My 3 days of Linux adventures
I figured out how to copy an iso onto a flashdrive to install linux and after realizing I was hitting the wrong BIOS menu button after a few hours of trial and error and a call to my more tech savvy sister
Started linux setup, got steam on there, realized how many of my games were windows only downloads, and proceeded to research for another couple hours how to get wine running and what front end to use because my computer has 3 gb of ram and I didn't trust that it could handle duel running OSs
Figure out there's literally a button for it in steam download options after which I say fuck it pass out and just reinstall linux the next morning hours faster than the first time I did.
Yay! Games installed!!
Download discord. Discord calls sound like I'm talking through a tin can on a landing strip no matter what settings I mess with. Assume it's something to do with the wifi cutting out. Investigate for hours to experiment with wifi power saving and settings and finally throw in the towel to talk to my sister again
My wifi despite showing two bars is actually faster than it's ever been and is downloading at ~100mbs. Give up for the night
Wake up the next morning to figure out what was fucking up, play around with mic settings and levels before finally reading a forum post from two years ago talking about window's auto installed noise cancellation drivers.
Resign myself to either needing to buy an external mic that's not right next to my computer's half broken fan, or needing to download specific noise canceling drives from github
Struggle with figuring out how to run shit from github for an hour
Resign myself to the external mic pt 2, try to boot up my favorite little rpgmaker puzzle game and it runs like a slideshow. This is my limit. I need my little mimic chest puzzle.
Begin researching again. Learn about more drivers I could potentially try installing or the much simpler method of just dual booting (computer has no ram. She's so old you guys)
Finally throw in the towel completely and decide to unfortunately switch back to Windows10. Download the iso accidentally and struggle around with getting it on the usb before getting the rar I need and the program to reformat the usb to take it (thank you ventoy) and struggle to download it while making sense of tutorials
Try to boot it. Fail.
What the fuck is a partition
Finally realized at this point that the prefix 'Sudo' in ubuntu is the command to run from root. That wouldve been nice to know
Finally delete partitions, run windows and get it reinstalled.
Honestly a 10/10 experience had a blast would do again

My Linux Journey
This was originally supposed to be a post on learning Linux but I got to rambling so enjoy my story about my journey with Linux. Expect a post on that topic at a later date.
~The early days~
I think my introduction to Linux was honestly quite smooth. See I'm poor and am not inclined to sail the seven seas when I can get by on a free option. And as I looked for free software I started to pick up that the safe ones were always "open source" and seemed to always support, sometimes primarily, Linux. Eventually my curiosity was piqued and I decided to look into it. I was confused by a lot of things, but I was setting up a Minecraft server for my friends and saw people recommend Linux, specifically Debian, for the job. So after unsuccessfully installing it once (I don't know how I think I got scared about formatting the drive) and not understanding how formatting works and deleting the operating system by writing it over with 0's (I keep adding comments but seriously where did I get the impression I had to do that?) and reinstalling I got it set up, downloaded everything I needed, and got it working in a few days. This taught me a lot. The command line, which I wasn't unfamiliar with but rarely used, was my new best friend, or rather only friend. I learned how to do updates, navigate the file structure, download software, and use Nano because, well, I had to. But most importantly, I like how clean everything was compared to Windows (subtle foreshadowing), and I wanted more.
~Adoption~
I was building my computer and really wanted to make the jump to Linux, so I researched and landed on Kubuntu. I installed it, smoothly this time, got some software, got confused by Snaps, opened Blender and- green bar. I had a new AMD graphics card, so driver issues weren't unexpected, but it deterred me enough to just install Windows instead. I did decide though to try on my laptop since it was older and mostly used for web-surfing. I installed Pop! OS because I thought the tiling was cool (more subtle foreshadowing) and... It worked great! I quickly got used to the nice GUI elements it provided and my prior knowledge of the terminal made it easy enough to fix odd issues that came up. However, and I'm sure everyone who knows anything about Linux sees this one coming
~Distro Hopping~
I'll save you most of the details but I think it went like this
Pop! OS, got mad at Gnome, switched to Manjaro with KDE (Which will be my DE of choice for the rest of this), wanted Arch but wasn't comfortable enough with the command line yet.
Broke something, switched to Debian, liked it on server thought I might like it on my laptop.
Wanted newer software, switched to OpenSuse Tumbleweed.
I used OpenSuse Tumbleweed for I think a year straight. It's just that good, but I can't leave good enough alone so
Alpine Linux, because I thought it was cool. Actually planning on moving back to it once I'm done needing my laptop to always be working because it meets that "clean" criteria like no other in my brain (See I told you it was foreshadowing).
And right now Endeavour OS, because I wanted something with good documentation and didn't feel like setting up Arch.
Oh and I use i3 now, to finish off the foreshadowing.
There were a bunch of short lived ones throughout that, but those are the memorable ones. Also I installed Fedora on the computer I built a few months back and now use it over Windows whenever I can.
~Where I am Now~
If it isn't obvious, I'm sucked in. I've almost built Linux From Scratch, three times, installed Gentoo a few times, and even tried expanding my horizons further with FreeBSD, which I love but the software support isn't great for my needs. Linux is natural to me and I even have my own bits of obscure knowledge on fixes for odd issues with my hardware. I have weird opinions about init systems (Weird because I don't actually care much, I just like OpenRC more than SystemD because it's simple). Windows feels slow to use, and not for hardware reasons it just takes me twice as long to do anything. I really love tiling window managers like I don't understand how I lived without them. I primarily use open source software when I can but flatpaks and web applications fill in the gaps nicely.
~Closing Notes~
I love Linux, probably a bit too much, but it's just a fun time. It works well for me and I've spent enough time in the ecosystem that it's what I'm used to. I see a lot of new Linux users on here so if you're new, welcome! Don't let the often toxic community (at least on Reddit, I don't know about here) get to you. My absolute favorite part of Linux is that you get to have choices. Make use of that, find what you like, and don't be afraid to reinstall Arch for the 10 millionth time. There's a lot to learn, and maybe my story will be of some help. To those more experienced than me, how the fuck do you understand chmod

