A Case for Bodhi Durran
Criminally underused and oft-sidelined, Bodhi Durran deservesâŠmore. More attention. More consideration. More love. While plenty of fanon exists surrounding his character - including presuppositions of what his life was like before the apostasy, what his dreams for the future were before the Riderâs Quadrant - for this commentary I will try to focus primarily on the text and evidentiary proof of his virtues. So, let's talk about how Bodhi Durran...
Is Loyal
âWhen you have a hundred and seven scars on your back, then you get to make the fucking decisions, Ciaran,â Bodhi snarls
I feel like all the Marked Ones who populate Xaden's inner circle have loyalty written indelibly on their hearts - loyalty to not only Tyrrendor, but specifically to Xaden. They understand the sacrifice he made then and the sacrifices he continues to make for them. Even when being loyal to Xaden means hauling dead bodies out of his not-girlfriendâs room at two in the morning. Or making clandestine smuggling runs . Or continuing to manage the operation in Xadenâs absence when the Navarrian leadership has begun to catch wise. Or when you take pains to ensure heâs left to his grief on the anniversary of his fatherâs death. Even when they sometimes butt heads over specifics, Bodhi ultimately defers to Xaden, because heâŠ
Is Dutiful
[Xaden] dips his chin toward our wing, and two ridersâGarrick and Bodhiâbreak formation, then climb the steps to stand behind Xaden, their hands at their sides. âAs it was a matter of life and death, I personally executed six of the would-be murderers, as witnessed by Flame Section Leader Garrick Tavis and Tail Section Executive Officer Bodhi Durran.
Again, all the Marked Ones display this quality in spades. Even if they donât always agree with the methods Xaden uses, they will forever carry out their duty, his orders. Liam represents the ultimate expression of this quality, but the way Bodhi protects Violet in Xadenâs absence, even going so far as to risk his own reputation and command by constantly moving flight maneuvers to protect her is an undeniable expression of his sense of duty.
âYou saved every single one of us here, cousin,â Bodhi says. âAnd weâre thankful. Now, Iâd like to do what weâve trained for, and if it means I donât go home, then I guess my soul will be commended to Malek. I wouldnât mind seeing my mother anyway.â
This speaks for itself. Both in the language of duty and loyalty, which only serves to accentuate the fact BodhiâŠ
Is Supportive
âYouâre our best fighter,â a second-year near Xaden counters with a quick grin.
Though he and Garrick (and Violet) share in this responsibility to some extent, I still think in a lot of ways Bodhi is Xadenâs ultimate hype man. Mostly because he understands Xaden so deeply and as such is well aware how much Xaden needs it sometimes. Heâs present for Xaden in difficulty. Willing to advocate for him, stand up for him even against the other Marked Ones as he does after Resson.
Bodhi grins, flashing a smile that looks exactly like my auntâs used to. âGood to see you up and about, Sorrengail.â Then he smacks me on the shoulder as he walks off, looking back over his shoulder. âIâll fetch the backup plan. Good luck.â
But itâs not just Xaden he supportsâŠ
When the Assembly wants nothing more than to toss Violet in a cell, he lends his voice to the arguments for her loyalty, her integrity:Â
She fought at our side at Resson.â Bodhi tenses as his voice rises as well.
AND
In another, quieter moment, which speaks not only to his naturally supportive nature but also how well he can read others needs:Â
âItâs a lost magic,â Bodhi says softly, appearing at my side. He rubs his thumb over his newly mended, scarless palm. âMaybe thereâs a reason this stone never worked. It might be broken.â
He can tell how thoroughly the failed attempt at raising the wards shatters Violetâs self-confidence and even though he doesnât know her as well as Xaden, he understands she needs reassurance, offering it freely. He also supports Violet in her burnout and when sheâs crazed after hearing Xaden was injured.Â
Bodhi Durran is a man who desperately wants everyone to be okay. Actively. Daily. Trying to not only keep everyone alive, but sane and grounded, because BodhiâŠ
Is Brilliant
The distraction Bodhi engineered in the flight field bought us time to meet without teachers noticing, but not much, especially considering that Devera, Kaori, Carr, and Emetterio are among those on campus still.
Personally, I would love to know what he threw together with zero notice that managed to keep the instructors busy long enough for Dain to call the quadrant to formation and Xaden (coughVioletcough) to issue his invitation. My guess, there were explosives of some sort involved.
Also, when they are climbing the Cliffs of Dralor with the fliers and the wyvern attack, he puts together what it means that the wyvern felt the pulse of the Aretian hatching grounds being reactivated before pretty much anyone else. He understands the wyvern will have relayed to their masters that the fliers and Aretian riders joined forces and the implications of such a report.
âI⊠uh⊠think weâre going to have to make some modifications on that harness,â Bodhi remarks as Andarna struggles to maintain her balance. âThatâs going to take a few hours.â
Without drifting into the land of fanon, itâs hard to elaborate on this point except to highlight that Bodhi has the skills and know-how to modify an elaborately designed one-of-a-kind dragon harness. Were I to drift into fanon, I would shout from the rooftops that heâs the engineer of the group - the one that made sure Violetâs daggers would work for her, who consulted with Xaden on the prototype and modifications to Violetâs saddle, who also helped design and proof Andarnaâs harness. Where Xaden may be the ideas-man in these areas, Bodhi executes. Heâs the one who fixes their pocket watches when they wonât keep time or helps troubleshoot why the damn trigger on that crossbow sticks when any of the Marked Ones canât figure it out for themselves. Ultimately, Bodhi wants to help in a tangible way because he...
Is Protective
In this, I feel itâs best to just let Bodhi speak for himself.Â
When Varrish confronts Violet on the flight field before her first trip to Samara.
âYou may leave, Cadet Durran,â Varrish says. Bodhi moves closer to my side, and the male lieutenant takes a step closer as well, the mage lights catching the signet patchâfire wieldingâon his uniform. âAs Cadet Sorrengailâs section leader, I am the next in her chain of command. And as Article Four, Section Two of the Codex states, her discipline falls to her chain of command before being brought to cadre. I would be negligent in my duty were I to leave her in potential possession of⊠whatever it is youâre looking for.â
When Varrish pushes Violet to near burnout.
Bodhiâs warm brown face appears in front of mine. âFuck.â He tugs the edges of the blanket closed around me. âThis is because of Andarna?â âYes.â Bodhiâs eyes widen. ⊠âIâll handle it,â Bodhi promises, capturing my gaze. âThis wonât happen to you again.â
When Dain Aetos calls Violet to the mat because heâs pissed off that she wonât talk to him.
âYou shouldnât do this!â Bodhi shouts as he runs at us, skidding to a stop next to me. Imogen isnât far behind. Ah, sheâd run to find the closest person to Xaden possible. Makes sense. âSheâs in a fucking sling, Aetos.â âLast time I checked, youâre a section leader.â Dain narrows his eyes on Bodhi. âAnd your cousin isnât her wingleader anymore. I am.â The muscles in Bodhiâs neck bulge. âXadenâs going to fucking kill him,â he whispers.
There are plenty of other instances where he protects others. Notably, when he steps in front of Carr to counter his signet as they are leaving Basgiath. And Iâm certain there are hundreds of instances we donât see since we are in Violetâs POV through the series. None of which detracts from the fact that BodhiâŠ
Is Principled
At the beginning of Fourth Wing, upon returning from a standard weapons run, he pushes Xaden and Garrick both, insisting:Â
âThere has to be something more we can do,â Bodhi argues, looking to Xaden, his voice lowâŠ
And then again at the end of the book, when the cadets are faced with a decision to fight alongside the fliers to save the Pormoish civilians or flee for Eltuval, heâs the first to insist they help. Even coming into conflict with Xadenâs more measured approach to the impossible dilemma Col. Aetos has enforced upon them.Â
âHow many people live in Resson?â Bodhi asks. âMore than three hundred,â Imogen answers as another boom cracks through the valley. âThatâs the post they do the yearly trades at.â âThen letâs get down there.â Bodhi turns and Xaden steps back, blocking his path with an outstretched hand. âYouâre kidding me, right?â âWe have no idea what weâre walking into.â Xadenâs tone reminds me of that first day after Parapet. Heâs in full command mode. âSo we should just stand here while civilians die?â Bodhi questions, and I tense. We all do, watching Xaden.Â
As much as I love Xaden, and I do. I believe equipping the drifts with weapons is a means to an end for him. They are the thin, brown and feathered line between the venin and Tyrrendor. He wants to continue helping them, but I donât believe - other than from an abstract âwe donât condemn innocents to deathâ perspective - heâs overly concerned with the preservation of individual Poromish lives. Bodhi, for better or worse, appears to be invested in the preservation of life in general. A grounded, guiding principle that thankfully he values because BodhiâŠ
Is Powerful
He sighs. âYeah. Second time someone tried to jump me in the bathing chamber this week.â My eyes widen as my heart hammers in my chest. âAre you okay?â He has the gall to grin. âI completely eviscerated some asshole out of Second Wing while naked and only got a bruise. Iâm fine.âÂ
I mean, besides the litany of weapons certification patches Violet observes early in Fourth Wing, Bodhi is just as skilled in unarmed hand-to-hand. While heâs never described as âon-parâ with Xaden (since Xaden spars with Garrick almost exclusively unless heâs trying to make a point), Bodhi clearly knows how to handle himself. In the buff. With no weapons. And accruing no serious injuries.Â
Which doesnât even touch his signetâŠ
âWhat have you done?â Carr shouts, running for us, his wispy hair flying in all directions as he lifts his hands. âYouâll end us all, over who? People youâve never met? I wonât allow it!â âBodhi!â Xaden orders as Carr reaches Third Wing. Fire erupts from Carrâs hands, streaming toward the dais, and my stomach drops. Time seems to slow as Bodhi steps forward and twists his hand like heâs turning a dial. The fire dies, extinguishing like it was never there and leaving Carr staring at his hands. âYou taught us well, Professor,â Bodhi says, holding his hand in place. âMaybe a little too well.â Damn. âHe can counter signets,â Xaden tells me. Well, thatâs fucking terrifying.
And though people have questioned Brennan's assessment:Â
âBy our best calculations,â Brennan says, rubbing his hands together to keep warm, âthe six most powerful riders currently in Aretia are Xaden, Felix, Suri, Bodhi, Violet, and me.â
When you consider the potential of his signetâŠ
Yes, he extinguishes Carrâs flames without blinking. But he can also smother Xadenâs shadows. Dispel Violetâs lightning. Destroy Miraâs wards. Keep Brennan from mending. He could have calmed Lilithâs storms. And while it seems like largely a defensive signet, there are offensive elements to it as well. Such as - and Iâm not saying this would happen - he could remain completely invisible to Melgren, even without the benefit of three other Marked Ones. If such a thing were in the cards, he would be able to easily assassinate Melgren, undetected.Â
And thatâs if we donât consider what, if any, mind signets he can counter. Can he reverse Imogenâs memory wipe? Or merely prevent her from performing one? Can he fool a truthsayer by offering them nothing to read? Based on the text, it appears Xaden is unable to read his intentions. Which would imply heâs impervious to not only inntinsics, but memory readers and erasers, truthsayers, etc.Â
Considering we donât know precisely how his signet works, itâs difficult to say for certain where the boundaries lie. Is it only as Xaden says, âHe can counter signets?â Or is he interrupting the channel between dragon and rider entirely? Which would have far more wide-reaching implications since he could theoretically also break the channel between gryphons and their fliers as well as venin and the earth.
Just like we really donât have all the information about Violetâs âpure powerâ signet, we donât have nearly enough hard information about Bodhiâs to say for certain where the potential expression of it may end.
Despite his physical and magical prowess, though, BodhiâŠ
Is Pragmatic
âI liked it better when we just delivered the weapons,â Bodhi mutters.
As principled, honorable, loyal, and dutiful as he isâŠsame. He wants to help, but itâs hard. And dangerous. And running weapons is easier. I donât blame him at all.Â
His pragmatism is reflected in the text a hundred different ways, but itâs also simply stated by both him and Violet.Â
âAnd I thought you were the most reasonable of the group.â I sigh. âLook, if I can help, then maybe we can prevent what Iâm assuming are⊠supply runs.â Talking in code is ridiculous, but anyone could be listening. âGive me a job.â âOh, I am the most reasonable in the group.â He flashes a grin, leaning back on his heels. âI also donât have a death wish. Survive second year and strengthen your shields, Sorrengail. Thatâs your job.âÂ
He is a man who gets things done. Which is not to say heâs not in touch with his emotions. But he understands the balance between necessity and diplomacy. Not that heâs a staid, stoic mission only guy either, because BodhiâŠ
Is Quick-Witted
âHey, I hate to interrupt whatâs obviously a moment,â Bodhi whispers loudly from my left. âBut that was the last bell, so thatâs our cue to get this nightmare started.â
AND
Bodhi wrinkles his nose. âWhat?â âYou smell like dragon ass.â âFuck off.â I chance a whiff and canât argue. âIâm using your room.â âI would consider it a personal favor.â I extend my middle finger and head toward his room.
Much as I appreciate and adore Bodhiâs quick wit, I could also write volumes about how his dry, sarcastic sense of humor operates as a defense mechanism. A lens through which he can deal with the intensity of his circumstances and the impact of these weighty decisions they are all making.
Like Xaden himself says, Bodhi always lightens the mood. To help himself deal? Yes. But (like Ridoc) also because he can tell everyone desperately needs it, a virtue that serves him well because heâŠ
Is A Leader
âShouldnât you all be in Battle Brief?â Bodhi asks, his voice booming as he comes up behind us. One look sends the other squads scurrying for the door.Â
Though a lot of space on the page has been given to Xaden, Rhiannon, and Violetâs obvious leadership qualities, Bodhi sprang from the same genetic line as Xaden. While the expression of the Riorson magnetism may be tempered by his natural demeanor, he possesses the same it-factor as Fen. Were I to lay bets, I expect his mother was similarly charismatic and it was expressed in her much the way it is in Bodhi.
ââŠFlame Section has the unique honor of being completely intact.â Brennan looks down at Bodhi. âDurran, you brought every single cadet. I guess that would make you the Iron Section.â
He inspired such loyalty from his section, they all defected. For so many reasons, including those already expressed above, I believe Bodhi to be a servant leader. Servant leadership rests on three pillars: compassion, character, and competence. All of which Bodhi has in spades. He would not run a section the way Garrick did. Or the way Xaden ran his wing. Not that there was anything wrong with either of those philosophies necessarily. But he would pull with his squads, encourage them, equip them, support them, and push them gently to be their best. He would need to make certain theyâre ready to face what he did in Resson, but he would do it with a deft, deliberate, more delicate hand than I think Xaden is willing or able to extend, because Bodhi DurranâŠ
Is A Caretaker
So much of what has already been outlined above also represents an expression of this quality. From him helping Garrick protect Xadenâs solitude on the anniversary of Fenâs death. To him stepping between Aaric and Xaden when they start throwing barbs about Alic (which is also pragmatism, because hey, thereâs a job to do). To him waiting with Xaden in the hall while Violet cleans up after Resson. He takes care of people both physically:Â
âWhoa!â Bodhi throws up one hand, the other clutching his rucksack. âI donât want you to freeze to death on the flight there.â He yanks his flight jacket out of his pack and hands it to me.
Bodhi helps Aaric out of his [disguise], careful with his blistered hands. ⊠âThatâs a rebound burn,â Bodhi says. âIt will clear up overnight if treated.â
âAnd tell Bodhi to track down whatever antidote she and the rest of her squad need.â
And emotionally, which leads me to the fact BodhiâŠ
Is Emotionally Attuned
An hour later, Iâm bathed and impatient as I wait outside my room in a fresh set of leathers with Bodhi, whoâs doing his best to lighten my mood just like he always does.
Bodhi reads people. Easily. He understands what Xadenâs saying without it being said . After Resson, he knows what Xaden needs from them - not questions, not reason, just action. He knows that Violet and Imogen need to run. And even when he canât contradict Xadenâs orders, I believe he sympathizes with Violetâs driving need to do something to help, because itâs a drive he shares. Later, he knows not to carry Violet back to the quadrant after her burnout. And heâs the one that follows her into the courtyard to offer his jacket because he can see the panic plain as day. Just as he can see her disappointment when the wards fail. He can feel Xadenâs rage and terror as Violet lays comatose and poisoned (not that Xaden is overly subtle about it).Â
On top of all of that, BodhiâŠ
Is Beautiful
Heâs handsome, with tawny brown skin crowned by a cloud of black curls and a litany of patches on what I can see of his uniform under his cloak. His features are close enough to Xadenâs that they might be related. Cousins, maybe?
âŠBodhi has the same bronzed skin and strong brow line, but his features arenât as angular as Xadenâs, and his eyes are a lighter shade of brown. He looks like a softer, more approachable version of his older cousin...
Even Violet, who only has eyes for Xaden, recognizes how attractive he is. Yet, as fair and fine the wrapping, I would heartily declare his character fairer still.
While this is by no means an exhaustive list of his virtues - he's also humble, adaptable, a peacemaker, a good listener, infinitely capable, empathetic, and hyperaware of how he should conduct himself in a given situation - I think the case for Bodhi Durran has been made.

