NO LET’S TALK ABOUT IT BECAUSE i’m willing to come to botw defense in some cases because i feel that there’s some strong substance there but totk?! did me so dirty, i must be truthful. did me so dirty and left a lame smell behind it.

botw:

zelda characterization is actually something i love about this game; while she isn’t always the strongest/most depthful persona, the fact that her lack of agency and empowerment in that story is actually focused on as the central struggle is a great way to have the typical damsel-in-distress formula while not compromising the characterization of a main character. link’s memories of zelda are the sharpest evidence we get into how hyrule suffered from the calamity, both before and after it passed—we only learn about how hyrule has suffered in the scars of the calamity and the echoes of a dead kingdom, but zelda’s cutscenes turn that suffering into a personification. zelda’s struggle with unlocking her power was relatable, touching, and substantial, and the way the memories end up culminating to her sacrifice makes for an excellent and heavy-feeling conflict. her character is central to botw, and i only wish that they had characterized her much further, so that she had more of an arc in the past, and so that the time we see her would be more valuable.

mipha was done DIRTY. princess of a realm, successor to the king, skilled aquatic warrior, and pilot of a divine beast, and all we get of her is that she has feelings for link? NINTENDO. make it make sense for me, i beg of you. while there’s nothing necessarily wrong with only depicting her feelings for link, it does not really inform us to her character (because link is mostly more static and ambiguously characterized in relation to others), and fails to actually make the tragedy of her defeat feel substantial. still, the details of her character are fun, and the character traits we have of her are good material—it is such a shame that it wasn’t used properly.

urbosa is obviously is a very likeable character, and ostensibly the wisest of the champions. she’s a strong-woman in a sense, but but that characterization isn’t reductive to her persona. her role as a chieftain isn’t very thorough, but nor is daruk’s, so i wouldn’t necessarily attribute that fact to a misogynistic approach. the misogyny (and exoticism??) in the characterization of the gerudo kinda plagues every part of the story/every location that involves them (for example, how most wandering gerudo are on the search for a voe, which is an amusing gag, but not all that funny when we don’t have much else of gerudo culture, or a good sense of their society, in comparison to say, the zora. the rito don’t have it all that well either, to be fair). urbosa’s characterization as a fierce warrior and wise leader isn’t done badly, but it’s very one note, which is disappointing to say the least.

i have conflicting feelings on riju. she’s the young ruler of the gerudo, but it feels as though there’s not much else to her. the moments where her youth shines through (like the stuffed animals in her room, and the fact that the lightning helmet is too big for her) are very endearing, but we don’t really get a sense of how she struggles as a leader, or of how her history informs her person. she’s gerudo, and a later successor to urbosa, so she also exemplifies the same strong and wise traits, which isn’t a very honorable persona to the facts of her character. it is a shame that riju isn’t given as much depth as her character implies, especially when the timeline of the gerudo desert/vah naboris quest is so strong, and when it seems like she has so much potential substance that goes unrealized for the rest of the game.

impa plays the village sage, and is very fun in that role, but there isn’t much more to her than relaying the story of the calamity and offering short comments to things memory or sheikah related

of course, there are other female characters in botw, but none of them star (or enjoy cutscenes) like everyone mentioned above.

totk:

the characterization of zelda in this game is just… ruinous. calamitous, if you will. that person you met in the last game is dead and gone, and the zelda in her stead is heartbreakingly inactive in this story.her sacrifice to bring the mastersword to the present was so strong, and while i hate that it’s essentially a repeat of the damsel-in-distress setup from the last game, it’s technically a different type of conflict, one which i normally imagine wold set her up to take an active character role, but she is so very upsettingly passive in this story, just constantly in the backseat. not a single action of hers (apart from the eating-the-secret-stone bit) impacts the events of the past, which wouldn’t be so bad if she didn’t have the power/knowledge to do so, but she does! her knowledge of the calamity, of the cave paintings, of the incident that brought her to the past are all pieces of information that should have impacted the events of the past! and the fact that they don’t is more than mischaracterization, it’s just a gaping plot convenience. it’s already dismaying to see her characterization from the last game discarded, but the fact that she isn’t recharacterized anywhere near to the same depth or complexity as the last game is just. a source of apathy, as a zelda fan. the events of the past do not expand on her much at all, but nor do they expand much on ruaru or ganondorf or sonia, nor anything related to the zonai, which is kind of a recurring thing in this game.

