you just know they had to make up a reason for wilson to be away for house's infarction because if he was there things would have been different
#house md#better? maybe. but not necessarily#because even the best outcome here isn't exactly wonderful#because either way house was coming out of that ordeal disabled and that even without pain#would change him from whatever he was like before#i want to be very clear i do not believe in sunshine and roses here it's just not in the cards for house md#i do not know what sort of change wilson's presence would bring but i know it would be SOMETHING#like would he have backed house up for the bypass thing?? would he have argued with stacy??#ough. isn't there one thing in house's records that lists wilson as both his doctor and next of kin#or something. i saw that once i'm sure#i'm getting off track i was trying to google that for so long i don't even remember the point i was trying to make

now newt you may be thinking you’ve decided to double major and have a minor in your greatest act of nomative determinism yet how could you POSSIBLY have time to keep your mind sharp and sexy with real books and still read fanfic? well i’m going to college in a pandemic, that’s why. hardest battles sexiest soldiers and all that. here’s some white boy tuesday.
Overworked by Ferrety
WHAT a good good depiction of a meltdown and an even better autistic hermann. great fresh voice that feels true to character, the buildup is well paced so that when the h/c does hit it’s well-earned and cathartic, and all in all some really good classic lab era whump
double back by @ghostpressure
ghost drift translated to prose is really hard to pull off, so big kudos for keeping things poetic and mind-fucky, but still coherent and easy to understand. i love the little crystalized moments we get that tell us how clearly hermann is cataloguing them, which is a great detail to show inner thoughts rather than telling. i love love love the dialogue; it bounces the line between proper banter and the more serious, introspective tone the fic takes very well
All Clear by @trifoliate-undergrowth (NSFW)
this bitch has the TROPES. hate makeouts? arguments turn to more? trapped somewhere together and tension rises as they’re forced to wait it out? WALL SLAM HELLO. never before have i actually seen so many classic newmann faves for nsfw in one place and it’s like the scholastic book fair for adults. very cute voice for hermann as well, because oh yeah, he really is a dude in his late 20s and not actually an 80 year old turtle in a sweater
heat of the moment by @kingeiszler (NSFW)
if any of you so much as LOOK at me i will stomp you to death with my hooves. trans horny newt rights also i was NOT expecting that angst with a happy ending moment at the end but like fuck. this fic is packing about as much good stuff as the front of newt’s hot topic jeans. hermann gottlieb god of WAP
Dress Code by @arcanemoody
there are not enough fics centered around newt and his self-image post-pru and ESPECIALLY not enough dealing with him finding his style again. i think this concept is such a good one to explore nonbinary newt through (if i get a single “kinnie” in my askbox i’m writing a fic where stan twitter outs the precursors as possessing newt because they made an account and popped off. do not test me you all know i’m fucking crazy but i’m free) since so much of gender presentation is in clothes, along with the other stuff the precursors clearly took over in uprising. and then i know we all love to interpret the “whoever will take him” as newt being bi but i’m always glad when it’s noted in fic, and the way it’s used to develop his character works very well
The Geiszler-Gottlieb Wedding by Goldmoth
if for nothing else please go to the second chapter of this fic and read the playlist because i literally fell out of my bed laughing and had a bump on the back of my head the size of a cherry. worth it.
Baby, I’m a fool for you by @that-one-fandom-chick
wingman vanessa supremacy. twilight soundtrack supremacy. hermann meeting newt while he’s in a band SUPREMACY also with a lot of these fics combining it with “first meeting” everything usually goes wrong, but it was so refreshing to have that extremely cute diner scene at the end.... the old friend mitski vibes of it all........ gay hands hermann rights
Now We Have the Salad by MnemonicMadness
i wanna say right off the bat this concept tickles me so deeply because if a non diabetic person switched bodies with a t1d (moi) i would have to helicopter parent 90% of everything they did if i didn’t want to, like. die. or at least have a fucked a1c. anyway this is a really great twist on the body swap trope that takes full advantage of hermann’s disability as a plot point, and with the added variety of being post-uprising. that last bit is what makes the story work, actually, because if it were simply pr1 era, you wouldn’t really have an excuse for newt so desperately wanting to give hermann time in a pain-free body without it coming off as pitying and insensitive. but tack on the guilt of the precursors, and what they did to hermann, and you have the perfect justification for newt’s actions. smart writing! and some good old mortifying ordeal of being known that stays tasteful in context
i’m drawn to you, honey, like the sea to the fisherman’s daughter by @campgender
i love a good post pr1 beach house fic i cannot lie! “newt and hermann don’t have ppdc jobs anymore but they sure do have trauma!” fics have sort have gone out of fashion post-events that occurred in 2018, but this one is a very good blast from the past. i love the beginning, which is such a fucking accurate depiction of how people used to having to be hyper competent in traumatic situations react to it being all over abruptly. i LOVE LOVE the ending, it’s so true to character and what i hope a good pr2 would have done for newt. this thing is chock-full of so many good lines, like “Maybe I don’t know how to live with nice things.” fucking MOOD and “’If you’re good enough at what you do,’ Hermann says firmly, ‘which you are, people tend to pretend as if the rest of it doesn’t exist.’” is so so accurate to the academia climb when you’re disabled, let me fucking tell you. great moment after great moment.
I’ve Got Your Letter by @coloredpencilroses
A if i rec this then ten things i hate about you au in my mouth please. please. please. anyway this fic is SO fun and good i love the writing style and how the humor is fun and consistent throughout both povs, the slowburn keeps things agonizing but has enough fun characters and plot to keep you invested and not just begging for an end so you can skip to it, TENDO KING OF BRAIN CELLS, and i haven’t seen you’ve got mail so i’m literally saving it until this thing finishes to keep the suspense. excellent fic for autumn
now usually this is where i plug my most recent work but since #theprecursorsareoverparty has spawned a more vitriol and hateful reaction than i ever could have dreamed, read i never liked that ending either and get yourself some culture. and stan tom stoppard