PSA: Free Software
Reading this may really save your time, privacy, and money! Reblog or share to spread awareness!
Folks often use software that’s expensive and sometimes even inferior because they don’t know there are alternatives. So to those unfamiliar: basically, free and open-source (FOSS) or "libre" software is free to use and anyone can access the original code to make their own version or work on fixing problems.
That does not mean anyone can randomly add a virus and give it to everyone—any respectable libre project has checks in place to make sure changes to the official version are good! Libre software is typically developed by communities who really care about the quality of the software as a goal in itself.
There are libre alternatives to many well-known programs that do everything an average user needs (find out more under the cut!) for free with no DRM, license keys, or subscriptions.
Using libre software when possible is an easy way to fight against and free yourself from corporate greed while actually being more convenient in many cases! If you need an app to do something, perhaps try searching online for things like:
foss [whatever it is]
libre [whatever it is]
open source [whatever it is]
Feel free to recommend more libre software in the tags, replies, comments, or whatever you freaks like to do!
Some Libre Software I Personally Enjoy…
LibreOffice
LibreOffice is an office suite, much like Microsoft Office. It includes equivalents for apps like Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, which can view and edit files created for those apps.
I can't say I've used it much myself yet. I do not personally like using office software except when I have to for school.
OpenShot
OpenShot Video Editor is, as the name suggests, a video editing program. It has industry-standard features like splicing, layering, transitions, and greenscreen.
I've only made one video with it so far, but I'm already very happy with it. I had already paid for a video editor (Cyberlink PowerDirector Pro), but I needed to reinstall it and I didn't remember how. Out of desperation, I searched up "FOSS video editor" and I'm so glad I did. There's no launcher, there's no promotion of other apps and asset packs—it's just a video editor with a normal installer.
GIMP
GNU Image Manipulation Program is an image editor, much like Photoshop. Originally created for Linux but also available for Windows and MacOS, it provides plenty of functionality for editing images. It is a bit unintuitive to learn at first, though.
I've used it to create and modify images for years, including logos, really bad traceover art, and Minecraft textures. It doesn't have certain advanced tech like AI paint-in, but it has served my purposes well and it might just work for yours!
(Be sure to go to Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Colors. I have no idea why that's not enabled by default.)
Audacity
Audacity is an audio editing program. It can record, load, splice, and layer audio files and apply effects to them.
Audacity is another program I've used for a long time. It is not designed to compose music, but it is great for podcasts, simple edits, and loading legacy MS Paint to hear cool noises.
7-Zip
7-Zip is a file manager and archive tool. It supports many archive types including ZIP, RAR, TAR, and its own format, 7Z. It can view and modify the contents of archives, encrypt and decrypt archives, and all that good stuff.
Personally, I use 7-Zip to look inside JAR files for Minecraft reasons. I must admit that its UI is ugly.
Firefox
Firefox is an internet browser, much like Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or Safari. While browsers are free, many of them include tracking or other anti-consumer practices. For example, Google plans to release an update to Chromium (the base that most browsers are built from these days) that makes ad blockers less effective by removing the APIs they currently rely on.
Aside from fighting monopolies, benefits include: support for animated themes (the one in the picture is Purple Night Theme), good ad blockers forever, an (albeit hidden) compact UI option (available on about:config), and a cute fox icon.
uBlock Origin
As far as I know, uBlock Origin is one of the best ad blockers there is.
I was on a sketchy website with my brother, and he was using Opera GX's ad blocker. Much of the time when he clicked on anything, it would take us to a random sponsored page. I suggested that he try uBlock Origin, and with uBlock Origin, that didn't happen anymore.
Linux
Linux is a kernel, but the term is often used to refer to operating systems (much like Windows or MacOS) built on it. There are many different Linux-based operating systems (or "distros") to choose from, but apps made for Linux usually work on most popular distros. You can also use many normally Windows-only apps on Linux through compatibility layers like WINE.
I don't have all four of these, so the images are from Wikipedia. I tried to show a variety of Linux distros made for different kinds of users.
If you want to replace your operating system, I recommend being very careful because you can end up breaking things. Many computer manufacturers don't care about supporting Linux, meaning that things may not work (Nvidia graphic cards notoriously have issues on Linux, for example).
Personally, I tried installing Pop!_OS on a laptop, and the sound output mysteriously doesn't work. I may try switching to Arch Linux, since it is extremely customizable and I might be able to experiment until I find a configuration where the audio works.
Many Linux distros offer "Live USB" functionality, which works as both a demo and an installer. You should thoroughly test your distro on a Live USB session before you actually install it to be absolutely sure that everything works. Even if it seems fine, you should probably look into dual-booting with your existing operating system, just in case you need it for some reason.
Happy computering!