sonia was fridged, one and done. kind and caring mother character killed off for an emotional payoff. in almost every cutscene of sonia, she is consoling or caring for zelda, so that when ganondorf kills her, the moment carries emotional weight. her only role in the story is to be a tragic loss, and not in any poetic way, but in the storytelling 101 way. she’s quite depthless, and while her persona and design are quite likable, her characterization is undoubtedly poor.

mineru… doesn’t get enough time in the story. every aspect of her character is defined in relation to the conflict with ganondorf (besides being smart/techy), which is a conflict she doesn’t really have any personal stake in, besides her relation to ruaru. this wouldn’t really be a problem if we were given any insight into the relationship between the two of them, but we aren’t given much of anything. at all. so the fact that she’s a zonai and ruaru’s sister is doing a lot of the heavy lifting to sustain our belief in her personal investment and motivation in this conflict, which simply doesn’t make for a good story. her cutscenes outside of the past really isn’t all that different to the other sages, and the sages are so characterless that they don’t even have names.

purah being redesigned the way she is feels like… a choice by the developers. she has about as much of an active role in the story as impa did in the last game, so her actual characterization isn’t necessarily all that important, since she doesn’t feature much. nevertheless, it leaves a bad taste in the mouth that the essential leader of the effort to redevelop hyrule is given less characterization/character conflict than many npcs in that same location, not to mention in the whole game. the fact that she’s redesigned to be older and… modelesque feels less like a development of her character and more of like a cheap ploy by the developers to put a baddie on the opening of the game to appeal to the demographics of gaming who have, well, a typically misogynistic view of women (and their roles in stories), to say the least of it.

i haven’t actually finished totk and i haven’t seen riju’s arc firsthand, so i don’t know enough about her new character to reflect on it.

i don’t know if you can tell but. i don’t like the story of this game. i’m not saying there aren’t things to like (definitely a super cool gaming experience! even just the story itself, good king ruaru defeats bad king ganondorf is a successful trope), but i feel like the story is just incoherent. characters aren’t really given reasons, motivations, or interest for acting the way they do (at least, in any way that implies that these characters are multitudinous or complex), or they’re taking reactive roles to the events of the story. the main conflict of the story is how ganondorf is threatening hyrule, but we see nothing of his motivations, nothing of how his actions impact ruaru beyond separating him from sonia (what of his kingdom? the livelihood of his subjects? the history of the zonai?), nothing of how it impacts zelda (the most we get from her is her reacting to sonia dying and her sacrifice to become the light dragon. so. three cutscenes), and nothing of how it impacts link. the events of the present are entirely disconnected from the conflict of the past, and it doesn’t do justice by a single one of its characters.

How much should a gynecological exam hurt?

I'm ace and never had sex or really masturbated as a result, so idk how much of the pain is not used to penetration and how much is possible vaginismus. I've had a few pap smears and two vaginal ultrasounds over the years, and every time, it's felt like someone is tearing me in half. I will have a death grip on the bed trying to keep silent and not cry out in pain... which might not be normal despite every obgyn I've ever seen behaving like it is??? Like, I've even asked multiple obgyns (I rarely see the same one twice at this point, which is frustrating but beside the point) if it's out of the ordinary, and it's always been dismissed as if it'll get better, but it never has. A friend of mine recently implied this isn't normal, so now I'm wondering if I've just always been stuck with shitty gynecologists.

So here's the thing: you shouldn't be experiencing that amount of pain even if you're unused to penetration. Tests like the pap smear can cause discomfort and small amounts of pain [specifically when they collect the sample], but the penetration itself isn't supposed to be causing pain, specifically not at that level.

Also, vaginal ultrasounds are supposed to be very mild.[Sometimes they hurt a little but they're mostly just supposed to be a little uncomfortable.]

There's always the possibility you have trash doctors/nurses [which is unfortunately a common issue] and they're not doing it properly. Sometimes there's pain during procedures like that if someone is especially tense too but it shouldn't be that extreme and if you're having that regularly, something is definitely wrong.