Unexpected - Twilight/TVD crossover
Pairing: Mikaelsons x Reader
a/n: In this AU the Originals are far older than 1000 years. The cold ones are the result of a failed attempt by Esther to fix her 'mistake'. The Mikaelsons are the ultimate vampire authority but generally leave the cold ones to govern themselves.
âYou donât understand. Youâll never understand,â your cousin Bella yelled before storming out of the house, slamming the door behind her.
You clenched your teeth in irritation and sighed. You were frustrated with your baby cousin to say the least. She was dramatic and childish and aggravating. Some allowances could be made due to her age, but most of her bad behavior you laid at your auntâs feet.
Renee had always spoiled Bella. Likely part of it was because Renee was notoriously flighty and Bella had to do more than her fair share of caretaking which made her mother feel guilty. Whatever the reason, it hadnât done the girl any favors.
Your uncle Charlie, who had always been your favorite member of the family, had begged you to visit after Bellaâs asshole ex left her and sheâd sunk into a severe depression. One that was way out of proportion, complete with screaming nightmares and catatonic behavior. Obviously the relationship was not good for her if that was her response to a breakup. Cry, eat some ice cream and get your shit together.
And now Bella was starting to exhibit that same obsessive behavior with one of the boys down at the reservation. Charlie didnât share your concerns, just happy her attention was on anyone other than Edward. You bringing it to her attention caused the argument youâd just had. Fuck it. You were so ready to go home.
The house was clean and youâd nearly finished the laundry by the time a knock at the door caught your attention. You swung it open to find an unfamiliar brunette with a pixie cut on the doorstep. She was cute. Dead, but cute. What the hell was a cold one doing on Charlieâs doorstep?
You narrowed your gaze as you looked her over. âCan I help you?â
Her brow furrowed. âYes, IâIâm sorry, who are you?â
âIâm Charlieâs niece, who are you?â
âIâm Alice. Iâm a friend of Bellaâs.â
You leaned against the doorframe and crossed your arms over your chest. âOkay, Alice, Bellaâs not here at the moment.â
âCharlie?â She tried to peer past you into the house.
âHeâs helping his best friendâs wife plan his funeral. Which is where Bella should be but she went cliff diving instead.â That was more information than the vampire in front of you needed but you were still pissed at your cousin.
The pixieâs eyes went wide as she took a step back. âCliff diving? Like for fun?â
âSo Iâve been told.â You were quickly growing bored of this conversation.
She shook her head. âBut I thoughtâŠâ She trailed off. âCan I come in and wait for her? Itâs important.â
You sighed and stepped away from the door. âWhy the hell not? She shouldnât be too much longer.â
And in fact, the girl in question ran into the house not more than ten minutes later. You observed quietly as she reunited with what you now gathered was her ex-boyfriendâs sister. If you would have known that you would have kicked her ass off the property instead of inviting her in. Leave it to your idiot cousin to date a cold one while she was still human. They had notoriously poor self-control.
You kept an ear on the conversation while the two of them talked. Apparently the pixie was something of a seer and thought Bella was committing suicide. Several minutes passed before Jacob Black walked in the house without knocking. You scowled at him as he walked past you to look in the living room where the girls were talking.
Seriously? You knew he was a dog but did he need to have the manners of one? The phone rang, pulling you from your thoughts. Before you could answer, Jake grabbed it. âYeah? No, heâs not here. Heâs planning a funeral.â And he hung up the phone.
âWho was that? Was that Edward? Why didnât you let me talk to him?â Bella yelled as she stomped into the room.
âHe didnât ask for you,â the wolf snarked.
That was it. You were completely done with your cousin and all of her friends. Youâd stay until after Harryâs funeral strictly for Charlieâs benefit and then you were heading home. A gasp drew your attention to the pixie like vampire.
âWhat? What is it?â Bella suddenly sounded far more worried than she had a moment ago.
âItâs Edward. He thinks youâre dead. Heâs going to the Volturi and asking them to kill him.â
You rolled your eyes. For fuckâs sake. He was as dramatic as your cousin. Maybe they deserved each other after all.
âWe have to go. I have to save him,â Bella said as she moved toward the door.
You blocked her way. âReally, Bella? Charlie just lost his best friend and now youâre going to take off after a boy that doesnât give a shit about you instead of being here for your father?â
Your cousinâs lip lifted in a sneer as she pushed against your chest. You held your ground and glared at her.
âYou donât know anything. He left to save me, to protect me. He thinks heâs not good enough for me.â
âHeâs not.â Jacob smirked while Alice sent you a nasty look. You lifted a brow and ran your eyes over the boy who stupidly thought heâd won something with your words. âNeither are you, furball.â
âLook,â Bella stated, reclaiming your attention. âIâm going to Italy whether you like it or not. Tell Charlie Iâm sorry.â
You sighed. âItaly? Do you even have a passport?â
She nodded once. âMom insisted.â
Fucking Renee. âThen Iâm going with you. Write your dad a note.â
Bella shook her head. âThatâs not a good idea. You should stay here.â
Alice laid a hand on your cousinâs arm. âNo, Bella. I think itâs a great idea.â
You eyed the cold one wondering what plot she was concocting. Your fingers flew over the screen of your phone sending multiple texts as you followed the girls to the car.
***
As it turned out, youâd arrived just in time to stop Edward from revealing himself in the middle of the town square. Because he thought heâd be justified in putting his entire race at risk to get what he wanted. Asshole.
You leaned against the wall, responding to another text as you watched the interaction between the Volturi guards and the Cullens. You honestly didnât care much about their politicking as long as your cousin remained alive-ish. You didnât want Charlie heartbroken over the loss of his only child.
When you glanced up again, Demetriâs gaze met yours. He gave a little smirk and lifted a brow in question. Youâd met him once and the two of you had gotten along famously. The compulsion to forget you was lifted now that he was once again in your presence. You shrugged and sent him a little wave as you slid your phone into your pocket.
Edward watched the exchange with narrowed eyes. âListen, she doesnât know anything about this. She just came along with Bella. You should let them both go.â
âOh, I donât know,â Demetri said as he looked you over. âWhat do you say, bellisima? Do you know anything?â
âI know about a great many things,â you answered.
âSee? She knows things.â
âThey come with us. Both of them,â Jane stated.
Edward grabbed your upper arm in a bruising grip and jerked you into his side. âDonât be stupid,â he hissed.
âNo. Thatâs your job and if you donât release me immediately, Iâm going to tear your arm off and beat you with it while you sparkle in the sun.â
His grip loosened in shock and you pulled away. âSee? I do know things.â
Demetri laughed as he steered you to follow the others.
You grinned. âThis one likes me, Eddie. Donât be so grumpy.â
âYou shouldnât be happy they like you,â Bella snapped. âTheyâre evil.â
You blinked at the back of her head. âYouâre an idiot.â Personal feelings aside, why the hell was she announcing her opinions about the Volturi?
When you arrived at the throne room, Demetri gestured for you to stand to the side near the back. You gave him a nod and watched the proceedings in silence, simply taking everything in unless you needed to intervene.
After reading the Cullens and attempting to read Bella, Aro Volturi turned his attention to you. He hadnât missed your interaction with one of his elite guards and, other than their dislike, heâd been able to get little from the Cullens about you. âAnd who might you be, my dear?â he asked with a spark of interest shining in his eyes.
He held out a hand fully expecting you to take it, when your phone dinged with an incoming text. You put up a finger telling him to wait a moment while you pulled it out to respond. Aro blinked in disbelief as the other two kings shifted on their thrones in annoyance.
âAre we boring you, human?â Caius asked.
You glanced at him as your phone rang. You answered without looking at the screen and passed it to Aro. âItâs for you.â
The room was quiet save for some sounds of agreement from the raven haired king and a final âI understand,â before he ended the call and handed your phone back to you. He smiled before turning back to your cousin and the Cullens as if nothing had happened. âNow, what to do with young Bella and more importantly the Cullens for violating our most sacred laws.â
Caiusâ gaze shifted between you and Aro. âYou already know what youâre going to do. Get on with it.â
âI assure you that we had no intention of violating any laws. Bella will be one of us. Iâll change her myself,â Alice said holding out a hand.
You huffed a laugh. âHe has no intention of changing her. The pixie might but not soulless here.â
Bella spun to face you, her hands fisted at her sides. âWhat the hell is wrong with you? Youâre my cousin. Youâre supposed to be on my side.â
âBella, shut up.â Ignoring Bellaâs offended expression, you held your hand out for Aro. âSee for yourself.â Leaving your cousin alone in the woods with all her knowledge intact while they took off with no intention to return didnât speak well for any of the Cullens.
Aro gently took your hand in his and read the memories you allowed him access to. Before he even had a chance to release you, the doors to the throne room flew open. A blur flashed across the room until it came to a stop between you and the Volturi king.
Your view was suddenly full of the back of a finely tailored suit. âYou dare?â came the familiar baritone and you smiled at being in his presence again regardless of the circumstances.
You placed a hand on Elijah and he turned to look at you. âI asked him to.â
The look your mate leveled on you was entirely unimpressed. You knew better than to invite anyone into your brain without good reason.
âI assure you, I meant no harm,â Aro said. âI already spoke with Niklaus.â
Elijah hummed in thought as he looked from you to the king. Finally he looked past him to the other two, giving them a nod in greeting. âA pleasure, as always.â
âElijah,â Marcus returned with a nod. âIâm afraid you have us at a loss. Aro was the only one to speak with your brother.â
âAh,â the Original said in understanding. He stepped aside and placed his hand on your back to pull you to stand beside him. âIn that case, allow me to introduce my mate.â
A slight widening of the eyes was the only indication of the kingsâ surprise.
Apparently annoyed at having been forgotten, Edward spoke up. âIâm sorry, but can someone fill us in? The thoughts are too chaotic to follow and I canât read either of them at all.â
âYouâre a rude thing, arenât you?â you said. âQuit digging in peopleâs brains without their permission.â
âItâs not like I can control it.â
âLiar.â
Elijah glanced at you. âI take it this is the boy that left your cousin in the woods to be eaten by wolves?â
You nod in answer. âEdward Cullen and his sister Alice.â
Elijah shifted his attention in surprise. âCullen? I know Carlisle though itâs been a while. Is Jasper still with your coven?â
âHow do you know Jazzy?â Alice asked.
âHow remiss of me,â Aro interjected. âAllow me to introduce Elijah Mikaelson.â
Edwardâs eyes snapped to you and his sister looked a little sick. âYouâre mated to a Mikaelson?â
âDonât be ridiculous, Eddie boy. Iâm mated to all of them.â
Aro giggled. âWhich means sheâs the most protected and deadliest woman on the planet. And sheâs rather displeased with you, dear Edward.â
Bella scoffed. âHer? As if. Sheâs nobody. Always has been. Always will be.â
Edward pulled her back into his chest. âShut up, Bella.â
When she started to protest, he covered her mouth with his hand. His gaze shifted between you and your mate. âI assure you, I was only doing what I thought best for Bella. I will always do whatâs best for Bella.â
âAnd you think thatâs you?â Elijah asked.
Edward shook his head. âNo, but it seems I donât have much of a choice.â
You looked at Aro. The Volturi were in charge of the cold ones. It had been that way for thousands of years. Your mates didnât get involved unless they were asked. âI donât like him, but he has a point. She graduates in May.â
Aro nodded slowly. âVery well. We expect her to be turned within a week of her graduation. Until then you may go.â He waved them away, no longer interested in the Cullens and their pet.
âOh, Cullens,â Caius called, stopping them at the door. âShould you fail, it wonât be us you answer to.â
Edward shot another glance in your direction before giving a nod and dragging Bella through the doors, his hand still firmly covering her lips.