Hi! I hope you're doing well. My prompt for you is newt x leta x theseus summer at the scamanders :)
Thank you so much for sending this in and I’m sorry its taken so long. I’m still trying to work out the dynamic of this trio especially in their younger years. Also, I’m throwing Theseus’ canon age out the window because I find it too unbelievable from the films that he’s older than the rest of the characters let alone THAT much older than them so in this prompt he’s maybe a couple of years older.
Newt’s No Good, Very Bad Day…
Newt burst into the kitchen, slipping slightly as oneleg of his overlong pyjama pants slid under his foot causing him to bang intothe side of the door. He balanced himself with both hands on the doorframe ashis mind and body protested at the abrupt movement considering he had been fastasleep twenty seconds ago before falling out of his bed in a tangle ofblankets.
His sleepy, hazel eyes met Leta’s reproachful, amberones and he bit his lip with a tiny, apologetic smile that tended to acquit himof any wrongdoings. She rolled her eyes but the smile she was trying to biteback, and the small shake of her head, was evidence enough that he was forgivenas she drew her attention back to the stove where she was looking comically outof place holding the handle of a frying pan but with an awkward, unfamiliargrip as though she were holding a paintbrush.
Newt noticed she was still in the pyjama shirt andshorts she had been wearing when he had last bid her goodnight. As she had beensitting cross-legged on the spare bed when he had done so, he only now realisedhow nearly scandalously short they were, far shorter than the apron that hadmost likely been forcefully tied around her. Newt felt his cheeks redden and heswallowed and averted his gaze intently on the plates that were levitating fromthe cupboard to the kitchen table. These intrusive, discourteous thoughts hadseemingly come out of nowhere lately and were only becoming more frequent asthey became older.
Newt had been so fixated on the pattern of the tablecloth that he had tuned out completely and missed his mother’s re-entry intothe kitchen and subsequent ‘good morning, dear’.
“Earth to Newt!” his brother waved in amusement as hecame through the front door kicking off his muddy boots so they bounced andfell to the floor in a mess that made Mrs Scamander tut. He was also still inhis pyjamas, as he normally allowed himself to be on Sunday mornings, even ifthat for him only consisted of checkered pants, and a large Quidditch t-shirt.
“Hmm-what?” Newt looked up from the doorway he wasstill standing in, startled out of his daze.
Theseus shook his head with a laugh. “Well, you do abetter job as a door than you do of your chores.”
Leta had frowned at that, her awkward grip tighteningon the pan handle and shooting a scathing look at the older Scamander as shedid to anyone who dared to say anything less than complimentary about Newt inher presence.
“I just ended up repairing the fence myself thismorning. Honestly if they weren’t so attached to you, we’d be chasing escapedHippogriffs every second day.”
Leta smiled at that and looked at Newt warmly and fullof admiration and he tried to form a small laugh but whatever escaped wassomething between a squeak and a snort that he would replay mortifyingly overand over in his head when trying to fall asleep for the next few weeks.
“Sit down, Newton,” his mother urged from the sink andhe fell into the nearest chair before he could come up with any other ridiculousnoises.
“While you were sleeping in…” Mrs Scamander said toher youngest son as he stared at an old copy of Witch Weekly on the table. “…Loleta and I have been going through ‘Witch Weekly’s Twenty Housekeeping Hacks forYoung Witches to Impress Prospective Husbands’.”
Newt winced and cursed himself for sleeping in whileTheseus burst out in laughter and earned a contemptuous look from his motherwho snatched the magazine up and stuffed it into the pocket of her own apron.Newt knew his mother, who had longed for a daughter, would be overly enamoredby Leta and he had, up until this morning, done a fairly good job of steering herout of sight at the mere mention of a hairbrush or petticoat.
“She doesn’t know how to cook pancakes!” the woman said defensively to her sons as if this factalone was scandalous enough, they would understand immediately the importanceof this ordeal.
“Of course not,” Theseus joked, placing a jug ofpumpkin juice and cups on the table. “Elite purebloods don’t eat - they’resustained by pure human souls.”
Newt and Mrs. Scamander’s simultaneous horrifiedsplutters and admonishments were drowned out by each other while Leta suppresseda chuckle.
“I’ve always had house-elves and no one ever taught met-” she said to Mrs. Scamander who tutted.
“Well, that won’t do at all. No harm in a ladyacquiring some basic housekeeping skills. Hogwarts has always been neglectfulon that front.”
Leta didn’t have the heart to tell the kind woman thatthe only lady-like skills her family expected from her were little more thanlaying on her back and producing as many heirs as possible for a man of theirchoosing twice her age until she either died in childbirth or was sufficientlysapped of any youthful beauty and replaced with whichever poor girl was set tofollow her.
Newt immediately sensed her melancholy and stoppedspinning his empty cup to glance up at her in concern. She, in turn, could feelhis anxiety and smiled reassuringly before handing him his plate.
“The first for you, of course. My future husband isburning with jealously.”
“Thank you,” he smiled weakly, not finding it in hisheart to find her joke even the slightest bit amusing despite her playfulness. She stretched as high as her tiny stature would allow to reach the honey on theshelf and set it down beside Newt and squeezed his upper arm in a far morediscreet version of the hug that she’d usually throw herself into each morning. As a testament to how long she’d been in both the Scamander boy’s life, Letawas well versed on their preferences and had no difficulty selecting a lemonfrom the fruit bowl and throwing it perhaps a little too forcefully at Theseus’head. Though, he managed to catch it effortlessly but looked no less offended.“I hope your future husband is an aptKeeper, or a Seeker at the least, or the poor sod’s going to make do without aneye for the rest of his life.”
Mrs. Scamander looked pleased with her work as Leta titteredabout the table setting everything up trying to ignore the concealed laughterof Theseus, and occasionally Newt who couldn’t help himself. They knew this wasjust an overexaggerated show for Mrs. Scamander and there was nothing moreutterly hilarious and nonsensical than Leta Lestrange in a paisley patternedapron and furrowed eyebrows deciding where domestic etiquette dictated thesugar bowl should be placed.
As Leta leaned over him to fill his cup, swatting awayhis mortified attempts to do it himself, Newt poured all his attention intoshoveling pancake into his mouth as enthusiastically as possible in an attemptto absolutely not think about the dip of her neck to her shoulder and todisable his ability to talk so the urge to tell her she looked especiallypretty this morning blossomed into anything other than a pesky, internalthought.
Mrs. Scamander, happy with her morning’s efforts, wentoutside after spotting their neighbours across the road.
“What do you think?” Leta asked quietly and hopefullywhile setting his glass down and Newt was entirely aware of her hair brushinghis shoulder and ear which would normally make him shudder had it been anyoneelse so close but instead, he felt like he could melt into his chair and thatseemed a far scarier feeling.
He swallowed quickly and choked slightly.“Beautiful…b-beautiful pancakes. Really good,” he gave her a thumbs up beforehe could stop himself, but she smiled so bright he thought he might ascend.
She turned away quickly and went back to the stovewhere she seemed far more enthusiastic pouring the batter in, glowing from theencouragement of the only person whose opinion she valued. And then of coursethere was…
“Good god, Lestrange, that’s bloody awful!” Theseusgagged, spitting his first bite out into his napkin and Leta folded her armswith the spatula in her hand looking affronted.
“Newt likes it!”
Theseus chortled before standing up and taking hisglasses out his pyjama pants pocket and cleaning them on his shirt. “Newt wouldeat a bowl of ash if you wished it so.” It seemed he too had then noticedLeta’s nightclothes, or lack thereof, once the clarity of his vision wasrestored. “I think nearly every teenage boy would if you served it to themhalf-naked.”
“I’m in my pyjamas!” she snapped. “And you didn’t eat it!”
“I respect my stomach far too much for that. I mighthave managed it if it had been either burnt or raw…but you have somehow managedboth,” he said stepping over to assess the damaged and Leta frowned down at thefrypan.
Theseus reached from behind her, turning down theswitches. “Merlin, it’s up way too high.”
“Doesn’t that just mean it cooks faster?”
Newt wasn’t sure why but for some reason watching themmade something twist violently in the pit of his stomach and he nearly wincedat the suddenness of it. He didn’t hide it well, or Leta’s instincts were asgood as his were about her, because she noticed immediately, pushing Theseusout the way, with far too much dramatic force, and rushing over to him.
“Great, now I’ve made you sick!” she cried outsnatching the plate away with one hand and pushing his hair back from hisforehead with the other to feel his temperature like she had learned to do withthe baby murtlaps.
Mrs Scamander came back through the door lookingrather cheery and bright and interrupting the scene of Theseus lookingscandalized over being pushed over and Leta practically in Newt’s lap, in aworry, and completely mistaking why his cheeks were so warm under her palms.
“Newt, my darling,” she said to her son. “If you’regoing to vomit, do it quickly and before you get changed. Theseus please gofetch that nice shirt we got for your interview…”
Newt frowned. “Whatfor?”
“My funeral,” Theseus answered, swishing water in hismouth before spitting it out in the sink. “It’s too late for a beazor, littlebrother. Just put me in the ground before Lestrange can pin me up like one ofher beetles.”
“It was for a decomposition observation!” she snappedun-sashing her apron.
“It’s serial killer crafts,” Theseus said as he walkeddown the hall to his bedroom. “And it’s why the other students refused to sharea dormitory with you.”
Mrs Scamander ignored their argument and rinsed her handsbefore carding them through Newt’s hair much to his protest.
“The Prewett’s are back from their trip to Spain forthe rest of the holidays. We thought it might be a nice idea for you andPennilyn to take out the new hippogriff’s so they can stretch their wings…”
“With PennilynPrewett?” Newt scowled in a way that made Leta fail to suppress a snort andchoke on her juice.
