on.
“What do you mean.” Chan wasn’t gullible, but sometimes when he gets too caught up on one thing, he misses another.
“Why should it be my responsibility that you act like a reasonable boyfriend who cares about his girlfriend’s needs. I shouldn’t need to tell you when you should be doing your parts. You were on the line of almost ignoring me for a whole month, doing whatever you’re doing without caring for my well being, and the two times I ask to do something, I get pushed aside. And you’re here telling me I’m not trying harder?”
“I already told you from the beginning, y/n, that I am not the best person to be in a relationship with. I lose track of times, get lost in my own thoughts. I apologize if I made you feel like I didn’t care about you. I do. Sometimes I just need time to myself, you know. And I try to do it without hurting your feelings but it’s hard. Because I care about you too.”
“I know that you’ve warned me from the beginning. And I’m a fool. I can’t do it anymore, Chan. I’m not the girlfriend you want me to be. I thought I could do it because I love you so much... but it hurts to be away from you. I can’t do it, Chan. Sometimes I just miss you, and want to be with you, but I’m afraid I’m going to bother you because you’ve already set your boundaries. I’m sorry.” you started sobbing even thought you told yourself you weren’t going to cry.
Chan quickly pulled you into a hug as you ugly sob into his chest.
“It’s going to be okay, y/n. We can get through this together. If you still love me, we can talk it through. You still love me, right?” he angled your frowning face up to his.
“Of course,” you answer like music to his ear.

Lee Know

Before you ever accepted Minho’s confession, you’ve been told by nearly everyone around him that he would be a handful. And oh Jesus, you wish they had warned you better, because he wasn’t just a handful. Minho was a pain in the ass if he didn’t try. Even before you got together with him, he found pleasure in teasing and making fun of you whenever he got the chance to.
But besides the assholery moves Minho liked to pull, when he was just with you, he showed sides of himself that only you got to experience. That’s pretty much your answer whenever somebody ask you how did you guys even got into a relationship considering y’all were pretty much like fire and water. The person who everyone else found to be a living nightmare because you just don’t mess with him since he has such a way with his words, you’ll find yourself questioning your intelligence.
Minho can either be the best person you’ll ever meet in your lifetime or as so he likes to claim, or he can be the person that makes your feet turn the other way whenever you hear his name. So you knew this weren’t going to turn out pretty when Minho was forced to be in a team with Hyunjin for game night and Hyunjin was losing every single point possible.
At first, him and the rest tried to play it off light heartedly, but you can feel the room growing sour each time Hyunjin missed the hints and was unable to score a point for this game of Charades that was suggested by the super innovative Chan, who decided that Hyunjin and Minho in the same team was evolution.
The others were having a blast poking fun at Hyunjin and Minho whose points were definitely not looking very nice until Minho out of a sudden, slapped the pile of papers onto the ground and said he’s had it.
“I don’t want to be in a team with him! He sucks!” Minho pointed fingers at Hyunjin who obviously took it personal by the look of his face.
The room silenced and everybody just stared until Chan spoke up, “Come on, just this once. You guys are never on the same team because you always want to change.”
“Yeah, because he sucks, can’t you see. Even a 5 year old kid would be able to score more points than him. We’re not even losing by a little. We’re unredeemable at this point,” Minho spit out without missing a single beat.
Everybody was growing uncomfortable, especially Hyunjin who had done his best to stay positive the whole time.
“Minho! Can you not. That’s incredibly rude. It’s just a game. Losing one night won’t kill you. How childish can you be.” You stared at your own boyfriend in disgust.
“Really now, you’re going to argue with me against this?” It was like he really couldn’t believe you were not on his side.
“So what if I am. You’re acting ridiculous and you deserve to know it.”
“Guys! Please stop. Don’t argue because of me please. He’s right. I wasn’t very good. Don’t be angry at him because of me, y/n. I’ll be fine. I’m going to go outside to get some fresh air, I’ll feel better once I come back.” Hyunjin excused himself and left.
You could only roll your eyes when Minho, being his stubborn self was refusing to go after Hyunjin and continued to stay in the same spot.
“How selfish can one be.” You criticized him before you followed after Hyunjin.
You had hoped Hyunjin didn’t think too much of it, knowing how Minho usually is. Being the sweetheart he is, he thanked you and told you not to worry. When you went back inside, the others notified you that Minho had already left and honestly, you could care less. He was being a d*ck and this time, you weren’t going to cave in. Only time would help kill that inflated ego of his.
About a week has passed and you still haven’t talked to Minho and vice versa. You knew that his diva ass would never give in, so you didn’t quite know why you were silently battling him when you’re pretty sure if you wanted to fix this, you’ll have to do it yourself. But you didn’t want to.
You’ve had enough of Minho always getting what he wants, always having the last say in anything, and thinking that you’ll always bend backward for him. It’s kind of funny because Hyunjin had actually told you that Minho already apologized, so why are you guys still fighting? Pride. Now it’s just a fight of pride. And as much as Minho has it, you have a lot of it as well.
It was the weekend, and usually you’ll spend your weekend with Minho doing whatever you guys usually do but since he wasn’t here anymore, you decided to just spend your day relaxing with a nice cup of tea watching Netflix. It was your day off work and you weren’t going to let this day go to waste.
You gently set your tea down on the little table to your right, about to lay against the couch when the corner of your eyes caught your screen lit up with a text message. You sat back up and struggled for about a couple seconds trying to reach your phone that you had placed a little too far.
It was from Minho. You couldn’t believe it. Reading what he sent you just made it even more amusing.
Stupid, are you going to apologize or not - Minho Lee
Why should I apologize. What the hell? I didn’t do shit - Y/n
Okay well I already said sorry to Hyunjin so I don’t know why you so pressed for. I didn’t do nun to you. I mean I know you kind of had a thing for him and all before we met but don’t take it out on me - Minho Lee
         This little shit, you thought.
Bruh. I never liked him tf. I just think he’s very pretty. Prettier than me. And unlike someone, he actually has half a brain and some human decency - Y/n
Okay we get it, you have a crush on Hyunjin - Minho Lee
No, dumbass. The problem is you always going around saying, doing whatever you like without considering other people’s feelings. I know that’s your personality and all, but there’s a limit between what’s okay and what’s crossing the line, and whenever I try to tell you, you never listen. Always doing whatever you want. Hyunjin is one of your best friend and you hurt his feelings the other day and didn’t even feel bad about it until someone got in your face and told you you were being a d*ck. I love you, Minho. But I just wish you would listen sometimes and be open to I don’t know... improvements? - Y/n
I’m sorry, I’ve just grew up this way so it’s hard to get out of a pattern. Sometimes I say things I don’t mean and sometimes I say things I do mean and then I don’t realize that my actions has caused harm to the other person, because I’ve just always been this way you know. Others have tried telling me before but I've always brushed it off because I am a stubborn person. But I care about you. You’re one of the very first person other than the members that I deeply care about. So if you’re telling me this out of love then I’ll take it into consideration. I know I should’ve been nicer to Hyunjin as well. Chan yelled at me for a while the other day, so please don’t yell at me too :( - Minho Lee
Of course I care about you. Everything I do is out of love, dear. You’re one hell of a nuisance but I love you. I know you grew up this way and it is difficult getting out of a pattern, but take little steps. I’ll be here with you. and yeah, you totally deserved that from Chan. Jk I love you - Y/n
You’re mean :( can I come over. We were supposed to go shopping today - Minho Lee
Mhmmm. Let me think about it - Y/n
Well you have 2 seconds, because I’m already outside your door - Minho Lee

Changbin
Tumblr media
Changbin liked to brag about anything and everything, whether that’s how many confessions he got on Valentines, to how many people who wanted to be his partner when it came to a science project, or even the amount of girls that would hit on him daily.
You never really minded because that was just how he is. And of course, mainly because you knew all those scenarios only existed in his head and was as real as flying fairies and pink unicorns. So when someone was actually blatantly hitting on him, Changbin wasn’t as knowledgeable as his bluffs claimed to be.
Changbin was one of the best from his music class, so good that the professor made him the teacher’s assistant even when the semester was on going. He usually talk tales of how many students usually needs his help when it came to writing lyrics or composing as a beginner. Interesting enough, but nothing major as he’d like to phrase it.
Then every time when you guys would usually meet at the end of classes to which you usually ask how his day went, he started talking about this girl who he’s currently assisting. At first it was nothing out of the ordinary. Just a student from his class who he’s helping because that’s his job. Even the first two or three days of his on-going blabbering about this student didn’t kick something in you until maybe the fourth time this week where this girl is always managing to squeeze herself into his schedule everyday. It shouldn’t have bothered you, but for some reason it did.
Especially when he’d say alarming things like “Oh yeah and she also asked me if I wanted to get a drink after class but I told her I have plans.” or “She compliments me a lot and told me if I have time, she’d love to listen to my work.”