Loving Arms (5)
Summary: The children of Viserys I from his wife Alicent Hightower had always been lacking in affection from their parents. They simply didn't realize how much until their widowed aunt was brought into their lives. (AU where Alicent has an older sister and her kids get the love that they deserve, takes place some time after the Driftmark event)
Part V - Setting an Example
|| Loving Arms Masterlist ||
A/N: I meant to post this to celebrate Matt's b-day, but I forgot that we share a birthday đ€Ł and I got caught up with other stuff, but I hope you all still enjoyed it. Don't forget to comment!
Divider credit: @saradika
Sit still and look pretty.
It was one of the first lessons that (Y/N) Hightower (nee Martell) remembers receiving when she was still a young girl; receiving her lessons and instructions from the Septa, her Mother, and additionally her Father. It was a simple enough thing to follow, even at the tender age of four, when it was just she and her older brother Gwayne that took their lessons together.
But losing their mother, Otto leaving she and her brother behind in Oldtown, and being disfigured by the age of seven.
Sit still and look pretty, didn't hold as equal of a weight as it used to.
When her Septa tried to recite that same lesson again after all of those things happened, it would be the first time of many in which (Y/N) chose to talk and fight back against the rules that they tried to place upon her.
In fact, it was truly a change for her life when the Septa brought the girl to her Uncle Hobert and Aunt Lynesse expecting that the couple would agree that this was a lesson that she needed to take to heart, only for the Septa to be dismissed. Instead the Hightower couple would teach her a different lesson that she would apply for the rest of her life.
Sit still, listen, and prove every bastard wrong.
Never would the eldest daughter of Otto Hightower believe in her entire life that the uncle and aunt who were as equally traditional to the same values of her father, would teach her to break the norms and expectations that had been long since been established in the family.
A lesson and many more that were never told to her Father, in every letter written to his younger brother, Hobert Hightower would praise her progress in the things she was taught but never specified that the girl was learning alongside Gwayne to one day take over the leadership of a house.
Whether it was that of house Hightower or another.
The discussion between Viserys and (Y/N) was one that was quite overdue, because despite having met before when his children were quite young, neither had much to talk with one another back then. When she left the room, there were a few things that Viserys had conceded and signed in agreement, so she was ultimately satisfied with the uprooting of some of the things that they had come to agree.
Walking out of Viserys' study, she decided to seek out the children for a moment of reprieve considering that discussing with the Targaryen King had felt taxing on her patience. She left the room without a glance to the guard that had almost impeded her discussion with the King and instead left with quick strides to hopefully find the children enjoying themselves in the garden or training yards, as she had been adamant to make sure every last tutor that had originally been employed was gone.
It wasn't long before the elder Hightower was able to find her nephews and niece exactly where she had assumed they would be. Halaena was happily sprawled in the grass and leaning to look at some variant of bug that she must have found, Aemond sat on the stone bench by her and was reading a tome in Valyrian, and Aegon was surprisingly sitting contently beside his sister eating a cookie from the satchel in his lap.
"Well is this not the most pleasant sight?" she laughed. "Last I heard, the three of you could rarely stand to be in the presence of one another."
"We were waiting for you, muña" Halaena looked up. "You took quite a while and we thought it would be more pleasant to wait here in the garden."
"Neither Halaena or I believed when Aegon first told us that our tutors and the septas had been relieved of their positions. But this has felt like the longest day of my life" Aemond pouted. "It has been positively dull!"
"Well I am not one to complain," Aegon grinned and offered up his satchel of snacks. "It has been pleasant to enjoy the gardens without anyone to nag."
Their muña happily took a cookie from Aegon's satchel and plopped herself tiredly on the grass, "I figured that there would be a mix of reactions from the three of you but things had to be put in order." She looked between them, "I sought an audience with his graceful Majesty, King Viserys the Peaceful and had some things put into writing and sealed."
The children looked at her in surprise and uncertainty of what this could possibly mean for all of them.
"Might we inquire as to what those things are?" Aemond asked while setting aside his tome.
She hummed in thought, "Well I see no harm in all of you knowing. After all, it pertains to your futures and much of how things will be going forward."
She waved the children closer and hesitantly all three inched forward until they sat in front of her. "Due to the graciousness of the King, from this day until you are all married, I have become your caretaker of sorts. It has been decreed Halaena and Aegon will no longer be married."
The two were ecstatic and threw their arms around their lovely muña, whispering their rushed and tearful thank you's, one of their great fears would never come to be. With soft assurances from their aunt, Halaena and Aegon hesitantly pulled away while wiping away their tears.
"How did you get our Father to agree, muña?" Aegon sniffled.
"Ah," she laughed. "Never underestimate the stubborness of a woman willing to take risks. Often times, it is better to sit at the table, listen to what is said, and do all that you are capable of proving that something can be done."
"But I imagine that there is more, isn't there?" said Aemond.
"Plenty more, but it is perhaps better if I were to summarize it all" she said but the clattering sound of armor made her turn.
Ser Criston Cole approached the group, a frown marred his features and hesitantly the man gave a short bow when he stood before them. "I apologize for the interruption, but I came to seek out the young princes for their training only for a servant to tell me that their lessons had been dismissed."
The Targaryen children's muña stared at the man with a curious look, "Dornish man, are you?"
"I beg your pardon, my lady?"
"Your family hails from Dorne, do they not? Your appearance and the way you speak has hints that you were raised in the Dornish Marches" she pointed out. "My husband was a prince of Dorne."
Ser Criston knelt on one knee, "Forgive my impertinence, princess. I am Ser Criston Cole of House Cole, my house is in service to House Dondarrion."
She waved the man off, "No need for the formality Cole. I presume that you are my nephews previous master-at-arms."
"Previous, my lady?"
"All who taught my nephews and niece have been relieved of their service, ser" she said plainly.
"But I have served faithfully to House Targaryen for a number of years and there has never been complaint of my teachings."
"That is all well and good ser, but going forth, I am the one who has say over the education of 'ahibaayiy and until you have proven yourself to me. Then you can serve in any other capacity, but not with them."
His gaze betrayed nothing as their eyes locked, "Has the Queen and Hand been made aware of these changes?"
"Would you like to be the messenger?" she tilted her head and smiled.
He swallowed nervously, "Am I given a choice?"
"We are always given choices, Ser Cole" she leaned closer until their noses almost brushed. "What choice will you make?"
"I would like to prove myself, my lady" he said softly. "Given the choice."
"Then set to prove that you are still worthy of being their master-at-arms, and prepare to have an additional student, as Halaena will be joining my nephews soon. Is that understood?"
The man nodded and hesitantly rose, offering the group another bow and walked away.
Halaena softly broke the silence, "I will be joining my brothers muña?"
"Yes, my love. Because tell me, what did you and your brother witness right now?"
"You were talking to Ser Criston?"
Their muña shook her head, "Not just the obvious."
Her nephews and niece looked confused at what else she was asking them to point out.
"You witnessed me setting that man as an example," she smiled. "He doesn't truly know what position or power I hold, but I was able to have him fear speaking to your Mother and Grandsire, made him aware that I was in control of whether he would still be given a chance to prove that he could serve."
"How will you have us learn to do it, Muña?" Aegon asked.
"I will be highly involved in your teachings, because not everything that is taught are the things that you should learn" she said.
This only further confused the children and the faces they made had her laughing heartily.
"Seems as if I have my work cut out for me, don't I?" she giggled. "But let's make this our first lesson and remember it well; sit still, listen, and prove every bastard wrong."
This caught the three Targaryen's off guard and their shock made them laugh at her blunt choice of words.
"Perhaps my words sound a bit much, but let me tell you this" the three paid close attention. "No one in this world will give a damn about you, if you don't pretend to do it yourself. As much as I would love to say that humanity is kind and loving, everyone has something to gain."
"What about you, muña?" Aemond asked. "What do you have to gain?"
"That is for me to know and the rest of the world to find out," she smiled. "But I hope you are ready to learn as much as you can from everything that I have learned."