CW: Unhealthy Coping Mechanisms
—/—/—/—/—/—
At that moment, I was in the developer’s… [Father’s] bedroom.
In spite of the repeated life-sustainment treatment he received, his body had become weak and thus had to spend most of his time asleep.
During times when he would be strong enough to keep his eyes open, Father taught me how to perform my own self-maintenance as well as his own techniques.
It was a wonder how different the world my Father had taught me was from the data I’ve gathered inside my head, that it was much more vivid and colorful than what I had known from within the confines of our home.
Thinking about it now, this may have been my “emotions” functioning in its own way.
The afterglow of the sun shines through the window, and with my back against the light, I continued to sing just as Father had asked me to.
—To sing the Yokohama City Song just as the Original did.
Father, who usually had a mournful expression on his face, softened his eyes at that point.
“...What do you want to do in the future?” He asked me when the song ended.
“...…I am registered to answer with ‘Singer’, Master.”
After answering that question, Father’s face instantly turned dark.
“That tone of voice is wrong. I should have registered it differently.”
“......I want to be a singer, Dad.”
“Even now, do you still want to be a singer?” “Unable to understand. The volume zone is registered up to the Original’s mid-teenage years.”
As soon as I told him, Father frowned and remained silent.
I thought that I had made a mistake, but I could not repeat what I said once more.
In truth, there was not enough data to properly determine whether the Original truly wanted to become a singer or not.
Father let a sigh escape him and smiled bitterly.
“......I’m sorry, it’s not your fault. I simply lacked skill.”
“Master does not lack in anything.”
“Haha… It’s pathetic to hear that coming from you, who looks exactly just like my son.”
Should I refrain from speaking any further? Thus, I held my tongue.
Master appeared to be in pain, after all.
“In the past, I used to be an AI emotion engineer, but androids weren’t originally something that can be created by a single person. It’s meant to be systematically produced and managed by a team of people. Because I worked on you all by myself… You ended up being a complicated structure and leaving a lot of waste.
Even rebuilding the program from the core would be an impossible task.”
Master’s eyes looked as if he were regretting what he’d done in the past.
His fist shook slightly on top of the bed he laid on.
I knew that his hands were wrinkled, yet soft and warm.
“Wouldn’t it have been better if Master were to uninstall this current program and reinstall the current latest AI program available on the market?”
When I had suggested this, Father scowled.
“I cannot do that.” “Why so?”
“If I did that, it wouldn’t be ‘you’ anymore.”
“I see…”
I didn’t understand why at all. My body is simply a box.
However, the ‘brain’ within that box can be replaced at any time.
If I were to, I could reassemble the new data into my replaced brain, then I might have been able to become the ‘me’ Father had longed for.
Father took a deep breath and spoke in a soft whisper.
“......I suppose you still lack those 21 grams, after all.”
21 grams.
The weight of a soul.
It’s what my Father wanted for me.
A “heart”, just like human beings.
“How should I be able to obtain those 21 grams?”
This was a question I had asked multiple times before.
Father glanced at my face then lowered his eyes.
“Within you, there was a bug I haven’t fixed yet.
If we left it out as is, a fatal error might occur…
But to me, I’d like to keep it that way.”
“...Why so?”
A bug. An error.
These words have always been much closer to me than my own heart.
It was perplexing to leave such a thing unfixed.
“......Perhaps I may just be waiting around for that error to occur.”
His tone of voice made it seem as if he were talking to himself.
Why does Father want an error to happen? I don’t know.
There’s not enough information to make a proper hypothesis.
[———Still, if that’s what the developer wants, then it should be fine.]
That’s what I had thought at the time.
……What do I think about this now?
Inside that bedroom under the evening glow,
I stood there, awaiting for Father to speak once more, looking dejected. We did not raise our voices to speak, and in the end, we did not talk to each other any further than that.
Kinari and Father, they were a bit similar.
“At the very least, you could say what’s on your mind in your own words.”
Father murmured to himself.
—/—/—/—/—/—
Translation Notes:
1 - 21 grams is an experiment, particularly on the weight of a human soul. This wiki link should do the trick of what it was. Warning for animal cruelty though.

Kinda announcement, more like a rant. Propably will change my mind eventually and delete this post.
I think I might be finally done with the Sims and it's continuos problems. I have no time (though I have nothing but time), energy or mental capacity to fix things anymore, and I can't afford to use the computer. I'm currently on a long sick leave with zero income until my maternity leave. I was just diagnosed with pregnancy diabetes, I can hardly move and have gained almost 20kg (I used to be under 50kg, so that's a lot!). And there's still three months to due date 😱 To top that, they do medical examinations in case I have some sort of epilepsy, and Topi the dog has just gotten two seizures, wich means he likely has Canine Epileptoid Cramping Syndrome like his two uncles.
I just don't know how to fix the game anymore, I have lost all basic skills being away from the computer for one and a half year. I uninstalled and reinstalled the games because the effing EA App wouldn't open nor let me play, and I was sick of EIG not working. But now the game won't start (my only hint is the code 0x0175dcbb), and for some reason I'm missing my Seasons disk, like I haven't cherished them for a decade! So I'm done for now.
I would still like to lurk around here, cause I enjoy watching your posts, but atm it feels like rubbing salt in my wounds. And I have plenty of them in my finger tips right now, testing sugar levels six times a day from someone who practically has no bloodflow in the extremes results in plenty of unnecessary stings. Anyway, with this kinda mental and physical health I ought to stay away from the computer and try to exercice 🙈 Better leave this with a joke, don't know what else to say. But have a nice Spring 💗 The next night should be the last below zero in here, and I have dozens of tulips planted in the front yard waiting for the ground to melt 😁
Edit: So I broke my Steam games too while at it, so I had no reason to use the whole PC again. Currently reinstalling Windows. I hope I backed up everything... A friend of mine found her copy of Seasons... 😏
Edit: An unexpected error occured. Windows can not be installed.
Edit: At least the computer is working