[Which is something you can check if you want, being gentle, using some lube and seeing if general penetration hurts!]

An issue here is that procedures like this are often under-researched and people frequently don't listen about things like vaginal pain. Which is shitty as fuck and inappropriate but it's common.

Vaginismus is definitely a very possible cause. Your best bet might actually be going to an OBG/YN who specifically works with people who experience vaginismus and/or general vulvodynia/dyspareunia and talking to them about what you're experiencing.

Because it sounds like you're probably not experiencing doctors constantly doing the procedures wrong [since you're going to so many different ones], but doctors that are still shitty because they don't care about the pain you're experiencing so maybe talking to a doctor who specializes in what you're experiencing would be more helpful.

(Also, like I said, maybe trying to see yourself if general penetration hurts might give you some clarity on the issue.)

Suddenly, an idea crosses your mind and you can't help the smug smirk that spreads across your face.

Stepping closer, you notice the way Sebastian's eyebrows furrow in confusion and his glare falters. 

"Am I close enough now?" you ask, leaning down to his level, faces only inches apart. Your grin only widens as you notice his gaze briefly lower towards your lips, taking note of his visibly shaky breath, chuckling as he growls in frustration.

The shorter male pushes at your chest, catching you off guard and making you stumble. He grabs the collar of your shirt, pulling you down to his level, and you can feel his warm breath hitting your face. 

"I hate you," he says, tone low as he glares at you through his eyelashes, his dark brown eyes holding something far deeper than hatred. At his words, you tilt your head to the side, a blank look on your face. You can't help but to search his gaze, narrowing your eyes as if it would make things clearer, yet you can't decipher Sebastian's mystery.

Then, you lean in once more, your faces barely an inch apart, and you couldn't stop yourself from smirking down at the boy.

"You hate me?" you ask, your sultry voice just above a whisper, taking notice of how Sebastian's eyes seem to follow your lips as you speak, along with the way his lips part for just a split second.

He blinks, completely taken aback. His face flushes red, but the surprise on his face is quickly masked by another glare.

Groaning in frustration, Sebastian lets go of your shirt and turns away, cheeks so hot he swears to himself that you can feel the warmth.

"You know what, [Name]? You're making me regret ever accepting this study date with you," He says, his back facing you as he tries to calm his racing heart down.

"Oh, you think this is a date?" you ask, raising an eyebrow and fixing your shirt as you grin at him. 

Sebastian quickly turns to face you, only to give you another glare, seemingly fed up with your antics. You chuckle, allowing a small grin to creep across your face.

"I'll stop, I'll stop," you say, grabbing the abandoned math book from the table and sitting down in the nearest chair.

The shorter male grew up craving affection, never having had enough, and he could not help himself from the need that coursed through his veins, making him feel as if there was a piece of barbed wire constantly tightening around his heart whenever he simply wanted to be close to someone. The sharp pang of pain always made his jaw tense, unable to do anything else other than just watch from afar, craving the attention of the person he held so dearly.

It wasn't just people though, he had noticed. Noticed the way that even despite his parents getting him a puppy, he couldn't shake off the anger building up inside him when the puppy constantly craved his father's attention instead. He did everything, put in his best effort, and it had never been enough, not even to a puppy.

Not when he made his first friend.

Not even with the first boy that made his heart thump so loudly against his ribcage that he swore the other could hear it.

The feeling of importance never came back to him, it was never mutual to him.

So, naturally, when he saw you going out of your way to get his attention, to make him flustered and to get him so annoyed he would just pull you closer with a snarl, his heart didn't hold the same familiar feeling.

Instead, his heart swelled, a heady rush of feelings overtaking him as his heart skipped a beat every time your gazes locked, rendering him speechless as if his mind was foggy, unable to think about anything.

It was the way you effortlessly rendered him speechless, unable to do anything but curse and shove you away, and you never realized the true effect you had on him, or how far this effect reached. For you, it was just a harmless joke, just teasing the guy who seemed like he couldn't stand you or anything that came out of your mouth.

It was all simply for shits and giggles.

Until Sebastian saw you being a little too close to a friend.

Surprisingly, despite the tension between the two of you, you often had study sessions together. Today was no different, if you didn't count how quiet and visibly tense Sebastian was, but you did not pry. You didn't have that luxury.