The Handmaidâs Tale: Spoilers & Long Rant
Full disclosure, I didnât watch the series finale of The Handmaidâs Tale or the majority of the past several seasons. I have, however, read the recaps and saw the comments from the writers and Elisabeth Moss on the final episode. I was once a major fan of this show. It brought me into fandom life and to Tumblr, eventually learning how to make proper gifs and for that I am thankful. Itâs been a wonderful creative outlet for me and a fun distraction from the stress of every day life. After all these years, I didnât think this show could still enrage me but it has. Iâve seen the reaction from fans who stuck with this show over the years and youâre not crazy - the show is badly written.
The interviews from the writing team and Elisabeth Moss post-finale are full of condescension. Their final message has been to reduce the audience to âsilly girlsâ for appreciating the romance in this story. A romance they continuously fueled by promoting âTeam Nick/Team Lukeâ nonsense via marketing (which was ridiculous and insulting by the way). I keep thinking about how they feel like Aunt Lydia trying to shame and dismiss anyone in the audience who cared about Nickâs character and the romance themes in this story as foolish girls. Itâs insulting and gross.
I havenât watched this show since early season three because I thought the writing was terrible and off the rails once they went off book. But I always kept up with Nickâs scenes because I thought Max gave a beautiful and nuanced portrayal of that character. More than anything Iâm disturbed by how theyâve treated Max Minghella. Iâve seen the comments from some of the cast and the writers. They constantly bring up his looks as a driving motivator for the reason people cared about his character. To reduce his brilliant performance to nothing more than the audience thinking "he's hot" is unprofessional to the extreme. Itâs rude and mean to both the actor and the fans. I keep thinking of the comment I saw where Max said he wondered if he was playing his character wrong this entire time when he read his character arc for the final season. When the narrative doesnât make sense to the actor who portrayed him and put time and effort into the performance, there is no other explanation than that it was completely contrived. And no surprise, that is how it came off to the audience.
A major problem with this show (god there are so many I could write a fucking novel) has always been that the initial terror of living inside the regime of Gilead was real and horrifying in season one. It was impossible to get out or have the slightest bit of autonomy so the act of love was the ultimate form of resistance. They ruined all the horror felt in the first season by making it very easy for people to come and go from Gilead to the point of absurdity. They gave characters the most insane plot armor and wrote to âscenesâ instead of storylines that made actual sense. June had the ultimate and most insane plot armor of them all, but there are many, many others. Look at someone like Janine. I love Madeline Brewer (as an aside, she really deserved an award for her brilliant performance in season one), but her plot armor was ridiculous. She was a Handmaid, sent to the colonies, a Jezebel, a Handmaid againâŠ..I think!? I donât even know what they all did with her but the fact she wasnât dead at some point was laughable. And I don't mean that I wanted her dead, I wanted them to write a storyline that made sense for an insanely talented actress. The writers often treated these characters like dolls in a toy box inserting them in whatever way the felt like at the moment instead of telling a believable story.
Throughout the years the writing failed the majority, if not all, of the main cast members. They spent way too much time on guest character arcs that went nowhere instead of writing a believable progression for the full-time brilliant cast members they had. For example, Iâm no Luke fan, but his character and even Moira had nothing to do once they made it to Canada. I genuinely felt bad for the actors who are very talented and were left for years with nothing of substance to do. They should have mapped out the main cast storylines in believable ways from the beginning instead of adding all these guest stars whose storylines often filled no purpose. The cast and source material have always been top notch it's a shame the writing failed them so spectacularly.
Other major issues throughout the series include not addressing race in the rise of Gilead (not to mention how may black women died because of June's stupidity), how they relished in torture porn (how many times did they show women being abused for the sake of shock value) and pushing a narrative of feminism that basically can be reduced to women are good no matter what atrocities the commit (Iâm looking at you Serena) and all men are bad by virtue of being male. The fact that they had June become friends with and forgive Serena is disgusting and implausible. The first time this show really angered me was when they had Serena hold down June and rape her so that she could get her baby faster (a disgusting episode written by Yahlin Chang who was a co-showrunner this season). In the end these two women are suddenly fine and friendly because âwomen rock,â I guess.
The failures are many and the successes few. This show really did have a brilliant first season but they majorly lost the story as soon as they ran out of source material from Margaret Atwood. Long term fans deserved better. Margret Atwoodâs source material deserved better. Max Minghella and Nick deserved better. So long Handmaidâs Tale. You were an epic disappointment and often insulting.
P.S. If you want to go watch a brilliant show about fascism please go watch Andor. Iâve said it before but even if youâve never watched a Star Wars show or movie in your life, itâs incredible. It is brilliantly written, had an incredible cast and is perfectly executed. The story is wonderfully told, the characters feel realistic, their outcomes are often not predictable yet their ultimate conclusions feel true and deeply satisfying. If only The Handmaidâs Tale could have been written the same way.
#the handmaid's tale#nick x june#osblaine#max minghella#elisabeth moss#rants#sorry if this isn't the best written i just had to get that off my chest#you guys i seriously cannot believe this show has the power to make me mad#it's not even worth the time but i had to rant that out#now back to my regular scheduled content#relishing in the pure joy that is pedro pascal and living in a galaxy far far away

Magha Woman: The Lonely Warrior against Patriarchy
The throne of Magha is not given, it is remembered. Those born under this constellation carry an invisible calling, an ancient yearning for an authority that was never truly granted in this life â but that pulses deep within the soul. The woman of Magha is born a queen without a kingdom, a priestess without a temple, a warrior without an army. And yet she does not bow.
â laifromthecosmos

Follow me on Twitter/X: @rahueyes.
In my personal life, I have a warrior mother. Since a young age (and when I say young, I mean as a child), she was already providing for our poor household. My grandmother worked as a housemaid, and while she was out, my mother would go to the streets and try to find something to do in exchange for a tiny amount of money, just so that when my grandmother came home, at least the bread would be guaranteed. My grandfather was ill and often hospitalized, so there was no male figure present, despite my mother's older brother, who later destroyed his life with drugs. Like many women with the Moon in Cancer, my mother became a maternal figure to her younger sister, my aunt. It was a family burden she carried from a very early age, and she lived only to provide for this family, which led to her delaying her own life and ultimately falling into a deep depression. With an Ascendant and stellium in Capricorn, Sun in Purva Phalguni, and Rahu in Magha, my mother became a front-line figure both in our family and in her work, despite constantly having to solve serious problems. She used every bit of argumentative skill and courage to resolve injustices, and in the end, even people in higher leadership positions respected her.
With her Moon in Cancer, my mother always thought of the well-being of her family and the education of her children. She wanted to give us what she never had â and she succeeded. I believe one of her problems today is facing the fact that she has a daughter with the same strength â or perhaps even greater â than her own. I was born with the Moon in Purva Phalguni and Mars in Magha, but with a very different background thanks to her. Since I was very little, Iâve been rebellious, but my mother repressed me a lot so that I wouldnât be that way. As a result, I grew up without developing my ability to handle many things. I let people take advantage of me while I kept silent. This repression is resurfacing now, and while I used to think it was only due to my Ascendant in Ardra â the fiercest Nakshatra â I realized it actually comes from my Mars placed in a sign he is very comfortable in, but in a Nakshatra that, unfortunately, in this patriarchal life we lead, is a problem for women: Magha.
I have this placement in the 2nd house (according to KP ayanamsa), and the problem is obviously located in the family area. Having a father who assumes the image of a king and commander, expecting his daughter to be obedient and not complain about anything, is the punishment women of Magha often bear. My mother always sides with him whenever thereâs a confrontation between us, because Iâm the one who is supposed to be wrong â even when heâs the one who committed the offense. Reading about this Nakshatra â especially about the women who carry it strongly â made me realize I am not the problem, despite being constantly labeled as such. I have no support, and I often feel alone in a war that never ends. I have no voice, no reason, Iâm the one who doesnât understand, the stubborn one, the selfish one. Even when Iâm right, Iâm wrong. The symbology of Magha is highly patriarchal and deeply connected to ancestry â particularly paternal ancestry. The Leonine aspect of sovereignty, authority, respect, leadership, and other traditionally masculine traits are all found in this Nakshatra. But it plays out very differently for men and women. Barbara Pijan described on her website that Magha is beneficial for men and malefic for women in a patriarchal system (not in those exact words â this is my interpretation): men of Magha are seen as kings, while women of Magha are seen as witches. My brother, who has his Ascendant in Purva Phalguni, is seen as a kind-hearted man. I, with my Moon in Purva Phalguni and Mars in Magha, am seen as cold, difficult â even called a disgrace. I posted a short explanation on Twitter/X, but Iâll expand more on it in this post.
Magha Nakshatra is ruled by the Pitris â the âAncestral Fathers,â spirits of those who lived before us. They are not gods like Vishnu or Shiva, but ethereal presences who uphold tradition, lineage, and sacred order. They watch over rituals, preserve the sacred heritage of the social structure â not in terms of progress, but of continuity. This connection with the Pitris brings a unique spiritual mark. Those born under Magha are bound to ancient family karma â a web of inherited commitments, vows, and glories. Thereâs an invisible debt to the dead, to those who came before. In Vedic tradition, this debt is repaid through honor, service, and maintenance of the social order. But the problem is: this structure was never made to house feminine power. Magha is the Nakshatra of the seat of power, the throne, legacy. It speaks of the highest place one can reach â but that place is guarded by the names, rules, and forefathers of a masculine lineage. In patriarchal cultures, the throne is the father, the husband, the king. The Magha woman is born, then, as an intruder in this space â or worse, as an invisible figure, whose power is only acknowledged when mediated by a man.
Magha means âthe mighty,â âthe magnificent.â It is one of the Nakshatras most traditionally associated with authority, status, honor, and ancestral legacy. Its symbol is the royal throne â a sign of the right to rule, to command, to preserve the established order. Here lies the tension for women: this throne has, for centuries, been reserved only for men. Women with the Moon or personal planets (or Atmakaraka) in Magha are natural leaders â proud, charismatic, and often feel isolated in their strength. Thereâs a deep sense of carrying out a familial or ancestral mission â but rarely is there any recognition for it. In patriarchy, the Magha woman becomes a threat: she questions the role of tradition (Pitris) without necessarily rejecting it; she possesses inherent authority that was not "granted" but spiritually inherited. Her radiance is seen as arrogance, her leadership as defiance. The throne of Magha was made for ruling, but the woman born with this energy must still earn the right to sit on it. She does so by confronting the patriarchy â not as a declared enemy, but as a forgotten heiress reclaiming what was taken from her.
The woman who carries Magha in her heart â whether through the Moon, Ascendant, Atmakaraka, or significant conjunction â is born with a deep sense of inner royalty. She knows she comes from a powerful spiritual lineage. But the world around her does not recognize this calling. Instead of a crown, she receives criticism. Instead of a throne, the domestic altar. Instead of glory, the duty of silence. The karma of this woman is to challenge this system â not out of empty rebellion, but out of awareness. She does not seek to destroy the past, but to transform it. She does not sever ties with her ancestors â she confronts them. The Magha woman must learn to be the living ancestor â the matriarch who builds a new tradition inside a house that once tried to erase her.
examples I posted on twitter/x about man with Mars in Magha vs. Magha woman.