Maybe you’re overreacting and she’s just a really engaging and kind person. You felt bad at first for assuming such a thing about another human being, so you gave her the benefit of the doubt because you didn’t know your dumbass boyfriend would be this oblivious when someone is clearly trying to get inside his pant.
So when you happened to walk past the school garden the following week and saw the both of them from your very clear sight, you were a little more than dumbfounded. This girl was not even trying to hide it at all. You didn’t know how Changbin was keeping his eyes to himself at this point. The outfit she was wearing was definitely very sexy and appealing. Changbin was still faced down, scribbling something on the music sheet trying to get the female to engage but she clearly had something else in mind.
You could’ve sworn you saw her hand trailed alongside Changbin’s thigh and so you accidentally let out a shriek, but quickly hid behind the thick white pillar, grumpily dragging yourself back to class in anger after.
After your final class of the day, Changbin waited for you at the bench near the entrance where you guys had always met up. He beamed with ecstasy once he saw you, but you quickly brushed past him and continued walking completely shunning his existence. His smile progressed into a frown once he realized that you were not in your usual mood.
He ran in front of you and blocked any further movements.
“Y/n, are you okay?” He asked with a concerning expression.
You didn’t say anything and only continued scowling.
“Come on. You know you can tell me anything,” He encouraged.
You of course, continued to be silent for a few more seconds because you honestly couldn’t get anything out due to how enraged you were feeling on the inside.
“You liar!”  you slapped his chest with literally no strength at all as your tears escaped at the same time.
“Wait hold up, what did I lie about?” He was in complete confusion.
“I saw it, Changbin. You and her at the garden. How could you let her make a move on you like that.”
His face showed that it wasn’t really clicking with him until he thought more about it.
“Who did I let make a move on me? Minji? I was only helping her, Y/n. Please don’t misunderstand. The class was getting really loud and we needed a quieter place, so I asked the instructor if it would be fine if me and her went somewhere else.”
“So you just let her be all up on you like that? She was clearly hitting on you, Changbin. How do you not see it?” School was no place to be emotional, but here you were, bawling like a little baby at the entrance of the school as Changbin tries to comfort you. You guys definitely weren’t getting weird stares. Nope.
“I-I’m sorry. I didn’t know you thought of it like that. Cause I didn’t. I just thought of her as another student that needed help. I’m sorry Y/n, if I made you uncomfortable. I didn’t do it on purpose I swear, because in my mind, there’s no one else but you. I know I like to boast all the time but I only do it as a joke because you seem to like it. I would never in a million year think of hurting your feelings. Hundreds of other girls could give me attention or like me, but none of them matters if they’re not you. I only love you, Y/n.”
His words made you immediately stopped sobbing as if your broken heart has been patched up.
“R-really? You mean it?” You pout.
“Of course, silly. I would never think about being with someone else but you. Never.” He leveled your face with his.
“I’m sorry I didn’t trust you. Just seeing another girl being intimate with you kind of tugged something in me.” you awkwardly chuckled.
“Aww. My baby was jealous. Not going to lie, you’re kind of cute when you’re upset,” He teased you.
“Changbin!” you slapped his shoulder in retaliation.

Hyunjin
Tumblr media
Between the both of you guys, Hyunjin had always been the one who had the upper hand in almost everything when it came to catching others attention. Anything ranging from looks, to talent, or even intelligence, you can admit he’s got it better than you do.
Going out to public places, you quickly got used to getting stares from other girls or even old Aunties who would comment on how good looking your boyfriend was, and how lucky you were to have him. They weren’t wrong, you were of course very lucky to have someone like Hyunjin who was definitely way too good for you. You didn’t take it to heart very much that other girls have eyes for him the way you do, because he’s made it distinctly known that he only saw you. Jealousy in the relationship was a bigger problem for you than for him at the beginning, because compared to him, you were not as sought after.
The whole duration of your guys relationship, he never had to deal with any actual threat or competition that he could possibly lose you, or that you would find someone else more intriguing than him because he was always accustomed to you having your whole attention toward him whenever he was in the room. So that was why when the opportunity finally present itself, he found himself developing a sort of ill feeling that he wasn’t familiar with. A feeling that left a bitter taste in his mouth, one that turned his vision red when he wasn’t a violent person in the first place.
You had been talking about this friend all week, reminiscing the past to Hyunjin about all the crazy things you and this friend did back in the days. Hyunjin being the amazing boyfriend he usually is, was very supportive of course. You haven’t seen this friend in years ever since his family moved away to another city.
He called you a few days ago to let you know he’ll be back in Seoul, visiting for a few days and wanted to catch up. How could you let this chance pass by. The person that was there for you when you had your darker days, the person that ran miles through the rain when you needed him, there’s no way you would say no.
Hyunjin was more than happy to accompany you to the Mall although you did assure him he didn’t have to, as you didn’t want to bother him if he had plans, but he was persistent he wanted to meet your friend and get to know one another. Since he agreed to everything, you thought might as well introduce them to each other.
But Hyunjin’s cheerful and optimistic aura rapidly changed into a stinging one when your friend ran up to you with a hug, and oh boy did your friend looked nothing like Hyunjin had drew in his head. In his head, he was a she. The person that was arms deep within your hug didn’t have long flowing hair, nor did he looked very feminine like he had pictured. He was growing some kind of hatred for this stranger that he barely even knew, and it was only solidified more when you would get so engaged in conversation with your friend, you would forget for a moment Hyunjin was even there.
The way you laughed at his jokes mirrored how you would exactly react to Hyunjin’s whenever he said something funny. He hated how your friend would sometimes pull you so close to him and you would just go along with it. Hyunjin literally felt invisible. This friend of yours managed to shrink you and Hyunjin’s year long relationship into what felt like you both only knew each other for weeks. Hyunjin could tell just by his body languages and actions that this friend knew you for years. And then he just felt like nothing. Hyunjin was nothing compared to this friend of yours, and he was mad at himself, mad at you, mad at him, mad at everything.
He was so tangled up in his own train of thoughts that he hadn’t even realized you have been trying to call him.
“Hyunjin!” you pinched his arm not too hard.
    “Oh I’m sorry, what.”
“Do you want ice cream?” You asked him.
“I’m good no thank you,” He answered completely uninterested.
“But you love ice cream, Hyunjin. Are you sure?” you tried to get a confirmation just one last time.
“Yes, I am sure.” He rolled his eyes as if he’s being pestered by an annoying bug. It wasn’t what he said but it was the way he said it. He was giving you attitude and you didn’t like it at all.
“Okay geez, just a no would’ve done.” you frowned.
Hyunjin has his days, but he’s usually self composed when it came to your friends. He had always been nice and pretty kind if someone was close to you since you were his girlfriend, but he was different today. He was hushed and soundless, not at all like the Hyunjin you knew.
“What flavor would you like, Y/n?” Sanghyun, your friend asked.
    “Mhmm. Any flavor will do.”
“I’ll get mint for the both of us then, if that’s fine with you.” Sanghyun looked for an answer in your eyes.
    “Yeah, that’s fine.” You nodded.
You were not too cool with the flavor but you haven’t seen your friend in a while and it wouldn’t hurt to just take it this one time, for him. It didn’t bother you too much that he might’ve forgotten. It’s been a while.
Hyunjin was beyond confusion. For as long as he knew you, you hated mint. Absolutely refused to eat it whenever he took you out, and now all of a sudden you’re fine with it? For him?
“But I thought you hate mint. So what? You suddenly like it now because he suggested it?” Hyunjin fired, as if he was ridiculing you.
For a second you thought you forgot to clean your ears, because you refuse to acknowledge that Hyunjin was actually trying to cause a scene right now, in the mall, with your friend by your side, in front of all these people.
“What’s up with you today, Hyunjin. Giving me an attitude when I asked a simple question and now this? If you have a problem, you can tell me. No need to make a scene,” you scolded him, utterly embarrassed by your boyfriend’s action.
Sanghyun looked terrified down to his toes just glaring you guys down.
“Fine, I’ll tell you what my problem is.” And without your consent, Hyunjin somehow managed to drag you all the way to the parking lot against your protest.
“Let go, Hyunjin!” you threw his hold off of you.
“What the hell is your problem? You made me look like an absolutely fool back there. How do you think Sanghyun feels now, seeing how much of an asshat my boyfriend is acting after all those stories I told him about how you’re the most kind and caring person ever,” you raised your voice, too irritated at this point to even care if anyone heard you.
“Well, I probably wouldn’t be acting like this in the first place if you had made it clearer that your friend was a freaking guy.”
“Really, Hyunjin. Is this what it’s about? That my friend is a guy? That’s it? I’m sorry but, if you’re going to act childish and jealous because you can’t handle me being friends with the opposite gender, then that’s your problem. Not mine. Besides, we don’t even like each other like that. He was one of my only friend back when I had nobody. He was there for me when no one else was. I don’t see anything else in him but the same guy back then who was like a best friend to me.”
You had hope you knocked some sense into him. Your tone turning from furious to more serious.
