I'm a bit annoyed that people are somehow mad at historical costumers/dress history enthusiasts in the "actresses being forced to wear unrealistically restrictive corsets" situation. Like, yes, the knee-jerk reaction of "THE EFF DID YOU SAY ABOUT CORSETS?!?!" is unbecoming, and I've been guilty of indulging in it myself. But this time, I've seen a large number of people in the community- influential people, like the creators behind RedThreaded and Prior Attire -expressing anger not that Corsets Are Being Slandered, but that abusive studios hide behind a false perception of "historical accuracy" to justify torturing actresses.

To me, as a dress history researcher, the idea of banning corsets rather than simply getting the actresses corsets that fit isn't enraging because it's Corset LibelTM. It's enraging because this particular twisting of the past is being used to normalize unsafe/unhealthy working conditions, and to shift the blame off the real culprits.

I totally agree with you. As indisputably bad as it was for that one tumblr user to claim that it’s “white feminism” to say that a corset can be uncomfortable, I’ve seen a lot of people coming from the other side making an identical mistake to that person by assuming that ill-fitting corsets used in a modern film production (because the health and safety of the actresses are disregarded) “say” anything about corsets/stays worn by the vast majority of women in the past, or vice versa. The people making these movies generally don’t give a shit about historical accuracy, and even the costubers with the worst takes are not actually subjecting actresses to this treatment.

There’s been an unhelpful amount of straw-manning and overgeneralizing re: “the corset brigade,” where the most obnoxious opinions are attributed to anyone who says “it’s bad and stupid that this movie set in the Middle Ages has a tight-lacing scene” or “most of the negative outcomes you’re talking about are specific to late Victorian/Edwardian corsets, as worn by a segment of the people who wore corsets, and some of them are exaggerated.” Or mott-and-bailey, where you can’t say “corsets weren’t torture devices straight out of a death metal album cover from 1987” without someone going “oh, so you’re saying nobody ever found them uncomfortable”? Or assuming that anyone who cares about dress history cares nothing about any other kind of history. And then wondering why some people are overly defensive about corsets.

And, frankly, I don’t see the point, because I think most of us can agree it’s inherently bad for society to exert pressure on how women dress or look. (Beyond, I don’t know, requiring close-toed shoes in a lab or whatever.) A corset doesn’t have to cut women in half or even be uncomfortable for it to be bad that women had to wear them to be considered respectable.

Like, I don’t know. I shave my legs. I think it’s sexist bullshit that I’m expected to, but I’d still be annoyed if (in the miraculous event that it fell out of fashion) people in the future claimed that 25% of women in the 2020s died from blood loss or had to get their legs amputated due to leg-shaving. Or if a good chunk of historical films about female characters decided to address the sexism of today mainly by having the heroine wince and sigh while shaving her legs. “They criminalized miscarriages,” I (or my ghost?) would say, “and, even if you’re looking only at grooming expectations, there was a time when you were pitied and disdained if you didn’t wear foundation.”

I like to think that Vulcans who come to understand that Humans just can’t try to process emotions the same way as them, it’s just healthiest to let it out in harmless ways, decide that venting and stuff should be taken just as seriously as Vulcan’s meditation time, and will encourage the Humans around them to complain about what’s upsetting them

I’m sure this has nothing to do with the fact that andrastes mother was part of a tribe who helped the grey wardens fight and defeat dumat the same year she was born, meaning that she could have been a fetus affected by the taint in the proximity of a dying arch demon

And the fact that nobody knows which grey warden killed dumat, as seven wardens died from injuries from his death throes, and therefore we cannot actually identify a warden who absorbed his soul, means nothing

And I’m sure it is a complete coincidence that andraste had dreams and visions of the being later referred to as the maker her whole life, and behaved strangely, talking about hearing lost voices and seeing strange auras. That absolutely doesn’t sound like anyone else we know

I have SO many thoughts about everything and they are in no kind of order yet, so here's just some quick little bits in the meantime!