Mrs Scamander glowered at the pair of them.
“Yes, Newton. And I will do well to remind you that wework alongside and get along very well with the Prewetts. I expect you to benothing but a perfect gentleman today.”
“He isn’t capable of anything else,” Leta smiledfondly, reaching to squeeze his hand on top of the table.
Newt stared at her for a moment too long.“I-bluh-we-but we-we were supposed to…yes!” he turned triumphantly to hismother. “Leta and I have plans to go and observe the mooncalves today.”
“Mooncalves only come out during a full moon,” Theseussaid walking back, dressed for the day now, and handing his mother a freshlypressed shirt.
“How do youknow that?” Leta took her hand off Newt’s and turned in her chair.
“Urh, it’s a mooncalf. You don’t have to froth at the mouth at the mention of anything fourlegged to understand preschool zoology.”
Leta frowned skeptically.
“…and you and Newt were talking about it through thewalls at 4am this morning,” he mumbled into his cup of tea still clearly annoyedat their interruption of his sleep.
“That’s that then, dear,” Mrs Scamander shoved theshirt at Newt. “Go put this on and then bring me that hair stuff your brotherbought when that muggle girl started working at the teashop down the streetlast year.”
“I think just saying ‘hair lotion’ would have helpedhim out enough,” Theseus muttered as Leta lit up like a Christmas tree and Newttrudged to his room in defeat.
“Poor thing,” Leta sighed after him, curling herfingers around the cup of tea she had barely noticed Theseus put down in frontof her.
“Well, if he had done a little better on his O.W.L’s,she probably wouldn’t be trying to pimp him out to our feed suppliers.”
“Excuse me,” Leta snapped defensively. “He received Acceptable in nearly all his subjectsand I personally don’t think his Astronomy essay was marked correctly. I’vealready sent a strongly worded letter to-”
“Lestrange, one of the few, simple joys in my life whenon break is not having the moral obligation to put out the fires you two start– figuratively and literally. I would be ecstatic to not hear about any plannedshenanigans until well past July. Honestly, some of the schemes I’ve had themisfortune of overhearing during the past week alone are enough to make my haircurl…”
“Figurately, I assume. I wager we would have to blowup the castle to decently contend with your muggle wooing hair gel.”
They both sipped their tea.
Newt came in, sleeves flopping hopelessly despite his half-heartedattempts to roll them up. He looked so deflated with the mornings turn ofevents and Leta tried to smile reassuringly as she stood to help.
She knitted her eyebrows together thoughtfully as shecast a charm that produced a length of thread from the tip of her wand thatdivided into sections and began stitching itself along the hems of the shirt tomake it fit Newt perfectly.
“Volume 10, issue 4 of Witch Weekly,” she answered wryly to his entranced look. “Not quiteyour mothers craftmanship I’m afraid but at least the shirt isn’t wearing youanymore.”
Newt glanced down and touched the delicate, nearlyinvisible stitching on one of the sleeves. It was true that it was a littleless even and straight then the usual tailoring he’d recognise from his schoolshirts and the stitches we’re looped like interlocking L’s.
“After taking out the new hippogriffs, what else doyou and your betrothed have planned for the day?” Leta asked teasingly as shestood on tip toes to fix his collar folded the wrong way.
“She is not my betrothed,”Newt scrunched his nose up and Leta chuckled before sighing endearingly.
“She is verybeautiful,” she mused with an encouraging and hopeful smile up at him. Newt’sshoulders fell and he sat back down in his chair staring at the tableclothglumly. Leta’s gentle encouragement, although good natured, made him feel asthough all the air had left his lungs in place of something far heavier and uncomfortable.
Leta sat beside him slowly, her eyes swimming withconcern but her smile was still bright. “But it’s just this one time and if itis truly awful, at least you trying will appease your mother and hopefully shewon’t be as cross when if she finds out we brou-” she stopped suddenly andglanced over at Theseus who was scraping the mud off his boots. He closed hiseyes and looked up to the ceiling, quietly muttering ‘not til well past July’ again.
Leta took the bottle of hair lotion from Newt’s handand lobbed it to Theseus who, again, caught it expertly but no less accusatory.
“He’ll need it,” Leta winked at Newt who didn’tunderstand the joke. “…and besides,” she messed up his hair from the neatattempt Mrs Scamander had made. “This looks much better.”
Newt couldn’t help but smile back a little. He knewthat Pennilyn had about as much interest in his company as he had hers and evenless interest in hippogriffs or any kind of creatures. Her aversion to gettingdirty and Newt’s aversion to…people in general had hampered any hope of themplaying together as children. They had exchanged polite greetings on the oddand painful occasion they crossed paths during school break and at school, sheavoided him like dragonpox and Leta even more so. He couldn’t help but feelperhaps their morning of forced chore-sharing would potentially be moreunpalatable for her than even himself but she was polite, at least, and thesooner he appeased his mother, the sooner he could get back to Leta and theirplans.
“Newt!” Mrs Scamander exclaimed exasperatedly as shewalked back in. “Now isn’t the time for a tea party! Hurry now, please. Don’tforget to put them back in their enclosure once you are both finished. Anddon’t feel the need to hurry back. I’ve put some sickles in your bag incase youboth go get some hot chocolate.”
Leta went back to her tea to hide her amused smile andNewt began to grow sour with his best friends surprising unhelpfulness.
“Maybe Leta should accompany us,” Newt piped up nottaking his annoyed look off Leta as he spoke and feeling less guilty aboutthrowing her under the best with him after her endless smirking. “Pennilynisn’t as confident with the hippogriffs and I could use the help.”
Mrs Scamander wiped her hands on her apron withoutlooking at him.
Even with her hesitation at such a strange andunlikely companionship early on, she had grown to foster and appreciate thevery close friendship Newt had with Leta Lestrange. She had also grown to loveand care for Leta herself and had witnessed the girl blossom from an ungainly,scabby-kneed child into a strikingly beautiful young woman. She was also notunaware of her son noticing this also.
She had hoped that the two could remain uncomplicatedand peaceful in the fascinating bubble in which they managed to coexist, somehow separate from their two impossibly different worlds. But a bubble is abubble after all, and Mrs Scamander knew such a place, heartbreakingly so,could not exist for the impossible pair once their education finished and they wouldreturn to their respective worlds. This was further complicated by the changeshe had noticed in her son’s heart and she felt it would be kindest, and safestin Leta’s case, to stomp out this budding potential before either child got hurt…orless tolerant relatives were to take notice.
“I was going to ask Loleta to accompany Theseusinto town today for some errands, actually.”
“Well, you could build a whole world from the thingsyou were going to do but, thankfully, we live in this world,” Theseussaid not looking up from his book. “The world in which that doesn’t happen, andTheseus maintains a decent blood pressure and an as good as to be expected underthe circumstances morning.”
Mrs Scamander looked warningly at her eldest son. “Ifyou want either of those things, Theseus, you’ll do what I ask and you’ll do itwith a smile.”
She felt quite safe with this arrangement. Despite thefact that Leta had been a part of Theseus’ life just as long as she had Newt’s,the pair had instead grown to a fond, comfortable dislike of each other. And eventhough she was often horrified by their squabbling, she knew Theseus was theonly person who from the very beginning had never been impressed, disgusted, mystified, or wary of who she was. Mrs Scamander thought Leta could professherself as the great Merlin himself in disguise and Theseus wouldn’t look upfrom his book.
“That’s no problem,” Leta said sweetly to MrsScamander. “Anything to help.”
“You look lovely,” Leta told Newt reassuringlysqueezing his palm hanging by his side. “I’ll be here when you get back.”
“As will I,” Theseus said before turning to his mother.“Hopefully not in several preservation jars in Lestrange’s trunk but if so bethe case know that you brought this upon us.”
Theseus and Leta watched from the kitchen window asNewt stood dejectedly fiddling with his sleeves next to his mother as she chattedanimatedly with another woman who was equally adorned with a quiet and unenthusiasticteenager by her side.
Leta sighed deeply, fiddling with her necklace.
“Good lord, Lestrange, he’s going on a date notheading off to war.”
He’s too good foreither. “There’s little difference to Newt.”
“In that he would fare just as well in either, then Ifear you’re right.”
“Theseus Scamander and admitting that I’m right. Isn’tthat one of the signs of the apocalypse?”
Theseus scoffed. “It couldn’t come fast enough. Getyour coat. Hopefully it hits before we arrive in the main street and thetownspeople can rest peacefully in the blissful unawareness of Leta Lestrange.”
She rolled her eyes, walking to the bedroom to getdressed and yelling loud enough for him to hear. “Apocalypse or not, I willdrag myself, bloody and battered, to glimpse the muggle teashop girl responsiblefor this county’s annual hair product sales.”
“I don’t think it’s your type of place, Lestrange. It’scosy and whimsical with soft music and a lovely assortment of tea. There’s nohopes, dreams, and animal bones on the menu, if you could believe it.”
“I can actually,” Leta said returning to the kitchendressed warmly in her coat, scarf, and boots. “I’m noticing the lack of elitepureblood-friendly cafes in this area. Nary a blood sacrifice Sunday in sight!”
“They favour poetry readings on Sunday nights, I’mafraid. It’s quite unaccommodating.”
“Well, your hometown is getting a grim one-star in myreview for the Sacred 28 Sentinal’s lifestyle section.”
“And right before our Sadistic Blood Purity SpringBig Bash Festival? Have you no heart?” he offered his arm to her as they steppedout on to the slippery pavement.
“For practical purposes yes,” Leta said linking her armswith his. “But you see it’s two sizes smaller than the average wizards.”
“Ah, it’s probably just a defect from the less thanancient incestuous genealogy. You’re not to blame, Lestrange.”
“I’ll remember to remind you of that the next time Isay something inflammatory,” Leta mused. “Surely it can’t be helped, you know, inmy unfortunate condition and all.”
“Well then, I imagine I’ll be reminded several timesbefore we reach the end of this path.”