“I don’t care if he was your friend from back then or whatever. You have me now. I don’t like the way he looks at you, or act around you. I never act like that around any other females.”
You were this close. This close to just straight punching him and running him over with his own car. The person you were talking to right now and yesterday was the difference between day and night. You think that might’ve been the shittiest thing Hyunjin has ever said since you’ve known him and you were denying it yourself that it came out of his mouth.
“Oh go cry me a river, Hyunjin! When I was telling you the details of my past friendship before you even knew the gender, you were rooting for me, but now that you know it’s a guy you’re all of a sudden acting like a little bitch? Why does it matter whether it’s a guy or a girl?” You questioned his integrity, but most of all, you were just in disbelief.
“Fine, whatever. Suit yourself.” He sarcastically threw his hands up in the air in defeat and drove away without final words from you. Unfuckingbelievable. He was like a little child throwing a tantrum because he didn’t get what he wanted.
You didn’t want to leave Sanghyun hanging, but if you were to be frank, Hyunjin totally killed all the good vibes within you and left you with no motivation or energy to do anything else. You made way back to the ice cream court and simply apologized to Sanghyun on yours and Hyunjin’s behalf. He didn’t mind too much and only wished you luck on the relationship. It was a bummer that he was leaving tomorrow already and the only day he was free to spend it with you, your man child “boyfriend” had to go and ruin it all.
When you entered the lonely atmosphere of your hollowed apartment, Hyunjin’s well being did crossed your mind because he was notorious for being quite stupid, always acting on his feelings whenever he was upset. You never had to worry too much before though because it was only on rare occasions where his head would be so far up his ass, but you knew this time was one of those occasion. But you were mad at him as well. Never in a million years could you picture him ever saying those nasty things.
You settled down on the couch and eventually put your mind and body to rest. Today’s been a long day and you needed that nap more than anything. You had called Jeongin and Chan to notify them of what happened and to keep an eye out for Hyunjin in case, before closing your eyes and seeing black.
When you were finally conscious enough, the only thing that made its existence clear, was the sound of traffic outside your window. You may have overslept just a tiny bit. Rubbing your eyes to get a better view of your surroundings, you felt a weight on you as you struggled to get up. Turning towards your left, you found Hyunjin completely knocked out and slouched against you with his head on your shoulder and his arms around your waist. Right, Hyunjin had a spare key to your apartment.
He looked like an absolute angel that fell from heaven, almost as great as the day he conquered your heart. He was adorable and quite resembles a puppy when he’s not spurting all those hateful words. You needed to use the restroom bad so you made an effort to untangle him off of you but just as you were about to get up, a strong force wrapped you back down.
“Ahhh! I thought you were asleep.” you faced him with bulging eyes.
“I was.” He calmly replied, his arms still around you.
“Bummer. I like it when you’re peaceful and not so angry. You are cuter that way,” you purposely jabbed.
“I’m sorry. I really am. I wasn’t thinking at the moment and just acted on emotions. I’m really sorry y/n. I was angry when I drove off but when I got home, I just kept thinking and thinking and the more I thought, the stupider I realize I was... please forgive me.” he pouted and rested his head on your shoulder.
“Oh you big baby. Don’t try to bribe me with your cuteness now. You made Sanghyun scare of you and today was his only free day to catch up,” you scolded him as you pinched his cheeks.
“I won’t ever do that again, I swear. I’ll be better next time. I was just... jealous when I saw another guy acting close to you. It makes me scare that I’m going to lose you. I know I was wrong. But I just want you to know I’m sorry.” He said it softly but also with shame.
“Oh dear. There’s nobody else I love more than you. If anything, I should be the one scared to lose you.”
“I only love you, y/n.” He looked into your eyes and did that little smile that always makes your heart weak. The one where his dimples would pop out.
“I love you too, Hyunjin. Now let me go, I need to pee.”

The Daisy Oracle
Tumblr media
Pairing: Baekhyun x fem!Reader
Genre / Themes: Fluff, soft angst, a hint of spice, established relationship
Description: In the days leading up to Baekhyun’s enlistment, you find yourself dissecting every word of his and he’s been saying...all the wrong things.
A/N: To accommodate this anon request, the story does not take the “BBH public service worker” route. Dear anon who requested this, i sincerely hope this fic gives you the comfort that you seek. even though i tried to publish this as soon as i could, i hope it doesn’t feel rushed! :)
Word count: ~ 2k
You always had a hard time keeping up with Byun Baekhyun.
On a typical Thursday evening, when you, everyone you knew, and their families, zombified by the obstinate demands of the week, trudged towards the promise of an invigorating weekend, Baekhyun looked and acted like one of those puppies in one of those picture perfect 'family is everything' movies. Always eager. Always happy.
That is not to say that the weight of living eluded him. He'd have his moments where everything seemed rather dull and tedious but Baekhyun always bounced back quicker than most.
In the month leading up to his enlistment, when you'd hoped for your own sake and his, that he'd mellow under the soul crushing burden of an impending temporary separation, his puppy quotient shot through the roof instead. But you didn't have the heart to utter a single word that bore the abominable might to dull his sparkle.
Instead, you revved up your own. Or at least...tried.
He booped your nose and said to you over dinner one evening, "You don't have to pretend, you know?" causing you to flip the switch on him, "What would you rather have me do? Cry?"
Truth be told, you were mad!
Mad at the world. Mad at the laws of conscription, most of all. How could they take this...this...stupidly adorable, angelic, happiness shaped man with a divine voice, endearingly droopy eyes, jelly lips, plump cheeks, and the most delectable nose away from you for such an agonizingly long stretch of time?
"It would be nice," he quipped, looking into the distance as if lost in a deep thought, the faintly heavy texture of his tone nudging you out of your rueful reverie.
Head tilted to the side, you blinked at him, mouthing a confused, "What?"
"Hello! Earth to --! I said, If you cried a little...every now and then….it would make me feel - it would make you feel - "
These callous utterances of his would not only exasperate you endlessly but also shove you back into the despairing hurricane of emotions you’d been trying to quash for his sake and yours.
So you glowered at him in response and he quietly went back to his soup, leaving you to your musings.
Blinkering your attention to the sumptuous spread before you, you wondered why you struggled to push something that appetizing down your throat. Everything tasted either a little too bland, or a little too spicy, a little...unusual and not quite right. Which was strange considering the only reason you loved this restaurant was because they hadn’t changed their menu nor their recipes in decades.
You craved the comfort of the known especially on days like these when the world felt bizarre - inside and out.
“This fillet is too dry,” you whined, washing down your last bite of the salmon with cider.
Brows furrowed, Baekhyun drew his “No ~” out in a question.
“And overly seasoned,” you winced, persistent in your complaining while pushing your food around.
“Here, try the Gyeran Mari,” said Baekhyun, lovingly placing two neat rolls of your favourite banchan into your rice bowl.
Eyes locked with his, a smile teasing the corners of your mouth, you quipped nonchalantly, "You know what? I cannot cry even if I wanted to."
"Really? Why's that?" He inquired with a quirked brow, cheeks puffed with silken tofu.
Waving your phone at him, you replied, "All these airpod head comments online - "
"Yah yah yah!!!" Breaking into a fit of roaring laughter, he lunged at you and pinned you to the floor. Cupping your face in his hands, he kissed every inch of the exposed skin of your face and neck, making your giggles fizzle into a soft moan the moment his lips met yours.
.
.
.
"Leave the laundry to me. Go get your things in order for next week," you said to a dumbstruck Baekhyun as he felt the jute laundry basket that you'd picked out together over two years ago, swiftly changing hands from his to yours.
When you heard neither a word tumble out of his mouth, nor the sound of his feet padding down the hallway, you stopped dead in your tracks, turned around to face him and spluttered a mortified, "What?"
"No, no, it’s nothing," he mumbled, lips forming a toothsome pout.
Resting the laundry basket against your hip, you groused, "Just say it."
Soft baby pink lips stretched into a wide, gremlin-like grin, he teased, "If I knew enlistment would make your lazy ass pick up some of my chores, I would've enlisted a lot earlier!"
Feigning annoyance, you rolled your eyes in response and turned on your heel to rush to the washer dryer.
In a week’s worth pile of unwashed clothes, stood out a beige t-shirt that he’d worn for not more than an hour last week. It was relatively clean and needed a wash simply because he had no use for it in the following months. You buried your face in the velvety smooth fabric of the oversized garment, yielding to Baekhyun’s lingering saccharine yet woody scent. The dam of your pent up emotions broke loose at the last four words that had recklessly rolled off his tongue. You bit down on your lower lip to suppress it's quiver but the tears in your eyes gave it all away when you turned around to find him standing by the door.
You accepted his unspoken apology with an understanding nod as he nestled you up to his familiar, comforting warmth. And while he gently cradled you in his strong and steady arms, you poured your heart out into the crook of his neck.
.
.
.
Dressed in cozy black and grey sweats, Baekhyun stood before you, lips pursed, eyes wide, anxiously wringing his hands while swaying from side to side.
