Hey, so I live in that horrible state, and there's an important update. Keep in mind I don't know a whole lot about politics, but I did my best to relay what I know in a comprehensive way
The anti-trans bill she's protesting against is going to the second stage. She's still fighting it, but it's moving foreward. She still has a lot of legal tricks up her sleeve.
She and a surprising number of other nebraska senators have made objections that have yet to be heard and debated (ironically because of her filibuster) so that also stalls it.
I won't go into detail on the objections but the biggest is that the bill refuses to call it what it is. The bill in question (Nebraska LB574 if you want to do your own research) bans "gender altering" procedures for people under age 19. The medically correct term is gender affirming. Fun fact, medicaid covers gender affirming treatments in certain cases for "individuals under the age of 21" so the bill creates an issue between federal and state law! Fun! I know I said I wouldn't go into detail, but there's a lot of issues with this bill from a legal and medical standpoint.
So why am I making this reply at all? Like I said, I live here, and as funny as this situation is, the reality is that it's a shit show. The bill blatantly ignores federal law and medical fact and ethics just because a handful of people are that determined to hate us.
I'm not saying you have to, and I know this will only reach so far, but when other states or countries have made or proposed bills like this, there's a call to action that is really easy to do: Call the people voting on this. Write to the people voting on this. Flood their mailbox and voicemail with the voices of concerned citizens. You don't have to live in the state. You don't even need to live in the same country.
I know that there are people like me in this horrible state, but we've been fighting a long slow battle for basic acceptance that we still haven't really won. My hometown is having their third ever pride this year, that's how far behind we are. Please please please do what you can. At the very least, we need the people in power here to know we exist under their jurisdiction and that we are not ok with decisions like this.
Nebraska hasn't passed a single bill this year because one lawmaker keeps filibustering in protest of an anti-trans bill: 'I will burn this session to the ground'
Damn. I thought she was just gonna up and make a fuss and her swearing to protect trans kids was a bunch of empty words (again).
But no. She's one-woman filibustering the entire Nebraska legislature into a complete standstill until they agree to protect the rights of trans kids.
She was 100% serious when she said she'd make it as painful for everyone as it is for trans kids. Gahddamn.
This is why small elections matter. She's not a country wide senator or president or shit. She's just a local official representing District 6 in Nebraska.
This is why the "smaller" elections between the presidential elections matter.

Bluey, season 2 episode 9, Sleepytime
It’s my favorite episode now.
I watched it today for the first time this morning and it uses my favorite song. I will never forget this feeling. I wish I can re-experience this feeling again.
My mind was blown when I heard the score. I wish everyone knew this feeling. The story and the song together it’s just healing my soul. I think I’m gonna go cry now

VERSE — MOVIE ( CONTAINS SPOILERS & CANON DIVERGENT, tw for canon-typical themes & suicide mention )
just to get straight to the point : it's mainly canon divergent in the sense that i will be altering details in order to make mike an afton. do i think this is going to happen in the movie timeline? no. do i think it's more likely that they're going to explain the oddly personal kidnapping through mirroring the emilys? probably. but it's MY michael afton blog and i can put on my tinfoil hat as much as i want about it. of course i am willing to adapt based on other's info / preferences but given that this isn't my main canon anyway it is meant for those that are interested.
Mike thought he knew everything there was to know about what happened to his family: what he was never told is who his real father was. He was too young to remember anything about William Afton before his mom separated herself from him entirely ( one night stand, breakup, what have you, i'm not picky- ), so he always thought of the father he grew up with as his dad, the reality never changed anything about that.
Until he was twelve years old and Garrett went missing, and everything fell apart. William followed the Schmidts there, taking Garrett in a targeted attack ( whether or not he was trying to grab Mike, took him out of spite, anything else is also flexible ). Everything grew solemn and tense, each of the Schmidts lost in their own individual grief. Slowly, they stopped having dinners together, stopped going out as a family, stopped being able to feel like things were normal. The grief and guilt only added to Mike's developing anger issues and depression. Although it wasn't on purpose nor with any malicious intent, his dad was the more distant of his parents at the time, serving as the first hint towards his biological parentage and simply because as much as he cared for mike, he was grappling with losing his biological kid ( think tse henry- well meaning but drowning in grief enough for the child to pick up on it ).
This is where Abby comes in, where the Schmidts have another kid in an attempt to feel like a normal family again. It almost seems to work, although there is still that underlying sense of collective grief. Mike was older by then, too ( while he graduates high school, he either doesn't go to college at all or doesn't finish it ).
Their mom dies and the brief sense of possible stability disappears again. It's when Mike is staying at home again for the funeral/to help with Abby that their father commits suicide, unable to take the grief. Mike has had custody of Abby since then.
The events proceed as they did in the movie, William's recognition of Mike in the office not only stemming from the kidnapping but the fact that it's his kid, although Mike doesn't find anything out beyond the fact that it's the man who took Garrett. There is potential for more hints towards this in past interactions with his aunt or birth records or even his dynamic with Vanessa, but for the most part this specific realization is left open.
Following the movie's events, he... does come home to his aunt in the living room. After reporting her death, Mike actually goes back to Freddy's one more time to get security footage in order to prove his innocence. Afterwards, he does his best to hold down another job to keep taking care of Abby in peace, but something about Freddy's gives him the sense that he'll come back to make sure nothing like this happens again.