Without Love {Draco Malfoy Oneshot}
Wordcount: 1939 Synopsis: When you are at your darkest hour, in a world without light, you get help before all hope has faded.
The room that you were in had no windows, so you could not even begin to guess if it was morning, afternoon or night - or how long you have been locked in there without your wand. You had tried to count the hours but you eventually became distracted by the Death Eaters who had come into the dungeon and crucio’d you for the fun of it. Except for the magic that was in you despite your muggle parents, you had nothing to offer them - so they just used you as a toy.
You were recovering from a particularly rough session when the door opened once more. Your back stiffened and your muscles tensed in fear of another curse being sent your way, but the person at the door was quiet, except for breathing. It was somehow worse anticipating the pain than it happening quickly.
“You need to eat something, it’s been two days,” A male voice rang out. You stayed huddled on the floor, holding your empty stomach. You could barely remember the last time you had eaten - it had seemed like a week ago. “Your food is getting cold, hurry up.”
Draco Malfoy, you realized as you slowly rolled over onto your other side, was the boy who was at the door. His face was bathed in a cold-looking light from the hallway, a light that you could not see a trace of when the door was closed. The white blonde of his hair shone like the moon in that moment, but it did not put you in any sort of ease. He was with them - the Death Eaters - which probably meant that he wasn’t the only student to do so.
The School had fallen, and that made any hope that you have disappear from your mind entirely. The tray that Draco was holding was set down on the ground. You had your eyes squeezed shut as soon as you had figured out who he was, and didn’t open them until the sound of the door closed.
After a couple of seconds of blinking, you realized that there was a light in the room that had not been there before - and the source was coming from a wand. It was him - he had stayed in the room, and was sitting cross legged in front of your trembling body. Draco put the spoon into the soup that he had brought from his parent’s home, courtesy of their house elf, and then held it out to you for you to sup the broth from. You caught eye contact with the icy blue of his eyes, wondering what sort of trick he was up to.
Draco rolled his eyes as you refused to open your lips for the strange food that he had brought you. “A beef stew, perfectly harmless - and don’t tell me that you’re a vegetarian because now is not the time for that.”
The food did smell enticing, and at this point, you had nothing to lose. It was either eat this and potentially be poisoned, or starve and die nonetheless, so you parted your lips and allowed him to push the spoon through and fill your mouth with broth and what tasted like a carrot. Maybe potato, your senses have definitely been weakened by the ordeal that you’ve been put through by the death eaters. His eyes bore into you as you swallowed, then he dipped the spoon back into the bowl and gave you more. Your stomach pain abated, though all of the other pains stayed.
It didn’t last very long. It ended quickly, because Draco had seemed to hear something that you simply could not. You had screamed too much in this small, dark chamber that the echoes had nearly deafened you. So quickly, the light went out, the tray of food disappeared and Draco snuck back out, leaving you alone once again, unsure if that was all a hallucination or if it had really happened.
Later on, Draco Malfoy appeared to you again. It was a sandwich this time, and you expended all of your energy into chewing it. It had some sort of meat on it but your tastebuds weren’t up to par so you couldn’t even tell that much. Every bite hurt your jaw even more, which you were sure was broken, but it wasn’t as if you could just pop out to Saint Mungo’s to have it fixed. You were still in pain from the torturing just a couple of hours earlier, so all that you could do was try to reach out and tap his knee.
The motion was met by a flinch. Draco didn’t move away from your touch but he might as well have with the way that he was reacting. It hurt, so you lowered your hand back onto the cold floor. And that lead to something being heard by Draco, and him slipping off again.
The visits started to happen more and more frequently, though there was no real talking between the two of you. You were in too much pain to do anything more than chew down the food, and he attempted to keep quiet so no one would be able to hear him. He brought you a wide variety of foods, but mainly soups and things that were easier for you to eat once he realized how much trouble you were having.
“Hey Draco-” You managed to whisper hoarsely after some broth had wet your dried throat. He moved his lit wand to the side so that he could see your face rather than just have it focused on the food. You stared up at him and saw that though he wasn’t nearly as bad as you thought you looked, he had bags under his eyes and what looked like some bruises. “I appreciate this, thank you.”
The boy didn’t smile, he just nodded. Draco must have heard something, for he lowered his wand, disable the light charm, and snuck back out, taking the tray and bowl with him, shrinking it into his pocket. It made your day to have a visitor who came in to help, though you knew just how bad the consequences would be were he caught. Draco could be killed for something as small as a bowl of soup. Fancy or not, the food strengthened you, and you were able to get through the torture sessions a bit better each time.
The sound of people running in a panic, casting spells and screaming reached your ears. Draco’s voice was among them, which made you crawl towards the door, hoping that he would come in here and be safe. Draco did eventually appear, and he closed and locked the door behind him. He didn’t light his wand and the only way that you knew it was him was by the way that he was breathing. Finally, he seemed to relax and shuffled down to the ground, sitting.
“Potter sent his aurors,” He explained. A glimmer of hope went through your mind - you could be saved today! Though, it made you wonder why Draco was hiding in here, unless he had no intention of letting the aurors find you. It didn’t make any sense to you, and the defeat took over your body again, making you slump over as you gave up completely.
You came to and found yourself in somebody’s home. “I was hoping you would wake up soon,” A kind looking woman with red hair said, patting your arm. You stared at her and blinked, your eyes adjusting to the soft light coming from a lamp next to the bed that you were on. The memories of torture made you shudder, and back away from this woman, no matter how sweet she smiled. “Y/n, you’re safe, no one is going to hurt you here.”
Draco’s face popped into your mind and it stayed there like an image that embedded on a screen. “His parents are going to kill him,” You murmured to yourself. It caused a feeling, a sickness in your stomach, that got worse and worse by the second, until you had to lean over the side of the bed and vomit. You didn’t feel any better after you had finished retching, nor did it help when the red-haired woman did a quick cleaning spell to erase what you had done.
“You better get some more rest, dear.”
“Where’s Draco?” You asked, disregarding her words and looked around. He should be here. He should have been able to escape. If you had ... you hadn’t been alone in that room. They must have pulled him out too. They must have-
“Malfoy?” The woman asked, her voice high pitched. You might as well have asked for the Prime Minister with the way that she was reacting. “Fall back asleep, my dear.”
Still too weak to get on your feet, you didn’t have much choice but to stay laying there. Your eyes watched the plump woman as she left the room and closed the door behind her. You finally had a chance to look at your surroundings. The room was gloomy, but at least it had a window. You could just see some trees in the distance, but little else from your position. It gave you no indication of where you were.
Two days had passed. It was nice to be able to keep track of them. The war was over, the good guys had prevailed and Voldemort was no more. The Death Eaters who had imprisoned you were standing trial and you had given your testimony, making it absolutely clear that Draco Malfoy had nothing to do with your circumstances. In fact, you hadn’t mentioned him at all. It seemed safer that way, so if any of them managed to break out of prison, he wouldn’t have a target on his back.
You recovered well and were able to go home to your muggle parents and calm your mind. You were still jumpy, and the only thing that seemed to help was to write letters to your savior, Draco Malfoy. You sent them out with your owl but you never received a response back. He lived, you gathered that from the other survivors, but he appeared to be missing.
Appeared was the key word. After three weeks of letters and getting no word back, the blonde teenager showed up at your door, looking exhausted and worn down. You and your family welcomed him in without a single weary glance, for they knew the truth. You gave him a bed to sleep in, a house to hide in, food to eat and special care to injuries that he had acquired from his father after the war.
He didn’t speak for the first day, but he told you everything on the second. About how he had joined the Death Eaters, helped them into Hogwarts, was supposed to kill Dumbledore but couldn’t. You dabbed a cold cloth on his head and listened to him speak. He let it all out, and you could see the weight lifted off of his shoulders.
“You shouldn’t be helping me, I was one of them.” He said after a few more days of lounging.
“Self-pity doesn’t seem to be your style, Draco.” You said, shaking your head. “You helped me in a place without kindness, without good and love. Why wouldn’t I help you in a place with all of that?”