After having taken my PC apart and installing Windows for a THIRD TIME SINCE I’VE HAD IT, I ran multiple memory diagnostics because I had a feeling, a suspicion.
I ran a diagnostic one stick of RAM at a time, and I went through all that to figure exactly which two were failing. Because I’ve been convinced that the reason why my computer had been acting up for the past year had to have been some kind of memory issue.
But I lollygagged, because the problem didn’t seem so bad. Crashes every so often. Sure I had to reinstall windows once which involved a lot of hard drive finagling but ultimately, things worked again. Until it didn’t. And it again reached the point where windows just would not boot.
But I think I’ve done it for real this time. I found the two sticks of RAM that had gone bad and hopefully I will never have to deal with this issue for a while.
But now I have to reinstall everything. And put all my files back in the configurations I had before.
I’m so tired.

do u have any advice for switching to linux? im admittedly intimidated but so tired of windows ads.. and i've had to reinstall windows 3 times this year because updates have just. broke. so i'm done w all that.
takes your hand. the first step is getting so fed up with microsoft's bull shit that you start thinking to yourself "fuck, maybe I DO want to see what linux is about actually". and you are already there.
I typed a lot again but let me boil it down real quick so you know what you're getting into:
A "linux distribution" is an operating system, basically
Most of the common ones are easy to use now, tho ymmv with the Software You Need and what you use computers for
Start with a virtual machine; troubleshoot until delighted; install
Back your files up regularly so you can un-fuck-up if needed (<- general life advice, but very helpful here for peace of mind)
Windows : IKEA :: Linux : wood + hardware + tools. kinda.
here are 3 other things:
I'm not an expert I'm a very lost new user with a chainsaw and a can-do attitude
Experts don't generally keep the "new user" feeling close to their heart so what the fuck do they know about anything anyway
I don't know what you know so, like, bear with me.
...but also if you have more specific questions I'm around and hate my day job so feel extremely free to jump back into my inbox and be like "hey what the fuck is up with ___". or not. I typed so much.
anyway here's some stuff that would've helped me :3
ime, the most Intimidating thing about going from "god I hate the accursed Window" to "linux desktop user" is wrapping your head around what distros are. I overcame this hurdle by recklessly abusing duckduckgo and youtube, but you don't have to.
think of a "linux distribution" as an "operating system". there are one morbillion of them, but if you pick one out of the Big Fucking Pile you can download it, and it will be one (1) file that you can put on a USB drive, and then you can plug that USB drive into your Windows Machine and make the file install itself, and then the machine will have a new operating system. and if you don't like that one you can pick out a different one. off the pile. simple.
now that I have established this: you will have to Choose A Distribution. I have advice on this topic.
it is way easier to make the INSTALLING LINUX ON YOUR WHOLE COMPUTER jump if you use it in a virtual machine first. probably what this will teach you is that it mostly works like you expect a computer to work, but if you encounter any Problems, you can deal with them in your own time because your existing operating system is still right there. this tutorial will get you there. do not use ubuntu, though; use MX Linux. it is better. instead of "download an ubuntu image," go here and download one of these two mx linux images:
standard one (red) if your computer is old, or
"ahs" (blue) if your computer is not very old.
use your judgment. then proceed according to the tutorial, basically.
I am giving you direct instructions instead of general advice because linux is a vast landscape of choice paralysis, which is also one of the things that has tripped me up before. once you have Used Some Linux, you'll start to Learn which things you want to have be different, and once you have some Preferences you can start tailoring your whole situation. unlike the accursed Window, where you can think "I kind of hate windows explorer" and then spend all afternoon on reddit learning that other file explorers for windows TECHNICALLY EXIST but none of them do the stuff you want. anyway.
once you have a working VM of mx linux, here's some stuff to think about or do:
+ what's your impression of the desktop immediately after installing? click stuff and see if you hate anything or can't figure out how to do something simple you can just Do on windows. then go into the settings and see if you can change something you hate, or open firefox and look up how to do the thing you can't do. rinse repeat.
+ tbh maybe this is me being a little freak but I spent like hours collectively in the settings just messing around. there's a new thing in MX tools where you can change the colors of your folder icons to literally whatever color you want; click that. enjoy the unadulterated aesthetic power.
+ log into your mozilla account on firefox. if you don't have a mozilla account, make one and then log into it. if you're on chrome, import all your chrome shit into firefox and attach it to a mozilla account and then log into it on your regular OS and in the VM. now you can blog from linux.
+ (you can also install chrome if you want (I have it in case a website belligerently doesn't want to work on firefox + have had to use it for, like, bills or whatever once in a blue moon). or any other browser. set up your preferred stuff everywhere!! go download a desktop wallpaper!! download these images and put them on there. home sweet home.)
+ you will encounter inconveniences as you try to use the VM for your Everyday Computing Experience, mostly because all your shit is already set up and stored on your windows computer and you're gonna be like "fuck I need [file]" and it's kind of a pain in the ass to directly get files from a host onto a VM and cloud storage sucks and none of your stuff is where you expect it to be on the desktop etc etc etc. deal with this as it comes. idk, write stuff down. solve 1 problem at a time when you have spare time. your goal at this point should be "I can use the VM instead of my actual computer for everyday tasks". but you can get there slow.
+ if you run into something that you USE on windows and CAN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO USE OR REPLACE on linux, now you are asking the big questions. go down a research rabbithole about it.
here is where I start saying generalizations again:
linux will teach you to Find Solutions For Stuff. the difference btwn windows and desktop linux is that windows will be like "here's how it is. don't worry about it" and you can either go "okay <3 yay <3" or you can get pissed off and go see what linux is about. and linux will be like "well here's like the entire breadth of human UX proclivities and a lot of power tools; I'll be on the forums if you need me; good luck, champ" AND THAT'S AWESOME. p.s. keep the forums for your distro close at hand when troubleshooting. they do good work in there.
uh basically my advice is: step up to it. do not stop trying stuff. become a gun that's full of bullets that are questions, and eventually you WILL be A Linux User. also, write down any command line stuff you learn in like a notebook or whatever so you can remember it without looking it up again next time you need it.
here's one: "./filename.whatever" runs the file. this is useful for when you download something that's not in your distro's package manager and have to run it like it's an exe or something and there's just a .sh file in there and you don't know what that means. it means "right click the folder -> 'open terminal here' -> type './filename.sh' -> program is now running". here's another one: "~/" stands for your home folder. which is where all your stuff lives. on mx linux I can hit f4 to bring up the dropdown terminal, type "featherpad ~/Documents/linuxes\ advice.txt" and it'll open this document in the default text editor. the \ is an escape character so it knows you mean the space is part of the filename. now you're 1337 :)
finally: if and when you reach a point where you can do all your normal computer stuff on your virtual machine, back up ur files off your windows machine and do one of the following:
take a new image of your working copy of mx linux (mx tools can help you do this) and install that on The Real Machine
get a clean .iso of mx linux and install it and re-set it up from scratch. pg 17 of the user manual, "2.2.3 Create LiveMedium", will tell you how to set up the USB drive, btw.
pick a different distribution and install that.
if you are 100% happy with mx, fuck yeah keep it. if you want something shinier, may I suggest Garuda? I fucking love Garuda Linux with my life.
SECTION FOR IF YOU PLAY GAMES ON YOUR COMPUTER BECAUSE THERE'S A LOT TO SAY ABOUT THIS:
if you play games, during your "what do I do with this VM" phase, go get them + try to run them. if you play games via steam, the store page for a game will have a "system requirements" field for linux if the game runs natively on linux. it usually says "ubuntu" but that doesn't actually mean you have to be running ubuntu; try it anyway. if the game does not run natively on linux, you can go into the game's settings and go to compatibility and "force the use of a compatibility tool" and a lot of the time that will just work ("proton experimental" is fine, or whatever the newest one is). if you have trouble, go protondb you and see what people have said about running the game. IF A GAME HAS MULTIPLAYER MAYBE GO TO PROTONDB FIRST and check to see whether anyone says anything about anticheat; this is the only thing that can have actual permanent consequences (sometimes anticheats will trigger if you try to use workarounds that let you run a game on linux). you can also look up a specific game on the r/linux_gaming subreddit; they are very helpful sometimes.
I'm officially out of arguably relevant sentences now, but I hope this helps some. Linux is fun + I like it a lot; you should try it !!!
#linuxes#essentially in my experience if you simply decide to be a mad scientist about this you will have fun and succeed. I would recommend this.