Even when you teased him, he merely glanced at you, his jaw tense, then his focus went back to his notes as if you never opened up your mouth. The way the boy just gave you an empty glare without insulting you or making any comments on your behavior was making you feel extremely uneasy, it was nothing like the Sebastian you knew.

In his mind, it was like all hell breaking loose. The way his mind raced with thoughts of you and the male, the two of you a little closer than what would be considered platonic. It made him seethe with anger, as if his heart was wrapped tightly with the familiar barbed wire all over again, growing tighter and tighter by the minute.

Despite every attempt you made, he couldn't stop himself from being so cold. It was from how heavy his heart felt, slowly crushed by the tightly wrapped wire. Every glance you gave him, every word that rolled off your tongue, they all made the indignation coursing through his veins run deeper, like fuel to the fire. It was supposed to help, to calm him down, and instead it made it all worse, making him feel like it was all a lie.

Like you were toying with him when you said you only did this with him and no one else.

On your end, you were getting fed up with the feeling of uneasiness, turning to look at Sebastian once more.

"Seb," you start, biting your lower lip nervously. Your gaze remains fixed on the other boy, anxiously playing with the pen in your hand as you waited for a reply.

"[Name]," he replies, his tone cold. It wasn't his usual irritated tone, nor were his words paired with his usual annoyed expression. It was like he was merely a shell of the boy you were talking to just yesterday.

"You're acting weird. Is everything okay? If… you don't mind me asking, that is," you ask anxiously, and your nerves don't go unnoticed, his gaze briefly flickering to your hand as you played with the pen. Suddenly self-aware, you put it down on the table, trying to sit still. As you lean back in your chair, you glance back at Sebastian, whose gaze was already on you, now meeting your own. The look on his face was blank, yet it emanated a coldness that made a shiver run down your spine.

For a few moments there was a tense silence between the two of you until Sebastian finally spoke up.

"Can't you see?" he starts, tilting his head to the side, jaw visibly tense, and yet the cold gaze was still present as if it was something normal for the shorter male. "You're acting like you did nothing." his eyes narrow, eyes fixed on you as if you were his prey. "You insert yourself into my life, tell me these things, do these things, and then… Then you just… Act like nothing ever happened. You said you don't do these things with anyone else, [Name]. I thought, for once, the feeling was mutual." he continues, harsh glare burning right through you.

"And then you went ahead, got close to some… some nobody. Like I was never there. Like you never did those things." his voice raises now, jaw clenching with the irritation of having to recall the close proximity you had with your friend. "I hate it. I hate how I need you to breathe, [Name]. I hate this tight grip you have me in. Did you even know? Did you know that only with you I feel alive?" he asks, raising his eyebrow in question.

You don't know when he got so close, but he was standing in front of you now. Your brain could barely even register his words, your mouth agape as you watched him speak.

"I… I hope I occupy your mind like you occupy mine, [Name]. And, honestly, if you think about it… No one deserves you. You're mine." he looks down at you, a hint of finality in his tone as he says those words.

You blink, staring up at him, and you swear you can see a satisfied glint in his eyes at how long it takes you to finally speak up.

"Sebastian…" you start, and his eyebrows raise expectantly, making you swallow thickly as you struggled to find your words. "That's just a friend. With you it's… It's different."

"With me it's different?" he repeats, his eyes narrowing. The male's heart thumps loudly against his ribcage at your promising words, so loudly he's afraid you might hear it.

"Yes, it's… You don't like me, Seb. Not like that." you turn to look at the ground, trying to ignore the intense gaze fixed on you as you gnaw on your bottom lip.

You just kept saying all of the wrong things. Your words made his gaze darken, eyes narrowing further. The look on his face was as if you weren't the object of his affection, slowly bordering on obsession. It was as if you were a stranger, someone he merely viewed as prey.

"Not like that?" he repeats, scoffing. He licks his lips, running a hand through his hair in frustration. Sebastian leans down to your level, gazing right back into your eyes as he speaks. "Baby, I'd burn this world for you. Do I have to say it loud and clear? Do I have to specifically say that I like you, [Name]?" he tilts his head, his jaw tense with frustration. "Would you finally get it if I did that?"