Almost too late
I met this guy when I was in high school and I liked him from the start. We went our separate ways and both joined separate branches of the military. He became infantry in his branch and I became an MP (military police). He sent me letters when I was deployed but that was kind of the last I’d heard of him. I was still in the military years later, home on leave, when I ran into him again at a bar my younger brother worked at. He was really sweet and hilarious and basically everything I remembered. I found that I still liked him a lot. I found out he had finished his enlistment and was home for good.
We hooked up and eventually started dating long-distance. I traveled back and forth whenever I could on breaks, and he would come to visit me. He was always very sweet and nice except there were times when he would get a little controlling. It started out small, like telling me I shouldn’t post certain pictures or wear certain things. I didn’t see it as an issue because sometimes men just get protective, right? I figured everyone had their issues occasionally and the good seemed to outweigh the bad.
Every time he made me cry (which wasn’t often because the military had taught me to hide these emotions) he would apologize and make up for it somehow, whether it was flowers or a date night or whatever. One time he got angry with me because another guy, one of my platonic friends, messaged me, and he read my phone while I was asleep. He woke me up to angry sex which, at the time, didn’t seem to be such a big deal but he scared me to the point where I started crying when he started grabbing my throat to the point where I couldn’t breathe. When he saw my reaction, he was sweet and went completely 180, as if he had shocked himself. I chose to forgive him
I think I had this idea at the time where I was invincible. I’d been in relationships before, some that ended poorly, but I’d never been physically or mentally abused. I pushed the early warning signs to the side in hopes for a good future with who I thought was the man of my dreams.
We got married and I finished my enlistment, and moved back home to be with him. But I wasn’t sure what I was doing with my life, and in this sort of limbo I was in, all of a sudden, things changed. He became extremely controlling, obsessive, and angry all the time. I wasn’t good enough for him. He would coerce me into having sex with him when I didn’t want to. He would get drunk and say terrible things to me about my family. He gossiped about me to my friends.
All of these things had me in a deep depression. I started having random panic attacks, triggered by nothing I could rationally explain away (I’ve had generalized anxiety for a while but it was usually triggered by stressful events, not out of nowhere like this). I got to the point where I could barely get out of bed and function because I felt so exhausted all the time. I didn’t want to have sex with him. This seemed to make him even angrier. He would constantly tell me how worthless I was and how I deserved this. He told me if I ever cheated on him or left he would kill me and himself. I started to believe him.
I finally got the courage to go stay with my mom. I told him it was just for a few nights so he wouldn’t kill me. But he went on a rampage and after belittling me for an hour to the point of me sobbing uncontrollably while not allowing me to leave (he kept blocking the doors) he finally relented out of nowhere and went 180 again, though with a warning that if I tried to leave, he would bankrupt me and take everything I had. He could afford a good lawyer. I still didn’t have a job and I couldn’t afford this. I only had the last of my deployment money and it was almost gone, and a meager disability check from the VA which is not quite enough to live on, so where would I really go anyway? I believed him. I didn’t leave, and I forgave him once again.
The cycle continued. The next time I tried to leave to stay with my mom, just to get away from it for a while, he racked his .45 and put it to his own head, saying he would kill himself in front of me if I left. I didn’t leave then either because I knew I could not live with myself if he killed himself because of me.
The final straw was after a night of drinking. We went out and partied and came home, bringing one of his friends who couldn’t drive. My husband shouldn’t have driven either but we somehow made it back. When his friend went to bed in the spare room, he started trying to have sex with me. I didn’t want it and I told him so. He started screaming at me (how he didn’t wake his friend up, I don’t know). He grabbed me by the neck and started choking me. I tried to fight back, even hit him to get him off me, but I legitimately thought I was going to die. He told me he was going to kill me and then my mother. He relented for a minute, and told me to get on the bed so he could have sex with me.
In my head, I reasoned that being raped was better than dying, and I complied but I still begged him not to do it, thinking that maybe he would be merciful. He didn’t listen and started having sex with me so I just laid there and prayed it would be over soon. I laid still like a board and after about a minute of him trying, he pushed off me and told me I was useless because I couldn’t even get him off. He resumed trying to choke me though it wasn’t quite hard enough to kill me. I don’t know if he was trying to scare me or what. I didn’t fight back this time because he wasn’t as savage about it this time for whatever reason, and I knew he could fight better than I.
He then told me to get on the bed because he was going to shoot me and kill me. He had guns laying all around the house. I knew he could do it and I was genuinely afraid it was the end for me. I don’t remember what exactly I said, but I think my previous training finally paid off for me, because somehow I convinced him that this wasn’t what he wanted to do, and that he didn’t want to ruin the rest of his life by doing this. I still don’t know how I got so lucky. To this day I don’t know how I managed to survive that night. He could have killed me at any moment and somehow he didn’t.
I finally told him I was leaving (not the same night but within a few months of this last event). I began planning my escape well beforehand but even still, I needed luck on my side to get out of there in one piece. I had handled domestic altercations in the past as an MP, and I knew from my training that the most dangerous time for a woman in an abusive relationship is when she decides to leave. He had told me (jokingly, but with a hint of foreboding) plenty of times that if he killed me, no one would ever find my body. He had killed people before and I didn’t doubt his capability to do so. But I had always considered myself mentally strong and I’d always told myself (especially not after handling a domestic) that I would NEVER put myself in an abusive relationship, yet here I was, trapped by my own fear of this man who had somehow exerted so much control over me. But I was no longer going to be his victim. I had decided that I was getting out, whether it was to safety or to my own death, and I was not going to live out the rest of my life in such a toxic environment.
Somehow, I managed to convince him I wasn’t right for him, that I was bringing him down and that he could be so much happier without me. It took months of throwing this idea at him, only when he was in a good mood. In his defense, he did seem sad that our relationship was so terrible. He had PTSD from being overseas in combat. I think a lot of his violent reactions were because of this. I didn’t hate him, but I needed to get out while I still could. My words slowly got through to him. I don’t know how it worked, I honestly don’t. I knew I was was taking a huge gamble but my strong points have always been my abilities to convince people, to calm a tense situation, and to utilize what the military calls “verbal judo”. I used all of these to my advantage, and slowly the idea of us getting divorced started to sound better to him. He was truly unhappy with me and he started to rationalize this over his obsessiveness (his therapy helped a lot with this too). I told him I wasn’t going to take anything of his (the judge looked at me strangely in court when I said this and even tried to tell me that I was probably entitled to something, considering I wasn’t working due to disability at the time). I did this even knowing I would be living in poverty so he would be more likely to let go. He made lots of money and I didn’t ask for a single cent because I valued my life more than his money.
I moved states away after we finalized the divorce to live with a friend, and cut all ties to my ex husband. I made it out and after seeing all the stories of women who didn’t, I consider myself extremely lucky. I also learned something from this entire ordeal: every woman can be a victim of domestic abuse. I used to think I was strong, both mentally and physically, and completely immune to it because I had seen it so many times firsthand. I never thought it could happen to me. But I was wrong, and I found out the hard way that an abuser is always going to be an abuser and no matter what you do, you can’t change them. Your best bet is to recognize the early warning signs: unhealthy possessiveness/obsession, mood swings, insisting on sex when you have stated you don’t want to, things of that nature. Because by the time you live with someone, it may be too late. It almost was for me.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST REALIZE YOU WERE BLACK?
By Abassi Okoro
Strange question isn't it? Well, it's not like black babies come into the world knowing their color and ethnicity. Someone at some point has to tell them. Now if you're not black then you're probably thinking to yourself right now, "Why would you have to tell a kid that he or she is black? Isn't that obvious?" Well it might be obvious to you that you're white but being white in America isn't accompanied by a disclaimer and parental advisory. White parents never have to pull their kid to the side and say, "Jimmy, you're white!" There's no reason to allude him to that fact because society will do it for him through advantages and privileges. Black parents, we don't have the luxury of just saying to our children, "You're black" without telling them why it's important to know that, how we got here in America, why we're here in America in the first place, and the dangers of still being in America.
The revelation of you being black is usually a negative one. The revelation of you being white is usually a pleasant one. I'll give you an example; you might realize you're white when you live in a big house, your mommy drives you to school, you have no chores, everything comes easy to you, you get everything you ask for and all of your friends look like you. Even if you’re not from a wealthy white family and your mother is a single white parent or your parents are low to middle class whites, you still reap from the benefit of the doubt that you will turn out at least better than the average negro. For blacks, you might realize you're black when you're the only one who looks different in class, when you’re bused to a school way across town or when a little white ask you to dance only for it to turn out to be a group prank. Or as in my case, you're called a "Nigger" in 2nd grade. Pretty rough beginnings I admit. Being called a nigger was when I realized that I was black. I remember running home and telling my mom that a white kid called me a nigger and my mother tried her best. She said, "You ain't the nigger - HE'S the nigger." Well, that didn't make much sense either. I needed a REAL explanation - not an emotional reaction.
When you’re a young child, you don't think about yourself being anything but a child, let alone a black child. At least the white kids had that luxury of knowing they were a white child. When I was a kid, my mother would say, "Don't you go out there and embarrass me in front of all these white people." That was another realization; why was it so important to make white folks happy and comfortable? I imagine that no white parent ever carried the burden of telling their white kid to be on their best behavior in the company of minorities or immigrants. White parents were also proud of their kids no matter what but with black parents, us black kids had a hell of a time invoking unconditional pride from our parents and you can forget it ever being vocalized. It's just not in our culture to praise our children in that aspect and if you know anything about Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome, you’d understand the reason behind why black parents do not praise their children. One of the reasons is that black parents feel that somehow that praise sets us up for failure and so parents stay stern and serious while playing the role "Constant reminder" that they have to put in “work” and push twice as hard for half as much. It makes sense from a survival standpoint but positive reinforcement an unconditional love is also a survival tactic. Black kids need to hear adulation just as much, if not more than white kids. We’re the ones at a social disadvantage.
SUMMER OF 1983
It was the summer of 1983, school was out and I was boarding the school bus. A white girl in the front of the bus was eyeing me and whispering to her group of white female friends and giggling. I could hear some of the girl says, "Go up to him, go ask him." Obviously I was thinking that the girl had a crush on me and wanted to ask me to be her boyfriend. As the group of girls made their way to the back of the bus where I was sitting, one of the girls said, "She wanted to know if, there's birds living in your hair?" The three girls giggled and ran off. I had an Afro. I was embarrassed and devastated. I wanted to cut my hair that night and I was certainly black THAT day. Being black had a tendency of catching me off guard. You become baffled about why store shop owners are following you around in the store. You're confused why a bad grade in English translates as you having a, "Learning Disability" while a bad grade by a white kid translates as, "He just needs a tutor." You’re confused on why a police officer is asking an 11 year old if he has any weapons while white kids are given a ride home in the police car (front seat). You can't figure out why being involved in a fight with another black kid, you're asked if you're in a gang.
SPRING OF 1988
It was spring of 1988, my friend Travis, Christian and I were sitting in Travis’ car in a parking lot trying to figure out directions to Chantilly High School. We were going there to meet up with some other friends for a flag football tournament. Travis had just bought his first car, a royal blue 1975 Chevy Nova SS, muscle car. We were both equally confident and cocky (even though I was the passenger, I thought the car did wonders for my teenage sex appeal.) Within minutes we heard the, “Woop Woop” of a police siren. A police car had pulled up behind us with flashing lights. The officer got out of the car and walk up to my window, he leaned down and said, “What are you boys doing here sitting in the car?” Travis replied, “We’re reading a map printout.” The police said, “You know this looks suspicious.” Travis and I looked at one another and he replied, “Sitting in my own car looks suspicious?” The officer asked for ID and registration which was provided for him but he also made Travis take the keys out of the ignition and give them to him. The officer walked back to his car with Travis’ keys as we sat there for over 20 minutes.
The officer returned and immediately said, “Everyone step out of the vehicle.” So obviously at this point, we’re expecting the worse. We all got out of the car and sat on the ground. Within minutes, police back up arrived. There were now two police officers and Travis looks at me and whispers, “Now they’re going to fuck with us.” The first officer says, “You guys are sitting in a parked car in front of a bank.” We hadn’t realized that a First Union Bank was 20 feet away and we were not sitting “in front” of it. The officer says, “How do we know you’re not casing the joint and you’re planning to rob it?” Travis fires back with attitude, “Yeah, we’re going to rob a closed bank with no tools, no weapons, no masks and in broad daylight with a supped-up blue muscle car.” The officer then turns to our friend Christian and says, “Why are you with these two jokers?” Christian replied, “We’re friends, we’re just trying to get to Chantilly High School for a football game.” What the police officer said next was an incredible example of my blackness. The officer said to Christian, “Don’t hang with these guys, I can tell they’re trouble. If you want a future, leave these guys alone. Go ahead and get outta here. Go home now!” Christian was white! Travis and I stood for another 10 minutes as the cops tried their best to find something to pin on us. The car was searched by both officers, we were questioned if we had drugs or contraband, we were chastised, ridiculed and we were even asked if we were “gang bangers.” Eventually we were allowed to leave. The entire ordeal was an hour.
I was furious, angry, and extremely angry. I was also angry with Christian for being white and privileged. It wasn’t his fault but I was angry with him nonetheless. We never made the football tournament. Realizing you’re black is more than just looking in the mirror. It involves the realization of unfair and unequal treatment, of bigotry and pure hate. I have spoken to African immigrants who only knew that they were black in the context of skin color but didn’t know that they were BLACK in status until they arrived here in America and was treated less than human. Many of these revelations put me on the path of where I am today. I wanted to know why black folks was such a big deal in white America. Why were we so hated? My mother would often reassure me that, “One day our ship will come.” I wanted to know where that ship was coming from and where it was going but more importantly, why “One Day?” My parents indoctrinated me to believe that our time was a matter of patience, that one day we shall overcome – not that we HAVE overcome. The tide will turn, the pendulum will eventually swing to the other side, what goes around comes around, you reap what you sow and so on and so on. Cop Out! I don’t have mixed feelings about my parent’s teachings, that’s what they were taught as well. If you listen to the old Negro spirituals, all of those old songs were about “One Day” and never “Today.” That’s how blacks in America were conditioned, to WAIT for that one special day or that special savior who will come, “One day.” This type of conditioning takes away our natural desire to win. No one waits for a victory – you get out there and claim that victory. Those old Negro spirituals are a lie!
My parents didn’t explicitly teach me about my blackness or how to navigate in the anti-black racist society. Perhaps they were protecting me or perhaps they weren’t wise in their articulation of the black struggle. I had no real reason to acknowledge my race and I didn’t understand the impact that my blackness had on the society and the people around me, positive or negative. I was the first to be picked for the basketball team and the last to be chosen for the debate team. I grew up with a myriad of different friends, black, white, Asian, Arab, Hispanic. My very first best friend, Ankush - he was Indian and from New Delhi. My second best friend – Katie was a white girl from Virginia, my third best friends were two Native American twin brothers – Ricky and Nester from North Carolina and despite that diversity of friendship, my friends were more intrigued by MY blackness. When you’re young you don’t realize the significance of your skin tone. Society hits you in the face with proverbial bricks of blackness. Whiteness seems like a very subtle and smooth realization accompanied by smiles, entitlements and privileged white culture.
I grew up in a household where blackness wasn’t necessarily celebrated. We didn’t celebrate Kwanzaa, we didn’t worship a black Jesus, and we didn’t honor Black leaders, not even during Black History month. My parents kept their noses clean, heads down and they did their best not to rock the boat. Neither one of my parents were social activists or black extremists. They grew up in a Southern Baptist environment and my parents still carried some residual obedience to white folks. My mother worked for a wealthy white woman as a caregiver. I can still recall the first time I witnessed my mother address another woman her same age as “Yes maam” and “No Maam,” something I grew up believing was attributed to elders only. My father worked for a commercial insulation company for over 40 years. The company was owned by a board of racists whites who would hire blacks and Hispanics to work 60+ hours a week for pennies. With no marketable skill set, no post high school education, no real working knowledge of economics, my father’s options were limited and that put him at the mercy of being employed by whites who would otherwise work him to the bone and pay him chump change. Because of this, I was brought up to behave myself in front of white people or else I wouldn’t be given great opportunities. It took me several years to realize that my parents were still operating as free slaves. My mother always reminded me of how intelligent and talented I was but ironically she put that reminder in the context of using that intelligence and talent to assist white folks so that they can pay me well. She would often say, “Boy, that brain of yours is something else. If you can get you a job in a big company you will be rich. You are so smart!” She never said, “Boy, that brain of yours is something else. If you can start your own company and hire your own people, you will be rich.”
It’s not her fault, it’s how she was conditioned. It’s how most of us were conditioned. I think I resented the fact that I wasn’t raised like the black kids in San Francisco who had the Black Panther Party down the block or like the kids in Harlem in the 60’s who could just walk down to Mosque no. 7 and listen to Malcolm speak. I had parents who took me to church to look upward to a white God. I wanted to know why my parents weren’t angry like me. I was angry stepping out of the 75 Chevy Nova SS and my parents went to work each day serving white folks and never had a cross word for their bigot boss.
So I went through my phases (Black Militant, Ansaarullah, Moorish Science Temple of America, The Five Percent Nation, Nubian Islamic Hebrews, Nuwaupian Nation of Moors, The Universal Zulu Nation, Pan Africanist, All-African People's Revolutionary Party), I joined them all looking for my purpose. If my parents weren’t going to teach me blackness, I was going to teach myself. I’m grateful for all of this because it gave me an opportunity to define myself and not just accept prescribed definitions (African American, Christian, Non-Violent). I identified myself and I came to realize that I’m not just one thing or three things. I am black, I am African, I am Cameroonian/Congo, I am a black militant, I’m an Ansaar, I’m a Moor, a Five Percenter, I am a Nubian Islamic Hebrew, a Nuwaubian, a Zulu, a Pan-Africanist, and I am a revolutionary. More importantly, I am Black.

