re lrb i have to re-listen but there's always been a good theme of exploiting other people's trauma in the podcast, what jon does in season one as head archivist (and everyone else before him) — interrogating people's worst memories and then filing them away as data while not offering help of any sort, which is what keeps the institute running (in a literal sense obvs since it's a temple to the eye but even before that reveal this is also just true in an administrative sense), is simply a corporate version of what he does later as a terror eating vampire. the apathy has turned into a physiological urge now. and ofc jon himself was exploited by the entities, because what was guest for mr spider if not a traumatic episode which drove him in time to the magnus institute in search for answers, and where he would eventually help fulfill the web's designs.

they're filming season two, but i'm thinking about the potential adaption of the mount tam scene in season three. you know, the one where annabeth could apologize for pushing percy out of the way and falling off the cliff in his place, and how she knows that sounds terrible but they didn't have time for another plan and she didn't want to lose him that way. but percy just engulfs her in a hug because he's so relieved that she's safe now and everything else be damned. and annabeth doesn't understand why he's snickering to himself after that last statement, but she melts into the hug anyway because she missed him. and thalia and grover stand in the background happy for their friends on the outside but internally mortified, because their friends are definitely falling for each other but fate may not allow them to see it through.

if Hannibal's manipulations were very successful, and so was his ability to hide his true nature. it all worked out perfectly...except--

Will does accept the darkness within himself. but he doesn't yet see the darkness residing in Hannibal. and so, he firmly believes that Hannibal, as the one and only person who had truly ever tried to help him, would be inherently tainted by being around him. and so he separates himself from him as much as possible.

and Hannibal is left there, bluescreening, wondering how he could have been so very successful and yet so...disappointed in how things turned out. and wondering how he is to fix this.

God, this issue shows just how flawed Bruce's treatment of Cass is, despite all of his love for her. He sees so much of himself in Cass, so he just can't help but expect her to be just like him and be disappointed because he always expects perfection from himself.

I mean. Think about it. Please just hear me out: - Both share a passion for manufacturing and dubious experimentation. - Both are VERY passionate when it comes to their field of work. Granted GLaDOS would probably find card games beneath her. She doesn't strike me as the type to play games to pass the time but I feel like she'd share P03's interest when it comes to robot production. - Shared hatred towards plants and other organic matter. - Both suffer from being far too reliant on humans (and they're both very bad at hiding it). - Both got torn out of their own bodies by their weird ex and had to spend an extremely long amount of time in a limited, reduced form. - Both got killed by their weird ex. - Very similar attitude towards others. Everyone but them is expendable and frankly idiotic. - Both very queer in a very peculiar way. i feel like it'd maybe start out as hostility but then they're like "Oh you got killed twice by the filthiest person on planet earth too?" and it snowballs into them being chill with eachother. There's probably a lot more other sassy sarcastic AIs you could clump into this crackhead multifandom robot friend circle but my head is a swirling emptiness at the moment so

The BG3 companions have the same energy to the DA2 companions to me. All emotionally resonate in a real and flawed way, and lovable (and/or hateable) for that. Beaten down and abused by the systems or relationships they were chained to. To the extent they either grow past their pain and anger to forge a healing path ahead or let it define them enough that they lose all perspective and blow their chance for growth (in the story). The messy queer and polam vibes may just be how I play both games, but that's there too.

However, while I think BG3's characters are inspired by DA2's, I don't think there's any 1 to 1 comparisons. Elves and orb contemplating mages are a staple of the fantasy genre; and Fenris, Astarion, Gale, and Anders are different enough that saying they're the same does all characters an injustice (imo). Fenris's slavery allegory is tied to colonialist power structures, for example, and there's a reason his skin is dark. While Astarion's slavery allegory is much closer to commentary on a criminal underground of sex slavery. Which makes sense with the vampire allegory too, because vampires (as a horror monster) often reflect anxieties around sex and sexuality. Nor are Fenris and Astarion like each other at all, they're very different people. If anything Astarion is more like Isabela. What with her deflective flirty humor masking a pain that's related to her being a 'beautiful prize' that was forced into a marriage at a (too) young age to a violent and possessive man that objectified, used, and tortured her, a criminal life of hurting others pushed onto her and it being all she now knows and accepts...

Hmm, maybe there are some comparisons to be made actually... 😅