"So?" His brows shot up in anticipation of your reaction while you chewed on the insides of your cheeks to keep yourself from breaking into an insensitive fit of laughter.
Crossing your arms over your chest, you managed a feeble, "Looks alright,", feigning your best businesslike demeanour.
A confused Baekhyun’s gaze flew up to his forehead as he gingerly ran a hand over his head. Features contorted in a frown, he remarked, "Prickly."
Then you could hold it in no more.
Instantly convulsed with laughter, you crashed into bed while Baekhyun simply stood there, hands on hips, patiently waiting for you to -
“Let it all out!” He exclaimed loudly while you continued your antics, fully cognizant that the discomfiture in his tone was merely for effect. Baekhyun continued, “I don’t get what’s so funny.”
You threw your hands up and apologized, panting, “Okay, okay...I’m done,” only to break into another fit of giggles immediately after.
.
.
.
The room was bathed in a subtle gold haze from the bedside lamp as you lay resting your head on Baekhyun's chest, the rhythm of his heart calming the storm within yours. He brought your hand up to his rosebud mouth and trailed gentle kisses along the tips of your fingers before lacing them with his.
"It's not that bad...it's...it's kinda cute, actually. Makes your ears stick out," you whispered against his taut and smooth skin.
"I don't know, I feel a little...different. I've never been bald," he uttered the last word hesitantly as if it were some sort of a deathly curse.
"Being born with hair and all - ,” you remarked casually, cuddling even closer and Baekhyun instinctively strengthened his grip on you.
The looming presence of the words left unsaid magnified by the second and you prayed a futile prayer... wishing fervently for the time to stop.
“I wonder what our kids will look like. Do you think they’ll be born with hair on their wee little heads and have huge ears like I do?” asked Baekhyun before you could lapse into another silent reverie.
Your heart threatened to leap out of your chest at the incessant carelessness on his part and you only managed a dispirited “I...don’t know" in response.
“Come on! Humour me for a second -”
“Alright," you said with a deep sigh, deciding to indulge him but not without first bracing your heart against these beguiling castles in the air, "hmm.. I...I don't know but I want them to have your eyes."
"No!” Baekhyun protested, “I want them to have your eyes!"
"We're not having this argument again..not today." You tried to subtly release yourself from his firm grasp to fill your lungs with the air he’d snatched with promises so enticing that they made you tremble with fear to even wish for their realization but the more you tried to pull away, he drew you even closer....your darling quicksand.
He laughed, blatantly ignoring the embarrassment flashing across your features having been caught off guard by this unnecessary pop quiz. Eyes welling up with tears, you wondered whether this turmoil was some wicked sorcery of your own heart...or did Baekhyun, in fact, not care at all.
"But don't you think this house is a biiiit too cozy for a big family?"
"We won't have to worry about any of that for a while I believe," you muttered before lambasting him, "Okay Byun Baekhyun that's enough! Stop acting like you won't come visit every few weeks! And- and stop looking at me like that!"
Your expression softened the moment his eyes locked with yours.
Baekhyun sat up with a start. Brows furrowed in confusion, he guffawed, "I'm just wondering how someone this intelligent can be so thick in the head sometimes!"
Immediately sitting up to face him, you nearly squealed, "What do you mean?”
Shaking his head, he let out a deep exhale. Mumbling incoherently, he drew a key from underneath his pillow and lightly flicked your forehead with it. Chuckling at the very apparent bewilderment on your face, he grabbed your wrist and thrust the key into your hand.
Puzzled, you merely blinked at him, unable to form words.
"I bought the place that you liked,” he stated matter-of-factly but an unmistakable spark of excitement danced in his eyes.
“No, I don’t get it.”
“All that house hunting wasn't for Baekbeom." Baekhyun used air-quotes when he said house hunting and gave you a sly smile. Despite the telltale exhilaration in his tone...you were still pretty confused. Baekhyun and you had spent almost all of your weekends this year property hunting with his brother and sister-in-law. They’d said they were looking for a bigger place since the Byun family was to “expand”.
“But - I thought they were talking about themselves! I-”
“You what?”
“I can’t believe I fell for -”
“You walked right into it, Ma’am!”
“But you all made it sound so convincing!”
He coolly quipped, “A quality I would like all four of our future children to possess.”
Baekhyun’s grand gesture knocked the wind out of your lungs and you were suddenly flat on your back. Lying down next to you, he took your hand in his and sneakily slipped a ring onto your finger. A silent tear rolled down your cheek as all of the emotions that had been simmering inside you clawed at your throat rendering you speechless and breathless. Despite that, you managed the courage to meet his eyes only to find them brimming with tears. With his hand on your cheek, Baekhyun closed the distance between you and whispered, "I love you," against your lips before pulling you in for a deep kiss.
"I love you, too," you responded, nestling into his cozy frame.
"Yah! Don't get all emotional with me!" Baekhyun teased while gently stroking your hair. Voice down to a whisper, he continued, "I'm just getting everything in order...like you’d asked me to," before placing a chaste kiss on the top of your head.
You always had a hard time keeping up with Byun Baekhyun.

sallang; taehyung | 01
Tumblr media
pairing: singlefather!taehyung x reader
genre: fluff
recommended song: come on get higher by matt nathanson
word count: 2K
warnings/author’s note: this first chapter is slightly suggestive. nothing that i’d consider smut-worthy, but a warning never hurts! i’m also starting this as a mini-series, with short chapters and an overall short story. glad to be back!
summary: handsome, intelligent, fashionably late: taehyung seems to be a total package, and you’re all for it. that is, until his rain-checks and delayed appearances become so frequent that you feel left in the dark. what could he possibly be hiding?
sallang - a word describing the manner of the wind blowing lightly.
lowercase intended
this is a major waste of my time is what you thought as you rhythmically tapped your fingers against the clothed wooden table of a local restaurant, your knee bouncing impatiently against the floor, your free hand holding your head, glancing around in pure boredom. with how much time you’d spent staring at the wall beside you, you’d probably noted every color its paint compiled. it was your first date with a man from tinder who you realized was way out of your league — and you began to fear that he realized it way before you did.
snaking your phone from your back pocket, leg still bouncing, a deep sigh escaping your lips, you opened his profile once again. “kim taehyung, twenty-five, huh?” you filed through his tab once again, mumbling as you read. “likes reading, going to the beach… do you like being late, too?” you hissed, “because, from the looks of it, its like you get off on—”
“excuse me?”
your thoughts of innermost annoyance suddenly subsided at the sound of a deep, masculine voice from above you. your head darted upwards to find none other than kim taehyung standing in black slacks with a complementary white shirt to match, his chest rising and falling, almost like he’d run to your date. “are you (y/n)? i’m taehyung… from tinder?” his eyebrow pricked up as he finished his sentence, an embarrassed smile cracking across his face. you stared at him for a moment, taking in the man standing before you. (y/n)? upset at kim taehyung? never. seeing him in person, you’d almost completely forgotten you were irritated.
“yeah, that’s me. have a seat,” you smiled awkwardly, chuckling softly. you watched as taehyung hooked his casual blazer, previously wrung lazily around his arm, onto his chair. he sat down quietly, moving his seat closer to the table, adjusting his glasses and jet black hair. a moment of silence fell between the two of you, taehyung picking up his menu to appear preoccupied in the dinner menu. you smiled to yourself, catching glimpses of his eyes blinking rapidly as he excitedly scanned the text, a habit that’d already made itself known. you began to notice how he’d glance up at you every so often, chewing his lip, flustered, almost as though he wanted to say something but couldn’t find the words to do it.
“i’m sorry for being so late,” he admit, sighing. “i had something to take care of earlier, and it took a lot longer than i’d hoped,” he set his menu down, toying with its edge with his finger. “i...” he paused, “i apologize. i know it must’ve been inconvenient for you.” you took this moment to eye taehyung's hands, slender and dainty, his fingers long and adequate.
you laughed at his slightly frantic tone. “it’s fine, don’t worry about it. you’re here now, right? let’s focus on that. you wanna tell me a little more about yourself, ot should i go first?” you assured, smiling comfortingly. “your bio only tells me so much.”
“uh, okay!” he nodded, resting his hands on the table. “well, i’m taehyung, i recently received my bachelor’s and i’m aiming for a phd in english, i don’t care for coffee all that much, i love pretty much all animals you can find, and… i’m 5’11".” he introduced himself with detail as he adjusted the cuffs of his shirt, pulling them up to only reach past his elbows. “how about you?”
“oh, my turn?” you questioned, earning a giggle from the man facing you. “i guess it’s only fair. i’m (y/n), i’m pursuing law as of now, we can lay low on coffee if you’d like — i don’t really mind. i like going on simple dates, i love music recommendations, i love musicians, and i’m significantly shorter without these heels on.” you finished, content that either taehyung had a really bad sense of humor or that your finishing line made a better impression than you’d thought it ever could.