I am not normal about any of these characters!

Been thinking about how Bill legitimately had a horrifying reason (the literal progressive disintegration of the nightmare realm that erases whatever it disintegrates from existence completely) to move himself and his crew into a new dimension. Like that's terrifying. And yet he never utilizes this to his favour. He could have been honest about this with Ford, and you KNOW as long as Bill didn't mention plans of overtaking the earth, Ford would've made the portal for him, both out of Ford's own interest and because Ford when faced with these big moral questions will pull through. But this is a card Bill NEVER plays because although he needs to leave the dimension, he cannot lose face. He can't put aside his pride and admit to the humility that he needs to flee from his dimension, that he's not actually all powerful. And so instead he pretends to be a muse and when Ford figures out something else is going on, instead of being open and humble and saying that his dimension is unravelling, Bill focuses on that he's going to over take earth, that he's actually been a monster all along, surprise Ford!

And part of it is definitely because Bill's built himself up on power and violence and to grovel and earnestly ask for help, to admit that he cannot stop the unraveling of his dimension completely invalidates that; showing vulnerability? Can't do that, even under the guise of lying to get his way. And part of it makes you wonder if it's also a form of self-sabotage, because underneath his deep denial Bill is guilty over what he occurred; he sees himself as a monster and so he'll be that monster, and having people recognize that feels good in the same way that pressing a bruise feels good. But it makes you wonder what would've happened if Bill even just was open about his dimension unravelling and had lied about overtaking the earth.

It's also interesting because although Bill has SOME charisma and can manipulate people decently well (as evidenced by his cult, and pandering to people's desires with Ford, Mabel and Blendin), he refuses to be vulnerable, refuses to not be true to his off-putting self, even when if he was just vulnerable of pretended to not be himself, to put aside the (false) pride he has in himself he would've gotten a portal by now. and part of me wonders if it's because it's this false pride that built on insecurity and denial on who he is he cannot drop that mask.

i am once again thinking about Percy and Annabeth and their respective relationships with their step-parents, particularly how the other views the other's dynamic with their step-parents.

Because there's a really interesting subtle thing that we see which is when Annabeth talks about her step-mom to Percy, Percy's assumption is that Annabeth's step-mom is like Gabe. He just presumes that because that's what's familiar with him and based on his own experiences he assumes their situations are similar.

But then when Percy actually meets Annabeth's step-mom (and her dad) he realizes their situations aren't at all the same. He was expecting another Gabe, but instead he just found a genuinely caring family that was just struggling to find their footing with one another.

The interesting thing is that this implies an inverse - especially with what we know about how Percy and Annabeth describe their experiences. Percy doesn't really talk about Gabe ever. To anyone. Grover knows the whole picture there but he's basically the only one of Percy's friends who does. As far as we know, unless Grover told her at some point, Annabeth doesn't know about Gabe. She knows he was a jerk, but Percy out loud doesn't ever really get into details about it. She knows they didn't get along and eventually Gabe disappeared and Percy basically never spoke of it again. Presumably, Annabeth thinks Percy's dynamic with Gabe was like her dynamic with her step-mom, like how Percy had thought their situations were the same. Especially given we know Percy assumed their situations were the same and likely spoke about it as such if it ever came up.

Like. That's such an interesting tiny aspect of their dynamic that never gets touched upon. Annabeth likely doesn't know about this very core traumatic experience Percy endured before they met because she's operating under the assumption that their family just was a little rocky like hers was.

Since book 7 part 5 (the part where we meet Meleanor/Maleanor 👀) is coming to EN this month, i would love to see your take on lilia’s proposal to meleanor! i mean they were like little kids right? it couldn’t have been that serious…i think the only reason she even brought it up again is because she could tell lilia still genuinely loved her…(even if he didn’t realize it himself?) but, oh well! Let’s think about silly childhood shenanigans to numb the pain! ^_^ (orz)