You blink, your mouth agape at his words. You felt yourself trying to back away, to put distance between the two of you. His intense gaze was sending shivers down your spine, and you could feel the hair on your body stand up, fear coursing through your veins.

those men have military style hair cuts, short and neat, and they have pressed and laundered all black cloths. in the case of the dude on the left he has expensive and European looking cloths with a spotless luxurious leather jacket and trendy drop pants. he's also a natural blond or rich enough to not have blond roots showing. he's dressed expensive.

the guy on the right is dressed like he shops at the stores most people can afford or lower. they are matching, so they coordinated before hand.

if you look at their body types they are very different. the guy on the left is very clean cut, slender and looks camera ready. he is at this protest in front of a camera and he could not care less. he's relaxed and unbothered by being on film. this implies some level of experience being on film. he also has the rubber gloves on which is wiiieeeerrrd.

now the guy on the right in both his attitude about being on camera and his body type looks like he works a lower paying job and is excited to be seen. he works out A LOT and is unafraid/excited to be associated with hezbollah. and not just that, he is BURLY AND TALL. that guy looks like he works at a job with a lot of physical requirements. he doesn't eat or shop or live where the other guy does. he isn't a body builder bulking, he looks strong in a practical way. you may not have ever seen a bouncer but that guy looks way bigger and more physically active than a bouncer.

I was admittedly disappointed when Chappell decided not to endorse Kamala. And a lot of people are, and they're being vocal and honestly nasty about it. I do think it's of paramount importance that she win, because if the other guy gets in, then a lot of the things Chappell is passionate about (from drag to basic human rights for the LGBTQ+ community) are in serious jeopardy. And, as a Canadian, who can't vote in this election, but who's life will unquestionably be effected by who becomes the next President, I get upset when people don't take the right they've been given seriously. That's where the hate that Chappell has received is confusing and obnoxious, because even tho her motivations are really obvious to me, people really seem to have missed the boat on this one. Right away, people accused her of "both-siding" it, when she said that there are bad people on both sides. That's not both-siding it, you guys. People also accused her of doing it because she didn't want to lose fans, or upset her family or whatever... those people are also confused. She had to clarify today that she is not voting for Trump, and while she didn't say who she was voting for she def kinda implied that she's basically not happy with either choice for some real reasons. Chappell has made it very clear in the past that she is unhappy with her government's position and involvement on what's happening in Gaza and that they are complicit in aiding and supporting a genocide. And I think she's brave for sticking to that. For me, personally, I'd prefer it if she endorsed Kamala and helped ensure she ends up in charge—that would be best for me. But Chappell has already made it very clear that she's not gonna just do things because other people expect her to because she's a celebrity and there are unwritten rules that need to be followed. She's challenging so many of those rules (and I applaud and love her for it), and in this case, for her personally, she didn't feel like she could officially endorse anyone and she has perfectly reasonable reasons for doing that. I'm sad, I wish she'd do otherwise, but my admiration for her has only increased because she's clearly a deep thinker who does not make decisions lightly and is sticking to her values and beliefs. Why is Hera so hostile to Leto in a manner that she isn't with the other lovers of Zeus? I can't think of any other woman who was targeted so much by Hera. One could say she didn't want Leto to give birth because her children would be a competition to Hera's children, but why bother her even after she had already given birth? Is it because Leto herself is also a threat to Hera?

I don't think Leto would ever be a threat to Hera's role as the queen of the gods but Hera might see her as a competitor for Zeus' affection, even though I think Zeus would not marry someone else and replace Hera.

The twins are definitely a big reason why Hera begrudged Leto - it is outright stated in the Callimachus Hymn to Delos that the reason Hera especially targeted Leto was because she was told that Apollo would be dearer to Zeus than Ares is. Zeus is very proud of Artemis as well. As he himself puts it, he doesn't mind facing Hera's wrath for children like her.