“does this fulfill your requirement of a simple date?” taehyung inquired playfully, lightly patting the table.
“it does,” you replied, tone flirtatious. you noticed taehyung eyebrow raise and jaw tighten at your response as he cracked a smirk, entertained at the shift in energy. that look jumbled your insides, but there was no time for that. you expelled those thoughts from your mind as you cleared your throat, silently scolding yourself. your moment was interrupted by a waitress, the same one who’d pitifully watched you poke at the complimentary sourdough bread slices with an empty seat in front of you. offering to kindly take your menus and your orders, the two of you obliged. as she scurried away from your table, a notepad with messy handwriting scribbled across it dangling from her waist apron, you turned back to taehyung, whose eyes were glued to you, one of his hands caught in his hair as he ran a hand through it. “hey,” he muttered, his voice deep, his eyebrow habitually twitching upwards once more. was he trying to make you unravel in the middle of your date?
“oh my god,” you laughed, trying to shake off how flustered you were. “you can’t just do that and expect me to be okay!” you joked.
“do what?” he chuckled in return. “the deep voice? i can’t control that; it just happens sometimes,” he smiled at his lap, looking back up at you soon after. “you said you were interested in musicians?”
“i mean, it’s not a necessity, but yeah, i find musicians especially interesting.” you explained, reaching for your glass of cold water, ice half melted.
“i don’t want to brag, but when i was in high school, i was in a band.” he grinned as your jaw dropped. your mind raced with thoughts of how flawless he was, from how well he dressed to how every secret of his made him ten times more attractive. “it was just seven of us, seven of my friends. some would rap, some would sing. i was a singer, and i was really invested in the group. after we all graduated, the group kind of fell out, but we’re all still friends. cool, huh? i would play a little bit of everything, from piano to guitar. more piano, though.” he added, tilting his glass of water towards you, his attractive grin infectious.
“that’s crazy,” you gasped, leaning forward in your chair. “ever thought of getting the band back together? you’ve got the looks!”
“the looks?” he repeated, laughing excitedly. “you’re giving me too much credit here, (y/n),”
“i don’t think you’re giving yourself enough,” you replied, raising your eyebrows, challenging his humble temperament.
the two of you dined contentedly, taehyung's charismatic personality and contagious smile catching you every time. the conversation, surprisingly, were never boring, they flowed into one another the way good friends converse after not seeing each other for a long time. his mannerisms and aura struck you as welcoming and comforting, as if he was a bright, warm light you wanted to step into. he was safety embodied, he was a simple, gentle man, with kindness and love pouring out of his soul. to your multiple objections, taehyung covered the bill, still feeling guilty over arriving late. a part of you inexplicably pitied him; you felt as though you should’ve at least pitched in half. it may have just been your morals being challenged, but you almost felt obligated to pay him back.
dusting off his trousers, taehyung arose from his chair, your date coming to a close. a wave of childish frustration fell over you: you didn’t want it to end, not yet! to your surprise, he glided to your side of the table, chivalrously offering his hand to help you up. you smiled and took his hand graciously, his endless good-natured acts perplexing you. who was this guy? other than being late, was there really a flaw?
as you arose from your seat, you decided the answer to the latter question was no. this was absolutely the best date you’d ever been on: he wasn’t obnoxious, he wasn’t boisterous, he didn’t ask you for anything afterwards… you’d been with your fair share of unforgettably horrible men. taehyung was different, though: it wasn’t that he was just more decent than the men you’d previously gone out with, it was his aura, his persona, it was something above physicality that made you fall for him more than you thought you should.
“thank you for the lunch,” you smiled graciously as he accompanied you out of the restaurant, opening the door for you as well. “this was really enjoyable! i hope we can do this again soon.”
“me too! thank you for being so nice to me despite me being late.” he returned your kind grin before grasping for his buzzing phone in his pocket, pulling it out to check an apparent text. “i, uh…” he swallowed, now visibly anxious. “would you like me to walk you to your car?” his tone completely different from his physical state.
“i’m just over there!” you motioned to your car, stammering, confused by his sudden shift in energy. “if you have something important to get to, you go ahead!” he relaxed slightly, thanking you kindly and pulling you into a warm embrace. it felt shocking, but not in a bad way — his very intimidatingly handsome appearance contrasted with how gentle he had been with you. should you have liked him this much on the first date alone?
“i’ll see you soon! i can text you my number on tinder later. thank you again!” he jogged backwards, still making eye contact before he finished his statement, where he then turned completely and began dashing towards his car. you found him charming and funny and it made you smile.
spinning on your heel to walk towards your car, you spun the chain of your car keys on your finger, the thought of taehyung still with you. he’d been perfect: good-hearted, humble, witty… you could go on. you sat quietly in the front seat of your car, thumbing the leather of your steering wheel. part of this felt very suspicious — how could someone be this perfect? how could someone be this enjoyable, this wonderful, this considerate? you didn’t want to feel this way about him as he felt wholly genuine, but you couldn’t ignore the feeling of possibly being lied to. was he messing with you? he absolutely could be. what would you know?
you'd thought yourself into a corner. suddenly, you felt very bad, sitting alone in your car in a silent parking lot. you closed your eyes tightly and sighed loudly, trying to expel as much upset as you could from your body. you’d just had an amazing date! you shouldn’t be feeling this bad afterwards. taking a moment to collect yourself once more, you started your car, dusting yourself off before driving yourself home, the scent of taehyung’s faint cologne lingering in your mind.

Mission Debrief: Chapter Forty-Five
Tumblr media
MOM FRIENDS MOM FRIENDS MOM FRIENDS-!
Okay so the chapter’s out and...it’s good! Nothing particularly crazy happened, which is to be expected since this is the proper start of the arc and Endo is setting all the characters up for more down the road. There wasn’t a whole lot of deep, insightful stuff to be inferred from the panels (save for one small thing that may or may not come into play later) so let’s just get straight into the review part.
Tumblr media
Anya is a whole damn mood, I swear. As @tare-chan pointed out, it’s funny how quickly Anya has gone from the humble little girl happy with mere peanuts to someone who can look at a free boat trip and go ‘eh’ (though to be fair that room really is tiny). Either way, seeing her get so excited with everything only to see their crappy accommodations was pretty funny. Besides, I don’t think they’ll be staying in their room all that much when there’s a goddamn circus on the boat.
Tumblr media
It’s supposedly a small tour around Ostania’s coastal area, which does raise the question of whether or not they’ll be departing the boat at any time. It’s also a little confusing as to the climate they’re in; there’s an outdoor pool with people in it, and yet Loid and everyone else are walking around in coats. Perhaps we’ll be seeing more tropical locales? If not, then likely all the upcoming shenanigans will be confined to the boat (which ties back to that something we’ll touch on in a bit)
Tumblr media
So we meet Olka in the flesh (though in disguise) and her fake husband. We also get a proper introduction to Yor’s boss, who I can’t recall whether or not we’ve heard his name before (though certainly not his title). I had to look up what a director of policy actually does, and it’s rather appropriate for his cover story;
[A] Director of Public policy is responsible for developing and executing strategic a government relations plan for their organization on local, regional and federal levels. He or she must also ensure that policies, legislation and regulation are conducive to a positive business environment. [source]
What interests me about that is he’s an actual government official- a very important one at that- and he’s serves directly under the Shopkeeper. That means that Shopkeeper is as much a part of the actual government as he/she is with the shadow government. How that all ties into Donovan and Ostania as a whole is still a complete mystery, but it’s safe to say Shopkeeper is well plugged in and has many resources at their disposal.
Tumblr media
Annnnnddd so begins the angst. We knew it was coming, though it doesn’t hurt any less to see. It’s particularly tough knowing Yor is still having these thoughts after just coming off the tennis arc. Even after affirming herself as mama Forger, she’s still torn deep down about being in a fake relationship with Loid and Anya. Of course, the look on Olka’s face tells us what we’re all thinking; seems like they’re more than just a cover family. Hopefully spending some time with her will make Yor open her eyes a bit to the truth.
Tumblr media
Also just throwing it out there that a) sport coat Loid is new best Loid and b) his pitiful attempts at relaxing are some of the highlights of this chapter (”rawr” lmfao). I just like him and Anya going around watching shows while Yor is out and about with Olka. Of course it’s all the calm before the storm, but I just want them to have a little bit of a respite before all hell breaks loose...
Tumblr media
...Speak of the devil.
Okay, just throwing it out there- thought he was Keith for a second. Of course it’s not- the eyes and face are different, but Endo’s got a thing for dudes with long black hair apparently. This may or may not be our main villain for the arc, though I suspect not as he’s likely more of an intelligence gathering role (think evil Franky). Very clearly he’s a professional given he could zero in on Yor and Olka’s conversation like that, and so early in the voyage, too. Now that he knows Olka’s room number, it’s only a matter of time before we get to see Thorn Princess in action.