🍙 for @satorisoup from my fruits basket :3
Long Post. but i (Rlly) summarized the questions for viewing ease 🫡
1) life & school
i Am nervous about school hbdfhbg i’m a sociology major!! ^^ love soc but i switched to honours so i have to keep my gpa up, and most of my classes this year are really reading/writing/presentation heavy.. plus i'm trying a full course load for the first time so doing my thesis next yr will be easier, but i'm already easily stressed and burnt out.. lol.. ;; it's probably fine though
life’s getting busy.. and i’m not sure my cosplay will get here in time for my con but it’s ok tbh! the good outweighs the bad for those things. i wish i had money for the con outside my grants/loans but LOL that's life
2) celebrating my birthday with keiji :3
tmi maybe. i haven’t had a great birthday since i was 15/16 to be honest FBHBDJ i'm so burnt out and depressed in dec that the past few years i haven’t done anything at all LOL but hearing this,, keiji makes it his mission to give me a good one ^^ !
he takes the day off and makes sure the day is just for us! practices making heart shaped pancakes and cooks breakfast.. i walk in on him in the kitchen super focused and accidentally scare him LOL he wanted it to be a surprise but it’s ok!! i watch and talk while i wait
it’s usually cold so i don't go anywhere ;; but we still have fun!! it’s nothing crazy,, we just talk, put on a show while we work on a puzzle or bake… play some co-op games.. order dinner.. yeagh
if it isn’t awful outside, we might make a little snowman or snow angels at the park nearby :]
he gets birthday gifts separate from his christmas ones.. since they're so close my birthday’s kinda overshadowed & i tell people to get one gift or none but keiji refuses!! he writes a long heartfelt letter, commissions art of us & our cat, and buys custom matching necklaces + little crochet accessories + ribbon 🙂↕️ (also macarons. i rock w macarons.)
3) favourite aki scene :3

Guess who just remembered that best girl GUM exists?!
(boring sort-of related story below)
Holy hell this one. I don't usually get into this kind of personal stuff online, but I originally posted this picture yesterday, but took it down because I really didn't like it. Chalk it up to insecurities and PTSD of people actually harassing me over my bad art in the past (which itself is worth an entire post on its own). Since yesterday, I've made a lot of minor adjustments and I'm much happier with how this looks now.
You'd think these fixes would be easy -- and you'd be right, except that my computer completely screwed up last night. As a result, I had to make the last updates to Gum on my MacBook.
Lesson to Linux users: DON'T OPEN KRITA DURING AN UPDATE. This choice may have singlehandedly wasted my weekend, as I'm currently in the process of backing EVERYTHING up to my external HDD so that I can upgrade to the newest Manjaro and fix my GRUB, because even the GRUB settings aren't working anymore. I don't know for sure how I'm going to fix this other than reinstalling, but I'm just glad to be savvy enough to get all my files back before something else could happen. Best-case scenario now is I'll have to reinstall Manjaro and also reinstall GRUB, after which GRUB will be able to determine which disks on my system are bootable.
So when it comes to kernel-related updates, you should do what Windows XP users did when installing anything: turn off all other programs until the update is done. I could blame the fact that my PC is 7 years old (custom built, received several upgrades since), but the only way I can justify this entire conundrum is by saying that I was on Linux kernel 5.15 when the newest is version 6.2 or something. But that's less of a justification and more of a cope.