Prash Trivedi, one of the deepest interpreters of the Nakshatras, describes Magha as the Nakshatra of the âpriest-kingâ â an archetype that combines authority with spirituality. In women, this creates what he calls a âcultural dissonanceâ: they donât know where they fit in. Many try to mold themselves into whatâs expected â good wives, good mothers, quiet â but that social role tears at their core. Others become solitary, distanced from family, seen as strange or difficult. Komilla Sutton writes that the greatest challenge of Magha is finding expression for its authority in a world that fears powerful women. She notes that these natives tend to carry the weight of tradition, but are called to transcend its limitations. Often, they must forgo traditional marriage or redefine it completely. Bepin Behari reinforces the idea that Magha is the Nakshatra of the spiritual continuity of the soul and that individuals under it are "guardians of lineage." The Magha woman, then, doesnât just live her own life â she continues an ancestral journey. This journey often involves breaking from patriarchal structures â not out of rebellion, but by destiny.
For the Magha woman, patriarchy is a distorted mirror of her own soul. She was made to reign â but placed to serve. And this imbalance causes not only external pain but also an internal war. Thatâs why many Magha women struggle with self-esteem, difficulty trusting others, or feelings of isolation. They feel forced to do everything alone, to constantly prove their worth, to endure betrayals and disloyalties without breaking. Patriarchy tries to reduce Magha to her reproductive function. But she is not just a mother â she is a matriarch. She is not here only to give birth â but to birth worlds, ideas, cultures. The great challenge is that her authority comes from within, not from outside. And in a system that only recognizes male and external power, the inner throne of the Magha woman becomes invisible.
The Magha woman is, in essence, a living ancestor in a young body. She carries in her bones the voices of the silenced women who came before. She was not born to obey â but to remember. And her journey is a solitary one, because the path of inner leadership has always been forbidden to women.
Her power is ancient. Her presence, real. Her struggle, spiritual.
She does not fight to assert herself.
She fights to remember who she is.
some answers about the thread. Women of Magha are powerful even though they are oppressed, there is no regret for having acted so courageously to face injustices but sadness for not having support.

...hmm...just thinkin' about an Avatar "no angst" AU, y'know, like an AU where the characters who died in the first movie just...didn't? For example...
âą Tsu'tey and Sylwanin are both alive and well. They officially tied the knot not long after the point when Sylwanin would've died in canon, and already have a child together by the time Jake arrives on Pandora.
âą Eytukan also lives and therefore he and Mo'at are still leading the clan, though of course Tsu'tey and Sylwanin are next in line.
âą Because the schoolhouse incident never happened in this AU, Grace was never kicked out of the village; her school is still running and she is on good terms with the Omatikaya.
âą The RDA is overall less psychotic than they are in canon, and the Avatar Program has been largely successful in establishing diplomacy with the local clans. There is still some level of tension between the humans and the Na'vi of course, because the humans are ultimately still there to mine unobtainium and the Na'vi would prefer there was no mining at all, but in this AU the RDA is at least principled enough to not do things like bulldoze the Tree of Voices or bomb Hometree etc. (so, Hometree is still standing). Jake was never asked to spy on the Na'vi.
âą Grace is actually the one to introduce Jake to Neytiri when she brings Jake and Norm along to the school one day. Neytiri is intrigued by the goofy non-scientist "warrior" dreamwalker and Jake finds himself equally intrigued by her; they begin spending more and more time together, and when Jake expresses curiosity about her way of life Neytiri just naturally kinda takes it upon herself to teach him the ways of the clan.
âą Because Neytiri is neither tsakarem nor engaged to Tsu'tey in this AU, her romance with Jake is not quite as ~forbidden~ as it was in canon (and honestly they make zero effort to hide their feelings; the whole clan knows lol). The only remaining barrier is the fact that he's a dreamwalker and how that may affect things.
âą Jake and Neytiri fall head over heels for each other about as fast as they do in canon; after three months Jake is already fully convinced that he wants remain with Neytiri and the clan for the rest of his life rather than ever go back to Earth, where there is nothing left for him. Even getting the spinal surgery to fix his legs no longer holds any interest for him, since of course his avatar body can walk just fine.
âą By that point Neytiri begs Mo'at and Eytukan to let Jake do the coming-of-age ceremonies and become part of the clan so they can become mates. Mo'at and especially Eytukan are hesitant, but Mo'at consults Eywa and Eywa sends a sign of approval, so they allow it. Jake spends about an extra month preparing more specifically for Iknimaya and Uniltaron, and soon after completing those he and Neytiri actually get to have a proper mating ceremony. Jake does go through the permanent consciousness transfer at some point, though I haven't yet come up with the exact circumstances there...
âą The Sully kids get to have more extended family! Grandpa Eytukan, Uncle Tsu'tey, and Aunt Sylwanin are all still around, along with a handful of cousins (Tsu'tey's and Sylwanin's kids).
âą Quaritch never shot Grace in this AU, which means she never had to undergo the attempted consciousness transfer, which means Kiri wasn't conceived the way she was in canon. Buuuuuut I still want Kiri as part of the Sully family, so in this AU she is Jake and Neytiri's biological daughter and Neteyam's twin. She doesn't have the special Eywa powers that she has in canon, but does still have a spiritually-minded personality, and is a strong candidate for next tsakarem after Sylwanin. Grace still adores and dotes on her, especially when she shows interest in botany.
âą Norm and Trudy are happy in a long-term relationship.
âą There was no Battle at the Hallelujah Mountains, therefore Paz didn't die and was still around to raise Spider (undecided on how involved Quaritch was though).
âą I like to imagine that in this AU Paz and Trudy are good friends, both being pilots and all. It's through Trudy that Paz and Spider become involved with folks from the Avatar program and Spider meets the Sully kids.
âą Because she doesn't have the RDA-related traumas she has in canon, Neytiri is totally chill with Spider in this AU. She is mostly just curiously amused by the strange little human boy running around with his Na'vi friends.
âą Spider is semi-trilingual English/Spanish/Na'vi. English is his go-to since everyone he knows can speak it, but he can also do some Spanish (Paz and maybe Trudy's influence) and quite a lot of Na'vi (Omatikaya influence, though Norm was thrilled to help when he caught wind that Spider was interested in learning). Sometimes he (subconsciously) mixes up a combination of any two or even all three and spews out mishmash sentences no one else understands immediately and has to stop and re-word.
âą Because Quaritch is not the Big Bad Evil Guy the way he is in canon, Spider isn't really bothered by being called Miles. However, the nickname "Spider" somehow just stuck when he was very young so most people still call him that; it's mostly just Paz (and Quaritch) who call him Miles.
âą Jake is not Toruk Makto in this AU, because with the RDA being more cooperative/less aggressive, he never needed to be. He and Neytiri are just normal (albeit well-liked/respected) hunters in the clan. Perhaps eventually a day will come when Toruk Makto is needed and Jake will have some reason to step up...but not yet. He's perfectly content being just a regular clan member.
âą This has the side-effect of lessening Neteyam and Lo'ak's dramatic stunts as teenagers, because the legacy they're trying to live up to is simply "strong respectable hunter" rather than "legendary olo'eyktan Toruk Makto"
#avatar#''but without all that conflict there's not much of a compelling story so the movie would be boring'' SHHHHH#that's why this is only a just-for-fun ''what-if'' AU and not the the actual movie!!#also yes i know i said ''what if no one who died actually died'' but then Tommy is still implied to have died since Jake is on Pandora...đ
#sorry about that one; tommy's death is the inciting incident for jake leaving earth in the first place so. i left that one as-is#couldn't think of a good way to work him in#maybe another time :P

You do not have to write it, but what does Viserys' expression look like when he first sees something that makes him think Rhaella is a success? For example, Daemon agreeing to walk with her through the gardens (interrogation!) or take her up on Caraxes (prove your mettle!) or chatting with her while watching Jon and Rhaegar in the yard (Rhaegar's puppy dog eyes!).
Does Rhaegar go to Viserys with matchmaking plans? Does Jon help Rhaegar in his endeavors or just watch on helplessly? (Does Jon ever think about the fact that Rhaella is his grandma, and his dad-brother is trying to set her up with his other dad... if so, how bad is his headache after?)
Does Rhaella get weak in the knees when Daemon does something in especially good!dad style for Rhaegar? Does she get to have a sweet moment with Jon, her brand new son?? (I feel like Rhaegar will be trying to matchmake Rhaella and Jon too. He wants his brother to have a great mom!!! HIS mom!!! But I also feel like Jon will be awkward about it.)
... look, I just want them to all be happy. đ
Viserys nearly walks into a wall the first time Daemon shows something other than aggressive disinterest, which has been his default for every matchmaking candidate so far. Like, he's not sure what to think when he hears that Lady Rhaella has been invited to sup at Daemon's table. Perhaps Daemon is merely curious about the fate of their aunt Saera's children.
But all those other scenarios, for all that Daemon is operating in full suspicion mode at first, appear the absolute height of romance to Viserys. I'm pretty sure he sets his master of whisperers to the task of documenting every last interaction/outing between the two of them. He lives for the gossip, because Daemon sure as fuck won't tell him anything. Otto wants to stab a fork into his eyes every time he joins the king's table, because all Viserys wants to talk about is whether this particular interaction means a proposal is imminent.
Rhaegar's even more ambitious than just recruiting Viserys in matchmaking plans. His secondary goal is to get his mother a dragon, so he keeps seeding that as often as possible. Wouldn't a dark, moonlit outing in the Dragonpit (chaperoned by Dragonkeepers, of course) be romantic? Perhaps Daemon desires someone who is a peer, a dragonrider like him. Or perhaps time away from the intrigues of King's Landing, to a quiet location like Dragonstone, is the right move...
(Jon for his part is mostly along for the ride. He's there to back Rhaegar up when Daemon gets a little too suspicious, but otherwise, he's happily suppressing that his grandma is about to become his stepmother. I think you're also 100% correct that Rhaegar is much more secretly setting up scenarios where Jon and Rhaella have to team up / spend time together bonding. He probably does so by roping Jon into the "get Rhaella a dragon" sidequest as a cover story, because Jon's barriers are much lower when he's thinking about accomplishing a task.)
Daemon being a good father (especially a gentle one) definitely wins all the points with Rhaella. And given that she supposedly had a crush on Ser Bonifer, it wouldn't surprise me if she found a display of martial prowess unexpectedly swoonworthy. The ultimate scenario would have to be witnessing Daemon intervening when Ser Criston is being an ass to the boys, leading to a scrap between then, followed by Daemon taking over the boys' arms instruction that day instead. Who could resist Daemon being delighted as he tests the boys' skills?