Oh and, before we wrap up, that little thing from earlier-
Tumblr media
Someone else pointed this out, but it deserves a second mention because we all know how sneaky Endo is. According to @tare-chan (double mention ftw), another translation of this is "the lock is stuck", meaning that this could have been purposefully done for nefarious reasons. This also plays into the theory that our new villain might be working an inside job, evidenced by his having a complete ship manifest complete with all the passengers and their room numbers. It would also be extremely difficult smuggling in all that surveillance equipment without someone helping him; it’s possible it was all brought in separately by multiple people, but we don’t have any info to support that yet.
Regardless of whether or not this broken exit will come into play during the story, it goes without saying that this arc will be full of action and surprises. I can’t wait to see Mrs. Forger kick some ass...I just hope nothing bad happens to our family in the process!
Also, BONUS
Tumblr media
ANYA THAT BETTER NOT BE FORESHADOWING-!

You wrote your opinions on the Order of the Phoenix, what about the Death Eaters? That's another way of saying Lucius, Bellatrix, and anybody else. I honestly feel that we're running out of HP characters for you to write your opinion and reasoning about, so yeah~
We honestly are. When people start asking me questions about Harry’s nameless and faceless classmates I feel like we’re scraping the bottom of my barrel of Harry Potter opinions.
Though, that said, this is still a very large ask if you want me to analyze very Death Eater ever or even the Death Eaters as a whole (which is worthy of its own post).
So, we’ll compromise, and I’ll just look at the two you name dropped.
Lucius Malfoy
To me, Lucius is by far one of the more intelligent Death Eaters. He’s the guy who makes them almost look classy. I say almost, because Lucius is still a racist domestic terrorist and as the series goes on Tom gleefully drags him into being less classy by the minute (his house becomes a POW camp and housing for the dregs of society, Lucius just sobs, trying to be thankful he’s somehow still alive).
Lucius is rich, sophisticated, and is probably the most politically powerful man in the country. He has a beautiful wife he has... a son (sorry Draco, but you do not live up to your father) the guy has it all.
Which makes it very surprising that he got dragged into this mess. But you see, Lucius is paying for that tragedy we call youth.
Also, as a caveat, I’m about to headcanon hard and will not bother to get into the details of why I think x, y, or z in this post.
Ten years prior to the start of canon, Lucius is a very young man, probably very charismatic, certainly believes he’s intelligent and probably gets decent grades, but nonetheless the kind of stupid you see in men ages 15-25.
He’s likely chafing under his aging father’s strict guidance, knows he’s not going to be Lord Malfoy for years yet, wants to get out there, prove himself, and make a difference for his country. More importantly for Lucius, there’s this hip, exciting, new thing that all his cousins and friends are getting into called “The Death Eaters” (yes, I don’t believe the Knights of Walpurgis/Death Eaters 1.0 ever happened, I think it’s ridiculous that fandom and JKR does, I could go into why but not in this post).
The Death Eaters are led by the single handedly most beautiful, charismatic, man in Britain. (Yes, I headcanon Tom’s still blindingly attractive at this stage, because it makes much more sense to me but we’re not getting into that here.) A mysterious man by the name of Voldemort, Salazar Slytherin’s long lost heir, who has come to resurrect the wizarding world’s true heritage and purge the land of the muggle stain. (Yes, I do believe that no one, not even Lucius who is later given the diary, knew who Tom really was. I believe Regulus’ had only the vaguest idea, informed mostly by Tom’s use of Kreacher to place the locket.) This is the most exciting thing to have ever happened, the rallies probably consist of rich kids drunk out of their minds and maybe even high on a little wizard cocaine, and Lucius is down for it precisely because his father says “Lucius, this is stupid, please don’t embarrass the family.” WELL LUCIUS IS GOING TO EMBARRASS THE FAMILY, DAD! WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?!
And for a while, it looks like Lucius made the right choice. Things are happening, they’re actually going out and killing the mudbloods! Unlike Regulus, Lucius never has that “wait a minute” moment as he realizes that Voldemort’s actually far more efficiently eliminating pureblood families and sowing dissention in what was once a unanimous force among the Wizengamot (the other pureblood lords aren’t necessarily pro muggleborn, per se, but they get a bit queasy at the thought of blowing them up or Merlin forbid actually blowing up their own public venues wizards use).
And then October 31st, 1981 happens, and it all comes crashing down. Lucius has to desperately lie his ass off, having only the flimsiest lie to rely on, has to hand out a shit ton of bribes, and manages to squeeze his way out of being imprisoned in Azkaban.
I’m sure Abraxas looked at his son, with his tattoo on his arm that makes him another man’s slave, at the utter destruction of the Black family, and just shook his head going, “Clean up your mess, Dumbass Son”
And Lucius does to the best of his ability. While some will always suspect him of being a Death Eater, while some know it, he’s able to climb very high in influence in their ridiculously tiny community. Granted, I do think he messed up, and could never for example run for minister given everything (if Crouch can’t rerun then Lucius certainly can’t). He also shows us that in some ways he is not above the law, he’s very afraid his house will be searched without warrant in The Chamber of Secrets, and this is in part why he dumps Tom Riddle’s diary off onto Ginny.
However, he wields total control of the Prophet, has a seat on the Wizengamot, has the ear of the current Minister, is on the Hogwarts’ Board of Governors, and has his hands in pretty much every pie he can.
I imagine during this period Lucius grows up. He brushes the indiscretions of his youth under the carpet, gleefully leaving it all behind him, and the only real friend he maintains contact with from that period is Severus, the least zealot like of all of them. (Crabbe and Goyle Sr aren’t friends, they’re minions).
Don’t get me wrong, he’s still a racist slime bag, and I don’t think he really regrets the domestic terrorism. He just regrets nearly getting caught and putting his entire family’s security on the line. He witnessed first hand what happened to the Blacks.
And then the worst thing happens: Tom Riddle rises from the dead. He rises, impossibly, from the dead when Lucius has his own hand caught in the cookie jar.
Lucius has been living a life of luxury and influence while his great master, the man he had pledged everything to, was dead. Worse, Lucius took what was described as a treasured item to be protected at all costs, and not only threw it away but sent it to Hogwarts where it caused massive havoc and was ultimately destroyed.
And Lucius, I imagine, no longer wants to serve a master.
But he has no choice. And so begins Lucius’ descent into misery and hell as he’s given an increasing set of impossible, horrific, tasks in punishment that involve him watching as his wife and son are put through hell.
I believe Tom holds a special place in his cold, black, passive aggressive heart for Lucius Malfoy.
First, Tom makes Lucius’ house his headquarters. Oh, Lucius, you have a very nice, very large, estate? Why don’t you host your beloved, mad, cousin, her equally mad husband and brother-in-law? Oh, Bellatrix threatened to cut off your ear? Well, she’s just so passionate!
Second, Lucius is told to go get the prophecy. Well, this is easier said than done. He nearly succeeds but then it all turns into the world’s largest clusterfuck that ends in two notable things. First, the prophecy is lost forever, shattered. Second, the government admits that Voldemort is truly resurrected. Both of these things are very bad in Tom’s book. And the blame can easily be put on Lucius’ head.
In response to this, Draco is now given an impossible task that Draco is too stupid to realize is designed to cause him (and his family) as much misery as possible. Draco is to assassinate Dumbledore.
Likely, Tom was already informed by Snape that Dumbledore was dying. The blackened hand was too obvious a tell coming from too obvious a source for the pair to have hid it. I think trying to hide such information would have immediately blown Snape’s cover. So, Tom knows the man is dying, and doesn’t see fit to tell Draco this.
Instead, he tells Draco, “Kill Dumbledore as soon as possible or I deliver you to Fenrir Grayback.” Draco, however, is young and stupid, so he honestly thinks he is doing this to restore the family honor, earn glory for himself and for the cause, and is expected to do this entirely by himself. As a result, when Narcissa begs Snape to aid Draco, Draco blows them both off and only accepts help from Bellatrix because HE CAN DO THIS ON HIS OWN! DRACO IS A MAN.
This, of course, doesn’t work out either. Draco doesn’t deliver the killing blow, Snape does, but Tom decides to give him a pass.
Instead he moves on to his next plan which is making the Malfoy manor his torture chamber and POW camp. Even Draco, at this point, realizes this all kind of sucks.
And then Voldemort finally dies a second time, and I’m sure Lucius just stares numbly at his malformed corpse, wondering if it will really take this time.
So that’s Lucius for you, paying always for his mistakes, and pretending he’s just as much of a nutcase as Bellatrix to fit in.
Bellatrix LeStrange
God, compared to the novel that is Lucius’ ridiculous life, I really don’t have much to say about her because I feel like there’s not much too her.
Bellatrix reminds me a lot of the Manson family, she gives off those same vibes. Point being, I think even before Azkaban (while Azkaban certainly didn’t help), she was insane and a little too worshipful of Voldemort.
I guess I can start there, I don’t think Bellamort is a thing, at all.
Tom may have, probably did, have sex with her before he died but afterwards? In that body? Forget about it.