i'm never knowingly going to reblog a post that includes the phrase 'touch grass,' and that's not because i don't think it can be psychologically beneficial to get in some outdoor time if possible—i went for a walk earlier! it was great!—or to take a break from conversations that are getting you wound up, but because i think that particular wording generally reveals two things:
first, that the writer is speaking not from a place of genuine concern and sympathy, but from judgmental impatience à la 'get therapy,' which—i too have felt judgmental and impatient in my time, god knows! but when i feel that way i try to go unpack those feelings in private with a thoughtful friend, instead of pretending they constitute a source of wisdom or a helpful sort of energy to direct at people, you know? and i'm definitely not particularly interested in boosting a ventpost from someone else—who pretty clearly hasn't bothered to take the breather they're urging on others, if they're making little digs like that—as if it were actually sincere, carefully-reasoned advice.
and second, that the writer's argument embraces some seriously sloppy assumptions, which pretty immediately undermines my trust in the rest of their analysis—i mean, there's absolutely no guarantee someone's local scene will be any less parochial, just because it's playing out irl! there's also not actually a clean divide between 'people who spend time in the Real World' and 'people who spend time on the internet, which is for porn losers,' as demonstrated by a number of phenomena including, again, the aforementioned grass-recommenders' own presence right here on tumblr…
anyway. obviously we all have our own particular lines we draw around particular rhetoric that bugs us! these are just some reasons why that particular phrasing bugs me.
#language#metatumbling#like. if what you mean is 'your stance would be totally incongruous outside the microcommunity you're speaking to'?#say that!#but also—it's fine to speak to the state of affairs in a microcommunity‚ actually#you just need to define your parameters#but like. so do people who are speaking to Broader Culture bc like. *which* broader culture.#even if you mean American Cishet Culture there are. so many kinds. new york ≠ nebraska.#but anyway it's just like. stop fucking making (and reblogging) these implicit ad hominem arguments#about how people who disagree with you must be idiots and losers because they don't get out enough#if they really are wrong you ought to be able to argue against them without resorting to digs any real leftist ought to be ashamed of#and if spending all one's time in the physically-embodied socially-embedded world really stopped people from being wrong…#well. pretty sure a lot fewer people would be wrong about things‚ if that were true.#anyway i left this to rot in drafts last week for prolixity reasons#and like. it remains guilty of those crimes but they don't render its fundamental assertion untrue.#anyway fundamentally this is the sort of thing you immediately sound like a 'terminally online' loser for protesting and i realize that#but like. if we refuse to open conversational doors because we're scared of the shame bucket someone juvenile balanced on top of them…#fuck that. i decline to live in fear of implicit rhetorical bully tactics.

not to start the year off losing my mind on social media once again but we have been asking for a genocide to stop for 86 days. palestinians have been asking for the end of their annihilation for 75 years, but the world at large has finally been asking with them its most powerful and gaza's own genocider and the west bank's occupier to please stop genociding and occupying and to please interfere and stop this for 86 days. the world has rallied in unprecedented numbers to ask and make demands and 20,000+ people have been killed for 86 unanswered days. not to sound too crazy in the face of 20,000+ dead people but 2024 might be the time for the or else