What your opinion on all this talk of leaving the hp/marauder fandom because it directly/indirectly supports JKR? Do you have any desire to leave?
Well my opinion is that I can understand it completely if people choose to do so, but personally I have no desire to leave nor intention of leaving. I understand that it might bother individual people but I'm not asking anyone to look at this blog; in fact the reason I started to use this sideblog is so I could keep everything HP-related away from people who choose not to see it. While I think HP's cultural relevance today is such that it's impossible to avoid entirely, I do empathise with people who'd rather not see it. If someone wished to block me for continuing to blog about HP, I think that might be the healthiest option for everyone involved.
Anyway, I understand why this is happening and I think it's important to discuss. But that's the point. It's important to discuss, not stick our fingers in our ears.
I think this is a great post about it! Here are my own (long-winded) thoughts:
Personally I fundamentally disagree with the idea that we should stop reading and discussing works written by bad people. I don't believe that's a constructive or healthy way to engage with literature. If nobody's left to discuss something as culturally relevant as HP (or LotR, or whatever) critically, then what is the point of literature in the first place? Is it pure entertainment and therefore easily discarded? Ftr I'm also firmly against banning (even socially 'banning') literature of ANY sort, for ANY reason. "You shouldn't read X because it's morally wrong" is to me ultimately a conservative belief.
Anyway: I find it pretty obvious that JKR said 'if you like my books you agree with me' PURPOSEFULLY to cause this kind of a reaction, because she knew it would cause her detractors to become hyperfocused on pointing fingers at each other and thought policing each other over a kids book rather than focusing on what's actually going on. I don't think we should be playing into it, and I don't think even JKR believes it herself-- I think it was deliberate. And tbh from what I can see it has had the exact effect she intended.
The other thing I'll say is that (and tbf I can't say for sure) but I suspect that the online HP fandom might be exaggerating its own importance a little bit. Tbh I think that even if the online (and more liberal) fandom disappeared overnight there would still be tens of thousands of kids (the target audience, after all) discovering and reading Harry Potter for themselves across the globe. Scores of parents and aunts and grandparents who know nothing about JKR buying those books for the kids in their family. And that's not counting the people who actually do agree with JKR. Yes fandom disappearing might have some small impact, but tbh I think it would be all but insignificant. It would be much more, like infinitely more, materially significant for people in fandom to donate time and/or money to trans organisations in their own countries. ((I also think what would be somewhat helpful is for fandom to take responsibility in encouraging people not to watch the HBO series. The success of the series is imo more contingent on online opinion than the books.))
There are also millions of people still using twitter, instagram, and amazon, despite the very real material damage caused by Musk, Zuckerberg, and Bezos, and that's a MUCH more direct cause-and-effect than simply talking about Harry Potter because using those platforms LITERALLY lines the pockets of those individuals. I will say that if you're on twitter telling people they should stop talking about Harry Potter I simply will not take you seriously loll đ
I guess there is probably some amount of people who discovered HP through, idk, Marauders tiktok and decided to read the series, but how significant is this number? It's incredibly difficult to grow up in most countries around the world and not come across Harry Potter in some way. For good or ill I do think HP is en route to becoming a children's classic. If tumblr goes down and my blog and all the blogs I interact with on here disappear, I don't think this would change.
On the other hand, simply for posterity I do think there's some value in continuing to discuss it-- all of it, including the reality of who the author is, the cultural relevance of HP, the text itself and what this all means given its significance in our culture. And it's important to discuss it critically, honestly, and constructively. It's remarkably easy with HP to avoid giving money to the author, which is something I believe to be worthwhile, so tbh I can't bring myself to agree with 'it would be better if we stopped talking about it' in a general sense. Personally I don't think the only people left discussing it should be right wing maniacs lol-- again, for posterity if nothing else.
Also I think there's a slightly worrying tendency on the liberal 'left' (which is typically the majority in most fandom spaces) to shut down conversation and discussion in general, particularly if those conversations are uncomfortable. You see thought-terminating clichés frequently deployed in such spaces and I think it's just not helpful. Seeing posts from supposed leftists trying to convince people that it's morally wrong to even THINK about Harry Potter is pretty wild to me, tbh. I think that for a while now there's been much more of a focus among the left on idealism over materialism, to the point where material reality is totally ignored in favour of, essentially, trying to get everyone to think the correct thoughts. To me this just isn't a productive or intellectually responsible approach.
What is the material benefit of all of us simply shutting up about Harry Potter forever? How does this actually help anyone beyond yourself and your own conscience? To me it seems like ultimately a performative and virtue signalling action that is pretty meaningless when you're not doing anything else, and is particularly meaningless when you're not applying this to literally anything else in your life. Fandom isn't activism, but by extension NOT-fandom also isn't activism haha. Personally I dislike Marvel films and think they're barely-disguised propaganda for the American military-industrial complex, but I don't think it's evil for people to write their Bucky/Steve fanfiction or whatever lmao. And I certainly don't think it's wrong to discuss Marvel films, the opposite in fact, I think they should be critically discussed.
So, basically, I think it's perfectly understandable that people would want to leave the fandom. But ultimately I think that's an action you're taking for yourself, and I don't think there's much to be gained from refusing to discuss things deemed 'morally wrong.' I think to a certain extent it's natural and probably healthy to feel some guilt about it all, but also perhaps it's worth questioning why we feel such extreme guilt about this, which is really just people talking to each other about books, and not about the 486948736 other much more unambiguously destructive things we do with our time and money on a daily basis.
As long as we're willing to discuss this topic honestly and constructively, to be conscious and empathetic towards others, and to refrain from spending any money on HP-related products, I don't think it's wrong to remain in the fandom tbh. To deny HP's impact on today's literary landscape would be, imo, dishonest, so therefore somebody has to discuss it. And I'd much rather there be a variety of opinions within that discussion.
#tbh there is 0 strategy on the left and it's being completely decimated#by the much more organised much more deliberate right#online leftist spaces seem to me to have the strategy of:#'i will convince everyone that this is a good thought and this is a bad thought through simply repeating it in all caps.'#'and fighting anyone who disagrees with me slightly on the pettiest issues of all time'#I think the left needs to SERIOUSLY examine why so many people are being driven towards the right. on this issue and others.#and as far as i can see it refuses to do so.#for instance i think it'd be interesting to try and chart jkr's online radicalisation. like HOW it happened. and how to avoid it in future#but if it's viewed as wrong to simply engage with her beliefs and work even critically. then that will never happen.#but anyway i'm not going to do that myself lol i simply think it would be interesting and worthwhile if someone did.#replies

volando-voy replied to your post:
um say more because twitter suggests the changes are AWFUL
Off the top of my head:
They tone down a lot of Lilo's eccentricities/'weirdness' (affectionate) like gone is the amateur voodoo, the reason for Scrump's surgery, taking pictures of tourists, etc.
The other little girls teasing Lilo is framed more as a result of not knowing how to talk to her because her parents have died, than a response to Lilo's quirks. (I guess to make them more sympathetic? It doesn't really matter though because they aren't in the movie that much.)
Nani and Lilo now have a really kind/caring next door neighbor (David's mom? Aunt? Grandma???? Never specified but they're related somehow, I assume, since he lives there too.) So now Nani and Lilo have a convenient source of support which begs the question: why does Nani not lean on her more for help? (They have a dumb rationale for this--I'll get there.)
Cobra is not the social worker, he's just straight up a CIA agent.
Instead the social worker is a brand new character who is also kind and supportive and ultimately convinces Nani to give Lilo up (and the movie wants us to know that this is a GOOD thing*)
*I want to be clear that like. I am not advocating for negative portrayals of foster care/social workers, obviously. XD It's just that in the context of this movie specifically, 'the state separates a Hawaiian family for the greater good' is not the happy ending they THINK it is
Nani now has an additional tragic backstory element in that she was this really bright, promising young woman with dreams of going to college to major in marine biology but all of that had to be tossed aside in order to care for Lilo.
Nani overhears Lilo's wish for a friend (just like in the original) but then DOES ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ABOUT IT. The NEIGHBOR is the one who takes Lilo to the animal shelter and suggests getting a pet. Nani even argues with her about it after the fact!
Nani, in response to Lilo reminding her of THE FAMOUS LINE FROM THE ORIGINAL AND YA KNOW, THE THEME OF THE FILM, 'Ohana means family, and family means no one gets left behind or forgotten': That sounds nice but that's not reality!
No Gantu, because they didn't have the budget for him.
Pleakly and Jumba have a device that lets them morph into two human guys and they remain that way for most of the movie because again, budget.
Jumba is the primary bad guy. He's arrested again at the end/doesn't join their little family unit.
After the incident where Stitch nearly drowns Lilo, the social worker convinces Nani that it's best for her to give Lilo up. Nani agrees.
Therefore the most moving and nuanced scene in the original movie--when Nani sings "Aloha Oe" to Lilo--is fundamentally changed. Nani still hasn't told Lilo that they're being separated (BY CHOICE) and it's Lilo who asks Nani to sing the song, seemingly motivated by nothing. At least, nothing pertaining to the original context.
(Context that is IMPORTANT to the MOVIE ABOUT A HAWAIIAN FAMILY BEING SEPARATED BY AN AGENT OF THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT, SINGING "ALOHA OE", ORIGINALLY COMPOSED BY QUEEN LIL'UOKALANI, NOW VIEWED AS A FAREWELL TO HER COUNTRY AND PEOPLE AFTER BEING DEPOSED AS MONARCH OF THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS BY THE US GOVERNMENT)
Nani isn't really fighting to keep Lilo because she like. Wants to care for Lilo, and understands what she needs emotionally--the movie frames Nani's prolonged refusal to seek help and support as a misguided sense of responsibility.
(That isn't an interpretation, she tells Lilo outright that it's her responsibility to look after her because they're family. And then another character is like, 'Ohana means family and family means no one gets left behind...but that also means not leaving yourself behind.' Again, not an interpretation, that's the text of the film.)
So Lilo ends up with the neighbor and Nani goes to college but it's TOTALLY OKAY because she has an alien portal device that lets her come visit Lilo so it's FIIIIIIIINE that the state convinced Nani to separate the two of them TOTALLY FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE.
Oh and Lilo doesn't formally adopt Stitch--I guess because they felt he's sentient enough to make the 'I bought him!' thing uncomfortable??? I don't know. He's a cartoon alien dog! Do we also feel that Shaggy owning Scooby is bad??? ....I weep at the current state of media literacy.
Another change that just annoys me: They keep the 'Stitch plays the record through his mouth' bit, but when Lilo shows Nani, they have Nani get distracted every time he opens his mouth, I guess because if Nani had seen it, that would break the suspension of disbelief that she's buying his 'earth dog' act?
In conclusion: Neither Nani or Lilo really wants to be here, so the movie simply spins its wheels, putting off the inevitable, easy solution of listening to the nice neighbor and social worker, totally undermining the point of the original.
(And I've already seen this attitude in online spaces of people seeing this new movie and being like, 'wow! Nani was wrong/selfish in the original movie for keeping the two of them together and it's not FAIR to burden her with motherhood and Lilo is unsafe and--' AAAAAGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!)

