Thinking about vestigial structures and phantom limbs as motifs....

Something about flightless birds, the pelvic bones of a whale, the human tailbone. Things that were once advantages, that became useless, that dwindled away but did not disappear, that still live in you. You have outgrown it, never used it, but it's still a part of you, still written in the code of your being.

And something that's gone, that was there but is no longer, that was so much a part of you that you still go about reaching for it as if you never lost it, until the lack of response reminds you. Pain that comes out of nowhere, that should have stopped, that you can't treat because the root cause is gone.

to have something and be unable to use it, or to keep trying to use something that you no longer have. The absence of purpose vs the tangibility of loss.... It's all about a void, about haunting, about grief.

A whale does not think about walking on land. A three-legged cat kneads one-pawed biscuits. A human catches themself making a joke meant for someone who left long ago.