That said, I’m sure Bellatrix both wanted to have sex and is convinced she did have sex to produce whatever the hell Delphi even is. It just wasn’t with Tom, and probably was Rodolphous with a Halloween mask on his face as they got a little too into role play.
And there we go, I suppose, I can’t take Bellatrix seriously. You often see her portrayed as sexy femme fatale Death Eater, the most competent of all of them, if a bit of a sadist.
Oh she might be a very good duelist but she’s... Bellatrix.
She prances around in corsets, shrieking madly, and just what part of that is supposed to be femme fatale? I literally cannot take her seriously on any level. When I even try to write her seriously, in very serious stories, I end up with lines like the following:
"My lord, if there's anything you need… Anything from me, specifically, as a woman…"
- Bright Eyes
That was my best attempt. That was the best I could come up with. It’s still something that belongs in a comedy.
So, I don’t think Tom really corrupted her. I think without Voldemort she still probably would have been blowing up Diagon Alley, just in a much less organized manner.
Even in canon she does ridiculous things. For example, Bellatrix, frankly, could have easily avoided prison.
For weeks after the dark lord fell neither she, her husband, Barty, nor her brother-in-law were arrested. Bellatrix in grief and utter disbelief that the dark lord could ever do something so mortal as die, said “remember that other house our lord mentioned, THEY MIGHT HAVE INFORMATION, LET’S GO MURDER THE LONGBOTTOMS!” They torture and kidnap Frank, demanding he tell them where their master is, THEY KNOW HE KNOWS. He doesn’t know. They go too far and torture the man into being a vegetable. “Shit, GET THE WIFE!” They go get the wife, do the same thing, with the same results.
They now have no information on the dark lord, two well regarded aurors tortured into brain damage, and are quickly caught and brought before the court with absolutely no “I was imperiused” excuse they can give out.
How am I supposed to take her in any way seriously?
I mean, to end your life killed in a duel with Molly Weasley. That just says it all.

Hi! I’m curious: if you had to be the obsession of one yandere from each of your favorite fandoms, who would you choose and why?
Oh, that’s such a good question! I hope I don’t forget any fandoms. (Every time a question like this comes up, I forget all of my interests, lol.) I’m going to go ahead and include a lot of fandoms in this post, regardless of how much I like the thing itself. (I’m clarifying this because you said “favorite fandoms” and these aren’t necessarily my favorites, lol.) Boy, here’s hoping I don’t learn anything about myself, answering this question. Okay, in no particular order:
Harry Potter:
Okay, I’m thinking Newt or Tom Riddle. Newt is really good at caretaking, he’s soft-spoken, and I know from Les Mis that Eddie Redmayne is able to sing (which, in my mind, means Newt can and he’d sing lullabies). Meanwhile, Tom is powerful and, pre-Horcruxes, not too bad-tempered. He’s got followers, which is good for many reasons; he’s not sadistic like Bellatrix; on the whole, he’s a fairly balanced yandere with a surprising number of benefits.
Or Fred and George; they’re prodigies at what they do (They’re pretty much inventors); they’d be self-aware and fun as yanderes; and also they’re canonically kind of ruthless. Yeah, I think I’m settling on Fred and George for this one.
Twilight:
By the metric of appearance, Seth or Caius. But if I’m taking everything into consideration, maybe Demetri? His power has great yandere potential that would only backfire on me if I’d already escaped, which I probably wouldn’t manage anyway, since I’m a human. He’s high enough in the Volturi that I’d be safe from most everything, but not one of the main three, which is good because I think being Caius or Marcus’s mate would invite a lot of scrutiny from Aro (and he killed Didyme), and being Aro’s might invite sassiness from Caius; just generally, I wouldn’t want to get in on whatever bond they have unless it was a poly thing where they all cared about me. Also, I’d rather avoid Aro’s power if possible, though I suppose having him be yandere for me would be like empirical evidence that even my entire history of thoughts is attractive, which would boost my ego to an absurd degree. You know what, maybe Aro.
Then there’s also Benjamin, who has a chill personality, awesome power (especially since fire is the thing that kills vampires; being able to control it is like extra immortality on top of the existing immortality), and the innate freedom of not being a part of the Volturi. Yet, if he were to be recruited by the Volturi, you know he’d be as high-ranking as Demetri, if not higher. Again, safety. Demetri, Benjamin, or Aro, on the vampire side. (No Cullens, since they’ve actively provoked the Volturi and I don’t trust their ability to keep me safe. If Cullens were on the table, though, Jasper and Alice.)
Wolf-wise, I feel like Leah would be a really considerate and protective yandere, and since she’s the fastest of the wolves, I think she could get me out of most danger. Maybe Jared, since the only things I know about him are that he has a sense of humor and he can be SUPER manipulative (Like, that “Lee-lee” thing from Breaking Dawn was ruthless.), and that’s a valuable skill in a yandere’s tool belt. But ultimately I guess I would have to choose Jacob, since any of them would be physically unable to disobey him, even under yandere circumstances, so there’s no guarantee they would protect me no matter how much they wanted to. (Also I wouldn’t have to go through the turning process, if I’m with a wolf instead of a vampire.)
Final answer, Aro, Benjamin, or Jacob.
The Hunger Games:
Boy, I would say Snow, because I know he would pull strings for me and give gifts and stuff, but I also feel like he’d be kind of a selfish yandere. Like, he’d be kind when it’s convenient, but he’d ultimately be looking out for his own happiness. I love Finnick, but I feel like yandere traits for him would manifest too selflessly; like, I’d be worried about Finnick, as a yandere. Johanna “There’s no one left I love” Mason would be fiercely protective, but not worryingly selfless. She’d be clingy and spirited and probably beat some people up over me.
Divergent:
Definitely Peter! He stabbed a guy in the eye in canon! He’s got an intersection of creepy and pragmatic going on, kind of like a human version of Jasper from Twilight, but without the racial baggage. I get that a lot of people thirst after Eric, and Eric definitely has more power than Peter, but his personality doesn’t interest me.
Percy Jackson:
Percy or Leo. Powers and personalities are perfect for yandere. Nico and Will, if they’re bi; I’m not caught up on Trials of Apollo, so I’m not sure.
WAIT, maybe Reyna?? The confidence, the metal dogs...Yeah, Reyna is awesome, too.
Descendants:
Harry, Uma, and Gil as a unit. Just all three of them at once. They’re pirates, they’re already so steamy and intense about their relationships in canon (or Harry and Uma are, at least), and they’re all very attractive. If I had to choose one, I think Uma. Or Ben, since he’s a really nice guy with a strong moral compass, at least in the first movie (meaning a yandere interpretation of him would most likely become extreme in his morals, rather than corrupt), and he’s the king.
Detroit Become Human:
(I’m literally only making this a category because I find it unbelievable that any yandere Markus is characterized as, like, a rough and dominant yandere.) Markus was a caretaking android for an old man; he would be very loving, understanding, and supportive. His revolutionary energy is not turned against his loved ones. Nothing in canon suggests he would ever be rough with someone he loves. (Connor, meanwhile, is an android cop who is rough with his friends in canon, but lots of fan works characterize him as soft. Puzzling. Maybe uncomfortable, from a racial standpoint, since Markus is a man of color.)
Also, Ralph is the absolute perfect mix of well-meaning and delusional and intense. Ralph is perfect as a yandere. Why isn’t there more yandere Ralph?? I love Ralph.
And also Jerry, because he’s cheerful and there’s a lot of him. Just a thousand of this one guy, all in love with one person? Yandere gold.
Undertale:
Sans. Or Asgore. Let’s move on. 😅
Legacy of Orïsha:
Roën. Easy. Another pirate, with emotional intelligence and a sense of humor! Self-aware but with a loose moral compass. I love him.
Avatar: The Last Airbender:
Having thought it through, either Jet or Mai; Jet is a charming yet hot-headed rebel, and we’ve already seen what it’s like when he’s like when he takes his ideals to an extreme. He would absolutely flood a town for his loved one, which, now that I’m saying it, shouldn’t be phrased like a desired outcome, but we’re talking yandere here, so it’s fine.
Mai, meanwhile, would seem dry and casual while also doing the most. She would be satisfied with just sitting in silence, which is chill. And given her wealth, she might ‘gilded cage’ me. Then again, she’s not very forthcoming with praise or positivity in general.
Actually, yeah, just Jet.
MCU:
Listen, I really dislike Wanda in canon, but Wanda and Vision would be the best yanderes. Their powers, Wanda’s tendency to not take responsibility for her actions, there’s a lot there. And, like, she’s generally nice to people she cares about (and Vision is a Mjolnir-lifting sweetheart); she’s pretty much exactly right to be a yandere.
Maybe Nebula, since I want to give Nebula a hug and let her win at tic tac toe or something. She would fire the very biggest guns at anyone who made themself a threat to me, but one-on-one she’s so soft and frank and I love her.