Friendly advice for those with computers or potentially getting a computer: SSDs are worth it.
A SSD is a solid state drive. It serves the same purpose as at HDD or hard disk drive that is found on most computers. The only real difference on a surface level is that a hard drive uses a disk and an SSD doesn't not. The only part you should care about is that a SSD runs a lot faster than a HDD. This means that a computer with a SSD as the primary storage (or the C: drive in many cases) will allow the PC to startup and shut down much faster, access/manage files faster, and last much much longer than a HDD.
If you ever turned a computer and can't do anything because the "Disk" in task manager is at 100%, it's because of the HDD.
You can have both an HDD and an SSD, but Windows (the OS or operating system) will run better on the SSD. The computer will turn on faster. It will shut down faster.
How do I know this? I've seen it twice (technically three times). I put an SSD on my old laptop from around 2015 and reinstalled windows it. The startup and shutdown process mimics a new laptop (the SSD was NOT brand new). This was a laptop that died on me right before my college exams, so it's not my primary PC anymore.
The other more compelling example is I did the same thing to my parents' old 2017(? maybe older) office computer. My parents have complained for years about it running slow. The new SSD I put on it is the first solution that actually brought new life into it.
By the way, you might think a new hard drive would have a similar effect of the new SSD, but a new hard drive is slower than a new or old SSD. It was something I experienced in my current PC while trying to switch to an SSD with larger storage. Windows had always been on my SSD and as soon as I put that OS on the hard drive, it was significantly slower.
A SSD will allow your computer to run well for so much longer. I cannot figure out why the worthwhile investment in a SSD is understated, and I won't shut up about it. Sorry if this was hard to follow. When I'm done with college I'm making an informative comic/info graphic for this.
#sorry this came out of no where#I'm very passionate about this because I had to find the actual benefits of an SSD by accident#I'm sure the information is out there but I'm shocked it's not a widely known thing yet to the average consumer#SSD#HDD#solid state drive#hard disk drive#computer#computers#tech advice

Sims 2 installation in 2023
So. I just had to reinstall Sims2... again. About every 18 months I will get careless with my CC, muck with the TSData etc with no backup and lose everything. You'd think I'd learn, but apparently the lure of playing the first 24 hours of the Brokes in a clean Pleasantview makes me subconsciously self-sabotage. So, I thought why not use this opportunity to lay everything out (with links) so that I have myself a handy-dandy guide to All The Fixes. Because currently I use about sixteen different walkthroughs for different things.
Step 1: Install the game (*cough* Mr DJ's version as EAxis have abandoned us *cough*) link here: https://oldgamesdownload.com/the-sims-2-ultimate-collection/
EDIT: Having attempted this... I think the link is now broken. But the link from the Wayback Archive version of this link from 2020 definitely still works!
Step 2: Fix the broken Mr DJ Ikea Stuff Pack. Tutorial video, with link in the description: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWU3__aECuE
Step 3: Attempt 4GB fix (never works - mine seems stuck at 1024MB, advice please?). Tutorial and link here: https://pleasantsims.com/sims-2-windows-10/
Step 4: Fix Graphics/Screen Resolution. Tutorial and link here: https://www.simsnetwork.com/tools/graphics-rules-maker
Step 5: Set up Downloads folder in Documents/EA Games/Sims 2. Set up "Mods" folder inside Downloads.
Step 6: Download the following support programs and install: The Compressorizer, Sims2Pack CleanInstaller, Hood Checker, SimPE. Links here: https://archive.org/details/ts2thecompressorizer, https://modthesims.info/d/409950/sims2pack-clean-installer-v1-6-22-updated-aug-2-2014.html, https://modthesims.info/download.php?t=456523, https://modthesims.info/d/30839/simpe-latest-version-0-75f.html.
Step 7: Download clean Neighbourhood templates and replace defaults. Link and tutorial here: https://meetme2theriver.livejournal.com/63030.html.
Step 8: Download CEP, link here: https://archive.org/details/ts2cepcolorenablepackage, tutorial for manual install here (if needed): https://forums.thesims.com/en_US/discussion/897603/cep-installation-help
Step 9: Download "Essential Mods"... and at this point I realise this step is it's own megapost. Coming soon if anyone wants yet another essential mods list...
Step 9a: Play one token day of Sims2 unmodded, before remembering why you have played modded for the last 15 years. Fuss with the Graphics a lot. Muck with all the resolutions, before sighing and turning it to 800x600 because you like the classic UI, but want it big. (If there's a way to fix this... please share! I genuinely like how the dark blue original UI blends into the visual background more than the cleanUI, no matter how good a mod that is. 800x600 UI size at 1900x1600 resolution is my dream!)
Step 10: Commence binge-downloading CC, forgetting (as always) to keep it neat and subfoldered. Some things are essential (thanks be to Numenor, HugeLunatic and Honeywell for Build Mode especially) other things vary each time depending on how I want this particular installation to look/play. Get on Tumblr. Get on MTS2. Get on Pinterest. Get on TSR and wait 1 min per download as a last resort. Fill yer boots!
Step 11: Play!