How to get health insurance for a pregnant woman in California that is a LEGAL immigrant?
Ok, my fiancee is pregnant. She's a legal resident, but from what I understand, she isn't supposed to use any type of public benefits (aka welfare) and we really don't want to either. I have company health care (HMO), but my company won't pay for her, and for me to add her onto my plan is like $900 more a month (IT IS INSANE!!!!!). She doesn't work as she is a stay at home mom. We are not married, but we were planning on an October wedding before she found out she was pregnant (7 weeks), I imagine we are still going to stick to our plans. How can we have this baby? I make $36,000 and live in San Diego. This would be our 2nd child, I can barely make ends meet. Before you judge me about having another kid without the true financial means, she was on birth control for 2 years. We don't know how this happened, but I guess it's not true 100% protection. Are there any insurances we can get? How can we get help with this baby? What can we do? Thank you for your help.""

Motorbike Insurance/Tax/SORN/MOT need help!?
Hi, I recently bought my first motorbike a few month in advance of my 17th birthday, with the intention to ride it once im 17. When i got the bike, it had no MOT or road tax and it was registered as SORN (meaning it was registered as being off the road). So i filled in the registration document, rang up the DVLA and re-registered the vehicle as SORN again. The thing i would like to know is, when it comes to the time of my 17th birthday, in what order do i get each of the things, for example, would i get the MOT before the roadtax and if so how would i get my bike to the MOT centre without having roadtax, and would i still be able to get insured on an untaxed bike with no MOT? So basicly, what order do i get the insurance, MOT and roadtax in? Sorry i hope this made sense i have tried to describe it in the best way possible, thanks for any help.""

Why do people complain about the health insurance system when the car insurance companies rip people off just as much as they do?? Where are all the protesters? Self-Driving Cars Will Transform the World as We Know It-Including Where We Live
mercedes-benz.com; iStock; realtor.com
The revolution is coming-and it's driving itself.
As autonomous cars make their autobahn-paced transition from fanciful, emerging technology to mainstream reality, they're expected to leave a forever-altered world in their rear-view mirrors. And it isn't just highways and commutes that will be transformed-it's also the homes and towns where we choose to live.
Minds boggle at this brave, new sci-fi-tinged world lurking around the corner. Imagine being conveyed from your doorstep to your office in a private vehicle, but without the stress of driving in stop-and-go traffic, or making awkward conversation with a driver. Instead, you might take a catnap, binge-watch Netflix, or prep for meetings. Traveling to and from work could even become pleasant. And if a long commute is no longer an ordeal, where might people choose to live?

Chances are folks won't have to wait long to find out. Many of the big-name automakers, including Ford, Volvo, and BMW, plan to manufacture either fully autonomous vehicles, or ones at least capable of navigating highways on their own, by 2021 or sooner. In 2019, General Motors plans to launch its self-driving vehicles, available for ride-sharing, in some of the nation's biggest cities, including San Francisco.
Next year, GM will put its newfangled chariots to the ultimate test: on the wildly congested streets of Manhattan. (A human driver will sit behind the wheel to take over in case of an emergency.) Google parent Alphabet's Waymo will unleash its first fleet of autonomous minivans for trials in the Phoenix area within the next few months. And Tesla CEO Elon Musk said one of his cars will soon make the trip from Los Angeles to New York without a driver ever touching the wheel.

