to be clear i don’t have a problem really with stories where the main character is already a writer and it’s just a background element, especially when the book is not portrayed as this Big Healing Accomplishment. i like stories with writers in them!

but this specific version of the trope just screams middle school to me. it is the kind of thing i wrote in middle school. ugh. the frame story where all along the book you’re reading was written by the protag about their life…..awful. awful!

and yes i know this happens irl, actually quite often. i know MANY people want to write their own memoir (i was one of them). it’s just so cheap as a trope.

especially ESPECIALLY when publishing is such a brutal industry and i am/am friends with people who have tried and failed to break into it, some several times, and it’s just….it feels bad. when stories like this make that process seem easy and hardly worth commenting on. which it can be, if you’re the right person with the right book at the right moment for the industry—or you’re rich with connections.

maybe i’m just jealous of fictional characters. but i still hate this trope

there is one book/fanfic trope i irrationally hate, HATE, with a burning, seething passion, and it makes me feel bad but i have DNF’d over it and i have finished reading fics with half the enthusiasm, grumbling internally over this dumb stupid awful thing they added in

anyway it’s when the protagonist decides to ✨write a book about their trauma✨

its usually a memoir or some such about their experiences (weirdly common: therapist or close friend suggests journaling to cope, journal becomes novel), but sometimes it’s like, a kid’s book loosely based on their experience, etc etc, its always a book about their trauma and i want to rip my hair out

I just joined Tinder again to make friends and find people in my area to hang out with and finding common interests. But, I mean, if romance happens, then so be it. But that is not what I am looking for. I am a school/career oriented boy. I am not a romance/marriage/kids oriented boy. At ALL. My schooling and career (and Echo) are my life. I hate romance and I am quite happy being single. I just want friends. So hopefully, people will look past my hideous, fat looks and swipe right coz they want to get to know me. . .sigh. Probs won’t happen. But I am going to try it out for a couple weeks. See what happens. /shrugs

fic you’re most proud of: I’m proud of myself for persisting with iwltwgq, because it isn’t easy. It kind of ran away from me plot-wise at some point, but I pulled it back in and I’m patching it towards its end. It was a wild ride. But the one that I’m really proud of myself for is the Hamilton fics. One was whimsy and one was a promise, and both are hilarious to me. I know, I know, patting myself on the back. But okay.

favorite comment on your writing: 2 kinds of favorite comments: the kind that catch on to the Hamilton references that I sneak into every single Shadowhunters fic that I write, and long ranty comments. But honestly, the best ones are the ones that quote a line from the fic and then proceed to flail about it.

best flame: there was a commenter who would pick apart every chapter plot-wise. Like, continuity really really concerned her. That was the closest I got to a flame, but man, I waited for her comments because they helped me organize the plot in my head.

what surprised you about your writing this year?: the sheer volume. I just stared at the number of words I wrote and I still can’t wrap my head around it.

do you have any writing regrets/things you would do differently? I would world-build a bit more. Especially with iwltwgq. A better built world lends itself to easier writing.

how many WIPs do you have? Do you plan to finish them?: 2 published - iwltwgq, indeed I want to finish it; and the 4 seasons one, closed out the light coming in.

did you write any original fiction this year?: I gave NaNoWriMo a try. Didn’t stick. But in my defense, I started a new job.

what are your writing goals for the new year?: Finish my WIPs, possibly start mapping out some original fiction.

And my own addition: I’ve met some phenomenal people this past year who have done nothing but inspire me, and I have them to thank for encouraging me on my writing path. It’s not just fanfic, it’s creation, and it’s pretty damn liberating to be back on the horse, especially with people who are as passionate about it as I am. <3