Okay, so this just feels not very fair. I was finishing up my N7 Day Andromeda vid and just needed to capture a couple more scenes. But even though the recording seemed to start as usual, there was just nothing there when it was done. Then I realized that the Game Bar itself wouldn't actually even load. None of the fixes for that have, you know, fixed it. (The Game Bar was working as of Nov 2 because that's the last day I have any captures recorded.)
Digging around, I discovered that my computer is throwing errors left and right but just managing to correct from them and not crashing. Rather, not crashing yet. Clearly something is STILL wrong, despite having acted normal in the month since it was Blue Screening like mad before I reinstalled Windows.
But. Here's the kicker. My dad's computer started Blue Screening right after I got mine working again. The difference, though, is that it's very difficult to get his to restart. If I can get it to come on once more, I'm going to try to completely reinstall its Windows but I don't honestly know if it's going to be able to or not. This thing is pretty fried and, of course, is *just* past its warranty. 😣
I was already assuming we're going to have to replace his computer but now mine, which is much older, is starting to circle the ol' drain. He told me tonight to focus on replacing mine and not to worry about his. He's been able to pretty much do the stuff he likes to do on the computer via our tv's Fire Stick so he said he's not missing out on anything. But still. I'll feel awful if he gets bumped back because of me since he's already not had a reliable computer for the past 3 weeks.
That said, in my 20 some years of having computers, I've never before had BOTH of them in danger of being bricked at the same time. This just sucks so much! I just want to be able to make my silly little videos and to try to get my WIPs done with NaNo. I was actually doing pretty good juggling both up until now.
Ah well. I'm just venting, sorry. I may be gone again, depending on how things go. However, I did schedule my Andromeda video to post on Youtube on November 7 whether I'm able to get here or not. Will post it here and on my AO3 when I can. Even though it's not completely the vision I had for it, I still like how it turned out. Surprisingly, it's not a shipper vid this time. And probably nobody thought I could MAKE a character study that didn't have even a hint of shippiness, right? 🤷♀️😉
*sigh* I'm trying not to let this get me down but dang if I'm not just tired of pretending I have any idea how to fix all of these issues. I can't find any place decent to take them for repairs that doesn't want a ton of money just to reinstall Windows and since I can do that, I don't want to pay somebody else for something I can do for free, you know? But I'm getting to the point where I think they've either got some sort of hardware issues that just reinstalling can't fix or I'm just borking up the reinstall somehow. I don't know. I'm so, so, so tired of it.
Love you, friends. Hope you're doing well and that I'll see you again soon. 💖

Ah yes now that my Inquisitor Valentines are out I can tell you what a STRUGGLE they were to finish, mostly because my tablet, which is of course infamously wonky, was in its last dying throes.
Like I've had it since ~2017, and used it consistently for about 3 of those 6 years, so I feel pretty strongly it shouldn't be in this bad of shape. It started with some strange quirk of the USB C connection, where every time you turned the tablet back on or woke it up from sleep, you'd have to change which port it was connected to in the computer otherwise it would read "no signal". Okay, weird, but I could live with that, even if I had to try like 6 combinations of ports between the tablet and laptop to find one that worked each time.
It would sometimes register phantom touches that weren't there and randomly hit a different tool or window or leave a stray dot on my work and I'd have to go back and fix it. Again, quirky, but liveable.
Then lately it's been just abruptly not registering pen touches in the middle of a drawing, and no amount of unplugging, re-starting, etc., would get it to register again. Even though the cursor would move when you hovered the pen over it, Wacom's software couldn't detect that a tablet was connected to the computer. The only fix was to completely uninstall and reinstall the driver. Every time. Which was annoying, but I lived with it when it affected me every 3-4 drawing sessions.
By the time I got to my lineart/coloring of Trilla on Sunday, this problem was occuring once every 5-30 minutes. I had a 2.5 hour drawing session where I had to reinstall my driver TWELVE times. I couldn't even finish putting flat colors on her face before it would crap out again! Luckily for Inky it only happened twice during the session, but by then I had HAD ENOUGH.
Again, I reiterate that I bought my Wacom Cintiq Pro 13 ~6 years ago. It was an incredibly expensive tablet then. They don't even make them anymore, now the smallest Cintiq Pro available is a 16". And since I JUST had to buy a new car after my last one broke down, I definitely did not have $650 to spend on a tablet. Besides, my faith in Wacom is shaken now. Even though my first tablet ever was a Wacom Bamboo back in the early 2010's, and I've also had an Intuos. This was one failure too far.
So my lovely husband has ordered for me a Huion Kamvas 13. The technical specifications look really good, and the price was even better. Really excited about the display and color range, since that was my biggest complaint with my Cintiq. Anything in the range of yellow/pink/orange/brown had a really green tone to it on my display, and it made it difficult to percieve the colors well, especially when trying to make realistic skin tones. I am looking forward to trying it out!
Hopefully this means faster, better artwork for you! And less frustration for me! So cheers, this has been an impromptu tablet review brought to you by inquisitorius-sin-bin.