As for the everyday ubiquity of the technology-well, that timeline is anyone's guess. Predictions range from a few years to several decades out, depending on who's hypothesizing. Many Americans may be hesitant to say goodbye to their beloved clunkers for robotic rides. But automakers and others are betting on the long game.
“It's a transformative moment,” says Billy Rose, president of The Agency, a Los Angeles–based real estate brokerage and development consultancy. “It's just so exciting to think about how these changes are going to impact us. There are ways we haven't even thought of yet.”
Whether the first impact is felt through the private ownership of premium-priced autonomous cars, or robotic ride-hailing services like Lyft, autonomous technology will almost certainly and eventually contribute to a decline in car purchases. And that would have a ripple effect on new home development and community planning.
We'd better buckle up. “We're on the precipice of a whole new era,” says Rose. “This change will be like the change from horse and buggy to cars.”

Where will the next hottest towns and cities be?
So what does all this mean to the future of real estate?
The first areas to see substantial change when self-driving car services take hold will likely be some of the nation's most desirable-and expensive-urban markets. That's because a lot of land currently allotted to cars in urban centers-parking lots and garages, gas stations, auto shops, and car washes-could be repurposed into apartment and condo towers, bringing down the cost of housing.
“We're going to see prime real estate becoming unlocked,” says Rick Palacios Jr., director of research at John Burns Real Estate Consulting.
About 15% to 25% of land in urban centers is currently used for parking, both above and below ground, says Sam Abuelsamid, senior analyst with Navigant Research, a market research company based in Boulder, CO.
Meanwhile, constructing underground parking lots below urban condo and apartment buildings typically runs builders $10,000 to $50,000 a spot, the Agency's Rose says. Bigger buildings could have more than a hundred spaces. If builders don't have to shoulder those costs, prices are likely to fall.
A secondary effect of adopting autonomous vehicles could be that farther-out exurbs and rural areas with more affordable, spacious properties could become more attractive to urban workers with the promise of a friction-free commute.
“There are parts of the country that have been left behind, and it's possible this might bring them back to life, says Ed McMahon, senior resident fellow at the Urban Land Institute, a Washington, DC–based real estate and land use group.
Still, McMahon is cautious; walkable cities and closer-in suburbs are likely to remain popular, he says. Plus, it may take longer for on-demand driverless car service to become widely available in communities without a critical mass of customers.
Personal garages might just become extinct
Suburban garages could become one of the casualties of robotic rides, going the way of VHS tapes, phone booths, and photographic film. These attached or standalone car shelters could be turned into man caves, gyms, chill out rooms-you name it. They could even be converted into apartments, enabling aging parents or grown children to live nearby, or homeowners to make extra rental income.
International architectural planning firm William Hezmalhalch Architects is already getting ready for the shift by creating prototypes of garages that could easily be converted into living spaces in Orange County, CA. The firm is also looking into designing homes with no garages at all-a radical notion in car-centric Southern California. But they can't be built just yet. Most local zoning laws currently require each home to have a certain number of parking spots.
The challenge is “getting the jurisdictions to realize there are not going to be as many cars out there,” says Denise Ashton, senior principal in community planning at William Hezmalhalch Architects.
Builders today typically construct garages of about 20 square feet within the shell of suburban homes. That's about 400 square feet attached to a 2,000- or 2,500-square-foot home made of concrete, walls, and insulation.
None of that comes cheap. Two-car, attached garages usually run from $20,000 to $27,000, according to HomeAdvisor, an online home services marketplace.
But if new homes are built sans garages, that could reduce the overall cost. There could be more land available to put up larger homes in new subdivisions and neighborhoods. Or homes could come with larger yards or more interior space.

Stay tuned for the suburbs of the future
The suburban subdivisions of the future are also likely to receive a face-lift-and become a whole lot more green.
If folks no longer own cars, it eliminates the need for driveways and could cut down the number of paved streets throughout communities. Instead, residents might walk or bike down paths-instead of wider, car-centric roads-to catch rides from designated pick-up and drop-off sites. This means far more land could be freed up for park space and other town amenities.
“Today, we need to have streets and driveways for every home,” says Linda Mamet, vice president of corporate marketing at TRI Pointe Group, an Irvine, CA–based homebuilder. “In the future, that may not be the case.”
Of course, many details such as providing access for deliveries and designing walkways in colder climates have yet to be fully figured out.
Car ownership is costly, but many cling to it
But before you start preparing for life in a new, garage-less future, understand this: Americans love their cars. So the path to full autonomous tech acceptance may have a few potholes ahead.
Despite the potential benefits, only about 40% of U.S. adults are currently enthusiastic about the development of autonomous vehicles, compared with 54% who are worried about it, according to a recent Pew Research Center survey.
And don't be so sure that Americans will embrace the idea of ditching car ownership anytime soon.
“The fact that vehicles become autonomous will not automatically convert people from owning cars to sharing them,” says Blair Schlecter, director of economic development and government affairs at the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce, who writes about transportation issues. “Some people will always like the freedom of being able to own their own vehicles and being able to have a style of car they want.”
Moreover, pricey ride-hailing services such as Uber can quickly add up, at current rates. For those who drive about 3,500 miles annually, as about 90% to 95% of Americans with their own cars do, it's cheaper to buy a vehicle, according to consulting firm McKinsey & Company.
So how will people be persuaded to embrace a self-driving future? They could start by looking at some of the specialized advantages-such as being a major boon for the elderly and disabled, making it easier for them to get around, giving them newfound independence.
Add that to the fact that the average cost of owning a new vehicle totals about $8,469 in 2017, according to AAA. This takes monthly car and insurance payments into account along with gas, maintenance, and repair costs. And these same vehicles sit in their garages and parking spots more than 96% of the year, according to a 2016 AAA survey.
People still LOVE their cars…

You can already catch a ride in a driverless car…
To players such as Tesla, Uber, Waymo, and the Big Three automakers, it isn't a matter of whether the autonomous car revolution will be adopted by most Americans-it's a matter of when, and which companies will lead the charge. That's why they're engaged in a frenzied race to develop, perfect, and test these self-driving vehicles and get a wheel up on the competition.
Prescreened Waymo riders can already use an app to hail one of about 600 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans in Phoenix, where they're being tested. Once passengers settle into the vehicle, they press a button to start the ride-and they're off. Riders are shown arrival times on a screen along with what the car is seeing through its cameras and other sensors. There's also a pull-over button they can press to be let off in a safe place. (As with most current autonomous vehicles, a driver sits in the front seat and can take over if needed.)
Similarly, certain riders in Phoenix, San Francisco, and Pittsburgh can also hail one of Uber's self-driving Volvos.
BMW, GM, Ford, Land Rover, and many other companies are also testing their technology and vehicles around the country.
Safety issues continue to be a concern, and manufacturers have different ways of addressing it. Tesla's self-driving cars, for example, are made to be driven by humans but can go fully automated on demand. They are outfitted with 12 sensors and eight cameras to ensure they're ready. But the company came under fire after one of the owners of the cars died in a crash on a central Florida highway last year after automating about 90% of his last ride. However, government investigators said the victim was warned 13 times audibly and visibly to keep his hands on the steering wheel before the accident.
And a driverless, electric shuttle bus in Las Vegas got into a fender bender within a few hours of its debut recently. A human driver of the other vehicle was deemed at fault, and no one was hurt.
… or live in a community that uses them
Babcock Ranch is using autonomous shuttles throughout the new development.
Babcock Ranch
Suburbanites who don't live in a city can still get in on the autonomous, ride-sharing action. Babcock Ranch is a new 18,000-acre town in Southwest Florida, south of Sarasota. It will have 19,500 homes, schools, services-and autonomous cars and shuttles.
Ground was broken on the former cattle and mining ranch in 2015. About 25 homes-with garages-have already been completed, and residents are beginning to move in. (The town will be a mix of rental apartments, duplexes starting at $175,000, and single-family houses starting in the low $200,000s. It's one of the first fully solar-powered communities in the country.)
Next month, the community is launching the first of its eight-seat, autonomously driven, electric shuttles operated by a company called Transdev, a supplier of public transportation systems. Babcock's driverless shuttles travel through the community, from the model homes to the town center to model homes.
“It doesn't run on tracks. It doesn't have any wires,” says Babcock spokeswoman Lisa Hall. “It learns the route and … it knows how to guide itself.”
Babcock Ranch says it's just the beginning of its vision of future travel. The community is also planning to have two-seat, autonomous vehicles that residents can order on their smartphones (for a fee) to get around.
“We're trying to create a whole new way of living,” Hall says.