Correction... we see Aangs crush/infatuation/love from the beginning, not Katara's.
Katara doesn't actually start having feelings for Aang until after she has her fortune read by Aunt Wu and she takes it seriously. Then it's not until Sokka says something about Aang being a powerful bender that Katara sees that her fortune is 'true'.
Why do I hate this?
Because it leaves no room for Katara to make up her own mind about who she should be with and how she should feel. It takes away her ability to choose and she will ultimately not see any other possibilities other than what she is told to believe. The fact that the writers did this just... ugh. No. It limits Katara to one choice and one alone.
It's not a good choice because she ends up in a semi toxic relationship with a man who favors one child over two others because he can airbend.
Also, if it does happen in the Live Action, then that's fine if they do it right. I honestly would be thrilled if there was no romantic subplot because then no one will be happy.
Also, I wanted to explain why I do screenshots of topics. It's because I can control who sees this better. I don't want the antis reblogging my words and using shallow arguments to come at me. So this is my way of controlling the discourse.
#poor katara had her choices made for her#i hate fortune tellers btw#they are always scams#pro zutara#pro katara#zutara#zuko and katara

The Saga of Great Uncle Asshole And The Priest From Hell
It's thanksgiving (in the US) so have a family gathering disaster that is old enough to be funny. Almost a decade ago, after a life of stirring up drama everywhere she went, my grandmother died. She was an unhappy woman who tried to be better to her grandkids than she was to her kids, and didn't always succeed, and she's the reason that when I smell cinnamon tic tacs they're accompanied by the reek of an illusory cigarette. This is not a sad post. This is a post about the fact that her funeral was a fucking disaster and it was ultimately about 50% her fault. See, my whole family was at one point or another catholic. Grandma really enjoyed going to church in her last years because it got her out of the nursing home, and priests have to listen when you tell them about the husband you divorced and the children who think they know better than you. Grandma did not consider the fact that the local priest she'd latched onto like a talkative moray eel in a cloud of nicotine smoke was an unmitigated bigot. She left instructions that she wanted her funeral to be at that specific catholic church and for that priest to do the sermon. It didn't occur to her that the person who would be organizing her funeral would be her gay daughter and her daughter's wife.
Shit started getting real about when the doors opened to recieve mourners. Over the course of ten minutes, my aunt summoned:
her elder sister, a paralegal
my father, who has never seen a conflict he would not cheerfully walk away from
Their younger brother, in order to swear at the priest
My mother, who hadn't had a good opportunity to fight a priest since we left our own church and was game to do it again.
This left me, the eldest grandchild, in charge of the receiving line, despite the fact that I knew approximately no one there. My brother and cousins were woodenly shaking hands and then whispering "who's that?" "I don't know." My aunt's husband was escorting the elderly and infirm up the stairs one at a time. My uncle's wife was also around but she knew even fewer people and was mostly listening at the door of the ongoing argument.
So when my brother and Boy cousin went to see if we could pry someone who knew who was related to us out of the argument and I was busy trying to convince an octegenarian that she did NOT need to figure out which of her cousins had married one of grandma's siblings before sitting down, Girl Cousin was alone at the door.
Great Uncle Asshole arrived in a storm of curses and a faux-coonskin cap. He blew past Girl Cousin, thumped his cane up the steps, and seized my hand. It was like shaking hands with an extremely strong mummy. "You look just like your mother! It's the hair, what a bird's nest. Where's your daddy? And the rest of Helen's brood."
I muttered something about them finalizing details with the priest.
"Well, they'll come see me soon enough. Bet you don't know who I am!" I didn't know who anyone was. Everyone older than me was having a verbal cage match with a member of the clergy or escorting some other old fogey to their seats, everyone younger than me had even fewer clues, and my only hope was to wrap this conversation as fast as possible. "Nope!" I said, "I haven't seen most of the people here in years." If I had ever seen them in the first place. He was going to be mad, but I figured if I had to be the bouncer I could probably take an eighty-something year old guy who breathed like the surgeon general's personal warning to smokers. I could at least shut the door on him.
"Of course you wouldn't! Your gran wouldn't have told you. I'm your great uncle Roger, and I'm here to bury the hatchet, by which I mean your grandma! She and I swore over our father's casket we'd never be under the same roof again while we both lived, and by god I kept my oath!" People were starting to stare, and it was at this moment that a thirty-something man in a suit sprinted up the stairs, and my uncle's wife, with a look of dawning horror, called her husband. "Roger's here." The middle aged folks descended immediately. Here is a snapshot of the ensuing conversation: "Roger, why don't we find you a seat?" - my mother in her best teacher voice "Glad to see you're doing well enough to make it" - My father, in his best 'good god I want to be anywhere else' voice. "Take me to the coffin! I want to see her with my own two eyes!" - Great Uncle Asshole, "And hang up my **** hat! Killed it myself!" "I'm so sorry, I didn't know he could walk that fast" - strange suit man "If you are QUITE finished, I am starting the ceremony in ten minutes" - the priest
As my father and his brother towed a grinning and cursing old man to the furthest reaches of the family section, my mother and my oldest aunt caught all the cousins up on the argument with the priest. My youngest aunt was still crying while her wife stared fixedly at the stained glass panes and periodically handed over tissues. The upshot of it all was that my aunt and her wife would be allowed to attend the funeral (on pain of the whole family literally walking out on the priest) but would not be allowed to take communion, because the priest didn't believe in their marriage. My aunt's wife had neglected to point out that, being Jewish, she wasn't going to take communion anyway. "That's fucked" said boy cousin, and the four of us immediately resolved in whispers to refuse communion as well. The priest opened his sermon with pointed remarks about the older generation's devotion and respect for the church. He continued on through psalms and all that until he got to the blessing of the eucharist and asked the family up to receive communion. My father, who hadn't taken communion since I could remember, stayed seated. My mother stayed seated. My aunts and uncles stayed seated. The cousins stayed seated. About a third of the church didn't move. "Well father, I'll have mine! These young folks think hey have all the time in the world to get right with the lord, but you and I know better!" The priest, who had been visibly hoping god would smite us, turned a wincing glare on my great uncle and the series of distant relatives and nursing home neighbors who were now shuffling up. The service dragged on. We were lined up to say goodbye to everyone, while the suit man (who would turn out to be my second cousin) bodily hauled great uncle asshole and his coonskin cap down the stairs. "I should have known my sister wouldn't manage to raise any good Catholics! Horrible woman." he said loudly as he was stuffed into a car driven by suit man's apparent twin. The priest approached as we were finally ready to leave, to ask why we were so stubborn that we deprived ourselves of communion. After all, unlike my youngest aunt, we weren't obvious sinners! "Oh, I'm Lutheran" - My eldest aunt. "I'm an atheist" - My uncle "I don't think you're qualified to bless anything." - My mother, who learned her religion primarily from a horde of socialist-leaning nuns.
With that, we left the wreck of my grandmother's funeral behind. "Helen," said my mother, very deliberately, when we were safely in the car, "would have HATED that." My dad started laughing. "Are you kidding? She would have loved that! It would have been all she complained about for years!"
#and then we had to go to the funeral luncheon#where we properly met the second cousins#explained the tea about the priest to them#and played a rowdy game of 'which of us is going the most to hell according to conservative catholocism'#which I won only by virtue of being the only out queer cousin#at the time anyway#apparently I was the only kid great uncle asshole knew existed#because he and grandma had had their falling out when I was ONE#Also grandma and great uncle's father was a piece of work#so all around a disaster zone#grandma STILL managed to drop a drama bomb on the following thanksgiving#from beyond the grave#because in her papers she left behind accusations that grandpa had cheated on her#at this point they had been divorced for over thirty years!

Sorry if ur not doing request anymore but can you please write something for Maddie and caspian and their son I beg of you. Thereâs no fanfiction in this fandom đ„ș and ur writing is so good
I should probably make it clear real quick that I don't do writing requests, BUT anon you are in LUCK, because I will gladly use this as an opportunity to PLUG MY LONGFIC WIP!!
May I introduce you to...."The Miracle of Backups"!!!
It has exactly what you're asking for: lots of Maddie and Caspian and Dave!! Lots of Maddspian, Kim-Keyes family fluff, and...some crushing angst too. Because that's how I roll đ
Here's the summary:
"Unbeknownst to Caspian, Maddie makes a backup of his upload just before his fight with Holstrom. After he dies in the battle, she resurrects him. This does not solve their problems." "A chronicling of twenty years of love and loss shared by one small, damaged family amid a changing world."
So basically, this is a canon-divergence plot where nothing changes aside from the fact that Caspian gets resurrected from backup immediately following the end of episode 6. This immediately sparks another massive existential crisis for our boy, but ultimately means that he gets to live through that whole 20 years he would've otherwise missed. The fic will follow the entire 20 years of this AU, and will probably be around 45 chapters long. I have the whole thing outlined!
Features: digital first dates! the utter chaos of surprise teen pregnancy! A more focused and thorough exploration of human-UI politics! Maddie and Caspian being loving parents!! No one going to therapy even though they really need it! (eventually) Maddspian Marriage! Cool aunt Justine!
Anyways, I'm being silly here, but I'm intending this to be a very serious fic, and my approach to it is staunchly to keep it grounded in Pantheon's themes and Ken Liu's ideas, and in how the characters would realistically handle such a situation, with all the messiness that entails. Lots of love, lots of loss, and lots of messy relationships. It's pretty important that people be aware that this is not a fix-it fic at all.
Anyways again! Dave himself doesn't show up for several chapters, but what I have here for YOU, anon, who is so very kind, is an excerpt from a chapter in the middle of the fic, at around the 10 year mark.
Context: Maddie and her engineering team have just completed the first full version of the upload androids we see in s2 ep7 and 8. Now that they have to beta test it, Caspian is, inevitably, her first choice for this. The Kim family heads to the Logorythms HQ to go see Caspian in the flesh for the first time in 10 years.
Final disclaimer: things will be edited as I start posting the story (SOON...), and the final version may end up different from this one! this is just a fun sneak peak :)
#pantheon spoilers#the box is a kinder callback to that one angsty oneshot i wrote for the canon universe#anyways ill give yall up through their kiss here#the rest you will have to wait for hehehe#emma writes#pantheon amc#asks#im VERY hyped to finish iterations so i can put both of these out#the miracle of backups