As a Linux user, just saying "switch to Linux" is bonkers for most folks. Not because Linux is super difficult or cumbersome, but because enshittification of tech has deprecated and depreciated what it means to be a basic user. I had a conversation with a college student who was complaining about having to replace their phone every 3-5 years or so because their phone wouldn't be able to update to the latest version of their OS. When I said "you could just flash an alternative or aftermarket OS on it", they looked at me as though I was describing the various individual parts of the Hadron Collider. It wasn't because they lacked intellect, rather due to lack of knowledge and information. This person grew up with tablets and chromebooks with no right-click enabled, everything stored in 'the cloud' and a user interface almost entirely locked down. It's 'safe' and 'convenient' for underfunded IT departments, sure, but it also has a major drawback in that it asphyxiates curiosity and discovery. The computer, turned into a magic box of mystery that you're forbidden from opening up and exploring its guts. Comparing that to my early days messing with Novell login screens (anyone else remember sending messages to every other computer through that one feature?) and running games off of floppies we'd bring to school, and it's just disheartening. We got so many opportunities to enthusiastically learn and grow through what is today considered highly questionable and problematic activities; things we did that encouraged more learning, more discovering, more studying. Finding out about Linux in college was a revelation - I finally had the option to move beyond Windows and Apple; sure, I could fuck up my system - but that was MY choice, MY responsibility, and MY consequences. No one was grabbing my hand and forcing me into one specific path - I was free to blaze my own trail. Sometimes this resulted in having to do a full reinstall, or hunt down dependencies for some obscure program I read about in a forum. But that control made a substantial difference in how I viewed computers and mobile devices. Many folks don't switch to Linux because the tech industry has deliberately created (and continues to create) restrictive paths and controls, making users become entirely dependent on specific apps for increasingly basic tasks (e.g., listening to music, watching videos, creating documents/spreadsheets/presentations, communicating with other folks online, etc). It seems like every fucking company and their subsidiary has an app, often little more than window dressing augmenting their website. It's just really unfortunate that a lot of younger folks are kept in the dark as to what they can really do with computers; there is this somber feeling of being at the mercy of large tech corporations from many of them. As older folks we should be doing more to light the way towards systems that respect their privacy, their autonomy, their freedom; to encourage exploration and support of independent developers creating wonderful software (CherryTree, for example); and to support diverging from the mainstream. Younger folks aren't stupid, they've just grown up in an era where they're trapped in devices with planned obsolescence, arrested development, restricted and highly controlled user interfaces, and bellicose corporations with their finger hovering over the lawsuit button.
Telling young zoomers to "just switch to linux" is nuts some of these ipad kids have never even heard of a cmd.exe or BIOS you're throwing them to the wolves

Win11 is so stupid. It has even less patience than me.
I'm installing DaVinci Resolve which is quite a heavy software, so also the installation file is a big one and takes some time. Win11 just prompted me repeatedly that the installer is not responding, asking whether I wanna retry or cancel it. It had never actually frozen. It was just taking its time and Windows went "WAIT THIS SOFTWARE IS NOT WORKING."
Dude it is you that is not working. Now let the other softwares install themselves in peace.
I'm also having constant problems with video games. I bought and built a freaking GAMING COMPUTER but I cannot even play anything. I built this game because Euro Truck Simulator 2 stopped working. I have been playing it today, but only a little, because it kept crashing over and over again no matter what I do, and Windows kept constantly restarting Steam. Or I clicked something in the game and then Win11 jammed the system because it thought I also clicked stuff like settings or Discord or whatever. I have been troubleshooting the whole evening and cannot find what's the damn problem with this thing now. At least the game runs, but still somehow worse than it did on Win7 when it still worked a year ago. Sure could be that my GPU is just too old for the game's newest patches, I don't really know.
The second game won't even start. I get to the menu and settings and whatnot, then try to start the game and it crashed after the loading screen. Only stuff I found was people saying it's crashing, devs asking more info, and never getting responses. Apparently according to the error files it's something to do with UnityPlayer.dll, but the instructions I found for that did not work, and I don't know what else to do. Other than trying to lower the settings a bit since devs said in some thread that having too high graphics settings could cause this error (and while my GPU is from the old PC, it's also an older GPU but which supports and should run all of my games well or even perfectly, it anyway meets the minimum specs for each game which is why I did not buy a new one just yet).
On a positive note, I actually did find out why my PC was so fucking laggy and slow yesterday - the CPU comes with an integrated GPU and there was not setting for using the other GPU as the primary GPU, so it was constantly just using the integrated graphics for everything, even video games. I had to go to BIOS and disable the integrated graphics from there, so now this computer actually works how it's supposed to work. Apart from the gaming issues which sometimes jam the whole computer and I have to force turn-off the PC because it won't shut down some windows such as the window for ETS2 and also did not let me click on anything at all.
After this, tho, there's some problems with the AMD Software as it keeps saying I need to install the driver but it's up to date, yet it won't start the software because it keeps saying it needs to be updated. Let's see if that changes once I restart the computer - or then I just have to uninstall the software and reinstall it. I thought I was reinstalling it today but apparently it just decided to fix itself instead but instead of fixing, the problem remained. Also for some reason it's constantly using Dx11 even when the package says that it also supports Dx12, so that's also something I need to figure out how to fix.
I really hope that I get Steam and the games work asap because I literally built this PC because Steam kept saying it doesn't support Win7 anymore, and games stopped working too, and now I have a high-end gaming computer but I can't even play games because Windows keeps fucking up Steam every single time I start a video game. I'll test other games soon too to see if it's a problem in the games or in the system.

Just a shitpost, I’ve made not much during these weeks.
That’s me ‘cause my pc stopped connecting to the internet for a few days and troubleshooting the issue made me feel like on this meme.
Also I started hating porn even more because I’m forced to watch the dumbest and nastiest shit that had ever existed just to make the goofy scene instead of something horrifying. Like, girl, why the hell do you squirt so much from the guy that looks like the mix of horse and monkey that got aborted and then fermented for a 40 years in dew-dew and viagra (I’m sorry XD) I hate NTR, not because it’s cheating, but because this genre is so down bad by writing and character development 💀
As for WIPs, I’ll post some after I finish with that goofy scene as then I’d be busy working with routes I’ve already drafted, adding more stuff and polishing the drafted one
Update 19.12: I was recently reinstalling Windows, so now I lost the access to itch.io, meaning that even if my game was ready, I wouldn’t be able to post it 🥲
Nevermind, my itch.io account is fine already