6 Ways To Live Well With A Chronic Illness
Living with chronic illness comes with its own set of unique challenges but it doesn’t mean that life has to be one terrible ordeal.
Often, we don’t look ill and we can still manage to hold down a job. We have families and a bit of a social life. Despite these things, we still feel terrible.
It’s like having the flu every day, with maybe an odd hour or two of relief.
Living with a chronic illness brings with it the challenge of honoring ourselves while also living up to the expectations and responsibilities of being alive. Often, that includes extreme pain, exhaustion or a hidden disability.
The hardest part can be that because we don’t look ill and we do our best, family and friends can forget. They can even become frustrated with us. As a result, we become frustrated with them and we get angry at ourselves for being ill.
These feelings of guilt and frustration can lead to arguments. Sometimes, they can also push us into a deeper sense of depression and deprivation.
Why us? What did we do wrong?
Despite all the questions you may have in your mind, remember that there is a way to live well. It can be a challenging work but living with chronic illness is possible.
Below, I’ll show you how.
First, we need to grieve
We need to grieve for the life we are not going to live or might never live. We need to grieve for the lost time, missed events, and missed opportunities.
And grieving is tough, especially when we are told we can think our way out of it or we, on some metaphysical level, asked for this. This ‘magical’ thinking or any other general new age BS does not help us when we are deep in the mire of seeing our lives crumble beneath us.
We are ill.
Most of us are still desperately searching for a cure. But to continue with this journey, we must accept where we are.
Grieve the loss of the life you don’t have. Grieving comes in waves and must be honored.
However, you should remember that grieving does come to an end once there’s acceptance. So, accept how life is and get on with it.
Let’s live it well- even within the restrictions of the disease.
Which means boundaries
Boundaries keep you safe. They keep your pain down and they keep you sane. They don’t mean brick walls.
Instead, think of them as flexible fences that control what comes in and goes out. Learning to set your fences can be hard. But once done, you’ll wish you were able to do it years ago.
Boundaries let you stop worrying. And when you worry, you increase your stress levels and even your pain. It becomes an endless cycle that damages you more.
Strong boundaries ensure things get done, toxic people stay away, and you stop over giving.
So, sort out what type of boundaries you need. Get others on board, remind them when they are overstepping your boundary, and stick to your guns.
The boundaries you put in place will be unique to you.
Honesty with yourself and others
I feel this follows on naturally after the grieving process and boundaries.
You are going to disappoint people.
You can’t do everything. You’ll have limits due to your illness.
Being honest about this is the best way forward. Explain that you only have so much energy. Give a warning when that energy starts to deplete and plan how you’ll leave if this has not already been done. Then when ready, put your plan into action.
Do not push through!
Pushing through is for emergencies or once in a lifetime events only. The consequences of pushing through are harsh. They mean days in bed, increased pain and increased brain fog.
And often for what? So other people will like you more?
People without a chronic illness can bounce back after 5 minutes, but what about you?
You’ll crash and can’t move.
Listen to your body. Honor when it talks to you and for the love of all that is, don’t push through!
Drop the guilt
It is not your fault that you are ill and it is not your fault that you have limitations. It’s just not your fault so stop feeling guilty.
I can’t stress this enough.
It has taken me years to drop the guilt but finally, it is happening.
This is life.
By accepting ourselves as we are, we make it easier for others to accept us as we are. If we present to the world who we really are without the guilt, the world will reflect that back to us. People that can’t honor this will walk away.
Pamper days that are more than pamper days
Pamper days to me are ‘women going to a spa’.
Well, that is not enough.
Living with chronic illness means we miss out big time.
For me, a pamper day is planning a day where I don’t miss out. I don’t do what anyone else wants or needs me to do. This day is for me to experience what I need to experience to feel alive. This may be a visit to an art gallery, a trip to friends, a simple stroll or a wheelchair visit outdoors.
Too often, we are bounded to our beds and houses and this is bad for us on all fronts.
If you can’t get out, bring the pamper day to you. Have your friends come around and cook for you, have a tea party or a picnic in the back garden. Do what feeds your soul and not what feeds others!
But again, don’t push through.
Be strategic about coping with your energy/pain levels.
Love
I am so lucky that I have a partner who understands that I have an illness one can’t see. It wasn’t always like this, but we are now at a point where our routine honors his needs and mine. He knows I’m not pulling a fast one. He can now recognize when exhaustion sets in and if I need to be in bed, then I’m in bed.
It has taken time and patience to get here. Education and seeing medical results have been instrumental, but I’m so glad we have hung in there.
It hasn’t been easy for my daughter, either. She can’t remember a time that I was not ill. As a result, she can read me like a book and sense within a second when I’m flagging. I have done my best to parent her the best I can, but this has sadly meant she has grown up way too fast for my liking.
She spins it and says she is independent and she is. I can’t deny that her love has helped immeasurably, but at a cost to her childhood.
But, what if you don’t have love?
Join clubs or groups. You can even search for virtual ones. Facebook seems to be a suitable place for support and advice. Just try and avoid the toxic groups. We need support, not a pity party.
Which brings me on to toxic people.
What if you have a toxic relationship?
If you do, then get help or just get out. Toxic relationships stress us immeasurably.
We are far better off without them.
There is nothing worse than being ill and living with toxic family or friends. They will make you worse and you deserve better.

Alternative therapies
Alternative therapies are often complementary to the regular medical care many of us have. Some find them a bit ‘woo’ but I do believe the right ones have a significant role to play.
If we are truly fortunate, we have an integrative medic that practices both conventional and complementary techniques.
My illness, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, needs to be treated with several complementary therapies. Diet change has been one and I strictly follow the Auto Immune Protocol. My emotional and mental well-being has been improved with therapies like EFT. I take supplements to correct blood test results and they have improved my fatigue levels.
I still can’t do everything I want to do, so I do the best I can. I no longer beat myself up for it.
I don’t believe I am to blame for this illness and I will no longer allow people in my life that disrespect me because of it.
I see conventional medicine and alternative medicine as a partnership where they complement each other. Together, they can help a person live well.

My life is more balanced, more loving and more fun. I have grieved, I have dropped the guilt, I have a fantastic doctor and I am loved. All these things make living with chronic illness a little easier.

Fuck Disability
The American Disability Act defines disability as such:
The presence of a sensory, mental or physical impairment, whether temporary or permanent, that:
Has a substantially limiting effect on the individual’s ability to perform one or more major life activities; and,
Is medically cognizable or diagnosable, exists as a record or history, or the person is perceived to have an impairment
Cancer is a disability. And yeah I don’t have cancer right now, but you know what else is a disability, regardless of whether you agree or not, my fucking height, or lackthereof.
1. It’s a physical Impairment
2. It has substantially limiting effect on my ability to perform major life activities
3. It’s medically cognizable, exists as a record and is easily perceived as an impairment.
Fucking case in point.
And yeah okay, I’m not “Disabled-disabled” which is probably what most people think when I say I’m disabled. Yeah, I have the general use of the majority of my body parts. But a person with dwarfism has general use of their body parts and society generally considers them disabled. Just because my body parts are generally proportional to the rest of my body, doesn’t mean that I’m not disabled. The point is that disability isn’t a one-sized fits all package; it comes in just as many forms as people do.
It took me a long time to be able to call myself disabled, because there is a negative stigma when it comes to disability. So to admit that I have a disability took a lot of courage, and doing so gave me an entirely new perspective on life. I can now recognize how fucking negative people view disabilities, how far people go to avoid even thinking about it, and how hesitant people are to accommodate disability, even the people you thought were supposed to support you no matter what.
The reason it’s taken me this long to call myself disabled is because I was never educated on the issue. My parents did every thing they could to make me average sized after my treatment when I was younger, and when my body denied me that privilege, they played ignorant to the fact that my height is a disability. They went on living as if I was average-sized, and didn’t provide any accommodations, and thus I grew up thinking that 1. Something was wrong with being disabled and 2. I can’t and never will be disabled because I can do anything a “normal person” can do, just differently.
But that right there is the fucking point! “NORMAL PEOPLE” Like that’s all I fucking talked about as a kid.
I can do anything a “normal person” can do because I have control of all my body parts!
And yet, I couldn’t.
I couldn’t go to school without people staring at me and talking about me behind my back.
I couldn’t go out in public wearing “age appropriate” clothing without people assuming I was trying to act older than I was.
I couldn’t pay for things I wanted without people making comments like “Aw, she’s so grown up” when I actually was.
After a certain point, I couldn’t find age appropriate clothing in my size or style, especially now. I had to, and have to settle for clothing that is either juvenile, or far too long for me, making me appear even shorter than I actually am.
I can’t find professional style suits or shoes in my size in any store, and have to pay more money to special order items.
I always assumed people could never have intimate feelings for me because they’d be afraid of society assuming they were pedophiles.
I didn’t “fully develop” as a women until just a few years ago, and technically my medical standards, I still haven’t.
It takes me an extra 30+ min to cook, bake, etc because most counters are about my height and thus I have to continually drag a stool back and forth between counters, stoves, ovens, and cupboards.
When looking for housing, I have to make sure there’s enough low-cupboard space in order to put the essential materials at a place I can reach so when I feel like being lazy, I don’t absolutely have to go out of my way to make food.
I have to make sure ovens and microwaves are at “reasonable” levels in order to use them.
I can’t just run to the store to get beer without it being a huge ordeal for everyone involved.
Desks and office chairs never fit me, are never ergonomic enough for me, and constantly give me back and neck pain.
Speaking of neck pain, I always have to look up when I’m talking to people, so I’m always in constant pain.
And I am required to pay into a retirement fund that I will never fucking see because people with disabilities tend to live less. And you want to know why people with disabilities tend to fucking die sooner? Because no body gives a shit enough to make life any easier for anyone other than Average-Sized-Able Bodied people.
I didn’t mean for this to be a list of “woe me,” which I suppose that’s what it could be seen as, sure. What the purpose of this is to educate you and help you become more aware on disability. Visible disabilities like cerebral palsy, autism, people in wheel-chairs, or people with disfigured limbs are not the only disabilities; disabilities can also be having a slight difference that makes living life just that much more struggled, or even completely invisible. It isn't up to you to decide if someone's life is different or difficult enough to have a disability.