But the continued hatred even after the birth of the twins (like sending Tityus to rape Leto) could have been for different reasons. This wasn't like one of those affairs Zeus would have with mortal women where he'd leave them behind once the child is conceived. Neither could Hera, despite her many attempts, get rid of Leto like she did with the other lovers. Not only did Leto give Zeus children that he loves dearly, she also stayed on Olympus despite Hera's hatred towards her (which isn't directed to any of Zeus' other divine mistresses, btw). It might have also been because Leto herself is dear to Zeus, if the way she's treated on Olympus is any proof. In the Homeric hymn to Apollo, Leto stands next to Zeus - in the Olympian assembly - to welcome their son. Hera is completely absent from the scene, as if Leto had taken her place even if temporarily. Now you could say this is because Apollo himself is such a powerful and glorious son in a way that no other son of Zeus is, so of course Leto would get such an honor (the hymn itself presents it this way).

But here's another instance - in the Iliad, when Hera goes to seduce Zeus, he is obviously very smitten but before getting into the action, he lists some of his lovers (I believe these were his favorite lovers, as a lot of others are not mentioned):

"for never has such desire for goddess or mortal woman so gripped and overwhelmed my heart, not even when I was seized by love for Ixion’s wife, who gave birth to Peirithous the gods’ rival in wisdom; or for Acrisius’ daughter, slim-ankled Danaë, who bore Perseus, greatest of warriors; or for the far-famed daughter of Phoenix, who gave me Minos and godlike Rhadamanthus; or for Semele mother of Dionysus, who brings men joy; or for Alcmene at Thebes, whose son was lion-hearted Heracles; or for Demeter of the lovely tresses; or for glorious Leto; or even for you yourself, as this love and sweet desire for you grips me now.’ (Book 14, trans. A. T. Murray)

Notice how when talking about most of them, he also mentions the children they bore to him but when Demeter and Leto are mentioned, he doesn't bring up their children at all despite them being some of the most accomplished kids of his. What's more, he takes Leto's name just before Hera's. I mean, this is an interpretation but it looks like not only did Zeus love Leto the most out of all his mistresses - giving her a place second to that of his wife, but also his love for her wasn't necessarily only because she gave him two amazing children.

Nonnus does something similar in the Dionysiaca (but this time Zeus is enamored with Persephone instead of Hera) but more notably, when Typhoeus attacks Olympus and Zeus is discouraged, Nike takes the form of Leto to encourage him and it's pretty telling of what Leto meant to Zeus.

One interesting similarity between Hera and Leto is that they both had a giant try to rape them. Porphyrion tried to violate Hera (Zeus inspired him to do this) and Tityus tried to violate Leto (upon Hera's order). Though both of them were killed, only Tityus got an eternal punishment in Tartarus of having his liver/heart eaten out by vultures so Zeus seems to have taken a greater offense at Tityus trying to assault Leto.

Again, I don't think Zeus would ever take anyone other than Hera as his permanent wife - she is irreplaceable to him. There's an entire myth about Hera leaving him and Zeus winning her back. Their relationship is obviously complex and involves all kinds of emotions including love and hate. But Leto is continually dear to him as well and that's something Hera can't do much about.

i hate when people portray michael and/or patrick as some kind of master manipulator who was terrible to shaun and stormy. like, in the past, michael sometimes got portrayed with little autonomy, or as childish and overly innocent in a weird way. that in itself is an issue with the treatment of mentally ill characters (infantilization), but the solution isn't to argue that he's actually a monster who only wanted to hurt and mislead people. the same goes for patrick. i don't enjoy the "goofy flirty mass murderer" interpretation for very similar reasons, because in the canon patrick did indeed do some wild shit but i think it's a stretch to say it was out of malice, except maybe towards eric lol

obviously there will be different views of these characters and this isn't meant to be gatekeep-y or anything, i'm just concerned with how certain portrayals can quickly slide into negative biases towards mental illness. i think if you're going on this route you might want to ask yourself why, and consider how it could make the mentally ill people within the fandom feel when they see their own symptoms portrayed by their peers as synonymous with being dishonest or manipulative

yknow I've been thinking about what dream looks for in friends and lovers and I've noticed that it's not necessarily people that are mean to him, but people that are direct. dream himself deals in metaphor and manipulation, it's simply what he is, so just about everything within his realm that he's encountering consistently will be such that as well. considering both his own tendencies, the environment it breeds, and his whole Thing about guilt and choice, it makes sense he would choose people who are clear and honest with him. he wants someone who will tell him how it is, but not what to do with that—even when it's not really what he wants, dream knows it's what he can need.