(I want to say M’Baku because Winston Duke seems so lovely, but M’Baku the character seems too strict; we’ve never seen him with a loved one.)
Dandelion: Wishes Brought to You:
Jieun, in his good end, or Jisoo, in his bad end. Look, my friend got me into this game in high school; don’t look at me. Jieun is smart, psychic, very chill, and a king. Jisoo is practically the opposite. Both work very well as yanderes.

A normal day in the Luthor-Danvers house.
Supercorp, Kara Danvers x Daughter!Reader, Lena Luthor x Daughter!Reader
Word count: 1780.
“So then, I took my glasses off, and I swear it was not intentional, but my heat vision went off and I-I blew it right off of Lena’s hand. Man, she was pissed.” You smile and Jamie tries to hold a laughter and it comes out like a squeaky noise.
“Damn. Not a dull moment in the Karlena house.” She recovers herself and smiles to the ground while you consider what she just said.
“Karlena?” You furrow your brows, confused.
“Karlena, duh. Kara plus Lena.” She explains like you didn’t understand in the first place. That wasn’t the problem, you understood.
“What? Jamie, that’s terrible. We all know SuperCorp is like, a lot better.” You wave her off. “Besides, we do have dull moments. It’s not everyday we’re fighting aliens, destroying things or inventing things. Some days we just… Exist.”
“Oh, please. You three wouldn’t know what it’s like to just ‘exist’ if it hit you in the face.” Jamie crosses her legs and arms like she is trying to impose her thought. Sure, most of the times the things that happen with your family are not something people can relate to, but it’s not like you’re aliens… Wait. Nevermind.
“Excuse me.” You try to sound offended. “I admit we’ve been through a lot.”
“Mhm.” She strongly agrees with her head.
“But we’re still pretty much normal most of the time.”
“I think it’s cute you’re trying to convince me that, like I don’t know everything about you and your moms.” She gives a pretentious smile. “But if it will make you feel any better… Why don’t you tell me about the next ‘normal’ day you guys have?”
“Ok, mhm, sure.” You agree with your head taking this as a challenge. And you’re not one to back out from a challenge. “Next time we have a normal day, I’ll tell you all about it, and you’ll see we’re just another normal family.” As soon as your finish with the sentence, you see Maya coming at your direction and both of you just change the subject immediately.
“Hey cuties.” She says with a smile, and you push your bag to the side so you can make room for her on your lunch table. “You cool?”
You give her a nod, and a quick kiss, before looking at Jamie and thinking about the conversation. She wants normal? You will show her normal.
It is very annoying to you that it takes a whole week before you can declare one day as a normal one. And this is a normal day around your house, you know, one filled with dull moments:
“Kid, time to get up.” Kara knocks on your door serving, as always, as your wake-up call. You roll to the side, not getting up, wanting five more minutes.
And as always, five minutes later:
“Come on, babygirl. School. Let’s go.” Lena opens the door and you finally open your eyes.
“Nooo.” You complain, making Lena give you a soft smile in return.
“Yes, come on. It’s like this every day.” She doesn’t leave until you’re up on your feet despite all of your protests. “We’re leaving in 15.”
You do your entire shower-get dressed-brush teeth routine using your super speed, so you’re downstairs in less than five minutes.
“Hey, babyface.” Kara holds your face, when you’re passing through her, and she kisses your temple. “Had a good night?”
“Eh. It was decent.” You untangle yourself from her and go to the fridge. “We’re out of milk.”
“No, we’re not.” Lena’s voice comes from behind you. You turn around to look at her, all suit up. She has a maroon suit on, and her hair is tied up in a very tight ponytail. She looks very impressive which is normal for her. “Look carefully.”
“I did!” You answer and you see her coming to the fridge. She puts her hand inside and takes a carton of milk out.
“Milk, daughter. Daughter, milk.” She says ironically and you close the refrigerator door with a huff sound. “Eat fast, I have a meeting I can’t be late to.”
“You always have meetings.” You go to the table and sit next to Kara. “And you can never be late to any of them.” You pour cereal into a bowl, and then milk. “It’s like this every day.”
“Sarcasm doesn’t suit you, baby.” Kara states.
“It might not, but it does sustain me.” You open a big smile. You still eat fast, though.
Lena drives you to school. This whole driving with her started when Kara was still terrified to let you walk alone. Now, she’s a little less scared, but you kept getting ready on time, and Lena never said anything to make you believe she wants this to stop, so you just keep riding with her. Because having those 10 minutes in the car ride with her it’s good, even when you’re distracted.
“How’s school now that you’re back?” She asks while staring straight ahead, and when the answer doesn’t come, she looks back at you. She takes one hand out of the wheel, and pokes your cheek. “Hey! What’s more interesting in your phone than me?”
“You don’t want me to answer that.” You joke with a smile, and you hear a sarcastic ‘ha ha’ in return. “School is still there.”
“Baby…”
“I’m joking, jeez.” You put your phone away and pat her shoulder trying to calm her. “Everything is fine, mom. I got my grades back up, and everyone loves me now.”
“Yeah?”
“No, I’m just kidding again.” You laugh and she makes an annoyed sound that you decide to ignore. She stops the car in front of the school, and you see Jamie getting out of her mami’s momvan. “Well, gotta go. Thanks for the ride.” You kiss her cheek. “Love ya, have a great day!”
“You too, babygirl.” Lena smiles back at you, watching you getting out of the car. “Don’t break anything, I love you!”
You close the door and turn on your heels, rolling your eyes. If you had a dollar for every time Lena said ‘don’t break anything’, you would be the billionaire by now.
“Hey weirdo.” You catch up to Jamie.
“Hey dipshit.” She answers, putting her phone back in her pocket. “Did you do the chemistry homework? Can I copy?”
Oh, if you had a dollar for that too.
School goes on like it always does, and you can’t help but think that it really doesn’t matter that you have superpowers and a not-so-average intelligence. School is still school for everyone. Kids have pretty much the same problems, questions and indecisions. And you’re just another one in that sea of moody teenagers going from one class to the other.
It's great that you have a girlfriend now. And even if that still doesn’t feel like a normal thing in your life, you two have fallen into a routine very quickly. You see each other when you arrive at school, have a few classes together, have lunch with Jamie in the same table you’ve always seated on, and when the school is over you two steal some moments alone, before either of you have to go home. Today it’s no different.
You don’t go to L Corp. You have lots of homework and reading to do, and you also don’t have any idea for an invention, which is, surprise surprise, also very common for you. Jamie thinks you’re always flooding with ideas and that couldn’t be further from the truth. On your ordinary days, you work very hard and things still don’t go anywhere. So, you just go home and do your boring school activities.
“Hey, whatcha working on?” Kara asks, opening your bedroom door, hours after you sat down, and you look up from your books.
“Homework.” You take off your glasses feeling your vision blurry on the sides. Kara walks in and kisses the top of head.
“Why don’t you take a break, huh?” She asks, like she can see it on your face you’ve been here long enough, and you’re tired already. “Look what I've got you.” Kara gives you a donut and you smile at her.
“You know me so well.” You take it from her hands and eat fast. “Thanks, momma.”
“Come help us with dinner.” She asks and you look at your books deciding you’ve studied enough. You follow her to the kitchen where Lena is already cooking. “Look who I found nose buried in her books.”
“Oh, it’s our little nerd.” Lena chuckles and she kisses your temple when you’re close enough. “Did you clean your bedroom?”
“Mmm…” You haven’t, but you don’t want to tell her that. But then again, Kara was just inside your room, so you can’t exactly lie. You look at Kara for support and she shakes her head agreeing, like she’s giving you permission to say yes. “Mhm, yeah.”
“Ok.” Lena puts your hair behind your ear and smiles softly. “You can clean up after you help us with dinner.”
You huff while pouting, making both of them giggle at you.
“How did you know I was lying?”
“Oh, that part was actually really simple, because you see… I’m not an idiot.” She winks at you and you agree with your head. “Now, why don’t you help me?” Lena points at the top shelf. “Can you grab that bowl for me?”
“Why? You can’t reach it?” You joke, making Kara wheeze a laughter behind you, and it takes her a whole minute to recover from that. Even with Lena looking at her like she is going to commit murder if she doesn't stop.
“Don’t sass me.” It’s Lena’s response and you fly a little off the ground to grab what she asked for.
So, you all finish making dinner, and eating it, while talking about your days. And that includes Lena’s boring meetings with people who know way less than she knows, but still try to convince her that she’s wrong. Includes Kara’s interviewing various uninteresting people to the unexciting news piece that she’s writing. And your tedious classes, and uncreative ideas. The day is so dull, there wasn’t even any Supergirl emergency.
When dinner is done, and the kitchen is clean, they make their way to the couch, and you clean your bedroom using your super speed, so you can join them right after. The three of you just watch TV, and laugh, and exist.
If you’re being honest, you would trade all the kidnappings, assassination attempts, saving National City emergencies, to these dull days, easily. Because just existing next to them it’s so freaking good, you don’t need anything else.