Iâm sorry but just IMAGINE Eloise and Cressida as parents?!
Cressida would 100% be a full blown PTA mum, planning all the best events for her childrenâs school.
Eloise would inevitably be dragged along to help decorate and somehow end up agreeing the directing the school play - because sheâs read the book a MILLION times! And âCouldnât possibly let them butcher it.â
Theyâd have two daughters and a son. Aged, 5, 3 and 6 months. Lunet, Maeve and Benedict Jr.
Eloise would try sneaking treats that Cressida had baked for a fundraiser. Getting caught with frosting on her mouth, she swears blind to her wife she a no idea where it came from.
Cressida baking special cookies just for Eloise to eat! đ
Eloise would read to the children every night, Cressida insisting sheâs just there to tuck them in but ultimately sat across the bottom of the bed to listen too.
Cressida will often insist Eloise continues reading despite the fact the kids are already asleep, and they will have to reread that chapter again the next evening!
Uncle Benedict would love taking care of the children so their mothers may enjoy a walk or weekend alone đ„č âDonât do anything I wouldnât do! Though I suppose that doesnât leave a lot.â
Uncle Colin and Aunt Pen would already arrive with an array of wonderful gifts. Eloise has a shelf of trinkets, many from Cressida and her family. Stemming from rocks, sea shells and pressed flowers to tiny figurines and bottles of sand from Colinâs travels.
Eloise secretly adores that Cressida insists on hanging Benedictâs paintingâs in their home.
Eloise will often return home to Cressida and Violet sharing tea in the garden - Violet cannot go more than a few days without visiting her grandchildren.
Aunt Daphne and Cressida would take great pride in buying the children the cutest shoes and outfits - much to Eloiseâs dismay when she finds her youngest in a âhideousâ bonnet. âWell what has she got this monstrosity on her head for? Oh my sweet girl donât worry mummy will protect you from the taffeta.â
Eloise often getting emotional when spending time alone with her wife and children, free of any distractions. Forgoing her book to simple watch Cressida and their toddler play in the grass with wooden blocks.
Cressida tired at the breakfast table a child on either knee, as Elouise and their eldest read the newspaper out loud. Gently kissing their temples and stirring her tea.
Eloise and Cressida often indulging in a sneaky cigarette together at the end of a long week. Hidden out on the balcony to their room - their children fast asleep in the next room. Often shushing one another when their giggling threatens to wake them.
Eloise nearly having a âheart attackâ seeing her child on a horse for the first time, insisting her wife is insane and sheâd prefer both âher girlsâ back on the ground.
Cressida being the good cop, Eloise bad cop in many matters. I truly believe Cressida would be the biggest softy towards their children.
Eloise helping the children with their school work, whilst Cressida knits across the room (Cressida is utterly no help academically.)
Violet often insisting on taking the children for the evening because her home is simply âtoo bigâ and Cressida and Eloise are âstill youngâ.
Cressida and Eloise often opting to enjoy their meals in the form of picnic. Packing up the children to spend the evening down by the river.
Cressida rolling up her sleeves and teaching the children to skim stones.
Eloise sat waiting to aid them all in drying off when theyâre done. The baby resting upon her chest.
Eloise often scolding Cressida more than the children, her wife simply brushing her off with terms of endearment or a kiss.
Cressida taking birthdays very seriously, waking up early to decorate the house. They keep Violets birthday hat tradition well alive. Eloise made her one their first birthday spent together and she still has it. Violet cried when they did the same for her.
The entire family often visit for long weekends and dinners - Eloise and Cressida opted to live in the country where there is more privacy and space for them.

A tiger monk au post of yours brought up the idea of an âappointmentâ between azure and Tripitaka possibly leading to a fourth cub
If that were to happen, what would be the pilgrims, Macaqueâs, Yellow Tuskâs, and Pengâs reactions to that news?
Ref.
The whole squad be dunking on these silly cats. Macaque was the first to know obviously.
Macaque, can barely breathe: "AAAAHHHAHAHAHAHA!!!" XD Peng: (*similar laughing but as a peacock screech!!*) XD Yellow Tusk: "Oh ho ho ho! You two were careless, weren't you? Congratulations all the same!" Tripitaka, thoroughly mortified: "But I did not drink the water from the Mother-Child River! How could this be?!" Wukong, sucks in a disappointed sigh: "Master... demons do not abide by human physical limitations. If you and Azure... ugh! Unionized - then a cub is a risk no matter your preferred sex." Tripitaka, embarrassed: "OH." Zhu Bajie, snickering: "Even *I* know that, master!" Sha Wujing, sincere: "If you wish to terminate the pregnancy, we support your decision 100%." Tripitaka: "HEY WAIT!" (*Tripitaka grabs Azure by the colllar and pulls him down to face level*) Tripitaka: "Did you know about the risk!?" Azure, a little scared: "I honestly did not know. I must have healed from whatever method Manjushri used to geld me." Ao Lie, idea: "Oh! That could be it!" Wukong: "Huh? What could be it?" Ao Lie: "Didn't all those lady demons try seducing Master because his body has super-healing life energy? Maybe when he and Azure did special cuddles, it healed him too!" (*the whole room falls silent... before Macaque, Peng, Zhu Bajie, and even Sha Wujing fall into bellowing laughter at the revelation. Tripitaka falls to the floor to pray. Azure covers face in embarrassment but purrs happily. Wukong falls to his knees groaning with irony. Yellow Tusk is chuckling away, trying to spare his friends' feelings. Ao Lie stands there smiling, blissfully unbothered by the situation.*) Macaque, wiping away tear of laughter: "Who would have thought that the Buddha's pet would have it in him?" Tripitaka, in prayer: "Please gracious Buddha, I apologise for unknowingly sacrificing part of my divine yang to heal my companion's neutering... and falling with child in the process." Peng: "I don't think my nephew minds if he didn't care to warn you!"
Tripitaka, already having experienced the triplets, and knowing how his shapeshifting demon biology helps out in the proccess, ultimately decides to keep the surprise pregnancy.
Tripitaka: "It isn't their fault I was careless. This is my penance for breaking my vow of Chastity."
Macaque, snorts: "Gonna need to step up your kitten game if you want to redeem those chastity points, fluffy. You and lover boy are 4 to-"
Tripitaka: (*glares angrily enough to send a chill up the shadow monkey's spine*)
Macaque, wisely: "Ah. Nevermind the batting average then."
The thankfully singleton cub MĂšng HuĂ n (æąŠćč»/"dream") is born looking similar to the cryptid Maltese Tiger - owning to her sire's azure-blue fur.

Her name comes from the fact she was very sleepy and easily-distracted as a cub, frequently losing focus while playing with her older siblings and wandering off in a daydream. The sort of baby who needs to be leashed to avoid misadventures.
As an older juvenile she still has trouble with daydreaming and wandering off - something that never fails to worry her parents and uncles.

Additional hilarity; if she's born closer to modern day then MK would have an aunt who's mentally just a little older than him. Imagine a big sister-figure twice his height who's too passive to admit when her Mcdonalds order is wrong.
Hangs around Metropolis more than not. Whenever she gets lost she knows how to backtrack to Pigsy's by the smell of his cooking + her older brother Tangzi.
Tbh is probably the person who set her Pigsy's order to drop off at the construction site - the gps on the app confused her.

Sorry I would love for you to explain all of your rare pairs. I love deep warrior cats thoughts pls if you want to do so
ThornRat (Thornclaw x Ratscar) Dark Forest trainee pairing. They're also both old enough to remember the Old Forest . The whole dynamic I have in mind is Thornclaw being rather oblivious to his sexuality and also being a huge fucking hypocrite (he's one of the more conservative warriors of TC, ironically). Ultimately his relationship with Ratscar, if you can even call it one, is doomed from the start and Ratscar is stuck yearning for someone that's not worth pursuing for multiple reasons.
BrambleFern (Bramblepaw x Fernpaw) I specify -paw because I see them as a bit of a tragic pairing where it doesn't end up working out because Dustpelt swoops right in and inserts himself in Bramblepaw's place. Also, in the context of my rewrite, Brambleclaw is the one to run away to ShadowClan instead of Tawnypelt so whatever spark he and Fernpaw had going never gets to go anywhere. I imagine they're still friends but have some moments of 'what if' every now and then.
BrindleFlint (Brindleface x Flintfang) Honestly I just wanted to give Ashfur and Ferncloud a father that already existed in the series and also didn't fuck up the family tree any more than it already is. I think I got this idea from someone else but I can't exactly remember who - but it's a very interesting concept considering the events of the first arc and how Flintfang was still alive for the events that happened (according to Tigerstar's Fury and Blackfoot's Reckoning). I headcanon that Ferncloud is named after her aunt Fernshade, too. Additionally, in the anthro AU, their story is a lot sadder but that's another story...
LongWind (Longtail x Runningwind) Childhood friends to almost-lovers! They're around the same age and would've definitely trained together. As mentioned in my HalfOne family tree post, they had a budding interest but it was cut short by Runningwind's death. Sad :(
IvyBreeze (Ivypool x Breezepelt) This one is just funny. "You wanna kiss me so bad it makes you look stupid" kind of shit. Breezepelt would be fucking fuming over it because he doesn't want to be like his dad.
HalfDove (Half Moon x Dove's Wing) Another one that's mostly in the context of my rewrite! I'm imagining it's very one-sided since I also love HalfJay, but it's a very complicated thing where Jay's Wing is very focused on saving their colony and too scatterbrained to really put any serious commitment to Half Moon (something he tells her explicitly, but she pursues anyways). Dove's Wing is embarrassed of her crush and knows it was never meant to be, not only because she's a prophecy cat but also because Half Moon doesn't even like her that way.
IceApple (Icewing x Applefur) Another Dark Forest Trainee pairing! I have a lot of these because I got attached to them. Not my only Applefur ship but certainly one that's kinda fun to think about. I don't have much to say about these two sadly but I thought it was a cute idea that I could maybe build off of later.
MinnowMouse (Minnowtail x Mousewhisker) I don't actually think this one is that much of a rare pair, I've seen a lot of ppl talk about this but I was kinda running out of ideas since there's a lot of characters idgaf about sorry LOL anyways this one is based on a scene in Dark River and the fact they were both Dark Forest trainees in their adulthood.

I still think it's insane how, in the show, they accidentally made Lyanna a terrible person.
Like yes, even in the show she's still a young person who was taken advantage of and yes the fault ultimately lies with Rhaegar BUT they were so obsessed with making it out to be this epic love story "Roberts Rebellion was built on a lie" that by (apparently) aging her up and having them marry etc they made Lyanna a woman who ran off with a married father - of two very young kids- , who watched while (or demanded that) he annulled his marriage and delegitimized his two existing kids, then married him herself and named her own song after the (by that point) brutally murdered deligitimized little boy.
Like. The writers on that show are such idiots.
No wonder Jon did not want to think about his true parentage. These people are AWFUL.
There's absolutely no way this will be even slightly similar in the books, even IF George RR Martin wants to leave it ambigous just how consensual the relationship between Lyanna and Rhaegar was, there's no way she would have any positive feelings about him by the time Aerys murders Brandon and Rickard/demands Ned to be taken to KL.
I refuse to believe that the girl who defended her fathers bannerman (aka seems to have a keen sense for right and wrong, stands up for others, etc) would be fine with being locked up, pregnant in a tower, while almost her entire family dies in a war that was started because of this relationship
Preach it, anon.
Lyanna deserved so much better.
I get so annoyed when defenders of Elia act as if it's an established fact that book!Lyanna knowingly and willingly participated in Rhaegar's actions - give the girl some credit!
But the showrunners really did establish show!Lyanna as this callous imbecile and then tried to paint it as romantic! Absurdity!
All to force an unquestionable legitimacy onto Jon-Aegon who has to stand in for his erased half-brother of the same name and wear a "rival for the throne" hat all the while chanting that he doesn't want it, and has zero opinion on this revelation otherwise.
"How can we make everything about Dany? Like Jon's parentage, that's clearly about showing how Dany feels about it! None of the Starks need to have opinions. It's not like it affects them. Anyway, yay, this happy Stark-Targ romance drives home how tragic the relationship between aunt and nephew is! Brilliant storytelling!"
